Abby began taking reining lessons from Drake Johnson at age 9 and was hooked on the sport. It wasn’t until age 17 that she had saved up enough money to purchase her first reining horse and pay the way to her first NRHA event. Lengel trained her own non-pro horses under the guidance of trainer, Drake Johnson. In the non-pro divisions, she accumulated earnings of over $72,000 before become an open rider in 2014. WestWorld in running to host FEI World Championships in 2022

A total of 10 countries have put in formal bids to host the FEI World Championships 2022, including two proposals to host the multidiscipline FEI World Equestrian Games™. Bidding countries are Denmark, Estonia, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, the Netherlands, United Arab Emirates, and the United States of America.

More than 20 years after Rome stepped in as host city of the FEI World Equestrian Games™ 1998 following Ireland’s late withdrawal, the Italians are looking to once again host the full Games. The Saudi Arabian capital city of Riyadh is also in the running having put forward an all-discipline bid for 2022. “The number of formal bids that we’ve received for single and multi-discipline FEI World Championships and full Games is an excellent indication that the interest in the World Championships is as strong if not stronger than ever”, FEI President Ingmar De Vos said. “We knew that some of the countries that put in expressions of interest back in February were just dipping their toes in the water, but these formal bids are a great validation of the new bidding process and show that we have a really strong product.” The FEI initiated a bidding process for individual World Championships in all disciplines for 2022 after the FEI General Assembly in Manama (BRN) in November 2018. The FEI Board decided that multi-discipline bids would 20

be given preference, and that Dressage and Para Dressage should be combined. The World Championships in 2022 in the Olympic and Paralympic disciplines will serve as qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The new bid process allows for the sustainable and cost-effective use of existing equestrian sports facilities, and was put in place to provide the opportunity for the FEI to partner with National Federations that may have hesitated to put forward multidiscipline bids in the past. In a key change to the bid procedure, the FEI hosted an interactive workshop at the end of March 2019 in Lausanne for all National Federations/Organising Committees that had submitted an expression of interest. The workshop provided interested parties with detailed information of the structure, opportunities and minimum requirements for hosting the FEI World Championships 2022. By working more closely with the National Federations and Organising Committees from the outset, the FEI and its stakeholders can establish an achievable set of goals and work towards a unified vision for 2022. All bids will be fully evaluated over the summer and allocation of FEI World Championships 2022 will be made at the in-person Board meeting during the FEI General Assembly in Moscow (RUS) in November this year.

Jimmy van der Hoeven an Win Level 4 Open Champ The 2019 National Reining Horse Association Derby presented by Markel Insurance provided a week of thrills and excitement for exhibitors, owners, sponsors, and spectators, escalating to a crescendo on Open finals night, Saturday, June 22. The Jim Norick Coliseum at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds was filled with an enthusiastic reining crowd that watched climbing scores and outstanding performances. Riders posted one massive score after another, making memories with every run. Several times it

looked as if a winner had been decided, but then another rider would raise the bar. Draw 29, Guaranteed A Magnum, by Magnum With A Dream out of Guaranteed By Amos, had lifetime earnings just under $200,000 prior to the finals. In fact, he and rider Jimmy van der Hoeven won the event in 2018, entering the arena as the reigning champions. “Casey (Hinton) and I talked it over before we walked in. It goes through your mind that you need to stay calm. Casey told me to ‘Ride what your horse can do. That’s what they do, and don’t try to do more than that,’” Van der Hoeven shared. “Those were the words I heard when I walked in, but it’s

Guaranteed A Magnum’s nominator Heather Hochstatter will receive a check for $3,000. Van der Hoeven began riding Guaranteed A Magnum, now owned by Chad and Molly Cherry, at the end of the horse’s four-year-old year in 2017. The next year, they finished fourth at the National Reining Breeders Classic before winning the Derby for the first time. They went on to win the Junior Reining Championship at the American Quarter Horse Association World Championship Show. 23

Non Pro Derby

Thirty-nine duos in a Derby that, by and large, confirmed the qualifier, with three of the four Non Pro Champions already with a foot on the podium after the go-round at their respective levels: at Level 4 Carlo Ambrosini with Gunnalittlestep, L3 Edoardo Bernardelli and the talented gelding Whiz Wild West and L2 Wolfgang Hammer and Mr Ricochet. The only “new entry” came from the performance of pretty, young Franziska Wallner, the only lady rider among the Champions, who advanced 12 positions from the qualifier with Mai Tai Enterprise, adding 3 and a half points to her score to take the Level 1 title. At the end of the go-round, nineteen-year-old Ambrosini told us that he had ridden Gunnalittlestep for the first time just the day before... It sounded like a joke, instead it was completely true. Indeed, blessed is the character of the Quarter Horses - or at least of some of them: Gunnalittlestep who, by the way, is only 4 years old, led him straight to victory almost without knowing who was in the saddle: “My father had entered the Derby himself on this horse but he could not be here when a work commitment cropped up suddenly,” Carlo explains. “For me, it was a pure stroke of luck! So, I want to thank my dad a lot, as well as Marco Pettinari who deserves all the merit for preparing Gunnalittle so perfectly!” A half point above his go-round performance brought the son of Gunnatrashya and Gay Jays Little Step to the top spot. Ambrosini describes him as “Really good and sincere; all I had to do was make a confident start and he gave me his everything. This horse may not produce +1, but he can achieve + ½ in all the manoeuvres, and this is what it takes for a Non Pro”. Carlo admits he was nervous as the final

approached as the fact that he was “standing in” for his Dad, whom he greatly admires, added that extra responsibility: “But I have learned that being decisive when you go through the gate always pays,” he explains, and his approach worked as well this time as it did throughout last year for the young rider from Lombardy who in 2018 made it into the world Top 20 with over $ 76,000 in lifetime earnings. Gunnalittlestep, previously third at L3 and fourth at L4 at April's NRHA European Futurity between the reins of Carlo’s father Pietro Paolo, was bred by Angelika and Markus Gebert but was started and trained at Ambrosini QH where he is managed by Pettinari (Rudi Kronsteiner also showed him in 2018). When describing the few hours he had to get to know this horse prior to entering the arena the first time Carlo is sincere, saying he did not take an immediate liking to him. “You have to leave him be, and let him “get on with it”, while I prefer to be a little more incisive when I ride. But then I realized that he is cool and reliable, and my confidence grew”. Now Gunnalittle is headed for the 4-year-old Futurities and all the European Derbies. A long road in which he will be accompanied by Carlo... “I’m going to steal him... sorry Dad, say goodbye to your horse! My thanks go to my mum, the Ambrosini Team, my girlfriend Francesca Bosoni and my best friend Andrea Pedrotti who is always by my side when needed”. In second place, with a 217, came another decidedly shy rider (at least when faced with a recorder for the post-run interview), the Level 3 Champion Edoardo Bernardelli. Edo, 28 years old, also from Lombardy, like Carlo came to Western riding at an early age thanks to his father’s passion. His partner in the arena was Whiz Wild West, who is in the running for the Open final with Mirko Midili in the saddle; “Mosè” was bred at Luga QH, sired by Spark N Whiz out of West Coast Oak, and in 2017 was crowned IRHA/NRHA Futurity 4 yr-olds Champion with Guglielmo Fontana: “A week ago we decided that Mirko Midili would follow me and Mosè through this Derby adventure, and it worked. This is my third competition with him: I have only had him for a year, but we immediately clicked; this is a horse that never holds back in the show pen. He needs to be managed and helped on the stop, which is perhaps his least convincing manoeuvre, but when you find the right key everything falls into place”. Now, straight to the European Derby, with Edo also looking after his three Futurity prospects. Co-Reserve Champion at Level 4 is the brilliant young Spaniard, Andreu Nogue-Puig, the rider who surprised everyone at the 2018 Big Futurity Non Pro by conquering all four levels of Europe’s richest-ever Futurity while participating in his first Special Event at just sixteen, thus immediately precluding his access to the lower levels. At the Futurity he was riding A Whiz N Cash, while here at the Derby his partner was Ricostyle, a 2013 mare by Ricochet Rooster out of Gangsters Chrome. After a great start to his 2019 Derby for Wolfgang Hammer here in Cremona, leading the Level 2 go-round with two of his horses, Chicago Lena and Mr Ricochet, on the “big night” it was the second, Mr Ricochet, son of Ricochet Rooster and Docs Oak Rosy, bred at 23 QH that assured his owner the title of Champion at Level 2 and Reserve Champion Level 3 with a smooth 214.5. Hammer bought the stallion, now 6, from 23 QH as a three-year-old and has since been riding the horse together with Tomas Martinek who is the trainer at Hammer’s barn, 80 kilometres from Vienna. The Austrian businessman has

Beet pulp is, you guessed it, the pulp left over from the sugar beet once the sugar has been removed, and is commonly used as an ingredient in animal feeds. This super fiber is a high energy, low protein and high fiber source, a great addition to horse, cattle, sheep and goat diets.

Here in Southern Idaho, we are in prime sugar beet growing country, as Idaho is the third largest sugar beet producing state in the United States. They are planted in late March or early April, and harvested in late September and throughout October.

