70-year-old American Wins 1,000km Mongol Derby

‘Longest Horse Race in the World’

Robert Long, known by the nickname Cowboy Bob,

is the oldest winner of Mongol Derby, the 1,000 km world's longest horse race, sits on his horse near Jargalt, Mongolia, Aug. 14, 2019.

By Jesse Convertino

A 70-year-old American man has become the oldest person to win a Mongolian horse race that the Guiness Book of World Records lists as the world's longest multi-horse race in the world.

The 1,000 kilometer (621-mile) Mongol Derby draws competitors from around the world to participate in what the event claims is the “world’s toughest horse race” -- a grueling 10-day journey across the vast, green Mongol steppe. Every 20-to-40 kilometers, riders mount a fresh, semi-wild horse, of which there were more than 1,300 on hand -- and are about as likely to be thrown to the ground by a bucking horse than to begin the next leg of the race. None of that was enough to deter 70-year-old Robert Long of Idaho, who was declared the winner on Aug. 15. “It was a rush. It was good, good,” said Long -- affectionately known as “Cowboy Bob” -- shortly after finishing the final leg. The derby itself, organized by British-based exploration and extreme sporting group the Adventurists, is an annual race that's meant to recreate Mongolia’s legendary “Yam” system, which Genghis Khan set up n the early 1200s as one of the first long-distance postal transmission systems. 16

Handicapped Reinings Are they in the Future?

Handicaps are based on the rider’s ability, and the quality of horses they have, and those numbers rise and fall annually, or more often.

The best way to increase the interest, participation and money for showing reining horses is to create a handicapping system, just like that used in team roping. Years ago, the big-players in roping changed the game when they transformed into a handicapped format for team roping. The resulting huge growth generated capital, and earnings, which attracted corporate interest. The original players then cashed out when the USTRC and the World Championships of Team Roping sold to AIM, the new publishers of the NRHA Reiner. AIM brought in world-class management and team roping surged ahead. See, back in the day, a roping would be getting ready to start and suddenly World-Champions, like Jake Barnes, would roll-in and simply win it all. Over-time, this undermined the game because the toughs scared off too many amateur ropers. It became a real problem and event promoters didn’t like it because ropers started to hold back entering waiting to see who showed up, and if the toughs rolled in, often late, they simply left. The vast majority of ropers who really ended up paying the bills didn’t like it, and the business of roping had stalled. Then, suddenly, roping changed to handicapping and the sport exploded as everyone signed up, paid their dues, got their handicap, and a monthly subscription to the Super Looper. The Super Looper, as the association magazine surged in advertising, page size and distribution becoming a must-read for ropers. The result was a real boom, unbelievable growth on what the ropers knew was a level playing field. Handicapping in roping has been a break-out moment for women. Before handicaping, a wife rode in the truck now she rides as a header, or healer. An older couple from Arizona won $250,000 last year at a roping in Laughlin. Women are surging in the roping arena, just ask anyone who knows what is really going on and they’ll tell you that woman are hot in the roping pen. 30

When “Average Joes” stated winning and breaking the jackpot bank from the higher number of entries, roping exploded. Once everyone knew they had a fair chance the game was on and roping blew up and soared by all other western disciplines to attract real corporate investment.

The obvious question is why would, primarily, a consumer magazine company buy the USTRC. The answer could be that millions of people are retiring and the number of those who are pre-disposed to have an interest in roping, and horse sports, is off the chart. It is a subscription based business, and it is a legal form of gambling with jackpots. The growth will be phenomoninal for years to come. The future of reining points toward a similar outcome. It’s jackpot driven, it some ways easier to teach and perform than roping, and it does not require cattle, Growth potential is huge and it has yet to be handicapped. That is an attractive market. Imagine that nothing changes in an existing show, yet like a Calcutta, a handicapping value is overlaid on an existing class, or two classes to create an 8 Reining. One of the two classes is entered by the 2 Reiner and the other is a 6 Reiner showing in the same, or a different level class. The score of each rider in their class, or classes is added to create their handicap score. For example, 2 Reiner earned a 190, and the 6 Reiner scored 210, so together they have a 400 score in the number 8 Reining. Low rated reinings, or very high rated reinings simply target that exhibitor group. Imagine handicapped classes overlayed on futurity classes where two riders benefited from each other’s outcomes. This builds a better community by creating more mutually beneficial relationships and outcomes. There are so many combinations to play it is almost endless with the promotional opportunities. Both in roping and polo, states or regions have handicappers that define your number. Handicaps are based on the rider’s ability, and the quality of horses they have, and those numbers rise and fall annually, or more often. They aren’t based on winnings, but abilities, and horse power. Surprisingly, most folks want a number below their abilities because that gives them a little edge.

