PRCA Commissioner Karl Stressman announces retirement
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After nearly nine years at the helm of the PRCA, Commissioner Karl Stressman has announced that he will be retiring, effective Dec. 31, 2017. Commissioner Stressman has stewarded meteoric growth of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association since 2008. Under his leadership, the organization signed a record $175 million contract that
keeps the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas through the year 2024. Stressman also played a major role in negotiating a television broadcast agreement with CBS Sports Network through 2019; successfully protecting the organization’s rights to provide equal opportunity to all association members, and not just a select few athletes; and accepting fiduciary responsibility for generating

substantial cash reserves for the organization, while returning nearly 90 percent of all income generated to benefit members and membership services. “I sat down in the Commissioner’s chair for the first time in September 2008, and I made a promise to myself that I would give my very best efforts each and every day to improve the sport of Professional Rodeo,” Stressman said. “I made myself another promise that I would stay at the PRCA as long as I enjoyed the job. Well, it’s time to say goodbye! I will be retiring at the end of 2017, after completing my 10th Wrangler National Finals Rodeo as Commissioner of the PRCA.” Even as he plans his departure, Stressman has put into place a future path that will allow for the PRCA’s top rodeos to gain even more prominence, and for the PRCA membership to profit as the organization enters into new digital content opportunities. Commissioner Stressman’s iconic leadership tenure stands as a landmark for professional rodeo and the entire western industry. “It has been an amazing run, but certainly not without a few battle scars,” he said. “It has been my privilege to have had the opportunity to serve the members, our committees, our great sponsors and the best fans in the sporting world. I thank you all for the opportunity! Long Live Cowboys!”

Mr. Williams also currently serves as a trustee of the Harness Racing Museum and the Hanover Foundation for Excellence in Education. Additionally, he is a member of the U.S. Harness Writers Association. Mr. Williams previously served on the AHC’s Board from 2001-2008 and as chairman of that board 2009-2012. “Working with the trustees and staff of the AHC adds energy to the other work I do in the horse industry,” said Williams. “I’m very glad to be back on the board.” Mr. Iuliano was named executive vice president and executive director of The Jockey Club in 2010, after more than eight years as the organization’s Vice President of Registration Services. He oversees all matters concerning The American Stud Book and represents The Jockey Club as it interacts with national and international industry organizations and committee. “Matt Iuliano has played an active role with the AHC while serving on our Racing Advisory Committee, and we are looking forward to his increased involvement as a board member and treasurer,” Broadway said. Prior to joining The Jockey Club in 2011, Iuliano served in several executive capacities at Churchill Downs Incorporated. He also spent seven years as the Director and Operations Manager of Lasma East, a prominent Arabian horse farm that was located in LaGrange, KY. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science and a Master’s degree in Equine Physiology and Biophysics from Colorado State University before earning an MBA and a law degree from the University of Louisville.

CD Survivor Memorial Bridle Champions Ken Wold & Brother Jackson
Bridle Spectaculars at NRCHA Premier Events deliver some of the best cow horse action a reined cow hose fan will ever see. The bridle horses are the veterans of the NRCHA, with all the ingredients: talent, training and years of experience. The CD Survivor Memorial Bridle Spectacular, named in honor of the late, great stallion owned by NRCHA sponsor Holy Cow Performance Horses, is a $50,000-added contest that never fails to thrill spectators, year after year. Sixteen elite bridle horses and their riders took to the arena Friday night, representing some of the reined cow horse industry’s finest equine athletes and most talented trainers. As it often does in NRCHA competition, the Championship came down to the final event, the fence work, where a phenomenal 227 score elevated Brother Jackson (Peptoboonsmal x Shes Icing Onthe Cat x High Brow Cat), shown by NRCHA Hall of Fame horseman Ken Wold, of Wilton, California, to the win. Brother
Jackson scored a total 661.5 (220 herd/214.5 rein/227 cow), earning $23,400. “I’ve been doing the fence work ever since I was 20 years old, and I’m 70 now, and always dreamed of having that run – and I had it. That’s all I can say. It was really special,” Wold said. “There are a lot of great horses here, and great riders. This is as tough as it gets, in my opinion. I feel very blessed, and I thank the Lord for this.”
Brother Jackson is owned by Daniel Perez, Westley, California, a longtime friend and customer of Wold’s. Perez became smitten with Brother Jackson when he saw him compete at the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity in 2012. At that time, the stallion was trained and shown by NRCHA Million Dollar Rider Zane Davis. When Perez had an opportunity to buy the stallion in December 2014, he didn’t hesitate. “It’s a privilege to have this kind

of horse, and to watch Ken show him. It’s fun. I knew he was capable of having a good run. We’ve been waiting for it to come out in him, and it did tonight,” Perez said. The support from Holy Cow Performance Horses, sponsor of the $50,000-added bridle class each year at the NRCHA Derby, was particularly appreciated by Wold. “It enables these great bridle horses to show what they are. To see them work that well in the cutting and the reining and the fence work is really phenomenal, and without the support from Holy Cow, we would never be able to come up to this level,” Wold said. “I also thank Dan Perez, who believed in this horse from day one. We’ve had some ups and downs, but you couldn’t ask for a better customer. My wife, Ramona, has been behind me when I’m marking 208’s, too, so I’m glad that we all got to have a good night. it’s special.”

The Arizona Fall Championship Has Got Things Covered The Arizona Fall Championship rolls into WestWorld in Scottsdale, AZ a little earlier on the show calendar for 2017 with dates of September 20 through 24. The show takes full advantage of the fantastic expansion of WestWorld facilities by holding most classes indoors or under cover. The All Around and rail classes will be held in the North Hall’s two climate controlled arenas. Spacious, bright, and outfitted with excellent footing, these arenas were a big hit with exhibitors at Sun Circuit in March.
Cow horse, Roping, Reining and Ranch Riding will show next door in the Equidome, with its indoor warmup paddock and ample spectator seating. The AzFC also offers its full slate of VRH classes under the shade of covered arena 5A. On Friday, that arena becomes a practice pen for cattle fence work. The 2016 AzFall Championship saw an explosion of entries over the prior year. Organizers took that into account designing this year’s schedule so that great show days do not turn into long nights. The schedule also benefits Youth exhibitors with those busy school schedules. All Youth classes will be held Friday through Sunday.
The AzFC is known as “The Show For Everyone”. The show has been committed to welcoming all levels of exhibitor, and creating an environment that is simultaneously first-class, fun, and exhibitor friendly. No matter your level of expertise, there is a level in which to show, and great rewards for winning. Scottsdale Performance Saddles sponsored by Scottsdale Western World will be given to the Non Pro High Point champs in Level 1, Level 2 and in Level 3. Classes that will be counted for these awards include the appropriate level or age division of showmanship, horsemanship, western pleasure, and halter or performance halter. The coveted Championship bronze horse trophies will be awarded once again in all AQHA classes that show to 6 judges. Logo outerwear will be awarded to 2nd through 5th places in each Circuit. The enthusiasm for Versatility Ranch Horse classes at the Fall Championship has steadily grown, as have the offerings. AzQHA CEO and show producer Doug Huls is adamant about promoting VRH on an equal footing with the traditional roster of AQHA show classes as a way to expand the overall interest in the AQHA show experience. Accordingly, 24

Lil Bay Hawk & Justin Wright Win 2017 NRCHA Derby Open Championship
Limited Open Champion
A thrilling day of reined cow horse action on Saturday, June 17, wrapped up the main event at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Derby in Paso Robles, California, with the finals for Open and Non Pro competitors. Champions were crowned in three Open and three Non Pro Derby divisions. The NRCHA Derby is the biggest and richest event for 4- and 5-year-old reined cow horses, with the total payout in 2017 exceeding $300,000. Shown two-handed in a snaffle bit or a hackamore, horses are judged in three events: rein work, herd work and cow work. Derby Open Finals night was emotional for Justin Wright, of Santa Maria, California. He had three horses in the finals and won the Championship – his first NRCHA Premier Event Open title – with Stephen Silva’s Lil Bay Hawk (Catty Hawk x Gray Little Freckles x Playgun), scoring a phenomenal 672.5 composite (225 herd/220.5 rein/227 fence). Wright and Lil Bay Hawk were the composite leaders after two events, and were among the last few horses to go down the fence. Wright needed

Hollister, California, professional Brendon Clark piloted Metal Cat (Metallic Cat x Tipofthestar x Grays Starlight) to the Derby Limited Open Championship, scoring a 632.5 composite (215 herd/210.5 rein/207 fence). The win paid $5,836. “I won the Level 1 Limited Open here last year, and was Reserve in the Limited Open, so to come back this year and be able to win the Limited, is exciting. I worked really hard over the last few years trying to learn as much as I can, and I’m still learning something every day,” Clark, a former professional bull rider, said. He owns Metal Cat in partnership
a big score to overtake the leader, NRCHA Two Million Dollar Rider Todd Bergen, Eagle Point, Oregon, and Boonlight Roan Bar (Bet Hesa Cat x Cat Boonlight Jewels x High Brow Cat), who were in the lead with a 666.5 total. “I don’t remember most of it,” Wright admitted of the fence work. “He went in there, and it felt good, and it just all worked out. Every turn, it seemed like we just stayed in time, and it was incredible. It’s everything I’ve ever dreamed of – winning a major, and it’s just incredible.” The Championship paid $29,588 and came with prizes including a saddle from Jividen’s Customs, sponsored by McSpyder Ranch; a Gist buckle; boots from Rios of Mercedes; and product from Platinum Performance and Santa Cruz Animal Health. Wright had two other horses in the Open finals. He tied for 4th on Mark and Kelly Gowing’s homebred stallion, Step To The Light (CD Lights x Shinersdiamondjackie x Shining Spark, scoring a 663.5 (216.5 herd/224.5 rein/221 cow), earning $12,795. His other finalist, Light N Sassy (CD Lights x Dual Sass x Dual Pep), finished 11th with a 656 composite, earning $3,998 for owners Mark and Kimberly Rauch. Boonlight Roan Bar and Todd Bergen, the Reserve Champions, earned $22,391 for owner Tony Grover.
Intermediate Open Champion The Derby Intermediate Open Champion was Nee On Lights
JUSTIN WRIGHT (CD Lights x Shine Smartly x Shining Spark), shown by NRCHA Professional Shawn Hays, Nocona, Texas, for owner Yellow Creek Ranch. Nee On Lights, a 2012 stallion bred by Hays’ wife, and her father, Walter Greeman, scored a 655 composite (216 herd/218 rein/221 fence). The Intermediate Open Championship came with a $6,981 paycheck. Hays and Nee On Lights earned another $3,198 for finishing 12th in the Open. “I drew a good cow, and that little horse, he was on target in the fence work. He was a little tired because it’s been real hot today. The cows, in the prelims, the heat kind of tapped them out, but the cows didn’t weaken today. They stayed strong. We went down and made a good right turn, jumped out and made a good left turn and got circled up,” Hays said. He praised the honest nature of the horse he has known since he was foaled, out of the Hays family’s champion performing and producing mare, Shine Smartly. “He goes in and tries to give you the same run every time. He doesn’t try and cheat you. He’s just a really solid little show horse,” he said. Hays had two other horses in the finals. He earned combined paychecks of $3,317 in the Open and Intermediate Open on Hes The Katz Meow, owned by Dustin Deckard; and picked up $551 in the Intermediate Open aboard Playin Motown, owned by Moncrief and Lee.
Ken Wold with friends Quentin Kersh and Jonathan Fine, and praised the gelding’s steady temperament and cow sense. “He’s a horse that doesn’t need a lot of work. You don’t need to warm him up much. You just go in, and he does what you want. He’s a niceminded horse.”
Level 1 Limited Open Champion
The Wright Quarter Horses team had another reason to celebrate on Thursday, as Justin Wright’s assistant trainer, Daniel Sanchez, won the Level 1 Limited Open Championship riding Mi Smart Ichi Girl (Cat Ichi x A Smart Laker Girl x Laker Doc), owned by Mary Hobbs. The 2012 mare scored a 641.5 composite (211 herd/212 rein/218.5 fence), earning $2,123. “She’s a super gritty mare. She’s always been gritty, and a great fence horse. She’s not going to get outrun down the fence. If the cow has a little spunk to it, she’s going to be right there with it, and that’s what she did today. Everyone said it was scary, but we were just trying to get that cow caught,” Sanchez said. continued page 38

