Brian Lee Bausch

Brian was born Jan. 30, 1974 to Richard and Helen Bausch in Kansas, where he and his 4 siblings, Karin, Eddie, Carol and Jenny, were raised on the family farm near Hoyt. When he was 7 he received his first horse, Hobbie, who he trained to do many things and marking the start of his horse career. Brian attended Royal Valley Schools and later attended Kansas State University. He enjoyed playing music, both the saxophone and guitar. He was baptized, and confirmed at St. Francis Xavier Church in Mayetta at his family’s church where he grew in his faith. Brian took part in Bible studies, and other church activities. One of which was joining ARC, a Christian group of young people that did inspirational concerts at school assemblies and youth groups. At age 19 Brian let the Lord’s calling, drive him to be devoted to helping others follow Jesus in every area of his life. From 1994 to 1998 he worked at the Double JJ Ranch in Rothbury, Michigan, working his way to head wrangler and also where his entertainment career began. While there he attended horseshoeing school. Following the Double JJ, Brian grew his training, instruction and horseshoeing business at Sugar Tree Farms in Muskegon, Michigan where he developed relationships that lasted him his entire life. Brian met Paula in 2003 at a mounted shooting competition and the two were married August 13th 2005.They trained horses in Cave Creek, AZ, gave lessons and competed together. Their first child, Abram Bausch, was born July 26th, 2009, Hannah L. Bausch was born August 23rd, 2011. In 2012 the family moved to the Orme Boarding School to teach horsemanship for three years. Brian and

his family moved to Queen Creek, AZ in 2015, purchasing their first home, the place they would spend the next 7 years making unforgettable memories. Including celebrating the birth of their third child, Elizabeth A. Bausch on October 4th 2017. During this time Brian stayed closer to home, spending more time with his family. The Beyond Riding business blossomed reaching so many people in the community. Mentoring others in his circle of influence through bible studies and group gatherings and being available for others, was a huge priority in his life. Brian was an accomplished horseman in many different disciplines, but his true love was performing for an audience. He was an accomplished trick rider, trick roper, gun spinner, and trick horse extraordinaire. He could dazzle a crowd with his charisma, charm, jokes and athleticism. It gave him a platform to share his talents with the world along with his glory to God for his abilities. Brian will be most remembered for his smile, fun loving spontaneous attitude, hard working ethic, amazing talent on a horse, and most of all his love and devotion for his family as well as his undeniable love for his Savior Jesus Christ. Brian’s Memorial Service will be held July 15th at 10:00 am, at Sun Valley Community Church. 20271 E Rittenhouse Rd, Queen Creek, AZ 85142 Flowers may be sent to the above address the day of service. SAG Ensemble Nominee

Cole Hauser on Becoming Rip Wheeler

By David Phillips / Awards Daily

Veteran actor Cole Hauser experienced a breakthrough way back in 1997 as one of Matt Damon’s closest friends in Good Will Hunting, but it took nearly two decades for him to land this definitive (for now anyway) role of ‘Rip’ on Yellowstone. In our conversation, we talk about his physical transformation to embody the character, his friendship with Kevin Costner, and how his life has changed as Yellowstone has become a ratings and cultural phenomenon. Q - In 1997 I went to a movie called Good

Will Hunting on a first date, and I was like “Who is this Cole Hauser guy who’s stealing all these scenes?” A - Nooo, really? I was passed out for most of it. [Laughs] Q - Sorry for dating us both at this point. [Laughs] I remember thinking to myself as I was reading about Yellowstone before it came out “Oh wow this is a Kevin Costner show, and I’m a big Taylor Sheridan fan based on Hell Or High Water and other projects, Cole Hauser’s in this too. Great.” I watched the pilot and at the end I said, “Where was Cole Hauser in all of this?” I’m embarrassed to say I did not recognize you. You went through a physical transformation to play this part. A - Yeah, obviously. John Linson who is the creator and Taylor, we were in a meeting when I got to Utah. I already had a beard and my hair was the length that I wanted it to be. They both looked at me and they said, “So what are you thinking about your hair?” And I was like, here’s my idea, because I think Kelly and I look like brother and sister because I’m a ginger. And they started laughing. And I go “I want to dye it dark.” Did you ever see 2 Fast 2 Furious? Well I’m gonna do, not black, but brown or dark brown. They loved that idea. I went and did it, and when I came on set John looked at me and went “Yeah, man. That’s it.” and it’s obviously stuck. Now I’m really grey, so it kind of covers up my age. Q - There’s also a sort of physical heft that Rip has that I don’t recognize in your other roles. Is it something you incorporated into the role? A - I wanted to be bigger than everybody, but it also makes sense to be country strong. He’s not going to a gym. He’s lifting bales of hay and working, so he’s not skinny and muscular. He’s just a big country strong looking guy. So, I put on twenty pounds and most of it, I won’t lie, was weight. It wasn’t tonal muscle. I also think the reality of these guys when they get older is, they start to break down. Again, they’re not going to the gym, they’re not taking growth hormones or anything to be shredded. They eat meat and potatoes, and it’s just kind of who they are. I just wanted to be as authentic as possible. Q - A little hamburger helper too I assume. A - Tuna helper too. Ton of salt in that. You wake up in the morning and look in the mirror and go who’s that guy? Q - In looking at your career before this and the whole concept of this show in terms of ranching and being a horseman, other than The Hi-Lo Country, there wasn’t anything that stuck out. I talked to 8

Luke Grimes before and he said he went to basically horse riding school. How prepared were you for that part of trying to achieve that authenticity? A - So, I grew up, for about six years, in Oregon on a ranch. When I was a kid, I used to have my own horse. I used to ride bareback into the woods of the Oregon countryside. My mom would ring this bell, and wherever I was, the horse would turn and go right back. I couldn’t stop it. He knew that he was going to eat and he knew that mom wanted me back. He’d put his head down and I’d slide right down his mane, that’s how small I was at the time. I rode a lot as a kid so I was never worried about horses. I did a movie called The Last Champion, that came out recently. I was doing a scene in New Mexico on this horse I didn’t know, and they just threw me on and said hey can you haul ass across the desert and we’re gonna film it from afar? So, I went hauling ass on this horse and felt pretty comfortable and next thing I know, I was on my back and I had fractured my back. I don’t know if the horse saw a rattlesnake or just got spooked, and jumped in the air and landed weird and I went flying off of it. Three months after that, and I’m thinking oh my god I have a fractured back and I’m gonna have to get on a horse. Cowboy became a little more painful than I wanted it to be. That Luke Grimes story is true. We went up to the top of the mountain in Utah right outside of Spanish Fork and they put us through a crash course of seven days of just kicking our ass. It was great. Q - Luke said to me when I talked to him recently, “I don’t know if I’ll ever be a real cowboy.” A - It’s not an easy lifestyle and your body takes a beating. I’ve done a lot of things and through these war pictures and doing crazy things in life and stunts, and the walk of the cowboy is very easy for me, I have back issues, and I’ve torn hamstrings, I’ve got torn cartilage in knees, my shoulders. My walk as Rip is real. Q - I see your character as the good son. Luke’s character Kayce is conflicted, Jamie’s character is worse than conflicted, and your character is sort of the illegitimate son who will absolutely show a measure of loyalty to John (Kevin Costner) that no one else will. It’s interesting because you are earning your way into his graces constantly while also being an outsider. A - To back it way up to season one, Lee was supposed to be – if you were to look for a Godfather kind of setting – he was the Sonny, that Don Corleone wanted, or, in our case, John Dutton wanted, to run the ranch. Then he passed away. He’s really Rip’s best friend growing up, they were the same age, Kayce is a little younger than Rip. it’s not that Rip saw an opening to be that for him, but I think he needed that. He lost one of his best friends in John’s son. I think it was just a natural progression for Taylor to start writing that way. Kevin and I just started becoming that. Obviously it becomes a little more complicated when you’re, how do you say it, when you’re screwing his daughter. [Laughs] So John’s a little leery. At any moment he could snap and be really angry. But he never does and that’s part of the reason why John is such an amazing character. Q - You and Costner have a lot of really significant scenes with minimal dialogue. There’s an understanding between Rip and John

