Three Rodeo Icons – Trevor Brazile, Charmayne James & Ty Murray will be Honored at the 2022 NFR

Las Vegas Events announced today that three Vegas NFR Icons will be honored at the 2022 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. The Vegas NFR Icons include Trevor Brazile, Charmayne James and Ty Murray. During the first three performances, each of the rodeo champions will be honored on the hallowed dirt of the Thomas & Mack Center. The presentation will include each receiving a 14” custom-made bronze statue of their likeness and a ceremony to unfurl a banner in the rafters at the Thomas & Mack Center. The in-arena schedule for the icons is as follows: Thursday, Dec. 1 – Trevor Brazile, Friday, Dec. 2 – Charmayne James, Saturday, Dec. 3 – Ty Murray “Las Vegas Events is committed to honoring the history and legacy of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas,” says LVE President, Pat Christenson. “Since 1985, Las Vegas has crowned more than 320 World Champions. Winning one World title makes a career. Winning more than nine is iconic. The history and legacy of the Wrangler NFR is driven by its great champions. This year we will begin to honor the most decorated contestants of the past 36 years, both in arena and at the luncheon in their honor.” For each icon, LVE will develop a promotional campaign to promote the three legends and build a daily activation calendar to build anticipation for the ceremony inside the Thomas & Mack Center that evening. In addition to the ceremony raising their banners to the rafters during the first three performances, several events are planned for the Icons. They will appear at The Cowboy Channel Cowboy Christmas on The Cowboy Channel. The Inaugural Vegas NFR Icons Tribute Luncheon is set for Thursday, Dec. 1 at the Virgin Hotel where all three will go three on two with hosts Butch Knowles and Jeff Medders. The two announcers are icons themselves as they have been the broadcast team for the NFR for more than 30 years. This is sure to be one of the hottest tickets at this year’s NFR.. Brazile is simply one of the greatest cowboys in ProRodeo history. He has won 26 world titles, including 14 All-Around. In 2010, he completed the second Triple Crown in four years, winning the all-around along with those for tie-down roping and team roping (header). His overall winnings of more than $7 million is unsurpassed in rodeo history. In 2022, he was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. “I first saw the Thomas & Mack Center as a senior in high school and back then I would have never imagined a banner with my name being hung in a venue with so much history and it is just awesome,” Brazile says. “And it is great company with Charmayne and Ty. It is difficult to find a close second to her in barrel racing. As for Ty, he is a hero that I looked up to during my whole career.” 16

James grew up in Clayton, N.M., ironically the home of the very first barrel racing National Finals Rodeo. Her historic career was set in motion in 1982 when a bay gelding, Gills Bay Boy “Scamper,” found a home in James’ barn after paying just $1,200. Together they became the most iconic duo in the equine industry, dominating the barrel racing ranks from 1984 until his retirement in 1993. James won the first of 10 world titles at the age of just 14 in 1984. The following year, she and Scamper would make an historic run on Friday the 13th, winning the round despite breaking the bridle during the ride. Later, James became the first WPRA member to wear the coveted No. 1 NFR back number in 1987 and became the first barrel racer to surpass $1 million in career earnings. James and Scamper won the NFR average title six times (1984, 1986-87, 1989-90 and 1993). James added a cherry on top of her illustrious career winning her 11th WPRA world title and seventh NFR average title aboard Cruiser in 2002. “This is tremendous recognition, and I am so appreciative to be honored along with Trevor and Ty,” James says. “That is a real treat to share this with them because they are my buddies.” Murray’s childhood goal was to become the best cowboy ever and to be the first to beat the record of six world all-around titles set by Larry Mahan and matched by Tom Ferguson. He started to fulfill that dream at the age of two, riding calves. He progressed through Little Britches, the High School Rodeo Association and the Intercollegiate Rodeo Association at Odessa College. Murray competed in all events, but discovered his true ability lay with saddle broncs, bareback horses and bulls. He joined the PRCA at the age of 18 and never looked back. He went on to win the World All-Around Title seven times (198994, 1998). The dominant cowboy of his era, Murray is recognized by his peers as one of the great all-around champions. A true crossover star, Murray has appeared in numerous commercials, television programs and appeared on Dancing with the Stars in 2009, placing fourth in the competition. “I'm very honored and glad to be recognized with two very dear and longtime friends of mine,” Murray says. “I admire pretty much everything about Trevor and I think he is the greatest timed-hand that has ever lived. I also think he is a great husband, plus he is a humble guy.” Murray continued, “When it comes to Charmayne, nobody has ever come close to what she was able to do in the arena. And, her horse, Scamper, was a tough, renegade horse, but she was able to turn him into the best barrel race horse of all time.” Known as the richest and most prestigious rodeo in the world, the Wrangler NFR attracts the top 15 contestants in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing and bull riding to compete for a share of the increased purse and the coveted PRCA Gold Buckle. In 2021, the event had a total attendance of 169,539 over the 10 days of competition at the Thomas & Mack Center and has sold out more than 340 consecutive performances in Las Vegas.

STRUCTURE FOR 2023 RUN FOR A MILLION CUTTING COMPETITION QUALIFIER The first qualifier for the 2023 Run For A Million cutting competition will be held at the upcoming Brazos Bash held at Bosque Ranch in Weatherford, Texas, from October 4 through 17, 2022. This innovative event will showcase the sport of cutting on a new level while introducing the sport to a fresh audience through the fan base the Run For A Million has developed over the years since its inception with reining horses. The sport of cutting is the pinnacle of Western sports and being showcased on this stage will offer the sport tremendous growth opportunity both in and out of the arena. “The Run For A Million has positively impacted our entire industry,” said Gary Carpenter, National Reining Horse Association commissioner. “Although there was skepticism at first, it has taken its place among the majors in [the sport of reining]. It is no longer being questioned; it is being exalted for the impact it has had on our horses, on our industry, and on the calendar. What Taylor Sheridan has done [for our sport] is remarkable.” This qualifier is open to all competitors, and horses of all ages are invited to compete. Horses ages 3-year-old, 4-year-old, 5 and 6-year-old, and 7-year-old will use their first go-round score in the Open as their qualifying run. All horses that are older than 7-yearsold will compete concurrently in the 7-year-old Open first go-round. The top 10 scoring riders from the qualifier will advance to the 2023 Run For A Million cutting competition. The entry fee for the qualifier is $1,500, and there will be no monies paid out during the qualifying event as the entry fees will be rolled over to the Run For A Million purse to be paid out at the event in 2023. Earnings from the 2023 Run For A Million cutting competition will count for the 2023 Open division world standings as voted on 22

