Karen and Jim also and worked closely with area 4-H Clubs and other nonprofits to organize and sponsor community fundraisers at the Ranch.

Prior to becoming a local business owner, Karen gained four years of experience in the legal field and ten in the airport/ airline industry; she later obtained her license as an Arizona Realtor. She is a licensed contractor with the Arizona Registrar of Contractors; past president of Yavapai County Contractors Association; and past president, Prescott Chapter, of the National Association of Women in Construction.

Her dedication to community led Karen to serve on numerous committees and boards, representing Central Arizona, as well as, the Town of Chino Valley, where she was Mayor for six years.

By Wyatt Bechtel An amendment added to the Senate’s “minibus” spending bill would grant livestock haulers another year-long extension to implement Electronic Logging Devices (ELD).

The amendment was proposed

by Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) to delay implementation of the ELD mandate until Sept. 30, 2019. Fischer says the legislation is important because livestock haulers face different challenges from other transporters who are currently using an ELD under regulations from the Department of Transportation.

“With this extension, we will have more time to bring commonsense to these rules and provide additional flexibility,” Fischer says.

There is currently an extension in place for ELD implementation that expires at the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30, 2018, that was authorized through an omnibus spending bill signed by President Trump in March.

Senate Passes One-Year ELD Extension for Livestock Haulers

Livestock haulers could get another year-long extension to implement Electronic Logging Devices (ELD) through an amendment to the Senate's spending bill. ( Wyatt Bechtel ) will give regulators from Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) time to work with livestock transporters and producers to find a resolution to the hours of service (HOS) mandate that is reinforced through the ELD.

Livestock groups like the U.S. Cattlemen’s Association (USCA)

were thankful to Senator Fischer for moving the legislation forward. USCA Transportation Committee Chairman Steve Hilker says the HOS rules as currently written do not offer enough flexibility for hauling live animals.

“This one-year delay is needed because we still have not received the flexibility we have asked for from the Department of Transportation's FMCSA. We have the solution already

drafted and introduced in Congress,” Hilker says.

The solution he refers to is the Transporting Livestock Across America Safely Act (TLAASA) proposed by Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.), a bill that would extend HOS for livestock haulers.

“We need the one-year delay to secure the final passage of this bill,” says Hilker, owner of Steve Hilker Trucking Inc., in Cimarron, Kan. The minibus appropriations bill that the amendment was within passed with a vote of 92-6 on August 1.

By Ana Nita With a total budget of $4.5 million, the Lakeside Equestrian Park received the green light for the groundbreaking ceremony and the bidding for construction.

The County partnered up with the East County Equestrian Foundation, a local non-profit group tasked with raising $150,000 to cover the cost of management and maintenance for the equestrian facility after construction.

Last month, the County directed an additional $10,000 grant toward the foundation “to support the hosting of events to raise funds to operate a

future equestrian park in Lakeside,” as stated in the Second District allocations for the Community Enhancement Funds submitted by County Supervisor Dianne Jacob.

The equestrian park will be built on a 14-acre spit of land on Moreno Avenue in Lakeside and will be designed to host rodeo events for juniors and seniors, barrel racing, cattle events, gymkhanas, horse shows, clinics and trail events.

The layout includes a covered arena and renting spaces for public

events to serve the equine community in the entire Southern California.

The East County Equestrian Foundation raised $59,842 so far from private and public donations, sponsors, memberships, and fundraising events. The foundation has a GoFundMe page and is also part of the Amazon Smile project that redirects a percentage of the sale toward non-profit organizations.

to treasurer Cheryl Erpelding, the new board will “continue to work toward raising funds and awareness.”

Erpelding was brought on board by Barnard to help with marketing and fundraising.

Julie Murphy stepped down as the Vice President to have more time to “work with Parks and Recreation on the design of the equestrian park, as the county has never built an equestrian facility before.” Both Erpelding and Murphy agreed that the foundation needs more volunteers, more people to sign up for the membership or to donate and also more board members.

