Clothes are brilliant, we’d be quite literally naked without them. But fashion, or more correctly the clothing industry, is going through a bit of a weird phase. This hit home the other day when we were charity shopping (again). Loaded down with books and an 80s Madonna mirror we thought about the last time we bought something amazing to wear in a chazzer. Partly the lack of good threads is because so many “vintage” shops now exist that we don’t have to spend days rummaging to find the good stuff. But there’s another, more concerning, reason. Now the charity racks are filled with disposable clothes from George At Asda, Primark and Florence + Fred. Initially our thoughts were of the future of vintage clothes. If all we’re buying is crap to wear once, what’s going to survive 30 years for the next generation? Also is buying things to wear a couple of times a good use of the planet’s resources? And then the Bangladesh disaster happened and added an extra layer of concern. As boring as it sounds it’s time to have a think about how we’re clothing ourselves – ethically and of as good quality as we can afford in these austere times. A trolley dash around Primark needs to become a thing of the past.

PLAYGROUP COMEBACK
After rumours that Playgroup were calling it a day after last year’s festival, they’ve had a rethink and returned instead with a downsized affair. There are just 500 tickets available for Playgroup Festival 2013, and at the time of writing over half of these had sold to loyal punters, without any acts announced. The festival takes place from August 16th–18th at a mystery location in the Sussex countryside, with secret new fancy dress themes to be revealed.
PRIDE POP
Endearingly eccentric performer Paloma Faith, original Sugababes trio Mutya, Keisha and Siobhan and soulful singer Alison Moyet (formerly of Yazoo and now a Brighton resident) are among the main stage headliners at Brighton Pride this summer. Joining them in Preston Park on August 3rd are hit-makers past and present including Stooshe, Ms Dynamite, Beats International’s Lindy Layton and hi-NRG icon Hazel Dean. Early bird tickets for what’s shaping up to be a girl-pop spectacular are on sale now.
SADDLE SORE
Tourists beware, the funniest but most eye-watering date in the city’s social calendar occurs this month, when Brighton Naked Bike Ride returns on Sun 9th. Several hundred fully and partially naked participants of all ages will ride through the city to raise awareness of cyclists’ vulnerability on the roads. The event also serves as a protest against car culture and a celebration of the human body. Email brighton@worldnakedbikeride.org for details on taking part.

With Edinburgh Fringe taking place later in the summer, another crop of this year’s performers are heading down to

Highlights of the Komedia’s line-up include Alex Horne (June 12th), Jon Richardson (July 2nd) and Marcus Brigstocke (July 28th), while the Caroline Of Brunswick’s programme includes Lucy Porter (June 17th), Josh Widdicombe (July 16th) and Nick Helm (July 30th).

Major pop party alert: Brighton gets a new festival this summer and the kids are gonna go bonkers. The Wanted, The Saturdays and our own Conor Maynard headline the first SD2 Festival in Stamner Park on September 29th, with lots more Reggie Yatesbothering acts to be announced over the summer. Not since the much-missed days of Party In The Park has one patch of grass seen this much chart action. There are after-parties in the pipeline too.
DAWES INDOORS
Alternative cabaret-folk duo Bitter Ruin have announced a show at Highbury Garage to celebrate the runaway success of their recent Kickstarter campaign. The Brighton band were looking for £20K to fund their upcoming album, but having a few famous friends, not least comedy star Matt Lucas who agreed to join them for special shows at lucky fans’ houses, helped them pass the target within 12 hours, finally hitting £33K. Tickets for the September 7th gig go on sale this month.

A rare live music performance comes to Montpelier Place coffee shop Mr Wolfe this month, with an intimate evening of quiet electronic sounds on Weds 12th. Debuting her solo project Winston & Goldstein is Kins’ keyboardist Queline Smith. Headlining is Lumbers, whose ambient delicacy is accompanied by live projections from media artist Emily Pelstring. We finally make it over to the legendary Troll’s Pantry (see page 41) and then another burger place appears that’s getting everyone excited – we honestly can’t keep up. The Burger Brothers is a premium takeaway joint on North Road near The Fountainhead, with burgers ranging from £5 for a Simple Jack to £8.50 for a Bennetton burger with top quality stilton, Portobello mushroom, pancetta and much more added to their locally sourced, self-minced patties.
Apart from P Diddy’s frankly quite terrifying yelling on his Felix Da Housecat collaborations, there’s not much the SOURCE office loves more than hearing flamboyant American DJs loudly promising to jack our bodies to a 4/4 beat. This sounds blasé, but it’s true – it’s been nothing but Todd Edwards on the stereo this week. Anyway, Audio’s new weekly night Get Jacked! finds Matt Bassant and friends playing strictly house music every Wednesday. To put it another way, house music all night long.