Beet Pulp Pellets and Shreds 5 Common Beet Pulp Questions

Question – Do beet pulp pellets and shreds really need to be soaked? Answer – Beet pulp pellets and shreds are a dehydrated product so horses will pull moisture from their hindgut to fully digest it, if the beet pulp is not soaked prior to eating. Even worse, if your horse happens to be dehydrated, this will increase the dehydration in your horse if the beet pulp is fed without soaking. Long story short? Beet pulp pellets and shreds are highly recommended to be soaked (completely submerged) in water for a minimum of 15 to 30 minutes prior to feeding, or until properly softened. Question – Does beet pulp make a horse's stomach expand if it isn’t soaked? Answer – Any ingredient fed to horses will begin to fill the stomach. Un-soaked beet pulp will expand in the stomach, but it will not cause the stomach to expand or rupture. It just may be uncomfortable for the horse. Question – Does beet pulp contain sugar? Answer – Beet pulp is a by-product of the sugar beet, in which the sugar is extracted from. With that said, there is still a very small residual amount of sugar left in the pulp. Some

beet pulp has a very small amount of molasses added to it as a means of eliminating dust and making it taste better to the horse. Still concerned about feeding even the smallest amount of added sugar if you have a horse sensitive to sugar in the diet? It appears that beet pulp with added molasses is acceptable as a low sugar fiber option, if the beet pulp has been soaked and rinsed, prior to feeding. Research supporting soaking and rinsing beet pulp pellets and shreds, to reduce the sugar content can be found here. Question – Does Beet Pulp help with or prevent sand colic? Answer – Any fiber source (pasture grass, hay and even beet pulp) can move a very small amount of sand and debris through the digestive tract. However, horses that have sand in their digestive systems need more drastic measures to clear the sand. Probably the best option is psyllium products, which form a sticky fiber that binds and moves sand through the digestive tract. So, how can we best prevent sand colic in our horses? Feeding high quality forage Feeding off the ground or in feeders on mats Feeding in stalls rather than outside on sandy soil Question – Does beet pulp help with weight gain? Answer – Beet pulp works very well to support underweight horse, cattle, sheep or goat diets, due to being a high calorie (providing energy without excess sugar), supplemental feed. Derby Open: Go-Round Leaders As the curtain rose on the second section of the Open go-round things were hotting up both in the arena and outside where temperatures were, literally, rising. The overnight leader on 220.5 was Ann Fonck on Spook N Ruffles and despite the assault from a field of 104 entries at Level 4 the Belgian professional hung on to share the lead by upping the score posted the night before… on her second mount, Gunners Specialolena!

The mare, sired by Gunners Special Nite out of Dolly Jac Olena and bred in Italy by Luigi Parise, slid to a searing 221.5. Under the guidance of Ann, the pretty bay belonging to Diego Dalla Gassa, won the Belgium Futurity last year and was third at the NRHA Germany Breeders Futurity with an amazing 227.5 score. “Dolly” also accompanied Laura Dalla Gassa to the title of Champion at the 2018 IRHA/NRHA 4-year-old Non Pro Levels 4 and 3. “She was focused and really good to me,” commented Ann. “I had her through the whole season of her four-yearold year, showing her three times. We had time to get to know each other and build up a great relationship of trust. I

have been preparing her for this show now for about six weeks as she was kept home for a while after the Italian Futurity last year to have an embryo transfer and then came back to us.” Ann concluded, “If she makes any mistakes in the final it will be from trying too hard, certainly not because she doesn’t try hard enough!” Joining Ann at the top then came the gelding CSG Magnifique Gun ridden by Polish professional Lukasz Czechowicz, head trainer at the Roleski ranch and Level 3 Champion at the NRHA Euro Futurity Open here in Cremona last year on Katarzyna Roleska’s CSG Piggiemove and Level 3 Champion at the Italian Futurity last December aboard CSG Copshot. The 6-yearold CSG Magnifique Gun, also owned by Katarzyna Roleska, is by the Roleski Ranch’s lead stallion Colonels Shining Gun out of Im Magnifique (by Magnum Chic Dream). “He is a talented horse and was really good in this qualifier,” said Lukasz. “My plan now is to keep him relaxed before the final because he has strong manoeuvres and knows his job well”. At the end of today’s section, Ann also maintained third place in the qualifier with Spook on Ruffles. After the completion of the 2019 NRHA Derby Open Saturday night, the NRHA Million Dollar Dam list unofficially grew to two horses when Dun It For Chex’s offspring earned her enough to unofficially make her the second NRHA Million Dollar Dam.

Securing the Open Derby Level 3 and 4 champion titles was Cody Sapergia of Smithfield, NC, with a score of 225.5 aboard Mr Royal Hollywood, George and Carol Bell's 4-year-old stallion by Hollywoodtinseltown out of Cee Miss Hollywood. Sapergia complimented his horse's double-win performance. "The circles he ran really well and came back to me good. The first turn was really solid, quite quick and I stopped him square, so no penalties. The second set of circles and spins were also good, but I think that what really got the points were the stops at the end because he's a really good stopper, he's really good with the front feet, and he has a good position and goes a long way, so I was really happy with him today," explained Sapergia. Sapergia was looking forward to a repeat visit to TIEC and complimented his experience at the Carolina Classic.

"I was here last year for the World Equestrian Games as the coach for the Mexican Reining Team. It was great then, and I couldn't wait to come back this time because it's such a unique venue. It's really cool - really big arena, really good ground and there's lots going on with the jumping and stuff like that, so it's exciting," added Sapergia. With a score of 223.5, the Open Derby Level 2 champion honors went to Amanda F. Yarbrough and Gunners Shining Star, a 4-year-old mare by Gunners Special Nite out of Whiz Bang Spark and owned by Donald C. Burgy. Gilad Susman earned the Open Derby Level 1 champion title with a score of 219 on Stanley Coats' Sparklin Magnum, a 5-year-old stallion by Magnum Chic Dream out of Still Sparklin.

Abigail Ehringer Tops Non-Pro Derby In the Non-Pro Derby, Ehringer of Dawsonville, GA, took champion honors in Levels 1 through 4, with a score of 214 aboard her own All You Need Is Luv, a 6-year-old gelding by Wimpys Little Step out of Easys Lil Barbie. Ehringer was surprised to earn a win in all four levels and is proud of her horse's growth, bringing her score up significantly from last year's Carolina Classic score of 201. "My main goal was just to get through it with no penalties, and just have fun," said Ehringer. "I've been derbying him for almost a year and a half now, and we kinda just started clicking last fall, so now we're really getting comfortable together in the show pen, so I'm just now pushing him and we're doing well." NRCHA new Merit Award Example of the new Non Pro Limited Achievement Award riders will receive.

The National Reined Cow Horse Association Merit Award Program was created to recognize elite equine athletes that steadily succeed throughout their reined cow horse show career. Merit awards are determined by the horse’s NRCHA lifetime earnings – whether win checks are earned at regional or national level shows. The current award levels are: Certificate of Ability, Superior Cow Horse Award and Supreme Reined Cow Horse. Earnings won in the Limited or “boxing” classes are only applicable for the Certificate of Ability level. The NRCHA Board of Directors appreciates and recognizes the value Limited horses and riders contribute to the association, and in return have added a new award to the long-standing program. Starting in 2019, Non Pro Limited and Youth Limited riders can apply for the Non Pro Limited Achievement Award, a new level of recognition specifically designed for horses that excel in the Limited or “boxing” classes. - The horse must have earned a minimum of $15,000 - The horse must have earned a minimum of $1,000 in Limited Aged Events, such as Derbies or Futurities. This money can be earned in either fence classes or boxing

classes. - A minimum of $10,000 must be earned in Horse Show Category 1 Limited or “boxing” classes, including monies earned in the Select and 13 and Under divisions. - Monies earned in Category 2 classes will not count towards the award

Non Pro Limited Achievement Award recipients will receive a 16” x 20” custom wood plaque that includes a picture of their choice, the achievement certificate and NRCHA logo. All merit awards are presented at the NRCHA Year-End Banquet, held during the Celebration of Champions show in February. To apply for the Merit Award Program, complete the application and submit a one-time fee of $50.00 to the NRCHA Office by November 15 of the award year. All applicants are eligible for all levels of the Merit Award Program upon completion of each requirement. The NRCHA office calculates the applied horse’s show records and automatically processes the awards when each level is achieved. For many reined cow horse owners and riders, achieving merit status is an honor to be treasured. Receiving an NRCHA Merit Award is a true testament of a horse’s consistent performance through all phases of traditional Vaquero training.

Over the past week, we have received several inquiries pertaining to NRHA data and how it is secured. Serving as the standard-setting and recordkeeping body for the sport of reining, ensuring the safety and integrity of data is at the forefront of NRHA’s responsibilities. Although efforts aren’t seen by members on a daily basis, a strong line of defenses is in place to ensure that our history is protected.

NRHA maintains three separate, distinct databases: an internal production database for data pertaining to members, horses, shows, etc.; an external website database for pushing data to be viewed on nrha.com; and an accounting database. NRHA backs up all databases on an hourly basis and then a redundant backup is saved offsite every 24 hours. Archives of these backups also are saved for an extended period. There also are other layers of security such as edge routers, firewalls, intrusion detection, encryption, physical and credential authentication, etc. to control access to the databases.

This process ensures the integrity of NRHA’s data so that: Backups are available if the NRHA office was destroyed or another disaster recovery was needed Denial of service (DoS) attacks cannot affect internal processing If the website was compromised, the internal production database and accounting database would remain isolated and inaccessible from outside entities Heavy website traffic cannot impact internal processing.

The process of populating data on nrha.com is always to refresh the website database and all of the data displayed on the website. This ensures that the most recent and accurate data is displayed at nrha. com. Populating the website database inserts the newest data first. Occasionally, this process can get interrupted and leave the website only partially updated. This is what occurred during last week’s storms. Even though both databases are hosted offsite, the program that populates one to the other runs locally from NRHA. Thus, any interruptions in power can interrupt the update. “I am sure that many of you are much more technical than I am. Your questions are probably much more involved than the ones that I could formulate. However, it appears to me that our data is safe and the loss of power in our part of Oklahoma City did not cause any loss of information,” said NRHA President Mike Hancock. “NRHA holds the integrity of our sport’s records as a key component that’s core to our mission.” If you have further questions about NRHA’s recordkeeping processes, please contact NRHA Assistant Commissioner Christa Morris-Stone at (405) 946-7400. Bobby Diamond, Boy With a Horse on the 1950s TV Bobby Diamond, who portrayed a young orphan opposite Peter Graves and a wild stallion on the 1950s NBC series Fury, has died. He was 75. Diamond died May 15 of cancer at Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, Calif., author and longtime friend Laurie

Diamond also starred with Jack Klugman on "In Praise of Pip," a 1963 episode of The Twilight Zone, and played Duncan "Dunky" Gillis, a cousin of Dwayne Hickman's title character, on the final season of another CBS series, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. Legend has it he was in the running to portray Robin the Boy Wonder on ABC's Batman before producers decided that at 21 he was too old and went with Burt Ward

He's adopted by Graves' Jim Newton, the owner of the Broken Wheel Ranch in California, and forms a strong bond with a wild horse named Fury. (Newton's wife and son recently had been killed by a drunk driver.)