NRCHA Derby The 22 year old horseman has been an assistant trainer to top NRCHA Professionals, starting his career under Jake Gorrell, Hanford, California. Sanchez currently works for Justin Wright, a full-circle family tradition. “My dad worked for the Wrights for 20-plus years. Justin has known me since I was a baby. He’s pretty much like my big brother, been a role model my whole life. I’ve looked up to him showing horses, so it’s pretty great to be competing against him now and working for him. It’s pretty awesome,” Sanchez said.
He thanked Wright, Gorrell, his parents, and Mi Smart Ichi Girl’s owner, Mary Hobbs, for believing in him. “She stuck with me when I was 21 years old and sent this mare to me. I don’t know many people who would send a horse to a 21 year old, but she did, and it’s worked out great for the both of us,” he said. The Level 1 Limited Open Reserve Champion was another Justin Wright protege, Jared Jones, who rode Linda Tayne’s Gunna Smokum Alittle (Little Lotto Lena x Mia Gunna Smokum x Smokum Oak) to a 637 (214 herd/213 rein/210 cow), earning $1,592.
Derby Non Pro
A special bond between Hope Miller and her 5-year-old gelding, Dare To Sioux (A Shiner Named Sioux x Tari Darlin x Taris Catalyst) helps the pair consistently achieve fence work performances that any top professional trainer would envy. The non pro from Washington state piloted “Baby Sioux” to the highest fence score of any rider at the 2017 NRCHA Derby, a 229, to seal triple Championships in the Non Pro, Intermediate Non Pro and Novice Non Pro divisions. ” He is amazing. That’s the only thing I can say. Amazing. Special,” Miller said. “He tries his hardest with

We always joke that he acts like a girl,” Miller said. Her preparation to show consists of keeping him happy. “I walk him around, I pet him, I give him a cookie and tell him he’s so pretty and so cute, and let him have his confidence. He’s an odd horse. “Our government rushed to join international agreements where the United States pays the costs and bears the burdens while other countries get the benefit and pay nothing.” – President Donald J.

President Trump Puts American Jobs First significantly declined since before the Paris Climate Accord was negotiated, and will continue to decline as a share of worldwide emissions, particularly when compared to other nations such as China and India. The Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) 2017 Annual Energy Outlook reports that, from 2005 to 2016, energy related carbon dioxide emissions fell at an average annual rate of 1.4%. Emissions are projected to
continue to fall from 2016 to 2040. Meanwhile, the EIA reports that emissions in the developing world are expected to double their 2005 levels by 2040. According to recent U.S. Energy Information Administration, the United States remained the world’s top producer of oil and natural gas combined. The United States continues to be a world leader in energy, but increased competition from countries like China demonstrates the need for policies that enable America to compete on a global scale.

HARMFUL TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE: The Paris Climate Accord could cost the United States economy millions of jobs and trillions of dollars in economic output over the next several decades. According to an analysis by National Economic Research Associates (NERA), meeting President Obama’s commitment under the Paris Climate Accord would cost the United States nearly $3 trillion by 2040. By 2040, the American economy could have 6.5 million fewer industrial sector jobs, including 3.1 million fewer manufacturing jobs. Industries such as cement, iron and steel, coal, natural gas, and petroleum would be forced to cut production under President Obama’s Paris Climate Accord. SHOULDERING THE BURDEN: Under the Paris Climate Accord, the United States would carry the burden while other countries would get the benefits.
Under the Obama Administration, which signed an agreement without having to deal with the economic repercussions, the United States was committed to reducing CO2 emissions by between 26 and 28 percent from 2005 levels by 2025. Meanwhile China can continue to increase emissions for the next 13 years. The United States already contributed $1 billion to a UN Green Climate Fund. This would increase to $3 billion under pledges made by the previous Administration. INEFFECTIVE: Even if every nation fully complied with the Paris Climate Accord, it would barely impact the climate. According to researchers from MIT, if every nation that signed the Paris Climate Accord met all of their commitments until the end of the century, the impact on the climate would be negligible.

The focus of the night was the Open Classic Finals where the competitors showed up to battle it out for championship prizes, bragging rights and $75,000. Finishing the night on top of the field was Andrea Fappani riding Chic Dreamin (Magnum Chic Dream x Skeets Red Dunit) to a score of 229 to top the Level 4 and be crowned the NRBC Open Classic champion. “It never gets old to win anywhere, especially not here,” Fappani said. “It’s a special place and holds a special place in my heart because this is where I marked a 236, which is still today the highest in NRHA history, so it’s a great place where you can really showcase your horse.” Fappani and the 5-year-old stallion owned by Silver Spurs Equine wowed the crowd with a stellar performance, proving why the NRBC is one of Fappani’s favorite shows and why he had such confidence going into the finals aboard the flashy sorrel. “I was waiting for something to maybe not go as planned,” Fappani said with a laugh. “It kept going as I planned it, everything was just right on. I was having fun, to be honest. It was one of those runs where judges award a high score, but it’s not like I was trying that hard. I just let it be. A lot of times you get to some of these finals and you know you have to have

a big score to win. You almost try too hard then you get into the penalty box or you override your horse. “I knew I had a horse that could really mark in the stops,” he continued. “I had a pattern with four stops so I said as long as I nail my

You have to put your head down and work, no matter what you win; the next one’s not going to win itself. You have to go home, go to work and do the best you can.” Fappani also had success on two other horses in tonight’s finals finishing fourth aboard Smart Shiners Spook (Smart Spook x Ebony

When I got on my first horse tonight I knew what I had to think about what I wanted with that horse and that all I focused on. Then, when I got off that horse, I focused on the next one and don’t think about the last one I rode; I erase it from my memory pretty much. “I’ve learned that along the way because you just never know what’s going to happen next,” he continued. “I’ve learned to focus on one horse at a time and just go with it.” Along with the $75,000 for the title, Fappani took home one year’s use of a deluxe two-horse horse trailer from Twin Cities Trailer Sales, a custom championship saddle sponsored by Bob’s Custom Saddles, a Gist Silversmiths championship buckle sponsored by NRBC, a crystal trophy from NRBC, Anderson Bean boots, Whisper Bit from M3 Products, Ultra Cruz Equine Wellness and Joint Care plus other NRBC sponsored products like a custom embroidered cooler, a commemorative champion medal, and champion ribbon collar and roses. The Pine Cone Quest In the old days, Apache boys were trained to endure great discomfort on long journeys. This regimen worked even on young captivos, like Mickey Free. The boy is emaciated. His mop of red hair hangs across his scarred face, obscuring a lost eye. He staggers and stumbles up the narrow mountain trail. Other boys are already coming down it. They pass him as if he does not exist. He wants to speak, but dares not open his mouth. Breathing comes hard. He is determined to stay strong, but he still has so far to go. He wants desperately to prove himself worthy of the name Apache.

Proving Ground The task is simple. Each boy training to be an Apache warrior must gather at the river bank at dawn, take a gulp of water and hold it in their mouths. Then the entire group runs toward the blue ridges of the Graham Mountains. It is not only a race, for the goal is to snatch the first pinecone they can find, return to the river and drop it at the shaman’s feet. Then they spit out the water.
Long Range Warriors With this kind of training, Apache warriors could cover 75 miles a day over the roughest terrain imaginable. The U.S. Cavalry, could make about 22 miles a day—on horseback. No wonder the Apaches were so hard to catch! Read more about Mickey Free in the August 2016 edition of True West Magazine. Order yourself a copy, today. Store.truewestmagazine.com

Each year the American Horse Council presents the Rolapp Award to a Member of Congress who has been a great supporter of the horse industry. The Award is presented in honor of the late Rich Rolapp who was president of the AHC from 1974 to 1993. Previous award winners include Senators Mitch McConnell, Jim Bunning, and Blanche Lincoln, and Congressmen Hal Rogers, Bob Goodlatte, Larry Combest, Jim McCrery, and Bart Gordon, among others.
This year, Senator Mike Enzi of Wyoming was presented with the American Horse Council’s 2017 Rolapp Award for his outstanding service to the horse industry. The award was presented to Senator Enzi on June 14th at a Congressional Reception on Capitol Hill during the AHC’s annual meeting in Washington, DC before leaders of the horse industry and Members of Congress. “Senator Enzi understands how important our national forests and trails are to the horse industry, and his involvement in the National

He has made a name on Capitol Hill for his unique way of breaking down party lines and working across the aisle and has had more than 100 bills signed into law. Senator Enzi is the Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee and a member of the Finance Committee, Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee and the Small Business Committee. Mr. Enzi also recognizes the importance of the cowboy in American history and culture, and of course the horse is inseparable from the legacy of the cowboy. Every year Senator Enzi is the primary sponsor of the Senate Resolution which declares the fourth Saturday in July “National Day of the American Cowboy.” The AHC appreciates Senator Enzi for honoring this enduring symbol of American and the culture, traditions and values that are so important to the horse community.

