Arizona's Own - Extreme Wylene

Her effervescent personality has garnered her the name Extreme Wylene and her colt starting talent secured her a position as a Road to the Horse 2020 Wild Card. Competing at Road to the Horse has been a lifelong dream for Arizona born cowgirl Wylene Davis and in 2020 that dream will become a reality. Davis is the second of three Wild Cards who will compete for the Road to the Horse 2020 Wild Card title at the Kentucky Horse Park on March 19-22, 2020. Wild Cards will compete for a cash prize and a coveted main competitor position at Road to the Horse 2021. “Competing at Road to the Horse is something I’ve been dreaming about for years. I’m excited to showcase my ability and cowgirl style, developed through a lifetime of preparation and practice” states Wylene Davis. “It’s an honor to be part of this prestigious event.” Davis will join fellow Wild Card Cole Cameron, and a third Wild Card who will be released shortly. Road to the Horse 2020 Wild Cards will each start an untouched 6666 Ranch colt, during three days of competition, in true Road to the Horse style. Fans will be able to watch every minute of colt-starting action from these talented first-time Road to the Horse competitors, as they each bring their own unique style of horsemanship to the competition.

WestWorld in Running to host FEI World Championships in 2022

A total of 10 countries have put in formal bids to host the FEI World Championships 2022, including two proposals to host the multidiscipline FEI World Equestrian Games™. Bidding countries are Denmark, Estonia, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, the Netherlands, United Arab Emirates, and the United States of America.

More than 20 years after Rome stepped in as host city of the FEI World Equestrian Games™ 1998 following Ireland’s late withdrawal, the Italians are looking to once again host the full Games. The Saudi Arabian capital city of Riyadh is also in the running having put forward an all-discipline bid for 2022. “The number of formal bids that we’ve received for single and multi-discipline FEI World Championships and full Games is an excellent indication that the interest in the World Championships is as strong if not stronger than ever”, FEI President Ingmar De Vos said. “We knew that some of the countries that put in expressions of interest back in February were just dipping their toes in the water, but these formal bids are a great validation of the new bidding process and show that we have a really strong product.” The FEI initiated a bidding process for individual World Championships in all disciplines for 2022 after the FEI General Assembly in Manama (BRN) in November 2018. The FEI Board decided that multi-discipline bids would 10

be given preference, and that Dressage and Para Dressage should be combined. The World Championships in 2022 in the Olympic and Paralympic disciplines will serve as qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The new bid process allows for the sustainable and cost-effective use of existing equestrian sports facilities, and was put in place to provide the opportunity for the FEI to partner with National Federations that may have hesitated to put forward multidiscipline bids in the past. In a key change to the bid procedure, the FEI hosted an interactive workshop at the end of March 2019 in Lausanne for all National Federations/Organising Committees that had submitted an expression of interest. The workshop provided interested parties with detailed information of the structure, opportunities and minimum requirements for hosting the FEI World Championships 2022. By working more closely with the National Federations and Organising Committees from the outset, the FEI and its stakeholders can establish an achievable set of goals and work towards a unified vision for 2022. All bids will be fully evaluated over the summer and allocation of FEI World Championships 2022 will be made at the in-person Board meeting during the FEI General Assembly in Moscow (RUS) in November this year.

About Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) www.fei.org The FEI is the world governing body for horse sport recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and was founded in 1921. Equestrian sport has been part of the Olympic movement since the 1912 Games in Stockholm. The FEI is the sole controlling authority for all international events in the Olympic sports of Jumping, Dressage and Eventing, as well as Driving, Endurance, Vaulting and Reining. The FEI became one of the first international sports governing bodies to govern and regulate global para sport alongside its seven able-bodied disciplines when Para Dressage joined its ranks in 2006. The FEI now governs all international competitions for Para Dressage and Para Driving.

Butch & Sundance Go South Butch Cassidy (left)—real name Robert Leroy Parker—was a Jack-Mormon hustler from Beaver, Utah who teamed up with The Sundance Kid (right) (real name Harry Longabaugh) to rob banks and trains. Together they were the leaders of The Wild Bunch and after a successful run, they decided to try South America and using the proceeds from a robbery they went to Argentina with a beautiful Etta Place. For about eight years they robbed their way through several countries until 1908, when everything caught up with them.

The last Supper

It’s interesting that the two Americanos ordered beer and sardines. When in a foreign land, moving quickly from one zone to another, it is best not to drink the water. The compact meal obviously was meant to sustain them on the run, until they could get to a bigger city, in this case Oruro and La Paz. The two outlaws were used to hardship in the wilds of South America and the description of their mules being jaded speaks to their hard-riding ways.

The Last Showdown

The two “Americanos” renting a room from Bonifacio Casasola are going by the names of Frank Boyd, a.k.a. H.A. Brown and Maxwell (no given first name). Boyd had been Sundance’s alias in Chile. Brown and Maxwell were aliases both men used in northern Bolivia. As the three Uyuni posse members approached the Casasola home, one of the Yankees suddenly appeared in the doorway and opened fire, hitting Victor Torres in the neck. Shots were exchanged as more townsmen were called to surround the casita. Then, the besiegers heard an anguished scream and two more shots from inside the dwelling. In the morning, officials found the bodies of the two Yankees. Both men were wounded and some surmise one of them shot the other one and then shot himself. The next afternoon the dead outlaws were buried in the local cemetery.

Soon after arriving in Cholila, Butch and Sundance registered three brands: (from top to bottom) Sundance (Place), Butch and Sundance (Ryan and Place) and Butch (Ryan). – FROM THE GUIA DE LA PATAGONIA/COURTESY DANIEL BUCK AND ANNE MEADOWS –

From Cowboys to Yankee Rebels

Carlos Pero, the payroll manager at the Aramayo Francke & Company, describes the two bandits who robbed the payroll near Dead Cow Hill: “The two Yankees wore new, dark-red thin-wale corduroy suits with narrow, soft-brimmed hats, the brims turned down in such a way that with the bandannas tied behind their ears, only their eyes could be seen...both of them carried new carbines, which appeared to be of the Mauser-type...but they were completely new...The bandits also carried Colt revolvers, and I believe they also had very small Browning revolvers outside their cartridge belts, which were filled with rifle ammunition.”Both Butch and Sundance wore gaiters instead of boots. WHY RISK IT

CLEAN ARENAS MAKE FOR HEALTHY HORSES HOW IT WORKS

A Service to Improve Your Footing

We’ll pull into your existing arena and allow Rockyln to do her thing…Pick up rocks. With her pristine design, she is able to pick up a variety of rock sizes, as small as 3/8 going up to 6 inches deep of the surface sifting through without removing your footing. Rocklyn employs a sifting technology used to lift the existing footing from your arena on to a special/secret screen. The screen then sifts the unwanted rock from the arena, while the footing returns to the arena, and the remaining debris is deposited in the bucket. We’ll gather the rock and neatly pile it up for easy removal. She’s built of steel to ensure durability and consistency.

