SNAP HAPPY

A lot of our life at the SOURCE is spent sitting in the office looking at blank Word documents. Most of the rest of the time is spent looking at full Word documents, trying to find mstakes. So it’s always exciting to get out and shoot the cover, without doubt the best fun we have all month. This time we took Holy Vessels out to East Grinstead and threw them in a pond. It took the best part of a day to get there, pull on waders, get the rescue diver in her suit, set up the lights and tempt the band into the very cold water. A few hours in, after a bit of stress finding makeshift wires to sync up the lights (too boring to describe further) we looked over at Kenny Mc Cracken who, under his ‘tache, was smiling. “Is there anything you’d rather be doing?” we asked him. “Nothing at all,” he exclaimed. And that’s why we never use press shots on our covers. Not because Kenny’s photos are better than anything we get sent – even though they are. Or even because we don’t want to use tired old pictures. It’s not even because we normally get bands before they have decent pictures, though that’s often true too. It’s simply because we love doing them. Thanks for indulging us.

CITY COLLEGE

WE DO LIKE CROQUET, AH

Immerse yourself in Alice’s whimsical Wonderland and play a game of croquet on the lawn, just like the queen. From 21st July to 31st August, players can make their way around the lawns of Preston Manor, using their flamingo mallet to cheat to their heart’s content. Die-hard Alice fans will be climbing over each other to have a go, and at £10 for an hour long game it won’t cost you your head either. Note: the gardeners will not be pleased if you attempt to paint the roses.

SOMETHING OLD

A firm favourite in Brighton, The Vintage Fair just keeps getting bigger and better. Down at the Corn Exchange this month, as well as 50 traders there’s also a hair salon, offering styling and make up, and a vintage tea party. Besides clothes and shoes, traders will be offering homeware and jewellery, providing an opportunity to wear authentic clothing right down to your knickers. If it all gets a bit much, console yourself with a delicious homemade cupcake and admire the style on display. The Vintage Fair takes place Sun 29th, 10am-4pm.

ONE FOR SORROW, 20 FOR JOY

Magpie Recycling on Lewes Road have been reducing, reusing and recycling the city’s waste for 20 years. The co-operative celebrates its anniversary on Sat 14th with the Magpie Eco Festival, next to its flagship Shabitat warehouse in Saunders Park. CITY OF DIVERSITY

Brighton and Hove’s annual celebration of diversity, People’s Day, returns to the centre of town on Sat 14th. Spreading from Jubilee Square and New Road, across to Pavilion Gardens and Victoria Gardens, People’s Day encompasses nine themed zones. As well as raising awareness of the broad culture and history of the city, the free festival includes live music, workshops in dance, art, drumming and more, and a mixture of sporting activities, from electronic gaming to table tennis and football.

OLYMPIC MARATHON

The Olympic Flame comes to town on 16th July, with two major celebratory events taking place to welcome it: Same Sky’s free family oriented fun day in Hove Park, and the Rizzle Kicks-featuring official shenanigans in the Hove Cricket Ground. Plans are shaping up for the conclusion of the London 2012 fandango on 9th September too, including a full afternoon of music on Brighton Bandstand. Performers interested in this national Bandstand Marathon event should contact arts organisation Superact on 01823 332413.

FUNFAIR

A few years ago clubs and venues in Brighton were dropping like flies, but we’re hearing news of several new places opening. FunFair on Kings Road is the first to open – a freak show-themed affair from the London team behind the award-winning Bathhouse. Visually, FunFair promises “optical illusion hallways, hidden passages, secret sideshows and entertaining spectacles”. The delightfully curious sounding club opens on Friday 6th.

LA CHOZA

Replacing Seasons Café in Gloucester Road, La Choza (‘The Shack’) is bringing authentic Mexican street food right into the heart of North Laine, for taking away, or eating indoors or out. Licensed for all your tequila needs, we give thanks to their Day Of The Dead logo that this brightly coloured café has arrived to deliver unto us pulled pork tacos, beef tostadas, and those sweet tasty churros we can’t get enough of. Mmm, churros.

BYTE ME

For those unafraid of the accelerated modern age, Byte Me is a new club night celebrating digital culture in art, visuals and music. The Byte Me collective includes coders and hackers, as well as DJs and performers, and their launch show at the Blind Tiger on the 12th packs in a diverse bill, including guests Boss Kite (Donkey Pitch) and Bitbin (Skint/Under 5’s). Audience participation comes via a mass improv Smart Phone Orchestra, arranged by Bunty from Beatabet.

VELO VITALITY

These cycle specialists sell a range of bikes and accessories that can only be described as lovely. With nine years in the business in the UK and Canada, Velo

PAGE 6

Vitality has connections to source stylish two wheelers (and the odd unicycle), parts and clothing from both sides of the Atlantic. Their shop is up on Trafalgar Street, meaning you can break in your new bike by zooming excitedly away down the hill, and test out the gears by trying to pedal back up again.

THE TROLL’S PANTRY

Apologies to our veggie friends, but, by heck, do the SOURCE office love burgers. Well, the most voluble of us do. The Troll’s Pantry is a mobile catering business, parked up by The Bugle Inn on St Martin’s Street on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Their beefburgers are made from local cattle, specifically a herd of grass-fed English Longhorn, served with home made ketchups and sauces. Not sure what goes into their ‘Troll’s Stinky Breath Burger’, but we sure still want one.

THE HOP POLES/ CRAFT BEER CO

The past year has seen Middle Street boozer The Hop Poles change its identity more often than Howard Marks. After becoming The Spotted Dog, then the Cask Pub & Kitchen, it is back under The Hop Poles name (which, let’s face it, everyone still called it anyway) with new tenants Indigo Pub Co. taking the reins. Not pausing for breath, Cask owners the Craft Beer Co have moved up the hill and reopened the former Florist/PV on Upper North Street.

MINGLER CORPSUS

So, there’s a new art space up from Brighton Station on Terminus Road. It might be called Mingler Corpsus, or Mungler Copsys, or Mingles Calypsus, or quite probably all and none of the above. Either they’re playing fast and loose with bourgeois concepts like spelling and identity, or they’ve been inhaling the paint fumes too long. A quick trawl through their baffling rainbow nightmare website neuefrothkunsthalle.com leaves us none the wiser. Take a look and be both dazed and confused.

OTIS GIBBS

JAM BAXTER / SCRIBE-TRIBE

PROFESSOR ELEMENTAL

If you fancy something a little bit unusual on the first Tuesday of the month, we recommend heading upstairs at The Hope and being blown away by the live hip-hop nights of Slip Jam:B, for our favourite price of free. This month the stage is taken by highly acclaimed rap royalty Jam Baxter and local four-man MC gang Scribe-Tribe. Expect lots of local rappers to have their say too, with freestyles from the audience also encouraged. (JMM)

His feud with Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer (who has an LP out this month) seemingly on the wane, chap hop adventurer Elemental parks his steampunk-powered charabanc up by Preston Circus tonight. He’s best known for a song about tea, but those not accustomed to his blend of rap beat and English elite might prefer something stronger to fully appreciate the performance. Orchestral goth punks Birdeatsbaby, fresh from an extensive US tour, and comedy rap collective Sanity Valve complete an eclectic line-up. (AP)

Before they up sticks and head off to DJ alongside the twin delights of steam engines and indiepop at Derbyshire’s Indietracks Festival, our own Another Sunny Day and Riots Not Diets have got together to put on this warm-up show. Seattle’s Orca Team, making their UK debut tonight, play sparse beach party guitar pop, while Cardiff’s Joanna Gruesome up the noise quotient with their giddy take on My Bloody Valentine’s sugar rush. All aboard! (SH)

OTIS GIBBS

Prince Albert Weds 4th

Writer of songs and teller of tales – the hard-travelled folk troubadour Otis Gibbs makes a welcome return to town, complete with a whole bunch of new songs from his latest album ‘Harder Than Hammered Hell’. Always an inspirational live performer, Otis has spent the past 15 years travelling the world and documenting his experiences in song, leading him to be described as sounding like Woody Guthrie after an allnight bender – which is most certainly a good thing. Support comes from the highly rated Boss Caine. (IC)

