This nightspot became a local legend featuring concerts with all the big name acts of the day in country music. Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Marty Robbins, Dierks Bentley, Kenny Chesney and many others also played the club. The Friday night fish fry was open to families with children and a talent contest would feature area children and aspiring singers. One of those talent contest winners, Jordin Sparks would go on to win AMERICAN IDOL on network television in 2007. In the 80’s members of the ROGUES band would produce albums and tour with newcomer LYLE LOVETT helping to launch his career. By 2004 times and musical tastes had changed and Mr. Lucky’s closed its doors after a nearly 40 year run as one of the most popular country nightspots in the USA !

J. David Sloan

Scottsdale Rd.

In 1966 Phoenix businessman Bob Sikora built and opened what was to become Arizona’s first gambling casino called Mr. Lucky’s. When the state of Arizona vetoed the idea of casino’s Mr. Lucky’s reverted to a nightclub featuring country music upstairs and rock and roll teen acts in the basement! A country band called VIRG WARNER & THE ROGUES would begin packing in music fans and dancers to the huge Mr. Lucky’s dance floor and the west side club became a hit with the locals. J. David Sloan who had been touring with Willie Nelson in Nashville moved to Phoenix to leave the music business and get into construction. Instead he was lured away to Mr. Lucky’s to eventually lead the ROGUES band for over 30 years.

AQHA President Challenges AQHA Members AQHA President Ralph Seekins discusses his focus for his term as president – the priorities of AQHA members. I appreciate the trust you put in me this year and look forward to what the future holds for our horse and great association. It was an honor to be elected as your 2017 American Quarter Horse Association president at this year’s AQHA Convention in San Antonio. As an executive committee, we are determined to continue to increase transparency and involvement with our membership. Last year, AQHA Past President Sandy Arledge started a blog to keep members informed with the happenings of AQHA and to share insight into the workings of your Association and executive committee. With that being said, it is important to me to continue that line of communication and will also be blogging during my term as president. AQHA is a member-driven organization, therefore my goals during my term as president are not to focus on my own priorities. Instead, it is my goal to work with the members and focus on our members’ priorities. The AQHA Executive Committee is made up of five individuals from different backgrounds who are working on your behalf. We have worked tirelessly over the past few years for the benefit of the Association, laying aside our own personal differences and looking at the big picture – the American Quarter Horse and AQHA. When Craig Huffhines was hired as AQHA’s executive vice president in April 2015, he set out to determine what we, as an organization, are doing well and 14

what needs to be changed. The Association conducted a gap analysis – a study that determines the difference between what our members want and how satisfied they are with the availability or Association’s handling of that issue – at the end of 2015. According to that data, four of the items that had the biggest gap included: Ensuring the availability of organized competition for exhibitors of all financial needs and skill levels: 82.1 percent of our members said that was important; 41.1 percent said they were satisfied. That’s a 40.97 point gap. Ensuring the high standards and consistency in creating and enforcing AQHA rules and regulations: 86 percent of our members said that was important; 46.7 percent are satisfied. Almost a 40 point gap. Ensuring a level playing field for all exhibitors in AQHA competition: 81.9 percent said it is important; 44.5 percent are satisfied. That’s a 37.34 point gap. Ensuring increased opportunities for recognition and rewards for those investing their time and money in formal AQHA

AQHA President Ralph Seekins and AQHA Past President Sandy Arledge at the 2017 AQHA Convention in San Antonio. Journal photo competition: 77.5 percent said it is important; 44 percent are satisfied. Again, a gap of 32 points. To improve as an association, it is important to remember how our members view AQHA and to work together to improve that perception. Henry Ford once stated, “Coming together is a beginning. Staying together is progress. Working together is success.” I challenge each of you to figure out what we need to work on as an Association and to work together to enhance AQHA. Your individual commitment is what makes our team work. You are a representative of the Association everywhere you go. I believe Vince Lombardi said it best, “Individual commitment to a group effort – that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” And, in our case, an association work. Are you AQHA proud? I am!

MARCH 2017

I want people to know that I am here to answer any questions or help with any concerns you have. I hope all of our members feel the same way about promoting our horse and AQHA both inside and outside of the equine industry. The Executive Committee and AQHA staff encourage you to be our eyes and ears and report back about what you are seeing and hearing. AQHA First Vice President Dr. Jim Heird explained several things that we were doing right as an association during the Equine Industry Business Workshop at convention this year (you can watch his speech on AQHA’s YouTube Channel): We listen to you better. We are positive about the future. Judges are better trained than ever before. We aren’t home free yet, but progress is being made. However, my point is that we are doing things well and progress has been made over the past few years. But, in my opinion, there is always room for improvement, which is why we need your help. This is your organization. You own it. My challenge to our board of directors, committee members, committee chairs and members is to re-strengthen as a team and be more involved in the Association. With your help, we can rebuild the trust in the eyes of the more than 250,000 members across the globe. Remember that you’re the owners of this Association. Help us make AQHA better. We are no longer in defense mode. We are in offensive mode – to improve and grow, while having a great time together with our horse. I appreciate the trust you put in me this year and look forward to what the future holds for our horse and great association.

CAVE CREEK, ARIZONA

TELL US ABOUT THE ALMOSTA RANCH AND WHY YOUR PROGRAM HAS BEEN SPECIAL FOR SO MANY YEARS? In 1970, John Hoyt and I moved to the Almosta Ranch on McDonald Drive and the canal bank in Scottsdale. A developer bought the property, bought out my lease, and I was able to purchase property near 108th St and Shea Blvd in 1973. At that time, that property was about 12 miles from any store and the city grew out to us. In the mid-1990s another developer came in and bought that property which had grown to 25 acres. I bought 40 acres of property on Jomax west of Scottsdale Road, which I intended to move the Almosta Ranch to in the future. That property seemed too close to town so I was able to sell it and acquire a 30-acre property on 160th St south of Rio Verde Drive in 1996, which at that time was still 12 miles to the nearest store. We moved out in 1999. On the 30 acres, I have developed one of the premier training facilities for all western events. I can’t count the number of great horses, riders and trainers that have flourished through my programs and have gone on to amazing successes. Besides that, I have continued to raise my family, which now includes two grandchildren. After training horses for over 50 years, in 2015 I made the decision to trim the number of horses that I keep in training from 40+ to 15. With my clinics, being chairman of the Judges Committee of AQHA, showing and teaching, I am still amazingly active and work hard to continue achieving more. What has made this place special is hard work and great people with wonderful horses that wanted to get to the top of their game. It has been unbelievably fun!

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?

I have recently listed the current Almosta Ranch for sale. After the sale, which is obviously an underdetermined period of time, Becky and I plan to rebuild on 10 acres in close proximity to our current location. For those of you that know me, I love working hard and helping people. Horses have been my life and will continue to be. I am looking forward to the NEW Almosta Ranch but in a smaller scale than what we have right now.

WILL YOU CONTINUE TO DO WHAT YOU ARE DOING NOW?

I will continue to take outside horses, give clinics, run my AD Tack business, Dunning Consulting LLC, and my online training business, Team AD. Cutting has been my passion for the last several years but we also will train reiners and cowhorses, along with ranch riding horses, which is the new craze.

YOU HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AN ARIZONA TRAINER. WHY?

I began my career in Arizona and plan to continue in the state that I have had so much success in. Even though I have developed prominent ranches in other states and developed horse programs for other horse enthusiasts, I have always felt I wanted to be known as a leader for the state of Arizona. My mentors Jim Paul, John Hoyt and Don Dodge not only assisted me in my career but made me realize the importance of a home base. Where other trainers have moved to Texas and other states, I will always remain here in Arizona. I always remember if it’s not broke, don’t fix it. Being in the AZQHA Hall of Fame, AQHA Professional Horseman of the Year, Western Horseman Magazine Horseman of the Year, NCHA Zane Schulte Trainer of the Year and more accolades were all achieved by maintaining a prominence in Arizona. Arizona has never been a place for raising a lot of colts so I’ve had to make it happen. I always felt that I represented Arizona, not just myself. I have been on almost every Board of Directors of state and national organizations to represent Arizona, as well.

WHAT ELSE IS NEXT FOR YOU?

Besides being excited about the next Almosta Ranch, I don’t plan to change much. I love training horses and people and working on my ranch. I run a multi-faceted business that even includes writing for six equine publications. I have now published 5 books with Western Horseman Magazine. This summer I will travel to Austria and do two weeks of clinics, and have another clinic in Bozeman, MT. 1 I love what I do and plan to continue competing, coaching and mentoring.

Census Of Agriculture Countdown Begins For America’s Farmers And Ranchers

WASHINGTON, Mar. 15, 2017 –America’s farmers and ranchers will soon have the opportunity to strongly represent agriculture in their communities and industry by taking part in the 2017 Census of Agriculture. Conducted every five years by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), the census, to be mailed at the end of this year, is a complete

count of all U.S. farms, ranches, and those who operate them. “The Census of Agriculture remains the only source of uniform, comprehensive, and impartial agriculture data for every county in the nation,” said NASS Administrator Hubert Hamer. “As such, census results are relied upon heavily by those who serve farmers and rural communities, including federal, state and local governments,

agribusinesses, trade associations, extension educators, researchers, and farmers and ranchers themselves.” The Census of Agriculture highlights land use and ownership, operator characteristics, production practices, income and expenditures, and other topics. The 2012 Census of Agriculture revealed that over three million farmers operated more than two million farms, spanning over 914 million acres. This was a four percent decrease in the number of U.S. farms from the previous census in 2007. However, agriculture sales, income, and expenses increased between 2007 and 2012. This telling information and thousands of other agriculture statistics are a direct result of responses to the Census of Agriculture. “Today, when data are so important, there is strength in numbers,” said Hamer. “For farmers

and ranchers, participation in the 2017 Census of Agriculture is their voice, their future, and their opportunity to shape American agriculture – its policies, services, and assistance programs – for years to come.” Producers who are new to farming or did not receive a Census of Agriculture in 2012 still have time to sign up to receive the 2017 Census of Agriculture report form by visiting www.agcensus.usda.gov and clicking on the ‘Make Sure You Are Counted’ button through June. NASS defines a farm as any place from which $1,000 or more of agricultural products were produced and sold, or normally would have been sold, during the census year (2017). For more information about the 2017 Census of Agriculture and to see how census data are used, visit www. agcensus.usda.gov or call (800) 7279540.