With its North Street restaurant already a popular success, healthy eaters’ choice Foodilic has opened its second central Brighton outlet (there’s a third in London) at 163 Western Road. Founded by renowned restaurateur Peter Ilic, Foodilic offers a largely organic menu for a wide range of tastes, including a strong vegetarian and vegan selection, with a major focus on take-out options for those of us too busy to grab a seat.
DJ Mike Diver describes his new night at the Green Door Store as a ‘guilty pleasure’ night, but banish all thoughts of Boston from your mind. The clue’s in the name – 4/4 Ish covers a wide range of electronic pop and dance, from Grimes and The xx to Ford & Lapotin and Four Tet. It’s Diver and friends playing what they like really, but staying smart as well as populist. 4/4 Ish takes place on Thurs 20th, admission free.
Caffeine-free drinks are all very well if you’re the sort of person who starts foaming at the mouth after a Boost bar, but for those of us who can’t get into work without downing a full cafetiere, Wake Up! on St James’s Street is a welcome shot in the arm. The shop specialises in energy-giving teas, coffees and soft drinks, including an array of continental colas like Club-Mate and Hausmarke. They do mail order too.

Jewellery maker Susannah Dowse opened her first retail outlet in the city at the end of May. As well as her own creations, the Dowse shop stocks selected items of home furnishings and artwork by modern designers, including many members of Brighton’s arts community. Dowse is located at 133 Western Road, opposite Norfolk Square.
Following the success of their Sonic Youth Sunday in the spring, Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar start dedicating further irregular Sundays to the music of just one band. First up, and in memory of late bassist Chi Cheng, it’s Sacramento’s alternative metallers The Deftones on Sun 2nd. Two weeks later, Radiohead’s labyrinthine back catalogue gets the treatment, on Sun 23rd.
Music website Kit Records has been created by a handful of Brighton artists and performers to host reviews, art and interviews, with an emphasis on local contributors and new discoveries. Site highlights include an audio tour of electronic music historian Ian Helliwell’s flat, guest mixes by R Stevie Moore and Glasgow store Volcanic Tongue, and archives of Kit’s fortnightly broadcasts for London’s NTS Radio.

In a year which began with them knocking out Marilyn Manson covers at Sea Monsters festival, Brighton boys The Wytches have had a rapid rise. Quickly picked up by national press and radio, the young psych-garage trio bagged a strongly favoured NME Radar slot at The Great Escape last month, and this Hope show sees them launching their clanging debut single ‘Beehive Queen’. Their label Hate Hate Hate Records’ other discoveries, Tarik Badwan’s Loom, also play The Hope on Sat 15th. (SH)

With their efforts to bring the finest roots, folk and Americana acts to Hove’s Palmeira pub now firmly underway, Brighthelmstone Promotions celebrate the summer with a 12-hour festival of bands across two stages. Folk rock headliners Danny & The Champions Of The World come out of Oxford’s Truck Records family, drawing their members from Goldrush, Grand Drive and others. Alt-country star Peter Bruntnell and Q-hailed “Scouse Springsteen” Robert Vincent are also high up on a long bill of downhome sounds. (SH)

Last year, The X Factor producers made some fresh-faced hopefuls change their name from GMD3 to District3. Apparently, it’s better to sound similar to a South African region infamous for apartheid than share a name with a number plate. Of course, the only ‘districts’ their tween fans are familiar with are those in The Hunger Games, so their clumsy moniker shouldn’t stop them from following the success of One Direction. As Louis Walsh kept saying, they’re the next big boy band. (AJM)

A lot of new bands are drawing inspiration from late 60s psychedelia but with his use of original analogue instrumentation, and with a voice to match, Jacco Gardner is the real deal. With his debut album ‘Cabinet Of Curiosities’ he creates swirling sun-drenched baroque pop melodies that wouldn’t sound out of place next to bands such as Love, The Zombies and Syd Barrett’s Pink Floyd. With escalating harpsichord and string sections, it’s a perfect homage to the era, done for today. (AT)

When Mark Arm beseeched to us back in 1988 to ‘Touch Me I’m Sick’, it was almost a call to arms for the disenfranchised and spawned the start of what later became the grunge movement. 25 years on, those words still have a power and a passion to them that will be evident when Mudhoney hit the Concorde. With shows still as loud and intense as they were back in the 90s, the godfathers of grunge will leave you wondering where the hell you put that plaid shirt anyway. (AT)
It would be easy to describe Toro Y Moi’s sound as merely harmonies for the hipster or label him as chillwave, but this would be a mistake. Since the dreamy electronica of his ‘Causers Of This’ debut, Toro has experimented with combining dance music and jangly indiepop, creating a disco house party on his most recent album ‘Anything In Return’. A genre-encompassing talent, Toro Y Moi is definitely worth your time, whatever you call him. (LL)

OPM are certainly aware that there’s one song that will always define their career. They’ve embraced their unfortunate status as one-hit wonders by calling their latest run of shows the ‘Heaven Is A Half-Pipe’ tour. Their music promises to take you back to a time when Tony Hawk, ollies and the word ‘gnarly’ were firmly part of the zeitgeist. Brighton’s skaters may still be eagerly awaiting their new park at The Level but at least their sport’s moment in the pop chart is back. (AJM)

