The Bad Actor Wild Bill Hickok excelled at many things. By most accounts, he was a crack shot and an excellent rider. He worked as a wagon boss and freighter, and for the Pony Express, although he was too big to qualify as a rider. He also took turns as a scout, a spy, a lawman and he even tried acting. Wild Bill Hickok and Buffalo Bill Cody were the rock stars of their day. Think Crosby, Stills & Nash, only this is Hickok, Cody & Omohundro. (Granted, it’s a mouthful, but you get the picture) Touring from town to town and flaunting their Western frontier manliness, “The Combination” attracted large crowds—and eager women—and they encountered all of the problems and side effects attendant to the latter day rock ‘n’ roll tour, including security issues. The only difference is, Cody and crew didn’t have bodyguards or a security detail. On a whim and a promise from his friend, Buffalo Bill, James Butler Hickok tried his hand at striding the boards.

Seventies (that would be the 1870s) rock stars: Wild Bill, Buffalo Bill and Texas Jack who tour under the name “The Combination” and perform all their classic hits.

14

OCTOBER 2017

Wild Bill’s Lamp Damnation In 1911, Cody had this to say about the reluctant thespian: “Wild Bill was a bad actor most anywhere, but he was an especially bad actor on the stage. . .One night when the spot light found him leaning against a gnarled oak in the background, it made him mad, and he took a shot at the spot light machine in the central aisle of the balcony, shattered the bull’s eye and broke the machine. The show had to go on to the end without the usual calcium effects.” In another version of this story, Hickok gets blasted with the intense light and yells, “Turn the blamed thing off!”

September 8, 1873 Inexperienced and nervous, Wild Bill steps out on a stage for the first time in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He is appearing, along with Buffalo Bill Cody and Texas Jack Omohundro, in a play written by Fred G. Maeder, called, “The Scouts of the Plains.” The stories of Wild Bill’s discomfort on stage are legion, but the following one is a good example of his apparent inability to “pretend”: Two scouts are on stage swapping yarns. A bottle of whiskey is passed between them and as each takes a swig the actor is supposed to “spout a blood curdling yarn.” When it’s Wild Bill’s turn, he takes a swig, looks horrified, spits out the liquid and yells, “cold tea don’t count—either I get real whisky or I ain’t tellin’ no story!” Allegedly Cody sent out for real whiskey so the show could continue. This seems almost too precious to be true, but there are others as well.

On Sale This Fall!

The Leg Burner Wild Bill soon tired of show business. He was bored and he hated the fakery. To amuse himself, he would fire off his pistols (they used blanks but with a full charge) close to the “Indians” (anglo actors) legs, burning them. Instead of “dying” as the script said they should, the actors would howl in pain and hop around the stage like crazy.

“The ‘Prince of Pistoleers’ meets the ‘Prince of Western History’ in this much anticipated new book from Bob Boze Bell— chock full of the great art, rare photos, authoritative history, and that unique dose of Boze whimsy that we have come to expect. More fun than any history book should be and a must have addition to every Western collection.” —Paul Andrew Hutton

History, Enthusiasm, Investment, Integrity

AQHA Executive Vice President Craig Huffhines shares highlights from All American race weekend in New Mexico and discusses the future of American Quarter Horse racing. If you love Quarter Horses, regardless of their discipline, you must put the All American on your bucket list. In 1959, investors Eugene Hensley, Carl Mercer and cowboy musician Ray Reed held the first All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs, solidifying the date for the next 58 years; it would be Labor Day weekend. More than $5.4 million dollars in purses were up for grabs over the three days of elite sprint-track racing at Ruidoso, New Mexico. Undoubtedly, the All American is considered the “Super Bowl” of Quarter Horse racing. If you love Quarter Horses, regardless of their discipline, you must put the All American on your bucket list. The All American Derby held September 3 distributed a total purse of $1.37 million for the 3-year-old Derby finalists, and the All American Futurity held September 4 paid out $3 million dollars as the richest race in all of Quarter Horse racing for the fastest 2-year-old horses in the world. Combined, the two races paid out a staggering $4,364,908. That kind of money is one of the most prolific economic drivers of the Quarter Horse breeding industry. The weekend also boasted of one of the most exciting racing Quarter Horse yearling sales in the country, which this year grossed $13,169,000 on 308 yearlings sold. Gross dollars spent for yearling prospects was up 9 percent from a year ago, while the average for the sale was up 16 percent at $42,756. The median sale price was up 4 percent at $27,000. Even the betting public was more aggressive and optimistic this year, as a packed house at Ruidoso Downs along with out-of-state simulcast bettors wagered more than $2.7 million, an increase of 6 percent from a year ago. Looking at this event alone, one might infer that there is an enormous amount of optimism within the Quarter Horse racing industry; and on the surface this is true. There are new investors who have purchased the historic Ruidoso Downs, the very place where legendary Hall of Fame horses are made. The new potential investment in the mountain racetrack brings about the potential for refreshing newness to the facility and to the sport. Renowned Quarter Horse racing investors, including wireless telephone service pioneer Stan Sigman, insurance mogul John Andreini, AQHA Past President and Texas cattle feeder Johnny Trotter and Houston businessman Narsico “Chicho” Flores have come together to purchase the facility from longtime owner R.D. Hubbard. All of this momentum and investment has the potential to carry the sport into the next decade and secure the future for this generation and the next generation of Quarter Horse breeding enthusiasts. However, the culture of horse racing today must be modified for this sport to survive into the next decade. It must change in order for new investors in the business to be successful. It must change to attract a younger generation of betting enthusiasts to play the horses in addition to a growing interest in casino gaming and what is likely to become legalized professional sports betting. We cannot change human nature. Our country and our capitalist culture were built on greed and fear, and that human nature will never change. Markets are driven off these human natures. However, there will always be those who take greed to the extreme, stretch the limits of fairness and push the abilities of the horse to deadly limits. It’s this human nature that creates the most risk for the sport. To combat this dark side of human nature, the industry continues to work toward bringing forth the very best science, the very best standards for monitoring, with uniformity and reciprocity of rules of law across state lines to secure the integrity of the sport. For the past year, AQHA has been pushing very hard for racing uniformity and reform by conducting joint meetings with key Quarter Horse jurisdictions, organizing a laboratory uniformity meeting in conjunction with Racing Medication and Testing Consortium and investing in professional investigation teams at our major races. Still, our strongest Quarter Horse state jurisdictions are not yet on the same page. While attending the American Horse Council annual meeting this past June in Washington, D.C., AQHA Past President Dr. Glenn Blodgett and I had the 18

opportunity to visit with Congressman Andy Barr (R-Ky). Our purpose there was to share our thoughts on behalf of AQHA and the Quarter Horse industry regarding the federal racing integrity legislation of which he is a sponsor. We shared several concerns with him regarding the proposed federal legislation that if passed would take local regulatory control over medication violations away from the state commissions and put it into the hands of a federal authority. There were several concerns about this proposed legislation that Dr. Blodgett and I shared with the congressman: The unscientific basis for a proposed ban of Lasix, a known therapeutic medication proven to reduce and prevent exerciseinduced pulmonary hemorrhage, which is bleeding caused by exercise. Representation on the proposed authority and whether or not known animal-activist groups with publicly stated objections to horse racing would have a leadership seat on that authority. Whether already-established scientific bodies like the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium would be the chief council regarding medication science, as in AQHA’s opinion, it should be. The federal government’s ability to adjudicate the massive number of medication violations across the country at the speed of commerce. That a costly industry-funded bureaucracy could have an inefficient and uneconomical price tag that would force smaller state jurisdictions out of business. Without a doubt, the congressman knew his subject matter. We were extremely impressed with his level of engagement, knowledge and enthusiasm for horse racing. He was completely on top of the issues and he understood where we were coming from. By the end of the meeting, it was very clear that the congressman, without question, wanted the same thing that AQHA racing leadership wants – to assure the integrity of horse racing for the betting public and the owners of racehorses. He closed with this thought: Very soon, professional sports leagues are going to lobby to legalize sports betting. As recently as July, National Basketball Association Commissioner Adam Silver stated that he is optimistic that sports betting will be legalized in the next few years. Interstate betting of any sport is and will be in the future squarely under the jurisdiction of the Federal Trade Commission. That authority falls under congressional oversight and if local jurisdictions cannot assure integrity, rest assured, Congress will take over that effort. If and when that happens, the stakes for violations will be higher and the punishment and suspensions for violations will not be stayed in a local court of convenience. Penalties will be stiff, testing will be thorough and the use of illegal substances will not be tolerated. That goal is consistent with AQHA’s message and actions for the past five years. We at AQHA endorse racing integrity. Our black-type pedigree that supports breeding decisions depends on it. The value discovery process of horses that supported $13 million in horse sales this past weekend depends on it, owners depend on it for driving confidence in their investment based on the assumption that there will be an even playing field on the track and the betting public’s confidence in handicapping, which drives the economic engine for racing, depends on it. It is our hope that state commissions will work collaboratively with a coalition of laboratories to unify standards. Loopholes must be closed to keep horses trained by violators off the track until drug testing clears them to run. Commissions need to be more consistent in doing their job in testing and detecting violations, enforcing the law and imposing deterrents. It is our wish that state attorneys general and state courts will support commission suspensions and not bypass rulings through legal stays of appeal. At some point, habitual bad actors must be banned for life. If these measures don’t happen, one of two scenarios will occur: 1) Horse racing as we know it will disappear like the horse and buggy, or 2) The federal government will intervene and fix it for us if it’s not too late. Ruidoso Downs and the All American Futurity are national cultural treasures worth preserving and it’s my hope that our continued efforts with all of our state Quarter Horse racing commissions will create the answers we need to protect and secure the future of the sport.