“Our short-term goal is to see the park built,” said Murphy. “Donations will buy items needed, a tractor, a water truck and implements to keep the ground safe and clean.”

She pointed out that “our long term is to manage the park on a day to day basis with all types of possibilities for rental.

Murphy joined the foundation at its inception six years ago.

“My motivation is our youth,” she said. “We need to make sure they have an equestrian facility that will remain in perpetuity.”

The foundation is busy organizing monthly fundraising events either on its own or by partnering up with other local businesses. The volunteers with the board raised $1,242 at the recent Bulls Only rodeo show in Lakeside.

Erpelding is encouraging people to stop for dinner on July 20 at Boll Weevil in Lakeside where 20 percent of the restaurant bill will go to the foundation.

A similar event is planned for Aug. 14 at Raising Cane’s restaurant in Santee, while on Aug. 25, everybody is invited to the Wilbur Moore Trail Challenge at the Lakeside Polo Grounds.

Before that, though, there is the Pine Valley Days event the foundation is planning to attend. Coming this fall, everybody is looking forward to the members BBQ at Lone Oak Ranch in Lakeside.

The equestrian park is a dream come true for Lakeside, a well-known equestrian and farming community.

“I am excited for Lakeside businesses and the money this park will bring to our town,” said Murphy.

Gilbert Days Rodeo Royalty has a platform called Kicking Up Kindness. This platform inspires us to be on the look out for kind deeds big and small.

For over 20 years Gilbert Rodeo Royalty has been inspired being on the look out for good deeds.

Although not everbody notices it, acts of kindness happen everyday, all around us! Kindness does not always come in the form of huge planned service projects, yet it can make all the difference to someone in need.

In fact, kindness can be just noticing a need of someone around you, and responding to it without selfish intent or desires.

My Mom recently told me a story about a small act of kindness that she witnessed at the shop where she works. Everyday, she and her manager watched as a homeless man wandered around town, and then up to the front porch of the shop in search of food.

He dug through the trash cans looking for old take-out bags, or even chip bags with crumbs left over in them.

Though he was in need of food aned nourishment, the man never asked for food or for anyone to help him. That is where the selfless act of kindness came in.

One day, the manager was eating lunch by the window, and saw the man walking in the direction of the shop in his usual route. The manager immediately knew what she was 40

going to do. She quickly wrapped up the food she had been eating, (even though there was a considerable amount of the meal left) and ran outside to the trash can that he usually scavenged for food in. She carefully placed the bundle of food on top of the can, then ran inside, hoping not to be noticed. My Mom watched from the window as the man came up to the trash can and saw the very carefully bundled meal that had been left for him to discover. He looked around to see if anybody was nearby, and noticed my Mom in the window.

With grattitude in his eyes and a smile on his face, he waved a simple, yet unmistakeable thank you. He took the food and walked on, his empty stomach filled for the day.

Seeing how easy it was to lighten the burden of this man who was less fortunate than herself, the kindhearted manager regularly began to save a portion of her lunches for him to discover. This gesture was little and seemingly insignificant to the manager, but anybody in a similar situation to that of the hungry homeless man knows it can have the ability to impact their lives. Everyday, all around us, there are opportunities to serve others. It is up to us to kick up some kindness by seeing the problems and meeting the needs of the people around us.2018 Gilbert Days Rodeo will be held November 16th17th - 18th at Welcome Home Ranch in Gilbert, AZ. Dear Friends: I am running for re-election to the Scottsdale City Council because Scottsdale citizens need a strong representative voice on the Council focused on their behalf, and I believe my record during my first term proves I am that voice.

There is no better example of my commitment to protect Scottsdale's quality of life and the taxpayers' pocketbook than my steadfast opposition to the Desert Discovery Center/Desert EDGE, especially without a vote of the citizens who will foot the bill. For one thing, it is a commercial enterprise which breaks the promises made when voters in all parts of our city were asked to tax themselves almost a billion dollars to purchase the land for the Preserve. It is also a financial disaster - building it would drain a whopping 62 million taxpayer dollars from our Preserve and Bed Tax funds, diverting those dollars from more worthy projects. And the annual operating deficit would have to be covered from the city's General Fund, which means either a tax increase to cover it, or less money for public safety, streets, parks and other important municipal needs.

