Jake Gorrell: Persistence pays off in the quest for NRCHA Futurity gold
On his quest to win the biggest trophy in the sport of reined cow horse, Jake Gorrell has taken care of the little things with the hope that one day, the big things would take care of themselves. That's exactly what happened last night in Fort Worth when Gorrell marked a composite score of 657.5 (214.5 herd/218 rein/225 fence) on Plain Catty to win the 2017 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Championship and $125,000. Bet Hes Black, owned by C Ranches Inc and ridden by Zane Davis marked a 654.5 to bank the $90,000 reserve champion's check. In Fort Worth, Gorrell knew he had a finals-type of horse if he could get him shown right. "I never know what it takes to win it. It's persistence, consistency and trying to stay in the game. Usually if I can get to the fence work okay - because that's probably my better event then I kind of have a shot sometimes," Gorrell said. Gorrell and Plain Catty, nicknamed "Sparky," had shown in the 2017 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Intermediate finals on Thursday, where they tied for third place to earn $12,000. With the hectic schedule, Gorrell let the stallion recuperate on Friday so that he'd be ready for the Open herd work Saturday morning. "He was a little fresh," said Gorrell who'd been expecting Plain Catty to be tired. "He was a little more horse than I thought at first, but then he

Gorrell and Plain Catty, nicknamed “Sparky, chilled back down." Gorrell and Plain Catty marked a 214.5 in the herd work which was won with a 221 by Myles Brown and Miss Scarlets Cat (Metallic Cat x Bee Miss Scarlet x Lenas Busy Bee). "I'd hoped to do better, because without having to go make 225's (in the fence work), you've got to be better than a 14," Gorrell said of his score. "I was kind of bummed about it, but it was all right, so I thought that I'd keep going at it to see how high up
the ladder we could get." In the reining, which was won by Bet Hes Black and Davis with a 223, Plain Catty used his signature stops and good circles to mark a 218. While that run put them back into contention for the top spot, Gorrell knew that he'd have to score big in the cow work if he wanted the win. But he also knew that trying to force the run wouldn't work out. "When the cow came out, he was a lot of cow," Gorrell said. "He was coming at me and he was not an easy cow to read. I kept trying to settle him down and I was even telling him, 'easy, easy, settle down'. I never really got the feel on him like I would on a normal cow, but I wasn't going to get it so I thought, 'let's go, let's see what happens' and man, he took the turns on the fence great." After the first turn, Gorrell knew he had a shot at getting a big score but then, after his second turn, he questione "I had a bit of hesitation and then I thought, 'screw it, let's just go'," said Gorrell who went on to mark the highest cow work score of the night, a 225. "I turned him loose, and it worked."

Plain Catty (Bet Hesa Cat x Miss Plain Plain x Just Plain Colonel) was ridden throughout his two-yearold year by Mark Luis. He was put through last year's NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Sale but was then taken home again by his breeder/owner Kevin Cantrelle. The colt went to Gorrell after that. "He's a rancher, he's a horseman, he's got a really good eye for a horse and he's got really good horses," Gorrell said of Cantrelle. "He's got a knack at having nice horses. And Mark did an awesome job with this horse. He's the brokest two-year-old I've ever had, so he was easy. I just kept stepping him up a little bit all the time." For Gorrell, who is sponsored by LMF Horse Feeds, Eagle Valley Animal Bedding and Stray Dog Saddles, this win belongs to his wife Sonia, as much as it does him. "My wife is beautiful and she's wonderful. She's worked her butt off here for me this last couple of days. It's been a chaotic three years for us, personally and business-wise. We put our heads down and struggled through it, and this will give us a little relief." The reserve champion, Bet Hes Black (Bet Hesa Cat x Soula Jule Forever x Sola Jule Star), battled a minor illness during the preliminary rounds at the Snaffle Bit Futurity. Trainer Zane Davis felt that the stallion didn't return to his usual form until mid-way through the herd work finals. "I knew if I could get him back that I'd have a chance to win," said Davis, "so I am extremely happy with this." Bet Hes Black has been in Davis's training program since he was a yearling, when owner Billie Filippini's son, Johnny, picked him out at the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Select Yearling Sale. "He came and asked how much he should pay for the horse, and I said, 'Don't bid over 15 thousand' and he bought him for 50 so I'm glad he didn't listen to me," Davis said. "This is a special horse. From the time we got him you could tell he was going to be a champion. He always looked the part, he could do everything and when he steps in the arena everyone knows who he is - it's unusual for a horse to have that much presence. He's got athletic ability and try and everything else you need."

The Town Tamer The lawmen who policed the Kansas cowtowns were a special breed of cat. They had to be. Wild Bill had many attempts on his life when he was a lawman in Hays City, Kansas (he was appointed sheriff of Ellis County, Kansas on August 23, 1869). He escaped several assassination attempts and became very cautious when patrolling the streets of the roaring cowtown. He avoided the sidewalks and especially the dark alleys. He allowed no one to get too close, or to approach from the rear. He took to walking down the center of North Main Street, eyes scanning the saloons for potential trouble.

“Colorado” Charlie Utter According to Wild Bill expert and author, Joseph Rosa, we have to take this drawing of Charlie (also styled as Charley) Utter “with reservation.” He doesn’t explain, but I assume there is some doubt about it actually being our boy. It was drawn by Janet Lange and published in 1869 in the French magazine Le Tour du Monde (Tour of The World?). This is really early—1869—and predates Buffalo Bill Cody’s European tours by a dozen years, or so. Utter evidently grew up in Illinois but moved to Colorado to become a trapper and guide. He was known to be a fastidious dresser and insisted on bathing every day (almost unheard of in the trapper-scout fraternity). He was also a close friend of Hickok’s and it was Charlie who arranged for Wild Bill’s funeral and paid for the plot.
“If it’s true that legend is truth exaggerated to make a better story, then one of the things we historians do best is to ruin a good story.” —Bob Boze Bell
Pre-orders being taken!
Was Hickok Going Blind? By 1876, the legendary Wild Bill was in the dumps. His lawing days were over since he shot and killed his friend and deputy, Mike Williams, by mistake. That was in 1871. He hated the fakery of show business, that was in 1874, and now, in Cheyenne he was arrested for vagrancy. To make matters worse, the rough and ready West of his youth was fading right before his eyes, and, by this time even his eyes were not doing that well. Some sources claim Wild Bill traveled from Cheyenne to Kansas City to undergo eye treatment from Dr. Joshua Thorne. One report claims Hickok had “opthalmia” which is a condition induced by exposure to toxic chemicals. Another report claims Hickok was suffering from glaucoma. According to Joseph Rosa, the go to guy on all things Hickok, most modern day experts concur that Bill most likely was suffering from trachoma. No matter which eye ailment Hickok had, it could not have been comforting, especially for an aging gunfighter who depended on his eyesight to shoot straight. An eyewitness who saw him in Cheyenne reported that “he is a trifle pale now, because of a recent illness.”

