Rodeo and bring some friends. This is a piece of incredible Scottsdale History and reflects on an era almost gone and it deserves our support. As I am writing this as the TV News is running a story on the end of the Barnum and Bailey`s Circus. The owners state a change of entertainment interests and in turn the lack of attendance as the cause of the demise. I agree with that but pressure from animal activists surely have played a role I am guessing. My fear is that with Circus`s gone, Sea World not presenting the Orca`s in their show and other changes in the perception of animal exhibitions……. Rodeo will be next in the Crosshairs. Hope that day never happens and I am sure that the Sport I love will not go down nor by the wayside on our watch. I will be at every performance of the 2017 Parada Del Sol Rodeo and I hope to see you all there. “Stay Well and Keep Riding”

The Real Pony Express Rider According to Mark Twain in his classic travelogue “Roughing It,” the pony express riders he saw and described were not dressed as we popularly believe them to be: “The rider’s dress was thin, and fitted close; he wore a ‘round-about, and a skull-cap, and tucked his pantaloons into his boot-tops like a race-rider. He carried no arms—he carried nothing that was not absolutely necessary, for even the postage on his literary freight was worth five dollars a letter. . .His horse was stripped of all unnecessary weight, too. He wore a little wafer of a racing-saddle and no visible blanket. He wore light shoes, or none at all. The little flat mail-pockets strapped under the rider’s thighs would each hold about the bulk of a child’s primer.”

Ben Johnson Knew How to Set A Horse Some of the old Cowboy stars were accomplished horseback riders, but very few could “set a horse” as if they were one with the animal. Cowboy actor Ben Johnson was one of the best ever. He was discovered when he doubled Henry Fonda in Fort Apache and he went on to star in many Westerns, winning the Academy Award for best actor in Last Picture Show (1971). He died of a heart attack at age 77, while visiting his mother, Ollie, at Leisure World in Mesa, Arizona.
Border Crossers In the old days (early twentieth century) riders were often hard pressed to know exactly where the Mexican border was and often cowboys wandered back and forth looking for strays. Few people realize Texas John Slaughter’s Arizona ranch also went deep into Sonora and his cowboys rode back and forth on the slightest whim. Hard to believe today.
“A horse was just a ride to him, and he went through half a hundred in the next few years.” —Ron Hansen, in his new Billy The Kid bio, “The Kid”

A World Champion Cowboy has just finished his last roping here on earth and is now having “The Rodeo” of his life. Dale was born in Safford, AZ on February 6, 1928 to Jim Smith and Winnie Smith; he lived in Safford until 1955 when he moved to Chandler, Arizona. While in Safford, AZ he played football for Central Arizona College and was a top notch Junior Rodeo winner, which started his rodeo years. He married Barbara Joan Miller in 1947. Dale and Bobbie had 4 children, Vick Bryan (10-2-1950
to 2-25-1951), Grady Miller-wife Shannon, Michelle Janet (3-10-19552-6-2008) and Mark Dale. Dale was one of the first flying cowboys, flying his own plane from rodeo to rodeo while family and friends hauled his horses. His credits as a roper are numerous. Some of his highlights include: Won consecutive World Team Roping Championships in 1956-1957. Missing the third by just $13.00. In
1959 he went to the National Finals Rodeo in three events-team roping, tie-down roping and steer roping-becoming the first man in Pro Rodeo history to accomplish that feat. Inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in 1979. Inducted into the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in 1995. In 2000 he received the Ben Johnson Memorial

Award in Oklahoma. The annual award is presented to a living person who has been involved in the rodeo industry. The recipient must be someone who, like Ben Johnson, creates a positive image for rodeo and the Western lifestyle. The pride and joy of his horses was Poker Chip Peake, his calf roping horse. Poker Chip was considered one of the “world’s greatest roping horses”. Poker Chip was inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in 1979 and buried at the The National Cowboy Hall of Fame. It was once said, “Any cowboy could get on Poker and win”. His love for the sport and being a businessman he devoted his time to the RCA/PRCA. In the 1950’s he was elected team-roping director on the Board of Directors. He later served for 16 years, longer than any other person, as president. 1962-69, 1971-72, 197681. In 1976 Dale married Linda Sue Hayes and they had two children, Dawn Suzanne-husband PJ and Dale Ward-wife Amanda. The ranching life in Arivaca was home to them for many years. During Dale’s lifetime he owned four ranches and ran them with great skill; keeping a lot of his information in his head, which at times caused some confusion. His first ranch, The Diamond Bar, was close to his parents’ ranch north of Kingman, AZ. The other ranches included the Lincoln Ranch, Flying X Ranch and the Arivaca Ranch. He still owns 40 acres of land in Brentwood, CA next to his great friend Jack Roddy. Ranching days were busy with new baby claves, branding, shipping and round up among the other ranch life responsibilities. The plane came in handy again, as he checked on each ranch often. Roping was still part of his life, with many held in Arivaca. With the move to Standfield, AZ, his quarter horse racing career started. Having a good eye for super stallions or great mares helped him win many breeding awards. His racehorses won many first places, second places and shows. Special horses that made his career were Late to Bed, Sign John Doe and Prince of Cash. In 1996 Dale’s horse, Sign It Super, won the Marathon Handicap in Los Alamitos, CA. 870 yards in 44.51 seconds. With this win he was voted “Champion Distance Horse” of the year. In 1999 Dale suffered a massive stroke and his days as a cowboy, rancher and racer came to an end.

Sun Circuit - An Equine Extravaganza At WestWorld
This March, WestWorld Equestrian Center will host two world-class events that feature a full range of equestrian sports. The 44th Annual Sun Circuit Quarter Horse Show will run from March 4-12, showcasing the talents and versatility of Quarter Horses in an array of events. Classes run the gamut from polished perfection to down and dirty athleticism. With as many as 8 arenas running simultaneously, there is a lot to take in every day. If that wasn’t enough equine excitement, the
64th Annual Parade del Sol Pro Rodeo will be held March 9-12, with 3 rodeo performances and a night of Bull Riding. This is the first time these two well known organizations will hold their events at the same time, and it certainly gives Arizona residents and visitors a tremendous selection of activities and entertainment to choose
from. While both events bring competitors from around the country to Scottsdale, local horse enthusiasts can reap the benefits as well. Admission and parking are free for all days and events of Sun Circuit. Spectators can enjoy popular and exciting showdowns in reining, roping, cow horse and Cowboy Mounted Shooting.

