Outer Range, A Western Drama Starring Osca

Outer Range on Prime Video

Outer Range centers on Royal Abbott (Josh Brolin), a rancher fighting for his land and family, who discovers an unfathomable mystery at the edge of Wyoming's wilderness. A thrilling fable with hints of wry humor and supernatural mystery, Outer Range examines how we grapple with the unknown. At the onset of the series, the Abbotts are coping with the disappearance of daughter-inlaw Rebecca. They are pushed further to the brink when the Tillersons (the gaudy owners of the neighboring profit-driven ranch) make a play for their land. An untimely death in the community sets off a chain of tension-filled events, and seemingly small-town, soil-bound troubles come to a head with the arrival of a mysterious black void in the Abbotts’ west pasture. Wild revelations unfold as Royal fights to protect his family; through his eyes, we begin to see how time contains secrets held in the past and unsettling mysteries foreshadowed. Led by Oscar-nominee Josh Brolin (Milk), Outer Range features an ensemble cast of award-winning and breakout talent, including Imogen Poots (I Know This Much is True), Lili Taylor (Perry Mason), Tamara Podemski (Four Sheets to the Wind), Lewis Pullman (Top Gun: Maverick), Tom Pelphrey (Ozark), Noah Reid (Schitt’s Creek), Shaun Sipos (Krypton), Isabel Arraiza (The Little Things), Olive Abercrombie (The Haunting of Hill House), and Will Patton (Yellowstone). Outer Range comes from creator and executive producer Brian Watkins, with executive producers Zev Borow, Heather Rae, Josh Brolin, Robin Sweet, Tony Krantz, Amy Seimetz, Lawrence Trilling, and Plan B Entertainment for Amazon Studios. Executive producers for Plan B Entertainment are Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Brad Pitt. The first season of Outer Range will consist of eight episodes, with two episodes premiering every week starting Friday, April 15, exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

Women's Rodeo World Championship announces No. 1-seeded leaderboard athletes advancing to the Showdown Round BY: KYLE JONES

The 2022 Women’s Rodeo World Championship (WRWC) recently announced the eight athletes advancing directly to the Showdown Round on May 16.

The May 16-18 event will mark WCRA’s second leg of the 2022 Triple Crown of Rodeo. The WRWC is the largest annual purse for a women’s rodeo event and will pay out more than $750,000 in 2022 while crowning World Champions in the Women’s Rodeo disciplines; Team Roping, Breakaway Roping and Barrel Racing. An All-Around Champion will also be crowned. WRWC is a culmination of a year-long race of women’s rodeo events worldwide. Athletes qualify for the WRWC by earning points and leaderboard positions using the VRQ (Virtual Rodeo Qualifier). Those athletes that earned an automatic berth to the Women’s Rodeo World Championship Showdown Round are: Pro Leaderboard: Team Roping Header: Bev Robbins (Muscle Shoals, Alabama), Team Roping Heeler: Jessy Remsburg (Leighton, Alabama), Barrel Racing: London Gorham (Cotulla, Texas), Breakaway Roping: Josie Conner (Iowa, Louisiana) Challenger Leaderboard: Team Roping Header: Sydney Ball (Max Meadows, Virginia), Team Roping Heeler: Sally Ball (Max

Meadows, Virginia), Barrel Racing: Britta Strain (Davie, Florida) Breakaway Roping: Rylie Edens (Hillsboro, Texas) These athletes secured their berths by achieving the No. 1 position on the 2022 WRWC leaderboard, which included nominated competition efforts at events held from October 2021 to April 2022. On May 18 at the WRWC held at the historic Cowtown Coliseum, these athletes will be joined in the Showdown Round by the top four fastest times from each challenger and pro leaderboard in the Semi-Final Round (May 17). This year marks the second consecutive WRWC event Josie Conner has secured her automatic berth to the Showdown Round. In 2021, the 18-year-old notched the fastest time in the progressive round with a 2.23-second time to advance to the main event. The Louisiana-native has won over $56,900 in Triple Crown of Rodeo Events. Launched in 2019, the Triple Crown of Rodeo presented by Lazy E Ranch and Arena is an annual bonus that will pay $1 million to any one athlete, or collection of athletes, who win first place in any three consecutive WCRA Major Rodeos. The 2022 schedule includes four Triple Crown of Rodeo events, beginning with Rodeo Corpus Christi May 11-14, followed immediately by the Women’s Rodeo World Championship in Fort Worth May 16-18. Utah Days of ‘47 Rodeo in Salt Lake City July 20-23 & 25 will be the third stop while the 2022 tour will wrap up with the Cowtown Christmas Championship Rodeo December 14-17.

NRCHA Western Derby at WestWorld in June 1-11

Metallic Cat first NRCHA $5 Million Sire

At the DT Horses Western Derby, increased added money await the 4- and 5-year-old horse and rider pairs, many of which competed at the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity® when the horses were 3 years old. Horses may be shown in either a snaffle bit or a hackamore in the Western Derby. They are judged in three challenging events: herd work, rein work and fence (cow) work, with a preliminary round of competition to determine who will return for the clean-slate finals. The DT Horses Western Derby features nine divisions to suit all levels, from million-dollar riders in the Open, entry-level competitors in the Amateur and Non Pro Limited, and every level of competitor in between. A DT Horses Western Derby highlight is the Holy Cow Performance Horses CD Survivor Open Bridle Spectacular. The event features many of the industry’s seasoned and successful older horses that are in the bridle vying for $25,000 in added money through herd, rein and cow works. The Intermediate Open Bridle Spectacular has $2,500 added. In addition to the limited age event and the Spectaculars, a full slate of horse show classes feature added money that totals $52,750. This includes the Open and Non Pro Two Rein Spectaculars, Non Pro Bridle Spectacular, Non Pro Limited Spectacular and two Youth Spectaculars.