USDA Gathering New Data on Organic Agricultural Production

for accurate statistics about certified organic farming grows. This survey will be another step forward by USDA in its commitment to helping certified organic agriculture thrive and will ensure that future decisions impacting the industry stem from factual information.” Agriculture statistics are frequently used by business and policy decision makers. Farmers and ranchers themselves stand to reap benefits. The 2016 Certified Organic Survey will provide data for USDA’s Risk Management Agency to evaluate crop insurance coverage to help provide adequate pricing for organic producers. The report, to be released September 2017, will also assist producers, suppliers and others in the private sector in planning the production and marketing of new products to help sustain industry growth. “NASS has a long-standing reputation for providing objective, accurate data about all aspects of U.S. agriculture, but the only way for us to provide accurate reports is with producers’ input,” added Cline. “This is a voluntary survey and I hope that all organic farmers and ranchers who receive it will recognize it as a way to impact their industry and take the time to respond.”

WASHINGTON, Jan. 30, 2017 –The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) is conducting the 2016 Certified Organic Survey to gather new data on certified organic crops and livestock commodities in the United States. This effort is critical to help determine the economic impact of certified organic agriculture production in the United States. NASS is mailing the survey to all known certified organic farms and ranches within the 50 states. The form asks producers to provide information on acreage, production, and sales, as well as production and marketing practices. The agency asks all participants to respond by February 19. Producers can return their forms by mail or complete the survey online at www.agcounts.usda.gov. “In recent years, U.S. farms and ranches have experienced tremendous growth in certified organic agriculture sales. Last year, NASS reported that U.S. certified organic producers sold a total of $6.2 billion in products in 2015, up 13 percent since 2014,” said Adam Cline, NASS Census Section Head and member of the USDA Organic Working Group. “As sales from certified organic agriculture products increase, demand

A thrilling night of finals action at the NRCHA Stallion Stakes in Las Vegas, Nevada, wrapped up with Brady Weaver, Enterprise, Utah, scoring a career highlight when he piloted SJR Reygun (Dual Rey x Playguns King Badger x Playgun), a 2012 mare owned by Gary Ewell, to the Open and Intermediate Open Championships. Weaver guided SJR Reygun to a composite 662 score for the win, earning a 215 in the herd work, a 217 in the rein work, and a blistering 230 down the fence. The Stallion Stakes Open Championship paid just over $35,000, and the Intermediate Open title came with an $8,087 paycheck. Weaver’s prize package included a custom saddle sponsored by the NRCHA, a Gist buckle, a CR Morrison Trophy, a pair of boots from Rios of Mercedes, and a gift certificate from Platinum Performance. The $3,500 Sire Award check went to Linda Holmes, who nominated SJR Reygun’s sire, Dual Rey, to the NRCHA Subscribed Stallion Program. “I knew she was a good mare,” Weaver said of SJR Reygun, who came into his program as a 2-yearold. “I’m just glad it worked out.” When describing his incredible 230 score in the fence work, Weaver said he came into the arena intent on

doing the “same thing as always – get him across that back pen, and get out with him, and just let my horse do the rest.” He admitted, “I don’t remember much. I don’t know – I just kept spurring!” It was the biggest career win for Weaver, who arrived in Las Vegas with just over $110,000 in NRCHA lifetime earnings. He came to the reined cow horse discipline after getting his start in the race horse

industry. “I started as a kid, cleaning stalls and riding all the pickles. And they started putting me on the ones that wanted to kill everybody else, and I was too dumb to say no. That was where we started. I wanted to ride cow horses, so I went out to California and worked for a guy named John McDonald. I was around [NRCHA Hall of Fame horseman]Tony Amaral a lot when he was an old man, and he told me a lot of stuff that I didn’t know even what he was talking about then. It just progressed to here,” Weaver said. He thanked his wife, his support staff at home in Utah, and SJR Reygun’s owners, the Ewells, for supporting him since he first went out on his own as a professional horseman. The Open Reserve Champion was NRCHA 2 Million Dollar Rider Todd Bergen, Eagle Point, Oregon, riding Metalic Dual (Metallic Cat x Dual Whisper x Kit Dual), owned by Dave and Kathy Ferguson, Cottonwood,

California. Metalic Dual earned a 657 composite (218 herd/216.5 rein/223 fence). The Reserve Championship paid $25,939. As the highest-scoring offspring of Metallic Cat in the Stallion Stakes Open Finals, Metalic Dual also earned the $10,000 Metallic Cat Open Incentive check, sponsored by Alvin and Becky Fults of Fults Ranch, Metallic Cat’s owners. The Stakes Limited Open Champion was SJR Tachitas Cata (Metallic Cat x Tachitas Hickory x Docs Hickory), shown by Stephen Hutchins and owned by MC Performance Horses. Hutchins guided SJR Tachitas Cata to a 628 composite (209 herd/205.5 rein/213.5 cow) for the win, which paid $9,013. The $1,000 Limited Open Sire Award went to Fults Ranch. Hope Miller, Brush Prairie, Washington, had a brilliant night in Las Vegas with her stallion, Dare To Sioux (A Shiner Named Sioux x Tari Darlin x Taris Catalyst), winning triple championships in the Non Pro, Intermediate Non Pro, and Novice Non Pro divisions. They scored a 647.5 composite (203 herd/219.5 rein/225 cow), earning combined paychecks of more than $13,000. Their prizes included a custom saddle, Gist buckles, a CowTrac system sponsored by CowTrac, a CR Morrison Trophy, boots from Rios of Mercedes, custom spurs from Dennis Moreland Tack, and multiple gift certificates from Platinum Performance and Farnam. Three sire award checks totaling $2,000 went to Carol Rose, who nominated A Shiner Named Sioux to the NRCHA Subscribed Stallion Program.

McLain Ward and HH Azur Deliver Five Flawless Rounds Omaha, Neb. - On his 17th attempt, McLain Ward with HH Azur won the 2017 Longines FEI World Cup™ Final title on Sunday in front of an electric home crowd in Omaha's CenturyLink Center. The 2016 Rio Olympic team silver medalist combination jumped five consecutive clean rounds to secure the title that has eluded him his entire career. Switzerland’s Romain Duguet and Sweden’s Henrik Von Eckermann finished second and third, respectively. Seven additional U.S. combinations joined Ward, who all put forth great effort despite varying levels of experience. “I’ve been a fighter, digger, and grinder my whole career. I try never to give up and try to keep working at it. The team works at it, and today’s just a culmination of a lot of people’s hard work,” said Ward. A total of 26 combinations, including four U.S. combinations, advanced to Sunday’s Jumping Final where two rounds determined the champion. One rail separated the top three keeping the competition extremely tight. Switzerland’s Romain Duguet went clear to remain on four penalties putting extra pressure

on Ward for a clear round. Belgium’s Gregory Wathelet had one rail, which put him at seven penalty points, overall, giving Ward extra breathing room. Resting on zero penalties heading into the first round of competition, the crowd watched in excitement and anticipation as Ward (Brewster, N.Y,) and Double H Farm & Francois Mathy’s 2006 Belgian Warmblood mare took on the course. Ward and HH Azur

delivered a clean round to move to the second round still in the lead.

Charlie Jacobs (Boston, Mass.) with Cassinja S, CMJ Sporthorse LLC’s 2006 Zweibrücker mare, and Laura Kraut (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) with Zeremonie, Old Willow Farms, LLC's 2007 Holsteiner mare, joined Ward in the second round and ended with 20 and 23 penalties, respectively. After accumulating faults during each day of competition, Kraut ended on a high note with a clear round on Sunday.

MARCH 2017

“This was the first round where she actually felt like she normally does outside. She was loose and relaxed, listened to me, and was not so overwhelmed with the environment. She will come out of this with more mileage and experience, and I am looking forward to the future,” said Kraut. Duguet continued to put the pressure on Ward, going clear in the second round to remain on four penalty points. Wathelet followed and dropped another rail giving him 11 total penalties. With no room for error, Ward and HH Azur remained focused and determined entering the arena. The dependable mare gave Ward everything she had to help Ward seal the victory. “Owners Hunter Harrison and François Mathy are huge father figures in my life. I learned a tremendous amount from both of them. Much of who I am is because of these two men, and to have them both own, what I consider the best horse I ever sat on in my life, it’s emotional enough, said Ward, following his double-clear performance on Friday.

Also, a reminder that the Arizona Youth World team attending the AQHA Youth World show has their stalls and entries paid for by AzQHA and its amazing sponsors and supporters each year. Be sure to stop by AzQHA.org often to stay informed of great offers and AzQHA events. We look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events.

