love spreads

While we were thinking of this month’s theme, London was burning. Vast swathes of society were falling apart around our ears and Britain was looking pretty ugly. But one positive thing came out of it right away. People used blogs and Twitter to organise a huge clean-up of not only their own riot-damaged streets but other people’s riot-damaged streets too. It shone through the darkness like the sunrise after a long cold night, and it got us thinking. What happened to community, once such an important part of British life? The greedbased society (also know as capitalism) clearly isn’t working properly right now, is it time to look elsewhere? Maybe the hippies have been right all along. While we rushed to the shops to consume our way to happiness, cramming our gobs with sugar, fat and meat on the way, they were taking things back to basics. While we can’t get behind the wind-flapping trouser bottoms there’s plenty to celebrate in their view of the world, so that’s what we’re going to do this month. As the hippies in the 60s sang (later to be mocked by Nirvana), “Come on people now, smile on your brother/ Everybody get together, try to love one another/Right now.” Yeah, man.

MAKE STUFF

As we wandered through the Playgroup fields last month (which was wonderful, wasn’t it), we heard a familiar song coming from The Burrow. A classic slice of country rock, we were whistling along, pondering which 70s icon it was. And then it hit us – it was Holy Vessels playing a song we’d heard maybe three times and we were singing along like it was an old favourite. Boy, their songs are catchy we thought as we patted ourselves on the back for booking them into our SOURCE New Music night at the Pavilion Theatre on Friday 9th.

Do you like apples? Really, really like them? Cox’s Pippins, Granny Smiths – all the different types of apples? If only there was an entire day devoted to them… Well now there is – Sunday 25th sees Stanmer Church come alive with Apple Day, an entire day devoted to apple awareness, advice, expert identification and enthusiastic consumption. There’s even an actual orchard there you can mooch around, and plenty of apple-based activities for children. It’s free to get in, which is good – money doesn’t grow on trees. But delicious and nutritious apples do. Lovely apples!

SING WHEN YOU’RE WOMEN

Brighton Women’s Centre is joining forces with one of its neighbours, the Ranelagh blues bar, for a series of monthly fundraising gigs. BWC has served the women of Brighton a wide range of services for 37 years now, from drop-in counselling to affordable crèche facilities. The new night launches in the pub on Friday 23rd with a mini-festival featuring four local front-women playing everything from country and blues to rock and Motown. Admission is free, with donations to BWC welcome.

HOPE FOR CHEAP BOOZE

If you’re drinking at The Hope, you might want to get a bus – it saves on drink-driving convictions and kerb-stumbling, guttersprawling journeys home. Get a Big Lemon Bus however, and you can get £2 off Hope Live events as well as all your drinks at happy hour prices. All you need to do is show a valid ticket. They’re running the deal from Wednesday 15th til mid-October, so give your wallet a rest and your journey some zest.

With an opening night featuring the hotly anticipated performance of local dubstep producer Ital Tek, the avante garde Anxst and Planet Mu founder Mike Paradinas’ new collaboration Hererotic, this month-long celebration of the digital world is not to be missed, especially as it’s free. Not just about groundbreaking music, the festival’s bursting programme in various venues throughout September includes conferences, filmmaking, one-off performances and interactive events. Go visit Brightondigitalfestival.co.uk for details.

Grab a soldering iron, borrow your nan’s thimbles and get yourself down to the first Brighton Mini Maker Faire, at the Dome on Saturday 3rd. Gather with like-minded makers, crafty types and inventors extraordinaire as part of the Brighton Digital Festival to “celebrate arts, crafts, engineering, science projects and the Do-It-Yourself mindset.” Since starting out in California in 2006, Maker Faire has spread across to the UK like hot solder on toast. And as it’s organised by volunteers it’s free. We’re so going to make us a wisecracking housework robot.

WELLY-FREE FEST

Festivals in fields are so 2010, right? If you’re over muddy fields and flooded tents and appreciate the value of your warm bed at night, the Grand Finale Festival could be the one for you. 16 live bands and four DJ sets jostle for your attention across three packed days at Concorde 2 from Friday 23rd, including ska heroes The Junk and Brighton’s best leather-clad girl-rock band, Vier. And if it all gets a bit much, you can always go for a sit down on the beach.

bunfight for foodies

The Brighton Foodie awards voting closes on Monday 12th, so you’ve still got time to give props to your favourite restaurant, café and food-punting pubs and shops. Brightonfoodawards.com is the place to vote, before Juice FM DJ Andrea Fox joins Latest grub-gobbler Andrew Kay to slap the requisite backs in an awards ceremony you probably won’t be able to get into. But if you like eating food it’s a good opportunity to help your favoured outlet get a shiny certificate on their wall, so get involved.

THORNE’S FOODS

BELOW THE LINE

BRIGHTON CRAFT FAIR

LIVE & UNLEASHED!

If your diet could do with being de-kebabbed, you could do plenty worse than checking out Thorne’s Foods on Gardener Street. It’s a farmers market, café and restaurant all under one roof, with a load of locally-sourced produce just waiting to flood your flabby and listless body with goodness. They’re open late as well, so folk with jobs can pop in on the way home from work. Look ‘em up at ThornesFoods.co.uk.

News of craft fairs appearing on the horizon can mean only one thing – Christmas is now unavoidably on its way. Maybe this could be the year you mean to start sooner and actually do it, and here’s a good opportunity to get some early gift ideas under your belt. The Friends Meeting House on Ship Street is the place to be on the first Saturday of the month, with locally produced art and handicrafts as well as a café for tea and cake. Brightoncraft.co.uk has more info.

FEVER

Hot times ahead at the Fortune of War as their Friday nights are now called Fever, dedicated to raising both the temperature and the ceiling with Latin grooves, flamenco beats and sultry samba rhythms, featuring the audio delights of Pollito Boogaloo, Melenda de Pomelo and the Askew Records DJs. Bringing a bit of spice to the seafront will be gladly appreciated, so get yourself a brandy, watch the sun set over the pier and let the beats transport you to somewhere warmer.

THE HOP

Calling all jocks, nerds and cheerleaders: every Thursday the Haunt is transforming into The Hop – the gym hall grad ball you remember vicariously from your misspent youth (specifically, misspent by watching too many bad American films). Lay down your hamburger and put on your dancing kitten heels for school nights out, with 50s rock’n’roll and un-chaperoned disco dancing.

Page 6

Anyone with a passing interest in electronic music won’t let this pass them by: there’s never been a better reason to be tired at work on a Wednesday. Below the Line is a new weekly late night event on Tuesdays, promising the freshest, newest producers delivering exclusive tunes and mixes at the Tube. With rumours flying and an achingly cool reputation already, it’s worth making the effort. And if you really can’t tear yourself away from the sofa, it’s all broadcast live online, from Tuesday 27th.

Saturday 3rd is a date for your diary if you want a kind of mini Manumission from your clubbing experience. DJs, live musicians and performers will be packing the big stage at Digital on the first Saturday of the month, for a night of extreme entertainment and a big party atmosphere. Trapeze artists, flame-throwing spark shows, hoop acrobats and cancan showgirls, together with upfront club music, all promise an epic night out.

BEYOND SKIN

If you’re a lady of the vegan persuasion and you’re finding it hard to source slaughter-free footwear that doesn’t look like something your nan would have worn, here’s a Hove-based solution. Beyond Skin is an ethical fashion label now on sale at Igigi on Western Road, with a range of PETA and RSPCA award-winning shoes made from all sorts of recycled materials. Check out their range at Beyondskin.co.uk.

MIGHTY HUMBLE

Here’s a new t-shirt company that’s about as ‘Brighton’ as any could ever be. Mighty Humble’s garments are all organic and ethically made via all kinds of sustainable wind and solar energy, printed with eco-lovely water-based inks and designed by nice people guaranteed not to have committed even a single human rights abuse. Wear your eco lifestyle quite literally on your sleeve – go see Mightyhumble.com.