The National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) announced Metallic Cat as the association’s first Five Million Dollar sire. Following the conclusion of the Teton Ridge Stallion Stakes, Metallic Cat’s offspring had earned more than $5,064,486, making him the first sire to cross the $5 million threshold in NRCHA. Owned by Bobby Patton’s Rocking P Ranch, the 2005 stallion by High Brow Cat and out of Chers Shadow (by Peptoboonsmal) became the NRCHA All-Time Leading Sire back in September of 2021 when he surpassed Shining Spark, who held the record for the past 17 years. “It says as much about NRCHA as it does about Metallic Cat that this milestone has been crossed for the first time in the association’s history,” said Bobby Patton. “We’re proud of this accomplishment and this partnership. Metallic Cat and NRCHA make a good team.” Metallic Cat became an NRCHA Million Dollar Sire in 2018 and surpassed the Two Million Dollar mark less than a year later. By 2020, he had passed the Three Million Dollar mark before becoming a Four Million Dollar sire in the fall of 2021. In just over the last five months, Metallic Cat’s offspring have earned an excess of $814,000 in the reined cow horse. “The success of NRCHA and our events depends so heavily on great partners and great horses, and Metallic Cat has played a role in both of those for the cow horse,” said Anna Morrison. “We couldn’t be happier for Bobby Patton and all of the Metallic Cat connections for continuing to make history with NRCHA.” With over 380 money-earning offspring in the NRCHA, Metallic Cat has become a household name in both the reined cow horse and the Western performance industries. His top performers, Call Me Mitch, Metallic Train, Cats Picasso, Ricato Suave, Hazardouz Material, and Moonshineandtwoadvil, each have earned over $100,000 in the NRCHA. 34

National Reined Cow Horse Association announces 2022 World Show Qualifying Rules

The National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) announced that they will be maintaining the current qualifying rules for the 2022 NRCHA World Show, to be held in February 2023 at the Kalpowar Quarter Horses Celebration of Champions, due to the considerable growth seen at the last year’s event. During the 2022 point year, Open and Non Pro competitors will have two ways to qualify: compete a minimum of three times in a given class at three different NRCHA-approved shows regardless of region and earn at least a half-point, or be a finalist at the AQHA, APHA, or SHTX World Shows. Youth competitors can qualify by showing at least three times in their respective youth class or by being a finalist at the AQHA, APHA, or SHTX World Shows. “The growth the NRCHA continues to see is remarkable,” said Anna Morrison, NRCHA executive director. “The Board wants to ensure that the opportunity to participate at the Celebration of Champions reflects that as they continue to look at qualifying guidelines for future years.”

STAR BULL RIDER J.B. MAUNEY BY TRACY RENCK, PSN EDITOR

RETURNS TO PRCA

Superstar bull rider J.B. Mauney is returning to PRCA action.

Mauney made his season debut at the Helotes (Texas) Festival Association Rodeo, April 29, and then competed at the 44th George Paul Memorial Division 1 Xtreme Bulls April 30 in Del Rio, Texas. Mauney hasn't competed since failing to register a score on Big Rafter's Resistol's Cliff Hanger in Round 10 of the 2021 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge, Dec. 11 in Las Vegas. Mauney battled through injuries during his Wrangler NFR debut, which resulted in him having surgery on his right groin Feb. 22 in Philadelphia, Pa. "I hurt the groin at the NFR but come to find out it had been an injury I had for years," said Mauney, 35. "They had to reattach an abductor and they dug a big chunk of bone out that was about three inches long and a half an inch wide. When I partially tore my groin in Vegas where that muscle balled up it was right on top of it. When I was riding, it was pushing that bone. It (the bone) was right up against the nerve and the main artery running through my leg. (Dr.) Tandy (Freeman) said it had been there for years. "They think I chipped something and once I chipped it, it got in the muscle and eventually it calcified and got bigger and bigger and bigger, and they had to dig it out of my leg." Mauney said following the surgery he was expected to be out for two months. "We are going to find out how the surgery held up come Friday," Mauney said. "My life has revolved around bull riding and not being able to do it .... I can kind of fill the void because I have bucking bulls at home. I have all that, but still, it is not the same (as riding 42

bulls). I know one thing I don't like working. "I'm not going as hard right off the bat. I'm going to take it easy until the middle to end of May and go to whatever is close (to home) and then after that I'm going to hit them hard." Mauney and his family are now living in Stephenville, Texas. "I bought this place at the end of 2020, and I have been working and fixing it up ever since," he said. The George Paul Memorial Xtreme Bull Riding is a two-day event with 80 minimum entries. There will be one long round each day with a finals (top 10 from each performance). The payoff for the long go-round, the finals and the average will be determined by the highest scores from both combined performances. It starts at 9 p.m. (ET) each night and can be seen on The Cowboy Channel and the PRCA on Cowboy Channel Plus App. A year ago, Mauney took third in the George Paul Memorial event, which was won by TJ Gray. "I've wanted to win that thing so bad," Mauney said. "I have been there three times total, and I won second twice and third once." In 2021, Mauney finished 12th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $146,466. He split the Round 1 win with an 87.5-point ride on Painted Pony Championship Rodeo's Cocktail Diarrhea. "It was a long time since I have been nervous riding bulls and I was nervous," Mauney said about his inaugural appearance at the NFR. "That was the perfect way to start the NFR off, winning the first round at the first NFR I have ever been to. We were joking in the locker room and those guys were like 'You have been on a lot of bulls in the Thomas & Mack, and you always do good.' I told them not necessarily. They were like what do you mean, and I said it will either go one or two ways. It either goes really, really good, or really, really bad. There's no in between for me in that building. "My goal is to ride all 10 bulls at the NFR. People were asking me if I was going to hang it up and I said why would I do that. Do you really think I could hang my hat up on riding one out of 10 bulls at the NFR? The day I think I can't show up and win will be the last you will ever see me."

Q - What can folks expect to see at the DT Western Derby now it’s 3rd

year at WestWorld. A - At all three premier events this year there have been over 200 entries in just the Open Derby alone. The Tres Osos Derby in February that runs along with the World’s Greatest, the Teton Ridge Stallion Stakes in Las Vegas, and the now the DT Horses Western Derby in Scottsdale have all had over 200 entries in the Open Derby. That has been an over 30% growth if I remember it correctly, compared to last year. Because of the growth, we have reconstructed our pens and the event competition layout. The Equidome is going to be for the Reining and Fence Work only. Also because of the growth we have to set up a permanent Cutting pen in the North Hall. That is something that will be new and will make the experience even better. We will have the perfect back drop, the perfect sized pen and the perfect ground to have a better show. By having those pens set up for the specifically for those events. By having those two permanent pens, we won’t have to run any horse show classes in the North Hall. The North Hall is just as much air conditioned, but it was a little bit of a hassle to haul the cattle over there, set them up and there was no bleachers. It was a good experience, and last years exhibitors got shown good and no one complained about it, but it was just the feel of being in that show ring. More attention is going to be drawn in maybe a more specific arena. We want to showcase our riders and the classes in the best possible way.

