stop Bloody moaning

Right, that’s enough lounging around on the sofa under a duvet moaning about having the sniffles – spring is here. We’ve made it through another winter and now it’s time to get out there and start having fun again. With that in mind we’ve extended our gig previews section to almost double its size, letting you know about more of the great bands that visit our fair city as well as highlighting more local bands. In addition to wedging that in we’ve also found space for the return of SOURCE Virgins, the feature you guys are always asking to have back. If you’ve not seen it before, we try out new experiences and let you know what they’re like, mainly so you don’t have to embarrass yourself doing them. Usually it involves some nakedness from our deputy editor and true to form his cock stars again this month. We’re not saying Never Seen Star Wars on BBC4/Radio 4 ripped us off, but if you’ve seen that Johnny-come-lately version you’ll kind of know what to expect. Although ours is sometimes funny.

SINGING, BOOZING, BIDDING, SHMOOZING WORDS BY Nick Coquet, Dan Pearce, Pia Webley

MIDWEEK MADONNA MURDERING

Private karaoke venue Lucky Voice is offering 50% off room hire on Wednesdays to those brilliant enough to have a Brighton postcode (either home or work). Embarrass yourself in front of your colleagues, friends and housemates and select your favourite songs to massacre from an extensive collection. What a lovely excuse to break up the midweek monotony with a good old sing song.

GOT ANY QUO?

Brighton Record & CD Fair is back at the Brighton Centre on Sunday 21st, with 130 stalls over two floors. Sift through the crates for that original copy of ‘Trout Mask Replica’ that you can pretend to have liked for years or just complete your Adam Ant 7” collection, all at reasonable prices. It’s a good thing in the age of the download that dealers and collectors still have the choice to buy and sell in the hands-on environment of fairs. Open 9.30am til 4pm.

NOT JUST BEARDY BOOZE

The Campaign For Real Ale are hosting the Sussex Beer & Cider Festival at Hove Centre, from Thursday 11th to Saturday 13th. This year’s festival features an impressive selection of ciders, perries, country wines and British and foreign bottled beers. The downstairs bar has been designated as the Sussex Bar and will be exclusively stocking beers brewed in our very own home town. It’s always a popular event so be sure to check the website for tickets – sussexbeerfestival.co.uk. (See In Conversation With, page 46)

OCEAN AUCTION

If you fancy yourself as a bit of a Peter Stringfellow, start growing that ratty mullet, gather yourself some bimbo eye candy and get bidding for the Ocean Rooms – the recently troubled venue is being auctioned off on Friday 5th. A planned £100m redevelopment of the surrounding area, taking in the Uni annexe, NCP car park and all around there, could mean you end up with some prime real estate. It’s expected to go for around £750,000, so don’t go into the auction and accidentally scratch your nose or you might find yourself lumbered with a bit of an unplanned cashflow crisis.

KIDS FROM FAME

Now in its 86th year, Springboard, Brighton and Hove’s Youth Performing Arts Festival, hits town this month. With music, drama and dance spread across Brighton & Hove High School, Roedean School and the Old Market, it’s a good chance to encourage our talented youngsters with some applause and recognition. From Sunday 14th-21st, with dance highlights at the Dome in April – type theoldmarket. co.uk into your internet machine to find out more.

KEEP IT QUIRKY

Here at SOURCE we quite like the idea of sticking it to The Man. While we obviously have to have big corporate shops in Brighton to attract outsider shopper drones, it’s really important for the city to retain its character and reputation for quirky and creative outlets too. If this is something that floats your boat too, there’s a new website at keepbrightonunique. org, which will help you direct your energies towards tasty local bacon rolls rather than evil Big Macs.

JIMMY!

If, like us, you could never watch Phil Daniels on EastEnders without picturing him totalling Sting’s scooter, shagging Leslie Ash and gobbling pills like TicTacs, then the news that he’s written a book called Class Actor will be mod music to your ears. But better still, you can bother him in person when he signs copies at Waterstones on Sunday 6th at 2pm. Don’t try and drag him down ‘that’ alley though, ladies.

CLASS SHOWING

Got a job or at Uni? See your taxes at work or shamelessly copy work off other students – it’s a win/win situation for all who visit Here And Now Part II, a photography, performance and visual arts exhibition of work from second year students at the University of Brighton. Get down to the Uni Gallery on Grand Parade from Tuesday 16th and grab yourself a piece of the arts action.