by the NCHA Executive Committee. These world standings are used to determine the top 15 horses that will qualify for the Open division only of the 2023 NCHA World Finals. This 2023 Run For A Million event will solely impact the Open division of the NCHA world standings, no matter what classification the rider is. For example, if an Amateur competitor qualifies for the 2023 Run For A Million cutting competition, their earnings from the 2023 Run For A Million event will count towards Open world standings earnings for the 2023 competition year only. This will not impact the standings in any of the other weekend classes. Additionally, the 2022 NCHA World Standings are not impacted in any way. The 2023 Run For A Million payout is currently slated at $200,000, with the top placing paying out $50,000. As an added benefit to this, numerous shows around the country have already commented with plans to raise their payouts for the 2023 show year to make the hauling year more competitive all season long. Additionally, discussions are underway on the possibility of hosting additional qualifying events as the program evolves. The future of this event could include a Non-Pro and Amateur specific division. “Taylor Sheridan has a proven ability to draw positive attention to our industry from the general public,” said Jay Winborn, NCHA executive director. “While changes are sometimes hard to understand, the growth and continuation of the sport of cutting is our primary goal, and events like the Run For A Million have a unique way of growing the sport in a substantial manner that no other event can.” All horses and all riders are welcome and invited to enter the first qualifying event. The entry deadline for the Run For A Million qualifier has been extended to September 29, 2022.

On the Road to the American Performance Horseman, Next Stop the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity: Q - You won your first Snaffle Bit Futurity in 2001.

Did you foresee that 20 years later that you would still be so competitive?

A - I am not sure that I foresaw that, but I did hope that in the back

of my mind, like any trainer. You want to be competitive a long time, and I guess that it goes back to wanting to prove that you are not a one hit wonder. Just one good horse and that’s all you were. I wanted to stay competitive and train a number of horses and have a number of Championships. I think if you ask any trainer, that is what they would hope for.

Q - Back then, would you have believed that the prize money

would reached a purse of the 1 Million Dollar mark that it has today, at the American Performance Horseman competition?

TODD

INTERVIEW BY TRACY WAGER

A - The winner does not get a million dollars, the total purse is

a million. But, this is a lot of money that we are running at. It is exciting that the prize money has gotten to where it is, and hard to believe. And there again, did any of us foresee this, I do not know, but we sure hoped and dreamed for it. When you start into something, you hope and dream of it being big and you being on top and one of the best. So, I think all of this stuff that is happening, is all of the stuff that we have been dreaming and thinking about and hoped for a very long time. As exhibitors we have all dreamed of this day. Hopefully it just keeps getting bigger.

Q - The American Performance Horseman is taking cow horse to

the next level of competition and prize money. For you personally, and as a Teton Ridge team member, how does that make you feel?

A - Excited! Very excited. Anybody coming up thru the ranks, just

starting out as an assistant trainer, we all dream of being a head trainer and having a barn full of horses and getting to go show at the big shows and win the big prizes. We are all excited. I myself am very excited. It is something that we all have dreamed of. Being able to perform in front of 10’s of thousands of people, televised to a global audience, in a huge arena, that is very exciting! Getting to compete in that big coliseum, and big venues like that. Being on television. That is what we have all hoped and dreamed would happen someday. It’s like being a kid playing Little League Baseball. You are in your back yard playing and dreaming of being a star player for the Yankees and someday playing in the World Series in front of hundreds and thousands of people. That is pretty much every young trainers dream, everyone dreams at some point. To see this happen and to be a part of the Teton Ridge team as well as being part of the process of making this happen, well that is super cool. ON THE SET OF

YELLOWSTONE

Ridge team, and once I found out what the goal was with all of this. Where they wanted to go and what they wanted to do………..I was all in. I definitely wanted to be a part of it. This is really a ground breaking time. A lot of change is happening, and a lot of excitement at the same time. To be a part of this and to help with that progression is very exciting.

How has the exposure on Yellowstone already effected the sport?

A -- It has already exposed

Q - After all this time, of doing what you do, over a lifetime. This must be very exciting? To not only live to see it, but to be a part of it at the very first!

A - It is! Once I understood what Thomas Tull

and Teton Ridge was all about and what they were really trying to do, that’s when this became very exciting. I became very excited! Not just the fact they built this facility in Texas, give us horses to ride and show. That was and is, all great. For me, the exciting part was being a part of this whole process and being one of the guys that helped to put it all together. That I was part of helping to get it going. Hopefully we can be pioneers of the sport and the progression of it. To take it to a whole new level so that in another 20 years someone else comes along and take it even further. This feels really good. I feel pretty honored that they chose me to be a team member. Just the part in it that I have played so far, being a part of all of this is very cool and exciting.

Q - The Snaffle Bit Futurity is an important event. But it is also

important event on the road to the American Performance Horseman competition. How tough is it to win the Snaffle Bit today, compared to when you first won it?