Q - The exposure on Yellowstone for working cow horse – what kind

of impact is that having on the sport? A - It’s amazing! A big Thank You to Taylor and Nicole Sheridan for everything that they do in supporting this with The Run for A Million and even the added money at the qualifiers. We had over 90 Bridle Horses at the Run for A Million qualifier at the Stallion Stakes event this year. I am just going to say this, that with that growth there will be just as many entries for this next qualifier at the DT Horses Western Derby, where they will take the next 8 guys back. Then that is it. Guys will be bringing more horses for more opportunities to make that Top 8. It has been so great, with all of these record numbers it has been such a great problem. With us as a Board, the NRCHA is always looking for what’s coming, or what has become a problem and we try to stay ahead of it the best that we can.

Q - Sum of the name Taylor Sheridan in three words. A - Visionary - Confident - Believer Q - You had a small speaking part on Yellowstone, what did your family think about that?

A - They said to me, “Why are you training horses? You should be an

actor!” They did not really say that! Really, they were just excited. It is neat when you may not have heard from a friend in a long time and they just give you a “High Five” thru a text a phone call or something like that. The one scene they had to retake like 4 or 5 times. I was probably messing it up. It was fun and it’s something kinda cool and not something that every person gets to have in their life. I am very honored and thankful that I got the opportunity on such an incredible TV Show. We are getting publicity thru Yellowstone and TRFAM, but I myself for Yellowstone, have not heard if they want me back or anything like that, since then.

Q - Did you ever expect to be on a major television show seen by millions? A - No, but it was a fun surprise in life. 44

Corey Cushing Interview

Q - As the past and present President of NRCHA, are you satisfied with the direction the Association is headed?

A - Absolutely! Between the growth and the numbers, the conversations

that we have in our board meetings where we are looking towards the future, not just sitting back and kicking our feet up and going, “Well everything seems to be going pretty good, OK nothing else to talk about.” We are always talking about what can be next. How can it be bigger? How can it be better? Along the way it makes for challenges, but we have been able to work thru it and we all have learned a lot along the way. We plan to keep going in that direction.

Q - What is the hardest part of the job? A - There are so many people that watch out for me that it is not hard,

but it is time consuming. We try and set-up all of our meetings at day or two before the horse shows start at our major events. At our premier events, and when you go there, the average number of horses that I take is anywhere between 10 and 15. So, we are there having an all day meeting while people are down there practicing and getting ready for the event. It has all worked out to be so great. So many people watch out for me and cover for me in areas, so it is just time consuming.

money. That is his horse. Teton Ridge was excited for his interest in it and wanting to do it and they are supporting him in it too. This is all up to him, this is his. You know how Andrea is, he has a goal in mind. Being the great rider that he is, he is learning to become a better listener. We have had a lot of fun together with him coming over and taking lessons. It has helped me, to be honest, too. We are always picking each others brains while having a lot of fun. From what he tells me, it is a big release for him. It was exciting to see Andrea at Sun Circuit because it was a collaboration between two really great horseman! The Teton Ridge Team was working together….

Q - Corey, you used to do a lot in Reining, and you did it very

well, but we have never seen Andrea cross over to something else.

A - No, he hasn’t, that is right. That was his very first time competing in

the Cow Horse, and he takes it very, very serious. I will leave you with this, he is going to be a very big threat the more that he works on this. He is going to have a very good chance at the Snaffle Bit Futurity this year. His Snaffle Bitter for this year is really nice! He has done his homework, he takes it extremely serious and he is doing great. I am excited to see how it all plays out. It is going to be fun - win, lose or draw. Because we do have a lot of fun! We spend more time harassing each other than actually anything done, but when it is time to get serious a lot of good stuff comes out of it.

Q - Besides you, has anyone ever won the World’s Greatest

Q - Will you still be his coach? A - I hope so, unless he fires me.

A - Russell Dilday won it all three times on Topsails Rein Maker.

Q - Corey, you used to really do well in the Reining- will you

Horseman 3-times what are three keys you can share with our readers to achieving that accomplishment?

now get back to showing the Reining again?

Patience, time and consistency is what it take to create a World’s Greatest horse!

A - That is an interesting question because after being out of it for a

Q - How does it feel to have achieved that goal? A - Honored. I had three different customers that trusted my program.

Q - Your son Caleb is making his mark in the horse world,

while, I now am eligible for all of the Levels.

how does that make you feel?

I have so many great customers that trust my judgement and plan. It always doesn’t go according to plan, but they allow me the time to be creative and work thru challenges as they come about. Really I am honored more than anything.

Q - You joined the Teton Ridge Team and moved to Texas – why?

A - Opportunity is the # 1 reason, and this is going to be a great next

chapter in life for me and my family. I am in the middle of moving right now. It is super exciting! Stressful too. I mean as we speak, I have got 33 horses driving down the road, on five rigs and four cows. We all left starting at 2am this morning. We left in waves, kinda in shifts, and right now the first truck is not too far from pulling into the ranch. Right now I am in Abilene, so about an hour and a half to go for us. My family will move out after the Western Derby because of school. It was time for me to get going and start this next chapter.

Q - Teton Ridge has become a major player over-night. How do you feel about that?

A -I love it!

What they are going to do for the industry, what they have created, what they are creating is just great. They are fantastic. They are only out there to make the Western Lifestyle that much better.

Q - Recently you were coaching Andrea Fappani in cow horse at the Sun Circuit, and he looked pretty solid, what’s up with that?