JULY 2022

that goes beyond words – in a way that he doesn’t have with his other children. What is it like to try to create that kind of cohesion between you and another actor? And the other actor is Kevin Costner so it’s not like you know the average Joe, obviously. A - Actually it’s easier because it’s Kevin. I think Kevin and I come from the same world. He’s from Ventura, I’m from Santa Barbara originally. That’s where I was born and I grew up for some time there. Our two high schools were huge rivals so there was a lot of shit talk between the two of us. Initially there was always something to talk about. It was just natural. It was a natural easy merger. He’s obviously somebody I had been watching from afar as a fan, some of his movies to me when it comes to Revenge or even The Bodyguard or Dances With Wolves, the list goes on and on, but I’ve always respected his style, the way he’s held himself in his personal life as well. He’s just a good role model in many respects. But that’s kind of what John is too. He’s a great role model, for me meaning Rip. It was such a natural easy thing. You could watch this thing with two actors and there is very little dialogue, but it’s that amazing. That’s kind of the key to what Kevin and I are trying to do. We’re trying to minimize the dialogue but make it entertaining at the same time. I think he and I love that challenge. Q - Luke Grimes said that the interesting thing about working with Kevin is that he’s such an icon that he’s never going to become “your buddy Kev”. A - I don’t know that I would ever call him Kev. [Laughs] I’m not looking for that. I’ve got a lot of friends, I’m good. I’m looking for somebody who I think brings not only a standard and a quality of work to the day, to the scene. We’re about to go on a long journey here in Montana, and what I know I’ll get from Kevin is I will get 110%. To me it’s not about being buds or friends or any of that. It’s about work and about doing great work. And if that happens, which it certainly has with Kevin and I, we have become friends, then great. Q - Kelly Reilly gives a performance that I don’t know is easy to contextualize. Because it could be embarrassing in the wrong hands – the size of her performance. You get the most intimate, in more ways than one, [Laughs] scenes with her. I’m curious about building chemistry. When I look at Rip and Beth, they’re probably the only people that could have married each other. A - They were meant for each other, 1000%. They are soulmates, for good or bad. They’re going to have their differences, their viewpoints. They’re not perfect. This is just my opinion, what Taylor’s done is made these imperfect people that love each other. I think what the audience sees in them is, you know what, no relationship is perfect. A lot of these shows that you watch on television or even in film, it’s like this is horse shit. That’s not real. Taylor has written two characters that have a lot of different colors in them and it depends what day it is to what color you’re going to get. Kelly and I are way different than Rip and Beth. Like I’ve said a thousand times, she’s this really wonderful human being who’s from England. But I think she obviously loves the character that she’s playing. She loves the challenge of it. I love the challenge of going from one episode killing people to the next episode sitting on the porch with her having an emotional moment. Its’ being able to have, as an actor, all those different colors to play. Q - You’re playing a person who doesn’t exist on paper – this person who’s in some ways an illegitimate son, a castoff child, who doesn’t even have a driver’s license or a birth certificate. How does that inform your approach to your character? A - There’s a certain freedom to it. I loved when Taylor told me he’s got no driver’s license, no bank account, he carries cash. I was like man that’s the best thing I’ve ever heard. Like, he still has a flip phone.[Laughs] If you gave him an iPhone, he’d look at you like what are you doing? He doesn’t even know what an app is. That

just doesn’t exist in his world. For me, it was exactly what I was looking for. That throwback to Americana. That man that we’ve kind of lost in this country. It’s unfortunate but true. I’ve met some of them along the way that live off the radar and off the grid and don’t even have phones. That’s how little they care. It’s refreshing for people to see in this country. I love that aspect of the character. It’s such a great detail. Q - This is something I talked to Luke about a little bit too. There’s a tendency to oversimplify this show – mostly by people who haven’t seen it. That it’s built for conservatives so to speak, or that it’s a pro-toxic male masculinity show or whatever. It’s all bullshit obviously it’s a lot more complex than that. Anybody who watches enough of Taylor Sheridan’s previous work should know. What is your reaction to that? Did you go through a period where you were like people don’t really understand what we’re doing here? A - Honestly, I never read the funny papers so I didn’t really know that until the interviewers started asking and I’ve heard that over the last couple of years. I think you hit the nail on the head. People that watch the show understand the complexity of what Taylor is trying to tell in the stories and about what’s going on in America right now in these areas: Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, the water rights, also the American Indian. He’s portrayed and told it the way that it should be told. Also, he’s one of the best writers for women that I’ve ever seen. So the idea that he is writing this masculine, male-driven show, it’s not true. That means they haven’t watched it. That’s all. Q - What’s interesting to me is the first season, the critical response was somewhat mixed. But now through season four, the critics have caught up to the audience. There are SAG nominations. Is it gratifying to see critics and awards groups recognizing the show finally? A - There’s a certain amount of gratification. There’s also a certain amount of sadness in the sense that because of the numbers (ratings) now that critics have caught up, Taylor should have been nominated five years ago, in my opinion, for an Emmy. He’s just that good of a writer. I hope Kelly gets nominated this year, she deserves it. Kevin deserves it. The show deserves it. Taylor deserves it. I’m just happy that more and more people are tuning in. To me, the greatest compliment you can get is the viewership. This year versus last year was just insane to me. The numbers that we broke, the historical landmarks that we have now hit, that’s the reward for hard work. Q - You mentioned Taylor, obviously he’s an unusual talent. I remember watching Hell or High Water, and I was thinking back on how the country has progressed after that. You kind of alluded to this, people who have been forgotten. He connected to that in Hell or High Water and Yellowstone actually continues that. He does this great job of not telling you what to think. He asks the question. A - This is the thing, I come from a family of writers and screenwriters, the best thing you can do for an audience is not to spoon feed them. When you see these network shows on television they’re acting like the audience is stupid and they’re not. The stupider you treat them, the stupider they really are. If you actually treat them as if they’re really smart and they’re going to follow the story lines, they are invested in the show. That’s what Taylor does. He gives you just enough for you to want to come back next week and watch, but also in the end he usually throws you totally off like we did in season three. It just absolutely explodes in your face. He just has this great ability to walk the line when it comes to keeping the audience invested at all times. That’s the sign of a great writer. Q - How has your life changed over these four seasons? Or has it? A - I tell myself all the time I’m always going to be who I am. Obviously this character has struck a chord in not only men but women across this country, across the globe I should say. When I originally got into acting, it was to affect people and to do something that entertained them, enlightened them, educated them in some way. Having that effect on people is the greatest acknowledgement. Has my life changed? Yes. Have I changed? No. I never will. I’ll always be the same person. But, it’s a little easier to get into ball games. [Laughs]

Buster Welch

Fay Owen “Buster” Welch passed away peacefully at home in Abilene, Texas, on Sunday, June 12, 2022. He was born 94 years prior on May 23, 1928, in Sterling County, Texas, the last of eight children born to Charles Owen Welch and Fay Lucas Welch. Within a month of his birth, his mother died. The children were dispersed among relatives and Buster was raised by his grandparents, Bud and Sarah Welch, until his father remarried. From his earliest days, he drew inspiration from horsemen and ranchers. At the age of 13, he ran away from home and began his long and influential life among cowboys, ranchers and horsemen. Before he turned 18, he worked for the Proctor brothers in Midland, the Long X Ranch in Jeff Davis County, and the famed Four Sixes in Guthrie. His intense passion was for the work that called on a good horse. Though ranching was his life’s goal and life’s work, it could not contain him. By the time he was 26, he became a world champion cutting horse trainer, riding Marion’s Girl to the title. By the age of 32, he helped create the National Cutting Horse Association’s pre-eminent event, the NCHA Futurity. Before his career finished, he would win the event a record five times. Buster developed styles of saddles and tack that changed horse training and showing and remain in use by most of today’s competitors. More than that, he developed a reputation as one focused on the greater good of the sport. Buster was generous in advice and assistance to the very people striving against him in the arena. He brought a level of class and dignity to cutting that remains a hallmark of the sport today. In 1974 he signed on with the fabled King Ranch. Riding Mr San Peppy under their banner, he won the NCHA World Championship two more times. A son of Mr San Peppy, Peppy San Badger, more commonly known as “Little Peppy,” became Buster’s magnum opus. jet set of Hollywood were drawn to his easy charm and prepossessing charisma. Working cowboys and horse trainers would flock to his ranch to hang on his every word for insights into his otherworldly abilities with horses and cattle. Vast and varied are the people whom he called friends. His accomplishments, connections and personality contributed to his status as one of the pre-eminent figures in Western American culture. He was inducted into the National Cutting Horse Association Hall of Fame, Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, the American Quarter Horse Association Hall of Fame, won the Foy Proctor Memorial Cowman’s Award, the Golden Spur Award, the Western Horseman Award, the Charles Goodnight Award and a host of other awards and honors too numerous to list here. Buster, furthermore, was dedicated to his family. He hosted Welch family reunions at his ranch and in his later years cherished visits from a vast collection of relatives. In his 94 years he suffered much tragedy, yet he never withdrew in sadness. He continued to engage with his family and friends and manage his business ventures until his death. He stayed horseback until the end. He is predeceased by his wife, Sheila Morris, his grandson Sterling Wilson, his granddaughter Whitney Welch, and his son Greg Welch, and his ex-wife, Ginger. Buster is survived by his sisters Beth Joy (Bob) and Nann McCoy, son, Ken Welch (Dixie), daughters Ruth Ann Welch Williams (Ronnie) and Georgia Welch, son, Dolin Morris (Becky), daughter, Nina Finley (David). He is also survived by his grandchildren: Amy Welch King (Joshua), Katy Welch, Kelly Welch, Lance Welch (Jacque), Jenny LaSeur (Matt), Abby Howard (Tanner), Dawson Burns (Rebecca), Kirby Meadows (Ward), Brooke Morris (Cole), Charlsi Bethea (Tyler). He is also survived by 16 great grandchildren. Though his interests were wide-ranging, he saw everything through the lens of horses and ranching. One of his favorite quotes came from Martha Washington, who once said, “The greater part of our happiness or misery depends on our dispositions and not our circumstances.” Buster strove for a curious, hardworking and cheerful disposition. He leaves a legacy of family who loved him, transcendent horsemanship and the determination to excel in any endeavor to which he put his active mind and ample enthusiasm.

BRAD BARKEMEYER INTERVIEW EXCLUSIVE

BY TRACY WAGER

Q - Taylor Sheridan added cow horse to the Run for a Million.

What effect has that had on the sport? A - The biggest impact has been the increased media and promotion that is going out to the public that did not know about our sport. We have needed that for a long time. The sport has been growing on its own, but not at the rate that we now have seen. Obviously the prize money that has been added is a BIG bonus. It is a big piece of why people are entering and wanting to do more in the sport, but at the same time we are reaching an audience that did not know about cowhorse before.

Q - Your win at the NRCHA Derby in Scottsdale qualified you

for the Run for a Million, what horse will you be taking? A - I am going to take CR Tuff Taffy. Dance with the one that brung ya, right? He has been a really fun horse and I can count on him. He belongs there to compete with those type of horses. I am really excited about it!