Let’s support Kevin Stallings!

As many of you now know, Kevin Stallings was airlifted from the Cottonwood, Arizona ER with a severely dissected aorta on September 7, 2017. The prognosis was not good. Doctors were amazed that Kevin was alive and still fighting when they first evaluated him. They put him into a medically induced coma and admitted him to the ICU where he remained for 9 days. When they brought him out of the coma, everyone was relieved to find that he had no physical deficits from the injury and resulting lack of oxygen and blood flow to his brain and organs. Against all odds, Kevin has continued to progress and, after time in a rehabilitation center we're thrilled that he is home and recovering. He is a true Miracle Man to still be with us and we are confident that he will make it through stronger than ever.

to help others. Watch him in the warm-up pen at any equestrian event and you’ll see a steady stream of riders come along to ask for his advice. At his ranch, there’s always a new rider or ringing cell call, seeking advice and support. Kevin always takes the time to help. That’s who he is.

A multi-time world champion trainer in reining, cow horse and ranch riding, Kevin has always had the time

We want to help one of our own who has given so much to us, so that Kevin and Karen can focus on his continued healing, without financial worries.

Kevin and his wife Karen have been integral members of the equestrian community for decades. Numerous equestrian organizations have offered to support and sponsor this GoFundMe site to help cover the enormous medical costs associated with Kevin’s traumatic injury. As you can imagine, with services ranging from air evacuation, a long stay in ICU, and cardio specialist’s insurance will likely not be enough to cover these large medical costs.

The Cave Creek Saddle Club Rides Again!

By Marie Nesfield

It has been a loooong hot summer, but thankfully its time to ride our horses again! We had record hot days, but they are almost a memory. With the breaking of the heat and the change of seasons on the horizon, comes The Cave Creek Saddle Club’s favorite time of the year: Fall and Winter. We have a lot of plans for horseback riding in the works for the coming months. The club was started in the early

60’s by a group of folks from the Cave Creek Area who just wanted to have fun with friends and horses. We are still following that mission today. The club is open to anyone; Even if you do not live in Cave Creek, and focuses on organized trail rides. The members are from all different walks of life, but we all love the Arizona Desert and horseback riding. Most of the rides are close to Phoenix. There may be rides with camping trips interspersed throughout the year. There are rides suited to every level of

rider. Some of the places we plan to go to include Granite Mt, Rio Verde , Halloween ride in costume at Apache Wash, and Coon Creek.

Henderson Park, Sonoran Desert Preserve, Brown’s Ranch, and Table Mesa. We closed the 2016/2017 Season with a bang. Several members went for a wonderful weekend trip to Chiricahua National Monument, and spent a few fun filled days riding in beautiful scenery, and enjoying each other’s company. At the last meeting, in May, new officers were elected for the 2017/2018 Season. Greg LaCosse did such a wonderful job the previous year, he was once again elected. President; Kathryn Friedman was elected as the VP; Jean Anderson was elected as the Secretary/Treasurer, and Patty Rowan and Marcie Humphrey will act as trail coordinators. (and they find us some really awesome places to ride!) If you want to meet a great group of fellow horse lovers, come and join us! The new riding season is coming up quick, and you don’t want to miss out on all of the fun! The club’s meeting location is at the Heart and Soul Cafe, 4705 E. Carefree Highway, #117. It’s located in the shopping center on the southwest corner of Carefree Highway and North Black Canyon Parkway on the third Tuesday of every month, beginning in September, for great food, a social gathering, and to discuss club business. There are presentations related to horse keeping at almost every meeting; ranging from local veterinarians, feed distributors, educators, park rangers, etc. Meetings are open to everyone. If you are interested in our club, you can check out or websitehttp://cavecreeksaddleclub. org/default.htm or email us at info@ cavecreeksaddleclub.org.

In addition to great riding, the club also has an annual holiday party, has ridden in the Cave Creek Wild West Days Parade and we have some interesting and informative speakers at our monthly meetings. . Some of the placed we rode at last season included Goldfield Ghost Town, Jackass Flats, Emery

Alejandro Villanueva Real American Hero

Alejandro Villanueva (born September 22, 1988) is an American football offensive tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League (NFL). Villanueva was a Captain in the United States Army, in which he served as an Army Ranger and was decorated with a Bronze Star for valor. He played college football for the Army Black Knights, being recruited at one position and playing three others during the course of his career. After serving three tours of duty in Afghanistan, he signed a contract with the Philadelphia Eagles on May 5, 2014, after working out in a regional showcase. Early life

Villanueva was born on Naval Air Station Meridian in Meridian, Mississippi to Ignacio Villanueva, a Spanish Naval officer who worked for NATO, and his Spanish wife Matilda Martin. Both his mother and father are over 6 feet (1.8 m) tall. Alejandro was the eldest of the family’s four children, including siblings Paloma, Iñaki and Carmen. During his childhood, he lived in Rhode Island, Spain, and Belgium. In Spain he learned to play rugby, which, for a time, he preferred to football, which he began to play in Belgium. It was while he was attending SHAPE High School in Casteau, Belgium that he was recruited to play American football. Villanueva’s childhood friend whom he’d met at SHAPE was recruited to play football for the Army Black Knights and his friend told the Army coaches about Villanueva. They kept in touch and Villanueva told him that he was considering attending West Point, where he later enrolled. His brother Iñaki Villanueva is a professional rugby union player. He plays with the Spain national rugby union team and with the sevens team. He was in the squad that qualified for the 2016 Olympics and he played in the Olympic tournament. College career Villanueva played college football for the Army Black Knights at several positions, including left tackle,

Professional career Tryouts

Although he went undrafted in the 2010 NFL Draft, he received a try out with the Cincinnati Bengals as a tight end but did not make the team and went back into military service. Two years later, he made a second attempt to play in the NFL again as a tight end. He was given a tryout and practiced with the Chicago Bears, but was not signed. After finishing his last tour with the Army Rangers, Villanueva decided to pursue his NFL career again and began working out at Savannah State College. In March 2014, he paid $245 to attend a regional NFL combine in Flowery Branch, Georgia. During this time, the NFL held ten regional combines nationwide and had over 3,000 prospects attend. In April 2014, he was one of 240 prospects invited to the NFL super regional combine in Detroit and met with representatives from the Philadelphia Eagles. Philadelphia Eagles 2014 On May 5, 2014, he was signed to the Philadelphia Eagles for an undisclosed contract to play as a defensive end. His signing marked the second time the Eagles had signed a military veteran in recent years, having previously had Chad Hall, a wide receiver from the Air Force, as a member of the team. Villanueva said that if he did not make an NFL roster, he planned to serve a fourth tour of duty in Afghanistan. He commented, “I see this as a win-win situation. Obviously, I’m trying to get to a team and contribute. But if I can’t, then I can’t wait to get back to the Army and serve in the same manner that I have.” During training camp, Villanueva gained 40 pounds (18 kg), noting that he is eating a consistent diet, which contrasted with his military career insofar as while in the military, he often did not have time or inclination to eat, whereas with the Eagles, he was getting “plenty to eat”. It was announced on Saturday, August 23 that he was one of fourteen players cut from the team.

Pittsburgh Steelers

On August 21, 2014, during a preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Villanueva was spotted by Steelers’ head coach Mike Tomlin, who was impressed with his size and athleticism. Eight days after he was

Upon joining his new team, he was immediately changed from a defensive end to an offensive tackle, as it was thought to better suit him. As a defensive end for the Eagles, Villanueva weighed 250 lb. Within a year of becoming an offensive tackle, he rose up to 340 lb. On January 6, 2015, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed him to a two-year, $960,000 reserve/futures contract. On October 18, 2015, Villanueva received his first opportunity at left tackle against the Arizona Cardinals after starting left tackle Kelvin Beachum left the game with a torn ACL. The following week, Villanueva received his first career start at offensive tackle since his sophomore year at Army in 2008 and was tasked with blocking Kansas City Chiefs ProBowl defensive end, Tamba Hali. On July 27, 2017, Villanueva signed a four-year, $24 million contract extension with the Steelers. On September 24, 2017, prior to a game against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field, the Steelers did not take the field for the national anthem in order to avoid getting caught up in the controversy related to a speech by President Donald Trump surrounding some players kneeling or displaying other signs of protest around the NFL. Villanueva was the lone member of the Steelers to appear publicly for the national anthem, standing in front of the entrance tunnel for the performance while the rest of the team remained in the locker room. Head coach Mike Tomlin stated a wish to simply play the game and not allow for any show of support one way or the other on the issue. Likely as a result of this, Villanueva’s jersey became the top selling jersey on the

NFL’s official store in the 24 hour period after Sunday’s games started. However, later Villanueva apologized or his appearance saying, “I see that picture of me standing by myself and I’m embarrassed to a degree, because unintentionally I left my teammates behind.” At a press conference the day after, he said, ““Unfortunately, I threw my teammates under the bus, unintentionally... Every single time I see that picture of me, standing by myself, I feel embarrassed.”

