Create your very own one-of-a-kind books using a variety of materials and found objects. Your books will be personalized during construction to fit your story, your personality or a special occasion. Projects may include accordion fold, pop-up designs, flip books and various binding techniques. Engineering Day Camp q
Grades Completed: 6–8 Class #: 700 Location: UNL City Campus (Othmer Hall)/UNL East Campus/The Career Academy Fee: $20 Facilities In the laboratories and classrooms on the UNL campus and The Career Academy at Southeast Community College, learn about engineering and the design process used to define and solve problems to improve your world. You will be introduced to the Engineering Grand Challenges and various disciplines of engineering through special presentations and activities by College of Engineering faculty, students, and staff. Activities throughout the week may include designing with VEX robotics, creating a simple lie detector, solar energy activities, designing roller coasters and more. Campus and city tours may include an engineering tour of Memorial Stadium, the Tractor Test lab, the UNL Dairy Store or even a visit to the Midwest Roadside Safety Facility. Activities will take place at UNL City Campus on Monday and Thursday, UNL East Campus on Tuesday, and The Career Academy on Wednesday and Friday. Parents will be responsible for student drop off and pick up at these sites on each day. Schedule is subject to change. Grades Completed: K–1 Class #: 734 Location: Holmes Elementary Immerse yourself in the creative world of magical creatures. If you love unicorns and rainbows, then you will love our Monday lesson, in which we explore our uniqueness by creating our own magical recipe. On Tuesday, we will dive down deep to find personal treasure as mermaids. On Wednesday, we’ll try our luck with leprechauns, working together to create one large trap and maybe playing a few tricks. Thursday is all about trolls as we dance, sing and enjoy all things that are “hair-tastic” about these happy and hugging creatures. Friday will be a celebration of our magical findings. Discover the magic of FROZEN through science and art as you create a classroom kingdom of ice and snow. Learn the secrets of Elsa’s magic touch so you can freeze water with the touch of your finger and build your own frosty Olaf in the middle of the summer. Projects may include creating ice sculptures, snowflakes, snow slime, erupting snowballs and so much more as you learn about the magic of liquids and solids with ice and snow. q Over The Rainbow to Oz
Grades Completed: K–2 Class #: 706 Location: Holmes Elementary Follow along with Dorothy as you explore the magical world of munchkins and the merry, merry land of Oz. The familiar characters from “The Wizard of Oz” will take you on a variety of learning adventures in all your favorite subjects—music, science, art, math and reading. Frolic and dance down the yellow brick road, learn sign language to “Over the Rainbow” and many more fun projects. q Diggin’ Up Dinos
Grades Completed: 1–2 Class #: 708 Location: Holmes Elementary Fee: $4 Field Trip Become a paleontologist as you explore and dig up hidden fossils that have long been forgotten. Feel and touch some real fossilized teeth as we investigate what dinosaurs must have eaten. Hatch your own dinosaur and determine its type, what it liked to eat, and how it lived millions of years ago. Design and create an elaborate habitat that your dinosaur can call home. On Wednesday, parents will drop off and pick up at Morrill Hall where you will get up close and personal with some real dinosaur fossils!
q It’s All Greek to Me: Olympus Adventures
Grades Completed: 3–5 Class #: 720 Location: Holmes Elementary Can you imagine fighting the many-headed Hydra, stealing the Golden Fleece from a firebreathing dragon, or flying with wings of wax and feathers? If you think you can defeat the Basilisk or the Minotaur, then spend the week on Mt. Olympus exploring the gods and goddesses of Greek myths and legends. Learn about the Trojan War, perform a play, write myths and compete in an Arachne weaving contest. A week-long board-game of By Jove! and standing with Greek Hoplites in an outdoor game called Phalanx are just part of the fun. On Friday, we will enjoy a Greek feast, dressing in tunics and sharing the week’s adventure on Mt. Olympus. q Makit Messy: Slime & Splatter
Grades Completed: 3–5 Class #: 722 Location: Makit Takit: Lincoln’s Craft Studio Fee: $25 Materials This class is also offered during Bright Lights Week 1 as class #122 and Week 4 as class #528. Spend the week with us at Makit Takit as we explore the messiest of crafts. We’ll be making several different kinds of slime, splatter painting and learning how to do pour paintings. We’ll also spend some time making prints using gel plates and turning those prints into journals. We can’t forget our spa day, either! We’ll be making sugar scrubs and bath bombs to help us clean up after a week of messy making. You’ll take home multiple projects and good memories from this class! Taught by Makit Takit Staff

Design, build and program robots using the most advanced and newest LEGO® robotics technology—the powerful MINDSTORMS® EV3. Work as a team to complete real-world engineering and computer science challenges as you build and command robots that walk, talk, think and do anything you can imagine. With your ideas and the latest LEGO® operating system and sensors there are no limits to what you can do. Level 1—Builder: Entry level, limited or no experience with programming. Objectives are basic programming and robot movement. Level 2—Explorer: Completed at least one class at Level 1 and/or experience through another program. Objectives are sensors, loops and switches. Grades Completed: 3–6 Class #: 726 Location: Outdoor Adventures Center at UNL Fee: $13 Facilities The trails are open and ready to ride! Spend a week enjoying the fresh air, developing your riding skills and building your confidence on trails (closed course, single-track, and the streets of Lincoln). Learn about the ABC Quick Check, how to change a tire and basic bike maintenance skills as you develop your riding skills for transportation and recreation. On Thursday, parents will drop off and pick up at Van Dorn Park (9th & High Street). The closing ceremony will begin at 11:15 AM on Friday and all are welcome. q Guitar Discovery
Grades Completed: 4–8 Class #: 728 Location: Holmes Elementary This class is also offered during Bright Lights Week 4 as class #536. Guitar Discovery is for the beginner who has no experience at all with the guitar, or the person who has some rough basic guitar skills. If you want to learn how to play guitar (notes, riffs, chords, songs) this class is a great introduction. Small groups each work with an instructor, which means a lot of fun and learning can take place. You’ll be loaned an electric guitar by Dietze Music for the class, which you can take home each night to practice. You’ll receive a packet of information with songs, riffs, exercises and notes that you’ll keep and be able to learn from for years to come. If you’re willing to practice, we’ll show you the way forward to rocking the guitar! On Thursday, parents will drop off and pick up their students at Dietze Music Briarhurst (S. 48th & Hwy 2) for a class that will include a tour of the music store and instrument repair shop, plus regular small group learning and fun. At the open house on Friday, prepare to demonstrate how each chess piece moves and attacks on a life-sized chessboard. Thespian skills optional as the queen attacks a pawn in this dramatic rendering.

Grades Completed: 3–5 Class #: 714 Location: Nebraska Game and Parks Outdoor Education Center Fee: $18 Facilities This is an all-around outdoor skills class featuring archery, slingshots, tomahawks, bow fishing, outdoor cooking and atlatl. Enjoy a week with the Outdoor Education Center staff exploring and challenging yourself with a variety of outdoor skills. Safety is emphasized! Become an outdoor skill scientist as you discover the physics of hitting the bullseye, energy heating a Dutch oven treat and testing gravity with a projectile released from your slingshot. Each day participate in exciting range activities that develop concentration and coordination as you work toward Range Commander status. Students must be 8 years old or older.
