EPIX Original new series Billy The Kid, written by Vikings and The Tudors creator Michael Hirst and starring British actor Tom Blyth (The Gilded Age, Benediction) and Daniel Webber (The Dirt, Escape From Pretoria).

The eight-episode season comprised of hour-long episodes is an epic romantic adventure based on the life of famous American outlaw Billy the Kid (Blyth), also known as William H. Bonney — from his humble Irish roots, to his early days as a cowboy and gunslinger in the American frontier, to his pivotal role in the Lincoln County War and beyond. Webber will play Jesse Evans, another famous outlaw and leader of the Seven Rivers Gang. When they meet, Jesse has already embraced a life of crime: robbing stores and cattle rustling. Billy is attracted to his wild and reckless character and becomes Billy’s doppelganger of sorts — his shadow self, forever inviting him over to the dark side of life. Billy the Kid is executive produced by Michael Hirst; Donald De Line for De Line Pictures; Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey for Amblin Television; Otto Bathurst, and Toby Leslie for One Big Picture. Billy the Kid is a co-production between EPIX Studios and MGM International Television Productions, in association with Nordic Entertainment Groups streaming service Viaplay. Billy the Kid marks the seventh greenlit project for the recently launched MGM International Television Productions label and the second co-production with EPIX following the contemporary sci-fi horror series From. The series will be internationally distributed by MGM. INSP Hosts 3rd Season of

ULTIMATE COWBOY SHOWDOWN The Cowboy Competition Series, Hosted by Country Music Icon Trace Adkins, Returns for 2022

General Entertainment network INSP, the premiere destination for viewers who love Western and Western adjacent programming, revealed today that the 3rd season of Ultimate Cowboy Showdown will debut in April. Country music icon Trace Adkins will return as host. The announcement was made by Doug Butts, EVP of Programming for INSP.

“This original series has become a true fan favorite with the INSP audience,” said Butts. “With each new season viewers become more invested in the cowboy contestants as they root for their success, or departure. In season 3 the level of talent and drama has become more intense, the challenges more rigorous, and the atmosphere much more competitive. With 14 seasoned cowboys vying for a life-changing prize, no one is shy about doing whatever it takes to come out on top! In addition, this season features a new formidable opponent…Mother Nature. Filmed in beautiful, but cold and windy Douglas, Wyoming, the weather conditions proved harsh and unrelenting, and added a whole new dimension

to the challenges in each episode. We are confident our viewers will love the increased intensity of this season’s competition!” In Ultimate Cowboy Showdown, top cowboys from across the United States compete to win a herd of cattle (worth at least $50,000), a coveted belt buckle and a lifetime of bragging rights. As they lock horns in a series of grueling challenges, they are judged on their skills, knowledge, grit, and passion. The diverse male and female contestants include ranch owners and managers, horse trainers, ranch hands, bull riders, and rodeo competitors. One-by-one cowboys who don’t perform are eliminated by country music icon Trace Adkins and a panel of expert judges, and in the end, only one cowboy rides away with the herd. No season of Ultimate Cowboy Showdown would be complete without revered host Trace Adkins, who also serves as Executive Producer of the show. He had this to say: “With each new season of Ultimate Cowboy Showdown, I marvel at the level of talent in the contestants. I get to see some of the best cattlemen and ranchers from across the country, men and women who make their living off the land. They make my job pretty tough throughout the competition – I never want to send anyone home; but, when they aren’t on their game, I have no problem telling them to ‘hit the trail.’ I’m honored to judge this season’s competition, and I look forward to seeing who takes home the cattle, the buckle, and the bragging rights!”

Taylor Sheridan

A Mosquito Coast reunion between Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren is buzzing over at Paramount+, as both stars have joined the upcoming Yellowstone prequel series 1932. The streaming service announced Tuesday that the Hollywood legends will lead Academy Award nominee Taylor Sheridan's new series, which is set to premiere digitally in December. Following the success of the first Yellowstone origin series 1883, which became the most-watched Paramount+ original series, 1932 will "introduce a new generation of the Dutton family and explore the early twentieth century when pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition, and the Great Depression all plague the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home," according to an official synopsis. Kevin Costner and Kelly Reilly originated the Yellowstone franchise, with Tim McGraw and Faith Hill taking lead roles in the 1883 origin odyssey about the Dutton family seeking a new life through the Great Plains on the way to Montana. On the Paramount Network, Yellowstone launched a record-breaking season 4 run that drew an average of 11 million total viewers. The series was recently renewed for a fifth season. In addition to their upcoming roles in 1932, Ford and Mirren previously starred together in the 1986 film The Mosquito Coast, based on Paul Theroux's novel about a man who moves his family to a central American jungle to begin a new utopian life. The book was later adapted into a streaming series by Apple TV+ starring Justin Theroux and Melissa George. JUNE 2022

By Canden Scales Matt Mills is someone people have become familiar with all across the horse world from Western to English. He has brought a countless number of people into reining from across the globe because of his far outreach and highly effective online videos. I am honored that I got to interview Matt after his epic ride on Guns & Dynamite. The two won the $25k Open Shootout at the National Reining Breeders Classic. The following tells of how his passion was ignited for reining, his ideology of coaching and training, and the current meteoric path he is on.

