Shatner to Receive Dale Wilkinson Lifetime Achievement Award

In 2007, the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Hall of Fame Committee initiated the NRHA Dale Wilkinson Lifetime Achievement Award, supported by the Reining Horse Foundation (RHF). Each year, the NRHA Board of Directors and past Hall of Fame inductees vote to approve a worthy candidate for recognition. This year’s recipient is William Shatner.

William Shatner cultivated a career spanning over 50 years as an

Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actor, director, producer, screenwriter, recording artist, author and horseman. He is one of pop culture’s most recognizable figures, and for his contributions as a horseman, horse industry promoter and philanthropist, NRHA is proud to honor him with the Dale Wilkinson Lifetime Achievement Award.

Shatner’s passions for horses and philanthropy were united

through his involvement with AHEAD With Horses, a charity organization that gives physically and mentally challenged children the thrill of riding a horse—and boosts their confidence and selfesteem, often with life-changing results. For more than two decades, he has hosted the Hollywood Charity Horse Show at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. The event benefits AHEAD With Horses and other Los Angeles-based charities.

Additionally, he has been a highlevel promoter and fundraiser for the sport of reining, participating in a host of charity events for RHF. When the FEI World Equestrian Games™ came to U.S. soil, he and his wife, Elizabeth, supported the event at a high-level and cheered on reining teams from around the globe. Not only has he raised thousands of dollars for various charities, he has introduced reining to other celebrities, as well.

Tim Allen, Willie Nelson, Sarah McLaughlin and Neal McCoy are just a few of the people who have performed at the reception with the Hollywood Charity Horse Show and have been exposed to reining, thanks to Shatner’s devotion to the sport.

Shatner also has been successful as a breeder and exhibitor. A longtime dedicated breeder of American Quarter Horses, he has had smashing success with the beautiful American Saddlebred, developing and riding world champions “Sultan’s Great Day” and “Revival.” He has won numerous world championships in several equine events.

Shatner continues his involvement with film and television while still managing to find time to work with charities and further his passion for the equestrian sports. He and his wife and three adult children live in Los Angeles.

SPIRIT OF THE AWARD This award is named after the legendary reining horse trainer known as the “father of reining,” Dale Wilkinson, the first inductee into the NRHA Hall of Fame.

Wilkinson is a multiple NRHA Futurity champion and one of the founding members of NRHA.

Fischer Top Barrel Racer Over the Fourth of July

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – While the official figures for the 2018 Fourth of July run wasn’t complete until the Rooftop Rodeo in Estes Park, Colo., came to a close on July 10, it was worth the wait for Tammy Fischer who landed atop the leaderboard for WPRA Barrel Racers this year.

Fischer led all barrel racers adding $29,133 to her bank account. Making the accomplishment even more impressive is she did so without a single win but proved that being consistent and winning second place checks can add up just as quickly.

Fischer, a six-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier, is eyeing another chance to run down the alley at the Thomas and Mack.

She finished 24th in 2017 but was there helping 2017 WPRA Rookie of the Year Taci Bettis. The duo would like nothing more than to be

there together in 2018. Fisher last qualified for rodeo’s “super bowl” in 2011.

Fischer’s biggest Fourth of July check came north of the border at the Ponoka (Alberta) Stampede where she took home $11,307.

Stevi Hillman captured the win and checks totaling $19,342. Fischer’s other two big checks came at the Cody (Wyo.) Stampede and St. Paul (Ore.) Rodeo.

In Cody, Bettis and Fischer went 1-2 with times of 16.90 and 16.93 respectively. Although, her traveling partner and rodeo protégé Bettis took top honors and a check totaling $9,674, Fischer added $7,740 to her total in second place.

In St. Paul, Fischer would also take second to winner Tracy Nowlin, who finished second to Fischer in total money won over Cowboy Christmas. Fischer won $7,282 in St. Paul.

Fischer added $2,804 from the Greeley (Colo.) Stampede, another rodeo in which Nowlin landed atop the leaderboard. In 2017, Fischer landed No. 3 in the barrel racer ranking for Fourth of July with $13,681.

Nowlin won a career best $24,438 thanks to big wins in St. Paul, Ore., and Greeley, Colo.

Hillman was third with $22,572 with Ponoka being her biggest payday during the busy week. Bettis was fourth with $19,210 and reigning world champion Nellie Miller rounded out the top 5 with $15,213.

Get Out and Vote August 28th

The 2018 Election season is shaping up to be one of the most important elections in a decade. Have you done your homework?

The election is quickly approaching and there is a lot of work to be done. Are you registered to vote? Is your voter registration up-todate? Do you know where to vote and do you know who is running?

If you answered ‘no’ to any one of these, it’s time to do your homework!

It’s hard to believe but the upcoming primary elections are less than a month away. The primary election is August 28 and this is the election where many of the initial decisions are made in Arizona for our state and local offices. While I’m out campaigning, many people tell me, “I can’t wait to vote for you in November!” But I tell them that November may be too late!

As an “Independent” (someone who is not registered with a political party), you need to do one additional step to vote in the primary election – you must request either by mail, over the phone, or at the polling place, which primary ballot you would like to cast. You can vote in either the Republican or Democrat primary, but not both. My advice would be to look at who is running for office, pick your favorite candidate, and choose to vote in that candidate’s primary election. The candidate will need your vote to win the primary election, so that you can continue to support that candidate in the general election.

If you do not support the candidate that you like in August, that person may not make it to the general election. That is a fact.

Therefore, it’s time to get your calendars out and write down a few important dates.

Everyone is talking about the November election. That is the next general election. But in Arizona, we need to first talk about the primary election. A primary election is where a political party selects the candidate(s) to advance to the general election. So, the primary election is where your first choice exists to pick the candidate that you want to support for the state legislature and the statewide offices, for example.

Most of the legislative and county districts across our state are either predominantly Republican or Democrat. There are very few “competitive districts,” where Democrat and Republican voter registrations are almost equal. This means whoever wins the Republican primary, in a Republican dominated district, will have a statistical advantage to win the general election in that district or state. The same would be true in a Democrat dominated district. These are statistical predictions, which have held true in most elections. However, there are always surprises in each election, and this election cycle may be different than any other we have seen in Arizona. Long story short, if you don’t support your favorite candidate in the primary election, that person may not have enough votes to make it to the general election.

“Independents,” or people who do not register with a party are also a major factor in this cycle, for both the primary and general elections.

But first, let’s talk about the primary election. In Arizona, an “Independent” can vote in the primary election. Many people do not know this because this is not the case in other states across the country

or in the presidential preference election. Check your voter registration card. Does it read “PND” (Party Not Designated) or “U” (Undecided) or “Independent?” You can still vote in the primary!

Are you registered to vote? If you haven’t registered to vote by July 30th, you will not be eligible to vote in the next primary election. However, please make sure you register in preparation for the general election. The deadline to register to vote in time for the general election is October 9th.

