Ben Johnson Knew How to Set A Horse Some of the old Cowboy stars were accomplished horseback riders, but very few could “set a horse as if they were one with the animal. Cowboy actor Ben Johnson was one of the best ever. He was discovered when he doubled Henry Fonda in Fort Apache and he went on to star in many Westerns, winning the Academy Award for best actor in The Last Picture Show (1971). He died of a heart attack at age 77, while visiting his mother, Ollie, at Leisure World in Mesa, Arizona.

Sibi’s Boys On the San Carlos Reservation in the 1880s, Chief of Scouts Al Sieber, rode the res and dispensed justice with a group of hand picked scouts. Known as Sibi’s Boys, the crew included Sieber, Mickey Free, Tom Horn and The Apache Kid. They were a terror to lawbreakers. The crew was busted up when the Kid turned outlaw and fled to Mexico. Both Horn and Mickey Free tried to track him down, but the results have never been known.
Slaughter Insurance James Young was an ex-slave, Civil War veteran, Buffalo Soldier, boxer and bodyguard. Oh, and he backed down Buckskin Frank Leslie, not once, but twice. Perhaps that’s part of the reason Texas John Slaughter brought Young along on his Wednesday night poker games in Bisbee. Since Slaughter was carrying large amounts of cash, Young was stationed outside to insure nobody got any wild ideas about hijacking the pot. Nobody ever did.
Cliff Hanger In April of 1883, General Crook mounted a massive expedition force to go after Geronimo and his warriors in Mexico. Assigned to cover the story for the New York Herald, A. Frank Randall brought along a camera and glass plates packed by a mule. Barely a week into the expedition, five mules were killed when they lost their footing on the narrow high mountain trails in the Sierra Madres. One fell hundreds of feet to its doom. The unfortunate animal carried Randall’s cherished camera and glass plates with it.

Michigan appeals court finds in favor of Dr. Pol
Overturns disciplinary action ordered by state regulatory board in relation to negligence, incompetence findings. Jul 01, 2016 By Katie James DVM360 MAGAZINE
Disciplinary action taken against Jan Pol, DVM, star of Nat Geo Wild’s The Incredible Dr. Pol, by the Michigan Licensing and Regulatory Association (LARA), in regard to an administrative complaint filed against him in 2014, has been overturned on appeal. The Michigan Court of Appeals found 3-0 in favor of Pol, overturning the $500 fine and year of probation LARA had ordered. The complaint, filed by Eden Myers, DVM, who was concerned about the treatment of a patient featured on the television show, resulted in charges of negligence and incompetence at the administrative hearing. The patient in question, a Boston terrier named Mr. Pigglesworth, had been hit by a car and suffered from lacerations, a broken pelvis and an eye that was hanging from the socket. During surgery to remove the eye, suture the eye socket closed and suture a cheek laceration, Pol didn’t wear sterile surgical attire, according to Myers’ complaint. Also at issue was the fact that Pol’s unlicensed son, Charles, assisted in the surgery and that Pol did not provide intravenous therapy to the dog during the surgical procedure or a warming support in the dog’s postoperative kennel, according to the complaint. In the appeals court’s decision, in which judges refer to the “curious case of Mr. Pigglesworth,” the judges seem perplexed that Pol was reprimanded when the dog in question survived and its owners were happy with its care. They found that the sanctions imposed by the regulatory board were not supported by the evidence given. “We cannot conclude that the administrative decision in this 6

(Photo courtesy of Nancy McCarty Iannios, Core PR Group) case is supported by competent, material and substantial evidence on the whole record. The evidence submitted does not establish a clear standard of care that respondent violated,” the court’s opinion states. “Given the numerous references in the [proposal for decision] that go outside the scope of the allegations in the complaint, references to items not in the record, and the hearing officer’s own opinion as to the need for mandatory continuing education and a formal standard of care, it can even be said that the decision is ultimately arbitrary and capricious.” Pol told dvm360 in a statement that he is “pleased but not surprised by the ruling of the State of Michigan Court of Appeals to overturn the findings of the Michigan Bureau of Health Care Services board. The ruling reaffirms what I have always known, that the care we gave Mr. Pigglesworth was appropriate and saved the dog’s life. I will continue to advocate for common sense, affordable vet care within the veterinarian community. I am thankful for the support I received from the farmers and ranchers who are my clients, and for National Geographic Channel for standing with me on this issue.” A spokesman for LARA declined to comment, saying that the board needs to review the decision with the Michigan Attorney General’s office.

“Food for Thought”
I do not have a lot of computer savvy. Page had 28,000 followers and was Really I don't! I can get my way around Hacked. I can’t access it anymore and the World Wide Web just well enough no help or assistance was received By Rocco Wachman to order some feed supplements and by me from the Social Media Giant on medicines online from several different web sites. I do like that problem. Two other Pages same result. On Instagram, it e-mail but mostly because I hate the telephone and I do not started immediately after signing up, to get really odd people have a hard line phone or cell service at the Headquarters approaching my page. Twitter, I just never understood and I call home. I have had though, up until yesterday a always felt stupid when I was on it. “Birds should be the only Facebook, Twitter and Instagram Account, mostly for the things that Tweet!” I feel such a relief that I no longer will log reason of promoting my Book, “Cowboy, The Ultimate on to check those web sites and can use that time to engage Guide to Living Like a Great American Icon.” I would go more the things in life I love. their daily to Work and try to get more push, dollars out Please don't get me wrong, I am not saying that these of the Book……. To my surprise after a short time I found Social Media Outlets are not right or good for people, they are myself going to those places just for fun and a little out of just not right or good for me. One of the best things I found habit. Ahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! about them though is I could keep up with Rodeo Cowboys, Fun? Habit? I realized I was starting to check on people Horse Trainers and Performance Horse People as they I have never met and don't even know, before or after I traveled the Country and stay up to date rather than waiting would post some pictures or comments, wait a while and for months for their return to find out how and what they did. Rocco Wachman There were also some great Tack Auction Pages, and places to then post a link to Amazon of my book. What was happening to me? I love being outside! I really love riding Horses! I find great Leatherwork. Although I will miss that, I now will use just love tracking cows and checking fence but here I was wasting time that time spent to be more with my horses, dogs, friends and Grandson “Posting, Tweeting and Poking others.” Oh, the Humanity! Dustin……… I recently had the opportunity to drive from Scottsdale, Arizona To stay in touch with me feel free to contact me at email address: to Anchorage, Alaska for the purpose of delivering a very “Special Rocco@CowboyCollege.com Package.” Thirty-Six Hundred miles door to door in some of the most “Stay Well and Keep Riding” beautiful country God and Nature have produced. I took the route from “Please grab my Book: “Cowboy, The Ultimate Guide to Living Like a the Valley of the Sun, through Calgary, Alberta to Dawson Creek, British Great American Icon” at www.amazon.com Columbia where the start of the Alaska Highway is. From that point, every few miles, for fifteen hundred miles were the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Besides the scenery, my gosh the wildlife! Bears, Moose, Buffalo, Eagles were around every turn for the entire trip. You might be wondering where the Social Media part of this Article went? Well, here it is…… On a trip where I had no Cell Service or Internet Access most of the time I was going to my phone to check on things over and over again. Damn, I felt stupid. I just now heard a story on the news that some people are reaching, checking or looking at their phones 300 to 600 times a day with some at it non stop. I thought to myself, “What the Hell am I doing?” I really love how fast information can be found on the internet and appreciate the fact that research doesn't take me to the library or an Encyclopedia for answers to questions I don't know. But……..This little addiction that was starting to get a hook in me really startled me and made me question, are the extra sales of the Book worth my exposure to “Social Media?” I decided, “It is Not!” So I deactivated my Facebook Page because I cannot figure out how to delete it. I never thought about that when I started it up. Same with Twitter and Instagram, I cant figure out how to make the Pages just disappear so I just logged off and walked away. There were always problems with Facebook for me. My first Fan

Al Dunning and The Scourge of the West Coast Expensive Hobby 1979 By Larry Rose
In 1982 Albert brought the unbeatable EXPENSIVE HOBBY to the Congress for the Open. You have to remember it was a big World then, no video I-phones etc. and no one in the East had seen this horse that won every major event on the West Coast (some of them twice) work.
My friend Albert and the Scourge of the West Coast - Expensive Hobby 1979.
So, three days before the Open I asked Albert when he was going to work him. "At 1 am" he said Bill Paul and I were in the stands waiting for some action, Albert came in and walked EXPENSIVE HOBBY ON THE RAIL FOR A HALF HOUR AND LEFT. Boy were we dissapointed...the next night we were there again and Al was walking him on the rail again, Paul leaned on me to get Al to do something with him, so I walked down to the rail and asked Al how Hobby was doing...he replied

..."not as good as last night but I've got one more night". We all got a good laugh about that and left. Al got the last laugh, and won the Open by 8pts. We all learned the value of walking a horse and why and how....Note, in the pic Al is gripping him with his legs...thats the West Coast signal to squat down...works for them. B.H. bet me $10 I couldn't do this. He lost. One day Bill and Paul Horn and I went trout fishing in a neighbors pond...he hand fed them pellets from a barrel every day...you could catch them on a dry hook, it was fun playing out those 15 pounders on 10lb line. Bill took 3 big ones home..too strong for me.... After we went to my place and rode a few horses. While cooling them out on the edge of woods Bill looked over at me and quietly said...I'll bet u ten dollars you cant raise ur stirrups to the top notch, stand up, and gallop that mare down the pen and stop her without biting the dust!