HONEY CLUB

GUILTY PLEASURES

MAMMOTH COFFEE

MARWOOD CAFÉ

It’s all go down the seafront as the Honey Club unveils a lavish refurbishment, including sumptuous new furnishings as well as a luxurious VIP area which you can gaze longingly into or smugly out of, depending on your social standing in clubland. Highlights on the Honey’s schedule for the near future include Kiss Da Funk, back from Leeds on Friday 19th with Rob Tissera at the controls, and Freemasons, playing their pumping funky house at Sevensins on Saturday 6th.

As longstanding advocates of Starbucks avoidance, we’re happy to bring you news of a new independent caffeine outlet that’s opened, nicely outside the Mocha-in-every-other-shop confines of the city centre. Mammoth Coffee is at 35 Ditchling Road opposite The Level, and instead of raping the local retail landscape with identikit could-be-anywhere offerings, it’s buzzing with local creativity and high-end liquid jump-start, sandwiches and desserts. Artists and musicians are already a weekly thing, and they’re expanding into kids’ story hours, language swaps and scrap book parties.

Share your shame and rejoice as national treasure Guilty Pleasures starts up a monthly residency at Komedia on Saturday 6th, having swept across festivals and clubs over the country in the past four years from humble beginnings at a working men’s club in Hammersmith. Confess online to your easy listening habits along with celebrities from Russell Brand to Suggs and Sophie Ellis-Bextor – this night promises to celebrate with glittering pomp all those long lost hits, so dust off your dancing shoes and make a shameless tit of yourself prancing about to Spandau Ballet.

A new fortnightly music night at Marwood Café on Ship Street hosts an array of performers, starting with poetry and ending with the in-house band Golden Sounds, not forgetting the singers, MCs and beatboxers in between. A small but very charismatic venue offers the chance of a more sophisticated gig experience on the first and third Wednesday of each month. Watching the bands won’t cost you a penny to get in, but if you do enjoy yourself a donation upon leaving is welcomed.

APRES VOUS RECORDS

COACHWERKS

A fledgling new music label collective spanning Brighton and Camberley, Apres Vous began by giving friends’ bands a leg up in touting their wares. Co-founded by members of Hold Your Horse Is and Jealous Again, keep your ears to the ground for more seminal acts soon to be unearthed. The first of this month sees the release of Brighton’s own Crooked Mountain, Crooked Sea’s latest E.P ‘It’s The Falling That Counts, Not the Landing’, available via mail order and iTunes.

It’s been an ongoing project for a while now, but building at Coachwerks is finally nearing completion. Taking over a disused bus garage, with the aid of volunteers, they have transformed the area into a public space comprising creative studios, a community cafe and a small venue. A regular timetable of events and workshops, screenprinting, photographic darkrooms, performance studios and sound recording are all available. Get in touch and volunteer, or realise projects of your own. For more information visit coachwerks.org.uk.

BRIGHTON GUITARS

SPONSORED WAX OFF

Migrated from their former home above To Be Worn Again, Brighton Guitars has resurfaced in a new, three-floor premises at the other end of Sydney Street. With new acoustic and vintage rooms, as well as widening their electric and second hand ranges, they’re also doing guitar lessons for kids and advanced students and planning singer songwriter gigs in the garden when the weather warms up. All this and their noticeboard makes for a great outreach service for anyone on the local guitar scene.

Page 6

As part of a wider campaign to raise much needed funds for The St Martlets Hospice, one local resident is holding a beard-tastic fundraiser at The Loft on Friday 5th, daring the hairiest in our community to shave against cancer. Not exclusive to men, ladies and the follically-challenged are encouraged to come and help with the mammoth task of waxing fifty sponsored bearded wonders upon donation. The entry fee is up to you so dig deep and help this worthy pursuit.

SHOOTING BLANKS

Did you run out of steam after tarting up the rest of the magazine and decide you couldn’t be bothered to design an advert asking for interns? I thought you missed out a page to start with then I noticed the tiny words. I’ve got a job so I don’t really care but wouldn’t you have had a better response if you put a proper advert in? Anyway, the rest of the mag looks good. But what I was going to say was how much does Bob Mould look like Steve Jobs on the letters page? Lee, via brightonsource.co.uk Actually Lee we had an amazing response to the minimal intern advert, so much so that we’re gonna have to say we’re closing our doors for a few months.