You can do this in a variety of ways, but the easiest way to register to vote is online: go to http://servicearizona.com. You can also go to any post office or government office to pick up a voter registration form and return it in the mail. You would be surprised at how many people are not registered. Ask your neighbors, family and friends to register to vote. We need more people participating in the democratic process!

In Arizona, the easiest way to vote is to request a ballot in the mail. Your ballot will be mailed to your house to vote in the comfort of your own home; then simply return the ballot by sealing the envelope, sign the front, and drop it back in the mail (postage is prepaid). It is very easy! If you want to vote at home, by mail, you must request your ballot by August 17th. You will see a box on the voter registration form, marked PEVL (permanent early voter list). Mark “Yes.” You can also call the County Elections office (in Maricopa County, call 602/506-1511) or visithttp:// maricopa.vote to request a ballot and/or check your voter registration status.

God Bless the United States of America and may you and your family enjoy the final days of summer. But don’t forget to do your homework and register to vote! This month is the primary and the general election will be here before you know it!

National Championship Tournament The Arizona Quarter Horse Association is excited to announce the mid -year rankings for Showmanship, Horsemanship and Equitation exhibitors in the lead up to the National Championship Tournament being held at Sun Circuit 2019. Each division lists the individuals who were scored by the committee, as well as those currently leading the pack at this mid point of the show year. However, there are still plenty of shows to go before the final list is compiled and eligible exhibitors to the Tournament are announced.

This brand new and exciting Championship Tournament format is creating a good deal of buzz around the show world.

The hoopla of the Final Four competitions in each class will certainly be rewarding for exhibitors and entertaining for spectators. Additionally, the overall impact on showing in general could be enormous. The more an exhibitor shows throughout the entire year, the more exposure they have and the greater their opportunity is to be ranked.

The lists were formulated by compiling individual rankings from each National Championship Ranking Committee Member. This anonymous group is comprised of judges and trainers who are actively involved in these industries throughout the United States. They were regionally selected to give fair and balanced coverage across the country to rank Youth, Amateur and Select exhibitors in each of the three classes.

Exhibitors who placed in the top 5 circuit standings at participating major shows held between January 1 to July 10 were listed for Ranking Committee members to rank. Committee members could also choose to add any other exhibitor who they believed excelled in the event. The July list is preliminary, and exhibitors have the ability to rise or fall in the rankings based on show results for the rest of the year.

Final year rankings will be made in December of 2018. At that time, Ranking Committee Members will have the results from Top 20 participating shows, NSBA World show, AQHA World shows and Color breed World shows.

Individual Committee Member rankings will again be aggregated to produce the final ranking for the year. The list will name 64 exhibitors in each division. The top 25 will be ranked while the rest will be listed in alphabetical order.

All qualified individuals in the December rankings will be invited to compete in the National Championship Tournament at Sun Circuit, March 2-10, 2019. They will show concurrently with the corresponding regularly scheduled Sun Circuit classes to the first set of judges. Eligible Paints and colored horses will run in a separate draw immediately following the AQHA class.

AQHA, APHA and NSBA ownership rules must be followed 26

to exhibit in the classes. After the class, the high scoring 16 will be recognized and promoted via media as having achieved the Sensational 16 Award.

For the second round of the tournament, The Sensational 16 as well as all other exhibitors will show to the second set of Judges as a part of the regular draw at Sun Circuit.

After the class, the high scoring Exceptional 8 will be specially recognized and promoted both in the arena and via Sun Circuit’s media channels and partners. Round three of the tournament welcomes The Exceptional 8 back to the arena along with all the regular class entries showing to the third set of Judges at Sun Circuit. The conclusion of those classes will recognize the high scoring Final Four and they will be promoted through all of Sun Circuit’s media channels.

All eyes will be on the National Championship rounds where The Final Four in each class and division will compete in a head to head format with the highest ranked remaining exhibitor competing against the lowest ranked remaining exhibitor and the second highest ranked remaining exhibitor against the third highest ranked remaining exhibitor. Then the winner of those two battles will come back to compete against each other to be named National Champion.

There is still plenty of time to make it on the list or to advance one’s standing: just keep showing. The Tournament will be an event that no serious exhibitor will want to miss. With the building excitement of each round, the abundant recognition, and the ultimate goal of claiming the Championship, the Tournament injects a good deal of fun and fame to the horse show experience.

Individuals who did not appear on the summer ranking who feel they should be considered may submit their current year show results and a letter of 100 words or less by email to the respective event accounts listed below. Emails must be submitted between Nov. 15 th and Dec. 1st of the current year for consideration by the Ranking Committee.

in the West Valley

My name is Debbie Scherr and I live and work in the West Valley as a horse property specialist. I believe everyone is aware the Phoenix Metropolitan Valley is expanding faster than ever, with 202 people moving to the valley each and every day. Over the past 20 years many subdivisions and general growth have been taking over the Agricultural and Rural aspects of Arizona to include the cities of Buckeye, Scottsdale, Chandler, Gilbert, Cave Creek, etc.

I am writing today to ask for your help with a big issue for a small neighborhood in Buckeye, AZ. This neighborhood runs from Jackrabbit Trail to Dean Road, and from Yuma Road to Broadway Road. This is a 2 mile by 2.3 mile area of very low density residential properties and farmland. Many of the residents have lived in this rural area of Buckeye for generations. This neighborhood is

difference!

You can make a

special to me as my Mother lives here and me and my children, her grandchildren, have enjoyed this area for years, to include horses, raising sheep and of course ATVs! This neighborhood rests south of a major traffic artery, Yuma Road (currently 2 lanes, to be eventually expanded to 6 lanes). Obviously, the added traffic and people will cause a lot of air and noise pollution to this quiet community. There is not a whole lot we can do about the proposed development, but there is one part of this project that deeply affects the rural residents of this horseback riding and farming community!

The proposed subdivision development, named Mountain Views South, wants to make one of the “main entrances” into its densely populated neighborhood, out of an existing 2 lane dirt road located in our existing rural neighborhood, namely “Tuthill Road.” The developers would like to convert “Tuthill Road” into one of its 4 entrances into the new subdivision. This entrance would be turned into a 4 lane paved road and bridge over the Roosevelt Irrigation District (RID), turning it into a major traffic artery.

This community utilizes Tuthill Road, (a dirt road) to ride their horses and ATVs from South of Broadway Road to the RID so they can ride down the canal bank safely and peacefully. With all of the new and pending development, this is the only local place with rural access for horses and ATVs for the residents of this neighborhood to enjoy.

I am not aware of any plans by the developer to construct any trails for “horses and ATVs” for our community, just the standard amenities for their cookie cut subdivision.

A couple of hearings have been held on this issue and the residents filed an appeal. Our final chance to be heard on this matter and hopefully change the proposed plans to Tuthill Road will be Tuesday, August 7, 2018, at 6:00 p.m. at the City of Buckeye Planning & Zoning, 530 E. Monroe Avenue, Buckeye, AZ 85326. We have submitted petitions with over 100 signatures, but we really need a big showing of people and support for our small community from all of our fellow horse and farm enthusiasts!

