6666 Ranch in Texas closes to gro The Four Sixes Ranch, located about 200 miles from Fort Worth, sold for $192.2 million Friday. Legendary 6666 Ranch was put on the market for the first time in its history in 2020. The Four Sixes Ranch, or 6666 Ranch, is officially under new ownership. According to the Fort Worth StarTelegram Taylor Sheridan, who writes, produces and acts in the hit show “Yellowstone,” is at the helm of the group who made the purchase. The Four Sixes Ranch is comprised of 6666 Ranch in Guthrie,
which is roughly 142,372 acres, Dixon Creek Ranch in Carson and Hutchinson Counties, which is approximately 114,455 acres and Frisco Creek Ranch in Sherman County, which is estimated to be 9,428 acres. When the ranches were first listed — they came with a combined asking price of $341 million. Forth Worth Star-Telegram reported that the ranch was sold for $192.2 million on Friday. The Fort Worth Business Press also confirmed the news stating “the sale was made to a group led by screenwriter/producer Taylor Sheridan, who grew up in Texas and graduated from R.L. Paschal High School in Fort Worth.” The Four Sixes Ranch has been featured heavily in the last season of “Yellowstone,” which stars Kevin Costner, among others. A description of the ranch on listing agent Sam Middleton’s website states that former ranch owner Anne Marion “felt a strong responsibility towards the improvement of the land and water resources. She had a love for the land and ranching was in her blood. During her tenure, the 6666 Ranches attained a national reputation for fine quarter horses and quality cattle.” The Four Sixes Ranch, located about 200 miles from Fort Worth, sold for $192.2 million Friday. The ranch, which contains over 142,000 acres, was reportedly purchased by a group led by ”Yellowstone” producer Taylor Sheridan. Sam Middleton, the owner of Chas S. oup led by ‘Yellowstone’ co-creator confirmed the sale, but said he was unable to comment on any further details regarding the purchase. The Fort Worth Report, citing several anonymous sources, reported the land was sold to “a group led by screenwriter/producer Taylor Sheridan.” Sheridan, a North Texas native who graduated from Fort Worth’s Paschal High School, debuted the “Yellowstone” prequel streaming show ”1883” in mid-December, which was filmed around the Fort Worth area. The director is expected to create a new spinoff, ”6666,” after the Four Sixes Ranch appeared in season four of “Yellowstone.” “Founded when Comanches still ruled West Texas, no ranch in America is more steeped in the history of the West than the 6666,” an IMDb summary of the show said. “Still operating as it did two centuries before, and encompassing an entire county, the 6666 is where the rule of law and the laws of nature merge in a place where the most dangerous thing one does is the next thing. The 6666 is synonymous with the merciless endeavor to raise the finest horses and livestock in the world, and ultimately where world class cowboys are born and made.” The physical property was founded in 1870 by Samuel Burk Burnett and was passed down throughout multiple generations of the family. Burnett’s great-granddaughter, Anne Burnett Marion, died in February 2020 and the “terms of her will dictated all of her ranching operations would be sold,” the broker’s website said. It was the first time the ranch has been sold. The massive, historic Texas ranch where the new Yellowstone spinoff Yellowstone: 6666 is filming has sold for just under $200 million, and pictures show a property that is truly part of Texas history. The 6666 Ranch — better-known as the Four Sixes Ranch — in Guthrie, Texas, dates back to 1870. The ranch centers around a 13-bedroom, 13-bathroom, 13,280-square-foot main residence, which is constructed of quarry rock that was hauled to Guthrie by wagon. The ranch also includes vast, sweeping fenced pastures, farmland, fenced-in pens for cattle, a more recent addition for horses, a water filtration plant that serves the ranch’s water needs and more. There are separate camp manager’s homes in both the North Camp and the South Camp of the ranch, which encompasses nearly 225 square miles of land. Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan is part of a group of investors who recently acquired the property for $192 million, and he has been shooting his new show out there in recent months. Who is John Katz the CEO of Teton Ridge? Jonathan Katz Leaving Scripps To Start New Business Venture By Jon Lafayette Courtesy of Broadcasting & Cable
Exec sold Katz Networks for $302 million in 2017
Jonathan Katz, who launched Bounce TV, rebooted Court TV and sold his digital over-the-air startup to E.W. Scripps, has resigned from Scripps to start a new company. Katz Networks has been a pioneer in starting digital over-the-air networks, and when Scripps paid $302 million million for the company in 2017, that signaled that it was a serious business. Last year Katz Networks generated $257.5 million in revenue, up 13.4%. Along with Ion Media, purchased by Scripps this year, the Katz Networks are now part of Scripps Networks, the TVstation owner’s new national networks division.
Scripps is not the only broadcaster looking to profit from their secondary digital channels. For example, Sinclair Broadcast Group has Comet, Charge and TBD and Tegna bought Quest and Justice for $77 million in 2019 and launched Twist in January. Katz told Broadcasting+Cable he’s leaving Scripps to return to being an entrepreneur. “I do plan on creating a new company and just like the Katz Networks, that new company will start with the consumer,” he said. “It’s a lesson that I have certainly learned that success and scale are always driven by delighting consumers and serving their

Sylvester Stallone to Star
in Paramount Plus Series ‘Kansas City’ From Taylor Sheridan & Terence Winter In case you were worried that Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan wouldn’t have enough to keep him busy, you can relax. In addition to the mega-hit ranching drama, the newly-launched Jeremy Renner-fronted Mayor of Kingstown, the Yellowstone prequel series 1883 which is set to debut this month, and a still in-theworks Yellowstone spin-off set on the 6666 ranch, Sheridan has yet another show in the pipeline, and this one has a very unexpected star. According to Deadline, Sylvester Stallone is currently in talks to play the lead in (as well as executive produce) a new Paramount+
Terence Winter, Sylvester Stallone & Taylor Sheridan of “Kansas City”
series titled Kansas City. Stallone, who is perhaps best known for his Academy Award-winning 1977 film Rocky as well as a string of fan-favorite action movies, would play a modern-day Italian mobster from New York City who is forced to relocate to Kansas City, Missouri to reestablish the mob’s presence in the city. Sylvester Stallone is set to star in the new drama series at Paramount Plus from Taylor Sheridan and Terence Winter, Variety has learned. The series, set in present day, follows legendary New York City mobster Sal (Stallone), who is faced with the startling task of reestablishing his Italian mafia family to the modernized, straightshooting town of Kansas City, Missouri. There, Sal encounters surprising and unsuspecting characters who follow him along his unconventional path to power. Both Sheridan and Winter will writer and executive produce “Kansas City,” with Winter serving as showrunner. A writers’ room is currently ongoing. Stallone will executive produce in addition to starring, with David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle and Bob Yari of 101 Studios also executive producing. MTV Entertainment Studios will also produce. Along with Sheridan, the show is reportedly being developed by Terence Winter, known for his work on HBO hits The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire, who will serve as showrunner. David C. Glasser, CEO of 101 Studios, which also produces Sheridan’s other series, told Deadline, “Taylor is a prolific creator because of the multi-dimensional characters he creates and the complex worlds he builds. To be able to have the legendary, transcendent Sylvester playing one of these characters is truly a privilege. And on top of that, we have Terence producing the project with us, who is responsible for some of the most captivating, deeply respected television shows in history. We are thrilled that ViacomCBS has partnered with us to help tell this story.” Though no timeline has been announced for when we might see more of Kansas City, considering that the upcoming 1883 started filming a scant three months before its December 19 premiere, anything is possible. 28

NRCHA Joins The Run for A Million in 2022
This August 17-20, in Las Vegas, Nevada, The Run For A Million turns up the reined cow horse heat to not only include the open Cow Horse Challenge but also showcase the roots of reined cow horse with a Cowboy Invitational. “The cow horse was a fan-favorite at The Run For A Million in 2021,” said Taylor Sheridan, producer of The Run For A Million. “In 2022 we’ll be doubling down on cow horse, bringing you the very best NRCHA bridle horses and professionals in the Cow Horse Challenge, and some of the best hands from America’s biggest ranches in the Cowboy Invitational.”
For the 2022 Cow Horse Challenge, which is expected to boast at least equal added money to the 2021 event, riders will have the opportunity to qualify at one of two qualifiers NRCHA will host on behalf of The Run For A Million. These qualifiers will be run concurrently with the Open Bridle classes at the Teton Ridge Stallion Stakes in Las Vegas, Nevada, in March and the DT Horses Western Derby in Scottsdale, Arizona, in June. The qualifier events will be an add-on to the Open Bridle and will have a $1,000 entry fee with $5,000 added money from The Run For A Million at each. The top 8 riders at each event will earn an invitation to The Run For A Million Cow Horse Challenge, plus a custom qualifier knife from Gist Silversmiths, an NRCHA Corporate Partner, courtesy of The Run For A Million. At these events it is the rider who earns the qualification, not the horse. Each rider can qualify only once, and does not need to show at The Run For A Million on the same horse they rode to qualify. NRCHA will announce the rider’s picks prior to the event through its social media channels.
In August, cowboys will be coming to town with the Cowboy Invitational at The Run For A Million. Using the NRCHA Cowboy Class format, the competitors in the invitational will complete a traditional reining and cow work run, and then will come back for a second turn in the arena for steer stopping. “Reined cow horse grew into a competitive sport from the traditional Vaquero way of training a horse to work cattle on a ranch,” said Anna Morrison, NRCHA executive director. “The connection between our sport and the ranching traditions we grew from is alive and well. This is where we started, and this event will more than showcase how rooted cow horse still is in ranch life.” Before riding for the $25,000 in added money at The Run For A Million in Las Vegas, cowboys from some of the country’s most historic ranches will be invited to a Cowboy Clinic to freshen up their skills. The following historic ranches are among those that have been invited to send cowboys for the inaugural event. Keep and eye on NRCHA.com for updates on who will throw their hat in the ring in Las Vegas! The ranches already invited; 6666 Ranch (Guthrie, TX), Bogle Ltd. (Dexter, NM), San Lucas Ranch (Santa Ynez, CA), Singleton Ranches (Lamy, NM), Stuart Ranch (Caddo, OK), Tongue River Ranch (Dumont, TX), Wagonhound Land & Livestock (Douglas, WY), Waggoner Ranch (Vernon, TX). The NRCHA is excited to support The Run For A Million as the sanctioning body and partner for the reined cow horse portions of the competition. At the event, the NRCHA will host autograph sessions with the 16 qualified Cow Horse Challenge riders and the Cowboy Invitational riders, where event attendees can get to know reined cow horse’s brightest stars and connect with our ranching roots.