Arizona is a hotbed for great roping competition, and the DT Performance Horses Roping Futurity will certainly attract the top of the game with big money added. The Smart Boons Fence Work Challenge showcases spectacular cow horses competing for over $20,000 in prize money. This is a fast paced event, Friday March 10, just prior to the Rodeo. Horse and rider demonstrate their skill at “boxing” a cow in at one end of the arena, then running it along the fence to heart thumping stops and turns. For more wild action, Cowboy Mounted Shooting will blast into the North Hall on Sunday the 12th prior to Sunday’s Rodeo performance with the finals being run as prelude to the Rodeo. Besides seeing the best horses and riders in the rings, spectators can shop in the extensive vendor hall. All manner of horse gear, horse trailers, clothing, jewelry, boots, hats, home furnishings and western lifestyle items will be on display. During the rodeo, even more vendors open up their booths. Sun Circuit will also have free entertainment with Chris Manning Country playing at various times throughout the show. There is even opportunities to learn something new. On March 3rd and 4th, there are a number of free horse clinics and demonstrations that are open to everyone. This year’s topics include overall horsemanship pointers, training tips, and secrets from the top pros. Have a horse crazy kid in the house? Sun Circuit is also fantastic family event. Its a great way to learn more about horses, and all the activities you can do with them. Parada Del Sol’s schedule brings Bull Riding to the Equidome on Thursday at 7:00pm, and Rodeo performances Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:00. The Rodeo starts at 2:00 pm on Sunday. Folks planning to attend the rodeo are encouraged to come early and enjoy all that the horse show has to offer. On the flip side, many of Sun Circuit’s exhibitors are planning on attending the Rodeo. To make it even easier to combine the two events, rodeo tickets are available for sale on the SunCircuit.com home page. Be sure to use the Promo Code shown there when checking out. Some of the best and most diverse horse action in the country will be in your back yard. Plan on joining the fun March 4th thru the 12th at West World. The complete schedule of classes and events can be found at SunCircuit.com.

I have just finished my first clinic of the year, in Mesa, Arizona. There was a horse in that clinic that I had seen 3 years ago at a clinic in Las Cruces, New Mexico. When I saw the horse 3 years ago, it had a lateral softness issue while moving that was perplexing, and I didn’t have a good answer for the rider. I left her with some suggestions, but I didn’t have a definitive answer. Fast forward to January 2017, and as soon as I saw the issue, I knew I had the answer. It was something I’d learned from thinking outside the box, and looking at different disciplines for answers. It came from not being happy with the status quo. It came from a book on French classical dressage. It came from my decision to change. That’s right, my decision. Not my ability to change. Not from my talent to change. My decision. My wife Robyn was a Human Resources professional for 25 years, and she always told me that change is the hardest thing for people to do. We witnessed it first hand when my wife, son and I moved to Australia in 2006. Robyn was an NRHA Limited Open World Champion, NRHA judge, and NRHA approved

Schillin’ Out with Warwick Schiller
CHANGE IS HARD AT FIRST, MESSY IN THE MIDDLE AND GORGEOUS AT THE END. ~ Robin Sharma show secretary. Australian reining had been running on the same rulebook since 1990, and just before we moved there the membership voted to affiliate with the NRHA and adopt their rulebook. Because of her experience, Robyn was invited onto the Reining Australia board to help them understand and implement the new rulebook. It didn’t take long before people had a dislike for my wife, even Warwick though they had never met her. It bothered her for quite some time, and it wasn’t until we moved back to the US 4 years later that she could look at it from an outside perspective and realize that it was not her they didn’t like, but it was change they didn’t like. My wife was just the representative of the change they couldn’t embrace.
The years have passed, and I was in Australia recently talking to a board member of Reining Australia, and he told me that the affiliation was the best thing that happened to reining there. He said new people coming into the industry now have no problem with it, because they didn’t have to change their dogma. I am very lucky giving clinics, because everyone who Schiller comes to my clinics is open to change, in fact they want change. But you can’t make people change. The best way to do that is to plant a seed, and let it grow. I accomplish this with my YouTube channel. I just recently passed 10 million views on my videos, even though none of them are a full tutorial on how to do anything. They are all about
FEBRUARY 2017
thinking about things just a little bit differently. So I plant that seed, and let it grow. The next step is people then sign up to my online video subscription, which has over 400 individual training videos, working with all types of horses, both at home and at clinics around the world. I only allow video subscribers to ride in my clinics, the clinics are actually an added benefit to being a subscriber, and ensures that all participants are not only ready for change, but understand the principles of what I’m trying to achieve, and have worked on it at home. I have questions from many horse owners around the world with questions like “There is someone at my barn who fights with her horse all the time, how do I tell her there is an easier way?” My reply is that you don’t, you lead by example. You plant a seed. As the saying goes, the best sermons are lived, not preached. My wife was right when she said that the hardest thing for people to do is change, but once you learn how to change, and embrace change, your horses, and your life, take a turn for the better. Change on, my friends, change on.

NCHA Hall of Fame Nominations
Nominations may be submitted at any time for deserving individuals for inclusion in the NCHA Members Hall of Fame but should be received in the NCHA offices by no later than March 1 of each year to be considered for induction that year. Nominations are kept on file and included for review for five years. The criteria and form for submitting nominations to the Members Hall of Fame was recently updated. The Members Hall of Fame was specifically established to recognize individuals for accomplishments OUT of the cutting pen. In order to honor those individuals, we need help in locating those deserving persons. If you feel you know of someone that qualifies for the NCHA Members Hall of Fame, please review the criteria, complete the nomination form, and send in a maximum of five letters of support to the NCHA outlining their accomplishments.