The show ran for five seasons, from October 1955 through March 1960, and then for years afterward in syndication. When Fury ended, Diamond said he turned down an opportunity to play one of the boys, Robbie Douglas (Don Grady), on a new show, ABC's My Three Sons, in favor of working on another sitcom, NBC's The Nanette Fabray Show. My Three Sons ran for 12 seasons, The Nanette Fabray Show one. "Great decision, eh? I could have been a multi-multimillionaire just from that alone," he said in a 1990 interview with the Los Angeles Times. A son of a real estate broker and a housewife, Robert Diamond was born Aug. 23, 1943. His mother, Pearl, guided him into show business, and he made his way into such films as The Greatest Show on Earth (1952), Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), 3 Ring Circus (1954) and To Hell and Back (1955). Later, he received top billing in Airborne (1962), a movie about paratroopers, and appeared in Billie (1965), a comedy that starred Patty Duke as an athletic tomboy.

2020 NRHA Rule Changes Approved The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Executive Committee and Board of Directors spent two days this week at the sport’s international headquarters in Oklahoma City discussing a variety of topics, all with one goal in mind—improving and growing the sport of reining. These significant conversations concluded on Tuesday, April 30. Accomplishments of the meeting included the following: - Approved 2019–2020 fiscal year budget - Approved 2019 NRHA Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship Show schedule - Discussed US Equestrian’s SafeSport and recommended NRHA Staff, Board, Judges Committee, and Youth Committee complete the program - Confirmed the Run for a Million—the million-dollar invitational class is approved under Category 11 (remainder of the event’s slates were pending approval at time of meeting) - A motion was made to recognize the earnings in a new category (not counting toward lifetime earnings). The motion failed to achieve the two-thirds majority vote needed to reverse the Executive Committee's original decision. - Updated board expense-reimbursement policy - Approved to move the NRHA Awards Banquet to the NRHA Derby starting in 2020 - Approved Calliope Sliders Reining Horse Club (Australia) as an NRHA Affiliate - Reviewed outcomes of 2019 North American Affiliate Summit, presented by Montana Silversmiths - Approved five-year transition of existing International Affiliate Program to encourage development of reining in emerging markets - Endorsed new Affiliate Regional Championships request for proposals - Approved Professionals Committee’s recommendation to institute a $20 opt-out Crisis Fund contribution with the purchase of NRHA Professionals membership - Approved to list event approvals (calendar) online only - Held preliminary discussion on 2020 Eligibility Policy, which is still in process with the Eligibility Committee - Approved new disciplinary action procedures When asked about the meeting, NRHA Past President and Current Vice President Rick Clark said, “I think it was a great meeting. We got a lot of work done and were very efficient with our time. The new bylaws and number of

board members allow us to make better decisions, faster. Many of us have different views and opinions, but we all respect and appreciate each other. Operations are at a point that they are running like a well-oiled machine. During this meeting, the board made some important decisions and came up with some good ideas for some new programs.” Each year, NRHA Members may submit rule-change proposals for addition to the following year’s official handbook. The NRHA Board of Directors discusses the proposals, sends them to NRHA Committees for feedback, reviews opinions shared by the membership, and casts votes at their annual mid-year (April or May) meeting. This week, the board considered 14 proposals and ultimately approved nine to become effective in 2020. “I think the overall direction of NRHA is exemplified by the relatively small number of rule changes that were submitted for 2020,” said NRHA President Mike Hancock. “This shows we’re moving in the right direction. We also discussed the Run for a Million reining to be held in Las Vegas. Although there is a variety of opinions about a new event like this, I was proud of the respect for the process the Board followed. Even so, this should prove to be an exciting event and bring heightened awareness to our sport!”

NRHA and NRHA Reiner Earned Awards at 2019 AHP Equine Media Awards Banquet The annual American Horse Publications (AHP) three-day conference features the Equine Media Awards Banquet. Held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, this year's AHP Equine Media Awards competition featured nearly 600 entries for materials published in 2018. After the entries were reviewed and the judging was complete, the National Reining Horse Association’s (NRHA) monthly publication, the NRHA Reiner, and the marketing department received multiple awards. Toyon Ranch’s Rookie of the Year Pathway for Lifelong Reiners

The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) and Toyon Ranch have partnered to support the grassroots of reining through the Rookie of the Year program. Sponsored by Toyon Ranch, the Rookie of the Year title is a goal that many beginning reiners strive for. Here, past contenders share their Rookie of the Year stories, advice for running at the title, and what it meant to them.

Their Time to Shine

The Rookie of the Year title is awarded during the Adequan® North American Affiliate Regional Championships (NAAC) held in Oklahoma City during the NRHA Futurity. It’s a chance for grassroots reiners to compete in close proximity to their reining idols—many of whom could be credited for inspiring people to get involved with reining—at one of the association’s major events. Holly Valerio, 2015 NRHA Rookie of the Year, describes the competition as the Super Bowl of Reining. “As a beginner reiner, I had the opportunity to compete at the same shows as the celebrities of reining,” she said. “Rookie of the Year is the title wanted by any beginning reiner. It’s our place to play as beginners. Plus, the prizes were outstanding. It was something I worked hard for all year long. It was a dream come true on a high level. It was a huge accomplishment to me.” Canadian reiner Magalie Boulanger, 2017 Reserve Rookie of the Year, said, “It was the most prestigious title to win as a rookie! I’ve always dreamed of showing in the United States, and it was such a great opportunity.” Boulanger is from Quebec, Canada. Contenders for the Rookie of the Year must compete in qualifying shows held by their local affiliates. The top 15 riders in each region at the end of the season qualify for the Affiliate Regional Championships (ARCs). From each ARC, the top 10 horse-and-rider combinations, plus ties, earn the opportunity to travel to Oklahoma City to compete for the Toyon Ranch NRHA Rookie of the Year title, saddle, trophy, buckle, and other awards during the NRHA Futurity and Adequan® NAAC. First-Hand Advice 2015 Reserve Rookie of the Year Kathy Loudamy, from Whitesboro, Texas, advised anyone going out for any title to “set their goals, knows the rules, work hard, mentally prepare, be a good sport, trust their horse, and have fun. I lived and breathed all those rules from the start. I researched all the avenues. All the affiliates. I set small goals for myself to get to each step. I decided SWRHA was the affiliate I would designate as mine and mapped out all their shows needed to qualify for the South Central ARC in August. When I qualified for the finals in Tulsa, I never lost sight of the Adequan® NAAC Affiliate Finals. But it was a much harder competition than I thought as there were so many good riders and horses. It's people from all over, not just your next-door neighbors.” “Going in with the big dogs was scary but awesome at the same time,” said Sandra Cochran, 2014 Reserve Rookie of the Year. “As a 112

rookie, you have so much to overcome—learning how to deal with the pressure of the high-point competition and my own pressure was challenging. My trainer was able to keep me focused on the pattern one step/maneuver at a time.”

Memories That Last a Lifetime

“Giving an opportunity to the rookies to work hard and set goals for a prestigious title is such a great idea,” Loudany added. “It takes a lot of hard work and dedication. If you have something to work toward like this, it makes it even better. I’ll never forget the Adequan® NAAC. It was that important to me. It's the accomplishment, the confidence it gave me, and knowing that I did it.” Cochran, the Colorado native that now lives in Sandy Valley, Nevada echoed that sentiment. “The feeling of that ride, with all of the people from Colorado cheering for me, is so hard to explain,” she recalled. “It was like I won the biggest event there is; the screaming and yelling was so loud. Everyone was so supportive, even those who I competed against were amazing and there cheering everyone on. I can’t believe all of the prizes. It was just amazing.”

Long-Term Success

Helping educate reiners as they start their journeys with the sport is crucial to setting them up to succeed and understand the organization's systems. “Aiming toward Rookie of the Year helped me understand the process of levels and accumulating scores (learning how the NRHA judging system works),” Cochran said. Valerio advised starting with the basics at the green reiner level until they get the most out of it. “It’s a learning environment. Know your levels, and work them to their max. Work your way out of and up through the divisions one by one, because once you are out of that division, you’re out. Go to judges’ educational meetings and seminars. It’s amazing what you’ll learn. The more educated you are, the more successful you’ll be.”

Day 4 Ancillary Winners at NRHA Derby

The National Reining Horse Association Derby presented by Markel Insurance features not only the big-money aged event, but also a full slate of ancillary classes. That means that the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds is busy with competition in both the Jim Norick Coliseum and the Adequan Arena.

The first slate of the Novice Horse Open classes was held on Tuesday, June 18. Several competitors will show again in the second slate on Thursday in hopes of winning the High Point Championship buckles presented by Montana Silversmiths. Nov. Horse Open Level 2 [1] Winner - Jared Leclair and Lime A Rita, owned by Susan Meyer 144.5 – 782.63 Topping the Novice Horse Open Level 2 with a 144.5 was Jared Leclair and Lime A Rita, owned by Susan Meyer. The win added another $782 to the seven-year-old mare’s lifetime earnings. “We bought her last year from Arno Honstetter. Both Susan and I have been showing her, and she’s been a really good horse to show. She’s one of those mares that, if she trusts you, she will do anything for you,” Leclair said of the mare, by Custom Legend out of She Slides Wright. “Today she was really good. She ran, stopped, and turned big, and circled really well. I showed her in the Open the other day, and she placed fifth and won another thousand. Today we had a nice run, but we just didn’t go as fast.” 116

Earlier in the year, at the National Reining Breeders Classic, Leclair and Lime A Rita won the Novice Horse Open Level 2 High Point Championship. “We marked a 76 twice down there,” he recalled. “We’ll show this mare one more time here in the Novice on Thursday, and that will be it for this one.” Leclair has ridden several horses for Meyers. “Susan has some really good horses. She’s been a great customer and we really appreciate her,” he said. Finishing second in the Nov. Horse Open Level 2 and topping the Level 1 as Max Fontana and Plum In Tinseltown. The pair marked a 143, earning more than $1,201. “I showed her last week and she did very well. We decided to just show in the Novice for right now, but I think she will do very well because she’s building confidence and is very nice in the show pen,” Fontana said. “She was really good today and with me all the time. I didn’t push 100 percent, but she was ready for what I asked.” Plum In Tinseltown, a four-year-old mare by Gunners Tinseltown out of Sugarplum Chic, is owned by Rabboni Reining Horses. “She’s a little green about the horse shows but is a very good mare. I’ll show her again in the Novice on Thursday. I thank Rabboni Reining Horses for letting me show her.” Taking second in the Novice Horse Open Level 1 was Sean Johnson and Heavens Bells (A Sparkling Vintage x Cowboys Belle Bar). Johnson and Heavens Bells, owned by Lisa Mauzerall, marked a 142.5 to in $395.

