Tex Earnhardt Passes On

On September 4, 1951, a few months before his 21st birthday, Tex Earnhardt opened up Earnhardt Ford in Chandler. and was the youngest person ever to receive a Ford franchise. Tex was a pioneer in television advertising in Phoenix that drove sales. Earnhardt Ford was the first of almost two dozen Earnhardt Auto Centers. In a career that spanned over 68 years, Earnhardt opened up 23 dealerships. The auto centers have over a dozen different car brand. Derby, Earnhardt’s grandson, said, “Tex’s mark on the economic landscape of the Southwest and in the hearts of our family and Arizonans will endure for generations to come. While we’ll go on… it’s tough to know that this great man is no longer with us…no longer atop Chisholm [the trusty steer in Earnhardt commercials] greeting our friends and customers and introducing them all to this amazing brand [that] he built.”

Tex Earnhardt, founder of Earnhardt Auto Centers and a man known for his catchphrase “That ain’t no bull,” has died at the age of 89. On Sunday, April 19th. He was born on December 9, 1930, near the Rio Grande River Valley in Texas, and he moved to Chandler, Arizona, as a teenager. He leaves behind three children and several grandchildren. Earnhardt’s sons Hal and Jim Babe Earnhardt said, “It’s a time to remember and grieve, but the company – and the mission to serve its surrounding communities – will continue to grow and expand; ensuring the legacy and spirit of Tex Earnhardt is felt and present for many, many years to come.” The 89-year-old was famous for his TV ads where he would sit on top of a steer and say his phrase: “That ain’t no bull.” Tex Earnhardt Opened Up His First Car Dealership Before He Turned 21

PBR World Finals. Qualifying positions will be open to all eligible women across the world. Ten riders will have direct paths to the Championship based on their final ranking on the WCRA leaderboard. The event will begin with onsite open-qualifier rounds November 3 – 5. Those ranked in the top 10 from the open qualifier will advance to the Championship on November 6 – 7, where they’ll compete alongside the Top 10 from the WCRA leaderboard (segment and leaderboard details to be released at a later date) and an additional four competitors awarded exemptions from to-benamed events. “Working with our partners at PBR to provide female rodeo athletes an opportunity like this is a game-changer,” said WCRA CEO, Gary McKinney. “This historic addition of the Women’s Rodeo World Championship to the WCRA 2020 tour will give female ropers and barrel racers more opportunities, including the ability to compete for big-money payouts.” “Women in rodeo haven’t had the same opportunities as men, and they deserve this exciting national platform and world title competition,” said PBR CEO Sean Gleason. “We’re very proud of our partnership with WCRA which helps us celebrate and reward talented female athletes while inspiring the next generation of young women to pursue rodeo.” The Women’s Rodeo World Championship will be carried on RIDE-TV and RidePass, the PBR’s western sport digital network.

PRORODEO TARGETING MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND FOR COMPETITION

BY TRACY RENCK

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – ProRodeo is targeting Memorial Day Weekend for a return to competition, PRCA CEO George Taylor told The Cowboy Channel in an interview Saturday. Taylor addressed several topics in the interview, including the affect the COVID-19 pandemic is having on PRCA rodeos and a timetable for the possible return of rodeos. “You know, sooner is better, for sure,” Taylor said. “We’re really hopeful Memorial Day weekend (May 23-25) that we can get something started. We’re working very closely right now with Fort Smith (Ark.) and the local officials there in order to have a rodeo. Whether that means it is a fan-less event or reduced occupancy style of event, that’s really our direction and what we are going to try to pull off because we do need to get the rodeo engine going and have everybody in these communities see some encouraging things. We are really excited about the potential of starting that on Memorial Day weekend.”

Taylor also touched on the 2020 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Dec. 3-12. “We’re really working on what’s the format going to be in terms of additional entertainment we might have and how do we make this NFR even better than the last one.’