A - It is a personal goal for him. That was his first Cow Horse that you saw at the Sun Circuit, and he bought that horse himself with his own 48

A - Oh, I do not know the words beyond proud! I don’t know what that word is for both Kristen and I. Because it is out livelihood, and because we grew up doing it, we defiantly wanted him to at least give it a try. If he wants to keep moving forward, we left it up to him. Yes, he has been blessed with an awesome horse, and that horse has been in our lives for a long time and means so much to us. When the opportunity arose that on day it could be Caleb’s horse, and what those two have achieved so far and how much joy it gives us to watch him. It is words beyond proud for us as parents. Q - His timing is really good A - Well, Thank You. It has been a

lot of fun watching him this past year with him understanding and realizing more and more. His timing has been something he has had to work on. It has been something where he goes out there and GT has just been taking care of him. And it started to effect him a little bit, but now he is starting to understand the importance of how to hold your hand, when do you use your leg and little things like that, that have really raised the bar for him. It’s exciting because I know that he can do things, but just like everything, he has got to work on it. He has a great horse, and opportunities to ride with everyone. All of our friends are constantly giving him help, or maybe a lesson, or a little tip here and there. It is so cool to see that and how he knows that is just going to make him a better horseman.

Spring Sale buyers spent $92 million on horses in Ocala

The clip-clop of horseshoes filled the air as the first group of horses made its way into the walking ring at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s Spring Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale on Friday. A breeze blew between the barns, swaying the limbs of the oak trees while horses whinny and potential buyers peer out from behind their sunglasses, scoping out the remaining horses on the last day of the four-day sale. With a bustling crowd of bidders in the sales pavilion and auction ring, the sale finished strong and set multiple OBS records with the help of five horses that sold for over $1 million. The previous overall record for the Spring Sale, set at $73,874,900 last year for 724 horses, was surpassed by this year's $92,070,000 for 710 horses, an increase of nearly 25%.

Queen Elizabeth's New Birthday Portrait Honors Her Equestrian Background

BY CHELSEY SANCHEZ

Queen Elizabeth II is celebrating her 96th birthday by honoring her late husband, Prince Philip, and her lifelong love of horses.

The Royal Windsor Horse Show released a new birthday portrait of the monarch, captured by renowned landscape photographer Henry Dallal, who has previously photographed the queen and her horses. The portrait shows Her Majesty standing in between two of her fell ponies, Bybeck Katie and Bybeck Nightingale, on the grounds of Windsor Castle. She holds the reins of her ponies while dressed in a deep moss green coat. The color seems to be a subtle nod to Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, who passed away last year at 99 years old. "Edinburgh green," as it has been dubbed, is closely associated to her late husband, who was known to use the shade for his livery as well as in other official capacities. Queen Elizabeth wore the color during Prince Philip's memorial service this past March, as well as other members of the royal family including Princess Anne and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. The monarch, whose passion for equestrianism has been welldocumented throughout her reign, has been spotted on multiple occasions riding horses even well into her 90s.

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip observe a horse on the Balmoral estate in 1972. Photo by: MATT GREEN,GETTY IMAGES

She once reportedly said of her favorite sport, per an ITV documentary, "I'm rather a fairweather rider now. I don't like getting cold and wet." Duchess Camilla had also reportedly "marveled to see her mother-in law’s stamina as there is no one who could be riding a horse at the age of 90, and it was something she found was incredible about her mother-in law." 62

Zoo clones endangered horse from cells of 40-year-old stallion

Little Kurt looks like any other baby horse but 2-month-old Kurt differs from every other baby horse of his kind in one distinct way: He’s a clone.

64

The rare, endangered Przewalski’s horse was created from cells taken from a stallion that had sat frozen at the San Diego Zoo for 40 years before they were fused with an egg from a domestic horse. With the egg’s nucleus removed, ensuring Kurt would be basically all Przewalski’s horse, they were implanted in the mare who would become his mom on Aug. 6. The result, officials say, was the world’s first cloned Przewalski’s horse. The zoo sees his birth as a milestone in efforts to restore the population of the horse also known as the Asiatic Wild Horse or Mongolian Wild Horse. The small, stocky animals (they stand only about 4 to 5 feet tall at the withers) are believed extinct in the wild and number only about 2,000 in zoos and wildlife habitats. Their limited gene pool puts them at a reproductive disadvantage. “This colt is expected to be one of the most genetically important individuals of his species,” Bob Wiese, chief life sciences officer at San Diego Zoo Global, which operates the zoo, said in a statement. “We are hopeful that he will bring back genetic variation important for the future of the Przewalski’s horse population.” Although only 2 months old, Kurt’s birth was made possible in 1980 when cells were taken from a 5-year-old stallion and put in deep freeze at San Diego’s Frozen Zoo facility. His father died in 1998. Kurt was named for Kurt Benirschke, who played a key role in founding the Frozen Zoo with its extensive research program and cell cultures. “A central tenet of the Frozen Zoo, when it was established by Dr. Benirschke, was that it would be used for purposes not possible at the time,” said Oliver Ryder, director of genetics at San Diego Zoo Global. The zoo worked in collaboration with the California conservation group Revive & Restore and the Texas-based company ViaGen Equine in creating Kurt. He was born at a veterinary facility in Texas where he’ll continue to live with his mother for most likely another year. Eventually he’ll be integrated into the zoo’s Przewalski’s horse population, where it’s hoped someday he’ll become a father himself. Przewalski’s horses take their official name from Russian explorer Nikolai Przewalski, who found a skull and hide of one and shared it with a Russian museum. At one time they ranged throughout Europe and Asia, according to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Biology Conservation Institute. Encroaching human population and livestock eventually pushed them out of Europe and east to parts of Asia like the Gobi Desert. Outside of zoos, they exist today only in reintroduction sites in Mongolia, China, and Kazakhstan. According to the Smithsonian, they are the only true wild horses left in the world. The institute maintains wild horse herds in North America and Australia don’t count because they are the ancestors of escaped domesticated horses.

Stetson Wright honored with 2022 BY: ANN BLEIKER / PRCA

Lewis Feild Memorial Award

SALT LAKE CITY – Stetson Wright, a five-time PRCA World Champion, will be honored as the recipient of the 2022 Lewis Feild Memorial Award at the Governor’s State of Sport Awards hosted by the Utah Sports Commission.