MATT MILLS INTERVIEW

FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS Matt Mills grew up in Long Beach, CA.. His mom quickly realized how much he loved horses after taking him to a local pony ride and immediately signed Matt up to take riding lessons shortly after. “I guess horses were just always in my blood from the very beginning.” Matt said. By the time Matt was 14 years old he began to give basic riding lessons. He learned early on that he really enjoyed helping others ride. His main focus growing up was to show horses and be competitive at it. Soon he was giving clinics around the world to teach people about reining horses. Matt stated that its not easy to be a clinician and a competitive horse trainer, because there is a lot of time management needed to do both. In 2014 a friend mentioned to Matt that he should try to do some online coaching videos. Matt quickly noticed that this approach was even better than the way he had been doing it in the past, because he could reach more people and it was more easily accessible. “I remember when I was growing up, as a kid, I would try to find every horse book and video out there about training horses… and it was actually hard to find that kind of knowledge because the books didn’t always have the answers to what I wanted to know. So it became a passion of mine to find that information and share it with the rest of the world.” Matt said. “Plus it feels great to be able to give back to this sport that I love.” 38

THE MOVE TO TEXAS After living in Arizona for 25 years, where he’s held his business training horses, Matt decided to move to Texas after the 2021 NRHA futurity in December. According to Matt this happened because of a couple different factors. Over the years, long before ‘Yellowstone,’ Matt became really good friends with Taylor Sheridan. Taylor flirted with Matt over the years about the idea of moving to Arizona, but ultimately he moved to Texas, Matt stated. “Then one day I get this phone call from Taylor and he says ‘Hey looks like you’re going to be a Texan.’ At the time I had no idea what he was talking about so I just said, okay? Taylor went on to say ‘Yeah I’m with the Ruckmans right now and they’re putting in an offer on a house out here.’ Thats when I realized okay this just got real.” Matt said. Matts first show since moving to Texas was held in Jacksonville, Florida. Where he was 3rd in the L4 open Derby on Wimpys All In and ended up 6th in the L4 open derby on Americas Gunslinger! Matt also took home the Level 3 win on Wimpys All In, 2nd on Stopping In Jersey and 3rd on Americas JUNE 2022

Photos: Waltenberry, Chelsea Schneider Media, Jack Schatzberg & Karen Mills”

Matt & Karen Mills, the Elite Equine Salt Spa Crew with MaryBeth & Tim Ruckman Gunslinger! It was a fantastic start to life in Texas! Unfortunately Cactus Classic wasn’t so good. “I was having some awesome rides on my horses and then had a few slight bobbles that kept me from qualifying for The Run For A Million.” Matt said.

MENTAL GAME Thats when my next question to Matt became: How do you overcome something like that mentally where you have great runs and then not so great runs and then turn around to mark the highest score of the entire 2022 NRBC? Matts answer: “If you take those three shows it shows you a perfect example of what its like, mentally, you have to have a short memory. You can’t get too down on yourself or too high on yourself either. You have to go into each day as a new day and focus on what you have at that moment. So having control over your mental game is HUGE! I try to keep myself centered on the ‘now’ moments. Being a horse trainer you have to forget what happened 5 minutes ago, good or bad, and just focus on the horse you are on now and try to do the very best job you can.”

GUNS AND DYNAMITE

mentioned he was for sale… I thought hmmm… this could be the one.” Matt said “I remember the first time I saw that At the time they left the idea alone and horse was when we were filming season waited until NRBC, thats when Matt and the 4 of Yellowstone. Cade McCutcheon had Ruckmans saw Kirstin Booth show Gooder him there and that horse was just incredible in the non-pro derby. Matt thought ‘wow, stopping! He was unbelievable because this horse is phenomenal’ he was so athletic! We all just watched him The Ruckmans said to Matt, “Just try the that day in awe because he was freaky horse, see if you like him, yeah its only a year but it could be one hell of a year an a half.” Soon as Matt tried ‘Gooder’ it felt like a perfectly fit glove. “He’s so powerful, but yet laid back. He can handle speed and doesn’t get worried about it. It was an awesome feeling!” Matt said. Kirstins only stipulation was, “I don’t want you to buy him, unless you 100% believe in this horse, like I do. He deserves to have someone who truly believes in him. If you believe in him, he will do great Kirstin Booth & “Gooder” cool! So when Kirstin Booth things for you and he will called me up to ask about another horse I give you his heart.” had… I asked her about her stud and she JUNE 2022