WESTERN DRESSAGE - HONORING THE HORSE’S NEED TO FEEL SAFE
Last month I said we would be taking an in-depth look at the foundation of trainingrelaxation. The German training system has a “pyramid of training”, or training scale that is internationally accepted as a guideline for the training of dressage horses. Additionally, The North American Western Dressage has adopted it,(see graphics on this page), and offers a program called “Six Feet On The Ground”, in-hand tests, “emphasizing the principles in the training scale, which is applicable to every discipline and provides a working model for success even before we climb into the saddle”. Relaxation and rhythm are the foundation of the pyramid, always foremost in our thoughts when handling the horse. To begin, it is important to remember that humans are predators, our eyes set on the front of our faces, like other big predators. A horse, prey animal can consider ANYTHING, a life threatening amount of pressure in differing degrees; dependent on their experiences, temperament and personality. So, first we must to establish trust so that we can teach relaxation, the two go hand in hand. I must interrupt myself here, to say, if you are dealing with a horse that has no boundaries and has learned to be a bully, that must be dealt with separately and first, by a professional, as this can be a very dangerous situation. What does a relaxed horse looks like? Their head is down, comfortably for their confirmation, one or both ears possibly a bit to the side, listening to the handler, eyes blinking, every now and then, licking and chewing, (the opposite of a hard eye and clenched jaw), possibly blowing through their nose, compared to snorting with a high head and pricked ears! This relaxed horse will be comfortable in their own space, meaning, not invading the handlers’ space; or trying to leave. Before I talk about how to begin training relaxation, it is important to understand that, as predators, when we LOOK at a horse, we can be communicating pressure to them. As 18
By Leigh Webber When the horse is not being unsafe horse handler’s, we must be aware of but is also not relaxed, the first thing ourselves FIRST. Are we breathing? I teach them is, “lick and chew” and, As the herd leader, if we aren’t “head down”. To teach “lick and breathing, diaphragmatically, we chew”, with a halter and lead rope on, are unintentionally communicating standing on whichever side potential danger is near. If the horse and handler are you don’t know this, test most comfortable, in a it, in many different place that feels safe, situations and notice I rub the wither, then how your horse bridge the nose with responds! Some next best thing to do, as horses immediately move their opposed to reacting. I have mouth, and keep doing so when I found we must practice being centered remove my thumb and hand. A tense so we can teach ourselves not to horse will clench their jaw and really REACT in our habitual way. resist a hand being that close to their mouth. This is where training must CENTERING IS: BEING begin, getting the horse to trust you MENTALLY FOCUSEDaren’t putting a twitch on or going PHYSICALLY RELAXED EMOTIONALLY CALMSPRITUALLY AWARE OR CONNECTED The great thing about this, is, we do not need to be with our horse to practice! We get to practice this in our every day, walking around life! Now, how far is the horse from the position of relaxation? Is it running, pacing, stomping, freaking out and totally dysregulated? The safety of both horse and handler must be considered; in addition to the reason the horse is in the state they are. (Check out Dr. Deb Bennett’s Birdie Theory!) It may take a professional’s to hurt them in any way. I would rub experienced eye to help an amateur in the wither again and move the flat of this situation. I find that if it isn’t too my palm lightly around the nose and bad, I may be able to stroke the horse mouth until I can part their lips. with a long whip, all over the body, I start teaching head down with bringing the horse’s attention back my hand on the poll or forelock, to themselves calms them enough sending energy down. I may use a to be present, to take the next safe treat the first several times to give step. Perhaps the horse needs to be them the idea. I say the words, “head moved to feel safe; maybe closer to a down”, AS the horse is lowering its friend, remember, they are very social head. Of course, all training comes animals. Sometimes, the horse needs with repeating the exact same aids to go to work to give them something several times, adjusting as necessary to think about, rather than reacting. as follows. Unfortunately, many trainers are This is the order of amount of teaching that the handler must, “show pressure I try use in all situations: the horse who is boss and MAKE SUGGEST>ASK>TELL>INSIST: them do what they want”. 3 if it is resisting, pressure remains the same. 4. If resistance is increased or sustained, I must reevaluate the question I am asking. Perhaps it is too advanced or too physically difficult, so I return to an easier question and watch for compliance. Above all, this is NO PLACE for anger or impatience. If you have limited time, choose a task you already know your horse knows so you can enjoy your time together. Save new questions for days when you aren’t distracted by a clock or friend or work or, or, or… Next month we will look at relaxation under saddle! Until then, center and grow! Monsoon, Global Warning, or is Someone Dropping a Bomb By Justin Legler
Was that June or did Global Warming decide to do it all in one month??? I wasn’t a believer in that conspiracy theory, but maybe I am now after the last 30 days.... MAN..... HOT...... OK, I lied... I still don’t believe in it! I’m more of a believer that the Global Warming theory is for political profit, and that’s about it... I’d rather think that the Devil has his gates open to Hell and the heat is escaping to give us a taste, so we all better BEHAVE!!! OK, maybe that’s just for me .... OR.... It’s a taste for all of us if Hillary gets elected …. HAHAHA.... Welcome to July everyone! I do believe Summer is here.... Justin Legler here with Imperial... How are ya besides HOT??? LOL If you think it’s bad now…. Wait until September when we’ve endured 3+ months of it, and we’re all just whipped from the heat.. Arizonian’s be like, COME ON..... Just cool off already... That’s when the moral of everyone is at its highest and possibly a breaking point... AHHH…… It ain’t that bad come on…. If it was, we all wouldn’t live here... Right!!! This is how I look at it ... Get up, get things done early, and hibernate in the A/C - LOL.. Find a cold beverage you enjoy and drink many.... Get some of those honey do’s in the house done cause I know you got them…. Go head up to the Mountains and enjoy the outdoors cooling off in the pine trees... Load that boat up with them kids or the opposite sex that looks banging in a swimsuit, and go to one of the numerous lakes Arizona has to offer.... Now your starting to remember why we live in “The AZ” ..... There’s plenty to do to stay cool! Just have to get out go do it! If you do, take pictures …. Hopefully the Monsoon has a good year this year, and rains in... No pun intended... If the last days of June are any indicator, it might get a little Western this year! They tried to kill us out in Florence the 2nd night the Monsoon showed its face! Knocked down power poles in three different areas around my house and had to close off some of the roads out here in Florence! The dairy and hay farm on AZ Farms probably had the roughest go though! It knocked down an entire hay barn and turned over a fully loaded semi of hay! It then ripped a bunch of roofing apart and threw it in the cattle pens, continuing to scatter it all over the hayfields! Even an irrigation sprinkler pivot had two center sections that 22
were completely flipped…. Now, how does that even happen??? We even made the morning news… It was one powerful storm.... Prayers and good wishes to all those who were effected especially the dairyman and hay farmer, for a fast rebuild so they can get back to making that money... Be safe this Monsoon Season and be sure you shut your

Thank God it’s a the next President of the United States dry heat *#%*#%*#% .... LOL of America!! Choose wisely! Imperial had a good June across This is how I see it and you may the board. Believe it or not despite the correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m heat, we had some buyers!!! Had a not! The person who is going to couple loads of new trailers and truck vote for Trump works for what they beds come in which didn’t last long!!! have, depends on the government for Our new lines are being received well NOTHING, military background, by our customers and they’re buying loves their country, believes in family, them up… Got a few left and MORE and believes in God! Sound about coming! They should start popping right? in first two weeks of July!!! Stayed The person who is going to vote tuned @ Imperialaz.com or follow us for Hillary are the free loaders living on Facebook @ Imperial Trailer Sales off the government, immigrants here and Livestock Supply, Inc. for the illegally, people who blame racism arrivals… on everything, people who believe Service side just keeps rolling that someone owes them something… them in and knocking them out! There Last but not least…. Government was enough in June that we decided to officials who have been in office more hire a 3rd service technician! Tons of than two terms.. Think I nailed that “Yearly’s” and tons of tires!! The heat one on the head too… is one of my best salesman... I believe If that doesn’t pretty much some they also built 5 ramps, a couple of up how this election is going to fall, hay racks, and finished a nose rebuild! I must have been sleeping the last 9 Beau and the boys will and CAN take months…. Now!!!! Which group has care of all your service needs! Get a more members per my classification, hold of Beau if you still need yours and which group is the minority?… done so you don’t get introduced to I’m hoping like Hell, the Trump group “Mayhem”.... outnumbers Hillary’s group… What Our barn side is still on fire!! do you think?? Pretty Scary! Having our new Production Manager Another thing that still amazes Steve on board is a huge help! Our throughout this candidacy process lead times are reducing and we’ve is how they still all call Trump a got some neat projects finishing up! racist…. Do you think he’s a racist??? Also just broke ground on a 30’x50’ I don’t!!! But I’m white!!! Even after steel building in the East Valley for everyone that has come out to support JULY 2016
the man from all walks of skin color saying he’s NOT a racist, he’s still racist…. He’s a racist because he wants to enforce the immigration law?…. No.... That’s not racist!!!! HE is not a racist!!!! I will tell you what “IS” racist today though!! It’s an award show that is nationally televised and they only allow ONE ethnic group to be a part of…. Basically segregating all other races in this Country by not including any race except them… Who’s racist?? If that’s not bad enough, they start bashing our first responders for some of their ignorant society…. Hey, every race has ignorant people!! That’s not the first responders fault… Until people realize that this is the true segregation here in America, there’s NO fixing this!!! This is RACISM today and if they can’t see it, WELL….. Might as well go piss in the wind! AGAIN…. What’s funnier yet to me, these same people are going to vote for a white women, whose white husband had the same stand as Trump on immigration when he ran for President in 1996! Don’t believe me?? Just get on Facebook…. Now is she a racist for that????? Hell no…. She’s a White Democratic Women…. How dare I say that… She’s great…. I’ve even told strong independent women who are really pushing for her just because she’ll be the first Female President.... Are you sure you want her to set that bar??? With all she’s done??? Come on... Has everyone forgotten…. You remember Watergate?? They made Nixon resign!! What has this Country come to…. She should be in Jail…. Alright, I’m going to put this out there…. I personally think another country will bomb the United States if she’s elected President! They see the weakness already and if we put her in there, they’ll siege the opportunity…. I’m shocked they haven’t done it with Obama in there so don’t think I’m saying just because she’s a women… I’m not… In fact, I wish #Tomi Lahren was running for President for a few reasons… Now that poor girl is being attacked by the media for pretty much saying the same thing I just did... She’s not wrong!!! It’s todays #Merica… It’s a bunch of crap…. #Trump will prevail! #BenCarson for VP… Kick #Hillary’s Butt or someone’s going to BOMB us…. That’s why this Cowboy will be on the beach in Mexico if she gets elected…. I’m not going to get bombed for her… Vote smart... As always, thanks for reading!

Home Spun By Jim Olson
Seven of us jumped on (and all over) a little ford tractor with a brush hog attachment. We headed for the bar. That is just what twenty-one-year-olds tend to do. The tractor chosen happened to be the most convenient mode of transportation available for so many party-goers to arrive, en masse, at the desired establishment. A quick stop at a Circle K on the way to get plenty of refreshments—and we JIM OLSON were off! The tractor belonged to my friend Tod’s boss. Tod had borrowed it to do some work around his place. Because his vehicle was on the fritz, he was also driving it around for local transportation. At closing time, we loaded back up (on and all over) the little tractor and brush hog attachment and headed back towards home. Needless to say, we were feeling “no pain.” I can only imagine what a sight we were, seven drunks hanging all over that thing. On the earlier trip over, experimenting taught us that if about four guys got on the brush hog and only two were on the hood of the tractor (riding it like a bull), the guys on the back could bounce up and down and give the guys on the hood a pretty good ride! That front end would come plumb off the ground with so much weight bouncing on the back! So on the way home, we decided to have a bull (tractor hood) riding contest. We took turns riding the hood in tandem while the guys on the back tried to make the little tractor bounce as crazy as they could! The only problem with this mode of fun, was that as the tractor front end bounced in the air, Tod could not steer the thing. The front tires were plumb off the ground! We were driving back roads home, obviously to avoid the law. On one narrow stretch, there happened to be a large dirt irrigation ditch to one side and a fenced pasture on the other. In a crazy moment of, “elevated tractor front end,” the guys on back all threw their weight to one side, causing the tractor to lean heavily that way. Tod could not steer and we went right through that fellow’s barbed wire fence, taking out several posts and a bunch of wire. The tractor then swerved out of control and somehow wound up on the other side of the little road—in the bottom of that ditch (it was about eight-foot deep). Luckily, the water was only running about a quarter full. Needless to say, we were all soaked. Somehow everyonge escaped serious injury and we were pretty lucky nobody ended up pinned beneath the tractor under water! About that time, the guy who owns the fence comes trotting out of his house, which was a couple hundred yards distant. It was around 2 AM and this guy was mad! Most everyone took off running into the darkness to avoid trouble. I’ll have to admit, that was my first inclination as well. As I watched my friends take off running, I turned to see Tod standing there, waiting for the guy to come over. I decided to wait with my friend. When the mad farmer reached us, I’ll never forget what happened: My friend Tod stuck his hand out and said in a strong, clear voice, “Sir, I am Tod Storey, I live in the area, and I am very sorry about tearing up your fence. If you will let me repair it tonight, just enough so your stock does not escape, I promise you I will be back first thing after daylight and fix it so good so that you will not be able to tell we were ever here.” It must have impressed the man. It sure impressed me. Even though we were probably not very believable looking at that moment, and a drunk will say just about anything, Tod had looked that man right in the eye and was sincere about it. Even a fool could see he would do just exactly what he said. The man calmed down, agreed to the terms, and stood there while we patched that fence back together just good enough so the animals would stay inside. We then walked the remaining few miles home. Once there, we had not slept more than about an hour when I heard Tod rustling in the other room. Even though we were terribly hung over and did not feel well, he was headed back to do exactly what he promised that man he would do. I jumped up to give a hand. We grabbed some supplies, borrowed another neighbors four wheel drive truck and headed out. It was hot. It was humid. I felt like I wanted to lay down and die that muggy morning, but we fixed that fence like it should be. When we were

finished, the man came out of his house and thanked us for keeping our word. He said others had hit his fence in the past, but very few had came back to fix it and make it right. We then pulled the little tractor out of the ditch and got it running once again. After so much hard work, we decided to treat ourselves to lunch at the auction barn cafe. While there, we saw a few of our party buddies from the night before. They could not believe we had hung around when they scattered like quail. Then we went back and did all of that hard work on this hot and muggy morning. What were we thinking!? One of them said, “You should have just reported the tractor stolen! Nobody would have ever known the difference.” My friend Tod simply said, “I would know.” That little incident made a lasting impression on me however. On one hand, you could be like most everybody else and escape trouble with a little evasion and cunning—a little false story. On the other hand, you could be like my friend Tod. Stand up like a man. Own up to your mistakes. Look the world in the eye and do what is right—even when you do not feel like it. I am glad I stuck with Tod that night. Jim Olson ©2016 www.TotallyWestern.com