Mules Rule! True West magazine believes it’s time to take a long overdue look at the real heroes of the American West. In a cover story in the May issue you will read about great mule moments in frontier history and learn about the daring feats of endurance they achieved on an almost daily basis. Here’s a little taste of the coverage inside: Harvey Riley, a muleskinner, had this to say about mules: “Popular opinion of his nature has not been favorable; and he has had to plod and work through life against the prejudices of the ignorant.”

The Baja Hinny In the mountains of Baja, California the vaqueros there prefer a mule that is born from a female donkey who has mated with a stud horse. The offspring is known as a hinny and the cowboys there prefer them because they walk carefully on the rocks and they are easier to feed because they will eat anything. Mules from mares will go three or four days without drinking water, but a hinny can go without water for “mucho dias” (many days).

The Real Heroes Of The American West “There is no more useful or willing animal than the Mule. And perhaps there is no other animal so much abused, or so little cared for. Popular opinion of his nature has not been favorable; and he has had to plod and work through life against the prejudices of the ignorant.” —Muleskinner Harvey Riley, in his 1867 book, The Mule

Muleskinner Blues In the 1850s, the U.S. government paid to have a boatload of camels brought to the Americas for service on the American frontier. The so-called camel experiment was successful, but when the Civil War broke out, the Arabian camel drivers brought over to handle them returned to their native lands and, unfortunately, the camels were left in charge of old mule skinners who had no liking or use for the camels. It also didn’t help that mules and horses had an unconquerable fear of the camels and would stampede at even the smell of them.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Matt Shiozawa and his wife have some spending money for their 10-year anniversary trip after his performance this weekend.

The Chubbuck, Idaho, tie-down roper is bringing the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo title back to the Wilderness Circuit after his 7.3-second run in the finals Sunday night. And now, he and wife Ali are headed even further south than Kissimmee. “My wife and I have our 10-year anniversary coming up next week, Shiozawa said. “Ten years ago we didn’t really do anything for a honeymoon because we were just kids trying to make it work. We’re going to Playa del Carmen south of Cancun. We can finally do it right, 10 years later. Shiozawa won the four-man finals round at Silver Spurs Arena aboard his 18-year-old bay mare, Alotta. He collected a $7,537 check for that run, and added another $7,949 from his previous runs at the April 6-9 rodeo. “I’ve ridden Alotta in Las Vegas many times, said Shiozawa, a nine-time qualifier for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris RANGER. “She’s like Old Faithful for me. She’s a bossy little mare with a lot of attitude, but she’s dirty-tough, and she’s also a family horse. I could win a rodeo like this on

her, and then 20 minutes later my girls could be riding her around and petting her. This is Shiozawa’s fourth RNCFR title – he also captured championships in 2008 and 2012-13. However, he nearly missed his chance to take home the money, buckle, saddle, Polaris RANGER vehicle and a $20,000 voucher toward a new RAM truck. Shiozawa’s time of 9.3 seconds in the 8-man semifinals was just enough to get him into the finals, where he came out firing. “I wasn’t satisfied with my semifinal run – it got me into the finals, but I didn’t feel like I nailed it, he said. “I got to rope first in the finals, and I drew what I would say was the best of four good calves. Sometimes I like to be out first and set the time to beat. Shiozawa was thrilled with all the prizes he collected as the national champion, and says the money won will not only go toward the anniversary vacation, but help him be at home more with his wife and three daughters – Stella, Lorelei and Ivory. “This is huge for the rest of my season, he said. “I’m a family man, and I like to be home as much as I can, so this money for the standings is a big help. The RAM voucher and the buckle is nice, and I really needed a Polaris. So this whole thing is just great for me. I appreciate all the sponsors who contributed to make this happen for us.

in the Stanley Performance In Action Invitational, presented by Cooper Tires, Sunday afternoon at Rimrock Auto Arena. The North Carolina (Mooresville, N.C.) cowboy moved seven spots up from No. 10 to No. 3 in the world standings with the win. Mauney went a perfect 4-for4 in Billings, including a monster 94.25-point ride aboard the 2016 PBR World Champion Bull SweetPro’s Bruiser (D&H Cattle Co./Buck Cattle Co.) to win the Built Ford Tough Championship Round. It was the second time Mauney conquered Bruiser, the last time coming in Round 4 of the 2015 Built Ford Tough World Finals, and it carried him to his first BFTS event win since Nampa, Idaho, last season. He also earned his second round win of the year after covering Mudshark (D&H Cattle Co.) for 89.5 points in Round 3. Mauney took home 778.3 total world points for the weekend along with $41,596. He now trails current world No. 1 Eduardo Aparecido (Gouvelandia, Brazil), who was sidelined this weekend with an injury, by 1,123.76 points. Shane Proctor (Grand Coulee, Washington) slotted into second place after his own 4-for-4 performance. Proctor covered both bulls he saw on Sunday, starting with an 85-point ride on Sully (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/ Clay Struve) in Round 3 and closing with an 88-point trip aboard Jack Daniel’s After Party (Dakota Rodeo/ Chad Berger/Clay Struve) in the championship round. It was the first time this season that Proctor went perfect at an event, and it helped him net 350 world points and $18,685. He also shifted from No. 15 in the world standings to No. 11.

Marchi makes sports history in Billings with 600th ride

BILLINGS, Mont. – 2008 PBR World Champion Guilherme Marchi (Itupeva, Brazil) wrote his name into the history books when he became the first cowboy in history to ride 600 bulls on the elite Built Ford Tough Series (BFTS). The historic ride came in Round 2 of the Stanley Performance In Action Invitational, presented by Cooper Tires, Saturday night at the Rimrock Auto Arena in Billings, Montana. Marchi covered Shocker (D&H Cattle Co.) for 86.25 points for career ride No. 600. The 14-year veteran is the PBR’s all-time leader in qualified rides, and has a 55.18 career riding percentage in the BFTS. He has also collected $4,901,979 in career earnings. Older Horses Compete with Top Joint Care Equine arthritis is a very real threat to older horses. That’s why horse owners and trainers use LEGEND to help combat aging equine joints. “To keep an older horse going, you have to use measures to help them. And LEGEND is one of those to help their joint health,” says Elle Young, competitor.

Laine Ashker, also a competing equestrian, prizes a 17-year-old as her top horse. For many, joint dysfunction is the most important factor to deal with as their horses age. TW Grose, trainer, know the challenges of keeping older horses sound. “I have a retired 22-year-old gelding. I showed him as a youth. He was a world-champion, high point champion in the country. He has a lot of miles on him. LEGEND is something we give him.

Johnson Juggles Barrel Racing with Business

A rodeo arena and a tennis court may seem worlds apart for most people. But for Scottsdale barrel racer Barb Johnson, the two venues represent the two halves of her world, a unique blend that combines her passion with her commitment to family. Johnson grew up in Arizona, the daughter of a Phoenix-raised cowboy and a Canadian, George Johnson. She inherited her love of riding from both parents and began by following in her late mother’s (Susan Johnson) footsteps into English disciplines like dressage and eventing. But soon it was her father’s passion for rodeo, as well as an environment more friendly to Western riding, that had her picking up a barrel saddle. Her father rode bareback horses and bulls as well as team roped and Johnson followed his path to rodeo, buying her WPRA card by the time she was 20. “My one big claim to fame is that I was the 1981 average champion at the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) in the goat tying,” she notes, adding with a laugh, “which has nothing to do with barrel racing.” That win did help her University of Arizona rodeo team to a third place finish in the nation that year. Johnson graduated with a preveterinary degree but never went on to vet school. By that time, her father had hung up his rodeo boots and began a new career as a land developer. One of his projects is

Barbara Johnson the highly successful La Camarilla Racquet, Fitness and Swim Club in Scottsdale. “We’ve been in business for 35 years,” Johnson notes proudly. The family also has interests in other projects including running some cattle and she helps with most of them, acting like a business manager. But her primary jobs are sales and marketing for the club. “We have to support our habit,

right,” she jokes of barrel racing. Balancing her family’s business and barrel racing for many years, Johnson has had plenty of success in both worlds. A veteran of numerous Turquoise Circuit Finals Rodeos, Johnson has competed at the thenDodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Pocatello and came within a breathe of qualifying again last year. “I hit a barrel in the second round and I was right behind Lori [Todd] and she hit one in the third

HORSE BOARDING

round,” Johnson says of the Ram Turquoise Circuit Finals Rodeo, held last October in Las Cruces, N.M. Although she placed in both the first and third rounds, the hit barrel did not sit well with the veteran cowgirl. “I just hate to hit barrels, I hardly ever do,” she said. “That’s the last one I’ve hit too.” J ohnson has stayed involved in the circuit and even served as President of the Arizona Chapter of the WPRA for several years. Though she has had her share of nice horses, she hasn’t yet had that one outstanding individual. “I’ve been looking for that one super horse my whole life . . . I think I finally got him.” Johnson’s newest mount is Playguns Fame, aka Ellis, a horse Johnson had her eye on since his futurity days. “He won about $20,000 in the futurities and won third in the BFA Derby,” notes Johnson. His wins also included a pole bending futurity, which earned him the Roper Apparel All Around award for placing in both the poles and barrels. Johnson purchased the gelding in early 2016, qualifying for the Turquoise Circuit Finals in their first year together. It was a super match that almost never happened. “Jessie didn’t want to sell him,” Johnson says of the horse’s owner and trainer Jessie Telford of Caldwell, Idaho. In fact, Telford had passed on previous offers to buy the horse. Telford and her husband Jake operate Telford Training, training and continued on page 52