Floating Horses:

The Life of Casey Tibbs

Casey Tibbs was born in 1929 in a meager log cabin 50 miles northwest of Fort Pierre. Against his father’s wishes, Tibbs started riding in rodeos at age fourteen. According to Tibbs’ father, people participating in rodeos were bums and there was no future in it. Because of his love and involvement with rodeo, Tibbs wasn’t allowed to return home and was on his own from that time on.

At 19, Tibbs became the youngest man ever to win the national saddle bronc-riding crown. From 1949 to 1955, he became a nine-time World Champion, winning six PRCA saddle bronc-riding championships, two allaround cowboy championships and one bareback-riding championship. Tibbs’ life was thrust into the limelight. He appeared on the TV show To Tell the Truth and his photo appeared on the cover of LIFE Magazine. In 1958 he took a rodeo troupe to the World’s Fair in Belgium and introduced rodeo to Japanese spectators in 1973, staging 162 performances with his troupe. 34

Though he had the highs and lows often associated with accelerating fame, Tibbs always had time to visit children in the hospital and help with charity work. He lived life to the fullest, often pulling pranks on friends. After his rodeo career, Tibbs wrote, produced, starred and performed stunts in scores of movies. He produced the bestselling video Born to Buck as well as other films. A little-known fact is Tibbs was John Wayne’s right hand technical man when the actor needed advice to produce realistic western films. Tibbs also acted or performed stunts in movies alongside actors such as Henry Fonda, Will Rogers, Jr., Rod McKuen and Steven Ford, son of President Gerald Ford. Tibbs’ dream was to build a museum where all South Dakota rodeo greats could be honored. Though he died in 1990, the Casey Tibbs Rodeo Center in Fort Pierre was eventually completed in 2009. Floating Horses: The Life of Casey Tibbs, a documentary from Justin Koehler, reveals the rags-to-riches story of the rodeo legend. The film features historic footage and interviews with Sandra Tibbs, Charlie Daniels, Steven Ford, and many others.

Arizona Horseman’s Challenge & Expo

The Arizona Horseman’s Challenge & Expo returns to Horseshoe Park & Equestrian Centre in Queen Creek on April 17, 18 and 19, 2020. This marks the 8th year of this exciting, action packed event that gets bigger and better every year. With over 50 clinics, exhibitions and Ride with the Experts opportunities and many

equestrian themed vendors there really is something for everyone. Offering educational opportunities from a wide variety of clinicians from driving to dressage, nutrition to foundation work, the Arizona Horseman’s Challenge & Expo has something for every horse lover.

The cornerstone of the event is the Arizona Horseman’s Challenge, Arizona’s premier colt starting competition. The concept is not new, the execution of it is. In this unique setting, five experienced horse trainers are judged on how they bring their horses along, not just on the final result. Four judges watch the methods and techniques used by the trainers to reach the most solid foundation on

the colts. The action takes place simultaneously in 5 round pens, in one arena, a total of eight hours over 3 days with spectators able to see every second of the action. Mark your calendars, you won’t want to miss a second of this event.

Let’s Keep Scottsdale’s Equestrian Heritage Strong

By Taryl O’Shea

The Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show grew up in Scottsdale. And thanks to WestWorld the event has grown to the point where Scottsdale’s proud equestrian heritage is seen by a nationwide audience. The same is true for countless other events at WestWorld. The revenue and tax dollars generated directly and indirectly from events at WestWorld keep Scottsdale’s economy moving in the right direction. But WestWorld is starting to show its age. It needs some upgrades so it can continue to attract spectacular events and make money for the city. Voting YES on Question 2 will help make that happen. It addresses infrastructure needs all over Scottsdale including WestWorld. The plan includes new arena lights, lights in the parking lot, a modern public address system, renovated restrooms, and upgrades to the barns. It would be a shame if WestWorld and other elements of Scottsdale’s infrastructure were to fall into disrepair. Voting YES will keep that from happening. The total bond package contained in Questions 1, 2, and 3 builds new sports fields, expands services for seniors, and builds and updates police and fire stations. Please keep our equestrian heritage strong and keep Scottsdale moving in the right direction. Vote YES on Questions 1, 2, and 3. Taryl O’Shea is the Director, Arabian Horse Association of Arizona

Located at the beautiful Four Peaks Ranch in Rio Verde Arizona, Steve Ross Reining and Performance Horses is dedicated to preparing horses to meet their perfect human match. “We are fortunate to have a number of long term clients who trust us enough to send us some really nice horses and allow us to determine the best path to market them. Some are top level reiners, some are ranch riding stars and some are just faithful companions.” says Steve. `There is such an incredible demand for a well schooled, low maintenance horse right now and if we do nothing else well, we feel we are uniquely able to match

horses with the riders skill level and budget.`’ They offer full service sale preparation both via private treaty and public auction. Steve is a lifelong horseman who has worn many different hats and experienced a number of different roles in the horse business. From, judging around the world, teaching at one of his popular clinics or sharing his passion for reining horses on the NRHA webcast of the futurity and derby, Steve loves his involvement in the horse business. Boo is a native

of the United Kingdom where she grew up fox hunting, show jumping and three day eventing as well as being a top level judge in her own right. After a relocation to South Africa Boo was heavily involved in working with horses for movies and television. Steve and Boo met when he was conducting clinics hosted by a large reining breeding farm Boo was managing at the time. They both credit their diverse backgrounds with being able to identify a horses best opportunity to succeed.