Q - You and CR Tuff Taffy have

been together a long-time, what makes the horse special? A - It is mostly is attitude. It is his demeanor. I can trust him and I feel strongly that he trusts me. If I put him in a bad spot, I know that he is going to work his way out of it without any mental breakdowns. Physically, he is a specimen. He is a big strong horse, has good feet. The physicality of the sport, I do not have to worry about him. He is smart about thinking. On a cow, when it goes fast, his brain does not go faster. He stays thinking and in the moment, and that fits my personality a lot. He and I are similar in that regard, where I call it ‘aggressive patience’. The reason we ended up with ‘Tuff’ is John Taylor. He’d been watching him at the shows so when the opportunity to purchase him came up, we pounced. A couple years later, we had some new customers approach us about getting into Cowhorse and John agreed to sell him as long as he stayed in our program. Vaqueros Venture, the current owners, have had an amazing and rare initiation into the Cowhorse business with ‘Tuff’ being their first show horse and already having so much success. We’re so thankful to John and Vaqueros Venture that they have trusted us with this special horse

Q - What are you thinking when you run down the fence? A - It goes back to the ‘aggressive patience’ part. It is being able

to have the adrenaline going, and knowing that there is going to be some high speed involved, but if you can keep your mind slowed 32

down, the whole run slows down. When things are working and the horse and cow are connected, and I can pilot that at a high rate of speed but still have it not going fast in my mind. It is going fast in real life, but my horse and I see it much slower. The other thing is I think about only working the cow that they put in the arena, because we practice so much about the technical pieces of the sport, the function of the horse and the form that they are using. But when it is show time, I tell myself, “Just work the cow that they turned if for you.” The cow may be good and it may be bad, but if you don’t have that pre-conceived idea of how the pattern should go, you are just living in that moment with that particular cow that day.

Q - The competition is fierce what does it take to win? A - #1 is a really, really good horse. When you have these huge

classes and there is a lot of money out there, there are horses coming out of the woodwork that we haven’t seen for a while. It is a lot of fun to see those other horses coming back. But the most important thing is that the horse need to be exceptional. The horse has to be well trained, obviously. And it takes a little bit of luck. That is all there is to it with this event. Especially when things go your way, you have to be able to take advantage of that when they do.

Q - How long does it take to train

a horse to be competitive? A - There is no answer for that. It is completely an individual basis. We all try and strive to have a timeline, but one of the things I have learned over the years is not to get wrapped-up in that timeline. I have had horses ready to go at an early age, and were highly competitive, and I have also had other ones that did not hit their stride until they were 5, 6 and 7 years old. You have to have the patience and the forward thinking to know enough that these horses are worth investing the time, money and patience that it will take to let them develop to be the great athlete that they can be. It has to also be a complete team effort with an understanding that you cannot put a time-line on it.

Q - What schedule do you have for keeping your horses

shod? A - We are on a 5 to 6 week schedule with most of them. One of the things I want to point out is how important it is to have that relationship with your farrier to be able to make changes if something is not working. Making little adjustments, a different type of shoe, wider or aluminum. Everything makes a difference in the horses

JULY 2022

A Family Affair - Brad, Bryce, Mindy and Zane with CR Tuff Taffy

Chris Weaver from Bob’s Saddlery and Brad performance and it has to fit that individual horse. It is easy to get wrapped up in the fact that you have always shod you horse this way, so that is the way we are going to do it. Working with your farrier and sometimes the vet, you have to be able to make those adjustments. I have two farriers I work with here. Jason Johnson and Tim Baker are who we use. I like having two farriers because nobody is the same. Nobody trains a horse the same, nobody shoes a horse the same. Certain horses need a little different touch. I work hard to stay loyal to my people, I try to use the same guys when it is working like that, but at the same time I want to have the availability to make different changes if needed and it not be personal. This is business and what is best for the horse. I work the same with my veterinarians. I do not use just one vet for everything. I have got several vets I work with that I call for several reasons. A main thing is availability. One guy is not always available. There are certain times when we need a vet here and I want to have 2 or 3 vets that I trust that can come and work on our horses. Horses are all different and the devil is in the details. The small things, the minutia, the finite are what can make a huge difference with a 1,000 pound animal. It is the small things that can make the biggest difference. If you are working with the right people, they have the same goal in mind. The health and happiness of the horse. The changes or the treatments that we do for each horse have to be suited to that individual and if it is not a cohesive relationship it won’t work, it has to change.

Q - What kind of feed are you providing for your performance horses? A - Our horses here at Bella Vista eat Alfalfa cubes twice a day,

with Bermuda grass hay at lunch-time. That is the basis of the feed, and we then we add Bluebonnet Omega Force. It is a really good overall performance horse supplement with the micro-nutrients added and it give them the extra energy without getting them hot. Equithrive joint supplement is one of our sponsors and they are a good addition to our program. This product has a natural anti-inflammatory component that they have in their joint supplement. Vitamin E in Arizona is a big one, especially where our forage maybe is not supplying enough. We also feed the Equithrive Vitamin E to a lot of them. During the summer we feed electrolytes also.

Q - How does someone who is already pretty handy on a

horse get in the Cowhorse game? A - The best way is to find a Professional that you can have or develop a good relationship with so that you can learn from somebody who has been there and done that. They should help and advise you to #1 get the right horse and make sure that that is a fit. Then the personality between trainers and clients relationship needs to be established from the start. That includes trust between each other so that you can both communicate. As long as the communication is there, even if the personality in not the best fit, you can at least take what knowledge is available there and then you can perhaps move on to someone else where the personality is a better fit.

Q - Reiners tend to override their horses in the warm-up pen,

we don’t see that in Cowhorse, why not? A - With having to do 3 events, we cannot over-emphasize every specific maneuver. We have to have a little variable there on our horses to think on their own. We also cannot have them so disciplined that they are so tuned in to us. For one, that they don’t pay attention to the cow. And when things go wrong, which they are going too, timing is not always perfect, the situation does not always fit the pattern, so to speak. Our horses have to be spontaneous. These horses have to always react and respond to the riders cue and the current situation. They have to listen to the rider but also be ready to do some work on their own. Q-What is the biggest challenge in cow horse? A-The variable of the cattle is the biggest challenge. Today, the

BRAD BARKEMEYER horses are so good and people are getting their horses really well trained. It is just so deep now, the competition. Every generation says this, right? “I don’t know how these young kids are doing the stuff they are doing?” The sport is evolving. That is a huge challenge, just being able to keep up with the times changing and evolving. Just the variable of having a cow that doesn’t know the pattern, a cow that doesn’t follow the rules and you have to adjust on the fly. You gotta be spontaneous and so does your horse. Q-The NRCHA Western Derby has been held now three-times at WestWorld in June? How do the competitors feel about the air-conditioning at the show grounds, and the horse park in general? A-It was surprising to me, the first year that we had the NRCHA DT Western Derby here at WestWorld in Scottsdale after moving from Paso Robles, how many people had not been here yet. I figured everybody had been to WestWorld! Surprisingly a lot of our Cowhorse folks hadn’t. If they had been here, it had been a while, and they had been here before Scottsdale had made all of the improvements to the facility. It was an overwhelming response with 100% positive response of the facility, the ground, the climate controlled portion of it. Obviously we would like the stalls air-conditioned too because it gets a little warm outside, but in general there is so much room to ride and be inside all hours of the day. People can bring extra horses, 3 year olds and still get work done at the show while they are away from home. It is exceptional and there are not many facilities like it in the Nation. Q-You’ve seen a lot of growth in Rio Verde, since the early days riding with Al Dunning. Did you ever think it would grow into the horse capital of Arizona? A-It doesn’t surprise me at all! #1 our climate is so conducive to horse training, minus a few months in the summer. It just makes sense. Our local economy is so good that we have the ability to have a good customer base. There are plenty of people that we can draw from for our trainers to make a living. When I first moved to Arizona and went to work for Al Dunning there were very few properties in Rio Verde. It was all new to the scene. Everyone thought Al was crazy because he built this horse facility so far away from town. Out in the middle of nowhere. It didn’t take long for that to catch on and people started coming. Once people began to realize what this neighborhood had to offer. The gorgeous view, a beautiful place to be, the weather is great and it’s really not that far away from town. All of those things combined have helped to really explode this neighborhood. Now, there are even more people moving in that are not horse-people so that is one of the challenges we are faced with. Trying to preserve and conserve our horse properties, and be able to have cattle and manure and flies and all the stuff that when people move out here maybe don’t understand. They want the pretty scenery and the open spaces, but they have to accept that the reason the way this is, the way it is, is because of the people and the Western lifestyle that have built their lives here. 34

Q-What are three bits of advice you can offer to folks wanting to get into competing in Cow horse? A- #1 - Get with a Professional that you trust and advise. This is important, as it saves time, money and it keeps you alive! You want to be safe, this is not a sport for everybody. #2 - You need a horse suited for the event. There are a lot of horses out there that are bred to be Cowhorses that just aren’t. Some horses are not bred to be Cowhorses that can do this sport. A good professional can advise in that regards as well. You must have the right animal to do the job. #3 - Don’t be afraid to GO! You have to enter, you have to go to the Horse Show. Don’t be intimidated by the completion or the people that have been doing it a long time. It is such a fun event that it can be a little intimidating. Especially going into it from another discipline. People will find that the Cowhorse group is very welcoming. There is very little ego involved in the Cowhorse, so the people are friendly, they want to talk to you and meet the people coming into the sport. They are helpful, and I just do not see that in other disciplines as much. It is an open invitation to come to join us. I try and present myself by being friendly and open to discussion about goals, their past, where they want to go. Make them feel welcome and just because they are new at it and have not done this sport that they are welcome. I try to just be a good person. It is just basic human principles. The bottom line is, come to the events and just talk to us! We are just normal people that have been doing this a bit longer and have had some success. It does not separate us. Beyond that, the Quarter Horse shows, the local affiliates for NRCHA or AQHA shows are great places to get introduced to the sport and to be able to see it first hand and even participate. It is a low pressure environment, less expense. It is a great place to get some experience and find out if the Cowhorse suits them. One of the other ways that people can get involved with our sport or the Western Performance horse industry are clinics and videos. Bud Lyon and I have worked with Horse & Rider Magazine to create a series of videos on a subscription platform and they have provided a library of informative content. It is called Horse & Rider on Demand and anyone can sign up and get full access. We have training tips, health care, horse care, showing tips, all from young horses to the finished show trained horse, all in a variety of disciplines. We have trainers also from Barrel Racing, Cutting, Team Roping, Natural Horsemanship, Reining, Ranch Riding and this is a great avenue for someone to get a taste for what is involved and learn from some

success. On our dry erase board on the tack-room door is written “WIN” which is an acronym I borrowed from Lou Holtz (famous Notre Dame football coach). It stands for What’s Important Now. We try to live by that and not get wrapped up in what society considers victory.