AQHA Versatility
Ranch Horse Competition
The Versatility Ranch Horse competition promotes the athletic ability and versatility of the American Quarter Horse as demonstrated in six classes – ranch riding, ranch trail, ranch reining, ranch cow work, ranch cutting and ranch conformation. There are divisions for open, amateur, cowboy and youth. .
The Classes
Ranch Riding – For ranch riding classes, horses show individually, and the class can be conducted inside or outside an arena. In this class, judges are looking for relaxed, responsive horses with soft and cadenced gaits. The horse should make timely transitions in a smooth and correct manner, plus the horse should be soft in the bridle and yield to contact. Ranch Trail – Obstacles found in a ranch trail pattern are approximate to those found during the course of everyday work. Judges are looking for a well-trained, responsive and wellmannered horse that can correctly navigate and negotiate the course, and to do so in a correct and efficient manner. Ranch Reining – Ranch reining measures the ability of the stock horse to perform basic handling maneuvers. This class can be held with or separate from the ranch cow work class; if the two are held together, they are still scored and placed as individual classes. Ranch Cow Work – When it comes to the ranch cow work class, riders have the choice between ranch cow work or limited ranch cow work for youth and amateur exhibitors, where riders are allotted one minute and thirty seconds to complete the work. For ranch cow work, there are three parts to the class: boxing, fence work and roping or circling. The horse and rider must accomplish all three parts in three minutes. Ranch Cutting – This class is judged on the ability of the horse to work a cow by separating it from the herd and holding it to demonstrate the horse’s ability to work the cow. A single cow is cut from the herd and the horse must demonstrate its ability to work the cow. Exhibitors have a two-minute limit. Ranch Conformation – To be eligible to compete in the ranch conformation class, the horse must be shown in at least one class one of the other categories the day of the show. Judges are looking for balanced, structurally correct horses with adequate muscling. .
The Divisions
Open – Anyone with a current AQHA or AQHYA membership is eligible to show an American Quarter Horse in open competition. Amateur – American Quarter Horse owners who do not join the professional ranks may enjoy a full spectrum of competition in the amateur division. Youth – Exhibitors 18 years of age or younger (age as of January 1) may show in this division. Cowboy – The cowboy division is for working ranch cowboys. The rider of the horse must either be an owner, family member or full time employee of the ranch that owns the horse. Employees must have been employed for a minimum of 90 days prior to competing in the ranch horse competition. The rider must have less than $15,000 per association lifetime earnings in any of the following: NRHA, NCHA, NRHA, ACHA, RHAA, ASHA, NRSHA or SHTX or less than 25 AQHA or American Paint Horse Association open points in reining, working cow horse or Versatility Ranch Horse within the previous 10 years. No exhibitor can have earned more than $15,000 in any individual association.

Performance Horse Sale -
Looking for your next rope or cow horse? Jason and Nikki Hershberger will be holding their 17th Annual Performance Horse Sale on Friday March 4 in the Equidome at WestWorld. Sun Circuit is thrilled to have this prestigious sale as the first event. The sale preview start at 2:00 PM on Thursday afternoon with a jackpot roping. Friday the preview will start at 9:00 AM and the sale begins at 1:00PM. “We feel so fortunate to be able to kick off Sun Circuit and the ARHFA,” says Jason Hershberger. “WestWorld is the best facility in the U.S. and it is right here in our back yard. It is a wonderful opportunity for us to present top quality horses to both the roping community and to the AQHA show community.” While the sale is know to cater to ropers, buyers will find great horses for other disciplines as well. Jason adds, “We will have cow horse prospects and reiners too. There are also super broke horses that would do well in Ranch Riding. A lot of these rope horses are so versatile anymore. They have also been shown in reining or cow horse, so they have the skills to transition over to Ranch Riding really well.” Hershberger is proud that the sale has a reputation for quality stock. He continues, “We know that our consignors are bringing the very best that they have. They are often getting horses a year or two out specifically to get them ready for this sale. So

buyers can feel confident that these consignors have had the horses in their program, they know everything about the horse. That’s what I like about the sale. Everybody expects to see a good selection of high quality horses.” Hershberger is also focused on matching the suitability of each horse for the individual rider. The extensive sale preview gives people the opportunity to see exactly what they are bidding on. There is a jackpot roping Thursday at 2:00 for sale horses. On Friday morning they start at 9 by previewing all the horses in what ever discipline they show in. Buyers can talk to the consignors and see the horses in the pens. He adds, “The nice thing about WestWorld is that buyers can take the horses out into the arenas and ride them enough to get a really good feel for them. It’s also nice that there are veterinary services right on sight if people want to have a horse checked out.” Hershberger will be offering a bonus again this year for the high placing horse in the ARHFA Sun Circuit Futurity who was purchased at the sale. Jason says, “There are plenty of futurity age horses this year in the sale that are plenty capable of entering the next day. I’ve got a couple from my program that if the buyer asked me to show them in the ARHF Friday, I’ld say heck yeah. And there are plenty of other top pros who will be there who would catch ride a sale horse in a heart beat. They know they are getting on a good horse.” Additionally, the ARHFA has agreed to enter any horses that are purchased in the Hershberger sale without a late fee. 2022 Scottsdale Arizona Sun Circuit March 5 -13th By Kristen Spinning
The 49th Annual Scottsdale Arizona Sun Circuit takes over WestWorld Equestrian Center March 5 through 13 with an even more robust array of classes, awards and events. Even though it is one of the largest American Quarter Horse shows in the country, and the second largest event held at WestWorld, Sun Circuit never stops innovating. One set of new exhibitor awards is creating quite a buzz. A Sun Circuit logo’d EZ Go Golf Cart will be awarded to the exhibitor who earns the most points in each of 5 different disciplines: Ranch, Working Cow Horse, Western Pleasure, Hunter Under Saddle and Reining. All horses shown by the exhibitor will accumulate points toward the award. Exhibitors may show as many horses as AQHA rules permit in each class. Additionally, a golf cart will be awarded to the champion of the $2,000 added 4 & 5 year old Machine Made Open Trail Futurity. All these golf cart winners will be proudly utilizing these awards for many years to come.
Exhibitors are also getting excited about the opportunity to earn cash while showing in Trail, Reining and Ranch Riding classes with Sun Circuit’s 2D Jackpots. There are multiple opportunities to win big for a small investment with $19,000 in added money, plus 100% payback. Jackpots run concurrent with AQHA classes, but if exhibitors want in on the Jackpot, they must enter it in the show office. It’s so easy to play it begs the question…you’re already riding the class, so why not add a little fun and thrill to it? Other new offerings bring more added money and exciting competition. The $7,500 Added Nothin But Nett 5 and Under Maiden Western Riding Stakes will certainly debut a fine field of horses on the pattern. There will also be 4 Super Sires Stakes classes with $2,500 added to each: L1 Green Jr Western Riding, L1 Green Sr Western Riding, 4 & 5 Year Old Open Trail and Senior Trail. NSBA and West Coast Breeders Futurities in Pleasure and Hunter Under Saddle are also on the schedule. While experienced exhibitors never want to miss a Sun Circuit, it is important to note that there truly is something for everyone at every level at this show, including those just starting their riding career. Sun Circuit has added new walk/trot amateur and youth classes with their own All Around buckle awards. Amateurs can now enter walk trot Pleasure, Horsemanship, Trail, Hunter Under Saddle, Hunt Seat Equitation, Ranch on Rail, Am. Ranch Trail and Ranch Riding. New youth walk trot classes include Pleasure, Horsemanship,Trail, Hunter Under Saddle, Equitation, Ranch on Rail, Ranch Trail and Ranch Riding. Sun Circuit is also the place amateurs can get their less experienced horses into the arena in pattern classes, yet do so on a level playing field. New classes for Non Pro Green Horse 34
Horsemanship and Non Pro Green Horse Showmanship are being offered. To be eligible, the horse must not have more than 25 lifetime points in the respective event as of Jan. 1, 2022. A returning favorite for amateur and select exhibitors is the National Championships in Horsemanship, Equitation and Showmanship. The tournament style competitions allow any of the top 64 nationally ranked exhibitors to show in the Championship concurrently with the corresponding AQHA classes to the first set of judges where the high scoring 16 will be recognized and move on. Those 16 are further whittled down to 8, then 4 through their placings under the next two sets of judges. The Four in each class and division will receive an embroidered black leather bomber jacket. They return to the arena in the tournament finals for head to head match ups. The wildly popular format draws large cheering crowds to see who will be presented a National Championship trophy buckle. Final 2021 year end rankings lists will be announced shortly. Eligible exhibitors must enter the National Championships in the show office, but there is no additional fee to participate. Another returning favorite can be found in the Ranch classes. Farnam is kicking in $5,000 to the pot for the ever popular L1 Open Ranch Horse Stakes again this year. Past years have showcased many of the future top ranch horses in the nation in this L1 showdown, so it will be intriguing to see this year’s presentations in Ranch Trail, Ranch Riding, Ranch on Rail and Halter. Youth Ranch classes are seeing a big boost of support and awards in 2022. One Fine Vintage and Robertson Ranches is sponsoring a Bobs Custom Saddle award to the High Point 14-18 Youth Ranch champion, combining scores of one horse/one rider in Ranch Trail, Ranch Riding and Ranch on the Rail. And since starting young is important, Kimes Ranch is sponsoring High Point awards in 10 & Under Walk Trot Ranch, 11 & Under Ranch and 13 & Under. On the cattle side of this incredibly diverse show, the ARHFA Sun Circuit Rope Horse Futurity returns with $30,000 in added money. There are open, intermediate, limited and non pro divisions. There are also Junior, Senior, Amateur and Boxing Spectaculars which combine points from Cutting and Cowhorse to determine the champion. Anyone who wants to prove they’ve truly got cow will be entering the AZ Golden Cowboy. With $5,000 added and a great line up of prizes…not to mention the bragging rights…this is always a fun event to follow. Scores are tallied from Golden Cowboy Herd work, Muley Steer Stopping and Jr. or Sr. Cow Horse. Sun Circuit isn’t just about competition though. There is plenty of fun going on around the arenas with Prize Patrol giving away thousands of dollars worth of electronics, along with hats, boots,