Barbara Johnson competing in reined cow horse events as well as barrel races. It was the former that brought them to Arizona last winter for the Sun Circuit show in Scottsdale. It was then and there that Telford changed her mind. With two young daughters and plenty of horses, Telford decided she didn’t want the talented Ellis to be standing in a pen. Plus Johnson had two colts—one by Dash ta Fame and another by Frenchmans Guy—with the right combination of speed and cow to help sweeten the deal. “I’m so thankful that Jessie changed her mind on selling,”

Johnson says. Ellis is by Playgun and out of the Dash ta Fame mare Zigzagenzani, now owned by Crago Performance Horses. He was bred by Copper Springs Ranch in Montana before the Telfords purchased him. Though Johnson and Ellis had plenty of success stories in their inaugural year together, one rodeo they did not have luck with was Cave Creek, a rodeo just down the road from Johnson’s home. “I hit a barrel to place last year so I had to redeem myself,” Johnson says, adding again how much knocked over barrels bother her. “He jerked the left front shoe on that run,” Johnson says. “I knew I was

Those who work to promote this year’s theme can enter a competition to win the World Veterinary Day Award, says World Veterinary Association. The event, according to the World Veterinary Association (WVA), “aims to highlight and promote the different facets of the work performed by veterinarians all over the world, and to raise awareness on their contribution to improve animal health and welfare, as well as public health.” This year’s theme is “Antimicrobial Resistance — From Awareness to Action,” and WVA members and organizations are encouraged to promote awareness about this topic. Those who do can enter a WVA competition for the most successful contribution to promoting awareness to the theme. The criteria the WVA judges will look or include: contribution and achievements on the WVD 2017 theme; involvement of relevant stakeholders and general public; collaboration with the public health sector; media coverage; and follow-up initiatives. The winner will receive the World Veterinary Day Award.

Antimicrobial Resistance Theme for this Year’s World Veterinary Day

So why is the WVA focusing on this theme? “Veterinary services including veterinarians and veterinary paraprofessionals have a key part to play in the fight against antimicrobial resistance, through their role in regulating and supervising the use of antimicrobials, offering professional advice to farmers and animal owners and collaborating with the human health sector,” WVA writes on their website. “To continue to progress in disease control management and in improving animal welfare, veterinarians need to encourage and achieve a sustainable change in behaviors towards a responsible and prudent antimicrobial use.”

How to Fine-Tune a Horse’s Diet to Match Its Medical Needs Easy ways to support horses diagnosed with chronic conditions through nutrition

As we know, practicing medicine

means a lot more than simply prescribing medications. Instead, many equine conditions require a multimodal treatment approach, frequently including changes in diet and environment. Consider heaves, for example. Not only do horses benefit from either systemic (corticosteroids, bronchodilators, omega-3 fatty acids) or inhaled (corticosteroids, bronchodilators, cromones) medications, but also management changes. As described in the recently published ACVIM revised consensus statement on inflammatory airway disease of horses, using low-dust bedding and feedstuffs (e.g., changing to a complete pelleted feed rather than hay), improving barn ventilation to reduce respirable airborne particles, turning horses out 24/7, and soaking hay and avoiding hay nets if/when hay is offered are all equally important. Similarly, peer-reviewed publications describing nutritional modifications for a variety of other common medical equine conditions abound. Consider some of the following recommendations when discussing a patient’s management with the owner. In many cases, small changes in diet can make a big difference in a horse’s life. Insulin Resistance and Equine Metabolic Syndrome

It is now well recognized that many horses and ponies are not as sensitive to the effects of insulin as expected. In many cases, the hardier

54

breeds, so-called easy keepers and ponies are more at risk to develop equine metabolic syndrome (EMS), which is characterized by altered insulin dynamics, obesity and chronic laminitis. With no medical treatment available for either insulin resistance (IR) or EMS, weight loss— approximately 1 to 2 percent of their body weight per week — is the primary target. Weight loss can be achieved by: Accurately assessing the horse’s body condition score (BCS) before, during and after the period of weight loss. This may seem like common sense to veterinary practitioners, but several recently published studies reported that owners still finding it challenging to determine their horse’s BCS. For example, one Australian research team described its experience with 10 Pony Club groups involving 229 horses and ponies. They reported that approximately 40 percent of owners significantly underestimated their horse’s condition — meaning they thought their horses were thinner than they actually were — whereas only 16% of owners overestimated body condition. Take the time to help owners understand how to assess a BCS. Encourage your owners to use readily available BCS charts to achieve/maintain a BCS of 5-7. Alternatively, have owners download easy to use apps for their smartphones, such as Healthy Horse. Decrease pasture intake but still allow turnout for exercise. This will necessitate using grazing muzzles or dry lots; Soak hay to reduce intake of water-soluble carbohydrates (WSCs) in addition to caloric restriction, recommends hay-soaking expert Cathy McGowan, BVSc, PhD, DEIM, Dipl. ECEIM, MRCVS, of the

University of Liverpool’s Department of Musculoskeletal Biology, Institute of Ageing and Chronic Disease, in the U.K. There are many ways to successfully soak or steam hay. Ensure horses are being offered no more than 1.25-1.5% of their body weight in forage (pasture and hay) per day; and, encourage owners to have their hay analyzed to ensure soaking is sufficient to remove adequate WSCs while maintaining sufficient electrolyte levels and balance. These dietary changes are not only beneficial to help manage insulin dysregulation but also address the laminitis frequently occurring in affected horses. Don’t forget to ensure owners are providing appropriate farrier care and using appropriate analgesics during flare-ups.

Equine Cushing’s Disease

Like IR and EMS horses, those with equine Cushing’s disease are frequently overweight and also often suffer from chronic laminitis. The above-described strategies for weight loss in IR and EMS horses are also usually appropriate for those with equine Cushing’s disease, including hay soaking. In fact, hay soaking/ steaming will be doubly beneficial because it also reduces respirable air particles that are detrimental to older horses with heaves (COPD, equine asthma), common in older horses (like those affected with equine Cushing’s disease). Further, a hindgut buffer may be beneficial to help control the pH in the large intestine to help prevent the onset of additional bouts of laminitis.

Osteoarthritis

Be certain to use all available resources supported by evidence-

MARCH 2017

based medicine for the management of this common and painful, debilitating condition, including: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs; Intra-articular corticosteroids, hyaluronic acid, polysulfated glycosaminoglycans; Interleukin receptor antagonist protein (IRAP I and II); Oral avocado-soybean unsaponifiable (ASU) and omega-3 fatty acid supplements; and, Weight management (including routine exercise as described above). Consider This - Regardless of the underlying condition, be certain to highlight the following when discussing weight loss/management with owners: It is important to actually weigh hay rather than dolling out flakes. This important fact was emphasized in a recent article on the nutritional management of colic. Specifically, the study authors mentioned that individual flakes of hay vary in weight by as much as 1 to 2 kilograms (2.2 to 4.4 pounds). As a result, horses fed by the flake can be easily overfed. Caloric restriction and dietary modification alone is often not sufficient for weight loss — exercise is required. Hand-walking, longeing, long-lining, hill training, interval training (trotting for 30 seconds, recover for 30 seconds, repeat), and light hacks or trail riding are all good ways to start getting your horse fit and lose weight (as long as the horse is not suffering from a current bout of laminitis). Finally, as recommended previously, get to know a reputable, knowledgeable, professional equine nutritionist or your local extension specialist. Refer your clients to these sources to help revamp their horse’s diet, tailoring each diet to your patient’s individual needs.

Test your horse’s skills at an AQHA Trail Challenge near you. Spring is quickly turning to summer, which means it is the perfect time to ride your American Quarter Horse at an AQHA Trail Challenge. An AQHA Trail Challenge is a judged course that tests a horse and rider’s ability to work as a team and navigate through natural

AQHA Trail Challenges obstacles they might experience on a trail. By competing in a trail challenge, riders enhance their horsemanship skills while learning about safety and fun on the trail. There are generally six to 16 obstacles in any given trail challenge, depending on the land and terrain of the host location. A judge or judges (determined by the amount of obstacles) are located throughout the course evaluating a rider’s ability to maneuver his horse through the obstacle. Each horse-and-rider team starts out with a value of 70 and then gains or loses points, depending on their ability to navigate the course. The horse and rider (partnership)

with the highest overall value is declared the trail challenge winner in each division.

This mare has an old injury to the lateral side of her right front cannon bone, with deep scarring. There was extensive soft tissue damage which restricted her movement, causing a shortness of stride. This image shows visible enlargement of the soft tissue injury by its heat signature from recurrent inflammation. Note that the right leg is visibly larger than the left leg.

Following 8 weeks of Neprofin administration, this mare showed a marked improvement. Heat signatures have returned to normal, showing virtually no signs of inflammation or pain. Neprofin was able to digest and eliminate the inflamed scar tissue mass, which had caused lameness and a shortened stride. Note that both legs are now identical in size and shape. The mare is now sound and bears weight evenly on both front legs.

EL CABALLO REY Equestrian Art Academy

by Cynthia Lippon

“HORSE IS KING”. A center for equestrian learning in Cave Creek, founded by the Spanish ecuyer, Manuel Trigo, is a place dedicated to pursuing the lightness of the French classical tradition of horsemanship. Focused horsemen and women with various breeds of horses gather at ECR to study timeless methods of training that benefit their horse’s ultimate lightness, strength, impulsion, and collection… building blocks for success no matter the discipline. There are riding lessons and an exciting array of activities, both classical and those reflecting Manuel’s Spanish heritage.