LOOKING SHARP

Enjoyed the new look source mag! Saw the mags flying off the shelf at the Eagle pub the other day whilst eating a chicken pie @audiobrighton via twitter Thanks Audio, we really hope that it makes the magazine more accessible and useful. Props to our designer for going all sensible and practical and not hunting out snazzy but unreadable fonts. Have a pat on the back Matt.

PRJCT CMPLT

Our debut EP is finished, gonna be released in April. Stay tuned for more details. And check out our new blog – bootygalaxy. wordpress.com/ @prjctmytmblud via Twitter Alongside Transformer’s album, PJCT MYHM’s EP has got to be one of the most exciting debuts on the calendar, Thanks for letting us know guys, we’ll review it next month.

Thanks for your snobby, stuck-up New In Town section in the February issue. “Vulgar pikeys”? “B&H-reeking, overly competitive pensioner proles”? Does Nick Coquet really hate poor people, or was he trying to be funny? When it’s well written I’m all for a bit of bite, but printing this makes you seem like a bunch of nasty, smug journalists, and you do yourselves no credit. Nice mag otherwise, Jocelyn, via email Sorry to have caused offence Jocelyn but pikeys and proles aren’t poor people, they’re people without decorum or style. Completely different. We can promise you we’re all a lot poorer than we are smug over here at SOURCE. Nick’s lovely and was just being sassy. But he does reek of B&H. Letter Of The Month wins a case of Pear Cider from our good friends at Magners.

ROAST ROUND UP RESPONSE ROUND UP

Enjoyed your roundup of best pubs for Sunday roasts, but you missed out my favourites, Dover Castle and Earth & Stars! @rosieclarke via Twitter Best roast? Not the Sidewinder, they once had Zebra on the menu, far too fucking stripy. All about the Yeoman, you pay a premium but it’s worth it for the high grade pile of food that ends up on your table. @BenPetrucci via Twitter Earth And Stars – it’s almost as good as I make at home. Avoid The Basketmakers it’s vile... @ItWasDarkDaze via Twitter The Basketmakers is best – massive portions, best pub in town, all the trimmings. And cheesy leeks (they’re good, honest!) @RobOrchard via Twitter The Royal Sovereign on Preston Street, huge roasts that feel like restaurant food, parsnip crisps on top and “real” gravy! @Laurence_Conrad via Twitter We counted 14 different types of vegetable with our last roast @ The Windmill! Surely a record? @The_Recommender via Twitter Loads of feedback on this feature so we’ll take it in order. The Earth & Stars was highly recommended towards the end of the feature Rosie, and we’ll definitely be there next year. There’s a new chef at The Sidewinder Ben, so don’t be scared. DarkDaze vs Rob Orchard – interesting responses there, we fall right in the middle. We’d heard so much good stuff about the Sov, Laurence, that we headed over there (see page 44). Amazing. Can anyone beat The Recommender’s 2.8 days of five-a-day record?

THE XX

Komedia Mon 1st

Look up the word hype in the dictionary and it now says “see The XX”, so generous is the buzz that’s followed this band around over the last year. They topped many magazine and blog ‘Best Of’ lists for 2009, following their self-titled release in August. We had previously caught them at Loop festival and have to admit they looked a little lost on the Dome’s larger stage, a fact they’ll have to remedy if they continue their ascendancy, but at least the Komedia will be suitably intimate. (TR)

DIZZEE RASCAL Brighton Centre Tues 2nd

Has Dizzee sold out? If an alien were to sit down at SOURCE HQ this afternoon and listen to his Mercury-winning debut ‘Boy In Da Corner‘ – all stabbing beats and rhymes with shanking tales to match – back-to-back with the chart-topping 18-30 Ibiza hip hop of his most recent effort, ‘Tongue N Cheek’, puzzled looks would surely follow and not just because of the crashed spaceship in Queen’s Gardens. However, ET’s first observation would surely be “Who’s this wanker Calvin Harris?” (BG)