By Kristen Spinning If you are already riding in the class….why not ride for CASH? There are now Jackpots in Reining, Ranch Riding and Trail at Sun Circuit held March 5-13 in Scottsdale. The 2D Jackpots will run concurrently with just one day of each of the following classes so be sure to check the schedule: junior, senior amateur and select Reining, junior, senior, L1 amateur, amateur and select Ranch Riding and junior, senior amateur and select Trail.
There is either $1,000 or $2,000 in added money for each class, plus 100% payback of Jackpot entry fees. A 2D Jackpot class consist of a 1D and 2D division. When you enter the 2D Jackpot for a class, you are eligible for the 1D payout or the 2D payout. That means means you have multiple opportunities to win even if you do not place first in the class. You may end up 5th overall, but be first in the 2D division and win some cash. The Jackpot entry is a small investment for big fun. All added money and entry fees will be divided equally between the 1D and 2D divisions. Each division pays three places to the highest composite scoring horses entered in that jackpot class. The 1D pays out to the top 3 scores and the 2D payout begins at the half way point of the total number of horses entered in that Jackpot class. The following are some examples of how the payout structure works. Example 1: There are 6 total horses entered in a 2D Jackpot class. The three high composite scores will receive the payout for the 1D portion of the class. The 2D payout will begin with 4th high composite score and the 4th, 5th and 6th high composite scores will receive the payout of the 2D portion of the class. Example 2 : 16 horses are entered in the 2D jackpot class. The 1D payout is paid to the three high composite scores in the class and the 1D division consists of the top 8 horses (including all ties). The 2D payout begins with the 9th place horse, aka the first horse in the second half of all the jackpotted horses, then also pays the 10th & 11th places. Example 3: 17 horses are entered in a 2D jackpot class. The 1D payout is paid to the three high composite scores in the top half of the class, again the top 8 horses including all ties. The 2D payout begins with the first horse in the bottom half of the total number of entries in the 2D Jackpot class, but being an odd number of entries, it is rounded up. Therefore the 2D payout begins with the composite score of the 9th horse. Ties: Total Payout will be split amongst tied horses. There is a minimum of three places paid. Examples: If five horses score a 143, the total purse will be split equally among all five horses. If two horses score a 143, 1st and 2nd money will be totaled, then split evenly between the two tied horses. If 3rd place had three tied horses. Third place money will be split evenly among the tied horses. Enter Jackpots At The Show If you want in on the 2D Jackpots in Reining, Ranch Riding or Trail, be sure to enter the jackpot for your class in the show office! You must pay the specified jackpot entry fee by 5 pm the day prior to the class. Class will run concurrent with the respective AQHA Class—you are not entering s separate class. to interview Casey Deary, Tim Smith, Chris and Sara Dawson, Corey Cushing, and Barbra Schulte. Each provided interesting insights into their careers, training philosophies, pearls of wisdom, and even some embarrassing stories. All these Facebook Lives can be viewed on my Facebook page. We will continue these events into 2022 and look forward to interviewing more outstanding horsemen and women. Team AD, my online mentoring/accreditation program, is going strong. I have three riders about ready to graduate from the program…not an easy feat! And don’t forget AD Tack. This is the full line of tack and
2021 was an unusual year in many aspects. COVID had an impact on many and we lost several of our dear friends because of it. Many of our close friends from Canada, such as Lorne and Dylan Oswald and Dave and Brenda Batty, have not been able to travel to the United States because of travel restrictions. Now, with the addition of the variant, we don’t really know what the future holds for the health protocols but we hope things change soon.
Many new major players came are coming into the horse industry and shaking things up. Teton Ridge, owned by Thomas Tull, has partnered with several of the top trainers, adding them to the Teton Ridge Team. With that, he has purchased the American Rodeo, an interest in Western Bloodstock, and several big-name horses and top prospects. Television Hit “Yellowstone” and “1883” Producer Taylor Sheridan continues bolstering the industry by the Run For A Million Reining and sponsoring other premier events. The major horse sales in 2021 were the highest in history. Records were set for all ages of horses. The horse industry is alive and well! 2021 was a big “hauling year” for Al Dunning Training Stable. We traveled all over the Western United States showing – Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Texas. We had success, fun, and made new friends while we made sure to enjoy the various destinations with activities like white water rafting, golfing, and plenty of great meals! All six of our haulers ended the year in the NCHA Top 20 and three qualified for the World Finals. In June, I judged the NRCHA Western Derby here in Scottsdale. It was an honor judging with a remarkable group of horsemen who are also my friends. This was one of the most talented groups of horses I’ve seen in many years. Big congratulations to Corey Cushing and Hesa Dual Bet for winning the Derby! I look forward to the Derby returning to Scottsdale in June. Becky and I were able to spend time at our cabin in Spirit Lake, Iowa this past summer. It’s a great time for unwinding, golfing, fishing, and antiquing, and enjoying a slower pace. Becky’s grandparents built this cabin in 1934 and it holds a very special place in our hearts. In August, I traveled to Las Vegas for the Run For A Million reining event. Taylor Sheridan, Bob Avila, Francesca Sternberg and I did the online commentary for the show. The atmosphere at this show was wild and crazy. People come from all over to cheer on their favorite horses and competitors. During very rare moments with a little downtime at the ranch, I hosted Facebook Live events throughout the year. I was able 36
equipment I use on a daily basis, both at home and at shows. You can find everything at www.aldunning.com. This year was a special year, as Becky and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary on December 10th! We have a tradition of winter vacationing in Hawaii after Becky and I spent our honeymoon in Maui. This year the Dunning/Merrill/ Al Dunning Parkinson/Miller biennial Hawaiian vacation was December 19th-30th. We went to one of our favorite spots: Poipu Beach on Kauai. With Frank and Robin Merrill, McKenzie Merrill, Tyler and Katy Merrill and their 2 boys, Matt and Megan Miller and their 2 girls, my daughter McKenzie and her husband Shadd Parkinson with my 2 granddaughters, and my son Grady Dunning, Becky and I made another great memory. Between golfing, hiking, playing numerous games, the little girls surfing, beach time, pickleball, and some delicious eats, we stayed busy and had loads of fun. I returned home to a great surprise… my new 2022 Chevy Dually truck had been delivered! I had ordered it way back in August. There are so many bells and whistles that I haven’t figured everything out yet. But I can tell you it pulls our trailer like a champion! 2021 was a tremendous year and we look forward more wonderful things in 2022. Ride well and be happy, Al Dunning

Buffalo Soldiers: The History Behind the African-American Regiments

The brave men of the 9th and 10th Cavalry regiments and the horses they rode helped shape the nation.
Note: The following educational material originally appeared as a Buffalo Soldiers”temporary exhibit at the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum in Amarillo, Texas. Following the United States Civil War, regiments of AfricanAmerican men known as Buffalo Soldiers served on the western frontier, protecting settlers and building the infrastructure needed for new settlements to flourish. The Buffalo Soldiers included two regiments of all-black mounted cavalry, the 9th and 10th, formed after Congress passed legislation in 1866 that allowed African Americans to enlist in the country’s regular peacetime military. Many of the men in these regiments were among the approximately 180,000 African-Americans who served in the Union Army during the Civil War.

These soldiers fought in over a hundred significant military engagements as America pushed ever westward, earning the nickname that symbolized their fighting bravery and fierceness: Buffalo Soldiers. For more than two decades in the late 19th century, the 9th and 10th cavalries engaged in military campaigns across the Plains and the Southwest. The Buffalo Soldiers also captured horse and cattle thieves, built roads and protected the U.S. mail, stagecoaches and wagon trains. In addition to protecting frontier settlements, all Buffalo Soldier regiments surveyed and mapped the vast Texas plains, built and repaired dozens of forts, strung thousands of miles of telegraph lines, and escorted countless railroad trains and cattle herds across the southwest. From the back of a horse, they participated in the Indian campaigns in the West, fought with Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders in the Spanish American War, enforced the neutrality laws along the Mexican border, saw four tours of duty in the 40

Buffalo Soldiers even acted as rangers in Yosemite and Sequoia national parks. When the United States entered World War I, many of the noncommissioned officers received commissions and several hundred troopers joined new units preparing to fight in Europe. In peacetime America, 1920 to 1941, the Buffalo Soldiers fulfilled their duties as service troops for the cavalry school at Fort Riley, Kan., becoming expert horse and marksmanship units. In 1948, President Harry Truman issued an executive order eliminating racial segregation and discrimination in America’s armed forces; the last all-black units were disbanded during the first half of the 1950s.
The U.S. Cavalry preferred solid colored horses, including grays, and the horses would be of the same color for each unit. This helped the commanding officers identify troopers under their command during the confusion of battle. By the end of 1939, the United States Cavalry consisted of two mechanized and twelve horse regiments of 790 horses each. A cavalry division included two brigades of two horse regiments each, 18 light tanks and a field artillery regiment. Cavalry had been the preferred force for the defense of the Mexican border and the Panama Canal Zone from Mexican raiders, and enemy landing, a threat that was becoming obsolete in the 1930s. A fleet of horse trailers called portees assisted cavalry in traversing the roads. Once mounted, cavalrymen would reach the battlefield on horseback, dismount and then fight on foot, essentially acting as mobile light infantry. The U.S. Cavalry preferred solid colored horses, including grays, and the horses would be of the same color for each unit. This helped the commanding officers identify troopers under their command during the confusion of battle. Each horse was thoroughly trained before being assigned to a trooper who was

responsible for the care and well-being of his mount. Other remount horses would be kept at the post to replace losses. Most of the mounts used by the U.S. Cavalry were Quartertype horses. These horses were very hardy and quick, and were powerful for the charge. Closing in 1948, Fort Robinson, Nebraska was the last cavalry remount depot operated by the U.S. Army. Being daredevils, the men of the 10th Cavalry often challenged each other in various unofficial horse competitions. One favorite ‘sport’ was riding two, three, or even four horses at once, standing with their legs on the outside horses. Horse shows were held several times a month when the 10th Cavalry was at Fort Huachuca, and were considered both training and sporting events. Winners of these competitions could not compete using the same mount in the same judging class during the remainder of the training year. This kept the competitions more interesting and made the outcome more reliant on the man rather than the mount.

