British bookseller Samuel Baker holds his first auction — several hundred rare books — over 10 nights in London. That was the official launch of what would one day be Sotheby’s.

Ben Briggs opens Ben R. Briggs Realtors, with just a few agents.
1976
Sotheby’s International Realty is founded to provide independent brokerages with a powerful marketing and referral program for luxury listings. Young architect Robbie Briggs joins his father’s firm.

Robbie Briggs becomes the sole owner. That same year, the brokerage is accepted as a Sotheby’s International Realty affiliate, taking its capabilities, strategies and scope to new levels.

Sotheby’s International Realty realizes a historic year, with its agents achieving a record global sales volume of $204 billion, a 36 percent increase year over year.