LEVADE, CABRIOLE, TERREA-TERRE, high school movements that are rarely seen today except for places like the Spanish Riding School in Vienna are often discussed at ECR. Foundational work for these high school movements is the basis of Manuel’s training program. On any given day at the academy, one might observe the more experienced horses and riders striving to perform at that level. In addition, lessons and clinics for GARROCHA, REJONEO, WORKING EQUITATION are offered for the serious, but fun-loving horse and rider. In addition to the training and teaching by Manuel, adjunct instruction in Pilates, Fencing, and Drumming is offered to support the riders at ECR to develop their personal riding skills. Pilates for core strength and rider balance. Fencing for rider centering and balance. Drumming for developing rhythm while unmounted helps riders to coordinate the movements of their hands and feet to create the separation of aids that riding in lightness requires. ECR is a truly unique and special place where, striving at the highest level of endeavor, nobility and majesty of the horse is nurtured 66

MARCH 2017

and encouraged to emerge though harmonious partnership with man.

STORY OF AN ECR RIDER

As a young girl, Betsy Tismeer had a dream. Her early exposure to the Lipizzaner’s from the Spanish Riding School came in various ways and planted a seed in her. She wanted “THAT”. Meanwhile, while catch riding all types of horses in the H/J world, she became a solid rider. A later foray into competitive dressage on a warm blood, further exposed Betsy to the more commonly pursued horse sports. While living in Spain and South America, she grew to love the tradition of the Spanish horse, especially the artistic aspect, and jumped right in to breeding and riding the Peruvian Paso. Soon she was the owner of her first Andalusian. This, of course, for our intrepid Betsy, lead to her starting the Baroque Riding Club of Arizona where riding in parades to show off these magnificent animals was only part of the fun. In time, her path lead her and her exceptional black PRE stallion to Manuel Trigo and ECR. Betsy reports that she came only to observe Manuel and his training style for almost a year. She was, at first, a bit concerned that he did not use the modern dressage pyramid as a training guide. He employed the more classical philosophy of putting the horses into collection at an earlier stage of training. It became apparent to her that the focus was the wellbeing and longevity of the horse, while she marveled at how happy the horses in training appeared. As a one of Manuel’s riders, she has learned to be more patient and defer her needs to the horse’s needs. (Spoken like the professional psychologist that she is!) Betsy truly feels blessed to share her horse journey with her husband, Jack, who is also a ECR rider. Through her long association with Manuel, one of the greatest gifts she has received is that she now understands “balance” in the horse and the essential importance of it to the fulfillment of her dream! Check out www.elcaballorey.com, www.thelightnessfoundation.com and www.trigomanuel.com for more information.

It is not very often equestrian athletes have down time; many show or work with multiple horses at events or train numerous clients. During the FEI World Cup™ Finals, athletes show no more than two horses, leaving them with more down time than usual. Read on to find out how a few members of the U.S. contingent spends their free time.

“Generally, I show so many horses, I don’t have time to eat lunch, especially in the winter circuit. The days go by in a blur. With one horse, I am not the best at just sitting around. However, it is nice to sit and watch and see what I may be able to learn.”

“My two-year-old fills a lot of my day. I have a pretty large sales business and operation, and Florida is a particularly hectic time of the year because I wear a lot of hats. It’s nice to be able to focus. I don’t get anxious because I don’t have all of my time filled, and I can get into a routine that I enjoy and feel that I am at my best.”

Truck Talk with Nate Brekken

Tip of the month- It’s time for a brake check everyone

Preventive maintenance has always been top of mind for us at Strictly Diesel and with summer towing season just around the corner, we’re wondering - have you had your brakes checked recently? I have had to do a

lot of driving on Phoenix roads lately. Stop lights and or signs don’t seem to mean what they used to! Whether it’s blatantly going through red lights, or not even trying to slow down on the yellows - we all seem to be in a hurry these days. To ensure reliability and safety, have your diesel truck brake system

checked to catch any small problems before they become big ones. Every manufacturer’s brake pad life expectancy is different and the way everyone uses their truck is different as well, so how your brake pads wear may vary drastically between you and your neighbor’s trucks. We all need to take a deep breath

Nate Brekken and slow down. Take notice of any symptoms your truck is having.

Omaha, Nebraska - March 30, 2017 - Isabell Werth (GER), the most decorated rider in Olympic history, captivated the crowd at the FEI World Cup™ Finals Omaha 2017, winning the FEI Grand Prix competition at the CenturyLink Center on Thursday. Riding her Olympic mount Weihegold OLD, Werth rode to an impressive score of 82.300%, the only entry to score above 80 per cent. Werth, with the12-year-old Oldenburg mare that she rode to team gold and individual silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics, is seeking a third FEI World Cup™ title in Omaha after having won at Gothenburg (SWE) in 1992 and then in Las Vegas (USA) in 2007. “Today I was well prepared, but you never know what can happen. It was expected that Weihegold could get 80%, but you never know. I was very happy,” said Werth. “She felt tense when she came into the arena because the atmosphere was so electric and there was big applause when Laura finished. I had to be a bit careful at first, there was a slight mistake in the two tempis (changes of lead every two strides), but it was definitely my fault, it’s always the rider’s fault. I felt safe after the two tempis and forgot to continue to concentrate, but the rest of the test was fantastic. I am completely happy with today.” Hot on their heels was U.S. rider Laura Graves and Verdades, scoring 79.800%. The Rio Olympic Bronze medalist was equally pleased with her performance and that of her 15-yearold Dutch Warmblood even though they stood in the runner-up position. “Basically I came here to win and finishing second to Isabell still feels a lot like winning,” said Graves. “I thought he was really, really honest. I made a couple of unfortunate mistakes. I think we would have been a little closer to Isabell’s score. It was mostly rider error. I didn’t know what to expect. I actually cannot watch my own class, it makes me too nervous.

MARCH 2017

Laura Graves and Verdades I didn’t see the crowd or the stadium full of people, so I didn’t know what to expect. “It’s super fun to ride in the World Cup™, the crowd sounds louder and you can feel them riding with you. There’s nothing like riding in a World Cup and I am very much looking forward to Saturday.” Great Britain’s Carl Hester and Nip Tuck tucked in just behind for third scoring 76.671%. The test seemed to go as expected for Hester. “The first day test for him was not bad. The first day is generally hit and miss and I always say, well, whatever happens on the first day is OK because he’s normally great on the second day. I like to ride him conservatively on the first day, conservative and nice. It was a great ride. I am really happy with him. I don’t expect to be too far behind on Saturday.” The scores from the Grand Prix do not carry forward. The 14 riders receiving scores above 60% moved forward to compete in Saturday’s FEI Grand Prix Final, the Dressage Freestyle to Music, which will determine the Champion of the 2017 FEI World Cup Final. Equestrian sports’ most prestigious annual indoor championship for jumping and dressage horses, the FEI World Cup™ Finals Omaha 2017 has attracted the world’s top riders and horses representing 27 countries, including Olympic, World and European Champions. They will compete for the coveted titles in front of 60,000 fans from all 50 states and 20 countries.

Bullfighter Spencer injured in scary wreck

Scotty Spencer, who has been a PRCA bullfighter since 2005, knows all too well the dangers of the job. While doing that job April 22, at the Longview (Texas) PRCA Rodeo, Spencer was severely injured by Andrews Rodeo Company’s Monkey Punch. Moments after the first bull rider of the performance, Forrest Marshall, was bucked off, Spencer shot in to protect Marshall and the trouble began. The bull was spinning to the left, and as Spencer ran in, the bull bumped into Spencer with his head and horns and pushed Spencer into the chute face first. From that point, things got much worse for Spencer. “When I shot the gap, the bull hit me just enough to slow my momentum down that I didn’t get all the way through,” said Spencer. “I hit the bucking chute and bounced back out and the bull was still turning back and he came down on top of me with his back end and drove me into the ground.” Spencer suffered a dislocated left

hip and broke his left leg below the knee, in three spots. “I also was knocked out during the accident,” said Spencer, 38. “I remember shooting through there the first time and him hitting me up against the bucking chute, but I don’t remember him coming around with his back end and hitting me until I saw it on the video.” Spencer regained consciousness before he was transported out of the arena and taken to Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview. Spencer had surgery on his left leg April 23, which included a rod being put in his leg. “This is the first surgery I’ve ever had,” Spencer said. “I’m not sure exactly how long I will be out. I’m planning on seeing Dr. Tandy Freeman this week in Dallas. I’m guessing I will be out around three or four months. I plan on coming back and being stronger than I was before I was injured.” Prior to the Longview PRCA Rodeo, Spencer worked his first career RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo, April 6-9, in Kissimmee, Fla.