Breeding Your Next Champion By Al Dunning
Buying horses is a difficult and tedious task but breeding horses is even tougher! In the fall of each year, I go to the NCHA Futurity not only to compete at times, but also to be a student of the industry. I watch the horses being shown and check the bloodlines to see what is the most popular and what crosses are preforming the best. During the sales, I look at every horse to determine attitude, conformation and the positive traits of each individual. Studying trends annually keeps me up to speed on which sires are most prolific and which dams have the bloodlines to reproduce successfully. I spend plenty of time talking to fellow trainers. They give me an inside perspective on which horses are easy to train, have the right attitude and the greatest athleticism. I want to know which ones they get excited about riding. These horses make our job easier and a lot more fun! Probably the most exciting part of my trip is scouting for the next great sire coming down the pike. Undoubtedly, this new up-and-coming sire will have finally gotten to breed quality mares in adequate numbers to produce something special. Sorting out whether they are a fluke or the real deal takes a keen eye. A key to finding the right horse to breed to is to identify the optimum characteristics and suitable conformation that fits events you wish to compete in. Good conformation to me means soundness and structure to ensure longevity in their career. I try to always watch the horses’ movement to look for something special in their step or any things that are problematic. If I decide to purchase any horses while I am at the sales, I enlist the help of an expert veterinarian that understands the rigors of my event. With all of this knowledge and continuing education, breeding is still a tossup. I watch the same mare with great conformation and impeccable breeding and a huge performance record year after year having different caliber foals. Even breeding to the same sire on multiple years, you are never going to have an exact duplicate. I try to breed my mare to a sire that has the capabilities and characteristics you want and a proven track record. What’s interesting about sires is some can go along as young sires and not produce much but become very potent as a sire later in their years. For my mare, I want her to be impeccably bred on both sides. The black type that is referred to at major sales means that the mare has been a producer or she has parents that are producers on both sides. However, there are many winners that don’t produce and some producers that never won. This adds to the guessing game. One thing that is not logical to me is when somebody buys a mare to breed that has conformation faults, a bad attitude, soundness problems or has an unpopular pedigree. Usually these issues will carry over to the foal and the breeder will probably get exactly what they already have or more often even worse. Horses are a huge expenditure! If you look at a tabulation of your expenses, you probably think 1) your house, 2) your car, maybe then 3) your horses when you consider all of the paraphernalia and constant care needed to show or keep them going. It’s risky business in breeding; consider the financial requirements seriously before going down that path. With all of this said, one of the greatest joys of my horsemanship career was watching a foal be born out of one of the mares I won on and loved. There is nothing like the hopes and dreams that are all tied up into one big bouncing bundle of bucking excitement that you see running in the pasture. Then if your dreams come true you may raise the most outstanding horse you’ve ever had. It can become an addiction! Sometimes the foals turned out great and sometimes not, but it didn’t matter. The moment was so special. The time you spend with them and the relationship you have is like raising a child; it adds to why we breed horses. It’s not all about how much they are worth or if they become a champion. It’s a good part of life. In summation, if you’ve really thought about it and realize the expense and risk involved, breed your mare. Be sure that overall it’s for that special excitement of actually seeing what your personal crystal ball sought. The more logical you are and educated, the better chance you’ll have of having an enjoyable breeding experience. As a professional, I have always searched for that dream cross that would raise the extra special performance horse that would not only win, but would never be sold and become part of our family and our life and fulfill those childlike dreams.

the RTCFR will be held at the Prescott Valley (Ariz.) Event Center (PVEC) in 2017 and 2018. The 2017 event will take place Oct. 5-7 in PVEC’s indoor arena. The RTCFR was held from 2006-2016 in Las Cruces, N.M., in conjunction with the Southern New Mexico State Fair, in an outdoor arena. “We are very, very pleased to be able to be in a facility like this,” Stressman said. “This building reminds me considerably of the Thomas & Mack Center. I think it will be an outstanding venue. We think this is going to be a great opportunity and it will enhance the sport of rodeo, not only in Arizona, but New Mexico as well.” The Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas is the home of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER. Turquoise Circuit Finals Rodeo General Manager Mary Borgen also is upbeat about the PVEC being the new home of the RTCFR. “You can do so many things 1 (indoors) – laser lights, there’s no weather and you can see the cowboys’ faces,” said Borgen in an online article from the Jan. 5 Prescott Daily Courier. “It’s more exciting. Indoor rodeos have a different atmosphere. It would be similar to Vegas.” In 1975, the PRCA created a format that divides the United States into 12 geographic circuits. The circuit year-end champions and the average winners in each event qualify for the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Kissimmee, Fla., each spring.

Pain relief for your horse. Neprofin is a revolutionary new pain treatment for the alleviation of lameness in horses. Originally formulated to work on the same scientific principles as NSAID’s and phenylbutazone (bute), these enzymes have since proven effective on sprains, fractures, rheumatoid arthritis and osterarthritis. Neprofin assists with tissue repair, reduces fluid formation, accelerates the healing process and can be adopted as a replacement therapy in pathological conditions.
USE NEPROFIN FOR:
Improved energy levels Inflammation, pain and muscle soreness Sprains, fractures, arthritic conditions Accelerated healing Great for household pets too
BEFORE NEPROFIN AVF USE
AFTER NEPROFIN AVF USE
This mare has an old injury to the lateral side of her right front cannon bone, with deep scarring. There was extensive soft tissue damage which restricted her movement, causing a shortness of stride. This image shows visible enlargement of the soft tissue injury by its heat signature from recurrent inflammation. Note that the right leg is visibly larger than the left leg.
Following 8 weeks of Neprofin administration, this mare showed a marked improvement. Heat signatures have returned to normal, showing virtually no signs of inflammation or pain. Neprofin was able to digest and eliminate the inflamed scar tissue mass, which had caused lameness and a shortened stride. Note that both legs are now identical in size and shape. The mare is now sound and bears weight evenly on both front legs.

something I wanted to do after I had my great rookie season. Any time you can earn a million doing anything, it is pretty incredible, but to do it at 22 years old is awesome. To be the youngest guy ever to do it shows that our sport is progressing and is getting better all the time.” Kimzey has won the past three consecutive bull riding world championships. He’s the only cowboy to win world championships in his first three years of competing in the PRCA. “I think my motivation and dedication to the sport of rodeo have been the keys to my success,” Kimzey said. “I definitely want to wear the gold again this year (2017). It’s a new season, and my reign is already over as far as I’m concerned. It’s time to put my nose back to the grindstone, stay on bulls and get back to the No. 1 spot and don’t let it go.”