from the previous page Ira supported Corbie by working at the pet shop, doing leatherwork, and riding horses at the auction on Wednesdays and Thursdays in Brooklyn and New Jersey. As he got older he would go to the auctions with his riding friends who could drive. They had a truck and a trailer and off they’d go on the weekends to swap and trade horses.
Working at the pet store, Ira learned everything he could about the birds and all kinds of animals. Pets may have been his livelihood, but for the teenager, horses were always in his heart. It was a real change in lifestyle for a kid in the Queens to have a horse. First, nobody had a horse, and secondly, it required work after school each day. He hitchhiked to the barn to feed and care for his new best friend. Rain or shine, he made the trek and learned first-hand the responsibility of owning a horse. He rode every chance he got. Little did anyone know that this kid from the city would, in time, learn to ride-like-the-wind as he crisscrossed freeways galloping around the countryside surrounding New York City. By the time he graduated from high school, Ira was what one might call horse-crazy. Besides his job at the pet store, he had been swapping tack, and riding horses at the auction. So, before finding a real job, he committed to give lessons at a summer camp. When it came Ira’s “Little Tack Shop” time to go, they were short room in the trailer, so other instructors at the summer camp outside New York City, stiffed him, and failed to haul his horse to the site. Not to be deterred, he cowboyed-up and rode his horse cross-city, through the freeway’s embankments and out into the suburbia and then the rural landscape surroundings of the camp. Along the way, his Uncle had promised to lay him and his horse up for the night. But, when his Aunt saw the horse in the backyard she let out a scream and a holler that in no way was he spending the night. So, his Uncle quietly slipped him twenty-dollars and off into the night he rode with rain beginning to fall. As they ventured deeper into the darkness, the rain transformed into a storm and he and his horse sought refuge in an open garage at a home along a quiet street. To his surprise, he discovered there a hammock and seized the opportunity to sleep soundly with his horse tied to the swing. That is until he heard a loud shout of the startled homeowner who awakened in the early morning and 16 16
discovered unexpected guests. A startled Ira jumped up stumbled into the saddle and was gone, leaving behind a bewildered guy in his robe. A few years later Ira was facing the needs of a young adult, and at 22, was attempting to be a city slicker and work in NYC. The year was 1953 and the job market was tough. After paying $275 (a fortune back then) to an employment agency, the job they got him was with a company that quickly went under. Undaunted, and unwilling to spend his last few dollars on another job-service, he bought a donkey instead for $50, and rode it into Times Square dressed in a suit and continued riding down 7th Avenue to Macys. Ira explains, “Figured it would get me some attention. I had called every wire service in town, and the following day there was a quarter page story in the Herald Tribune and other New York papers. It worked! The following day I had a job. Those were tough times and there were few jobs. I had to do something. Opportunity wasn’t just coming my way so I bought a donkey, caused a scene and got a job.” That’s the lesson Ira learned early and applied it often in life - make it happen, don’t wait for opportunity to come your way. Ira did pretty well at shirt and tie jobs, but it wasn’t for him, and soon his love of horses enticed him into working at running dude-strings. He loved the job. Ira was a natural in the saddle, and could ride just about anything. Yet, horsemanship skills alone were not enough to take Ira where he wanted to go. This was the mid 1950s, a time when people gathered to share ideas and good times. He yearned for the sense of community he witnessed within the horse world, and needed to be part of it. Of course to have horses in the northeast, even back then, was an expensive hobby to indulge in. To get in the game, Ira found himself at gatherings, entertaining friends with song, and dance and all-around good times. He discovered he fit right in, just being himself, and his circle of friends grew. Soon he was selling horse tack as a way to make an extra buck. Ira had discovered he could buy a headstall for $10 and sell it for $65. That was a profit he had never heard of, or earned in a day working on the dude-string. In 1959, when he was 22, Ira headed to Texas. The “Yankee”, as he became known, gained a quick reputation as not just a great salesman but for a man with a real good eye for horses. Back then a new horse trailer was $500, and Ira sold a 2-horse Lineville that Sam Miley, the dealer, had been trying to sell for 3 years. The trailer dealer hollered at Ira, “How did you get that fella to buy that trailer? He’s the biggest tight-wad in the county!” To which Ira replied, “Well, he didn’t have a trailer, and
NOVEMBER NOVEMBER 2017 2017
I knew he had to take two horses to North Carolina.” There again was the lesson Ira would apply throughout his life, as he says, “You have to make things happen; you make opportunities happen.” By 1965 he returned to the east coast and had a little tack store on wheels, which he took to local horse shows. In time it grew, as did his customer list in the horse world. The tack business was good for Ira and he started to make a lot of money. He had financial security for the first time in his life, and enjoyed the nomadic lifestyle of traveling to the shows with his wheeled tack store set-up. There he sold to exhibitors, friends and the horse community across New England and, over time, much of the east coast. For Ira, if not for his ability to sing and entertain, he would not have been embraced into the social circles to which he would first sell tack and later sell horses. Selling tack was profitable, but when Ira invested in his first horse, just to resell it, he became intrigued. Ira explains, “Hey, when you’re young, imagine I bought this horse for $500 and sold it right away for $3,000, and they loved the horse. Come-on it was the mid 1960’s you didn’t see money like that.” It was right about then that he crossed paths with a young man right out of college who wanted to buy and sell horses. His name was David Hopper. The two started working together buying and selling horses and in 1966, the Longreen Farm was started. Ira and David developed a working relationship that resulted in selling horses for good money for nearly 30 years. It was a process that worked. Ira found the horses, and David sold them. A lot of folks in the horse world already knew Ira had a keen eye for horses, and trusted his judgment. The business of buying and selling horses took off. Soon, Ira discovered he would have to choose between his tack business and the horse business. From a business perspective, Ira recalls, he should have stayed in the tack business. He was consulting for a couple that had a large tack production company, and no heirs. Ira was first in line to inherit the business from his close friends. But it was the 1960s and the lure of the road and the search for great horses was just too much for him to pass up. For six years he traveled, buying horses and shipping them back to New York where David would sell them. Yet, the lure of the west still lingered in Ira and by 1972, “Yankee” was headed to Arizona to headquarter his operations and search for more horses. Dealing almost exclusively with thoroughbreds, he had become an expert within the breed for recognizing the coming of age. In Arizona, the 1970s was a rootin-tootin good time, and Ira spent more than his fair share of it with drink and friends. “If it wasn’t for entertaining folks and participating at the shows, acting as auctioneer and stuff like that, I would not have made it. Sure, I had the money to buy horses and yes I’ve had great success picking winners, and a lot of not so good too. Yet, it’s the people you know, people you meet at the shows and events that made my business.” He adds, “The internet has changed all that. Now people just buy something online. They may not have even seen, much less ridden.”
To find the best horses Ira traveled to auctions and racetracks across North America, and when in Arizona he spent Saturdays at the Pacific Livestock Auction. There he would bid against the killers to buy horses. Back in the 1970s, truckloads of horses appeared and disappeared through PLA. It was a place, like none other, first on Baseline road during the 60s and 70s and then later on the Gila reservation. PLA was a world unto itself one had to enter to understand. Several of the characters there, every Saturday, bought for the slaughterhouses. The bigger the horse the higher the price per pound they paid. Ira took great risk weeding out which horses he would snatch from the grasp of the killers. “Yeah, they had a horse butchering plant called Golden West, out in the west side of the Valley. A certain fella bought everything he could for that plant, he was the type of guy who would pretend to be your friend, but really weren’t.” He adds, “Now there is no auction, and I have nothing to do on Saturdays. The killer market is still there but now there is no way to see and save those good horses. You can’t compete, raise your hand with a bid and save those horses. It’s a sad outcome, the auction was an opportunity to save a lot of those horses.” Ira continues, “I specialized in thoroughbreds and sold a countless number, then one day the world changed. The hunter jumper and dressage crowds discovered warmbloods, and it was like turning off the lights and my days of prosperity turned into darkness. It was tough, and then came a man named Andrew Popiel who built a magnificent eventing course and barn called Trojan, just south of Cave Creek. It changed my life.” While warmbloods had suddenly become vogue in the hunter jumper scene, thoroughbreds still excelled at three-day-eventing. Once again, Ira seized the opportunity as high-end equestrians from across America came to ride and compete at Trojan. The cross-country course Andrew built was outstanding and the giant wooden barn rivaled anything ever seen in Arizona. It even had a manure system driven by a chain-drive that transported manure out of the building from the back of each spacious stall. Those big wooden stalls were to die for and all the event riders loved Trojan. It flourished for years and then it all came to a horrific end when the Trojan Barn burned lighting the night for miles in a raging blaze that left only ash. Yet, in it’s day Trojan was Ira’s ace-in-the-hole. “Eventing was for me not just for the horses but the excitement, the challenge. For the Olympics that is the reality. You can take a green horse in eventing, still find the unknown, that special horse, and turn it into a world-class competitor. You can still do that in eventing, that’s the excitement, the opportunity. “One year, I had 5 thoroughbred horses in the ‘Invitational’ the most prestigious jumper event at the time. Through the years Hopper and myself have some of the best hunter jumper and event horses in the country, and all the best of those horses came off a racetrack” says Ira. “And, Chris Coleman! Where would we be in the hunter jumper world in Arizona without Chris Coleman? He takes greater risks, then reasonable, to put on the shows. The whole thing would collapse without Chris Coleman, he is very important and under appreciated.” His mind, still sharp, Ira’s edgy humor comes thru load and clear that he can tell it like it is.

Without support both ways, what is there?” Like most great horseman his best days in the saddle came to an end with a crash when during a period of personal hardship he galloped a horse, under the influence, through a big jump from the wrong direction. “We ride, we live, we make mistakes. I jumped the horse like a real nut case, it happened.” Ira’s had a long-list of great horses including Zanger, a Dutch Warmblood (M. Graf Gothard x Kitty) who, ridden by Kathy Adams, earned the 1987 USET Horse of the Year Level 2 Award. That was accomplished after winning everything on the west coast dressage circuit two years in a row. Then Zanger went on to the Pan American Games. His horses were in many championships and won prizes. Ira’s home is draped with ribbons and adorned with trophies, amongst the silver trays and bronzes all depicting a time and a place where he won-it-all, or almost. “I’ve had a great ride and the people, the horses I’ve known, and the tales that we tell when we still speak on the phone or meet up are about the good times.” Ira had just returned to the ranch from Lexington, Kentucky, where his friends and admirers awarded him the lifetime achievement award he so honorably deserves. “It was unexpected, who knew, and I’m honored the Retired Race Horse Project folks felt I was deserving of such an honor. To be recognized by such a group is something I will always cherish.” concludes Ira.