From what Matt felt when he tried the horse he absolutely believed in him and his ability. Matt told me during our interview that he was one of the best horses he has swung a leg over. So it wasn’t to anyones surprise that Matt decided to purchase the horse from Kirstin Booth who had owned Gooder since he was a yearling. As Matt continued to ride Gooder a couple more times at the show he kept thinking to himself ‘Gosh, I wish I was showing this horse here, at this show, right now!’ Thats when they decided to enter him into the $25k OPEN SHOOTOUT. The next big hurdle came into play when Matt realized he now had 3 horses entered in the shootout! With only 9 horses entered in the class (where they were expecting at least 15 to 20), he needed help getting the horses prepared! His first help came from Jason Vanlandingham, who they had previously purchased Stopping In Jersey from last September. Matt asked Jason if he could do him a favor and warm that horse up for him. Jason, without any hesitation, immediately said, “Yes.” Now the challenge was to get Gooder taken care of… naturally Matt decided to ask Shawn Flarida who Gooder was in training with just before they purchased him. “Hey Shawn, I’m going to show Gooder tomorrow.” Matt said. Shawn looked at Matt and smiled and said, “Great! I’ll be cheering for you.” “Well, I probably need you to warm him up for me.” Matt said. Shawn started laughing and said, “Well, if you asked me to, I would do it.” At this point Matt looked at Shawn a bit more seriously and said, “Okay, I’m asking you.” Both Jason and Shawn said yes, even though they were both getting ready to show in the L4 Open Derby Finals. Both of these riders exhibited the utmost sportsmanship and teamwork! “Just so you know if this goes right, I’ll give you some credit, but if this goes wrong I am 100% blaming you.” Matt said. All three guys laughed about it, being over qualified warm up jockeys (all three of them being Million Dollar + riders). At the end of the day its about having fun and enjoying what you do. “I remember Jason texted me later and said, ‘Guess I’m fired as your warm up jockey,’ because I didn’t do as well on the horse he warmed up for me. It was pretty funny.” Matt said. Matt was still leading the $25k Open Shootout on his first horse in the draw RFR Voodoos Fuego (Shiners Voodoo Dr x Show N Tag) also owned by the Ruckmans with a score of 223. Just moments before Matt goes in to show Gooder… Cade McCutcheon walks into the pen as draw #8 on Modern Gun (Gunners Special Nite x Taris Modern). At this point it now became a Gunners Special Nite showdown with his two highest money earning offspring (#1 money earner Modern Gun and

MATT MILLS

40

#2 highest money earner being Guns & Dynamite) competing for the win. They were the last two horses of the class to show. Cade marks a big 227.5 on Modern Gun! The arena is electric! As the two make their way out of the arena, people begin to get up to walk out with them, thinking they just saw the winning ride of the night. That was until Matt Mills came flying through the gates on Gooder laying down a dynamite run in stop, +1. They have recaptured everyones attention. People begin returning back to their seats and start pulling out their phones. Matt waited patiently in the middle and then quietly asked Gooder to spin, it was lightning fast and his cadence was impeccable, the judges score +1 1/2! “This was only my 4th time ever riding Gooder.” Matt said “I turned him around just before I went into show and Shawn said to me‘Hey, you’ve got another gear there, if you do this one little thing, trust me he’s gonna fly!’ It was one of those things where you look at your fellow competitor and you think ‘hmmm, I don’t know, but I trusted him because he’s a good guy and he was here to help me. Man did that horse respond! That was the best run in stop and set of spins I’ve ever done! I know I have scored higher than that one other time in my life, but it was a long time ago and if you compare the runs now, THIS was the better run! It was the most electrifying run I’ve ever had.” Matt said of his run on Gooder. “I remember sitting there in the middle after the spins and thinking holy $#it that was fast! Honestly at that very moment I am thinking I gotta thank Shawn! Then I think okay I’ve gotta keep myself in check and not try to hard. Thats the great thing about Gooder he is so talented that you don’t really have to ask him for max effort, he’s just giving you so much try. I actually feel like he could spin even faster and stop even bigger than what we did there!” Matt said. Which is pretty phenomenal to think of since the pair marked a huge 229. After the run, Matt, his wife Karen and (the new owners) Tim and MaryBeth Ruckman all went to celebrate Gooder at the Elite Equine Spa. Matt finished the 2022 NRBC as being the highest score of the entire show on Guns And Dynamite (Gunners Special Nite x Chic Olena Starbuck). With only the 4th ride ever on Gooder, Matt also made this the highest score the horse has ever marked. It looks like a promising future ahead for these two. “I just have to thank all of the people who had part of this horses training: Kirstin Booth, Joe Schmidt, Cade McCutcheon and Shawn Flarida, Those people all did a phenomenal job with him. A special thanks to Shawn for warming him up for me. Gooder was ready to rock and roll… But I have to say even then, sometimes you can have an all star team and it still doesn’t work out in the show pen, this is obviously a GREAT horse! Gooder and I just really seem to click!” Matt said. NEXT UP… THE NRHA DERBY!

The Run for a Million Draws Cowboys to Las Vegas During Inaugural $25,000 Cowboy Invitational Presented by XIT Ranch

The Run For A Million (TRFAM) may be reining’s richest event, but after the success of last year’s $150,000 Cow Horse Challenge, held during TRFAM, it’s clear fans want to see even more of the Western way of life. This year, TRFAM will host the $25,000 Cowboy Invitational, allowing cowboys from some of the country’s most historic ranches to show off their horsemanship skills. Eleven ranches have been invited to each send a cowboy to compete in the Cowboy Invitational. Some of the ranches chosen are American Quarter Horse Association Best Remuda Award winners, meaning they not only have significant livestock operations, but also prominent horse breeding programs. Many of the ranches are also involved in National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) competition. “Last year was a great test to see how the cow horse would complement The Run For A Million event, and I think it proved to be a real fan favorite,” said Anna Morrison, Executive Director of the NRCHA. “To add on the Cowboy Invitational, which highlights how connected cow horse is to training traditions that are so important for ranch work and ranch life, is incredibly meaningful.” The Cowboy Invitational will follow the NRCHA’s cowboy class format, designed for working ranch cowboys that are wanting to venture into the competitive arena. Competitors will complete a reining and cow work run, then return to the arena for a modified steer stopping run. Thanks to inaugural sponsor XIT Ranch, these competitors will have a chance at $25,000 in prize money. With its long history rooted in ranching and the Western lifestyle, XIT Ranch’s owner Drew Knowles stepped up to sponsor what he thought was a good fit for their operation. 44