Utah is known as the State of Sport — and for good reason! Through the years of appreciation for adventure, Utah has carved out a distinct reputation as the premier sport destination for Olympic, professional, amateur and action sporting events. By leveraging its world-class venues and aweinspiring backdrops, Utah also has an established reputation as a top international sports destination. In 2012, the Utah Sports Commission created the Governor’s State of Sport Awards, which celebrates Utah’s sports industry and honors excellence in high school, collegiate, adaptive, professional, Olympic and Paralympic sports. The Utah Sports Commission is the proud host of the Governor’s State of Sport Awards which has honored Utah’s finest athletes, teams, coaches, events, and numerous Utah sports icons. This will mark the fourth time that the Lewis Feild Award will be presented. Prior to 2022, the award was limited to only bareback riders but this year was expanded to any rodeo competitor from Utah. Wright was an obvious choice as he has quickly made a name for himself within the ranks of professional rodeo. 68

MAY 2022

Wright joined the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) in 2018 and since then he has won a total of five world titles including being a three-time world champion in the All-Around category as well as a bull riding (2020) and saddle bronc riding (2021) world champion. He is already being compared to Hall of Famer Ty Murray, who competed in all three roughstock disciplines of bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding. Stetson is the first cowboy in PRCA history to win three straight all-around titles to start his career. He also is the first cowboy to collect three all-around titles in a row since Trevor Brazile accomplished that feat in 2013-2015. In 2019, Stetson became the first Utah cowboy since Lewis Feild to capture the all-around title in the PRCA. Stetson added to the family history of saddle bronc riding world titles in 2021, edging out his older brother Ryder by a mere $1,187. The entire Wright family owns a total of seven saddle bronc riding world titles. Stetson’s father, Cody, earned the family’s first two in 2008 and 2010. Then Stetson’s uncles Jesse and Spencer each earned one in 2012 and 2014, respectively. Ryder earned his first in 2017 and followed that up with his second in 2020. Stetson started competing in rodeo in fourth grade and is the only member of the Wright family to compete in bull riding. He graduated from Milford (Utah) High School in 2018 with a class of 35 students. In addition to rodeo, he also competed in football and wrestling in high school. Wright joins bareback riders Caleb Bennett, Tim O’Connell and Tanner Aus, who were previously honored with this award.

STATLER WRIGHT

CAPTURES TITLE AT COWBOY CHANNEL ROOKIE ROUNDUP

Sometimes, a roughstock cowboy might wait months or even years to get a second ride on the same animal. For rookie saddle bronc rider Statler Wright, the wait was barely two weeks. And Wright made that recently acquired knowledge pay off in Saturday’s short round at the inaugural Cowboy Channel Rookie Roundup presented by Resistol in Fort Worth, Texas. Wright, the latest to join the PRCA in a family full of successful saddle bronc riders, posted an 88.5-point ride aboard Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s Border Town at the historic Cowtown Coliseum. “I actually got on that horse a couple weeks ago at San Angelo (Texas),” Wright said, noting he had a solid 84-point ride in the Cinch Chute-Out. “I knew what I had to do to ride him a little better this time. I really wanted to be super aggressive. I felt like last time, I wasn’t aggressive enough.”

The first performance on April 29 featured all 15 contestants in a single go-round of competition. The top eight contestants in each event were then brought back to compete in the semifinals on April 30 with the top four then advancing to the championship round that same performance. The 18-year-old Wright has been traveling with older brother and two-time world champion Ryder Wright. The younger Wright hadn’t claimed the top spot at a rodeo since February. “I kept telling Ryder, ‘I just want one win, and it’ll boost me,’” Wright said, noting earlier this year, while still on his PRCA permit, he got wins in Hattiesburg and South Haven, Miss., and at Lake Charles, La. “But since then, I hadn’t won a rodeo. I was really itching for a win,” he said, excited about notching his first victory on his actual rookie PRCA card. “It feels really good.” Statler had an 84.5-point ride on Pickett Pro Rodeo’s Fire Freckles to advance out of the semifinals. The first-place ride by Statler in the championship round was worth $2,500. Wright also added a second-place, 85-point ride on Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s Spur Strap in the first round of the Rookie Roundup, for an additional $1,069. Money won during the Cowboy Channel Rookie Roundup presented by Resistol will count towards the Resistol Rookie Standings but will not be credited towards the PRCA | RAM World Standings for NFR qualification. Wright said his solid weekend – and of course the victory – certainly gives him some fuel going forward. “I think it’ll boost my confidence a lot,” he said. “The horses were really good today. They put us on the best horses, ones that they knew would challenge us, and I thought that helped me out a lot.” Wright has $6,144 in qualifying earnings thus far in 2022. So, he knows there’s work to do if he wants to end up where the rest of his namesake tends to end up at season’s end: the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. “I plan on being there, and not to just watch,” he said. “I don’t like watching it very much!” 70

The cost of grazing this year on federal land in the USA’s western states is unchanged from last year, with the fee again $US1.35 per head per month.

range by a cow/calf pair, by five goats or sheep, or by a single bull, steer, heifer, horse, burro, or mule. The grazing fee is calculated by considering the average annual change in beef cattle prices, leasing rates for grazing on private land in the western states, and the costs of livestock production.

The western states fee applies to about 6000 permits administered by the Forest Service in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wyoming and the national grasslands in Texas.

Congress established the formula used for calculating grazing fees in the 1976 Federal Land Policy and Management Act and as amended in the 1978 Public Rangelands Improvement Act. It has continued under a presidential Executive Order in 1986. Under that Executive Order, the grazing fee cannot fall below $US1.35 per head month and any change in fees cannot be more than 25% of the previous year’s level. Grazing fees apply to rangelands managed by the Department of Interior’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in addition to the USDA Forest Service. The grazing fee is calculated based on data collected annually by the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistical Service, including the average annual change in beef cattle prices, leasing rates for grazing on private land in the western states, and the costs of livestock production. The USDA Forest Service manages about 193 million acres in 44 states, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

Who trains him to become the deadliest assassin on earth. Then gives him a cause that makes it all “for the good of mankind”. That cause ? “PATRIOTISM “ Is he ? A patriot… ? Jim Eagle, an entrepreneur, inventor, stock speculator, “car guy,” poet, author, and weekend cowboy, lives in the shadows of Black Mountain, which looms over an old western mining town in the Arizona desert north of Phoenix, called Cave Creek. Jim is well aquatinted with shadows, for he has spent the last fifty years of his life living in the shadows . . . of anger, guilt, and self-analysis.

