iving with diabetes is not easy, but one group that is making a difference is Connected in Motion, a community of people living with type 1 diabetes. This charitable organization is dedicated to creating a culture of support for self-management through education, sport, and outdoor adventure. Having emotional support is key in overcoming the challenges that arise after a diagnosis, which include making lifestyle changes such as monitoring meal plans and insulin intake. With members across Canada, Connected in Motion brings together people with diabetes and their support networks to hike, bike, paddle, camp, or just have a good time. This emphasis on physical activity is especially important considering exercise can be one of the more complicated aspects to navigate for people living with diabetes. They must ensure to keep different parametric indexes (weight, blood glucose, etc.) under a certain level at all times – not an easy feat, that can discourage many. The good news is that innovative tools such as the Accu-Chek Connect system make it easy to get accurate blood glucose readings, share and analyze stored data in a single, convenient device. Its downloadable app lets users access results at their convenience and share them with their caregivers in real- time. The Accu-Chek Connect also comes equipped with a diabetes management
system that allows people living with diabetes and their healthcare provider to identify and utilize key diabetes information more efficiently and accurately than with typical logbooks. This customized approach helps reduce patient stress and anxiety, and provides increased freedom and peace of mind. How to predict future body aches and pain now www.newscanada.com
o you ever look at the bottom of your shoes? D Experts say shoe treads can tell a lot about the way you walk and can even help predict the development of pain in your feet, ankles, knees, hips, and possibly your back. “Most people don’t think about their feet and lower limbs until they start to hurt, but shoe wear patterns can indicate possible issues before pain develops,” explains Kevin Fraser, president of the Pedorthic Association of Canada and a Canadian certified pedorthist. “The wear patterns on your shoes illustrate the repetitive motion of your feet and lower limbs, so they show if you have structural concerns that may lead to the development of pain and mobility problems.” Fraser says symmetrical wear on both shoes is normal, particularly along the edge of the heel and the big toe. However, it’s concerning if one shoe is worn more than the other, the heel is worn excessively, or there is a localized area of wear. Excessive wear along the outer side or inner edges is another warning sign. In addition to examining your tread wear, Fraser recommends placing your shoes on a flat surface. The shoes should lie flat. If they tip inwards or outwards or the sides lean in or out, you should consider booking a consultation with a foot expert as you may have a biomechanical abnormality such as muscle imbalance, a leg length difference, or feet that roll too much inwards or outwards.
Healthy feet roll gently from the outside of the heel inwards towards the big toe, so the arch absorbs the impact of each step to cushion the ankles, knees and hips. M
ary Lawrie defies almost every notion of convention in the best way possible. Her spritely voice conveys both the confidence and competence of a woman who believes in living a rich and full life, alongside her strong Scottish accent. Now, at 95 years of age Mary laughs as she explains why she jumped out of a plane twice. Also, she cannot for one moment understand why anyone else would care. For Mary, this is normal and her love of life and thrill seeking ways started early. Mary recounts, “I had a dream since I was in my mid-20s, and it was always in the back of my mind. My first husband was in the parachute regiment and told me the sensation of jumping out of a plane was second to none and I thought I wanted to try it. The first time was for my 90th birthday, the second, celebrated my 95th.” The Scottish native, born in 1920, served as a secretary with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers during the Second World War. Joining the British Armed Forces in 1942, Mary defied the wishes of her father and unknowingly defined her philosophy on life. She repeatedly states, “You must keep active

and take an interest in life and do things, go places, don’t just sit on your backside, stay engaged especially in other people and other countries.” Her naturally inquisitive and adventuresome personality matched well with the travel inherent in her new position and landed her in Caserta Palace as well as a hospital in Naples during a bombing raid by the Germans. Events she took in stride. She came to Canada in 1953 and still had her dream of learning to parachute. In fact, after securing her first job in Toronto, again in the secretarial field, she began to save and research how to make her dream a reality. The only place to learn how to parachute was in Hamilton. Mary took a bus and soon discovered the costs to travel to and pay for lessons exceeded her wages. Being too expensive, she put the matter aside in her mind and continued life. She married the love of her life and together raised two children. At the age of 40, she travelled around the world, visiting family, exploring historical marvels, and shopping. Though the dream never left, she embraced the life before her and continued to be curious while devoting