Beachgoers may see more Border Patrol agents on horseback

The Border Patrol said it will use more horse-mounted agents for enforcement along the coast. (U.S. Border Patrol)

San Diego County beachgoers may see more Border Patrol agents on horseback in coming weeks as the federal agency beefs up its presence along the coast to try to deter illegal smuggling of drugs and people. While federal officials wouldn’t release any details on the number of horses being deployed or the areas where agents might ride, a Border Patrol spokesman said any beach in the county would be open to such enforcement efforts.

“We’ve had horse patrols for many years,” said Supervisory Agent Jeff Stephenson. “The difference here is they will be seen in areas where they haven’t been seen ... in the past, particularly along the coastline.” Stephenson said agents will work with local and state officials as they plan enforcement patrols. He said the horses might be seen anywhere, from the border to Oceanside. “Our jurisdiction is anywhere in the U.S.,” he said. “There is nothing preventing us from operating on any of the U.S. coastlines.” In addition to preventing smugglers from bringing people and drugs into the country, he said the enforcement effort is designed to prevent further introduction of COVID-19 into California communities.

Largest Number of Adoptions in 15 Years – More than 7,100 Placed into Private Homes

MAY 2020

WASHINGTON— The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced today that it reached a significant milestone by placing 7,104 wild horses and burros into private homes nationwide during Fiscal Year 2019. This is the highest number of adoptions and sales the agency has seen over the last 15 years and represents a 54 percent increase (nearly 2,500 animals) over the previous year’s total of 4,609 animals. “We are thrilled to see the tremendous response from the American people to our new adoption initiatives,” said Casey Hammond, Acting Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Land and Minerals Management.

Jerry Kimmel

passed away April 3, at the age of 82. What started with one reining horse, Indy Star Dun It, soon turned Jerry and Kimmel Reining Horses into a household name. Jerry’s biggest dream for reining was to have full stands and engaged fans. Jerry’s home base, J Bar C Ranch, worked in tandem with McQuay Stables in Tioga, Texas, to produce some of the world’s top reining horses. Jerry’s own granddaughter, Lindsey Raymond, oversaw much of the breeding and fitting operations in Granbury. Kimmel Reining Horses is still in operation thanks to Jerry’s eldest daughter, Chris, who relocated the business and its horses to her ranch in Weatherford, Texas, in 2018. Gone but not forgotten, Jerry left an indelible mark on the horse world. In 2014, Jerry was awarded the NRHA Dale Wilkinson Lifetime Achievement Award.

Gerald Kimmel was born June 23, 1937, to Gerald and Edna Kimmel in Marshall, Michigan. He was a loving sibling to his younger brother, Jim, and his half-brother, Rick. He was an avid sports player and the class president at Marshall High School, graduating with the class of 1955. He married his wife, Carmen, on March 29, 1958. Together they have two daughters, Christine and Amy, and one son, Gregory.

Sheehan on the Front Lines of COVID-19

Italy Sheehan had more than just her early 2020 rodeo season taken away. She had a personal milestone pulled out from under her. The Shoshone, Idaho barrel racer was scheduled to compete at the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo, April 2-4 in Kissimmee, Florida. But now she has a more important task. She is on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic as a recovery room nurse at the St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center in Twin Falls, Idaho. Sheehan earned the opportunity to compete at Kissimmee when other barrel racers who finished ahead of her win the 2019 Wilderness Circuit standings opted not to race in Florida. “I was super-excited,” she said. “I scrambled to get my schedule changed.” COVID-19 altered those plans. “It royally sucks,” said Sheehan, the granddaughter of PRCA World Champion Steer Wrestler and ProRodeo Hall of Famer Bob A. Robinson. Now she spends her time in the 48