Legacy Ranch Horse Sale Set for Sept 15th The sale tent was packed for the 2017 Legacy Ranch Horse Sale as 31 ranch raised horses sold for an average of $8,971.

The third annual Legacy Ranch Horse Sale is scheduled for Saturday, September 15, at 5:30 p.m. at the Prescott Rodeo Grounds.

Three of Arizona’s largest, most historic ranches – the K4 Ranch, Campwood Cattle Company, and Diamond A Ranch – have teamed up to present a unique offering of using horses carrying the brands of ranches with over 300 combined years of tradition.

The sale is being held in conjunction with Olsen’s Equifest Arizona, a three-day equine extravaganza that includes barrel racing, team roping, clinics, demonstrations, a trade show featuring 40 vendor booths, and more, all free

“These horses are bred and trained to perform every job a big working ranch has to offer, and they are used daily,” says Rick Kieckhefer, manager of the K4 Ranch. “They are asked for a lot, and they give a lot. They are the backbone of our operations, and without them we could not be successful.”

The K4 Ranch, established by the Kieckhefer family in 1941 near Prescott, runs 3,200 mother cows on 200,000 acres of rangeland, as well as a farming operation and feedlot. They have been raising registered Quarter Horses for racing, performance and ranch work since 1943.

The nucleus of Campwood Cattle Company is the 7 Up Ranch north of Prescott, which was established in the late 1800s. Overall the operation runs more than 2,000 mother cows and stockers on 134,000 acres. The current horse program was begun over 20 years ago.

The Diamond A Ranch, originally known as the Three V’s, has been in the cow business since the early 1900s with 750,000 acres stretching from Seligman north to the Grand Canyon. The ranch runs 6,000 head of mother cows and a seasonal herd of steers. The horse operation includes 30 brood mares and a remuda of 120 saddle horses.

Horses in the sale offering will be shown in the fairgrounds arena the afternoon of the sale, with a rope horse demo from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m., and branding and arena dry work from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

The horses will be available in the stall area for buyer viewing and questions from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.

Gail Steiger will perform in the sale ring at 4 p.m., and the sale begins at 5:30 p.m.

Wickenburg, AZ - An exhibition featuring the work of nationally acclaimed artist Howard Post opened at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum in Wickenburg, Arizona, on July 21, 2018.

Howard Post is a third-generation Arizonan who utilizes traditional Western themes in his paintings, which are based on his upbringing in ranching and the rodeo. As a young man, Post’s family reared rodeo stock outside of Tucson, and in in 1965, he won the Arizona High School All-Around Championship in rodeo. While pursuing a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the University of Arizona, Post joined the school’s rodeo team and soon after was on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association circuit. In the late 1970s, he earned a master’s degree in fine art. During that time, he taught art courses and served as an art director. He also worked in commercial arts before realizing his dream to be an independent artist. Post broke free from freelance illustration work and focused on creating his own work in the early 1980s.

Post concentrates on images of cowboys, corrals, horses, livestock, and wide pastures using his own signature impressionistic style and array of colors. Christine C. Brindza, Glasser Curator of Art of the American West at the Tucson Museum of Art, notes, “Howard does not include gunfights and bar brawls and other highly dynamic images. Instead, he focuses on the quiet, real moments of the American West.” Post’s work has been compared to Regionalist painter Grant Wood, Western artist Maynard Dixon, Modern artist Wayne Thiebaud, and others. But his distinctive imagery

The exhibition was conceived and curated by the Tucson Museum of Art and Historic Block and includes approximately 40 paintings and sculptures of assorted sizes from Post’s personal collection, the Tucson Museum of Art’s permanent collection, and private collections. The exhibition made its first stop in Cartersville, Georgia, at the Booth Western Art Museum before returning to the Tucson Museum of Art and Historic Block. The Desert Caballeros Western Museum is the exhibition’s third and final stop on its tour.

Howard Post will give a presentation about the exhibition at Desert Caballeros Western Museum on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 11 a.m. His talk is included with paid Museum admission or free for Museum Members.

Following through on a commitment to pass a farm bill prior to the Fourth of July recess, on Thursday evening, June 28, the Senate passed the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (S. 3042) by a vote of 86 to 11. Unlike the House version of the bill that narrowly passed by a two vote margin on June 21, the

Senate Acts Quickly to Move Farm Bill, Advances Some Animal Health Priorities

Senate bill moved forward with strong, bipartisan support. Fortunately for the horse industry, the Senate package resembles the House version by addressing many of the sector’s top animal health priorities.

Highlights include authorization of a new National Animal Disaster Preparedness and Response (NADPR) program; support for the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN); and creation of the National Animal Health Vaccine Bank that will focus on risks posed by Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).

With respect to authorization of animal health programs, a preliminary review shows that the Senate bill more closely aligns with horse industry priorities than the House bill. For example, the Senate bill authorizes $30 million each year to fund the NAHLN, matching the request from the horse industry and its partners. Although the bill doesn’t authorize specific dollar amounts for the NADPR and the vaccine banks, it creates flexibility by “authorizing sums as necessary” to implement the programs.

AHC will continue to review the senate version of the bill for provisions that could impact the industry, including programs administered by the Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agriculture Service that could help develop international markets for the sector.

Now that each chamber has reported its respective bill, Congress will convene a House and Senate Conference Committee to negotiate a final package to send to the White House for enactment. AHC is already reaching out to congressional negotiators to underscore the industry’s priorities as the legislation moves forward. The American Paint Horse Foundation recently announced the addition Laurie Roden of Phoenix, Arizona, to the organization’s Board of Directors. Laurie’s initial three-year term will expire in 2021, with the option to serve for another three years. The APHF is the non-profit arm of the American Paint Horse Association that focuses on the higher education of Youth members and the preservation of APHA’s heritage.

Laurie, a lifetime APHA member, brings a wealth of experience to her new volunteer position. She has competed on Paint Horses in Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, California, Texas, Utah and Oklahoma. Her Amateur show career is well rounded; Laurie’s enjoyed success in halter, hunter under saddle, hunt-seat equitation, Western pleasure, horsemanship, showmanship, Western riding, barrel racing, pole bending and stake race.

Laurie has been involved in the Arizona Paint Horse Club for several years and is active on the club’s board. She is an employee-owner and group president of HDR Field Services—a firm specializing in engineering, architecture, environmental and construction services with more than 10,000 employees in 225 global locations. She and her husband, Randy, own several broodmares that they breed for halter, English, Western and speed events. The couple has two grown daughters.

“We are fortunate as a foundation to have someone with Laurie’s business expertise and loyalty to the Paint Horse community,” APHA Executive Director Billy Smith said.