American soldiers were the primary component of this fence, and the construction project was to establish or to upgrade border military posts to protect the soldiers against the elements and to protect U.S. citizens and economic interests. The plan for the camp in Naco included construction of 35 adobe buildings by the 10th Cavalry. The beginning of the Mexican Revolution in 1910 raised concerns that rebel activity would spill over onto American soil and in response to this potential threat, the U.S. government sent

Courtesy of National Archives Many different types and sizes of horse were used in war, depending on the form of warfare. The type used varied with whether the horse was being ridden or driven, and whether they were being used for reconnaissance, cavalry charges, communication or supply. Throughout history, horses played a crucial role in providing support to armies in the field. A war horse used as a riding animal was trained to be controlled with limited use of reins, responding primarily to the rider’s legs and weight. The horse became accustomed to any necessary tack, and learned to balance under a rider who would be laden with weapons. Developing the balance and agility of the horse was crucial. Training was also required to overcome the horse’s natural instinct to flee from the noise, smell and confusion of combat. They also learned to accept any sudden or unusual movements of humans while using a weapon or avoiding one. The Army had a particular standard for the physical attributes that qualified a horse as a Cavalry or Artillery animal and that men were trained to screen horses of a reasonably mature age. The Cavalry was concerned about bringing the horses to a certain level of fitness, keeping them healthy and sound and making them the most useful for their appointed tasks. The Army purchased horses that were old enough to begin work. Prior to Congress establishing the Remount Service in 1908, the Quartermaster Department secured horses through a bid process which proved somewhat unsuccessful. Troopers frequently were very attached to their mounts and the Cavalry understood the value of humane treatment of the animals. troops to protect the border. Naco had a military presence from 1911 until the end of 1923. While the War Department stationed elements of many units in Naco, the primary presence was the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments, and later the 25th Infantry Regiment, all Buffalo Soldier units. The 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments were commended for their service during the Battle of Naco in 1914, receiving a special commendation from the United States President for their exceptional service in preserving the Neutrality Laws, despite being under almost constant threat of gunfire. In 1922, the 25th Infantry Regiment took over for the 10th as guardians of the border until closure of the station in December 1923. ‘Jockey,’ filmed at Turf Paradise in Phoenix, is a winning debut for director Clint Bentley
Kwedar), and you might.
“Jockey,” Clint Bentley’s debut feature as a director, is a delightful subversion of the typical sports movie. It’s an assured film featuring outstanding performances, which of course helps a lot. At times you feel as if you know where the story is heading (Bentley cowrote the script with Greg
But if what happens along the way is engaging enough, that doesn’t really matter. That’s how it is with “Jockey,” which doesn’t shy away from occasional sports-movie cliches but also doesn’t become trapped by them. Winning and losing are not as important as getting in the game and giving it what you’ve got, no matter the cost. The cost has been steep for Jackson Silva (Clifton Collins Jr.), an aging jockey with a lot of wins and seemingly more injuries. He’s broken down and slipping, he knows. But he’s good at riding horses. Really good. He knows them, understands them, and knows how to win. He figures he has at least a couple more seasons left in him; a disinterested observer would think otherwise. Jackson also wants to hold on because of Ruth Wilkes (Molly Parker), the trainer he’s worked with for years and with whom he has become close. We glean from their conversations that they’ve never quite reached the heights they’d hoped for, a step or two down from the top and mired in place. Then they get a horse that looks like the real deal — the kind of horse he never thought he’d get to ride, Jackson tells Ruth. Carrying a few extra pounds (in the jockey world, at least, where ounces mean seconds), he begins to work out and maybe smoke a little less. Or not. This is when Gabriel Boullait (Moises Arias) comes into Jackson’s life. He’s young, wants to be a jockey and is willing to clean stables and do whatever else it takes to make it, riding whenever he gets the chance. Jackson has seen him at other tracks. (“Jockey” was shot in Phoenix, although with the exception of a few glorious sunsets, if you’re not familiar with Turf Paradise it could be any city with palm trees.) When they talk, Gabriel drops the bombshell: He’s Jackson’s son from a previous, ill-fated relationship. Jackson denies it, resents it and wonders if it’s true. The development of their relationship is at the heart of the film, as Jackson offers tips, training 44
techniques. He sees promise in Gabriel (“I hear you have light hands,” Ruth tells him, obviously after Jackson has told her so). A big race is coming up, and complications arise. The story needs the developments to advance, but you might be just as happy spending time hanging around the characters. There is one remarkable scene Clint Bentley in which the jockeys are sitting around talking about their injuries (Bentley uses a lot of non-actors in the film), grouped in a circle in what would sound like a game of oneupmanship if they weren’t so matter of fact about it. Broken backs seem chillingly common. They break their noses the way most people stub their toes. At one point Jackson asks Gabriel if he’s ever “really” been hurt. Garbriel ticks off a list of broken bones and

other painful injuries. Collins is so wonderfully genuine, so believable as someone who has seen a lot of stories like this play out and has a pretty good idea how this one ends, but wants to hang onto the reins for as long as he can anyway. Parker brings a slow-burn intensity to Ruth, balancing a lot of emotions as she tries to help her friend while ensuring the best outcomes for everyone. And Arias successfully inhabits a young man trying to figure out his life and his place in everyone else’s. But it’s Bentley who’s always in control. He frames shots beautifully (cinematographer Adolpho Veloso hits all the right notes) and creatively. He shoots

How one tiny horse at Turf Paradise
came to lead all of North America in victories
It’s unusual for someone to call his own idea degenerate. But Rob Rosette figured the best way to get his trainer, Robertino Diodoro, to sign off on the whimsical idea of spending $3,500 to claim a diminutive 4-year-old gelding running at Turf Paradise was to admit upfront that it didn’t make much sense.

“Hey, I want to do something really degenerate, if you don’t mind,” Rosette told Diodoro almost a year ago. Diodoro burst out laughing. “What are you going to do? Tell me,” Diodoro said. “There is this horse,” Rosette began. A lot of horse-racing dreams begin, and end, with the above sentence. But Rosette’s dream came true. Make that present tense: is coming true. Rosette claimed the horse, Shinny, for $3,500. All Shinny did in return was win 12 races in 2021, more than any other horse in North America, and about $140,000. Not bad for a “degenerate” idea and an initial $3,500 investment. “Look at him, how tiny he is,” Rosette said then, pointing to Shinny. “He cracks me up, man.” Two stalls down from Shinny was Tiger Dad, which Rosette claimed for $50,000 last summer in Del Mar, Calif. In his first start for Rosette, Tiger Dad won a $60,000 stakes race at Turf Paradise. He’s the biggest horse in the barn, but not the most important. If not for the little horse two doors down, Rosette would not have claimed Tiger Dad, or bought a 2-year-old filly now training at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark. He paid for them with house money won by Shinny. Those horses dwarf Shinny in size, but not in accomplishments and not in the hearts of those who are around Shinny every day. “That’s the horse I look forward to riding every day,” said Isaiah Ortiz, an assistant trainer and exercise rider. “He’s just a joy to be on. He does everything you ask him to. Everyone knows who he is. I’ll be riding by people and they’re like, ‘that’s Shinny.’ Yep, that’s Shinny.” Outside tracks and winners circles, Shinny looks more like a horse that should be leading others to the starting gate. He can hide behind most other thoroughbreds, which he occasionally does on the outside of back stretches and the inside of home stretches. But Shinny usually makes his presence known, often with a late kick that is something of a trademark. Shinny has been a success since the day Rosette claimed him. He won that day at Turf Paradise, nine wide, which means he didn’t exactly take the fastest route around the track. It was one race, but Rosette had an inkling he might have purchased a pretty special horse for only $3,500. Rosette’s been around horses since he was a kid growing up in 56
Holbrook. As a law student at Arizona State, he spent many an afternoon at Turf Paradise, when time permitted. Horses got into his blood, and racing was a way to stay competitive at something outside courtrooms. A few years after re-settling in Phoenix, Rosette bought his first horse in 2003. Eventually, he had six or seven in the stable, but the pandemic contributed as that number dwindling to one by January of 2021. Then came Shinny. Ortiz first met Shinny in Canterbury Park in Minnesota, where Shinny also raced in 2021, and the introduction was brusque. “He tried to buck me off,” Ortiz said. “I wasn’t warned at all. The boss mentioned later, ‘hey, I forgot to tell you, you have to watch him a bit.’ “Yea, I found that out.” Turns out, Shinny was just playing around. Ortiz thought nothing of it. A friendship was born. “He’s a horse who loves his job, loves his attention,” Ortiz said. “He just knew everybody was watching.” Shinny’s third consecutive victory came last June. That’s when Ortiz knew the horse was special. “The hat trick is tough to do, and he kept doing it, just did it easier every time,” Ortiz said. “Back and forth, from dirt to turf. Long, short, it didn’t matter for him.” Shinny has met every challenge, including incremental steps up in class. For trainers and owners, there’s an art and a science to finding races that test a horse, yet don’t overwhelm him. Rosette and Diodoro successfully walked that line in 2021. Or, maybe, Shinny was just going too good, no matter who he raced. For most of 2021, Shinny raced every three to five weeks, or so. That’s the plan for 2022, too, but Rosette said Shinny will ultimately decide that. If Shinny shows sign of fatigue or injury, they will back off or shut him down. For another year, Shinny can run in starter optional races, which features a hybrid field comprised of some horses that can be claimed and others, like Shinny, that cannot. After that, Rosette and Diodoro will figure out a long-term plan for Shinny, who will be a 6-year-old then. Rosette doesn’t like to think too far ahead, but he would like to keep Shinny in the family long after his racing days are over. “It’s always fun,” Rosette said of horse racing. “But the enjoyment he’s brought with victory after victory, I have a smile ear-to-ear thinking about Shinny. The least I could do is make sure he’s got to a smile ear-to-ear wherever he ends up, right?” The very least, since it’s not often a degenerate idea becomes a dream fulfilled.

Morris Animal Foundation research to focus on equine colic
The organization has selected 5 studies to fund based on their ability to save equine lives. Morris Animal Foundation has selected 5 new studies to receive funding this year focused on equine colic—a significant and potentially life-threatening disease. “Colic consistently ranks among the top health concerns of horse owners and veterinarians,” said Janet Patterson-Kane, BVSc, PhD, FRCVS, Chief Scientific Officer of Morris Animal Foundation, in an organizational release. “We decided to focus on this topic in this year’s equine call for proposals to advance our understanding of intestinal disease associated with colic and ultimately assist in improving outcomes for horses around the world,” she added. According to the release, about 4 to 10% of horses will suffer

from colic at least once in their lifetimes and this number may even be higher. Even though most can be treated successfully on the farm, about 10% need a referral for advanced care such as surgery. Based on scientific excellence and impact, the Foundation’s Large Animal Scientific Advisory Board assessed each submitted grant application and chose the studies with the most potential to save lives, maintain health, and accelerate care for horses with colic.
The following equine colic studies are funded for 2022:
Studying Intestinal Inflammation: Two separate research teams will use variations of an approach to examine the interaction between inflammation and gut motility, to help develop methods of preventing ileus (reduced gut motility) following colic surgery. The findings could significantly assist recovery and reduce hospitalization times. Understanding Risk Factors for Colic Secondary to Transportation: Researchers will search for colic risk factors related to transportation to create improved management suggestions for horses requiring transport. Helping Underserved Communities Recognize Early Signs of Colic: Researchers will produce an educational program for horse owners in underserved Colombian communities to enhance early recognition of colic, a primary aspect of successful treatment. New Prognostic Test for Postoperative Complications: Researchers will find biomarkers to detect horses at higher risk for postoperative surgical complications as an initiative to a new prognostic test.