VELO

Jam Weds 3rd

Following their successful launch party, one of Brighton’s best barometers of new music, The Recommender blog, showcases its next suggestion. This time around it’s Velo, rising stars in the London music scene, with their polished synth pop. Brighton band :Kinema: will prove ideal support with their equally glossy workout. In addition Eleni Mettyear’s photobooth returns, ready to capture all you exhibitionists. Lastly, don’t forget to grab your free, exclusive mixtape, handed out at the end of each night. (MB)

MIKA

Brighton Centre Weds 3rd

“Let him go off and club with every supermodel in London and rest on the cool laurels that he has laid for himself like prickly thorns.” Not the words of Jesus in the Really New Testament but fresh from Mika’s mouth. He, understandably, took great offence at Alan “I discovered Oasis” McGee’s recent suggestion that the infernally bright and chipper star “should have been shot at birth”. Harsh words, admittedly. But wrong? No worse than digging up the Gallagher brothers, surely. (BG)

TUBELORD

Freebutt Weds 3rd

Kingston-based Tubelord are often to be found as a support or headline act in The Freebutt, but we have no compunction about thoroughly endorsing them every time they do. As part of One Inch Badge’s line-up, they promote an ethic of Brighton-centered musical brilliance as well as an amazing mash of melodic, hook-filled rock and arse-kicking guitar riffs. Put on your skinniest jeans and catch them while you can at an intimate venue. (NH)

LITTLE DRAGON

Coalition Wed 3rd

Now, Sweden churns out its fair share of melodic pop bands, however Little Dragon are clearly a new breed, successfully reviving the soulful-rhythmic-electronic sound circa 2006. Despite the name conjuring images of fierce mythological creatures, Little Dragon are polite, somewhat spiritual, wholesome, vegan Swedes (sans clichés) and clean… until they start performing. If you’ve ever been lucky enough to catch them live, you’ll know to expect dirty funk, wild cowbells and a tight, wild sweat pit of smiles (sauna not required). (DE)

BLOOD RED SHOES Komedia Fri 5th

One of the warmest moments of last year’s Breeders-curated All Tomorrow’s Parties festival was seeing both Blood Red Shoes and Foals making it onto the bill. As well as a swelling of Brighton pride, it was heartening that all those formative years spent peddling Cat On Form and The Edmund Fitzgerald singles to inebriated ATP punters had finally come to apt fruition with a suitable billing. Anyway, Blood Red Shoes are back in town, promoting their new, rather shiny garage pop album ‘Fire Like This’ at Brighton’s most eagerly-awaited comeback show this month (sorry, Doll & The Kicks at Audio on Saturday 6th). (SH)

MEMORY TAPES

Freebutt Tues 9th

With his debut album ‘Seek Magic’, New Jersey-based Dayve Hawk, former frontman of Philadelphia-based Hail Social, finally got serious. Merging previous aliases Memory Cassette and Weird Tapes into one dazzling whole, the album’s centrepiece, ‘Bicycle’, is amongst 2009’s most emphatic and brilliant singles, the kind of melancholic yet hands-in-the-air electro-pop exultation New Order used to make before they changed their name to Bad Lieutenant and still couldn’t get arrested. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss, then. (BG)

GRIZZLY BEAR Corn Exchange Thurs 11th

Page 12

Grizzly Bear, who, with 2009’s lush and swooning ‘Veckatimest’, proved that not all guitar bands on Warp have to be Maximo Park. Opening up are Beach House, who look to steal this year’s plaudits for themselves with the equally hymnal dream-pop of knockout new album ‘Teen Dream’. SOURCE is unsure who will come out on top tonight. You, probably, if you’re going. (BG)

MUMFORD AND SONS Corn Exchange Fri 12th

The skyrocketing popularity of these folk rockers is clearly shown in their rapid upward movement through the venues of Brighton. They’re now comfortably filling The Corn Exchange as part of a very sold out UK tour, which is then launching them across Europe and presumably on to total world domination. It’s difficult to say whether the Corn Exchange is a bit staid a venue for a band who inevitably inspire a good deal of whirling and jigging from the crowd, but whatever happens is guaranteed to be utterly enchanting. (NH)

WHY?