of the best professionals in our industry. I love the Bridle & Bit Magazine. It has a special place in my career because it was the first place I put my ad in when I started my own business. Mindy and I designed an ad with your help Tracy. We were opening our doors in 2008 and our business model was specializing in diversity. Those were scary times at the start and we knew we could get a good start working with your publication. We have had a really fun, strong business that keeps continuing just like the Bridle & Bit Magazine. We hope that we can be around as long as you guys and that it never goes away. Q-How has your family played a role in your success? A-It’s everything! I am extra blessed that way. I’ve been blessed with an amazing wife and two great sons. We’re all in this together, so everyone gets a hand in all aspects of the business. I’m so proud of our boys. Bryce (16) won the AQHA Youth Cowhorse Boxing World Championship in 2019 and continues to compete in Cowhorse and roping when he’s not playing football and going to high school. Zane (13) is a natural with the horses, but his main focus is competitive dance. He’s very accomplished and has been recognized on the national stage for his dance including being awarded a contract with a talent agency in LA. Student government, school and church activities and chores keep him very busy. Raising kids is a lot like horse training. Discipline and consistency with the hope of mutual respect resulting in good citizens. Mindy is our best cheerleader. No matter the activity she’s there to support us. I’m very proud of her show pen accomplishments including 2013 AQHA World Champion Amateur Cowhorse Boxing and 2016 NRCHA Non-Pro Boxing Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion. I’m even more proud of her ability to give unselfishly. You can always hear her cheering with unmistakable familiarity. I believe that together we have worked to maintain balance. Not always are we successful with that, but humility, faith, and focus on priorities are a few of the things that keep us from being consumed by the work that this lifestyle demands. Our extended family is spread out between Arizona, Montana, New Mexico and Texas. All of whom are very supportive and with the help of live streaming they get to stay involved when travel isn’t an option. Besides immediate family, the horse business has a way of turning business relationships into friendships. We’ve been blessed with great clients, sponsors, peers, and industry professionals involved in all facets of the sport. Many, too many to name, have become like family and have an integral role in what we consider

Q-Sponsors help to pay the bills and elevate one’s persona in the arena. How have you benefited from your sponsors? A-When I first started and was working for Al it not only helped set the pace for me to start my own business, but it offered many benefits. One of these was to help him with his Sponsorships and it gave me the ability to learn how he developed those relationships as well as maintain these relationships. What it came down to was maintaining a personal relationship with those people so that you are just not using the product and they are just not using you as a face to get their product out. It should be a sincere appreciation for the product, and we do not use products that we do not believe in. We don’t work with people that we do not believe in. I do not expect a sponsor to the do that either. So when I put your name on my shirt, I am going to treat it as if it were mine. This is invaluable to both the sponsor and the rider. Aligning a great product with the right person to help promote that product. When you say, “Elevating one’s persona” I think that when you ride into the arena with someones name or logo on your shirt it shows the public, the judges, the spectators, whomever, that somebody else is believing in what you are doing. That is what horse showing is all about. Showing that confidence and expressing that picture in the arena for that moment that you are the best that there is! You have to walk into that arena every time like you are the best. That your horse is the best, and you are going to do it better than everybody else. That is the goal. Obviously that doesn’t happen very often. The guys that can consistently ride and win at that high-level, I have a lot of respect for. I strive to be one of those guys everyday and I will continue to do that. One of the things that the Sponsors do that maybe they do not realize is that it is not a big money deal, like a Nike endorsement in the big sports that the Professional athletes are getting, it is having a company stand behind you and say, “We believe in you and what you are doing and how you are doing it”. So, that piece is HUGE. Most of our sponsors are providing product, it is not a lot of cash trading hands. That is pretty common in the Western Performance industry. The products that we are getting and using are the benefit. For a horse trainer to make it financially and to do a good job,

Veterinarian’s Office, the Colorado Department of Corrections and the Bureau of Land Management have begun a review of the events surrounding the outbreak at the Canon City facility to identify ways to help prevent and mitigate future disease outbreaks. The BLM’s Comprehensive Animal Welfare Program Compliance Assessment Team last week reviewed the facility’s compliance with BLM’s animal welfare standards for off range corrals. The results of the BLM review are available online at Bureau of Land Management | Compliance Assessment. “This review will allow us to better understand management factors that may have contributed to this outbreak so we can better understand how to avoid another outbreak,” said BLM Colorado Acting State Director Stephanie Connolly. “We are encouraged by the improving health of the West Douglas horses and the cooperation between the BLM and the State of Colorado in responding to this outbreak.” “Diagnostic testing of samples obtained from horses that were autopsied on the first few days of the outbreak has been completed. Microscopic examination of the tissues has confirmed the cause of the high mortality disease outbreak as bronchopneumonia characterized by severe acute pulmonary edema, hemorrhage, necrosis and suppurative processes. These finding are consistent with the previously identified H3N8 equine influenza virus and streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus infections,” said Dr. Albert Kane, a veterinary epidemiologist with the US Department of Agriculture who works as an advisor to the BLM Wild Horse and Burro Program. “Virus isolation, DNA sequencing and additional laboratory investigations to better understand the host, agent and environmental factors that contributed to the unusually high mortality seen among the West Douglas horses are ongoing. It is anticipated that it could take several weeks or months to complete this second phase of the outbreak investigation,” he said. The voluntary quarantine of the facility will remain in place at least until July 1, 2022. During this time enhanced disease surveillance and monitoring will include regular visits to the facility by the attending veterinarians. Veterinarians and epidemiologists with the US Department of Agriculture and the Colorado Department of Agriculture including the State Veterinarian of Colorado will continue to monitor the situation and advise the BLM during the quarantine period and take measures to reduce the risk of similar outbreaks occurring in the future.

they have to have the right equipment. Especially when you are first starting out you don’t have the resources to have all brand-new splint boots, or saddle pads. So you are scraping by and making do with what you have. Those sponsors give you that boost and that leg up where you can start using better products and making your horses more comfortable. Plus it makes your public appearance of having nice things. And that is contagious. When people see that, and you pull into the parking lot and your truck and trailer are washed up and in good condition, that gives people a better image of you. Thats sad but true. Like the models that are airbrushed on the cover of a magazine, that is not real, it doesn’t really mean anything, but our society, our public image is effected by all of those things. Bob’s Saddles, I was fortunate enough to meet Bob Haley while working for Al and his tack company AD Tack. We sold a lot of Bob’s Saddles thru Al’s tack business so I got to work consistently with Bob. When it was time for me to go out on my own I wanted to get a saddle deal with the best in the business, so I went right to Bob’s and he was generous enough to put Brad & Mindy me on the team. I had a history with the new owner of Bob’s and Chris Weaver, who runs Bob’s Saddlery now. I met him ironically when he worked for Weaver Leather. This is such a small world and we have so many people who become acquaintances, who then become friends, who become business partners. It is a neat thing, because I do not know many things where you become friends with your business associates like we can in the horse industry. I completely believe in the Bob’s Saddles product and I am happy to be part of the promotion of the brand and to be on their team. Weaver Leather was a happy accident. They approached Al about doing a photo shoot because they had some new product to put into their new catalog. Al had a conflict of interest with another sponsor, and could not do it, so he passed that along to me. I developed a relationship with Chris Weaver. That first photoshoot took 4 or 5 days and they had boxes and boxes of tack and equipment that we had to get all photographed. What they discovered and liked about me was my diversity. Because I could rope, I could cut, I could go down the fence, I could do the Reining, we could trail ride. Plus I had horses that could all of those events and do it well. We did that photoshoot and really did not have to outsource anything and we never had to change location either. The Almosta had it all. Mr. Versatile became Mr. Versatile just like the Weaver Leather products. They have everything, from the back-yard simplest gear for the starter to what I use in the performance horse arena. I actually use Weaver leather and ride in a Bob’s saddle everyday at home or at the show. All of our embroidered halters, winter blankets, sheets, coolers, leather care, blankets, pads, everything leather……that is a lot and it sure means a lot to a horse trainer and I appreciate them so much! We have been with Justin Boots for a long time. They have been great to work with and I have worn Justin Boots since I can remember. My family says kindergarten. That is kinda cool to have that history and then to be a part of it! Wrangler Jeans, that is the same, when I was growing up that

