MATTIE HATCHER GOES TRIPLE-CLEAR in Contribution to North American Team Gold at Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games

The North American Team battled through an intense jumpoff against Europe to win the gold medal at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games on Tuesday. Led by U.S. Youth Chef d’Equipe DiAnn Langer, Mattie Hatcher from the U.S., Mateo Coles from Haiti, Pedro Jose Espinosa from Honduras, Nicole Meyer from Mexico, and Marisa Thompson from Panama finished on zero faults and accumulated 10 clear rounds throughout three rounds of competition. Hatcher produced one of the three triple-clear North American performances with her borrowed horse Santa Rosa Valery. Africa earned the bronze medal with one fault. “I am so excited! All the trainers that were part of this team were out there riding every jump with us. The [riders] rose to the occasion and they got along fabulously; the team of trainers got along fantastically and worked together,” said Langer. “These riders got here through a selection process, so [each country] brought their best rider [to compete] under these circumstances: borrowed horses, being able to work with different nationalities, and all of this went into the selection process. This was a great group and I really enjoyed working with all of them.” The Youth Olympic Games jumping format allowed all five team riders to jump with two discard scores. Following the first day of competition, the North American Team found themselves in a three-way tie for gold. Australasia, Europe, and North America entered Tuesday’s final round on zero faults. However, they held a narrow lead over Africa with one time fault and Asia and Australasia each with four faults. The North American team brought the same level of intensity to the second round. They remained in a three-way 16

The North American Gold Medal-Winning tTeam (FEI/Liz Gregg)

tie with Europe and Australasia through four rotations, and their medal fate came down to anchor riders. Although Europe could afford faults from their anchor rider, Australasia moved out of contention as their anchor rider Mohammed Alqashouti picked up 28 faults following two fourfault rounds during their second and fourth rotations. With two four-fault rounds already, Hatcher (Little Rock, Ark.) and Santa Rosa Valery delivered under pressure to ensure the jump-off with Europe,

where North America executed the cumulative fastest time to solidify the gold medal. “[Winning Youth Olympic gold] is the best feeling ever over my whole career,” said an excited Hatcher. “We only had four days [to get to know our horse], but it went really well. She was easy to click with and so willing [to work]. The [USA Jumping] development program has helped me learn more about the sport and what we need to do to reach our goals. DiAnn does an amazing job of informing

NOVEMBER 2018

us what we need to do, and it’s a blessing to have [that guidance].” Now that team competition has concluded, the athletes will shift their focus to the first round of the individual competition on Friday. “Even though it’s an individual competition, we are all there for each other,” said Langer. “We’re still a team, and we’ll take a moment tomorrow to regroup and get our minds set for individual [competition] where fences will be a little bigger, so we’ll see how it plays out.”

TRUEWEST: 65 YEARS & COUNTING!

I have dedicated a good part of my life to seeking the truth about all the Old West characters, places and incidents covered in the pages of True West. Next year will mark my 20th anniversary as an owner and editor. With a wonderful team behind me, and intelligent fans who support our mission to preserve the history of the American West, the quest has been satisfying and, by turns, frustrating. No one can ever get the history completely correct, and nothing changes more than the past. For instance, everyone used to believe Billy the Kid was left-handed, based on the only known image of him, showing his holstered pistol on his left hip. Articles were written to back up this belief. Psychologists claimed the Kid’s southpaw contributed to his delinquent behavior, which inspired the 1958 Western The Left Handed Gun. But then someone noticed the buttons on the Kid’s vest were on the wrong side. Someone else noticed the loading port on the Winchester was also on the wrong side. Eventually, everyone realized that the Kid’s image was a tintype, and thus, it showed a mirror image. Oops. Scratch all of the above. The magazine does always strive for accuracy, a complicated task made easier thanks to the dedicated researchers and historians who work with us to share tales of the frontier West. A pal of mine, Arizona attorney William C. Porter, admires not only this aim to present the truth, but also how all of us have a good time fulfilling it. We do try to keep the history fun and entertaining, as well as expansive and eye-opening. Yet just like the clashes faced by Joe “Hosstail” Small, who launched this publication in 1953, our team struggles with those battles we can’t seem to win. The constant fight for historical accuracy was best described by another lawyer, and a Civil War 24

veteran, Robert Green Ingersoll: “The grandest ambition that can enter the soul is to know the truth.” As the magazine reaches the end of another milestone, its 65th anniversary, our True West family

not only aims to present the best and most factual stories of the Old West, but also looks ahead to how we can keep this history relevant for a worldwide audience, in all the ways our readers prefer to

NOVEMBER 2018

consume content. We hope you, and the next generation, stick around for the next 65 years.

Geronimo, the Gunfighter? On August 28, 1886, Lt. Charles B. Gatewood is escorting Geronimo and his band out of Mexico when they are intercepted by a large Mexican force of 180 troops. Near the U.S.-Mexico border, Gatewood and the Apaches meet the commander of the Mexican troops, who wants to see with his own eyes that Geronimo is surrendering. They meet under a tree and as introductions are made, Jesus Aguirre, the prefect from Arispe, hitches his holster around to a handier spot. Geronimo “half-draws” his weapon. Gatewood later says he saw a “most fiendish expression” come over Geronimo’s face, with the “whites of his eyes at the same time turning red.” The Mexican official backed down.