Cunningly named collective Sly & The Family Drone are about as far from funky as you can get, making the sort of sounds that poor old Sly Stone probably hears in his mind when he goes to bed nowadays. The group make drawn out, hypnotic noise collage from old cassettes, disassembled drum kits, oscillators and submerged vocals, building up to pummelling waves of intensity. Support comes from dark ambient psychedelicists Plurals and charity shop riot grrrl popsters Slum Of Legs. (SH)

This intriguing pairing of a former Slit and an ex-member of Stereolab should make for an unforgettable night from two disparate talents. Albertine was absent from the music business for 25 years before releasing her debut solo album last year; a catchy, lo-fi collection assisted by old Clash buddy Mick Jones. Sadier’s last Brighton show was a sombre, soul-baring affair but she remains a class act and this night promises much for fans of both their former bands. (SC)
Charlie Harper’s ever-reliable punk stalwarts never got the acclaim of some of their less-deserving contemporaries but they’ve always remained true to the spirit of ’76. The Subs’ back catalogue of socially-aware, three chord classic songs is perfect for a moshpit of sweaty, shirtless blokes looking for middle-age kicks. With constant touring and a stable lineup, they continue to be a tight unit and Harper, still pogoing at the ripe old age of 69, shows no sign of slowing down. (SC)

With clanging indie guitars, Beach Boys-esque keys and vocals reminiscent of the Pixies, Splashh have a polished psychedelic sound, which is strange considering the unlikely circumstances of their rise. Kiwi Sasha Carlson and Aussie Toto Vivian only started writing songs when they moved to East London in February last year. By May they had their first gig but with no band; in two weeks they found a bassist and flew out another Kiwi for drums. Against all odds, luck or destiny brought Splashh together, so catch them before they take off. (TLB)

A constant underground presence on the folkier side of the punk scene (or the punker side of the folk scene), Blyth Power have their roots in Crass-affiliated anarcho bands The Mob and Zounds. Steered by founder and singing drummer Joseph Porter, Blyth Power’s esoteric interests include such English pursuits as cricket (they hold their own knockabout Ashes every summer) and trainspotting. Forming in post-punk Manchester, Hulme’s Inca Babies peddled a harsh northern take on the sleazy rumble of bands like The Birthday Party and The Gun Club, a fluctuating line-up seeing members of Inspiral Carpets and Big Flame pass through their ranks. Indie Chart regulars at their mid 80s peak, Inca Babies reformed a few years back and are already on their second album on new material, the sinister adventures on the high seas tales of ‘Deep Dark Blue’. We’re so excited to have Martin Rossiter play at SOURCE New Music we can hardly breathe. The former Gene frontman’s solo debut of piano songs is going to pack even more emotional punch in the flesh and his recent ‘Live At The Unitarian Church’ album shows he has no problem belting the songs out live. There’s a very real chance that we might cry when he plays ‘Three Points On A Compass’. He’s also been known to throw in some Gene classics too. Martin is backed up by delightful folk pop favourites The Beautiful Word and singer-songwriter Jacko Hooper. (JK)

Baby-faced Matt Corby could’ve been Australia’s answer to Justin Bieber if he’d won Australian Idol in 2007, but coming second was clearly the best thing to happen to the then 16-year-old. Instead of taking the pop path, he’s been signed by Ben Lovett from Mumford & Sons, toured with Elbow, released four EPs and been compared to Jeff Buckley by a wealth of music fans and critics. Expect a soaring husky voice, acoustic guitars, pretty lyrics and a lot of girls swooning. (TLB)

As grunge makes a comeback in 2013 it was only a matter of time before an all-girl group picked up the riot grrrl mantle. Australian three-piece Valentiine are not only doing just that but they’re making their femme rock godmothers proud. Channelling influences from Hole, The Breeders and Veruca Salt, they make dirty pop hooks laced with grinding guitars and drowned in passionate, powerful vocals. Ladies, it’s time to pick up those guitars and start making some proper noise once again. (AT)

Brooklyn’s finest stoner/sludge metal band Naam, replete with the compulsory amount of beards, bring their intense, psychedelic-tinged metal riffs to Sticky Mike’s, fresh from Desertfest and support slots for Orange Goblin and Nebula. With a sound that is reminiscent of Black Sabbath colliding with Type O Negative via Kyuss, on current album ‘Vow’ they create grinding psych anthems that put the heavy back into metal. (AT)

Yes, horror films can be scary, but there’s nothing like the phrase ‘super group’ for sending shivers down a music lover’s spine. Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks find the Animal Collective founder teaming up with artist and former Dirty Projectors performer Angel Deradoorian and less well-known drummer Jeremy Hyman, once of Matt Groening favoured noise rockers Ponytail. They’re bringing their loopy, serial killing shtick to the UK for this month’s ATP and tonight is their British debut. (SH)