‘Yellowstone’ Season 2 Premiere Sets More Ratings Records For Paramount Network In Live+3

Yellowstone continues to rewrite entries in Paramount Network’s ratings record books. In Live+3, the drama’s Season 2 opener set a premiere viewership high as well series highs among all key demos.

After slipping a notch from the series premiere in Live+Same Day (2.4 million vs. 2.8 million), the viewership for Yellowstone’s second-season debut eclipsed the series premiere by 6% in L+3 with a strong 109% DVR lift (5.036 million vs. 4.7 million). And after logging series highs in five of the six key demographics, the Season

2 opener of the Kevin Costnerstarring drama set new L+3 high marks in all six categories: adults 18-49, men 18-49, women 18-49, adults 25-54, men 25-54 and women 25-54. Yellowstone ranks as the most-watched original cable

entertainment telecast this summer and the highest-rated among P2554, M25-54, and M18-49. Here are the L3 demo ratings for Yellowstone’s Season 2 premiere with increases vs. L+SD and vs. Season 1 premiere L+3 numbers: P18-49: 1.7 rating (+49% vs. L+3 S1 premiere; +116% vs. L+SD S2 premiere) M18-49: 1.79 rating (+48% vs. L+3 S1 premiere; +101% vs. L+SD S2 premiere) W18-49: 1.61 rating (+50% vs. L+3 S1 premiere; +134% vs. L+SD S2 premiere) P25-54: 2.5 rating (+47% vs. L+3 S1 premiere; +120% vs. L+SD S2 premiere) M25-54: 2.67 rating (+49% vs. L+3 S1 premiere; +109% vs. L+SD S2 premiere) W25-54: 2.3 rating (+46% vs. L+3 S1 premiere; +133% vs. L+SD S2 premiere) Co-created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, Yellowstone follows the Dutton family, led by John Dutton (Oscar winner Costner), who controls the largest contiguous ranch in the U.S., under constant attack by those it borders – land developers, an Indian reservation and America’s first National Park.

Months after severe facial injury,

Chase Outlaw posts 2nd-Best Score at PBR Forget all the bright lights, pyrotechnics and screaming fans… Chase Outlaw is all cowboy; and one of the toughest athletes you'll ever meet. “You know, if you want to be good at this sport you've got to be tough,” Outlaw said. “You know, he was just proclaimed the toughest athlete in sports, and he deserves it,” said Sean Gleason, CEO of PBRT.” “That kid is tough, tough, tough.” Eight seconds is all it takes, just the 150-pound rider and a 2,000-pound bull. Last summer though, Outlaw and a bull knocked heads and the wreck literally broke every bone in his face.

“After the injury, they had to put 68 screws and 12 plates in my face, and unless I feel my face, I don't know I’ve got something else in it, Outlaw said. Add four pieces of surgical mesh to fully repair Outlaw's injuries. “When it happens, that's what separates the men from the boys and that's why we're here. To be able to block that out and overcome it and keep rolling on to the next one,” Outlaw stated. Remarkably, Outlaw only missed two and-a-half months on the Professional Bull Riders Tour. “Chase is a special case, but if you know any of these bull riders, they're tough kids and they want to bounce back and get back to riding those bulls,” said Gleason. “Quitting? Nah, that's one thing I’ve never wanted to do is quit,” Outlaw added.

5 Biosecurity Tips to keep your Traveling Horse Healthy How Standlee Hay Helps with Safety at Events

Every horse owner understands that there are biosecurity risks associated with taking your horse off farm. Whether it be for competition, trail riding or sale, each time horses move on and off farm, they are exposed to new environments, new people, new horses and potentially new germs. Although risks will never be completely eliminated, the following tips can help reduce the chance of your horse becoming ill.

1. Be sure your horse is healthy before leaving. Consult your veterinarian and be sure that your horse has had its complete suggested immunization protocol. Additionally, pay close attention to your horse’s behavior, as well as the behavior of the other horses at your barn, to be sure that no sudden changes in appetite or energy level are missed. If your horse is showing any signs of illness, you should never travel off the farm. 2. Clean the stall or area that your horse will be housed in at the show/sale. Upon arriving at a show, trail ride, exposition or sale, be sure to inspect the area that your horse will occupy for the next several hours or days. The first step would be to remove any and all organic matter (feces, bedding, feed) that may have been missed by the clean-up crew following the previous event. This is absolutely the most crucial step in ensuring a clean area. Other precautionary measures, such as spraying down the stall with a broad-spectrum disinfectant, can also eliminate some germs on surfaces. Additionally, if the stall or area includes buckets, feed pans, etc., those should ideally be removed and replaced by your own. 3. Maintain separate traveling items and home items. If you’re looking for an excuse to buy new, shiny brushes, sheets, blankets and buckets, here it is! Keeping these items separate and used only for traveling purposes (store them in your trailer when not in use) is a good way to keep germs out of your barn and away from your other horses. Another benefit is having all of your traveling equipment matching, and therefore more difficult to misplace or leave behind. Along those same lines, thorough cleaning of your own apparel (boots, jackets, gloves) will help prevent the spread of germs from place to place. You should be cautious of any clothing that you wear at the off-site event and then wear into your own barn. Simply taking off your jacket or spraying the organic matter off your boots is a great first step. 44

- Standlee Compressed hay bales in the Grab and Go bags are a good option to take to events because they are sealed in a plastic bag with a built in handle. This affords the hay to not become contaminated at the event, while also avoiding waste and cleanup. Hay and Feed on the ground can become contaminated from animals walking around the stalls, waste water and debris. Regular 3 tie hay bales in the open air or falling on the ground may become contaminated while at the event, and if taken back home, may bring the germs back with you in the trailer. Weighting in at 50 pounds the Standlee Hay is easy to transport, load and un-load while providing a safe and nutritious feed for your horse that is consistent from bale to bale - so there is no change in the feed while traveling. This hay comes in Alfalfa, Timothy, Orchard Grass & Alfalfa/Orchard Grass Mix. Standlee also offers a full line of pelleted, cubed and chopped hay forage in plastic bio-degradable bags. - Heading to a horse show? A camping trip? A competitive trail ride? Our compressed bales are easy to take along. Not only can you fit more forage in a smaller area than you can with traditional bales, but you’ll find that the fact that the bales are wrapped means you can store them just about anywhere – including in your trailer’s dressing room – without worry of getting forage everywhere. - When it comes to loading and unloading these bales, the handle that’s incorporated right into the exterior cover makes lifting the bales easy. No forage strings to cut into the palms of your hands, especially when you’re loading and unloading multiple bales. 4, Minimize the amount of feed and bedding that returns to the farm. It’s commonplace to bring extra hay, grain or bedding to the show or event with you, but be careful to not unload everything upon arrival. Leave the hay stored in your trailer until feeding and then you’ll have less concerns about packing up any unused hay at the end of the event. Although it may be tempting to bag up any clean, unused shavings or bedding at the end of a show, it is not ideal to take that back to your farm. 5. Keep traveling horses and on-farm horses separate, if possible. While this may not be the easiest tip to implement, it is ideal to keep horses that often travel away from horses that remain on the farm. The traveling horses are going to be exposed to a variety of germs throughout the traveling months, where the non-traveling horses may have immune systems less prepared to handle the new pathogens.