Arizona Mounted Shooting

A few of the most frequent questions we mounted shooters get at the matches revolves around the guns, ammo and horses. I’ll try and explain what we use for guns, ammo and hearing protection for the horses as well as the rider and how we keep our horses in shape in the summer months when there are not very many local events unless you are willing to travel large distances to compete.

Guns - the guns are required to be .45 single action revolvers, meaning the hammer must be pulled back and trigger pulled for every shot. There are quite a few companies that manufacture guns specific for mounted shooting, some of the more popular brands are Ruger (Vaquero and Montado models), Uberti (Short Stroke KL CMS Pro Single Action), Cimarron (Thunderstorm), EMF (Pony Express) and Taylor (Running Irons and Smoke Wagon). Prices vary depending on the finish you like. Some makers offer a “Short Stroke” option for people with smaller hands or that just don’t want or don’t have the ability to pull the hammer back so far. Most of these guns can be bought and used immediately however most serious shooters opt to get and action job done which, can be anything from lightening of the trigger springs to clearance of the cylinder, knurling the hammer for better grip and grips that fit your hand better. Actions jobs can be obtained usually through the gun store you buy them from, Guns Plus in Surprise AZ as well as Legendary Guns in Phoenix have gunsmiths they work with to accommodate all your needs. As well as revolvers, Mounted Shooting also has a rifle & Shotgun class, there are numerous shotguns & rifles to choose from, the shotguns are a .410 that uses the same .45LC ammo as the revolvers. The rifles are .440 they use a different blank made specially for rifle use.

Ammo – the ammo for revolvers and shotgun are a .45LC with a specific amount of black powder and are crimped on the ends, there is no projectile! What breaks the balloons is the burning black powder which has a distance (per CMSA regulations of no less than 10 feet and no greater than 20 feet). You must exercise caution and maintain safety as a black powder will burn you should you have an accident. Mounted Shooting organizations have very strict safety rules when it comes to guns, ammo and safety of both people and are equine partners! You must load your gun in a specific location and are not allowed to leave that location with loaded guns or take that gun out of your holster until you engage the course of fire, as well as once you finish your run you must unload your gun before leaving the arena area. All ammo is required to be stamped with the ammo makers name on the brass as to assure someone is not using non- approved ammo, guns can also be randomly checked to assure compliance.

Hearing Protection - for both Horse and Rider – 99% of the horses competing use some sort of hearing protection that is available through many tack shops, vendors at matches or on line, some people make their own version of ear plugs using cat ball toys. Most horses will get used to wearing hearing protection in time, at first they may not care for it but they do get used to it. Hearing protection for the rider is personal preference some use the little ear plugs others don’t.

Summer Months – So how do we keep our mounted shooting horses in shooting shape during the extreme heat of the summer? The answer is simple, we ride very early in the morning or late at night if you have access to a lighted arena. When I say ride, I mean taking them on a nice trail ride or taking them swimming somewhere or up north camping or the like. Early morning you may find some people practicing at the Ben Avery Mounted Shooting Facility before it gets too hot. For the most part there are very few events in Arizona for mounted shooting in the summer except for the ACMSA event held in conjunction with the Flagstaff Rodeo and the Clean Shooter Jackpot buckle series held at night at Horse Lovers Park June, July & August. If you want to travel there are many opportunities to compete depending on how far you want to go, California, Utah, Colorado, South Dakota all have events scheduled as this is their time of the year when the weather is nice.

and integrity of competition for more than 40 years. The AQHA Animal Welfare Commission has implemented rules and sanctions for the Association and members to follow, with drug testing being one of those.

“AQHA began drug testing in 1973 and was among the first, if not the first, equine breed association to do so,” said AQHA Chief Show Officer Pete Kyle. “Our drug-testing program is designed to ensure that horses competing in AQHA-sanctioned competitions are doing so in a manner that will promote the safety and well-being of all horses competing and ensure the enforcement of fair and equitable rules and procedures.”

“Members often have questions about the selection of the exhibitor numbers that are randomly selected for drug-testing process at the AQHA world shows,” Kyle added.

Every world champion is tested for the use of forbidden substances at the AQHA world championship shows.

All other drug tests for a respective class are randomly predetermined before draws are assigned. When entries are received, months before a show, a computer program randomly selects draw numbers from the list of entry numbers. This is done in an effort to remain impartial and to protect exhibitors.

It is understood that certain medications in responsible dosages align with the mission of AQHA animal welfare policies; however, they must be in accordance with AQHA rules.

There are two resources at members’ disposal, the AQHA Handbook of Rules and Regulations and the Therapeutic Medication Hotline (1-800633-2472), staffed by USEF representatives.

In 2001, he became a founding donor of RHF and helped set the course for the future of the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Later, he served in multiple officer positions, including president, for quite some time. Bradley has been instrumental in many fundraising campaigns fostered to support RHF’s core programs, either as an officer, organizer, or donor. His passion for RHF continues on today.

On a regional level, Bradley is known for being a leader. He served as president of the Ohio Valley Reining Horse Association (OVRHA) for many years.

Following this involvement, he progressed to the NRHA Board of Directors and then advanced to serve as NRHA President in 2005.

During his term, NRHA’s expansion into Europe vastly accelerated, bringing large, active reining associations under the NRHA umbrella. His enthusiasm for growth continues with his backing of young rider and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) equestrian programs.

The Zoetis AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder is based in Douglas, Wyoming, and is named for a creek crossing that in the 1800s was notorious for claiming many drover wagons. The ranch encompasses more than 235,000 acres, where owners Catherine and Art Nicholas raise nearly 5,000 head of Red Angus cattle and feed almost 7,500 head of cattle in their feedlot, and the quality American Quarter Horses needed to operate the ranch.

Smart Spook Crosses the NRHA Five Million

City, Oklahoma – After a successful weekend at a number of National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) approved events, another stallion has crossed a historic NRHA milestone. With offspring earning more than $22,000, Smart Spook is unofficially an NRHA Five Million Dollar Sire.

AQHA Announces Major Magazine Changes From magazines to the website, AQHA is transforming its media properties to better serve its readers and advertising partners.

The American Quarter Horse Association is making significant changes to its media properties this summer that will benefit readers and our advertising partners. Beginning in August, all AQHA members will receive two more issues annually of America’s Horse and will have access to all content from The American Quarter Horse Journal, Performance Horse Journal and Ranch Horse Journal. In addition, upgrades to our newsletters will be released this summer, and AQHA.com upgrades are set for the fall.

America’s Horse will now be published monthly. Members will continue to receive a print version of America’s Horse eight times annually and will now enjoy four additional interactive issues delivered in February, April, September and November. Those four interactive issues of America’s Horse will also be available through AQHA.com and delivered by email to an expanded audience of more than 200,000 American Quarter Horse owners. All told, more than 460,000 American Quarter Horse enthusiasts will have access to these digital issues, proving once again that America’s Horse offers the opportunity to reach more horse owners than any other media property in the world.