The Backstory…

“When you lose a child, you lose yourself.”

THE SOUL OF A MAN may or may not be his story; it is, however, his soul. In an eight-part docudrama in print, Jim attempts to redeem himself with the God of his youth. As he reunites with him, together they weave an entertaining, thought-provoking, intriguing, and heart-wrenching tale filled with emotion, pain, love, hate, anger, guilt, and regret. Challenging both fact and fiction, each battling for supremacy. All with one goal in mind: to help all those less fortunate children of the world, not only to survive but to thrive in the world God has chosen to place them. Jim hopes to accomplish this goal by using the proceeds from this docudrama to provide the means and guidance to these children’s caregivers and heartbroken parents. Praying that they may find peace and happiness in their own lives while willingly accepting the task that God has assigned to them. Ever hopeful that the journey helps him find some semblance of peace in his own restless soul. Wanting to believe that maybe, just maybe . . .

By Anita Roman A book reading program at a Cave Creek animal rescue is helping rehabilitate - not just for the readers, but for the listeners, too. The Books in the Barn Program at Healing Hearts Horse Rescue involves school-aged children reading to a unique audience: horses. And they're all ears. "It's a wonderful experience for both child and horse," said Jennifer Braumbaugh, executive director of the nonprofit. "It allows the child to read without any judgment, they can work on their literacy skills, and the horses have the benefit of the children and in getting stimulation." Braumbaugh says the goal is to make the horses more social. "It's claiming, it's really good for them," the director said. "Our goal is to have them adopted out to a forever home, so any interacting with children with families on a daily basis helps them learn appropriate behaviors and to calm themselves." More than 1,000 children have participated since the program began in 2013, and hundreds of horses have found healing and a new home.

professionalism,” Patti Carter, NRHA Sr. Director of Education & Officials, said. As a former NRHA Derby judge, Carter has first-hand knowledge of how the men and women selected for this year feel. “The NRHA Derby is one of the pinnacle events of the industry. It’s an honor to have the opportunity to officiate the Derby, and a privilege to have the best seat in the house for this great reining,” she said. The selection process for judges at each major NRHA event begins several months before the first horse ever enters the pen. Here’s how they are chosen for the NRHA Futurity and NRHA Derby: Each eligible judge is contacted for their availability for the event. All available judges are compiled into a list and sent to each member of the Judges Committee. Judges Committee members make selections from the list to fill the allotted slots for the event. These names are compiled into a shortlist and discussed on a conference call with all members of the Judges Committee. Nominations are allowed to be made on this conference call. The committee members, except for the chair, then rank their choices and each ranking equates to a certain number of points. The points are compiled and submitted to the committee chair. The committee chair reviews and makes recommendations based on the outcome of the vote and the needs of NRHA. The ranked list with the Judges Committee Chair recommendations is submitted for final selection. This process is set in place to ensure that the Derby will be a well-judged competition with the quality and professionalism of the selected judges.

LACK OF ENTRIES FORCES CANCELATION OF 2022 NCHA WESTERN NATIONALS

On the heels of a recordbreaking year of entries across National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) weekend events and an incredibly successful maiden year for the NCHA Circuit Program, the

Executive Committee has voted to cancel the 2022 NCHA Western National Championship presented by 6666 Ranch that was tentatively scheduled for May 19 through May 28, in Reno, Nevada. At the time this decision

was made, only 62 individual entries had been submitted of the 6,246 individuals that are qualified to enter the NCHA National Championships. The applicable National Championship fees that have already been collected will be divided out equally with money allocated to the 13 affiliates that

Jay Winborn are hosting NCHA Weekend. The fees serving their original purpose of supporting and fostering weekend competition was a very important component of this difficult decision. “We have seen tremendous growth across the weekend level of competition, and this decision to cancel Western Nationals was not made lightly,” said Jay Winborn, NCHA executive director. “Cutting continues to grow, and we are excited for the opportunity to further support the return of NCHA Weekend as we experience increased participation at all levels of our sport.” NCHA Weekend is a provision of the National Circuit Program that celebrates the weekend cutter. Each of NCHA’s 13 circuits will host one event during June 23-26, 2022, produced by local affiliates. NCHA Weekend will include added money, double circuit points, and weekend awards. The Executive Committee is thoughtfully considering the future of the NCHA Western National Championship presented by 6666 Ranch. Please note that the 2023 NCHA Eastern National Championship presented by 6666 Ranch will continue to be held and is scheduled to take place in West Monroe, Louisiana. 82

also plans to provide ongoing sources of continuing education for distribution by veterinarians to their clients. In addition, the organization will work to assess the industry’s current level of equine biosecurity knowledge via a survey of horse owners and veterinarians. “Dealing with COVID-19 has highlighted the need for biosecurity procedures to reduce risk of infection; however, most horse owners are still not fully aware of the threat to their horses from both endemic and foreign animal diseases either at home or when traveling,” said Nathaniel A. White II, DVM, MS, DACVS, EDCC director. “We need to understand the gaps in biosecurity knowledge. Armed with that information, we will create specific plans for facilities and events, enabling the industry to react to domestic and foreign disease threats,” he continued. The EDCC says its goal is for all facets of the horse industry (owners, producers, veterinarians, and allied industry) to benefit from the continuing education information and biosecurity templates created during this project. White and Katie McDaniel, EDCC’s communication manager, will work with the AAEP’s Infectious Disease Committee to create “how-to” plans and resources that will be available on the EDCC website. These tools will help owners and veterinarians decrease disease risks during horse shows, events, race meets, breeding operations, pleasure horse activities, and travel. Infographic designs for signage, visual aids, and presentations will be made available through the EDCC, supporting member organizations and allied companies.

Equine Library Donated to Cal Poly Pomona

GET YOURS!