SHERRI GILKERSON AND HER ENDURING LEGACY

The Sherri Gilkerson Memorial Horse Show & Sherri Gilkerson Memorial Scholarship Fund.

More than just a great horse show or wonderful scholarships, there was a great spirit-led person full of life and love for her fellow man. Sherri Lea Hammond Gilkerson was born in Casper, Wyoming July 20, 1972. From an early age Sherri had an incredible love and connection for horses. Growing up in Lance Creek, Wyoming, she had local and national successes showing her horses, as well as being active in 4-H and rodeo. Sherri was Miss Rodeo 1992 for her county and 2nd runner up in Wyoming in 1993 for Miss Rodeo. Her other loves included church, family, hunting and fishing. While Sherri seemed a natural talent at all she did, she was a very hard worker.

She attended Laramie County Community College, competing on the LCCC rodeo team, and graduating from the Equine Management Program. She followed her passion for horses, and head for business, into the Equine Industry, working for Dr. Joe Armstrong, Armstrong Equine Services in La Mesa, New Mexico and NMSU. She married Marc Gilkerson, her friend and partner in 1994. They then worked for Cheyenne River Quarter Horse, in Hot Springs, South Dakota and others before starting their own training facility, Sherri Gilkerson Cow Horses, in Silt, Colorado. In 2004 they moved to Cave Creek, Arizona to work alongside fellow trainers, Jim Paul Sr, Dema Paul, Jimmie Paul and TJ Good. In the years that followed she had great successes, winning many honors including the 2005 NRCHA Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity Open & Limited Open Bridle on a talented horse named “Norman” (Camiseta Peppy) who was and still is owned by Linda Mars. Sherri was a rising star in the National Reined Cow Horse Association! Sherri’s life was tragically taken too soon in a horse-related accident October 30, 2006 at the tender age of 34. Her passing left a hole not only in the horse show world, but in the hearts of her family and friends. She was a woman of faith and loved by all who had the pleasure to know her. In honor of her memory among her contemporaries in Arizona and California, the AZRCHA and SCRCHA, joined with the newly established Sherri Gilkerson Memorial Scholarship Committee to establish the Sherri Gilkerson Memorial Bridle and Hackamore Spectacular, in 2007. Initially a respected and popular regional event, Sherri will now be honored at the national level with the establishment of the Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity Horse Show, Sherri Gilkerson Scholarship Youth Bridle and Youth Limited, September 8-16, 2019. It is the hope of Sherri’s family and friends that her memory will live on through the enrichment of young lives through education and sport. The Sherri Gilkerson Memorial Academic Scholarships are awarded each July. This year, 2019, the scholarship committee awarded seven academic scholarships to well-deserving NRCHA students, in addition to the scholarships that will be awarded at the 2019 Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity in the Youth Bridle and Youth Limited classes. Sponsored by Tres Osos Performance Horses and Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity. Information regarding the scholarships is available on THE SHERRI GILKERSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND Facebook page. We thank you for your support and interest in the memory of a truly great horsewoman, loved by all who had the good fortune to know her. In her words, she was a wife, daughter and child of God. We invite all to share in her great passion and…. “RIDE LIKE SHERRI” 46

MAYNARD DIXON The Wandering Lunatic

“In those days in Arizona being an artist was something you just had to endure—or be smart enough to explain why. It was incomprehensible that you were just out ‘seeing the country.’ If you were not working for the railroad, considering real estate or scouting for a mining company, what the hell were you? The drawings I made were no excuse and I was regarded as a wandering lunatic.” —Maynard Dixon

Maynard Dixon Rocks! When a mere lad of 16, Maynard Dixon sent some drawings to his hero, Frederic Remington and got this reply: “You draw better at your age than I did at the same age—if you have the ‘sand’ to overcome difficulties you could be an artist in time.” Maynard launched himself into the wilds of Arizona and New Mexico in 1900 and drew everything and everybody. Most people thought he was crazy (see quote, at right).

