Grades Completed: K–1 Class #: 202 Location: Holmes Elementary Travel back in time with Jack and Annie from the Magic Tree House series. In this class, travel to Japan and learn about ninja warriors in “Night of the Ninjas.” Spend an exhilarating afternoon on one of the world’s largest rivers in “Afternoon on the Amazon” and create a sabertooth mask for “Sunset of the Sabertooth.” Your adventures won’t end there! In “Midnight on the Moon,” travel in space and create your own constellation! Join us for a grand adventure! If you have not read Magic Tree House books that’s OK, we will read them together. On Friday, share your adventures with family and friends. (See class #112 for different adventures for grades 1-2.)

q Magnificent Matter: Solids, Liquids and Gases
Grades Completed: K–2 Class #: 204 Location: Holmes Elementary Explore what makes up the world around you! Learn about solids, liquids and gases through fun activities, projects and science experiments. Make your own special paint, create an explosion in a sack and form sand from the moon! q Wizarding Academy
Grades Completed: 3–5 Class #: 300 Location: Holmes Elementary Fee: $5 Materials At Wizarding Academy, students will enjoy taking classes that all of our favorite witches and wizards participated in at Hogwarts! Students will start with getting all of their essentials at Diagon Alley. They will then participate in herbology, astronomy, care of magical creatures and so many more wizarding classes. Students will take part in a Quidditch match and a game of wizarding chess. They will learn to make several delicious wizarding snacks and we will end our week with a Holidays at Hogwarts celebration highlighting all the fun of a wizarding winter! Interested in science, engineering or computers? Do you love to build with LEGO® bricks? Ignite your creativity with an introduction to robotics and computer programming. Using LEGO® WeDo kits and LEGO® educational software, you will be challenged to solve real-world problems by creating one-of-a-kind machines with gears, motors and sensors. Grades Completed: 1–2 Class #: 210 Location: Holmes Elementary Before orbiting the galaxy you must master the skills of an astronaut. Practice completing space chores with astronaut-type gloves, build a space station and taste astronaut food including ice cream! Track constellations and learn amazing facts about the planets. You can’t launch your film canister rocket until you learn about the Earth’s rotation and location. Out in space, discover art, music and literature in another galaxy. Prepare for blast off! Learn about the basic areas of the brain in order to understand what part of the brain helps you talk, think, smell and feel. Let’s explore how our brain changes and what we can do to keep it healthy and happy. Design and build a “helmet” to protect this fantastic, elastic and perhaps most important organ of your body!
q Robotics: LEGO® MINDSTORMS® EV3 Day Camp, Levels 2 & 3
Grades Completed: 4–7 Class #: 302 Location: Holmes Elementary Fee: $5 Materials Design, build and program robots using the most advanced and newest LEGO® robotics technology—the powerful MINDSTORMS® EV3. Work as a team to complete real-world engineering and computer science challenges as you build and command robots that walk, talk, think and do anything you can imagine. With your ideas and the latest LEGO operating system and sensors, there are no limits to what you can do. Level 2—Explorer: Completed at least one class at Level 1 and/or experience through another program. Objectives are sensors, loops and switches. Level 3—Engineer: Completed at least one class of Level 2 or previous experience with sensors, loops and switches. From the Big Woods of Wisconsin to her prairie homes and school, we will follow the life of Laura as she learns crafts and cooking from her Ma and skills and songs from her Pa. On Wednesday, parents will drop off and pick up at Heritage School at Pioneers Park where Laura will be waiting to take you back to her classroom in Dakota Territory. This GIRLPowR™ class encourages you to explore different careers from bug and plant scientists to visual artists, from engineers to entrepreneurs, from toy inventors to coders, from coaches to actors and boundless careers beyond your imagination! You will meet with amazing women in different professional fields who will share their journey and talents with you. Experience different professions through hands-on and STEAM-focused activities, guest speakers, interactive field trips to Entomology Hall, the Nebraska Innovation Studio makerspace and more! All campers will also take the Strengths Explorer™ survey and complete activities to learn more about their strengths and talents throughout the course of the week and how it applies to their leadership styles. q Plant Yourself in the Garden
Grades Completed: 2–4 Class #: 304 Location: Southern Heights Presbyterian Church Explore nature through the study of gardening, plants and creative art projects at Southern Heights Food Forest, a community garden space. Learn firsthand as you dig in the dirt, plant seeds and seedlings, and taste vegetables. Research about food systems, the life cycle of plants, and why pollinators and compost are important to our environment. Build with natural materials such as tree cookies, sticks, pine cones and other creative projects in this certified Nature Explore outdoor classroom. q Retail Reality
Grades Completed: 5–7 Class #: 306 Location: Gateway Mall Would you like to own a retail store one day? Are you curious how decisions about location, product and promotion are made? Learn the ins and outs of creating and managing a store in the retail mall environment. From location to branding to inventory, this week-long class will introduce you to behind-the-scenes retail management concepts with daily activities to put your learning to work. On Friday, participants will pitch their store concept to a group of “investors” and attempt to get the most “Bright Lights Bucks” invested in their store. This class will be held at Gateway Mall each day, with partnered appearances from local entrepreneurs and merchandising professionals. Grades Completed: 6–8 Class #: 310 Location: Nebraska Innovation Studio Fee: $20 Materials Join us at Nebraska Innovation Studio – home to the UNL Makerspace – to create, collaborate, invent and innovate. Your week will include a tour of Innovation Studio and hands-on activities that will result in very cool take-home treasures. This will include a t-shirt silk-screened with your own design, a mold of your hand using casting resins and buttons you design to show your unique personality. Participants will also make things using the laser cutter and clay throwing wheels. You’ll start this class by entering a building full of tools and leave having used those tools to build confidence in your ability to problem-solve, create and design. You will need to bring a plain t-shirt (a cotton/polyester blend works best) for the screen-printing activity. Enter the nanoworld in the laboratories of UNL’s physics and astronomy building and see how it affects many different fields like physics, chemistry and biology. Make nano ice cream, nano composite material and squishy electrical circuits. Learn about magnetism, hydrogels that carry medicine, the ever-shrinking microchip and nanofabric that repels ketchup and other stains. q New Heights: Rock Climbing
Grades Completed: 6–8 Class #: 314 Location: Outdoor Adventures Center at UNL Fee: $20 Facilities Experience the rush of rock climbing! Connect with fellow students while you learn the basic technical skills required to get you climbing, including how to put on a harness and tie in the climbing rope.