MADISON, N.J., Feb. 1, 2022 – Merck Animal Health, known as MSD Animal Health outside the United States and Canada, a division of Merck & Co., Inc., Kenilworth, New Jersey, USA (NYSE:MRK), today announced the release of SenseHub® Feedlot, an Allflex Livestock Intelligence product. The state-of-the-art technology is proven to detect sick cattle earlier, more efficiently and more accurately than traditional visual observation. SenseHub Feedlot features an illuminating electronic ear tag that makes it easy to identify and sort cattle needing attention with less labor and minimal disruption to other animals. “SenseHub Feedlot offers those who manage and care for cattle an innovative new approach to detecting illness, including bovine respiratory disease (BRD),” said Jason Nickell, D.V.M., Ph.D., DACVPM, director of insights and outcomes at Merck Animal
Electronic Ear Tag Technology Detects Sick Cattle Earlier, More Accurately
Health. “Cattle’s defense mechanisms mean they often hide symptoms of illness, making it very challenging for even experienced pen riders to find sick animals. SenseHub Feedlot assists the pen rider by removing the guesswork. Animals can be pulled and treated more quickly and more accurately.”
How SenseHub Feedlot works The electronic ear tag tracks behavioral and biometric data to monitor the health of each animal. Body temperature is captured by an infrared thermistor, and a built-in accelerometer measures animal activity. Using collected data, SenseHub Feedlot applies proven machine learning algorithms to identify individual calves that vary from
baseline norms. Caregivers receive a daily pull list on their mobile device and/or computer that includes individual animals identified by the system for further assessment. In parallel, an LED light on the respective sick animals’ tags illuminates and flashes, so pen riders can spot them at a glance. After an animal is pulled, the caregiver determines the cause – BRD, lameness or whatever the issue may be – and provides appropriate treatment. Research proved SenseHub Feedlot reduces mortality and saves labor Research at an Oklahoma feedyard showed that monitoring market cattle with the SenseHub Feedlot system significantly reduced mortality due to BRD, compared
0%
with traditional pen rider observation. In the first 60 days on feed, BRD mortality was lower for cattle monitored with SenseHub Feedlot, even though disease incidence was higher for that group. In addition, the Oklahoma trial demonstrated significant labor savings with SenseHub Feedlot. Riders who observed cattle visually entered an average of 18 pens per day, compared with only 5.3 pens per day on average when assisted by SenseHub Feedlot – a 71% reduction. Nickell noted, “The technology is like having another employee monitoring cattle 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Even with ‘feedlot’ in the product name, the product also has application in backgrounding/ stocker operations or cow/calf operations retaining calves.

Announcing the Rancho Rio Weekly Wild West Ranch Rodeo
By Kari de Castro
Rancho Rio in Wickenburg, Arizona—the Team Roping Capital of the World—is known nationwide for highquality team roping events. Now, in their eighth season they invite the local and surrounding communities to an exciting new weekly Wild West Show every Wednesday.
This new series, centered around a two-hour ranch rodeo competition, features cowboys and cowgirls battling it out for cash prizes and bragging rights in events like trailer loading, wild cow milking, team sorting, team branding and team roping. Limited to 10 four-person teams the competition is fierce as the skills of the real working
cowboy are put to the test. Wilson Cattle Company, out of Canyon, Texas, snagged back-to-back wins in weeks two and three and were narrowly beat out on week four by local favorites, Turner Performance Horses of Congress, Arizona. In addition to the Wild West Ranch Rodeo action, Rancho Rio has partnered with
406 Rodeo out of Montana to highlight some of the best mini bronc and mini bull riders in the country. You’ll see some of the toughest cowboy kids on dirt take on legendary pint-sized buckers. Don’t miss your chance to watch history unfold as each week one cowboy or cowgirl gets a chance to rope the nation’s wildest bounty steer. With a 14-foot horn span the longhorn steer affectionately known as Rio has only been slick-horned by two ropers in the last six years. The Wild West Show is fun for the whole family. Make it a day, and explore the historic town of Wickenburg, too. Showtime is at 2:00 p.m. sharp. Tickets are only $10 and available at the gate. Kids under 14 are free. Limited bird’s-eye VIP seating is also available for $30. Food trucks and many local vendors are on-site. If your local business is interested in sponsoring a team or reserving a VIP area, please contact Jamie Baker at 406. 977.6226. Contestants and spectators can find additional information online at RanchoRioAZ.com and on Rancho Rio’s Facebook page at Facebook.com/ RanchoRio. See you out West! 70

Jim Eagle, an entrepreneur, inventor, stock speculator, “car guy,” poet, author, and weekend cowboy, lives in the shadows of Black Mountain, which looms over an old western mining town in the Arizona desert north of Phoenix, called Cave Creek. Jim is well aquatinted with shadows, for he has spent the last fifty years of his life living in the shadows . . . of anger, guilt, and self-analysis.
The Backstory…
“When you lose a child, you lose yourself.”
THE SOUL OF A MAN may or may not be his story; it is, however, his soul. In an eight-part docudrama in print, Jim attempts to redeem himself with the God of his youth. As he reunites with him, together they weave an entertaining, thought-provoking, intriguing, and heart-wrenching tale filled with emotion, pain, love, hate, anger, guilt, and regret. Challenging both fact and fiction, each battling for supremacy. All with one goal in mind: to help all those less fortunate children of the world, not only to survive but to thrive in the world God has chosen to place them. Jim hopes to accomplish this goal by using the proceeds from this docudrama to provide the means and guidance to these children’s caregivers and heartbroken parents. Praying that they may find peace and happiness in their own lives while willingly accepting the task that God has assigned to them. Ever hopeful that the journey helps him find some semblance of peace in his own restless soul. Wanting to believe that maybe, just maybe . . .

Historic $1 Billion Investment could secure Arizona’s water future for 100 years
Governor Doug Ducey announced a historic plan — forged in partnership with Arizona Senate President Karen Fann and House Speaker Rusty Bowers — to invest $1 billion to secure Arizona’s water future for the next 100 years.
“With resources available in our budget, a relationship with Mexico that we’ve built and strengthened over the last seven years, and the need clear, what better place to invest more. Instead of just talking about desalination – the technology that made Israel the world’s water superpower – how about we pave the way to make it actually happen,” the Governor said during his State of the State Address. “So Speaker Bowers, President Fann and I have been working, and we propose that we make a historic investment: $1 billion.” In his eighth and final State of the State Address, Governor Ducey proposed building on Arizona’s strong record on water policy by making historic investments and using the latest technology to dramatically expand the supply of our state’s most precious natural resource. As President Fann and Speaker Bowers looked on, the Governor delivered his remarks in the state Capitol and said, “Our goal: Secure Arizona’s water future for the next 100 years.” The historic investment, that will be further detailed in the Governor’s Budget Proposal, will make Arizona more resilient to droughts, secure a sustainable water future and allow for continued growth by:• Building upon last year’s investment to the Drought Mitigation Fund with an additional $1 billion General Fund Investment over the next three years; • Laying the groundwork for new largescale water augmentation projects; • Encouraging further reuse and efficiency with current supplies; and • Leading to the further integration of latest technologies, including desalination, into Arizona’s water portfolio BACKGROUND- Building upon the monumental efforts of the Drought Contingency Plan, the Arizona Department of Water Resources and water agencies across California and Nevada established the 500+ Plan in 2021. The historic effort will invest up to $200 million in projects over the next two years to keep the Colorado River’s largest reservoir, Lake Mead, from dropping to
critically low levels. The agreement aims to add 500,000 acrefeet of additional water to Lake Mead in both 2022 and 2023 by facilitating actions to conserve water across the Lower Colorado River Basin. In last year’s budget, Arizona invested $200 million in the water technology of the future, including $160 million for large, statewide water augmentation projects. In October 2021, Governor Ducey announced a $30 million investment to help keep the Lake Mead reservoir from descending to critical levels, a major step forward in the long-
In May 2021, Governor Ducey signed legislation creating the Arizona Surface Water Protection Program. The program ensures clean water in nearly 800 Arizona streams, lakes and rivers that are critical for drinking, fishing and recreation. running effort to protect the Colorado River system. In May 2021, Governor Ducey and Sonora Governor Claudia Pavlovich signed an agreement to secure the neighboring states’ water future and expand collaboration to monitor air quality. The Memorandum of Understanding includes studying opportunities for desalination, the process to remove salt and other minerals from water so it can be made drinkable. In May 2021, Governor Ducey signed legislation creating the Arizona Surface Water Protection Program. The program ensures clean water in nearly 800 Arizona streams, lakes and rivers that are critical for drinking, fishing and recreation. In 2019, Governor Ducey signed the Drought Contingency Plan, a historic effort by Arizona and six other western states to manage one of their most precious resources: water. As part of the multistate Drought Contingency Plan (DCP), Arizona is committed to conserving more water from the Colorado River. Alongside the plan, Governor Ducey created the Governor’s Water Augmentation Innovation and Conservation Council and signed into law the Groundwater Conservation Grant program, which helps protect Arizona’s groundwater resources by focusing on water education, innovation and technology. The Groundwater Conservation Grant program provided $2 million to Active Management Areas for a variety of groundwater conservation projects and programs to protect Arizona’s groundwater resources.