Read more about Geronimo in the April 2001 edition of True West Magazine. Order yourself a copy, today. STORE.TRUEWESTMAGAZINE.COM

NOVEMBER 2018

Not Bad for a Chronic Yawner In the Apache custom, his parents named him Goyathlay for a particular trait: “he who yawns.” Born near the headwaters of the Gila River, he grew up to be a warrior and struck fear into his Spanish-speaking adversaries, who noted he fought like San Jerónimo. The nickname stuck, and he became known as Geronimo. Not bad for a chronic yawner.

Geronimo on the beach According to Apache lore, one day Geronimo and a few warriors took off running from their hideout in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico and kept running until they came to the Pacific Ocean. They had heard about it and wanted to see for themselves. Then they ran back.

¡Ay Chihuahua! Most of us are familiar with the saying, “Ay Chihuahua!” which is the Spanish equivalent of “Yikes!” The entire saying is, “Ay Chihuahua, cuantos Apaches, cuantos Indios sin huaraches!” Which loosely translated, means, “Yikes! How many Apache Indians are there without sandals!” The saying refers to the time when legendary Apache raiders like Geronimo, Cochise, Juh and Victorio plundered the northern states of Mexico. Apaches wore calf-high deerskin moccasins, as opposed to the sandals of the locals, thus the play on words and the rhyming (Apaches-huaraches). It has been almost a century since those raids but it is quite amazing that this saying is still in use today.

Exiled Into Celebrity After his surrender in 1886, Geronimo became quite in demand at expositions, parades and fairs and he quickly caught on to the marketing potential and was soon charging for autographs, signed photos, even selling his head gear and the buttons off his clothing as souvenirs. The budding capitalist was so successful, by the time he died, in 1908, he had amassed $10,000 in his bank account. Imagine what Geronimo could have done on Wall Street today.

Star Players Nacho Figueras, Kareem Rosser, Pete Webb and Ashley Busch to Descend on the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships Nov 10th and 11th

In its 8 years since its inception The Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships: Horses & Horsepower is known for bringing some of the biggest names in the sport of polo each year to Scottsdale and 2018 will be no exception. For the 8 th annual event, headliners Nacho Figueras, Ashley Busch, Pete Webb and Kareem Rosser will take to the polo field at WestWorld of Scottsdale on November 10 th and 11 th hoping to reclaim victory for their respected teams.

First up making his Scottsdale debut will be Ralph Lauren model and world-famous polo player, Nacho Figueras. The Argentina born polo player, often called the “David Beckham of polo” will make his debut at the event representing the three-time defending champions, Aspen Valley Polo Club, in the signature match of the day on Saturday starting at 2:15 p.m. Figueras said he is excited to finally play Scottsdale. “I’ve wanted to be a part of the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships since it started, but the timing just never worked out until this year,” Figueras said. “Aspen Valley is the event’s three-time defending champion, and I want to help them fight toward a fourth victory.” Marking her second time playing at the Scottsdale Polo Party is USPA model and polo star Ashley Busch. Married to NASCAR Champion Kurt Busch, the polo star will go head to head with Figueras and represent Centtrip Wales Polo Team in Saturday’s signature match on November 10th. On the Wales team she will be joined by fan favorite and team captain Ricky Cooper along with one of Europe’s best players, Pete Webb. Look for Busch’s husband, Kurt to be rooting her on Saturday as her team attempts to break Aspen’s winning streak. Following the signature match of the day and making his third appearance at the Scottsdale Polo Party will be Kareem Rosser, who is considered the best African-American polo player of all time. Rosser will represent Work to Ride, the country’s first all African-American polo team in history to become high school national champions and to beat collegiate teams. The team has also been featured on HBO, 60 Minutes and ESPN. The summation of the event will be The International on Sunday afternoon, the highest goal match played during the weekend featuring the best players throughout the weekend. These will include Nacho Figueras, Juan Bollini, Pete Webb, and Carlitos Gracida, as well as America’s polo royalty Marc and Melissa Ganzi. During the two day event enjoy six polo matches, plus several events within the event like a preview of the Barrett-Jackson Car Auction (for 2019 bidder and consigner information click here), special performances by the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, The World’s Longest Catwalk Fashion Show, a Canine Couture and much more happening Saturday and Sunday. Country Thunder Arizona will roar into Florence like never before this April 11-14, 2019. Today organizers announced another jaw-dropping line-up for one of America’s favorite country music events. “2018 was a recordbreaking year in Arizona and we knew that we had to up the ante for 2019,” says Country Thunder Music Festivals CEO, Troy Vollhoffer “We are excited to announce these headliners for the incredible fans who have made Country Thunder Arizona what it is.” Also announced today were emerging superstars BROTHERS OSBORNE and HIGH VALLEY, country legends TRACE ADKINS, CLAY WALKER, RESTLESS HEART, the original line-up of LONESTAR, redhot up-and-comers ABBY ANDERSON, BRANDON LAY and the HUNTER BROTHERS, a performance from weekend hosts WILLIAMS & REE, and a promise of more to come! Stapleton has never played Country Thunder Arizona, but he is no stranger to fans of country, rock and roots music. The announcement of the five-time Grammy Award, and astonishing 14-time ACM and CMA winner, has been a major coupe for the 2018 ACM Festival Of The Year. The Lexington, Kentucky native is truly a once-in-a-lifetime artist who transcends musical boundaries and genres – Sunday evening will be a closing night like no other. 38