was all there was. There was not anything else - shirts or jeans. That was just what you wore, that was the uniform if you were going to be a Cowboy. They have changed with the times, but have still stayed the same. I am so happy to be with them. Bex Sunglasses which is an important piece of my daily equipment, especially here in Arizona. The sun here is not just really brite, it can really damage your eyes. It is important to wear really high quality sunglasses and Bex, they are the best! Logan Coach Horse Trailers have really stepped up and changed their products. My horses travel down the road safe and comfortable. Absorbine, they are like Justin Boots and Wrangler jeans. I can remember not being old enough to ride a horse and going to the barn and my dad having a huge can of HoofFlex in the tack room. I would watch my dad and the guys use the liniment, the fly spray and then, later on Show Sheen. Now that was a game-changer then and still today there is nothing better that Show Sheen. Equithrive is my main feed supplement. The Vitamin E, and the electrolytes are pellets so the horses eat every last bit, they will even eat it out of your hand. The science is behind these product, and I leave that up to them, but I know my horses eat it all so I know they are getting what they need everyday and not leaving it in the feeder. Their gut supplement has really worked well. I have had horses with ulcers and since we have started feeding this product we have not had to go back to Gastro-Guard on any of our horses that needed it before. They have a joint supplement that has really made a difference in our barn. We are not injecting hocks or the other joints as often as we used too. We put a lot of stress on these horses physically so anything that we can do to reduce inflammation and wear and tear is another game-changer. Bimeda is another sponsor and they provide us with wormer and also a product called Polyglycan that helps to increase joint fluid and increase cartilage in the joints. It is a once a month intermuscular injection. Between this product and the Equithrive joint supplement we are injecting a LOT less joints than we did before. Bluebonnet Feeds provides us with all of our grain. They have a hind-gut supplement regiment that works really well to prevent issues and also helps to re-set the hind-gut. Most ulcer medications work in the stomach, this product is created to work in the hind-gut to make sure there is healthy bacteria in there and that the horses digestive system is working properly while also preventing ulcers. The Bluebonnet Omega Force Intensify grain is fed daily, my horses look really good and they have great energy but they are not hot when we ride, train or show. We actually are feeding less quantity, having better results and still providing our horses with all of the nutrition that they need to perform. Greenberg Land and Livestock, longtime clients that have become family and have and continue to supply us with some great horses. Lonestar Ropes, for the best ropes in the business whether we’re team roping or ropin muleys for the steer stopping they have the right rope for the job. Smarty, for the best practice without live cattle. Smarty roping dummies, sleds, and their new synergy tack line partnering with Weaver Leather are exceptional. Western Legacy Custom Hats. A cowboy hat that looks and feels great helps carry on the traditions of the Western lifestyle that we’re preserving and passing on that legacy for generations to come

NRCHA APPROVES COWBOY CLASS FOR 2023

The National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) has voted and approved implementing rules for the Cowboy Class for the 2022 Snaffle Bit Futurity ® and in the 2023 NRCHA Rule Book. The Cowboy Class introduces working ranch cowboys to the reined cow horse. Beginning in 2023, the Cowboy Class will be a recognized class, and local affiliates and show producers will be allowed to host these classes at their approved NRCHA events. It will be recognized as a 38

sanctioned Category 1 special event, similar to the all-around and spectacular classes. “Reined cow horse grew from training methods used on ranches by the Vaqueros. NRCHA has continued to support cross over from working ranch horses and cowboys into our arenas through the Cowboy Clinics and Cowboy Invitational for several years now,” said Anna Morrison, NRCHA executive director. “Establishing the Cowboy Class as an official class in our rulebook was the natural next step to honor and grow our sport’s connection with ranching.” Eligibility for this class will be limited to individuals working on ranching and livestock operations, and who have earned less than $15,000 in NRCHA Open and Non Pro monies outside of the Cowboy Class. The rules for the Cowboy Class can be found online at nrcha. com/snaffle-bit-futurity and will be listed in the 2023 rule book. The NRCHA will welcome working ranch cowboys to the Cowboy Invitational presented by XIT Ranch during The Run For A Million event, August 17-20 in Las Vegas, Nevada, and the Cowboy Class

WORLD CHAMP TYSON DURFEY SHOWS DALLAS COWBOYS LEIGHTON VANDER ESCH THE ROPES BY TRACY RENCK Tyson Durfey, 2016 PRCA Tie-Down Roping World Champion, and Dallas Cowboys linebacker Leighton Vander Esch were filming for an upcoming Polaris campaign at Durfey's ranch. Throughout the day, Tyson taught Leighton, along with Leighton's wife Maddy, proper roping technique, toured his property and wrapped the day with a barbeque down by Brazos River. Also, as part of the shoot Maddy, a barrel racer, spent the day with star barrel racer Lisa Lockhart. They had the chance to practice in Tyson's indoor arena, chat about proper technique and much more. "Got to spend the day with Tyson Durfey and Lisa Lockhart filming a super cool series for Polaris Off-Road – can't get much better than spending a day with such great genuine people. One I will remember forever," Vander Esch said. Leighton and Maddy grew up in the small town of Riggins, Idaho, which has a population of less than 400 people. Vander Esch was a star football player in Riggins and went on to have a standout career with Boise State University in his home state. He was drafted in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft – No. 19 overall – by the Dallas Cowboys. He was selected to the 2018 NFL All-Rookie Team. He has played in 52 career games and has 349 total tackles, 3 interceptions and 2½ sacks. Durfey, a 13-time qualifier for the NFR – 2007-11, 2013-19 – was impressed with the 6-foot-4, 255-pound Van Esch's roping ability. "Leighton and I did some roping and tying, and we had a great time," said Durfey about his first-time meeting Vander Esch.

"At their house down here in Texas, Leighton ropes the roping dummy all the time in their backyard. For no more than he had done (roping), Leighton is an incredible athlete. He's obviously big and strong and fast. One thing I was impressed about him was his coach ability. I could tell him to do something, and he would immediately implement it into the next run. Normally people have to go through hours of practice and repetition to get that done, but he was able to implement things ASAP." Durfey also praised the character of Vander Esch and his wife. "Obviously, he is a big guy, but the thing that impressed the most about him was the authenticity of he and his wife. There are just incredibly nice people and their willingness to participate and their love for the sport was super cool to see. He was just so humble and so nice. It is nice seeing someone who is that successful, who is that humble and down to Earth. He would fit in with a bunch of guys behind the chutes talking. He is just that kind of guy and it made for a really fun day. It was an incredible experience. "People all put their pants on the same way, and I like being around people who believe that. Rather you're the wealthiest, most famous person in the world or you're just a normal human being. To me, he embodied that. I thought he and wife were incredibly impressive. You can tell they are small town folks with really good values and really good ethics."

How can horse owners help with the equine vet shortage?

By Adam Reed The number of equine veterinarians is not keeping up with demand, according to the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP). In response, the AAEP is hoping horse and stable owners will take steps to help make the profession more attractive. News 18 spoke with Dr. Meg Mueller at Osseo-Augusta Veterinary Clinic, who said she has seen this shortage slowly getting worse since back when she first entered vet medicine over a decade ago. She pointed to factors like the physical dangers and demands of working with horses as one 40

part of the problem, but is on the same page with the AAEP’s recommendations for horse owners to change the way they treat their vet. "People expect instant gratification, and I think that's a huge part of it," Mueller said. "When we call and say, 'We're booked out several weeks, and if we're going to work you in, it's going to cost more.' [It's] because that's going to mean we are going to have to really triage and do some other things on our end to make it work. So, that attitude really makes a huge difference." At LilliCrest Farm just a few miles south of Osseo, barn

manager Maddie Apriesnig said she has seen the strain on local vets, and thinks horse owners can be a huge part of the solution in getting the profession back on track -- simply by keeping in mind that vets are real people with a stressful job. "It can definitely be tricky to remember that when there's something wrong with your horse and all you want is for the problem to be fixed right now," Apriesnig said. "For a lot of people, horses aren't just horses, they are their pets too, and they see them as family, and we all just want our pets to be taken care of."

JULY 2022

The AAEP recommends a few steps horse owners can take to improve the equine medicine profession. Observing normal business hours, except in the case of a true emergency, can go a long way toward easing the strain on staffs. Being on time with payments and keeping horses cleaned and well-behaved is another great way to not only make the vet's job more pleasant, but also more efficient. Lastly, the AAEP reminds horse owners how important it is to say 'thank you.' Taking a moment to show your appreciation for the work vets do really goes a long way.

Todd Bergen riding Smartly Starstruck for the McSpyder Ranch topped the field with a 443 and secured a check for $8,265. “Coming into the qualifier, you knew it was going to be deep and it was going to be tough, just by looking at the horses and the riders 52

competing here,” NRCHA Two Million Dollar Rider, Todd Bergen said. “I felt very fortunate to be able to put together two good runs and qualify for Vegas this year. It is great to see events like this putting big money up for the bridle horses.” Just like the Las Vegas qualifier, the cow work concluded with a tie for the eighth qualifying spot. This time, the tie was between Cara Hencratt riding Playing One Time, owned by the Rocking BS Ranch, and Chris Dawson aboard Reyzinette, owned by Holy Cow Performance Horses. Dawson marked a 224 in the fence work run-off to win the tie breaker and secure the final spot for The Run For A Million. The eight riders who

qualified in Scottsdale are Todd Bergen from Eagle Point, Oregon, Brad Barkemeyer from Scottsdale, Arizona, Justin Wright from Santa Maria, California, Erin Taormino of Dennis, Texas, Matt Koch of Elizabeth, Colorado, Sarah Dawson from Perrin, Texas, Kelby Phillips of Weatherford, Texas, and Chris Dawson from Perrin, Texas. “Once again, The Run For A Million qualifier proved to be a draw, enticing our top horseman to bring their best bridle horses to the DT Horses Western Derby and compete for their chance at a spot in Las Vegas,” said Anna Morrison, NRCHA executive director. “With all of the qualifying spots settled we’re ready to set our sights on August when we’ll cheer on 16

Debbie Crafton of Ordway, Oregon, secured the Non Pro title aboard her 2017 gelding, Hesa Wee Bet (Bet Hesa Cat x Wee Quejana Gal x Quejanaisalena). In the finals, the pair marked 652 (H:213/ R:219.5/ C:219.5) and took a check for $10,000. Arizona’s Jenn Kasper & A Cool Backstory Level 3 Co-Champion, Level 2 Reserve Champion, & Level 1 Champion

When Jenn Kasper set her sights on the 6666 NRHA Derby presented by Markel, she had one goal in mind; make the Non Pro Level 4 Finals for the first time. When the final results had been tabulated, she and her horse, A Cool Backstory, had squeaked into the Finals. Then she and A Cool Backstory,

by SG Frozen Enterprize out of Skeets Chexy Nic, went to work. Their score of 216.5 in the Finals Friday night was good enough to win the Level 1, take second in Level 2, and split the Championship of Level 3, plus finish tied for 10th in the Level 4, bringing the Friday night take to $30,139,

with $1,507 going to nominator Gabrielle Solum. “I am so excited. I’ve showed horses my whole life, but this is only my second Derby, and my first Level 4 Finals. I’m really glad this horse gets the recognition he deserves because he’s really special,” Kasper, of Fountain Hills, Arizona, said.