56

SEPTEMBER 2019

The Cowboy Trail In May of 1901, Maynard and his artist friend, Edward Borein, took off from Oakland on horseback, bound for Montana. Averaging 25 miles a day, they rode through Carson City and Reno, Nevada. From there they headed north into southeastern Oregon. They spent two months on isolated ranches, including the P Ranch, where Dixon made rapid pencil sketches. These gesture drawings are brilliant in their simple lines with dashed off detail done with precision and skill. Roping a Palomino, 1908, gouache and watercolor – COURTESY PRIVATE COLLECTION –

The Muralist

During his career, Maynard Dixon painted between 25 and 30 murals. Two were on steamships that have been lost and several have disappeared through the years. In addition to murals at train stations in Tucson and Los Angeles, Dixon painted two huge murals for the Kit Carson Grill in San Francisco, California. Fortunately for preservationists, the murals were painted on canvas and then glued to the wall. Both murals have been saved and one of them is in the Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West in Scottsdale, Arizona, and the other is at The Booth Museum in Cartersville, Georgia. October 3rd Desert Journey, 1935, 48-x-72-inch oil on canvas – COURTESY AMERICAN MUSEUM OF WESTERN ART, THE ANSCHUTZ COLLECTION, DENVER, COLORADO –

The Fine Artist

Maynard Dixon earned his spurs on several fronts. He did his due diligence, he escaped the ghetto of being labeled an “illustrator” and he showed his skill on a couple dozen monumental murals. But, more importantly, he blew the roof off of Western art and took the genre to a new and modern level that Remington and Russell did not. As Dixon himself put it, “The artist’s job, as I see it, is to try to widen people’s horizons— show them the wonder of the world they live in.” You might make a case that there are better painters, but in the end, Maynard Dixon is the West’s greatest artist. He made the transition to modern art with integrity and authenticity. Oh, and he had sand.

Tanya Tucker Adopts Animal Rescue as Her Platform

By Craig Shelburne

At the end of Tanya Tucker’s music video for “The Wheels of Laredo,” there’s a message of support for Redemption Road Rescue, an organization that cares for neglected horses. During a recent interview, she explained how she discovered the program

60

SEPTEMBER 2019

and where it’s led her. Here’s her story, in her own words: It all started when my stylist was doing my hair: “Oh, Tanya, have you seen this?” She showed me this horse, the grandson of Seattle Slew, and they had starved him. And I go, “Find out where that horse is right now.” It made me angry. Then I thought, “No, anger’s not enough. I gotta do something about it.” So I called the people at Redemption Road Rescue. It happened to be in Jackson, Tennessee, of all places. And the other place that I’ve recently become involved with is Colorado State University of Veterinary Medicine in Fort Collins. I happened to be there visiting friends on the way to California and my dog Kona, my Golden Retriever, would have died, because he had cancer in his heart. But they took him in and saved his life. The number one cardiologist in veterinary medicine was in Fort Collins. A lot of those kind of places are not on the level, and they use animals to make money for themselves. This place is not that way and I was very impressed. I said, “I want to do something to help you guys.” Because they’re all volunteers and the work they do is just unbelievable. So I went to work for them and I’m still going to work for them. And the things that they did and the way they handled it, I’ve never been treated that good in a hospital. They even had the therapist come in and evaluate me — a grief therapist, in case I lost him. And I said, “Man, I’m going to work for them, too.” … This dog is a piece of me. He’s a part of me. And without him I’m not going to be the same. And it’s going to come, it’s going to happen, but I didn’t want it to happen right now. And you never want it to happen. But I said, “I’m going to go to work for these folks.”

WHY RISK IT

CLEAN ARENAS MAKE FOR HEALTHY HORSES HOW IT WORKS

A Service to Improve Your Footing

We’ll pull into your existing arena and allow Rockyln to do her thing…Pick up rocks. With her pristine design, she is able to pick up a variety of rock sizes, as small as 3/8 going up to 6 inches deep of the surface sifting through without removing your footing. Rocklyn employs a sifting technology used to lift the existing footing from your arena on to a special/secret screen. The screen then sifts the unwanted rock from the arena, while the footing returns to the arena, and the remaining debris is deposited in the bucket. We’ll gather the rock and neatly pile it up for easy removal. She’s built of steel to ensure durability and consistency.

Coming in for a Landing

June Liston,

a Captain for United Airlines, pilots Boeing 777’s and American Quarter Horses. By Abigail Boatwright June Liston traded riding horses to pursue a pilot’s license when she was 17. Today, she’s a captain aboard United Airline’s largest plane, the Boeing 777. When she’s not flying around the world to places like Hong Kong and Tel Aviv, the Scottsdale, Arizona, resident is back in the saddle, riding one of her two American Quarter Horses. And this week, June’s competing at the 2019 Adequan® Select World Championship Show in Fort Worth, Texas. June says 3% of all airline pilots are female – and she says that number is gradually increasing. But of that 3%, only about 0.5% are captains like June. She didn’t start out as a captain on the big planes – she worked up to it over the years. “There are a lot of other jobs that we do – you’re a meteorologist, you’re working with load planning, you’re a manager, too,” June says. “My flights usually have a crew of 19 with flight attendants and pilots. It’s more than just flying the airplane. You have to manage a lot of people and keep everyone working together.” Now in her 31st year with United, June primarily flies to Asia, Europe and the South Pacific. Her favorite location? Taipei. Favorite airport? The one in St. Maarten, because she gets to land right beside the ocean. She most enjoys going to faraway places, and working with great people. The best part of flying, in June’s opinion, is landing the planes. “I love landing, because that’s where you get to show what you can do,” June says. “It’s the fun part, where you get to finesse it a little bit.”