A -They were all tough, but it is a lot tougher now! Back when it

first started it was hard. Today it is hard. Any time you say that you are going to try and win a futurity, it is a tough task. But I will say that today the sport has progressed so much. The horse flesh is one of the biggest factors. There are so many good horses out there now. When I won my first in 2001, you still had coming into the futurity the talk about, well so and so has a really good one, and this guy has a rally good one. We would be talking about 2 or 3 good horses. Nowadays, there are 25 horses in the finals that have a good shot! So it has progressed that much! The training. There are so many more trainers that are capable of winning on any given day. 20 years ago there were maybe not as many, but today there are so many guys that are super capable. That are very good horsemen and are very good trainers with good horses underneath them. That makes the depth of the field deeper, tougher and harder. So, is it harder today? Yes, in that sense, but it has always been hard to win this futurity! Between the horseflesh and the trainers today, that is what has made it harder. Everybody has progressed, there are not many weak links out there anymore. The sport has progressed so much, this is just a part of that progression. The caliber of horse has changed the sport the most. We used to all be fighting over that one horse. Now, everybody has that one good one!

Q - The American Performance Horseman will now expose

cowboys and horses to a World-Wide audience on television. 32

it to many people, and has opened their eyes to see what we do in the Western Performance Show Horse industry. That was all a part of Taylor Sheridan’s plan. When he put us on Yellowstone, he wrote us in with cameo appearances showing the reining, the cow horse and cutting. That was part of his plan. His deal with that was one big plan, and it has really worked great. The Yellowstone TV shows parts were written to showcase to the World what we do. The exposure already has gotten a good start because of the Yellowstone and The Last Cowboy as well. From that, to now. With the American Performance Horseman and the exposure that it will bring by being run along with the American Rodeo competition, this will all follow suit with what Taylor started. This takes the exposure to the next level. To an even higher level. This exposure and momentum will open so many doors for the sport. More people that know about it and want to do it. New owners and sponsors, more prize money. This is all headed in the right direction to make this sport bigger and better than ever! That is really everyone’s vision and goal. Show everyone and let them see how cool this really is. Taylor started that process and The American Performance Horseman is following that lead. With both of these together we are going to reach so many people that have never ever seen what we do. Many that do not even know that this is out there and will be excited to see it. The whole Western craze is out there right now! Yellowstone really started that. It brought it back and people are seeing how great the Western Lifestyle really is. They are seeing how cool that lifestyle still is today. Taylor and Thomas are growing the fan base.

Q - The American Performance Horseman is presenting this as a sport event, not a horse show. How do you feel about that?

A - Excited! Putting this event into the big stadium, that venue, the

connection to the American Rodeo (which is a huge event), the world-wide television coverage, the 10’s of thousands sitting in the seats at the event and watching at home - it is what I have always dreamed of. To compete in that large an arena, in front of so many people. With 20 to 30 thousand people watching, that is super exciting for all of us! For a long time this has been a dream for us older guys that have been around a long time. I have a hard time saying that I am one of the older guys, but I am. So, to see where it was when I first got into it, and knowing where it started. Listening to the guys that were there before me talking about what it used to be like, to what it was like when I started to what it is now……..to take the next step to move forward into it as a sporting event at a big stadium like this, that is just super exciting. I do not know any trainer that does

It will be exciting to see what happens in the next 5 to 10 years. The goal is that these kids can watch it on television, have their friends over and watch it together. They can say, that is my

dad on TV! They can dream of doing it themselves someday. To bring more people to this lifestyle, to this way of life. The more people that are exposed to this lifestyle will become more people that crave this lifestyle. These horses have got to fit. It’s like going the Reining pen or the Cutting pen, but they can do the 3 events. and buying a new pair of shoes, if there is a break-in period or you And I guarantee you that they are just as good in all 3 events, have something to work thru, it seems like it just never works out. With Hott Rod you did both, in a world where folks are paying record-high prices for horses competing in the show pen. And…in doing so you’ve shown it is possible, to make your own horse, and win on the biggest stage for everyone else with a dream. How does that make you feel?

ARIZONA RIDGE RIDERS TO DEBUT IN INAUGURAL PBR TEAM SERIES

The newly formed team is owned by Teton Ridge and will compete at the Gila River Arena

PBR (Professional Bull Riders) today announced that the newly formed Arizona Ridge Riders team will join the PBR Team Series. The new elite league features the world’s top bull riders and will begin games in June 2022.

The Teton Ridge-owned team will be housed at Gila River Arena, located in Glendale. PBR has a strong existing relationship with the Arizona market as the Unleash The Beast series has held events in the Gila River Arena since 2016. The Unleash The Beast series will return to Glendale March 12-13. “The Arizona Ridge Riders are thrilled to join the PBR family and bring a greater appreciation for the excellence and dedication these athletes bring to their craft,” said Jonathan Katz, CEO of Teton Ridge. “As Teton Ridge continues to raise the profile of western sports, the formation of this league is a critical step in the evolution of western culture.” In addition to competing in the PBR Team Series, the Arizona Ridge Riders will host an annual bull riding event and western lifestyle festival, to continue building on the excitement and enthusiasm for the sport. “Having been born and raised in Deadwood, South Dakota, I attended the annual “Days of ’76” Rodeo as a kid,” said Glendale Mayor Jerry P. Weiers. “Later in life, while we were living in Texas, my wife rode horses and was in local rodeos. There is nothing more iconic, more genuine, and more fun than when the PBR comes to town. This event will contribute to the rapid growth of Glendale. Everyone should attend, even if you’ve never been to a rodeo before. You’ll become a fan!” Team formatted bull riding events have been growing in popularity since the debut of the PBR Global Cup in 2017, which has increased interest in the league. The full PBR Team Series league roster includes: n Ariat Texas Rattlers, based in Fort Worth, Tex., owned by the Fisher family, Arizona Ridge Riders, based in Glendale, Ariz., owned by Teton Ridge, Austin Gamblers, based in Austin, Tex., owned by Egon Durban, Carolina Chaos, based in Winston-Salem, N.C., owned by the league and operated by Richard Childress Racing, Kansas City Outlaws, based in Kansas City, Mo., owned by Pulley Outlaws LLC., Missouri Thunder, based in Ridgedale, Mo., owned by Johnny Morris, Nashville Stampede, based in Nashville, Tenn., owned by Morris Communications Company, Oklahoma Freedom, based in Oklahoma City, Okla., owned by the league and operated by Prodigal “Over the past 29 years, PBR has grown to become a mainstream sport carried by CBS and Pluto TV and packing marquee arenas across the country,” said PBR CEO and Commissioner Sean Gleason. “The incredible lineup of passionate, highly successful team owners validates the new PBR Team 48