Second Lady Karen Pence, Secretary Perdue Unveil Beehive at Vice President’s Residence, and Ask Public to Help Boost Pollinator Population
Together, the two urged Americans to do their own part to help reverse the population trend among the creatures, which are essential to producing much of the nation’s food. “All types of pollinators, such as bees, butterflies, birds and bats, are critical to providing our nation’s food, fiber, fuel and medicine,” Mrs. Pence said. “However, our beekeepers have been losing colonies for many years. This presents a serious challenge to our ability to produce many of the agricultural products that we enjoy today. The bees at the Vice President’s Residence will provide an added bonus to the vegetable and flower gardens by making them well pollinated and taste even better at harvest.” Perdue released a proclamation he has signed declaring June 19-25, 2017 as “National Pollinator Week” (Proclamation can be viewed online at https://www.usda.gov/sites/default/ files/documents/national-pollinatorweek-secretary-proclamation.pdf (PDF, 97.5 KB)). Perdue noted that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Environmental
Protection Agency led efforts to create a National Pollinator Health Strategy. The two agencies are working with a number of other federal departments to implement that strategy, which includes significant USDA research. “Most farmers and consumers have no better friends and few harder workers than the honey bee, as more than one-third of all U.S. crop production requires insect pollination,” Perdue said. “But our honeybee population has been losing ground at an alarming rate. The problem represents a diverse mix of challenges requiring a wide range of solutions. And at USDA we are leading the way in research to help out our pollinator friends.” Honeybees are the nation’s primary pollinators, adding at least $15 billion a year in value to about 90 crops by increasing yields and helping to ensure superior-quality harvests. Those crops include nuts, fruits, berries and vegetables, which add color, taste and texture to our diet. The number of honeybee hives in the U.S, has declined from 6 million during the 1940s to only about 2.5

Second Lady Karen Pence, and Secretary Perdue million today. Those losses have been attributed to a number of factors, ranging from a syndrome known as “colony collapse disorder” to stress caused by factors such as parasites and pests, transportation of bees, sublethal exposure to pesticides, and poor nutrition. Mrs. Pence and Secretary Perdue pointed out that a lack of supportive habitat near hives also contributes to the declines. Even if people don’t set up their own hives, they can help by planting bee-friendly flowers and flowering herbs in their yards and gardens. Honeybees particularly love wildflowers, lilacs, poppies and Black-eyed Susans, as well as herbs and vegetables like mint, sage, squash, tomatoes, oregano, and rosemary. In addition, bees get thirsty, and that placing birdbaths and small basins of water could help relieve their thirst.

Bully Pulpit wins Paint industry’s richest futurity race
Bully Pulpit has evidently clued in about his role in the racing game, refusing to lose. On June 3, the 2015 sorrel solid gelding by CRM Livewire and out of Judys Apollo won his third straight race of the Remington Park season and his second futurity, taking the Grade 1 $200,000 Speedhorse Graham Futurity for Paints and Appaloosas. Bully Pulpit gained the victory with a come-from-behind effort. Owned by Dan and Kaye Jones of Kemp, Texas, and trained by Matt Whitekiller, Bully Pulpit was ridden by Cody Smith. Oklahoma Paint/Appaloosa Futurity winner Hotwiredotcom, another CRM Livewire progeny, had a clear start and battled for the front early in the 350-yard event, holding the advantage until the final 100 yards.

He was wild, I’m not going to lie.” Bully Pulpit finished a half-length ahead of Hotwiredotcom for the victory with Dashin Turnpike in third, three-quarters of a length from the winner. Hang Ten, Ojo Por Ojo (ApHC), PHQ Goodbye Larry, I Like It Alota and Crosswired completed the order of finish in the eight-horse field for the Speedhorse Graham Futurity. The win with Bully Pulpit is the first in the Speedhorse Graham Futurity for owners Dan and Kaye Jones. The trainer/jockey duo Matt and Cody teamed up for their third victory in the race. They also won with I Kick (2009) and Painted Turnpike (2015).

Kiesners competing on “Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge”
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – PRCA members – brothers, Rider and Roper Kiesner – were basking in the spotlight on prime-time TV June 19. The Kiesners are part of the fivemember Team Saddle Up squad that’s competing on Season 2 of NBC’s “Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge.” The show, from the producers of “American Ninja Warrior,” has 24 teams competing in Spartan-style obstacle course races, vying for a

$250,000 prize. The show is being broadcast from Atlanta, Ga. Rider, 25, has a PRCA specialty act, and Roper, 23, a saddle bronc rider, were joined on the team by trick riders Bethany Iles and Bailey Humble and team captain Nathan Palmer, who is the only member with obstacle course racing experience. Palmer works for Conquer the Gauntlet, an obstacle course racing company. During the June 19 episode, Team Saddle Up shocked the competition by winning the first heat during the hourlong broadcast, advancing to the next round. On the course, Team Saddle Up competed in several obstacles – not all of which were shown on TV – including muddy crawls through barbed wire, rope climbing and weighted sled pulls on the mile-long course. “NBC wanted me to do a different show for them and they had kept my name in their computer, and when this show (Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge) came around, they asked me if I wanted to be a part of it and I said yes,” Rider said. “They wanted to have a rodeo team, and of course I was going to have Roper on my team, and then I called up Bethany and Bailey.” The announcers for the show – Olympian Apolo Ohno, Kelvin Washington, and former MLB all-star Nick Swisher were stunned with how well the inexperienced Team Saddle Up did June 19. “We just went at every obstacle as hard as we could,” Rider said. “At the end, we were just trying to put as much grit into it as we could and that’s what got us through. We never gave up. It was cool when we won that heat. Everybody was super excited for us and no one could believe we won. We proved we belonged.” Roper concurred with his brother. “We were ecstatic when we crossed the finish line,” he said. “It felt good to show people what us cowboys could do. The cowboys came to play.” The air date when Team Saddle Up will appear again is not known as of now. The new season premiered June 12 and consists of eight episodes. Participate in the 2017 Economic Impact Study for the United States Horse Industry Survey for National Study to be distributed via online link (Washington, DC)- The American Horse Council Foundation (AHCF) is pleased to announce that the survey link for the National Economic Impact Study will be released on June 5th. The survey link will be available until August 1st. “The National Survey link will initially be distributed through equine organizations such as the American Quarter Horse Association, United States Equestrian Federation, Certified
Horsemanship Association, American Paint Horse Association, and more,” said AHC President Julie Broadway. “We hope everyone that receives the survey link will participate. This is an opportunity to showcase how important the vast equine industry is to the United States economy, and the more horse owners, breeders, riders, trainers, racetracks, shows, rodeos and other industry suppliers that participate, the better the data will be
that is included in the final results.” The 2017 Economic Impact Study will contain expanded demographics with youth participation and additional segments of the industry, including Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies, Equine Sanctuaries and Rescues, Equine Academic Programs, and Equine Youth Organizations. Representatives of these institutions and organizations, along with Equine Competition Organizers, will be

receiving targeted and individualized surveys. The main survey is designed to capture the impact of individual horse owners (whether commercial or recreational) and industry suppliers of equine-related goods and services. A separate data request is being sent directly to Racetracks, OTBs, and Advanced Deposit Wagering businesses. The surveys were designed by the Innovation Group and a supporting team of equine industry experts. They were further vetted by key industry stakeholders as well as a Steering Committee composed of AHC staff and five outside experts. The 2005 Economic Impact Study established that the horse industry in all its segments, including racing, showing, and recreation, had a $39 billion effect on the US economy, involved more than 4 million Americans and 9.2 million horses, and supported 1.4 million full-time jobs. The study provided invaluable demographic data and insights into professions and other industries that are impacted by equine ownership, as well as proved to be extremely helpful to the industry’s efforts in documenting its size, diversity and economic importance to public officials, the press and other media. Now more than ever, it’s important for the equine industry to have access to data from all segments to ensure the most comprehensive, impactful portrait possible of our diverse and long-standing industry. If you are a member of an equine association, please be on the lookout for an email containing the link to the take the National Survey. If you are not a member of an equine association, or did not receive the survey link after June 15th and would like to participate, please email economicimpactstudy@horsecouncil. org to receive the link. Please note, all personal information collected in the survey will be confidential and will not be distributed. We thank you in advance for participating in this incredibly important update to the Economic Impact Study! If you have any questions, please contact the AHC directly at info@horsecouncil.org.