Rural America is hopeful that President Trump’s promised infrastructure improvements begin with the rural roads that helped carry him to the White House. Past infrastructure spending and stimulus packages have left rural America in the dust, with the primary focus being on improvements to urban and suburban areas. But agricultural and business groups are speaking up and asking that an infrastructure improvement package also address the unique needs of rural communities. Recently, more than 200 groups signed onto a letter sent to the president asking him to remember rural America in his plans to strengthen our infrastructure. “Those of us in rural communities have seen our infrastructure deteriorate, jeopardizing jobs, our agricultural competitiveness, and the health of rural families,” the letter said. Rural infrastructure is not only essential to local communities but also provides critical links to global markets for agriculture and other industries. Farmers and ranchers depend on highways, railways and waterways to ship food, fuel and fiber across the country and around the world. According to the Agriculture Department, trucks carry about 75 percent of domestic agricultural tonnage, and nearly half of U.S. ag exports are shipped by rail or barge, respectively. Yet, with a quarter of the nation’s bridges in need of serious repair, and many locks and dams along our waterways in need of updates, the ability of farmers to get their product to market could be in jeopardy. According to AFBF’s Andrew Walmsley, now is the prime time for rural America to speak up on this issue, before it hits a crisis level. “If we’re going to go down this path again to investing in infrastructure, it’s important for all of us to ring the warning bell that there is a real need in America’s countryside to address these infrastructure concerns,” he said. “All of our infrastructure, for that matter, is a sustainability issue as far as making sure our farmers can get their products to market, get a fair price and remain competitive on the world stage where margins matter,” said Walmsley. “Traditionally, we have been competitive because of our fine infrastructure, but we can’t get lax and let it fall behind.” America’s farmland grows the highest quality food, fuel and fiber in the world, and supports millions of U.S. jobs. Keeping rural America moving and giving rural businesses room to grow is a win for us all.

September 20-24 - announces new format

Dr. Nelson grew up in southern California and graduated as valedictorian of his college at Brigham Young University. He completed his doctorate of medicine at the University of California, San Diego, followed by training in general surgery and urologic residency at UC Davis. Roscoe S. Nelson, MD

DOES GETTING OLDER HAVE TO FEEL LIKE THIS? As our bodies age, the amount of testosterone produced decreases, resulting in a number of symptoms, including: brain fog, anxiety, irritability, depression, loss of muscle, fatigue, inflammation, weight gain, memory loss, insomnia, low libido and low energy. Although many physicians simply dismiss these symptoms as part of the aging process, bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) can be used to treat and even reverse these symptoms by restoring your hormone levels to normal ranges.

IS IT RIGHT FOR ME?

A simple blood test can help con rm whether BHRT can help you regain your health and vitality. Once your hormone levels are determined, we can identify the amount of testosterone your body needs and address the benefits and risks of BHRT for your situation.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

While traditional hormone therapy has been around for a long time, BHRT pellet implantation is the most convenient, efficient method available. With BHRT, pellets of compressed hormone powder are inserted under your skin, providing a steady dose of bio-identical hormones directly into the bloodstream via circulation. This regulated delivery mimics your body’s natural processes and avoids the roller coaster-like uctuation of hormones experienced with oral hormone pills or topical creams. Patients receiving BHRT can expect to feel relief from symptoms as early as one week after implantation, and each pellet lasts for 3 to 6 months.

IS IT SAFE?

Yes, bio-identical hormones are a safer alternative than traditional synthetic hormones. Why? When developing synthetic hormones, pharmaceutical companies intentionally alter the molecular structure of the hormones so they can patent the product. These modifications cause side effects and health risks that can be more damaging than the original symptoms. By contrast, bio-identical hormones are molecularly identical to hormones produced naturally by your body, making BHRT the safest, most natural way to manage hormone deficiencies. The side effects of bio-identical hormones are mild and easily managed by dose adjustment. BHRT may also offer long-term health benefits; bio-identical hormones restore the protective benefits originally provided by your naturally occurring hormones, such as a reduced risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and breast cancer.

BRT IN WOMEN?

Conventional wisdom has designated testosterone a “male” hormone, but in reality, a woman’s physiologic health is dependent on a steady supply of testosterone. In fact at a woman’s reproductive peak, she produces more testosterone than estrogen. As women age, however, their testosterone levels begin to decline. Because females are more sensitive to testosterone, a small drop in testosterone can have serious effects on a woman’s health, including increased in ammation and body fat, low libido, lethargy, a decrease in muscle mass and bone density, and problems regulating body temperature. BHRT can help reverse these menopausal symptoms and improve a woman’s quality of life.

BRT IN MEN?

Beginning at age 30, a man’s body makes less testosterone. By age 50, many men experience a significant drop in testosterone known as “andropause” or male menopause. With this drop, many men begin to experience clear signs of low testosterone, such as decreased sex drive and erectile dysfunction. Low testosterone can also cause an increase in abdominal fat, anemia, and in ammation, and a decline in muscle mass and bone density. These symptoms can be treated and even eliminated by normalizing testosterone levels. In addition, despite the claim that increased testosterone makes men angry or violent, testosterone has actually been shown to improve friendliness by decreasing irritability, nervousness, and fatigue.

Ag Groups Meeting with Trump Administration on Trade Washington, D.C. Executive staff leaders from 11 major U.S. agricultural and agribusiness organizations commended the Trump administration for engaging in a substantive and productive meeting today focused on the importance of continued growth of food and agriculture exports. The meeting followed a series of written communications to the Trump administration from the broad-based U.S. Food and Agriculture Dialogue for Trade, as well as a number of the individual organizations, stressing the importance of agricultural trade. Those communications also have expressed an eagerness on behalf of the food and agriculture sector to work actively and constructively with the administration in preserving the major benefits of the North American Free Trade Agreement to the sector while seeking further improvements to modernize the 23-year-old accord, as well as to reinvigorate trade negotiations with important U.S. agricultural trading partners in the Asia-Pacific region.

MARCH 2017

It is clear from this meeting and other interactions that the Trump administration understands and intends to pursue expansion of U.S. food and agriculture exports which contribute to U.S. manufacturing, job creation and economic growth, the groups said following the meeting. We are committed to offering substantive proposals and ideas, and look forward to further opportunities to work with the administration and its trade team as they develop specific strategies for engaging in trade negotiations with our most important trading partners. We are pleased that we received assurances from the Trump team that it will take us up on that offer. During the meeting, the agricultural organizations noted that 95 percent of their potential customers live beyond the U.S. border, and that the diverse food and agriculture sector supports more than 15 million U.S. jobs, creates more than $423 billion in annual U.S. economic activity, and is the single largest U.S. manufacturing sector, representing 12 percent of all U.S. manufacturing jobs.

Horse Saved from Sink Hole

It’s easy to forget how many things the human body is able to do that other animals can’t. Not only do we have the ability to speak and solve complex problems, but even something as simple as having opposable thumbs makes a world of difference. Think of all the things that our bodies are capable of that other animals aren’t just because we have two legs instead of four! We can climb, pick things up, and even reach our backs! With that in mind, animals often find themselves trapped in difficult situations that we would have no problem getting ourselves out of. When they’re in a

situation that humans would find scary, an animal ends up being in even worse shape! So when this horse found himself unable to get out of a sinkhole, it was up to some skilled humans to help.

In Kittitas County, Washington recently, the owners of an elderly male horse named Copper were concerned when he suddenly went missing. They knew he wasn’t able to move with the speed he once did, and they became nervous with the thought that he’d gotten into some trouble. When they searched the area where they’d left him along with the other horses, they came to a terrifying conclusion: he’d fallen into a 15-footdeep sinkhole that had appeared seemingly overnight. The excavators realized that the hole that Copper had fallen into was so small, it would’ve been too difficult to raise him out of there. Instead, it was time for plan B: they dug a ramp into the side of the hole with the hopes that the horse would walk out on his own. It took two excruciating hours to dig the ramp and try to coax out the hungry and dehydrated horse—but he persevered! But perhaps the most heartwarming part of the rescue was what the other horses did after Copper was able to stand up on his own. “As soon as he walked out, he gave a little neigh, and the horses that were in the pasture [did] as well,” said a spokesperson for the fire department. “They all ran together as a little herd and came over and check on him… it was amazing!” You can see Copper’s triumphant moment climbing out of the pit below!

Champ is an all alfalfa pellet. It can be used as the only source of roughage for all classes of horses

Total is a pellet of alfalfa and bermuda hay with corn. The energy yield is approximately the same as an all alfalfa pallet. It has the advantage for a lower protein yield that may be beneficial for many classes of horses. An excellent feed for most classes of horses.

Relieve is a mixture of alfalfa and oat hay with an energy and protein yield similar to bermuda. The energy and protein value are ideal for many mature horses with a low energy requirement. This will require supplement energy for increase work or growth.

(520) 424-3033 Stanfield location at 35604 West Hwy 84, Stanfield, AZ 85172. Hours of Operation is Monday - Saturday from 7am to 5pm. Sundays closed.

Worker is a blend of alfalfa hay and corn grain resulting in a very high energy source. This is an ideal way to feed grain as consumption will be slower than feeding straight grain. It should not be fed as a complete ration except in cases of extreme energy demand.

84

This is an all bermuda hay pellet. The lower energy and protein yield is ideal feed for horses that have a moderate to low energy requirement. This pellet will require more supplement energy for growth or work.

Ultra is a blend of alfalfa hay and oat grain. This results in a very high energy yield with a moderate protein level. This is an ideal feed for horses with a high energy requirment growing and/or working. Ultra should not be fed as the only feed to horses with a low energy requirement.