WASHINGTON - The Bureau of Land Management today issued a call for public nominations to fill three positions on its national Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board. The deadline for 2017 Zoetis AQHA Best Remuda Award applications is March 1, 2017. To honor the contributions that ranch horses have made to the heritage of the American Quarter Horse, the American Quarter Horse Association and AQHA Corporate Partner Zoetis present an award to honor a ranch for raising outstanding ranch horses. Applications for the 2017 Zoetis AQHA Best Remuda Award are due March 1. To apply for the award, download an application. Any ranch that owns five or more registered American Quarter Horse mares used to produce horses for ranch work, is a member of AQHA and is an AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder is eligible to receive the award. Previous recipients may not reapply. “AQHA and Zoetis are proud of this prestigious award,” said Craig Huffhines, AQHA executive vice president. "Ranchers work hard to raise the right kind of horses and this award is one way we can recognize
their loyalty and their contributions to the breed.” The award, presented by AQHA Corporate Partner Zoetis, made its debut in 1992 when Haythorn Land & Cattle Co. of Arthur, Nebraska, took home the honor. Since the award's inception, a total of 24 ranches have been recognized for their efforts in raising American Quarter Horses. The 2016 award was formally presented to the Bartlett Ranch during the 2016 Working Ranch Cowboys Association World Championship Ranch Rodeo November 10-13 in Amarillo. Bartlett Ranch will also be recognized during the 2017 National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Convention February 1-3 in Nashville. Read about the 2016 Zoetis AQHA Best Remuda Award recipient, Bartlett Ranch. As a proud partner of AQHA, Zoetis cares about the well-being of your horse and understands the serious consequences of disease. In addition to being the official equine and cattle vaccine provider of AQHA, Zoetis is pleased to offer the Equine Immunization Support Guarantee. Learn more about the Equine Immunization Guarantee.

DOES GETTING OLDER HAVE TO FEEL LIKE THIS? As our bodies age, the amount of testosterone produced decreases, resulting in a number of symptoms, including: brain fog, anxiety, irritability, depression, loss of muscle, fatigue, inflammation, weight gain, memory loss, insomnia, low libido and low energy. Although many physicians simply dismiss these symptoms as part of the aging process, bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) can be used to treat and even reverse these symptoms by restoring your hormone levels to normal ranges.
IS IT RIGHT FOR ME?
A simple blood test can help confir whether BHRT can help you regain your health and vitality. Once your hormone levels are determined, we can identify the amount of testosterone your body needs and address the benefits and risks of BHRT for your situation.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
While traditional hormone therapy has been around for a long time, BHRT pellet implantation is the most convenient, efficient method available. With BHRT, pellets of compressed hormone powder are inserted under your skin, providing a steady dose of bio-identical hormones directly into the bloodstream via circulation. This regulated delivery mimics your body’s natural processes and avoids the roller coaster-like actuation of hormones experienced with oral hormone pills or topical creams. Patients receiving BHRT can expect to feel relief from symptoms as early as one week after implantation, and each pellet lasts for 3 to 6 months.
IS IT SAFE?
Yes, bio-identical hormones are a safer alternative than traditional synthetic hormones. Why? When developing synthetic hormones, pharmaceutical companies intentionally alter the molecular structure of the hormones so they can patent the product. By contrast, bio-identical hormones are molecularly identical to hormones produced naturally by your body, making BHRT the safest, most natural way to manage hormone deficiencies. The side effects of bio-identical hormones are mild and easily managed by dose adjustment. BHRT may also offer long-term health benefits; bio-identical hormones restore the protective benefits originally provided by your naturally occurring hormones, such as a reduced risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and breast cancer.
BRT IN WOMEN?
Conventional wisdom has designated testosterone a “male” hormone, but in reality, a woman’s physiologic health is dependent on a steady supply of testosterone. In fact at a woman’s reproductive peak, she produces more testosterone than estrogen. As women age, however, their testosterone levels begin to decline. Because females are more sensitive to testosterone, a small drop in testosterone can have serious effects on a woman’s health, including increased in ammation and body fat, low libido, lethargy, a decrease in muscle mass and bone density, and problems regulating body temperature. BHRT can help reverse these menopausal symptoms and improve a woman’s quality of life.
BRT IN MEN?
Beginning at age 30, a man’s body makes less testosterone. By age 50, many men experience a significant drop in testosterone known as “andropause” or male menopause. With this drop, many men begin to experience clear signs of low testosterone, such as decreased sex drive and erectile dysfunction. Low testosterone can also cause an increase in abdominal fat, anemia, and in ammation, and a decline in muscle mass and bone density. These symptoms can be treated and even eliminated by normalizing testosterone levels. In addition, despite the claim that increased testosterone makes men angry or violent, testosterone has actually been shown to improve friendliness by decreasing irritability, nervousness, and fatigue.