That’s a wrap on the 2019 Zoetis AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse World Championships. Exhibitors from 30 states and Costa Rica competed for seven VRH world championship titles, 42 VRH class championships, seven NRSHA all-around championships, eight Level 1 youth and eight Level 1 amateur class championships, and 18 Ranching Heritage Challenge championships. Plus AQHA Top Ranching Heritage Bred Horse Awards were presented to the overall highest placing horses in youth and amateur divisions of the Cattle Level 1 and the overall highest placing horse at the Zoetis VRH World. The Zoetis AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse World Championships ran June 18-23 at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma.

Between the 2019 Zoetis VRH World, Zoetis RHC Finals, Level 1 Cattle and NRSHA National Championships, nearly 400 horses and more than 350 exhibitors competed in a variety of ranch events, including ranch cutting, team roping, working cow horse and ranch conformation. There were more than 2,300 entries in the show and the purse reached nearly $210,000. “Congratulations to all of our competitors, these four ranch horse shows showcase the talent and skill of our ranching competitors,” said AQHA Chief Show Officer Pete Kyle. “We appreciate all of the exhibitors, owners, trainers and breeders for attending the show and want to congratulate them for their wins or for simply hitting personal bests at the 2019 Zoetis VRH World.” AQHA Professional Horsemen volunteered their time to give free Ride the Pattern clinics. These clinics gave exhibitors and spectators the perfect opportunity to learn how AQHA Professional Horsemen would approach a specific Zoetis VRH World pattern. Thanks to the generosity of the Ride the Pattern Clinics attendees, the AQHA Professional Horsemen’s Crisis Fund raised more than $500. You can also visit the Zoetis VRH World, Level 1 Cattle and Zoetis RHC Finals Facebook event pages to check out action from the shows.

An Important Message to Breeders' Cup Fans

Dear Valued Fan, Today the Breeders’ Cup Board of Directors unanimously affirmed its commitment to conduct the 2019 Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Santa Anita Park on November 1-2. This will mark the 10th time the event will be held at Santa Anita, the most of any host venue over the 36-year history of the Breeders’ Cup. To Steel or Not to Steel PART II B

y Lenny Alifi

This is Hoppi , a 1350 pound paint with the personality of a big sweet people magnet, much like a big dog . Hoppi has been barefoot for over a year before I placed his first set of shoes on .

I chose to apply golden wing horseshoes that had him change his attitude from walking on eggshells to being in a different mindset 'happy ' . I felt this was going to be a lesson in a whole different context that has the potential of changing the face of shoeing in the world would, that is beginning to catch on in countries throughout Europe and right here in our backyard, Arizona. The place where golden wing horseshoes

came to mind through many painstaking years of designing and going back and forth to the drawing board. My findings so far tells me that this is not a magic potion for fixing lameness on seriously damaged feet ,no really. As far as I know, perfect to keep any sport , running horse , jumpers etc., from developing serious problems that are common with steel 56

and aluminum. Problems that develop from shoes to long between intervals, or tight ,short fitting will force the horn structure to follow the path to least resistance. As with the material that makes up golden wing this is the exact opposite effects for it is so much like the hoof . I was happy with the condition inside the feet and it did not dehydrate spite the hot summer sun.

BLM estimates 88,090 wild horses and burros in 10 Western states – the largest population estimate since the 1971

The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board will meet July 9-11 in Boise, Idaho, and October 29-31 in Washington, D.C. The Board will discuss the pressing challenges of wild horse and burro management, including the number of unadopted and unsold animals in BLM facilities

60

and the effects of overpopulation on public lands. Both meetings will be livestreamed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time July 10-11 and October 30-31 at www.blm.gov/live. The BLM will host a site visit for the Advisory Board to a local wild horse herd management area on July 9.

The National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board is comprised of individuals representing a diverse range of stakeholders and interests. The Board provides advice and recommendations to the BLM as the agency carries out its responsibilities under the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and

JULY 2019

Burros Act. The law mandates the protection and management of these free-roaming animals in a manner that ensures healthy herds at levels consistent with the land’s capacity to sustainably support them as part of BLM’s multipleuse mission. As of March 1, 2019, the BLM estimated public rangelands were home to approximately 88,090 wild horses and burros in 10 Western states – the largest population estimate since the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act was passed – and more than three times the number the habitat can sustainably support in conjunction with other authorized land uses. At the same time, the BLM continues to care for approximately 50,000 unadopted and unsold animals in its offrange corrals and pastures, costing taxpayers $50 million annually – nearly two-thirds of the Wild Horse and Burro Program annual budget. The agendas of the upcoming meetings can be found in the June 7, 2019 Federal Register at www. federalregister.gov. More detailed agendas and materials will be posted on the BLM website at BLM.gov/WHB prior to each meeting. The July meeting will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn Downtown Boise, located at 348 S. 13th Street, Boise, Idaho 83702. The October meeting will be held at the Phoenix Park Hotel located at 520 North Capitol Street, NW, Washington, DC 20001 and at 20 F Street Conference Center located at 20 F Street, NW, Suite 1000, Washington, DC 20001. The public may address the Advisory Board on July 11 and October 31. Individuals who wish to comment should register in person with the BLM at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the public comment period on that same day at the meeting site. Depending on the number of speakers, the Board may limit the length of comments, which has been set at three minutes per person during previous meetings.

Pacheco Out Of Competition Following Elbow Surgery

BY : JUSTIN FELISKO JUNE 27, 2019

PUEBLO, Colo. – Reigning World Champion Kaique Pacheco has tried his best to stay positive during a tumultuous 2019 season that has not gone to plan. Pacheco’s pursuit of winning a second consecutive world title has hit another major snag this week. The 24-year-old underwent reconstructive left elbow (free

arm) surgery after being injured on June 14 at the PBR Brazil event in Americana. According to Dr. Tandy Freeman, Pacheco had extensive ligament and muscle injuries repaired Wednesday by Dr. John Conway in Dallas and that a “time to return to competition is undetermined at this point.” Pacheco did not want to speculate on how soon he could return, but did say he understands

his recovery could take a few months based on the severity of the injury. He is committed to a physical therapy process. “It is very difficult for me this year, but God knows what he has planned for me, and I am going to do my best to be back as soon as I can,” Pacheco said. Pacheco was injured after he dislocated his elbow following a 78.5-point ride on Tucuma in Brazil.

“I stayed on my bull, but at the time that I had to get off I landed on my elbow of my free arm,” Pacheco said with the help of Miriaham Garcia translating. “I dislocated my elbow and resulted in an injury. An MRI showed my ligaments and muscles were torn and that I needed surgery.” Pacheco acknowledged that 2019 has been hard for him. The 2015 PBR Rookie of the Year has been a perennial world title contender every year of his career until this season.