Series – a transformational addition to the sport that will help take PBR to new levels.” The league will host a PBR Team Series rider draft on May 23 prior to the start of the 2022 season, among PBR rider members who have declared for the draft during the league’s eligibility window. To determine team selection order of the athletes, a draft lottery among teams will be held prior to the PBR Unleash The Beast event at Madison Square Garden in New York on Friday, January 7. There will be two “neutral site” league-produced events, regularseason events and the season playoff and championship. The PBR Team Series’ inaugural 10-event regular season will culminate in a team playoff at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas November 4-6, 2022. All PBR Team Series events will be carried on either the CBS Television Network, streaming live on Paramount+, CBS Sports Network or Pluto TV. The PBR Team Series complements the successful PBR Unleash The Beast premier tour, which held its first championship in 1994. In 2022, it will be staged January – May, with its World Finals held in Fort Worth, Texas from May 13-22. The PBR Team Series builds on the existing structure of professional bull riding with the same rules for judging and scoring qualified 8-second bull rides. Events will be structured in a tournament-style format with all teams competing in head-tohead matchups against a different opponent each day. Each game will feature five riders per team squaring off against another team. The team with the highest aggregate score of qualified rides among its riders will be declared the winner of each game. The event winner will be the team with the most game wins across an event, with a special bonus round designed as a tie breaker to determine final event standings. The successful event format continued in June and July 2021 with the PBR Monster Energy Team Challenge, presented by U.S. Border Patrol. In addition, PBR has staged multiple Air Force Reserve Cowboys for a Cause team charity events.

The National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) welcomes Nick Dowers of Dyer, Nevada to the coveted NRCHA Million Dollar Club.

Dowers crossed the Million Dollar Rider earnings mark when he earned at the National Stock Horse Association Futurity Open Champion title aboard Cabanna Boy. With $1,006,910.74 in NRCHA earnings to his name, Dowers is now part of an elite group of reined cow horse competitors. “I’ve been waiting for this for a while! I have dang sure wanted it to happen, for sure. I’m happy,” said Dowers. “The one thing I’m most proud of as far as the million dollar is that all but about $40,000 are horses I’ve started, trained, and done all the work. The other is horses from Annie [Reynolds] that I didn’t start and train. It’s a pretty dang small group of horses for these earnings, and the horses over the years.” The rancher, horseman and trainer started out working horses on his family’s Triple D Ranches in far western Nevada. He attended Feather River College and began to focus on training horses through their equine program, especially motivated by a guest clinician and renowned colt starter, Bryan Neubert. Dowers, who has racked up titles training horses in the snaffle bit, the hackamore, two-rein and bridle, is also a Road To The Horse two-time colt-starting champion. With the backing of his family and owners that stay the course, like Clinton Marshall and Trigg Marquiss, Dowers says that he has the confidence to continue training a horse even when there are bobbles in the process. “Clinton has owned a lot of really cool horses, and he understands the process and doesn’t get worked up in the highs and the lows. He has always had confidence in me that I’ll get it. Having an owner that has that kind of confidence in what you do, that doesn’t stress me out. We have never panicked and continued to stick with the horse, and it seems to find a way to work itself out,” he said. “Along those lines, too, my family, my parents, my wife, and everybody that supports me all the way—I definitely couldn’t do it without them! They help where need be and that is crucial,” Dowers continues. “I feel a lot of satisfaction in the fact that of all the horses I’ve bought for Clinton or Trigg Marquiss or myself, the success rate on buying yearlings is super high. We have had very few that have not turned out to be really good horses. That has been fun, learning what to look

for and what suits me to work, and replicate that over and over. It’s been cool.” A multiple NRCHA world champion, in the two-rein and hackamore, Dowers has trained four horses with more than $100,000 in earnings. While he has numbers earners that have helped him accomplish the million-dollar milestone, a few stand out over the years “Time For The Diamond is the one that let me know it was possible to hang with the big dogs,” Dowers said. “Smooth Bellingrath won $100,000 but did it the hard way, not a lot of big shows but $5 or $10,000 at a time. He was a super consistent horse. Another horse that is special to me is High Stressin Cat He’s been awesome for a long time and has won from the futurity through the bridle spectacular. Cats Nu Shine, the little mare from last year, she is incredible. Earnings wise, I don’t think we’ve tapped into where she can be, but as an individual she is really special and on my list of top horses. The other one that stands out is Smart Shiney Playboy.” Despite more than a dozen years of consistent reined cow horse success, Dowers still has show pen goals to achieve. Notably, to earn the champion title at the NRCHA Derby and the Stallion Stakes. Additionally, he’s gunning for a World’s Greatest Horseman title. “I’ve been out here in the middle of nowhere, doing what I’ve been doing in a place I shouldn’t be able to do it just by hard work and determination,” Dowers said. “When I was starting out, I remember somebody said I won’t be able to be a topflight trainer until I move to Texas or Arizona and to myself, I thought, ‘You just watch.’ People should realize they can do it, too, if they put their mind to it. There is nothing holding you back but yourself.” ”We are thrilled to welcome Nick to NRCHA’s Million Dollar Rider ranks,” said Anna Morrison, NRCHA Executive Director. “The Dowers family has made a remarkable impact on the association, and seeing Nick’s success in the arena recognized by achieving this milestone is truly exciting.” Dowers along with Clayton Edsall, Sarah Dawson, and Matt Koch will be recognized for passing the million dollar milestone at the 2022 Snaffle Bit Futurity® presented by Metallic Cat, Saturday, October 22. Complete event details are available at nrcha.com/snaffle-bit-futurity. For more information on the NRCHA Million Dollar Rider Club, visit nrcha.com/nrcha-million-dollarclub.