AMANDA PALMER Concorde 2 Thurs 1st

Few people can take the credit (or the blame, if you prefer) for dragging a whole musical genre out of the shadows on their coat tails. Yet punk cabaret/cabaret noir/Weimar/whatever had barely tweaked the nipples of the mainstream in its 10-year existence, prior to the arrival of Palmer’s Dresden Dolls. Expect doom-laden keyboards, body language borne of street theatre, and occasional diversions into ukulele covers of Radiohead. Support comes from feisty Brighton duo Bitter Ruin. (AP)

TIMBER TIMBRE Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar Thurs 1st

Canada’s music scene is full of pioneers at the moment and Timber Timbre is at the frontier. Eerie folk melodies and atmospheric soundscapes are at the heart of their sound, with tense, disarming slides between blues and soul, and more than a twist of witch house. Their fittingly named fourth album ‘Creep On Creepin’ On’ was released in May, and has gained them music prize nominations, global attention and appreciation outside the folk world. Sleazily brilliant, ostensibly smalltown and certifiably creepy, don’t miss this intimate show. (JMM)

THE BLUETONES Komedia Weds 7th

They’re calling it the ‘Farewell tour’. But what’s to stop Mark Morris and co from turning around in approximately a decade and saying “Hang on, it’s somewhere in the region of 25 years since our smash hit album ‘Expecting To Fly’ came out and this wage I’m getting from Lewisham council delivers neither the salary nor the adulation that I have come to expect from my career as a Britpop icon to rival Rick Witter and Nigel Clark’?! An axe is the correct answer. (BG)

Page 8

willy mason

WILLY MASON

Komedia Thurs 8th

He may have been laying low for a while, but one listen to the empty blues of ‘Live It Up’ will remind you of the talent that is Willy Mason. New York-born to two folk singers, the talent has followed through the genes. With two albums behind him and dates supporting the likes of KT Tunstall and Radiohead, Mason is a musician’s musician and with an intimate show like this, it’s sure to be an arresting and engaging evening. (JC)

THE FUCK U PLANET EARTH

Cowley Club Fri 9th

Those of you with long memories of the Brighton music scene will recognise spaced-out drone merchants The Fuck U Planet Earth and minimal tunesmith boy/girl duo La Momo. They’re still partying like it’s 2005 and making us wish we had as much hair and as little liver damage as we did back in those heady days. Support on the night comes from The Big Black Dots, Chris La Momo’s freak-out collective featuring ex-Boredoms and Phil Collins 3 members. (LMM)

TROPHY WIFE

Hope Fri 9th

It’s perfectly correct that this trio come from Oxford, as what their indie pop music lacks in edges it more than makes up for with cinematic beauty. They’re the most cohesive unit to emerge from the city’s recent underground music scene, collectively known to the queuing A&R folks as Blessing Force. They’ve visited our smaller venues several times over recent months, but each of their performances shows a band quickly growing in confidence. Their steady rise in buzz continues, alongside their self-assurance, as we lead up to the debut album. (TR)

EMA

Green Door Store Tues 13th

Much hyped and abbreviated, Erika M. Anderson emerged in 2011 from the wreckage of her former band Gowns, with debut album ‘Past Life Martyred Saints’ under her arm. Seemingly suffering little surface damage, her shock of blonde hair and insouciant cool, however, betrayed a tortured sensibility that drew an unusual, jagged and bloody line between country, goth and grunge. Across a bleak, dissonant canvas of atmospheric dirge, EMA obsessed about body horror, like an indie outlaw riding out of town on David Cronenberg’s monster nag. Tonight should be fun! (BG)

B.DOLAN & DAN LE SAC Haunt Weds 14th

Ex-poet, non-pretentious gay rights activist and all-round exemplary young man, B.Dolan (or Bernard to his mother) isn’t your average hip hop MC. Slipping between alter egos like a schizophrenic political revolutionary, Dolan’s live shows are as much an education as entertainment, but this is a class with truants in the front row, eager for more. It’s alternately hilarious and thought-provoking, but never dull. Dan le Sac also features with a live solo performance. (JMM)

TREETOP FLYERS Green Door Store Thurs 15th

It’s been quite a year for the Treetops, releasing an EP on Communion Records, recording sessions for the likes of 6 Music, XFM and swiftly winning the Glastonbury emerging talent competition, meaning they played the famous Other Stage in front of thousands of people. And quite rightly so, as their harmony-filled sound is a cross between the likes of Crosby, Stills & Nash, Crazy Horse and The Byrds – basically some of the finest country soul you could wish to hear. (IC)

HANDSOME FURS The Hope Fri 16th

There’s something inherently fascinating about couples in bands, and Handsome Furs are a married duo far more exciting than the will-they-won’t-they-does-anyone-care White Stripes. Their latest album ‘Sound Kapital’ reflects a more impassioned

Page 10

and shouty side to Handsome Furs, was written entirely on keyboards and is based on synth-driven 80s European electro. The multi-talented Minneapolis duo’s live shows are reputedly dark, electric and dance-able. Support comes from last month’s cover stars AK/DK. (JMM)

THE WAR ON DRUGS Green Door Store Fri 16th

The War On Drugs was launched back in 1971 with considerable fanfare by President Nixon. While the world’s pushers, smugglers and addicts have since been pursued mercilessly into every corner of the globe, Brighton somehow drifted from its moorings, becoming rather like a separate nation state in the vein of Monaco, the wealth swapped for an addiction to getting smashed all the time. Tonight, then, Secretly Canadian’s acclaimed alt.rock trio can expect a rousing reception as they soundtrack this city’s patron saint. (BG)

THREE TRAPPED TIGERS Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar Sat 17th

These animals are determined to infuse as many influences into math rock as possible, with jazz tingles apparent and technical, awkward electronica and frenetic key changes leading to a Battles-esque complexity. An unsettling but compelling listening experience, Three Trapped Tigers released their first full length album, ‘Route One or Die,’ in May, so take this opportunity to see how their sound’s developed – their Great Escape set was enthralling, so expectations are high. (JMM)

THE TELESCOPES Prince Albert Sun 18th

Burton-Upon-Trent’s Telescopes were once part of the late 80s wave of guitar bands pushing psychedelic rock into heavier territory through pedal power and feedback attack. Their sound softened for a while, and at one time fellow Staffs lad Nick Hemming came on board, years before he made his name with Willkommen’s own Leisure Society. Having revived The Telescopes name back in the noughties, founder member Stephen Lawrie now pursues a more abstract, but often very loud, noise direction. (SH)

ALVIN STARDUST Komedia Fri 23rd

They don’t make them like this anymore, children. With a name like Alvin Stardust, it seems beyond doubt that the glammedup idol was born to be a music icon, exploding from the womb in a barrage of pop thunderbolts. Actually, his original name – Bernard William Jewry – would probably have left Alvin first on at the Dog & Duck, rather than an era-defining singer who scored so many hits he was like the 70s version of Google. Not to be confused with Gary Glitter. (BG)

FINK •

St Mary’s Church Fri 23rd

Brighton royalty Fink is kick-starting his European tour by treating us to a hometown show and the first chance to hear songs from his latest captivating album ‘Perfect Darkness’, which was released in June on Ninja Tune. If you’re not familiar with Fink, you may have been under a rock for a while: the singer-songwriter dispels traditional mores for an electronicabased, chilled-out approach, garnering him an admirably wide fan base. (JMM)

ICE BLACK BIRDS • Hope Fri 23rd

Brighton’s own rock‘n’roll revivalists Ice Black Birds are bringing their energetic live show to The Hope as part of Amnesty International’s charitable Brighton Weekender. Support comes from fellow Brightonian Alex Wells and his handpicked live band, Twin Brother, whose heads are surely held high after winning a spot on Glastonbury’s BBC Introducing stage earlier this year. With a chance to support two local emerging acts, and a worthy cause to boot, dare you miss this? (TJ)

THE BITTER SPRINGS Hydrant Sat 24th

As their home suburb Teddington is to London, so The Bitter Springs are unsung outsiders of the nation’s music scene. With 25 years of witty, literate albums under their belt (originally as Last Party), The Bitter Springs have accumulated enviable cult

Page 12

appeal, from initial John Peel patronage to a long stint serving as Vic Godard’s latter-day Subway Sect. The band’s chanting, chugging garage rock comes to the Hydrant for free tonight, so offer them a pint at least. (SH)

BETH ORTON St George’s Church Sat 24th

When she’s not pioneering new genres, collaborating with eradefining producers and campaigning for fair trade, against the spread of HIV and about the war on terror, Beth Orton can be found singing. The original behind the folk-electronica blend in the 90s and the beautiful voice complementing the Chemical Brothers has had a career spanning three decades so far, and shows no signs of slowing down. With a new album reputedly out at the end of the year, take the chance to see which direction she’s heading in next. (JMM)

UT

Prince Albert Sun 25th

Recipients of a cough-and-you-miss-it namecheck on Le Tigre’s ‘Hot Topic’, New York trio Ut emerged from the city’s brief but notorious no wave scene. Moving to England in 1981, Ut’s scratchy, trebly music found some kinship with the postpunk sounds of The Raincoats and tourmates The Fall. Although they split at the end of the decade, Ut’s widely acclaimed Blast First albums have thankfully remained on catalogue. Unexpectedly, the three reformed Ut last summer and await your viewing pleasure tonight. (SH)