Study unveils staggering cost of pet ownership
The research revealed pet owners spend up to $55,000 during a pet’s lifetime, plus more.
A new Synchrony study, “Lifetime of Care,”1 has revealed that 7 out of 10 pet owners consider their pets family members; however, nearly half underestimated the lifetime cost of care which ranges from $20,000 to $55,000 for dogs and $15,000 to $45,000 for cats.* In addition, about half of all pet owners who believed they were financially prepared for unexpected pet expenses, were not, and would consider a designated financial solution for pet care. This research,1 based off on findings from 1,200 pet parents and 100 veterinarians and confirmed by veterinary clinics, offers consumer insight into the cost of lifetime care for canine or feline ownership. Conducted on behalf of Synchrony’s pet and veterinary financial solutions—CareCredit and Pets Best Pet Insurance—the research covered an extensive array of dog and cat expenses (ie, first-year expenses, food and health insurance, end-of-life expenses, etc). According to the American Pet Products Association,2 90.5 million US homes currently have a pet, and in 2020 itself, $103.6
NRCHA Hall of Fame Banquet Returns at 2022 Teton Ridge Stallion Stakes
In 2022, the National Reined Cow Horse Association and the NRCHA Foundation will once again honor inductees at the Hall of Fame Banquet. The event, which was postponed in 2020 and 2021, is planned for Friday, April 1, at the South Point Hotel & Casino during the Teton Ridge Stallion Stakes. Four honorees will be inducted to the Hall of Fame: Doug Ingersoll, John Ward, Doc Bar and Shining Spark. Doug Ingersoll founded his training business in Lincoln, California, in 1973, with his wife, Debbie. An NRCHA 3A judge, cow horse trainer and competitor, Ingersoll is the younger brother of NRCHA Hall of Fame member Bobby Ingersoll. He mentored several prominent reined cow horse trainers, including the first woman to win the Snaffle Bit Futurity®, Sandy Collier. NRCHA Million Dollar Rider John Ward is from Kingsburg, California. The son of NRCHA Hall of Fame member Greg Ward, John made his own way into a successful cow horse career. He is a two-time NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion, first winning in 1998 and then again in 2008. Horse inductees include two horses that made their mark on the reined cow horse industry, Doc Bar (Lightening Bar x Dandy Doll x Texas Dandy) and Shining Spark (Genuine Doc x Diamonds Sparkle x Mr Diamond Dude). Doc Bar was inducted to the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 1993 and innumerable horses count the sorrel stallion bred by Tom Finley in 1956 in their pedigree. Originally bred to be a race horse, Doc Bar found his 15hand stature best suited for halter, then siring athletic, cow-savvy offspring. He was purchased by Dr. Stephen Jensen and lived his life out at the Jenson’s Double J Ranch in Paicines, California, until his death in 1992. 74
billion was spent on pet care. The Lifetime of Care study1 displayed dog owners can expect to spend between $1,300 to $2,800 and cat owners approximately $960 to $2,500 in the first year alone. “Millions of Americans choose to share life with a pet, yet the true cost of ownership has historically been incredibly vague. Our Lifetime of Care study serves as a helpful tool to prepare prospective pet parents,” said Jonathan Wainberg, senior vice president and general manager, Pet, Synchrony, in a company release.3 “We want pet parents to have a deeper understanding of what to expect financially, and knowledge of the flexible payment solutions that are available to help them manage the costs of care throughout their pet’s lifetime,” he added. Amid the COVD-19 pandemic, it is estimated that 1 in 5 households4 gained a new companion animal. This data propelled Synchrony to promote the financial preparation options available to pet parents including pet insurance like Pets Best and credit cards such as CareCredit.

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – The Reining Horse Foundation set a record for fundraising at its major annual gala, Sliders’ Night Out presented by Toyon Ranch on December 1, and announced a significant expansion of its scholarship program benefiting youth reiners. According to Mike Hancock, chair of the RHF Scholarship Committee, the RHF Board of Directors recently approved growing the number of RHF Scholarships from eight to 10 and increasing annual funding support for these awards from $13,000 to $28,000 per year for the next three years. rising, including the three top awards, which will increase from $2,500 to $5,000 each effective this year. “Our national youth officers, delegates and members get involved with fundraising through programs such as the annual NRHyA Stallion Auction and the Buy-A-Pro Auction, so they learn organizational skills and help keep the youth programs funded,” said Hancock. “These efforts are going well, and the reining community has dramatically increased support of the Reining Horse Foundation in recent years. This enables the RHF to make a greater impact on its core programs. Scholarships are one of the best ways to help support young reiners for bright futures.” In addition to the RHF Scholarships, the RHF makes possible another $32,000 per year in NRHA affiliate and Varsity Reining Club scholarships. This expansion will make the total commitment $60,000 per year. The 2022 applications are available now at nrhya. com/scholarships. To be eligible to apply, students must be members of the National Reining Horse Youth Association for at least 24 months prior to applying and be a senior in high school pursuing an undergraduate degree in a two- or four-year institution, trade or technical school. A previous recipient of an RHF Scholarship may reapply for a second scholarship if she or he meets all other criteria.
The 10 RHF Scholarships will be structured as three at $5,000; three at $2,500; three at $1,500 and one at $1,000. Selection is based on financial need, academic record, involvement in the school and community, a special essay, and references. Applications must be postmarked by March 1. BLM RELEASES ANNUAL PLAN FOR WILD HORSE AND BURRO GATHERS AND FERTILITY CONTROL OPERATIONS
The Bureau of Land Management plans to increase wild horse and burro gather and fertility control operations in Fiscal Year 2022 to reduce the risk of starvation, thirst, and habitat destruction as climate change and extreme drought continues to impact the West. The plan follows a year marked by extreme drought and a record number of emergency actions to save wild horses and burros and protect critical habitat on public lands. Drought significantly magnifies the impact overpopulation can have on both the health of wild horses and burros and the land on which they depend, and this is occurring as overall population levels increase. As of March 1, 2021, the wild horse and burro population on BLM public lands was estimated at more than 86,000 animals – which is more than three times the appropriate management level, though slightly less than the 95,000 animals that were estimated in 2020. When appropriate management levels are exceeded, wild horses and burros can damage the habitat shared by a variety of animals on public lands, and it increases the risk of starvation and thirst for wild horses and burros themselves. If not managed, herds typically grow 20 percent annually, doubling in size every four years. In total, the BLM plans to gather at least 22,000 wild horses and burros from overpopulated herds, remove at least 19,000 excess animals, and treat at least 2,300 animals with various forms of fertility control and release them back on to public lands through the end of September 2022. If achieved, this would be the largest number of animals ever treated with fertility control in one year – nearly double the previous record of 1,160 treatments set in 2021 – as well as the largest number of animals ever gathered and removed in one year. “The BLM is committed to the safety of the wild horses and burros entrusted to our care,” said BLM Director Tracy StoneManning. “Our gather efforts, handling standards, and fertility control work are guided by our compassion for these animals and our desire to protect their well-being, as well as the health of our public lands.” The BLM continues to implement a multi-year plan to achieve and maintain the appropriate management level of wild horses and burros on public lands using a variety of management tools, including gathers to reduce overpopulation, fertility control to slow future growth, and adoptions to place excess animals into good homes. The agency made significant progress last year towards its goals, including placing more than 8,600 animals into private care through adoptions and sales – the largest number in 24 years. Reforms to strengthen protections for animals placed into private care are planned in the coming months. 82
ARIZONA RODEO
specialty license plate is now available
Dave Alford has been around rodeo nearly his entire life. Now 68 years old, Alford, the general manager of Rodeo Scottsdale, was instrumental in the creation of the Arizona Rodeo specialty license plate. While Alford expects many rodeo fans to get the specialty plate, he expects many might order more than one Arizona Rodeo plate. “From fans to contestants, there are many people that will get this plate and they’ll all be helping a good cause,” he said. “And rodeo people haul a lot of things. I’ve already heard from people who say they’re going to put the rodeo plate on their trailers.” The Arizona Rodeo specialty plate costs $25 upon initial application and $17 from each plate goes to promote, educate and preserve the history of rodeo in Arizona. And there’s a lot of rodeo history in Arizona. Alford pointed out that the two oldest rodeos in the world -- Payson’s World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo and Prescott’s World’s Oldest Rodeo -- are in Arizona, and rodeos in Scottsdale, Dave Alford Tucson and Yuma have occurred for nearly a combined 250 years. “There’s a lot of history of rodeo in Arizona and we wanted to put it on a license plate and share it,” said Dave Alford, general manager of Rodeo Scottsdale. “From fans to contestants, there are many people that will get this plate and they’ll all be helping a good cause.” To view and order any specialty plate, visit azmvdnow.gov. Most specialty plates cost $25 upon initial application, of which $17 goes to a designated charitable organization. Personalization can be added for an additional $25 per year. Specialty plates are authorized by the Arizona legislature and have been offered since 1989. Authorized plate designs complete a review by ADOT and law enforcement. In all, there are more than 80 license plate options for Arizona motorists.

Outlaw happy to be back feeding his bull riding soul BY: Justin Felisko, Courtesy PBR.com
Chase Outlaw slapped his riding glove on his thigh and grabbed hold of the stairs on the back of the bucking chutes, ferociously trying to shake away his frustration. Outlaw was oozing with passion all night long Saturday at the PBR
Monster Energy Invitational in Indianapolis. The eighttime PBR World Finals qualifier was livid at himself for letting an opportunity pass him by in the championship round when Oilfield Outlaw’s Yellow Feather bucked him off in 3.48 seconds.

The 29-year-old then let out a yell and leaned over to cool off. Outlaw next walked over to Cody Jesus, who had just been bucked off by Drago in 6.59 seconds, with a smile. “Maybe we should have switched bulls,” Outlaw said, roaring with laughter. Outlaw was still able to leave Gainbridge Fieldhouse with his head held high after his 89-point ride on Hell On The Red was good enough for a fifth-place finish and 33 world points. “I got that freaking monkey off my back,” Outlaw said. “The nerves weren’t as bad tonight as they were last Tuesday when I got on my first practice bull. They was a little bit there, but shoot, I’m glad I got that monkey off my back. And look out.” The Hamburg, Arkansas, native had not competed at a PBR season-opener since 2019, when he finished a career-best third in the world standings. Two reconstructive left shoulder surgeries and a right knee surgery had limited Outlaw to only three Unleash The Beast events the past two seasons and seven PBR events in total. Outlaw admits he had some doubts about whether he would ever make it back to the premier series as his injuries began to pile up. But as the days, weeks and months went by, spending more time in a physical therapy program than the practice pen, he knew his soul was still yearning for those 8-second moments alongside his pals. “Definitely. Everybody’s got doubt when they’re out that long, but that’s what separates the men from the boys,” Outlaw said. “And that’s where you’re going to see the guys that don’t come back, the mental strength and the willpower, the will to win that they had. 1