You can submit as many videos as you like, but each video should address only one maneuver. You may demonstrate how the maneuver is achieved or what it is and is not supposed to look like and add your own special way of helping riders understand the maneuver. Examples of a maneuver: Free Walk Free Jog Pivot Shoulder-In Half Pass Collected Lope Lope pirouette Turn on the forehand Flying lead change Simple lead change Working jog Choose a maneuver from the list or another one you have a great example of or a great way to teach about it. It can be a simple or complicated maneuver or a helpful hint. Begin the video clip with a shot of yourself and the introduction, “I am (name) from (farm, town, state) (website if you want) and I am going to show you the (maneuver)”. After that, say whatever you want to describe or teach the maneuver. It is our hope, this will give trainers some recognition on a national level and help our members learn about Western Dressage maneuvers. To submit a video clip just go to WDAA Social Corral on Facebook! You must be a WDAA member to have access to the Social Corral.

Today, Tom Lenz, DVM, MS, DACT, was named the recipient of the 2019 Equine Industry Vision Award. Zoetis presented the award to Dr. Lenz, in partnership with American Horse Publications (AHP), during the AHP Equine Media Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Zoetis established and sponsors the annual Equine Industry Vision Award, which showcases an individual’s or an organization’s innovation and commitment to making a positive impact on the equine industry.* “Zoetis is honored to present the Equine Industry Vision Award to Dr. Lenz for his tenured work and dedication to animal welfare and the humane, sensible treatment of horses,” said Nathan Voris, DVM, MBA, associate director of equine technical services at Zoetis. “Dr. Lenz’s integrity and ingenuity exemplify his commitment, dedication and service to the equine industry. At Zoetis, we strive to make a difference in the community and support organizations worldwide that share our commitment to bettering the welfare of animals.” Dr. Lenz has been a lifelong advocate for the health and welfare of the horse. While growing up on a beef cattle farm in central Missouri, becoming a veterinarian was always his goal. After graduating from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine in 1975, he began his career at a cattle and equine practice in California. Working with horses at this practice, his passion for equine health took root. This led Dr. Lenz back to Kansas City, Missouri, where he started his own equine practice. Throughout his professional life, Dr. Lenz was active in equine private veterinary practice, academia and industry. With a distinguished career as a prominent voice for the equine industry and horse welfare, Dr. Lenz has held numerous leadership roles for equine industry organizations. A past president of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), he also chaired the AAEP Welfare Committee. Dr. Lenz has served on or chaired the welfare committees of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the American Horse Council, the American Quarter Horse Association, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and more.

2019 Roemer Foundation/ USDF Hall of Fame Inductees Announced The United States Dressage Federation™ (USDF) announced today that Axel Steiner of San Marcos, CA, and Jane Savoie of Wellington, FL, make up the 2019 class of Roemer Foundation/USDF Hall of Fame Inductees. Axel and Jane will be recognized at the Salute Gala & Annual Awards Banquet, held at the 2019 Adequan®/USDF Annual Convention in Savannah, GA.

Established to honor and preserve the achievements of the people and horses that made outstanding contribution to the growth, development, quality, popularity, and appreciation of dressage in the United States, the Roemer Foundation/USDF Hall of Fame represents the most influential and dedicated within our sport, making Axel Steiner and Jane Savoie perfect candidates for induction. Axel Steiner is a USEF ‘S’ and retired FEI 5* Judge, having served as such for numerous Olympics, World Cup Finals, and Pan American Games. Born and raised in Wiesbaden, Germany, Axel immigrated to the United States in 1961, to join the Air Force. While there he started teaching basic horsemanship and dressage. In addition to becoming the first American judge to gain the FEI 5* classification, Axel is also one of the founders of USDF and has dedicated himself to the sport by having served as a member of USDF’s L Faculty since its inception, a longtime member and three-year chair of the USDF Judges Committee, and a member of the USEF Dressage Committee, including sub-committees dedicated to Test Writing, Rules, Young Horse, and Judge Education. In addition, Axel has also authored numerous articles for publications such as USDF Connection, Dressage Today, and The Chronicle of the Horse, as well as providing the forewords to several books. His wealth of knowledge and expertise, along with his contributions to the sport, only begin to scratch the surface of why Axel is so deserving of this induction. A high performance rider, who has represented and competed for the US as part of the United States Equestrian Team, Jane Savoie is also the author of six books, publisher of four videos and a collaborator on eight additional titles, all of which serve to connect with the adult amateur dressage rider. Through her experience, knowledge, and motivational speaking, Jane has continued to resonate with dressage riders in the USDF. Jane has been a long time member of USDF, as well as numerous USDF Group Member Organizations, and has dedicated herself to educating its members through her time as the lead instructor of the USDF Adult Clinic Series in 2007-2008, as well as serving as instructor for numerous USDF University events and convention education sessions. With Jane’s competitive experience, dedication to education, and her overall support of the sport and organization, she embodies the criteria for this prestigious induction. USDF would like to congratulate both Axel and Jane on their induction, and thank them for all of the contributions that they have made, and continue to make, to dressage in the US.

Is chemotherapy a viable treatment for lymphoma in horses? Lymphoma can be difficult to recognize initially, and is typically diagnosed after the disease has progressed

By David W. Ramey, DVM

Lymphoma—cancer of the lymphatic system—is a rare medical condition of horses. However, it also is the most common malignant neoplastic condition of the horse system. Horses of any age can be affected, although it more commonly appears earlier in life (from four to 10 years of age).

Lymphoma has several manifestations: multicentric, in the gastrointestinal tract, in the skin, and even in discrete settings. Lymphoma can be difficult to recognize initially, and is typically diagnosed after the disease has progressed, with clinical signs relative to the affected organ or tissue. Routine hematological analysis is often not helpful, as complete blood counts and serum

chemistry tests are usually normal. When hematological abnormalities do occur, they typically show as anemia, increased serum protein, and/or fibrinogen. Conversely, low serum protein levels may be seen, as well. A definitive diagnosis is made by identifying neoplastic lymphocytes, usually obtained by analysis of body fluid effusions (e.g. pleural or abdominal fluid, or by fine needle aspiration of

Fencing Arizona for Over 50 Years!

affected tissue[s]).

The prognosis for horses is usually poor, depending on the form of lymphoma, as well as how late in the disease process the horse is presented. There are several treatment options, including surgical removal of isolated, infected areas; radiation; or chemotherapy. Large doses of corticosteroids have been used as palliative care, as well. In some cases, complete resolution of the disease has been reported. Follow up on the response to treatment of equine lymphoma cases is rarely reported, probably due to the relatively rare nature of the disease.

What about chemotherapy?

In human oncology, chemotherapy is a mainstay of treatment. In horses, however, its use is less common. There are a few isolated case reports; however, until 2019, there was no study that evaluated the response to chemotherapeutic protocols in a larger number of horses. Now, Daniela Luethy, DVM, Dipl. ACVIM, from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, in Kennett Square, Pa., has published a retrospective study of 15 horses with a variety of lymphoma presentations, using a variety of chemotherapeutic protocols. The results suggest some optimism may be warranted when treating equine lymphoma patients with chemotherapeutic agents, especially when the condition is recognized early.