AQHA recently received feedback on The American Quarter Horse Journal, Performance Horse Journal and Ranch Horse Journal through several surveys of AQHA leadership, advertisers and readers. It was clear that the content was highly valued and delivering editorial in a targeted manner was appreciated. However, most responded that they preferred a single subscription and wanted additional digital access to the content.

Therefore, beginning in August, we are merging content from all three versions of the Journal into one print publication and will provide digital access to that content to all AQHA members. Those who prefer a print version of the Journal can subscribe and receive a monthly magazine with two additional “bonus” issues of Ranch Horse Journal in May and August.

The new monthly magazine will provide competition coverage of AQHA shows and programs, as well as equine health care and training features, and competition coverage of alliance partners and other western performance disciplines. In addition to the bonus issues of Ranch Horse Journal, ranch-horse content and ranch-horse competition coverage will be included in the September, January, March and June issues of the Journal.

The new print version of The American Quarter Horse Journal combines the three current paid magazines into one subscription for owners who prefer a print product. Print subscribers will total 26,700 at launch.

Additionally, we will now give the entire AQHA membership access to content from all versions and issues – meaning digital access for all 251,263 members as an AQHA member benefit.

For our digital audience, independent versions of the Journals will be presented online – The American Quarter Horse Journal, Performance Horse Journal, Ranch Horse Journal and Quarter Racing Journal. Each version will offer additional stories, rich media, leaders, statistics and more that is not presented in the print version. These issues will be shared with AQHA members with interests in those specific areas, creating more value for members and more eyes on your ads.

Retired Air Force Colonel Ronald R. Davis, aged 80, passed away at his Tumalo ranch on Thursday, July 19, 2018 surrounded by his family after a fearless fight with cancer. Ron was born March 31, 1938 in Spokane WA to Esther and Jack Davis. Ron was the middle of three children. Gagliano Elected as Chairman of AHC Board

Chrystine Tauber Named Vice-Chair

(Washington, DC)- James L. Gagliano, President & Chief Operating Officer of The Jockey Club, was elected as the next Chairman of the American Horse Council’s (AHC) Board of Trustees during the AHC’s Annual Meeting and National Issues Forum. Gagliano succeeds Dr. Jerry Black who served as Chairman the

past three years.

“I’m honored to lead the American Horse Council Board and follow the very successful tenure of Dr. Jerry Black,” said Gagliano. “Dr. Black set a very high bar for the AHC, leading the successful transition from longtime President Jay Hickey to current President Julie Broadway, updating the organization’s strategic plan, and completing the first comprehensive Economic Impact Study of the United States Equine Industry in 14 years.”

Gagliano became President & COO of The Jockey Club in 2010, where he had previously served as Executive Vice President & Chief Administrative Officer since 2005.

Prior to joining The Jockey Club, he served as Executive Vice President of Magna Entertainment Corporation’s Maryland racing operations, where he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Maryland Jockey Club. Prior to this role, Gagliano served as Executive Vice President

James Gagliano and General Manager of Greenwood Racing Inc., and worked in various roles during a ten-year stint with the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority. Since October 2010, he has also served as Vice-Chairman on the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities’ Executive Council, representing the Americas. Gagliano was also elected to the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Board of Directors in December 2016.

“It’s critical that the horse industry continue to work to confront crucial issues collectively. The challenge for the AHC in the coming years will be to work to continue to foster collaborative relationships and move the industry forward as a whole,” continued Gagliano.

“Yellowstone” has been renewed for a second season at Paramount Network, the cabler announced Variety News - Production is set to begin soon on the 10-episode second season which will be shot entirely on location in Utah and Montana for a 2019 launch. The Season 1 finale airs Aug. 22 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. New vaccine development to protect against equine herpesvirus (EHV) has begun, according to the Animal Health Trust (AHT), an independent charity in the United Kingdom, employing more than 250 scientists, veterinarians and support workers.

In a press release, Dr. Neil Bryant of the AHT, who leads the research, said, “EHV is a major welfare concern for horses and foals and causes emotional, as well as financial, strains on horse owners and breeders around the world. It can strike any horse at any time, so a vaccine will be of global welfare benefit to all horses, including the thoroughbred and sports horse breeding industries, and would help control this serious and sometimes fatal disease.”

A quick refresh on the disease: It’s a viral infection that can cause respiratory disease, abortion and fatal illness in newborn foals, the press release states. The extra bummer—it can also cause neurological disease in adult horses, which may manifest as only a slight wobble up to complete paralysis.

The release further states that the disease can strike any horse, any time. For our equine buddies, this virus can lay dormant until the horse gets stressed. Then the horse owner transports the horse or mixes him with new horses, and bam!

Neurologic signs manifest out of nowhere.

But isn’t there a vaccine for EHV already? Yes. But, according to the AHT release, “there is still no vaccine licensed to protect against the neurologic form of the disease, and abortions still occur in highly vaccinated horse populations.”

The release points to a high number of abortions in fully vaccinated animals in Hertfordshire in 2016 as evidence that a more effective vaccine is needed.

“We’re at the beginning of a very exciting and potentially groundbreaking vaccine development,” Dr. Bryant said in the release. “Through our research, we will construct different viruses with attenuating mutations and assess their suitability as MLVs (modified live viruses). We hope our findings will enable further development by vaccine manufacturers in creating an effective vaccine to protect against the serious clinical signs induced by EHV-1.”

August Marks New Chapter for NRHA Reiner Magazine

For Immediate Release – July 18, 2018 – Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – Beginning with the August issue of the NRHA Reiner magazine, many will notice changes to the monthly publication. NRHA is in the process of writing a new, exciting chapter with the magazine after implementing new standards for its production, editorial, advertising sales and printing.

EXPANDED PARTNERSHIP In this new chapter, NRHA develops an even stronger joint-publishing relationship with Active Interest Media (AIM) of Boulder, Colorado. AIM publishes 55 magazines, including several in the equine space; owns two associations and several trade shows; has approximately 500 employees; and offers many efficiencies in production, sales and printing. The company is also the publisher of the Pro Trainer magazine for NRHA Professionals, which has received rave reviews for nearly two years and is a highly valued benefit of an NRHA Professional membership.

For many years, NRHA has worked with contractors for several aspects of the Reiner. For example, all or part of printing, design, ad sales, and editorial have been contracted to outside resources. Given the size of

AIM’s publication activities, the company has far greater resources and economies of scale, making them an excellent partner. Taking advantage of this efficiency should translate into maintaining NRHA’s profitability in the short term and should also improve profitability over time.

MEETING THE NEED In an effort to support the needs identified in a recent survey, the NRHA Reiner’s editorial content will be more oriented to the lifestyle of the reining competitor with more training and educational components for the majority of the members who attend the average weekend NRHA event. Additionally, event coverage, NRHA program information, and tips ranging from fitness to a competitive mindset will be highlighted to meet the needs expressed in the survey. The NRHA Reiner will arrive in member mailboxes at a consistent time each month to meet reader and advertiser expectations. The Best Ranch Show Ever AQHA Executive Vice President Craig Huffhines shares highlights from the Zoetis VRH World, Zoetis RHC Finals, Level 1 Cattle Championships and NRSHA National Championships.

