Monday and Tuesday, students will learn the basics of fishing at Holmes Lake with fishing rods donated by Scheels. Bait your line for a chance to catch the big one! On Wednesday and Thursday, travel to the Maas Farm in Denton for a hands-on ranch experience. Activities may include a hayrack tour, shearing sheep, feeding and caring for the livestock with a veterinarian, as well as the basics of raising and riding bulls. Design, build and program robots using the most advanced and newest LEGO® robotics technology—the powerful MINDSTORMS® EV3. Work as a team to complete real-world engineering and computer science challenges as you build and command robots that walk, talk, think and do anything you can imagine. With your ideas and the latest LEGO® operating system and sensors there are no limits to what you can do. Level 1—Builder: Entry level, limited or no experience with programming. Objectives are basic programming and robot movement. Level 2—Explorer: Completed at least one class at Level 1 and/or experience through another program. Objectives are sensors, loops and switches. Learn basic hand stitching and the use of a sewing machine along with how to pin and put together a project. How about creating a building that turns? In this camp you will think like an engineer to design and build structures using a variety of materials such as play dough, sticks, marshmallows, recycled objects and straws. We will even use life-sized interlocking tubes and spheres to design giant structures! Collaborate with a partner using the engineering process to test and then improve your ideas as you build. Discover cool sidewinders, boas and Komodo Dragons. Meet famous reptiles in books, make crafts and food, learn about reptile habitats, design a t-shirt and join in the “Reptile Rap.” Real reptiles will visit our class 4 out of 5 days and handling them is optional. “Iguana” see you there! Grades Completed: 3–6 Class #: 502 Location: Southwest High School ALL ABOARD THE HOGWARTS EXPRESS! You may want to check the skies for an owl, as your letter of acceptance might be on its way. Young wizards and witches will report to the Hogwarts castle for opening ceremonies. The Sorting Hat will sort first year students into houses, while returning Hogwarts students cheer from their house tables. There will be so much fun playing Quidditch and tackling trivia in the Tri-Wizard Tournament. Students will want a time-turner to fit in all the fun classes offered through the week! There will be Herbology, Potions, Divination, fun with “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” Spells, Wizard Wiki’s and more! On Friday, parents will drop off at SouthPointe for a morning trip to Diagon Alley. (Please wear tennis shoes every day.) We will be looking for you on Platform 9 ¾. Explore density, states of matter, chemical changes, pressure, flight, sound and light, the human body and ecosystems. q Perler Bead Mania
Grades Completed: 1–3 Class #: 518 Location: Holmes Elementary Fee: $5 Materials Perler beads are plastic fusible beads. These colorful beads will be arranged on plastic pegboards to form patterns and then fused together with a clothes iron (the iron will only be handled by an adult). Beads can also be strung into necklaces, woven into keychains or even assembled into three-dimensional decors. We will explore what we can create within themes such as sports, Disney, holidays, animals, careers and more! We will also discover the mechanics of how to create and assemble three-dimensional objects such as pencil boxes, miniature furniture or jewelry cases. Grades Completed: K–1 Class #: 504 Location: Holmes Elementary Spend the week as a “bubbleologist.” Discover what objects you can use to blow bubbles and which objects make the biggest or the smallest bubbles. During your week as a “bubbleologist,” you will create art using bubbles, make a different bubble wand each day and use your body and objects to make bubbles. Each day, help judge the creativity of each other’s creations. Learn about careers in cake decorating and food science. On Friday, showcase your talent to your family and friends as you decorate a cupcake using the skills you have learned all week. Grades Completed: 2–3 Class #: 522 Location: Holmes Elementary Are you curious about natural disasters? Do you keep an “eye on the sky” for weather changes? Join our meteorology team and make a rain gauge and wind sock for your own weather station. Measure daily weather changes and discuss how meteorologists observe and forecast the weather. Learn about the water cycle, make clouds in a jar and a tornado in a bottle. The weather is always changing so join us as we learn more about it!