BURN THE FLEET Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar Sun 8th

Last seen in Brighton at The Great Escape festival, Southampton’s answer to Thrice return to the city as headliners. Despite forming back in 2008, the band’s debut album only hit the shelves earlier in the year - the shelves of newsagents that is, after their long-awaited ‘The Modern Shape’ was given away as a cover-mount on Rock Sound magazine. Tickets for Burn The Fleet’s show may not be free but they’ll only cost you the same as a glossy magazine anyway. (AJM)

THE BLACK TWIG PICKERS Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar Tues 10th

They’ve got a name that sounds like they found it using an internet blues band name generator, and the checked shirts, moustaches, banjos and fiddles you’d expect too. The Black Twig Pickers are your archetypal old-time blues band, but having released records for over a decade now, it’s clear they’re doing it right. Latest single ‘Yellow Cat’/‘You’ll Never Miss Your Mama’ is a truly traditional foray into deep rural America, so click your heels and let yourselves be transported away. (JMM)

KIMYA DAWSON

Haunt Tues 10th

Although reasonably well known for her partnership with Adam Green in the endearingly scatological Moldy Peaches, Kimya Dawson’s generous songwriting talents received the broader acclaim they deserved when several of her songs appeared on the Grammy winning soundtrack to Juno (thanks to the clued up suggestion of its star, Ellen Page). Dawson’s warm-hearted performances are perfect entertainment for all ages, although tonight’s show is for over-14s, so unfortunately the littler kids are gonna miss out this time. (SH)

Back for another night of shit-kickin’ honky-tonking, ex-Scorcher Ringenberg always delivers a blistering performance to a devoted crowd. He’s a funny, compelling storyteller and often provides a poignant history lesson along with the cornball hokum. The Scorchers reunited for a new album recently but with no new solo releases this should be a romp through his sterling backcatalogue. It looks like he’s left Farmer Jason at home this time so no afternoon kids show for your little Punk Rock Skunks. (SC)

SHAM 69

Concorde 2 Fri 13th

Headlining this month’s instalment of The Outer Church is Some Truths, one of several alter egos of Ralph Cumbers, the Hackney musician best known as Bass Clef. As Some Truths, Cumbers explores deep analogue beeps, bloops and tones, and he’s joined at tonight’s evening of esoteric electronics by These Feathers Have Plumes (London sound artist Andie Brown, once of Cindytalk), regular Outer Church visitor Kemper Norton and Brighton’s Wrong Signals. (SH)

After receiving surprisingly high praise from the likes of Mark Perry on the BBC’s recent Punk Britannia series, perhaps it’s time to re-evaluate Hersham’s Cockney cowboys. Blighted by their misappropriation by the far right, who saw the band’s disenfranchised working class fanbase as an easy recruitment pool, Sham 69 nonetheless produced some classic singles such as ‘Borstal Breakout’ and ‘Angels With Dirty Faces’. Jimmy Pursey’s back on board so lace up your Docs and get down the front. No gobbing though, please. (SC)

FUTURES

SOURCE NEW MUSIC

Haunt Weds 11th

Originally scheduled for April, Futures postponed their tour after leaving the comfort of their major signing at Mercury Records and setting up their own label, Indigo. Whether their decision will pay off in the long term remains to be seen, but for now, fans will surely be thirsty just to hear songs from the band’s delayed frustratingly debut ‘Karma Satellite’ played live. There’s an impressive trio of opening acts too, with the bill boasting Don Broco, Natives and Loose Lips. (AJM)

Suited lovers of the sweeping pop epic Sweet Sweet Lies headline this month’s SOURCE showcase. Guided by the songwriting hands of Dominic Von Trapp and Michael Hayes, the quintet released their string and brass adorned debut ‘The Hare, The Hound And The Tortoise’ in the spring. The album won a four star review in Uncut, tagged with the epithet “Brighton’s premier evil wedding band”, which sums up their rousing line in swinging bitterness neatly. (SH)

NITE JEWEL

MAL WEBB

Latest MusicBar Tues 17th

Brighton has plenty of slightly deranged musical show-offs of its own, but none tick quite as many boxes as Australian Mal Webb. Swapping between different instruments over the course of a song? Check. Using innovative vocal techniques such as beatboxing and synth-like ‘sideways yodeling’? Check. Throwing a loop pedal called Derek into the mix to perform all of the above simultaneously? Yep. Boasting a falsetto local drag queens would kill for, Webb’s blend of vocal gymnastics and comedy defies easy categorisation. (AP)

NITE JEWEL

Green Door Store Tues 17th

Otherwise known as LA producer Ramona Gonzalez and band, Nite Jewel is the creator of sultry, smooth beats and soft vocals. First sliding onto the scene in 2009 with some dreamy covers, she’s attracted a lot more attention lately with the addition of extra members, tighter production and a curbing of the leftfield qualities that define her earlier work. Nite Jewel’s album ‘One Second Of Love’ is a seductive pop record with synth influences that’s priming her for commercial success, but whether she can maintain her mysterious originality is another matter. (JMM)

HAGAR THE WOMB Prince Albert Sat 21st

When a band’s Wikipedia entry begins “Formed in London in 1980, in the toilets of the Wapping Anarchy Centre” it’s easy to pigeonhole them. In truth, Hagar The Womb boast a more fun, female and friendly approach than compatriots like Crass, garnering several indie chart hits and a Peel Session over their six-year career. Reunited a quarter-century later, their proto-riot grrrl (dis)harmonies, undimmed exuberance and DIY mantra could easily inspire tonight’s attendees to form their own bands. The toilets are thataway. Expect tattooed ladies, extra tall quiffs and some mad double bass. Throw in a barbeque and what more could a hell-bound heart desire? (TT)

THOMAS WHITE

INSPIRAL CARPETS

Thomas White is set to make this summer one to remember by performing several very special gigs. This first appearance sees the Brighton artist play the entirety of his debut album ‘I Dream Of Black’. So if you’re a fan of his 2008 release, don’t miss the opening night of his Green Door Store residency. If you’re a fan of his later albums, you’ll have to be more patient, but why not take advantage of the chance to hear his entire discography? (AJM)

Prior to hitting the bigtime at the heights of Madchester fever, Oldham’s Inspiral Carpets were true 1960s garage heads, covering classics like ’96 Tears’ and soaking their own compositions in Clint Boon’s swirling Farfisa organ. Following the departure of singer Tom Hingley last year, the Inspirals have reunited with original vocalist Stephen Holt (who had left after debut EP ‘Plane Crash’ for the short lived Rainkings) for this tour of hits and new material. HOLY VESSELS COUNTRY ROCK ‘N’ ROLL TO PURIFY YOUR SOUL WORDS BY JAMES KENDALL PHOTO BY KENNY MC CRACKEN

ASSISTED BY MATTHEW RING, JOSH REDFERN, NIKKI ACOTT, JAMES KENDALL THANKS TO YOGHURTROOMS.COM FOR THE USE OF THEIR POND

Wandering through last summer’s Playgroup Festival, the sunshine warming our skin as we ambled through the fields, we found ourselves humming along to the sounds coming from one of the tents. So joyous was the noise we turned on our heels and headed toward what we thought was a band playing a cover of one of our favourite songs, maybe a half forgotten Neil Young number. But when we got inside it was Holy Vessels playing one of their own compositions – a song that we’d only heard once before. It was then that we realised how good they were. Not only had they nailed that country rock sound, they’d also written songs that were so catchy they lodged in your brain as instant classics.