The 5-year-old gelding definitely has a cool back story. “When he was born he had a ruptured bladder, and when they did the surgery and he was on his back, he had a reaction to the drugs that ended up causing a chemical burn across his back,” Kasper explained. “It took six to eight months to heal, and they didn’t know if he could be a show horse, but he’s pretty tough and he’s turned into a great one!” In fact, Kasper’s boyfriend, Leonardo Kellerman, trained and showed the colt his three and four-year-old years, earning more than $29,000. “I was fortunate to be able to buy him and show him this year. He’s a really special horse with a lot of try, and I really love him,” she said. “I’ve been fortunate to have a lot of horses in my life, but none come close to him.” Kasper and A Cool Backstory are coming off a successful National Reining Breeders Classic. Since then, the colt has been in Gabriel Borges’ barn. “That means I get to ride him pretty much every day at home. Luckily, he’s pretty easy to prepare because he’s an easy guy. We just kept him fit, and it worked out,” she said. “I thank Gabriel because he did a great job preparing this horse, as well as everyone else at Gabriel Borges Reining Horses. I also thank my boyfriend, Leonardo, who is always there for me and is the one who trained this horse. Thank you to my mom who has supported me my whole life, and all the other incredible people behind the scenes.” Kasper, who is the social media and marketing manager for numerous clients in the reining industry pulled doubleduty at the Derby. More than one person commented that she was one of the hardest workers at the event. Mason McDowell and his horse Guns Blazing took Reserve honors in the Level 1.

Casey Deary Wins 6666 NRHA Derby

Americasnexttopgun and Casey Deary rode into the danger zone Saturday night during the 6666 National Reining Horse Association Derby Open Level 4 Finals, posting a 223.5 that could not be touched. “This horse is so explosive and so talented that he can do things that are hard to sit on. In fact, even changing leads there I lost my stirrup. He’s just so physical,” Deary said. Following a Reserve Championship in the Level 4 Open at the NRBC in April, Deary knew there was more to be had and reevaluated his preparation methods for “Maverick.” “I needed to adjust to get him shown in this heat and humidity,” Deary said. “I

62

didn’t warm him up nearly as much as I would normally do. He’s so talented that, as long as I can stay out of trouble, he’s a pretty consistent [earner].” Deary rode Maverick “very little” throughout the two weeks in hot and humid Oklahoma City. To prepare before the finals, Maverick was turned out for a total of four hours in the large round-pens on the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds. “Getting ready to lope off, I was a little nervous that I had left him a little too fresh, but as soon as I loped off and he went to work he hooked right up. I couldn’t ask him to be better,” Deary said. The list of Deary Performance Horses people to thank is long and includes veterinarians, farriers and help at home. “There are too many to list here, but [mostly] my number one supporter, Nicole, has been there cheering me on through the whole deal, and Jody and Jolan [Puno] have backed this horse with everything they have,” Deary concluded.

New York Racehorse veterinarian pleads guilty in federal doping case

Gina Carano-Led Western ‘Terror on the Prairie’ Gina Carano’s big-screen comeback now has a new trailer and a release date. The Daily Wire today rolled out a full trailer for Terror on the Prairie directed by veteran filmmaker Michael Polish (Northfork, Twin Falls Idaho) from a script by Josiah Nelson. The plot centers on a family that fights back against a gang of vicious outlaws hell-bent on revenge. Carano toplines a cast that includes Nick Searcy, MMA star Cowboy Cerrone, stand-up Tyler Fischer, Gabriel-Kane Day-Lewis, Heath Freeman, Samaire Armstrong, Travis Mills, Matthias Hues, Rhys Becker, Izzy Marshall, Jeremy Gauna and Thomas White Eagle.

Grasso helped the corrupted trainers involved collect over $47 million in illegally acquired purse winnings. This case is currently being handled by the Office’s Money Laundering and Transnational Criminal Enterprises Unit. Assistant United States Attorneys Sarah Mortazavi and Anden Chow are overseeing the prosecution.1 Louis Grasso, DVM, and Racehorse Trainer Richard Banca pleaded guilty to distributing and administering prohibited performance-enhancing drugs.

Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced earlier this week that veterinarian Louis Grasso and trainer Richard Banca plead guilty to their participation in the distribution of adulterated and misbranded drugs with the intent to defraud and mislead. According to a United States Department of Justice release, the charges were filed in connection with United States v. Grasso et al., 20 Cr. 163 (OKC).1 “Grasso and Banca represent the corruption and greed of those in the racehorse industry looking to win at any cost. In peddling illegal drugs and selling prescriptions to corrupt trainers, Louis Grasso abdicated his responsibilities as a medical professional to ensure the safety and health of the racehorses he ‘treated,’” said Williams.1 “By injecting horses with unnecessary and, at times, unknown drugs, Grasso risked the lives and welfare of the animals under his care, all in service of helping corrupt racehorse trainers like Banca line their pockets through fraud. These latest convictions demonstrate the commitment of this Office and of our partners at the FBI to hold accountable individuals seeking to profit from animal abuse and deceit,” he continued. According to court documents1, the charges in this case came from an investigation of “widespread schemes by racehorse trainers, veterinarians, PED distributors, and others to manufacture, distribute, and receive adulterated and misbranded PEDs and to secretly administer those PEDs to racehorses competing at all levels of professional horseracing.” These schemes involve participants evading PED prohibits and deceiving regulators and horse racing officials to improve race performance and receive prize money at racetracks throughout the United States. These schemes put the racehorse’s health and wellbeing at risk. Grasso allegedly accepted payment in exchange for him to write prescriptions for the performance-enhancing drugs and creating, distributing, and administering custom-made performanceenhancing drugs that were adulterated and misbranded substances. The goal of these drugs was solely to improve the performance of the horses. 66

The Western was due for release June 14, and per the company, it will be available for streaming on DailyWire.com. Today’s trailer follows an earlier 60-second teaser that debuted in February. Carano produced alongside Dallas Sonnier (Bone Tomahawk) and Amanda Presmyk (Run Hide Fight) through their production company Bonfire Legend. Terror on the Prairie marks The Daily Wire’s third collaboration with Bonfire Legend. Daily Wire co-founders Ben Shapiro, Jeremy Boreing and Caleb Robinson are credited as executive producers alongside Voltage Pictures’ Nicolas Chartier and Jonathan Deckter, who handled foreign sales. Mills and Danielle Cox also received executive producer credits. Days after she was fired from the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, the mixed martial artist turned actress praised The Daily Wire for partnering with her on the project. “The Daily Wire is helping make one of my dreams — to develop and produce my own film — come true. I cried out and my prayer was answered. I am sending out a direct message of hope to everyone living in fear of cancellation by the totalitarian mob,” she said in a statement to The Daily Wire at the time. “I have only just begun using my voice which is now freer than ever before, and I hope it inspires others to do the same. They can’t cancel us if we don’t let them.”

Arizona Ridge Riders defeat Oklahoma Freedom

to remain perfect in North Carolina PBR Team Series Preseason Event By Kacie Albert: TRYON, N.C. – At the final PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Team Series Preseason event of the year in Tryon, North Carolina, no team was more dominant than the Arizona Ridge Riders. Rebounding from a dismal 0-2 showing at the first preseason event in Bismarck, North Dakota, the Ridge Riders were a picture of perfection at the PBR Tryon Chute Out, winning both of their games and posting the lone qualified ride of the Bonus Round. “Well, we just wrapped up the big win here in Tryon at the last preseason,” said Arizona Ridge Riders Technical Coach Paulo Crimber. “Alisson de Souza was one of our heavy hitters. He’s going to be on the team going to Cheyenne for sure, and he pulled the weight. He led the way for the younger guys and showed them it’s possible to win, no matter what you’ve got. If you do what you’re supposed to do, it still works. I’m very proud. We’re going back to TR9 to get our camp going and get them guys more ready for Cheyenne.” As action got underway at the Tryon International Equestrian Center Friday evening, the Arizona Ridge Riders earned the team’s first victory when they beat the Nashville Stampede, 170-86. Continuing their momentum Saturday night in front of a sold-out crowd, the Ridge Riders won their second consecutive game, defeating the Oklahoma Freedom 255.5-86. The Ridge Riders clinched the event win as the only team to be flawless in gameplay in Tryon. With the Bonus Round remaining, the Ridge Riders used their first pick in the draft to have Alisson de Souza (Taubate, Brazil) take on Mike’s Motive (Blake Sharp/High Voltage Cattle/American Spirits/Koe Wetzel). As the only team to reach the requisite 8, Souza punctuated the Ridge Riders’ dominant showing with an 89.5-point ride. In the overall preseason standings, the Arizona Ridge Riders finished third, going 2-2 in gameplay and amassing 509.25 aggregate and 11 Bonus Round points. The regular season for the 2022 PBR Team Series will begin July 25-26 in Cheyenne, Wyoming, held during the iconic Cheyenne Frontier Days. Action will begin nightly at 6:45 p.m. MT. CBS Sports Network will carry the action LIVE at 10 p.m. ET. The game matchups for the first day of the regular season on July 25 are: Texas Rattlers vs. Missouri Thunder Carolina Cowboys vs. Nashville Stampede Oklahoma Freedom vs. Kansas City Outlaws Austin Gamblers vs. Arizona Ridge Riders PBR RidePass on Pluto TV will offer re-airs and on-demand replays of all the PBR Team Series action. PBR RidePass is available on desktops, laptops, and mobile devices via www.pluto.tv. Tune to channel 720 for the latest programming schedule. 78