Dierks BentleyThere have been very few American country artists more consistent than McGraw over the past 25 years, and CT Nation will be thrilled when one of the genre’s consummate performers takes the stage on Friday night. Recent hit singles, Neon Church and Thought About You are currently showcasing the country music legend at the peak of his considerable powers. Saturday? Well . . . Saturday is going to be a party when homeboy Dierks Bentley returns

for a command performance on the massive Country Thunder main stage. During a roll which has lasted the better part of the past two decades, Bentley has amassed a shocking 30 hit singles – any one of them is going to sound amazing with over 30,000 home state fans singing right along! No stranger to stardom himself, Brett Eldredge could be the dark horse of a stacked 2019 headline line-up in the Arizona desert. With seven top-10 hits and

four top-5 albums to his credit, Eldredge has earned his stripes through nine years of relentless touring, and a reputation as one of the top live performers in country music – his Thursday evening headline slot is a guaranteed early weekend highlight. Country Thunder is known for showcasing not only the hottest acts in country music, but also introducing new talents that often transition to some of the biggest acts in the world. Both Eric Church and Luke Bryan were early afternoon acts on Country Thunder stages and have become two of the most recognizable names in country music. Country Thunder CEO Troy Vollhoffer is proud to continue this tradition and today announces Nashville New Faces - bringing the brightest young Nashville talent to each Country Thunder show. Throughout the year he won't just book them to play, but he will introduce them to the world during his podcast called Nashville New Faces! Be ready country music fans - the next superstar may be discovered here! Country Thunder Arizona 2019 is coming in hot - see you all there! Today (until midnight) is the final day for $130.00 four-day passes, after which time they will be available for four easy and incredibly low payments of $40.00 plus taxes and fees. Single-day passes are available for only $75 - there is no better value in live country music. Visit countrythunder.com to purchase, or order by phone at 1-866-388-0007. Arizona Fall Championship Draws Increasing Numbers

by Kristen Spinning Arizona Quarter Horse Association strives to give exhibitors what they want in all the shows that they produce. Delivering on that goal has been a big component of the upward trajectory of entires at the Arizona Fall Championship. The 2018 show held September 19-23 saw 7,603 AQHA class entries which represents 17% growth over the previous year. Exhibitors from across the country flock to Scottsdale for the event that has established a reputation as the “Show For Everyone” with its quality competition and awesome awards. “We saw increases in class entries across the board,” says Doug Huls, Show Director and CEO of Arizona Quarter Horse Association. He continues, ”I think a big draw for us is that we have great awards in all the levels.” Circuit Champions in Levels 1, 2 and 3 received bronze trophies, individualized to each discipline. The 2nd and 3rd place finishers in the circuit standings received embroidered denim jackets. Additionally, five Scottsdale Performance High Point trophy saddles where awarded. Best Of Show Awards meant even more exhibitors went home with great prizes and a variety of fun Giveaways meant anyone could be a winner. The show offered leveled classes across a full schedule of Rail, Trail, Halter, Showmanship, Ranch Horse, Reining, Cattle and Roping. While Scottsdale can be a little toasty in September, exhibitors enjoyed the cool comfort of three indoor, airconditioned arenas and warm-up areas. A few of the ranch horse classes were held outside in a covered arena. Leveling has always been a hallmark of this show. The ability to compete against peers is a big incentive for everyone, as seasoned veterans can match skills in L3, yet those relatively new to showing are confident they have a fair shot in their own classes. Huls notes that the Level 1 Select Amateur classes saw significant increases this year. This highly inclusive show really reaches out beyond the standard rail and performance classes. A Versatility Ranch Horse competition was offered and AzQHA also hosted a Trail Challenge using the natural desert area of the expansive West World grounds. Despite the explosive growth, classes were completed in a timely fashion each day. Schedules that allow for early completion times and professional staff are important to 44

AzQHA when planning a show. The biggest addition this year was the use of a new computer system that increased efficiency. Class scribes used wi-fi enabled tablets to record judges’ scoring. At the end of each class, the placings were instantly transmitted to the announcer. The system cuts countless hours of hand scoring from each day allowing classes to move fluidly from one to the next. Tablets also facilitated check in at each arena so that the next class was always ready to go. A mobile app system, Horse Show Tracker, was utilized for the first time to allow anyone on the grounds or back home quick access to results as well as draws and leaders in timed events. The combination of innovations proved a big hit with both exhibitors and staff. Huls and the show office staff have already identified opportunities where they can improve on the system to supply even more information in the future. He says, “AzQHA is committed to using the technology and advancing it so we can always deliver the best experience for exhibitors at this show and for Sun Circuit in March.” The show also held several NSBA Futurities. Tom Forehand showed off Cuz Im Sleepy with impressive style and movement earning top marks from the judges to the win the 3 Year Old Open Western Pleasure. Then owner Julie Beard showed that her horse had the consistency to repeat the win in the 3 Year Old Non Pro. Marvin Kapushion and Uptown Blazer were the champions in the Two Year Old Open Pleasure. On the English side, Sandra Morgan impressed the judges and won the