PAGE 16

‘Springtime Bloom’, their debut single, is one of those songs. Guitars slide, pianos tinkle and basslines walk as Frank tells a beautiful story to lift the spirits. It could have come from an early Wilco album and it still would have stood out. “It’s a love song about two people on the South Downs falling in love in the summer,” explains bassist Mavo as he strips down ready to be baptised with much more enthusiasm than you’d expect. “But I wasn’t the one falling in love at the time so for me it’s more like a hymn to the English countryside. We were talking about Stand By Me on the way down here, that summer holiday feeling of, ‘this is going to last forever’. To me it’s about the possibilities of being out in the open space.”

they were travelling on had recently bought a farm. Before long Iain Harvie – the former guitarist with Del Amitri, who has been a big supporter of the Vessels for years – had packed his studio into a van and was setting it up in a disused barn. For two weeks the boys moved into a caravan and recorded their debut. “I think that you can hear on the album that it was recorded in a lambing shed,” says Tommy figuratively. “That’s when we started properly experimenting with the sound of it,” says Frank. “That’s what shaped everything.” While the first half of the album has the clean melodies and country rock stylings that we’ve come to expect from seeing them live, as the second side progresses the album becomes quite wigged out, almost like psychedelic rock’n’roll in places. “The beginning of the album comes from the early demos when we were listening to loads of country,” explains Mavo. “Gram Parsons, The Byrds, Johnny Cash…” “Who’s that geezer with his dog?” asks Frank. “Jim Reeves,” answers Mavo. “As it took so long for us to get the final line-up of the band together we’ve played the songs quite a lot, so we were ready to try other things. So the second side of the album is kinda epic psychedelic rock. I think that was a result of almost being bored.” “And Tommy getting an organ,” adds Frank.

SINGLE: ‘Springtime Bloom’, free download Mon 2nd WEB: holyvessels.co.uk LIVE: Green Door Store, Tues 24th

“The reason we were talking about Stand By Me was Grills worrying about getting leeches on his knob going in this pond,” laughs keyboard player Tommy as they lower themselves into the icy water. It’s the first of three singles that the band are releasing through their website for free, on the journey to their album in October. ‘Last Orders At The Marshal Arms’ is a stunning debut, especially when you realise it’s self-funded and released and, fittingly for a country rock outfit, recorded in a barn on a farm. While following in the footsteps of Mumford & Sons on the River Rat Pack tour, they discovered that the guy whose barge

While they were recording Iain had found Tommy something else to play, another old organ in one of the barns, covered in birdshit, and got his head into the wires in the back to reprogram it. They even recorded some of the guitars through an industrial wood chipper. Despite the Del Amitri man’s pop sensibilities he wasn’t afraid to experiment. “If you follow the record from start to finish it’s almost chronological,” explains Mavo. “It sits really nicely that way. It almost ends on a cliffhanger – what’s going to happen next? To me it feels like we’ve got to a point where we can start making records. Getting this album done was getting our shit together. Now we can do it properly.” But how are the songs so catchy, especially those in the first, more country part of the LP? Mavo reckons it’s from growing up listening to pop music all their lives. “Once we heard a good hook we jumped on it,” he says. “I don’t think there’s any bullshit on the album, there’s no filler. It’s wall to wall hooks and big tunes. I don’t think we knew how to make anything fancy.” “We had quite a lot of rules when we started,” adds Frank. “No hi hats, and if you’d already put the message across, don’t put it across again.” Apparently that economy left many of songs between 90 seconds and a couple of minutes long, leading Iain to ask, ‘Why are all your songs: verse, chorus and then the end?’ Mavo is keen to stress that not only would the experimentation not have been anywhere near as successful without their producer, the whole thing might never have got anywhere near happening without his support. “He mixed the demos that we did in the live room at the Brunswick, he was coming to our gigs and doing our sound, all off his own bat, with his own money,” explains the bassist. “He didn’t ask us for anything. He was the only person who was up for it enough to sit in a caravan for two weeks with us lot not knowing what we were doing. If it wasn’t for him we’d still be scratching our arses in Brighton Electric.” Maybe that’s true, but we’d probably end up whistling along while they did it.

AEREO

Green Door Store Fri 6th

Teen Creeps’ Aereo is always fun – great dance music from the synthy electro disco DJs and an excellent live band to boot. This month – following turns by Blood Orange, Bass Drum Of Death and The Mysterons – woozy pop band Yoofs will shuffle, hoods up, from Bournemouth, a city that’s currently having a bit of a revival thanks to Bos Angeles. Previously known as AC Slater, their sloppy drums and lo-fi aesthetics make them sound like a gloriously stoned summer’s day hanging out with friends. (JK)

CROSSTOWN REBELS TOUR Haunt Fri 6th

DAMIAN LAZARUS

SHOGUN AUDIO

Audio Fri 6th

If their recent single ‘Light In The Dark’ is anything to go by then Spectrasoul’s eagerly awaited debut album promises to be a harmonious blend of rich chocolatey basslines, silky vocal samples and transcendent chords, all compiled with stunning arrangements. These two Brightonians have been stamping their mark on modern day drum’n’bass since their first release and their energetic sets always have the crowd crowing for more. In support is D Bridge and Icicle with SP:MC on vocal duties. (ZC)

TIM MASON

Coalition Sat 7th

Before he took his place on the throne of underground house Damian Lazarus was the golden ears behind legendary electroclash label City Rockers, home to Felix Da Housecat. It seemed unlikely that Crosstown Rebels would eclipse that, but with releases from Jamie Jones, Maceo Plex and Art Department it’s become one of the key labels in the new deep house scene. This ‘In Time’ album tour stops at Moody Disco with the main man joined by Amirali playing live, and Droog and Russ Yallop on the decks. (JK)

Like a conquering hero Tim Mason returns. The Brighton boy has been round the world and back again over the last year or so, having been picked up by Steve Angello’s Size after the ex-Swedish House Mafioso heard his massive electro trance monster ‘The Moment’. Most of the biggest DJs have given him love, including David Guetta, Tiesto and Laidback Luke, and in addition to his second smash ‘Anima’ he’s found time to remix Moby, Guetta and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Expect his set to be filled with huge riffs, big hands-in-air melodies and snare rolls as his hometown fans fanfare his return. (JK)

JUNGLE ALLIANCE

HOT 8 BRASS BAND

Volks Fri 6th

Jungle Alliance have been putting on some of Brighton’s most fun, up-for-it club nights for a year now, and they’re having a birthday party to celebrate. Primarily a record label run by producer duo Dialect & Kosine, Jungle Alliance are committed to bringing the best in jungle, dancehall, drum’n’bass, reggae and tear-out, and their birthday party is also for the committed, with music for a solid nine hours. Ed Solo’s headlining the event, and support comes from a multitude of DJs, including locals Axiomatt and King Spinner. (JMM)

These guys have been busier than a dog with peanut butter on its bollocks. As well as appearing in David ‘The Wire’ Simon’s HBO series Treme and getting Banksy to allow them to use his work in their latest video, Hot 8 Brass Band have been writing material for their new album set to be released on Tru Thoughts later this year. It’s not every Saturday night that trumpets, tubas and saxophones take over the seafront so we’ll be there, dancing, jigging, make a right br-ass of ourselves. All hail the second line. (ZC)

CAJMERE

Audio Fri 13th

It seems like only yesterday that Schtumm was a crazy night of mates running around a Moroccan restaurant basement in wigs while Radio Slave and Maxxi Soundsytem played underground house music. But five years later and second wave Chicago god Cajmere is taking to the decks. He’s best know for his techno records as Green Velvet (“cameras ready, prepare to flash!”) but his house tracks like ‘Percolator’ and ‘Brighter Days’ are cast iron classics. It’s this persona that’s producing the goods right now, so we could get some new gems previewed. (JK)

EROL ALKAN

Digital Sat 14th

No, you’re not dreaming, there really is a Phantasy takeover at Digital this month. No matter how many times we’ve seen him, Erol Alkan’s sets always feel fresh, leaving us sweaty and inspired. But we’re equally as excited about seeing Daniel Avery aka StopMakingMe whose ‘The Need Electric’ EP came out on Phantasy in June. His sound features 80s cosmic drones and dark synths, swaggering alongside minimal techno and deep house. We can’t wait, and neither can all the other electronic enthusiasts in Brighton, so book that ticket, fast. (ZC)