Because of this I stand with the citizens for a Charter Amendment (Proposition 420) requiring a public vote before any commercial development can be built inside our Preserve. In fact, I am the only Councilmember who has voted 100% not to proceed with the DDC/Desert EDGE project without the approval of the voters.

Because I am a fiscal conservative I have fought to keep our taxes – especially property taxes - low, which is why I opposed the $350M all-ornothing bond proposal this spring.

I support tourism and I will continue to work to attract new businesses and events to Scottsdale. I support WestWorld and the Tony Nelssen Equestrian Center. I also support the galleries, restaurants and shops in our Downtown that contribute to our economy and to Scottsdale’s unique reputation for arts and culture.

I support public safety. Residents deserve a safe and secure environment in which to live, work and raise their families. Keeping you safe will continue to be my #1 priority, which is why Police and Firefighters have endorsed me for re-election.

“I am very excited about NRS going to Wickenburg,” said David Isham, NRS Owner/CEO. “From a local perspective, it's a fantastic

Wins 2018 Haggin Cup at Tevis

MM Cody, a 10-year-old chestnut Mustang gelding, and his rider Mykayla Corgnell received the 2018 Haggin Cup at the Tevis Cup awards banquet, held July 29 in Auburn, California. He is the first Mustang to earn the coveted title.

The annual award is presented to the horse deemed in superior condition after completing the 100-mile journey over the Western State Trail from near Lake Tahoe to Auburn. The award also takes horsemanship into consideration.

“Cody was in incredible shape,” said Tevis head veterinarian Mike Peralez, DVM. “He was head and shoulders above the competition.”

Only the first 10 horses to cross the finish line are eligible to be considered for the award. Cody and Corgnell finished eighth, two hours and 22 minutes behind the winners, Heather Reynolds and endurance-racing-bred Arabian Cayucos.

Cody’s owner, Mark Montgomery, also completed the ride on his 11-year-old Mustang MM Woodrow in ninth place.

Montgomery has been adopting, training, and finding homes for Mustangs for 20 years.

“I choose Mustangs because they are the toughest, most durable horses out there,” Montgomery said.

Since Corgnell was attempting her first Tevis Cup, Montgomery felt Cody was the right mount for the 21-year-old. “Cody is so easy to ride and takes care of his rider, while Woody is a more challenging ride,” he said.

Montgomery and Corgnell condition the Mustangs from his home in Penn Valley, California.

Of the 149 horses that started, only 64 finished within 24 hours and passed the final veterinary examination. The 43% completion rate was one of the lowest in ride history. Peralez believes heat, humidity, and smoke from the Carr Fire, burning in the Redding, California, area were factors for both horses and riders.

Of the horses that did not complete, 27 were pulled for lameness; 22 for metabolic issues such as dehydration, elevated heart rates, or diminished gut sounds; and 19 due to “rider option,” which could indicate a rider not feeling fit to continue or that they felt their horse wasn’t fit to continue.”

When Claire Godwin, DVM, of Laytonsville, Maryland, responded to an ad in a local horse magazine offering an Arabian for sale some years ago, she thought she was buying a 4-H pony for her kids. She had no idea that the 14-hand gray gelding would eventually carry her and more than a dozen other riders down some of the toughest endurance trails in the U.S. On Saturday, Godwin and that gelding PL Mercury, now 27.5-yearold, crossed the finish line at the 100-mile Tevis Cup, held annually in California. With this completion, “Merc” broke his own record as the oldest equine Tevis Cup finisher.