championship in the 2 Year Old Open Hunter Under Saddle on her marvelously fluid Only Inthe Mechanics. Sandra was center arena at the conclusion of the NSBA 3 Year Old Non Pro Hunter Under Saddle. She claimed a second champion trophy riding her handsome home bred gray gelding, Willy In The Sky. Moving on to the 3 Year Old Open NSBA Hunter Under Saddle, it was Deana Searles who rocked it on The Best Jazz Album Yet to take top honors. A solid field of 18 turned out for the NSBA 3 & 4 year Old Trail Futurity. It was an impressive class of junior horses, but in the end, it was Sugaray who was piloted beautifully though the poles by Chad Evans who won the trophy for owner Ashley Wilson. Amateur exhibitors who showed in both Cutting and Cow Horse had their pick to enter the $1,000 added Amateur Boxing Spectacular or the $1,000 added Amateur Spectacular where their cutting and reined cow horse scores were combined. Champions received a handsome trophy buckle along with the cash award. Christina Hampton and Smart Time Tucker won the Amateur Spectacular, while Janye Vatcher and Tommy Olena picked up the Boxing Spectacular win. Best of Show awards were presented in both the All Around Division and Ranch/Reining and Cattle divisions for Open Amateur and Youth. Open Champions received Professionals Choice gift certificate for the Bob Avila Collection, Cinch Jean and Shirt Certificate, and $100 Smart Pak Gift Certificate and Reserve Champs took home

Tom Forehand joined the Patrol this year and injected a good deal of joviality into each of his tricky games. Roughly $8,000 worth of give-aways came in the form of 50” TVs, vendor gift certificates, jewelry, custom hats and electronics. This great assortment was sponsored by Arizona Quarter Horse Association, Sami’s Fine Jewelry, Barbara’s Custom Hats, SmartPak, Standlee Feeds, Talon Air, Watson Hats, Show Me Again and Professionals Choice Avila Collection. Zoey Silver was burning it up on the challenges by being in the right place at the right time and having some mad skills. She won the RideA-Buck Equitation Challenge where riders were required to trot and canter without stirrups while keeping a dollar between their legs and the saddle. Those Eq ladies were a tough bunch and it took quite a while before Zoey was the last rider in the ring. She won a beautiful necklace from Sami Fine Jewelry for her efforts. She was also the winner of the Chap Race in L1 Am Horsemanship and received a Show Me Again gift certificate. The Gum Ball Guess Challenge was new addition to

It was good horses, great mules, awesome people, terrific judges and volunteers and tons of fun this summer at the HorseBreakers Unlimited Ranch Riding Buckle Series in Dewey, Arizona. The summer of Ranch Riding at HorseBreakers Unlimited finished up on Friday and Saturday September 7th & 8th. After the clinic and the show on Saturday Abby complimented everyone on “How much everyone's riding and horse show skills improved .” Many of the series winners were determined at the final show, so having a Judge with Abby's credentials was extra important. Cave Creek Equine Hosts Open House and Seminar

The event began with a welcome address by Dr Martin Vidal, thanking the sponsors and clients. Dr F Ross Rich spoke first about injuries in the Sporthorse, and emphasizing the need for precision when doing injections or blocks. Dr Martin Vidal discussed the importance of pre-purchase examinations, and reviewed the types of exams for the use / type of horse.

Dr Fabio Aristizabal lectured on equine ulcers and gastric ulcer syndrome. He focused on ulcer causation and treatments. Finally, Dr Clair Thunes followed up with how correct (and incorrect) feeding can either exacerbate or prevent gastric ulcers in horses. Clients enjoyed a catered picnic lunch, as well as a variety of pastries, provided by Cave Creek Equine.

Sponsors and representatives included Dr Emily Glidden of The Feeling Rider who engaged the audience in a helpful biomechanics exercise; Standlee Feeds who provided a number of wonderful raffle prizes including full bags of pellets and hay; Care Credit; Boehringer Ingelheim; Adequan; and VetGraft.

KATHY LITTLEFIELD: November article

In the four years I have been on the City Council I have been 100% supportive of the Scottsdale horse community, as my husband Bob was for the twelve years he was a Councilman. We both have fought to keep property taxes low, protect and preserve equestrian zoning and supported WestWorld and the Tony Nelssen Equestrian Center. Since Bob and I are not equestrians ourselves I have been asked, what accounts for our support of the horse community? Two reasons. The first is a very practical reason - tourism is Scottsdale’s #1 industry and equestrian events are a big part of our city’s tourism success. Lots of cities have nice hotels and resorts but few can match Scottsdale for equestrian venues and events. Beyond the shows, raising and training horses is big business in Scottsdale. Bottom line, horses are good for the Scottsdale economy! But there is a deeper reason I work to protect and preserve the equestrian lifestyle in Scottsdale – horses are a big part of Scottsdale’s special character, and I don’t want that part of our civic identity to disappear. Our beautiful city is already being overdeveloped and urbanized and, without Councilmembers who will fight to protect it, the equestrian community will eventually be squeezed out. That would be a tragedy for our beautiful city and I want to keep fighting to make sure that doesn’t happen. I don’t want the day to come when we have to take the horse and rider off of our city seal and replace them with a picture of a high-rise condo! So, I ask for your vote in the upcoming city election to continue to fight to protect and preserve Scottsdale’s special character and high quality of life, of which the horse community is a big part. I would be honored to receive your vote on November 6th to continue to be Your Voice on City Council.

oil and watercolor paintings and bronze sculpture. She will exhibit her work at Studio #18, hosted by glass artist Patricia Isaacson. Recently, Ciaramitaro unveiled a new sculpture that captured a poignant moment between a boy and his pet donkey. If He Follows Me Home, Can We Keep ‘Em, Pa?! depicts a local boy named Truett filling his back pocket full of hay in the hopes that the donkey, Tic, would follow him home. The life-size bronze freezes the sweet, whimsical moment with Ciaramitaro’s characteristic combination of soft naturalism and precision detailing.