BETH JEANS HOUGHTON Brighton Ballroom Tues 27th

She claims to have been born in Transylvania to a pack of albino wolves. She writes songs about dodecahedrons and insists on calling her band The Hooves of Destiny. She defies music industry lore, making a splash on the scene only to then disappear completely because she’s fallen in love with LA and can’t get around to finishing her debut album even though everyone’s forgetting her enigmatic, folk-pop charm. She is Beth Jeans Houghton and you, clearly, would not want to be her manager. (BG)

LOVE INKS

gig previews Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar Tues 27th

A new band can’t do any more than get coverage on dozens of the most respected music blogs with their initial releases and Love Inks received plenty following the arrival of their album ‘E.S.P’ this May. The resulting hype pushed this trio from Austin, Texas, to the tips of the industry’s lips around the world. They deliver their minimalist pop to Brighton for the first time, but alongside Braids they’re bringing an enjoyable warmth to a style of analogue music that The XX once served up cold. (TR)

CLOUD CONTROL

Audio Weds 28th

The UK had to wait nearly an entire year for this Australian quartet’s debut album, ‘Bliss Release’, to arrive on our shelves following its release in their home country back in 2010. They’re one of the most complete antipodean bands to arrive in years, with a bright and beautiful album of pop gems. Without doubt the star of the show throughout are the vocal chords (which simply have to be witnessed live), blasting through you like a rush of popping bubbles. (TR)

SLOW CLUB

Audio Thurs 29th

Sheffield boy-girl duo Slow Club head to Brighton on the back of their second album ‘Paradise’. There’s nothing complicated about Charles and Rebecca’s folksie-pop loveliness, but it’s utterly compelling. He looks after vocals and guitars (the normal bits), while she also sings but adds an organ called Miles, drums and an array of bizarre ‘instruments’ – such as water-filled bottles and the back of a chair – to the mix (the weird bits). Go see, and let them put a smile on your face. (GS)

SOPHIE MADELEINE WITH HER JOYFUL DIY APPROACH OUR UKULELE GIRL HAS GOT IT COVERED WORDS BY JAMES KENDALL PHOTO BY KENNY MC CRACKEN ASSISTANT – ZOE BAKER, HAIR & MAKEUP – ANGE WATSON WITH THANKS TO PLANTED, KEMPTOWN

A ray of sunshine every time we press play, Sophie Madeleine’s second album ‘The Rhythm You Started’ has been brightening up what can only be described as a lacklustre summer. The title track sparks along with close harmonies, handclaps and plenty of ‘ba ba ba’s – scientifically proven to be 37% more cheerful than ‘la la la’s – while ‘Come Follow Me’ wraps you up in a melodic duvet that will make you melt. Across 10 very catchy tracks, we were instantly reminded of 60s French songstress Francoise Hardy even before we saw Sophie’s pretty, classic look. It’s such a joyful spirit-lifting affair we just had to meet her to see if she was as sunny in real life. So, is she a jolly person? “No,” she deadpans before breaking into a chuckle, “that’s the funny thing. I think it just comes out in my music and the rest of the time I’m miserable. I think maybe I’m self-medicating, trying to cheer myself up by writing a happy song and then hoping that I’ll feel better.” She says she had years of writing miserable songs that no one really identified with, so decided to write some chirpy numbers. It’s certainly worked, and tracks like the gorgeous ‘Star’ – all simple ukulele strums and plaintive violins – will have you skipping to work days after you last heard it. It’s a fuller sound than her beloved debut, ‘Love. Life. Ukulele.’ – less raw and more percussive but still full of charm. You might think she’s doing well to provide earworms of such tenacity by album two but Sophie is a bit of songwriting boffin, having studied the form for years, ending up with a masters degree in making milkmen whistle. In fact her first LP came from her postgraduate course. Needless to say, she passed. “The first album was entirely recorded by myself,” she says, explaining the difference. “It’s raw because it’s stripped down to whatever I could play. There’s a bit of percussion but there’s no drums. It’s not really about the rhythm, it’s more about the ukulele and guitar. This new one is more about rhythm because I wanted to do an album that had drums and drum machines on it. I wanted to experiment.” One thing that has remained is the ukulele as the centre point to the songs. Though she started on the piano, before teaching herself the guitar, it was finding that small, four-stringed instrument that made her feel at home. “To begin with I used to play jazz/soul/blues sort of stuff,” she says. “I was doing that for quite a while and then picked up the ukulele and realised that my vocals were better suited to folk because my voice is quite quiet, or delicate or whatever. When I picked up the ukulele the genre I was in changed and everything slotted into place.” But as someone who considers herself a songwriter first and a singer second (“Singing was just something I had to do to

www.brightonsource.co.uk/BANDS

show people my songs,” she reckons), does having four strings make composing more tricky? “I wouldn’t say it’s more difficult or easier,” she says. “It’s just different. Which is why I liked it. There’s only so much you can do so it’s down to the bare bones of the song. If you can make a song sound full and good on a ukulele with just your voice then you’ve written a good song. And because I learnt it as I was going, half the time I didn’t know what chord I was playing so I was discovering new chords that I didn’t know existed.” Even though she’s seemingly happiest making up her own tunes, at the start of summer she set herself an incredible challenge with other people’s. In the 30-day run-up to ‘The Rhythm You Started’ coming out, she recorded and released a new cover version every day. From the four-part harmonies of ‘Mr Sandman’ to the xylophonic ‘Go Outside’ by Cults, each one was stunning. It sounds like quite a mission and proved a cure to her slight boredom in the run-up to the LP’s launch. It also proved to be a nice little treat for some of her fans. “A lot of the songs I recorded were requests,” Sophie explains. “I had hundreds of these requests, at least 300, from various places like my social networking sites. So I had to go through all of them and half the songs I didn’t even know. Some requests were really bizarre and some I knew I could learn.” She’d record the song two days before it was released. The songs with lots of instruments took two or three days to do including the audio and video editing, but the more simple ones had their own difficulties. “The ones where it’s just me and the ukulele had to be done in one take, and half the time I’d only learnt them that day,” she says. “So those ones were quite challenging.” It’s just another example of Sophie’s brilliant DIY ethos. She also self-recorded both of her albums, and delivered her latest to her distributors before they snapped her up for a full deal. “I hate to say it but I couldn’t get anyone interested in backing me,” she admits. “Everyone was making positive noises – I had numerous meetings with labels and publishers. But there wasn’t a drive for them to put money on the table. I was in a meeting with one of the heads of A&R for one of the majors and he said ‘Have you heard of PledgeMusic?’ I hadn’t, but I ended up meeting with them and told them how many followers I had online – they told me I was a perfect candidate. In fact I was the first artist they signed up themselves.” Sophie got her kind and enthusiastic fans to help fund the album and the rest is history. Rather successful history. “It just sort of happened,” she says. “I didn’t plan to be independent. That’s the only way I could do it, so I did it.” Now she’s put her own band together and is looking to promote her LP in New York, a place that’s almost a second home to her and already full of fans. Before she heads off she’ll be popping into our SOURCE New Music night next month. “I’m really excited about that,” she beams. “I’ve heard good things about that venue. I’ve got a new band too – a violinist, a double bass player and an electric guitar player. Plus I’ve got a looper which I use for beats and things like that.” Having discovered that – despite her protestations – Sophie’s as sunny in real life as she is on record, we can’t wait to see her perform. Maybe she’ll bring on an Indian summer.

PARADIS •

The Tube Sat 3rd

New night Paradis marks the third stage of evolution for the promoters behind The Do and 13 Monsters. First monkey, then man and now the neo-sapien. So for those of you that wept tears right up to your (m)ankles when 13 Monsters called it a day, it’s time to rejoice and don your GG$ snapbacks for tonight’s launch where residents 20JazzFunkGreats, Ed Lilo and Where To Now? play all the best tunes you’ve never heard. If its music policy is anything like their previous nights then it won’t be confined by genre or time, just fantastic tracks back to back. (ZC)

ANOTHER SUNNY DAY INDIEPOP CLUB • Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar Fri 9th

After a six-month hiatus, and spurred on by a spanking new venue and the recent twee love-in indie tracks, DJs Craig, Emily and Rob present a night for those fans of jangly guitars and sensitive poetry-writing pop stars. Playing everything from 80s indie pop to Swedish pop and Britpop plus anything else they feel like on the night, this promises to be twee in a good way and a welcome alternative to the current trend for clubs full of ironic, knowing hipsters. (LMM)

UK AIR GUITAR CHAMPIONSHIPS • Concorde 2 Fri 9th

The X Factor may have begun to dominate our TV screens for the next few months, but a talent competition possibly even more prestigious reaches its climax at Concorde 2 this month – the UK Air Guitar Championships. We’ve all done it – on the bed, in the shower and definitely on a drunken night out, and so, after scouring the country for our nation’s finest air

guitarists, we can judge once and for all who really shreds air the best. (JC)

