British bookseller Samuel Baker holds his first auction — several hundred rare books — over 10 nights in London. That was the official launch of what would one day be Sotheby’s.

Ben Briggs opens Ben R. Briggs Realtors, with just a few agents.

1976

Sotheby’s International Realty is founded to provide independent brokerages with a powerful marketing and referral program for luxury listings.