Military career

After graduating from the United States Military Academy Villanueva was commissioned into the United States Army on May 22, 2010 as a second lieutenant in the Infantry. Directly after being commissioned he attended various military schools, including the Infantry, Airborne and Ranger Schools; all located at Fort Benning, Georgia. After completing the three courses he was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, New York. It was with the 10th Mountain Division he deployed for the first time; for 12 months to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom - Afghanistan as a rifle platoon leader. As a result of his actions during this deployment he was awarded a Bronze Star Medal with “V” device for rescuing wounded soldiers while under enemy fire. When he returned from his deployment, he was reassigned as a company executive officer. Villanueva volunteered for the 75th Ranger Regiment’s Ranger Orientation Program in 2013. He was assigned to the 1st Ranger Battalion. His roles within the Battalion have included plans officer, platoon leader, and company executive officer. He has deployed two more times to Afghanistan for a total of eight months between both deployments.

One Year Until FEI World Equestrian Games™ Comes to North Carolina, USA

Tryon, NC, USA (September 12, 2017) – The one year to go countdown to the FEI World Equestrian Games™ Tryon 2018 (WEG) was launched today. With more than 500,000 people expected to attend the 2018 Games, the 12-day spectacle of equestrian champions is one of the biggest events on the global sporting calendar and will be

Opening Ceremony scheduled for September 11. In addition to announcing ticket sales, TIEC has today released a “Destination Tryon” video to showcase the region where the 2018 Games will be held. Prior to winning the bid to host WEG 2018, Polk County, North Carolina dwelt as a hidden gem, tucked away in the bucolic Blue Ridge Foothills, bordering South Carolina. Surrounded by bold mountains and scenic foothills, the area is conveniently located within an hour of top cities including Asheville and Charlotte in North Carolina and Greenville in South Carolina. The rural community now joins the league of iconic destinations around the world – like Normandy, Stockholm, Rome and Aachen – to host equestrian sport’s most distinguished championships. For WEG 2018, Bellissimo is focusing on the love of horses to bring added attention to equestrian sport and touch a broader audience of horse enthusiasts globally, highlighting the important role horses have played throughout history.

“All of our nations were discovered on the back of a horse and these amazing animals continue to provide livelihood, transportation, security, entertainment, friendship, therapy, and sport around the world. The love of the horse is universal and profound. The Games is an incredible stage to show the world how important and valuable this creature is and celebrate our relationship with them,” said Bellissimo. Fédération Equestre Internationale President Ingmar De Vos shared his excitement about the forthcoming Games at TIEC. “Marking one year to go to the FEI World Equestrian Games is always a very exciting time and we’re really looking forward to the spectacular event that Tryon will bring,” Ingmar De Vos said. “The Games are the greatest gathering of the best athletes and horses from across the globe and hundreds of thousands of people will have the opportunity to enjoy the magic of equestrian sport as world champions are crowned across the eight FEI disciplines. The USA is renowned as a country of horse lovers and is also hugely successful in the sport so we are delighted to have this, the FEI’s flagship event, back in America once again.”

NRHA announces 2018 Hall of Fame Honoree September 07, 2017 - Following the presentation of the Hall of Fame Committee’s recommended nominees, the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Board of Directors and past Hall of Fame inductees voted to approve Vaughn Zimmerman for induction into the NRHA Hall of Fame in 2018. A lifetime member since 1994, NRHA Million Dollar Owner Vaughn Zimmerman of Rogersville, Missouri, served on the initial board of the Reining Horse Foundation (RHF) from 2001 through 2004 and is an

His recommendation to the NRHA Board created the Million Dollar Owners award in an effort to recognize and encourage owners’ long-time involvement in the sport. regional and major events such as the Tulsa Reining Classic and the High Roller Reining Classic. He has provided support to NRHA Affiliates through donations of his stallion breedings to many breeding program auctions. In addition to owning top caliber performance horses, Zimmerman consistently brings highly sought-after consignments to the NRHA Markel Insurance Futurity Sales. In 2011, he consigned the top seller, Commanders Lil Step, who sold for $200,000. The next year, he consigned Not Ruf At All. However, he made what can certainly be deemed now as a very wise decision and chose to keep the colt, who went on to win the 2013 NRHA Futurity, 2014 NRHA Derby, and 2016 NRBC. Zimmerman is also involved in other areas of the horse industry including reined cow horse and Throroughbred race horses, but his passion is the reining horse. His contributions have made, and will continue to make, reining a great sport. He has paved the way for his grandchildren -- Taylor and Jacob Zimmerman -- to continue the Zimmerman reining legacy. Both are very active in aged events, and they also share the same passion Vaughn has for reining. NRHA will proudly honor the 2018 inductee during the 2018 NRHA Winter Meeting to be held February in Oklahoma City. We may have different tack, but our great traditions are the same.

Certainly, things differ about ranching from region to region. For example, there are Texas- and Arizona cowboys and gear (split reins, shotguns, taco-style hat creases and Association trees), and then you've got your buckaroo/ Great Basin cowboys (if you think flat hats and slick-fork saddles, you’re in the right neighborhood), and your Californio cowboys (tortilla hats, big horns, reins and romal, and armitas). There are also those who kind of just pick and choose what they love about that gear, the traditions, those “ways of doing things,” and try to make it their own. As different as all those styles are, including the horsemanship aspect, there are plenty of things in ranching that are similar. You’ve got kind, hardworking, handy people the country over, who enjoy making solid, dependable ranch horses or bridle horses. Some will start in the snaffle, advance to the hackamore, then to the two-rein, until they’re straight up in a spade bit, and some will take the Californio route, by skipping the snaffle altogether – choosing to start their colts in a bosal instead (there’s a great story about that in the August-September Performance Horse Journal). And there are plenty of people who go from a snaffle or side pull to a curb bit. Pretty much everyone who ranches and works their cattle horseback has roped at one time or another, and they’re very often a handy team roper, a handier ranch roper and, maybe, they’re even good in the show ring. There’s even a handful of people who live on ranches who run barrels, ride broncs and can throw a dang fine houlihan. The things that remain steady, regardless of who you are or where you ranch, are Quarter Horses, great dogs, great friends, quality gear and a lifestyle that’s often imitated but rarely duplicated.

OCTOBER OCTOBER2017 2017

The regional differences between ranches – gear and tradition aside – fascinate me. Folks in some parts of the country will start calving in February. Some, like us, not until the 15th of April, and some are even later yet. Everyone has their reasons for why they do things the way they do – oftentimes born out of tradition or necessity. East of the river in South Dakota, you’ll find that a lot of the farmers that run cattle calve them earlier because they don’t want calving to coincide with planting crops. We choose not to calve until the middle of April so we’re not fighting those potential spring blizzards. There’s a reason why – if you look around in the spring, when the weather is nice, there are babies of multiple species everywhere. It’s because with our “hands-off” approach to calving, they’ve a better chance at survival when there’s sunshine and warmer temperatures, as opposed to below-freezing temps with potential for snow. While it seems as though this would lead to lower weaning weights, it makes more sense for our operation. By avoiding feeding hay or feeding less hay by calving later – made possible because the cow’s needs are at its peak when the grass is at premium nutrition – we are leaving more room for profit. When inputs are factored in, the difference in sale prices have been minimal for any lighter-weight calves. That’s just how we do things on this outfit – in addition to raising and making excellent ranch horses. I love and respect that everyone has their reasons for doing things. 1

Record Number of Horses Expected for Turf Paradise

The first of over 1,980 expected horses arrived today (Sept. 12) to fill the 2,046 available stalls as Turf Paradise Race Course prepares to open its 62nd season in mid-October. A 132-day race meet will run from October 14 thru May 6, 2018. Racing will be conducted primarily on five-day a week basis, Saturday thru Wednesday with a first race post of 12:55 pm.

There will be three special live race day Fridays: Nov. 1, the first day of the two-day Breeders’ Cup Championship simulcasts; the day after Thanksgiving, Nov. 24 and May 4, to accommodate the Kentucky Oaks simulcast. “This has been a record response from horsemen and issuance of stalls,” said Director of Racing, Mike Harlow. “In addition to our regulars coming back, we’ve also had an increase of trainers who’ve raced here before and are now returning after a few years absence plus an influx of new trainers, racing here for the first time.” There are seven returning trainers and a half-dozen new trainers, representing over 200 new horses. “It should be a good race meet,” Harlow added. The Top 10 trainers are expected back, headed by the 60-horse stable of Robertino Diordoro, who will be seeking his fifth consecutive trainer’s title. Others among the Top 10 trainers returning are, Miguel Silva, Jeff Metz, Joe Toye, Dan McFarlane, Kevin Eikleberry, Molly Pearson and Stetson Rushton.