Komedia Sun 14th

Ohio anti-folk hip hop band Why? return to the UK after their latest release, ‘Eskimo Snow’, their fourth and most softly brooding work in the 11 years they’ve existed. We’re ecstatically excited to experience their razor-sharp lyricism, beautiful timing, unusual time signatures, expressive fluctuating keyboard melodies and contemplative, bittersweet life attitude live on stage. The scary looking person fighting their way to the front and singing violently along to ‘The Hollows’ will be us, but we imagine we’ll be one of many. (NH)

SPECTRUM

Freebutt Tues 16th

You have been warned - things are about to get trippy at The Freebutt as former Spaceman 3 man Pete Kember (aka Sonic Boom) makes a welcome return under his Spectrum moniker for an evening of mind-expanding and acid-drenched psych. With a new album ‘On The Wings Of Mercury’ set for release later in the year, expect to hear new material plus a hefty dose of back catalogue classics from one of the country’s true sonic mavericks. A stupendous month in music for Brighton is topped by oneman ecstasy dance hero Kieran Hebdon. He comes armed with terrific new album ‘There Is Love In You’, a near perfect rainbow distillation of his hypnotic sonic glitterdust. Live shows are an exhibition in tech dexterity, sometimes hard, sometimes soft, usually staggering. We suggest you also check out ‘Moth’, the recent limited edition 12” with dubstep kingpin Burial, which proved an unmissable meeting of two of our greatest 21st century electronic minds. (BG)

AUTECHRE

Pavilion Theatre Thurs 18th

When the Dome box office announced this rare appearance by the secretive Manc pair, the flow of excitable messageboard chatter took even seasoned IDM posters by surprise. Rob Brown and Sean Booth’s limelight-eschewing personas, coupled with their run of uncompromising noughties albums, have made Autechre Warp’s most celebrated cult artists. Amongst those helping shake the foundations tonight are Rob Hall – one of Booth and Brown’s cohorts in the Gescom project – and extreme noise artist Russell Haswell. (SH)

THOMAS TRUAX

Freebutt Fri 19th

Straight outta Wowtown, one-man steampunk band Thomas Truax is famed for his array of bizarre homemade instruments, including amped-up gramophone mutant The Hornicator and much abused flywheel rhythm box Sister Spinster. Truax affectionately treats his Heath Robinson inventions as musicians in their own right, arguing and apologising to them throughout his performances. His most recent, self-explanatory album ‘Songs From The Films Of David Lynch’ upped Truax’s profile considerably, putting scores under the influence of this most charming man. (SH)

EDITORS

Dome Sat 20th

The enigmatic Editors are back touring their latest album, ‘In This Light And On This Evening’. For a Brummie band whose quiet but bold presence has easily filled the main stage at countless festivals since their first album, they are still somewhat underrated in the nation’s consciousness. Expect the Dome to provide the perfect luxurious backdrop for these smartly-dressed young men in their continually rich balance of orchestral, anthemic rock and pulsing, room-shaking electro-tinged laments. (NH)

BRUISE

Three and Ten Sat 20th

The fantastic Bruise rarely play outside of London, except perhaps on the summer festival circuit, so it’s essential that you catch them here while you can. They’re an amazing mix of very simply arranged rock music, with a richness and dexterity that’s showstopping. Singer Isobel has a way of blowing your head off with thoughtprovoking lyrics blasted effortlessly from her powerful lungs, backed by delicate and expressive guitar. An unsettling and atmospheric set is guaranteed, plus some euphoric new material to boot. (NH)

Nachtmystium’s American black metal will provide this for you without the embarrassing white face paint and spike-wristed posturing of this genre’s bands of old. Stupid names aside, there’s a fair bit of talent and originality crammed into this pair of Essex boys. Dan Le Sac meanwhile fills in the rest with beats and samples, regularly matching Pip’s resourcefulness. (TR)

POPE JOAN Pontificating on the rise of brighton’s indie popstars Words by james kendall photo by kevin mason at garage studios

From day one we’ve had a soft spot for Pope Joan. An enjoyably scratchy post punk band who compliment their angular riffs with quirky synths, their songs rattled along in a whirl of slashed guitars and shouting. Their debut release, eight-track mini-album ‘Hot Water, Lines & Rickey Machines’ had a raw charm, especially the jerky chant along of ‘No TV’. All well and good, but if we’re honest we didn’t peg them for huge things. Then ‘Centurions’ happened. Cock-sure electro pop with insistent guitar lines and a killer chorus, it showed that they could write songs – real singalong, stick-in-your-head songs. In our