CHURCH BRIGHTON LAUNCH

GRANDMASTER FLASH

Synkro and Fantastic Mr Fox on one bill means this Friday the 13th is far from unlucky. The former’s minimal 8-bit ditties are understated and pensive without ever being plaintive; fragile percussion is dappled over warm swelling synth-lines, often with furry static creeping in and out like the crackle of old vinyl. Fantastic Mr Fox’s subtly jubilant productions mix delicately optimistic melodies with jiggy 2-step arrangements to a similarly emotive effect. If you can’t tell, we’re damn excited about this one. (ZC)

Widely hailed as the first person to use turntables to crossfade (though this is highly disputed), Grandmaster Flash has nonetheless been considered one of the legends of hip hop from his 70s heyday with The Furious Five. Now in his mid50s, he is regularly credited with lifetime achievement awards and remains one of the hardest touring DJs in the scene. If you want to see a true innovator and someone who’s helped shape the music scene as it is today, this really isn’t to be missed. (JMM)

Life Fri13th

CONGO NATTY Concorde 2 Fri 13th

‘Just Keep Rockin’’ and ‘Street Tuff’, Rebel MC’s late 80s hits with Double Trouble, were dismissed as lightweight by many in the UK hip hop scene at the time, but the Rebel went on to prove his credentials with some thrilling dancehall collaborations that helped lay the foundations of UK jungle. Under his Congo Natty alias, he hosts this quality night of deep reggae sounds. King Tubby’s Sound System and Prince Fatty are among those keeping the beats sharp and the bass low. (SH)

Rockers turned ravers The Qemists return to their hometown after touring their spectacular live show around Europe. The Qemists’ cut-loose sound fuses their rock influences with drum’n’bass traditions; grungy basslines squelch and stomp under punchy drum patterns and anthemic vocal chants, propelling the audience into a hybrid dance of headbanging and ecstatic raving. Easily one of the best live d’n’b bands on the planet, they recently announced their third album for Ninja Tune, so we may be treated to some new tracks too. (ZC)

FREEBASS

Concorde Sat 21st

Freebass is the gift that just keeps on giving. To celebrate Mr Natural’s Birthday (Happy Bassday old man) they’ve got Jumping Jack Frost touching down and rinsing out a summer selection of slammers. For anyone who’s owned a One Nation tape-pack that’s enough to ensure their attendance; for those of our readers born in the nineties, Mr Frost is a jungle institution, a godfather of raves. We’d be happy just to kiss his hand in reverence, but it’d probably be weird, so dancing till sunrise will have to suffice. (ZC)

DANNY RAMPLING Coalition Sat 28th

Danny Rampling basically invented modern British clubbing. His Shoom night – inspired by his holiday to Ibiza with Paul Oakenfold, Johnny Walker and Nicky Holloway – introduced acid house to England and set the whole vibe for the Second Summer Of Love. These days the house he’s most interested in is the eco one he’s building as part of his property portfolio in Hastings, so grab this chance to see the semiretired legend while you can. He’s joined on this Superclub Classics night by Quadrant Park’s famed John Kelly. (JK)

DAVE MUMBLES ROCKABILLY MIGHT BE 60 YEARS OLD, BUT MORE IMPRESSIVELY BRIGHTON RUMBLE HAS ITS 10TH BIRTHDAY THIS MONTH WORDS AND PHOTO BY JAMES KENDALL

What is rockabilly and how is it different to rock’n’roll? Rockabilly is a name made up of two genres of music – rock’n’roll and hillbilly. It’s mainly early 50s American artists like Warren Smith, Sonny Burgess and Carl Perkins from record labels like Sun, MGM and Imperial, to name just a few. Rock’n’roll is mainly British and is often associated with the good ‘ole Teddy Boys and artists like Cliff Richard and Marty Wilde. Both scenes do enjoy each other’s music, especially artists such as Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and Gene Vincent.

world. You could bump into people from Scotland, Wales, London, France, Spain or Japan, as well as our loyal locals, in any given night. Why do you think Rumble has lasted for ten years? Variety is the spice of life so we like to introduce new performers, as well as putting on the valued, seasoned bands and DJs that everyone will watch time and again for their raw talent. The big thing that the Rumble is known for is live music. By keeping things fresh it keeps the crowds coming.

Is there still a good rockabilly scene in Brighton? Yeah, it’s healthy in Brighton at present with a lot of people getting into the retro scene and the music. New bands and clubs are starting nearly every NEXT EVENT: Sat 14th at Concorde month, which is great as it gives people WEB: facebook.com/brighton. the chance to hear what different DJs rumblerockabillyshow enjoy in the music. ROCKABILLY FEATURE: tinyurl.com/BrightonRockabilly What going on for the 10th Birthday? We’ve invited some of the best DJs and bands on the scene to help us celebrate. It’s hosted by me and Lucky Phil, and we have The Caezars and Doggone Honkabilly Band playing. On the DJ front we have the famous DJ Ronnie Dawson ‘Up Jumped The Devil’ Cosmic Keith from London’s Boston The Jiants ‘Tornado’ Arms rockabilly club, plus Little Carl Mickey Lee Lane ‘Senior Class’ and Be Bop Kaz. I’m planning the next Dale Wright ‘Dance With Me’ one for August bank holiday as a twoGene Vincent ‘Race With The Devil’ day event. Eddie Cash ‘Doing All Right’ Pat Cupp ‘Do Me No Wrong’ Do people come from out of town for Elvis Presley ‘One Sided Love Affair’ Rumble? You just play vinyl. Doesn’t that get expensive? Records do cost money but it is nice to come across a different record and introduce it to the crowd. Some original 45s can cost between £80 and £200 but some repros cost as little as £6. So everyone could use vinyl if they wanted, but some do choose CDs. Don’t you run out of records? Rockabilly is a passion and I’ve been playing the music for a long time, like so many other DJs on the scene. There’s always another track to play or you can play the flipside – they’re normally good tunes as well. What’s wrong with modern music? Nothing. Modern music is ok, I listen to the radio in the car or at home and I sing along with my daughter to pop music sometimes. But I do prefer Radio 2.

KATE SHIELDS FRIENDS AND OTHER ANIMALS: NOCTURNAL STUDIES OF SOME RARE SPECIES

Artist Residence July 27th – August 27th WORDS BY STUART HUGGETT

Long-term SOURCE readers will remember Kate Shields’ stunning cover painting of a butterfly-eyed Natasha Khan for our 2009 Bat For Lashes interview, the original of which hangs in the Caroline Of Brunswick. Since February, Kate has been the latest beneficiary of a six-month stint working within the Artist Residence hotel in Regency Square. Her residency concludes this month with the opening of her first solo show, ‘Friends And Other Animals’. The exhibition brings together colourful, wood mounted portraits of what Kate describes as, “some of the curious and wonderful people I have encountered whilst living in Brighton”. Kate’s circle includes some familiar Brighton faces, and their portraits are augmented with elements of other animals, from Disney baiting mouse ears to more of those vibrant butterflies. Each of the gentle juxtapositions reveals further layers of the personalities of Kate’s sitters, in an attractive mix of nature and humour.