The bronze sculpture also serves as an ode to animal rescue. The piece was inspired by Ciaramitaro’s visit to Triple R Horse Rescue in Cave Creek, Arizona, where volunteers work tirelessly to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome horses and other equines in need. To date, the nonprofit organization has rescued and rehomed more than 150 horses and miniature donkeys, and it continues to provide round-the-clock care while offering educational programming and volunteer opportunities for groups and individuals. Tic, the donkey featured in the sculpture, was part of a group brought to Triple R from Texas. “Although the miniature donkey had never been handled by humans, he immediately connected with four-year-old Truett. Truett and Tic forged such a unique friendship that Truett's family adopted Tic and have given him a forever home with them,” Ciaramitaro said. If He Follows Me Home, Can We Keep ‘Em, Pa?! is now available. A portion of sales from all of the pieces in the Tic & Truett Series will be donated to Triple R Horse Rescue. To date, Ciaramitaro has donated $2,400 to the rescue group as a result of sales from the series. Art enthusiasts can find details about participating artists, custombuild their own map or download a map at www.HiddenInTheHills.org. In addition, the Sonoran Arts League’s Center for the Arts will serve as the information headquarters for the popular art tour. Visitors can pick up artist directories, maps and inquire about other tour details prior to and during the tour. The League office is located at 7100 E. Cave Creek Road, Suite 144, at Stagecoach Village in Cave Creek. For details, call (480) 575-6624.

Wild horses have long been a part of the landscape of the American West. In fact, many acknowledge these horses to be a part of a lineage that goes back for centuries. Furthermore, wild horses have long been a draw to the American Southwest for tourists and conservationists alike. Of course, it is critical that we maintain the natural beauty of our landscape and the integrity of those animal populations that inhabit it.

GILBERT DAYS RODEO

The annual Gilbert Days Rodeo is fast approaching on November 16, 17, and 18! This year’s event is going to be big- we will be celebrating our 40th anniversary! As the 2018 Gilbert Days Rodeo Queen, and on behalf of the Gilbert Promotional Corporation, I am honored to invite you all to join us the weekend before Thanksgiving for an action-packed three day rodeo. Just twenty years ago, my own mother was under this very crown and banner serving as the Gilbert Days Rodeo Queen- the very title I have the honor of currently holding! It is such an honor for me to represent the very rodeo that my own mother and aunts have. During my mom’s reign as Gilbert Rodeo Royalty, she created the Kickin’ Up Kindness platform. With this, she would select ‘kind deed detectives’ to be on the lookout for ordinary people performing simple acts of kindness and write about them each month in this very newspaper! What a great legacy that I am able to live on. I am happy to report that the Kickin’ Up Kindness platform is still very much alive. I have received letters and stories of daily kind deeds being performed around us in our very own town of Gilbert. This month as Gilbert Days Rodeo Royalty, my court and I had the opportunity to meet with a Brownie Girl Scout group and educate them on the western

way of life. They came with smiles on their faces and stories of kindness in their hands. One story I loved hearing was of one of those girls adopting a rescue dog into her own home. Another said she donated some of her toys to the less fortunate. The tears welling up in my eyes reminded me that despite the negative news the media might portray, there is so much good in this world. I am so fortunate to simply share some of the good to remind others of this truth. It is true that ‘a kind deed is never wasted’, and I am elated to continue sharing that message throughout my reign. So, I am excited to invite you all to kick up some kindness and join us at our 40th anniversary Gilbert Days Rodeo! It will be a wonderful weekend focusing on family and kindness. We value the family unit and strive to keep that and our western heritage alive! In fact, this year’s royalty court is made up of two sets of sisters. What a treasure it is for us to represent this rodeo together. We are excited for the lineup of events that will be happening over our rodeo weekend. Our Lil’ Dudes Rodeo will be a blast, occurring each day before the pro-rodeo performances. Friday night’s performance will be at 7pm, Saturday’s at 5pm, and Sunday’s at 2pm. For more information visit www.gilbertdays.org. Round up some kind deeds and I’ll se you all there!

Roadmap for the future of Endurance

The FEI Bureau has set up a Temporary Committee with a remit to urgently assess the issues currently affecting the sport of Endurance and carry out an indepth review of the rules in order to identify the most effective way of bringing the discipline back to its original roots of Endurance riding as opposed to Endurance racing, with horse welfare and horsemanship at its core, while still maintaining the competitive aspect of the sport. The Temporary Committee, which has been established under Article 36.1 of the FEI Statutes*, will be chaired by Dr Sarah Coombs (GBR), a top FEI Endurance veterinarian who has many years’ experience of officiating at FEI Endurance events. Dr Coombs was formerly the British Endurance team vet, is a Trustee of the global equine charity World Horse Welfare and is also chair of its Veterinary Advisory Committee.

7070 – High selling horse in the third annual Legacy Ranch Horse Sale in Prescott recently was Bojangles Booger, a 2013 son of Boogers Cross Bell from the K4 Ranch, Prescott.

He sold for $25,000 to Richard McNay.