National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum and Rodeo Historical Society to celebrate rodeo legends at annual Rodeo Hall of Fame Weekend

Since 1955, the National Rodeo Hall of Fame has been dedicated to honoring and memorializing the legacy of great competitors in rodeo and its related professions. That tradition will continue as rodeo icons are recognized at the Rodeo Historical Society (RHS) and National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum’s annual Rodeo Hall of Fame Weekend, November 11 – 12, 2022, with induction into the renowned National Rodeo Hall of Fame. The Ben Johnson Memorial Award, Director’s Choice Award and Tad Lucas Memorial Award recipients will also be honored. The celebration will take place at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. “The National Cowboy Museum and the Rodeo Historical Society are delighted to celebrate rodeo by honoring the incredible men and women who helped make it an American tradition,” said Museum President and CEO Natalie Shirley. “Rodeo Hall of Fame Weekend offers both rodeo enthusiasts and members of the public the opportunity to come together and celebrate a sport that is important to so many individuals — and families — across the country.” The National Rodeo Hall of Fame Class of 2022 in both the Living and Deceased categories includes: LIVING, Guy Allen, Gary Gist, Cleo L. Hearn, The Kirby Brothers (Butch, Kaye (1952 - 1978) and Sandy), Tom Reeves and Tee Woolman. DECEASED: Ben Bates (1933 – 2017), Jake Beutler (1903 – 1975) Each year, the family of trick-riding legend Tad Lucas bestows the Tad Lucas Memorial Award upon a living female whose actions promote the values represented by Tad Lucas. The Ben Johnson Memorial Award winner is chosen by committee each year to honor a living individual who represents the Western lifestyle as exemplified by screen and rodeo legend Ben Johnson. The Tad Lucas Memorial Award honoree of 2022 is Martha Josey, and the Ben Johnson Memorial Award honoree is Chuck Sylvester. The Director’s Choice Award, which is only given out under exceptional circumstances and with careful deliberation, is being awarded to cowboy and television host Jeff Medders. National Rodeo Hall of Fame inductions and awards are sponsored and selected by the Rodeo Historical Society, an organization under the auspices of the National Cowboy Museum whose worldwide members share an interest in preserving both rodeo history and the sport itself. The selection process begins with the Rodeo Historical Society committee and is then voted on by the Rodeo Historical Society members. Membership supports the Museum’s rodeo programs, including research, an oral history project, acquisition of materials for the American Rodeo Gallery and the distinguished National Rodeo Hall of Fame. National Rodeo Hall of Fame inductees, along with the Tad 70

BEN JOHNSON Lucas Memorial Award and Ben Johnson Memorial Award honorees, are recognized each fall during Rodeo Hall of Fame Weekend, which includes an Induction Ceremony and Champions’ Dinner, Inductee Panel Discussion, Rope ‘N’ Ride Cocktail Reception, live and silent auctions to benefit RHS and other festivities.

JR Robles Sweeps All Rounds at the Wild Card Challenge

The Road to the Horse Wild Card Challenge was held September 22-25 at the Cowtown Coliseum in the historic Fort Worth Stockyards. The event featured six competitors, colts from the legendary 6666 Ranch, and a cash purse of over $25,000. It was Wild Card JR Robles, who finished in the top, sweeping wins in all three rounds, and earning an invitation to compete at Road to the Horse 2023.

“The horse (BAMA CROWN) was absolutely amazing, he was with me every step of the way” stated Wild Card Challenge Champion, JR Robles. It was a fairytale ending, for the self-proclaimed underdog, who only began training horses twelve years ago. “The ending (of the event) was a culmination of all the hard work from my assistants, to people back home, to family, to friends, and the horse. The way God just put the whole finish together was unforgettable.” JR Robles earned $1,000 bonus money for receiving the top score in each round, in addition to the $10,000 Wild Card Champion prizemoney (total earnings of $13,000). Nate Eicher’s strong finish in Round Three allowed him to capture the Reserve Championship (earning $7,500), with Kelsey Love Thomas rounding out the Top Three (receiving $5,000).

The Launch of the All-New, AllElectric EW, ALL-ELECTRIC F-150® Lightning™ Pickup

COLE FRANKS CLOSES SEASON WITH STEPHENVILLE VICTORY

By Jolee Jordan, Special to ProRodeo.com The spotlight was hot and focused on a pair of rodeos Sept. 25, the final Sunday of the 2022 ProRodeo regular season. The Cowboy Capital of the World PRCA Rodeo in Stephenville, Texas, was one of the rodeos showcasing the battles ProRodeo athletes were waging for the final spots into the 2022 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge. Stephenville represented one of the last opportunities for contestants to put money towards their earnings as they bid to finish inside the Top 15 of the PRCA | RAM World Standings.

But while other bubble cowboys dashed across the country, competing in high-pressure, must-win situations, bareback rider Cole Franks wasn't feeling the strain of the bubble with the final weekend looming. He finished out his 2022 sophomore ProRodeo campaign with an 88-point ride on Pete Carr Pro Rodeo's Worth the Whiskey to capture the win in Stephenville. Ironically, Franks had a hand in setting up the meeting with Worth the Whiskey. "I was actually sitting at the Bucking Horse Sale in Vegas last year with my dad and Pete Carr when they bucked that horse," said Franks, 21. "They had him in the saddle broncs and he was fighting it a little. We told Pete he should try to get him bought, that he'd make a good bareback horse." Carr made the deal and Worth the Whiskey debuted in ProRodeo in San Antonio in February. "I saw him earlier this year and it seemed like he took off the second half of the season and he gets better and better with each out," Franks said. "I was definitely looking forward to getting on him. He's one anybody in the world would want to have." Competing on Saturday night in Stephenville, the horse left the chutes fast and gave Franks a fun trip for the win. "He felt awesome. I had a little bobble in there in the middle and I think I was just having too much fun and quit lifting on my rigging," he said. "I thought, I better finish this." 78

Ford F-Series has been America’s best-selling truck for 45 years in a row.[1] F-150 Lightning trucks are now being built for customers across America; it accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in sub-4 seconds with the extended-range battery, making it the fastestaccelerating F-150 yet.