NCHA Triple Crown

The National Cutting Horse Association has been working very tediously to come up with innovative ways for the members to be able to experience the great sport of “Cutting” on a limited budget, The Challenger Series is one of the shows that seems to be attracting a lot of participation, this new program gives the show producers the ability to change variables such as fees, numbers of cattle used and even the time that they have to show their horse. This makes it possible to customize shows accordingly to geographic locations and regions. To go along with this program the NCHA Marketing Department has developed a “Triple Crown Package” which will give you the opportunity to promote/advertise your Stallion, Ranch, business etc., at The Futurity, The Super Stakes and the Summer Spectacular. This is an innovative approach that we hope will give everyone an opportunity to receive some great advertising within the Triple Crown Events at an affordable price. 50

Gilbert Days Rodeo Nov.10 - 12th

Howdy rodeo fans! It’s time to dust off your cowboy boots and put on those cowboy hats as we gallop towards November and quickly approach one of Gilbert, Arizona’s most exciting homegrown events, The Gilbert Days Rodeo! My name is Taryn Cantrell and I am honored to serve as your 2017 Gilbert Day’s Rodeo Queen.

The Gilbert Days Rodeo is a three-day, actionpacked event that is rich with the history of Gilbert’s western heritage. This year, The Gilbert Promotional Corporation (GPC) is proud to present The 39th Annual Gilbert Days Rodeo. Located at Welcome Home Ranch, November 10th-12th , The Gilbert Days Rodeo is a Grand Canyon Pro Rodeo Association sponsored event that will include everything from barrel racing to bull riding. Cowgirls and cowboys from across the state and beyond will join us for three wonderful rodeo performances that the entire family will enjoy! Since its foundation in 1978, The GPC has actively promoted Gilbert’s western heritage through many different outlets, one of the most prominent being education. Each year Gilbert Days Rodeo Royalty travel to Gilbert elementary schools and share with students Gilbert’s rich farming and ranching heritage, the sport of rodeo, and the importance of “Kickin’ Up Kindness” in their community. 39 years later, The GPC still upholds the spirit of Gilbert’s western heritage and as Gilbert continues to grow and thrive; members of the GPC are proud and honored to keep our beloved rodeo, an integral part of Gilbert, Arizona’s history, alive. Gilbert Days Rodeo Royalty are proud to follow a theme of “Kickin’ Up Kindness,” actively looking for kind deeds done by others that make our community a wonderful place. Imposed by the 1997 Gilbert Day’s Rodeo Queen, Shanda Brady Riggs, the “Kickin’ Up Kindness” platform has continued to inspire and encourage GPC and community members alike to become “kind deed detectives” and seek out the good in everyday life. When asked why The Gilbert Days Rodeo is important to her, GPC member Kendra Diegan says, “the Gilbert Days Rodeo is important to me for various reasons. However, the most important reason to me is kindness. Kindness to others through education and kindness to the community by giving back in a lot of ways, especially to those who give, or who have given of their time, talents and service! The Gilbert Days Rodeo is a special kind of event!” I could agree with Kendra more! On behalf of the Gilbert Promotional Corporation and as your 2017 Gilbert Days Rodeo Queen, I would like to extend a warm welcome and invitation to the 2017 Gilbert Days Rodeo. I hope you will join us for any of our various Gilbert Days Rodeo events! A full schedule of rodeo performances can be found at gilbertdays.org and on Facebook at “Gilbert Days Rodeo.” Until rodeo time in November, keep “Kickin’ up Kindness” in your community! Your 2017 Gilbert Days Rodeo Queen, Taryn Cantrell

and was trained by James Padgett II, who the day prior also won the All American Derby (G1) with Hold Air Hostage and the All American Gold Cup (G1) with reigning world champion Jessies First Down. “The filly always has trouble with the break and it takes a little while to start her running,” Alvarez said. “But today she put everything together. We knew she could run 440, and she proved it today. She got the lead probably about 250 yards and then just pulled away.” Bigg Daddy held well for second, and Hotstepper was a neck back in third. Hes Limitless was fourth, followed by Mr Secret Glory, Uptown Dynasty, Shakem Bye Perry, Hawkeye, Dash For Stone and Believe Me Irene. Fly Baby Fly is a sorrel daughter of champion and world championsire One Famous Eagle out of the champion Walk Thru Fire mare Higher Fire. She was bred by Julianna Hawn Holt of Blanco, Texas. From his first crop, One Famous Eagle also produced 2012 All American Futurity winner One Dashing Eagle. “She showed her true talent today, and I think there is still some more horse there,” said co-owner Bennie Jeter, who with wife Terri owns the horse in partnership with Deena Todd. This is Fly Baby Fly’s fifth career start, and her third victory. She made her career debut in the Ruidoso Futurity (G1) trials, running third in her trial. She then qualified to the Rainbow Futurity (G1), and finished fourth in the final. She won her All American Futurity trial and ultimately was the 10th fastest qualifier for the race. With the $1,500,000 first-place check, her career earnings now stand at $1,585,200. Fly Baby Fly’s ownership partnership paid $180,000 for the filly at last year’s Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. Her half-brother by Corona Cartel, A Galaxy Guardian, was the high seller at this year’s sale, bringing a top bid of $320,000. Bigg Daddy is a gelding by Big Daddy Cartel out of champion Alice K White, a daughter of First Down Dash. Ridden by G.R. Carter Jr., he was trained by Wes Giles for owners Too For Too Partnership. Bigg Daddy was bred by MJ Farms, the owner and breeder of All American Juvenile winner Jesse Lane.

Shane Doan named Grand Marshall of Arizona Fiesta Bowl Parade

Applications open for equestrian groups to participate and celebrate this year’s “Champions of the Community” theme

SCOTTSDALE, AZ –Arizona Coyotes legend Shane Doan will be the Grand Marshal of the 47th Annual National Bank of Arizona Fiesta Bowl Parade on December 30, 2017. As Grand Marshal, Doan will lead this year’s parade through the two-mile parade route in central Phoenix. The National Bank of Arizona Fiesta Bowl Parade Grand Marshal honors an individual or group whose vision aligns with the Fiesta Bowl’s commitment to the community. During his

career, Doan’s impact on the ice was immeasurable and his contributions to the Valley and desire to grow the game of hockey in Arizona have made him a true champion of the community, aligning with this year’s Parade theme. “The Fiesta Bowl Parade is an Arizona icon and I’m honored to serve as this year’s Grand Marshal. During my playing career, I never had the chance to experience the Fiesta Bowl Parade and, for my first one, it’ll be incredible to lead the way,” Doan said. “Arizona is a special community and since I first moved here 20 years ago, the people have welcomed me with open arms. We’re proud to call it our home and give back in any way we can.” Doan is the longest-term professional athlete in Arizona history, spending 20 years in the Valley with Coyotes. Drafted by the Winnipeg Jets in 1995, Doan made the move with the team when they relocated to the Valley and spent 21 years as a Phoenix/Arizona Coyote, announcing his retirement last week. As one of the most decorated players and captains in hockey history, Doan is the all-time leader in many categories for the Winnipeg Jets/Arizona 60

Coyotes franchise including, 1,540 games, 402 goals, 570 assists and 128 power-play goals. “Shane Doan has been a first-class ambassador for the state of Arizona throughout his career, both on and off the ice. He is the perfect choice to be Grand Marshal for this year’s parade as he represents the values of the Fiesta Bowl organization,” said Mike Nealy, executive director of the Fiesta Bowl. Every year, a combination of more than 2,500 men, women, children, floats, balloons and animals participate in the National Bank of Arizona Fiesta Bowl Parade. The Fiesta Bowl once again invites and encourages groups to submit an application by September 22, 2017, to be a part of the 47th Annual National Bank of Arizona Fiesta Bowl Parade. “Part of what makes the Parade so special is that groups from within our community get to be a part of the parade and each year, the event comes together as a direct result of the community, the dedicated volunteers and the support from National Bank of Arizona and 3TV,” Nealy said.

Groups from Arizona, California, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico and the competing universities in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl create unique parade floats, march in high school and university bands,

public with premium and reserved seating available for $25. The event is broadcast live on 3TV. First staged in 1972, the National Bank of Arizona Fiesta Bowl Parade is one of the Valley’s longstanding traditions and for the fourth consecutive year, the Fiesta Bowl will partner with National Bank of Arizona as title sponsor. “We are thrilled to be back as title partner for the National Bank of Arizona Fiesta Bowl Parade,” said Curt Hansen, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at National Bank of Arizona. “Building community is a primary focus for NB|AZ and by continuing to partner with the Fiesta Bowl in this Valley tradition, we are supporting the thousands of volunteers, participants, organizations and fans that make this event so special.” The National Bank of Arizona Fiesta Bowl Parade will begin a day filled with Fiesta Bowl festivities leading up to the 47th Annual PlayStation Fiesta Bowl, scheduled to kickoff at 2:00 p.m. For more information about the event, the application process and to purchase tickets, please visit www.fiestabowl.org/events/ fiesta-bowl-parade/.

Is Nutrient Digestibility affected by Antibiotic Use in Horses?