The study

Published in the March-April 2019 issue of the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine (JVIM), the retrospective study identified 15 cases of equine lymphoma in which adequate data for analysis was identified. The median age of the horses was 11 years (range, four to 25 years). There were six

A variety of chemotherapeutic agents were used to treat the horses, including: cyclophosphamide (nine horses); vincristine (nine horses); lomustine (eight horses); L-asparaginase (seven horses); doxorubicin (six horses); cytosine arabinoside (two horses); chlorambucil (one horse); and intralesional cisplatin (one horse). In addition, 12 of the treated horses received corticosteroids (prednisolone and dexamethasone), while three received valacyclovir, an antiviral agent, due to having positive tests for equine herpesvirus-5 (EHV-5). While the study was unable to determine a “best” chemotherapeutic approach for the treatment of lymphoma, horses receiving five‐ and four‐ drug protocols tended to live longer (longer median survival time). This is similar to the treatment response for dogs with lymphoma. Unfortunately, the study could not determine an “optimal” chemotherapeutic approach for horses with lymphoma. Cases were not randomized and the number of cases for statistical evaluation was insufficient to make such determinations. Adverse reactions are commonly reported side effects of human cancer therapy, and horses treated for lymphoma were not immune to them. Of the 15 treated horses, nine experienced adverse effects that could be attributed to the medication. Side effects included alopecia, neutropenia, lymphopenia, lethargy, neurotoxicity, colic, and hypersensitivity. Doxorubicin administration was associated with the most adverse reactions (n = 4), including the horse that died 18 hours after therapy. JESTES PLANS COMEBACK IN AUGUST BY COURTESY BRETT MARSHALL |

If Nate Jestes has his way, he will be back doing his fulltime job in August.

Perhaps, if things work out, he will be doing so when the Gooding (Idaho) Pro Rodeo’s 94th edition is held Aug. 14-17. Jestes’ comeback from a devastating and potential career-threatening injury has

78

seen his surgery and follow-up rehabilitation go much faster than doctors originally predicted. It seems that Jestes’ overall physical talents have helped fast forward his rehab time following the injury he sustained on the opening night of the 2018 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. A professional bullfighter for nearly the last decade, Jestes was

JULY 2019

one of three who had been voted to work the NFR in 2018. It was during the 13th ride of the first night when the accident resulted in Jestes’ injury. “I was down low on the hinge side of the gate,” Jestes said recently. “But the bull came out spinning, and as we always do, I tried to get his attention to safeguard the rider. I was trying to get the focus away from the others.” When the bull first contacted Jestes, the bullfighter landed with his right leg straight. The bull, weighing about 1,800 pounds, continued to charge through Jestes, forcing Jestes’ upper body over the top of his extended straight leg. Wearing knee braces to protect from knee injuries, the hamstring was the only thing to give. “It separated the hamstring from my pelvis on the right leg,” Jestes said. “… It tore two of the three hamstrings completely, but honestly at that moment, I had no pain. When I got up off the ground, I thought I just had a charley horse. I picked up my hat, took a long step and because I didn’t have a hamstring to work, my brain’s signal to the leg just didn’t function.” “They used an Achilles tendon from a cadaver by drilling a hole in my pelvis and them hammering it into the pelvis,” said Jestes, noting that the repair procedure didn’t take place until the end of January. “They had to pull the hamstring back to properly wrap the Achilles around the hamstring.” Doctors told Jestes the normal recovery time was six to nine months. But now, four and a half months later, he is back to light jogging. If things go well, he plans to make his comeback debut in August. At 5-11, 190 pounds, Jestes’ size usually helps him avoid serious injuries, but it didn’t make any difference in the seriousness of his injury.

Fox Finishes First at Las Vegas Days Rodeo Las Vegas, Nevada—Sometimes when it feels like life—or rodeo life—has thrown a roadblock into your path, it’s helpful to remember that you may just need to find a detour. In the past year, Idaho cowgirl Darby Fox has truly learned this lesson after watching her plans change several times over. Late last summer, she received a phone call from former WPRA Rookie of the Year Cayla (Melby)

80

Small. Small had been riding a nice roan gelding named Barts Blu Jeans and the horse’s owners had decided to sell. “She called me and asked if I wanted to come try him,” Fox remembers. Busy rodeoing in her home circuit, the Wilderness Circuit, Fox left her rig with her dad and caught a plane from Utah. “I flew to Oklahoma, tried him and brought him home.” By Holy Bart, a son of Dash Ta

Fame, and out of Sweet Alibis, the horse was bred by John and Cindy Baltezore and trained by Jolene Jones. Small campaigned him at some futurities as a five year old in 2018 for owners Jessica and Johnny Asher. Fox instantly liked what she saw and felt. “He was really fast,” she notes, “and I really liked him.” Fox did not grow up in a rodeo family. In fact, she found the sport when her family moved to Idaho when she was five years old. “Our neighbor was [horse trainer] Jerry Gorrell and his granddaughter was about my age. She junior rodeoed and I just got exposed to it through her,” she says. “I fell in love with it.” Saying she didn’t get serious about barrel racing until she was a sophomore in high school, Fox has quickly made up for lost time. After her rookie season in 2014, Fox has twice finished inside the top 50 of the WPRA World standings in the last three years and found herself placing in some of pro rodeo’s most prestigious events. With her top rodeo horse Fancy as well as several capable backups, Fox planned to take her time getting with Blue Jeans, her new acquisition. But life threw another curve ball her way. Fancy was injured when she got her foot caught in a stall door while in Denver for the National Western Stock Show in January. With her main mount out of action for awhile, Fox set about regrouping and making a new plan. She arrived in California for the spring run with a full herd — nine horses in tow—but truly missing Fancy, who loves the big outdoor runs offered during April and May on the West Coast. “She loves these pens but I’ve come to realize that everything happens for a reason,” she states. “With her down, it’s given me extra time to focus on him.” Though she rode a different horse to begin the spring run in Red Bluff, Blue Jeans got the call in Clovis and she noted that he made a fast run that just missed a check.

Are you looking for a USDA Certified Organic Alfalfa forage option for your animals?

Organic Alfalfa can be utilized in any diet that currently includes alfalfa. If your preference is “organic” or your livestock herd is involved in a program that requires organic feed, Standlee Premium Western Forage® is proud to offer you that choice. Standlee Forage® has two organic products to offer that meet organic needs. Premium Organic Alfalfa Pellets are 100% organic alfalfa, convenient to store and easy to measure. Also recently available, the Organic

Alfalfa Grab and Go® Compressed Bale which is also 100% organic alfalfa, just in a compressed bale format. In our signature wrapped packaging, this product is easy to transport, with less mess and convenient to store, especially with limited feed storage space. Alfalfa is an important forage component in many livestock, small companion animal and horse diets. It is a great and abundant source for high-quality protein, which stimulates muscle and bone development, and supports milk production. Also, quality protein is an essential building block for proper hoof, hair, wool and fur growth. Alfalfa is a rich source of calories that provide the animal with energy to grow, reproduce

and synthesize milk and meat. In horses, these calories fuel muscle contraction to exercise, train and compete in athletic activities. So, what is USDA Certified Organic Alfalfa? It is alfalfa that is grown and processed according to federal guidelines addressing, among other factors, soil quality, pest and weed control and the use of additives. In producing organic alfalfa, Standlee Premium Western Forage relies on natural substances and physical, mechanical or biologically based farming methods to the fullest to provide you a quality and sustainable forage with an organic option. Standlee Premium Western Forage® is committed to growing high quality alfalfa and also in providing an organic forage option for animal owners. Our farming location in the high desert of Idaho allows cultivation of alfalfa in rich volcanic soils. Favorable weather conditions and irrigation allow us to harvest alfalfa plants at the optimum stage of maturity to maximize nutrient content. Our commitment to consistent quality and sustainable farming practices has allowed us to produce a variety of products, including premium USDA Certified Organic Alfalfa for you, and provide the most widely available forage options and formats to meet your needs. SAGE KIMZEY WINS RENO XTREME BULLS FOR FIRST TIME