herself to her responsibilities. Mary states, “I had other things to think about but I never forgot.” When her daughter asked Mary how she was going to celebrate her 90th birthday, Mary instantly knew the answer. She had travelled extensively and enjoyed all life had to offer with one exception, she was going to jump out of a plane. Mary planned the tandem jump in near Barrie and although 90, she couldn’t understand why everyone was so cautious. After all, as Mary states, “I didn’t feel old.” After signing what she remembers as a 40plus page document waiving liability of any kind, Mary was harnessed across her chest and around her legs, and brought to the plane. She was about to skydive and make her long-standing dream a reality. Though she

does make special note of the fact, “I never did get a helmet,” - a safety precaution she found amusing in its absence. Mary recalls the first jump vividly, saying, “It was absolutely fantastic. The freefall from up there allowed me to see everything clear as a bell, even the wee cars on the road, despite my macular degeneration. The sensation was lovely, floating to the ground. I only gave a start when the parachute opened.” The second time, Mary jumped ahead

On June 6, Mary again was harnessed and took another plunge midair, enjoying every moment of falling and embracing the wonderful sensation of flying and seeing everything without her glasses. With a second jump under her belt Mary shares, “I’m not going to jump again. I have been able to do it twice with no bumps or bruises, so there is no need to try it again. Initially when I thought about it I decided, my husband has died, I may as well jump now; at 90 if I break my neck what difference does it make.” Mary has recently moved from Brighton to Legion Village in Cobourg. Though uncertain about moving into a retirement place, she had put her name in five years earlier and a spot became available. Mary simply says,

“I wasn’t sure but I thought I should.” She still doesn’t feel old and believes her life and attitude are unremarkable. When asked about how she would advise people on fulfilling their dreams and living a long life Mary is humble and her words are simple and wise, “Don’t bemoan your fate, find what you can do and do it, and if not now, then later. Keep life interesting. If you sit and do nothing you get old quickly. Oh, and of course, don’t smoke and drink.”

n the country town of Warkworth, visitors and patients literally cross a small bridge to be welcomed into Bridge Hospice, a sunny location built specifically for quality, residentialstyle end-of-life care. For the dying, hospices are a reprieve from the beeping machines, medical interventions, and restricted visitor hours. For families, watching their loved one enjoy music, family, and even the family pet in a home-like setting can bring unspoken peace for inevitable anxious days. When it comes to dying, most hope to pass surrounded by loved ones, ideally at home. When a patient has significant care needs, the

needed, and the family can be with them and make the most of the final days available to a person,” said Craig Kerr, secretary of the Board of Directors for Bridge Hospice. The centre was the brainchild of Pauline Faull, Lynda Pecora, and Rosaleen Dunne, who met at a party and realized a dream to provide space to made final days the happiest they can be. They fundraised, generated ideas, and finally built the hospice with three bed spaces, welcoming residents in 2013. Patients arrive at the hospice when they are expected to live less than a month but want a peaceful dying experience. “It’s not about prolonging life,” said Craig. “It’s about making the passing the most honourable.” Hospice care differs from a hospital room death in countless ways. For the community, the financial burden is significantly less, with
hospital stays averaging a $1,000 a day and hospice care just $300 dollars daily. The differences are most acute for families and patients, as Bridge Hospice welcomes family pets for visits, provides access to therapy animals, and gives loved ones the option to stay in the room, thanks to a complete open door policy. In a smaller facility, residents also receive an intimate level of care hospitals simply don’t have the staff or funds to provide. “Our contention is the three and four bed residential hospice has a special place in rural Ontario,” said Craig. “The quality of life is slightly different than a larger city centre.” Bridge Hospice has a roster of personal support workers and volunteers who are on hand to provide medical care and to read to residents or simply have a pleasant conversation when the mood strikes. “It’s