Jerry Key

The NCHA is sad to announce that Jerry Key of Weatherford, TX passed away on Saturday, August 19th. Jerry has been involved with the NCHA since 1972. He has trained several horses who have wildly succeeded in the cutting horse industry, as well as made several futurity semi-finals appearances. Jerry Key was heavily involved with the NYCHA and enjoyed watching the younger generations of cutters grow. Our hearts are with the Key family during this time.

This experiment was designed to test whether chronic administration of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim (SMZ) affects digestibility in mature horses. Four horses were divided into two groups and fed a complete pelleted diet either with or without SMZ for a four-week period. During the last five days of the period, both feed and feces were sampled and analyzed for chemical content. Chronic SMZ supplementation did not affect the digestibility of any of the nutrients measured in this study. None of the horses showed any signs of digestive upset while receiving the SMZ. This report of KER’s 1993 research was published in Proceedings of the 13th Equine Nutrition and Physiology Society Symposium.

Methods of curing and storing hay greatly influence its appropriateness for horses. Other factors also affect hay quality including plant type (grasses versus legumes), stage of maturity, leaf-to-stem ratio, and presence of mold, weeds, and other foreign material. The key to properly cured hay lies predominantly in moisture content. For best results, hay should not

be baled until there is less than 20% moisture. Hay baled too wet might mold, heat, and pose a fire risk. Conversely, hay baled too dry might lose its nutritional value through broken or fallen leaves. Rain is the bane of a hay harvester’s existence, and it can cause extensive nutrient losses, especially to vitamins A and E,

protein, and certain carbohydrates. Though the color of hay is not the end-all, be-all method for determining hay quality (that would be forage analysis by a laboratory), color is a useful indicator of nutritive value. Green. Without question, the most desirable color of hay is bright green. Greenness indicates

the hay was not subjected to any adverse conditions during curing or storage, thereby suggesting the forage is nutritious and free of molds. Green hay is often rife with carotene, a precursor to vitamin A, and vitamin E.

Yellow. If hay is yellow, there is a likelihood that it was overmature when cut or was exposed to rain during the curing process. If the hay was rained on, it is not only susceptible to leaching of nutrients but also mold proliferation, which can cause gastrointestinal and respiratory problems such as colic, coughing, or heaves. In other instances, yellowing might be due to sun-bleaching, which occurs when stored hay is exposed to direct sunlight. Sun-bleaching decreases carotene content and palatability of the discolored hay. Sun damage usually affects only the outside of bales, so much of the hay in these bales is probably salvageable. Brown. Nutritious hay is rarely, if ever, brown. If a tobacco-like odor accompanies extremely offcolored hay, this is likely due to overheating during storage caused by excessive moisture and fungal growth. Palatability of low-quality brown hay is usually poor. Due to the predisposition to mold and unpalatability, this hay should not be fed to horses. Not all horses require bright green, nutrient-dense hay. In fact, equine nutritionists are adamant that forage selection be based on individual needs. An overweight pony does not need to stand knee-deep in fluorescent alfalfa (lucerne) for two-thirds of the day, and a thinnish lactating mare needs more than last year’s yellowing meadow grass to keep her in milk. Other factors also affect hay quality including plant type (grasses versus legumes), stage of maturity, leaf-to-stem ratio, and presence of mold, weeds, and other foreign material. Controlling Parasites in

By Dr. Kenton Morgan, managing Veterinarian, Equine Technical Services, Zoetis

For horse owners in parasiteprone areas of the country such as the Southeast, their deworming program could be teetering on the fence of responsibly controlling parasite burden or unintentionally contributing to parasite resistance.

Within temperate environmental conditions that are key for parasite survival, horse owners may be tempted to deworm every few months in an attempt to reduce their horse’s parasite risks; however, by deworming every few months, horse owners can inadvertently do more harm than good — increasing the horse’s risk for parasite resistance. When parasites are overexposed to certain active ingredients, they can become resistant, leaving fewer effective treatment options. To determine prevalence of anthelmintic (deworming treatment) resistance, a 2004 study examined 786 horses on 44 farms across Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Kentucky and Louisiana. Fecal egg count reduction tests were conducted, and results demonstrated farms with anthelmintic-resistant cyathostomes (encysted small strongyles) was highest at 97.7% for fenbendazole (Panacur®, Safe-Guard®). The prevalence of

resistance found in the study is higher than previously reported, which suggests a growing problem of parasite resistance.1 The Gluck Equine Research Center evaluated the safety of moxidectin, the active ingredient in Quest® and Quest® Plus Gel, as well as other products. Examining inflammatory reaction within the intestinal walls, the studies suggest moxidectin presents very little inflammatory response in the large intestinal walls, thus offering a safer choice for treatment of horses with large burden of encysted small strongyles. “Similarly, moxidectin may qualify as drug of choice for treatment of larval cyathostominosis, and could possibly replace the long-term treatment regimes involving several alternations between fenbendazole and ivermectin that were previously suggested. However, further studies are needed to verify these assumptions fully,” according to the report. 2 With just a single dose, Quest and Quest Plus Gel continue to demonstrate safety and efficacy in treating and controlling encysted small strongyles, bots and roundworms. 3,* Because every horse is unique, I encourage horse owners to work with their veterinarian to perform an annual fecal egg count (FEC) test to determine their horse’s parasite levels and efficacy of treatment. The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) considers an FEC test to

n Horses, Without Contributing to Resistance be the best assessment of parasite burden to identify the frequency of treatment needed. Once a baseline is established, horse owners can work with their veterinarian to develop an Individualized Deworming™ plan tailored to their horse’s needs. The following factors contribute to equine parasite risk and, with an FEC test, can be used to determine your horse’s individualized deworming plan: · Environmental conditions: In rainy, temperate areas, horses may experience a higher incidence for parasites, as such conditions are an ideal environmental support of the parasite, lending itself to more parasite life cycles per season.

Horse’s age: The AAEP recommends foals receive their first deworming at 2 to 3 months of age and be redosed every three months. Strongid® Paste is safe for foals and pregnant mares, and helps to effectively remove roundworms, the No. 1 parasite concern for foals.4 Manure management: For minimal parasite risk, horses can be stabled in a paddock with little to no grass or in a frequently cleaned stall. Removal of manure from the premises can reduce the number of parasite eggs and larvae within the environment. Yearlings and 2-year-olds should continue to be treated as “high”

shedders (those with an FEC of 500 or above) and receive three to four yearly treatments. Horse owners can determine deworming needs for mature horses with an FEC test, conducted by the horse’s veterinarian, to identify the frequency of deworming treatment needed to target small strongyles, tapeworms, bots and spirurid nematodes, which are responsible for causing summer sores (Habronema spp. and Draschia spp). For additional information and resources, visit QuestHorse. com. Do not use Quest Gel or Quest Plus Gel in foals less than 6 months of age or in sick, debilitated and underweight horses. Do not use in other animal species, as severe adverse reactions, including fatalities in dogs, may result.

Congress Continues to Promote Land Access, Gives Momentum to “Trails Act” Victory

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Rep. Rob Bishop (R-UT) introduced the “Recreation Not Red-Tape Act (RNR)” (S. 1633, H.R. 3400), legislation that expands the scope of the National Forest System Trails Stewardship Act (PL 114-245), signed into law in late 2016. While the RNR focuses on streamlined permitting to access public lands, the bill includes provisions that would authorize the Department of the Interior, through the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), to enter into cooperative agreements with private parties to promote the role of volunteers in trail maintenance. The bill also authorizes the Department of Agriculture (USDA) and BLM to develop an interagency trail management plan that will assure uniform maintenance standards for trails crossing jurisdictional lines between the two agencies. The Trails Act outlines a detailed program including goals and timetables by which the USDA will leverage private partners to clear trails long overdue for maintenance. Unlike the RNR Act, which applies to both the BLM and USDA’s National Forest System (NFS), the Trails Act focuses only on trails under the jurisdiction of the NFS.

Chairman Bishop and Sen. Wyden worked closely on the bill to emphasize key issues – especially outdoor recreation permit streamlining – that will likely attract bipartisan support. GOP staff with the House Natural Resources Committee, which is the committee of jurisdiction for federal land issues, are encouraging AHC and allies to help drive cosponsors for the legislation, which currently has none. Committee staff also state that the Subcommittee on Federal Lands will conduct a markup in late September or October, giving members the opportunity to offer technical corrections and amendments to the text.

$105,000 halter prize money at 2017 AQHA World Show

With $105,000 in additional added prize money, plus top exhibitor awards up for grabs, there are plenty of reasons to enter your halter horse in the 2017 Lucas Oil AQHA World Championship Show.

The $55,000 added to the amateur halter division was made possible by the generous donations by 10year cumulative breeders Steve and Kathy Headley of Bloomington,

Indiana, who donated $25,000; and 30-year cumulative breeder Terry Bradshaw, and his wife, Tammy, who donated $30,000. The $50,000 added to the open halter division was donated by 30year cumulative breeders Gary and Linda Gordon of Fossil Gate Farms, Roanoke, Texas. New this year, $2,500 will go to

the top Adequan® Level 2 open halter exhibitor, as well as the top halter amateur from the AQHA Level 2 Championships, presented by Adequan® (polysulfated glycosaminoglycan). “The future of the halter industry is near and dear to the breeders who generously donated this added money,” said AQHA Chief Show

Officer Pete Kyle. “To support the horses that will have an impact on the next generations of halter horses, more money will be distributed to the mare and stallion classes.” The deadline to enter the 2017 Lucas Oil World and Adequan® Level 2 Championships is September 15. For more information about the event, visit www.aqha.com/ worldshow.