What’s more, the pair finished just outside the Top 10 in 13th place from a field of 149 starters, of which only 64 completed. Their ride time of 17 hours, 18 minutes was just two hours, 33 minutes behind the winners, Heather Reynolds and the 10-year-old Arabian gelding Cayucos.

This year Godwin and Merc lopped four hours and 19 minutes off their 2017 ride time. Even factoring in the considerable crewing skill of twotime Tevis winner John Crandall, it’s hard to argue that age is slowing Merc down.

So how does Godwin keep Merc performing at such an elite level with so many years under his belt?

She gives a lot of the credit to Merc himself.

“He doesn’t have perfect conformation; no horse does,” she says. “But he does have a short back, really good bone, and size 1 feet.

“He is relaxed and not a real dependent horse, although he does really like his pasturemate, Ahmose,” she adds.

It’s the dependability, athleticism, and attitude that’s led Merc to partner with 14 different riders throughout his American Endurance Conference career, many of them beginning junior riders.

Godwin also believes that plenty of old-fashioned rest has helped Merc progress so successfully throughout his long career.

“I like Merc to have two to three months off in the winter,” she says.

“Merc’s emotional wellbeing is just as important as physical care. My horses run out in the pasture 24/7.”

Godwin prepares Merc for competitions carefully, often ponying him to covering miles and improve his condition while keeping weight off his strong, but aging, back.

She also believes Merc shouldn’t necessarily race on every endurance ride: “Pick and choose the rides you want to go fast,” she cautions.

Day to day, Godwin feeds Merc a joint supplement with his lowcarb commercial feed. She says use uses Adequan about 48 hours before competing in 50- or 100-mile events and as needed between competitions.

Arizona Horseman’s Challenge Expo

The 2018 Arizona Horseman’s Challenge & Expo will return to Horseshoe Park & Equestrian Centre in

Queen Creek April 19 th , 20 th and 21 st 2019. This will be the 7 th year for this event, and each year it grows bigger and better. There are over 30 clinics, exhibitions, and Ride with the Expert opportunities hosted at this event. The cornerstone is the Arizona Horseman’s

Challenge, Arizona’s premier colt starting competition. It puts five experienced horse trainers vying against each other to see who can train their colt to the best of their and their colts ability in the time given.

Jody Swink of No Sweat Natural Horsemanship is the

creator of this format for the colt starting competition. The concept is not new, the execution of it is.

In most colt starting competitions, the one who gets their horse the farthest is the winner, period. In the AZHC there are four judges watching five trainers work with untrained mustangs in eight hours over three days.

They watch how they interact, how they bring the horse along, and what different training tools they use to overcome challenges that the horses present. In this unique setting, the trainers are judged on how they bring the horses along, not only the end result. This format also makes a fun spectator event. The horses are picked by the trainer’s using a white elephant style, picking numbers out of a hat and they are allowed to steal each other’s horse.

The seating puts the spectators up close and personal, watching all five trainers working with their colts simultaneously.

And, like Godwin recommends for any horse over 17, Merc has at least twice-annual veterinary appointments for appropriate vaccinations, deworming and routine care.

Looking back, Godwin recalls that she thought Merc might be done with competitions a few years ago. An ultrasound during a veterinary appointment revealed what veterinarians suspected was an intestinal tumor. So Merc joined his friends in the pasture for some R&R. It wasn’t long, however, before he returned to his old self. Godwin decided to bring him back to work and see what happened. He came back with a bang.

“I really think he is in better condition now than he was two years ago,” Godwin says.

First western entertainment experience of its kind to open in Arizona

Frontier Town expands its footprint by adding town, western entertainment, music, saloon and more to new oneof-a-kind western venue Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, Frontier Town, one of Arizona’s only remaining western town destinations, has undergone a massive property expansion to become the first western entertainment destination to be opened in Arizona in more than a

decade. Arizona’s past crowd-pleasing western and entertainment venues have virtually disappeared.