Arizona Ridge Riders: 255.50 Oklahoma Freedom: 86.00 In one of the best efforts delivered by a team throughout the preseason for the inaugural PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Team Series, the Arizona Ridge Riders outscored the Oklahoma Freedom by two ride scores to win their second consecutive game at the Tryon Chute Out, beating the Sooner State team 255.5-86. Alisson de Souza (Taubate, Brazil) again set the tone early for the Ridge Riders, besting White Squirrel (Obernagel/Sho-Me Rodeo) for 82 points in their first attempt of the game. The score gave the Ridge Riders an early lead after the Oklahoma Freedom’s Dawson Branton (Jefferson, Oregon) was upended by Mic Drop (UTC/Sellers Bucking Bulls) in 3.01 seconds. In the next set of outs for each team, Ross Freeman (Kountze, Texas) was unable to continue the momentum for the Ridge Riders, and while Eli Vastbinder (Statesville, North Carolina) came down short of the requisite 8 for the Freedom, he was awarded a re-ride. With Vastbinder slammed down hard on the dismount, Freedom Head Coach Cord McCoy elected to sub in Branton for the re-ride, which would be the last out of the evening. As the fierce game continued, both teams converted in their next outs. With Freedom rider Briggs Madsen (Tremonton, Utah) riding Light It Up (Nothin’ But Try Ranch/Kinser/McCall) for 86 points and Ridge Riders contender Tyce Willis (Alvord, Texas) covering Uncle Gangster (Pick-It Hammers) for 87.25 points, the scoreboard read 169.25-86. The Ridge Riders held a slim 83.25-point lead as the game eclipsed the halfway mark. The fourth out for the Freedom and Ridge Riders both ended in buckoffs, and the tension was high as the fifth-slot riders readied for each roster. Following a heartbreaking 7.9-second buckoff by Trevor Kastner (Ardmore, Oklahoma) atop Keep ’em Guessin (UTC/Sellers Bucking Bulls), Koltin Hevalow (Smithville, Missouri) had the chance to clinch the victory for his team, despite the Freedom still awaiting their reride attempt. Matching Feeling Dangerous (Nothin’ But Try Ranch/ Kinser/McCall) jump-for-jump, Hevalow reached the 8 for a victorysealing 86.25 points. With Branton bucking off the Freedom’s re-ride bull, the Arizona Ridge Riders sealed their second victory in Tryon, beating the Freedom 255.5-86. The Arizona Ridge Riders advanced to the Bonus Round with an unblemished 2-0 record, while the Freedom fell to 1-1 following their stunning upset of the home-state favorite Carolina Cowboys on Friday night. “Tonight, Arizona, we got another win on the board, and the greatest thing to me was Tyce Willis getting through, making a great ride,” said Arizona Ridge Riders Technical Coach Paulo Crimber. “And Koltin Hevalow, he got the bull once before and bucked off towards the whistle, but today, he finished him strong. All of the team is working together, and Alisson is leading the way, and it seems to be working, which is amazing. We are looking forward to the real season.”

ASPCA supports ban of horse slaughter in legislative hearing On May 26, 2022, the US House Subcommittee held a legislative hearing and on the agenda were 2 critical equine protection bills. The first, Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act, is federal legislation that would permanently ban horse slaughter in the United States and end the export of American horses for slaughter abroad. The second, Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act, would end the cruel practice of horse soring where chemicals and devices are used to inflict pain on show horses to force an exaggerated, high-stepping gait often referred to as the “Big Lick.”

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) stood before the Subcommittee and testified in support of these bills. Katie Kraska, director of federal legislation for the ASPCA stated, “Congress voted to ban horse slaughter well over a decade ago by large bipartisan majorities in the House and Senate and acted more than four decades ago to end the cruel practice of horse soring, but legal loopholes have allowed American equines to be exported to other countries for slaughter, and horse soring to persist largely due to industry self-policing.” Despite efforts that have blocked the operation of horse slaughterhouses in the US since 2007, tens of thousands of American horses continue to be shipped to Canadian and Mexican slaughterhouses that supply other countries with horsemeat.

SAGE KIMZEY OUT WITH SHOULDER INJURY

BY TRACY RENCK

Sage Kimzey, a seven-time PRCA Bull Riding World Champion, including in 2021, is out for the remainder of the 2022 season with a left shoulder injury. Kimzey had been bothered by a left shoulder injury since high school, and the injury came to a head when he was bucked off Pete Carr Pro Rodeo's Severe Weather at the Parker County Sheriff's Posse Frontier Days and PRCA Rodeo, June 10 in Weatherford, Texas.

"I have been riding with a hurt shoulder for a real long time," said Kimzey, 27. "I dislocated it in high school and tore a bunch of stuff up and it never came out again until Weatherford (June 10). It popped out when I was riding him. I always swore that if it ever came out, I wasn't going to be one of those guys who wrecked his shoulder joint just to keep going to get on bulls. This has been a prolonged wait to have surgery on it. I knew I needed it fixed ever since high school.

Winter Circuit Promoters Lease Del Mar Horsepark By Luke Harold

Special events management company Hits LLC has been awarded the lease to Del Mar Horsepark, after a different company that submitted a winning proposal could not agree on terms. The company, based in upstate New York, said in a news release that it wants to reopen horsepark in 2023. Located on 65 acres about three miles east of the Del Mar Fairgrounds at the corner of El Camino Real and Via de la Valle in the San Dieguito River Valley, the venue has long hosted horse shows and other events. It closed in 2021 until infrastructure updates to satisfy Regional Water Quality Control Board requirements could be addressed.

The Del Mar Fairgrounds board of directors, which oversees the property, has been looking for a lessee to implement approximately $3-4 million of wastewater management measures that would allow it to reopen. Tom Struzzieri, president and CEO of Hits, has presided over multiple facilities throughout the country, including two in California. “The benefit of being a lifelong horseman, rather than just an investor, gives me a unique perspective in not only developing and designing facilities, but also in acting as a horseman in the coordination of events,” he said in a statement. “These skills will be instrumental after witnessing the challenges the sport has experienced this past year. I look forward to starting the project of renovating one of the most iconic horse facilities in the country, and then producing some of California’s most outstanding events.” Dale Harvey, CEO of West Palm Communications, was originally selected to be the lessee. But on June 6, several months after his proposal won, Harvey announced that he and the district couldn’t reach an agreement.

88

"Obviously I was wanting to get through my career before I had to have it fixed, but the good Lord had other plans." Kimzey saw Dr. Tandy Freeman in Dallas on June 14 and learned that season-ending surgery would be required on his shoulder. "I have multiple tears in my labrum, and I have got a totally torn supraspinatus (which is one of the rotator cuff muscles)," Kimzey said. "I have a displaced bicep tendon and a broken collarbone. I also have some other rotator cuff damage. It is a culmination over the years. I think most of it probably happened during the wrecks when I was in high school. When I was a sophomore in high school, I was probably 16 and I got bucked off a bull and then the bull fell on me and hurt my left shoulder. "I never had surgery. I just took time off and it was always good enough to ride. It is going to be such a complex surgery that Tandy is going to reach out to a bunch of his orthopedic peers to get a game plan." Kimzey is third in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $115,633 and qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo eight consecutive years. Kimzey also has won five of the past seven PRCA Division 1 Xtreme Bulls Tour titles, including last year. Despite the setback, Kimzey was able to keep things in perspective. "I feel extremely blessed that I made it 10 years because most guys don't make it eight years with a bum shoulder," Kimzey said. "It has been an incredible ride with my messed-up shoulder, but I'm definitely ready to have it fixed. It will not be too long, and I will back in the arena. "I'm just going to enjoy the time at home right now, especially with my little man (Steele, who is 4½ months) being born this year. This will give me time at home with my wife (Alexis) and son. That will be different, but really good. I'm just really going to enjoy that time and focus on all the good that comes out of this. "It is pretty disappointing (being out for the year), but at the end of the day it is a dangerous sport we play. Everybody knows the dangers are glaring in this sport and I have been really fortunate that I have only had minor bumps and bruises in my professional career. This is just part of it. It will all be there when I come back. It all takes time. I'm just going to trust my surgeons and trust my doctors and I will definitely take my rehab seriously and go from there."

JULY 2022

Five-time PRCA World Champion Stetson Wright will miss the remainder of the Cowboy Christmas run with a wrist injury that required surgery. Wright told ProRodeo.com it's an injury he's been dealing with for a while, but decided it was something that needed to be looked at after his trip to the Greeley (Colo.) Stampede. "It's an injury that's been bothering me for awhile now, I've just kind of rode through it," said Wright, 22. "One of the bones in my (left) wrist had broken off completely and was pressing against a nerve in my hand. I went to the doctor when I got home from Greeley, and they went in and removed the pieces of bone the next day (June 30)." The injury was to Wright's riding hand, but he said he doesn't expect to miss much time. He currently sits first in the PRCA | RAM World Standings in the all-around and bull riding and second in saddle bronc riding. "I will miss the Cowboy Christmas run then come back for everything else hopefully," he said. "I'm planning on being back for Vernal (Utah) on the 9th (of July)."