Tammy Jo Hays Wins Snaffle Bit Futurity Discount Tire Non Pro Championship
Tammy Jo Hays collected her third NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Non Pro Championship last night when she marked a composite score of 650 on Hat Six Keep Sparkin to win $20,359. As the second to last rider out in the cow work of the 17 Non Pro finalist, Hays had to give it every thing she had to get by the eventual reserve champion, Laurie Richards, who had a composite score of 649.5. Richards and her mount Glitter N Glam won $12,528 for being second.
Having watched the cattle and seeing that they had a lot of gas, Hays and her trainer/husband Shawn Hays, developed a tactical plan that involved holding the cow at the end of the pen in the boxing, so that her gelding wouldn't run out of air once they got going down the fence. "That went according to plan," said Hays whose 221 in the cow work was the highest score of the night. "The cow set up around the corner good for me. It was just a really good cow-it read right. When I made that first turn, I'd been really schooling him
hard on coming clear around in that turn and I'd almost over-schooled him to where he stalled out for a second but after that, he never got away from that cow, he stayed with it the whole time. After that second turn and we started circling, I was just along for the ride." In the herd work that morning, Hays and "Tater" had a 212 to finish in the top five. Their run didn't get off to the best start when Hat Six Keep Sparkin didn't hook up with the cow as well as Hays would have liked. On their next two cows, the big gelding

was tied in tight. "I'm so delighted with him because from that second cow on, he did everything according to plan for me," said Hays who went on to be second in the reining with a 217. " Earlier in the year, Hat Six Keep Sparkin (Dual Spark x Hat Six Little Paws x Peptos Stylish Oak), who was bred by Hays's parents Walter and Jocelyn Greeman, wasn't one of her favorite horses. He finally earned her affection a few weeks prior to the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity. "He was kind of heavy and he was hard for me to ride because he pulled too hard. My husband, Shawn, rode him a bunch for me and then Robert Smith came to work for us in May, and when Shawn didn't have much time because he had his horses to get ready, Robert took him over and got him over some humps for me," Hays said. "When I got back on him I liked him a lot better. Through the summer, Shawn rode him down the fence and got him more solid and working to the point where I could get on and do some of the work myself." It was at the Southwest RCHA PreFuturity in Fort Worth, which Hays won, that she really started to like Hat Six Keep Sparkin. "He just started being with me and we started having runs like that (one we had tonight) down the fence," Hays recalled. "I told my husband, 'I think he might be the better horse.'" Hays was the Non Pro Snaffle Bit Futurity champion in 2013 and 2014. She says that none of her wins would have been possible without Shawn. "He's always there supporting me and nobody roots louder for me. I can't do this without him."

An Outlaw and a Lady: A Memoir of Music, Life with Waylon,
Renowned songwriter, singer, and wife of Waylon Jennings writes an intimate, enormously entertaining memoir of American music, of life with Waylon and the Outlaws, and of faith lost and found. The daughter of a Pentecostal evangelist and a race-car driver, Jessi Colter played piano and sang in church before leaving Arizona to tour with rock-n-roll pioneer Duane Eddy, whom she married. Colter became a successful recording artist, appearing on American Bandstand and befriend-
and the Faith that Brought Me Home ing stars such as the Everly Brothers and Chet Atkins, while her songs were recorded by Nancy Sinatra, Dottie West, and others. Her marriage to Eddy didn’t last, however, and in 1969 she married the electrifying Waylon Jennings. Together, they made their home in Nashville which in the 1970s, was ground zero for roots music, drawing Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristof-
ferson, Shel Silverstein, and others to the Nashville Sound. And Jessi was at the center of it all, the only woman on the landmark Wanted: The Outlaws album, the record that launched the Outlaw Country genre and was the first country album to go platinum. She also tasted personal commercial success with the #1-single “I’m Not Lisa.”

But offstage, life was a challenge, as Waylon pursued his addictions and battled his demons. Having drifted from the church as a young woman, Jessi returned to her faith and found in it a source of strength in the turmoil of living with Waylon. In the 1980s, Waylon helped launch the super group The Highwaymen with Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson, and the hits kept rolling, as did Waylon’s reckless living. Amid it all, Jessi faithfully prayed for her husband until finally, at Thanksgiving 2001, Waylon found Jesus, just months before he died. An Outlaw and a Lady is a powerful story of American music, of love in the midst of heartache, and of faith that sustains.

The Grammar Geek, The Tipsy Turkey, The Sheep are waking up…..
ALRIGHT DAG-NAB-ITTT….. I’ve had enough! You???? If it’s not one thing, it’s another…. This World is going to hell in a hen basket!! Log has rolled…. Go spit!! Jesus is coming Ya’ll….. Some of you just murmured underneath your breath, “What the HELL is taking him so long” BAHAHAHA… (YES….. That was a joke!!!) Then all of a sudden I hear this, “SHOOOOSHHHHhhh”… “LEGLER”!!!!!!!!! I looked around and I’m like, By Justin “WHAT”???!! If any of you know us Legler men, we’re famous for that word when we’re uncomfortable, or have NO IDEA who’s just yelled at us… WHAT????!!! LOL… This little fictitious dude pops out of nowhere and just lands on my shoulder…. You know I’m a pretty level headed guy, but I couldn’t help it… I looked down at this little guy, and all that I could get to come out of my mouth was, COOL…. GIGGLE GIGGLE…. LOL… I couldn’t help it… I could immediately tell, he was completely disgusted with me… So, I stop for a minute and look down at him again, WHAT?????!!!! LOL… “Mr. Legler…… I’m your Grammar Conscious”… I’m sitting there still looking at him like a whipped pup, “You’re my what???” He replies again, “Your Grammar Conscious”… I motion my head closer to him and said it like a smartass, “I don’t even know what that is!!!” He replies, “Figures…. I’m here to correct your grammar so all these people can understand you… Again, in a smartass way, “Alrite”… He screams at me, “It’s not alrite, it’s ALL RIGHT… Dammitt is, DAMN IT!! Hen is HANDBASKET…. Log rolled, go spit??? Well, that’s just stupid…” Blown away thinking to myself looking at this little guy, “Man, who just ruined your cheerios??” He goes off again saying, “It wasn’t me ranting” … I looked down at him again and said, “Well if you would have let me finish…. I was just mad because my pumpkins mooshed out 2 days after I carved them, and they didn’t even make Halloween… I was going to yell out but decided against, GLOBAL WARMING…. LOL.. Hello everyone!!! Hope you and your kids (if you got them) enjoyed Halloween… Justin here @ Imperial! Welcome to November… The month of the TURKEY! Who’s ready from some yard bird???? I know I am…. It’s one of my favorite meals…. I don’t even own a turkey, but I got one…. Heard him squakin this morning…. Gobble Gobble… Gobble Gobble…. Open the door, and there he was!! Got his darn head buried in one of them smoosh pumpkins… He hears me, and pops his head out... Then he proceeds to turn his head, and look at me with that one eye like you know they do… By God if that bird doesn’t just start laughin… I’m like, Turkey… Your drunk aren’t you Turkey?? Had a little too much of that fermented pumpkin didn’t you?? He stops and looks at me again, WHAT??? BAHAHA…. Well l decided to let him enjoy himself because I knew…. He’d keep it up just like any seasoned person would do, that thought they could hold their liquor like they use to... Yep, he ate until he passed out… I walked over there, and threw his drunk Turkey butt into my back yard... BUT...., not before I hung a sign on him that said, I’m the collusionist, signed Hillary Clinton….. BAHAHAHAHA…. You knew that was coming and I got more, but you got to stay with me…. Best part of this bird story is, I seen him looking at it trying to figure, what the heck… So I proceeded to throw salt in the wound, “How you feel Dumbass”??? LOL… Happy Thanksgiving everyone! October is always just a little taste, of what’s in store for Imperial this Winter…. Busy month!! Sold more trailers in October than the last three combined… High fives all around… YEAH!!!! We can pay our bills this month LOL…. Had a few more Frontiers roll in and our newest line of dumps, Iron Bull….. Biggest attention drawer we got in, is a 17’ Cimarron LQ slide out show demo we’re helping a dealer / friend / customer unload…. Nothing like this has been on Imperial’s yard since…. Well it’s been a while… If you like huge bling bling rides with every damn thing underneath the sun in it, well trust me!!! This is your trailer… See it on our Facebook page Imperial Trailer Sales and Livestock Supply Inc, or make Imperialaz.com a favorite on your browser! Beau and the trailer technicians got a little jolt in October with what they possibly could be seeing after the pre-arrivals of snowbirds showing up… I believe I seen Beau wheeling around the corner with a bull whip in his mouth…. I told you, that wheelchair don’t slow that man down… I decided to take cover myself… No seriously, our welcomed snowbird customers are popping in and of course, it’s never on a small trip the trailer has issues…. It’s on the long trip to get out of the snow, loaded after being on the highway already 16 hours… Screw it Judy!! Keep going!! We’ll fix it when we get there… Yeah!!! They’re busy putting trailers back together… Get them in here… Beau and crew will get you
handled! Even if you thought you just heard something…. Better safe than sorry! Got a 14 ply tire Gladiator is selling to Imperial for only $2.00 more than a 12 ply for the month of October.. WHAT???? Yeah!! Call Beau…. Our construction / manufacturing side picked up 4 projects alone in October…. That said, I’ve hired John Williams to help me sell, and get customers the prompt attention they deserve going into the Winter months… Some of you already know John! He worked at Shoppers Legler Supply and @ Tractor Supply when they first hit the Valley… Well now he’s wearing a barn salesman hat! Swing in and say “Hi”, or follow us on our other Facebook page “Imperial Enterprise Inc”… Specials we run only in the Bridle and Bit, you can also find there, or at Imperialbarns.com… Occasionally Craigslist! SNOWBIRDS, WELCOME!!! Need a Barn, Fencing, Arena, Steel Building??? Call John! Alright…. Without further ado, and yes it’s ado nerd boy.. “Adieu” is French for goodbye, and ado is without fuss… EEHHHYYY… Don’t ever judge a book by its cover even though it says, “Politics By A Dumb Cowboy”…. Same with the proud citizens of this GREAT NATION…. Now if we were wearing the drunk Turkey sign, had the name that was on that sign, wore the feminist outfits that displayed something as Major Kelly said, “Use to be considered SACRED!!!”, then maybe… Maybe if we were these overpaid athletes, that just got an education on customer service, and who their customer base really is…. Then maybe again!!. Last but surely not least, the titty baby at Berkley, or a school similar who has never worked a day in their life… Yeah…. Your struggle is real, now go wipe your ass!!… Can you believe it???? I still can’t…. I mean, I knew Hillary Clinton was corrupt, and the DNC would do anything to beat Trump, but to start a collusion with a fake Dossier, then point fingers at the smartest Commander and Chief this Country has ever seen….. STUPID!!!! Then think, they would never get caught…. WOW!!!! They really did think we were sheep!!! Didn’t cover up the dots too well, did ya…. HEY!!!! Special Counselor Robert Mueller which BTW, useed to be “Former Director of the FBI”… Where were you on that one?? OOhh yeah… Probing the Dossier on Trump – Russia collusion which they hired him to do, or cover up! How about the Clinton’s trying to sell our Uranium to Russia... Sure trusting our FEDS / FBI right now aren’t we… Especially after ole lime light, James Comey and Hilary’s email scandal... Hummmmmm…..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you’re still not seeing, COME ON!!! WAKE UP!!! A lot more are waking up!! Want proof?? The cover of the book to the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is made up of level headed, hardworking, tax paying citizens to a corrupt government, non-titty baby millennials, who have seen enough!!! Even with ALL the corruptness in this Country, “WE” still managed to vote the man in that’s gonna go down in the History books, as one of the best Presidents this Country has ever seen…. Mark my words!! Not the first time I’ve said either…. Want more proof… Just look!! The flies are starting to drop… It took some time, but it’s FINALLY starting to happen… Flake, Murphy, Mueller, Tiberi..... Yeah…. ALL GOP’s….. Still corrupt… I hate to say it, but I have a feeling Vegas is going to be the next collusion…. Nothing makes sense about that whole incident either, now does it!!! NOTHING... The secrecy.... I can tell you this, Trump and the people I just mention wasn’t behind that one either…. Maybe I’m starting to become a conspirator, or am I... Jason Aldean said it best, “They’re not going to stop us!!” Mr Trump…. Keep it up and Good Play!!! GOOD PLAY!!!! YOU ARE DOING IT!!! Keep doing it!!! Despite what the news says, or the left…. “WE THE PEOPLE” are behind you…. At least the ones who aren’t living in a fairy tale world, and not in their parent’s basements.. NEXT, bring back moral values that our founding fathers instilled on this great nation… MOST of us still live by them and want them back…. 1. In God We Trust 2. Pledge of Allegiance back in Schools and before Sports 3. Fly Old Glory everywhere and Stand Proudly 4. Be that Neighbor 5. Love Little steps…. KEEP DRAINING THE SWAMP!!! As always, thanks for reading! #Keepgoing #Bepositive #Showsomedamnlove #Hugyourkids #Standupforourflag #Standtogether #Trump

