JOHN CAMPBELL jcampbell@metroland.com BRIGHTON - High water and punishing winds are wreaking havoc along Brighton's shoreline, alarming residents whose properties are bearing the brunt of nature's brute force. Greenway Circle has been especially hard hit by wind-driven waves, flooding crawl spaces and basements. The second time it happened, on June 14, several layers of rocks and stones were deposited onto yards as well. "The waves were 13, 14 feet (high) coming in," said Linda Rawlings. "It was almost apocalyptic." The waves were so powerful they toppled concrete walls and shifted boulders weighing more than a tonne that formed part of the barrier. "It's incredible how much of the lake's bed has landed on people's

JOHN CAMPBELL jcampbell@metroland.com BRIGHTON - BARU needs your support. The Brighton Auxiliary Rescue Unit has launched a $300,000 fundraising campaign to replace the 30year-old vessel it uses to find people in distress on Lake Ontario. The one currently in service, a 30-foot Sea Ray cabin cruiser, "is adequate for most rescue scenarios, many of which are in dangerous conditions, but she is getting old and evermore costly to maintain," BARU said in a news release announcing the campaign. A reserve fund has been

established for the purchase of a custom-built boat within the next 12 months. BARU receives no government funding, apart from a $1,000 grant from the municipality of Brighton each year. Volunteers buy their own uniforms and safety equipment, and raise money to cover the unit's operating costs, which average $6,000 to $8,000 a year. The fundraising campaign is "a huge deal," said unit leader Bill Bernaerts. The vessel BARU uses, a pleasure boat the unit converted, is "not very conducive to rescuing people," and lacks the features a

custom-built rescue boat has, such as a high railing to keep crew members safe, he said. The unit has raised $70,000 to date, following receipt of a $5,000 donation from Jennifer Lemieux, vice-president and branch manager at RBC Dominion Securities' Kingston office, who has clients in the Brighton area. The unit is on call around the clock during the boating season. Its service delivery standard is to assemble a volunteer crew and begin a mission within 30 minutes of being dispatched by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre at CFB Trenton.

Straight shaft brushcutters are the choice of lawn care professionals and large property owners. They manage heavier brush and thicker weeds better than curved shaft models. Straight shaft brushcutters have more reach and some can interchange cutting attachments like metal blades to offer enhanced versatility. Taller individuals enjoy the extended length of the shaft. For the avid user bike handles are also available.

IN PRAISE OF FAMILIARITY COLUMNIST NEIL CRONE SAYS CONNECTIONS HELP PEOPLE GET THROUGH DIFFICULT MOMENTS

northumberlandnews.com

NEIL CRONE Column

Film and television sets are strange places. A disparate group of people are thrown together for anywhere from two weeks to six months, working 12 to 14 hour days and nights, then trudging back to a hotel room in a strange town to grab a few hours of sleep before getting up and doing it all over again the next day. Life - everything and everyone you might be involved with outside of the production - is, necessarily, put on hold for the time it takes to finish shooting the show. It's a weird, very cloistered experience. A natural byproduct of which is that the cast and crew become like a surrogate family to one another. They are, after all, the only people you will likely be seeing and interacting with for the duration of the production. This sense of family is a good and a bad thing. Like any family dynamic there will be dysfunction, squabbles, differences of opinion. There will also, thankfully, be grace, generosity and remarkable kindness. And these connections are the things that get you through the long hours and the difficult moments. I know it's a politically incorrect, even dangerous standpoint in these days where most of us are walking on social eggshells, but I am a big fan of familiarity. I like to hug people,

to put a hand on their shoulder or arm when I'm talking with them, to call them by a nickname or a familiar of their given name. I have even, on occasion, used the words "dear," "pal" and "hon." And I don't apologize for that. When I use those terms, I am in no way demeaning the individual I am addressing or pursuing any inappropriate agenda. Quite the opposite. I am telling them "I like you," "I appreciate you," "I am very glad you are here and I am grateful for the work you do." Most people, in my experience, not only understand this, but welcome it. I certainly do. Especially for locations like film sets, where people can be stressed, exhausted or put upon. Situations where far less kind familiars can easily be thrown around. We may err, but let us always err on the side of connection, of friendship. Because at the end of the day, those two items are everything. Which is why I love working in my business. A business where, in spite of some despicable behaviour by a few monsters, it's still largely OK to let people know, in a million little words and ways, that they mean something to you. And why I dearly hope the current moral pendulum swings back sometime soon. I understand why we are where we are at this point in time. I firmly believe in the Me Too movement. There are changes afoot that are long overdue. And we must, all of us, be vigilant to ensure abuses are not condoned. But I always cringe a little when I see a baby being thrown out with the bathwater. Neil Crone, actor, comic, writer, saves some of his best lines for this column