Hermès U.S. Show Jumping Team Clinches Gold at FEI Nations Cup™ CSIO5* Sopot
by Kathleen Landwehr
Sopot, Poland – The Hermès U.S. Show Jumping Team had a strong performance at their first European FEI Nations Cup competition of the season, facing off against 12 other teams and winning gold after an intense fight to the finish. Olaf Peterson Jr.’s course proved to be challenging with only one combination going double-clear. Led by Chef d’Equipe Robert Ridland, the U.S. team of Lauren Hough, Laura Kraut, Chloe Reid, and Paris Sellon held on through a jump-off against the Netherlands to claim top honors on a final score of 13 faults. “It was unbelievable,” Ridland said of the unfolding of events. “There is always more pressure when you are in the lead after the first round. The last few years, we have come back to catch up with seemingly unsurmountable leads, so we knew full well that the lead after the first round could be fleeting. We tried to keep our focus the whole time and had plans for what the outcome could be before our final rider went into the ring in the second round. It was a great day for the sport.” Chloe Reid, Lauren Hough, Chef d’Equipe Robert Ridland, Laura Kraut, and Paris Sellon (Photo Monskoo, www.photomonskoo.com) Hough (Wellington, Fla.) and Waterford were the first pair on course for the U.S. and incurred one time fault to get the team off to a solid start. Riding second for the U.S., Sellon (Los Angeles, Calif.) struggled to find a good 68

rhythm with Cassandra, tallying 18 faults. Reid (Washington, D.C.) and Codarco produced a fantastic clear round which was matched by anchor combination Kraut (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) and Deauville S. The performances of Hough, Reid, and Kraut allowed Sellon’s score to be dropped, putting the U.S. team on a total of one fault after the first round. Despite an eight-point lead over the next best team, the U.S. team had to fight to stay in contention in the second round. Hough and Laura and Meredith Mateo’s 2003 Dutch Warmblood gelding suffered rails in the triple combination for eight faults. Sellon and Willow Grace Farms’ 2008 Swedish Warmblood mare had an improved round with better harmony, though incurred nine faults. Reid and Team Reid, LLC’s 2007 Irish Sport Horse stallion seemed to be on their way to a double-clear performance but had the A element of the triple combination down for four faults. With these penalties, the U.S. team sat on a best possible score of 13 faults going into the final rider rotation. Kraut and Old Willow Farms LLC’s 2006 Holsteiner gelding needed to deliver a clear round to tie with the Netherlands for the lead and put the two nations into a jump-off. They did just that, having the only double-clear performance of the day. The Dutch Chef d’Equipe tapped Sanne Thijssen for the jump-off and she scored four faults in a time of 38.03 seconds with Con Quidam RB. The pressure was on Kraut and Deauville S as Chef d’Equipe Ridland’s chosen combination. Despite having a rail early on in the jump-off course, they sped through the timers at 36.29 seconds to clinch the gold.
Norfolk, England – The Land Rover U.S. Eventing Team secured a third-place finish in the FEI Nations Cup at the Saracen Horse Feed Houghton International Horse Trials CICO3*. The U.S. team of Hannah Sue Burnett and Harbour Pilot, Katherine Coleman and Longwood, and Caroline Martin and The Apprentice finished on a score of 160.9, while Germany won gold with a score of 122.2 and Great Britain collected silver with a score of 142.5. The U.S. combinations finished in the top 20 individually, setting them up for success at upcoming European competitions. Leslie Law served as the Chef d’Equipe at this event, in addition to his role as the Emerging Athlete Coach for the United States Equestrian Team (USET) Foundation’s Karen Stives Endowment Emerging Athletes Tour. FEI Nations Cup™ podium at the Saracen Horse Feed Houghton International Horse Trials CICO3* - (l to r) U.S., Germany, and Great Britain (Courtesy of Caroline Martin) “I thought it was a great performance with dressage producing some personal best scores,” Law said. “Show jumping went okay, but cross-country was fantastic with three competitive rides, all clear and inside the time around a course that caused plenty of problems.” Burnett (The Plans, Va.) and Harbour Pilot were the top U.S. finishers in 10th place with a score

of 49.2. They had a lovely dressage test to earn a score of 37.2, a personal best. The pair had three rails for 12 faults in the show jumping phase, but Burnett and Jacqueline Mars’s 2003 Irish Sport Horse gelding finished on a high note by going double-clear in Sunday’s cross country phase. Martin (Miami Beach, Fla.), a Karen Stives Endowment Emerging Athletes Tour recipient, finished in 15th and 16th place with her two mounts. With Pebbly Maximus, Martin scored a personal best of 43.1 in their dressage test and had a single rail down in the show jumping phase for four faults. Martin and her own and Sherrie Martin’s 2003 Irish Sport Horse gelding had 6.8 time penalties in the cross-country phase to finish on a score of 53.9. With her Nations Cup mount, The Apprentice, Martin scored 48.1 in the dressage phase and had one rail and two time faults for six faults in the show jumping phase. Martin and Sherrie Martin’s 2004 Irish Sport Horse gelding were double-clear in the cross-country phase to finish on a score of 54.2. Coleman (New Orleans, La.) and Longwood were the pathfinders for the U.S. team, beginning the competition with a dressage score of 53.5. Coleman and her own 2002 Irish Sport Horse gelding had a single rail in the show jumping phase for four faults and were double-clear in the cross-country phase to finish in 20th place on a score of 57.5.

ABOUT GUTS Probiotics. They’re good for the gut and the immune system, and therefore good for the overall health of your horse. University studies* found that in order for probiotics to be effective for horses, they must be given at a daily rate of 1 billion CFU of an individual strain. Triple Crown® doesn’t just meet this effective rate, they surpass it, and they’re the only feed that does so. In fact, Triple Crown feeds have 100 times more guaranteed probiotics than any national brand. Maybe now is a good time to take a closer look at the nutrients in your feed.

During his time in Congress, he had been a strong advocate for building a primary and secondary fence between U.S. and Mexico to enhance border security. Hunter cited a FBI statistic

The U.S. Border Patrol has a proud history of service to our nation since May 28, 1924. Extra H-2B Visas to Be Made Available
There have been reports this week that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has decided to offer extra H2B visas for temporary, seasonal workers. These visas are used for temporary, non-agriculture workers at a variety of businesses, including members of the horse industry; principally horse trainers and owners who cannot find American workers to fill semiskilled jobs at racetracks, horse shows, fairs and in similar nonagricultural activities.
The government offers 66,000 such visas a year, with the 2017 cap having been met within the first 30 days of open enrollment. This left many organizations without access to the critical labor pool provided by the H-2B program. Trainers at racetracks around the country have reported difficulties in filling staff positions. The extra visas will be available to employers that show they’d be significantly harmed if they aren’t able to temporarily hire foreign workers. DHS hasn’t decided how many visas will be offered but that number should be set soon. The department expects to start issuing visas as soon as late July.

American Quarter Horses bred by AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders epitomize the breed’s work ethic and versatility. Ranching Heritage Breeders are AQHA members who represent longevity, honesty and integrity in raising quality American Quarter Horses, while upholding the ranching heritage. Ranch-bred American Quarter Horses are held in high regard for their stamina, athletic ability and cow sense. American Quarter Horses are the preferred partner for working cattle ranches, and the horses' popularity goes beyond the ranch. The American Quarter Horse Association established the AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders program in 2011 to help showcase the ranch horses and help ranchers and breeders expand their market through events like the Zoetis AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenges. Horses bred by Ranching Heritage Breeders are eligible to be enrolled in the Ranching Heritage Breeders program, which makes the horses eligible for the Challenge events. The AQHA Executive Committee recently approved the waiving of late fees for 2017. There are five Ranching Heritage Challenges left in 2017, offering more than $75,000 in added money and the chance to compete at the Zoetis AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge Finals, slated for June 14-17, 2018, in conjunction with the Zoetis AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse World Championships at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma. Ranching Heritage Breeders are AQHA members who represent longevity, honesty and integrity in raising quality American Quarter Horses, while upholding the ranching heritage. To be accepted into the program, a Ranching Heritage Breeder must breed and register a minimum of five American Quarter Horse foals each year, must maintain a remuda of horses used to operate a working cattle ranch and have received (at a

minimum) an AQHA 10-year breeder award. “Ranching Heritage Breeders uphold the true definition of ranching heritage,” said AQHA Executive Vice President Craig Huffhines. “Buyers know that purchasing from a Ranching Heritage Breeder meansversatile, hard-working American Quarter Horses.” There are many benefits of becoming an AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder. In addition to their RHBbred horses being eligible for enrollment in the Ranching Heritage Breeders program, Ranching Heritage Breeders also have exclusive marketing and advertising opportunities through the newly launched Ranch Horse Journal, a quarterly magazine produced by AQHA Media. Additionally, all Ranching Heritage Breeders and their contact information are listed on AQHA’s website at www. aqha.com/ranching to assist people searching for ranch horses. Ranching Heritage Breeders also receive access to the exclusive RHB logo that can be used on websites, advertisements and promotional materials. The logo is also on the AQHA registration certificates of horses bred by Ranching Heritage Breeders. Visit www.aqha.com/ ranchingheritage to learn more about the Ranching Heritage Breeder program and to download the applications and nomination forms for the horses.
New York City bans use of Wild Animals in Circuses
June 21, 2017 - Following the lead
of Los Angeles – which took the same action two months ago – the New York City Council, the lawmaking body for the City of New York’s eight million residents, voted today to ban wild animal acts in circuses (after a one-year phase-in). The New York City Council embraced the policy in a commanding vote of 43 to 6, and Mayor Bill de Blasio, a staunch animal advocate, says he looks forward to signing this legislation.
(Washington, D.C., June 12, 2017) – As part of the U.S.-China 100Day Action plan announced on May 11, 2017 by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross and Secretary of the Treasury Steven T. Mnuchin, the Trump Administration today has taken important steps toward commercial shipment of U.S. beef and beef products to China for the first time since 2003. These shipments are results of the U.S.China Comprehensive Economic Dialogue co-chaired by Secretary Ross and Secretary Mnuchin for the United States and Vice Premier Wang Yang for China. Accordingly, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has reached agreement with Chinese officials on final details of a protocol to allow the U.S. to begin the beef exports to China. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue today announced the posting of technical documents related to the beginning of shipments.
Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue issued the following statement: “Today is a great day for the United States and in particular for our cattle producers, who will be