BY TRACY RENCK PRCA Media Coordinator

RENO, Nev. – After winning five consecutive PRCA bull riding world championships, Sage Kimzey isn’t taking his foot off the gas pedal. On June 20, Kimzey looked as good as ever. The Strong City, Okla., cowboy captured the Division 1 Xtreme Bulls crown in Reno, Nev., with a two-head average title of 177.5 points. “This is the first time I’ve ever won the Xtreme Bulls title in Reno, so now I can check this off my bucket list,” said Kimzey, 24. Kimzey arrived in Reno second in the Xtreme Bulls season standings – $723 behind Trey Benton III. He will take over the Xtreme Bulls standings lead after earning $12,281. Kimzey has won a PRCA-record three X Bulls championships – 2015, 201718. Since the Xtreme Bulls Tour started in 2003, Kanin Asay (2007

and 2012) was the only other rider to win more than one Xtreme Bulls year-end title. This was Kimzey’s eighth career Division 1 Xtreme Bulls title, tying him with Matt Austin for the all-time lead. The Reno victory also added to Kimzey’s lead in the PRCA | RAM World Standings. He entered the Reno event with $102,057.

“When you do well in the X Bulls, it goes hand in hand to you doing well in the world standings,” Kimzey said. Kimzey set the tone for himself in the first round Thursday with an 87.5-point ride on Diamond G Rodeo’s Make-N-Magic. That score tied for second in the round with Dallee Mason. J.W. Harris won round one with a 90-point ride on Big Stone Rodeo’s Flying Lowe. “I had never seen that bull before, but he was a good bull and I got a score that put me in a solid position for the short round,” Kimzey said. As the second to last rider to go in the finals, Kimzey took the lead with a 90-point trip on All in Pro Rodeos’ High Razor. “That bull and I had some history together,” Kimzey said. “I rode him in San Antonio a few years ago and had an 87-point ride. I have always liked that bull, and he was great for me again.”

JULY 2019

Harris was the last cowboy out in the short round but couldn’t overtake Kimzey as he was bucked off Big Stone Rodeo’s Spotted Demon, the PRCA 2018 Bull of the Year. Rookie Stetson Wright finished second to Kimzey with 177 points on two head. Wright’s 93.5-point ride in the short round aboard All In Pro Rodeos' Smoke Show was noteworthy. There have been only 10 cowboys who have had higherscored rides than Wright’s ride in Reno in the history of the Xtreme Bulls Tour, which began in 2003. J.W. Harris has the highest-scored ride in X Bulls history, a 96-point trip on Flying U Rodeo’s Werewolf in Reno in 2006. There are nine other cowboys who are tied for second on the X Bulls list with 95-point rides.

Other winners on the Xtreme Bulls Division 1 circuit this season are Mason (Fort Worth, Texas, 2223), Benton (San Antonio, Feb. 23), Tristan Mize (Fort Mohave, Ariz., March 1-2) and Trevor Reiste (Del Rio, Texas, April 26-27).

BLM SEEKS BIDS FOR OFF-RANGE CORRALS FOR WILD HORSES AND BURROS

Facilities must be located within Colorado, Utah or Wyoming WASHINGTON— The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced today that it is seeking contractors to provide corral space for wild horses and burros gathered from public rangelands in the West. The BLM will award contracts to facilities in the states of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming that can accommodate 500—3,500

wild horses and burros in safe, humane conditions. Corrals will serve as short-term holding and preparation facilities for animals to be transferred to off-range pastures or adoption and sale locations further east. The BLM removes animals from the range to control the size of herds, which double in population every four years because wild horses and burros

have virtually no predators that can naturally control population growth. These rapidly-growing populations and the stress they place on the landscape requires BLM to remove more animals from the range than the agency can immediately place into private care. Off-range care facilities provide needed capacity to hold these excess animals, while providing veterinary care and

preparing them for adoption. They provide key support for BLM’s mission of maintaining healthy wild horse and burro herds on healthy rangelands. Depending on their condition, animals can only be humanely transported a certain distance in a single day (typically no more than 10 hours). Consequently, it is necessary to have a network of off-range corrals strategically located to allow for safe and humane shipment. For that reason, Facilities must be within 10 hours drive time of regional herd management areas. Specifically, facilities in Colorado must be west of I-25, north of I-76 and no more than 25 miles south of Hwy 50. Facilities in Utah must be east of I-15 and north of I-70. In Wyoming, facilities must be south of Hwy 20 and 26. Facilities outside the boundaries will not be considered. Facilities must also be staffed by personnel with knowledge, skill and ability to safely handle wild horses and burros, and be capable of providing appropriate veterinary care. Bids will be accepted through August 8, 2019. Applicants who are new to conducting business with the government must first obtain a Dun and Bradstreet number at www.dnb.com and then register at www.sam.gov/ to respond to the solicitation. No fee is involved. The solicitation describes what to submit to the BLM and where to send it. To obtain the contract solicitation: (1) Go to www.fedconnect.net; (2) Click on “Search Public Opportunities”; (3) Under Search Criteria, select “Reference Number”; (4) Enter the solicitation’s reference number: 140L0119R0004; (5) Click “Search” and once the solicitation information appears, download the information on the right. Liver Transplant Puts Pam Stubbs Back in the Saddle

Pam Stubbs had felt so bad for so long that she'd forgotten what it was like to feel good. Initially chalking up bothersome symptoms to an ongoing push to expand her real estate career in Scottsdale, Arizona, Pam's health issues came to head in late 2015.

next concern was to get her body ready. For help with that, she turned to her transplant surgeon, and chair of Transplant Surgery, Adyr Moss, M.D. "We hit it off right away," Pam says of Dr. Moss. "He told me as I prepared for the transplant to work out like I was training for a marathon — to get as physically fit as I possibly could." So that's what she did, hiring a personal trainer and working out three times a week. In addition to getting her body ready for the transplant, Pam "It was around the holidays, and I just wasn't feeling well," she says. also prepared her mind by joining a support group through Mayo Clinic "I was really tired. But I thought it was because I was getting older, so I that connected her with other didn't think it was a big deal." liver transplant patients. on. Gasoline or Diesel vehicles all experience some kind of carbon build up over time. The carbon Nate Brekken build up would be so great that it would take up the space between the piston and cylinder head, causing the two to hit every time the piston came up to the head. Our fix, at the time, was to fog the intake system with a product from BG to help loosen and burn up the harmful carbon deposits in the engine. This fogging of the engine worked, opening the throttle plate to look inside the intake manifold revealing a nice, clean, shiny intake surface that was not present before the service. The intake system cleaning works! Today, we offer the same service on not only your gasoline vehicle, but we have been doing this service on your diesel truck for years. This service can clean EGR ports, loosen up carbon build up in your intake system, free up sticking veins on your turbo, and help DPF’s regen properly by helping the motor breathe the way it is supposed to. BG induction service for gasoline vehicles and BG intake service for Diesel vehicles restores the engine to how it should run, like it was when you drove it off the showroom floor. It’s amazing how this service can help a non EGR engine as well. Direct injection gasoline vehicles receive huge benefits from this service. Carbon build up is a huge concern on these engines. Strictly Diesel is proud to work with BG. We are also proud to use their products that helps you keep your vehicle on the road, gas or diesel. CBD - What Can You Expect?