Page 18

contributor-voted Best Of 2009 chart, only The Maccabees and Bat For Lashes polled higher. Now they were a very exciting prospect indeed. “It was the first track we made after the mini-album and was the starting point of a new approach,” explains singer and guitarist Sammy Aaron Jr. “It was a watershed moment really, what’s been has been and we don’t worry about looking back on it,” adds David Coomber, responsible for the bass and some of the synths.

www.brightonsource.co.uk/BANDS

“Now we’re much better at letting the song breathe rather than putting in the part that we want to play,” reckons drummer Andre Millin. New single ‘Dictator’ is probably their most stripped back, relaxed, song-like track yet. Gentle, but with that same tautness, it shows that their way with melodies works at speeds other than ‘breakneck’ – another sign that the band are growing. “It was knocking about the same time as ‘Centurions’,” says Sammy. “It came together quickly on our second go at it.” The new version has come from working with Cribs and Biffy Cyro producer Mark Williams in a strange, but cost effective, set up. Pope Joan self-record their stuff in practice rooms, bedrooms and The Freebutt and then send them to Mark for mixing. It’s a clever idea and points to their records getting even better when they move from a pro-am set up into full studio sessions. “It’s working really well,” says Tom. “Mark brought a freshness to ‘Dictator’ because he really liked it. Another song the producer likes is ‘Volumes’, the b-side of ‘Centurions’, and he’s urging the band to let him re-record it and put it centre stage.

“There’s more of 50s surf kind of guitar sound. It’s not quite as glitchy, but it’s got a glitch element to it.” “I think we’ll do that with him and release it later on,” says Tom. “But we’ve got bags of new stuff as well. Influence wise there was a bit more of 50s twist, like a surf kind of guitar sound. It’s not quite as glitchy, but it’s got a glitch element to it.” “I’ve been listening to a lot of the things I played growing up,” adds Sammy, “the blues things I loved like Howling Wolf and Bo Diddly as well as Buddy Holly. We don’t sound like that but it’s informing the songwriting. In the past we wouldn’t have wanted to put too much of that stuff in but all of a sudden I’m more comfortable with the things that have influenced me personally rather than what’s stylistically right for the band.” Getting a hold of their influences has been a key part in the growth of Pope Joan. The band has always been a bit of a musical soup, but the elements could bang together. “Everyone throws so many influences into the melting pot,” confirms Tom. “It’s really satisfying when they all work but it takes a bit more effort. Some bands start off with an idea of what they are going to do and it’s more of a focused, deliberate process. It’s been a lot more organic for us, which is why it’s taken longer to hit the nail on the head and get something that we’re all happy with.” “We’ve finally learned how to gel our styles, bring in the right influences,” adds David. “We have a collective Live: Prince Albert, Sun 21st mindset now of what we Single: ‘Dictator’ Mon 29th are trying to achieve Web: www.myspace.com/popejoan rather than just stumbling upon it,” Sammy admits.

FYI What must have seemed like a big gamble at the time seems now like a pretty shrewd move. By throwing all they had at ‘Hot Water, Lines & Rickey Machines’ they’ve had to basically start again with a completely new batch of songs and, it turns out, a much stronger set. “We took what was useful from it and left behind what wasn’t working,” David says. “I think on the mini-album it feels like we were battling to all get our oar in,” adds synth/guitar playing Tom Windsor, “whereas now less is more.”

www.brightonsource.co.uk/BANDS

It all bodes well for the album that Pope Joan are working towards for the end of the year. Eight songs down and a couple of singles on the way, they’re starting to sound like a band that could deliver a proper hit album, God bless them.