AQHA Executive Vice President Craig Huffhines shares a few highlights of projects that your AQHA Executive Committee and staff accomplished in 2016 I hope everyone had a blessed holiday season and, like myself, I hope you had the opportunity to spend time with loved ones and reflect on 2016. Last year, your AQHA staff made a commitment to work diligently to put you, our leadership and our AQHA members, first. With a servant heart and an old-school work ethic, our staff committed to making AQHA the association you want it to be. Aside from the amazing work our staff does every day, additional ground work was done to put a team together to hit major modernization priorities of our organization. Here are just a few highlights that your AQHA Executive Committee and staff accomplished in 2016 to go along with the vast amount of program work already in the pipeline: AQHA Management and Technology staff members were added to assist with the day-today computing operations of the organization and to help Dell Computer Services enhance the deliverables for the new state-ofthe-art EQUUS 4.0 database. AQHA has embarked on the modernization of the thousands of old-format IBM database files into a robust accessible modern database that can be used for marketing research, corporate partner support, day-to-day operations and member service development. The project is approximately 65 percent complete with a heavy ramp-up in the last leg of development this spring. I am so proud of the extra hours our IT team has put into the ongoing testing of this product throughout its development. The team members have worked tirelessly with development teams in Vancouver and India to get this right. Hiring of an AQHA Youth Development Team was a top priority for AQHA. Katie Reynolds, formerly with the San Antonio Livestock Show & Rodeo, along with Jacy Bradford, an ag communications major and student recruiter from Oklahoma State University, were hired to take on the challenge of reinventing
FEBRUARY 2017
Craig Huffhines youth engagement at AQHA. These two ladies have been evaluating our current youth programs and surveying our youth membership to lay the ground work for strategy that will attract young people to our horse and to our membership. This will be a major topic of discussion at the upcoming AQHA convention. Hiring Chief Racing Officer Janet VanBebber, a long time trainer and business owner, is paying early dividends. Janet and the AQHA Racing Department worked tirelessly to pull through this year’s Challenge Championship races at Las Alamitos under a new out-of-competition hair-testing protocol that assured that our finalist horses were clean of performance-enhancing drugs. In addition, Janet assembled the very first round-table meeting of the major Quarter Horse jurisdiction racing commission leadership to discuss AQHA’s goals for medication uniformity across the country. Perhaps for the first time, we are beginning to develop consensus among states on how to unify the industry and protect the sport and our horse from medication abuse. Carl Mullins, our new chief publishing officer, spent 2016 restructuring the entire magazine sales team and their approach toward rebuilding the AQHA publications business. Two new magazines were launched to rave reviews, Ranch Horse Journal and Performance Horse Journal. The strategy to customize special publications is designed to target the varied interests of our membership and customers. New American Quarter Horse Foundation staff were added under Chief Foundation Officer Brent Davisson: Catherine Meck, a former business school Foundation developer from West Texas A&M University in Canyon; Meghan Kellett, a former continued on page 76

she will begin the process this month of surveying the needs of our 40,000 international members. In December, we also announced that Patti Carter is succeeding Alex Ross as director of judges. Alex announced his retirement in November. First, I want to say it has been a privilege for me to work with Alex. I have been impressed in the way that he and Pete Kyle have improved our judges and stewards training, certification and monitoring programs. We are excited about Patti bringing her talents, expertise and personality to the continued improvement and understanding of our judges and stewards. AQHA’s marketing team has worked on the development of an AQHA Horseback Riding Program smartphone app that will be launched this year. The app will allow HBR members to automatically document and log their riding hours and send that information to AQHA electronically.

Robin Glenn Pedigrees, AQHA’s wholly owned subsidiary, created a state-of-the-art catalog builder that will save countless hours by automating the pedigree-building process. There is nothing like this technology in the business, and we are excited at what it can do for sales management and reducing labor cost and stress in meeting catalog deadlines. These are just a few of the things I wanted to bring to your attention while we continue to work on strategy for growing our Ranching Heritage and Versatility Ranch Horse programs under Kim Lindsey’s leadership, and while the AQHA Competition Department under Chief Show Officer Pete Kyle continues to enhance our leveling, judging and steward programs along with our world show events. I look forward to another year of progress ahead. See you soon in San Antonio for the 2017 AQHA Convention!

You may think I am asking you about an energy drink but I am not. This month’s subject is about battery’s and the cables that attach to them. Strictly Diesel has been seeing a lot of battery concerns the last few months. Issues like hard starts, slow starts, no starts, and even computer issues have been very common. The picture you see was the topper for me. This truck had

morning and the truck would not start. But here is a little secret with this truck. It needed two batteries, they were both bad, and a set of good battery cables that had been un-modified. We tend to have it in

our heads that batteries should last an infinite amount of time, after all they are under warranty for 2-6 years depending on who you got them from. Batteries, and the cables that attach to them, do wear out over time. These items wear out over time from heat in the engine bay, usage of the vehicle, accessories, (like radio’s, radio amp’s, light bars, winches, battery cable repairs and so on). All of these things tax the charging system of the truck on a daily basis. “Battery cable ends (as seen above) are a good example, should NEVER be used. This type of cable end allows moisture and battery acid to easily enter the cables over time, adds resistance to the circuit and does not hold the cable tightly enough. These should be used only in a pinch, and only as a short term fix… never as a long term repair.” Here are a couple of tips to help you. 1. Always replace your batteries when they fail with the same or better CCA number (cold cranking amps) as what originally came on the truck. The old adage of “you get what you pay for” speaks loudly here. If your truck came with an 850 CCA battery, make sure it gets the same when it comes time to replace it. 2. Clean your batteries at least once a month with a can of coke, or baking soda mixed in water. Watch the science experiment happen and enjoy - rinse the battery off with water when you are done. This will help prevent corrosion from building up on the battery over time, causing damage to the cables, and the batteries themselves. 3. Make sure the battery cables are tight on the battery post. You should not be able to wiggle the cable on the battery post when tight. If you see swelling in the cable, replace it, corrosion is inside the cable at that point and it needs to be replaced. Don’t forget that Strictly Diesel can help as well. Let our qualified technicians look the charging system of your truck over for any concerns. We will save you dollars, and keep you on the road for miles! Give Strictly Diesel a call today! 623-582-4404