HIGH RANKIN •

Coalition Sat 10th

According to his biog High Rankin was “born into slavery at the Richard Madeley prison for the criminally sexy.” Weren’t we all, weren’t we all. One thing we can’t claim for ourselves is a talent for crunching together the best of dubstep, electro and rave into anthems that can wake the dead. This is a headline live show, and we’ve got very high hopes for plenty of slamming basslines and a handful of silliness from the Suicide Dub boss. (JK)

LIFE’S A GAS

Komedia Sat 10th

Those of us who’ve been having a glam rock revival in their own heads for years now need to get their Tiger Feet down to this new night from DJs Warrlock Poetry and ex-Brighton legend Heidi Heelz (Glamracket). Expect not just obscure Roxy Music b-sides but all the glitterbeat-laden stompers of the era, from Slade, The Sweet, and Suzi Quatro to T.Rex, as well as some equally danceable 70s power pop. Get down and get with it! (LMM)

AUDIO’S 7th BIRTHDAY • Audio Fri 16th

Audio’s been pushing the underground dance envelope for seven whole years now, they’ve seen some of the biggest and best DJs top their bills from Carl Cox to Boy 8 Bit. To ensure their birthday’s celebrated with the right amount of skipping robotic beats and shifting cyborg breaks James Zabiela’s gonna help them blow out the candles with his fusion of house, techno and breakbeat. His tracks are multi-layered masterpieces with a synthetic edge, sometimes twinkling sunrise soundscapes inspired from his Space residency, often looping mechanised sonics designed for Optimus Prime, always progressive dancefloor fillers. WRONGTOM

Fortune of War Sat 17th

A mother of reinvention, DJ Wrongtom’s not just broken genre boundaries but smashed them into little pieces, razed them to the ground and danced on their ashes. A musical stalwart for the past 10 years and originally a percussionist, Wrongtom stumbled into the pop sphere and emerged with ghettotech, jazz and house trailing behind him. With a record collection bordering on bizarre and a technical capacity which leaves even the most superior observers impressed, Wrongtom’s coming to the Fortune to baffle, delight, astound and amaze you. (JMM)

KLASHNEKOFF

Audio Wed 21st

Supercharged push their hip hop sensibilities by booking the lionheart east Londoner, Klashnekoff. 2003’s ‘Murda’ is a seminal UK hip hop track full of bleak anecdotes, inner-city aggression and ‘nang’ flows. But tunes like ‘Black Rose’ showed Darren Kandler could ride a rhythm with more introspective lyrics just as well as he could spit killer verses. His gigs are rambunctious affairs so put your head-nodding cap on and get ready for some hip hop mosh pits. (ZC)

ABUSE •

Green Door Store Fri 23rd

GDS spread their wings and keep things fresh by launching a new electronic music night that’s steeped in mystery. For the enigmatic ABUSE we’ve been told to expect dark and alternative moody synth pop via coldwave with some aquacrunk twists. Think artists like the ghostly Oneohtrix Point Never blended into the sci-fi sounds of Kraftwerk, satanic Salem’s orchestral electronics alongside the psychedelic krautrock of Can, spun by Fokkawolfe and DJs from XANADU and Be Nothing. Suffice to say we’re intrigued and giddy with excitement. (ZC)

AKA AKA ROAR •

Fri 23rd Life

More wonky post-dubstep and blissed-out future house delights from the AKA AKA ROAR crew. Mosca tops the bill and anyone who loves their club music knows this guy is one step ahead. We’ll be in attendance just to hear him drop his new tune ‘Bax’ which rinses the 90s rave bassline over a skipping 2-step beat. In support are Altered Natives, aka Danny Native, who’s blend of deep rolling percussion and broken beat created last year’s banger ‘Rass Out’. (ZC)

HORSE MEAT DISCO Audio Fri 23rd

Big fat gay party Horse Meat Disco hits Brighton for a night of debauchery, camaraderie, spilt drinks, and a full spectrum of classic to modern disco hits. Immoral self-indulgence and shocking dance moves are guaranteed; bad dance moves are guaranteed; an aching head and wallet in the morning are also guaranteed. Get down early to check out if the hype’s deserved. (JMM)

SOUTH CENTRAL • & THE JAPANESE POPSTARS Concorde 2 Fri 23th

What a double bill. Two absolutely killer live acts that we haven’t seen down here for a while – which is surprising as The Japanese Popstars aren’t from Japan (they’re Irish) and South Central, despite being Maltese, live in Brighton. Anyway, what can we expect? Well, SC are pretty much the noisiest electro we’ve heard and JP have taken classic stadium dance and added songs. An absolute bargain for a fiver in advance, even before you throw in a DJ set from our own dubstep hero Riskotheque. (JK)

COVERT REUNION •

club previews Tube Sat 24th

Back in the olden days if you wanted a track to play you had to go to a record shop and buy it on vinyl. Crazy, but there was really no other format that had the best dance music. Through piracy and the fact that everyone plays MP3s now there are very few specialist dance shops, which is a shame cos spending the afternoon listening to careful curated tunes was a great way to put a set together. In the world of techno, Covert was a Mecca. What Alex and Japhy didn’t know about Germanic 4/4 could fit on a stamp to Detroit. Thank God (ie Jeff Mills) that they’re back for this one-off. (JK)

DEVOTION •

Concorde 2 Sat 24th

Bassline Smith and Drumsound have been producing drum’n’bass bangers for over a decade now. The production group, made up of Simon ‘Bassline’ Smith, Benjamin ‘Drumsound’ Wigget and Andrew Wright, have seen Radio 1 daytime airplay for their recent release ‘Freak’ with Fearne Cotton rinsing it out on her show, probably because of its heavily autotuned vocals. Even so, the tune still retains the grumbling, winding bassline and spitting drum loops that distinguishes their sound, and it’s good to see the guys getting mainstream recognition. (ZC)

FILTHY DUKES

Audio Sat 24th

Warehouse have got a Fabric takeover on their hands tonight – Filthy Dukes host legendary electro party Kill ‘Em All at the London hotspot where they flaunt their synthpop and electroclash sounds. As a band they’ve also made time to release tunes such as ‘Messages’, which received a lot of positive airplay back in 2009. Tonight they’re joined by Stopmakingme aka Daniel Avery who supports them regularly at Kill ‘Em All with his sets of post-punk, electro and techno leanings in between remixing for Metronomy, Munk and Hercules & Love Affair. STAY BEAUTIFUL WORDS BY JACK PRESCOTT

PHOTOS BY SALLY OAKENFOLD

Once named “the best night out in London” by Bizarre magazine, Stay Beautiful is the creation of Manics biographer and the Independent’s rock and pop critic, Simon Price. For 10 heady years it subverted the London club scene and has now strutted down to our fine city, feather boa blowing in the sea breeze. But first a confession. SOURCE would like to say it experienced the more mellow offerings that were promised upstairs in the Frog Bar, but we didn’t. That was because we were too busy stomping about downstairs to the ‘glam-punk-glitter-trash’ of Bowie, Bolan and Blondie, and trying to figure out who were boys and who were girls. Stay Beautiful has promised to be a bi-monthly event, which might seem a bit sparse, but you need this night in your life.

TONY BENN & ROY BAILEY

Komedia Thurs 15th

As public perception of politicians edges ever closer to pond life, it’s reassuring that one of the few honourably regarded politicos of the late 20th Century still brings his great oratorical skills to local stages. Mixing inspirational quotes with his own musings, Benn will alternate on the mic with legendary British folk singer Roy Bailey, the latter playing old rebel songs alongside his own work. It’s a shame this is probably the only pairing who could pull off a night like this. (AP)

THEATRE: A Celebration Of Harold Pinter Corn Exchange Fri 16th

Julian Sands reckons Harold Pinter would have been recognised as a poetic great had his skill in verse had greater exposure, having once stood in for the master playwright when he was too ill to attend a reading. Fresh from being directed by John Malkovich in Edinburgh, this short and passionate insight into Pinter’s hidden salvo veers from brash parodies to love letters and cricket haikus. Sands’ reverential treatment of the works is one most likely to please Pinter devotees. (BM)

THEATRE: Sometimes I COMEDY: The Treason Laugh Like My Sister Show Summer Special Upstairs at Three and Ten Tues 13th - Weds 14th

How much is too much during the grieving process? Where are the boundaries between laughter and death? And, for the journalists who risk their lives on perilous assignments, where is the line between bravery and suicide? After Rebecca Peyton’s sister, BBC reporter Kate, was murdered in Somalia in 2005, she decided to tell her story and contemplate the interwoven taboos in a performance which could not get much more personal. Her courage, if nothing else, is undoubtedly admirable. (BM)