Despite the introduction of stem cell therapy to the equine industry and the barrage of success stories following in its wake, many questions continue to plague equine researchers, veterinarians, and owners of injured horses. Further, harvesting stem cells derived from fetal tissues does not involve an invasive procedure and can be used immediately in sick foals or saved for later use.For example, from where should stem cells be harvested, bone marrow or

Use of Fetal Stem Cells in Equine Rehabilitation

adipose tissue? Should stem cells be cultured, should a commercial kit be used so that stem cells can be injected quickly into the horse, or should a combination of both be employed? Would fetal-derived stem cells be a better option? “Stem cell therapy has become a common treatment modality for a variety of musculoskeletal

injuries in horses, including bowed tendons. Injuries to the superficial digital flexor tendon, among others, are notoriously challenging to heal, require months of lay-up, and are prone to reinjury. Stem cell research suggests improved healing rates and decreased chances of reinjury following therapy rather than relying on

rest and rehabilitation alone,” explained Catherine Whitehouse, M.S., a nutrition advisor for Kentucky Equine Research (KER) in Versailles, Kentucky. In human medicine, many parents elect to “bank” stem cells from fetal tissues at the time of birth. Still not as popular in the equine industry, one recent study* shows that stem cells derived from fetal tissues rather than an older horse’s own bone marrow or adipose tissue might, in fact, be more effective when treating an injury. In their publication, the researchers reported that stem cells derived from amniotic membranes or the material contained within the umbilical cord, referred to as Wharton’s jelly, had beneficial properties compared with bone or adipose-derived adult stem cells.

“The stem cells from fetal tissues are intermediate between embryonic and adult cells, and they appear to have an improved ability over adult stem cells to spur the development of a variety of tissue types, such as bone and cartilage,” Whitehouse said. Further, harvesting stem cells derived from fetal tissues does not involve an invasive procedure and can be used immediately in sick foals or saved for later use, such as the management of musculoskeletal conditions later in life. “Another way of protecting a horse’s musculoskeletal system is through the prophylactic administration of oral joint health supplements containing glucosamine, chondroitin, omega-3 fatty acids, and hyaluronic acid,” advised Whitehouse. “KER offers products containing each of these key ingredients that can help protect joints and soft tissues from injury and slow the progression of osteoarthritis.” Look for KER’s safe and effective joint supplements that ingredients known to prophylactically protect joints, including KER•Flex, with chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine hydrochloride; Synovate HA with high-molecular weight hyaluronic acid; and EO•3, a marine-derived source of both DHA and EPA. Australian horse owners should look for these research proven supplements. *Iacono, E., L. Pascucci, B. Rossi, et al. TRUCK TALK By Nate Brekken

Take care of the heart of your four wheel drive You may have seen a post on our

Facebook page recently about a Duramax truck getting a transfer case half. Why did it need this you may ask? Well, it had a crack on the same spot as the drain plug and it was leaking. Typically, this is not a common spot for these to leak. This is a pipe plug or pipe thread and it should only be torque to specification when tightening. Was this plug over tightened? Was it a failure of old age? Hard to say, but the repair had to be done none the less. While we were in this transfer case we were able to take care of another more common concern. The pump that lubricates the transfer case is not given a fair shake for allowing the pump case to last. This pump is held in place by a small rattle clip that breaks on a lot of trucks. This clip was still in good shape on this unit, but if it breaks, the pump vibrates back and forth in the housing/case eventually wearing a hole in the rear transfer case half. The pump upgrade kit allows a wider cross

section of contact for the pump to ride in the rear case half with, it also allows us to install a new antirattle clip which will help keep the pump from vibrating in the housing. This repair we did was twofold had the crack not been in the case we would have not recommended the pump repair. Having this new upgrade will keep this transfer case going for a long time. How can you save your transfer case from needing these repairs? Keep the fluid changed regularly, out of all the maintenance we do

Nate Brekken by far the transfer case is the most forgotten fluid out there. With only three quarts of fluid the service is not that expensive. Keeping this fluid clean will hopefully allow you to enjoy your four-wheel drive truck for many years to come. Strictly Diesel can help, give us a call today 623-582-4404, or e mail us at sales@strictlydiesel.com. We would love to help you with any of your transfer case needs.

Home Run! Metallic Cat Sells to Rocking P Ranch

On September 20 the legendary cutting stallion Metallic Cat sold in what is surely one – if not the – biggest sale transactions in the cutting horse industry. That afternoon, the star horse unloaded at his new home at Rocking P Ranch in Fort Worth, Texas. Alvin and Becky Fults, who owned and promoted Metallic Cat since he was a 3-year-old, officially sealed the deal with new owner Bobby Patton in negotiations brokered by Jeremy Barwick, owner of Western Bloodstock.

“This is a very emotional day for us,” said Becky Fults. “This horse was our whole life for nine years, and he has impacted our family in more ways than I can begin to express. This was the biggest and hardest decision of our lives.” With business interests in gas, oil, insurance and ranching, Patton is a partner of Guggenheim Baseball Management, which in April 2012 purchased the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 2015, Patton slid into a the sport of cutting when he bought leading cutting sire Boon San in Walton’s Rocking W Ranch Absolute Dispersal Sale. Then in 2016 he purchased Spots Hot, the 2004 NCHA Open Futurity Champion, earner of $529,435 and sire 2016 NCHA Open Futurity winner Second Spot. Now, Patton is ecstatic about his latest cutting horse player, “I’m excited! That’s what I’m feeling, more than anything else,” Patton said. “I was really excited when Clayton Kershaw signed his contracts and he was going to be a Dodger for a very long time, and I think this is a similar feeling,” Patton said, referring to when the team signed the superstar player in a 7-year, $215 million deal. “I really do think Metallic Cat might be the Clayton Kershaw of the cutting horse business.” Indeed, Metallic Cat has set the big leagues on fire. With just four foal crops of show age, the 12-year-old stallion has already amassed $15,455,922 in offspring earnings, according to Robin Glen Pedigrees. No other cutting stallion has earned that much that fast. He was 2016 National Cutting Horse Association Sire of the Year, and at the end of that season stood at No. 13 on the list of all-time leading cutting sires. “He is an once-in-a-lifetime horse,” Alvin Fults confirmed. “He has impacted the industry, and we are so humbled by his tremendous success. In every way, he has surpassed our expectations.” Patton explained that Jesse Lennox, resident trainer at Rocking P Ranch, played a part in the acquisition. “We’ve got two Metallic Cat 2-year-olds in the barn that are unbelievable, and Jesse thinks they’re as good a pair of 2-year-olds that he’s ever seen. That went a long way in my decision to buy this horse.” As for how the Fults came to own Metallic Cat, in 2008 they struck a deal to purchase the stallion, who was a 3-year-old at the time. This happened one year after Galyean used his truck as collateral to obtain a bank loan to buy the good-looking, red roan cutting prospect, which he found in a classified listing on the Internet. By High Brow Cat and out of Peptoboonsmal daughter Chers Shadow, Metallic Cat hit a home run at 92

the 2008 NCHA Futurity when he and Galyean won the Open division and $250,000. Many victories followed and the stallion retired the same year with $637,711 in cutting earnings. Right away, Alvin and Becky started promoting their young stallion. “The very first year we stood him there were people who took a risk on him,” Becky said. “We are forever grateful to all those mare owners.” (That faith was rewarded. Today, according to Equistat, 35 of Metallic Cat’s first-crop foals have earned a combined $2.9 million.) Yes, Metallic Cat was a star player in the cutting sport. Yes, he’s a stellar sire and a record-setter. But according to Becky, he’s so much more “Metallic Cat was truly family, and he impacted every single one of us – he changed our lives,” she explained. “And so many people are a part of our family – including Beau and Ashley Galyean, Dr. Gregg Veneklasen, Debbie Roberts of Spurs in taking his marketing to a whole new level, along with all of the people who have helped at our ranch. Also, we thank all of the mare owners who bred to Denver [Metallic Cat’s barn name], along with the trainers and owners who purchased, trained and believed in Metallic Cat’s foals. We appreciate all the fans who followed Metallic Cat and sent letters. We are just very thankful to everyone who made our dream come true.” Patton is looking forward to the arrival of his horse. “I’m definitely going to hug him!” Patton said happily, adding that he plans to get his picture taken with Metallic Cat the moment he unloads at the ranch – just like he did with Spots Hot and Boon San. “I look forward to adding this one to the collection.” Metallic Cat will live at Rocking P Ranch until the 2018 breeding season. That’s when he and Spots Hot go to Brazos Valley Stallion Station in Stephenville, Texas, an operation owned by Jeremy and Candace Barwick. Patton enjoys having his horses at home as much as possible, and he looks forward to what happens next. “I love the cutting industry and I like to ride the horses,” Patton said. “But I really enjoy the business aspect of cutting. I am intrigued by the economics of the stud business, and that’s what opened my eye to the possibility of owning a great stallion such as Metallic Cat. I’m confident that Metallic Cat is ultimately going to be the best sire in the cutting horse business, and I’m just so very grateful to have the opportunity to own him. Patton was thanked by the Fults, and added that he understood the gravity of their decision to sell the special stallion. “I think it was an emotional decision for them, and I know they’re sad their baby is headed south to Fort Worth,” Patton said. “I was worried they were going to change their minds. All I can say, I hope they know he has a good home.” “It gives us peace that he will have a wonderful home,” Becky said tearfully. “Congratulations to Rocking P Ranch. They now own a once-ina-lifetime stallion.” For more information about Metallic Cat, please visit www. metalliccat.com