As told by her at her mother’s memorial service.
4/28/15
There are a lot of people who are not here today and some that are, that deserve an apology, it's not a secret my mom closed her self off when dad died, she made choices, and I don't and didn't have to agree with them, but I had to support her in many ways that know one will ever understand. I'm not making excuses, I'm acknowledging the efforts everyone tried to make and I appreciate the efforts and I know she did also, she was never the same after loosing her one love - Bob. 2/02 dad died and I think we pretty much laid mom to rest that same day, I feel like I'm hear all over again for dad and mom....she tried.....boy did she try .......I'm not even to half the time spent with my husband that she had with dad....who knows maybe that is normal, but for 14 years after ...she struggled with finding a purpose, a love a passion all over again, since dad died she spent the first 7 years trying to keep up with me all over again she thought she was done with me along time ago, we ran a business, then I gave her, her fifth grandchild, that she spent pretty much every day with, then how the tables turnd I spent the last 7 years of the 14 trying to keep up with her, touche' mamma touche'. Trying to keep her separate and run down memory lane, and to plan for this and keep it about her, well let's just say that was not easy, it was Bob and Kay ...period, only one person alive that is me that knows Kay, after Bob, and I think there are only a few that new her before Bob, either way none of us were missing out !!!!! These are not in order but some highlights I noted, when dialing in for this-My parents founded Boka ranch brand in 1962 -Kay's First holly communion for 12:26mom PM 1947 -Kay Elementary school done in 1952
JULY 2016
-Son Cliff and Donna married 1999 -Daughter Christy and Nick married in 09 -June 30 1962 Mom and Dad got married - Kay sorority was Kappa Delta Kappa for her ASU college days - Kay was Babtised June 1938 -1956 graduated high school -1960 graduated ASU with BA in education -1960 became a member of Azqha -1980 created and ran the Arizona National Livestock Show -4 H leader since 1982 -Past president of Azqha - Son Cliff was born 1972 -Daughter Christy was born 1976 - Taught grade school in Madison and Gilbert and Judson school from 1960 - 1980-ish . Her first client to win a gold medal in the special olympics 1993 Cristy McRarry. The K team..... the list is long...... her kids, her life.... her world..... she taught me how to treat my now Christy's Angels!!! 1/16/96 Dude !!! the crappy appy that made more headlines than any horse of hers.......we lost mighty fine Dude. 1988 Mom applied for the equine science department at Maricopa community college, Head teacher job, with the first sentence saying this...... please forgive me for being blunt but I sincerely hope you are seeking a person with a firm hand and definite plan to make the equine department one that will be respected through-out the nation (she didn't get the job). Moms birthday is today on the day we let her rest.....and be re-born with dad When dad died I made a promise if ur feeling empty I'll fill your heart, if we're ever silent I'll sit quietly with you, if you doubt, I'll find ur courage, if the climb is steep, I'll hold your hand, if you say who cares, I'll remind you how very much you do..... I found the poem she wrote when dad died He is gone and tears I cry, and of course I wonder why, he is gone things do change and I must try, I have a choice to do or die and remember why...... he is my love and I will try. Who she has left behindCliff Donna Snyder, Wyatt, Taylor, Payton Adriana, Caleb, Isaac, Me and Nick, Laura, Michelle, Jeff, Lisa, Brynen, Shaylynn.

Diatomaceous Earth
(food grade): Bug killer you can eat! 3 SUPER LOCATIONS!
More than Your Average Pet Store! JULY 2016
Diatonaceous Earth (often referred to as “DE”) is an off white talc-like powder that is fossilized remains of marine phytoplankton. When sprinkled on a bug that has an exoskeleton (such as bed bugs, ants or fleas( it compromises their waxy coating so that their innards turn into teeny tiny bug jerky. But it does not hurt mammals. We can eat it. We do eat it! It’s in lots of grain based foods because lots of grains are stored with diatomaceous earth to keep the bugs from eating the grain!

Optimal Digestion for your horse.
The health of your horse relies on the proper balance of bacteria in its digestive system. Unfortunately, transporting, dietary and

Pain relief for your horse. Neprofin is a revolutionary new pain treatment for the alleviation of lameness in horses. Originally formulated to work on the same scientific principles as NSAID’s and phenylbutazone (bute), these enzymes have since proven effective on sprains, fractures, rheumatoid arthritis and osterarthritis. Neprofin assists with tissue repair, reduces fluid formation, accelerates the healing process and can be adopted as a replacement therapy in pathological conditions.
USE NEPROFIN FOR:
Improved energy levels Inflammation, pain and muscle soreness Sprains, fractures, arthritic conditions Accelerated healing Great for household pets too

AFTER NEPROFIN AVF USE
This mare has an old injury to the lateral side of her right front cannon bone, with deep scarring. There was extensive soft tissue damage which restricted her movement, causing a shortness of stride. This image shows visible enlargement of the soft tissue injury by its heat signature from recurrent inflammation. Note that the right leg is visibly larger than the left leg.
Following 8 weeks of Neprofin administration, this mare showed a marked improvement. Heat signatures have returned to normal, showing virtually no signs of inflammation or pain. Neprofin was able to digest and eliminate the inflamed scar tissue mass, which had caused lameness and a shortened stride. Note that both legs are now identical in size and shape. The mare is now sound and bears weight evenly on both front legs.

California Rodeo Salinas News

California Rodeo Salinas will host its 29th annual Cowboy Music & Poetry Gathering at 1 p.m. July 17 at Sherwood Hall in Salinas. The headliner this year is Dave Stamey, well-known in the Western music world for his talents, and a past crowd pleaser in Salinas. Larry Maurice will also be performing, and Monterey County poet Clem Albertoni will be emceeing the event. For more information, call 831.320.5939 or email salinascowboypoetry@gmail. com ...
Tommy Lucia, who was voted PRCA Entertainer of the Year 2003-05 and Texas Circuit Act of the Year four times, passed away June 1 on his 75th birthday. Lucia began his rodeo career at the age of 15 riding bareback horses and bulls. When a friend was injured, he filled in as a rodeo clown. He quit clowning in 1984, but continued with his amazing acts, which included Glory, his swayback horse, and Whiplash, the monkey in full cowboy attire who rode a dog. Lucia performed at the National Finals Rodeo as the opening act for five years. He also was a barrelman at the 1973 NFR. Lucia’s acts weren’t just limited to the rodeo arena. He also performed during the NBA playoffs and at Major League Baseball games, as well as doing shows for Frank Sinatra and many others as well as shooting multiple commercials over the years. This past September, Lucia was inducted into the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum’s Rodeo Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City. Lucia is survived by his children, Anthony, Josh, Poppy, Tommy Joe and Dominic. He was a World Champion Barrel Horse. He was an AQHA Horse of the year. He was a Wrangler National Finals Qualifier. He was a champion Derby and Sweepstakes barrel horse. His accomplishments are pages long. Most importantly though, he was a member of the family. Kristie remembered, “He was the first thing Chuck saw in the morning and the last thing he saw every night.
French Flash Hawk “Bozo” 1987 – 2016 He was an important member of our family, and we loved him more than words can say.” “Bozo,” as the world knew him took on life on his own terms. He was deemed an outlaw when the Peterson’s purchased him as a twoyear-old, where he was ridden in the feedlot. It didn’t take long for an

incredible bond to form between Bozo and Peterson. She knew everything about him and understood his independence. To her, he was so much more than a barrel horse. “Bozo was meant to do what he did. He absolutely loved running barrels, in fact, I believe it was his passion. Competing made him happy and he always ran with his heart – every single run. He was independent his whole life, never needing or wanting much affection. He liked to be on his own and do his own thing but, when it came to running barrels, he loved to please,” Peterson said. Not many of us will have the fortune to own a horse like Bozo and only a few will truly understand how much of a connection he and his owners had. He was a true champion that in keeping with his tradition, picked his own time to pass on. “We were a little worried about him this year because he was 29 and we knew how hot it was going to be during the summer. He was so sensitive to mosquitos and bugs in general. With all the rain we were having we knew it was going to be hard on him. We had even considered taking him to Colorado with us this summer when we left, but we didn’t
know how well he would handle all the travel,” Kristie said. Bozo died peacefully at their home. He knew it was time and they did, too. He left an incredible legacy behind. It was him and his success that led the Peterson family to the Frenchmans Guy bloodlines. The family had also just decided to purchase a PC Frenchmans Hayday (Bozo’s full brother) bred broodmare so that there would always be a little bit of Bozo on their place. In a fast paced world where horses are bought and sold, traded, and people move on, Kristie Peterson and Bozo had that special bond where each loved and respected the other.

Del Mar will present 43 stakes events during its 39-day season worth a total of $7.55 million, highlighted by the seaside course’s ‘piece de resistance’ – the $1-million TVG Pacific Classic, scheduled for Saturday, August 20. The track’s 77th summer gathering alongside the blue Pacific will take place from Friday, July 15 through Labor Day Monday, September 5. The shore oval’s 33 major, or “advertised,” stakes again will carry purses ranging from $100,000 to $1,000,000, while its 10 “overnight”

The Classic, run at a mile and one quarter and open to 3-yearolds and up, will headline a stakes tripleheader afternoon that also will offer the Grade I, $300,000 Del Mar Oaks and the Grade II, $250,000 Del Mar Handicap. The Oaks, for 3-yearold fillies, is run at nine furlongs, while the Handicap, an 11-furlong marathon, is for 3-year-olds and up. Both of those races will be contested
over the Jimmy Durante Turf Course. Twenty of the stakes will be run on the track’s popular grass course, which was totally replaced and expanded for the 2014 season. The other 23 stakes are on a main track that was returned to dirt for the 2015 session following eight previous years of racing on the synthetic surface Polytrack.

25 Year Future Lease for Presoctt Frontier Days With the conclusion of the 129th World’s Oldest Rodeo at Prescott (Ariz.) Frontier Days appears poised to enter a lease that will ensure that the rodeo has a home in Prescott for at least another 25 years. Prescott Frontier Days Board Member Mary Ann Suttles attended the Prescott City Council’s June 21 study session to discuss the lease that has been proposed between the city – the owners of the Prescott Rodeo Grounds – and Prescott Frontier Days, the event’s organizers. Under the terms of the draft document, the lease would run for 25 years, with a possibility of a five-year extension in the 22nd year. Although no vote occurred at the study session, both Suttles and council members voiced support for the draft agreement. 62