“When I was looking at [the cowboy invitational] this year, I noticed there wasn’t any money allocated for the cowboys, so I called up Taylor [Sheridan, producer] and said, ‘We’d love to give the cowboys something to compete for,’” Knowles said. “For us, with the preservation of the American cowboy and the traditions and horsemanship, it’s really a natural extension of what we believe in and what we’re all about.” Founded in 1885 in the Texas Panhandle, the XIT Ranch at its peak spanned over three million acres and was once considered the largest cattle ranch in the world. Knowles, who is the third-great-grandson of one of its original owners, operates the current XIT Ranch out of La Veta, Colorado. The ranch is involved in the NRCHA as owners, breeders and sponsors. “For The Run For A Million to have reining and cow horse, and now the Cowboy Invitational, it just speaks volumes to the resurgence in the Western way of life and the global interest of Western sports,” Knowles added. “I think that in this day and age, there’s a rekindling of the romantic idea of the Western way of life. To add in the heritage ranches, which are the epitome of the Western way of life, is just the perfect way for The Run For A Million to further develop as an event.” The 11 invited ranches are: 6666 Ranch (Guthrie, TX), Bogle Ltd. (Dexter, NM), King Ranch (Kingsville, TX), Pitchfork Land & Cattle Company (Guthrie, TX), R.A. Brown Ranch (Throckmorton, TX), San Lucas Ranch (Santa Ynez, CA), Singleton Ranches (Lamy, NM), Stuart Ranch (Caddo, OK), Tongue River Ranch (Dumont, TX), Waggoner Ranch (Vernon, TX), Wagonhound Land & Livestock (Douglas, WY) The 2022 TRFAM will be held Aug. 17-20 at the South Point Arena in Las Vegas. Prior to the competition, the Cowboy Invitational ranches will be invited to participate in a cowboy clinic at the 6666 Ranch in June to help their cowboys get ready for the big stage in Las Vegas. To find TRFAM’s schedule or purchase tickets, go to www.trfam.com. For more information about XIT Ranch, visit their website. Rodeo Historical Society Announces 2022 Award Honorees and Nominees

The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum and Rodeo Historical Society are pleased to announce the 2022 Tad Lucas Memorial Award, Ben Johnson Memorial Award and Director’s Choice Award honorees, as well as the 2022 nominees for induction into the Rodeo Hall of Fame. The Tad Lucas Memorial Award honoree of 2022 is Martha Josey. Each year, the family of trick-riding legend Tad Lucas bestows this award upon a living female whose actions promote the values represented by Tad Lucas. The 2022 Ben Johnson Memorial Award honoree is Chuck Sylvester. This award winner is chosen by the Rodeo Committee and honors a living individual who represents the Western lifestyle as exemplified by screen and rodeo legend Ben Johnson. Sylvester was made aware of his receiving this award by Jeff Ewing, Chief Development Officer, during a special announcement at the National Western Stock Show Annual Member Meeting held in Denver, Colorado, May 12. Jeff Medders will also be given the Rodeo Hall of Fame Director’s Choice Award. Not an annual honor, this award is chosen by the RHS board in exceptional circumstances. Rodeo Hall of Fame inductees and award honorees are recognized each fall during Rodeo Hall of Fame Weekend, which includes an Induction Ceremony and Champions’ Dinner as well as an Inductee Panel Discussion, the Rope ‘N’ Ride Cocktail Reception, live and silent auctions to benefit RHS and other festivities. The 2022 Rodeo Hall of Fame Weekend will take place November 11 and 12 at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. RHS members receive voting privileges to select Rodeo Hall of Fame inductees, among other benefits. Voting begins in June, and members must join RHS no later than June 30, 2022 to be eligible to vote. RHS members will receive ballots in the mail, and ballots must be returned to the Museum postmarked by August 1, 2022. The Rodeo Hall of Fame Class of 2022 nominees in both the Living and Deceased categories includes: LIVING: Guy Allen, Jerry Beagley, LaTonne Sewalt Enright, Gary Gist, Cleo L. Hearn, Joyce Kernek, Bill Nelson, Tommy Puryear, Tom Reeves Johnnie Ray “Jon” Taylore, Tee Woolman, The Kirby Brothers (Butch, Kaye and Sandy, all nominated together) DECEASED: Ben Bates, Jake Beutler, Thelma Warner Cody, Don Endsley. About 2022 Tad Lucas Memorial Award honoree Martha Josey. Martha Josey’s rodeo career began when she purchased a horse, CeBe Reed, from her family friend with $2500 she borrowed from 46