When describing multi-instrumentalist Aussie beach bum Xavier Rudd it’s hard to get past “holy shit, this guy’s incredible”. His live shows consists of him demonstrating his musical mastery of as many instruments as he can, while crooning out reggae-infused accompaniments to late night beach parties. Although it’s easy to typecast his music as anthems for stoned surfers, Rudd celebrates the spiritual bond one has with the planet and his vision of the potential for a better world. (LL)

Five years ago, The Virgins were in danger of being brushed aside as another shameless band of privileged American kids trying to slum it in the grubby world of rock‘n’roll. Time, though, has been kind to them. With their new album ‘Strike Gently’ released on Julian Casablancas’ Cult Records, they have returned with a maturity that just wasn’t apparent on their 2008 debut. Carrying on in the footsteps of The Strokes, The Virgins are a new breed of band oozing New York cool. (LL)

Sure, it’s all about the music but a great band should look good – just ask The Rolling Stones, The Strokes or The Ramones. Hell, even Daft Punk learned pretty quickly to don sequined suits and hide their boring faces in shiny robot helmets. Pop music is a visual medium as well as a collection of sounds. The Libertines went a long way on one good song and some nice military jackets after all. Luckily for Curxes, they’re the whole package – as interesting to the eyes as they are to the ears, as The Great Escape discovered last month. Even lacking Roberta’s DIY visual projections, their set at The Mesmerist was, well, mesmerising. Macaulay, in suave polka

dot shirt, threw his mop of platinum blonde hair about with the same vigour as he did his bass. Roberta meanwhile sang with great intensity as she climbed onto the nearby seating – behaviour rather at odds with her sophisticated little black dress and seamed stockings. “If I see a band I want them to be interesting to look at, something that draws me in,” says Macaulay, who is much more jolly than his SOURCE shoot Bladerunner-esque persona might suggest. “I think it helps with the interpretation of the music to have something going on visually,” adds Roberta. “We’ve only recently hit upon a sound we’re really comfortable with. And

who has been described as the bastard child of Edith Piaf and Robert Smith. “People seem to like it,” says Macaulay. “I like it.” It’s a sound that comes from a love of 80s bands like Depeche Mode, filtered through a modern ear. “I’ve got an obsession with Sleigh Bells and wanted to distort everything, including the drums,” smiles Macaulay. The two teamed up when Roberta’s band, Hold Fast, asked Macaulay to play with them at a White Lies support slot. He enjoyed it so much he joined the group, but when the two got more into the electronic side of things they were met with indifference from their bandmates. “We talked about doing a side project,” remembers Roberta. “We had a few practices and no one else was really into doing the whole electronic thing – they wanted us to go more down the prog route, while I had Rick Wakeman nightmares.” “Funnily enough we’ve kind of gone back to halfway between the two,” says Macaulay, “Half the post punk band and half the electronic band. We’ve taken the bits we like the best of both and glued them together.” “We’ve used the DIY ethos but tidied up the sonic and aesthetic elements,” explains Roberta. Since then it’s all been going rather well, peaking – so far – with a recent remix request from the similarly badly-spelled electro poppers Chvrches. Curxes ‘1996 Remix’ of ‘Recover’ is absolutely brutal, a synth-stabbing assault on the senses that’s a 4/4 kick away from destroying the toughest techno clubs. Chvrches liked it enough to put it on their EP, a vinyl version of which came out for Record Store Day. Aside from a love of synths and the misuse of consonants (Curxes is pronounced ‘curses’, in case you hadn’t guessed), the two are unlikely BFFs. However they do share a mutual love affair with bloggers – the two bands both gaining lots of online praise and appearing in the Blog Sound Of 2013 list alongside Savages and Haim. “I have heard our Chvrches version is a Marmite remix,” says Macaulay. “Some people love it and others absolutely despise it. But as long as it gets some kind of reaction that’s OK.” “We’d rather be Marmite than peanut butter and just beige,” says Roberta. “My dad hates our music, so maybe that’s a good start,” smiles Macauley.

Last year’s ‘Spectre’ combines sparse synth pop and Siouxsie & The Banshees-style goth to create an industrial grind. ‘Haunted Gold’ meanwhile has even more punch, all synthetic snares and screamed vocals. Anyone who thought this was a car that only ran with one foot jammed on the accelerator will be delighted with the change of gear for new single ‘Further Still’. It has the melodrama of Twin Peaks turned into a spooky lullaby. Curxes call their music blitz-pop. “The name was a joke that’s gone too far,” smiles Roberta,

Their dads might not be in the audience, but the next plan is a UK tour towards the end of the summer, and a possible vinyl single on a label set up by a hip band who are Curxes fans. ‘Valkyrie’ is an intense, stomping, Winston Churchill-sampling industrial pop song with a squalling trumpet that’s on a mission to knock you out cold. One way or another they’re primed to step up to the next level. “I think up until this point we haven’t been ready, material wise, if I’m honest,” admits Macaulay. There’s no doubt that they’re ready now.