USDA, Partners to Invest Over $11 Million in 21st Century
Corps to Hire 1,500 Youth and Veterans for Summer Forest Projects WASHINGTON, June 7, 2016 — As National Get Outdoors Month begins, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced today that the U.S. Forest Service and partners have invested over $11 million to support work and training opportunities for more than 1,500 youth and veterans on national
forests and grasslands in fiscal year 2016. The funds support the 21st Century Conservation Service Corps (21CSC), a public-private initiative to connect America’s youth and veterans with job opportunities that conserve and sustain our natural and cultural resources. “The 21st Century Conservation Service Corps experience transforms the lives of our veterans and youth, allowing them to connect to the great outdoors and become part of
the next generation of natural and cultural resource conservationists,” said Vilsack. “This public-private collaboration provides participants with new skills and inspires and connects them to the forests and communities in which they work.” Over the last two years, the Forest Service has engaged 20,000 youth and veterans through partnerships with 21CSC member organizations and other institutions. This year participants will focus on more than 120 priority projects across the country working on a range of issues

from restoration, hazardous fuels management and watershed protection to trails and facilities maintenance while helping to develop the next generation of conservation stewards and the agency’s workforce. “The 21CSC program allows our youth and veterans to gain the personal and professional skills they need to build their conservation careers while protecting, restoring and enhancing some of the country’s most treasured public lands,” said Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell. “These partnerships and the people who make them work are building a bright future for conservation in America.” The Forest Service and partners make investments in 21CSC throughout the year. Today’s announcement includes national and regional Forest Service investments of $6.5 million with additional partner investments of $3.7 million in funding. The National Forest Foundation has also leveraged an additional $1.5 million for 21CSC projects so far in 2016. Last month the Department of the Interior, USDA, and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation announced $3.16 million in 21CSC funding to put young people to work on 60 additional projects. Today’s opportunities for hands-on service from Vermont and Georgia to Alaska and Hawaii include, California - A crew of 45 youth from the Los Angeles Conservation Corps will perform riparian restoration through the treatment of persistent invasive weeds in the Big Tujunga watershed of the recently designated San Gabriel Mountains National Monument in California. Colorado - On the White River National Forest in Colorado, more than a dozen Rocky Mountain Youth Corps members will make improvements to motorized and nonmotorized recreational trails through 17 crew weeks of focused stewardship work to benefit the Forest’s heavily visited trail systems. These projects and more than 100 others across the country will provide participants with valuable life and work skills, while building lifelong connections to America’s special places. Find out how to join a Corps this summer and other details on the www.21csc.org website. Around the World with AQHA President Sandy Arledge
AQHA President Sandy Arledge enjoys traveling and sharing her love for the American Quarter Horse.
The San Luis Obispo County Quarter Horse Association held its 50th annual Mother’s Day Circuit in Paso Robles, California, and I was thrilled to be able to celebrate the anniversary of the longestrunning AQHA show in California. This is a show with a terrific list of cattle classes that are very well attended. The walk-jog classes are also anticipated by many! The show is very well run by the attentive show management and is extremely exhibitor friendly. While there, I had the chance to visit with fellow AQHA Professional Horsewoman of the Year Cynthia Cantleberry, who continues to enjoy riding and teaching folks the fine art of showing. When I moved to California in 1970, I had only shown in cutting, western pleasure, reining, halter and the speed events. I had never seen a trail class and had certainly never shown over obstacles. To me, a “trail” horse was one that went to the hills! I decided that showing at the Del Mar National Horse Show would be a good place to try the class and was offered a trail horse to give it a go. I introduced myself to Cynthia, and she was very helpful to me. As a newcomer, I appreciated her suggestions. I went on to train trail horses that were very successful, and I owe Cynthia for the kind encouragement she gave me then and in the following years. My advice to everyone in the equine industry is to never be afraid to ask for help, especially from an AQHA Professional Horseman. I

clearly remember my friends Karen, Patsy and David, with whom I spent countless carefree hours riding on the farm and in the piney woods that surrounded it. The place was owned by a kind gentleman named P.A. Griffin. P.A. was a trader and dealt in all things livestock, but mostly horses. He was not above taking any kind of animal, machine or vehicle in trade. It was an interesting education in evaluating livestock and learning how to negotiate. I spent hours at sale barns with him and rode all kinds of horses, many of which were barely broke. It is amazing that I never hit the ground, except when one of the boys “heeled” me in the parking lot – bad boy! Those memories are often rekindled when I see kiddos enjoying their American Quarter Horses and their families in a bucolic setting. Such was the case a couple weekends ago, when I celebrated with friends and family members at a barbecue, roping and dance in Prescott, Arizona. Friends and family from Louisiana, Texas, California and Arizona gathered to ride, rope, eat, dance and play. Everyone brought their kids, horses and dogs to join in the fun, and it was a terrific weekend! No one got hurt; the horses worked up to expectations; the band played wonderful music; and there was enough food and drink for a battalion. The kids were especially fun to watch, with the little boys and girls emulating their parents, riding and roping. In my opinion, there’s no better way to spend the weekend than with horses, dogs and kids. I look forward to sharing my upcoming travels and experiences as your AQHA president in my next blog. Stay tuned to www.aqha.com for more blog posts.
After months of deliberation, the National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) Board of Directors has announced the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity, one of the largest and most prestigious events in the Western performance horse industry, will be held at the historic Will Rogers Equestrian Center in Fort Worth, Texas, beginning in 2017. The NRCHA has committed to hold the Snaffle Bit Futurity in Fort Worth for the next three years, through 2019. In December 2015, the NRCHA announced it was seeking a community partner to host the Snaffle Bit Futurity in 2017 and beyond. More than a dozen facilities made initial contact after the public request for proposal. Four facilities - located in Denver, Fort Worth, Reno, and Scottsdale - submitted complete written bids detailing suitability and interest. The NRCHA outlined specific selection criteria, including facility location and amenities; availability of incentive and sponsorship money; and reasonable access to cattle. “The Board took its time with this decision. All the proposals we
National Reined Cow Horse Association Selects New Snaffle Bit Futurity Venue
The NRCHA’s largest Premier Event moves to Fort Worth, Texas, in 2017 received were attractive, with Fort Worth providing the most appealing package overall. The Will Rogers facility was much more affordable than the other locations, as far as what it is charging the NRCHA to hold the Futurity there. The amenities, cattle supply, and the central location in a great city like Fort Worth, convinced the Board that it would be the ideal home for the Snaffle Bit Futurity,” said NRCHA President Todd Bergen, Eagle Point, Oregon. Further adding to Fort Worth’s appeal was a substantial Futurity added money offer from a group of reined cow horse owners, breeders, exhibitors, and professionals, representing all regions of the U.S.. This coalition supported the Fort Worth location by pledging a large bonus to the payout for three years if the Futurity moved there. The bonus added money currently stands at six figures and growing, as more supporters join the effort. “This additional money means we will be awarding the 2017 through 2019 Futurity Open Champion a check for $125,000, as compared to
our traditional $100,000 payout,” said NRCHA Vice-President Paul Bailey, Sparta, Tennessee. “Furthermore, it is our hope that this funding will allow us to award all the Futurity Open finalists a check for at least $10,000, as well as increase the payout for the Futurity Non-Pro divisions.” Besides the venue change, the 2017 Snaffle Bit Futurity will also come with a date change, tentatively scheduled for October 1 - 14. Exhibitors can also look forward to a more forgiving show schedule, because the NRCHA will have access to the entire Will Rogers Equestrian Center complex, including all show, warmup and sale arenas, barns, and exhibit space. This will permit the association to streamline the schedule to better accommodate participants and spectators, while continuing to offer an exciting lineup of Snaffle Bit Futurity Horse Sales and a vibrant shopping experience at the popular Best of the West Trade Show. “We anticipate growth across the board at the Snaffle Bit Futurity in 2017 and beyond,” Bergen said. “Moving to Fort Worth puts our
Dave Graf bw
biggest event in the middle of the country, within easier reach for participants, and we are expecting growth in entries. As if the Futurity didn’t give a reined cow horse fan enough reason to come to Fort Worth in early October, that time of year usually means wonderful weather, not to mention all the recreational and cultural opportunities outside the show arena.” Bergen emphasized the gravity of the Board’s decision to re-locate the Futurity from its historic home on the West coast. Reno has been home to the majority of Snaffle Bit Futurities since the first event in 1970. “There is an emotional attachment to the Snaffle Bit Futurity being a West coast event, and I believe all of us on the Board acknowledge the history with Reno. The Board labored long and hard over this decision. We were very engaged in the process of trying to ensure that we chose what was in the best interest of the NRCHA for its future growth. We look to the future with optimism, feeling as if we have taken a positive step for the entire association,” Bergen said.
The “Shoe” Definitely Fits For Riggle
Nicole Riggle Central Point, Oregon — For Arizona barrel racer Nicole Riggle, the “Shoe” definitely fits when it comes to running barrels. Shoe is Riggle’s main rodeo mount, a stout bay gelding who is registered with the American Quarter Horse Association as Shoeless Joe Biankus. Now 13 years old, Shoe and Riggle first got together three years ago, during Riggle’s rookie season in the WPRA. “I bought him from [barrel racer and producer] Bobo McMillan,” notes Riggle of the son of Captain Biankus. “He was already a really nice open horse and Bobo had run him at a few
rodeos.” Riggle was riding a tough grey mare she called Cici that year, so she put Shoe on the road as well to get him seasoned to life as a pro barrel horse. She finished fifth in the rookie race that year. In 2014, Shoe became the main mount for Riggle, carrying her to the pay window at several big rodeos and landing in the top 50 in the WPRA World standings. Unfortunately, Shoe’s season came to an abrupt end at the Lewiston (ID) rodeo that fall. “He got hurt in September,” Riggle says. “He was off all of 2015.” With just a year’s delay in the plan, Riggle has tackled the 2016 rodeo season at full steam. Shoe came back in time for the start of the season in the fall of 2015. He picked up right where he left off, winning big checks at places like Billings, Mont., and Shreveport, La. “I started him back this year and he feels stronger than ever,” says Riggle, who is sponsored by Seabuck, Usher Brand, Aqua Stride Hydrotherapy at the Tucson Equestrian Center, Lame Away and F1 Noni. That fact seemed apparent during

the first weekend of June when Riggle traveled the West Coast for rodeos in Santa Maria, Calif., and Central Point, Ore. Riggle and Shoe dominated the weekend, winning in Oregon and taking second in California for a tworodeo haul of $3,542. Shoe showed his versatility, handling the wide open spaces of Santa Maria with just as much ease as the 13-second indoor pattern in Oregon. “He was trying his hardest,” Riggle agrees. With the summer run officially kicked off, there were lots of rodeos to enter on the weekend but Riggle went for quality over quantity for Shoe. “Ground is his biggest thing,” she notes. “If it gets harder, he can’t grab it but I knew that both Central Point and Santa Maria have good ground and I like those two rodeos.” Riggle started at Santa Maria, where she posted a 17.49 second run on the WPRA standard pattern. “Santa Maria is a really fun rodeo; the crowd is amazing there,” notes Riggle, who left winning first but would be bumped from the lead by rookie Katie Pascoe, who posted a 17.42. Moving north to Oregon, Riggle and Shoe scampered through the pattern inside the Seven Feathers Event Center in 13.67 seconds. Kelsie Miller would come closest at 13.73 but Riggle would earn the victory worth $1,858. “He worked really good,” Riggle says of Shoe’s effort at Central Point’s Wild Rogue Pro Rodeo, noting that she works hard at making sure he finished his turns strong. “I have to make sure he stays round and that I don’t ask too soon and let him cut the turn off. This is especially true for the first barrel, it’s the most important
there.” “He made a great first barrel and then on the second, we got really close on the back side and I had to lift my leg over it,” she laughs. “He made three, pretty, close turns.” The win in Central Point was special for Riggle and not just for the confidence it gives her riding into the summer. “I love Central Point; it’s like coming home,” says Riggle, who grew up in Washington. Riggle is sticking close to her roots in the Northwest for a few days and will compete in the Sisters (Ore.) Rodeo later this week before headed out to Livermore, Calif., and then to Utah. She is claiming the Wilderness Circuit this year after several years in the California Circuit. “In 2014, Shoe won a ton of money at the Utah rodeos so I thought I’d stick with the ones that I know he does well at,” says Riggle, who has put a lot of thought into her game plan for this season.
U.S. Forest Service
The mission of the U.S. Forest Service, part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is to sustain the health, diversity and productivity of the nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations. The agency manages 193 million acres of public land, provides assistance to state and private landowners, and maintains the largest forestry research organization in the world. Public lands managed by the Forest Service contribute more than $13 billion to the economy each year through visitor spending alone. Those same lands provide 20 percent of the nation’s clean water supply, a value estimated at $7.2 billion per year.

Sonya Distefano Wins 2016 NRCHA Derby Amateur Championship
Horse and Rider Alterations Specializing in clothing for riding apparel.
When Sonya DiStefano wrapped up her preliminary runs, scoring a 632.5 at the 2016 NRCHA Derby, she not only qualified for the Novice Non Pro finals – she also earned the Amateur Championship! DiStefano, a 17-year-old from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is showing in her first NRCHA Premier Limited Age Event on her first derby horse, who she has only been riding for a couple of months – but she didn’t let the pressure keep her from shining in the show pen. “I was intimidated and nervous to come here for the first time, because I haven’t showed in a big derby, just our local ones. I just showed my horse like I did at home, and he was good,” the polite, soft-spoken teen said.