her mother in 1964. The pair went on to win 52 barrel races in a row, seven horse trailers, four Texas barrel racing championships, won 30 of 34 AQHA shows and qualified for the 1968 and 1969 NFRs. She and her next horse, Sonny Bit O’Both were also champions, with Sonny being the only horse in history to win both AQHA and WPRA World Championships in the same year. Martha was chosen to represent the United States in the 1988 Calgary Olympics. Martha and her subsequent horses continued to win championships through 2005, while she personally overcame hardships and obstacles including a potentially paralizing injury. After her nearly 50 year rodeo career, Martha is considered to be one of the most accomplished barrel races worldwide by many. Martha also impacted the lives of many by lending her skills to training young barrel racers. About 2022 Ben Johnson Memorial Award honoree Chuck Sylvester Chuck Sylvester was born in La Salle, Colorado on a farm he continues to work to this day. He showed his first steer at the age of 15 at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. He became a member of the Rodeo Club while attending what is now Colorado State University, and participated in the Little National Western and Skyline Stampede Rodeo. Following CSU, he was a member of the Colorado Fair leadership team. After that he went into ranching and became the Manager of the National Western Yards operation from 1976-1978. His excellent work opened the role of General Manager of the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo, a position he held for 25 years until 2013. During his tenure, he was responsible for managing the rodeo, stock show and horse show. Under his leadership, attendance tripled and the National Western Rodeo was honored as the best Indoor Rodeo of the Year in 2000 and 2001. He was also responsible for organizing the Draft Horse Show and Pull and developing the Dancing Horses Event in the horse show, as well facilitating BEN JOHNSON school tours and supporting youth programs. About 2022 Director’s Choice Award honoree Jeff Medders Jeff Medders has spent the last two and a half decades hosting sports programming for a who’s who of networks. He has been the television host of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo since 1991. His passion for the “cowboy life” is a big reason why he has become synonymous with groups like the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, American Quarter Horse Association, National High School Rodeo Association and Championship Bull Riding.

AQHA Youth World Championships by Horse AQHA has always tracked the number of world championships by horse for the AQHA World Championship Show Program, but now that we’re celebrating the 50th anniversary of the AQHYA World Championship Show, it’s time to look at the horses who’ve won the most youth world titles. These statistics are for Level 3 world championships earned throughout the 50 years of the AQHYA World. Many of these horses also had successful open and amateur careers before, during or after their youth careers. Leading with nine youth world titles, Bowmans Dry Mate was piloted to these awards by brothers Josh and Bryce Briggs. "Bobo" also had two youth reserve world championships in breakaway roping and one in heeling, and was the 2010 reserve world champion in senior heeling with AQHA Professional Horseman C. R. Bradley. The 1999 palomino gelding by Smart Mate and out of Dry Fancy by Dry Doc earned 222 open and 85.5 youth performance points in his career. The now-23-year-old gelding was bred by Roland Bowman of Wynnewood, Oklahoma, and is still owned by Bryce Briggs of Pilot Point, Texas. Bobo is semi-retired, Bryce reports, but still gets ridden a couple times a week and also packs beginning riders around for riding lessons.

INTERVIEW NRCHA Executive Director Anna Morrison

Q-Teton Ridge has become a major supporter of NRCHA events. What

By Tracy Wager

Q-This will be the third-year of the DT Western Derby in

Scottsdale. How has moving to WestWorld effected the event? A - Moving this event to WestWorld has given it the opportunity to grow exponentially. The facility is fantastic, with plenty of arena space for both competition and practice. Knowing they have the opportunity to prepare their horses well and show in good arenas makes a huge difference for our exhibitors. This is a big contributor to the more than 15% growth we’ve seen at this event in 2021 and again in 2022.

Q-Are you satisfied with the air-conditioning? A-It’s wonderful to be able to show in a fully air-conditioned space, as

well as have the room for warm up inside as the outdoor temperatures rise throughout the day.

Q-What can folks expect to see if they attend this year’s event? A-In 2022 we’ll once again be featuring the CD Survivor Memorial Open

Bridle Spectacular, as well and the Open and Non-Pro Super Spectacular, all supported by Holy Cow Performance Horses. This Friday, June 10 event will feature the crowd-favorite muley roping/steer stopping that we kicked off in 2021. On the same night we’ll also be featuring the second of the two qualifiers for The Run For A Million Cow Horse Challenge, where our top riders and bridle horses will be vying for 8 remaining spots for the Las Vegas event. This is a great opportunity to see the best in the sport, and even some of the riders that have been featured on Taylor Sheridan’s program Yellowstone. And of course, the titular event of the DT Horses Western Derby features cow horse’s top 4- and 5-year-olds competing for the Championship. We have our biggest ever field of Derby horses this year, and will be crowning the NonPro and Open division winners on the last night of the event – Saturday, June 11.

Q-How has the exposure on Yellowstone effected the NRCHA? A-Taylor Sheridan has given the western performance industry a huge gift by

highlighting our sports on Yellowstone, and we’re so grateful for the interest and excitement it has generated in people who hadn’t been exposed to cattle and horses before. We’re excited to welcome these new fans to the cow horse family, and will be continuing to make it easy for people to learn more about what we do and how they can get involved through our Back Gate Pass and Free Ride memberships available at NRCHA.com.

Q-The interest in the World’s Greatest Horseman event keeps growing. A-What are the prospects for future growth?

We’ve all at some time wondered what the maximum potential is for the World’s Greatest Horseman. It’s a huge accomplishment for a rider to train a finished bridle horse, and an even bigger challenge to train a competitive four-event bridle horse like we see in the World’s Greatest Horseman. The incredible support of our past event partners like DT Horses and current event partners Western Bloodstock, Hashtags and BDB Breeders has helped to grow the purse, and we’re rewarding our competitors in a bigger way than we ever have before. The winner’s check has gone from $50,000 in 2021 to $100,000 in 2022, and the winner will take home $150,000 in 2023. On top of this, events like The Run For A Million have helped draw out more bridle horses. This past year we had our largest ever field of World’s Greatest Horseman competitors with 67 entries, and a 5,100+ sell-out crowd in the Will Rogers Coliseum for the finals. I expect we’ll easily top those numbers in 2023! 54

JUNE 2022

is their impact on the events? A-NRCHA is fortunate to have an incredibly supportive family of sponsors, and we were excited to welcome Teton Ridge to those ranks this past year. Teton Ridge has come on as the title sponsor of the Teton Ridge Stallion Stakes, held in Las Vegas, and they’ve proven to be wonderful partners and collaborators. They bring innovative and exciting ideas to the table, and have a genuine interest in growing western sports and supporting their health and sustainability. This was evident at The American, where the Teton Ridge team pushed the creative boundaries to deliver an exciting and beautifully produced event.