Pictured, left to right are McNay, Blain Bradley mounted, and Sarah Kieckhefer of the K4. The three legendary ranches, which teamed up for the sale were the K4, Campwood Cattle Company of Prescott, and the Diamond A Ranch of Seligman.

Crowds and Averages Up

in Third Legacy Ranch Horse Sale The sale tent was packed with the largest crowd yet for the third annual Legacy Ranch Horse Sale held in Prescott, Arizona, on September 15. Bidding was active, and when it was over, 29 ranch horses from three of Arizona’s largest and most historic working ranches had sold for a record overall average of $9,214.

K4 Ranch, and Campwood Cattle Company, of Prescott, and for the first time, Diamond A Ranch, of Seligman, teamed up to present a premier set of finished ranch geldings and mares, young green broke horses, and broodmares. In the end, the sale averages were: 18 geldings $11,239, seven mares $6,429, one yearling $6,900, one 2-year-old filly $6,750, one 3-year-old $2,500, and one young stallion $3,750. The high selling horse in the sale was Bojangles Booger, a 2013, buckskin gelding by Boogers Cross Bell, from the K4 Ranch. He sold for $25,000 to Richard McNay, Prescott. The high selling mare was Miss Playguns Pep, a 2013 bay mare consigned by Campwood Cattle Company. She sold to Bob Keith, Maricopa, for $17,000. The sale was held at the Prescott Rodeo Grounds during the three-day Olsen’s Equifest event. Potential buyers had the opportunity to view the horses in the arena prior to the sale, as they demonstrated team roping, dry work, and dragging calves to the fire in the true ranching tradition. The sale was managed by Doug and Donna Hanover, D&D Equine Services, L.L.C. Rick Machado was the auctioneer, and Jason Douglas served as color commentator.

PBR AND ACTIVE INTEREST MEDIA ANNOUNCE MEDIA RIGHTS REPRESENTATION AGREEMENT

By: Heather Croze

PBR (Professional Bull Riders) and AIM (Active Interest Media), which produces leading consumer and trade events, websites, magazines, and films/TV shows, announced a partnership today in which PBR will represent TV and digital media rights for two AIM championship series

86

in western sports along with a new original program in development. PBR will represent the TV and digital rights for AIM’s Equine Group, including the World Series of Team Roping (WSTR), United States Team Roping Championship (USTRC), and American Cowboy TV, a new original series slated to debut in 2019.

“We are excited to leverage the expertise of PBR and the greater Endeavor network to contribute to growth for AIM and the sport of team roping, broadening access and storytelling through digital, streaming and TV coverage,” said Tom Winsor, SVP Equine, AIM. “This new relationship will benefit nearly 40,000

NOVEMBER 2018

Team Roping competitors through expanded exposure.” In addition to selling the media rights of the World Series of Team Roping and United States Team Roping Championship to broadcast and cable networks, PBR will fully cover the upcoming 2018 events on RidePass, its western sports digital network launched earlier this year. RidePass will carry every round of both the USTRC National Finals scheduled for October 21-27 at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds, featuring 11,000 teams, making it the largest roping event in the world, and as well as the WSTR Finale XIII on December 9-15 at South Point Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas. With 4,000 vying for a purse exceeding $11 million, awarding more than $1 million each day of competition, the WSTR Finale is the richest event in western sports. The WSTR and USTRC will be offered on RidePass as a combination package for $19.99. Fans can also purchase a $49.99 annual RidePass membership, which includes coverage of WSTR and USTRC, INFR (Indian National Finals Rodeo), premier rodeo events from WCRA (World Champions Rodeo Alliance), and the PBR World Finals. “Our goal with RidePass is to be the place for fans to watch the best athletes in western sports while also discovering their unique stories,” said Sean Gleason, CEO, PBR. “Adding to the RidePass lineup World Series of Team Roping – the richest event in western sports – along with the United States Team Roping Championship is a major coup for our growing network while helping grow rodeo sports and provide these western sports athletes more opportunities.” Earlier this year, PBR began representing the media rights for the NHRSA (National High School Rodeo Association), WCRA and Days of ’47 Cowboy Games & Rodeo. Coverage for these organizations has increased with RidePass carrying the $500,000 WCRA Rodeo in Las Vegas in May; the NHSRA Texas State Final from Abilene, TX.; the National Junior High Finals Rodeo from Huron, SD in June; and the National High School Finals Rodeo from Rock Springs, WY along with Days of ‘47 Cowboy Games & Rodeo from Salt Lake City in July.

By Barb McLintock

With his pure white coat with just a black “sun visor” for a marking, Smokin White Gun, known as “Danny,” has become one of the best-recognized horses at the Western Dressage World Show.

But Danny is unique for another reason: He is deaf. Deafness can be associated with lack of skin pigmentation, says his rider, Joanne Haughan from Pennsylvania. Joanne, who is a veterinarian, explains that the cells governing a horse’s pigment and its hearing have a similar origin in the embryo and genes responsible for skin pigmentation are associated with deafness in some Paint horses. Working with a deaf horse does pose some unusual challenges, Joanne says. “He doesn’t spook at things ordinary horses spook at, “she says. At their farm, while the other horses will flee from the lawnmower, Danny will follow it around, hoping for treats. But he will spook at things

88

THE STORY YOU LIKELY WON’T HEAR

that suddenly appear in his field of vision. He hasn’t heard them coming, so they startle him. Joanne says she has learned to be his ears, listening for anything she can hear coming that’s likely to bother him, recognizing when it’s likely to appear for him and then distracting him or keeping him turned away from it. Where he lives at Bally Vae Farm, near Lincoln University in

Pennsylvania, his handlers have all learned that he may have issues with things over his head, or with sudden contrasts between light and dark. “It has been a learning curve for both of us,” Joanne says. But for all that, she wouldn’t trade him for the world. He started life as a reining horse and came to a barn where Joanne was learning reining. Having been born in England and grown up in Austria, she’d ridden a number of horses there, but as soon as she met Danny, she knew he was special. That was three years ago. “The minute I sat on him, I thought, ‘This is the horse for me’,” she said. She rode him for about two weeks, under the tutelage of her trainer, Lauren Annett then bought him.