This record-setting show had 2,575 entries for the Zoetis VRH World, the Zoetis AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge Finals, the AQHA Level 1 Cattle Championships and the first national championships for the National Ranch and Stock Horse Alliance.

Ranch trail classes on three lush outdoor courses kicked off the 2018 Zoetis AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse World Championships June 13-17 at the Lazy E in Guthrie, Oklahoma. The course had a real ranch feel, where exhibitors navigated a grassy area and encountered natural obstacles.

The rest of the week only got better from there.

This record-setting show had 2,575 entries for the Zoetis VRH World, the Zoetis AQHA Ranching Heritage Challenge Finals, the AQHA Level 1 Cattle Championships and the first national championships for the National Ranch and Stock Horse Alliance. People and horses were literally cross-entered in as many classes as they were qualified for. The VRH entries alone grew 66 percent from last year. We had nearly 60 in each of the VRH amateur, limited amateur and open ranch conformation classes – the variation of horse coat colors in those classes was a sight to see!

To keep the show moving throughout the day, we topped most days with a big awards celebration in the Lazy E Cantina, where we handed out ribbons and trophies, and toasted all the winners. The AQHA Cook Team rose in the wee hours of every morning and threw together breakfast. The cowboy tacos or biscuits and gravy were piping hot every morning by 6 a.m. for all exhibitors, visitors and show staff. Thanks to Brett Burke, with title sponsor Zoetis, for serving food every morning.

Yes, it was hot and humid each day, but these exhibitors and their horses are used to doing their work in these – and even worse – conditions. It was heartwarming to see exhibitors and their horses standing in the shade outside the Reliance Arena, prepping themselves or their horses to go into a class and chatting with other exhibitors. Horseless kids were riding their bikes, and kids with horses were hanging out together.

We crowned six VRH world champions, 36 VRH class champions, seven NRSHA allaround champions, eight Level 1 youth and eight Level 1 amateur class champions, and 18 RHC champions. Three of the VRH world champions are Ranching Heritage-bred horses; three other of the VRH world champs are actual working ranch horses.

We paid more than $100,000 in purse money to our VRH class champions and world champions; more than $50,000 to the Zoetis RHC Finals champions; and $8,500 in Level 1 Cattle Championships jackpot earnings.

Sometimes, we throw a loop at a steer and miss. Sometimes, we catch. This was one of those times. We caught big. The show was a complete success, thanks in no small part to our exhibitors, whose amazing patience and cowboy can-do spirit made the week a pleasure for all of us.

In the words of AQHA Director of Ranching Kim Lindsey, “This was the best ranch horse show ever!”

So how do we top this next year?

I visited with Executive Committee members, exhibitors and key staff regarding what made this event so successful and what should be protected. Our thoughts include: Make sure this event remains fun. We should always keep the exhibitor experience in the forefront.

Preserve the intent of the competition: a ranch horse event that rewards and celebrates the versatility of the horse.

Preserve the heritage, style and purpose of the ranch horse and ranching community.

Make sure the event remains family friendly with its own unique and beloved culture.

Assure that our judges understand and judge the classes based on the ranch horse standard and not over weigh a bias toward a specialized alliance partner standards.

The Executive Committee and the show staff will meet soon to discuss plans for next year’s show. We hope to announce the dates and schedule soon.

We appreciate and congratulate all of the exhibitors, owners and trainers for their wins or for simply hitting personal bests at the 2018 Zoetis VRH World. EQUINE NON-PROFITS GRANTED NEARLY$40,000

BY USA EQUESTRIAN TRUST Next Grant Application Period Opens Early 2019

USA Equestrian Trust has awarded nearly $40,000 in grants to help fund equine-focused projects by four non-profits. Since the inception of its grants program, the Trust has awarded nearly $2.1 million in grants.

The projects funded as part of the grant application period ending in May were: ASBURY UNIVERSITY ($5,000) to fund scholarships for students participating in the university’s service mount program, which trains horses for service with police, military and national park rangers.

MEMORIAL HOSPITAL AT GULFPORT FOUNDATION ($3,212.75) to provide helmets and safety education to young riders.

RACING SURFACES TESTING LABORATORY ($25,423) to examine the effects of weight on the behavior of show horses’ hooves and legs while in the air. The research will compare horses with corrective and performance shoeing to flat-shod horses.

SACRAMENTO AREA HUNTER JUMPER ASSOCIATION ($5,000) to offer a free training clinic to its members, who are entry-level exhibitors and low-budget owners. The money for this grant was allocated from funding reserved for Hunter/Jumper activities in California and Nevada.

The Trust’s next grant application period will begin early in 2019.

2018 National High School Finals Rodeo Reined Cow Horse Recap

National High School Finals Rodeo qualifiers, along with their families and friends, gathered at the Sweetwater Event Complex in Rock Springs, Wyoming, July 15 – 21, for the largest rodeo in the world; consisting of more than 1,500 contestants, 2,000 stalls and 1,400 RVs. The week is filled with opportunities and

activities for young rodeo athletes, including: two rodeo performances per day, shopping, scholarships, nightly dances, family cookouts, educational clinics and much more. The National High School Rodeo Association (NHSRA) is a youth-driven, family-friendly organization, and this was more apparent than ever this past week in the cowboy state.

The National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) just completed its fourth year of partnership with the NHSRA. 101 contestants from all across the United States, Canada and Australia spent the week competing for the championship title in one of the largest youth reined cow horse classes in history.

The cow horse excitement kicked-off on Saturday, July 14, with a free clinic sponsored

by NRCHA cooperate partner CINCH. NRCHA Million Dollar Rider Jake Telford and top-notch NRCHA Professional Jason Gay, both of Caldwell, Idaho, spent the day educating and coaching the young cow horse enthusiasts. 50 clinic participants embraced their one-on-one time with the clinicians, while either working a cow or putting the finishing touches on their rein work.

The contestants’ hard work and determination was evident, as they shined through each performance.

The NHSFR is comprised of three go-rounds; first, second and then, the top twenty riders advance to the short-go, carrying their scores from the previous go-rounds. The improvement seen in these young competitors, and their horses, over the past four years was astounding.

The judges rewarded their efforts with big scores right out of the gate. It took a score of 71 or better, across the board, to advance to the short-go.

After four years of competing in the NHSRA reined cow horse, the Pilot Point, Texas, cowboy Josh Briggs finally captured the 2018 NHSFR Reined Cow Horse Championship with a composite score of 877. The 2018 graduate came into the short-go with a composite score of 589.