Riding her new horse, Reys Stylish Bell (Dual Rey x Blues Stylish Bell x Doc’s Stylish Oak), DiStefano earned $1,268 when she scored a 632.5 composite (217 herd/215 rein/200 cow). The Amateur Championship also came with a Gist buckle and gift certificates from Platinum Performance and San Juan Ranch/ Santa Cruz Animal Health. “My horse was really good in the rein work and really good in the herd work. We had a little tough luck down the fence, but we had enough
GP
of a lead from our first two events that we were able to hold our spot in the Amateur,” DiStefano said. She has been riding with Canadian professional Cody McArthur for the past three years. DiStefano started her NRCHA career showing a bridle horse, and when she was ready to shop for a derby horse, McArthur thought Reys Stylish Bell, who belonged to his wife, Farrah, might be a good match. The deal was made, and DiStefano took her new horse’s reins in April, after the NRCHA Stakes in Las Vegas, Nevada. “I love him. I couldn’t be happier. He’s so sweet and easy to ride, and he does his job. You don’t have to train hard on him. He’s calm and relaxed and talented,” she said, describing the horse known as “Trouble” around the barn. “I’m hoping to do the Idaho Reined Cow Horse Association Derby [in October], and I’m hoping to get him qualified in the hackamore to go to the NRCHA World Show. Then he’ll be a bridle horse and I want to do spectaculars and everything with him, so I”m very excited for the future with him.” DiStefano thanked her support group, both in the barn and at home, for helping her achieve her dreams. “My mom and dad are so supportive of what I do, and the horses and the training and traveling. They’re so great. My coach, Cody, is amazing. I love him – he’s taught me so much, and Farrah has been a huge support.”

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today announced the availability of $8.4 million in competitive grants to support the work of partner organizations that provide training, outreach and technical assistance for socially disadvantaged, Tribal and Veteran farmers and ranchers. USDA's Outreach and Assistance for Socially Disadvantaged and Veteran Farmers and Ranchers Program, also known as the 2501 Program, is administered by the Office of Advocacy and Outreach (OAO). "Diverse experiences, background and education are vital to a healthy agricultural sector that continues to meet the challenges of a changing world and the demands of markets at home and abroad," said Acting Deputy Agriculture Secretary Michael Scuse. "The 2501 Program is an important part of how USDA partners with land-grant universities, Tribal colleges, Tribes, nonprofits and other community-based organizations to grow the next generation of agricultural innovators and entrepreneurs that keep American agriculture the most productive anywhere." Since 2010, more than $74 million has been invested through the 2501 Program to leverage the work of more than 300 local partners. The 2014 Farm Bill reauthorized the program and expanded assistance to include military veterans. Partner organizations provide a range of services and technical assistance based on local needs. Last fall, for example, 2501 funding was used to create the Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers Policy Research Center at Alcorn State University, in Lorman, Miss. The Center will provide a national
hub for analysis and development of policy recommendations to improve engagement and promote the interests of socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers. Proposals for these competitive grants must be received by July 29, 2016 at www.grants.gov. Details are available in the June 27, 2016 Federal Register Notice or by contacting USDA, by mail at Office of Advocacy and Outreach, Attn: Kenya Nicholas, Program Director, Whitten Building, Room 520-A, Mail Stop 0601, 1400 Independence Avenue SW., Washington, DC 20250, by phone: (202) 720-6350, Fax: (202) 720-7704, or email OASDVFR2016@osec.usda. gov. OAO works across USDA agencies to improve the viability and profitability of small and beginning farmers and ranchers; improve access to USDA programs for historically underserved communities; increase agricultural opportunities for farm workers; and close the professional achievement gap by providing opportunities for diverse, talented young people to support the agricultural industry in the 21st century. The 2501 program supports USDA's Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food (KYF2) Initiative that coordinates the Department's work to develop strong local and regional food systems. USDA is committed to helping farmers, ranchers, and businesses access the growing market for local and regional foods, which industry estimates valued at $12 billion in 2014. USDA Forest Service and Partners Gear Up for Significant 2016 Wildfire Season Current Outlook Underscores Need to Reform Wildfire Funding
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell met today with Forest Service Regional Foresters to discuss preparations for anticipated significant wildland fire potential in 2016. The briefing comes as the 2016 fire season has begun with five times more acres already burned than this time last year, following 2015's record-setting fire season. "The 2016 wildfire season is off to a worrisome start. Southern California, the Great Basin in Nevada, portions of the southwest, and even Florida and Hawaii are particularly vulnerable this year. In California, more than 40 million trees have died, becoming dry fuel for wildfire," said Vilsack. "Congress must take action now to ensure that we, and, ultimately the firefighters we ask so much of, have the resources to do the restoration and wildfire prevention work necessary to keep our forests healthy." Forest Service Chief Tidwell underscored the Forest Service's commitment to ensuring the protection of firefighters' lives. Last year, seven members of the Forest Service firefighting team were lost in the line of duty, and 4,500 homes were damaged or destroyed. This year the Forest Service is able to mobilize 10,000 firefighters, 900 engines, 300 helicopters, 21 airtankers, 2 water scoopers and over 30 aerial supervision fixed-wing aircraft. Together with federal, state and local partners, the agency is positioned to
respond wherever needed. "The job of fighting wildfires has become increasingly difficult due to the effects of climate change, chronic droughts and development within Wildland-Urban Interface areas," said Tidwell. "We must do what is necessary to ensure we have the resources to perform restoration and wildfire prevention work essential to keep our forests healthy." Climate change has led to fire seasons that are, on average, 78 days longer than they were in 1970 and, on average, the number of acres burned each year has doubled since 1980. As a result, the Forest Service's firefighting budget is regularly exhausted before the end of the wildfire season, forcing the Forest Service to abandon critical restoration and capital improvement projects in order to suppress extreme fires. The cost of the Forest Service's wildfire suppression reached a record $243 million in a one-week period during the height of suppression activity in August 2015. With a record 52 percent of the Forest Service's budget dedicated to fire suppression activities, compared to just 16 percent in 1995, the Forest Service's firefighting budget was exhausted in 2015, forcing USDA to transfer funds away from forest restoration projects that would help reduce the risk of future fires, in order to cover the high cost of battling blazes. Last December Vilsack told members of Congress that he will not authorize transfers from
restoration and resilience funding this fire season. Instead, Vilsack has directed the Forest Service to use funds as they were intended. For example, restoration work through programs like the Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Program and implementation of the National Cohesive Strategy (link is external), are reducing the size and severity of wildfires. USDA, the U.S. Department of the Interior and other partners are working with at-risk communities to promote community and homeowner involvement in mitigating wildfire risk, reducing hazardous fuels and accomplishing treatments that increase forest health and resilience. "We keep setting records we don't want to see beat. According to the National Interagency Fire Center, over the last 10 years we've seen 16 of the most historically significant wildfires on record," said Vilsack. "Only focused prevention and forest restoration work can help us turn the corner, so I have directed the Forest Service to aggressively use the funding provided in the 2016 Fiscal Year budget to support forest management, restoration, research, and partnership work to help get ahead of the severe wildfire problem and to focus on providing other services that the American public expects from the Forest Service." Even a so-called normal year is far worse than it used to be. On average, wildfires burn twice as much land area each year as they did 40 years ago and the threat continues to increase.
Over the last two years, $237 million has been permanently shifted from the Forest Service non-fire budget forcing the department to abandon critical restoration and capital improvement projects in order to suppress extreme fires. This loss in funds to firefighting took place before a single fire broke out in 2016. For the first time in its 111-year history, over half of the Forest Service's 2015 budget was designated to fight wildfires, compared to just 16 percent in 1995. 2015 was the most expensive fire season in the department's history, costing more than $2.6 billion on fire alone. The mission of the U.S. Forest Service, part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is to sustain the health, diversity and productivity of the nation's forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations. The agency manages 193 million acres of public land, provides assistance to state and private landowners, and maintains the largest forestry research organization in the world. Public lands managed by the Forest Service contribute more than $13 billion to the economy each year through visitor spending alone. Those same lands provide 20 percent of the nation's clean water supply, a value estimated at $7.2 billion per year. The agency has either a direct or indirect role in stewardship of about 80 percent of the 850 million forested acres within the U.S., of which 100 million acres are urban forests where most Americans live.
Preserve trails and apply for trail conservation funding by August 1st.
STEP is designed to encourage good stewardship and conservation of recreational riding trails. Grant applications for Stewards for Trails, Education and Partnerships are due August 1. STEP, a program of the American Quarter Horse Association, is designed to encourage good stewardship and conservation of recreational riding trails. The program’s mission is to promote equestrian involvement in the restoration, repair and establishment of trails. STEP hopes to unify horseback riders and other trail users in an effort to build and strengthen relationships 82
between local equestrian communities, the forest service and other land managers for the longterm stewardship of trails. Each year, AQHA encourages horse enthusiasts to volunteer their time and resources to trail maintenance and development of public and private land. This can include anything from clearing shrubs or branches on existing trails to developing new trails. Here’s how some STEP grant reciepents used their funding: The friends of Kings Mountain State Park in Gaffney, South Carolina, were granted $6,000 to build, manage and maintain an additional 17 miles of trails in the park.
The Back Country Horsemen of Alabama in Warrior, Alabama, received a grant of $5,000 to build five bridges for safe crossings in Rickwood Caverns State Park. The Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado received a grant of $2,000 to construct 1,700 feet of new trail and five climbing turns in Cheyenne Maintain State Park, which is one of the newest parks in Colorado and the only state park in El Paso County. Groups or individuals can organize and complete trail conservation projects on any public and/or private land. Simply coordinate with your trail’s land manager, register your project with AQHA and then head to the trails.
JULY 2016
Anyone who enjoys horseback riding on trails and wants to see these trails preserved for years to come is welcome to participate. Trail conservation projects are great for riding clubs, 4-H groups and youth organizations. Applications must be received by AQHA on or before August 1 to be considered for funding. Download a printable application. For more information on STEP or to apply for a grant, visit www.aqha. com/step. AQHA News and information is a service of the American Quarter Horse Association. WPRA PRESIDENT’S UPDATE
Doreen Wintermute As we enter the heart of the rodeo season, planning your rodeo schedule becomes a priority. I wanted to take this time to remind you of a program specific to the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association that was created as a way to provide additional opportunities for all members to reach their Goals! This program is called the WPRA TOUR! The WPRA Tour program was created in 2012, and is a program that has grown to give opportunities to all members of the WPRA by providing a path into some of the best limited entry rodeos nationwide. Initially the program allowed each Circuit Director to select two rodeo’s in their circuit to be part of this program. In 2016, we have grown to five rodeos per circuit and five in Canada, totaling 65 rodeos nationwide. The WPRA Tour Program is designed for these 65 rodeos to serve as qualifying rounds to get into limited entry rodeos such as Houston, Calgary, Denver, Austin, Prescott, Ariz., and Tucson, Ariz. With this unique Tour, WPRA members that can’t rodeo fulltime still have an opportunity to reach their goal of competing at RodeoHouston and the Calgary Stampede. Two ladies that took advantage of the WPRA Tour in the inaugural year included Jean Winters and Shada Brazile. Winters, won the WPRA Qualifying Tour race at the WPRA World Finals in 2012 to earn a spot in the Calgary Stampede. She would go on to win the 2013 Calgary Stampede and qualify for her first Wrangler
NFR. In 2012, Brazile captured the most points on the new WPRA Tour earning her a spot in the Calgary Stampede in 2013. With her success and opportunities in 2013, she would go on to secure a berth in the Wrangler NFR. So the WPRA Tour can open doors that can lead to great success. The WPRA Tour is based on a point system. The point system starts with 15 points to the winner of the rodeo and goes down to
the last position that monies are earned. The standings are then used to determine qualification for the limited entry rodeos where applicable based on the rodeo approval. Many of the 65 rodeos on the WPRA Tour will be contested in the upcoming months, so be sure to visit the WPRA website for a complete schedule, standings, and the information you need to put this into your plans for 2016!
This program works!!! This program provides opportunity!!! This program is what all WPRA members are asking for!!! This program can be put into you rodeo route!!! This program will make your dreams come true!!! IT WILL WORK, IF YOU WORK IT!!!! Good Luck! God Bless Doreen