The old favourites still throng the goofy and exceptionally funny line-up, but regular changes and additions to the writing team – revamped again here – make theirs a show which only seems to get better. Showcasing work from Brighton Uni’s graduating MA course students, this is a collection including animation, illustration, packaging, typography and design. The two courses represented, Sequential and Independent Project, attract participants from all over the world, working within a broad spectrum of artistic endeavour, taking in everything from the narrative potential of the t-shirt to designing gifts for the angry and the heartbroken. (NC)

There isn’t a great deal to say about the Brighton Art Fair that you couldn’t read on the elaborately-adorned tin, although the stats report sales of 500 grand’s worth of work last year for an art slosh which has gained national prominence. Always eclectic and a good chance to find out more from practitioners whose stuff you like the look of, it features more than 100 exhibitors this time around. (BM)

London To Brighton WORDS BY JAMES KENDALL Photo by Maja Daniels

The Old Market, Weds 21st Jim Stephenson, highly-regarded architectural photographer and knowledgeable fan of the genre as a whole, has been putting on photography talks for a year. To mark the birthday of his ‘Miniclicks’ he’s set up this inter-city exchange, so Brighton photography talent Simon Norfolk, Luca Sage, Ewan Spencer and Lisa Barnard are heading up to London for an open panel discussion. Meanwhile in Brighton, multi award-winning Laura Pannack will be talking about her highly emotional portraits, while Hin Chua will explain “the ongoing environmental struggle taking place beyond the

boundaries of our cities” that make up his latest project ‘After The Fall’. Nick Ballon, whose work appears in Guardian Weekend and the Independent on Sunday, joins Jason Larkin, who made his name documenting the Middle East and Africa. But perhaps the photographers we’re most interested in hearing from are Ben Roberts, who has tackled subjects as varied as youth culture in Scotland and Australian gold mining, and Maja Daniels, whose long-term project ‘Into Oblivion’ really brings home how tough Alzheimer’s is. It’s a photo dream team – at a fiver you can’t go wrong.

CRITIC BRIGHTON’S BEST talenT WORDS BY NICK COQUET, JAMES KENDALL

SINGLE: THE MOJO FINS• Owning My Condition (Amazon)

The press release that arrives with this single makes pointed references to the Fins’ distancing from haircut-and-swaggerbased fame seeking. It’s worth repeating here; you won’t see a load of self-important blogs falling over themselves to hitch this band to some nascent yet nondescript scene. It’s indie pop music, simple as that, delivered with no side, no contrived edge and no artifice. The Fins wisely eschew those angles, concentrating instead on well-played, solid tunes, crisp production and keeping their eye on an altogether bigger and more mainstream prize. (NC)

ALBUM: QUANTIC The Best of Quantic (Tru Thoughts •)

It was a decade or so ago that we first picked up Quantic’s ‘The 5th Exotic’ debut, a spliffy, trip hoppy classic that endures late night listens to this day. Since then we’ve been spoiled with regular new guises from the producer as he’s travelled the world from the UK to Colombia, From the solid funk authenticity of his Soul Orchestra to dub reggae via Flowering Inferno, all are represented on this two-disc career round-up, as well as loads we’d never heard before from an incredible 12-album body of work packed with soul and energy. (NC)

SINGLE: VARIOUS

OIB Split Series 5 (One Inch Badge •)

‘Goodbye Parthenon’, the swansong from Casiotone For The Painfully Alone, is as good a reason as you need to get this latest One Inch Badge 7’ sampler – the moniker’s being retired with this Pet Shop Boys-on-ASBO slice of lo-fi brilliance. Why? are up next with ‘Close To Me’, yes, a Cure cover whose brilliantly

Page 34

dreamy half-speed drone might actually just surpass the original. Future Islands’ ‘New Face’ is decent enough pop rock, and Nullifier’s ‘Quesht’ is a captivating mix of grunge and synth pop. All in all, the best yet in the series. (NC)

BOOK: We Are Lucky • (wearelucky.tumblr.com)

Matt Martin – curating his first book here – has been a huge influence on the Brighton photography scene since rocking up a year or so ago. Now a part of the Garage Studios crew, his compact camera-based ‘life first, photography later’ style means that he’s able to snap from within his crazy, drunken adventures and make you feel part of it all. That’s echoed by his contributors here, including Milo Belgrove from last month’s art page. All Matt’s obsessions are represented – punk, pretty girls, parties, skating, bikes, stupid behaviour – and the whole thing is an absolute blast. (JK)

ALBUM: WE WERE PROMISED JETPACKS

In The Pit Of The Stomach (FatCat •)

DEMO OF THE MONTH

JIM BRIFFETT • Kinda Like The One (jimbriffett.bandcamp.com)

This offering from ex-Miserable Rich guitarist isn’t strictly speaking a demo as such, but it’s a DIY effort, self-recorded and released, so we figured it should still go in. And what we say goes, right? At once a departure from his previous band, this still retains some beautiful strings but bounds along with summery guitar pop energy and catchy chorus hooks. There’s a really sweet stop-motion video on YouTube that’s worth checking out as well. Look out for the forthcoming album ‘Mountains’n’Lightning’. (NC)

Guitar pop’s pretty simple, right? Verse, bridge, chorus, middle-eight and all that. Well it doesn’t have to be simple, and one suspects that would be too anodyne a concept for the Jetpacks. But despite the towering guitars and thundering rhythms on this second album, it retains a definite pop ethos throughout, underlying its powerful rock foundation. Touring success with Jimmy Eat World and Passion Pit across America and Europe seems to have fanned the flames for a band ready to seriously catch fire over here. (NC)

FESTIVALS EXTRA WORDS BY NICK COQUET, james kendall

OUT OF THE ORDINARY SEPT 23-25 / HAILSHAM / £60 20 MILES FROM BRIGHTON

As the festival season draws towards a close for another year, there’s still time for a last outdoor hurrah as Out Of The Ordinary celebrates the autumn equinox at Knockhatch Farm in the south coast countryside. Fittingly for this issue of SOURCE, its emphasis is firmly on the eco, with plenty of informative talks and workshops, but the educational side is more than matched with this last-gasp opportunity to either chill out or go nuts at an end-of-season party. Spread across four element-themed areas, OOTO offers the full festival experience for you to variously dip into as you please. Air brings a mix of the south east’s finest emerging musical talent alongside more established festival favourites, as well as health drinks at the Euphoria bar. Fire offers red hot cabaret, poi and circus skills for the more outgoing attendee, while Water provides a tranquil respite with holistic and alternative therapies, yoga and sauna. Earth is the perfect place to expand your mind with topics from astronomy, astrology, science and spirituality, as well as a family area for all-ages eco learning. You can even make your journey to and from an eco experience, as the chip oil heroes of the Big Lemon Bus Company are ferrying festival-goers to and from Brighton, and they’re encouraging car-sharing for gas-guzzling minimalisation among drivers. All in all it’s probably the most rounded local festival experience on the calendar, and we could all do with imbibing the vibe. HEADLINERS: System 7, Fujiya and Miyagi, Solo Banton DON’T MISS: Transformer, Dun’n’Tuff Allstars, Boycom IN A NUTSHELL: An all-round proper festival experience, the proper hippie way

FESTIVAL OF EXQUISITE NOISE OCT 13-15 / BRIGHTON / £15 THE PRINCE ALBERT

The Prince Albert is playing host to a three-day takeover by the people behind Numbskull HQ, a music company name that might not mean much to the majority of our readers but whenever we get sent anything with their name on it we know it’s going to be decent. This four-bands-a-day-for-four-days bill isn’t entirely made up from the bands they represent but they certainly get a good showing, with prop-ups from some of the rest of the best bands around at this kind of room size. At the time of going to press (and we did leave it as long as we could) there were a few bands still to be 100% confirmed, but every single night is shaping up great already anyway. Black Black Hills (who used to be Pope Joan) have taken on a new lease of life with their name change and, from what we saw when we sneaked into their BBC Sussex session recently look unmissable live. Sparrow and The Half Sisters both seem to have achieved some national acclaim recently and return to Brighton on a high, while we haven’t seen The Valentines for a while and look forward to checking them out again. You can pay a fiver a night or get a £15 ticket for the whole shebang – either way it’s pretty decent value for what you’re going to be stood in front of. HEADLINERS: Sparrow, The Valentines, Jennifer Left, Black Black Hills DON’T MISS: The Minor Sounds, Heliopause, Good Luck Jonathon IN A NUTSHELL: Indoor indie floor fillers

FOXTROT

SHAKEDOWN

Folk music is wonderful in the sunshine but can quite often be overpowered at mixed genre festivals. Thank god for the WIllkommen Collective then, who have put together – with the help of Melting Vinyl – their third Foxtrot festival. The setting is perfect – in the grounds of Stamner House a week before those noisy dance music fans turn up for Shakedown. What better fantasy than hanging out with your favourite musicians around a country manor.