not just about the physical side,” said Craig. “Health symptoms are managed by professionals, but there’s an emotional and physical element of support.” When death does come, residents are wrapped in a special quilt, donated by local quilters, so they may travel to their final resting place swathed in a piece of community comfort. Like any service provider, securing funds is a constant struggle to maintain operating costs, a roster of volunteers, and other essentials. Since patients do not pay any fees to reside at the hospice, and Bridge Hospice receives no government funding, fundraising efforts are constant. “Once you get through the initial entrepreneurial phase, get it built, and the dream becomes reality, a new reality sets in that you have to have a long term business model that will allow you to keep functioning and be sustainable into the future,” said Craig. The hospice runs several regular fundraisers, including a Mother’s Day run, a golf tournament, and the W8 8-Miler & 5K on October 22 this year. While these events are vital for Bridge Hospice to continue providing end-of-life care, they also see it as a time to reconnect with families of former

residents’ who come out to support the cause. Fundraisers are also a great time to encourage new volunteers to come aboard. “If they see what they’re contributing to, financially or time wise, it’s easier to attract volunteers,” Craig said. The hospice is full of warmth and light, a place to rejoice and celebrate life instead of focus on the sadness of death. Much as when they arrive, departing visitors cross Bridge Hospice’s solid wooden bridge; a metaphorical step from life to death and on again. Patients in the hospice’s care will depart in a literal and figurative blanket of love, the soft fibres of the quilt sending them on their way to peace, in whatever form that comes. I
n 1968 when Simon and Garfunkel released their Bookends album, they sang in Old Friends, “Can you imagine us years from today, sharing a park bench quietly, how terribly strange to be seventy.” Hopefully, there is a park bench near Albert Hall, because Paul Simon, who turns 75 in October, starts the UK leg of his 2016 tour in November, on the heels of his four-month North American tour. The performer, whose success both solo and as part of the famed duo spans five decades, is not alone as an ageless icon. Willie Nelson is also touring this fall, including shows from San Francisco to Casino Rama. At 83, he plans to make stops at Farm Aid and the Outlaw Music Festival, where he’ll play with Neil Young, who will turn 71 in November. Willie, as usual, will be backed by his band, including his sister Bobbie, who is 85. It’s hard to find a Rolling Stone under 70 – Ronnie Wood is the baby of the group at 68 – and they’re still filling stadiums. Tony Bennett, 90, recorded his first album - Boulevard of Broken Dreams – in 1950 and 65 years later released a new jazz album Look for the Silver Lining, shortly after his collaboration with Lady Gaga on Cheek to Cheek.
By comparison, Brighton’s popular musical duo RandR are the new kids on the block; they’re almost a boy band. Ralph spent 32 years at TVO, and Ray was a selfemployed cabinet maker, and both chose Brighton as their retirement homes. Ray and his wife Parise moved to the Northumberland town in 2004 and Ralph and his wife Angie arrived in 2009, although Ralph has a history with his new hometown. Shortly after the Second World War, Ralph’s parents Gerrit and Nies joined thousands of their countrymen and left the Netherlands, seeking a better life in Canada. Leaving Rotterdam, a 10-day voyage on the Groote Beer took them to Quebec City, where they cleared customs, boarded a westbound train. They arrived in Brighton at 3 a.m. on November 23, 1953. Ralph was four years old and spent his first year in Canada living on a farm and attending school in Hilton. The family moved on, but all roads lead to Brighton, and just over a half century later, Ralph returned to his first Canadian hometown. While Ralph’s history with Brighton is substantial, his relationship with Ray is relatively new, however RandR quickly achieved an enviable popularity. They