MAY 2020

hospital in full protective gear to ensure the safety of herself, her coworkers and patients. At home, she takes care of her two young sons, Diesel and Dually, on the family place where they ranch, raise hay and break horses in Shoshone, Idaho. Her husband Brett, a team roper, is also a manager at a vet clinic. “Our schedules have changed. The demand at the hospital has increased,” said Sheehan. “And things have changed at home. We wash and re-wash everything. I take off my work clothes before going into the house.” Sheehan competed in college rodeo for both the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and College of Southern Idaho, where she won All-Around and barrel racing regional titles. Prior to starting a family, she spent several years working in the ER in San Angelo, Texas, before moving back North to be closer to family. As of April 22, Idaho is currently reporting 1,802 confirmed and probable cases with 54 deaths. In Twin Falls County, where Sheehan works, there were 138 confirmed cases and 11 deaths. “COVID-19 has rocked our world,” she said. Be sure to check-out how other WPRA members are handling this unexpected pause in life in the May issue of the WPRA News and a big thanks to Sheehan for working on the front lines!

To gain approval, the generic form of the drug was shown to be the bioequivalent of Zoetis’s approved proprietary treatment, Dormosedan, which is confirmed to be safe and effective. “Licensed veterinarians administering detomidine hydrochloride should ensure they don’t inadvertently get the drug in their mouth, as safety studies have indicated the drug is well absorbed through mucous membranes, such as the lining of the mouth or nose,” FDA says. “Exposure of eyes or skin should be avoided and affected areas should be washed immediately if exposure does occur. “As with all injectable drugs that cause profound physiological effects, veterinarians should take routine precautions when handling and using loaded syringes to prevent accidental self-injection.” Available in 5- and 20ml multidose vials, generic detomidine hydrochloride is a prescription-only medication.

Department Amends H-2A Requirements During COVID-19 National Emergency (Washington, D.C., April 15, 2020) – The Department of Homeland Security, with the support of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), has announced a temporary final rule to change certain H-2A requirements to help U.S. agricultural employers avoid disruptions in lawful agricultural-related employment, protect the nation’s food supply chain, and lessen impacts from the coronavirus (COVID-19) public health emergency. Hay is for horses, but what if it leads to asthma?

Ed Kane, PhD

Research has shown that reducing dust and mold exposure from hay may help combat inflammatory airway disease and improve performance in racehorses. We talk with researchers who are studying this problem. Horses shown wearing an air

sampling device developed by Dr. Kathleen Ivester to monitor dust levels in the horses’ “breathing zone.” Photos courtesy of Dr. Laurent Couetil. A racehorse’s lungs are critical to its performance. In fact, after lameness, respiratory disease is the most common cause of poor performance in racehorses. Although a horse’s muscles and heart can be strengthened by training, its respiratory system cannot. According to Laurent L. Couëtil, DVM, PhD, DACVIMLAIM, professor of veterinary clinical sciences and director of equine research programs at Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine, as they reach full speed, racehorses take two breaths per second, inhaling 16 L of air per breath. At five furlongs, or five-eighths of a mile, a racehorse consumes 1,800 L of air per minute. The term “equine asthma” has come to be used as a “unifying descriptor of inflammatory airway disease [IAD], recurrent airway obstruction [RAO], and summer pasture–associated obstructive airway disease.”1 In fact, Dr. Couëtil and colleagues have proposed that the term “mild/ moderate equine asthma” replace IAD and “severe equine asthma” replace RAO in the equine literature altogether, although they acknowledge the need to preserve the spectrum of diseases that fall under the “asthma” classification.2 Lung disease affects oxygen intake and gas exchange, the main functions of the respiratory system. Dr. Couëtil’s early research focused on oxygen tension in equine arterial blood during treadmill running. “We know horses are unique athletes because when they exercise, their blood oxygen level gets extremely low,” he says. “We don’t see that degree of low oxygen tension in any other species.”= dusty and moldy hay, particularly from round bales.

Full Scope Naturopathic Medical Practice Prolotherapy Platelet Rich Plasma Dr Mike Cronin Stem Cell Therapy NMD IV Nutrient therapy

Prolotherapy is effective in treat-

ing chronic joint pain by stabilizing the joint capsule, rebuilding collagen and strengthening ligaments, and relieving pain. Injured tissues are infused with a nutrient solution of 12-20% glucose, vitamin B12, and lidocaine. Glucosamine may be added to increase stimulation. Generally, 3-6 treatments provide resolution.