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - Heading into the RAM Turquoise Circuit Finals, bull rider Joseph Vazquez simply wanted to cover a bull and see where the momentum carried him. Vazquez not only found what he craved, but he’s still digesting the biggest win of his young rodeo career. With a two-head score of 169.5 points, Vazquez was the only bull rider at the Turquoise Circuit Finals to qualify for two rides. With two round wins and ground money included, Vazquez was the recipient of $8,882. “It’s really exciting,” said Vazquez, 28. “It’s been three years coming. This third year it finally happened, so that’s really cool.” No cowboy rode to the whistle in the first round of the Turquoise Circuit Finals, enabling Vazquez to take advantage of the opening. Drawing Honeycutt Rodeo’s Crop Hopper in the second round, Vazquez topped the bull for a weekend-best 88 points, followed by a clinching ride of 81.5 points atop Salt River Rodeo's Rio's Jagged Edge in Saturday’s final performance. “I wanted to win some rounds,” Vazquez explained. “I wanted to stay on at least one bull. That first bull I got on, I lost my rope at right about seven seconds, and I was just fired up

for the rest of the weekend. In round three, everybody fell off and I was the last guy out, and I told myself I was gonna ride him just because I’d already won it. “I went two-for-three and that’s a pretty cool deal.” More than doubling his circuit total for the 2017 season at the Turquoise Circuit Finals, Vazquez says he’ll be able to put some money away for his
daughter, Ellie, and provide some financial security for his family. “What this money did was kind of give me a cushion and allow me to put some money back in case something were to happen to me," he said. "If any emergency were to come up, I have some money put back and can make sure she’s well taken care of. On my side of the family, we’re all happy, happy, happy over here.”
NOVEMBER 2017
Vazquez’s bull riding career began at 18 years-old, and according to the Alamogordo, N.M., native, his game is mostly self-taught. Now, with admittance to next year’s RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo, Vazquez hopes to see how far his natural bull riding skills can take him in Kissimmee, Fla. “Just qualifying for the circuit finals was a big deal for me," he said. "You know how goals progress, you get somewhere and you look higher. I”m on a path. “Pretty much the metaphor for rodeo, for me, is kind of the metaphor for life. The more you give it, the more it will give you back.” Other winners at the $179,087 rodeo were bareback rider Kyle Charley (237.5 points on three head), steer wrestler Jace Melvin (15.7 seconds on three head), team ropers Brady Payne/ Junior Zambrano II (22.5 seconds on three head), saddle bronc rider Leon Fountain (237 points on three head), tie-down roper Seth Hall (28.7 seconds on three head), barrel racer Lori Todd (46.08 seconds on three runs), and steer roper Corey Ross (27.2 seconds on two head). Indeed, female power will be on full display throughout the event including on Saturday, November 11th when Melissa Ganzi leads her Aspen Valley Polo Club team that includes Ashley Busch and Hall of Famer Mike Azzaro versus the first time visitors from Monte Carlo. Then, watch the Women’s Sunset Polo Match to conclude a day that will include some of the best female polo players in the country. And that takes us to Sunday when the first match of the day at 11:30a.m. honors the greatest female polo player of all time, Sunny Hale, who passed away earlier this year. We were honored she played in our event twice, including the inaugural “Battle of the Sexes” match that will be replayed to celebrate her life. Polo is one of few sports where men and women compete together, and equally, something our event celebrates on the field, and off. So come celebrate with us. On Saturday, Sunday or both. The World’s Greatest Polo Party awaits November 11th and 12th at WestWorld of Scottsdale. For all tickets, tables and tent information please go to www.ThePoloParty.com.