If you read our Festival Special in May then you might have thought you missed this debut dance all-dayer, but fear not. Shunted to the end of the season, you get another bite of this cherry – a mix of popularist dance icons and underground heroes. Razorlight, one of a handful of indie bands on the lineup, are billed as the headliners but anyone who has seen Example’s mix of electro production, pop choruses and hip hop rhymes will know that he’s a festival favourite that’s hard to top.

SEPT 11 / STANMER HOUSE / £22.50

Last year Laura Marlin headlined with The Leisure Society and Anna Calvi lower down the bill. Yeah, it’s a bit like The Great Escape – if you don’t know everyone on the line-up now you’ll be bragging about having seen them a few months later. There’s plenty of current faves playing this year too – not least Herman Dune who are just about the most adorable sound around right now. Also firing are Peggy Sue, with a fresh and vital new album to play from. What we’ve heard so far will give PJ Harvey a run for her money. Elsewhere their old mate Alessi’s Ark will be delivering soft, emotional lo-fi pop from her new LP on Bella Union. There’s also Joe Gideon & The Shark, The Memory Band and Sam Amidon among the baker’s dozen acts of what is a real folk connoisseur’s line-up.

SEPT 17 / STANMER PARK / £35

But more than individual bands this is a festival that’s clearly been put together with real love. Many of the people playing have a long history with the Willkommen Collective so this will be more of a special day of hanging out in the sunshine. With great acoustic music, of course.

From the other side of the metaphorical fence 2manydjs fans will be desperate to see the Belgians perform some of their iPhone app mixes live in the flesh, whether they were among the lucky few to have caught them at The Haunt or not. Elsewhere there are some big home-grown house music names in the form of Freemasons and Prok & Fitch, while Zane Lowe will no doubt spend more time playing his exclusive tunes than he will fucking talking over them like he does on Radio 1. We’d sort of forgotten about New Young Pony Club but loved their song-based electro pop when they were around last. And if all else fails Brighton’s huge DJ export Krafty Kuts always brings the party. It’s all shaping up to be a hell of a day out and close enough to Brighton’s city centre to enjoy the after parties which are going to take over the clubs as night falls. Aptly billed as Brighton’s Summer Closing Party, Shakedown marks the first big branded festival since the other ‘-down’ we don’t talk about and, you know what, it’s looking good.

HEADLINERS: Herman Dune, Peggy Sue DON’T MISS: Alessi’s Ark, Birdengine, Sam Amidon IN A NUTSHELL: A lovely day out with delightful people and gorgeous music

HEADLINERS: Razorlight, Example DON’T MISS: 2manydjs, Ed Sheeran, Kraft Kuts IN A NUTSHELL: Dance your way through the last of the sunshine

VOLUNTEERING WORDS BY NICK COQUET

One of the few beautiful things to shine through the recent riots was the social media-led community clean-ups. Twitter and Facebook, pilloried for providing organisational means for the disturbances, came good and came alive – #RiotCleanUp was amassing urban broom power before our holidaying Cabinet could even issue their usual strongestpossibleterms condemnations. People swept the streets in the midst of capitalist meltdown, their only expected reward a better community. But volunteering needn’t be a one-off emergency measure – you can get involved in making Brighton lovelier whenever you’ve got some spare time. CommunityBase.org has a full list but here’s just a few things you can do in various areas that could do with your help.

BRUNSWICK OLDER PEOPLE’S PROJECT

Old people are ace. You get to a point in life where you stop giving a rat’s ass what other people think of you, and don’t spare the horses when it comes to your alarming opinions. Unfortunately a lot of old folk end up isolated at home with no one to share them with, so get pally with a pensioner via the Brunswick Older People’s Project. It’s an hour a week and you’d get to hear cool stories about the Blitz and stuff – impact-initiatives.org.uk is the place to go.

CCHF ALL ABOUT KIDS

This is a registered charity inspiring and motivating disadvantaged kids aged 7-12. You could help on excursions and activities like beach trips, bike rides, cooking, swimming and generally steering them away from putting JD Sports’ windows in. Go to cchf-allaboutkids.org.uk for more info.

GENDER TRUST

If you’re a patient, sympathetic type, you might well be of some use to the Gender Trust. They run a national helpline for people experiencing gender dysphoria, which basically amounts to being a massive ball of identity confusion. You could help direct the troubled callers to local resources who provide practical help or just provide a friendly ear to someone in crisis for a few hours a week. They’re at gendertrust.org.uk

ST DUNSTAN’S

These good people help ex-service folk who’ve had their sight ruined in the name of queen and country. Not being able to see stuff naturally precludes many of them from playing a lot of games together, but you can feel the dots on dominoes, so they seem to play that a fair bit. To this end they’re looking for a dominoes volunteer to help out and possibly stop any armed escalation of domino-related arguments – St-Dunstans.org.uk has all the info.

THE CHILDREN’S SOCIETY

BRIGHTON & HOVE FOOD PARTNERSHIP

BRIGHTON UNEMPLOYED CENTRE FAMILIES PROJECT

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL

This kids’ society is looking for volunteer befrienders to provide a buddy role for disabled youngsters. Your role would be to hang out with a disabled kid once a fortnight or so, encourage them to build confidence and self-esteem via participation in leisure stuff like swimming and the cinema or even just hanging out in Churchill Square together. Whatever helps them. Email Magdalene.Mill@childrenssociety.org.uk.

Volunteers are needed to help in their crèche centre, helping with kids while their parents get all sorts of advice about housing, welfare, benefits and all the other exciting challenges unemployment offers. BUFCP.org tells you more about their work and how you can get involved.

MARTLETS HOSPICE

We’re longtime friends of the Martlets at SOURCE – they do loads of good work with terminally ill people, and they’ve got a number of charity shop volunteer openings across the city that you could help with. All manner of shop-based roles will fall into your lap – accepting donations, displaying stock, serving customers and helping with Gift-Aid procedures. Details at themartletshospice.org.uk

HELP THE AGED

Do you like books? Do you like old people? If so, this could be the thing for you. Help The Aged in Hove needs someone to sort through the books people donate, price them up and display them all lovely to maximise the book revenue stream through the shop. It’s a Monday morning gig, so if that fits with you email Leah on leahofaolain@hotmail.co.uk

TERRENCE HIGGINS TRUST

The THT is always looking for volunteers and right now there’s a specific Thursday opening to join an informal group of condom stuffers. Yes, it made us do a comedy double take as well, but they actually stuff them into information wallet-type things and give them out at Pride and World Aids Day events. Stuff loads of condoms, hang out with fellow stuffers, prevent the spread of HIV. It’s win-win at THT.org.uk

www.brightonsource.co.uk/FEATURES

Volunteering isn’t always about mopping up piss and stuff, you can get yourself outdoors and toil in the soil like in the proper olden days. This group wants a harvest garden volunteer to help out at their fruit and veg plot in Preston Park – working towards a sustainable citywide food system via local produce, agricultural education and proper food waste usage. Dig up some info at harvest-bh.org.uk

EVENT VOLUNTEERS

Kate Telfer is a local volunteer coordinator using social networking to harness the power of good in the community, via facebook.com/ eventvolunteers and @eventvolunteers. “I wanted a career change, and I decided the best way to get into fundraising and charity work is showing you’re prepared to put the time in and also learning from the experience. That’s why I started volunteering last year and it grew from there. I began helping out at events around Brighton, then I got involved in Oxjam last year, which is a much bigger project. Through that I worked with Kemptown Carnival at the beginning of this year; that’s when things took off even more. “I love organising and being involved in events. When you volunteer you feel like you’ve done your bit – I don’t have the financial situation at the moment where I can put loads of money into charities but if I can give up some time instead I feel like I’m giving something back. It can be one weekend a year – it doesn’t have to be much but it’s so hard to find volunteers that it can mean a hell of a lot. Even a three or four hour shift makes a real difference. “I don’t really have any favourite causes, at the moment I’m doing a lot of work for Oxfam but I’m involved with a lot of local charities as well. In general there’s no such thing as a bad charity. Everyone’s in the same boat, they’re all in the same financial position. Ultimately lots of events don’t go ahead because they lack volunteers, and these events are essential to their fundraising. “The Facebook and Twitter have taken off but they probably need more publicity. It’d be great for all the events in Brighton to get involved and use it; it’s a free service after all, for both event organisers and people who want to volunteer their services.”

THE REASONS

Many good years of late nights and fun times had left my body broken – suspected rheumatoid arthritis, possible coeliac disease and a myriad of niggling health problems for which the only recommendation was a lifetime of painkillers. After a few years of unenlightening NHS tests and scans I gave up on conventional medicine and consulted a nutritional therapist in the hope that they could succeed where my GP had failed and mend me.