(Washington, D.C., July 10, 2018) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today released internal guidance on changes made to farm labor housing eligibility. The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2018 amended a section of the Housing Act of 1949 to extend the Farm Labor Housing tenant eligibility to agricultural workers legally admitted to the United States and authorized to work in agriculture. Due to this rule change, domestic farm laborers legally admitted into the country under an H-2A work visa are now eligible for this state-inspected housing.

“Finding suitable housing for temporary agriculture workers has always been a challenge faced by our farmers and producers,” Secretary Perdue said. “ The application period is now open, with a deadline of August 27, 2018.

Research supports use of FES to ease back pain in horses

A study presented by Sheila Schils, Ph.D. at the 2017 American Association of Equine Practitioners Convention discussed the use of functional electrical stimulation (FES), a type of electrotherapy that stimulates motor nerves responsible for muscle function, to reduce back pain in horses with asymmetric multifidi muscles.

The principal of EquiNew, a company that specializes in therapeutic modalities for use in the equine industry, Schils’ presented the results of a study conducted by Diane Isbell, DVM, a private practitioner from Livermore, Calif., Suzan Oakley, DVM, DACVSMR, of Oakley Equine Sports Medicine in Florida, and Ugo Carraro, MD, of the University of Padova in Italy.

The team worked with a group of 24 horses: 12 that received FES treatments and 12 that did not. All 12 of the horses that received the treatments were retired—two due to back problems and the remaining 10 for reasons unrelated to the back. None of the 24 horses in the study had been ridden for two months leading up to the study.

Researchers administered 35-minute FES treatments to the 12 retired horses three times per week for eight weeks. Schils said researchers placed a back pad with six electrodes between thoracic vertebrae 10 and lumbar vertebra 4, which produced symmetrical longitudinal (from front to back) pelvic rotation for two seconds. This was followed by a two-second pause before stimulating again.

After eight weeks of treatment, ultrasounds of the test group’s multifidi muscles showed a significant improvement in symmetry at all locations, with no change in the size of multifidi in the untreated group. These results, Schils said, suggest FES might help reduce back pain in horses with this condition.

Time Capsule – Williams and Skelton’s first World Title

When team ropers Ken “Speed” Williams and Rich Skelton won their first world title in 1997 they had no idea it was the first of eight consecutive world titles that would eventually land them in the 2018 class of ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductees.

Williams qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo 15 times (1988, 1994, 1996-2008) and is one of six team ropers to make it to the Wrangler NFR as both a header and a heeler. Skelton has 22 Wrangler NFR qualifications on his résumé (1990-2006, 2009-10, 2013-15).

“I don’t think there was any secret to our success,” Williams said. “We came together at the same time, we had the same desires and we wanted to rodeo, and that’s what we did every day. But I never even dreamed that we would win eight gold buckles in a row.”

Williams and Skelton are among the 10-member, 2018 induction class for the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. The ceremony takes place Aug. 4 at the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, Colo.

“This is cool, and I don’t know when this will sink in,” Skelton said when he learned of his selection. “I wanted to make the NFR and I wanted to win the world, and then things just kept going our way. When you look back at it, we had good horses and everything was set up at that time. That’s all we thought about and that’s all we did was rope. To me, we had so much success because Speed changed the heading and started roping fast and I just tried to be consistent.”

The duo won their first world title thanks to winning the 10th round and placing third in the average at the 1997 National Finals Rodeo. (The video above was recorded immediately after this history-making achievement.) Their 4.50-second run in the 10th round brought them to 110.90 seconds on 10 runs. They ended 1997 more than $30,000 ahead of the second-place ropers, Williams with $114,700 and Skelton with $112,243.

Less Red Tape for Farmers EXCHANGE FOR RV SPACE

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue today applauded the removal of a burdensome regulation that has long plagued family farms. The rule requiring producers to obtain Data Universal Number System (DUNS) and System for Award Management (SAM) numbers to participate in U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) programs has been eliminated.

Congress included this repeal in the FY 2018 Omnibus spending package, USDA’s official regulatory change will be published in the Federal Register tomorrow. “ I’m pleased Congress helped us to achieve one of our regulatory goals of cutting red tape for producers utilizing conservation programs by exempting them from SAM and DUNS requirements,” Secretary Perdue said. “These numbers were designed for billiondollar government contractors, not everyday farmers trying to support their families. These changes help streamline the customer experience for farmers, which is a top priority at USDA.” Prior to this rule change in the 2018 Omnibus spending bill, DUNS and SAM numbers were required for any federal contract application. This became an onerous regulation for small farms, when it was intended for large government contractors. DUNS and SAM registration is still required for the following: Partnership agreements entered through the Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) All agreements with eligible entities under the Farm and Ranchland Protection Program (FRPP) Agreements under the Agricultural Land Easement (ALE) component of ACEP Partnership agreements under the Wetland Reserve Enhancement Program (WREP) component of ACEP-Wetland Reserve Easements (WRE) Watershed operations agreements with project sponsors Emergency Watershed Protection Program (EWP) agreements with project sponsors, including Recovery and Floodplain Easements All cooperative, contribution,

interagency, or partnership agreements of Federal contracts used by NRCS to procure goods or services NRCS advises participants in its programs to ignore any emails, phone calls or other communications from third-party vendors offering assistance for registering in SAMS or applying for a DUNS number.

Rookie standout Jongbloed suffers season-ending injury

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Multi-event competitor Zack Jongbloed was having a strong rookie season in the PRCA.

Unfortunately, it ended abruptly for the Iowa, La., cowboy on July 13 when he was competing in tiedown roping in Vernal, Utah.

“I tore my ACL in my right knee and I’m going to be out for six to eight months,” said Jongbloed, 19. “It’s frustrating, but for every downfall there is an uphill battle. I just have to make the best of it, and God has a plan. I just have to look on the bright side and get something good out of it.”

Jongbloed said he initially tweaked his knee at the Ponoka (Alberta) Stampede. He hurt it seriously at the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo in Vernal, Utah, Friday the 13th.

“I’m planning to have surgery next week and then start rehab immediately,” said Jongbloed, who recently completed his freshman season competing for McNeese State University in Lake Charles, La. As of July 18, Jongbloed was second in the PRCA | Resistol Rookie of the Year standings in all-around with $31,581. He was leading the steer wrestling standings with $13,042 and he was fifth in tie-down roping with $18,539.

His saddle bronc riding championships allowed him to go on to the National High School Finals, where he finished in the top 15 both years.

As a College rodeo athlete at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, TX, Cress was a member of the 2015 men's national championship team.

USDA Report Highlights Benefits of Tax Cuts and Jobs Act for Farmers

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue today highlighted a new report showing the positive impacts of President Trump’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) on American farms. Six months after the President signed the tax cuts and reforms into law, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Economic Research Service (ERS) has released a report, titled “Estimated Effects of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act on Farms and Farm Households” (PDF, 3.5 MB). The report examines in detail how the historic tax cuts and reforms will alleviate the tax burden on American farms to help them grow and prosper. According to the report, average tax rates are expected to decline across all farm sizes and commodity specializations and fewer farm estates will be subject

to the Death Tax.