regaining access to an enormous market with an ever-expanding middle class. Since he was elected, President Trump has brought momentum, optimism, and results to American agriculture families that we haven’t seen in years and this agreement is a great example. I commend the hard work of Secretary Ross, Secretary Mnuchin, Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, and our USDA representatives. Without their dedication and persistence, this would have not been possible. I have no doubt that as soon as the Chinese people get a taste of American beef they’ll want more of it.”
Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross issued the following statement:
“President Trump is doing more to improve the U.S.-China relationship than any president in decades, and this final beef protocol agreement represents even more concrete progress. As we clear away longstanding issues like this one, focusing on near-term, verifiable deliverables,
Naitonal Finals Rodeo December 7th thru 16th in Las Vegas
The 1st NFR was held in Dallas in 1959. Later, it was held in Los Angeles and Oklahoma City before coming to Las Vegas in 1985 with the help of Las Vegas visionary Benny Binion. The Wrangler NFR is one of the hottest tickets in town, and sells out every year. The Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is the largest prize money rodeo in the world. The Wrangler NFR at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas is also the most prestigious rodeo, deciding which cowboys will get to wear the gold buckle as world champion each year! The NFR runs each December at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. The Thomas & Mack Center is located at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Each of the ten days, you’ll see the top fifteen money winners in each of seven different events compete in: bull riding, bareback riding, calf roping, saddle bronc riding, team roping, steer wrestling, and barrel racing. 2017 Cowboy Christmas Gift Show Information Be sure not to miss this, and
admission is free! The Cowboy Christmas Gift Show is the longest running and only “original” gift show of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The show will be open from 10:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. during each day of the NFR, December 7th to 16th. Enjoy walking through this amazing gift show, with more than enough wares to keep even the most avid shopper entertained all day.... probably for several days! The show is located in the North Halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center, at Paradise Road and Desert Inn, just one block East of Las Vegas Boulevard. Over 300,000 square feet of show floor hosts 400 plus vendors from across the U.S. and Canada. You’ll see a very unique and vast selection of products including customized jewelry, western wear, boots and spurs, saddles, roping gear, furniture, original art, handmade crafts, as well as a great selection of Official Wrangler NFR and PRCA merchandise. There is even a free shuttle from The Cowboy Christmas Show directly to the Thomas & Mack Center so that you won’t miss the rodeo!
we are building a sound foundation for further discussions. I look forward to engaging with our Chinese counterparts as we address more complex issues to the benefit of both our nations.”
Secretary of the Treasury Steven T. Mnuchin issued the following statement:
“The reopening of China’s market to American beef is an example of the results-oriented approach this Administration has taken in our engagement with China. We will continue to work toward a more fair and balanced economic relationship with China by expanding opportunities for U.S. workers and businesses.”
U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer issued the following statement:
“I welcome China taking this important step to start allowing U.S. beef imports after shutting them out over 13 years ago. The President’s firm commitment to fair trade that benefits the United States has made this new U.S. beef export opportunity
USDA Seeks Applications for Community Development Grants WASHINGTON, May 26, 2017 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is inviting applications for grants to support economic development in rural communities.
“These grants will support partnerships between community development groups and rural communities to develop essential facilities and create jobs and business opportunities,” USDA Rural Development Acting Deputy Undersecretary Roger Glendenning said. possible. I encourage China and all countries to base their requirements on international standards and science. America’s ranchers are the best producers of beef in the global economy, and they can compete and succeed wherever there is a level playing field.”
Background:
The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) has posted the requirements for its Export Verification program for U.S. establishments shipping to China, which will enable packers to apply for approval to export to China. The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has also updated its online Export Library specifying China’s requirements for certifying U.S. beef being shipped there. China has emerged as a major beef buyer in recent years, with imports increasing from $275 million in 2012 to $2.5 billion in 2016. However, the United States has been banned from China’s market since 2003. The United States is the world’s largest beef producer and was the world’s fourth-largest exporter, with global sales of more than $5.4 billion in 2016. Until the ban took effect, the U.S. was China’s largest supplier of imported beef, providing 70 percent of their total intake. organizations receiving RCDI grants will provide technical assistance and training to help nonprofit organizations and communities develop their capacity to undertake housing, community facilities or economic development projects. Applicants must have capacitybuilding experience for these types of projects and must provide matching funds at least equal to the RCDI grant. Grants range from $50,000 to $250,000. Eligible recipients are nonprofit organizations, low-income rural communities or federally recognized tribes. RCDI grants are not provided directly to businesses or individuals. Examples of eligible projects include homeownership education, minority business entrepreneurship, strategic community planning or assistance to access alternative funding sources. A grant awarded to Habitat for Humanity Virginia in 2016 shows how the RCDI program is helping rural communities. The organization used a $150,000 grant to train Habitat affiliates across Virginia to rehabilitate homes as an alternative to its traditional model of building them from the ground up. 77

the day’s races to honor the winning horse, then, in turn, to be honored by the Del Mar crowd. A photo and autograph session with each group will follow in the track’s Plaza de Mexico. Many of Del Mar’s racing fans over the years also were serious Chargers football fans, a natural mix for two of the area’s most highly competitive and visible sporting events. Several Chargers players were involved in racehorse ownerships and many more were summertime fans of the Thoroughbred game and regular track visitors. A Del Mar Media Guide of recent vintage featured a fun picture of several Del Mar jockeys in their silks lined up in three-point stances across from several hulking Chargers linemen in a “showdown” in the track’s paddock between races. Del Mar’s 78th summer season opens on Wednesday, July 19 and continues on to Monday, September 4, which is Labor Day. This mare has an old injury to the lateral side of her right front cannon bone, with deep scarring. There was extensive soft tissue damage which restricted her movement, causing a shortness of stride. This image shows visible enlargement of the soft tissue injury by its heat signature from recurrent inflammation. Note that the right leg is visibly larger than the left leg.
Following 8 weeks of Neprofin administration, this mare showed a marked improvement. Heat signatures have returned to normal, showing virtually no signs of inflammation or pain. Neprofin was able to digest and eliminate the inflamed scar tissue mass, which had caused lameness and a shortened stride. Note that both legs are now identical in size and shape. The mare is now sound and bears weight evenly on both front legs.

Twelve equine rescues receive grants in recognition of outstanding efforts to protect horses NEW YORK—The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) today revealed the twelve winners in its fourth annual ASPCA Help a Horse Day celebration contest. In a special video message, celebrity animal advocates Beth Behrs and Huw Collins commended participating equine rescues and sanctuaries for their year-round lifesaving work caring for at-risk horses who’ve been abused, neglected or are in need of a home. The grand prize winner, TheraPony of Ramona, Calf., received a $25,000 grant, and ten runners-up were awarded grants of $10,000 or $5,000 to support their ongoing efforts to protect horses. Additionally, Days End Farm Horse Rescue Inc. of Woodbine, Md. was also selected to receive a $5,000 grant to recognize its innovative use of social media to increase awareness about equine adoption.

I congratulate this year’s winners and thank everyone involved in the lifesaving work of caring for horses who’ve been abused and neglected.” More than 20,000 community members came out to support the 173 groups holding celebrations across 38 states in April, and winners were selected based on the creativity of their events, as well as their success engaging their local communities. celebrated annually on April 26 – a date chosen for its significance to the ASPCA’s long history of horse protection. In 1866, ASPCA founder Henry Bergh stopped a cart driver from beating his horse, resulting in the first successful arrest for horse mistreatment on April 26 of that year. The protection of horses has been a core part of the ASPCA mission ever since, which includes supporting equine welfare legislation, advocacy, rescue and targeted grants. “Though ASPCA Help a Horse Day is celebrated on April 26, we are thrilled to see that many participating organizations used this opportunity to engage their local communities throughout the entire month of April, maximizing exposure for the horses in their care who are available for adoption,” said B.J. Rogers, vice president of ASPCA ProLearning. “The ASPCA is honored to award these grants to these equine groups who are working on the frontlines to help support our shared mission to provide vital care to horses in need.”

DragMaster™. Kiser Arena Specialists developed a business to deliver the right tools and footing advice through consultation and construction not only for competition arenas but for all equine enthusiasts. Bob Kiser’s work in the industry brought him recognition and an induction into the NRHA Hall of Fame in 2011 along with the opportunity to develop the footing for the World Equestrian Games. In 2007, a partnership formed between ABI Attachments, Inc. and Kiser Arena Specialists to make the Kiser arena equipment line available on a larger scale. The partnership grew in market share throughout the United States and internationally as a comprehensive arena maintenance line was developed for arenas and facilities of all sizes.
In 2017, Bob and Jim Kiser felt the desire to again focus more intently on the development of unique products for the footing needs of all equine arenas. The People Who Make U.S. National Wildland Fire Management the Best in the World
Boise, Idaho is famous among college football fans for the blue turf on the Boise State University Broncos’ field. But in wildland fire management circles, the city is just as well-known as home of the National Interagency Fire Center or NIFC. NIFC is the nation’s support center for wildland fire management and other types of incidents. Some even refer to it as the Pentagon or nerve center for national wildland fire management. Earlier this month, Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue visited NIFC with Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke, Idaho Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter, and other officials. While there, they received a tour and briefing on the upcoming wildfire season and signed a memorandum (PDF, 64.7 KB) that was sent to wildland fire leadership highlighting the importance of inter-departmental collaboration in protecting communities and managing public lands. Collaboration is the name of the game at NIFC, which isn’t an organization, but is rather a place where the U.S. Forest Service and eight other federal, tribal, state, and local agencies work together to coordinate national wildland fire management planning and operations to ensure effectiveness and efficiency. The agencies represented at NIFC share assets (firefighters, aircraft and equipment) and work together to set priorities to allocate these assets. Effectiveness and efficiency are especially critical because no wildland fire management agency has enough assets including firefighters, fire engines, aircraft, or other equipment and machinery to respond to all the wildfires that occur on land under

The National Interagency Fire Center is also home to the Boise Bureau of Land Management Smokejumpers. Forest Service their jurisdiction. Additionally, the National Interagency Coordination Center (link is external) or NICC based at NIFC, plays a key role in ensuring that wildland fire managers receive as many of the assets mentioned above that they request as possible. For strategic purposes, wildland fire managers divided the U.S. into ten geographic areas. All of the agencies located within these geographic areas have assets that they can mobilize to respond to wildfires, but during periods of high fire activity, they typically require more. The geographic areas place orders for additional assets to the NICC which obtains them from other geographic areas, the military, and even from other countries. “We mobilize and allocate assets based on the principles of closest forces and total mobility,” said Susie Stingley, NICC Manager. “That means that we try to mobilize assets from as close to where they are being requested as possible, but if needed we can get them from anywhere they’re available.”
In addition to the NICC, NIFC is home to many other vital national wildland fire management programs, facilities, and functions, including the National Interagency Incident Communications Division, the largest civilian radio cache in the world that can provide enough radios and repeaters (a device that extends radio coverage) to support more than 50 major disasters at a time; the Great Basin Area Incident Support Cache, which issues about $60 million worth of supplies and equipment on average annually to support wildfires and the Remote Automated Weather Stations Program, which maintains about 1,800 permanent and 75 portable weather stations that provide critical local weather data to fire managers.