According to Marc Peagler, general manager of Frontier Town, the Wild West will come alive with the creation of a one-of-a-kind western town and the scheduling of action-packed western entertainment provided by Six Gun Entertainment, LLC. Awardwinning Six Gun Entertainment

performs stunt and acting shows that thrill western aficionados, residents, tourists and corporate businesses.

“Frontier Town, which turns 50 years old in 2019, is preparing for the next century by bringing the excitement of the missing Wild West experience to residents, business groups and tourists alike,” says Peagler. “Over the years, Arizona has lost so many wonderful western locations due to growth, construction and a lack of focus on our roots as Americans – the real Wild West.”

Chaz Lee, director of affairs and stunt coordinator for Six Gun Entertainment, says the authentic town, Greasewood, which also is a stunt theater, will be home to numerous Wild West acting and stunt performances in the days and months ahead.

The new entertainment core fully opens to the public on Saturday, October 13, 2018, with a surprise shootout show at noon. The expansion also includes a major venue for western weddings, known as AZ Rustic Weddings, a new saloon slated to open in early spring, a restaurant establishment named Greasewood, a new stage for western and headliner musical acts, and other novel accouterments to give guests a full flavor of the West from beginning to end.

“Frontier Town will become a top destination for people seeking Wild West entertainment,” says Peagler.

The initial dates are in 2018 are October 13 - 12 PM, Nov.10 & 24 12 PM, Dec. 8 - 12 PM. In 2019 they are Jan. 5 - 12 PM, Feb. 2 & 16 - 12 PM, March 2 & 16 - 12 PM Peager says that in addition to the exciting entertainment complex, more enhancements are planned for 2019.

The CMSA Western US Championship was held July 2528 2018 in Las Vegas Nevada at the South Point Casino and a few of the Arizona Shooters were able to win their respective classes in a traditional 5 stage match. Our history

Mounted archery is one of the oldest forms of Martial Arts on horseback. Desert Warriors of the Southwest has been a Horse Archery chapter of MA3 (Mounted Archery Association of the Americas) for 9 years.

We travel to National and International competitions. We have the 4 instructors.

In 2016, Korea held the 1st ever Martial Arts Masterships, where they only chose 17 venues to be represented and Horse Archery was one of them. Two of our members made the US team and brought home gold and silver medals.

We have 3 members that were chosen this year to represent Team USA in Hungary for the first IHAA (International Horse Archery Alliance) World competition.

This year our National event and will include an auction, bleacher seating, and some of the top Horse Archers in the USA

VanBebber will begin her new role on June 23.

In her new role, VanBebber will be responsible for planning, directing and coordinating the racing department, Racing Challenge and related programs.

history of involvement with American Quarter Horses and Quarter Horse racing and is well known as being one of the industry's most accomplished trainers. In 2011, she became the first female trainer to eclipse the 1,000th career win mark and she is the leading female trainer by money earned. Her resume also

Janet VanBebber includes being the recipient of the 2002 AQHA Mildred N. Vessels Special Achievement Award. Her career includes training world champion Tailor Fit, who remains ranked as one of the breed's top money earners – 15 years after his final race. With additional experience and knowledge of track administration and state racing affiliate involvement, her background makes her an excellent candidate to spearhead AQHA race initiatives.

Dr. Elaine Carpenter Service Oct 13th

A graduate from Colorado State University in Equine Surgery, Elaine was known around the state as the Equine Lameness Specialist. Working as a Surgeon with Chaparral Veterinary clinic, Cave Creek Equine Surgical Center and Southwest Equine, Elaine never refused to help a horse in need. With her pilot’s license, Elaine flew across the state to treat horses in all four corners of Arizona.

When she was not working as a surgeon, she would spend her evenings teaching Equine Anatomy and mentoring students.

Always the teacher, Elaine would never turn down an opportunity to share her knowledge. Whether in the operating room, in a lab or at a barn, Elaine often had students by her side, a smile on her face and a thumbs up for a job well done.

When she wasn’t helping horses or students, she was living life to the fullest. Rock climbing, flying, and

motorcycle racing were just some of the adventures that awaited her on the weekends. Colleagues, friends and students from across the country would follow her adventures online, living vicariously through her.