“ Most family farms are run as small businesses, and they should be able to keep more of what they earn to reinvest in their operations and take care of their families,” Perdue said.

“Simplifying the tax code and easing the burden on farmers will free them up to make choices for themselves, create jobs, and boost the overall American economy. This report just shows what we knew all along: the tax cuts and reforms will benefit farmers.”

The TCJA significantly reformed the Federal income tax system, including individual and business income tax rates, business expenses, taxable income deductions, and the alternative minimum tax. The TCJA also doubled the Federal estate tax exclusion. The USDA ERS report estimates the impact of current Federal income tax provisions on farm households by using 2016 tax-year data.

Founding APHA member and Hall of Fame Inductee Junior Robertson passes APHA Past President Junior Robertson of Waurika, Oklahoma, died May 20, 2018, at age 87. Junior was a founding member of the American Paint Stock Horse Association, which later gave rise to APHA, and was among the first inductees to APHA’s Hall of Fame in 2012.

Born September 2, 1930, in Wirt, Oklahoma, to Lee Morgan and Leola Sally Robertson, Lee “Junior” Robertson was the baby of his family. He married Bennie Ruth Bennett on July 29, 1950, and the couple had five children.

A gold-card carrying member of the Rodeo Cowboy Association, Junior was a top hand at roping and even participated as part of a 1958 U.S. exhibition rodeo team with Gene Autry in Havana, Cuba. Athletic, flashy horses became his calling card, and his played a leading role in fostering the development of APHA. Among his two most impactful horses were Wahoo King and Mister J. Bar, both of whom were inducted into the APHA Hall of Fame. Junior served as APHA president in 1976 and 1977.

“Junior was not a perfect man—as none of us are—but he left a huge footprint in the lives of all who knew him. He never said a bad word about another man, he lived life with passion and taught his children to love the Lord, to live life without regret—letting go of the past—and to tell a good story because laughing is good for the soul … and one other thing—to always have a dog at your side,” daughter Loyce Lee Alligood wrote.

Junior is survived by Bennie Ruth; children Loyce Lee Alligood, Sue Sar ratt and Dru Robertson; grandchildren Morgan Brett Gandy, Lee Sarratt, Courtney Pallfreeman, Brian Dru Robertson, Dana Ehtisham, Aaron Paul and Lisa Robertson; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Water - Be Aware When You Fill Up.

This concern seems to happen every monsoon season. Your water in fuel light has come on.

Don’t ignore it, first off! Be sure to drain you water separator, and or fuel filter housing ASAP. The factory water separator systems tend to be slightly under par when it comes to keeping the water out of the fuel system. Draining the fuel system ASAP, will tell you if you had a little water or A LOT of water, depending on the amount that was ingested in the system.

Damage to your fuel system can occur rather quickly on the newer diesel engines. Fuel system components do not take kindly to the lack of lubrication that water puts in the system. Even if the amount of water is small enough to be entrained in the fuel system (not necessarily seen, but it’s in the fuel) damage to your fuel system can occur over time.

Strictly Diesel recommends everyone uses a fuel additive specifically for diesels. Diesel fuel additives can help with the water that is sometimes in our fuel. This additive will help isolate the water, make it separate easier to be detected, help lube the fuel system for more protection, and help your truck run better overall. Stay away from additives which will work on both gas engine and diesel engines. Some of these additives will have alcohol in them which will also damage your fuel system.

(July 11, 2018) – The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and CINCH Jeans and Shirts have announced a new national partnership that will provide broad opportunities for the PRCA membership and create significant exposure for the CINCH Brand at selected PRCA events.

rodeo, the PRCA is constantly looking for ways to expand and improve the sport of rodeo. The CINCH partnership provides significant support to the PRCA’s circuit system including

both the contestants, as well as the rodeo committees. Additionally, more than 100 PRCA members professionally endorse CINCH

Jeans and Shirts.

The multi-year CINCH commitment to the PRCA fits perfectly with CINCH’s existing commitment to supporting youth and college rodeo, including long-term association sponsorships with the National High School Rodeo Association and the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association.

“We started as a small company with big dreams,” said CINCH Marketing Manager Jessica Wahlert. “We’re a lot like the youth and college athletes we’ve watched grow over the last decade.

It’s really important to us that we help put dollars in the pockets of those athletes who are now professional rodeo cowboys. We’re excited about this long-term partnership with the PRCA, which will bring this all full circle.”

Rodeo contestants and fans will see CINCH’s national partnership for the first time in Colorado Springs. The Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo (July 11-14), which is sponsored by CINCH, is once again sanctioned by the PRCA. “PRCA and CINCH are both committed to making rodeo as big and bad as we know it can be,” said Rorey Lemmel, liaison to CINCH Rodeo. “When the opportunity to partner came available, it was a no-brainer. Cowboy Christmas Rodeo News

Cowboy Christmas is prime time to score big, run fast and collect the most prize money in a short amount of time. The first week of July is the pinnacle of PRCA regular-season competition, and the cowboys brought their best.

The fastest times and highest scores might not always make the

record book, but they certainly make a lasting memory for fans and competitors. With about 650 PRCA competitions across the Western Hemisphere each year, there are plenty of opportunities to make a memorable ride.

Although the prize money differs from one competition to the next, the judging remains consistent across the board.

There were 34 PRCA competitions July 2-8, several of which are still underway, and each ride was a chance to be the best of the week.

Here’s a look at the highest scores and fastest times for each event during that period.

Bareback rider Richmond Champion made a 91-point ride on Powder River Rodeo’s Craig At Midnight during the Black Hills Roundup in Belle Fourche, S.D., July 4.

Steer wrestler Will Lummus clocked in at 3.2 seconds at the Rooftop Rodeo in Estes Park, Colo., July 6.

Team ropers Dustin Egusquiza and Kory Koontz made a 3.5-second run at the Oakley Independence Day Rodeo in Oakley City, Utah, July 6.

Three saddle bronc riders made 89-point rides this week. Rusty Wright made 89 points on Frontier Rodeo’s Maple Leaf at the Cody (Wyo.) Stampede, July 2. Clay Elliott registered 89 points on Brookman Rodeo’s Satisfaction at the Home of Champions Rodeo in Red Lodge, Mont., July 4. Also on Independence Day, Chase Brooks had 89 points on Powder River Rodeo’s Rich N Fancy at the Black Hills Roundup.

Tie-down roper Cooper Martin made a 7.6-second run at the Cody Stampede, July 3.

Steer roper Jason Evans clocked in at 9.5 seconds at the Black Hills Roundup, July 2.

Barrel racer Kristine Roy made a 14.51-second run at the Painted Pony Championship Rodeo in Lake Luzerne, N.Y., July 7.

Bull rider J.W. Harris made a 92-point ride on Frontier Rodeo’s After All at the Cody Stampede, July 4.