Polylast™ SurfaceGuard with Microban® Antimicrobial Technology When performance matters, safety and comfort are key! Whether it’s in your trailer, wash racks, aisle ways, or any other locations that your horses frequent, Polylast™ offers the best slip-resistant surface available. The Polylast™ cushioning effect absorbs 40% to 50% of the impact shock on your horse’s hooves, which means that even horses with hoof or leg soreness are more comfortable. Since your horses don’t have to strain to maintain their footing they can be more relaxed and ready to perform even better! No mats are used in a Polylast™ floored trailer so there are no mats to pull, clean and replace. Imagine never having to pull mats again! This porous surface allows fluids to flow through, and eliminates the need for any bedding, saving you time and money on bedding and labor. This also means your horses breathe cleaner air and stay cleaner.
“
What I like about Polylast flooring is the secure footing for the horses, and the comfort. When I get to a rodeo, my horses are ready to go. But the main thing I like about Polylast is that it is shavings free. I have rodeoed all my life and have had to use shavings to absorb the urine, but having Polylast flooring eliminates all of the shavings in your trailers.

Zoetis: Lepto Vaccine May Be Used With All Mares The equine leptospirosis vaccine Lepto EQ Innovator from Zoetis fights Leptospira interrogans serovar Pomona. The equine leptospirosis vaccine Lepto EQ Innovator is now approved for use in broodmares during the entire pregnancy, manufacturer Zoetis Inc. reported.
“Leptospires can cause late-term abortion in mares,” said Jacquelin Boggs, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACVIM, a senior veterinarian in Zoetis’ equine technical services. “The expanded label claim allows the equine breeding community the flexibility to use Lepto EQ Innovator to fit their breeding program’s needs and help elevate antibody titer levels when most needed.”Jacquelin Boggs, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACVIM, a senior veterinarian in Zoetis’ equine technical services. “The expanded label claim allows the equine breeding community the flexibility to use Lepto EQ Innovator to fit their breeding program’s needs and help elevate antibody titer levels when most needed.” The vaccine was previously approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for use in horses 6 months or older and through the second trimester. The vaccine is the only one formulated to fight Leptospira interrogans serovar Pomona (L. Pomona). Thirteen percent of bacterial abortions are caused by L. pomona, the company stated. Zoetis also makes equine vaccines such as Fluvac Innovator and West Nile-Innovator.

methods of training that benefit their horse’s ultimate lightness, strength, impulsion, and collection…building blocks for success no matter the discipline. There are riding lessons and an exciting array of activities, both classical and those reflecting Manuel’s Spanish heritage. LEVADE, CABRIOLE, TERREA-TERRE, high school movements that are rarely seen today except for places like the Spanish Riding School in Vienna are often discussed at ECR. Foundational work for these high school movements are the basis of Manuel’s training program. On any given day at the academy, one might observe the more experienced horses and riders striving to perform at that level. In addition, lessons and clinics for GARROCHA, REJONEO, WORKING EQUITATION are offered for the serious, but fun-loving horse and rider. Supplementing the training and teaching by Manuel, adjunct instruction in Pilates, Fencing, and Drumming is offered to support the riders at ECR in developing their personal riding skills. Pilates for core strength and rider balance. Fencing for centering and balance. Drumming develops rhythm while unmounted to assist riders in coordinating the movements and timing of their hands and feet to help create the separation of aids that riding in lightness requires. For more information, check out www.elcaballorey.com and www.trigomanuel.com for more information. To arrange a tour of the academy, call Wendy Dinnerstein (?) at 480/290-2110. The seventh annual A Legacy of Legends gathering to honor Ray Hunt’s colt-starting techniques is March 3-5 in Fort Worth, Texas. Jaton Lord, Reata Brannaman and Nathan Greiner will be among 30 other participants starting colts at the 2017 Gathering. (Bridle Horse Photography photo) “Ray just loved his colt-starting classes. He believed it was the most important thing you could do for the horse and that how you went about it determined the rest of that horse’s life,” said Carolyn Hunt, who along with Buck Brannaman co-founded A Legacy of Legends. Together they produce the annual gathering that

celebrates the legacy of Ray Hunt and his mentor, Tom Dorrance. The 2017 Gathering is March 3-5 at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas. This year’s event features an invitational colt starting that will run all three days. Carolyn is quick to point out this won’t be a competition, and that it will not have any time constraints. Each invitee will draw one horse to work with throughout the three days and will move at whatever pace fits their particular horse.

“What Ray could get done with a bunch of colts was amazing. By not forcing anything on them, he could keep them in a good frame of mind that allowed them to willingly accept new experiences. Ray used to say if he could expose a colt to one new thing in a relaxed way, then he could expose him to something else, and then something else. There wasn’t any time limit, but he could get a lot done in the span of a clinic by just allowing the horse his dignity,” said Carolyn. Many now practice this approach, passed from Tom Dorrance to Ray Hunt and from Ray Hunt to the world. Some Hunt-trained horsemen are famous and some are virtually unknown, but all are trying to carry on the legacy of compassion and understanding handed down from two of the greatest horsemen to ever live. Early in 2016, Carolyn and Brannaman sat down and made a list of names of horsemen they wanted to invite to the event. There were many they knew personally, but there were just as many they didn’t know who were recommended by other highly respected horsemen who had worked directly with Ray or Tom. More than 30 horsemen were invited to Fort Worth and demonstrate their interpretation of what Tom and Ray taught. Bill Smith, Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world champion saddle bronc rider and his brother, rodeo champion and coach Rick Smith, will be the masters of ceremony. As highly respected horsemen and early followers of both Dorrance and Hunt, they have plenty of knowledge and recollections to share with the audience. Proceeds from the event help support the Legacy of Legends Scholarship Program, which pairs students with mentors who studied with either of the two legends. “It’s so rewarding to see Ray and Tom’s teachings being passed along and shared the way they intended, and this year, with how we’re doing the colt starting, it’s going to be especially meaningful and exciting,” Carolyn said. In the 2 previous articles we have stated the following major points regarding Pulsed ElectroMagnetic Field therapy : (1) PEMF therapy has nothing to do with stationary magnets that either attract or repeal metals such as iron. (2) Not any PEMF device is therapeutic or risk-free. (3) Weak PEMFs generated outside the body have the capacity to effectively, safely and inexpensively influence a wide variety of injuries and conditions in a manner that enhances healing and recovery, and may contribute to the reduction in the use of drugs for both acute pain and chronic pain. (4) It is time for health professionals to keep up with published research on bioelectromagnetics and to add PEMF therapy to their therapy tool box.