One of her proudest moments came in 2016 when she made the television show American Ninja Warrior.

Despite not making it up the warped wall, she was thrilled to be part of the show. After shoulder surgery, she trained even harder and was looking forward to competing on the 2018 show. Her loss has echoed across the hearts of all her knew her and left a hole in the SCC and Equine communities. Her infectious smile and love of life will be missed by all who were lucky enough to have known her.

Elaine’s family would like to invite her friends and students to a public service on Saturday, October 13, at 10:30 a.m. at CCV Scottsdale, 19030 N Pima Road, Scottsdale, AZ. There will be a reception immediately following the service.

VF Corp says it is spinning off its denim brands including Wrangler

For years, we’ve seen how Americans are ditching their jeans for stretchy, comfy leggings. Athleisure, the trend of wearing activewear out of the gym and into everyday life, isn’t just a trend anymore. It’s the new way we dress.

This has come to the attention of VF Corp, the holding company for dozens of footwear and apparel brands, including Lee, Wrangler, North Face, Vans, Timberland, and Reef. Today, the company says it is spinning off its denim brands–which also include Rock & Republic and Rustler–into a separate publicly traded company, so that it can focus on its activewear brands. VF’s denim business has been on the decline. Last year, it generated $2.66 billion in sales, down 3% from the previous year, and $422 million in profit, down 14%.

According to a statement by VF Corp, this separation will simplify operations and allow each company to focus on the two different areas of expertise. According to the Wall Street Journal, however, VF Corp may be looking to exit the denim business altogether by finding a buyer or another strategic option. Instead, VF Corp will concentrate on its activewear and outdoor brands, which generate an estimated $11 billion in revenue.

Startups have been quicker to pick up on the move to athleisure. Over the last few years, the market has been flooded with activewear brands and retailers, like Outdoor Voices, Bandier, and Varley. It’s taken the big, established corporations a bit longer to catch up. But it’s clear that jeans are quickly diminishing on the American fashion landscape and are being replaced with yoga pants.

The Sun Cities Saddle Club is a trail riding and social club for seniors.

We hold our general meetings on the 4th Monday of each month from September through March of each year. Social time begins at 9:30AM, with meeting start time at 10AM, Meetings are held monthly at Wooddale Village Retirement Community, 18616 N. 99th Avenue, Sun City, in the Activities Room.

(Located one block north of Union Hills on Concho Dr, just west of 99th Ave.) It is asked that you not walk through the dining room but enter from the outside that is marked. Even

though our last general meeting is in March, we continue to ride through the month of each season.

Trail rides (using rental horses or personal horses) are held every Thursday at stables and trails around the valley. Horse ownership in not required. Ride schedules are available at the meetings. Social events are also held during the riding season.

Prospective members are welcome to attend any meeting. You must be present at a meeting to join the club.

Membership is open to all residents of Sun City, Sun City West, Sun City Grand and Corte Bella.

Cowboy Fast Draw is one of the fastest growing shooting sports and the closest thing to a real gunfight. Your Diesel engine is more capable than you think!

Hopefully soon we will start to see some cooler temperatures heading our way. It’s been a long hot summer. A lot of trucks have been coming into the shop with the concern of overheating and/or running hot. Some of these have come down to coolant leaks, air flow issues, and, if you can believe, driving habits.

Overdrive transmissions and turbo chargers have been part of our diesel engines since the early 90’s (Yes there are exceptions, but let’s keep it simple for arguments sake). With these advancements in technology, our diesel engines have gotten quieter, improved on fuel economy, and power has been improved as well.

Would you believe that a lot of us don’t use our transmissions or turbos as they should be used?

When climbing a mountain a lot of us still have the mentality that our engine can power through the pull. For a turbocharged engine this can be the death of it.

Your engine requires you to be a little hard on it. Believe it or not, the more you push your engine and transmission, the happier it will be.