THE EXPERIENCE

watching my friends getting twatted and scoffing burgers while I ate a rice cake and did shots of cider vinegar. Nothing was on at the cinema so I cancelled my birthday and spent the night catching up on the washing up and feeling a bit sorry for myself. The next day, hoping to put it behind me, I went to visit my in-laws. They presented me with a birthday cake. I watched them eat it whilst silently wishing they’d choke on it. It looked delicious. I was starting to feel a bit stabby.

“I was necking 20 pills a day... antifungal supplements”

I went to my first appointment knowing that I was probably saying goodbye to all the good things in life. I’d already given up gluten a few months previously, which meant waving farewell to the delights of biscuits, bread and cakes. After some tests I was told I had candidiasis (and no, that doesn’t mean I have thrush), which was probably responsible for all my random symptoms. As expected I was sent home with a list of foods to avoid. Gluten was still off limits, but in addition I couldn’t eat any dairy, sugar or caffeine. Drink, drugs and smoking were banned too, of course. I really, really like biscuits, and giving up gluten had been hard. But at least I could compensate by eating loads of cream, chocolate and crisps. Not any more. However, I was buoyed by receiving a diagnosis at last so I got stuck into my new diet, hitting Infinity Foods and stocking up on alternative carbohydrates like millet and buckwheat whilst eavesdropping an argument about jazz between two men wearing tie-dye jerkins and patchouli sandals. Now, I’m not much of a cook and the instructions on the side of my buckwheat packet weren’t particularly instructional. After attempting a salad which my other half described as ‘the worst thing I’ve ever tasted’ I realised this was going to be difficult. It appears that virtually every single item of food you can buy in the supermarket has sugar, or sweeteners, or gluten, or some kind of weird additive or refinement that makes it bad news. That meant that I couldn’t buy anything in a packet, and every single meal would need to be made from scratch. Not only that, I could no longer pop into the corner shop and grab a bag of crisps because I’d stayed out late and missed dinner. Convenience and me were no longer friends. Spontaneity went out the window as I became one of those mum types who carry round Tupperware containers of warm carrot sticks and houmous. My weekly shop became a daily chore as my bank card was repeatedly raped by the Infinity tills. The endless cooking and washing up left me with no time for friends or fun, which was lucky because I had no money for the pub anyway. And the pub is shit when you’re sober, and can’t even eat peanuts.

House calls became a thing of the past as I grew tired of refusing tea and biscuits, and explaining myself endlessly. Interfering relatives listened sceptically and quoted ‘Bad Science’ at me, disregarding my improving health in favour of advocating ‘everything in moderation’, whilst pushing plates of cheese on toast toward me. Being a bit shy I’m a great believer in the social crutch, and there isn’t a single activity in the world that isn’t enhanced by a glass of whisky and lemonade, or something stronger. My birthday was coming up and I realised that having a barbecue, picnic or party would result in

www.brightonsource.co.uk/FEATURES

My life was now a tedious grind of chopping vegetables, counting out vitamin supplements, reading labels, finding new and exciting ways to cook tofu. ‘If it looks nice I’m not allowed it’ was my catchphrase as I desperately read menus looking for something, anything, I could eat. I longed for a slice of buttery toast, meringues and cream, chocolates, a cup of tea. Walking past a pub on a sunny afternoon left me wretched as the smell of pool and drunken foolishness wafted out the door to taunt me.

Apparently (and I don’t care if this is bad science) the treatment causes your liver to be flooded with toxic crap and when your liver gets overloaded you’re prone to ‘emotional outbursts’. My liver was already marinated in party toxins so it’s no wonder that the treatment sent me over the edge. For two days a week I veered between desperate sobbing, “I just want a piece of cake/shot of Tuaca/36-hour drink and drug binge”, to having to leave work in case I shouted at my colleagues, or worse, a client. It was like the worst PMT imaginable. A summer itinerary of weddings and festivals made life even trickier. Going to a party and watching your friends getting pissed and exclaiming over rad-looking puddings while you’re restricted to eating an olive gets a bit wearing, but keeping it together at a festival is almost impossible. My military planning was to no avail as pre-prepared tubs of salad wilted in the heat, and ham and chicken turned an ominous shade of green. Luckily I could enjoy emergency rice cakes and pumpkin seed butter. For three fucking days. In the old days I just wouldn’t eat but that isn’t really possible without substance abuse to get you through. Festivals and drugs go hand in hand, and the lack of chemical enhancement left me feeling excluded from the experience as I watched the mayhem unfold around me. I was necking 20 pills a day, but antifungal supplements are rubbish for getting messy and dancing. I went back to the nutritionist and pulled a sad face and talked about cake. She offered me a sliver of hope in the shape of ‘Carrot Bread’ - a tempting treat made from carrots, xylitol and pumpkin seeds. It looked as though someone had sicked in a cake tin. It’s a telling sign of how desperate my life has become that I now look forward to that twice-weekly slice of savoury carrot filth like a sailor on shore leave looks forward to a disease-ridden whore.

WAS IT WORTH IT?

After two months I’m completely skint (those supplements don’t come cheap) and I can’t even remember the last time I really enjoyed eating anything. However, my resolve was strengthened when I snapped and ate a piece of buttery shortbread. The next day I felt dismal, and I remembered that I’d felt that ill constantly prior to starting the treatment. I’m not better yet, but everything hurts less than it used to, and I know that I’m doing the right thing. I’m still a shit cook but I’ve doubled my repertoire of meals, I’ve lost stacks of weight so the dress I bought last year in Beyond Retro in a hopeful moment now fits me, and one day I will eat cake again.

STREET STYLE WOrds by nick coquet photo by lomokev for lomokev.com

Often when people are influenced by what they take to be 60s fashion they get the wrong end of the stick, dressing in fabrics and jarring patterns your nan might well have hung as curtains but certainly never worn on the street. On the whole, archetypal 60s styling was simple, unfussy and complementary with an emphasis on a minimal cut. The crazy clothing free-for-all would arrive later with the hippies and flower power, as fashion committed the cardinal sin of just letting itself all hang out. Had Mary Quant been dead she’d have turned in her grave. Mar Sendra is a Spanish bartender at the Big Chill Bar in London’s Brick Lane, pictured here on just her third visit to Brighton – “It’s a lovely place,” she says. While this striking red outfit isn’t her only colour choice, she tends to keep it simple with occasional greens, blacks and whites. The fashions of the 60s might well have originated in Swinging London but they clearly touched hipsters throughout Europe, as this largely Spanish-sourced collection shows. Cardigan from vintage store in Brick Lane. “I like it because the white edge reminds me of my grandmother’s cardigans. I usually wear clothes from the 60s – this reminds me of her as a young lady.” Dress from Maria Del Mar “It’s a children’s clothes store my mother owns in my birthplace, Tarragoma in Spain.” Tights from H&M “I was working there for a few years so I had loads of coloured tights. I used to wear them often – not just in red, in many colours.” Shoes and bag from Carnaby “These are from my Auntie’s vintage store, also in Tarragoma, called Carnaby – after the street.”

UNSUNG HERO

100 PEOPLE WHO MAKE BRIGHTON WHAT IT IS:

NO.22 SU HARDY WORDS BY JAMES KENDALL

The Mooncup MD has been offering an ethical alternative to tampons for nearly a decade.

Where did the idea for the Mooncup come from?
Menstrual cups have been around since the 1930s and I first came across them when I was backpacking in Australia. When I came back I started making my own out of more modern materials. The original ones were made out of latex rubber and I found that some women were allergic to those so I had a factory make them out of silicone. How many have you sold? Hundreds of thousands of them! We’ve been going since 2002 and have sold Mooncups to women all over the world – 65 different countries, all over Europe and other places like South Africa.

What are the benefits? My main interest to start with was environmental. Because you have one Mooncup, you empty it and then use the same one over and over again. There’s nothing to throw away, no waste, no packaging every month. But there are other benefits. After about four months it pays for itself. There’s no drying so it’s much better for your vagina. It’s more comfortable, it’s more convenient. It ticks all the boxes: it’s safer, greener and cheaper.

What sort of women use it? Green and ethical women were the pioneers. But now it’s really mainstream. We have customers who certainly wouldn’t consider themselves to be hippies. Women hear about it from their friends and they’re really enthusiastic about it. Our customers tend to be real evangelists actually. Is it an ethical mission or a business first? I would say it’s an ethical mission first. If you wanted to have a business to make money you wouldn’t produce something that’s as difficult to sell as a Mooncup and that had no repeat sales. As a business proposition it’s not a particularly good one! You’ve won loads of awards, but what’s been your proudest moment? Winning the Women In Ethical Business Award probably because the Eve Magazine readers actually voted for the Mooncup. I think that there’s something quite special about the fact it came from the public.