Every year, hundreds of horses die from illnesses that could have been prevented through vaccination. Saddened and frustrated by the needless loss of horse lives, one group of researchers* created a survey to find out what’s stopping owners from vaccinating against preventable diseases. Based on the results of that survey, the key reasons owners declined recommended vaccines included: Concerns regarding the safety of vaccines and the potential for vaccine reactions, including death; Cost of the vaccines; and Lack of perceived risk of infection, making vaccination unnecessary. In addition, some respondents suggested a financial arrangement between the pharmaceutical companies that manufacture the vaccine and veterinarians who administer it (and thereby benefit financially).

In the United States, rabies, tetanus, the Eastern and Western equine encephalitis viruses (EEE and WEE, respectively), and the West Nile virus (WNV) all fall under the umbrella term “core vaccines,” according to the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP). This means that almost every horse the United States should be vaccinated against these diseases, and yet they are not. In 2016, 377 horses were diagnosed with WNV according to the United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. More horses were likely affected, but because laboratory samples were not collected and submitted, those cases were not included in the overall count. In Australia, a similar situation occurs with the Hendra virus which can cause serious disease and fatalities in both horses and humans. The Queensland Department for Agriculture and Fisheries and the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries clearly states that vaccination is “the single most effective way of reducing the risk of Hendra virus infection in horses. Many equestrian events and facilities

OCTOBER 2017

require full vaccination as a condition of entry. ” Adoption of the vaccine by horse owners, however, has been slow. Researchers suggest that the majority of horses remain unvaccinated, estimating only 11-17% of horses are fully vaccinated in endemic Hendra areas. When survey respondents were asked what would make them reconsider vaccination, 37-49% would vaccinate if the vaccine was either free or less expensive, if they could administer the vaccine themselves, or if one of their own horses or a neighbor’s/friend’s horses became infected. Other means of minimizing disease involves altering management practices. For example, not turning out horses at dusk and dawn can help minimize the chances of mosquitoes transmitting EEE, WEE, or WNV to a horse. In the case of the Hendra virus, owners are advised to reduce contact between horses and flying foxes by covering food and water sources in the paddock, removing horses from pasture when bats are most active, and eliminating access by horses to fruiting and flowering trees. Unfortunately, even these strategies prove difficult to implement, with many horse owners reporting recommended strategies as ineffective and impractical. In sum, the survey results suggested that some owners believe vaccines can be unsafe and are unnecessary. In reality, reactions to vaccines occur only rarely, and the benefits of vaccination far outweigh the risks. Diagnosing and treating horses for diseases that could have been prevented, loss of use, and loss of life cost more than a lifetime of vaccines. “To maximize a horse’s response to vaccination, consider supplementing horses with omega-3 fatty acids such as EO•3 or maintaining horses on a higher quality feed that supports immune health, like KER Brand Alliance Partner products,” advised Kathleen Crandell, Ph.D., a nutritionist for Kentucky Equine Research (KER). *Manyweathers, J., H. Does protein digestion differ in horses of different ages? Does excess protein lead to thyroid problems? As you know, protein plays an integral role in growth, muscle development, and performance. Too little protein can stunt growth, affect muscle function, alter hormone function, and reduce nutrient transport. On the other hand, too much dietary protein increases ammonia output and adversely affects respiratory health, disrupts acid-base

How do Horses

process excess protein?

balance, and can potentially decrease bone mineralization. Excess nitrogen resulting from protein metabolism is excreted as urea in urine. The higher protein content causes an increase in water consumption, leading to more frequent urination. This is evidence that protein is not stored in the body for later use like fats and carbohydrates. Many factors are involved in the

calculation of protein requirements, including digestibility of protein, amino acid content of protein, protein to energy ratio of the diet, and age and life stage of the horse. Mature horses, both idle and working, have relatively low protein requirements compared to other life stages. A horse in light work, for example, requires between 8-10% protein in the total diet (about 769 g). This level can

easily be achieved by a diet of goodquality forage. The NRC provides the following equation for calculating crude protein (CP) requirements for mature, idle horses: body weight (BW) x 1.26 g CP/kg BW/d. Research shows that the true digestibility of protein in a variety of mature horse diets averaged 71%. In senior horses, decreased digestibility of protein can occur for several reasons. The effectiveness of the intestinal lining decreases with age, which makes it difficult for nutrients to pass the mucosal surface in order to reach the bloodstream. Research has documented a decreased absorption of phosphorus, vitamins, and protein in aged horses. Additionally, horses with parasite damage have compromised digestive tracts that negatively affect nutrient absorption. The common occurrence of muscle loss in geriatric horses can be expedited without proper protein levels. These are all reasons why feeds labeled for senior horses tend to have higher protein content. The quality of the protein source is a key factor in meeting the horse’s amino acid requirements; highquality protein sources are those that contain an assortment of amino acids that approximate the needs of the horse. Soybean meal is included in most feeds and considered the gold standard. When basing the nutrient values of hay on average values collected from Equi-Analytical, a forage-testing laboratory, it is important to remember that the actual nutrient content of your hay will differ. For instance, a stemmy, mature hay may contain less protein than expected, which is why commercial feeds are formulated to make up for some nutrient deficits. Ration balancers provide goodquality protein, macrominerals, trace minerals, and vitamins at the appropriate levels to complement forages of unknown quality when fed at 1-2 lb (0.45-0.9 kg) per day. Lastly, you asked about the effect of excess protein on the thyroid. Levels of certain nutrients— protein, zinc, copper, and iodine, for example—can influence thyroid function. Working with a veterinarian to determine if your horse has thyroid malfunction is your best bet, especially if you suspect hypothyroidism.

NED LEDOUX releasing first full length album Sagebrush Nov 3rd Sagebrush Includes Eight Original Songs And His Cover of His Dad Chris LeDoux’s Iconic Signature “This Cowboy’s Hat” Featuring Chase Rice

NASHVILLE, TN – Sept 6, 2017 – Ned LeDoux blazes his own trail forward ‪on November 3 with the release of his first full-length album Sagebrush which carries on the traditions, music and cowboy way of life passed down to him by his Mom and Dad, Peggy and Chris LeDoux. Produced by award-winning Mac McAnally, Sagebrush completes and follows on the heels of his debut EP Forever A Cowboy released last year. Ned wrote or cowrote eight of the 12 songs included on Sagebrush, and each song leaves no doubt as to what the LeDoux name stands for in country music. Sagebrush is a labor of love and a year in the making for Ned LeDoux. The Kaycee, Wyoming native wrote his first song with his songwriting and producer mentor Mac McAnally. After that Ned continued to write about his own life experiences, all the while maintaining his western style and staying true to the cowboy way of life he has always known, as in the song “Forever A Cowboy.” Ned continued to write of his time spent on the road reflected in “Brother Highway,” and about one of the most important things in his life in the love song “By My Side,” about his love and devotion for his wife and growing family. Ned’s mom, Peggy, gave him a shoebox full of what seemed to be song ideas his Dad had written down years ago. Ned prefers to call them his Dad’s “thoughts.” No one will ever know what his dad intended, but Ned took them and, with McAnally, turned them in to a variety of songs including 100

In country music, a last name like LeDoux casts a big, storied and bittersweet shadow, but it’s one Ned LeDoux doesn’t mind standing in one bit. Having been a drummer in his dad Chris’ band Western Underground since 1998, Ned knew from an early age that he had “no plan b” but to play music, “Once I got the taste of the road, and being in front of a crowd and just the sound of it, it was…freedom.” When his dad passed away in 2005 from cancer, Ned continued to tour with his father’s band to keep the musical spirit of Chris LeDoux alive. This drove him to pick up the guitar and try his hand at some of his dad’s songs. It started with “Rodeo Man,” and before long Ned had a whole catalogue of his father’s early hits ready to play. When the other band members heard Ned’s voice, he found himself front and center singing at the shows. Stepping out from behind the drums stirred something inside of Ned that he hadn’t felt before, “It’s a different kind of rush, getting up with a guitar and standing behind a microphone…shoot I’m getting butterflies thinking about it right now.” his Dad as a co-writer. Four of those songs appear on Sagebrush including “Never Change,” “Cowboy Life,” “Forever A Cowboy” and “We Ain’t Got It All. ”

The entire collection of songs on Sagebrush mix together well and tell of the LeDoux history and his family values- from cowboys, ranching, the highway and the simplicity of living including the song “Better Part of Living” penned by McAnally and “Another Horse to Ride,” written by Larry Bastian and Vince Pasion, which fits perfectly in the story of Sagebrush. In addition to his eight original songs, Ned’s passion for continuing and reintroducing his Dad’s music and life to a new generation of fans was helped when LeDoux’s friend and BBR Music Group recording artist Chase Rice called, out of the blue, and asked Ned if he wouldn’t mind if he recorded his Dad’s iconic signature song “This Cowboy’s Hat” for his upcoming album Lambs & Lions to be released on November 17. Ned

loved the idea, and after recording it together both agreed to include on each of their upcoming albums.