Letting your turbocharged engine struggle, and/or lug up the mountain, puts more stress on it. Heat is created in the transmission due to that final overdrive gear not being able to handle the load you are carrying - slipping occurs and heat is generated, which taxes your cooling system. At the same time, the low boost levels in your engine allow for exhaust gas temperatures to rise to very high to unsafe levels. If you have a pyrometer (exhaust gas temperature gauge) 1250 degrees in pretty much the magic number to stay under. Exhaust gas temps that go over this, can cause you to burn a hole in a piston, damage cylinder walls or valves, and hurt your injectors and so on.

Your engine is more capable than you think! Push your truck a little harder, let the transmission down shift, allow your engine to use the turbo giving you a higher boost figure. Higher boost numbers actually keep your exhaust temperatures lower. Downshifting your transmission makes it easier on the motor to do it’s job, and puts your transmission in gear which makes it easier to climb the mountain and easier for your truck to pull the load you are carrying.

All About Equine Animal Rescue, Inc. is a non-profit that was founded in 2009 by a group of people that were sick of seeing countless horses being neglected, abandoned, or sent to auction/ slaughter. Working hard they turned a family-owned ranchette into a working sanctuary and rehab center for horses, and since its start, they have had over two hundred horses come through their doors to live healthy, happy, and productive lives.

Being a non-profit specialty, therapy items are not always easy to get, but thanks to a $4,000 grant from the EQUUS Foundation and a separate corporate donation of $2,250 they where able to secure the funds and provide their equine residents the undeniable benefits of a TheraPlate. The EQUUS Foundation is the only national charity in the United States that is one hundred percent dedicated to ensuring the welfare of horses

The horses and staff at All About Equine Animal Rescue, Inc. are thrilled with the results they have seen in three horses so far thanks to regular use of the TheraPlate. “TheraPlate has a great application available for download and use with cell phones, making it easy to follow during a session.

Cahill is a twenty-year-old quarter horse that was suffering from an abscess and after getting used to the therapy plate he seemed to thoroughly enjoy his time on it; and since then he has been adopted to a loving home! Kasey is another senior resident at the center. At twenty

two years young, this gentle giant Clydesdale has had chronic hoof and abscess problems since he came to them two years ago; but since he has been getting on the TheraPlate he can move with ease around his paddock and perks up after his sessions on the plate.

From the biggest residents to the smallest, TheraPlate can help out any horse; just like Robbie the resident pinto miniature horse that has Cushing’s disease. After being introduced to the TheraPlate recently he now helps himself to the platform! “All in all, our horses appear to enjoy their time on the equipment, and it seems to have a beneficial effect to those horses that have been treated.” Said Elaine.

Launch of Chrysanphyton

Veterans Experience life-changing encounter with wild mustangs

2018 Mustang Heritage Foundation Veterans Program to kickoff October 8.

With the help of the Mustang Heritage Foundation’s (MHF) Veterans & Mustangs program, military veterans choose a BLM mustang, untouched by humans, and transform the horse into a gentled, adoptable equine companion. The program is hands-on for the veteran and often challenging. Working with the mustang is an experience

that connects the veterans with an animal need, but has also proven life changing for the veteran.

The 2018 fall session of the program starts on October 8. During the 6-week session, veterans will experience the transformation from “wild to mild” by working directly with their chosen wild mustang, in addition to learning marketable equine vocational skills and general equine knowledge. At the end of the session, the previously wild horses that participate in the program are available for adoption by the veteran participant or placed into private care.

“You cannot force a mustang to do anything. You have to open yourself up to new ideas and new behaviors that are not comfortable for you,” said Darrell Urey, a Spring 2018 program participant. “I've learned as much working with a mustang as I’ve learned about myself going through every Veterans Affairs anger management, PTSD course over a 10year period. I learned more in those weeks about myself, my reactions, my reasoning, and it’s all because of the mustang.”

The Veterans & Mustangs Program is completely reliant on donations.