By Juliet M. Getty, Ph.D.

CBD. Whether you’re already using it, you’re thinking about it, or just plain never heard of it, it’s worth getting more familiar with because it is truly remarkable. No, it is not the latest “snake oil” touting cures from hair loss to ingrown toenails. Instead, it is chemical messenger in the “endocannabinoid system,” a natural and crucial part of the body. Research on this system is extensive, with years of examination and hundreds of studies. My goal in writing this article is to offer you an overview of how CBD can impact your health as well as the health of your horses, dogs[1], and cats. From a personal perspective, I have experienced significant pain relief from sciatica. Many of my clients have decided to use it for themselves, offering them better sleep, lessened anxiety and depression, improved digestive health, allergy relief, and reduced pain. Chester is my 22-year-old horse. He suffers from arthritis in his hocks and knees and is now moving with much greater ease. Clients who have decided to try CBD for their horses have offered very positive feedback. Inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis and ulcerations are showing improvement, as well as pain relief from laminitis. Horses with anxiety or “sensitive” behavior, have a more relaxed demeanor. And, metabolic conditions may be potentially alleviated, which is quite exciting. While it’s too soon to tell if leptin and insulin levels are declining from CBD treatment, there have been studies showing how CBD reduces insulin resistance and obesity[2], as well as appetite, in people with type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.[3] What is CBD and is it marijuana? CBD is short for “cannabidiol,” one of more than 80 different cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. CBD and THC are the two most studied, and this is where many misunderstandings stem from. Cannabis sativa L. (genus, species, and subspecies) is the “umbrella term” for the plants known as hemp and marijuana. Marijuana is particularly high in THC, the cannabinoid that creates a psychoactive “high.” CBD, on the other hand, does not create this effect. Hemp-derived CBD is not marijuana. Though both hemp and marijuana belong to the Cannabis genus, their genetic composition distinguishes them to produce vastly different amounts of THC. Hemp-derived CBD is high in CBD and very low in THC (less than 0.3%). Though hemp-derived CBD is legal in all 50 states, thanks to the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill,[4] federal law does not preempt state law, and there are still some restrictions within various states.[5] Just as many cities throughout the country prohibit alcohol sales, there are local and state laws that restrict industrial hemp products. But bottom line, it is legal to purchase and consume hemp-derived CBD products. The FDA[6] does not regulate it so it behooves you to choose a reputable company that is willing to disclose the source, extraction method, and analysis of their products. What is the endocannabinoid system? The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a major signaling system that exists in you and your animals. It continually monitors any instability within the body and returns it to a state of balance or homeostasis so that the internal environment remains stable. CBD and other cannabinoids are compounds that activate this system. Cannabinoids, both naturally produced by the body (endogenous), and those supplemented from cannabis (exogenous), act as “keys” to these receptors, turning on a variety of functions. Within the ECS there are two main cell receptors -- CB1 and CB2: · CB1 receptors exist mainly in the brain and central nervous system. They impact areas such as appetite regulation, memory, emotions, and feelings of pain. · CB2 receptors are concentrated in the gastrointestinal tract and peripheral nervous system (nerve cells outside the brain and spinal cord) 92

and modulate immune cell functions. When activated, they help reduce inflammation. Endogenous cannabinoids are produced when the body signals that they are required, but are quickly degraded. Offering CBD (exogenous cannabinoid) allows the ECS to work harder and be more productive to help us and our animals deal with health issues such as: · Anxiety and depression[7] · Insomnia[8] · Pain and inflammation[9] · Obesity/increased appetite/leptin resistance[10] [11] · Metabolic syndrome/insulin resistance[12] · Immune deficiencies and autoimmune diseases[13] · Digestive disturbances/ulcers/colitis[14] Side effects CBD has a favorable safety profile.[15] If overdosed, it can have some mild effects. These can include drowsiness, decreased blood pressure, dizziness, fatigue, and diarrhea. If you or your animals experience any of these, you can cut back on the dosage. Long-term use appears to be safe, though further research is needed. Noteworthy: Until we know more, CBD should not be taken by pregnant women, though many women proport relief from nausea during pregnancy. Consult your veterinarian before giving it to a pregnant animal. It should not be given to children without professional permission. Since it can interact with some drugs[16], including anti-epileptic and blood thinner medications, it is best to consult with your doctor or pharmacist when you have any doubts. Let’s talk horses As of this date, there are few, if any, research studies that use horses as subjects. But I expect this will quickly change as more and more companies are selling CBD for equine consumption. In the meantime, anecdotal responses are highly favorable. From first-hand accounts of horse owners, hemp-derived CBD appears to stimulate the horse’s ECS in the same way it does yours. It is well tolerated, without any euphoric or adverse effects. Specific health conditions that CBD may improve, based on currently available studies with humans and laboratory animals include: · Pain[17]from arthritis[18] or laminitis · Anxiety during stall confinement[19] · Stress during traveling and shows[20] · Ulcers and leaky gut[21] · Healing from surgery or injury[22] · Immune system depression from oxidative stress[23] experienced with Cushing’s disease · Appetite regulation[24] · Obesity[25] · Inflammation, with the potential to reduce leptin levels[26] · Insulin resistance 23 Horse competition rules and testing The FEI (International Federation for Equestrian Sports - French: Fédération Équestre Internationale) and the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) have strict rules regarding medicating your horse prior to an event. Recently, the USEF announced that as of September 1, 2019, positive test results for cannabinoids will incur violations.[27] Since it is THC that is detectable by a blood or urine test, it is highly unlikely for a positive test result to occur since hemp-derived CBD contains only minute amounts of THC. Nonetheless, it is possible, so it is best to discontinue its use 7 to 10 days prior to an event. Even if you choose a CBD isolate or broad-spectrum product (which does not contain any THC), it is best to err on the side of caution by stopping before an event. Choose a safe, quality product