EVENT: TREASURE TRACKS Secret Venues, secret dates throughout summer

Not that it needs it, but as ingenious promotional contrivances go, this one’s a corker. Your (free) ticket comes from one of three outlets in town - record stores Rounder and Resident, or Jubilee Library. On the ticket is a map to the gig’s location. The promised venues are weird and wonderful – June’s launch show was in the Booth Museum, in amongst the glorious taxidermy that time forgot. The treasure at the end of your intrepid journey is an intimate performance from Catherine Ireton, the Irish-born Belle & Sebastian collaborator and main focus of God Help The Girl. (MB)

EVENT: THE GEEKEST LINK Caroline Of Brunswick Sun 1st

This month’s geek-friendly instalment of the Caroline’s sci-fi and fantasy quiz includes specialist rounds on births, marriages and deaths (within the genre, of course), your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man, hit 90s serial Babylon 5 and author Neil Gaiman. Now, without wishing to pre-empt the questions, Gaiman’s a local lad made good, so there’s no excuses not to do your research and score highly here. Imagine the shame if he turns up and marks your answers. (SH)

FILM: FOUND FOOTAGE FESTIVAL Komedia Sun 1st

If you’ve ever found yourself mired in a particularly weird YouTube marathon, you’d do well to remember that most of the detritus of the video age never even makes it online. The curators of the Found Footage Festival have spent 20 years collecting this stuff, fishing home movies out of bins and

combing junk stores for obscure VHS curios. The hilarious and bizarre fruits of their obsession are presented in this comedy roadshow, now touring the UK for the first time. Just when you thought the 1980s couldn’t get any more damn ridiculous. (BB)

THEATRE: GLORIOUS Little Theatre Tues 3rd – Sat 7th

Without mentioning those reality talent shows you obviously never watch, we all know how compelling truly appalling ineptitude can be. As 1940s wannabe opera singer Florence Foster Jenkins perhaps knew, it’s a dastardly dish best served with bucketloads of self-delusion, a trick this screeching pre-autotune loon used to gain a devoted following. The Little tells the tale of how her farcical flame eventually attracted thousands, all keen to watch and hear her tuneless train wreck of a voice. (BM)

MINICLICK

Old Market Tues 3rd/Mon 23rd

If you’re one of the few photography fanatics that hasn’t crammed into the Old Market bar for the increasingly popular Miniclick talks, you have two bites of the cherry this month. First, Hungry Eye editor Grant Scott talks to the inspiring teacher of Coventry University’s totally free undergraduate photography courses, Jonathan Worth. On Monday 23rd, Portrait Salon, the second chance alternative to the Taylor Wessing Prize, will bring down five snappers chosen last year, including Brighton’s own Jean-Luc Brouard. (JK)

Originally premiered at Cannes and intended as a series of snapshots of contemporary Cuba, the line-up includes star turns from The Hunger Games’ Josh Hutcherson and Daniel Brühl, who’s probably best known for his role as a German warrior in Inglourious Basterds. Audio’s screening adds a selection of music from Cuba and an after-party, and your ticket includes a free mojito. (BM)

TALK: ZINEB SEDIRA Lighthouse Thurs 5th

French-Algerian-born artist Zineb Sedira is perhaps best known for Floating Coffins, a hauntingly funereal installation of 14 screens showing abandoned ships decaying along the coast of Mauritania, left in an ecologically-unkind rot by often-doomed emigrants desperate to escape to Europe. It illuminated Sedira’s real skill at subtly reflecting powerful themes, explored further in subsequent exhibitions at the Hayward, as part of the British Art Show 6 and internationally. She discusses her more recent work and her creative processes here. (BM)

COMEDY: LLOYD LANGFORD AND PAT CAHILL/ TIM SHISHODIA Upstairs At Three And Ten Fri 6th

If all the Jubilee stuff has left you longing for something a bit more quirkily cutting-edge, try three rising stars offering cynicism and daftness (Shishodia); physical humour, tunes and bizarreness (Cahill); and “a sort of picaresque shaggy dog story” (Langford). Calm your tingling excitement and douse yourself with an ice bucket, because it’s all simply a small part of a monster month at the T+T which includes no less than nine Fringe previews and an Irish sketch show. Like, awesome. (BM)

EVENT: SUMMER OF SONIC Hove Centre Sat 7th

If you’ve ever stayed up until dawn yelling at a little blue hedgehog’s failure to leap across a pit of spikes, Hove has the event for you. Summer Of Sonic is a convention celebrating all things Sonic The Hedgehog, with guests from the worlds of gaming and comics, and live music from rock duo/SEGA soundtrackers Crush 40. Gamers have been gobbling up the free tickets faster than a supersonic spikeball, so head to the Summer Of Sonic website quick as you can. (SH)

COMEDY: ALEXIS DUBUS Caroline Of Brunswick Mon 16th

You need Alexis Dubus in your life. Under his Marcel Lucont alias, the vin rouge addict has given women lessons in love and men enough retributive slapdowns to make any alpha male wince, delivered with a winning mix of ceaseless Gallic arrogance and irresistibly awful puns. Lucont’s scornful return is among the highlights of 10 Edinburgh previews upstairs at the Caz during a month which kicks off with Mark ‘Joe Mangle’ Little and also has former Edinburgh Newcomer winner Roisin Conaty. ART: LOST TOYS OF THE IMAGINARIUM

Old Market Tues 17th

If you’re currently sketching out costume designs for Playgroup, this warm-up event could be right up your street. Jake Spicer, the Lord Of Life Drawing, is joining Playgroup’s Flick Nicoll to turn a tent at that festival into a lustrous Victorian setting full of things to draw that they’re intriguingly calling ‘wonderments’. This preview fundraiser sees marionettes and toy soldiers pose for your pencils inside a life-sized paper theatre. There’s a suggested donation of £3-8 which goes to making the main event at Playgroup happen, which seems more than fair. (JK)

ART: PING PONG Moksha Café until Thurs 19th

An original collaboration between three Brighton artists and designers. Simon Bottrell says he’s into graphics and retro ads from way back when “the suits were snappy and the slogans were happy”, recreating bygone optimism in digital collages on reclaimed wood. He’s accompanied by Lulu Allison, who creates photos, site-specific collage and installations with a nod to massive sculptures, and Pierre Hale, a painter who balances his tendency to spend long periods revisiting each work with a desire to make organic pieces. Fancy yourself as the next big name in digital art? In that case, head down to Brighton Museum for this chance to work with established artists, creating pieces that will be showcased in the exhibition rooms of the Museum itself. Open to all ages and abilities, it’s worth making the most of this free opportunity to brag to all your mates about the artists you’ve met. (TT)

THEATRE: ROAD TO EDINBURGH

From the bizarre to the brilliant in less time than it takes to get through the North Laine, Road To Edinburgh begins with a benefit night to send a nude performer to Scotland, followed by an acclaimed piece of dance and physical theatre based on The Seven Deadly Sins. CRITIC WORDS BY STUART HUGGETT, LIZZI JAMESON, JESSICA MARSHALL MCHATTIE

ALBUM: ARCHITECTS Daybreaker (Century Media Records)

After their disappointing, microwave-friendly fourth album, metalcore Brightonians Architects have returned to their roots and produced ‘Daybreaker’. With a much higher metal content, the record comes laced with distant piano, faint tinkles and some beautifully controlled aggression as the band explore political and religious issues. There’s still a slice of the mainstream, as frontman Sam Carter plays with clean vocals, solemn whispers and white-knuckle screams of rage. ‘Daybreaker’ may not get them much radio play, but Brighton should be proud. (LJ)

SINGLE: CONOR MAYNARD Vegas Girl (Parlophone)

We’re handing over to YouTube comments for this one, the true measure of an artist. “This song is BEAST.” “His voice is like a combination of fergie and jesus.” “Orgasm of my ears, Chile Loves Conor!” “His songs are swaggie!” “MY OVERIES ARE READY TO BE EXPLODED!” “I preferred him when he did his covers when his voice had more meaning.” “Dislike? You’re an alien.” “This was released on my birthday… Coincedence? I THINK NOT!” “VAGAS GIRL!!!” His fans are Conor Mayniacs, and they’re zany to the max... (SH)

SINGLE: FRAGILE CREATURES Dear Michael / She Makes Me Nervous (DNV Music)