WPRA History on Display at ProRodeo Hall of Fame

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - In anticipation of the 2017 ProRodeo Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on August 5, the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association opened a historical exhibit on Friday, March 31. This exhibit will be housed in the 101 Gallery at the front of the Hall until September 1. Visitors can learn the history of the Association from when 38 women met in a hotel room in San Angelo, Texas, in 1948 to start the Association called the Girls Rodeo Association (GRA) through the historic 2017 ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductions, that will include barrel racers for the first time ever. In addition, there is a flair for fashion clothing display showing the clothing trends through the years, a look back at the 1988 and 2002 Olympic Command Performance Rodeos held during the Olympic Games in Calgary and Salt Lake City, respectively and a Horsepower section honoring the horses that have been awarded with honors such as AQHA Horse of the Year, Horse With the Most Heart and Rising Star Award. Suni Olkjer “I am thrilled with the new partnership between the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and the WPRA,” said Kent Sturman, Director ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy. “Not only will we now honor the women who excel in the sport of barrel racing, but with this exhibit, we can educate our guests and fans about the history of the WPRA and promote this important segment of the sport of professional rodeo. These outstanding women have been

instrumental in advancing this event and they deserve to be celebrated.” As announced on March 28, the two individuals and one equine partner that will be honored in the inaugural WPRA Hall of Fame class include Wanda Harper Bush, Charmayne James and a joint PRCA/ WPRA equine inductee Star Plaudit “Red.” They will be joined by the PRCA inductees which include Buck Rutherford (All-Around), Enoch Walker (Saddle Bronc), Cody Custer (Bull Riding), Tommy Puryear (Steer Wrestling), Mike Beers (Team Roping), Randy Corley (Contract Personnel), Bob Ragsdale (Notable), Smith & Velvet (Livestock) and Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo (Committee). Wanda Harper Bush was multitalented, becoming the most decorated cowgirl in the history of the WPRA (formerly the Girls Rodeo Association). When the GRA first formed in 1948, Bush was one of the first to sign-up. All totaled she won 32 world titles - nine all-around (1952, 1957-58, 1962-65, 1968 and 1969), two barrel racing titles (1952-53), two cutting world titles (1966, 1969), one flag race world title (1969), 11 calf roping titles (1951-56, 1960, 1962, 1964, 1966-67) and seven ribbon roping titles (1951, 1953-54, 195659). She finished as reserve world champion in the barrel racing three different times. While Bush’s barrel racing world titles came before the NFR began, she qualified seven times (1959-60, ‘62-65, and ‘74) for the NFR during her career. Bush will be inducted posthumously having passed away on Dec. 29, 2015. Charmayne James, who grew up in Clayton, N.M., the home of the very first barrel racing National

Finals Rodeo in 1959, won the first of 10 consecutive world titles at the young age of 14 in 1984. James was the first WPRA member to wear the coveted No. 1 back number in 1987 and became the first barrel racer to cross the $1 million record in career earnings. In addition to the 10 consecutive world titles (19841993), James and Scamper won the NFR average title six times (1984, 1986-87, 1989-90 and 1993). In 1996, Scamper became the first barrel horse and only barrel horse (until 2017) to be inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. James would add a cherry on top of her illustrious career returning to the top of the sport aboard Cruiser (Cruisin on Six) in 2002, winning her 11th world title and seventh NFR average title. Bringing symbolism to this new chapter in the history of the PRCA and WPRA is best summed up with the induction the horse known as Star Plaudit “Red.” Star Plaudit holds a very unique record in the world of professional rodeo, one that is not likely to ever be duplicated. The bay gelding won two World Championships in the sport in a single year and contributed to a third, at the age of 12. Red, as he was affectionately known, carried his owner Sherry (Combs) Johnson to the GRA World title in the barrel racing and close family friend Tom Nesmith to the RCA world title in the steer wrestling and helped the Oklahoman also claim the RCA All Around championship, all in 1962. The ProRodeo Hall of Fame, which is a popular Colorado Springs attraction for rodeo fans and tourists alike, has already inducted 250 people, 27 rodeo committees and 31 animals. The 2017 ProRodeo Hall of Fame Inductions will take place at 10 a.m. MT on Aug. 5, 2017 in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Hall of Fame is currently open from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Wednesday - Saturday. Starting May 1 - Aug. 31 they will be open seven days a week from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Polylast™ SurfaceGuard with Microban® Antimicrobial Technology When performance matters, safety and comfort are key! Whether it’s in your trailer, wash racks, aisle ways, or any other locations that your horses frequent, Polylast™ offers the best slip-resistant surface available. The Polylast™ cushioning effect absorbs 40% to 50% of the impact shock on your horse’s hooves, which means that even horses with hoof or leg soreness are more comfortable. Since your horses don’t have to strain to maintain their footing they can be more relaxed and ready to perform even better! No mats are used in a Polylast™ floored trailer so there are no mats to pull, clean and replace. Imagine never having to pull mats again! This porous surface allows fluids to flow through, and eliminates the need for any bedding, saving you time and money on bedding and labor. This also means your horses breathe cleaner air and stay cleaner.

I started installing Polylast at my “Almosta Ranch”, five years ago. It is in my stalls, wash racks, saddling areas, and hot walker. Polylast is durable, long lasting, looks great, and actually saves me time and money on cleaning and maintenance. I have never used a product that provides my horses with the comfort and safety of Polylast. My horses are better off because of Polylast, and yours can be too!

Meradas Little Sue

Meradas Little Sue, three-times NCHA World Champion, 1996 NCHA Horse of the Year, and NCHA earner of $670,098, was put to rest on April 21, 2017, twenty-seven years to the day after she was foaled, in 1990. She spent her final years at Circle Y Ranch in Millsap, Tex., under the devoted care of Penny Youngblood and Nancy Pearce, who purchased her in December 2014, at the Western Bloodstock NCHA Futurity Sales. “We were looking at a daughter of Meradas Little Sue … and as I was thumbing through the (sale) catalog, there was Meradas Little Sue, and my heart stopped beating,” said Pearce. “We thought, if nothing ever happens with this mare, reproductively, if we can buy her, she will have a

shown by his son, Jody Galyean, an NCHA Hall of Fame Rider, to place fifth in the 1993 NCHA Futurity.

Meanwhile, Kobie Wood, who had shown the stallion Cash Quixote Rio as 1990 and 1992 NCHA World Champion for Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt, had his eye on Meradas Little Sue and convinced the Heiligbrodts to purchase her in April 1994.

MARCH 2017

“She was a little mare, but real gritty, with a lot of heart and intensity,” said Wood. “She was one that if you cut for two and a half minutes, she would. A horse that can hold one for two and a half minutes, whether it runs out of air or whatever, is a good horse.” In 2001, Meradas Little Sue was sold by the Heiligbrodts, also prominent Thoroughbred owners, at the Western Bloodstock NCHA Futurity Sales for an all-time cutting horse record of $875,000. “When we bought her, Kobie and I both showed her in the open and non-pro and we advanced to the finals 90 percent of the time, in both of them,” said Corinne Heiligbrodt. “That tells you what kind of horse she is. Dynamite comes in small packages.” Meradas Little Sue is the dam of 26 NCHA money earners of $1,490,354, with an average of $57,321. Two clones, bred and owned by Circle Y Ranch, were foaled in 2015 – Meradas Little One and Meradas Little Two. Circle Y Ranch is also the home of Im Countin Checks, a current leading sire of NCHA money earners.

Eating! An Important Key to Improving Insulin Resistance the neck, shoulders, tailhead, and back.

By Juliet M. Getty, Ph.D.

Do you have an overweight horse? Chances are he is insulin resistant. Excess body fat leads to elevated insulin. Elevated insulin leads to more body fat storage, which leads to greater insulin resistance, and the vicious cycle continues. Even horses of normal weight can be insulin resistant, exhibited by regional fat deposits along

The opposite of insulin resistance is insulin sensitivityUnlike when humans are “sensitive” to a food or ingredient—meaning intolerant or allergic—insulin sensitivity is a good thing. It simply means that the horse’s cells respond well to insulin and there is no longer a need for the pancreas to

continually pump out high levels of this hormone. Storage of body fat normalizes, as well as blood sugar levels. Putting your horse on a diet that restricts forage will not increase insulin sensitivity. The problem is that horses are designed to graze. They need to consistently chew to neutralize stomach acid (through saliva production, a natural antacid).

Left with an empty stomach, your horse will likely develop ulcerations. But even more damaging is the hormonal stress response he will experience. This results in increased insulin, and ironically, your horse remains overweight because excess insulin tells the body to hold on to body fat. Furthermore, insulin is highly inflammatory, leading to pain and inflammation throughout the body, including increasing the propensity for developing laminitis.

Consistently eating forage, on the other hand, matches what a horse would naturally do. It allows cortisol (stress hormone) secretion to calm down, making the cells more responsive (more sensitive) to insulin. Researchers at Louisiana State University[i] evaluated how eating affects insulin sensitivity; they determined that hay-deprived mares experienced a greater degree of insulin resistance and less insulin sensitivity than those mares who were fed hay ad libitum (free-choice). These results are consistent with a horse’s natural eating pattern. A healthy, insulin sensitive horse is a horse that will not easily gain weight when fed forage free-choice. A healthy horse will burn body fat and not store excessive amounts. Reduce concentrates but not forage Calorie reduction, though important, should only be accomplished by reducing or even eliminating commercial feeds and cereal grains. Never reduce forage intake. While pasture grazing may not be an option for your overweight, insulin resistant horse during certain times of the day or seasons of the year, you should always offer hay, day and night, 24 hours a day. Be sure to provide a vitamin/mineral supplement to fill in the gaps that exist with hay. To make sure your hay is appropriate to feed free-choice, it is best to have it tested, so you know that it is low enough in sugar, starch, and calories.[ii] To evaluate the testing report, look at the column labeled “Dry Matter.” Add the ESC (simple sugars) to the starch. This amount should not exceed 11%. The Digestible Energy (DE) is an indicator of calories and should not be more than 0.95 Mcals/lb (2.09 Mcals/kg) on a dry matter basis. Allow your horse to self-regulate continued on page 94

Insuline from page 92 When forage is restricted, your horse perceives this as “winter is coming,” and his body adjusts by holding onto body fat. But if hay is always available, he will soon get the message that he can walk away, and the hay will be there when he returns. It is important, however, that the hay never runs out, not even for 10 minutes, to allow his brain to relax. It is amazing to watch - he starts to calm down his eating, eats more slowly, and eats less – eating only what his body needs. Insulin sensitivity increases, and body weight begins to normalize. With the help of exercise, your horse’s cells will respond to insulin even better and no longer store excess body fat.