Celebrating 15 years of Virus Recordings, this night is a mustrave for anyone who likes their d’n’b deep, dark and techy. Ed Rush and Optical have been producing together since the 90s, so it’s not hard to see why their tracks are some of the tightest productions around. Favouring steady build-ups and precision percussion, they pushed forward the tech step and neurofunk side of drum’n’bass, while lacing it with a distinctly British gritty and guttural edge. Black Sun Empire are backing them up, if you need more convincing. (ZC)

KRS-One (oh sorry, he lied, he’s numbers one, two, three, four and five) brings his electrifying live show back to Brighton once again. Packed full of energy, the ex-Boogie Down Productions leader is infamous for his riotous hip hop shows, which are more moshpit than headnod. Name-checked and referenced by countless other rappers as one of the greatest to ever hold a mic, and harnessing the essence of what it is to be a true MC, get down to the Concorde 2 and be part of ‘The Rapture’. The Stay Sick gang have pulled off something of a coup for their 5th birthday party, securing one of only two UK shows from amazing Japanese garage girl trio The 5.6.7.8’s. Best known for their appearance in Kill Bill Vol 1, they’ve been knocking out kitschy rock’n’roll covers for almost 20 years. Their live show is a sight to behold and with go-go dancers, cult movies and a strong supporting line up, no self-respecting 60s-loving hipster should miss this groovy night. (SC)

With glistening productions and warm synth-led house that undulates with enthusiasm, it’s no wonder DMC World dubbed Purp & Soul “one of the UK’s brightest new labels.” Pearce is joined by equally deep techy up-and-comer Harry Wolfman. Joining him tonight are Double 99, whose ‘RIP Groove’ is arguably the first record of the genre – all sub bass and skippy beats. This Skint night is going to be fun. Jump wide. (JK)

Part of the experimental production scene growing up around The Caxton Arms, promoters Diskordance step up to host their first Green Door Store show this month. With sparkling remixes for Ninja Tune artists Andreaya Triana and Bonobo under his belt, Brighton’s Alex Banks has his first solo album of head nodding beats coming out on the label later this year. Despite someone ‘finding’ one of his artworks in a Brighton park and flogging it on eBay, Imbue is having a pretty good time of it lately. As well as his art vending machine in Marwood, he’s back at No Walls. Reduced To Fear, his fourth solo show, promises to be pretty political, featuring work in his regular fields of screen-printing, design, painting and sculpture. Imbue’s art always has a sharp sense of humour, warping everyday design (this time SNES cartridges, sports fans’ foam fingers and Kinder Eggs) into biting social commentary, so it should be fun. (JK)

Mark Thomas’ political convictions mean that you’re as likely to spot him speaking at a UK Uncut rally or fronting investigative documentaries for Dispatches as you are doing stand up. He got his break in pop radio however, as a regular on the original Mary Whitehouse Experience and hosting Radio 5’s live music show The Mix. Tonight’s 100 Acts Of Minor Dissent sees Thomas finding a ton of ways to make comic mischief at the expense of big business and the government. (SH)

Tiptoeing on a constant tightrope between the thoughtful and pretentious, we know Paul Morley as the chin-stroking interviewer of cerebral musicians, turning their burblings into reverentially regarded writing. Here, the Stockport-born critic discusses his new book, ‘The North (And Almost Everything In It)’, which ponders the north-south divide by drawing a line which runs from Wordsworth to Morrissey via VK-fuelled street fighting and sad-eyed whippets. Owd lad’s ambition is a reimagining of that there north’s people, places and cultural fabric. (BM)
Felix Dennis has been many things in his life, from young thorn in the Establishment’s side (thanks to his involvement with counter-cultural mag Oz), self-made millionaire with Dennis Publishing (he founded numerous titles, including Maxim), and, more recently, acclaimed poet. Tonight’s appearance is part of the tireless veteran’s 30-date tour promoting his latest collection ‘Love, Of A Kind’. Note the self-deprecating title of the show, but warn your granny that Dennis claims the honour of being the first person to say ‘cunt’ live on British telly. (SH)

When the Professional Footballers’ Association booked American stand up and panel show regular Reginald D Hunter to perform at their annual awards this year, you – and he – might think they’d be up for some edgy humour. Far from it, the audience furore that greeted Hunter’s more controversial material (not least his repeated deployment of the ‘N’ word) was splashed across the tabloids. Hunter’s easy charms have seen him ride out the storm nonetheless. (SH)