Ari-Anna Flynn Charleston, Ark. $64,894 Colorado Springs, Colorado—The first day of October is fraught with emotions for all of pro rodeo’s full time competitors. The season is done and the positions at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) are set—there are no more runs to make or miles to drive. For the ladies of the WPRA who spent the last month on the bubble, chasing the WNFR dream, Sunday meant finally a day to rest. For some, it was filled with relief and joy; for others, it brought disappointment. In 2017 the fans of pro barrel racing were treated to an amazing display of horsepower and riding ability, coupled beautifully with graciousness and camaraderie. While only 15 are 60
making plans for Vegas in just over two months time, probably ten more could easily have been in those spots. In the final week alone, the bubble cowgirls all rose to the test. Ivy Conrado grabbed a nice check in Pasadena (TX) to hold the wolves at bay. Ari-Anna Flynn won second on her two final runs in Texas, though she wasn’t able to close the gap from 20th. Likewise, Jana Bean—a veteran of previous bubble battles—went down swinging, winning Las Cruces (NM) on the final night of the season to end the last week with more than $2,000 earned. Emily Miller sat inside the top 15 nearly all season but was derailed by horse injuries. She got back on her own steed for the final run in Kansas City and clinched a big fourth place check. Miller might have gone on in the fight but her next event, New Braunfels, was postponed due to conditions from inclement weather. Instead, she gracefully called it a year. Four-time WPRA World Champion Sherry Cervi was inside the fray, too. Traveling from California to Texas to Missouri in four days, she too bumped into the unfortunate postponement at New Braunfels. Unable to compete in the rescheduled performance, she went on to New Mexico instead, leaving that rodeo winning first and wondering if she could earn enough on the final day to make her record setting 20th WNFR. But in the end, it was a gritty performance by Kimmie Wall and her tough mare Foxy that won the hour. After a hugely successful first trip to the WNFR in 2016, Wall seemed destined to return. But an illness at the worst time of the season put that trip in doubt. She held her breath and took a week off before the Pendleton Round-Up, rewarded for the move with a huge win to move back into the top 15. Wall and Foxy traveled from California to Kansas City, leaving placing at the American Royal Rodeo but lower than her two closest competitors, Cervi and Miller. Her ace in the hole was the Wrangler Champions Challenge Finale in Sioux Falls, S.D. With her entire season on the line, Wall claimed a third place check on the opening night, a $2,204 life preserver keeping her afloat in the race. Though she did not place the next night, that check along with a $270 for 9th in Kansas City secured her trip to Vegas just under $2,000 ($1,931 to be exact) ahead of the WPRA’s all-
time earnings leader, Cervi. With the close of Saturday night performance in Las Cruces, the final rodeo of the regular season which impacted the standings, Conrado and Wall could relax and rejoice, joining the field for the 2017 WNFR as the 14th and 15th ranked cowgirls.
The Contenders Conrado and Wall are back for a second consecutive trip, joining other WNFR sophomores Stevi Hillman, Nellie Miller, Amberleigh Moore and Kassie Mowry. Ranked third, Miller makes her first trip since 2010 after big wins in Ellensburg, Reno and St Paul (OR) while Mowry returns for the first time since 2005. Mowry secured her qualification with huge wins at San Angelo, Houston and Nampa to land fifth in the standings. Moore comes back to the Thomas & Mack after an incredible rookie trip in 2016 in which she and mare Paige tied the arena record in Round Eight and set a new earnings mark at $187,692. She is sitting fourth. Hillman capped her phenomenal season with a win on Friday in South Dakota and a split of second on Saturday aboard her big bay gelding Truck. She won $6,554 on the final weekend of 2017, pushing her season total to $185,952. That is the third best regular season in WPRA history but comes in the same season as Tiany Schuster’s record smashing year so Hillman comes to Vegas ranked second. Schuster leads a class of six WNFR rookies after earning more than a quarter of a million dollars during the 2017 season. Schuster grabbed the standings lead in late October 2016 and never relinquished it. After tying for second at the Ram National Circuit Finals in early April, Schuster broke over $100,000 and she surpassed $200,000 after winning the famed Calgary Stampede in early July. She carries a lead of $64,425 into Las Vegas. Joining Schuster in their inaugural WNFR’s are Dr. Kathy Grimes (6th), Hailey Kinsel (7th), Taci Bettis (8th), Tillar Murray (12th) and Kellie Collier (13th). Grimes is a veterinarian who has specialized in embryo transfers during her career and raised both her horses, Izzy and Ruby; she streaked to her first WNFR after finishing second at major winter rodeos in Fort Worth, San Antonio and Houston. Kinsel capped her breakout season, in which she won the non-sanctioned
NOVEMBER 2017
The American for a share of $1 million in February and the College National Finals Rodeo in June by winning a gold medal at the Komatsu Equipment Days of '47 Cowboy Games & Rodeo in Salt Lake City and $50,000. Bettis is a rookie in 2017 and clinched the title with the close of the regular season. She and her horse Smash won Buc Days in Corpus Christi in the spring and went on a tear over the summer after winning the final round at the Reno Rodeo. Murray and Collier used solid, steady performances all year to punch their tickets. Murray won Helldorado Days in Las Vegas in May, Wainwright, Alberta in June and the New Mexico State Fair Rodeo in Albuquerque in September. Meanwhile, Collier started 2017 with a bang winning Denver in January and her final rodeo of the year in Stephenville in September. New Mexico cowgirl Sydni Blanchard returns to the Finals ranked 11th after a three year absence, making her third qualification. Blanchard broke the bubble in mid-August after winning Canby (OR), Baker (MT), Douglas (WY), Hastings (NE) and Kennewick (WA) for a $22,000 twoweek run. The 2017 field is relatively new in WNFR experience with 21 qualifications amongst the thirteen ladies already mentioned. The two remaining top that number with 22 trips to Vegas between them. Brittany Pozzi-Tonozzi is returning for her 11th WNFR and first since 2013. The two-time World Champ and two-time WNFR average winner will be in Vegas with her good mares Steeley and Mona. Steeley competed here a year ago with Jana Bean. Lisa Lockhart returns for her 11th consecutive WNFR as the reigning average champ there. Riding both the great Louie and her young mare Rosa this season, Lockhart used a mid-summer push to get back to Las Vegas highlighted by wins in Lawton (OK)—where she set a new arena record—and Great Falls (MT). She is currently ninth in the WPRA World standings. Pozzi-Tonozzi and Lockhart move into a tie for third most WNFR qualifications in history joining Jimmie Munroe, Martha Josey, Deb Mohon and Sammie Thurman Brackenbury and trailing only Sherry Johnson, Kay Blandford and Mildred Farris (12 each) and Charmayne James and Sherry Cervi (19 each).

members who show. AzQHA holds three No-Bling shows each year. They are a wonderful way for new exhibitors to get the boots wet in the world of showing without the cost and pressure associated with a large Quarter Horse Circuit. They also offer the veteran showing enthusiast a great place to try a new discipline, practice with a newer horse or simply kick back and have fun. Most classes cost $13 or less to enter. All of the No-Bling shows have All-Breed classes and Versatility Ranch Horse classes along with AQHA classes. They include English and Western disciplines, along with trail, reining, roping and cow horse. Points earned at No-Bling shows count towards AzQHA year-end awards and AQHA national points. Cumulative points from the shows in the series are also tallied towards the special year-end awards. AzQHA Trail Challenges test the skill and communication of horse and rider as a team over a course of natural obstacles and ranch type activities such as log drags and trailer loading. $15,000 In Scholarship Money Awarded at Arizona Fall Championship
The Arizona Quarter Horse Association is passionate about youth and is committed to assisting future generations to rise up to the next level through education. The Ascent Scholarship Program, sponsored by Dr Joni Hegel, was established to be a mechanism to inspire youth to show in AQHA activities while simultaneously planning for their educational future. Participants must be an AzQHYA and Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) member and compete in at least one class at 2 of the 3 AzQHA No Bling shows to be eligible. Scholarship money earned by exhibitors is kept in a restricted account by the AzQHA, until they graduate from high school. Scholarships are then paid directly to the college, trade school or university that student attends. Over time, youth members can accumulate a