LOCAL WOMEN HELPING KIDS MAKE MUSIC SONG, 100+ WOMEN WITH HEART DESERVE KUDOS, WRITES COLUMNIST MARIANNE MARUSIC MARIANNE MARUSIC Column

Listening to beautiful music is easy. Making it is not. Instruction can be expensive, as it takes materials and experienced teachers to run choirs and orchestral groups. Thanks to the organization known as SONG (Sounds of the Next Generation), children in Cobourg and Port Hope have been receiving musical instruction for free in a socially-inclusive after-school program run by professional music teachers, funded solely by

donation. SONG is pleased to announce the receipt of a $5,550 grant from the 100+ Women With Heart, a group that raises money for community projects. The donation will support the expansion of SONG's current programming for primary school students to include grades 7 to 9 as students transition to high school. "The expanded program will have great impact in our community by providing advanced music instruction, leadership training and mentoring opportunities to a broader age range of underserved youth in Northumberland County," says SONG board chair Trish Dryden. "Ultimately the grant will enhance pathways for our students for more learning, teamwork, creativity and success." The 100+ Women With Heart awards quarterly grants to local organizations through a nomination

and voting process among its members. The goal is to bring people together to foster collaboration and to emphasize the importance of collective giving within the community. "Supporting the development of children and youth is just one of the reasons why 100+ Women Northumberland exists," says Nicole Beatty, founder of 100+ Women Northumberland. "We're thrilled to facilitate a community impact grant that will have long-term meaning and change for grassroots charities like SONG." SONG's mandate is to "change lives, one rehearsal at a time." And with the help of local women, SONG is able to continue and expand its reach, bringing music to more young people. Bravo to all! More information at SONG at www.songprogam.org or info@songprogram.org. BRIGHTON FLOODING HAS RESIDENTS ON EDGE Continued from page 1

front lawns," Mayor Brian Ostrander said. He arranged for Fire Chief Rick Caddick to take him, MP Kim Rudd and MPP David Picinni on a tour of the areas affected by flooding. They got together for two hours on June 25 "to discuss a way forward post-flood. Right now we're in protection mode and still trying to help residents protect their own homes," Ostrander said. Darwin Hamilton said there were waves more than 20 feet high hitting the front wall on his property. The water flowed into his workshop, reaching a depth of six inches inside, and spilled across the roadway, a distance of several hundred feet. He set up three sump pumps to carry water away from his buildings and called the fire chief at 5:30 a.m. asking for help. "God bless him, he came out and looked after us and looked after the neighbours," Hamilton said. Firefighters were summoned and more pumps brought in. "If it wasn't for him there would have been a lot more damage." Hamilton, Rawlings and others question why more water

THE ISSUE: RESIDENTS LIVING ALONG LAKE ONTARIO IN BRIGHTON HAVE HAD TO DEAL WITH HIGH WATER LEVELS AND STRONG WINDS THIS YEAR LOCAL IMPACT: NATURAL FORCES - EXACERBATED BY HUMAN DECISIONS, SOME WOULD SAY - HAVE BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR EROSION, FLOODING AND PROPERTY DAMAGE isn't being released from Lake Ontario into the St. Lawrence River at the Cornwall dam, where outflows are controlled by the Lake Ontario St. Lawrence River Board. "You think they would have learned in 2017 with that fiasco," Rawlings said, referring to the last time there was major flooding in communities along the lake. This year is "twice as bad," she said. "The levels are just way, way too high," she said. There's "got to be a happy

medium" where the needs of communities upstream and downstream on the dam are equally served. The municipality has called upon the federal government to work with the International Joint Commission in developing a new plan for regulating water levels in Lake Ontario, which includes flood mitigation. Ostrander said all three politicians agreed at their meeting they "need to advocate together for a stronger look at Plan 14," the document that governs outflows from Lake Ontario at Cornwall. Plan 2014, which came into effect two years ago, allows for higher water levels than the previous regulation. They will also lobby for infrastructure dollars that will give municipalities and shoreline residents "the ability to protect themselves." There is a disaster relief assistance program for Ontarians, which they will review as well. Local residents weren't eligible for funding in 2017 because Brighton hadn't been declared a disaster area, said Ostrander, "so we need to look into whether that needs to happen." The mayor said the municipality has utilized more staffing resources than it did two years ago "to try to make sure damage isn't more severe, but we do