Weak Signal - Big Response Part 3 - by Mac Stein, PT
weak signal PEMF therapy exerts its effect on specific injuries and conditions, some of the more recent research findings are mind-blowing in terms of potential future applications. Just google “Translational Medicine” to briefly familiarize yourself with another evolving branch of medicine. Here is an example: It has been known for a while that water ( as it exists in and around cells of the body) is not simply a collection of H2O molecules. Some of those molecules have properties different from the rest of the water molecules. It has also been shown that water has the capacity to absorb and retain some signals applied to it. Weak PEMF is one such signal and it has been speculated that once it has “memorized” such information, water has the capacity to transfer it to other biological systems. A group of researchers used a technology that is available mainly in research institutes to capture the electromagnetic information in a drug that is frequently used to treat urinary tract infection (UTI). That information was transferred to a pure water solution. A group of patients with UTI were given a very small amount of that solution to drink for7 days. Without getting too deep into the research methodology and its validity, the majority of these patients showed after 7 days an improvement in their signs and symptoms as if they have actually taken the drug. While this is an exciting finding, it is nowhere near ready for clinical use. It does, however, hint at the immense potential of exogenous PEMF therapy, which Big Pharma would probably fight

nail-and-tooth. It may be possible to apply a similar rational and methods to vaccinations. Biofilm is another term you may want to check on. It is a colony formed by microorganisms during infection. There are several research papers pointing at the ability and effectiveness of weak signal PEMF to minimize the risk and/ or combat the formation of biofilm formation of artificial joint implants.
Bowed Tendon Treatment Be it a tendon or ligament tear, a hard-to-heal wound or the signs and symptoms of arthritis – most of the published research on PEMF therapy deals with weak signal PEMF therapy, mainly Radio Frequency (RF) of very low intensity and frequency. People ask about those high voltage fancy machines that make an audible click when you hold the round coil at the end of the cable close to the horse’s body, and each time you hear a click you see a brief muscle twitch. These are PEMF devices, but not PEMF therapy devices. All the research they site was done with devices totally different from theirs. To claim that the FDA has approved PEMF is very misleading. FDA approves specific PEMF therapy devices, not the concept of PEMF. Just like it approves a specific medication/drug, not a blanket approval for a group of chemicals and pharmaceuticals. These “bells-and-whistles” devices are closer to military use than to therapy, akin to using a machete in the sandwich shop or kicking the door down when you can open the door by simply inserting a key. How many times can you kick the door down ? These devices work for some injuries some of the time but there are risks associated with it and some undesirable side-effects that
FEBRUARY 2017
most people – including those who operate these devices – are unaware of. Suffice it to say that several academic research institutes have been working hard at experimenting with killing tumor cells with this technology and the main obstacle is not finding a way to not harm adjacent healthy cells. You may want to check on Old Dominion University Frank Reidy Research Institue. They are experimenting with just few seconds of treatment with nano seconds duration of each pulse, which poses several technological difficulties. As mentioned in the first article – too little may not be enough and too much may be toxic and dangerous. Those clicking high power devices you see advertised are basically fancy suitcases housing a capacitor that keeps recharging and discharging like a camera flash light to the tune of tens of thousands of watts. Why they sell for $$$$$ ? basically, because some are willing to pay. Any electrician could probably make you one for under $500, and be held liable. Patients report a temporary reduction of pain after MRIs yet medical institutions try to limit the number of times a patient undergoes an MRI test, as they are concerned with the cumulative amount of strong electromagnetic radiation the patient is exposed to. Back to the more mundane application of weak signal PEMF therapy to equine soft tissue injuries: Tendon injuries, suspensory ligament injuries and spinal pain cases as diagnosed by your veterinarian consistently benefit from this therapy tool. Devices such as HealFast should be correctly applied as soon as possible after the injury occurs in order to maximize benefit. Initially secure the device with vetrap or strips of good quality vinyl tape and then properly apply a standing wrap to protect the device. If some skin warmth and/or sweating is present upon removal of the wrap – this is not a sign of worsening of the injury, especially if the device is applied over a muscle belly such as in the back. For prolonged use on other body parts that are hard to wrap (elbow, shoulder, belly, back, rump and face) you may use cattle cement (some use crazy glue tacks), vinyl tape or equine kinesiotape. More specific information for you and for your veterinarian and physician is always available at msteinpt.com Mac Stein is a physical therapist specializing in orthopedic sports injuries and animal physical therapy. The Sossaman Family Wins Arizona Farm Bureau Heritage Award
Arizona - This fall, The Sossaman Family of Maricopa County, Steve and Sharla Flake of Navajo County, Ray Tyler of Greenlee County, and Pete Brawley of Graham County recently received the Arizona Farm Bureau Heritage Award during the organization's 95th Annual conference celebrating farmers and ranchers throughout the state at the Wigwam Resort and Conference Center. The Heritage Award is given to individuals and families that are involved in agriculture and have given extraordinary voluntary service to their industry and to their Farm Bureau. The first recipients were the Sossaman Family. Jasper and Nancy Sossaman, originally from Oklahoma, came to Arizona looking for a better life in 1914 after their pig farm near Galveston, Texas, was wiped out in a hurricane. Shortly thereafter, another tragedy hit in 1918, when Jasper passed away, leaving Nancy and three sons to manage by themselves. Luckily, homesteads became available in Queen Creek, and the family obtained two. Gradually, they extended the farm to 1,000 acres and grew cotton, watermelon, potatoes, Durham wheat, castor beans, corn and sugar beets. One of the three sons, also named Jasper, married Faith Mather and continued farming. Their only child, Jamie, inherited the farm in 1962. Son Steven and wife Chris now manage the farm with innovative marketing of heritage grains. Jamie and Steve both served as presidents of Maricopa County Farm Bureau and on the state board. Besides farming, Jamie served 24 years in the state Legislature, both in the House where he served as Speaker, and in the Senate. In 1992, the Arizona Farm Bureau recognized Jamie for his Distinguished Service to Agriculture. His wife, Sue, was also active in county politics. Over the years the farm has always been an innovative family-centered business run by people who cared not just for the land, but also for the community. Flake Family, Navajo County The second recipients were Steve and Sharla Flake. Steve and Sharla are fourth generation ranchers in Snowflake, Arizona. Steve spent his career ranching and farming, most of it with his brothers, Dean, Jake, and Jed. They spent most of their career raising purebred Beef Masters.