significant amount for their educa-
tional goals. The 2017 Arizona Fall Championship hosted two scholarship events on September 24 at West World in Scottsdale: an Interscholastic competition and the Joe and Suzy Jean Scholarship, an interview based selection process. Five $1,000 scholarships were awarded based on the interviews conducted at the AZFC. Applicants had to answer a series of questions in front of a 4 person panel. Interest exploded over this wonderful opportunity and 23 kids went through the process. Questions probed their current and future involvement in the equine industry, career goals, and how they have participated in community service and outreach to promote the Quarter Horse industry. AzQHA President and interview panelist Michele Pearson remarked that while many youth were undoubtedly nervous, they all were well prepared and conveyed
their stories admirably. A common theme emerged about how the youth had a transformative life lesson from working with horses. Pearson was very enthusiastic regarding this round of giving and the future of the scholarship program as a whole. Scholarship winners were Kaylee Hamm, Shandin Farrel, Kate Buchanan, Ariel Olvey and Quinn Eisenfeld. The AzQHA Interscholastic Competition offered classes in Horsemanship and Reining for different levels of experience. Trophies and ribbons were awarded and eligible riders were able to earn scholarship money. Horses were provided at the competition free of charge by volunteers and were drawn by exhibitors for each class. Each of the 10 classes at the AZFC show awarded $1,000 worth of Ascent Scholarship money for eligible youth. First place received $500, second got $300 and third place had $200 credited to their account. Most of the riders in the Interscholastic Competition were active members on IEA teams. IEA is a national organization that is open to public school, private school and barn teams for grades 6-12. The students compete at several shows within their state every year and can go to the Regionals or qualify for the National finals. Arizona has several coaches covering both english and western disciplines. The bulk of the teams are in the Phoenix metro area, and there is one Hunt Seat team in Tucson. IEA youth do not need to own a horse to join a team. Ben Balow, who's son Ben was riding in the competition, commented on the benefits of IEA to the horse industry. “It brings kids in to showing that may not otherwise have a chance to participate,” he explained. “They can go to a qualified trainer in their area and take lessons without owning a horse.” The program makes it more feasible for the general public to get
NOVEMBER 2017 NOVEMBER 2017
involved with horse showing. “The kids can set an achievable goal and pursue it without having to buy the real expensive horse.“ A good number of the kids find IEA is a launch pad for showing in AQHA or NRHA. Others pursue collegiate equine teams. “To me,” added Balow, “its invaluable to have this kind of program in your state.” Holly Hover has been a large supporter of IEA. At the conclusion of Sunday’s competition she commented, “I so appreciate the opportunity that Arizona Quarter Horse gave to all of these students. I know it was the focal point of their whole year.” She noted that parents, grand parents, aunts and uncles all came out to support their kids. Hover recognizes the long term benefits the program has on the horse industry. “In my group, I see about 20% attrition rate of kids going on to show at Quarter Horse shows.” She views it as Its the ideal opening to families who have interest, but have not had the opportunity to become involved with horses. She insisted, “It’s been a great outreach program” The donated horses come from a variety of backgrounds. Hover maintains a string of about 10 team horses. Some of them have been shown extensively and are now retired. Their owners understand the importance of having good quality, safe horses to ride and to inspire the next generation. Hover appreciates the diverse support IEA has garnered saying, “The Arizona community has been remarkable in helping with the program.” Arizona teams are welcoming new members. The IEA website, rideiea.org, has a map of all the team locations and participating trainers. AzQHA.org has information on Arizona Competitions as well as the Scholarships offered by AzQHA and AQHA.

principals of 'Light Hands Equitation'. 'I wanted to film this documentary, as I believe Steve Halfpenny's 'Light Hands Equitation' approach is missing in many areas of the horse world today', Elaine added. This statement is said in our serNate Brekken vice department on a daily basis. Can I get an oil change please? These words are more important than ever these days. With the newer emission legal trucks with (DPF’s) diesel particulate filters, this statement if more important than ever. Although your manufacturer of your diesel pickup will tell you that you can go ten thousand or more miles between oil changes, don’t believe it. Sure additive packages in the engine oil we use have come a long way since the 80’s and 90’s, however, your engine and the emissions components on the truck you drive have changed as well. So why do the manufacturers allow higher mile oil changes? Everyone is looking for the truck with the least amount of maintenance needed. In reality ALL of them need the same kind of maintenance. Here are some reasons why changing your oil more often will help you. 1. Less engine wear, which means your truck will last longer 2. Less frequent regens, your engine oil will be cleaner 3. Better fuel economy, use the oil your manufacturer recommends, synthetic oil is now the way to go. Dino oil should not be used due to more frequent regens and higher fuel usage. Here are some things that happen when you oil change intervals go for an extended length of time 1. More regens occur due to the engine oil being dirtier. FYI - your DPF can not burn off any engine oil. They are designed to burn off the soot produced from your diesel engine. 2. Over full crankcase - this happens when regens are not completed, and or happening more often due to dirty crankcase engine oil and other concerns. 3. Engine wear and tear - caused by the above concern, which means you may have expensive engine repairs in your future. There are more reasons to list for both, but hopefully this helps with the good and the bad. Strictly Diesel recommends oil change intervals at five thousand miles. Regardless of the year of your truck, this oil change interval will help YOU help your truck last longer, use less fuel, and keep a smile on your face while you use your truck for whatever it is you do. Let Strictly Diesel get your oil change done today! Give us a call at 623-582-4404, or visit our website strictlydieselrepair.com to get a hold of us.

I am a mother of three from Elizabethtown, KY. I am a graduate of the University of Kentucky. I worked in the country music industry in Nashville, TN, back in the 90’s but left to be a wife and a mother in Georgia. I returned to Kentucky in 2005. I ride and compete in Extreme Cowboy Racing with my three children, who are 18, 15 and 11. I have been honored to sing the National Anthem for the Extreme Cowboy Association’s National and World Championships on several occasions. I was honored as well to sing both the Canadian and American National Anthems at The Cowboy-Up Challenge at the 2014 Calgary Stampede in Calgary, Alberta. As an American, a mother, and the former wife of a Marine and police officer, I have a great respect for our country and the servicemen and women who protect her. I have not served in our country’s military, but when I sing our National Anthem, I sing it for those who have fought for her, who are currently fighting for her, and for those who will fight for her. I sing it because I am proud and thankful to be an American.

AQHA PULLS PLUG on Trail Challenge & Trail Ride Programs Changes to the AQHA Trail Challenge and Trail Ride programs will allow AQHA the opportunity to develop programs that better serve the Association’s members and American Quarter Horses. The Trail Challenge and Trail Ride programs will be discontinued effective December 31, 2017. As the largest single-breed equine
association in the world, the American Quarter Horse Association strives to deliver the best programs and services to our members and horse lovers across the globe. It is important to continuously evaluate our efforts to ensure we are providing programs that create a positive impact on the Association and industry. As part of this process, program audits of all AQHA programs are evaluated by AQHA staff members and the AQHA Executive
Committee. We recently conducted an audit of the AQHA Trail Challenge and Trail Ride programs. These programs were originally developed to provide opportunities for AQHA members and nonmembers to further engage with their horses and other horse owners. With any AQHA program, the ultimate goal is to attract new people into our Association and maintain current membership. While these programs have created fellowship among participants, they

This change will allow AQHA the opportunity to re-evaluate and develop programs that better serve both our members and horses. The three qualifying methods now include: Qualify by earning the required number of points, Compete at a designated number of shows during the respective qualifying period (10 for Select and amateur or 20 for open) or Participate in the new nomination pilot program for halter horses. Levi Jordan a Desert Hills man recently competed in the Fastest Gun Alive Championship of Cowboy Fast Draw in Fallon, Nevada where 249 entries shot it out in a 4 day competition to determine the Worlds Fastest Gun Alive. Levi who goes by the Alias Rodeo Romeo competed in the men's division with 159 contestants winning 4th place. He also won the Arizona State Resident Championship earlier this year which means he is #1 in Arizona and #4 in the World of Cowboy Fast Draw. Cowboy Fast Draw is a shooting association that embraces the romance of the 1880's old west. Participants are Levi Jordan encouraged to dress period correct aka Rodeo Romeo and the guns have to be single action .45 caliber Colt or Colt clone revolvers the same as the Cowboy period of the old west. CFDA motto is Safety first, fun second and competition third. Cowboy Fast Draw is safe. CFDA has one of the most comprehensive safety training programs of any shooting game to teach new shooters how to shoot and follows the same safety procedures and principles all the way through the Class A competitions. There are multiple layers of safety from the shooter themselves backed up by a hand judge to the Range Master, match officials and Match Director. Every one on the range is dedicated to safety as a Range Officer. Cowboy Fast Draw is fun. Fun for the whole family. We start Gun safety with children as young as 6 years old and can compete as a level 1 two handed shooter at age 8. Cowboy Fast Draw is competitive but is one of the only sports where a brand new shooter with brand new or even borrowed equipment can get in the line with a world champion and have a chance to win with the built in degree of difficulty. Levi and fellow champion Fast Draw shooter Charlie Holmes run the Fast Draw Training Camp in Desert Hills and Prescott, AZ where they train Fast Draw. Charlie is also NRA Certified Postol Safety instructor and hold CCW and Pistol Safety classes every month. Both Levi and Charlie are certified range masters putting safety as the number one priority. The Fast Draw Training Camp can be reached at fastdrawcamp@ gmail.com

G N I T O O F A AREN Good footing is important during competition and practice, we have high performance expensive horses, and hurting one while practicing would be devastating. Over a year ago my good barrel horse hyperextended his front leg because of bad footing. I never to have in realized how important good footing was s were worth your own arena, our Custom Mix Footing e on having the investment because you can’t put a pric your horse’s “peace of mind” when it comes to you and safety.” --- Nicole Banning
We now have Kiser Arena Specialist approved blends
Working with Trio Aggregate Haulers and Brennen has been absolutely fantastic! They were very professional, extremely knowledgable and incredibly efficient. I could not be more happy with my Custom Mix Footing. It is a perfect consistency for my horses, has done great in all weather conditions and is very easy to work with. I love working in the footing every day! --- Shann on Beethe
What’s the Custom Mix Advantage?
• Excellent drainage • Stability and cushion for your horse and livestock • Minimal dust • A longer lasting material when compared to a traditional sand arena.