have performed together more than 500 times since their debut in 2011 and are known for their philanthropic kindnesses – they donated their time at last year’s Memory Junction fundraising rally, another fundraiser for an orphanage in Haiti, and at Hilton Hall Heritage Centre’s Christmas concert – and are in demand throughout the region. This summer, due to constant demand, they released their first CD R’s and Theirs, featuring original music and covers of some of their favourite songs. It’s a culmination of a lifetime love of music. Ray recalled a music teacher giving him his first public performance at about five in the rural one-room Conger school. He played Good King Wenceslas, and tells the story of his stellar debut in his book The Way It Was. At 16, he bought his first guitar, and his cousin showed him three chords. “I learned D, G, and A and thought I could play,” he laughed. “I played quietly in the background with friends. We were all equally bad, so we thought we were pretty good. I stayed that way until I met Ralph.” From an early age, Ralph’s love of music shone through, including the de Jonge Junior Beetles Band, where Ralph played a wooden guitar silhouette as Paul McCartney and his younger brother was Ringo, using their mother’s pots and pans as drums. “We never made it out of the basement,” Ralph admitted. He bought his first guitar at 14, with money earned pruning Christmas trees in Orono all one summer. He joined his first band and sang with the Glee Club in grade 9 of that year, and has been in the business since, spending a lifetime performing, writing,

recording, and editing music. He and a former colleague scored two feature length movies and various television shows, always in the background. Ray and Ralph are certainly in the limelight now. They met, realized their voices worked well together, spent a year getting comfortable, and hit the road in 2011. Their set list now includes more than 65 songs, including covers and original music. “We go for tempo, and then harmony,” explained Ray, who is an avowed Luddite, and in awe of Ralph’s ability to massage their music digitally. “The stuff he does on the computer, it’s amazing.” Ralph is equally impressed with Ray’s ability to engage with the audience. “It was the first question I had for him,” Ralph smiled. “Are you good in front of a microphone?” Ray is a gifted raconteur, either through his books or in front of a crowd, and straight-forward. “I don’t know,” he remembers answering. “I’ve never been in front of one.” Turns out, Ray is a natural, and with about 100 Continued on pg 28

performances each year, it’s a comfortable place for him. Ralph is still happy in the background, but busy with levels and lead and intricate guitar licks and harmonies. Usually he performs without shoes, and his trademark socks are a fan favourite. RandR can be found throughout the greater Quinte area, with regular performances from Cobourg to Belleville to Prince Edward County. They are regulars at Isaiah Tubbs, and appeared on Dining INNvasion. They love performing at retirement and long term care residences because the audience is so appreciative, and they know music makes a joyous difference. They also love the Christmas season. “People love Christmas carols; everyone is into the spirit, and they sing along,” smiled Ray. “Carols are very traditional and we love putting our spin on them, yet respecting the original.” RandR perform at the Hilton Hall Heritage Centre Christmas Sing-a-long, where Ray shares his

King Wenceslas days and the guys lead the audience through a complicated hilarious 12 Days of Christmas. The repertoire is expansive, with upbeat pop and poignant ballads, and each set list is meticulously crafted. Ralph admitted the days are sometimes gruelling, particularly those with multiple performances. They typically perform 15 songs per hour, starting with an up tempo piece and ending with Four Strong Winds. “We’re older, we’re not teenagers, but music keeps us young. I could have pursued music as a career, but it’s more fun now because there isn’t any pressure. How many jobs do you finish and people applaud? It’s great.” For Ray, it’s a total surprise. “I never dreamed of this; I just needed something to do and this sounded like a good thing.” Ralph weighed in, precise as always, with sound advice. “Retirement isn’t the end of your life; it’s the start of the next one. When you’re 40, think of what your interests are going to be when you retire and start cultivating them.” Both musicians agree, this is a pretty cool gig. “Now I want to perform in front of a crowd of a thousand people,” smiled Ray. Ralph added, “Life can be a great adventure after retirement.”