In the late 1980's the Navajo County Farm Bureau was struggling with membership, and Steve volunteered to be the county president. Over the next 10 years, he helped build county membership and county funds. He served on the State Board for many years, and he and Sharla have been on the Navajo County Board for the thirty plus years. Tyler Family, Greenlee County The third recipient was Ray Tyler. Ray was raised on a dairy farm in Fort Thomas and Tolleson and has always had a love for farming. He grew his first cotton crop while still in high school. After graduating from Tolleson High School in 1958 he served a two-year mission for the LDS Church in the Eastern States and served 4 years in the Army with a tour in Vietnam. Ray met his wife-to-be, Janette Barney of Duncan, at Arizona State University while she was working as a secretary in the Chemistry Department. They married July 12, 1968, and moved to start their life and farming together. They purchased land from Janette's parents, and bought a few head of cattle. Besides farming Ray owned a chemical and fertilizer business, Duncan Valley Growers, for many years. Shortly after moving to the Duncan area, Ray and Janette joined Farm Bureau. They have been active members since that time. Ray has served several times on the County Farm Bureau Board and as Vice President. At 77, Ray farms is actively farming 500 acres. Through the years he has raised cotton, alfalfa, oats, wheat, corn and maize. He also owns and partners on 20 sections of ranch land in the Black Hills. Brawley Family, Graham County The fourth recipient was Pete Brawley. Pete was born in 1930, and in 1935 his family moved from Oklahoma to Duncan, Arizona. He attended Duncan high school graduating in 1948. He was given a partial scholarship to play basketball at the University of Arizona, but left after his first year and enrolled at Eastern Arizona College to continue his education. There he met Loretta John and the couple married in 1950. It was Loretta's father that introduced Pete to ranching when he invited Pete and Loretta to move to Colorado to help take care of a ranch. In 1962, Pete left Colorado and returned to Arizona to manage ranches for Rex Ellsworth.

A Tradition of Excellence Bringing equestrian excellence to San Diego County since 1946, the Del Mar National stands among the handful of horse shows in this country to reach its golden years. However, retirement isn’t even under consideration for this golden oldie! Over the years, Del Mar has earned its reputation for being among the toughest, most exciting, finest, and richest horse shows in Southern California. With its worldclass, multidisciplinary equestrian competition and signature Saturday evening performances, Del Mar ranks high among the most prestigious horse shows in the western region. A Del Mar win merits bragging rights as well as literal and figurative currency. Many of today’s horse show superstars rode here as juniors, amateurs, and lead-line competitors. While watching young riders compete, you may actually be witnessing tomorrow’s champions. Many spectators continue to purchase ringside box seats year after year
as an established family tradition. Riders often reminisce about showing at Del Mar, whether as a child or professional. These qualities help create the ambiance associated with this show and are what make it truly exceptional. The superb coastal weather and the show’s proximity to the storied thoroughbred racetrack founded by a legendary group of friends — Bing Crosby, Pat O’Brien, and Jimmy Durante — only heighten the charm. The Del Mar National began as part of the annual San Diego County Fair. In 1946, 350 competitors rode for their chance to win a slice of the $20,000 pie and to earn points toward becoming ultimate show champions. By 1979, the Del Mar National had become so popular, it eventually outgrew the county fair and became a separate event. The show and the venue have continually evolved over the years. The rings and locations, along with the breeds and variety of disciplines have changed over the years as Del Mar’s unique character took shape and grew into the icon it has become. Today, the show hosts three distinctly different weeks of competition; Western, Dressage, and Hunter/Jumper.

The 2016 Ranching Heritage Breeder of the Year award will be formally presented to Willow Creek Ranch and Box O Quarter Horses at the 2017 AQHA Convention. (Photo courtesy of Andrea Caudill) Box O Quarter Horses of Gordon, Nebraska, are the 2016 AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder of the Year. The award, which is presented by the American Quarter Horse Association and the AQHA Ranching Committee, recognizes the Ranching Heritage Breeders who continue to uphold the ranching tradition. Box O Quarter Horses is owned and operated by Jecca and Cash Ostrander. The Ostranders care for 800 head of Angus-Limousin-cross cattle and have a remuda of 45 registered American Quarter Horses they breed and use for daily ranch work. The Ostranders joined the AQHA Ranch Heritage Breeder’s program in 2011 and began competing in Zoetis AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenges. They are also donors to the AQHA Ranching Heritage Young Horse Development Program. “We’re proud to present the inaugural Ranching Heritage Breeder of the Year Award to the Box O,” said Jim Hunt, AQHA Ranching Committee chairman. “The Ostrander family is dedicated to the ranching industry and personifies the characteristics of this award. We appreciate all the hard-working families who are Ranching Heritage Breeders.” The Ostranders will receive a custom-designed Montana Silversmiths buckle on March 18 during the awards presentation banquet at the Grand Hyatt.