Hutchins-Kristen Earns Wire-to-Wire Victory in USEF CCI1* Eventing National Championship
By Kathleen Landwehr
Lexington, Ky. – The 2017 Hagyard Midsouth Three-Day Event at the Kentucky Horse Park saw impressive performances from the CCI1* competitors from October 19-21. The combinations headed into Saturday’s show jumping phase hoping for a strong finish. Bethany HutchinsKristen and Geluk HVF led from start to finish in the USEF CCI1* Eventing National Championship for the Richard Collins Trophy, while Elizabeth Scheltema and Bill Owen rose to the top of the leaderboard in the USEF CCI1*-JR/YR Eventing National Championship for the Harry T. Peters Trophy. Hutchins-Kristen (Dryden, Mich.) and Geluk HVF, the six-year-old Dutch Warmblood stallion she owns with her mother Marian Hutchins, began their winning weekend on Thursday by earning a dressage score of 42.2. A double-clear cross-country round over Jay Hambly’s course kept them in the lead on Friday. HutchinsKristen and Geluk HVF knocked one

rail over Brody Robertson’s show jumping course to finish as the USEF CCI1* Eventing National Champions with a score of 46.2.
“I think the thing with this sport is you always have high expectations when you work as hard as we do and you have done your homework,” Hutchins-Kristen explained of her win. “You come with the expectations that you could go home with a top placing, but it is also just a little bit of luck at the end. That’s the thing with this sport.” Geluk HVF is the fourth generation of horses produced by Haven Valley Farm, a smallscale breeding operation Hutchins-Kristen runs with her mother. HutchinsKristen competes his dam, Bronte HVF, at the twostar level, and she has high hopes for Geluk HVF. “He has just got so much heart, he tries so hard, and he loves to compete," she said. Bethany Hutchins-Kristen "I think he got here and it and Geluk HVF, the 2017 USEF CCI1* is like show time, so that is a lot of fun. He is still Eventing National Champions a little bit green at times, Photo: Xpress Foto but I look forward to him continuing to develop. I think the sky is the limit for him.” Hannah Leahey (Bloomington, Ill.) and Cassinova, her eight-year-old Holsteiner gelding, earned the USEF CCI1* Eventing Reserve National Champion title thanks to their strong performances. After sitting in fourth after dressage with a score of 47.9, Great Prices! they moved up to second on a double-

clear cross-country round. Leahey and Cassinova closed out their CCI1* performance with a faultless show jumping round to finish on their dressage score. Third-place finishers Robin (Andrew) Walker (Grass Lake, Mich.) and SBT Barolo, the seven-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding he owns with Roger Schramm and Alston Kerr, also managed to close out the competition on their dressage score. The pair tied for fifth on a score of 48.8 after the first phase, and two double-clear jumping rounds allowed them to have a solid finish. In the USEF CCI1*-JR/YR Eventing National Championship, Scheltema (Caledonia, Mich.) and Bill Owen, Kathryn Scheltema’s 13-year-old Hanoverian/Hackneycross gelding, steadily climbed the leaderboard to claim the National Champion title. After they started the competition in a tie for third with a dressage score of 45.3, faultless cross-country and show jumping rounds allowed the duo to move to second then, ultimately, the top spot amongst the junior and young rider combinations. “I came here to get around the course and really just for the experience,” Scheltema stated. “He is pretty new to me; I have only had him a year. We haven’t shown a lot this year, so we really just wanted the experience.

Paint Horse exhibitors shatter horse, entry and
payout numbers during the 2017 World Championship Show FORT WORTH—Paint Horse exhibitors shattered horse, entry and payout numbers during the 2017 APHA World Championship Show in its September debut. The event was held September 20-October 1 at Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas.
Over 1,100 horses were on display, generating more than 15,000 entries all vying for more than $800,000 in cash and prizes. APHA’s world shows haven’t cracked the 1,000-horse and 15,000-entry ceiling since the Youth World Show split from the Open and Amateur World Show in 2008. APHA named 190 world cham-
pions over the course of 12 days, and held a total of 291 classes. Thirty-eight U.S. states, six Canadian provinces, Belgium, Mexico and Sweden were represented. The show saw an increase in several key areas over the 2016 Open/ Amateur World Show including Amateur WalkTrot classes (up 51%), Open Halter classes (up 22%), Novice Amateur classes (up 19%), Amateur Solid Paint-Bred classes (up 17%), total Open classes (up 10%) and Amateur performance classes (up 5%). APHA once again hosted the American Cutting Horse Association’s (ACHA) Cowtown Cutting September 29-October 1, an all-breed cutting event attracting 85 horses (17.7% increase over 2016) and 233 entries (19.8% increase over 2016). The Cowtown Cutting consisted of 24 classes and paid out $26,440. In addition, APHA partnered with the World Conformation Horse Association (WCHA) to offer big money to halter enthusiasts through two premier halter events: the APHA World Championship Show and the (all-breed) WCHA Breeder’s Championship and Big Money Futurities. All in all, more than $415,000 was up for grabs for Paint halter horses—that included more than $73,000 in APHA Platinum Breeders’ Futurity classes, over $36,000 in Gold/Silver/Bronze Breeders’ Futurity payouts, $20,000 in the Breeders Halter Futurity bonus payouts, $18,750 from the Lynn Simons Memorial Halter Futurity and $268,000 in the WCHA Breeder’s

Championship and Big Money Futurities. The WCHA events alone drew 575 entries and 117 horses. Also new to the World Show this year was the addition of Performance Halter classes in both the Open and Solid Paint-Bred divisions, with each attracting healthy numbers of competitors. All in all, APHA show entries totaled 14,630 (2,926 x five judges) bringing the total entries for all combined events to 15,438. APHA also debuted a World Show app through InspireHUB Technologies Inc. that provided quick access to key show information such as show schedule, entries, show services, show results and more. The app generated 7,205 visits by 2,407 unique visitors in 15 countries throughout the show. “We added several new and exciting things to the show this year,” said APHA Executive Director Billy Smith. “When we see nice increases in numbers like this, it confirms that our members like what we are doing, and that’s what it’s all about. A huge thanks goes out to all exhibitors and show staff for making this year’s event a success.” Watch for more World Show wrapup information in the December 2017 issue of APHA’s official publication, the Paint Horse Journal.

The Hermès U.S. Show Jumping Team Takes Silver at FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping Final at CSIO5* Barcelon
By Julian McPeak
Barcelona, Spain - The Hermès U.S. Show Jumping Team finished strong on Saturday evening at the FEI Nations Cup Jumping Final at CSIO5* Barcelona, claiming second over Belgium. After technical issues with one of the stadium lights that caused nearly a two-hour delay in competition start time, the U.S. team of Lauren Hough, Laura Kraut, Beezie Madden, and McLain Ward proved their experience and fortitude, finishing on a mere four faults. The U.S. team took home third in 2016, only to climb up the podium to second in 2017. “Last year third, this year second. It was tremendous,” said U.S. team Chef d’Equipe Robert Ridland. “Beezie [Madden] is on a young horse, a new combination, and it is fabulous. Same thing with Laura [Kraut] – that is a relatively new combination and the other two [Hough and Ward], perfection. We knew we were coming with a good team. There is no question about that. We had four veteran riders out there,

but the combinations themselves were relatively new, and we really couldn’t be happier.” Hough (Wellington, Fla.) and Ohlala once again served as pathfinders for the U.S. team, riding their second clear round of the competition. The Ohlala Group’s

13-year-old Swedish Warmblood mare put in a flawless performance after a long wait to get started. Watch their ride here. “I’ve actually never had that happen before,” said Hough of the competition delay. “I had to get the horse ready twice, and it was a lot of sitting around. I had to stay focused without letting that nervous energy bunch up too much. But [Ohlala] was absolutely perfect. I’m thrilled, I’m absolutely thrilled.” Laura Kraut (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) and St. Bride’s Farm’s 10-yearold Holsteiner gelding Confu had a spectacular round but dropped one rail near the beginning of the course, serving as the U.S. team’s drop score. Beezie Madden (Cazenovia, N.Y.), with Abigail Wexner’s nine-year-old Dutch Warmblood stallion, Darry Lou, also dropped one rail. The U.S. team sat on four faults, tied with Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland headed into the fourth and final round. McLain Ward and HH Azur

With just one time fault, the Netherlands rode prior to the U.S. team. A clear round from Harrie Smolders and Don VHP Z meant a win for the Netherlands. U.S. anchors Ward (Brewster, N.Y.) and HH Azur would compete against the clock for second. Ward and Double H Farm and Francois Mathy’s 11-year-old Belgium Warmblood mare did just that, delivering their second clear round of the competition and sealing second for the U.S. team. “It felt like Rio all over again,” said Ward. “In that situation, you fight to be the best you can be on the day – that is my job, particularly as anchor, to be able to handle that. I knew that the time was going to be the factor, so I tried to think about that on my round, and Azur performed beautifully. She felt really good. She felt brilliant the other day, brilliant today, maybe even better.” With a second position finish, Ridland says the Hermès U.S. Show Jumping Team will now set their sights on the FEI World Equestrian Games™ Tryon 2018 (WEG). “ It was an unbelievably consistent week,” said Ridland. “Our first round on Thursday night, and tonight we had four veteran riders, a couple of them on relatively new combinations, so in reality, we couldn’t be happier. This was one of our big priorities of the year. We feel we are on the right path, and at this point in time, we start looking forward to the WEG.” The USEF International High Performance Programs are generously supported by the USET Foundation, USOC, and USEF Sponsors and Members.