Lindsey McCutcheon Wins Bob’s Custom Saddles Novice Horse Non Pro NRHA Derby Championship

The 2019 National Reining Horse Association Derby presented by Markel Insurance is in full swing. They Non Pro preliminary round concluded on Tuesday, June 18, and not only determined the finalists, but also the Champion of a new award. For the first year ever, the event features a Novice Horse division in both the Open and Non Pro derbies, and the winners are determined by their preliminary round score.

Lindsey McCutcheon claimed the Non Pro Novice Horse title on Spooky Vortex with a 217, pocketing a cool $3,945 and qualifying for the finals of the Level 4 and Level 3. She also finished in a tie for seventh on her other horse Electalena (by Electric Code), worth an additional $943. “I’m so excited. As someone who always seems to show in the novice horse ancillary classes, I love having the novice horse divisions available. To have it as part of the Derby is awesome,” McCutcheon said. Although she hasn’t shown the 5-year-old Spooks Gotta Whiz gelding, out of Smart Sugar Pop, much, McCutcheon is very familiar with the horse. “He was owned by Harry and Susan Jones, who were long-term clients of my parents, and we had him through all of his training and my dad showed him. We ended up with him and are so grateful to have him,” she explained. “My dad showed him and I took over this spring. I only showed him at one little derby. My dad got hurt so we missed the NRBC. I’ve just been riding him myself.” McCutcheon is a veteran competitor, but she admitted that showing this year was a little challenging. “I wasn’t sure what to expect because I never really trust myself when I get a horse ready on my own. My dad’s been hurt so he hasn’t been riding much, and I was just hoping it would work,” she admitted. “But we went in and he was perfect. He turned better than he ever has in the show pen. I had to push him a lot, but he listened perfectly.”

As for the game plan for Friday’s finals, McCutcheon plans to stay the course. “I don’t want to change much, so I’ll just keep him the same. I just want to be ready when it’s time to walk in,” she said with a smile. “I thank Harry and Susan Jones for giving us the opportunity to have this horse. I also thank my parents. They’re the most supportive parents and have given me so many opportunities to show horses. These are two of the nicest horses I’ve ever had to show.” Finishing Reserve in the Bob’s Custom Saddles Novice Horse Non Pro was Sean Pulley and his horse Spook In Sparks with a 216.5. Spook In Sparks is by Smart Spook and out of Setting Off Sparks. Along with collecting a check for $2,401, Pulley and Spook In Sparks also qualified for the finals of Non Pro Levels 4 – 1. McCutcheon and Pulley will be recognized at the conclusion of the Open preliminaries along with the Bob’s Custom Saddle Novice Horse Open Champion and Reserve Champion.

Another way to clean your engine As long as I can remember, I have worked with a company called BG, or Kenz & Leslies. I have used their product since I started in this business. Our fix, at the time, was to fog the intake system with a product from BG to help loosen and burn up the harmful carbon deposits in the engine. This fogging of the engine worked, opening the throttle plate to look inside the intake manifold revealing a nice, clean, shiny intake surface that was not present before the service. Stallone first played the Vietnam War veteran and former U.S. Army Special Forces soldier in 1982's First Blood. That movie was based on David Morrell's 1972 novel of the same name. Franco Bertolani & Inferno Sixty Six Win Open

Day Two Ancillary Winners at NRHA Derby

Inferno Sixth Six, by Gunnatrashya out of Snip O Gun, has been catching eyes and turning heads since his three-year-old year, when, with trainer Franco Bertolani, he claimed the NRHA Futurity Reserve Championship after a run-off. Now seven years old, Inferno Sixty Six, owned by Slide or Die LLC, is back in the show pen. He and Bertolani claimed the Open [1] win at the NRHA Derby, collecting a cool $2,194. “I have trained him all his life, and he is such a nice horse. The last time I showed him was last August in Tulsa. I just started riding him again to prepare for the Run for a Million in Las Vegas,” Bertolani explained. The duo marked a 150.5. “He was good. We just went half-speed. I didn’t need to push harder. I just wanted to see what we needed to work on,” Bertolani, an NRHA Million Dollar Rider, noted. Bertolani and Gunner Dun It Again (Gunner x Dun Its Deja Vu), owned by Paulo Tripoloni, marked a 149.5 to win second, worth an additional $1,580. Int. Open [1] Co-Champion Tyson Randle & Suisse Code Tyson Randle hasn’t been riding Suisse Code for very long, but the pair managed to tie for the win of the Int. Open [1]. “He got sent to me about a month ago, right after the NRBC for a little change of scenery and to be eligible for a few different categories. I showed him one other time in Arizona, so this is his second outing,” Randle said. The pair marked a 145, worth $490. “He came together nicely today. He’s a real physical horse that can do all the maneuvers well. We got through the turns, which we had a little trouble with in Arizona. He circled really well, and he’s a big stopper with a lot of look,” Randle said. Suisse Code, by Electric Code and out of Shiney Sushi, is owned by Fritz Leeman.

Nick Valentine and Double Loaded Gun also tied for the Int. Open [1] win. Double Loaded Gun, by Gunner and out of KR Anniegityergun, has been pulling double-duty as a breeding stallion and show horse. “He’s been collected three days a week and still in training. To do that and get ready for a horse show is pretty special,” Valentine noted. Valentine added that Double Loaded Gun will show again on Monday. “He was really good today and was right with me the whole time. He was really quiet and relaxed, stopped well, and did everything I asked him to,” Valentine said. Double Loaded Gun, an eight-year-old owned by Doug Forzani, was shown as a young horse by Jordan Larson, and then did a spell as a non pro horse. “I’ve had him for about a year. He’s a really talented and goodminded athlete,” he said. “We need to make a plan for him. We might go to Tulsa and maybe Vegas.” Ltd. Open [1] and Rookie Pro [1] Shalene Chartier and Jacd Up Dually With a score of 144, Shalene Chartier and Jacd Up Dually won both the Ltd. Open [1] and the Rookie Professional [1], worth $522. “He was great. I was more than happy with him in the circles and everywhere else. He was very solid. I look forward to showing him again tomorrow in the same class,” Chartier said. Jacd Up Dually, a five-year-old gelding by Mister Nicadual and out of Footworks Yellow Jac, is owned by Tony Dudley. “I’ve shown him for almost a year now. He’s been so consistent and great for me to show,” Chartier said. Chartier has worked for Matt Armenta in Whitesboro, Texas, for more than a year. “I thank Matt for all of his help and encouragement, and Tony for letting me show this horse,” she said. Tying for second in both divisions with scores of 143.5 were Eva Rittner and Diego Gaona. The flashy palomino mare is by Shine Big Time and out of Corona Lite Chex. “We raised her. I showed her mother, and my sister showed her grandmother,” Keller explained. “She’s very similar to her mother. Her mom was a huge stopper, and was a palomino, too.” Keller and Coronarita Time tied for the Novice Horse Non Pro Level 2 win with a score of 143.5, worth $511. “She was great. She really stopped, turned nice, and circled pretty, and she was right there with me,” Keller said. “We started back riding with Trent Harvey in October, and since then we’ve won 11 or 12 thousand. She’s won quite a bit.” The long term goal for Coronarita Time, owned by Hilldale Farm, is “to win as much as I can then keep her as a broodmare. We’ll show her again on Thursday in the Novice Horse.” Nov. Horse Non Pro Level 2 [1] Co Champion Alicia Rapp and Loaded And Dancin Tying for the win of the Novice Horse Non Pro Level 2 was Alicia Rapp and Loaded And Dancin, nicknamed Dirty. “He’s an eight-yearold gelding I purchased at the end of last year from Mark and Shannon Rafacz. Open High Point Champion - Nick Valentine and Double Loaded Gun, owned by Doug Forzani On Sunday, Nick Valentine and Double Loaded Gun tied for the win of the Intermediate Open and came back on Monday to take sole possession of the title. That second win, with a score of 145, secured the High Point Championship, as well as a check for $1,323. “My horse is very consistent. We had the same score as yesterday, but he felt a little better today,” Valentine said. “He was a little tired yesterday, so I didn’t ride him last night and just let him chill and get more sleep. He had an easy warm up just to let him stretch his legs. He knows his job.” Double Loaded Gun, owned by Doug Forzani, has been working as both a show horse and a breeding stallion. His oldest foals are now weanlings. “This horse is really talented physically and is bred really, really well. His mind is very special,” Valentine explained. Valentine and Double Loaded Gun, by Colonels Smoking Gun and out of KR Anniegityergun, will likely go to Tulsa for their next event. “I thank his owners for trusting me with him, and my wife and family and everyone that helps me. You can’t get here by yourself, that’s for sure,” he said. Ltd. Open [2]/Rookie Pro. [2] Class Winner and Ltd. Open/Rookie Pro. She and the five-year-old gelding topped the Ltd. Open and Rookie Pro. classes on Sunday and returned to the Adequan Arena on Monday to repeat the wins, clinching the high point wins and more than $514. “It was very exciting for me. He was very honest both days I showed him, so I’m really happy,” Chartier said. The young trainer, who works for Matt Armenta in Whitesboro, Texas, had a feeling Jacd Up Dually would do well. “He felt really great warming up, and I knew he would be good from the time I rode him into the pen. I worked on the turn arounds a little bit before we showed and got some help from Matt, but this horse was good yesterday, so there wasn’t much prep for today,’’ she explained. Jacd Up Dually, by Mister Nicadual and out of Footworks Yellow Jac, is owned by Tony Dudley. “I thank Tony and all the customers who are so supportive and fun to be around. It makes it exciting. Thank you to Matt for the opportunity,” she said. Finishing second in the Int. Open, Ltd. Open, and Rookie Pro. was Kaleigh Geringer and Lil Coded Jac with a score of 144.5. First Winners Crowned at NRHA Derby The 2019 National Reining Horse Association Derby presented by Markel Insurance kicked off on Saturday, June 15, with the Non Pro ancillary classes. The big winner of the day was Shelby Clausen, who claimed the $2,000 added Non Pro [1] and the $1,000 added Int. Non Pro [1] on Smart Tinseltown. The duo topped the two classes with a score of 146.5. Smart Tinseltown is a 9-year-old by Smart Spook out of Tinseltown Lil Step. “I showed him all of 2017, and then we sold him at the end of the year,” Clausen explained. “We got him back in December of 2018. We love him and are super excited to have him back.” Shelby’s sister Anna has been showing the gelding, but because Anna is showing a horse in the Derby, Shelby got to take the reins. “Today was good. He’s been with my sister a lot, so it’s a little different. He’s more used to her, so it could have been better in a few areas, but he stopped and turned great for me. I couldn’t ask for much more,” the 17-year-old explained. Next is the 7 & Up class on Wednesday. “I’ll also show him in the second slate of Non Pro classes. I feel like I should go school a little bit. I’m still confident, but I’m glad I showed him today to know what to work on and how to prepare for Wednesday,” she said. Clausen added, “Thank you to my trainer Patrick Flaherty for all the work he does, and to my parents for allowing me to do this.” McKinnon Larcombe and Designed With Shine Win Ltd. Non Pro [1] McKinnon Larcombe and Designed With Shine have only been together for a few months, but the pair has already racked up numerous wins. The duo won the Ltd. Non Pro [1] and tied for third of both the Non Pro [1] and Int. Non Pro [1] with a score of 145. “She was really good. I was really happy with her. I haven’t had her that long and have just gone to a couple of shows,” McKinnon explained. “We probably had a few rider errors on my part, but she stopped, turned, and circled really well.” Designed With Shine, nicknamed Daisy, is owned by McKinnon’s aunt Shauna Larcombe. “My aunt trained and showed her, and recently purchased her from Rosanne Sternberg. I’m lucky to have the opportunity to show her” she said of the mare, by Smart And Shiney out of Taris Designer Genes. Larcombe has her eyes set on the 7 & Up class. “I’ll show in the Limited on Monday, and try to have the same run as today, and then show again on Wednesday,” she said.