ALOKA

14 East St (01273) 823178 Mon-Fri 8:30am-9:30pm, Sat-Sun 10am-9:30pm

THE PLACE

Contrary to expectations, we’re not all about destroying our bodies at SOURCE. Yeah, we have more than our fair share of hangovers and late night kebabs but several of the SOURCE team had been to Aloka for lunches and raved about their healthy buffet. First thing to note, this isn’t a place to eat – it’s a “Quality Of Life Centre, dedicated to giving you physical, mental, emotional and spiritual nourishment.” OK, then. What that means is that there’s a day spa and yoga studio as well as a café downstairs and a restaurant upstairs.

THE MEAL

Not only is Aloka vegan – even their ice cream is made out of nuts, somehow – it also favours not cooking stuff at all. It’s not all raw food, but if you shun the cooker this place is a godsend.

With that in mind we kick off with raw chips and dips (£5.75), where the Doritos have been swapped for flax crackers and the blue cheese has been replaced by a fresh, lively apricot-based number like melting sorbet. So far, so odd. The staff are extremely helpful when our fellow reviewer explains her dietary requirements, even sending the chef out to talk through the menu. Overall the service is very Zen, although this made us slightly tetchy as we had to be elsewhere. For mains we opt for the chef’s special (£13.75) – a garlic and mushroom tart made with pecan pastry. It’s artfully laid out and tasty with a variety of crisp veg. The Zen Buddha bowl (£12.50) doesn’t go down so well, unfortunately. Brown rice, al dente vegetables and sloppy tofu in miso soup lacks a flavour focal point to get us past all that healthiness.

THE VERDICT

Not without good reason were Aloka a winner of a Best Eating Out Award from the Vegetarian Society last year. If it’s up your street you’ll love Aloka. But this place isn’t for everyone so order carefully, or maybe try the buffet before diving right in. And if you eat a la carte make sure you leave plenty of time to relax into the serenity.

WERE WE SUSSED?

The food took a long time to come – especially considering so much is uncooked! – and we sort of ran off halfway through our meal to get to our other appointment. So they probably thought we were mad or rude rather than reviewers.

FRESH FROM SOME HUGE REMIXES FOR FATBOY SLIM, SCRATCH DJ JFB IS BACK IN THE DMC WORLD FINAL WORDs AND PHOTO by JAMES KENDALL You won the UK DMC championship again. Did you even tell anyone you were entering? I decided to enter a couple of weeks before the last heat. I wanted to do the last few years as well but just didn’t have the time or patience to do it. You’re allowed to use [DJing software] Serato so you didn’t have to press records this year, which is awesome. I entered the Plymouth heat and won that, which put me through to the UK final and I won that. What was the routine like? It starts off with a track from The Qemists – well, bits and bobs of it – with lots of samples of Beardyman that I do lots of tricks with. There’s a YouTube keyboard star called Ronald Jenkees. I emailed him to see if he’d send me the separate parts for the competition and he was really overly friendly and sent them to me right away. Then it goes into the Enter The Dragon music from the Bruce Lee film and a dubstep thing that I got the parts for. Then there’s more dubstep before going into the commercial bit, the Nero track ‘Me & You’ which I beat-juggle. Then it goes into a really techy beatjuggling thing at the end and finally into a scratch.

You’ve always been interested in technology. Are other turntablists catching up to your way of thinking? Well, I think everyone in the UK final used Serato and I reckon every single one of them had created pre-made sets. In the heat that I did in Plymouth there was only one guy using real records all the way through. Do you have to make a new set for the DMC final in October? Most people do the same set but I’m going to change mine. The people I was up against in the UK were good but the guys in the world finals are just ridiculous. There are two of my scratch idols that I’m up against. I’m working hard to get better cos at the moment I’m shit compared to some of the other guys. It would take me three years of practice to beat those two but I’m practicing all day, apart from eight hours sleep and tea breaks.

You seem to be doing a lot more production. How’s that going? Phew. So has crate digging changed then, away from record I’ve been very lucky actually. Beardyman had his album shops onto the internet, getting the separate parts? out and he’s chucked me loads of remixes and I’ve been You can look at it loads of different ways. Turntablists still doit the really fortunate with Fatboy Slim. I’d been doing some old way. Occasionally I will too, but I prefer to dig around on stuff for Skint and they offered me the ‘Right Here, Right YouTube and online instead and make the music out of other Now’ remix last year. I did a dubstep mix and I finished it people’s music. Then alter it for scratching so I can do more at 11am and emailed it to Skint. They sent it to Norman technical things. Or you can make things easier for you to use, so Cook and he texted me a couple of hours later saying, it sounds nicer to listen to. Not using just vinyl does take away a bit ‘This is brilliant, I’m going to play it tonight on Radio 1.’ of the traditional sense of turntablism a bit – taking one or two Skint put it out as an exclusive on Juno at 9.30pm and the records of other people’s music next day it got to No.1 in the Juno and making it different with your chart. I was quite chuffed with that. hands here and there. SIX OF THE BEST

STONER ANTHEMS

WORDS BY NICK COQUET, BEN MILLER, JAMES KENDALL, JESSICA MARSHALL MCHATTIE

Tiny holes in the duvet, shifty red eyes and the presence of more than one Orb CD on the shelf – all telltale signs of a stoner. Every illicit substance has its own soundtracks and endorsements in song, but six of the best crack cocaine headfuck anthems wouldn’t really be in keeping with our gentle hippie issue…

PRIMAL SCREAM ‘HIGHER THAN THE SUN’

Given the band’s non-prescription propensity at the time, this could actually be a paean to any number of uppers, downers or hanging-arounders as it announces “I’ve glimpsed, I have tasted, fantastical places”. But any song presented as a ‘dub symphony in two parts’, as it re-appears later on ‘Screamadelica’, is going to suggest more supine appreciation than its more up-tempo album companions. Production by The Orb, purveyors of some fairly spliffy 90s moments themselves, seals the stoner deal. A lengthy and classic highlight of a truly epoch-making album. (NC)

BOMB THE BASS

‘Bug Powder Dust(La Funk Mob Remix)’

We’re not sure precisely when La Funk Mob got their hands on ‘Bug Powder Dust’ [er, on the 1994 single which also included a great Kruder & Dorfmeister mix – Ed], an unremarkable spurt of rap rock from Bomb The Bass’s ‘Clear’ album, but it was the sound of countless afternoons on beds and hills, staring into hazy abysses. Justin Warfield’s mumbo-jumbo lyrics (there’s at least one website devoted to deciphering them) are based on William S Burroughs’ ‘Naked Lunch’, replete with endless drug references. And as a zoned-out hip hop reworking, it’s a tune in its own right. (BM)

PINK FLOYD

‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’

Well, we couldn’t not put it in, right? You’ll notice that it’s the only entire album on the list – this simply isn’t a record you can pull tracks out of willy nilly. Even the band knew this; when we saw them at Earls Court in 1994 they did a bunch of new stuff and old hits, then came back on and played this. The whole album from start to finish, with lights and lasers and strobes and dry ice and

Page 62

tricky

an actual crashing plane. We watched on from our regal box, with some particularly potent cannabis oil as we recall. (NC)

TRICKY ‘Overcome’

In typical slacker behaviour ‘Overcome’ is a remake of Massive Attack’s ‘Karmacoma’ from the year before that Tricky hadn’t got around to writing the lyrics for. But this outclasses his former bandmates’ production with smokerfriendly, low-slung beats and bedroom-sultriness (the ‘Maxinquaye’ LP was the only thing that got stoners off the sofa and into bed in 1995). Multi-layered – letting your head wander off – there’s a fug of smoke drifting through the whole thing even before teenage singer Martina drops a reference to “Jamaica aroma”. (JK)

JEHST ‘Return Of The Drifter’

This very British rapper brought the gritty real life of a London hip hop chap to the mainstream in 2002 with ‘Return of the Drifter,’ with witty lines about “living with benefit cheats and no-hopers/deadbeats who sleep on their sofas” and “bunnin’ zoots of skunk” enlivening many a smoky bedroom. Designed to make you nod throughout and really, like, get what he’s saying man, this track embodies the beatification of setting the world to rights after a few more cans of lager. (JMM)

CYPRESS HILL ‘Hits From The Bong’

This ‘Son Of A Preacher Man’-sampling, ‘Black Sunday’ album track is less of a song and more a public information advert for weed smokers. “There’s water inside don’t spill it/It smells like shit on the carpet,” B-Real suggests in a nasal voice that we don’t remember grating so intensely while we were baked. Pretty lazy lyric writing but it persuaded three million teenage boys to finally get their shit together and get down the record shop with money they’d normally have spent on a ‘teenth. (JK)

And if none of these float your bong, you could always check out weed-core death metallers Cannabis Corpse at the Hydrant on Friday 2nd.