NOVEMBER 2018

She started riding him as a reining horse but after a while, “I think both of us were getting a little bit burned out with that.” Joanne in particular was having a particularly hectic year. She was working full time, trying to finish work for her Ph.D. in veterinary medicine (her subject of study is analysis of the relationship between osteoarthritis and periodontal disease in horses), working full time, and trying to ride and show, as well. She ended up moving Danny to Bally Vae Farm, which is much closer to her home, and gradually switched to Western Dressage. “It has really done him a world of good,” she says, noting how much his gaits have improved. “But I think he chose it more than I did.” He made it clear that this was work he liked, and “he does have a great work ethic.” But still, she laughs, “I think his dream job would be to be in a petting zoo … he’d love to stand around being petted all day and being given treats.”

Luitpold Animal Health and National Barrel Horse Association Announce

Adequan® 2D Challenge”

Luitpold Animal Health, manufacturer of Adequan® i.m. (polysulfated glycosaminoglycan), today announced a new sponsorship with the National Barrel Horse Association (NBHA). The new Adequan® 2D Challenge

provides an additional $10,000 each to the 1D and 2D open world champions at the 2018 NBHA World Championships in Perry, GA., Oct. 29 to Nov. 3. “It is an honor to have Luitpold as a new national partner of the NBHA and for them to provide this incentive to our world champions,” says NBHA Manager of Marketing Relations, Len Carter. “Luitpold is making an exceptional investment in our World Championships in addition to the sport of barrel racing and we welcome them to our national partner team.” “Barrel horses experience wear and tear on their joints, which can influence performance and significantly impact their careers,” says Allyn Mann, Director of Strategic Partnerships at Luitpold Animal Health. “For 30 years, Adequan i.m. has been used by leading veterinarians, top trainers and riders because of its ability to help improve joint function by reversing the disease cycle, repairing cartilage, restoring joint lubrication and reducing inflammation.” 1,2 “This partnership is a natural extension of our commitment to joint health in the horse and we are excited to be involved with the NBHA – the leading barrel racing association in the world,” adds Mann. “We’d like to wish all the competitors at the 2018 World Championships good luck and continued success.” Adequan i.m. is the only FDA approved equine polysulfated glycosaminoglycan (PSGAG) prescribed for the intramuscular treatment of non-infectious degenerative joint disease (DJD) of the carpal and hock joints in horses. Talk to your veterinarian today to determine if Adequan is right for your horse. For more information, visit www.adequan.com. Please see below for Important Safety Information on Adequan.

NATE STRICTLY DIESEL : Tip for Nov.

Nate Brekken

Truck Talk with Nate Brekken

106

Your Diesel needs clean air!

I know I am a bit over protective of my truck. Every oil change I clean and re-oil the air filter in my truck. Overkill? Diesels are always thirsty for air. Emissions engines aside, there is no throttle plate to restrict the air flow. Newer emission engines do have a throttle plate, but it is only used to help assist in EGR flow, but I digress. It is always surprising to me to see the amount of dirt and contamination that is stuck in my air filter after just 5000 miles. Having a slight lead foot syndrome, I always want my engine to be able to breathe at it’s optimum level. Your air filter is one of the basic elements for taking care of your diesel engine. With a clean air filter you get better performance, better mileage, longer engine life, and a cleaner engine which improves your emissions at the tail pipe. It may seem too good to be true, but it really is that simple. If you live on dusty roads, frequent construction sites, hit the trails on the weekends to get to your favorite dirt biking spot - your air filter maintenance will be different. Be sure to inspect the air filter housing for larger debris and clean the edges of the air filter sealing surfaces in the air box to ensure that your air filter seals tight to your housing. If you run an aftermarket style air filter housing, be sure the clamp and sealing surface of the tube is in good shape. There are pre- filter kits to add protection to your aftermarket filter as well. Keep Strictly Diesel in mind when you go to service your air filter. We know what to look for, and can help you make a decision if you are looking to upgrade your air filter housing. We even have air filter kits in stock. Give us a call today 623-582-4404 or strictlydieselrepair.com Thank you!