Ron Thompson and Taris Dreamer Win Non Pro Prime Time Ron Thompson and Taris Dreamer took the win in the Non Pro Prime Time [1], and tied for third in the Non Pro [1] and Int. Non Pro [1] with a score of 145. Thompson and Taris Dreamer have amassed numerous wins together, including the NRHA Derby Non Pro Co-Championship and the NRBC Non Pro Championship. “He’s won quite a little,” Thompson noted. Thompson was using the day’s classes as a schooling event for the 7 & Up. “He was pretty good, and kind of did everything I asked,” he said. McKinnon Larcombe had actually leased Taris Dreamer a year ago. “She did a lot of schooling shows on him. He had some issued before she got him, but he’s better than he was. It was a good deal for us and a good deal for McKinnon,” Thompson said.

Willie Nelson releases new music video dedicated to his rescue horses A world away from the stage, and with the steering wheel of his old pickup truck instead of a guitar in hand, Willie Nelson loves few things more than to go on a drive around his 700-acre chunk of the Texas Hill Country near here. He calls his ranch "Luck" and smiles as he explains, "When you’re here, you're in Luck, and when you're not, you're out of Luck." Over 70 horses roam Nelson's ranch, most of which he rescued before they could be sent to slaughterhouses. "My horses are probably the luckiest horses in the world," Nelson said. "They get hand-fed twice a day, and they were just ready to go to slaughter is probably the last thing they remembered, so they’re happy horses." Nelson has included his love for horses in a CD that will be released in early summer. It's a song entitled "Ride Me Back Home." As he approaches his 87th birthday, Nelson is still touring and spending

about 200 days on the road. "It’s a lot of traveling and being away from home," Nelson said. "But that’s what we do." With the exception of a benefit performance in 2018 for then-senatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke, Nelson’s shows are void of politics. "We leave all of that at home," Nelson explained. "I think that’s why a lot of people show up, because they don’t have to worry about what they’ve been watching on TV all day." Though in good health and living a relatively stress-free life, Nelson noted that it hasn't always been that way, as reflected in troubles he had with the IRS. Nelson said, "I remember that I remember those guys." He's since settled his debt and moved on. "You're supposed to get a little smarter as we get older," Nelson said with a smile. "Every now and then, I think I’m getting a little smarter, but I’m not sure."

"To Steel, or Not to Steel?" By Lenny Alifi

Allow me to humbly say "Hi" and formally introduce myself. All who know me call my 'Lenny' Lenny Alifi. I've been a Farrier for over 45 years, spending most of my adult life in the desert right here in the Phoenix Valley, Apache Junction to be exact. I started my apprenticeship in Upstate New York and in Long Island. The man I served my apprenticeship under is Dave Birdsall who was eventually inducted into the Worldwide Farriers Association. Dave was old school, hard on me, and told me to go to school so I went to Western's School of Horseshoeing in the mid 1970s. I later returned to Long Island to work with Dave but The West gets under a person's skin and I had to make this desert my home.

From early childhood I'd always had a love for horses in spite of being a New York City raised kid and somehow, I just knew I'd be in equine care in some way as a professional. In the 1980s, I was very fortunate to teach at SCC and CAC in equine sciences. Over the many years of nailing steel to hoof, I've always pondered "Is there were a better way?" With all of todays advancing technology, maybe there is a better solution to this necessary evil of nailing steel to hoof. We put weight on a horses back and the sports and pleasure riding vigorously wares away hoof faster than natures growth can catch up. We have been nailing steel on to protect our horses feet since the 1400s. My observation of the Golden Wing Horseshoe is that it is not made of steel, has the strength of natural hoof, and has an amazing durability that is as close to barefoot shoeing as I have yet experienced. At first introduction to this strange looking shoe, I was a bit confused as to either embrace it or just pass it along as some oddity of interest. Either way, I was intrigued so I had to give it a whirl. I did and so far, it's been18 horses that I have shod and reset with this Golden Wing shoe. I must confess, it is becoming much less strange than it was 5 weeks ago. It gives the protection of padding a hoof and I love the shock absorption, it is just like putting hoof onto hoof. I still need more hands on observation with this innovative new product but the in very near future I hope to be able to answer the question; to steel or not to steel? NRHA Professional Martin Meuhlstaetter from Scottsdale, Arizona states “If this was an AQHA show with no money or prizes we would still attend.” In its 18th year as the California Reining Community’s all-time favorite show, Reining by the Bay offers world class competition as well as a beautiful setting for spectators. NRHA 4 Million Dollar Professional Andrea Fappani took a clean sweep of the Lucas Oil Level 4 Open Derby winning 1st, 2nd, and 3rd on his three mounts. The palomino mare Wimpys Little Tag, Whiz N Tag Chex x Wimpys Little Chic, showed off her exceptional talent those bloodlines gave her by marking a 227.5 for owner Freddie Brasfield from Tennessee and a paycheck of $12,929. Thebettertohearuwith, Spooks Gotta Whiz x Chex Out The Cowgirl, owned and raised by Bill Coburn took the Reserve Championship with a score of

Reining 226.5 and a paycheck of $8,888.69, followed by Rancho Oso Rio’s entry Spooks Show Time marking 223.50 and received a paycheck of $7,676.59. Total Fappani winnings for his Trifecta sweep $29,494.28! “Reining by the Bay is always a great show for our team, but this year was even better” states Fappani. “All three of my Derby horses showed great and gave me everything I asked them to.” Ricky Nicolazzi, another rider from the Fappani team, aboard Dunnits Special Nite, Gunners Special Nite x Dun It For Chex, tied for Reserve in the Level 3 Open Derby and Champion in the Level 2 Open Derby winning $5,683.60 for owners Rancho Oso Rio. Tom Foran riding Walla Walla Starbuck for Sleipner, LLC was the rider who tied with Nicolazzi. “Reining by the Bay has always been one of our favorite shows since its inception,” comments Foran. “The arena is huge with great ground so you can really showcase a horse. You have to really put a run together as the competition doesn’t get much tougher. My Derby horse (Walla Walla Starbuck) has shown great all year. He felt honest everywhere. He is one of the nicest horses I’ve ever had the pleasure to train and show.” The Protect The Harvest Non Pro Derby also boasted some impressive runs. Kim Muehlstaetter from Scottsdale, Arizona took home the Level 4 Championship aboard her home grown mare Tinselchex, Hollywoodstinseltown x Nu Tuf Lil Chex, with a score of 219.5 and winning a paycheck of $5,899.43. Meuhlstaetter is no newcomer to the winner’s circle at Reining by the Bay. She has had multiple championships in the Derby and Futurity divisions. Kim duplicated her success this year by taking the Level 4 Non Pro Futurity Championship aboard Spooks Grand Slam, Spooks Gotta Whiz x Shiney Diamond Lady, besting her Derby score by one point marking a stellar 220.5. “Reining by the Bay is a great venue to prepare a 3 year old,” comments Meuhlstaetter. “I like to show my Futurity horse in a big pen for the first outing, giving them more time to relax between maneuvers. The show pen at Reining by the Bay provides the perfect atmosphere. I was thrilled with how well he (Spooks Grand Slam) showed for me here.” The Meuhlstaetter name hit the top of the Level 4 Open Futurity Championship as well as. Kim’s husband Martin rode Spookneedsacocktail, Wimpyneedsacocktail x Snap Crackle Spook, to a score of 219.5 to take the win for owner Tami Schiltz. The Meuhlstaetter winnings did not stop there. Martin tied with Gabe Hutchins entry Xtra Wimpy Voodoo, Shiners Voodoo Dr x Wimpys New Pal, owned by Tamarack Ranch, for Reserve in the Level 4 Open Futurity aboard Bullets Whizzen By, Spooks Gotta Whiz x Docs Lil Bullet, and owner Michael Garnett, both marking a 217.5. This year was Hutchins first time attending the event. “Reining by the Bay is one of the best shows I have ever attended,” stated Hutchins. “The arena and atmosphere make an