Sagebrush Track Listing: 1) “Never Change” (Ned LeDoux, Chris LeDoux, Mac McAnally) 2) “Cowboy Life” (Ned LeDoux, Chris LeDoux, Mac McAnally) 3) “We Ain’t Got It All” (Ned LeDoux, Chris LeDoux, Mac McAnally) 4) “Some People Do” (Ned LeDoux, Will LeDoux, Mac McAnally) 5) “Brother Highway” (Ned LeDoux, Mark Sissel) 6) “Better Part of Living” (Mac McAnally) 7) “Forever a Cowboy” (Ned LeDoux, Chris LeDoux, Mac McAnally) 8) “By My Side” (Ned LeDoux, Mac McAnally) 9) “Another Horse To Ride” (Larry Bastian and Vince Pasion) 10) “Johnson County War” (Chris LeDoux) 11) “The Hawk” (Ned LeDoux) 12) “This Cowboy’s Hat” (Feat. Chase Rice) (Jake Brooks) ** Fans who purchased Forever A Cowboy EP will be able to utilize the “complete your album” at iTunes and other digital retailers to purchase the six new tracks that complete Sagebrush.

About Ned LeDoux:

It has been over 12 years since Chris LeDoux passed and Ned believes that people want to hear something new. His passion for music began at the age of five when he received

OCTOBER 2017

his first drum kit. Ned went on to play in a number of different bands in Wyoming before landing a job as the drummer in his Dad Chris’s band Western Underground in 1998. Ned knew from that early age that he had “no plan b” but to play music. “Once I got the taste of the road, and being in front of a crowd and just the sound of it, it was...freedom,” he explained. When his dad passed away in 2005, Ned continued to tour with his father’s band to keep the musical spirit of Chris LeDoux alive. This drove him to pick up the guitar and try his hand at some of his dad’s songs. It started with “Rodeo Man,” and before long Ned had a whole catalogue of his father’s early hits ready to play. When the other band members heard Ned’s voice, he found himself front and center singing at the shows. Stepping out from behind the drums stirred something inside of Ned that he hadn’t felt before, “It’s a different kind of rush, getting up with a guitar and standing behind a microphone... shoot I’m getting butterflies thinking about it right now.” Carrying on with his family traditions and cowboy way of life is important to Ned as you can hear in the song “Forever A Cowboy.” Ned puts his own spin on his endless touring with “Brother Highway” about all the time he has spent on the road with various bands since his days in high school before landing full time as the drummer in his Dad’s band Western Underground. Ned says he doesn’t even need a road map anymore–that he and the highway are like brothers. He wants to write songs about what he knows, keep the themes simple and harken back to the sound of good ole country music but with an edge. Ned has been burning up the highway to bring his new music to his loyal and dedicated fans sharing the stage with artists Toby Keith, Josh Turner, Chris Janson and Randy Houser. On tour, the show is a special blend of Ned’s original songs along with a few of his Dad’s. What Your Horse Needs

Administer booster vaccinations and target deworming treatments to help protect your horse’s health. With fall approaching, it is important that you help protect your horse from emerging risks, such as equine influenza virus, equine herpesvirus (EHV) and parasites. “If you have a horse that travels for fun or competition, it’s recommended that he be vaccinated twice a year against equine influenza and equine herpesvirus to help boost his immunity,” said Kevin Hankins, DVM, senior veterinarian, Equine Technical Services for Zoetis. “For horses at increased risk, I always suggest they booster Fluvac Innovator in the fall.” While annual spring vaccinations help offer disease protection and can activate an immune response, the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) vaccination guidelines recommend at-risk horses be vaccinated for equine influenza and equine herpesvirus, also called rhinopneumonitis, every six months.1 How do you know whether your horse is considered at risk? Key disease risk factors include: Younger than 6 years old Older than 15 years old Stabled in boarding barns Traveling off-property or housed with horses that do Watch this video to learn whether your horse may need a booster vaccination. It’s important to be aware of emerging disease risks during the fall months, which can include equine influenza virus and equine herpesvirus. Equine influenza is one of the most common respiratory diseases in horses, spreading by aerosol transmission (coughing or sneezing) from horse to horse in distances as far as 50 yards.2 Like humans with a cold, horses may experience dry cough, nasal discharge, fever, depression and loss of appetite. Clinical infections of equine herpesvirus are most commonly seen in weanlings, yearlings and young horses entering training or those exposed to other horses through boarding or transport. Equine herpesvirus poses severe risks,

including respiratory infection as well as abortion, birth of weak, nonviable foals, and can lead to sporadic neurologic disease.3 Equine influenza and equine herpesvirus can lead to costly veterinary bills and increased days out of the saddle, making it all the more important to help safeguard your horse’s health with an effective, trusted vaccine. Fluvac Innovator® vaccines are the most trusted equine influenza vaccines and help provide your horse with broad protection against newly emerging and conventional equine influenza virus strains as well as equine herpesvirus (EHV‑1 and EHV‑4).4-10 Zoetis regularly tests Fluvac Innovator to ensure its vaccine continues to be effective against emerging EIV isolates. For additional peace of mind, Fluvac Innovator is backed by the Equine Immunization Support Guarantee. Equine influenza and equine herpesvirus aren’t your horse’s only threats this fall — enter parasites. Fall is a key time for equine deworming in many parts of the country. Parasite transmission decreases with cold weather and the conclusion of grazing season. Key parasites to target with fall deworming include tapeworms and bots. Horses may harbor tapeworm infections without showing signs of discomfort; however, the parasite can cause colic — from mild to severe colic episodes requiring surgical treatment.11 The AAEP recommends tapeworm treatment once a year, in the late fall or early winter.12 Quest® Plus Gel is the ideal deworming choice for late fall as it treats and controls bots, encysted small strongyles and roundworms in a single dose. Quest Plus also contains an additional active ingredient – praziquantel – that specifically targets tapeworms. To ensure protection for your horse, work with your veterinarian to identify fall booster vaccination and deworming needs. Keep your horses healthy, and save up to $8 per horse with this fall coupon when you use Zoetis equine vaccines and dewormers. Do not use Quest Gel or Quest Plus Gel in foals less than 6 months of age or in sick, debilitated and underweight horses. Do not use in other animal species, as severe adverse reactions, including fatalities in dogs, may result. About Zoetis

Pain relief for your horse. Neprofin is a revolutionary new pain treatment for the alleviation of lameness in horses. Originally formulated to work on the same scientific principles as NSAID’s and phenylbutazone (bute), these enzymes have since proven effective on sprains, fractures, rheumatoid arthritis and osterarthritis. Neprofin assists with tissue repair, reduces fluid formation, accelerates the healing process and can be adopted as a replacement therapy in pathological conditions.

USE NEPROFIN FOR:

Improved energy levels Inflammation, pain and muscle soreness Sprains, fractures, arthritic conditions Accelerated healing Great for household pets too

This mare has an old injury to the lateral side of her right front cannon bone, with deep scarring. There was extensive soft tissue damage which restricted her movement, causing a shortness of stride. This image shows visible enlargement of the soft tissue injury by its heat signature from recurrent inflammation. Note that the right leg is visibly larger than the left leg.

Following 8 weeks of Neprofin administration, this mare showed a marked improvement. Heat signatures have returned to normal, showing virtually no signs of inflammation or pain. Neprofin was able to digest and eliminate the inflamed scar tissue mass, which had caused lameness and a shortened stride. Note that both legs are now identical in size and shape. The mare is now sound and bears weight evenly on both front legs.

Jerry Olson:

Nov. 22, 1935 – Sept. 13, 2017 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Jerry Olson, who was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2001 in the contract personnel category passed away Sept. 13 in Belle Fourche, S.D. He was 81. “He was a person who when he decided he wanted something done he would get it done,” said Jerry Wayne Olson, his son. “He was dedicated to the PRCA when he was involved in rodeo, and he was determined to make things work.” Friends may leave written condolences and view a video tribute at: www. funeralhomeofthenorthernhills.com The South Dakota native is one of only three people to have worked the NFR as a contestant and specialty act. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound Olson, nicknamed the “Big Swede,” was in the ProRodeo business for 37 years. “It’s a great feeling that the selection committee felt I was in the running for such a thing,” said Olson in the July 25, 2001, issue of the ProRodeo Sports News about being selected for the Hall of Fame. “My specialty acts and my clowning were my main goals in rodeo, and I contested because I enjoyed it.”