Q-Do you see their playing a larger role in the future? A-I do expect the impact of Teton Ridge’s broad-reaching support of the western industry to grow. We’re eager to see the big ideas that Teton Ridge has for the western sports industry, and I believe they are just getting started.

Q-Cow Horse will be featured at the Run for a Million this August in

Las Vegas. How did that come about? A-This will actually be the second year that cow horse has been included at The Run For A Million, and we are there both because Taylor Sheridan is an outstanding partner to the sport and because cow horse is simply a whole lot of fun to watch. Taylor is another partner who brings big ideas to the table, and his The Run For A Million took the industry by storm in 2019 when it sold out the South Point arena and had fans standing in huge lines to get their chance to meet reining’s biggest stars. When Taylor invited NRCHA to be a part of the event in 2021 we were thrilled and eager to support his vision for featuring our top riders and bridle horses. The audience responded very well to the Friday night cow horse event, and Taylor doubled down to bring the Cow Horse Challenge back in 2022 as well as the Cowboy Invitational which will feature cowboys from some of the nation’s top ranches competing in cow horse for a $25,000 purse.

Q-The qualifier classes for The Run for A Million Event have had

huge entries and there are only 8 more slots available. The last qualifier is the DT Western Derby in June. How has this effected NRCHA and the sport? A-The first qualifier was held at the Teton Ridge Stallion Stakes in March, and 83 horses were entered up for a shot at 8 spots. It was beyond exciting to see that number of outstanding bridle horses in the arena. The bridle horse is the ultimate goal of reined cow horse – to take a horse through all phases of training until you’ve developed the ultimate performance horse. Events like The Run For A Million qualifiers add to events like World’s Greatest Horseman and the Holy Cow Performance Horse-supported Bridle Horse Spectaculars to create more incentive and more opportunity for those trainers who take a horse all the way through to the bridle. That is incredibly rewarding.

Q-With a year under your belt as the NRCHA’s Executive Director.

How have the last twelve months evolved with your leadership? A-I had the very good fortune to take over the helm of a ship that was already pointed in the right direction. Our membership continues to grow. Our events grow by 10, 20, and 30%. Our horses and riders are getting the opportunity to be featured on bigger stages. Our events are being watched and attended by more fans. This can’t be manufactured. This is the result of an organization made of good and welcoming people, the most incredible horses,

and the absolute most exciting sport to watch. The best thing I ever did was decide to be a part of cow horse, and I feel lucky every day.

Taylor Santos Nails Down Top Steer Roping Run

By TANNER BARTH, PRCA Media Coordinator

Taylor Santos had a memorable 2021 ProRodeo season, which ended in him qualifying for both the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in tie-down roping and the National Finals Steer Roping. He hopes 2022 will bring a similar result and his quest to do that is off to a good start. Santos posted the fastest steer roping time of the week (May 16-22) with a blistering 8.5-second run at the Liberty Hill (Texas) Fair and Rodeo to take home the round win. "I didn't do great on my first two steers there, but I had a really good steer drawn in the third round," said Santos, 27. "The rounds were pretty fast over there, so I kind of just freestyled it and tried to go as fast as I could." As of May 23, Santos is sitting 12th in the steer roping PRCA | RAM World Standings and 21st in the tie-down roping. He said while he has both horses in the trailer most of time it can make for an interesting dilemma when it comes to planning for the season. "Last year I wasn't really planning on roping calves much, I was primarily going to do steer roping," he said. "But in the end, I made it to the Finals in both events. "It's definitely a tricky process because not all the rodeos have

56

steer roping. I used to think entering was hard when I just roped calves, but now trying to do both events can get a little interesting." Now, with the summer run on the horizon Santos has his eyes on once again returning to Las Vegas and Mulvane, Kan. this season. He knows it's a daunting task but feels like he's in a good position to accomplish the impressive feat again in 2022. "The last few weeks have been huge for me to get into the position I'm in," he said. "Now, that I'm in the Top 15 in the steer roping I can maybe skip maybe one or two steer roping's here or there and go to another couple more tie-down roping events. So, it's going to week-by-week deal for me the rest of the season." Below are the other top times and rides for the week of May 16-22.Tanner Aus had the highest scored bareback ride of the week. He had a 90-point ride on Vold Rodeo's Painted Playgirl at The End of the Trail Western Festival in Ogallala, Neb., May 20, Skyler Woolls clocked the fastest steer wrestling time of the week. He stopped the clock in 3.4 seconds at Rodeo Killeen (Texas), May 21. The team roping duo of Zach Kilgus and Jake Edwards had the quickest time in their event this past week. The team had a 4.1-second run at the Rowel Ranch Rodeo in Hayward, Calif., May 22.

A gift horse indeed: Equestrian vaulting opens doors for children with disabilities

By Mary Grace Grabill/ Cronkite News

The first time Jarred Sallus tried equestrian vaulting, he was with his girlfriend, Kadriya Musina, in her native Russia. Within eight hours of his arrival, he was upside down on a horse.