Bottom line

The closer you get to a feeding environment that simulates a natural setting, the healthier your horse will be. Give your horse a chance to be a horse, and let him tell you how much forage he needs. He has the ability to regulate his intake to match just what he needs, resulting in a normalized hormonal response. He will be insulin sensitive, not resistant. Juliet M. Getty, Ph.D. is an independent equine nutritionist with a wide U.S. and international following. Her research-based approach optimizes equine health by aligning physiology and instincts with correct feeding and nutrition practices. Dr. Getty’s goal is to empower the horseperson with the confidence and knowledge to provide the best nutrition for his or her horse’s needs.

These micrographs show treated and untreated bone cells in a mouse model of severe bone loss. Wisconsin researchers have identified two native protein factors that help keep mesenchymal stem cells—the master cells that make bone and cartilage—happy in the petri dish. The work could one day help make regenerating lost bone in patients a reality. A discovery by the University of Wisconsin, Madison (UWM) researchers could one day lead to the use of proteins found in human bone marrow to regrow bone—not just for humans, but for dogs and cats, too.

Wan-Ju Li, Ph.D., a UWM professor of orthopedics and biomedical engineering, and Dr. Tsung-Lin Tsai, Ph.D., a UWM postdoctoral researcher, reported their findings online in the scientific journal Stem Cell Reports in February. The scientists identified proteins lipocalin-2 and prolactin

in bone marrow as key regulators of the master cells controlling bone growth. “These are pretty interesting molecules,” said Dr. Li of the two proteins. “We found that they are critical in regulating the fate of mesenchymal stem cells.” While Li and Dr. Tsai’s research is human-based, Li said their findings are universal and should be true across different species, thus holding promise for veterinary medicine, too. Li and Tsai found that by exposing mesenchymal stem cells to a combination of lipocalin-2 and prolactin in culture that senescence, the natural process that robs cells of their power to divide and grow, is reduced and slowed. The ability to manipulate mesenchymal stem cells in the laboratory and keep them ready to divide and form bone on cue could pave the way for “implants seeded with cells that can replace bone tissue lost to disease or injury.” Li said that the next step will be for researchers to “find an appropriate animal model to verify their results.”

Three Not-So-Common Myths about Feeding Horses

by Juliet M. Getty, Ph.D.

Horses are complex animals, and correctly meeting their nutritional needs can be challenging. We all have our horses’ best interest at heart, but it is easy to understand how feeding misconceptions can occur. Here are three not-cocommonly held myths. Myth #1: Horses don’t need as much hay during the night because they sleep. Horses are awake and moving virtually all the time. Mature horses will sleep up to two hours per day, broken into short periods. These 15 to 20 minute naps are intermittent throughout the day and night. In other words, horses do not sleep for any length of time like other animals do. Being prey animals, horses’ sleep must be taken in frequent breaks of short duration, ideally in a group situation where some take turns

resting while others remain alert for dangers. And here’s why they need to have forage (hay and/or pasture) available all of the time, day and night: Horses are trickle feeders, designed to graze continuously to keep the digestive system functioning normally, thereby preventing ulcers and colic. Feeding them in sync with their natural instincts and physiology requires that they have forage available any time they want it. 24/7. The way you can determine how much hay to feed at night is to make certain that there is some hay left over in the morning. If your horse runs out of hay and you wake to find him kicking and pawing, he is hungry. But more than that, he is in pain (due to the acid bathing his stomach) and he is mentally stressed. This stress can lead to a multitude of health problems and, ironically, it can prevent an overweight horse from losing weight. You can ease your horse’s discomfort by giving him more hay than he could possibly eat during the night. Once he realizes that the hay supply will never run out, he will start to self-regulate

his intake and actually begin to eat less than he used to because he has calmed down, both physically and emotionally.

Myth #2: The horse’s stomach should be empty while exercising to avoid digestive upset. We don’t feel comfortable exercising after a large meal and we therefore assume that our horses don’t either. But define a “meal.” We generally think of feeding a commercially fortified feed— something that comes out of a bag. Or we may feed a meal of oats along with supplements. And you’re right: This type of meal that is low in fiber and high in feedstuffs that provide starch, protein, and fat should not be fed immediately before exercising your horse. But forage should! It’s just the opposite—restrict forage before exercise and you’ll produce, rather than avoid, digestive upset. Here’s why: The horse’s stomach, unlike our own, secretes acid all the time. That’s right—it never stops. Chewing produces saliva, a natural antacid. But when the horse is left without anything to chew, the acid will accumulate in the stomach and settle along the bottom (as water would in an empty jar). The lower portion of the stomach (the glandular region) has a protective mucus layer, but the upper squamous region has no such lining. Ask your horse to move, and the acid sloshes around, reaching the unprotected area, leading to an ulcer. And, as the acid flows through the small intestine, cecum, and large colon, it can cause further damage along its path, potentially leading to colic and ulcerative colitis. Allow your horse to graze on hay or pasture before asking him to move—15 minutes ought to do the trick. You’ll not only keep him healthy, but he won’t be in physical and mental discomfort, making him more relaxed and receptive.

Myth #3: Electrolyte supplements meet the horse’s salt requirement. Your horse sweats more during the summer and drinks less during the winter, making electrolyte supplementation worth considering. But electrolytes alone will not

MARCH 2017

stimulate your horse to drink more water—and water intake is critically important to ensure proper digestion. To encourage drinking, your horse needs to have enough sodium (salt). A balanced electrolyte supplement is designed to replace what is lost from perspiration, but electrolyte supplements should only be given to a horse that is already in good sodium balance. There are several ways to accomplish this. The best ways include offering free-choice granulated salt, or adding salt to your horse’s meal. A white salt block or preferably, a natural salt rock, will help, but many horses do not lick them adequately. A full-sized horse requires at least one ounce (two level tablespoons) of salt each day for maintenance, providing 12 grams of sodium. This is true all year long, even during the coldest winter months. Heat, humidity, and exercise increase the horse’s need. Horses often will not eat extra salt, so consider syringing one ounce of salt mixed with some oil or flavored liquid after an hour of intense sweating, not to exceed 4 ounces per day. If your horse is working for several hours at a time, you can add an electrolyte supplement but it should be offered in addition to salt, to replace what is lost from perspiration. In order to prevent ulcers, always allow your horse to eat something before giving him salt or an electrolyte supplement. And never add electrolytes to a horse’s only water supply — this will interfere with water intake. Fresh, clean water should always be nearby. Juliet M. $65 Million for Equine Starts Development in 2018 In addition to divulging the project’s estimated price tag, David Wilson, BVMS, director of VMC facilities planning, said new construction and renovation of existing space will be phased-in over 10 years in eight projects: Livestock and Field Services Center

UC Davis Plans $508 Million Upgrade

Small Animal Hospital West Wing Community Practice and Surgery Equine Surgery and Critical Care Equine Isolation Unit “We have raised approximately $65 million from donors and foundations to launch the first phase, which is focused on the state-of-the-art Equine Performance Center, an advanced diagnostic imaging center for all animal species,” Dr. Wilson said. Additional funding will come from philanthropic partners while the university has lent infrastructure support costs to prepare the grounds and provide utilities, Wilson explained.

Initial groundbreaking is scheduled to begin in 2018.

Bursting at the Seams

The VMC already has state-ofthe-art medical equipment and some of the brightest minds in veterinary medicine, but the space “limited” and the facilities are “aging,” Wilson said. When it opened in 1970, the VMC was equipped to handle 3,000 animal patients a year, but the patient load in the last five years has grown 4 to 6 percent a year, Wilson said. The VMC saw its caseload go above 51,000 patients in 2015. “Our increase in caseload has been accommodated through modest and periodic expansions of the complex as resources were made available,” Wilson said, adding that this patchwork approach will no longer work. In 2015, UC Davis treated 41,000plus animals at its small animal clinic, another 6,000-plus were seen at the large animal clinic, more than 3,000 field service calls were made by UCD veterinary teams to farms and ranches to treat livestock and horses, and nearly 4,000 animals were seen

at a UC Davis satellite facility in San Diego. “The current building complex is not suitable to meet caseload demands or support student educational missions in the long-term,” Wilson said. He said the layout of the new VMC immediately accomplishes two things: centralizing functions and equipment that are commonly accessed for individual patient care, and the entries will be welcoming with clear paths for clients seeking emergency care and those with less urgent needs. “In both cases, we have paid attention to the experience of our patients and our clients, emphasizing the role of the human caregiver as a partner to our veterinarians and staff,” Wilson said. UC Davis sources said construction throughout the next 10 years will not impede the day-to-day operation of clinical services and patient care. “We will have the capacity to serve our expected growth in caseload and continue to provide state-of-the-art clinical care,” Wilson added.