TEVIS CUP - An 18-year-old Woman Won the 100-mile endurance race with a free horse from Craigslist

By Ryan Prior, CNN

After 16 hours pushing through the world's most rigorous endurance horse race, 18-year-old Sanoma Blakeley and her horse Goober were sprinting all-out under a black sky in California's Gold Rush country.

Neck and neck with them was a three-time winner of the race, Jeremy Reynolds. Blakeley, meanwhile, was striding atop a horse her family found for free on Craigslist.

"He passed me a couple of times in the last four miles," Blakely told CNN. "We were running our horses as fast as they were willing to go." In the end, Blakeley finished about a horse length in front of her competitor. After galloping out at 5:15 a.m. near Truckee, California, she and Goober had endured three canyons, multiple river crossings and epic elevation changes while traversing 100 miles on the Western States Trail. One hundred eighty-four horses began this year's Tevis Cup. The race standings show 98 horses crossing the finish line. Riding between points near Truckee to finish near Auburn, California, they were competing in the 64th annual running of the Tevis Cup on August 17. It bills itself as the world's most difficult equestrian endurance ride. 'You get out what you put in,' Blakeley says Eight years ago, Blakeley's father Wasch answered a Craigslist ad offering the horse up for free. "He didn't know the guy," Blakeley said. But it wasn't the only time they've found horses that way. "We've gotten a few good horses on Craigslist." The family owns Blakeley Endurance Stables, where Goober is one of seven horses under their care. The horse may not have come from strong racing stock, but Blakeley does. Her mother has completed six Tevis Cups and her father has finished five of the races. Bakeley began racing horses in the American Endurance Ride Conference when she was just 6 years old. She first attempted the Tevis Cup as a 12-year-old in 2014, and then again in 2016. Both times she didn't finish. The race has numerous veterinary stops throughout the course, where vets perform metabolic tests on the horses, and require a horse's pulse rate to fall to a certain level before the horse and rider can press on. She said in her past attempts, her horse didn't pass muster at vet stops marking the 55th and 68th miles, respectively. One difference this year: her horse. "He was feeling really strong the whole day," she said. And when Goober's pulse rate fell to a normal resting rate faster than other horses, Blakeley could get a head start out of the vet stops. Winning the race was a product of a lifetime of hard work for the young woman who hails from Terrebonne, Oregon. "It was just a lot of time conditioning," Blakeley said. "You get out what you put in."

The 10-year-old Goober has been in Blakeley's family for eight years.

Goober isn't the only horse her family has found on Craigslist, Sanoma Blakeley says.

PENDLETON ROUND-UP SEPT. 7 - 14th

The Pendleton Round-Up is excited to announce the selection of cowgirl artist Donna Howell-Sickles as its 2019 rodeo poster artist. Howell-Sickles is an award winning artist from Saint Jo, Texas known for her colorful, energetic and joyful depictions of the American cowgirl. Donna’s work is included in prestigious museum and prominent private collections. Her art is carried by galleries across the west. A book, Cowgirl Rising, celebrates her works.Donna was selected as a member of the Cowgirl Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, Texas, in recognition for her powerful portrayals of historic and contemporary cowgirls.

Donna attributes her love of the cowgirl and western imagery to a vintage postcard of a cowgirl on a horse captioned, “Greetings from a Real Cowgirl from the ole Southwest”.Inspired by the charm and confidence of the woman in the image, Donna has made the iconic cowgirl–and all that she stands for– the central theme in her contemporary Western settings of mixed-media artwork.

“Employing a bold palette of vibrant colors and dynamic visual movement, Donna is a perfect fit to capture the color and drama of the Pendleton Round-Up.There is no better embodiment of the confident, exuberant, fearless and playful spirit of Donna’s cowgirls than the members of the Pendleton Round-Up Court celebrated in the poster.Paired with the iconic colors of the Round-Up’s bucking chutes and the historic TiPi Village, Donna has created a masterful poster”, observed Round-Up Publicity Director Pat Reay. “The historic Pendleton Round-Up is rich with iconic images, so choosing just one for a poster was a challenge.Portraying a Round-Up queen in a posture of welcome and celebration atop one of the red bucking chute gates of the arena, surrounded by the triangles of the Tipi Village seemed to be a good solution. The red roses around her hat underscore the beauty of the entire event. I look forward the attending the Round-Up again in September. ”, commented Donna The posters will be available for purchase on the 25th of March, according to Pendleton Round-Up Retail Manager Nicole Herranen. In addition to the basic poster, special limited editions will be available as well.Nicole invites anyone interested in the poster, and related products bearing the image, to call the Round-Up store at (541) 276-2553 or visit the Round-Up web site at pendletonroundup.com/shop.Nicole also reminds Round-Up fans that Donna will be on hand during the RoundUp this September 11 – 14 to sign the poster and help celebrate the 109th edition of the Round-Up 66

AQHA Partners with Western Dressage Association of America

The American Quarter Horse Association is proud to announce its partnership with the Western Dressage Association of America. This alliance was formed as a result from the approval of western dressage as a new class starting at AQHA events in 2020.