A couple of melodically rich guitar tunes make up this double A-side from Brighton quartet Fragile Creatures. ‘Dear Michael’ is the pick of the pair, with its gentle layers of soft organ, piano

and vocal harmonies, although the lyrics paint a more disturbing picture of abuse and death. ‘She Makes Me Nervous’ starts off with a promising wash of bright country colours, but quickly speeds up into a rather less fragile, straightforward jolly jam of a knees-up. Some good stuff in here though. (SH)

ALBUM: VOLUME CONTRAST BRILLIANCE (BIMM)

With colleges in Bristol and Dublin now under the BIMM umbrella, there’s a broader pool of student talent to draw on for their annual compilation album. On the basis of these 16 submissions, the BIMM’s investment in the West Country is paying off, with several of the Bristol groups scoring highly on skill and invention. Authors’ shoegaze electronics and New Palace Talkies’ oddball folk arrangements are especially noteworthy. Come on Brighton, rise to the challenge, you’ve got competition here. (SH)

ALBUM: MEDICINE AND DUTY Scorps (Foolproof Projects)

Medicine And Duty’s eighth album finds the trio continuing down their idiosyncratic path of downbeat electronic improv. Drummer Andy Pyne’s kit work runs from nailed down certainty to loose percussive scatterings, while bandmates Matt Colegate and Jack Cooper ride on top with a trunkful of radioactive synths, deep bass and indistinct vocal mutterings and interjections. At one moment, ‘Scorps’ sounds like unearthed rehearsal tapes from a dank post punk bunker, at the next, some extra terrestrial dubstep groove. (SH)

YANNAH VALDEVIT

EP: JAKE MACKAY

SINGLE: FEAR OF MEN

The fiercely independent Overhead Wires label talks a good DIY fight, although their roster is generally far from spiky, and easily accessible. Guitarist Jake Mackay’s generous, six track EP is one of the label’s strongest recent releases. Mackay’s soft songcraft floats between English folk and a kind of northern country music, and benefits from some sympathetic musical contributions from his bandmates in The Long Goodbye . (SH)

Fear Of Men’s second 7” revisits a luminous highlight from last year’s Sex Is Disgusting tape. Jessica Weiss’ hazy vocals swim in and out of focus among the tide of shifting, backwards guitars on the understated ‘Green Sea’, but it all comes together for the “I swear I wouldn’t go, the coastal shelf” hookline. The brighter B-side ‘Born’ lacks some of ‘Green Sea’s emotional undertow, but its accumulating layers of giddy guitars and cooing harmonies are a lot more immediate. (SH)

Clouds Come Over (Overhead Wires)

ALBUM: THE GALLEONS

(self released)

Helmed by songwriter Ben Brockett, a nautical theme informs every corner of The Galleons’ debut, from the Fortune Of War sleeve photos to the recurring oceanic lyrical imagery. The six-piece group embellishes their attractive, folky compositions with sprinklings of dappled piano, pattering drums and lilting guitar flows, with vocal duties shared between the reserved tones of Brockett and his equally hushed singer partner Beth Chesser. Such indulgent melancholy suits a storm-lashed winter’s night, staring out to sea. (SH)

ALBUM: POPPY PEREZZ We Are Yours (Beach Hut Records)

Some bands can make the world seem like a sunnier place even when it’s been raining for weeks, and Poppy Perezz is one of them. On this debut, Poppy’s airy vocal melodies lilt above a festival-esque backdrop of jazzy gypsy pop, singing songs about love, longing and, er, a space antelope. They’re not predictable, with the soft, meandering ‘My Heart’ followed by the trip-hop inspired, synth-based ‘World Embracing’, but all the songs are bound together by feather-light harmonies, making for a very pleasant, relaxing album. (JMM)

SINGLE: YANNAH VALDEVIT Gotta Keep Me Goin’ / Pick Flowers (Tru Thoughts)

Tru Thoughts’ latest signing is Croatian-born Yannah Valdevit, and after listening to her debut single, you’ll realise what all the internet hype is about. Primarily a singer-songwriter, but with fingers in the pies of production, bass music and experimentation, Valdevit is far from an ordinary songstress. This double A-side features the smooth ‘Gotta Keep Me Goin’’, but it’s the flipside ‘Pick Flowers’ that really stands out, with strong influences of house and bass. This is the first release from her forthcoming album, produced by label-mate Zed Bias. (JMM)

Green Sea (Sexbeat)

SINGLE: LOVEPARK

How Do I See?/Shudder (self released)

Things are happening for Lovepark, with Channel 4 picking them out of this year’s Great Escape line-up to appear on their highlights show. The Brighton via Burgess Hill boys capitalise on the exposure with this debut 7”, pairing two warm examples of their clean-lined guitar pop. There’s something about ‘How Do I See?’s soaring, skylark vocals that puts us in mind of cult Britpop act Geneva, while ‘Shudder’ ups the tempo and complexity with some intricate, trebly disco patterns. Worth keeping an ear to. (SH)

SINGLE: MIRRORS Hourglass (self released)

Mirrors are still hunkered down in the studio recording their second album, and ‘Hourglass’ is their latest download missive from the sessions. Its arcing sheets of burnished synths, treated guitar and liquid rhythms fold together to create an uplifting counterpoint to the doomed desperation of James New’s lyrics. Companion piece ‘Between Four Walls’ tumbles in slow motion through cascading keyboard chimes and piano tones. If we’re resigned to a short summer, Mirrors’ autumnal pop fittingly soundtracks the dying of the light. (SH)

KNEE-DEEP

August 10th – 12th / Secret location, near Liskeard / £25

230 miles from Brighton HEADLINERS: Willy Mason, Tall Ships DON’T MISS: Islet, Swim Deep, Loose Talk Costs Lives Tucked away in a corner of the Cornish countryside, KneeDeep is a low-key, somewhat DIY festival, with an admirable pick of indie, electronic and folk acts. Knee-Deep programmes its two stages without overlaps, so your £25 means you can see every one of the 30-plus bands – nice work at less than a quid a group – and there’s a cinema, jamming tent and craft activities besides. It’s non-profit too, with donations going to Cornwall Music Therapy Trust. IN A NUTSHELL: A tiny boutique festival, run with passion and humour.

ONE LOVE

August 10th – 12th / Hop Farm, Paddock Wood / £110

40 miles from Brighton HEADLINERS: Gaudi, Freddie McGregor, Cornell Campbell DON’T MISS: Michigan & Smiley, Dub Syndicate Sussex lad Dan Wiltshire founded One Love Festival five years ago, as the UK’s first speciality reggae and dub festival. From its local beginnings, One Love has spent the past couple of years up in Hainault, but for 2012 it’s back in the countryside at Hop Farm. In addition to dozens of new and legendary performers and sound systems, One Love will also be hosting movies, shorts and documentaries from the Jamaica Reggae Film Festival throughout the weekend. IN A NUTSHELL: You can’t get more chilled out than One Love.

BEACONS

August 17th – 19th / Funkirk Estate, Skipton / £84.50

286 miles from Brighton HEADLINERS: Wild Beasts, Toots & The Maytals, Roots Manuva DON’T MISS: Factory Floor, Junior Boys Situated uphill in the Yorkshire Dales, Beacons Festival attracts a more left field, and quite likely hardier, bunch of performers

than many of its rural equivalents. Reggae legend Toots Hibbert aside, Beacon’s line-up is impressively fresh faced, neatly rounding up many of 2012’s hottest tips, from Willis Earl Beal to Clock Opera. There’s a decent amount of films, talks and art too, although, perhaps more so than many festivals, it would be sensible to pack your rain gear just in case. IN A NUTSHELL: An excellent bill in one of the UK’s most beautiful locations.

GREEN MAN

August 17th – 19th / Glanusk Park, Powys / £145

205 miles from Brighton HEADLINERS: Van Morrison, Feist, Mogwai DON’T MISS: Jonathan Richman, Peaking Lights From its humble beginnings as a 300-capacity get together hosted by musicians Jo Bartlett and Danny Hagan, Green Man has grown to become one of the best loved speciality festivals in the calendar. In partnership with The Big Chill, the greatly expanded Green Man now entertains 10,000 folk/psych fans in the beautiful Brecon Beacons, with the draw of some major league headliners. Keep an eye out for Brightonians King Porter Stomp and Dizraeli too. IN A NUTSHELL: The alternative folkies’ festival of choice.