Sallus returned to the stables the next day, ready to learn more about the sport. His excitement led to the couple in 2019 co-founding Salt River Vaulters, a nonprofit organization that makes it possible for children or adults with disabilities to participate in

equine therapy and therapeutic vaulting. Sallus, whose early life struggles with behavioral issues saw him sent to boarding school in Sedona, soon found that horses were an avenue that could lead toward a peaceful, more

Following boarding school, Sallus moved back to California, starting his journey with Luna, a horse that is now used at Salt River Vaulters. “I’ve seen how it helps me and I can see sometimes how it helps students that we have. ASPCA supports ban of horse slaughter in legislative hearing The ASPCA showed their support in federal legislation that would permanently ban horse slaughter in the US

On May 26, 2022, the US House Subcommittee held a legislative hearing and on the agenda were 2 critical equine protection bills. The first, Save America's Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act, is federal legislation that would permanently ban horse slaughter in the United States and end the export of American horses for slaughter abroad.1 The second, Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act, would end the cruel practice of horse soring where chemicals and devices are used to inflict pain on show horses to force an exaggerated, high-stepping gait often referred to as the “Big Lick.”1 The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) stood before the Subcommittee and testified in support of these bills. 92

A horse swam in Lake Havasu for an hour and a half before help arrived and managed to get it to shore. The horse was exhausted — but uninjured — by the time Mohave County Sheriff’s Office deputies forced it back to shore with a patrol boat, according to a Facebook post. Lake Havasu

is on the Arizona-California border, about 150 miles south of Las Vegas. Something spooked the horse and it ran into the lake on Thursday. The person who called for assistance said they couldn’t coax their horse back to shore. They were worried the horse would drown. The horse has gone several hundred

“Upon deputies’ arrival, they were able to wrangle the horse with their patrol boat, and force it back to shore,” according to the post. More than 175 people had commented on the post as of Monday at noon.

As a founding member of the Cowboy Gathering, Red believes in the importance of the Cowboy Gathering and what it does to honor the Western way of life. “Cowboys and cowgirls have paved the way for all of America and continue to be a key component to feeding fellow Americans,” Red said. “I could not be more proud for the Cowboy Gathering to continue on into the future, and I feel we have found the perfect team to pull this wagon forward.” “The Cowboy Gathering is a Stockyards staple and has a long-rooted history in preserving the cowboy way of life. We are honored Red has handed the reins to us, and we hope to continue this event for many years to come,” said Steven Hayes, with Marked for Greatness Properties. “The cowboy culture is the foundation of America. American Agricultural Exports Shattered Records in 2021 WASHINGTON, Feb. 8, 2022 – The American agricultural industry posted its highest annual export levels ever recorded in 2021, Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack announced today. The final 2021 trade data published by the Department of Commerce this morning shows that exports of U.S. farm and food products to the world totaled $177 billion, topping the 2020 total by 18 percent and eclipsing the previous record, set in 2014, by 14.6 percent. “These record-breaking trade numbers demonstrate that U.S. agriculture is incredibly resilient as it continues to provide high-quality, cost-competitive farm and food products to customers around

the globe and that the BidenHarris Administration’s agenda is working for American farmers and producers,” Vilsack said. “This is a major boost for the economy as a whole, and particularly for our rural communities, with agricultural exports stimulating local economic activity, helping maintain our competitive edge globally, supporting producers’ bottom lines, and supporting more than 1.3 million jobs on the farm and in related industries such as food processing and transportation.” The United States’ top 10 export markets all saw gains in 2021, with six of the 10 – China, Mexico, Canada, South Korea, the Philippines and Colombia –

setting new records. Worldwide exports of many U.S. products, including soybeans, corn, beef, pork, dairy, distillers grains and pet food, also reached all-time highs. China remained the top export destination, with a record $33 billion in purchases, up 25 percent from 2020, while Mexico inched ahead of Canada to capture the number two position with a record $25.5 billion, up 39 percent from last year. “It’s clear that our international

trading partners are responding favorably to a return to certainty from the United States,” Vilsack said. t

Arizona's newest professional extreme sports team, the Ridge Riders, select five of the world's leading athletes at inaugural PBR Team Series Draft BY: MANDI MCCARY

As one of the foundational partners of the first team-based league in the extreme sport of bull riding, western sports and entertainment brand Teton Ridge drafted five skilled, world-class athletes, including four international phenoms, on Monday evening for its 2022 PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Team, the Ridge Riders.