WDAA was established in 2011 with the mission of building an equine community that combines the western traditions of horse and rider with classical dressage. With more than 1,500 members, WDAA is recognized as the sole affiliate representing the discipline of western dressage through the United States Equestrian Federation. Throughout the 2020 show

season, exhibitors will have the opportunity to participate in dualapproved classes at WDAA events, in addition to special events hosted by AQHA. AQHA is working to promote joint education efforts for AQHA judges to obtain approval through WDAA and for WDAA judges to have the opportunity to obtain an AQHA-approved specialized-judge certification. WDAA, in partnership with

AQHA, intends to serve western dressage enthusiasts through: Honoring the horse. Valuing the partnership between horse and rider. Celebrating the legacy of the American West. The inclusion of western dressage at AQHA events allows event placings and money earned available to AQHA for inclusion on horses’ achievement records, which also will be available through AQHA’s QData reports.

Jim Bound and Bound To Be Dun broke the record for number of Select world championships by exhibitor. Jim Bound knew this Adequan® Select World Championship Show could be one for the books. Just two gold trophies short of tying the record for exhibitor with the most Select world championships, Jim brought two horses to compete in four events. He is also only the second exhibitor in the history of the 17-year show to have won the all-around title three years in a row. So, he had his sights set on breaking a couple of records. His chances were good, but one never knows. “I wanted to keep going until I tied the record (for most world championships by exhibitor),” Jim says.

Unapproved compounded drugs linked to equine deaths

The FDA is warning veterinarians and horse owners that one lot of compounded combination drug product containing pyrimethamine and toltrazuril has been associated with adverse events in at least three horses, two in Maine and one in Ohio, according to a release. Testing completed by the agency found that this lot of the product contained approximately 18 to 21 times the pyrimethamine indicated on the label. High doses of this medication can cause clinical signs such as seizures, fever and death, the release notes. Rapid Equine Solutions of Aston, Pennsylvania, compounded the product, which was labeled as containing toltrazuril 416 mg/ml and pyrimethamine 17 mg/ml, and packaged in 60 ml oral paste syringes for the treatment of the neurologic disease Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM). The products from the lot have been accounted for and are no longer in distribution. The company learned of the adverse events in late May and initiated a recall to consumers the same day. The FDA is working with company and state agencies to investigate the adverse events, the release states. According to the release, an incident linked to a different compounder also involved erroneously formulated compounded pyrimethamine/ toltrazuril products that led to four equine deaths in 2014. It notes that compounded products are not FDA-approved animal drugs and that toltrazuril is not approved for use in horses.

There are several drugs that are FDA-approved for the treatment of EPM, according to the FDA, and the agency encourages horse owners to consult their veterinarian for treatment advice. The agency asks veterinarians, horse owners and caretakers to report adverse events in horses being treated with compounded pyrimethamine-containing products.

Temecula-area Equestrian Group has fought 50 years for trails The Rancho California Horsemen's Association has worked to build and keep horse trails since 1969 Deep in the hills of Temecula Valley Wine Country’s Valle de los Caballos, overlooking a coffee-colored mountainside peppered with houses, are trails that Pat Ommert knows very well. In conversation, she mentioned these horse paths as she would old friends, with cordial familiarity and a loyalty fitting for a great-grandchild. She has plenty of those, too. Ommert celebrated her 90th birthday at a dusty ranch Saturday, Aug. 10. The National Cowgirl Hall of Fame inductee also was honored for a different reason: the Rancho California Horsemen’s Association — which she helped found in 1969 — is turning 50. “It’s hard for me to believe that it’s been 50 years,” she said. Since it started in 1969, the association has worked to preserve and grow the vast network of horse trails in the Temecula Valley. The group helped Riverside County map the paths, which date to the days before Temecula became a city, and have lobbied to prevent development that could get in the way of their beloved trails. Their rides were their meetings. “We wanted to keep it a horse country,” she said. “We’d all come here because of the horses.” It’s been hard work, she said, but the benefits are staggering. The area is now a hot spot for horse riding and raising, and has been for over half a century. In fact, said the group’s former president Gil Pankonin, his organization has pushed for hitching posts at several wineries in the area. Instead of driving, guests can now park their horses outside tasting rooms and enjoy the scenic trails without fear of a car collision. “That’s been the whole objective,” said Pankonin, who is 73. “To make sure that the riders that do ride have a safe passage.” Other safety measures for which the association has lobbied include “horse crossing” signs on major thoroughfares in Wine Country and fenced-off trails around large properties. But in an area where tractors commonly share the road with luxury sports cars, Ommert said there’s still more work to do — especially if they intend for “horse country” to stay that way for another 50 years and beyond. “We’re adamant horse people and trail riders, and we want to keep that space,” she said. 76