An age of austerity, money’s tight, our wages/student loans don’t last forever and all that, but going to the Duke’s At Kommy to see a really good film once a month remains mandatory for the soul. Alice Lowe, of the blacker-than-midnight Garth Marenghi’s Dark Place, and Steve Oram, now in Heading Out, take the leads in acclaimed roadtrip/comedy/killing spree, Sightseers, screening this evening accompanied by a Q&A with director Ben Wheatley. The subject of this month’s SOURCE Unsung Hero, Adrian Bunting was an effervescent star in the Brighton arts scene. Following his recent, sudden death, the hope is that his wish of building an open air theatre in the city will be realised. Stewart Lee, Tim Vine, Simon Evans, Joanna Neary, Mark Thomas and MC Susan Murray make up a great line-up at this fundraising gig, appropriately hosted at the Dome, whose refurbishment Bunting worked on. Sign us up, New Venture – we will take a corking double bill of Harold Pinter pieces for less than the cost of a pint each thanks, you little board-walking darlings. It gets better: The Lover is about sexual fantasies and surreal power struggles within a somewhat twisted marriage. First performed at the turn of the century, Celebration – a work of black humour, existentialism and the long and winding road to blissful escapism – was Pinter’s final play. (BM)
COMEDY: SEANN WALSH Caroline Of Brunswick Mon 24th
Rapidly elevating its status as one of our best fringe venues, the Caz has a truly impressive quality and quantity of Edinburgh previews going on this month. Affable grump Seann Walsh is probably the most high-profile of them, although his popularity on the small screen and big stage has only informed the rest of the world about arguably the best new comedian Brighton has produced in recent years. For a tenner, in a tiny room, this is a coup. (BM)
THEATRE: A WOMAN OF NO IMPORTANCE
Little Theatre from Sat 29th
At times beset by the kind of trademark controversies his incendiary words frequently provoked, this Oscar Wilde portrait of bastard children and upper class dalliances was first performed at the end of the 19th century. It’s been a semi-regular favourite of theatre companies more recently – including a performance on Radio 4 earlier this year – and appears at the Little before touring to Cornwall and Lewes Castle’s Gun Garden. EP: THE CREAKING CHAIR ‘Noise Body’ (Bouffant Records)
From their roots as an alt-folk trio, The Creaking Chair have narrowed focus to become essentially the solo project of Andrew AC Cooper. As the musicians decreased, the scope of the music has widened, with layers of keyboards, loops and electronics colouring the palette. The title track appears twice, first as a mysterious, literate pop song, later as a lo-fi but lush instrumental, while ‘Spun’ adds effective synthetic brass and steel effects. It’s a sweet and slightly ambient package. (SH)

Electronic duo IYES are songwriter Melis Soyaslanová and producer Josh ‘000’ Christopher, sometimes joined live by guitarist Tom, whose studio experiments have whipped up this airy, r’n’b tinged pop. Josh and Melis duet on the sweeping, rave rush of ‘Glow’, while the lovelorn ‘Lighthouse’ adds treated, limpid guitar lines, expanded with deep bass programs and alpine synth descents. IYES pursue instrumental ends too, with the epic, cinematic ‘Daddy’. These grand musical edifices conceal a soft centre. (SH)

The new group project of affable songwriter Dan Markland, Lonesome Heights’ debut full-length is a warm-hearted affair. Markland has a talent for observation, songs like ‘Dreams’ and ‘She Keeps Busy’ painting vivid pictures of everyday lives and hopes. His downbeat voice and smart lines paint Markland as an unselfish Morrissey or a not-punchable Albarn on a strong set of tunes that are smart enough to avoid the pitfalls of mere Britpop revivalism. ‘Tessera’ (Chord Punch)
Luuma is electronic producer Chris Keifer and ‘Tessera’ is his debut solo effort for ‘algorithmic music’ label Chord Punch. Three long tracks find Luuma steadily exploring stark techno patterns, solid mid-tempo beats rising and falling beneath buzzing clouds of monochromatic tones. It’s fearsome, fascinating stuff, peaking with the elongated humour of ‘The Photocopier Song’. If you’re into the

data-crunching aesthetic of Editions Mego and the abstract end of the Warp roster, this excellent release should draw you in. (SH)
MIXTAPE: MUMDANCE

It’s been two years since we heard from Mumdance and as he departs Brighton for London he leaves us with this free 50 minute mixtape. From the Tomita-eqsue classical synth opener ‘Demographics’ to the frenetic snares of old school techno track ‘Move Your Body’, the selection really lives up to its name. There’s a sinister feel to much of the tape – we’re looking forward to hearing it at 5am. (JK)
EP: SPACENOID ‘Clive And Direct’ (Beatabet)
Instrumental trio Spacenoid are anchored by a basic guitar, bass and drums set up, augmented by samples, loops and effects. Get past that punning title and their debut live in the studio EP for tuned-in collective Beatabet is a spacious, math rock combination of organ tones, sustained vocal sighs and dub-funk rhythms. Citing Fridge as an influence, Spacenoid have absorbed elements of Battles’ early EPs too. ‘Copter’ jumps out for its frantic rotor-blade guitar chops, while ‘Not Knowing’ is jittery and jazzy. (SH)