SOUTH WEST FOUR

August 25th – 26th / Clapham Common, London / £92.50 49 miles from Brighton HEADLINERS: Chase & Status, Skrillex DON’T MISS: Public Enemy, Skream & Benga, Green Velvet It’s been a slow but sure growth for award-winning dance festival South West Four over the past nine years. Sympathetic to the greater Clapham populace, the beats stop at 10pm (later than previous years), so hardcore clubbers can use the whole thing as a warm up for the night ahead. Festival exclusive appearances from Roger Sanchez, Erick Morillo, Carl Cox and, worth the admission alone, Public Enemy testify to South West Four’s global reach. IN A NUTSHELL: An absolutely huge bill of top ranking electronic beat makers.

JERSEY LIVE

September 1st – 2nd / Royal Jersey Showground / £92

222 miles from Brighton HEADLINERS: Chase & Status, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds DON’T MISS: Friends, Hervé, Primal Scream It may be just a small island somewhere out over the horizon, but Jersey is still flush enough to host two major music festivals this summer (the first, the slightly more sedate Folklore, arrived at the end of June). The bill for Jersey Live was still shaping up as SOURCE went to press, but our friends and yours Rizzle Kicks are among the big hitters and veterans appearing across its four stages. Your British pounds will be accepted. IN A NUTSHELL: A broad mix of mega acts makes that Channel Islands holiday more tempting.

OVER THE MOON

September 14th – 16th / Hempstead Lane, Hailsham / £70 (£80 from Aug)

23 miles from Brighton HEADLINERS: Dub Pistols, Eat Static, Celt Islam DON’T MISS: Los Albertos, Transformer The team behind new Sussex weekender Over The Moon has plenty of organisational experience, having previously run Out Of The Ordinary festival along similar, family friendly lines. Like OOTO, Over The Moon takes place over the autumn equinox, and maintains a close connection to its predecessor’s beliefs in alternate ways of living (ecological, astrological, spiritual). Musically, Over The Moon encompasses a range of festival friendly sounds, including plenty of reggae, Latin and funk. IN A NUTSHELL: An educational, ever so slightly eccentric weekend out.

BUTSERFEST

September 16th / Queen Elizabeth Country Park, Petersfield / £20

50 miles from Brighton HEADLINERS: Kids In Glass Houses DON’T MISS: Futures, Don Broco Created to bring some summer fun to the restless youth of

PAGE 42

East Hampshire, Butserfest is a strictly alcohol and drug free event, a policy that extends to the bands too. The line-up isn’t toned down though, with a strong bill of underground rock heroes spread over the festival’s two stages. The organisers have laid on plenty of energetic activities for Butserfest’s target 14-20 age group too, but there’s no age limit on attendance. IN A NUTSHELL: Proof that the kids are alright, if slightly deafened.

MISCHIEF

September 21st – 23rd / Secret location, West Sussex / £66

30 miles from Brighton HEADLINERS: Pas Des Probleme, Phi Life Cypher DON’T MISS: Suave Debonair, The Meow Meows Following a low key debut in 2011, Mischief Festival returns at a larger, but still secret, location somewhere in the rural West Sussex wilds. With dozens of acts spread across its themed stages, Mischief aims to cover most musical bases, with plenty of live hip hop, ska, reggae and folk, and DJs playing drum’n’bass, hardcore, disco and plenty more. There’s a mix of cabaret performances, a cinema and a kids’ parade thrown into the pot too. IN A NUTSHELL: An ambitious hotchpotch of grass roots festival attractions.

LONDON SUMMER JAM September 29th / Brockwell Park, Brixton / £18

50 miles from Brighton HEADLINERS: Everyone DON’T MISS: You Here’s a novel idea for a festival. Instead of booking individual artists, London Summer Jam throws the spotlight onto the crowd, inviting attendees to jam together to create the soundtrack to the day. Confident musicians can apply for a handful of performance slots, while tuition workshops are available for the less sure. Five stages cover different genres, both electric and acoustic, including rock and indie, blues, reggae, urban and more. You can try any number of new musical instruments too. IN A NUTSHELL: The ultimate in festival democracy. And a one, two, three, four…

WORDS BY HAYLEY SIMPSON PHOTO BY KEVIN MEREDITH AT LOMOKEV. COM/STYLE

Another month, another young Brightonian spotted for style well beyond their years. Phoebe, who’s just shy of her 15th birthday, caught our eye with her bold use of pattern and colour. “I think because of the person I am I like things that stand out quite a lot,” she says. “I’m quite an outgoing person and it goes with my personality.” Not many people would be brave enough to clash stripes, leopard spots and tribal print in one outfit but Phoebe takes on the challenge by mixing in smart basics, like the blazer and shirt. Some of her friends think her look can be a bit “in your face” and she says her stepdad doesn’t really “get it” but, like all of the coolest kids in school, she doesn’t care and instead is just doing her own thing. Leopard print hair band from Primark “This is actually my friend’s but I borrowed it from her cos I love patterned stuff.” Glasses “These are prescription glasses. I’ve had thick-rimmed ones for about a year now. Before I had some smaller frames, but I prefer these.” Blazer from Primark “I like wearing blazers and shirts. I’m not really a girly person, I like games consoles and stuff.” White shirt from New Look “I get a lot of stuff from Primark and New Look. I know what I like so I tend to stick to shopping in the same places. I prefer high street to vintage so I tend to follow the mainstream trends but try to put my own quirky spin on it.” Leggings from Primark “I’ve got so many patterned leggings and in my friendship group that is sort of my thing. I’ve got two pairs of black and white ones, American flag ones, chain ones…probably enough to wear two pairs every day!” Trainers from Vans “I do like my trainers. I think I have a little bit of an obsession.”

UNSUNG HERO 100 PEOPLE WHO MAKE BRIGHTON WHAT IT IS

NO. 31 SIMON PARKER WORDS BY STUART HUGGETT Simon Parker’s Cable Club shows at the Prince Albert have given a leg up to almost every Brighton band of note in the past decade. Simon also plays in Villareal and Lightning Dept, runs the Numbskull HQ record label, has a show on Radio Reverb, and is a tireless promoter of the city’s unsigned acts. Why did you start Cable Club? We began in the summer of 2002, primarily because as a musician myself I was frustrated and disappointed with the way that local bands were getting treated. Poor sound, mismatched bills and not getting paid at the end of the night were all symptoms of Brighton in the early 2000s. Which shows are you most proud of putting on? I bought bands such as The Cribs, Kasabian and 65daysofstatic down for their first ever Brighton dates, that’s pretty neat. A lot of local bands like Turncoat, Paul Steel, Educated Animals, The Customers, The Upper Room, Young Soul Rebels and Winteria also had a great run of shows between 2002-07. I’ve promoted around 1,100 local shows in the past decade, so that must be over 2,000 bands. No wonder I need a holiday. How healthy is the current Brighton scene? There are always a lot of great bands moving to or forming in Brighton. I don’t see this changing, especially as we have music colleges and a sparkling reputation that other parts of the county struggle to attain. The scene is fragmented, but it couldn’t really work any other way due to the diversity of musicians. How do you sustain your enthusiasm for new music? I’m always finding great new bands. At the moment Sparrow, We Spies, Us Baby Bear Bones, LL Cosmonaut and Lion Bark are amongst my favourites. Music has always been in my blood. What else am I going to do, get a proper job?

Cable Club 10th Birthday gig featuring Two Jackals, Running Dogs and Sparrow, The Haunt, Friday 27th.