Austin Roush started him and did a great job. He just keeps getting better and better,” remarks Foran. The SmartPak Non Pro Maturity is a fantastic opportunity for horses 7 years of age and older to shine. This year was no exception. Keri Blackledge and her horse Gettinaway Whiz It, Topsail Whiz x Getaway Lark, swept away with the Level 2, 3 and 4 division Championships. Robyn Schiller and her horse Plenty Of Guns, Dun It Gotta Gun x Plenty Of Rest, were Reserve champions in the Level 2, 3, and 4 and Champions in the Level 1. Schiller had high praise for her ten year old gelding. “He (Plenty Of Guns) is super consistent and fun to circle,” comments Schiller. “He knows his job, so all we do is keep him fit. We had the best run ever in the first slate of the Non Pro classes and taking the Non Pro High Point Championship. Overall a fantastic show for us!” Morris Kulmer is no newcomer to the winners circle and his gelding Dreamy Little Sailor, Magnum Chic Dream x Enjoy A Lena, has been right there with him. Dreamy’s NRHA life time earnings exceed $119,376.00, a remarkable accomplishment for this little gelding with a big heart. Morris and Dreamy took the Championship in the SmartPak Prime Time and Masters Non Pro Maturity. This is the second to last show for Dreamy. The fifteen year old gelding will be retired after the 2018 AQHA Select World Show. The coveted Bob’s Custom Saddles High Point Trophy Saddles are always an event favorite. This year four saddles were awarded in the Ancillary divisions; Prime Time Non Pro, sponsored by Cow Dog Saddles, Limited Non Pro, sponsored by Bob’s Custom Saddles, Rookie Level 2, sponsored by Rhodes River Ranch and DRHA Rookie, sponsored by Rancho Oso Rio. It took two consistent runs to claim these victories and the winners were beside themselves with delight. Ashley Jackson and Smart Like Steady, Steady Tradition x Bar S Docs Gay Bar, a 2005 gelding won the Limited Non Pro High Point Championship, marked a 73 in slate one. Laura Johnson and her 2010 model Vintage Sparks, A Sparkling Vintage x Chic Hickory Doc, kept it consistent and won the Prime Time High Point. Revolutionic, Einsteins Revolution x Nics Whiz, with rider Megan Lynch won both the Rookie Level 1 and 2 High Point Championships and took home the Level 2 High Point Bob’s Custom Trophy Saddle. Paige accomplished her goal of winning her first saddle, and my three year old Mister Nicashine was Reserve in the Level 2 Open Futurity with our trainer Ollie Galligan. It’s such a fun and well managed show with great footing. We are really looking forward to next year,” states Pastorino. “I’d like to thank Galligan Performance Horses for getting us here.” An avid fan and participant at Reining by the Bay, actor William Shatner had an impressive ride in the first slate of the Non Pro divisions marking a 71 aboard KR Electrified, Jacs Electric Spark x Faded Lac, winning the Masters division, tying for third in the Intermediate Non Pro and Prime Time Non Pro, and tying fourth in the Limited Non Pro. When asked what he thought of the show Shatner’s response was “One of the greatest shows in the country! I will be showing here every year as long as I am still breathing.” When asked what is in store for Reining by the Bay next year, co-producer Amanda Brumley had some very exciting news. “After the event this year we had a meeting of the Board of Directors. We discussed the challenges of this event for exhibitors, primarily it is more costly to attend due to its location. The San Francisco Bay Area is not an inexpensive place to stay. Even though we do our best to negotiate discounted hotel rates, we cannot compete with locations that are not on the world’s most popular places to visit list. Keeping that in mind, we have made the decision to up the ante a bit by offering a $100,000 Level 4 Open Derby and a $30,000 Added Level 4 Open Futurity in addition to what is already being offered,” Brumley noted. “Also we have been researching other options for accommodations and found AirBNB.com to be extremely useful and economical, so we will be recommending this option to attendees next year.” “2018 will be nineteen years since the Reining by the Bay’s conception and we want to encourage everyone to attend who has not had the opportunity to enjoy this amazing event,” notes Brumley. “You just have to experience it. An all-round project to improve the standing of world reining, emphasizing the role of breeders, rewarding the commitment of the most ethical professionals and helping more judges to gain experience in special events but above all, and this is probably the real revolution, radically changing the viewpoint on competitions for young horses. This is what Elementa Masters is all about

The official video of the Elementa Masters project was presented yesterday at the NRHA European Futurity in Cremona, Italy: this is the greatest and most futuristic challenge that the world of reining has seen in many years. Innovation is as philosophical as it is economic and organizational. The project’s creators, with no false modesty and with great moral clarity, have openly stated two basic concepts that are extremely ambitious: to launch the largest and richest reining circuit in the world and do it with a vision that focuses on the horses’ welfare at all levels. THE LOCATION. The venue is a detail of no small importance: the event will be hosted at the superb Elementa Centre near Rome. Following its purchase by entrepreneur Maria Cecilia Fiorucci, the facility is undergoing an in-depth restyling, also in view of its candidacy for the 2022 World Equestrian Games. At its inauguration, scheduled for 2021, Elementa will have 5 indoor and 4 outdoor arenas for athletes and visitors, a renewed Eventing course and stabling for over 800 horses. The hospitality section will boast three restaurants, a winter garden with a reptile house, a spa, a bathing lake (also accessible on horseback!), three club houses and, in a second phase, 22 chalets with private stables and saddlery for those who want to stay at the estate with their horse for a few days. EVERYTHING ON A SITE THAT “TALKS TO YOU”. The website www.elementamasters.com is already up and running, with a countdown to the moment when the regulations and final timing will be announced; in fact, the details that are currently being finalized will be made public on June 1, 2019. The platform is clear and userfriendly; furthermore, if you register your email now, you will receive a notification each time that news, updates, or further services are put online. For example, one of these will enable you to see whether or not you can register your horse for the various special events on the circuit by simply entering its name and date of birth. Because as we will see, Elementa Masters offers much but asks for something in return, in the name of reining’s ethical advancement. 146

THREE “WHOPPING” COMPETITIONS.

A 4-year-old Futurity, a 5/6/7-year-old Derby plus 5-yearold Stakes, a Maturity for 8-year-olds and over. The added-money: the round figure of one million dollars for the Futurity, three-hundred thousand for the Derby, one-hundred thousand for the Stakes and two-hundred thousand for the Maturity. Overall, THE HIGHEST FIGURE IN THE HISTORY OF REINING WORLDWIDE. Any horses or riders - where the riders may also ride different horses - who possess sufficient skill, perseverance and luck to win all three trophies, will obtain the Triple Crown prize, which will pay an additional one-hundred thousand dollars each to the rider, the owner and the horse breeder. In addition, the best mare in the Open and in the Non Pro finals of all three events, will receive the Pink Ribbon Award, fifty thousand dollars in total for the Futurity and thirty thousand for both the Derby and the Maturity. BUT THERE IS MORE. In Elementa’s opinion, reining must also give concrete expression to the enjoyment of life, advancement for young people and social support. The response is the highly enjoyable Free-Style event, at last boosted by a “real” jackpot (fifty thousand dollars) during the Futurity, the Euro Youth Team Trophy during the Derby and the Para Reining competition (with thirty thousand dollars added) during the Maturity. THE BREEDERS AWARD. Not limited to the Futurity alone but awarded for all Elementa Masters competitions. The horses entered on the circuit will have to be enrolled in the Elementa Breeders Program (EBP), to which stallions and foals can be nominated for FREE throughout 2019 and 2020. The additional money for breeders (eighty thousand dollars on the Futurity, onehundred thousand on the Derby and one-hundred and fifty thousand on the Maturity) will go to the top-five winners at each level, both Open and Non Pro. THE WATCHWORD: GROWTH. Not only as regards the prize-money, but also the skills. The method that Elementa has chosen to select the judges who will sit in the Masters’ arena, for example, is once again completely new and aims to expand the currently-limited number of highly-expert judges. Any judges holding NRHA/ FEI cards who are interested may communicate their willingness to collaborate at the Masters a few months before each event, registering on the relevant section on www.elementamasters.com. All those registering will be divided into AAA judges (who have judged at least two special events in the last two years), AA (who have judged at least one special event in the last two years), and A (if they have judged none), according to a model used by the US National Cutting Horse Association. The jury for each Masters competition will be RANDOMLY

DRAWN from these three lists IN THE PRESENCE OF A NOTARY; the final jury will be composed of two AAA judges, two AA judges and one A judge (in addition to the Equipment Judge and the Judges Monitor with the latter strictly of AAA ranking). In this way, judges with less experience will also have the chance to gain greater experience and advance their competence, as well as their chances of being called for further judging. HOWEVER… While Elementary Masters is ready to take on this enormous financial and organizational commitment, something will be required in return, as mentioned earlier. In the words of Domenico Lomuto, Elementa’s Director of Communications, the world of reining is called upon to “make an effort to change the specialty in line with a modern approach that responds more strictly to current social sensitivities, thus also improving the sport’s image”. Lomuto is currently negotiating with a leading TV channel to create a “reality show” based on the circuit. “The format would have to be fun and entertaining while the substance would be serious and competent. The aim is to shift reining from the fringe area to which the non-specialist media has historically relegated the sport on the few occasions when it has deigned to cover it. This media has, in fact, always portrayed reining as a childish pastime for an eccentric elite “playing at cowboys”. It is time to clearly demonstrate the technical essence of this sport, and the elements of excellence that may render it accessible and interesting to the wider public... who could potentially become tomorrow’s enthusiasts. However, for this to be possible the sport must demonstrate that it is ethically correct in its treatment of the animals involved. Therefore, one of Elementa’s declared and rigorously-pursued goals, and perhaps the most important, is to see the discipline move towards a more widespread competitive longevity of reining horses while maintaining the technical and emotional quality of the shows unchanged”. Hence the choice to reward breeders of older horses with higher amounts than those awarded to younger horses; hence the decision to start with a 4-year-old Futurity and not one for 3-year-olds and hence, above all, the circuit’s golden rule: to enroll for the 4-year-old Futurity the horse will