Any number of suspenseful adjectives could accurately describe the road to the Derby Non Pro Limited Championship for Anne Albert of Roy, Washington. It involved a tie, followed by another tie, the possibility of a coChampionship, and finally, a cow work-off to decide the title once and for all. “I’ve always wanted to come to this horse show, and to come here the first time and win it – I’m ecstatic,” Albert said.
Anne Albert Wins 2016 NRCHA Derby Non Pro Limited Championship
After the first two events, the rein work and herd work, Albert and her gelding, White Knight Time (One Time Pepto x Little Lady Stylish x Smart Little Uno), were tied for first place with Erin Mendes and Recklessly Abandoned (Smart Little Pepinic x Wright Now Ima Star x Lenas Wright On). Both riders had 424.5 composite scores. A third rider,
Linda Wood, was just a half-point behind them heading into the third phase, the cow work.
“I thought that was so fun, to be going into the boxing with the top three so close. You want everybody to win. I want her to win, and her to win… but darn it, I want to win too! I would have been just as happy for one of the others if they had been the one to win,” Albert said. “It could have been anybody’s win. Those girls were

Anne Albert so game-ready! It was fun.” But as it turned out, one round of boxing wasn’t enough to break the tie: both Albert and Mendes guided their horses to identical 217.5 cow work scores, which left them with a matching 642 on three events. Firstplace ties are broken by the cow work score, but because those were also the same, there was talk of a coChampionship. Ultimately, it came down to a work-off. Mendes boxed her second cow for a big score of 218, while Albert scored a bigger 222 for the win. Albert took home a check for $1,592, along with a Gist buckle and a gift certificate from Platinum Performance. It was the second consecutive NRCHA Premier Event title for Albert; she and “Rudy” had claimed the Non Pro Limited Stallion Stakes Championship in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the end of March. “He’s an easy, super fun horse to show,” she said, describing the gelding she purchased sight-unseen from the National Cutting Horse Association 2-year-old sale in Fort Worth, Texas. “I think every non pro should have a horse like him. He’s so polite and so funny. He’s like a gentleman with a real wicked sense of humor. You can always count on him to open a door or pull out your chair. Mister polite, but funnier than heck.” Albert thanked her previous trainer, Dean McCann, Graham, Washington, who she credits with teaching Rudy plus-quality reining maneuvers. She now spends “every weekend I can – about three weekends a month,” riding with her current trainer, Cayley Wilson, at his facility in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada. “Cayley and his wife, Katie, are really nice. I’ll go up and stay overnight and hang out for the weekend. They’re so kind. They are the nicest people. Katie’s so helpful and supportive, and Cayley is so positive – always with a smile,” she said.
In 1951, the founder of Marriott International, J. Willard Marriott Sr., discovered a beautiful piece of the Blue Ridge foothills that reminded him of his boyhood days on the family farm in Utah. After buying the property, he meticulously began to restore the primary historic buildings, their surrounding grounds and continued to purchase contiguous parcels of land including Fiery Run Ranch, creating the 4200+/- acre Marriott Ranch. Over the following years, J. Willard would bring the farm always known as "Fairfield" back to life with a modest herd of registered Hereford cattle, a large group of black-faced sheep and through the breeding of quarter horses. J. Willard, an avid horseback rider and outdoorsman, would spend as much time as he could at his Fauquier County property and wrote in his diary, "A beautiful place, hard to leave..."

Location, Qualifying Points for 2016 Zoetis VRH and AQHA CMS World Championships
AQHA announces the location of the 2016 Zoetis AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse and AQHA Cowboy Mounted Shooting World Championships in spring 2017 with the inaugural Zoetis AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge Finals. The Zoetis VRH and AQHA CMS world shows are tentatively scheduled for March 22-26, 2017.

This spring, the American Quarter Horse Association solicited hostsite bids for the 2016 Zoetis AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse and AQHA Cowboy Mounted Shooting World Championships to be held in spring 2017. The first Zoetis VRH World was held in 2008 in Denver, during the National Western Stock Show, then relocated in 2011 to Houston,
during the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. After reviewing the bids and exhibitor survey results, along with countless hours of discussion and evaluation, the AQHA Executive Committee decided to keep the 2016 Zoetis VRH and AQHA CMS world shows in Houston, in conjunction with the Houston Livestock Show

& Rodeo. The shows are tentatively scheduled for March 23-26, 2017. “To make the best decision for our members, we need adequate time to evaluate our exhibitors’ wants and needs,” said Pete Kyle, AQHA chief show officer. “Several members suggested in the survey that they would like to see changes made to the show. To ensure we’re making the most well-informed decisions, we are conducting more research and will solicit host-site bids for the 2017 Zoetis VRH and AQHA CMS world shows later in the year.” “We are grateful for the wonderful bids submitted by facilities all over the country, and we look forward to ensuring we make the best decision possible for the show and our exhibitors in the future,” Kyle continued. The Executive Committee also reviewed and approved the points required to qualify for the Zoetis VRH and AQHA CMS world shows. For more information on qualifying for the AQHA CMS World, contact the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association. The qualifying period began January 1, 2016, and ends December 31, 2016. For information on the Zoetis VRH and AQHA CMS world shows, visit www.aqha.com/ versatility. AQHA will also hold the first Zoetis AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge Finals in conjunction with the 2016 Zoetis VRH and AQHA CMS world shows. Ranching Heritage Challenges highlight the versatility, soundness and willing attitude of American Quarter Horses that are bred by AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders. To be eligible to compete in the challenges, horses must have been bred by a Ranching Heritage Breeder, plus all payments must be complete. In 2016, there is more than $90,000 in prize money offered during the six qualifying challenges and finals. To qualify for the finals, a horse must simply compete at any one of the 2016 Challenges. Horses that competed at the 2016 Challenge in January at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo are already qualified for the Ranching Heritage Challenge Finals. For more information on the Challenges, visit www.aqha.com/ ranching.
Pillars of Excellence We call these five areas our “Pillars of Excellence”:
AQHA Executive Vice President Craig Huffhines shares some highlights on AQHA’s strategic operating plan. All high-quality companies and organizations operate with a purpose, and we at AQHA are committed to being not just a good organization, but an excellent one.
In May, your staff at the American Quarter Horse Association worked in departmental teams to develop an action plan for 2016-17. These departmental action plans revolve around the 2020 AQHA Strategic Vision, a very comprehensive and high-level strategic plan that was developed in 2012. With the specific business objectives we have developed and prioritized, we are focused on becoming a better, more high-functioning and more successful membership organization. AQHA staff met May 23-25 to further fine tune these business objectives, establishing timelines for completion, ranking them in priority and assigning a manager or management team responsible for delivering the objectives. The Association is so vast and deep that our three-day planning sessions covered a multitude of important topics and priorities. While it was difficult to narrow them down, the AQHA senior leadership team and our consultant, Jodi Sullivan, who brings years of business and equine industry experience to the table, created a concise list of priorities that we’re using as a navigation tool. In developing our business plans, the AQHA leadership team came up with five key areas to make AQHA the service and membership organization that will best advance the equine industry and ensure superior service for our members and owners.
Animal welfare Customer satisfaction Communication Association culture Education and development Within these five pillars, here are a few key areas I want you to be aware of that we'll be focusing on this year: Youth Development and Strategic Planning – to have an Association in the future, we need to nurture the love of American Quarter Horses in our youth and provide programs for them that will help them discover career path interests that will support our great industry. Technology enhancements – continue website improvements and create additional opportunities for enhancements in technology that will allow us to expand AQHA business and services and improve customer service in the future. Increased opportunities with our alliance partners – we know there are a lot of people riding American Quarter Horses in non-AQHA events; what can we do to get them to become AQHA members? Reinvigorate affiliate programs – reach our grassroots member around the world by listening to the needs of the states, provinces and international affiliates. I want you all to be aware that these are not the only key areas that we are focusing on as an Association. This is just the beginning. We will keep you updated on additional key areas we are focusing on throughout the year. All high-quality companies and organizations operate with a purpose, and we at AQHA are committed to being not just a good organization, but an excellent one. The Dalai Lama once said, “In order to carry a positive action, we must develop here a positive vision.” Our AQHA vision is most certainly taking form. Thank you for trusting me and your dedicated AQHA leadership team to steer our great Association into a bright future. As always, we will keep you updated on this important journey. 19-year-old thoroughbred honored for being a “Master Equine Educator” while helping veterinary students learn. Jun 06, 2016 By dvm360.com staff DVM360 MAGAZINE
This spring the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine (UC Davis) not only conferred DVM degrees on more than 100 veterinary students, but they also awarded an honorary degree to a special equine patient, a 19-year-old thoroughbred named Teddy, according to a university release. “Dr. Teddy” helped students learn equine health through more than two dozen appointments ranging from the routine, like vaccinations and deworming, to the more complex, such as stem cell treatments and a neurological disorder, over a yearlong stay at the university’s teaching hospital.

“Signing up for your first patient is quite a nerve-racking experience as you try to figure out how to go through the motions of being a fourthyear student and integrating all of the medicine you have learned up to that point,” says 2016 DVM graduate Carin Stevens in the release. “Teddy was the perfect patient.” Teddy consistently led students through various lessons in equine medicine including lameness evaluation, medication administration, behavioral and postural assessment, grooming, hand walking and much more, the release states. He received recognition for his comfort and cheerfulness soon after his yearlong stay ended, becoming the first equine to “graduate” from UC Davis. “Teddy provided an exceptional educational experience for staff, students, residents and faculty from many hospital services,” says Larry Galuppo, DVM, DACVS, chief of the Equine Surgery and Lameness Service at the university. “His care truly touched so many.”
West Yorkshire, England – June 12, 2016 – Two athletes traveled across the Atlantic this weekend to represent the United States at prestigious Bramham International Horse Trials. Competing in the Event Rider Masters CIC***, Clark Montgomery and Loughan Glen kicked things off with the top dressage score of 36.5 penalties to be the leaders after the first phase. They had one rail in the show jumping phase, but were double clear cross country to finish on just 40.5 penalties and earn the second place honors.

Double Clear for Lucy Davis in St. Gallen
St. Gallen, Switzerland – June 5, 2016 – Lucy Davis (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Old Oak Farm’s Barron rode to a double-clear finish in the Longines Grand Prix der Schweiz at CSIO5* St. Gallen on Sunday, June 5. Davis and the 2004 Belgian Warmblood gelding produced faultless efforts throughout the tworound show jumping competition tripping the timers in 47.53 seconds, just 3/10ths of a second behind HansDieter Dreher and Cool and Easy in 47.29 seconds to take second place honors. Davis’ second place finish on Sunday demonstrated her consistency on the international stage as she continues her quest to be apart of the U.S. Olympic Show Jumping Team at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The 23-year-old show jumper is just coming off of an eighth place finish with Barron in the Grand Prix Longines – Ville de La Baule at CSIO5* La Baule as well as helping Team USA secure two second place finishes in the La Baule and St. Gallen Nations Cups along with teammates Margie Engle, Lauren Hough and Todd Minikus.
U.S. Athletes Earn Top Ten Honors at Bramham Jenny Caras had the opportunity to travel to Bramham and compete in the Bishop Burton College CCI3*** U25 event as part of the Karen Stives European Developing Tour, made possible through the 2016 Karen Stives Endowment Fund for High Performance Eventing Grant. “I’m just in awe of the generosity
that everybody has shown me and the faith that they’re putting in me by awarding me this money,” said Caras after receiving the grant. “It’s kind of a dream come true that I have people believe in me enough to put their faith behind me. I think this opportunity will make a world of a difference for my career.”
Caras and Fernhill Fortitiude were ranked sixth after the dressage phase on a score of 48.9 penalties. They added then added 7.6 penalties to their score for exceeding the cross country time and had 12 faults during stadium jumping, but their total penalties of 68.5 was good enough to secure ninth place for their first U25 competition. Montgomery will now be looking ahead to be a part of the team for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, while, Caras continues to climb the ranks and hopes to one day represent the United States as part of a senior team.