THE MEAL We rather fancy the traditional Bushman’s reindeer (£12.90) but aren’t in the mood for mash so ask if we can swap to new potatoes (an option with the meatballs). The waitress is very against the idea, which shows that everyone here cares about how the food works together. So we go for stegt flæsk (£8.90), a Danish take on pork belly where the crispy meat seems to be cut into chunks and then baked. The dauphinoise potatoes are deliciously creamy and the spring greens go great with the parsley sauce. Next stop, of course, is the traditional Swedish meatballs (£9.90 for our large portion, £7.90 for a normal serving) and they’re excellent. Peppery and solidly meaty, they’re served on a bed of mash with the lush creambased gravy and lingonberry jelly we love so much. As is the odd Swedish way, they come with fresh salad rather than vegetables, but we’re used to that now. Even stranger, for dessert our pancakes (£4.50) come with jam. It’s rather charming but we’ll take a bit of time on that one.

SECRET EATER

NORTHERN LIGHTS

Mon-Thurs 5pm-midnight; Fri 3pm-2am; Sat noon-2am; Sun 3pm-2am Little East St (01273) 747096 THE PLACE Back in the day The Strand was our favourite restaurant in Brighton and we were rather upset when it closed down. But as Brighton’s only Nordic bar, Northern Lights has become a second home for not just ex-pat Scandinavians but also Brits looking for something off the beaten track. It’s clearly working for them as when we arrive at a little after six o’clock all the tables but one have reserved signs on them.

THE VERDICT If you’re looking for something a bit different but not scary, Northern Lights fits the bill. The food is tasty and authentic and very keenly priced. It’s also got a great atmosphere – it was clearly just about to get very lively – if you’re just looking for a drink. All in all it’s enough to make us stop mourning The Strand, and that’s very high praise. WERE WE SUSSED? Well, we saw our Finnish neighbour at the bar just after ordering and stopped for a chat, so maybe we were sussed. But nothing was mentioned so we might have got away with it.

The name ‘Blue Man’ comes from the Saharan desert nomads called Tuareg, who used an indigo dye which would literally stain their skin blue, giving rise to the name ‘L Homme Bleu’ or ‘The Blue Man’.

IN CONVERSATION WITH

JONATHAN CENZUAL BURLEY

CAPTION

First-time filmmaker Jonathan Cenzual Burley shot his low budget debut El Alma De Las Moscas (The Soul Of Flies) in Spain, enlisting Tim Walters (Monsters Build Mean Robots/ Last Days Of Lorca) to compose the soundtrack. The rural comedy-come-road movie appeared on the international film festival circuit last year, with two sold out screenings at the BFI London Film Festival. El Alma De Las Moscas goes on general release on 13th July; with director and composer both taking part in a Q&A screening at the Duke Of York’s on the 16th. How did you become a filmmaker? I moved to Brighton eight years ago and started doing stuff for bands like Last Days Of Lorca and 900 Spaces. Not film work per se, but projections, photos and videos. I didn’t start making films until I went to America and met a director who was on his way to Argentina. He said, “Do you want to come with me? I can’t pay you but it’ll be fun.” It was great ‘cos some of the actors in my film were people I met there. I never really went to a proper film school, I just learnt it as I went along.

cheaper than it used to be, and so easy to use. I needed money for post-production so I ended up begging to my parents, because it’s very difficult to get grants when you’re a first time director. I made this film as a presentation card: this is what I can do with no money, now give me some. How did Tim get involved with the soundtrack? From day one I wanted the music to be as important as any of the characters. Tim and I were talking about the music before we even shot anything. When the film was finished I gave him a rough edit and said where I wanted a certain type of music. He came back with stuff that was so much better. He learnt to play the accordion for it, and some really beautiful classical guitar. There’s two Monsters Build Mean Robots songs that they rewrote to be more acoustic, with a trumpet instead of a synth, and real violinists.

What advice do you have for aspiring filmmakers? Just go and shoot the film. I’ve learned tons about business because my friends are musicians. With music it seems to be: get out there, show your stuff, sell your CDs and pimp yourself How did you fund your film? out, but with film, people just sit there with their script, waiting Through desperation more than anything. SIX OF THE BEST

HIP HOP COVERS WORDS BY DAMIAN HARRIS, STUART HUGGETT, JAMES KENDALL

Hip hop is possibly the most difficult genre to cover, which might explain why there are so many god-awful versions knocking around YouTube and Spotify (in fact you don’t need to head much further than these six before you’re in the world of novelty). Once you’ve got over the lack of melody the next hurdle is the macho bravado in the lyrics – hard to pull off over an acoustic guitar without your tongue in the side of your cheek. And a misplaced tongue can very much ruin your flow – just ask 50 Cent.

BEN FOLDS

Bitches Ain’t Shit

From the title right through to its very core, ‘Bitches Ain’t Shit’ is a hugely misogynistic song, but its unpleasantness is exactly why piano man Ben Folds chose it. One of Dre’s dullest productions, Folds adds tender melancholy, suggesting that Snoop and co have real regrets about their behaviour. But stories of murder also gain an element of ridiculousness coming from Folds’ geeky, white mouth. “The shit she be doing ain’t shit,” he deadpans, claiming that, “that’s some real conversation for your ass.” A beautiful dichotomy between the lush melodies and unpleasant lyrics, Ben’s grandmother apparently loved it until she listened to the vocals. (JK)

THE GOURDS

Gin And Juice

Before the likes of Hayseed Dixie made a career it, The Gourds’ bluegrass reimagining of Snoog Dogg’s archetypal g-funk track turned the original’s relaxed hedonism into a moonshine fuelled alt-country hoedown. The Gourds’ recording first appeared in 1998, becoming an early file-sharing hit, although, thanks to the internet’s pre-Google uncertainty and its lengthy jamming section, it was often misattributed to stoner favourites Phish. Oh well, pop quiz! Can you name any other Gourds song? At all? (SH)

TRICKY

Black Steel

Originally about a prison break, Tricky’s rock-riffing take on Public Enemy wisely concentrates on the powerful concept in the flawless first verse. “Got a letter from the government the other day/Opened it, read it, it said they were suckers,” exclaims the impotently furious protagonist before ending up in the clink as a conscientious objector. That Martina Topley-

TIGA

Bird was a teenage girl when she sang about being drafted to the army matters not. She’s almost as angry about the situation as Chuck D, as the tough beats clank like the bars of a locked cell. (JK)

TORI AMOS

97 Bonnie And Clyde

’97 Bonnie And Clyde’ was one of the most harrowing tracks on Eminem’s breakthrough ‘The Slim Shady LP’, telling a grisly tale of Shady roping in his daughter Hailie to dispose of her murdered mother’s corpse. Amos reworked the song from Kim Mathers’ whispered perspective on her brilliant, conceptual covers record ‘Strange Little Girls’, stripping the recording down to just piano, Bernard Herrmann strings and flickering drum machine. Grim stuff, but no more disturbing than Eminem’s deeply troubled original. (SH)

TIGA

Hot In Herre

Nelly’s best song by a country mile, ‘Hot In Herre’ was already kinda camp before electro jock Tiga added it to his ‘DJ Kicks’, one of the many excellent exclusive tracks for the mix series. The Neptunes were absolutely at the peak of their considerable production powers when they made the original, so Tiga – who also tackled Public Enemy’s ‘Louder Than A Bomb’ to lesser success – didn’t have to do too much. But the cold synth stabs complement the gayest vocal a hetero fella can deliver straight-faced. You couldn’t go to a party without hearing this in 2003, thank god. (JK)

NINA GORDON Straight Outta Compton

In these days of relentless swearing and casual violence it’s easy to forget just how shocking NWA’s ‘Straight Outta Compton’ was at the time of its release in 1988. So to hear the song that sent shockwaves through provincial Britain re-interpreted in the delicate stylings of Nina Gordon is something of a bombshell too. Hearing the line “Goin’ off on a motherfucker like that, with a gat that’s pointed at yo’ ass” delivered in a sweet and earnest folky manner is something quite special. (DH)