AAEP Publishes Equine

Infectious Anemia Guidelines

Comprehensive guidelines providing the most current information on diagnostics, transmission, risk factors, control and biosecurity strategies for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) have been published online by the American Association of Equine Practitioners.

80

SEPTEMBER 2019

EIA is a viral disease with no cure and no vaccine for prevention. Horses confirmed positive can be quarantined for the remainder of their lives but are usually euthanized. According to USDA APHIS Veterinary Services, 1,187,536 EIA tests were conducted in the U.S. in 2018, resulting in detection of 51 positive horses. The AAEP’s EIA Guidelines place special emphasis on recent changes in the epidemiology of the disease in the U.S. According to guidelines’ co-author Angela Pelzel-McCluskey, DVM, MS, national equine epidemiologist for USDA APHIS Veterinary Services, a new high-risk group has emerged in the past five years in which the primary method of disease spread is iatrogenic transmission—most commonly through needle, syringe and IV set reuse and possibly through blood contamination of multi-dose drug vials and use of illegal blood and serum products from other countries. “While our cases of EIA in the U.S. used to be found primarily in untested or under-tested populations with disease spread by biting flies, the majority of EIA cases are now being found in Quarter Horse racehorses with ties to unsanctioned racing,” said Dr. Pelzel-McCluskey. “Investigation of these cases has shown that unhygienic practices by the owners and trainers of these horses is spreading the disease by iatrogenic means.” Dr. Pelzel-McCluskey advises equine practitioners to be aware of the potential for EIA transmission in this population and to provide educational outreach to their clients on testing high-risk horses and implementing appropriate biosecurity practices to prevent disease spread. The EIA Guidelines, available as a PDF file, were co-authored for the AAEP’s Infectious Disease Committee by Drs. PelzelMcCluskey and Katie Flynn, equine staff veterinarian at the California Department of Food and Agriculture.

QUICK TIP: Must-Haves for Your Equine First-aid Kit

By Jeff Hall, DVM, Senior Equine Technical Services Veterinarian, Zoetis

It’s the perfect day for a ride. But, while unloading your horse, he quickly steps back, lifting his head high to catch on the bare metal of your horse trailer. The gash is deep. What are your next steps? Make sure you know the best

plan of action to help minimize your horse’s risk in times of emergency. Injuries such as cuts and bruises are common with a horse’s natural curiosity and flight-or-fight response. Other types of emergencies can include colic, choke, lameness and illness. Considering such potential threats posed to your horse, your knowledge of, and

access to, a first-aid kit will be crucial to help ensure his overall safety when away from immediate veterinary service. I recommend keeping a first-aid kit in not only your barn but also your horse trailer, should you ever need quick access to supplies when traveling with your horse. Listed below are key materials to keep stocked in your kit:

Check our our line of handmade Vaquero goods. Including riatas, get down ropes, hobbles and bosalitas.

· Thermometer · One roll of cotton, gauze pads, brown gauze · Nonstick pads · Adhesive wrap · Diaper · Leg wraps · White tape · Duct tape · Latex gloves · Eye saline solution · Scissors · Triple antibiotic ointment · Stethoscope · Hoof pick · Cold pack · Antimicrobial wound cleanser · Small flashlight with spare batteries · Sharp knife · Tweezers and hemostat · Dormosedan Gel® (detomidine hydrochloride) If your horse becomes injured and fractious, or simply won’t cooperate, administering Dormosedan Gel, a mild sedative available with a prescription from your veterinarian, can help restore calm and help prevent further injury. It’s an easy-to-use option for needle-shy horses and horse owners who are uncomfortable giving an injection. Dormosedan Gel is administered by horse owners from a single-dose syringe underneath the horse’s tongue. Having tubes of the mild sedative on hand allows stressful or emergency situations — such as treating an injury, bandage changes, hoof trimming or shoeing, and minor nonpainful procedures — to be less strenuous for the horse and horse owner. Dormosedan Gel is a valued addition to equine first-aid kits. I encourage you to work with the veterinarian on your team for additional guidance on emergency care and first aid. Werth takes back-to-back Grand Prix Special Gold

By Louise Parkes

In a mighty battle between two of the sport’s true greats, Isabell Werth, the lady recognised as the reigning Queen of international Dressage, won through once again in the Grand Prix Special at the Longines FEI Dressage European Championships 2019 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands tonight.