Remembering Betty White
By: Morris Animal Foundation
A tireless champion for animals, White was former president of MAF which funds health and welfare research to benefit pets, horses and wildlife.
Morris Animal Foundation is remembering the life and incredible impact of Betty White, President Emeritus, after news of her passing. White devoted her life to improving the lives of animals and was part of the Morris Animal Foundation family for over 50 years, supporting its mission to advance the health of animals around the world. She served as a Trustee, Board President, Board President Emeritus, donor, spokesperson and other roles too numerous to mention.
“It is hard to imagine a world without Betty in it. She was a tremendous animal advocate who tirelessly supported the work of Morris Animal Foundation to improve the health of animals globally. All of us at the Foundation are mourning the loss of this amazing woman,” said Tiffany Grunert, President/CEO of Morris Animal Foundation. “We will miss her wit, her intelligence and, most of all, her love of animals and commitment to advancing their health. She was a true inspiration to our staff, her fellow trustees and all of our supporters.” Morris Animal Foundation is thankful for Betty’s service to our organization and for helping us to advance animal health. Highlights of her tenure at the Foundation include: Serving as a Trustee from 1971-2013, as Canine Division Vice President from 1973-1982 and as Board President from 1982-85. Ensuring the Foundation continued to move forward in its mission to improve the lives of animals through her active participation in scientific discussions. Hosting events on behalf of Morris Animal Foundation, including the Gorillas in the Mist motion picture premiere. Raising awareness and encouraging thousands to support our work as our national spokesperson. Sponsoring 86
more than 30 animal health studies to improve the health of cats, dogs, horses and multiple species of wildlife, including California sea otters and mountain gorillas. Established Betty White Wildlife Fund. “Betty was always an active participant in our scientific review process. She often said that our scientific advisory boards were the engines that drove Morris Animal Foundation,” said Bette Morris, Morris Animal Foundation Board Trustee Emeritus and wife of the late Dr. Mark Morris Jr. “If they are the engines, then she certainly was our organization’s heart.” White remained committed to helping animals throughout her life. One of her last acts of philanthropy for Morris Animal Foundation was to establish the Betty White Wildlife Fund, largely in response to the catastrophic effects of the Deep Water Horizon oil spill on marine life. Since Betty’s initial gift, others have contributed to and grown the fund and it has been used as a first line of defense in critical wildlife health needs. “Betty always put the animals first. In the 1990s, she suggested pain management should be an area of future research and funded the first few studies,” said Dr. Rob Hilsenroth, former Morris Animal Foundation Executive Director and a longtime friend of Betty White. “Today, if a veterinarian performs an elective surgery, like a spay or neuter without using pain management, she/he could face a malpractice charge. You can thank Betty White for that revolutionary change in the way we practice all phases of veterinary medicine today.” If you would like to honor Betty White, please consider making a memorial gift to the Betty White Wildlife Fund at Morris Animal Foundation to benefit at-risk animals around the world.

Buddy Bounce Is Ready to Roll Darrin Dlin’s Buddy Bounce is no shrinking violet. “Well, he’s Irish,” deadpanned Dlin. “So he’s very casual, very arrogant. And then he walks in the ring and he puffs up and he’s a real competition horse.” The gray gelding is collecting the receipts to back it up, too. Dlin and 11-year-old Irish sport horse topped at 21 horse starting field to win the first Grand Prix of the winter season at Desert
International Horse Park in Thermal, CA on Thursday. Eight combinations found a clear path around Ken Krome’s 15-effort speed course in the $25,000 FarmVet Grand Prix. None could catch Dlin and Buddy Bounce. “Starting off [in the afternoon], it was a really nice course. It was getting a little bit harder as it went with the shadows and the sun going down,” said Dlin, who went 17th in the order. “So right off the bat, I had to challenge him a little bit at the first jump and then just keep challenging him a little bit as we went because he’s a very, very careful horse and with the shadows the way they were. “He was right on it. It’s his first time back this year and he was ready to roll.”
Kalinka Van’t Zorgvliet Gets the Game It’s said that good things come in small packages. In Kalinka Van’t Zorgvliet’s case, it’s a small, speedy, often opinionated package. “She’s super hot, super fiery,” said world #75 Karl Cook (USA). “We would say like a gamer. She gets the game and she loves doing it—sometimes too much where she leaps in the air and it’s a bit wild. But you know, she just understands the point of the game and it makes it so much fun to ride.” The California native and Belgian Warmblood mare (Thunder van de Zuuthoeve x Goldfee van’t Zorgvliet) have jumped clear—and to top 10 finishes—in 14 of their 15 FEI appearances since August, ending the year with a 2* Grand Prix win at Desert International Horse Park in Thermal, CA. They’re riding that phenomenal streak in 2022, too.

Work is about to start on the Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park’s new Grand Looke Arena. © Blenheim EquiSports Construction of a new grand prix arena at The Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park at San Juan Capistrano in California is about to get under way. The Grand Looke Arena is being constructed on the east side of the Oaks International Grand Prix and Ortega grass fields, and will comprise a sand and fiber mix. The Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park has been managed by the Ridland Group since 1998, with its Blenheim EquiSports event management company producing horse shows at the venue. Late last year it was announced that The Ridland Group had entered into negotiations with the city of San Juan Capistrano to manage The Riding Park for the next 20 to 30 years. The city had sought bids from potential facility managers who would commit

to the completion of about $7 million in environmental improvements. The 40-acre Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park includes the largest expanse of grass fields for show jumping in the United States. Blenheim EquiSports CEO Hillary Ridland said the new arena’s footing is the same as that used at The Las Vegas National Horse Show. “We received very positive feedback from riders and trainers in Las Vegas, regarding this worldclass footing. “Jumper riders have expressed a desire to have more options when it comes to footing and we have been listening,” Ridland said. “The addition of the Grand Looke Arena gives Blenheim more flexibility to hold featured competitions on the grass or the sand, beginning in 2022,” Ridland said.
Construction is expected to be completed before the first show of the season, the Blenheim Spring Classic I, from March 30 to April 3. The Ridland Group’s management proposal included an extensive engineering plan that would address the necessary environmental changes and prevent contaminated water from running off into the nearby San Juan Creek.
FEBRUARY 2022
“We have secured the funding to complete the needed water infrastructure work and look forward to continuing to make The Riding Park better and even more accessible for the community as a whole,” Ridland said. “We’re committed to being at the forefront of making the facility and equestrian sport as environmentally friendly as possible.”

World Record likely set at Jan. 8th Auction in AZ.
On Saturday, January 8th, Western Trading Post sold a Lander Blue Turquoise squash blossom set for a princely sum of $112,000*. The set was advertised as consisting of 4 pieces, including a bracelet, ring, earrings and of course, the squash blossom necklace. The items were made by an unknown Navajo jeweler during the 1970s who crafted them using, what has now become, the rarest and most highly sought after turquoise in the world - Lander Blue. A number of dealers and collectors participated in the bidding. In the end, it went to an internet bidder who is a collector of Lander Blue Turquoise. The primary value was in the turquoise itself, however the purchaser told staff at Western Trading Post, he liked the idea of it being set in a vintage sterling silver setting—that it added to the history and aesthetics of the turquoise.

Other collectible items of note sold during the auction were: A pair of matching Colt Pistols, with custom Edward Bohlin grips and an Edward Bohlin made double gun belt rig. The set sold for $17,360*. A Remington - Hepburn No. 3 Falling Block rifle in .4570 caliber, which was made in the 1880s. It sold for $13,440*. A Cluster style Navajo concho belt made by the artist Sharon Sandoval, using Carico Lake Turquoise, which sold for $11,760*. Two matching engraved Colt Pistols with gold inlays done by the Master Gun Engraver, Charlie Baker, which sold for $11,760*. And a Third Phase Navajo Chiefs blanket made of Germantown wool dating to the 1890s, which sold for $10,640*. Co-owner and lead auctioneer, Jim Olson said, “We had great buyer attendance from all over the country for this auction. Over 550 bidders participated online and live with thousands more viewing the auction during the weeks prior.” And with regards to likely setting an auction World Record, Olson said, “We have thoroughly researched results from the biggest auction houses, we googled it, and have also looked at auction results available to us through services we subscribe to, and have found no other squash blossom necklaces sold at an auction for any where near this amount. While we do know of a few gallery sales of squash blossoms selling in the six-figure range, we believe this one was the first one ever sold at a live auction for sixfigures.”

phenomenon, Bernard Fonck. The three new collections the Southwest Floral Collection, the Lucky 7 Collection, and the Bernard Fonck Collection - showcase the company’s range of expertise in creating high-quality products for both Western and English riders. The Southwest Floral Collection of bits and spurs showcases a floral pattern of turquoise stones with silver accents on a canvas of raw steel. The classic antique starburst and cross motifs pay homage to traditional craftsmanship, while the raw steel construction guarantees durability. The Lucky 7 Collection of bits features a silver four-leaf clover brightly shining against a darker background of antique metal. The four leaves of this legendary symbol of luck are said to represent faith, hope, love and success - perfect for any rider. “Our Southwest and Lucky 7 Collections are a blend of ruggedness and artistry, much like equestrian sports themselves,” said Christina Fordham, vice president of Partrade. “These new bits and spurs provide the strong sense of confidence that comes from accurate and effective communication between horse and rider, all while looking really good.” The Bernard Fonck Collection, developed in collaboration with Bernard Fonck, is a progressive series of bits designed to take a horse step-by-step through all levels of training and competition. Fonck, a seven-time National Reining Horse Association World Open champion and multiple World Equestrian Games medalist, is the first European-based trainer to achieve the status of NRHA Two Million Dollar Rider.

The Special Ones: Happy (official) birthday to the two last known Secretariats
Courtesy Thoroughbredracing.com
There were more than 650 registered foals sired by Secretariat. The first were born in 1975 and the last in 1990. There are just two who are known to still walk this Earth – a son born in 1988 and a daughter born in 1989. They had their official birthdays on January 1, so that means Border Run is now 34 years old and Trusted Company 33. They are remarkable, emotional reminders of the horse that many consider the greatest of all time.
Border Run - Out of the outstanding broodmare Crimson Saint, Border Run is true equine royalty. He’s a full brother to Terlingua
Trusted Company: Now aged 33, she receives electromagnetic treatment on her hips, back and legs twice a week to help keep her limber and reduce the pain from arthritis. Photo: Patricia McQueen and Pancho Villa; both were multiple Graded stakes winners who often flashed brilliance as racehorses. Terlingua, of course, is best known as the dam of Storm Cat. Born March 23, 1988, Border Run sold for $650,000 as a yearling and was stakes-placed at three but spent the second half of his 41-race career in the claiming ranks. Current owner Curtis Wright stumbled across the chestnut in 2011 and immediately recognized him as the same horse he saw at Southern California tracks in the early 1990s. He wasted no time acquiring the gelding, then 23, for the small Washington farm that he and his wife Margo call home, and Border Run has been spoiled rotten ever since.