JULY 2019

First, know where the hemp was grown. Choose products grown in the US or Canada. If it was grown overseas with potentially relaxed growing standards, it could be contaminated with chemicals, bacteria, and heavy metals that put your health at risk. To ensure a clean, safe product, it is best to buy CBD that has been tested and offers a Certificate of Analysis (COA) posted on the company’s website This document shows how the company meets and adheres to product specifications and standards of production. Some other things to pay attention to with CBD products: · Check the label for accurate CBD content per dose. · Choose a product from an organic source. · Look for percentage of THC on a provided COA. CBD isolate, full-spectrum, or broad-spectrum CBD isolate means that the product contains only CBD with no other naturally occurring cannabinoids, including THC. That also means that other substances that are found in the plant, such as terpenes and flavonoids, have been fully extracted. If you are undergoing a drug test for a job, it is best to use the isolate, or stop your usage of the full-spectrum product a week or two before the test. Full-spectrum is a whole plant CBD, meaning that it contains CBD and other cannabinoids (less than 0.3% THC), as well as terpenes, flavonoids, and active essential oils. Broad-spectrum products also contain the whole plant compounds like full-spectrum, but the THC has been removed. The entourage effect. It used to be thought that CBD isolate was the best approach. But it is now better understood that the cannabinoids and plant compounds found in full-spectrum and broad-spectum CBD create a synergism where they work together to complement each other, offering a greater impact on health conditions. It’s important to note that dogs and cats can benefit from hempderived full-spectrum CBD, even though they cannot tolerate THC from marijuana. The tiny amount of THC found in this product is safe may further increase the entourage effect. Why is it so expensive? It takes a lot of hemp plants to create a CBD oil (tincture). Products called “hemp oil” are not necessarily concentrated with CBD. Hempseed oil is a nutritious oil, high in essential fatty acids,[28] but it is not a good source of CBD. Before you buy, read the label carefully to determine just how much CBD exists in the product. What extraction method is best? When researching a CBD product for you and your animals, it is best to know the extraction method used to remove CBD from the plant. Going through each method is beyond the scope of this article, but the approach that is most complete and the cleanest is a CO2 extraction. It uses carbon dioxide (CO2) to extract CBD from the plant to create products that are pure and very powerful. How much CBD is in one dose? The label should provide you with the amount of CBD per dose. But it can be confusing. When using a CBD tincture, you should see the number of mgs of CBD in the full bottle. Some products can be very diluted, so be sure the manufacturer’s label is detailed and specific. Many tinctures will offer directions by the “dropper-full.” But getting a full dropper is not always possible or can be inaccurate. The best approach is to first determine the amount of CBD in each drop. By knowing how many mgs are in each drop, you can accurately dispense the desired dosage. To do this, you need to know these three things: · There are 30 ml of oil in a typical CBD tincture bottle, · A full dropper-full is 1 ml, and · There are 20 drops in a ml Two examples: 1. CBD tincture that offer 2500 mg of CBD in the entire 30 ml bottle:

o Divide 2500 by 30 to get the number of mg per dropper-full (1 ml). This calculates to be 83.3 mg of CBD in 1 ml o Divide 83.3 by 20 to give you the level of CBD per drop. This calculates to be approximately 4 mg per drop. 2. CBD tincture for pets that offers 250 mg of CBD in the entire 30 ml bottle: o 250 divided by 30 = 8.3 mg of CBD in one dropper-full (1 ml) o 8.3 divided by 20 = .42 mg (slightly less than ½ mg) of CBD per drop Other forms of CBD such as pellets, gummies, capsules, and topicals should offer specific amounts of CBD per dose. What is the best dosage? Dosages are weight dependent and based on the severity of the situation. It is best to start slowly, and then increase the dose as needed. A little trial and error is necessary to find the right dose that is best for you or your animals. Keep in mind that it takes approximately 2 weeks for the body to experience relief and will continue to improve over time. Dosage recommendations are not standardized. However, through research studies and applications, here are generalized daily guidelines. I have found that dividing the dose into two servings is better than administering once daily. Pets: Under 25 lbs: 10 mg 25 to 75 lbs: 10 to 20 mg 75 or more lbs: 20-40 mg People: Less than 100 lbs: 20 to 40 mg 100 to 174 lbs: 30 to 60 mg Over 175 lbs: 60 to 90 mg Horses: Minis: 25 to 50 mg Full sized (1100 lbs): 75 to 170 mg Large breeds: 120 to 200 mg How to administer CBD There are several ways to provide CBD: · Sublingual: Placing the drops under the tongue and holding them there for 30 seconds provides good bioavailability and kicks in quickly. This is difficult to do for animals and is not recommended since most droppers are made of glass and can cause injury if bitten. · Oral: Adding CBD to food, swallowing a CBD capsule, or chewing a CBD gummy, will take the longest time for the effects to become apparent, but this method is longer lasting than under the tongue. Pellets (typically available for animals) that are extruded are better absorbed than pellets that use binders, providing improved bioavailability and hence, lower effective dosing.[29] · Pulmonary: CBD vapes are available. While this has the highest bioavailability, it has the shortest duration of action. I typically do no recommend this for people with any respiratory conditions, since it could be potentially harmful. · Topical: Worthwhile for you and your animals. CBD is absorbed well into the skin and is beneficial for targeted areas.[30] Bottom line Even though experts have been studying for decades the benefits of CBD, there is still research that needs to be done, especially for horses. Nevertheless, the outcome thus far is encouraging, revealing longreaching benefits on the natural endocannabinoid system, providing relief from mental and physical ailments that affect us, our families, and our animals. USDA Proposes Bold Moves to Improve Forest, Grassland Management

WASHINGTON, DC JUNE 12, 2019 -

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Forest Service (USFS) released proposed changes to modernize how the agency complies with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The proposed updates would not only give the Forest Service the tools and flexibility to manage the land and tackle critical challenges like wildfire, insects, and disease but also improve service to the American people. Revising the rules will improve forest conditions and make it simpler for people to use and enjoy their national forests and grasslands at lower cost to the taxpayer. The revised rules will also make it easier to maintain and repair the infrastructure people need to use and enjoy their public lands—the roads, trails, campgrounds, and other facilities. While these proposed changes will save time and resources, they are ultimately intended to better protect people, communities and forests from catastrophic wildfire and ensure a high level of engagement with people and communities when doing related work and associated environmental analyses. “We are committed to doing the work to protect people and infrastructure from catastrophic wildfire. With millions of acres in need of treatment, years of costly analysis and delays are not an acceptable solution – especially when data and experience show us we can get this work done with strong environmental protection standards as well as protect communities, livelihoods and resources,” said Secretary Perdue. In 2008, the Forest Service codified its procedures for complying with NEPA in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) at 36 CFR 220. However, these regulations, in large part, still reflect the policies and practices established by the agency’s 1992 NEPA Manual and Handbook.

The updates would create a new suite of “categorical exclusions,” a classification under the NEPA excluding certain routine activities from more extensive, time-consuming analysis under an environmental assessment or environmental impact statement. The proposed

categorical exclusions would be for restoration projects, roads and trails management, and recreation and facility management, as well as special use authorizations that issue permits for outfitters and guides, community organizations, civic groups and others who seek to recreate on our national

forests and grasslands. The new categorical exclusions are based on intensive analysis of hundreds of environmental assessments and related data and when fully implemented will reduce process delays for routine activities by months or years.