not have participated in any competition before January of the year in progress, and in the period from January onwards it will have taken part only in events offering limited prize money - the current hypothesis is to fix this limit at five thousand dollars. This would mean that prior to the big debut during which the young horse will have to compete to the limit of its abilities, its only outings will have been for “schooling”. Obviously, this condition also applies to the Elementa Masters Derby and Maturity, with the exception of horses that will be old enough to compete in these two aged-events in 2021 and that, therefore, are 3 years or older in 2019 and may have already participated in the 3-year-olds Futurity (or are about to do so) and/or other shows with significant prize money. Evidently, this will be the trickiest condition given the current “mood” of reining; yet, it is an essential aspect for Maria Cecilia Fiorucci. It is, in fact, the central element of the “new air” that Elementa aims to bring to the specialty, introducing stricter regulations regarding respect for the animals in line with the changes that were introduced in other equestrian disciplines some time ago. By choice or by force. ALL ABOUT WELFARE. These guidelines are also present in other rules characterizing the Elementa Masters: as far as the protection of horses is concerned, the shows will be regulated in accordance with the FEI/FISE code of conduct and anti-doping rules, which are stricter than those of the NRHA. Moreover, riders and breeders will also have to adhere to the ethical code of Elementa Masters that will govern all the activities on the circuit. The horses will undergo a veterinary pre-check before being admitted to the show pen; the warm-up arenas will be carefully monitored by stewards (a five-members Commission directed by an AAA judge as a team leader) and by a closed-circuit television system; there will be at least three warm-up arenas for each event to ensure a less-stressful environment for horses and riders, and a set break during which it will not be possible to ride (non-riding time frame), every night from 11 pm to 6 am in the morning. September 2021 is provisionally the date scheduled for the Elementa Masters ribbon cutting with the 4-year-old Futurity. There is, therefore, plenty of time for breeders, owners and trainers to choose and implement their strategies. The Derby + Stakes should then be held in April 2022 and the Maturity in June of the same year. 147

AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse Competition

Versatility Ranch Horse competition allows American Quarter Horses to demonstrate their ranching abilities in fice classes – ranch riding, ranch trail, ranch reining, ranch cow work and ranch conformation.

from the ranch cow work class; if the two are held together, they are still scored and placed as individual classes. This what the judges are looking for in ranch reining: “To rein a horse is not only to guide him but also to control his every movement. The best reined horse should be willingly guided or controlled with little or no apparent resistance and dictated to completely.”

The Versatility Ranch Horse competition promotes the athletic ability and versatility of the American Quarter Horse as demonstrated in five classes – ranch riding, ranch trail, ranch reining, ranch cow work and ranch conformation. There are divisions for open, amateur, cowboy and youth. For complete rules and regulations, refer to the AQHA Official Handbook of Rules and Regulations.

Ranch Cow Work – When it comes to the ranch cow work class, riders have the choice between ranch cow work or limited ranch cow work for youth and amateur exhibitors, where riders are allotted one minute and thirty seconds to complete the work. There are four parts to the limited ranch cow work: boxing the cow; setting up the cow and driving it down the fence to the opposite end of the arena; boxing it at the opposite end of the arena; and drive the cow back down the fence past the middle marker. For ranch cow work, there are three parts to the class: boxing, fence work and roping or circling. The horse and rider must accomplish all three parts in three minutes.

The Classes

Ranch Riding – For ranch riding classes, horses show individually, and the class can be conducted inside or outside an arena. In this class, judges are looking for relaxed, responsive horses with soft and cadenced gaits. The horse should make timely transitions in a smooth and correct manner, plus the horse should be soft in the bridle and yield to contact. Ranch Trail – Obstacles found in a ranch trail pattern are approximate to those found during the course of everyday work. Judges are looking for a well-trained, responsive and well-mannered horse that can correctly navigate and negotiate the course, and to do so in a correct and efficient manner. Rule SHW561 outlines the class, including prohibited and mandatory obstacles. Ranch Reining – Ranch reining measures the ability of the stock horse to perform basic handling maneuvers. This class can be held with or separate 148

Ranch Conformation – To be eligible to compete in the ranch conformation class, the horse must be shown in at least one class one of the other categories the day of the show. Judges are looking for balanced, structurally correct horses with adequate muscling. You’ll need to show your horse in a good working halter – rope, braided, nylon or plain leather – exhibit your horse at a walk and trot, then line up for inspection by the judge. The Divisions Open – Anyone with a current AQHA or AQHYA membership is eligible to show an American Quarter Horse in open competition. Open competition is usually for the most experienced exhibitors, trainers

Amateur – American Quarter Horse owners who do not join the professional ranks may enjoy a full spectrum of competition in the amateur division. Youth – Exhibitors 18 years of age or younger (age as of January 1) may show in this division. Cowboy – The cowboy division is for working ranch cowboys. The rider of the horse must either be an owner, family member or full time employee of the ranch that owns the horse. Employees must have been employed for a minimum of 90 days prior to competing in the ranch horse competition. The rider must have less than $5,000 per association lifetime earnings in any of the following: NRHA, NCHA, NRHA, ACHA, RHAA, ASHA or SHOT

or less than 25 AQHA or American Paint Horse Association open points in reining, working cow horse or Versatility Ranch Horse within the previous 10 years. No exhibitor can have earned more than $5,000 in any individual association. Points, Awards and Zoetis VRH World Qualifying Points earned in individual classes count toward qualifying for the Zoetis AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse World Championships. For AQHA year-end high-point awards, all-around versatility ranch horse titles are tracked. (In other words, high-points will not be awarded on the class-by-class basis). All-around versatility ranch horse titles are awarded at every VRH show to the high-placing horse-andrider team in the open, cowboy, amateur and youth divisions. To be eligible, the duo must enter and show in a minimum of three categories – at least one cattle class (ranch cow work), conformation, plus at least one of the additional classes (ranch riding, ranch trail or ranch reining). BY SCOTT KANIEWSKI COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A soft launch of the PRCA online entry platform was successful, Thursday, May 23, marking another step forward in the process to bring online entries to PRORODEO competitors. Using the openings of the Jordan (Mont.) Match Xtreme Bronc Ride as a test, Thursday’s goal was to exercise the application internally at PRCA headquarters in Colorado Springs. Entries came into PROCOM as normal, however, PROCOM operators used the new online entries application to take the entry information and enter it into the system. While the online entries process continues to be tested, a full launch is anticipated in the coming weeks. Once the PRCA online entry system goes live, competitors with Internet connections will be able to enter rodeos through a website using smartphones, tablets or computers. Among the features on the website will be map links to the sites of the rodeos, ground rules listed and alert settings. Competitors will be able to filter rodeos by circuit, tour, state and dates, among other options. They will also have the option of choosing the preference for the perf they want.

A NEW WORLD The versatile

Miss N My Diamonds is enjoying her new sport at the 2019 AQHA Ranch Horse World Championships By Ranch Horse Journal editor Andrea Caudill The sorrel mare’s coat was sparkling like diamonds as her trainer, Mike Miller, guided her around the sunny outdoor trail course at the Zoetis AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse World Championships. She loped logs, dragged a dummy and stood quietly as her trainer operated the wire gate. Competing in Versatility Ranch Horse is fairly new for Miss N My Diamond, but her partnership with Mike is familiar. The 9-year-old mare has been in his barn for the past five years, where he trained her for reined cow horse competition. She added VRH in the past year. “We call her ‘Macy,’” Mike says. “We rope on her, we start colts off her, we do everything on her. She’s just a really fun horse to ride, and she gives you everything she’s got, all the time. She tries really hard. She’s a strong, powerful mare and a wicked fence horse. I just really like her because she tries so hard, she’s been fun to have in the barn.”

The honest-trying mare competed successfully in reined cow horse with Mike, as well as high school reined cow horse with her previous owner. Jeffrey Simpson of Kirkland, Arizona, bought the mare, and requested adding VRH to her resume. The 9-yearold mare is by Cats Gotta Diamond and out of the Zan Parr Arrow mare Miss Amber Arrow. “She took to it really good,” Mike remembers. When she was specializing, Macy would get a little hot in the reining, but the opportunity for additional work has helped her quiet down, and helped improve the reining and cow work. “She’s a really nice mare,” he says. “You can do anything on her.” Mike is based in Collinston, Utah, where he focuses on training reined cow horses, but he was pleased with the opportunity to train her further. “This ranch stuff fits right into what we do at home,” he says. “It’s fun, and I get to do more training and ride horses more.” He is also showing the palomino mare Miss Norma Jean Prom (Ricochets Sue-Miss Lena Play Prom by Little Pistol Badge) for Simpson in the junior division. His wife, Morgan, is showing their own horse, Always In Hydrive, in the amateur classes. They bought the gelding at the Snaffle Bit Futurity Sale in 2010, and his name – “33” – is a nod to his hip number from that sale. “We were calling him ‘that 33 colt’ at the sale, and

that just kinda stuck,” Mike says with a laugh. It’s likely that Versatility will be sticking with the Millers, too. “I grew up working for different farmers and ranchers, helping move cattle, branding and sorting cattle, that sort of thing,” Mike says. “I got put on a horse when I was 2 days old, and my folks always say they couldn’t get me off a horse ever since. Danielle Ambrecht is a New York City police officer -- and a lifelong horsewoman. By Ranch Horse Journal editor Andrea Caudill

There is no doubt that the ranch horse world draws people from all walks of life. Case in point – Danielle Ambrecht, who by profession is a New York City police officer, but this week has donned her cowboy hat and is riding her mare, Shesa Midnight Oaker, in National Ranch and Stock Horse Alliance Novice Amateur classes at the Zoetis AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse World Championships. They are two very different worlds that work together in Danielle. If you saw her walking around the VRH show in her NYPD T-shirt on Monday – that shirt is well-earned. She has served in New York City for 13 years, and currently works patrol in Greenwich Village. “So, basically, if you call 911, I show up,” she says. “It’s a rewarding job, most days. You get to help people. It’s fun, it’s very interesting. I see all kinds of stuff.” The native of Long Island, New York, always loved horses. She started feeding her passion for horses with English riding lessons when she was 5. The lessons were sterile, she says – horses were tacked and ready, and there was no opportunity to handle them. She finally remedied that problem as a teenager. “That progressed into meeting the right people on Long Island and getting more into western riding,” she says.