Dealing with Heat Stress in Horses
Your horse is an organic oven of epic proportions. Simply put, they produce a ton of heat. After just a mile of riding, your horse creates enough warmth to boil 2 whole gallons of water. While a horse’s body can usually regulate their temperature, the hot summer months make this more difficult. High temperatures, high humidity, lack of air movement, poor ventilation and dehydration, all increase the dangers of a serious heat-related problem known as heat stress.
Signs of Heat Stress As a horse exercises, their muscles turn energy into movement. But a horse’s body isn’t 100% efficient. Part of this energy is lost in the form of heat. The rate at which a horse produces heat is proportional to how hard their muscles are working. The harder a horse has to work, the more heat they produce. If horses didn’t have the ability
to regulate their heat, their body temperatures would increase by almost 60°F. Basically it’d be like riding a hot potato. Fortunately horses can dissipate around 97% of the heat they produce. To regulate their body temperature, a horse will increase their sweating rate, move more blood to their capillaries (blood vessels near the surface of their skin) and increase their rate of breathing in an effort to release any heat build-up. Heat stress occurs when a horse

can no longer properly regulate their body temperature. The symptoms to look for consist of profuse sweating (or even no sweating at all), rapid breathing (more than 20 breaths a minute), rapid heart rate (more than 50 beats a minute), dry/hot skin and an unusually high rectal temperature (greater than 100.4°F). Heat stress can also cause a horse to become dehydrated. An easy way to tell if your horse has become dehydrated is by pinching the skin on their neck. Usually, their skin should resume its normal position immediately. However, in a dehydrated horse, their skin will take a while to resume its normal position. If the initial signs of heat stress go unnoticed or uncared for, more serious complications can arise. Your horse could start breathing with great difficulty, appear distressed, stop sweating, become weak or develop diarrhea or signs of colic. These symptoms are serious and need immediate attention. A vet should examine your horse as soon as possible to provide medical treatment.
Treating Heat Stress As mentioned, horses displaying any of the more serious signs of heat stress should be examined by a vet as soon as possible. You should immediately get your horse into shade and hose or sponge them off with cool or even cold water. It’s most important to hose the insides of the legs, head and neck areas where large blood vessels are located near the surface of their skin. Use fans and encourage your horse to drink. It may take an hour or more to get all their vital signs back to normal. Horses that have seriously overheated tend to be more susceptible to overheating in the future. If your horse has suffered a serious heat stress episode, they should have 10 to 14 days of rest with some turnout and a gradual return to work.

JULY 2017
Avoiding Heat Stress Most horses adapt to summer weather if given time to adjust gradually. However, some horses will be more susceptible to heat stress than others. Performance horses such as thoroughbreds, Standardbreds, endurance and other performance horses will be influenced by heat stress during their training and competition. But high performance horses aren’t the only type to be at risk. Foals have very poor thermoregulating abilities. They can overheat simply by standing in the hot sun. Likewise, overweight horses that aren’t use to regular exercise are also at greater risk. Environmental factors can also play a role in how susceptible your horse is to heat stress. Horses stabled in badly ventilated barns and fed poorly digestible forage will produce a lot of heat during digestion, making them more prone to heat stress. Additionally, any horse that doesn’t have access to salt and electrolytes will be at a greater risk.
Nutritional Contributions to Heat Stress A racehorse will lose up to 2.5 gallons of sweat per performance (work/ race). That doesn’t mean just water, but also a lot of salt (which is referred to as electrolytes when broken down into its chemical components). Electrolytes are used to get nutrients into a horse’s cells and the cell’s waste products out. This makes them responsible for getting nerves to fire and muscles to contract. In order for these biochemical reactions to proceed properly, a horse’s fluids need the right amount of electrolytes. Your forage can also contribute to heat stress in your horse. Certain feeds create more heat when digested than others. During hot conditions, it’s important to include highly digestible fiber sources such as beet pulp to decrease the thermal load of digestion. Standlee Premium Western Forage offers a variety of excellent quality forage products, which provide increased digestibility. To learn more about these products, check out the link below.

Whether your horse is staying in a stall, pen or portable panels at a facility, spraying the area down with Biosecurity Wash will help eliminate potential contagions that might be on the walls, fences or in the ground. Put Them in a Bubble Okay, as much as you might want to at times, you can’t put them in an actual bubble, but making sure your horse’s personal space isn’t invaded by the noses of other curious horses is the best means of keeping them healthy on the road. Nothing spreads illness faster than nose-to-nose contact with an infected horse.
Vaccinate! Keeping your horse on a regular vaccination schedule greatly reduces their chance of getting sick. Speak with your vet and discuss your horse’s needs.

For horse owners, getting our four-legged friends from point A to point B and back can be anxiety inducing. When taking your horse out of the safety of their barn there’s no telling what’s a potential source of illness. Thankfully there are measures you can take to keep your equine partner protected. Better Safe Than Sorry The first step in protecting your horse from disease is having the right mindset. Don’t let the possibility of them getting sick keep you from enjoying your time with them and taking them places, but don’t let it take an outbreak alert for you to take extra precautions.

You Can Lead Your Horse to Water…
Know Your Horse Knowing your horse’s vitals when they are healthy can be crucial for your ability to recognize when there is a problem. Every horse is a little bit different but average ranges are as follows;
Don’t let them drink. Communal water sources are the perfect place for your horse to catch an illness. Instead, invest in a portable water caddy for your truck or trailer. This will ensure that your horse isn’t being exposed to anything harmful and if you tend to have trouble getting them to drink in unfamiliar places, having water from home will help keep them hydrated. Approach shared water hoses with the same amount of caution. Disinfect the end with a baby wipe or avoid putting it into your horse’s bucket.

It is much easier to keep your horse happy and healthy if you avoid sharing your equipment with others. Keeping bits, brushes, saddle pads and other items limited to use on one horse deters the spread of ailments like colds and skin infections. You can take it one step further by doing this at home and labeling items with horses’ names or assigning each horse a particular color (i.e Trigger’s grain bucket is red). 1

Horses destined for slaughter are dragged and whipped into trucks and endure long journeys without food, water, or rest. Many die or sustain injuries during transport. We should ban this practice once and for all in the U.S. Photo by Kathy Milani/The HSUS Some months ago, I wrote about a horse named Jakar, once destined for slaughter, rescued by an animal advocate, and eventually taken on by the Cleveland Police Department for law enforcement duties. Jakar, along with other members of Cleveland’s mounted police force contingent, marched in the 2017 inauguration parade in a classic rags to riches story. The turnaround in Jakar’s fortunes is on my mind as Congressional lawmakers again focus their attention on the perennial debate over the slaughter of horses for human consumption. The House and Senate Appropriations Committees are likely to take up the issue soon, and by all accounts, it’s going to be a very competitive vote, with the horse slaughter industry and agribusiness interests jockeying for the right to turn horses into mincemeat. Despite the false claims from the proponents of horse slaughter, Jakar’s story reminds us that so many horses bound

the clutches of predatory people who sell them off into the slaughter pipeline. We don’t round up dogs and cats for slaughter, and it should be unthinkable to do that to a species that helped us settle the nation. Our humane position is grounded on the notion that people who own horses should act responsibly and provide lifetime care or transfer horses to someone who can. It’s a remarkable betrayal for people to enjoy and benefit from the physical and behavioral attributes of horses and then sell them off to a kill buyer when they’re done with them. Kill buyers and other key players in the horse slaughter industry trot out the notion that they are somehow “helping” horses by routing them to slaughter, but there is nothing noble about their commerce. Horses are dragged and whipped into trucks and endure long journeys without food, water, or rest. Many die or sustain injuries during transport, including broken legs and punctured eyes. The idea of providing veterinary care to an animal about to be slaughtered is unthinkable to these profiteers. Earlier this year, and last year as well, President Obama and a bipartisan majority of lawmakers fended off the reopening of horse slaughter plants in the United States— after we helped shutter the last three plants a decade ago. But the fight over the fate of horses in the Fiscal Year
JULY 2017
2018 budget looms, and the past votes are not predictors of what will happen in the coming weeks. Earlier this year, we released results from the Remington Research Group, a Kansas-City-based polling firm, that revealed that the people of Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma strongly oppose horse slaughter. In fact, the people of every Congressional district in these states favor keeping the horse slaughter plants shuttered. If we are winning the hearts and minds of people in these states, you can be sure that people throughout the rest of the country are with us too. No one disputes that there are some homeless horses. But unlike the horse slaughter crowd that treats homelessness as an economic opportunity rather than a moral responsibility, we’re pitching in to help. With the other members of the Homes for Horses Coalition, The HSUS works to actively promote the welfare and protection of horses and other equines. We provide care and homes to horses in need, advance the highest operating standards for equine rescue and retirement homes, and promote responsible horse ownership. We assist in training thousands of horses to be rehomed at equine rescues through our Forever Foundation training program. The HSUS and its affiliates directly care for nearly 800 horses at several of our animal-care facilities. To help reduce overbreeding, The HSUS formed the Responsible Horse Breeders Council, comprised of horse breeders who work to decrease the number of surplus horses bred in the United States. More than 1,200 breeders have signed our Responsible Horse Breeder’s Pledge to help protect horses from neglect, starvation, and slaughter, by reducing the number of surplus horses in the United States. It would be a remarkable step backward to reopen horse slaughter plants in the United States. What’s needed, and what Reps. Vern Buchanan, R-Fl., Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., Ed Royce, R-Calif., and Michelle Lujan Grisham, D-N.M. are pushing, via the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act, H.R.113, is a complete ban on the slaughter of American horses, including live exports to Canada and Mexico for slaughter. Only then will we offer proper thanks to animals who’ve helped our nation in ways that we cannot even properly measure. Please contact your U.S. Senators and Representatives and urge them to ban all horse slaughter.