Trusted Company - Across the country in Western Pennsylvania, the big mare Trusted Company continues to feel her oats at Bright Futures Farm, an accredited Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance sanctuary and 501(c)(3) charity run by Bev Dee. The daughter of Secretariat out of the Stage Door Johnny mare Star Snoop needed a new home in late 2018, and she found a good one. She also found celebrity, with her own Facebook page and plenty of adoring fans. ‘Company’, as she is known, is a Valentine’s girl, born on February 14, 1989. She still enjoys running around in an arena and tossing her head like she’s the boss – which she is, says Dee – before going into the pasture with her buddy, the 29-year-old gelding Catch This T. The mare enjoys the colder weather, and only wears a coat when the temperature drops to 20 degrees F. She’s become a connoisseur of Equus Magnificus German Horse Muffins, in addition to her first love, Mrs Pastures cookies. Precious bloodlines It’s inevitable that these two precious reminders of Secretariat will eventually be gone, but there’s no telling how many other Secretariat descendants are out there. With grandsons such as A P Indy, Storm Cat and Gone West – all three were not only leading continued on page 106

Negotiations Underway To Reopen Del Mar Horsepark Southern California’s Del Mar Horsepark, which closed suddenly at the end of 2020, could reopen and be hosting shows again within the year after a major show management company submitted a bid to lease the facility. Last week, West Palms Event Management was conditionally accepted as the new lessee of the 65-acre facility in Del Mar by the board of directors of the state’s 22nd District Agricultural Association, which manages the horse park and the nearby Del Mar Fairgrounds. However, West Palms will have to successfully submit a plan for running the facility that includes addressing an estimated $3 million to $4 million in infrastructure improvements required to address water quality issues. The stormwater run-off concerns were a major reason the 22nd DAA closed the From page 104
Secretariat sires, but also top sires of sires and broodmare sires – descendants are everywhere. The pool shrinks considerably, of course, when looking at only the second generation. Secretariat’s stallion sons in total sired more than 13,000 offspring (not counting numerous sport horses), and his producing daughters delivered about 3,200 foals. That means that there were more than 16,000 Thoroughbred grandsons and granddaughters of the Triple Crown winner, and there’s a strong likelihood that quite a number of them are still around. After all, the youngest 106
West Palms Event Management CEO Dale Harvey is working to develop a plan that could reopen Southern California’s Del Mar Horsepark within 3-6 months. horse park in December 2020, abruptly cancelling the planned 2021 show schedule and forcing about 40 horses living there to move. “I really felt strongly that we cannot afford to lose venues for horse shows in California,” said Dale Harvey, CEO of West Palms Event Management, which runs California hunter/ jumper shows including the Sacramento International, the Flintridge Horse Show, the Del Mar National, the Riders Cup and other shows at Los Angeles Equestrian Center. offspring of his later sons such as Academy Award and Tinners Way would be less than 15 years old, and about 75 of his daughters had foals as recently as 2005. Many of these grandkids are no doubt serving time as pleasure or competitive sport horses, some are pasture ornaments, and others are pensioners on major horse farms; there are even a few stallions still available for breeding. The ones owned by individuals or small-time equine operations are revered for who they are, not what they may or may not have done in racing or breeding circles. The Secretariat magic truly transcends time and generations.
His successful bid means West Palms now enters negotiations with the 22nd DAA to reopen the horse park, a focal point of which will be creating and submitting the stormwater mitigation plan. If the negotiations go smoothly, Harvey hopes to have the horse park reopened for horse shows, events and limited boarding by summer. “There are a lot of hurdles between now and that happening, mostly associated with the stormwater mitigation project,” he said. “It’s a very complicated project, but I think everyone is working toward the same end, which is to get horses back on that property.” The water-quality work will require designing and installing a drainage collection system that will filter water before it goes into the public sewer system. The infrastructure improvements are necessary because the horse park, as a property where a high density of animals—up to 499—may be kept, is governed by stringent environmental and water-quality laws applied to feedlots to ensure they do not affect public water quality. Harvey is working with an experienced engineer to develop plans for the system, which will need approval by the 22nd DAA and the Regional Water Quality Control Board. West Palms has two years

to meet those requirements, and the 22nd DAA will work with Harvey to expedite the process where possible, according to an article in the Del Mar Times newspaper. “We are all very incentivized to get this done now, because I don’t think any one of us wants to see two more years of no equestrian activity at Horsepark,” Del Mar Fairgrounds CEO Carlene Moore told the paper. Should the horse park successfully reopen this summer, Harvey hopes to get hunter/jumper shows up and running as quickly as possible and add dressage and potentially other disciplines in the future. The horse park also would host non-equestrian activities such as mud runs, markets or dog events like agility and flyball. Meanwhile, West Palms remains “full committed” to running its existing slate of shows scheduled across California. “I’d be lying if I didn’t say it was daunting task to say the least, but I just felt [that] we’ve done a lot of shows there over the years, and I’ve been a huge part of Del Mar for 20 years plus, so it was very important to me to do everything I could to get Del Mar Horsepark reopened,” Harvey said. “I felt compelled to make an effort.”

Horse Soldier Bourbon honored by Kentucky General Assembly
From left, SPEDA President and CEO Chris Girdler, Horse Soldier COO Scott Neil, State Sen. Rick Girdler, Horse Soldier CEO John Koko and Somerset Mayor Alan Keck on the Senate floor Thursday, Jan. 20. The Kentucky House and Senate issued citations during regular session Jan. 20 to Horse Soldier Bourbon founders John Koko and Scott Neil, honoring their military service after 9/11 and their commitment to build a $200-million distillery experience in Somerset-Pulaski County. The citations offer Koko and Neil the General Assembly’s “sincere commendation and gratitude for both the sacrifices they have made in the interest of their fellow Americans and for their role in this vital new partnership.” “These are extraordinary men for multiple reasons,” Senate President Robert Stivers said as he introduced Koko and Neil on the Senate floor. “One, the $200 million investment and creation of new jobs in
110
south-central Kentucky and Pulaski County, and most importantly, their service to our nation as an elite group of men who fought and some of them that were lost in this reaction and response to 9/11.” The Horse Soldier Bourbon team officially broke ground for its 225-acre distillery experience, Horse Soldier Farms, on Oct. 19, 2021 — the 20th anniversary of the day their hand-selected detachment of 12 Green Berets from the 5th Special Forces Group entered Afghanistan on horseback. Later named the “Horse Soldiers,” their clandestine mission marked the first time U.S. troops rode to war on horseback since World War II. The movie 12 Strong is based on their story. Upon retiring from the military, the Horse Soldier team traveled the world and discovered a passion for making bourbon. They founded their ultra-premium, award-winning brand and determined their legacy would be to build a distillery in Kentucky. Working closely with Somerset-Pulaski Economic Development Authority (SPEDA) President and CEO Chris Girdler and Somerset Mayor Alan Keck — who were also present for the citations — Horse Soldier chose Somerset as the location of their distillery in 2019 and have designed a distillery experience that weaves together their love of country and craft. In addition to honoring Koko and Neil for their selection of a community in his district, State Sen. Rick Girdler recognized SPEDA for its work in changing the economic development landscape in Somerset-Pulaski County. “I applaud the Somerset-
Pulaski County Economic Development [Authority], they worked hard to do this,” Girdler said. “This is one of several, but this is probably their biggest catch that we’ve had thus far. And maybe we’ll have more. But in this process, SPEDA has been very instrumental at this and causing this to happen in our county and I thank them for that.”

Dugan had an exceptional year with her own Southern Justice, a 2012 Arabian gelding. Together, the pair finished second in the CEIYJ2* 120 at Broxton Bridge rides in January and April and went on to win the USEF CEIYJ2* National Championship in November. In September, the pair traveled to Ermelo, the Netherlands, where they competed as part of the U.S. Endurance Team that finished in fifth place at the FEI Endurance World Championship for Young Riders & Juniors. Second Career Star: Prison Break Pilsner This successful racehorse is now a 1D barrel horse
Prison Break Pilsner was bred and raised for the burn – the raw speed of American Quarter Horse racing – and now he has added the turn, perfecting his second career of barrel racing, which combines the agility of sharp, high-speed turns with the high adrenaline rush of a short sprint.
Bred by Corner K Quarter Horses LLC and foaled in 2015, Prison Break Pilsner shares his name with a popular beer. He is by champion and leading sire FDD Dynasty and out of the Royal Quick Dash mare Lady Knockout, a threequarter sister to All American Futurity (G1) winner Falling In Loveagain. Prison Break Pilsner made 20 career starts, and consistently lit the board in 65 percent of them, earning $16,983 and bringing lots of excitement to his connections. The BMAQ Racing LLC partnership, which includes Brian and Traci Bolner and Ramiro Martinez, acquired the horse in November 2017. Periodically, during his racing career, they had him exercised at the swimming facility at Byler Performance Equine in Bellville, Texas. Swimming a horse allows the horse to exercise without the physical stress of high-impact work like galloping. The facility’s owner, Kimmi Byler, also trains barrel horses, and when it was time for Prison Break Pilsner to find his new career, his coowner Traci Bolner knew just where she wanted him to go. “She loves these horses and wanted to find him a second career,” Byler said. “She visited with me and we just kinda got started.” When the gelding first came off the track, he went to two trainers, including a reining/cow horse trainer and a barrel trainer, who introduced him to life as a riding horse. One of the biggest steps in that was teaching the horse the concepts of rate and turn and how to be mellow, even in new locations. Once Byler started patterning him more seriously, she noticed that left turns around the barrel were a little more difficult for him than right turns. The barrel pattern’s cloverleaf involves three turns. Traditionally, horses start to the right, which means the next two barrels are left turns. After Byler discovered his dislike for left turns, she flipped
their pattern, so that he had two right turns. The gelding also had to learn about running without blinkers, which means a great deal more visual distraction. “I had to teach him how to dial in and trust that wherever that barrel is, I want you going to it,” she said. The thing that has stayed the same, though, is his pre-game ritual. His racing connections explained to Byler that when the horse went out onto the track, just as they began to trot him out in the warmup, he would do a quick jump and kick before going to work. “He has carried that trait on,” she said. “Whenever we go into the warmup, when I hit that long trot, he’ll suddenly rev his engine and jump and fire out the back. Once he gets that done, he’s all business. He softens down, lopes up into my hand, starts just being right there and flowing. It’s funny, that trait hasn’t ever left him.” He has also kept his determination and focus. Even in crowded warmups at the barrel race, he is bold and workmanlike. “You can tell he’s, like, ‘I’m here for business,’” she said. “He’s always had that dominant personality.” As a barrel racing trainer, Byler has thrown a leg over many horses that started their career on the racetrack. “I’ve really enjoyed those colts tremendously,” she said. “I like seeing these horses have secondary careers, and go on and make something.” With patience and slow training, Prison Break Pilsner has clicked in to the sport of barrel racing, and is now proving himself as a 1D winner in the barrel pen. In that world, futurity horses can be 4 or 5 years of age, then followed by derbies at 6 or 7 years of age. So Prison Break Pilsner has a lot of opportunity ahead of him at major barrel racing events around the country. “We took things really slow with him. I was fortunate to have owners who were really understanding about taking a horse that has all the ability and run, but we needed to get that under control,” Byers said. “(Now) we’re going to start stepping up to the bigger events.” Second Career Stars is an ongoing series on retired racing American Quarter Horses in new careers.