Assembled at the ultra-modern Ford Rouge Electric Vehicle Center within the historic Rouge Complex, F-150 Lightning is the only electric truck that is Built Ford Tough®. The F-150 Lightning is the smartest, most innovative F-150 that Ford has ever built, with the freedom of an available 9.6 kW smart power plant on wheels, software updates that will make it even better over time and Built Ford Tough capability. “We’re celebrating the Model T moment for the 21st century at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center,” said Ford Executive Chair Bill Ford. “The Rouge is where Ford perfected the moving assembly line, making it a fitting backdrop as we make history again. The stunning anticipation for F-150 Lightning is a credit to the work of our Ford engineers and designers, and the UAW team members who are assembling these trucks with pride.” With the win, Franks closed out his season 10th in the world standings with more than $114,000. "It's awesome," Franks said. "I've dreamed ever since I was little and worked towards this my whole life and it's awesome to finally see it coming to fruition." Franks was successful in his first Wrangler NFR trip as a rookie in 2021, finishing third in both the average and the world standings. "It's not to say I wasn't expecting to do good; I knew I could, but I'm trying to outdo what I did last year," he said. "My goal is to win some go rounds," Franks said. "We're so packed in there (in the world standings) that only a round and a half separates us. I'm shooting for the gold." Other winners at the $103,873 rodeo were all-around cowboy Marty Yates ($1,470, tie-down roping and team roping); steer wrestler Tyler Waguespack (3.5 seconds); team ropers JC Yeahquo/LJ Yeahquo (4.0 seconds); saddle bronc rider Brody Cress (88.5 points on New Star Pro Rodeo's Southpoint Buckle); tie-down ropers Cory Solomon and Chet Weitz (7.6 seconds); breakaway roper Danielle Lowman (1.8 seconds); barrel racer Wenda Johnson (14.94 seconds); steer roper Chet Herren (34.1 seconds on three head); and bull rider Ernie Courson Jr. (83.5 points on Lancaster & Jones Pro Rodeo's This Is It).

Experience the Diverse Talents of Western Women at the Fifth Annual

Cowgirl artists express their takes on the West through a variety of mediums, including paint, clay, silver, leather, rawhide, poetry and music. Art of the Cowgirl, founded by Montana horsewoman Tammy Pate, celebrates and perpetuates the timeless talents of Western women through educational fellowships, competitions and special events. The fifth annual Art of the Cowgirl main gathering returns to Horseshoe Park & Equestrian Centre in Queen Creek, Arizona, January 18-22, 2023, with a full schedule of exciting opportunities that will immerse male and female attendees in the Western lifestyle. The heart of Art of the Cowgirl is its fellowship program, which unites emerging female artisans in traditional trades such as silversmithing, leathercraft, bootmaking, horse training and fine art with masters in those fields. The gathering is a fundraiser to facilitate these partnerships, which empower and educate women while honoring Western heritage. The upcoming event will include hands-on workshops, horsemanship demonstrations, artist and maker presentations, panel discussions and a silent art auction. In the arenas, skilled horsewomen will compete in ranch rodeo, breakaway roping and the third annual World’s Greatest Horsewoman competition. New to the event, world champion reined cow horse trainer Erin Taormino will offer a youth cow horse clinic, followed by a youth cow horse competition. Throughout the weekend, a curated trade show will showcase original art, apparel, gear, gifts and accessories made by cowgirl artisans. Cowgirl musicians will perform on the stage and chuckwagon cooks will have their fires burning and serving samples of their camp-style cuisine. The gathering culminates with the Elite Ranch Horse Sale, continued on page 84

Riding - As a child, Elizabeth was given her first horse, a Shetland

pony named Peggy, at age 4, which she was riding by the age of 6. By age 18, she was an accomplished rider, and continued to ride for pleasure into her nineties. In her role as monarch, Elizabeth also rode in a ceremonial role. From her first appearance as princess in 1947 and throughout her reign as queen until 1986, she attended the annual Trooping the Colour ceremony on horseback. Initially, she rode a bay police horse named Tommy in 1947. When her father, King George VI, was unwell, she rode in his place on his chestnut horse Winston, and she rode Winston after George VI’s death. Later she rode a chestnut horse named Imperial. For eighteen consecutive years, from

Horses and Elizabeth II

1969 to 1986, her horse was a black mare named Burmese. Burmese was a gift from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. From 1987 onward, since Burmese retired, she would attend in a carriage. Racing - Racing colours of Queen Elizabeth II, as used by her father King George VI and great-grandfather King Edward VII: Purple, gold braid, scarlet sleeves, black velvet cap, gold fringe. Her Majesty owned many thoroughbred horses for use in racing, having initially inherited the breeding and racing stock of her late father King George VI, in 1952. Up until the late 1960s she raced her own-bred stock as well as horses bred by the National Stud. Her registered racing colours (termed silks), as worn by the jockeys riding her race horses, are the same as those used by her father and great-grandfather, King Edward VII; a purple and scarlet jacket with gold braiding, with black cap. As of 2013, horses owned by the Queen won over 1,600 races, and excluding the Epsom Derby has won all the British Classic Races, some multiple times. She also won a French Classic, the Prix de Diane in 1974. She was named British flat racing Champion Owner in 1954 and 1957, the