MAY 24, 2017 - U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell today announced over $8.3 million to substantially expand and accelerate wood products and wood energy markets. Federal funds will leverage almost $37 million in matching funds from 36 business, university, nonprofit, and tribal partners in 19 states for a total investment of over $45 million. The public-private partnerships leveraged with these grants will lead to the removal of hazardous fuels from forests while spurring the economic development of rural communities. The awarded funds will stimulate the removal of hazardous fuels from national forests and other forest lands to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires and promote forest health. “The Wood Innovations Grant Program helps create jobs in rural communities and keeps our forests healthy, said U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell. “By investing in strong markets for forest products, we can incentivize sustainable forest management and sustain our rural communities". This year the Forest Service received 114 proposals, highlighting the expanding interest in using wood as an innovative building material and renewable energy source. Since 2005 more than 230 grants have been awarded to small businesses, nonprofits, tribes, states, and local governments to improve forest health while creating jobs, renewable energy, and healthy communities. Of the 38 projects funded, 26 focus upon expanding wood products markets, and 12 increase wood energy markets. Projects address a wide range of issues that include increasing capacity at mass timber manufacturing facilities, testing the resiliency of cross-laminated timber (CLT) structures against explosives, establishing biomass district energy systems, and examining the use of biochar in restoring water quality. Since 2013 this funding has helped establish 22 Statewide Wood Energy Teams and six Statewide Wood Utilization Teams that collectively expand and support wood energy and wood products markets. This year, two more Statewide Wood Utilization Teams will be established in Alabama and Arkansas. These multiagency teams include federal, state, business, nonprofit and other partners. Recipients of the 2017 Wood Innovation grants are from Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Georgia, Idaho, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington, Wisconsin, and West Virginia. A complete list of the awards and more information on the grant and cooperative agreement program is available online at the Forest Service Wood Education and Resource Center. The mission of the U.S. Forest Service, an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is to sustain the health, diversity and productivity of the nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations. The agency manages 193 million acres of public land, provides assistance to state and private landowners and maintains the largest forestry research organization in the world. Public lands the Forest Service manages contribute more than $13 billion to the economy each year through visitor spending alone. Those same lands provide 30 percent of the nation’s surface drinking water to cities and rural communities and approximately 66 million Americans rely on drinking water that originated from the National Forest System. The agency also has either a direct or indirect role in stewardship of about 900 million forested acres within the U.S., of which over 130 million acres are urban forests where most Americans live.

Superstar Arrogate Scheduled to Return in TVG San Diego ‘Cap July 22 Arrogate at Del Mar
Juddmonte Farms’ Arrogate, the dynamic 4-year-old colt who has set racing afire with a series of powerful winning performances in the world’s top races, appears likely to make his next start in the TVG San Diego Handicap on Saturday, July 22 at Del Mar, it has been announced. The big gray – victorious in seven straight starts while amassing a North American record $17,084,600 in earnings – would be coming off a four-month freshening since capturing the $10-million Dubai World Cup on March 25. A start in the TVG San Diego could be the first of three consecutive Del Mar outings for the son of Unbridled’s Song with the $1-million TVG Pacific Classic (August 19) and the $6-million Breeders’ Cup Classic (November 4) the next two likely targets on his agenda. “The TVG San Diego likely is our next stop if all goes well,” said Arrogate’s trainer, Hall of Famer Bob Baffert. “We’ll take him to Del Mar for the summer and if he gets back in action in the TVG San Diego, that could be a good prep for the Pacific Classic and then possibly the Breeders’ Cup Classic.” The TVG San Diego is run at a mile and one sixteenth. The TVG Pacific Classic and the Breeders’ Cup Classic are both run at a mile and one quarter. “We’re very pleased that the Arrogate connections have decided to stay home and give California’s Thoroughbred fans a chance to watch the best horse in racing right now perform,” said Del Mar’s executive vice president for racing Tom Robbins. “We’ll be delighted to showcase him at Del Mar and his presence will add some marvelous spice to our overall racing program.” A young Arrogate was a winner at Del Mar last summer when he tallied in an allowance race at a mile and one sixteenth on August 4. Subsequently, he
went on a four-race tear that saw him register powerful triumphs in the $1.25-million Travers at Saratoga, the $6-million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita, the $12-million Pegasus Cup at Gulfstream Park and the Dubai World Cup. His comeback race in the Grade II San Diego Handicap was originally listed to carry a $200,000 purse, but has been enhanced to $300,000 and renamed the TVG San Diego Handicap due to incremental sponsorship support from TVG, the nation’s leading racing network and wagering service which also produces and broadcasts Del Mar’s racing programs and has been a sponsor of the Pacific Classic for the past seven years. The additional $100,000 purse Arrogate © Benoit Photo comes with the proviso that the winner of the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Classic runs in the race. “As one of racings biggest stars, we are excited that Arrogate will be on stage and performing at Del Mar,” said TVG’s CEO Kip Levin. “The sponsorship of the San Diego was a natural fit given our longstanding partnership with Del Mar and the TVG Pacific Classic. It is truly a win-win situation: California fans gets to see the best horse in the world and TVG continues to align ourselves with the highest quality of Thoroughbred racing. We could not be more thrilled.” Arrogate and the TVG Pacific Classic drew high honors from Longines and the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA) at their annual awards ceremonies earlier this year in London. For 2016, Arrogate was named the best racehorse in the world and the TVG Pacific Classic was listed as tied for second place (behind the Breeders’ Cup Classic) as the world’s best horse race. In addition to an aggressive marketing campaign highlighting Arrogate, Del Mar and TVG will combine efforts to produce a limited number of special Arrogate posters that will be given away on July 22 for the TVG San Diego. Last year, soon-to-be two-time Horse of the Year California Chrome also used the San Diego as a comeback prep for the TVG Pacific Classic after he had won the Dubai World Cup. The chestnut ace captured the San Diego, then returned to score smartly in the TVG Pacific Classic. He subsequently attempted to follow that up in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, but ran into the fast-ascending Arrogate and had to settle for second. The TVG Pacific Classic is a “Win and You’re In” race for the Breeders’ Cup Classic, meaning that the winner of the TVG Pacific Classic is guaranteed a spot in the starting gate and has all race fees ($150,000) waived. Del Mar’s 36-day summer season begins on Wednesday, July 19. Its 17day fall session opens on Wednesday, November 1, highlighted by the two-day Breeders’ Cup programs on Friday and Saturday, November 3 and 4.

TVG Pacific Classic Set for August 19 on NBC Sports Network
The 27th running of the $1,000,000 TVG Pacific Classic will be held on Saturday, August 19 at Del Mar and be broadcast live by the NBC Sports Network. The Grade I mile and onequarter for 3-year-olds and up, captured last year in spectacular fashion by subsequent Horse of the Year California Chrome, will be the centerpiece of the seaside track’s 78th summer season, which
runs from July 19 to September 4. It will air from 5 to 6 p.m. (Pacific).
The TVG Pacific Classic is the west’s only million dollar race for older horses. It is again part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series and will guarantee its winner a free spot in the starting gate for the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar on Saturday, November 4. “The TVG Pacific Classic has grown in stature year by year,” said DMTC executive vice president and chief operating officer Josh
Rubinstein. “And with the Breeders’ Cup coming our way in the fall, we believe this year’s edition will have an extra special interest for horsemen from around the country.” Rubinstein noted that NBC sees the TVG Pacific Classic as a chance to get an advanced feel for broadcasting from the track where it will show the 13 world championship races worth $28 million on November 3 and 4 this fall. The Breeders’ Cup Classic is run under the same conditions as the TVG Pacific Classic. The 2016 renewal of the TVG Pacific Classic saw champion California Chrome roll to a fivelength tally over the champion mare – and the race’s defending champ – Beholder, as well as the stakes stars Dortmund and Hoppertunity in a stellar field of nine. The race drew additional end-of-the-year plaudits when the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities ranked it as the second-best race in the world for 2016 at its recent LONGINES World Best Horse Race Ceremony in London, topped only by the running of the Breeders’ Cup Classic. The race also helped trigger the largest single wagering day in Del Mar history with a final tally of
$25,060,204 registered on the track’s ledgers. Last year, Del Mar and the Stronach Group, operators of Santa Anita Park, offered a $1-million “California” bonus to any horse sweeping the TVG Pacific Classic, the Xpressbet Awesome Again Stakes and the Breeders’ Cup Classic. California Chrome nearly pulled it off, winning the first two legs smartly, but missing by a half length as the favorite in the BC Classic to rising superstar Arrogate. This year Del Mar and the Stronach Group once again will offer the $1-million bonus to a horse who can sweep the three headline events. Noteworthy among potential runners for 2017 renewal of the TVG Pacific Classic are a pair of champions whose connections have indicated that the race is currently on their long-range radar. They would be Arrogate, the 3-year-old male Eclipse Award winner and hero of the 2016 Travers Stakes, the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Classic and last Saturday’s $12 million Pegasus World Cup in his most recent starts, as well as the 4-year-old filly Songbird, the remarkable double champion who has won 11 of her 12 starts, including 10 graded stakes.

First time at Del Mar - 2017 Breeders' Cup World Championships Races
The Breeders’ Cup today announced the official distances of the 13 races comprising the 2017 Breeders’ Cup World Championships, which will be held, for the first time, at the Del Mar racetrack in Del Mar, Calif., on November 3-4. There are two races which will be run at a different distance this year than in 2016 due to Del Mar track configurations. The Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) will be run at five furlongs (6 ½ furlongs in 2016) and the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) will be run at 1 1/8 miles (1 ¼ miles in 2016). The 34th Breeders’ Cup World Championships, which will be held during the Bing Crosby meeting at Del Mar, will feature total purses and awards of over $29 million, including a robust undercard of supporting races over the two days. The meet opens on Wednesday, November 1. The Del Mar barn area will open on Sunday, October 22, and training on the main track will begin the following day, Monday, October 23. The first stage of running in a Breeders’ Cup World Championships race is the Pre-Entry closing on Monday, October 23 at noon local time at specified pre-entry locations. All owners with potential runners that wish to compete in the Breeders’ Cup must be pre-entered by that time.