know that there are properties along our lakeshore that will have significant claims if they're allowed to do that." Francoise Leigh agreed "it's worse than 2017." Her cottage sits above the ground and she could hear the water "sloshing underneath." She's a senior who can still "keep up with the work, but I don't need this," Leigh said. She had "three feet of small stones" deposited across the front of her property "and that happened in two hours." Along with the gravel came hundreds and hundreds of dead fish. "The smell was terrible," Hamilton said. Firefighters "spent most of the day" at Greenway Circle sandbagging "under some pretty intense conditions and rapidly rising waters," Caddick said. "Where there was water in the morning was all rock in the afternoon. (The wave action) destroyed walls." "But we were able to help save some property, and that's what it's all about." Caddick said "Greenway Circle has been hit hard, as has Gosport, as has Shoal Point (Road) and Evergreen Lane." "There's been significant shoreline damage - erosion and the destruction of sea walls ... that sort of thing."

STORY BEHIND THE STORY

The Independent has been reporting on flooding occurring in different parts of Brighton, with new developments taking place frequently. The latest is the mayor meeting with the MP and MPP, who were given a tour of the areas affected.

MAYOR SIGNS UP FOR BIKE RALLY JOHN CAMPBELL jcampbell@metroland.com TRENT HILLS - Mayor Bob Crate is going on a three-day bike ride in August, not to get away from it all but to raise money for the People With AIDS Foundation. He's currently in training for the Aug. 14-16 Friends for Life Bike Rally that will begin at Queen's University in Kingston and end in Montreal, a distance of 313 kilometres. He took part in a oneday rally for the foundation last year, travelling from Toronto to Port Hope. He was "inspired" to get involved by a friend of his who was co-chair of the event. He likes that it gives him a challenge and that he's having fun while "doing some good for part of the community."

"the largest practical support service provider in Canada serving people living with HIV/AIDS. Funds raised through the Bike Rally ensure that people living with HIV/AIDS get access to programs and services that nourish their whole self in a welcoming and healing space." Crate said he's been going on bike rallies since around 2000 when he and a group of co-workers entered a team for a fundraiser on behalf of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Crate said he has to raise $2,500 in order to go on the rally. "If I can just get a hundred people to give me 25 bucks I'm in," he said. As of June 18, he had raised $800. Crate, who's 71, said he's "not an avid" cyclist. He goes for a ride "once in a while. But when I started this, you've got to get ready." In the week prior to the interview he had ridden about 100 kilometres in total. He finds it "amazing" that going for a 35-kilometre bike ride helps lower his high blood pressure. "It will drop 25 points," he said. The three-day rally is new this year. The fundraising event started out as a six-day, 600-km bike ride from Toronto to Montreal. Now in its 20th year, the bike rally has been supported by more than 3,800 cyclists and crew members, who have raised in excess of $15 million for the PWA. The foundation says it's

BRIGHTON - It was a year to remember for Jake Hollinger, East Northumberland Secondary School's senior boys athlete of the year. He won two silver medals at the OFSAA track and field championships, in the 1,500metre and 3,000 m events, while setting a school record in the shorter distance (3:52.77) that had stood for 23 years. Hollinger also placed seventh last fall in cross-country at the provincial level, the fifth-best finish in the event by an ENSS student in the history of the school. "Other notable achievements from Jake's final year of high school include his Canadian title in the youth 3,000 m from last August's Canadian track and field championship," ENSS teacher/coach Anne Falla said at the Blue Dragons Athletic Reception held June 13. Hollinger also earned a bronze medal in the 1,500 m at the nationals, and last September "he earned the coveted elite runner status at an international cross-country meet in Rochester." Falla congratulated Hollinger on his outstanding high school athletic career, saying: "You've made your place in ENSS history." Emily Lange, the school's senior girls athlete of the year, was MVP of her hockey team and qualified for OFSAA for the first time in her final year by winning the singles title for badminton at COSSA. She then qualified for two other events at the provincial level, by finishing second at COSSA in doubles tennis with partner Kiera Taylor, and being a member of the senior girls 4x100 m relay team. Another Hollinger is following in Jake's footsteps, younger brother Isaac, East Northumberland's junior boys athlete of the year. He went undefeated in cross-country and in the 800 and 1,500 m races all the way up to OFSAA, where he placed in the top 12 in the two track events. Teacher/coach Rebecca Turner praised Hollinger as a committed athlete who impresses with his confidence. He's "a fierce and gutsy competitor" who's motivated, which makes him "a force to be reckoned with when he competes," she said. Junior girls athlete of the year Taylor Powell is another dedicated and committed athlete. She helped her cross-country team win two meets and place second at COSSA. Taylor, who played hockey as well, earned two firsts at COSSA, individually in the 400 m, and as a member of the 4x100