first reigning monarch ever to do so twice. She had a 2nd place runner in the Derby, Aureole, in 1953, the year of her coronation. Her horse Dunfermline won two of the classics, the Epsom Oaks and St. Leger Stakes, in Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee year of 1977. She never gambled and is instead said to have had more interest from the outcome of a successful breeding match, but she is said to have read the Racing Post over breakfast every morning. Breeding - Elizabeth II took a keen interest in the breeding of her horses, and was the patron of the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association. She made regular visits to observe and assess her animals first hand from birth and beyond. Her horses are foaled at the Royal Stud in the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, England. As yearlings, they are raised at Polhampton Stud in Hampshire,

before being passed on to the training facilities of any one of seven trainers (as of 2018 season). Once they finish racing, they remain in her care into retirement or are sold at various bloodstock sales. Her bloodstock and racing adviser is John Warren, who took over the role from his father in law, Henry Herbert, 7th Earl of Carnarvon, on his death in

at Balmoral to enhance and preserve the breed. Pageants and shows Elizabeth II hosted the Royal Windsor Horse Show every year in Windsor Park, part of the royal estate in Berkshire. In her Diamond Jubilee year, an evening horse themed Diamond Jubilee Pageant was combined with the daytime show. Documentaries - In 1974, Elizabeth II’s interest in horses was the subject of a documentary title, The Queen’s Race Horses: a Private View, which she herself narrated. In 2013, as part of the 60th Anniversary Coronation celebrations, Clare Balding presented the BBC Documentary, The Queen: a Passion for Horses.

2001. He had held the post since 1969. As well as thoroughbreds, Elizabeth also bred Shetland ponies at Balmoral in Scotland and Fell ponies at Hampton Court. In 2007 she opened a full-time Highland pony stud

USEF Ukraine Relief Fund Helps

Deliver $100,000 in Veterinary Medical Supplies

Lexington, Ky. — Following a call for aid coordinated by the Ukrainian Equestrian Federation Charity Foundation (UEF-CF), the FEI Solidarity Relief Fund with financial help from the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) purchased equine medicines and veterinary supplies for distribution to Ukrainian veterinarians. The total value of the donated medical supplies is $100,000, and the supplies include aid for emergency cases, including colic, infections, lameness, and other common diseases. All donated medicines have been delivered to Ukraine and distributed to equine veterinarians free of charge. This corresponds to over seven tons of supplies, which will ensure treatment for 5,700 horses all over Ukraine.

“Following the invasion by Russian military forces, the FEI set aside a Solidarity Relief Fund of one million Swiss francs for the equestrian community in Ukraine,” FEI President Ingmar De Vos said. “The USEF joined forces with the FEI Solidarity Relief Fund, establishing the USEF Ukraine Relief Fund to support Ukraine horses and equestrians, with 100% of funds raised going to the FEI Solidarity Relief Fund to be distributed by the FEI for specific projects approved by the USEF. We are very grateful to the U.S. equestrian community for their dedication and swift action. Thanks to their generosity, veterinary equipment and supplies have been purchased and donated to the Ukrainian equestrian community to address their most pressing needs. Our efforts continue and the welfare of Ukrainian athletes, both human and equine, remains our priority.” 94

Prior to the launch of the project in Ukraine, the UEF-CF reached out to the majority of equine veterinarians from Ukrainian regions to map the horse welfare situation and assess the help needed. Several problem areas were highlighted, including a lack of medicines, such as painkillers, anesthetics, sedatives, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory drugs; a general lack of equipment, including portable x-rays, ultrasound, endoscope machines; and the very limited financial resources of horse owners to pay for treatment. The FEI Solidarity Relief Fund in cooperation with the USEF stepped in to help. The most needed medicines and supplies were commissioned in Europe and delivered to Ukraine. In Ukraine, the UEF-CF coordinated the distribution of donated medicine and supplies in a collaborative and inclusive manner with the Ukrainian FEI’s accredited veterinarians who chose the distribution principles and distribution plan. The main objective was to increase accessibility and quality of veterinary services for horses in Ukraine. All donated medicines and supplies were distributed to equine veterinarians to the eight regions with the largest number of horses - Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Odesa, Sumy, Vinnytsia, Cherkasy and Lviv. “Assistance for veterinarians is extremely important in Ukraine. For many horse owners, even simple veterinary care is out of reach now, and veterinarians often work on a volunteer basis. Free medicines will make it possible to save and help many horses in this difficult time. We are very grateful to our colleagues at the USEF and the FEI Solidarity Fund for responding to our request and providing our veterinarians with the medical supplies they need now and in sufficient quantities,” said Mykhaylo Parkhomchuk, founder of the Ukrainian Equestrian Federation Charity Foundation. As a follow-up, the FEI veterinary department plans to hold a seminar to provide general information about the medical supplies and to discuss specific use cases and difficult situations that

XIT Ranch Acquires Renowned Stallion Kit Kat Sugar

To stand at the Four Sixes Ranch in 2023!

The historic XIT Ranch has acquired 2008 stallion Kit Kat Sugar. The ranch, based in Channing, Texas, with equine operations in La Veta, Colorado, once relegated to the history pages, has had a

rebirth in recent years, led by third great grandson of original ranch founder and owner John V. Farwell, Drew Knowles, who is focused on breeding the highest quality cattle and Quarter Horses. Kit Kat Sugar, by High Brow Cat and out of Sugar N Dulce (by Smart Lil Ricochet), earned $240,903 during a stellar cutting career where he won seven major events in his 4-year-old year, including the National Cutting Horse Association Super Stakes Reserve Champion and retired sound. The American Quarter Horse Association stallion, bred by Barbara and Lonnie Allsup, has a long list of accolades that includes winning the 2012 NCHA Open Horse of the Year honors. “When we started building our remuda we started with a handful of the best mares in the country from the Return to the Remuda sale,” said Knowles. “The addition of Kit Kat Sugar shows our commitment to our breeding program and our dedication to building one of the best horse programs in the world. We’d like to thank the Allsup’s and Branch’s for trusting us with Kit Kat Sugar’s legacy.” In 2021, “Skeet” was named the NCHA #7 Leading Cutting Sire and was a top 15 National Reined Cow Horse Association Leading Sire. His impact is evident as his offspring’s performance earnings totaled $7,509,695 by August 2022. Elite offspring include the NRCHA Open Snaffle Bit Futurity Reserve Champion Scooter Kat (LTE $340,375), NCHA Open World Champion Sugarspiznevrthingniz (LTE $291,735), and NCHA Amateur Horse of the Year Sweet Toothe (LTE $167,374). 98