While AQHA strongly supports uniformity in the horse racing industry, it is unable to support the latest version of the newly introduced legislation. On May 25, Congressman Andy Barr (R-KY) introduced the Horseracing Integrity Act of 2017 to the House of Representatives. In summary, the bill requires “a uniform anti-doping and medication control program to be developed and enforced by an independent Horseracing Anti-Doping and Medication Control Authority.” While the American Quarter Horse Association strongly supports uniformity in the horse racing industry, it is unable to support the latest version of the newly introduced legislation. “Of particular concern regarding this proposal is the elimination of all race-day medications, including Lasix, the use of which has been endorsed by several equine groups and the American Association of Equine Practitioners to help mitigate the occurrence of exercise induced pulmonary hemorrhage in racehorses,” said Craig Huffhines, AQHA executive vice president. “American Quarter Horse representation on the Authority and funding sources for the program are also among other areas of concern that we have regarding the legislation as currently proposed.” AQHA is committed to the welfare of the racehorse and continues to work with international, national and state racing organizations and commissions to evaluate protocols to allow for uniform medication rules and deterrents of performance-enhancing drugs. In addition, the use of Lasix in AQHA shows is currently under review by the AQHA Animal Welfare Commission by request of the Executive Committee. In recent months, AQHA worked with the Association of Racing Commissioners International to separate American Quarter Horse flat racing in its medication violation model rules to help eliminate the use of illegal performance-enhancing medications. The Association has also supported recent industry movements that include out-of-competition testing and hair testing. Dude Smith: One of the few remaining Turtles
Vernon “Dude” Smith Jr. is one of the oldest living Gold Card members (No. 159) and one of the few remaining members of the Cowboys’ Turtle Association – the forerunner to the PRCA.
“It always makes you feel good when they ask your card number and they want to take pictures,” said the 89-year-old Texan, noting that numbers were assigned as cowboys entered. Smith was presented with a Montana Silversmiths buckle for being one of the four oldest Gold Card members – No. 159 – along with his friend, Tater Decker, who was No. 6. Decker passed away on March 31, 2017. “Neal (Gay) and I are the only two left of the bunch,” Smith said. Smith joined the CTA two years before the association’s name changed to the Rodeo Cowboys Association, which went on to become the PRCA. “All it did was change names – it was the same bunch,” Smith said. During that time, he was rubbing elbows with some of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame’s most notable cowboys who helped shape the sport as it stands today. “We all knew each other back then, but the guys today don’t all know each other,” Smith said. “I don’t know what happened, but there’s not as many cowboys anymore.” Smith competed in every event, except for team roping, since it wasn’t a common event during his ProRodeo career. “I only roped one steer, and that was it,” Smith said, noting that entering the steer roping was a spur-of-the-moment decision. “They said ‘people won’t know you never roped one,’ and so I roped him, tripped him, and tied him like a professional – like I knew what I was doing. I can actually say I beat a bunch of good ropers.”
Getting in the saddle As a kid, nobody would have guessed that Dude (then known as 102
Dude Smith Little Dude, after his father) would go on to compete in rodeo, let alone do so professionally. He was the first member of his family to compete or have anything to do with horses or cattle – aside from his great-great grandfather, who traded horses. His parents took him to his first rodeo when he was 13 years old and the action sparked a fire that still burns brightly 76 years later. “I told my mother that’s what I want to be and she said, ‘You don’t know how to do that,’ but I guess that they didn’t either, at one time,” Smith said. “I would get on anything that would buck a little, like a milk cow. “I was very popular with my family when I started rodeoing and they couldn’t wait to go watch me,” Smith said. “My aunt would cover her eyes, she couldn’t watch me do it.” He went on to compete across the country, from the Cow Palace in San Francisco to Madison Square Garden and on down into Houston, Fort Worth, and San Antonio – but he made most of his money competing in Kansas and Nebraska. Smith worked along the way, earning money as rodeo staff or even as “rodeo police,” in addition to whatever cash he won from competing. And when that didn’t pay enough, he’d win money by challenging cowboys to foot-races. “When we didn’t have money, we would do foot-races,” Smith said, noting that he’d wager as much as $100 in the mid-1940s (approximately $1,100 in 2017 dollars). “I hustled enough money to get a plane ticket and won over $1,000 at Philadelphia,” Smith said.
Going big Smith made his Madison Square Garden debut in 1947 by riding 15 bareback horses, 14 saddle broncs, 15 bulls and competing in 11 bulldogging rounds. He estimated he won about $6,000 ($68,239 in 2017 dollars). “The riggings we had, you could wad up in your bag, and the ones today are like I am – just stiff – and they have to wedge their hand in there,” Smith said. Three years later, Smith married Frances Crane in 1950 and she went on to win the first National Finals Rodeo barrel racing title in 1967, the first year the event was included. Smith never made it to the NFR, having topped out at No. 16 in the world standings in 1966. But, his son, Vern Smith, competed as a bull rider at the NFR in 1980, placing eighth in the average to rank 11th in the world standings.\
Making friends The rodeo road wasn’t always a smooth ride. “I wanted it so bad that I didn’t mind sleeping in the barn and hitchhiking – it wasn’t easy, but I loved it,” Smith said. “There’s no telling how many people I’ve known.” Smith traveled with Neal Gay, Casey Tibbs, Bud and Bill Linderman, and others – hitting the road and the airports to rodeos. “My best friend is Neal Gay and we’ve been sidekicks for years,” Smith said, noting the two met through Gay’s cousin, who owns the dairy that Smith worked at as a kid.
JULY 2017
“He (Tibbs) was a thrill every day – you could bet something was going to happen, he was a prankster,” Smith said. When traveling to rodeos, anything that can go wrong, likely will, such as the time the brakes went out and Smith wrecked Tibbs’ Cadillac while they were traveling near Fort Worth. Smith was behind the wheel and Tibbs was resting in the passenger seat. “I smashed on the brakes, but there were no brakes and there was a car coming, so I whipped to the right and the car left the ground. He was hollering, ‘Stop! Stop! I lost my pillow!,’ and I said it’s going to get worse than that,” Smith said with a laugh while noting nobody was hurt. “We thought we had brakes, it was a new car – but the pedal went to the floor. “I called my wife and told her we needed another car and she didn’t want to give it to us and Casey said he’d get even and wreck my car.” Just like today, it wasn’t unheard of for cowboys to get a little rough and rowdy while having fun. Even a fistfight could spur a friendship. “One of my best friends was Bill Linderman and his brother (Bud) and I fought the first time we saw each other,” Smith said. Smith and Bud got into an altercation at a bar in Tucson, Ariz., when Smith was about 17 or 18 years old that led to even the bartender joining them at the rodeo grounds to watch them fight. “Bill said, ‘If you don’t whoop his ass, I’ll whoop it for you,’” Smith said. “I said (to Bud), ‘it’s your fight, what are the rules?’ and he said anything counts. “We ended up becoming friends and that’s the way it was in my day. You had a fight and then get a beer after – no knives and guns. It was part of living.” Smith’s last time in the chutes was around 1973 when Tibbs invited him to compete. “I said, ‘I haven’t got any equipment,’ and he said I could borrow some and I got in the bareback and I made a good ride,” Smith said. “He said, ‘If you rode like that when we rode for money, you might have won something.’ I actually won a lot of money and I felt like I had done better than those guys who won all those buckles … I wouldn’t trade my life with anybody’s.”

Equitation Champion Trail and Pleasure Champion
With a meticulous eye for what it takes to build a world class facility, Al spared nothing to make this a truly special ranch with superior function. Capitalizing on the serenity of the Rio Verde Foothills, and utilizing the backdrop of the Four Peaks mountain range, this property was also uniquely created to take advantage of the surrounding area’s natural beauty.
This 30-acre ranch is centered by the main show barn, which includes in part, tack rooms, saddling areas, and the ranch offices. Investigation of Medication Ban
The AQHA Executive Committee continues to investigate the medication ban set for AQHA-approved shows beginning January 1, 2018.
The Association and Executive Committee are committed to the welfare of the horse. While the American Quarter Horse Association recognizes the therapeutic benefits of the drug furosemide, commonly known as Lasix, to help mitigate the occurrence of exerciseinduced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) in racehorses, the AQHA Executive Committee recently asked the AQHA Animal Welfare Commission to review the proposed prohibition of Lasix for show horses, set to be effective as of January 1, 2018. Balancing the use of therapeutic medication for the welfare of the horse in different types of competition, such as racing and showing, while minimizing or eliminating performance-

Lasix has been endorsed by several equine groups and the American Association of Equine Practitioners to lessen the occurrence of EIPH in racehorses. Consistent with such groups, AQHA opposed the latest version of the newly introduced Horseracing Integrity Act of 2017, which would eliminate all race-day medications, including Lasix in racehorses. The Association and Executive Committee are committed to the welfare of the horse and look forward to receiving additional input from the AQHA Animal Welfare Commission regarding the proposed prohibition of Lasix across all disciplines of show horses, including whether disciplines that may have a higher incidence of EIPH warrant different Lasix policies. In the interim, the current rule change will be held for review, and the final decision of the Executive Committee regarding Lasix usage in show horses will be announced on AQHA.com after the investigation is concluded.

to protect those who reveal wrongdoing in the agency. The bill will incentivize VA employees to provide America’s veterans with the care they deserve and hold these employees accountable when they fall short of their responsibilities. Before signing the bill, President Trump applauded our Nation’s courageous veterans, and shared the story of Sergeant Michael Verardo, a veteran who lost two limbs defending our country and had to wait two months for prosthetic reparations. Unfortunately, these stories are all too common, and the President has repeatedly called for a higher standard when it comes to caring for our veterans. President Trump discussed the work his Administration has already done to help veterans, including establishing an Office of Accountability at the Department of Veteran Affairs, organizing the seamless transition of medical records between the Department of Defense and the VA, and signing the Veterans Choice Improvement Act, which ensures veterans are able to see the doctor of their choice. These acts are meant to ensure that our veterans are treated with respect and receive the care they need. The President explained that the bill is about “keeping our promises to those who have kept us free.” His actions reflect the Administration’s commitment to providing fast, high quality care to Americans who have risked their lives in service to their country.

APHA Amateur rules simplified Showing multiple horses in various divisions–even just remembering your pattern–can be a challenge in itself. Throw in remembering rules for entering in different Amateur age divisions and classes can further complicate your show day. Before you saddle up, make sure you know the ins and outs of showing your Paint in APHA’s Amateur division. APHA recognizes two divisions for Amateurs: Amateur (19 & over) and Masters Amateur (45 & over). A Masters Amateur exhibitor may show in both Amateur and Masters Amateur at a show, so long as the same horse is not shown in both age divisions for the same class at a particular show. An Amateur and Masters Amateur exhibitors may show up to three different horses in individual working events, like trail and western riding. However, the rules above still apply—a Masters Amateur cannot show the same horse in the same event, even if it’s in a different
$475,000
age group. For example, a Masters Amateur may show two horses in the Amateur trail and a different horse in the Masters Amateur trail. A Masters Amateur exhibitor may show two horses in rail/group classes—one horse in Amateur and another horse in Masters Amateur Year-end awards are tabulated and organized based on the age of the exhibitor. For example, if a Masters Amateur shows in Amateur Hunter Under Saddle, the points earned will go toward the Masters Amateur Hunter Under Saddle Honor Roll. Show management has the right to combine the two Amateur age divisions if either has five or less entries. If so, Masters Amateur exhibitors must choose one horse to show in the age-combined class. Check out this link for a helpful handout containing examples that might help you make the correct decisions when addressing the APHA Amateur rules, whether you are an exhibitor, show secretary or show manager. Reprinting all or part of this news release is permitted, so long as credit is given to the Paint Horse Journal and a link provided to apha.com.