The latest EP from one of the city’s more distinctive voices, singer-songwriter Carrie Tree, is seriously hushed stuff. Taking a confident, less-is-more approach to both vocals and arrangement, Tree and her band play softly, the words frequently dropping to barely a whisper. The subtle electronic touches on the title track and momentary glimpses of strings and woodwind on ‘Misty Water’ and ‘Sweet Oak Tree’ are reminiscent of Björk’s stripped back reinvention on ‘Debut’, filtered through an English folk sensibility. For some, style runs in the family. It’s most definitely true in Jennifer’s case, with her and her sister, Grace, both having been snapped for the Street Style pages of SOURCE – a complete coincidence we must add. Both have drawn our eye, yet in very different ways – Jennifer bringing patterned chaos to neutral tones while her sister was dramatic and gothic. No doubt the obligatory sibling saga of ‘borrowing’ each other’s clothes does occur, yet these sisters easily pull off their own individual styles, with enviable results. A fashion history student, due to graduate this summer, Jennifer isn’t afraid of combining the old and the new, proving that an open mind can result in an effortlessly cool image. Playwright, builder and compere Adrian Bunting passed away in May, one month after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Before his death he put in place plans to construct Brighton Open Air Theatre (BOAT) in Dyke Road Park. SOURCE spoke to the BOAT crew. What were Adrian’s interests? Adrian was seldom without a cigarette and never without an opinion. In the early 90s he was founder, MC and ringmaster of the legendary Brighton cabaret Zincbar and he wrote, directed and produced the award-winning play Kemble’s Riot. He was also a builder and construction manager, an inveterate inventor and an evangelical atheist with a robust interest in women, cryptic crosswords and croquet. Why was Dyke Road Park chosen? In April the council asked for ideas for the defunct bowling green. It was Adrian’s local park for 25 years and he’d drawn up plans of the perfect theatre space, utilizing his considerable experience and his construction know-how to take on the problems of open air productions. When he fell ill he gathered his friends, described his vision, gave them his plans and asked them to see the BOAT to fruition. He left them £18,000 and his complete faith. Adrian died on 11 May, knowing the BOAT would float. What will BOAT be like? It will be the only open air theatre of its kind, lawned and landscaped, with state of the art sound and lighting, and other bespoke features. The planning process starts now and we’re looking to launch the BOAT in time for next year’s Brighton Festival. How did the Dome benefit (see Culture) come together? Adrian’s friend Susan Murray put the show together in double-quick time. Ade managed Jo Neary for a while and knew all the performers from countless Edinburgh Festivals. The Dome have shown their support too and are giving us the venue at cost, bless them. Tickets are £20 and every penny goes to the BOAT. How can people assist with the project? THE PLACE Apart from, incredibly, searching for dogging information, more people come to the SOURCE website looking for tips on Brighton’s vibrant burger scene than anything else (we wonder if those two activities go hand in hand in any way). One thing the burger crew haven’t been able to find yet is a review of Troll’s Panty, and, yes, we’ve had it in the neck for that, but during our big burger round-up the van was between sites. A year on, they’ve settled into a booth in the beer garden of, aptly, The Hobgoblin. It’s time to find out if the hype is true. THE MEAL Two burger options – that’s all you’re getting. And by that we mean you can’t have chips, onion rings or truffle oil. The choice is ever-changing, but on our visit it’s the ever present Imperial (£6.50) and The Smoky Mountain (£8.50). The latter (pictured), to which we add an extra patty for £3, is a big, sloppy, wonderful mess. Loaded with extremely smoky rum BBQ sauce, the tender, 35-day-aged meat oozes juice and all dignity is thrown to the wind. With a type of bourbon bacon jam, garlic mayo, caramelised onions and smoked Foresters cheese there are lots of flavours going on, but it gels perfectly. Also impeccably balanced is The Imperial – there’s a sharpness where the St Giles cheese meets the tangy pickles and American mustard that’s spot on and lets the top quality beef sing.

THE VERDICT So the question is simple: is this the best burger in town? The answer is more complicated. Ignoring the cost, yes, without doubt this is the best burger you can buy in our city. Brighton Burger is very good and less than half the money, but Troll’s Pantry is worth every single penny too. It’s probably not possible to make a burger with more love, attention to detail and vision than Troll’s Pantry do. It’s going to take something special to knock them off the top spot. WERE WE SUSSED? To be honest they were too busy to do anything but concentrate on cooking.

PHOTO BY JAMES KENDALL The collapse of the Rana Plaza factory in Bangladesh earlier this year, with a death toll topping 1000, has reawakened public awareness of the human cost of cheap, mass produced clothing. Siobhan Wilson of Queens Road’s Fair shop is a speaker on fair trade and ethical fashion issues. When did major fashion chains start using Bangladeshi labour? Bangladesh’s garment industry has been growing since the early 80s when the country’s economy opened up to foreign investment. Companies such as Tesco, Asda and Primark source their clothes from Bangladesh due to very low labour costs. In the Rana Plaza factory, the high street companies involved were Primark, Mango, Benetton and Matalan. How common are tragedies such as Rana Plaza? They’re too common. In November 2012 the Tazreen Factory fire (suppliers to Walmart, C&A and Edinburgh Woollen Mill amongst others) in Bangladesh killed 112 people. Last year over 300 people died in Karachi, Pakistan in a factory again supplying the European clothing market. This is an issue in many developing countries due to low wages and lack of support from governments for labour and safety regulations. Countries are competing to supply the cheapest labour and workers’ rights will be overlooked. What positive steps have Overseas companies do not own the factories and until this horrific incident in Rana Plaza have not been taking responsibility for the fires in Bangladesh and elsewhere. The major positive outcome of this tragedy is that many