$35,000 with the winner taking home $10,526. The Breeders’ Trust Pleasure Stakes consist of Western pleasure and hunter under saddle classes in two age categories each—2-year-olds and 3- and 4-year-olds. all around to compete for more than $23,000 in prize money. In addition, APHA partnered with the World Conformation Horse Association (WCHA) to offer big money to halter enthusiasts through two premier halter events: the APHA World Championship Show and the (all-breed) WCHA Breeder’s Championship and Big Money Futurities. All in all, more than $500,000 was up for grabs for halter horses—that included more than $118,000 in APHA Platinum Breeders’ Futurity classes, over $31,000 in Gold Breeders’ Futurity payouts, $20,000 in the Breeders Halter Futurity bonus payouts, $18,750 from the Lynn Simons Memorial Halter Futurity and $314,000 in the WCHA Breeder’s Championship and Big Money Futurities. The WCHA events alone drew 705 entries. All in all, APHA show entries totaled 15,215 (3,043 x five judges) bringing the total entries for all combined events to 16,131. In addition, the knowledge and skills of young judges were put to the test September 20 during the APHA HorseIQ World Championship Judging Contest, held in conjunction with the APHA World Show. Featuring both collegiate (junior and senior) and youth (18 & under)

divisions, the contest presented both team and individual awards in halter, performance, reasons and overall. Black Hawk College Team A took home the top spot in collegiate teams overall while Hunt County 4-H captured the overall top youth team victory. With the help of some dedicated APHA sponsors, two lucky Amateur competitors walked away with incredible prizes September 25 at the 2018 APHA World Championship Show, just by entering Amateur classes at the event. Through a random drawing of entrants in select Amateur classes, Scott Woodall of Edmond, Oklahoma, took home a custom APHA Western performance saddle with an estimated value of $15,000. The saddle was provided by APHA World Show sponsor Harris Leather & Silverworks. In addition, every entry into all Amateur classes at the show qualified exhibitors for a random drawing for a three-horse slant gooseneck trailer with an estimated value of $20,000. The trailer was provided by Platinum Trailers in conjunction with APHA corporate partner Cowboy Trailer Sales. Denise Vick of Taylorsville, North Carolina, was the lucky winner. Team roping heeler Rickey Green, a 10-time qualifier for the National Finals Rodeo and the 1988 NFR average winner, passed away Oct. 10 at his home in Stephenville, Texas. He was 61. Green competed in the NFR in 1977, 1978, 1982-89. He joined the PRCA in 1976. In 1988, Green won the average while roping with Charles Pogue. “I started roping with Charles (Pogue) in July (of 1988) and he really got me fired up again about roping,” Green said in the 1989 PRCA media guide. Green won his share of prestigious PRCA rodeos, and he also won the prestigious Bob Feist Invitational Team Roping. Billy Minick, who was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2018, took a moment to talk about Green’s character. “Rickey dedicated himself to helping other people and taking a deep interest in them,” Minick said. “He made everyone feel like a champion. In all the years I’ve been around him, I’ve never heard him say a bad word about anyone. His smile lit up the room, and his sense of humor made everyone at ease with him." Green loved the challenge of roping steers quickly, often before

they were completely turned off by the header, and it is said that the “Crossfire” rule in team roping was implemented in part because of his roping style. Julio Moreno, who used to be a header for Green, praised his partner in a Feb. 23, 1983, issue of ProRodeo Sports News. “Rickey has more talent than

anybody going," Moreno said. "He’s so quick, he can make up a lot of things.” Green was not only talented at roping, but he also was a talented horseman. He trained seven NFR team roping horses and an AQHA Superior Team Roping horse. Since 1991, Green focused his

talent and love of team roping on making learning to team rope fun for others. He became one of the bestknown and qualified team roping instructors around the world. He showed a special interest in novice, youth and senior ropers. The stories of Green’s passion for helping others become successful would fill volumes, and nothing made Green prouder than to see one of his students succeed. In 2001, Green released his first video in a series called "Knowledge and Techniques for Power Team Roping." His website, “Rickey Green’s Power Team Roping,” provides the most viewed team roping instructional videos. Green’s wife of 31 years, Kelly, also a top horsewoman, was the videographer and editor of his team roping videos. Rickey was proud when she shifted her equestrian skills from team roping to jumping horses. Their daughter, Whitney, recently graduated from Texas A&M University with a bachelor’s degree and is working on a master’s degree. The family team roping roots run deep. Green’s father, Virgil, has a sister, Darlene, who married World Champion Team Roping Heeler Walt Woodard, while Virgil's brother, Vernon, is the father of Daniel and Chris Green.

American Farmland Trust Announces the Winners of the Farmers Market Celebration

Today, American Farmland Trust, the organization behind the national movement “No Farms No Food,” announces the award winners of its Farmers Market Celebration -- markets around the country that have made a significant impact in their communities. This past weekend marked the end of our tenth annual event and with it the results of a summer-long effort to promote the importance of family farms and farmers markets. The Farmers Market Celebration once again garnered the attention of communities-turned-advocates for local food systems. Markets were evaluated in four categories: Focus on Farmers, Healthy Food for All, Pillar of the Community, Champion for the Environment. After months of participation and voting from across the nation, the results are finally in. First place, The 2018 People’s Choice Award, goes to, The Winter Garden Farmers Market -- Winter Garden, FL Runners up are as follows, 1. Swarthmore Farmers Market, Swarthmore, Pennsylvania 2. Charlottesville City Market, Charlottesville, Virginia 3. Clarksville Downtown Farmers Market, Clarksville, Tennessee 4. Williamsburg Farmers Market, Williamsburg, Virginia

Supporting local farmers markets is more than just a way to nourish ourselves, it’s a way to keep small farms viable. The beneficial relationship between eater and farmer is what AFT hopes to encourage and cultivate each summer and throughout the year as a part of the Farmers Market Celebration— showcasing and celebrating the markets that make communities proud. There are thousands of registered markets that participated and everyone put in a huge effort – please visit markets.farmland.org to see a full list.