NRSHA CROWNS SEVEN ALL-AROUND CHAMPIONS

The National Ranch and Stock Horse Alliance crowned seven All Around Champions and 35 Class Champions at their National Championship Show held in conjunction with the AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse World Championship at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma.

In the Open, the seven-time champion did it again, as Ben Baldus of Gainesville, Texas, captured the all-around riding Playin Motown, a 2013 gelding by Mr Playinstylish and out of Mo Flo. Playin Motown was bred by Kit and Charlie Moncrief and Lee Tennison and is owned by Catelyn Walker of Prairie Grove, Arkansas. In addition to the NRSHA All Around, Playin Motown also earned

the VRH Senior World Championship. As Ben spoke about the event he said, “It was fun to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. There’s a lot of growth in the versatility. I was very happy with the course set up. Playin Motown has been in our program for quite a few years now, and it is exciting to go show him; he loves to do his job.” National All-Around Champions were also crowned in six Amateur and Youth divisions. Sara Gugelmeyer of Dalhart, Texas, edged the competition by one point to win the Amateur Division aboard OTP Rio. The 2011 gelding is by One Time Pepto and out of Hickorys Tornado Rio and was bred by Dan Churchill of Moline, Illinois. “I really appreciate NRSHA working hard to get the added money so that it is financially rewarding to do well at the show,” she said. Sara finished the week 1st in cow work, 1st in ranch riding, 2nd in cutting, 5th in trail and 6th in reining to earn $2,641.25. Each national All-Around champion took home a prize package that included a sterling-silver buckle, bronze trophy, champion neck ribbon, specially designed logoed jacket and champion patch, in addition to their share of the purse.

Stallone as “Tulsa King” Premieres Right after Yellowstone Nov. 13 on Paramount+

June 15, 2022 – Paramount+ today released the official teaser trailer for the service’s upcoming original series TULSA KING starring Academy Award® nominee Sylvester Stallone. Creator and Academy Award nominee Taylor Sheridan serves as executive producer alongside Academy Award nominee and Emmy Award® winner Terence Winter (“The Sopranos,” “The Wolf of Wall Street”), who also serves as showrunner and writer. Produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, TULSA KING will premiere with two episodes Sunday, Nov. 13 on Paramount+. TULSA KING follows New York mafia capo Dwight “The General” Manfredi (Stallone), just after he is released from prison after 25 years and unceremoniously exiled by his boss to set up shop in Tulsa, Okla. Realizing that his mob family may not have his best interests in mind, Dwight slowly builds a “crew” from a group of unlikely characters, to help him establish a new criminal empire in a place that to him might as well be another planet. The series also stars Andrea Savage (“I’m Sorry”), Martin Starr (“Silicon Valley”), Max Casella (“The Tender Bar”), Domenick Lombardozzi (“The Irishman”), Vincent Piazza (“Boardwalk Empire”), Jay Will (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), A.C. Peterson (“Superman & Lois”) and

Garrett Hedlund (“The United States vs. Billie Holiday”). The series is executive produced by Sheridan, Winter, Stallone, David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, David Hutkin, Allen Coulter and Braden Aftergood. Mirroring the successful 2021 launches of 1883 and MAYOR OF KINGSTOWN, Paramount Network will air a linear sneak peek of TULSA KING’s debut episode on Nov. 13 as a special simulcast event immediately following the highly anticipated season five premiere of YELLOWSTONE. Similarly, the second episode of TULSA KING will air behind YELLOWSTONE on Nov. 20. All remaining episodes will be available to stream weekly on Sundays, exclusively on Paramount+. TULSA KING will also premiere on Paramount+ in Canada on Nov.13, followed by a premiere in Australia and the U.K. on Nov. 14. The series will air later this year on Paramount+ in Latin America and in additional territories upon the launch of the service. TULSA KING is the latest addition to Sheridan’s growing slate on Paramount+, which includes 1883, MAYOR OF KINGSTOWN and the upcoming series LIONESS, 1883: THE BASS REEVES STORY, LAND MAN and 1932 (WT).

Yellowstone Spinoff 1883 to Continue Via Bass Reeves Story at Paramount+ The streamer announced Wednesday that its previously ordered Bass Reeves miniseries will in fact be an 1883 offshoot, officially titled 1883: The Bass Reeves Story. The limited-run project will star Golden Globe nominee David Oyelowo (Selma) as Reeves, a legendary lawman of the Wild West. “Known as the greatest frontier hero in American history, and also believed to be the inspiration for The Lone Ranger, Reeves worked in the post-Reconstruction era as a federal peace officer in the Indian Territory, capturing over 3,000 of the most dangerous criminals without ever being wounded,” the logline describes.

“I created this peek through time to show you this one specific journey,” Sheridan told Deadline at the time, regarding 1883‘s future. “I’m not someone who likes to tie everything up in a bow and explain how everyone lived happily ever after, or didn’t… for me, as a storyteller it feels close-ended. I’m going to peek through the window of a different era and see what I see then.”

Back in February, Paramount+ shared that “the next chapter” of 1883 — which is itself a spinoff of Paramount Network’s wildly successful Yellowstone — would premiere later in 2022, though it wasn’t clear at the time what David the narrative focus of those episodes would be; Wednesday’s Bass Reeves announcement appears to offer some clarity. 98

As for the original 1883, which counted Sam Elliott, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw among its stars, series creator Taylor Sheridan revealed in February that the show was only envisioned as a oneseason drama. Despite Bass Reeves‘ status as an 1883 spinoff, there are still no plans for the mothership to return.

Speaking of different eras, the Yellowstone universe will continue expanding via the prequel series 1932, starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. Per the official description, the show will “explore the early 20th century when Oyelowo pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition and the Great Depression all plague the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home.”

AQHA and APHA Match Stride in New Collaboration

For the first time in equine breed association history, the American Quarter Horse and American Paint Horse associations are partnering in a two-year strategic alliance. This collaboration of resources and expertise, which will touch animal welfare, youth development, data sharing, promotional activities and events, will help brighten the

future of the equine community and heighten the value of riding and competing with AQHA- and APHA-registered horses. With the help of visionary elected leadership from both associations, horse enthusiasts from around the globe will be the beneficiaries of this alliance for years to come. “This agreement opens the doors for both associations to work together in areas of mutual

benefit,” said Melanie CoxDayhuff, APHA president. “It’s an exciting time when two, like-minded, strong equine associations can partner for the benefit of our industry, our members and our horses,” said Dr. Scott Myers, AQHA president. The partnership will focus on:Animal welfare, Youth development, Data collaboration to enhance horse

records for owners Cross-promotional opportunities, Event collaboration. “Each organization has strengths that complement the other,” said Billy Smith, APHA executive director. “This partnership reaffirms our longstanding history of reciprocity in disciplinary proceedings and sets parameters for data sharing between the world’s two largest equine breed registries, while opening new opportunities that will benefit stock-horse enthusiasts overall.” “The American Quarter Horse industry is in growth mode, as seen through yearover-year increases in AQHA memberships, registrations and transfers, and this alliance is an opportunity to work with a fellow industry leader to continue those efforts to grow not only AQHA, but the equine industry as a whole,” said Karl Stressman, AQHA chief executive officer. “AQHA’s mission includes preserving the pedigree of the American Quarter Horse while maintaining the integrity of the breed and welfare of its horses. This alliance will support those efforts, while also providing value through educational opportunities, event collaboration, promotional activities and more!” Upcoming Event Collaboration - The American Quarter Horse Youth Association (AQHYA) invites American Junior Paint Horse Association (AjPHA) leadership to participate in the 2022 AQHYA Youth Excellence Seminar, slated for July 12-14 in Amarillo. Additionally, AQHYA members will have opportunities to participate at AjPHA events and activities in 2022. AQHA will also sponsor portions of APHA’s successful Cowgirl Gathering, which is rapidly becoming a premier location for the world’s greatest cowgirls to assemble, compete and talk about the future of cowgirl events.

Bruce joined the Girls Rodeo Association (GRA) now the Women's Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) in 1960 reaching the pinnacle of the sport in 1964 when she won the world title aboard a horse known as Red, registered as Shaws Kingwood Snip. That same year, Red was the AQHA Reserve World Champion Barrel Horse and in 1965 was the first GRA/WPRA barrel horse to ever be featured in color on the cover of the Quarter Horse Journal. Bruce and Red were the first WPRA World Champion duo to go to the left barrel first. They had been hitting some barrels, so Bruce decided to change things up and go to the left. From then on, if a set-up was JULY 2022

better for the left, she would run Red left. If not, they went to the right. She landed among the Top 15 in the world standings seven consecutive years from 1963-69. Red loved running close to home – he won the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo in Bruce's hometown of Colorado Springs six times. She was inducted into the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo Hall of Fame in 1997. Bruce, who was born July 22, 1931, in Clay Center, Kan., was among the early GRA members to conduct barrel racing clinics and often traveled to Hawaii to conduct them. In addition to barrel racing, she spent a great deal of time on the racetrack and became the first female licensed outrider in the State of Colorado. She gave back and remained loyal to the association for decades even after retiring from full-time competition. When the WPRA's headquarters moved to Colorado Springs, Bruce helped get things up and running. Her dedication and loyalty to the WPRA carried over to the next generation with her granddaughter, Amber Bruce West, serving a term on the WPRA Board of Directors. As well as her horses, family, and animals Bruce loved her garden and flowers and was an amazing cook.