She tried cowboy mounted shooting, and eventually found a barn that did cattle events. “The owner of the barn does reined cow horse and convinced me to give it a try,” she says. When she met trainer Aaron Ralston at a clinic, she finally discovered her niche. Aaron helped her get involved in VRH. “I like it a lot; you get to do a little bit of everything,” she says. Her mare, whom she calls “Jolene,” is only 4 but is already a good partner. Danielle bought her when the mare was 2 and sent her to Aaron for training. “She’s probably the coolest horse I’ve ever owned,” Danielle says. “She’s the brokest horse I’ve ever had. It’s kinda cool to go from my horses on Long Island, they’re good enough for what I do there, and then you come to a place like this and compete on a really nice, broke horse.” Jolene was bred by R.V. and Wes Echols of McDonough, Georgia. The mare is by Docs Oaker and out of the Smart Little Jerry mare Little Ma Bryant. Danielle has a big handicap in that she has limited access to practice for her ranching events – she lives in New York, while her horse lives with Aaron in Colorado. She gets to travel to ride and show about four times per year. “I love it out here. It’s not only an actual vacation, it’s a time to reflect and just hang out and relax,” she says. “It’s easier to live in the moment out here than in New York, (where) you get caught up in what’s going on. Out here you can enjoy what’s going on just this second.” There is one aspect where she has been able to merge these two aspects of her life: Working with a project called “Trail to Zero,” hosted by BraveHearts Riding (www.trailtozero. org). The program works to raise awareness of the problem of veteran suicide.

BLM SEEKS BIDS FOR OFF-RANGE CORRALS FOR WILD HORSES AND BURROS

Facilities must be located within Colorado, Utah or Wyoming WASHINGTON— The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced today that it is seeking contractors to provide corral space for wild horses and burros gathered from public rangelands in the West. The BLM will award contracts to facilities in the states of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming that can accommodate 500—3,500

wild horses and burros in safe, humane conditions. Corrals will serve as short-term holding and preparation facilities for animals to be transferred to off-range pastures or adoption and sale locations further east. Is chemotherapy a viable treatment for lymphoma in horses? Lymphoma can be difficult to recognize initially, and is typically diagnosed after the disease has progressed

Lymphoma—cancer of the lymphatic system—is a rare medical condition of horses. However, it also is the most common malignant neoplastic condition of the horse system. Horses of any age can be affected, although it more commonly appears earlier in life (from four to 10 years of age).

Lymphoma has several manifestations: multicentric, in the gastrointestinal tract, in the skin, and even in discrete settings. Lymphoma can be difficult to recognize initially, and is typically diagnosed after the disease has progressed, with clinical signs relative to the affected organ or tissue. Routine hematological analysis is often not helpful, as complete blood counts and serum

chemistry tests are usually normal. When hematological abnormalities do occur, they typically show as anemia, increased serum protein, and/or fibrinogen. Conversely, low serum protein levels may be seen, as well. A definitive diagnosis is made by identifying neoplastic lymphocytes, usually obtained by analysis of body fluid effusions (e.g. pleural or abdominal fluid, or by fine needle aspiration of

affected tissue[s]).

The prognosis for horses is usually poor, depending on the form of lymphoma, as well as how late in the disease process the horse is presented. There are several treatment options, including surgical removal of isolated, infected areas; radiation; or chemotherapy. Large doses of corticosteroids have been used as palliative care, as well. In some cases, complete resolution of the disease has been reported. Follow up on the response to treatment of equine lymphoma cases is rarely reported, probably due to the relatively rare nature of the disease.

What about chemotherapy? In human oncology, chemotherapy is a mainstay of treatment. In horses, however, its use is less common. There are a few isolated case reports; however, until 2019, there was no study that evaluated the response to chemotherapeutic protocols in a larger number of horses. Now, Daniela Luethy, DVM, Dipl. ACVIM, from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, in Kennett Square, Pa., has published a retrospective study of 15 horses with a variety of lymphoma presentations, using a variety of chemotherapeutic protocols. The results suggest some optimism may be warranted when treating equine lymphoma patients with chemotherapeutic agents, especially when the condition is recognized early.

Published in the March-April 2019 issue of the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine (JVIM), the retrospective study identified 15 cases of equine lymphoma in which adequate data for analysis was identified. The median age of the horses was 11 years (range, four to 25 years). 176

USDA Proposes Bold Moves to Improve Forest, Grassland Management

WASHINGTON, DC JUNE 12, 2019 -

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Forest Service (USFS) released proposed changes to modernize how the agency complies with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The proposed updates would not only give the Forest Service the

tools and flexibility to manage the land and tackle critical challenges like wildfire, insects, and disease but also improve service to the American people. Revising the rules will improve forest conditions and make it simpler for people to use and enjoy their national forests and grasslands at

lower cost to the taxpayer. The revised rules will also make it easier to maintain and repair the infrastructure people need to use and enjoy their public lands—the roads, trails, campgrounds, and other facilities. While these proposed changes will save time and resources, they

are ultimately intended to better protect people, communities and forests from catastrophic wildfire and ensure a high level of engagement with people and communities when doing related work and associated environmental analyses. “We are committed to doing the work to protect people and infrastructure from catastrophic wildfire. With millions of acres in need of treatment, years of costly analysis and delays are not an acceptable solution – especially when data and experience show us we can get this work done with strong environmental protection standards as well as protect communities, livelihoods and resources,” said Secretary Perdue. In 2008, the Forest Service codified its procedures for complying with NEPA in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) at 36 CFR 220. However, these regulations, in large part, still reflect the policies and practices established by the agency’s 1992 NEPA Manual and Handbook. The updates would create a new suite of “categorical exclusions,” a classification under the NEPA excluding certain routine activities from more extensive, time-consuming analysis under an environmental assessment or environmental impact statement. The proposed categorical exclusions would be for restoration projects, roads and trails management, and recreation and facility management, as well as special use authorizations that issue permits for outfitters and guides, community organizations, civic groups and others who seek to recreate on our national forests and grasslands. The new categorical exclusions are based on intensive analysis of hundreds of environmental assessments and related data and when fully implemented will reduce process delays for routine activities by months or years.

Liver Transplant Puts Pam Stubbs Back in the Saddle

Pam Stubbs had felt so bad for so long that she'd forgotten what it was like to feel good. Initially chalking up bothersome symptoms to an ongoing push to expand her real estate career in Scottsdale, Arizona, Pam's health issues came to head in late 2015.

BLM estimates 88,090 wild horses and burros in 10 Western states – the largest population estimate since the 1971

The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board will meet July 9-11 in Boise, Idaho, and October 2931 in Washington, D.C. The Board will discuss the pressing challenges of wild horse and burro management, including the number of unadopted and unsold animals in BLM facilities and the effects of overpopulation on public lands. Both meetings will be livestreamed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time July 10-11 and October 30-31 at www.blm. gov/live. The BLM will host a site visit for the Advisory Board to a local wild horse herd management area on July 9. The National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board is comprised of individuals

representing a diverse range of stakeholders and interests. The Board provides advice and recommendations to the BLM as the agency carries out its responsibilities under the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act. The law mandates the protection and management of these free-roaming animals in a manner that ensures healthy herds at levels consistent with the land’s capacity to sustainably support them as part of BLM’s multiple-use mission. As of March 1, 2019, the BLM estimated public rangelands were home to approximately 88,090 wild horses and burros in 10 Western states – the largest population estimate since the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act was

passed – and more than three times the number the habitat can sustainably support in conjunction with other authorized land uses. At the same time, the BLM continues to care for approximately 50,000 unadopted and unsold animals in its off-range corrals and pastures, costing taxpayers $50 million annually – nearly two-thirds of the Wild Horse and Burro Program annual budget. This is Hoppi , a 1350 pound paint with the personality of a big sweet people magnet, much like a big dog . Hoppi has been barefoot for over a year before I placed his first set of shoes on .

I chose to apply golden wing horseshoes that had him change his attitude from walking on eggshells to being in a different mindset 'happy ' . I felt this was going to be a lesson in a whole different context that has the potential of changing the face of shoeing in the world would, that is beginning to catch on in countries throughout Europe and right here in our backyard, Arizona. The place where golden

wing horseshoes came to mind through many painstaking years of designing and going back and forth to the drawing board. My findings so far tells me that this is not a magic potion for fixing lameness on seriously damaged feet ,no really. As far as I know, perfect to keep any sport , running horse , jumpers etc., from developing serious problems that are common with steel

and aluminum. Problems that develop from shoes to long between intervals, or tight ,short fitting will force the horn structure to follow the path to least resistance. As with the material that makes up golden wing this is the exact opposite effects for it is so much like the hoof . I was happy with the condition inside the feet and it did not dehydrate spite the hot summer sun. 193

Ranch Horse World Championships Wrap-Up That’s a wrap on the 2019 Zoetis AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse World Championships. Exhibitors from 30 states and Costa Rica competed for seven VRH world championship titles, 42 VRH class championships, seven NRSHA all-around championships, eight Level 1 youth and eight Level 1 amateur class championships, and 18 Ranching Heritage Challenge championships. Plus AQHA Top Ranching Heritage Bred Horse Awards were presented to the overall highest placing horses in youth and amateur divisions of the Cattle Level 1 and the overall highest placing horse at the Zoetis VRH World. The Zoetis AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse World Championships ran June 18-23 at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma.

Between the 2019 Zoetis VRH World, Zoetis RHC Finals, Level 1 Cattle and NRSHA National Championships, nearly 400 horses and more than 350 exhibitors competed in a variety of ranch events, including ranch cutting, team roping, working cow horse and ranch conformation. There were more than 2,300 entries in the show and the purse reached nearly $210,000. “Congratulations to all of our competitors, these four ranch horse shows showcase the talent and skill of our ranching competitors,” said AQHA Chief Show Officer Pete Kyle. “We appreciate all of the exhibitors, owners, trainers and breeders for attending the show and want to congratulate them for their wins or for simply hitting personal bests at the 2019 Zoetis VRH World.” AQHA Professional Horsemen volunteered their time to give free Ride the Pattern clinics. These clinics gave exhibitors and spectators the perfect opportunity to learn how AQHA Professional Horsemen would approach a specific Zoetis VRH World pattern. Thanks to the generosity of the Ride the Pattern Clinics attendees, the AQHA Professional Horsemen’s Crisis Fund raised more than $500.