Two years ago in Gothenburg, Sweden, Werth pinned team-mate Sonke Rothenberger into silver medal spot, and this time around it was her other German compatriot, Dorothee Schneider, who had to settle for second place. But Schneider chased her right to the line with a brilliant performance from Showtime this evening, and was overwhelmed with emotion afterwards. “This is the greatest day of my life, my first individual medal!” said the double-Olympian. “I had one mistake in the flying changes because I lost a stirrup - I have to talk to my trainer about doing some lunging again! I’ve been riding this horse for 10 years now and he is so amazing. I’m really proud to be sitting in second place tonight behind Isabell!” she said. She established the lead with just five left to go on a mark of 85.456 but Werth overtook her with another of her show-stopping rides on the mare she most adores, posting the winning score of 86.520. "I know that with Bella Rose everything is possible and it is up to me to make it happen. The piaffe/passage could not be better than it was tonight, the feeling was outstanding and the atmosphere was really special!" Isabell Werth (GER)

Germany’s Isabell Werth won tonight’s thrilling Grand Prix Special at the Longines FEI Dressage European Championship 2019 in Rotterdam, The Netherands. (FEI/Liz Bronze went to Cathrine Dufour and Atterupgaards Cassidy, the pair who really put themselves onto centre stage when also third in the Grand Prix Special and Freestyle at the 2017 Europeans. They posted 81.337 just before Schneider came into the ring but, typically modest, the Danish rider didn’t think that was good enough for a podium placing and headed back to the stables with her little chestnut gelding only to get the call-up to return to the arena. And that took a bit of reorganisation.

PassivDom Homes for Horselovers “PassivDom is the world’s first mobile and transportable house with Passive House parameters,” said Max Gerbut, the company’s founder, in an interview with TechCrunch. “Due to the use of advanced materials and unique developments by our engineers, PassivDom has the highest thermal performance among residential buildings. The walls of PassivDom are as warm as brick. Thermal characteristics are high enough. to use 20 times less energy than an ordinary building. With a PassivDom house, residents are able to manage all systems from their smartphones. And all those systems are powered by the sun. With no electricity or gas to speak of, this may be the among the most environmentally friendly houses you’ve seen. And because it’s so one with nature, it also claims to be totally autonomous. “PassivDom allows living in the mountains, in the forest, on the seashore in conditions as comfortable as a 5-star hotel,” the company state on its website. And you can live in all those locations because the PassivDom is really a house on wheels. You can travel just about anywhere you’d like and rest assured that you can rest your head on your pillow in the PassivDom when you’re done exploring for the day. But convenience doesn’t mean discomfort. PassivDom promises “maximum comfort conditions” thanks to its self-learning system that keeps temperature and humidity levels in check by monitoring your oxygen and carbon dioxide content. And this smart house is truly ready for move-in right out of the box, as it comes with furniture, household appliances, pillows, and yes, wine glasses. A cloud-based video surveillance and alarm system promises to keep your home safe, and a self-sufficient power system, independent water supply, and independent sewage will allow you to take the home wherever you need to go. Nate Tip of the Month

Cooling System Failure Prevention Tip

Living in Arizona we all know how important a functional cooling system is for your vehicle, so we're going to cover how to keep it that way and prevent failures within the system. The owner's manual for your vehicle is a great source of information but some are lacking in the maintenance category, especially regarding coolant. It's not unusual to see coolant recommended to be changed at 100k-150k miles. In our opinion that's severely over-due and recommend having the system flushed every 30k-50k miles depending on how it tests. In the early stages of coolant break down the coolant may appear discolored, cloudy, or just plain dirty. If you see these signs, then it's time to give us a call. Ideally the system should be serviced before you see these symptoms exist. As it worsens a chemical reaction occurs affecting

Truck Talk with Nate Brekken components internally. At that point if you see signs of rust in the radiator, reservoir or cap then you may have waited too long. Rust can spread throughout like wildfire, so if it's visible at these

access points there's a good chance it can be found in the hoses, heater core, engine block, cylinder Nate Brekken heads, oil cooler, basically everywhere. We've seen some that have been neglected for

long enough that we cannot use a flush to clean the system and requires replacement of expensive components. As the chemicals in the coolant are lost it cannot protect the metal surfaces allowing it to eat away metal anywhere it flows through which can also be damaging to seals and both causing leaks at some point.

So how do we prevent these issues? Our cooling system flush method begins by running a cleaner through the system to break up rust, scale, corrosion, and other deposits from the system. We then use our flush machine to reverse flow the coolant to exchange the old coolant with new coolant using the specified type for each engine. Keeping up on this single maintenance will help prevent costly repairs and vehicle downtime. If you have any questions about your cooling system or would like to schedule in for service give us a call! 623.582.4404 90