PAIN RELIEF and

JOINT REPAIR

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)

treatment concentrates platelets from your blood which are then injected into ligaments and joints. PRP heals moderate to severe joint degeneration, cartilage tears, and arthritis damage. PRP provides stronger healing stimulation than prolotherapy. When pain is combined with joint inflammation, we often start with 1-2 prolotherapy treatments, followed by 2-3 PRP treatments.

Stem cell therapy can heal

severely injured joint tissues, including osteoarthritis. Stem cells and associated growth factors stimulate healing and regenerate new tissue in ligaments, cartilage, and tendons, replacing what’s been damaged.

Zimeta has been associated with rapid and effective reduction of pyrexia in horses. Biopharmaceutical company Kindred Biosciences announced this week that the FDA has approved Zimeta (dipyrone injection) for the control of fever (pyrexia) in horses. Zimeta, which belongs to the pyrazolone class of

The drug may be readministered for up to three days based on recurrence of fever. In a well-controlled clinical

evaluated. Zimeta is not for use in humans due to the potential risk for agranulocytosis (see sidebar). Additionally, the drug is not for use in horses intended for human consumption or in food-producing animals, including lactating dairy animals. In several countries, including the United States, people are prohibited from taking dipyrone (also known as metimazole). In 1977, the FDA withdrew its approval of all dipyronecontaining drugs for use in humans after reports of agranulocytosis in treated patients surfaced. Agranulocytosis is a serious and potentially life-threatening blood cell deficiency that can increase one’s vulnerability to infection. Although no data indicate that agranulocytosis occurs in horses treated with Zimeta, owners, handlers and veterinary caretakers should take the necessary precautions to prevent accidental self-injection. As a class, NSAIDs have been associated with gastrointestinal, renal and hepatic toxicity as well as coagulopathies. Clinics for a Cause to Benefit Equestrian Aid Foundation

The Online Riders Collective proudly invites riders to join Clinics for a Cause, where they submit video of themselves riding to the top trainer of their choice in any discipline for just $25. The proceeds benefit the Equestrian Aid Foundation's COVID-19 relief fund for equestrian business owners. Clinics for a Cause is helping mitigate the struggles equestrians are facing due

Wright, Jamie Bissell, and more. Alice Bruno, Jess Clawson, and Sissy Wickes founded Clinics for a Cause in March 2020 and have already seen an enthusiastic response from the equestrian community. “This program has accelerated at a pace we could not have anticipated just two weeks ago,” Bruno said. “We are thrilled to be part of the #HorsemenHelpingHorsemen mission of the Equestrian Aid Foundation.” Sissy Wickes has been instrumental to the project from the beginning. "Our equestrian industry has a long history of stepping up to help those in need. I am proud to say that Clinics for a Cause is another example of the generosity of spirit that pervades our community. I am honored to be a part of raising money for the EAF as they financially support our community,” she said. The Equestrian Aid Foundation, founded in 1996, provides emergency, lifesaving financial grants to horsemen and women coping with loss of income due to catastrophic injury or illness. EAF invests in the future of its recipients, giving them the resources to recover and thrive in the face of adversity. Through its Disaster Relief Fund, the Equestrian Aid Foundation assists equestrian communities in the aftermath of natural disasters or other events unpreventable through reasonable cautionary measures. EAF has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by offering grants to equestrian professionals in unexpected financial crisis due to industry cancellations, closures, and shutdowns. For more information, please click here. “This is a time when our community is coming together to find new ways to stay connected,” said EAF founder R. Scot Evans. “It’s a time to reflect, a time to learn, and most importantly, a time to support each other. We are so appreciative of the clinicians who have stepped forward to offer their years of knowledge and professional depth. They are turning this uncertain time into a period of growth.” Professionals in any discipline who are interested in participating as trainers should send an email to onlineriderscollective@gmail.com to be added to the roster. Trainers will be promoted through ORC and EAF and will promote this important fundraising effort through their social media audiences.