Ridge Riders General Manager Casey Lane, joined by Technical Coach Paulo Crimber (10-time World Finals qualifier) and Team Manager Colby Yates (Five-time World Finals qualifier) participated in an initial 5-round draft held at Texas Live! in Arlington, Texas alongside the seven other teams of the inaugural PBR Team Series. “Preparing for the draft Paulo, Colby and I were looking at all possibilities,” said Lane. “We are beyond proud of the team of five extremely talented bull riders who we drafted this evening to launch our franchise. More importantly, we are thrilled to have chosen athletes who are dedicated to their craft, committed to a winning attitude, and exemplify what it means to be a Ridge Rider.” Prior to the lottery draw, the league issued Draft guidelines which specified that the draft would be conducted in a “snake” format in which the first team to select in Round 1 would receive the last pick in Round 2 (Pick 16), the first pick in Round 3 (Pick 17), etc. The Ridge Riders began the night with the sixth pick in Round 1. Each team was eligible to select up to five riders unless they traded a draft pick. All PBR riders in good standing with the league were eligible for the draft as long as they declared by May 6. A combination of grit, determination and resilience wrapped into one steadfast group of athletes with a strong lineage in western sports, the inaugural Ridge Riders team will feature four of the world’s top Brazilian competitors: Luciano De Castro (Guzolandia, Sao Paulo, Brazil) - Round 1 pick Starting his career in 2015 when he claimed the PBR Brazil Rookie of the Year and Champion titles, Luciano De Castro has blazed a trail of success ever since. Having grown up watching his father raise bulls, De Castro developed a passion for the sport at a young age and began riding at age 16. Qualifying for four World Finals since his U.S. debut in 2017, the 26-year-old Brazilian finished the 2022 season at No. 4 in the world standings. Mauricio Moreira (Gaviao Peixoto, Sao Paulo, Brazil) - Round 2 pick Having started his professional career in 2019, Mauricio Moreira made a splash early on finishing in the Top 5 of the PBR Brazil Finals that year. Finishing the 2022 regular season at No. 8 in the world standings the 22-year-old young gun first began his career at the age of 15 riding alongside his father who was also a professional bull rider. A career milestone for the legacy athlete was when he qualified alongside his father at the famed Barretos event in Brazil. 106

Eduardo Aparecido (Gouvelandia, Brazil) - Round 3 pick 11-time World Finals qualifier Eduardo Aparecido watched rodeos on television as a child dreaming of someday standing alongside his idols on the dirt. That dream became a reality for the now 31-year-old veteran rider capturing him a variety of accolades along the way including being a four-time PBR Global Cup qualifier, two-time PBR Global Cup Champion (2018-2019), and many more. Most recently Aparecido finished the 2022 regular season at No. 14 in the world standings. Chase Dougherty (Decatur, Texas) - Round 4 pick With a family history steeped in western sports, Chase Dougherty not only pursued bull riding in his youth but also played football, wrestled and competed in pole vaulting into his college years. Becoming the 2018 NFR aggregate champion, he sparked a path for himself immediately. Having received a scholarship to Montana State University for the rodeo team, Dougherty also went on to be the No. 3 man in the 2021 PBR Rookie of the Year race. The 24-year-old new father finished the 2022 regular season at No. 16 in the world standings. Marco Eguchi (Poa, Brazil) - Round 5 pick 2018 World Finals event winner Marco Eguchi is no stranger to what it takes to rise to a champion level. Viewed as one of the veterans of the league Eguchi’s career is rooted in humble origins beginning in local arenas in his home country of Brazil. The 32-year-old, 10-time World Finals qualifier, was also a 2018 PBR Global Cup champion, 2018 Lane Frost/ Brent Thurman Award winner and more. Battling injuries at the start of the 2022 regular season, Eguchi still finished at No. 34 in the world standings.

The Ridge Riders represent one of several elevated western sports properties that Teton Ridge has assembled under its sports division’s portfolio. This division was created with the singular focus of elevating western sports and western culture to the world stage while broadening and diversifying audiences through enhanced production, technology, and innovation. From acquiring and producing the crown jewel of Rodeo, The American Rodeo, which awarded more than $3 million in cash and prizes, to assembling a team of the most accomplished and elite champions in the industry, Teton Ridge Sports is committed to strengthening, enriching, and furthering western sports for future competitors across all disciplines. The athletes drafted on Monday evening will be competing when the PBR Team Series regular season begins on July 25-26 at Cheyenne Frontier Days in Cheyenne, Wyoming. When the 10-event regular season begins, culminating in a Teams Championship in Las Vegas November 4-6, each team will have ten riders in total, including 7 “Protected Roster” riders and 3 “Practice Squad” developmental riders. The bull riding games that make up the season will feature five-onfive competition between two teams. Each regular-season event day will feature all teams in a head-to-head game. The Teton Ridge-owned Ridge Riders will call Glendale Arizona’s Gila River Arena home and host their homestand event and surrounding festivities, which will serve as the final game for the regular season, Friday, October 14 through Sunday, October 16.

Bureau of Land Management seeks services to expand fertility control efforts for wild horses and burros Tuesday, May 10, 2022 As part of its efforts to increase the use of fertility control to slow the growth of wild horse and burro herds on public lands, the Bureau of Land Management is seeking new contract services to humanely gather, treat with fertility control, and then release wild horses and burros back to the range. The BLM anticipates making up to $20 million available over 1-5 years for these efforts, subject to the government’s discretion based on future needs or appropriations. “Managing healthy wild horse and burro herds on healthy public lands is a top

priority for the Bureau of Land Management,” said Director Tracy Stone-Manning. “The BLM is laser focused on finding common-sense solutions to protect our public lands and the species that depend on them, especially as we face growing effects of drought and climate change.”

Wild horse and burro herds grow rapidly on public lands and can double every four or five years if not managed. As of March 1, 2022, the BLM estimated there were more than 82,000 wild horses and burros on public lands, which is more than three times the appropriate number. Overpopulated herds are put at increased risk for starvation and thirst, and they can over-use and degrade forage and water resources that are also important for thousands of other wildlife species that share public lands. As extreme drought conditions continue across the West, these impacts are amplified and have already caused the BLM to take a record number of emergency actions last year to save animals.