90

The California Thoroughbred Foundation is donating the contents of the Carleton F. Burke Library in Arcadia—one of the most extensive collections of equine literature found anywhere—to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. "This is such a rare and specialized collection that it is a great match with an academic library," said Foundation President Ada Gates Patton. "Officials from Cal Poly Pomona approached us about acquiring the library, with proposed expert management of books and increased public access. "The Foundation does not have resources like those at Cal Poly. In addition, with more and more material available on the Internet, in-person use of the library decreased in recent years, followed by a two-year closure because of the pandemic. So after studying the proposal carefully, our board voted for the donation. This will benefit anyone interested in publications about horses, whether for serious study or just pleasure reading." The university intends to digitize research books for worldwide access, exposing the Burke Library to a far wider audience than the Foundation could offer. "We have been privileged to own this unique collection and open it to the public, and we look forward to its professional preservation and even wider availability at Cal Poly Pomona," said Gates Patton. The Burke Library has been housed in the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association building in Arcadia, across the street from Santa Anita Park.

Bacteria From Horses Give Clues to Antibiotic Resistance

By Christa Lesté-Lasserre Humans, horses, and other domestic animals share living spaces, companionship, food—even pathogens (disease-causing organisms). According to researchers, that means they’re sharing those pathogens’ antimicrobial resistance determinants (genes and mutations), as well. So when veterinarians and other health professionals submit bacteria for whole genome sequencing to a national database, they help contribute to a better understanding—and, hence, better control—of the spread of antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) pathogens across different host species, including horses, dogs, and people, said Laura Goodman, PhD, assistant research professor in Cornell University’s Department of Public & Ecosystem Health, in Ithaca, New York. Goodman spoke during the 2021 American Association of Equine Practitioners’ convention, held virtually and in person in Nashville, Tennessee, last December. “We have an excellent federal database in place that allows us to look at the full raw data and take a deep dive into every single isolate being studied,” she said. Decades of antibiotic treatment to fight pathogenic bacteria has led to the microbes’ ability to escape the effects of antimicrobial drugs and disinfectants. That antimicrobial resistance—as confirmed by multiple studies showing pathogens survive after antibiotic treatments—results from veritable genetic mechanisms that can be identified through genomic sequencing, Goodman said. Sequencing can allow scientists to screen bacterial DNA for multiple known determinants in a single run, with results uploaded and accessible within hours, she said. The database shows which drugs the bacteria are likely to be resistant to and is linked to the host species the sample came from—human, dog, cat, cow, horse, etc.—and the region of the country. However, it does not provide specific information about the treating veterinarian, for example, or the name of the farm it came from. “With this surveillance, we want to bring the data back to the clinical practitioners and not point fingers, but really just get useful information,” she said. Researchers at the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System for Enteric Bacteria (NARMS), a collaboration between U.S. federal agencies, state agencies, and universities, have been collecting data from tens of thousands of bacterial pathogens

92

found in humans and animal food products since 1996, Goodman said. But in the past decade, scientists detected a “blind spot” in the story, because humans and livestock also share pathogens with other companion animals—dogs, cats, and horses—and the program did not include these species, any living livestock, or any sick animals. “This was really a gap that needed to be addressed,” she said. Scientists were further concerned about the growing popularity of commercial raw food products for pet cats and dogs. “When one orders one of these products, typically online, the odds are about 50/50 that it’s going to contain at least one human pathogen,” said Goodman. Her team has been working with the U.S. FDA Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network’s genomic sequencing data collection initiative, which started looking at companion animal pathogens in 2017, and they immediately found worrisome results. A pet dog’s lung sample included E. coli bacteria that had many antimicrobial resistance determinants known to provide resistance for nearly every antimicrobial currently available, she said. Two years later, they found multiple dogs and cats treated in the same referral hospital that were infected with E. coli and had as many as 22 determinants related to antibiotic resistance, said Goodman. “These 22 determinants confer resistance not only to carbapenems (an antibiotic class) but also six other classes of drugs,” she said.

Now in Year 5 of their companion animal surveillance program, Goodman and her colleagues are also receiving samples from horses— and the results are not reassuring. They had hoped horses might only carry bacteria that’s very susceptible to most drugs, but that’s not the case. “We’re starting to see some isolates from horses that are more resistant than isolates from any other animal,” she said. “And this is something I’m really concerned about and want to monitor closely.” Salmonella strains in horses, in particular, have started showing resistance to multiple kinds of antimicrobials, she said. “The worst one we’ve seen was from an equine fecal sample in 2019, which had determinants conferring resistance to 11 different drug classes,” Goodman said. She also works with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control on One Health AMR initiatives to improve communication between veterinary and public health, including a new focus on equine medicine. Equine veterinarians can help fight AMR in a One Health approach by participating in building the federal database, she said. “Submitting samples for culture testing contributes to genomic epidemiology for the benefit of both animal and human health,” Goodman said.

The National Cutting Horse Association congratulates Thomas Bray of Fulshear, Texas, aboard Trash Talkin and Travis Jensen of Lodi, California, riding Princess N The Pea on their cochampionship in the Limited Open Classic at the 2022

NCHA Kit Kat Sugar Super Stakes each marking a score of 223. Trash Talkin, a 5-year-old gelding owned by Ken Hanson of Weatherford, Texas, and Bray were the fourth to work in the Limited Open Classic finals,

setting the stage with a big 223 early on in the 11 horse field. This pair had also tied for the highest score in the Limited Open Classic first-go two days prior with a 220. I just wanted to be clean and do the best I could,” said Bray in an interview following