retailers have signed up to the International Labour Organisation approved Bangladesh Fire & Building Safety Agreement and the country’s government is finally supporting their rights of garment workers to join trade unions. This makes overseas companies and local government more accountable for the working conditions of Bangladeshi workers. I personally think certification telling the consumer under what conditions the clothes are made is needed. Consumers have the power to set the standards for these companies and certification of the garment-making process would enable them to use this power. How is buying Fair Trade different to buying from the high street? At the moment, high street production is primarily about making clothes at the lowest price possible and focusing on profits, with little regard for the workers. Fair Trade’s focus is on enhancing the lives of people making the garments and growing the cotton. It lifts people out of absolute poverty to a life of self-sufficiency. It also focuses on the impact of production on the environment and supports education and healthcare in the community. In what ways can we become more responsible in our buying habits? Our expectations as consumers must change. Always wanting to buy things at unsustainably low prices cannot come without a human cost. But although we all think it’s just the cheaper brands on the high street that allow the conditions in Bangladesh to carry on, it isn’t. We need to re-educate ourselves into buying less often, choosing better quality and Fair Trade clothes, recycling more of our wardrobe and supporting local and ethical businesses, including British ones. Shopping continually for the best bargain is not good for our economy, for people in the developing world or for the planet.
How can consumers pressure the industry for change to be made? Make sure the retailers you use have signed the Bangladesh Fire & Building been taken since? Safety Agreement. At time of writing Gap and Asda are the main brands that have not signed up, so keep the pressure on! You should also check retailers’ websites and see what they say about their suppliers. If there’s no information there, email them, or ask on Facebook or in store about their supplier trading policy. Although he revitalised fashion photography with his raw street energy, William Klein had a healthy disregard for the world of clothing. This absurdist pop art comedy is a scattershot satire about the ridiculousness of the emerging youth fashion industry, at times coming on like Monty Python let loose on a Vogue spread. Who is Polly Maggoo? In all the silliness we never find out. The actress – Dorothy McGowan, Klein’s favourite model – added to the mystery by disappearing from public life after its release. Stanley Kubrick declared the film 10 years ahead of its time, while now it’s a perfect snapshot of it. (JK)

John Hughes’ 80s dreamgirl Molly Ringwald plays wrongside-of-the-tracks Andie – who proves that as long as you have a sewing machine and a vision you can hold your sartorial own against the school ‘richies’. When the prom looms, Andie customises an exquisite donated vintage prom dress. We’ve seen what she can do with a welfare cheque and a thrift store, so with baited breath we await her Sistine Chapel. Her cack-handed fashion illustration rings alarm bells, but nothing can prepare us for her final creation – a startlingly misshapen pink sack stitched by blind monkeys. (RK)
ZOOLANDER

Just as Polly Maggoo rather obviously caricatured legendary editor Diana Vreeland, this fun comedy drama doesn’t need to step very far from its inspiration of Vogue editor Anna ‘Nuclear’ Wintour. Anne Hathaway has a disastrous start as the lowly second assistant to Meryl Streep (in full scenery-chewing flow). Things start to go better when the magazine’s stylist shows her how to dress, though caustic, downtrodden first assistant Emily Blunt is harder to win over. Ultimately fashion loses in this battle for Hathaway’s soul, but we enjoy the fight. (JK)
You don’t even need to have seen Ben Stiller’s finest moment to know what ‘blue steel’ means, so ingrained is the phrase in our understanding of the modelling world. This silly plot about a conspiracy to kill the Prime Minister of Malaysia is merely a thread to stitch together the gags (if you want the same story without the jokes, Brett Easton Ellis’ boring ‘Glamorama’ got to the tale first). And the jokes come thick and fast, with an emphasis on the former. But remember, there’s “a lot more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking”. (JK)
THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE
GIRL, MODEL

Vogue’s infamous 840-page September 2007 issue contained a record breaking number of adverts, but this documentary focuses on the 13% of the magazine that was editorial. It takes a very neutral stance on über-editor Wintour, never going out of its way to humanise her. But the real star of the show is Wintour’s frequently put upon, but never weak, creative director Grace Coddington. With her feet firmly on the ground, Grace seems to be a rare strand of common sense. But this is fashion as big business, where the iron will of one woman affects what we all wear. (JK)

From the opening scene of hundreds of Russian children lined up in bikinis – like some sort of warped cattle market – this is a hugely disturbing documentary. An amoral scout travels through darkest Russia to find ‘fresh faced’ (ie young) models to be whisked away to Japan to make their fortune. It doesn’t work out like that and 13-year-old Nadya is dumped alone in Tokyo with agents barely interested in her. For a look at how tough even successful modelling is, check out Sara Ziff’s doc Picture Me. She went on to form Model Alliance, a group set up to help vulnerable girls like Nadya. (JK)