“We were very patient and calculated with our first stallion acquisition,” said ranch manager Ben Lard. “Kit Kat Sugar is not comparable to any other stallion. He checks all the boxes: great feet, conformation, an intelligent mind, and exceptional athleticism.” With that in mind, the XIT Ranch is offering horses sired by the stallion an enticing incentive—the $350,000 Kit Kat Sugar Bonus— starting with the 2023 show season. To be eligible, the breeder,

owner or rider must have a 2023 breeding contract to Kit Kat Sugar on file. At the major cutting and reined cow horse futurities, the following bonuses will be paid to Kit Kat Sugar offspring placing in the Open division top three spots: • NCHA Open Futurity: $100,000 to the Champion, $50,000 to the Reserve Champion and $25,000 to the third-place horse. • NRCHA Open Snaffle Bit Futurity: $100,000 to the Champion, $50,000 to the Reserve Champion and $25,000 to the third-place horse. “There is nothing left to chance with XIT’s acquisition of Kit Kat Sugar,” said Jim Ware, former owner of both the Triangle Sale and Western Bloodstock. “Drew is committed to raising the world’s finest cutting, cow and ranch horses, and this stallion has proven himself as a sire of all disciplines. I am delighted to have been a part of this transaction between the XIT Ranch and the stallion’s breeders, Barbara and Lonnie Allsup.” The stallion will stand at the renowned Four Sixes Ranch in Guthrie, Texas, and Kit Kat Sugar is poised to have his best breeding season yet. “We are proud that XIT Ranch chose the Four Sixes Ranch to stand this highly accomplished and sought-after stallion, said Dr. Glenn Blodgett, Four Sixes Ranch horse manager. “He is a special horse who passes all his great qualities to his offspring, as evidenced by the offspring earnings and accolades.” The partnership between these two historic ranches spans generations. Former General Manager of the XIT, A.G. Boyce, served on the Executive Committee of the Cattle Raisers Association of Texas with Four Sixes founder Burke Burnett in the early 1900’s. “I congratulate Drew and the XIT on their purchase of Kit Kat Sugar. It’s exciting to have such an outstanding stallion come to the Four Sixes,” said Taylor Sheridan. “He offers a tremendous amount of influence to the cutting, reined cow horse and ranching industries. Standing at the Four Sixes provides an opportunity to serve all those facets of the horse world.”

Ukraine Relief

Ukrainian veterinarians face when treating horses. "The US Equestrian community, and notably Brooke USA, were important contributors to this incredible effort to rally around the needs of horses in Ukraine where help is needed so desperately. The global equestrian community is powerful and cohesive and demonstrates how much can be accomplished when people come together. We would like

to thank you, our members, for once again stepping up with your generosity,” said Tom O’Mara, President of USEF. The winter will create additional challenges for the horses and veterinarians of Ukraine. Donations to the USEF Ukraine Relief Fund will continue to support their needs.

FEI Solidarity Foundation

Launched in 2011, FEI Solidarity promotes and

develops equestrian culture and sport worldwide in a sustainable and structured way. We work directly with the FEI’s member National Federations and recognized Continental Associations by providing the tools, the knowledge, and the infrastructure required to

develop the sport and nurture talent from grassroots to the world stage. FEI support is focused on four key pillars of activity (National Federation, Athlete, Coach, and Values) with specific programs available in each of the pillars in order to best target and fulfill specific development needs. We do this through financial support, consultancy services, and technical programs, and we collaborate closely with over 40 Technical Experts to deliver the programs around the world and oversee the global development of the sport. Since 2012, the foundation has supported 284 projects and programs in all four corners of the globe, using one of our three types of assistance across the four FEI Solidarity pillars.

OCTOBER 2022

The UEF Charity Foundation is one of the youngest and rapidly growing organizations in Ukraine and focuses on helping equestrians and their horses during the war in Ukraine. Founded on the fourth day of the conflict, the foundation has provided help to more than 5000 horses in 200 stable yards in Ukraine, assisted in evacuation and relocation of more than 300 horses, and established two free evacuation stable yards (100 boxes) for relocated horses in safe areas, providing food and bedding for their inhabitants. Currently over 1200 tons of food and bedding have been distributed in Ukraine through the transparent system of help requests, strong logistics, and the tireless work of 30 volunteers. UEF-CF is registered in Belgium and its mission is to help the Ukrainian equestrian community during the crisis. The Foundation works closely with the FEI, European Equestrian Federation, and National Equestrian Federations. For all the latest information and activities visit https://helpukrainehorses.eu/

$500 Million Available to Increase Innovative

AmericanMade Fertilizer Production

108

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced that the Biden-Harris Administration is making $500 million in grants available to increase Americanmade fertilizer production to spur competition and combat price hikes on U.S. farmers caused by the war in Ukraine. “Under the leadership of President Biden and Vice President Harris, USDA is creating a resilient, secure and sustainable economy, and this support to provide domestic, independent choices for fertilizer supplies is part of that effort,” Vilsack said. “USDA believes in the growth of innovative, local businesses owned and shared by people who can best serve their own unique community’s needs, fill gaps, and build opportunities. Recent supply chain disruptions have shown just how critical it is to invest in the agricultural supply chain here at home. The Fertilizer Production Expansion Program is one example of many BidenHarris Administration initiatives to bring production and jobs back to the United States, promote competition and support American goods and services.” OCTOBER 2022