11,500 Horses, Donkeys, and Mules to Receive Help - Brooke USA Launches “Buy a Donkey a Drink” Campaign to Ease Suffering LEXINGTON, Ky. - June 1, 2016 - In drought-prone developing countries, survival is difficult enough without the added burden of lifethreatening heat stress and exhaustion. That’s true for humans and also for the equine animals who labor alongside them in poverty-ravaged areas to help them earn a livelihood. In Ethiopia, which is plagued by both drought and extreme poverty, working equines are a lifeline for their owners. They are crucial to carrying out backbreaking household chores, plowing fields, taking goods to market, earning extra money so families can pay school fees for their children, and to purchase food, clothing, and medicine. The animals haul construction materials, carry food and water to other livestock, transport relief supplies during natural disasters, and much, much more, all of which contribute to the health and financial stability of individuals, families, and communities. Unfortunately these equines are suffering from a myriad of problems that are exacerbated by chronic dehydration. Brooke USA, the American fundraising arm of the Brooke, the world’s

largest international equine welfare charity, is about to change the future for these animals, thereby helping the families who need them. “When an equine in the developing world can’t work due to injury, illness, or death, it can have a devastating impact on the families who rely on it,” observed David Jones, DVM, Chairman of Brooke USA. Dr. Jones has seen first-hand the wide-scale suffering of these working equines, and he has also seen the dramatic difference that can occur with regular access to water. He continued, “The single, most crucial step that we can take to alleviate the suffering of the animals in this part of Ethiopia and to ensure a livelihood for their poor owners is to provide access to water.”
Soon 11,500 of these very important animals will have lifetime access to the water they so desperately need, thanks to a new project being funded this summer by Brooke USA donors. Their “Buy a Donkey a Drink” campaign will raise support to construct five permanent water troughs in the Shala Woreda (district) of Ethiopia. These 50-foot-long concrete troughs will be located in very busy market areas where thousands of animals regularly gather. The troughs will allow as many as 340 horses, donkeys, and mules to quench their thirst with each filling, and will allow other livestock such as cattle and camels to receive life-saving water as well. This project also includes training and facilitating “water committees” among the animal owners in the target area who will be responsible for the day-to-day operation and management of the water supply service. They have an important role in ensuring that the equines are properly benefitting from the water troughs. The project will also train the committee members on equine welfare so that they can disseminate information and educate other equine owners and users coming to the water troughs on equine welfare issues. “As much as the animals will benefit from regular access to water, it is their owners who will be the ultimate beneficiaries because their working partners will be healthier, happier, and better able to continue their important jobs,” concluded Dr. Jones. The fundraising goal is $98,000 over the next three months, which will allow construction of the water troughs to begin at once and be completed in phases by the end of the year. For more information on this campaign, go to www.BuyaDonkeyaDrink. org or emailInfo@BrookeUSA.org. For more information on Brooke USA, go to www.BrookeUSA.org. JULY 2016
U.S. Forest Service Names New Director To Oversee National Fire and Aviation Management Program
WASHINGTON, JUNE 17, 2016 - Shawna Legarza, who has earned more than 25 years of wildland fire management experience, has been tapped to serve as the National Director of Fire and Aviation Management for the U.S. Forest Service, Chief Tom Tidwell announced today. Legarza, who serves as the Regional Director of Fire and Aviation in the Pacific Southwest Region, California, will take on the critical leadership role to help create resilient landscapes, fire adapted communities, while putting safety and lives first in responding to wildland fire. The Forest Service has managed wildland fire for more than 100 years. While fire is a natural process necessary for the maintenance of many ecosystems, in the past two decades, extreme wildfire behavior has escalated, accompanied by significant increases in risk to responders, citizens, homes and businesses, as well as suppression
costs and threats to communities and ecosystems. “I have great confidence in the experience and professionalism Shawna brings into this vital role at the U.S. Forest Service” said Chief Tidwell. “Shawna’s leadership within the wildland fire community and the relationships she developed throughout her career make her the best fit for the job”. Currently, Legarza serves as Regional Fire and Aviation Director of the Pacific Southwest Region headquartered in Vallejo, Calif., a Region that experiences one of the most active and severe wildland fire seasons in the country. Among many of her accomplishments, she led regional efforts to foster a respectful, discrimination-free work environment for all employees who serve in the fire program. In her new role, Legarza will oversee the full suite of Forest Service fire and aviation management,
wildland fire operations and improving landscape conditions through hazardous fuel reduction, and will advance efforts to create a culture of safety and improved decisionmaking for wildland fire suppression. Legarza said, “I am excited for this new opportunity and look forward to the challenges the Forest Service and fire management face today in light of the growing length and severity of our fire seasons. I am honored to represent the U.S. Forest Service and lead the best wildland firefighting organization in the world. Thank you to those folks that have contributed to my career and educational experiences, I am very thankful.” Legarza launched her federal career with the Bureau of Land Management in 1989 as an engine crew member in Elko, NV. A short time later, she joined the Forest Service and worked as a hotshot crew member in Carson City, NV, and a Hotshot Superintendent in Durango, CO.

For five decades, Frank Chapot played an instrumental role on the USA Jumping team, flying the flag for the USA at the top level of the sport, inspiring generations of riders and coaching multiple winning teams. A winner of the renowned Maclay Championship at junior level in 1947, Frank Chapot went on to have a remarkable career as a professional, joining the United States Equestrian Team (USET) in 1956, a year after graduating from Frank Chapot the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton Business School. He was the youngest member of the USA Olympic Jumping Team when he made his Olympic debut in 1956 with the one-eyed horse Belair, which his mother had bought for just $3,500. The Olympic equestrian events were held in Stockholm (SWE) that year because of quarantine issues in Melbourne. He served in the Air Force for two years between the Korean and Vietnam wars, but still found the time to continue riding and competing. Frank Chapot competed in five more Olympic Games, winning team silver in Rome 1960 and again in Munich 1972. He also claimed individual bronze in the 1974 World Championships. He participated on a record 46 winning FEI Nations Cup teams, three Pan American Games teams, and claimed victories in the President’s Cup, the Grand Prix of New York, and London’s King George V Gold Cup among many others. After hanging up his competition boots, Frank Chapot succeeded Bertalan (Bert) de Némethy as the USA chef d’equipe, a role he held for 24 years until his retirement in 2005. Under his leadership, the USA Jumping team won nine Olympic medals and nine Pan American Games medals, including the first-ever team gold at Los Angeles 1984, gold again 20 years later at Athens

Frank Chapot was also known for breeding and training the famous Gem Twist, the charismatic grey that won team and individual silver with Greg Best at the Seoul Olympics in 1988, a hugely poignant moment for Frank. Gem Twist was named Best Horse at the 1990 FEI World Equestrian Games™ in Stockholm after the four-way change-horse final. Frank Chapot married his two-time Olympic team mate, the former Mary Mairs, in 1965. They had ridden together on the 1964 Olympic team in Tokyo, where the squad was sixth and Chapot was the highest-placed American, finishing seventh on San Lucas. The couple also rode together on the Olympic team in 1968 in Mexico City. Their two daughters, Wendy and Laura, both became successful equestrians, with Laura competing at the top of the sport, including winning team bronze at the 2007 Pan American Games. Frank Chapot was a founding member of the Show Jumping Hall of Fame Board of Directors and served on the Board of Directors of the American Grandprix Association and a number of horse shows. He was honoured for his long list of achievements in 1994 when he was inducted into the Show Jumping Hall of Fame, two years after his wife Mary. Frank Chapot remained active in the sport until recent years, when his health declined. He was a renowned course designer and judge and was very much involved in the governance of the sport. In 2001 he received the United States Equestrian Federation’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the sport. “Frank was a legend in his own life time”, John Roche, FEI Director of Jumping said. “He was a horseman through and through, with an amazing eye for a horse. Apart from having an outstanding career as a rider, he was a very accomplished trainer. He was a passionate supporter of the Nations Cup competition and was on 46 winning Nations Cup teams. “For many years he played a very important role in establishing and managing the FEI World Cup Jumping series in North America. He was an accomplished course designer and a hugely respected FEI international Jumping judge. His passing marks the end of an era. He helped to shape equestrian sport in the United States and will be greatly missed by all those who were fortunate enough to have come in contact with him. Our deepest sympathies to his wife Mary and daughters Laura and Wendy.” “Frank Chapot was one of my best friends, one of international Jumping’s best friends, one of the United States’ best friends and certainly one of the best friends of the horse”, FEI 1st Vice-President John Madden said. “Frank knew more about friendship than most. He was fiercely loyal, honest and clear. He was a man of few words, a family man, tough as nails but full of compassion. These human qualities shaped show jumping in America and influenced it worldwide. Every US rider today has been influenced in a positive way by Frank. He made us all better. I will miss him. We will all miss him.” Frank Chapot is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary, daughters Laura Chapot and Wendy Nunn, an accountant who has been successful as an amateurowner jumper, his son-in-law Edward Nunn, and grandchildren, Frank, Mary and Cathleen. The FEI extends its sincere condolences to Frank Chapot’s family and many friends, to the United States Equestrian Federation and the global equestrian community.

WHAT IS A BLEEDER?
To most people a “bleeder” is a horse that has blood at the nostrils during or after training or competing.
ESSENTIALLY ALL HORSES ARE BLEEDERS! However, research has shown that if horses are ‘scoped (the pro- cess of placing a thin tube with a camera inside the windpipe) after working or racing, between 40-80% of horses will have some blood visible in the windpipe, but not at the nostrils. had bled unless you ‘scoped it. If you ‘scope any horse on three different occasions after a hard workout it will have blood in the windpipe on at least one occasion. If we look even deeper into the lung we know that most horses break blood vessels. HORSES DO NOT HAVE TO RUN HARD TO BLEED. Research in Japan showed that horses that only cantered at speeds of up to 20 mph (a very slow canter for a racehorse) most had damage to their lungs as a result of broken blood vessels. DAMAGE TO THE LUNG INCREASES WITH SPEED. The more times a horse runs, the more bleeding that can occur. Other factors can also increase how much damage is done to the lung, such as extremes of ground conditions (very hard and very deep) and 95% of all performance horses bleed to some degree during exercise. YOUR HORSE AGAINST A SILENT INJURY FLAIR Strips are proven to be a drug-free way to make breathing easier, reduce lung bleeding (EIPH), reduce fatigue & shorten recovery time.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
DAMAGE TO THE LUNG INCREASES THROUGHOUT A HORSES CAREER Each time a horse does more than a slow work some blood vessels of the lung. With repeated work and racing, the damage does not stay in one place but accumulates, affecting more and more of the lung. Thus, the severity and frequency of bleeding observed by ‘scoping after exercise almost always increases.

WHAT DOES BLEEDING DO TO THE LUNG? The blood vessels that break in the lung are almost always the blood vessels of the pulmonary circulation. When the vessels are ruptured, they may become blocked or not function normally. If they are repaired healthy lung tissue. Damaged lung tissue, even if it is repaired, does not function as well and the horse’s lung capacity and lung function adverse effect on performance. WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS FOR TREATING BLEEDERS? proven ways to reduce bleeding: Furosemide (Salix, formerly Lasix) and FLAIR Nasal Strips. Noth- ing stops bleeding, including Furosemide. Both FLAIR Strips and Furosemide have been shown to reduce bleeding by about 55% at maximum exertion. Good nutrition and environment management are also essential to keeping horses’ lungs healthy. IS THERE A BENEFIT TO USING FLAIR NASAL STRIPS DURING TRAINING IF THEY WILL NOT BE USED DURING A RACE?
YES. Damage caused by bleeding increased over time the more intensely a horse works. The more damage done to the lung the greater its function is re- duced, adversely affecting performance. Even if you don’t compete with FLAIR Nasal Strips, it makes sense to use them in training to limit how much damage occurs to the lungs so that they are in the best condition possible when it matters ... in the race. One of the first things to do when researching horse property is to know the limitations of the zoning in that city or county. The following is a list of general zoning guidelines for Phoenix and the surrounding areas. Please note that regulations change. Do your due diligence and contact zoning officials for current and definitive regulations.