Hagyard Equine Medical Institute Releases Study on Gastric Ulceration
Lexington, KY –– Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, the oldest and one of the largest private equine veterinary facilities in the world submitted a study that was peer reviewed and published in the March 2017 Journal of Equine Veterinary Science, showing treatment with a polysaccharide blend reduced gastric ulceration in active horses.
Ten horses underwent gastroscopy for diagnosis and scoring of existing ulcers. For the duration of the study, each participant was administered 1 to 2 ounces of a polysaccharide blend. The study reveals that a polysaccharide blend of high-molecular-weight hyaluronan and schizophyllan, a betaglucan, administered daily for 30 days demonstrates ulcerative healing. Of the horses treated with the blended therapy, 90% showed complete resolution and/or improvement in ulcerative areas, increased appetite, weight gain, and positive behavioral changes. The study suggests that a polysaccharide blend represents a novel means to enhance gastric healing in the active horse. The study’s long-term results could be impactful to the entire equine community, giving horse owners and veterinarians an allnatural alternative to current therapies. “Ulcers can be found in as many as 80-100% of horses," said Dr. Nathan Slovis of the McGee Medical Center, Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, "our objective in this research was to determine whether a natural treatment would help in the healing process. From the data gathered, we were able to determine that horses can be suc-

cessfully treated with a naturally safe and effective polysaccharide blend of hyaluronan and schizophyllan." Since its inception in 1876, Hagyard Equine Medical Institute has been at the forefront of equine medicine. Its reputation is built, in part, on a continued effort to increase veterinary knowledge and thereby improve the state-of-the-art treatments and surgeries offered to its diverse equine clientele which represent international breeding operations, world-renowned racehorses as well as performance and pleasure horses. Pozzi Tonozzi Closing in on $2 Million
By Jolee Jordan
Waco, Texas—Last Saturday, two-time World Champion Barrel Racer Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi put a flourish on the end of her season with a win at the Wrangler Champions Challenge event in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, wrapping up a weekend worth $9,188 and stamping her name in the program for the 2017 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR). When the big event begins in December, Pozzi Tonozzi will make her 11th appearance as a contestant. Just one week later, the Texas cowgirl put the first earnings next to her name in her quest for a 12th trip to Las Vegas as the 2018 season got underway at Texas rodeos in Hempstead and Rosenberg and—the biggest of all—the 2017 All American ProRodeo Series Finals held in conjunction with the Heart of Texas Fair and Rodeo in Waco. The All American ProRodeo Series encompasses all professional rodeos in the nation which add less than $30,000 across all PRCA and WPRA events. Contestants must compete in at least 30 rodeos in order to be eligible for qualification for the annual finals which boasts a purse of $421,000. The top 30 in the All American standings will compete in Waco, divided evenly into three brackets of 10 competitors. Each bracket will compete in two rounds held in consecutive nights; no averages are kept or paid and money is paid in go rounds only. After two rounds, the top three
102
money winners advance to the SemiFinals to be held on the final night of the rodeo, October 14. The final performance will see the nine contestants make their Semi-Final runs before the field is cut down to the four—only the fastest in that round will move on to the Finals. The Finals is held later that same night, sudden death style for the title and a nice $7,500 payday. Because all the winnings from the All American ProRodeo Series Finals count for 2018, the race for next year’s WNFR begins now. Pozzi Tonozzi stayed aboard her mare Steeley after a big weekend to close 2017, picking up a check at Rosenberg before coming to the Extraco Event Center, also the site of the PHOTO: James Phifer WPRA World Finals later this month. After finishing third in the opening round from the final position on the ground, Pozzi Tonozzi and Steeley electrified the crowd on Sunday night with a blazing fast 15.70 second run to set the pace as the first to run. While it was a lightning fast round with four runs under sixteen, Pozzi Tonozzi easily won the round. The time is a new All-American record, breaking the previous mark set by Mary Walker during the Finals in 2012. All totaled, Pozzi Tonozzi stuffed more than $4,100 in her Wranglers and will head to the Semi-Finals on Saturday night as the top qualifier in Bracket A. She also moved even closer to $2 million in career earnings in the WPRA, now just about $11,000 short. She will be just the third WPRA lady to make that mark behind four-time WPRA World Champ Sherry Cervi and Lisa Lockhart. Pozzi Tonozzi will be joined by another 2017 WNFR-bound cowgirl, fellow Texan Kellie Collier in the Semi-Finals on Saturday. Collier earned a pair of checks in two runs aboard Lolo, tying first round winner Kelly Bruner with $2,779 in earnings. Bruner is a veteran of many Texas Circuit Finals Rodeos and a past round winner here at the All American ProRodeo Series Finals. Riding Suzy, a gelding she’s owned since he was three years old, Bruner stopped the clock on opening night in 15.96 seconds. A downed barrel kept the pair from money in round two but they will still advance to the Semi-Finals. Meanwhile, Bruner also earned a win in Hempstead over the weekend to run her earnings out to $5,259 for the first week of 2018. Competition was fierce in Bracket A. While only a few cowgirls broke sixteen seconds during the entire 2016 event, five accomplished the feat in the first two rounds of 2017. Just eleven one hundredths of a second separated the four money winners in the first go.

This mare has an old injury to the lateral side of her right front cannon bone, with deep scarring. There was extensive soft tissue damage which restricted her movement, causing a shortness of stride. This image shows visible enlargement of the soft tissue injury by its heat signature from recurrent inflammation. Note that the right leg is visibly larger than the left leg.
Following 8 weeks of Neprofin administration, this mare showed a marked improvement. Heat signatures have returned to normal, showing virtually no signs of inflammation or pain. Neprofin was able to digest and eliminate the inflamed scar tissue mass, which had caused lameness and a shortened stride. Note that both legs are now identical in size and shape. The mare is now sound and bears weight evenly on both front legs.

2017 Western Dressage World Championship Show:
Honoring the Horse, Celebrating Successes
Parker, Colo. - The Western Dressage Association® of America is celebrating the success of its fifth annual Western Dressage World Championship Show. More than 800 rides were held over four days, Sept. 28-Oct. 1, at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, OK, with competitors vying for 79 world championships and 15 divisional championship belt buckles. “Western dressage honors the partnership between horses and riders, and that was certainly on display at our World Show,” said WDAA President Ellen DiBella. “I was especially thrilled to see the riders in our Physically Challenged division.” Three-time world champion Shawn Makepeace, who is legally blind, earned that divisional championship on her American Quarter Horse mare, Mosly A Rose. Volunteers held bright LED lights at each letter around the dressage arena, making it possible for Makepeace, of Belleville, IL, to discern the location of the letters as she rode her western dressage tests. The show drew approximately 170 exhibitors from 29 states from coast to coast, five Canadian provinces, and New Zealand. Nearly 40 horse breeds were represented as well, making

this a truly inclusive sport that is welcoming to all types of horses and both beginner and expert riders alike. Older horses have found success in this discipline, as well – many of them on their second or third career. “It’s so exciting to see horses in their mid20s competing successfully,” DiBella said. A great example was the American Quarter Horse Spindoll, who at age 25 helped her rider, Rose Ruotsalainen of Cheney, WA, earn three junior world championships, two reserve world championships, and the overall junior divisional championship at the introductory level. The long weekend also had plenty of opportunities for fun, with exhibitor parties, festive costume freestyle competitions, and stall and golf-cart decorating contests. The show couldn’t have happened, however, without support from generous sponsors. “So many people stepped up at every level to sponsor classes, parties, and much more,” DiBella said. “GGT Footing has been a wonderful partner to WDAA for so many years and was our largest supporter this year. We thank GGT for the tremendous support.”
30-Year AQHA Show Record Smashed NOVEMBER 2017 1
Maxwell can compete in youth classes until the end of 2019, making her 5,000-point goal achievable. (Journal photo) Zips Bossy Chip has smashed through American Quarter Horse Hall of Famer Van Decka’s 30-year record for the all-time leading youth horse by points. The record was set 30 years ago. In September, Zips Bossy Chip topped that record with 17-year-old owner Ellexxah Maxwell of West Mansfield, Ohio. Zips Bossy Chip has amassed 4,280 youth points.