He’s a really good horse.” The last horse in the one set finals to show was Princess N The Pea, a 5-year-old mare owned by Jeff Barnes of Wilton, California. Jensen and Princess N The Pea were able to match the 223 score marked earlier in the set to tie for the co-championship. “We cut the three cows that I wanted to cut, and it seemed like it just worked out,” said Jensen following his run. “I was lucky enough to get to show [Princess N The Pea] here, and it worked out for us.” With their co-championship, both Bray and Jensen earned $5,422.13 to add to their lifetime earnings now totaling $229.397.41 and $18,126.04, respectively. There's a lot to love about Temecula Valley from its many wineries to the breathtaking horseback riding trails that weave between them. A newly opened equestrian trail will help area riders safely avoid the busy De Portola Road, officials say. Nearly 60 area residents and horse-lovers showed up to celebrate the grand opening of the Temecula Valley Equestrian Trail in wine country, which opened to the public the first Saturday of March 2022. The trail allows for safer riding and driving through the area around the busy De Portola Road. The equestrian trail runs from Valle de Los Caballos to Oak Mountain Roads. It adds another safe and vibrant opportunity for area horsemen and women to experience the great outdoors on horseback. A connection between riders and the water district is essential in preserving the new trail and existing equestrian trails in Valle de Los Caballos, the Rancho California Horsemen Association says. Most importantly, for all concerned, the [new] trail gets horses away from the busy De Portola Road. "Riding along De Portola Road is dangerous," a spokesperson for Temecula Equine-Wine Riders wrote over Facebook. "This trail segment diverts riders from nearby vineyards to a safe horse crossing at the Renzoni, Fazeli, Sommerset Winery crossing or over to Galway Downs and the Vines to Valley trails."

Veterinary researchers have discovered a new molecule able to prevent COVID illness prior to exposure A nasal-spray treatment developed by a virologist at Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine may help prevent COVID illness in humans, as well as reduce severity of and mortality from post-infection. Photo ©BigStockPhoto.comA nasal-spray treatment developed by a virologist at Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine may help prevent COVID illness in humans, as well as reduce severity of and mortality from post-infection.

Working with experimental mice engineered with human receptors for the coronavirus on their cell surfaces, researchers have identified a new molecule (N-0385) they say inhibits entry of the virus into cells in the body. The molecule, Cornell reports, could be sprayed into people’s noses to prevent COVID illness prior to exposure and provide early treatment if administered soon after infection. Indeed, N-0385, which was developed at Cornell in collaboration with investigators at the Université de Sherbrooke in Canada, was shown to protect mice from infection prior to exposure, while also providing effective treatment when administered up to 12 hours after exposure. “There are very few, if any, small molecule antivirals that have been discovered that work prophylactically to prevent infection,” says the study’s senior author, Hector Aguilar-Carreno, PhD, MS, an associate professor of virology at Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Researchers introduced the molecule intranasally into the mice before, during, and/or after infection. Several clinical and pathological measurements were tracked, including weight, temperature, and mortality, as well as mouse tissue analysis to understand how well the mice responded. The therapy prevented the mice from losing weight prior to coronavirus exposure and from dying post infection, Cornell reports. “This [treatment] is the first of its kind,” Dr. Aguilar-Carreno says. “One advantage is it works early in the infection, even after someone has already acquired the virus.” The therapy has been tested in mice exposed to the first COVID strain detected in the U.S. in Washington state in 2020, as well as the Delta strain, Cornell reports. While it has not been tested on the Omicron variant, researchers are optimistic it will remain effective. California-based company EBVIA Therapeutics is currently raising funds for human trials, drug development, formulation, and mass production. If successful, the treatment could be submitted for United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) emergencyuse approval within six months, Cornell reports.

Magnum Chic Dream

is Newest NRHA Eight Million Dollar Sire

Less than a year after becoming a Seven Million Dollar Sire in the National Reining Horse Association, Magnum Chic Dream has passed another milestone. It was at the 2010 National Reining Breeders Classic that the stallion first joined the elite group of NRHA Million Dollar Sires, so it’s fitting that this latest accomplishment was achieved at the same event. Prior to the NRBC, held April 18 – 24 in Katy, Texas, Magnum Chic Dream, owned by Viola Scott, was less than $35,000 from $8,000,000 in offspring earnings. Throughout the week-long competition, Magnum Chic Dream progeny kept showing up in the results, and by the time the last run had been ran, the great stallion’s foals had won more than $70,000. Magnum Chic Dream, by Seven Million Dollar Sire Smart Chic Olena out of Sailin Barbee, was the eighth leading sire for the 2022 NRBC Classic and was fourth on the leaderboard for sires in the ancillary classes. Magnum Chic Dream’s leading foal at the NRBC was Onecoolchic (out of Skeets Red Dunit), who won the Classic Open Level 2 Championship and finished fourth in the Level 3 with Jimmy Van der Hoeven. All totaled, Onecoolchic earned $19,791 between the preliminary round and finals. Magnum Chic Dream, born in 1996, was bred by Guy A Du Ponchel. The colt was purchased as a two-year-old in training with Patti Brownshadel by Viola Scott, who was looking for a new non pro horse to compete on. The plan had originally been to geld him, but his good nature and willing 112

temperament kept that from ever happening. As the 20th century came to a close, Patti Brownshadel piloted him to the NRHA Futurity Open Level 2 and Level 3 Reserve Championships. The pair also placed in the Level 4 Finals. The next year the duo was the NRHA Derby Level 3 Co-Reserve Champions. In 2002, Viola Scott finally took the reins of her stallion, racking up wins in Non Pro classes over the next couple years. The stallion’s final recorded win was a big one when Casey Hinton showed him at the 2004 American Quarter Horse Association World Championship Show to win the Senior Reining title. Although Viola and her husband, Jack, had numerous offers on the stallion, she said she never thought twice about keeping him. Magnum Chic Dream’s first performing foal crop arrived in 2001, and as the stallion’s offspring excelled in the show pen, his popularity grew He has now sired numerous champions of the NRHA Futurity, Derby, and NRBC. Magnum Chic Dream’s Top Offspring (not including 2022 NRBC earnings): Chic Dreamin (Skeets Red Dunit) $242,272, Taris Dreamer (Taris San Cutter) $194,311, Msdreamy (A Gal With A Gun) $191,720, Mega Maggie Mae (Cinco De Mega) $185,138, Made By Magnum(Ready Make Cowboy) $176,484, Chics Dream (First Ex Flame) $170,047 Lil Magnum Jessie (Lil Ruf Jessie) $166,274, Mr Farenheit (Wimpy Little Girl) $159,845, Chicsdundreamin (Goody Goody Dun Drop) $154,964, Magnum Starlights (Starlights Sugarwhiz) $144,800