No limit to the number of personally owned horses unless deed restricted. Public riding stables or academies require special use permits and minimum of 10 acres. Commercial stables cannot be used for home occupation on residential property. Manure is to be removed at least twice each week and the property must remain sanitary
Maricopa County - www.maricopa.gov/planning
No limit to the number of personally-owned horses unless deed restricted. Up to 5 horses not owned by the owner or occupant may be boarded on a Rural-zoned lot. In Rural zoned lots, non-commercial public activities (no admission fee) may be conducted so long as no more than 24 persons are involved, thus allowing for riding lessons.
No limit to the number of personally-owned horses allowed unless deed restricted. A Ranch permit is needed if you plan to board or train and have up to 8 guests on property at one time. Ranch permits require min 5 acres. City Council approval is required. A Commercial Stable in Scottsdale requires a minimum of 10 acres and a Special Use Permit. Minimum of 2 acre lot to have horses unless deed restricted. 5 horses per acre up to 5 acres, then 2 horses per acre for each acre thereafter unless deed restricted. Ranch use allows boarding and training without a permit unless property is deed restricted.
Other important things to remember:
Keep all structures within setbacks Get permits on all improvements to save future expenses If you aren’t sure if you need a permit, call your local municipality Research acquiring AG Exempt status to allow for more flexibility in land use

Sarcoid Tumors Linked to Genetic Susceptibility in Horses
A new study led by scientists at the Baker Institute for Animal Health at Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine shows genetic differences in immune function partly account for why some horses get sarcoid tumors while others do not. A horse’s genetic makeup influences whether or not they develop sarcoid skin tumors, according to a new study by an international research group led by scientists at the Baker Institute for Animal Health at Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Sarcoid skin tumors are the most common form of cancer in horses, the college noted, but little is known about why the papillomavirus behind them strikes some horses and not others…Until now. The study mirrors findings in humans, as some people have a genetic susceptibility to human papillomavirus, which can cause cervical and other cancers.
“Many therapies have been proposed as the ‘best’ treatment for sarcoids,” said Doug Antczak, VMD, Ph.D., the Dorothy Havemeyer McConville Professor of Equine Medicine, who led the study. In some horses, tumors develop as small bumps under the skin or as scaly lesions that easily can be removed by a veterinarian, but in other horses the problem becomes much more serious. Surgery, cryotherapy, laser treatment, injecting the tumors with drugs to kill the cells, radiation treatment and immunotherapy have all been shown to cure these recalcitrant tumors, “but some tumors tend to recur no matter what treatment is used, and there is no universal consensus on a uniformly successful therapy,” Dr. Antczak said. It’s been thought for years that bovine papillomavirus (BPV) is the most likely culprit behind sarcoid tumors, according to Antczak. Recent work from Europe suggests variants of the BPV have become adapted to horses and are probably the cause of most sarcoids. Antczak’s team applied a genomewide association study to compare the genetic makeup of horses with and
without sarcoid tumors at more than 50,000 sites in the equine genome. They studied 82 sarcoid-bearing horses from the United States and United Kingdom and 272 carefully matched controls that did not have sarcoids. They found regions on chromosomes 20 and 22 that tended to be different in horses diagnosed with sarcoids, evidence that a horse’s genes determine, in part, how susceptible it is to sarcoids, according to the researchers. “This is an example of more complicated genetics — multigene susceptibility,” Antczak said. “More than one genetic region is associated with susceptibility to sarcoids, and they don’t completely determine whether or not a horse will develop the disease once it’s exposed to BPV.” This genetic link implicates the immune system in sarcoid susceptibility, according to the researchers. The region of chromosome 20 associated with sarcoid development is within a portion of the genome responsible for immune function called the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) class II region. The MHC type
Piles of grass clippings are no treat for your horse Are you tempted to cut your grass, then rake it into soft, fragrant, tasty piles of clippings for your horse to nibble? According to equine nutrition expert Dr. Juliet Getty this should be the last thing you encourage your horse to eat. It has to do with that extra step: raking. Grass clippings that stay on the pasture after mowing, where they can dry in small amounts, are generally not a problem. But never gather them into piles to feed them
to your horse. Here’s why: · Clippings are too easy to over-consume, and eating large amounts at one time can lead to excess fermentation in the hind gut, potentially causing colic and laminitis. · Piles of clippings can rapidly invite mold to form (especially prevalent in hot, humid environments), which can lead to colic.
· Because there is no air inside a dense pile, botulism can develop, which turns this “treat” absolutely deadly. Three really good reasons those pretty piles are no kind of treat for your horse! Juliet M. Getty, Ph.D. is an independent equine nutritionist with a wide U.S. and international following. Her research-based approach optimizes equine health by aligning physiology and instincts with correct

associated with sarcoid susceptibility is very rare among Standardbred horses, a fact that may explain why sarcoid is diagnosed so rarely in this breed, the researchers noted. This complex mix of virus, host genes and tumor development may have relevance to a related human condition, according to the researchers. Tumors caused by human papillomaviruses account for more than 5 percent of cancer cases worldwide. In women with cervical cancer, an association with the MHC class II region has also been shown. “That should make a light bulb go off,” Antczak said. “It suggests there’s a common mechanism in both species for susceptibility to tumor progression that may involve subversion of the host immune response. By studying this phenomenon in horses you can learn about human cancer and vice versa.” The study, funded with a grant from the Morris Animal Foundation, was published in the International Journal of Cancer. In addition to Cornell, researchers came from the University of Glasgow, Iowa State University and the University of Florida.

TODD BERGEN, WINS NRCHA DERBY OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP
Leading National Reined Cow Horse Association professional Todd Bergen, Eagle Point, Oregon, added another Premier Event title to his impressive resume when he guided Some Kinda Merada (Cats Merada x Ima Fern Believer x Peptoboonsmal) to the NRCHA Derby Open Championship. Bergen and the 2011 mare, owned by Cable Creek Ranch, Aurora, Oregon, earned $30,767 when they scored a 670.5 (218 herd/225.5 rein/227 cow).
How did Bergen feel about another big win? “It never gets old,” he said. “This event has gotten so tough and so deep. Everybody’s always rooting for each other. We could run this whole thing again tomorrow and it could change around completely. Any time you come out on top, it’s a thrill. I don’t care how many times you show or compete, it’s always gratifying.” Bergen, a NRCHA 2 Million Dollar Rider, had piloted Some Kinda Merada to just over $24,000 in reined cow horse earnings since he bought her for Mike and Cindy Warn’s Cable Creek Ranch as a 3-year-old. While Bergen never doubted the mare’s abilities, a major win had eluded her until her performance in Paso Robles. “I have to thank Justin Wright and Eric Freitas for selling me this mare, and I’m sorry it took me so long for me to show everybody what she could be,” Bergen said, “I’ve always believed in her. This has been a great mare for a long time, and I just have never got it all put together. I was starting to scratch my head and wonder why. I told myself to trust her, and just do it, so that’s what I did, and it worked,” Bergen said. Some Kinda Merada was in a three-way tie for first place after the herd and rein work finals. She needed a big score down the fence to move into the lead, and when the judges marked the run a 227, the resulting 670.5 composite score proved untouchable. The last time Bergen won the NRCHA Derby Open Championship, it was in 2010, and he was riding another horse owned by Cable Creek Ranch: Smart Luck (Very Smart Remedy x Gunna Be Lucky x Gunna Smoke), a 2006 stallion who has gone on to be a brilliant performer with more than $245,000 in reined cow horse and reining money on his record. “That goes to show you how
consistent and gives me his heart,” Lawrence said. Besides the two paychecks, Lawrence took home a Gist buckle and a gift certificate from Platinum Performance. The Intermediate Open Reserve Champion was Metallic Masterpiece (Metallic Cat x Kings Masterpiece x Peppy San Badger), shown by Kyle Trahern, Walsh, Colorado, for owner Silver Spur Operating Co. LLC. They scored a 651.5 (214.5 herd/221 rein/216 cow), earning $4,851.
Todd Bergen and Some Kinda Merada great a customer Cindy [Warn] is. She supplies me with good horses and trusts my program and trusts my judgment about what to do with these horses and where to go with them. I can’t thank her enough. This mare just got an embryo flushed out of her about a month ago to Smart Luck, so hopefully, in a few years, we’ll be riding that baby,” Bergen said. The Derby Open Championship prize package included a Scottsdale Western World and Silver Spurs Equine saddle sponsored by Eric Freitas and Korie Baker; a Gist buckle; boots from Rios of Mercedes, and gift certificates from San Juan Ranch/Santa Cruz Animal Health and Platinum Performance. The Derby Open Reserve Champion was Smooth Bellingrath (Smooth As A Cat x Very Special Peppy x Peppy San Badger), shown by Nevada professional Nick Dowers for Triple D Ranches. Dowers and the 2011 stallion had the high score in the preliminary composite, and in the finals, they had the high rein work score on their way to an overall 664.5 (217 herd/226.5 rein/221 cow). They took home $23,283, as well as a pair of boots from Rios of Mercedes and gift certificates from Farnam and Platinum Performance.
Intermediate Open Champion
Dualin Stargun (Dual Rey x Amanda Stargun x Playgun) and Justin Lawrence, Alzada, Montana, are two-for-two at National Reined Cow Horse Association Premier Events in 2016. At the NRCHA Stallion Stakes in Las Vegas, Nevada,
in April, the pair won the Intermediate Open Championship and qualified for the Open finals. They did the same thing in Paso Robles, scoring a 661.5 composite (220 herd/218 rein/223.5 fence) to win the Intermediate Open title and finish fifth in the Open. “I was excited at the Stakes, and probably more excited now, because you wonder if it was a one shot deal. He was better this whole trip. Better in the prelims, better in the finals. It was such a tough finals, with great horses and great riders. I’m pretty stoked!” Lawrence said. The Intermediate Open Championship paid $6,583, and Lawrence collected another $11,641 for their top 5 Derby Open finish. He and his wife, Kelcie, own the 2011 stallion with another couple, John and Heather Kennedy, as the Dualin Stargun Partners. “They [the Kennedys] make everything possible. I don’t know if we’d venture that far on our own paycheck, and they’re always there and always supportive, and it makes it easier to go to the shows,” Lawrence said. The little gray stallion may barely make 14 hands in height, but Lawrence says he possesses the grit and heart of a horse three times his size – and proved it again in Paso Robles. Lawrence was most proud of their fence work in the preliminaries and in the finals. “In the prelims cow work, we were a 224.5. The cow – I’ll be the first to say wasn’t the fastest cow — but it was 100 pounds bigger than he was, and he pushed it around. Today in the finals, the cow was faster, and he stepped up and handled it. I’ve waited a while to have one like this that’s so

Limited Open Champion
The 2016 NRCHA Derby was the first time for Ryan Thomas, King Hill, Idaho, to make the finals at a National Reined Cow Horse Association Premier Event. He marked the occasion by winning the Limited Open Championship and finishing 8th in the Intermediate Open aboard Magicat (Metallic Cat x Magical Lena x Little Lenas Legend). Thomas and the 2011 mare worked their way to a 646.5 composite in the finals (211 herd/215.5 rein/220 cow), winning the Limited Open Championship by a 26.5 point margin. Their combined paychecks totaled $6,930. Thomas also took home a Gist buckle and a gift certificate from Platinum Performance. “I’m just happy I did it right,” Thomas said. “It’s only my second time to show her, and I didn’t get her shown very well the first time [at the NRCHA Stallion Stakes in Las Vegas]. I’m grateful to be able to show her, especially at two major events.” For the past four-and-a-half years, Thomas has worked as an assistant trainer to NRCHA Hall of Fame Professional and Million Dollar Rider Anne Reynolds, King Hill, Idaho. Magicat was raised and trained at Reynolds’ Why Worry Ranch. She is owned by Reynolds’ mother, Joyce Pearson, as part of the motherand-daughter team’s joint breeding program. “There are a lot of real good horse trainers who have trained on her, and I just got to capitalize on that this week,” Thomas said. “Nick Dowers started her and Nic Brunelli [Reynolds’ former assistant] rode her ,and Annie rode her, and Gusti [Buerger, another former assistant to Reynolds] rode her a little bit.