They have an awesome ability to get everybody dancing and create a funky atmosphere, couple that with cheap drinks and you have a pretty good night. (PW)

If you like your house music classy, funky and fun you’ve probably already got this in the diary. Brighton’s big name remixers – Beyonce loved the mix they did for her – and producers, they always bring the party. And now we’ve got ‘Love On My Mind’ stuck in our heads. (JK)

TEEN CREEPS Jazz Rooms Friday 26th

There was a time, oh dwellers of clubland, that clubs played not JUST dubstep, or fidget, but a more heterogenous selection. And not in a “‘Jump Around’, then Queen, then La Roux” kinda way, but in the way that every other tune you’d have your socks blown off by some forgotten new wave gem, or an underground future classic. Teen Creeps, a new venture from the lads who brought you the Smack That blog, aims to have you up at the booth asking “what the fuck was that?” by shoehorning together The Only Ones with Vitalic and XTC with ODB. (MB)

SNEAKER SOCIAL CLUB Coalition Fri 5th

This new night from Hypercolour’s Jamie Russell is aiming for the wider booking policy of the early part of the decade, when nights like The Boutique would mix things up for a music loving crowd. Trainers are encouraged as they want you to get right into the tunes, and the booking policy reflects that. David ‘Trus’me’ Wolstencroft from Prime Numbers brings soulful beats, while arguably the godfather of UK funky, Roska, supplies a mix of Carl Craig and Todd Edwards-sounding 90s US garage. There’s a bin to donate your own sneakers (and shoes) to TRAID too, which is a nice touch. (JK)

SUNDAY SOCIAL

Concorde 2 Sun 7th Despite their rightly lauded origins as innovators of shivering, bloodless funk noir (their chilling Factory debut ‘All Night Party’ and desiccated take on Banbarra’s ‘Shack Up’ merely the tip of a formidable iceberg), A Certain Ratio’s later diversions into Latin flavoured pop seemingly diluted their personalities to such an extent that they finally evaporated. ACR’s reformation was hardly anticipated, but their set at Beachdown (remember that?) was a festival highlight. Heavily influenced Brighton acolytes Transformer add to a strong, charitable bill tonight that includes Steve Mac (see interview), deep house god Kenny Hawkes and house pioneer Danny Rampling. (SH)

WASTED UV RAVE Honeyclub Fri 12th

After a great night last October, Wasted is back with another UV Rave, now at the Honeyclub. It’s pretty much exactly what it says on the tin – ultraviolet light, UV décor, glowsticks, facepainting and a mash up of electro and indie. It’s only three quid in advance, and there’s cheap drinks all night so you can’t go wrong really. (JK)

Wax On present the original mash-up master (who famously turned his back on the scene at its height for more interesting pastures) as he treks up and down the country before jetsetting off to California for the Coachella Festival. He’s been busy remixing his nips off with the likes of Boys Noize and Yeah Yeah Yeahs so expect to hear some dutty productions of pure electro sexiness. Joining him in the booth will be residents People Get Real bringing their own brand of dance-floor terrorism and Eskimo Twins with their darker electronic sound with twists of pop sensibilities. BOOTY GALAXY RECORDS LAUNCH

Concorde 2 Sat 13th

Smirnoff had a pretty good idea recently – hold a competition to see who could come up with the best concept for a party and then bung them a shitload of money to make it happen. This one won, for good reason. Staring in the 1940s every decade gets an hour to showcase its best bits – burlesque, disco, rave, rock’n’roll. The guys behind it have spunked all Smirnoff’s prize money on the night so expect it to be pretty spectacular, not least as you get six New Year’s Eves in the seven themes. Be warned, the first decade starts at 9pm. (JK)

NOISY! That’s Vitalic’s thing. When ‘La Rock 01’ came out in 2001 it was absolutely mind-blowing and ushered in the whole nasty electro sound that still gets a lot of play these days. New LP ‘Flashmob’ is really good too, sort of more of the same – synthy, gnarly – but really polished. The man has got enough anthems to rock the place, even though it’s an early show. Bring tissues to mop up the blood from your ears. (JK)

STICK IT ON

Hanbury Sat 27th

When Rob came up with the idea for Stick It On he must have been right pleased with himself. A good day’s work, that one. Because the simple fact is that for all the technicalities and obsession with beat matching, DJing is about one thing: playing good tunes, preferably with enthusiasm. Giving regular punters 15 minutes of fame behind the decks means there’s an urgency to the night as the DJs cram in their favouriterecord-evah. Never a dull moment. (JK)

Kill Em All

words bY the james kendall photos by the James kendall and thomas chambers

Kill Em All is a fucking cool night. Not only does it often rock up at Fabric, it also boasts a list of guests over the last seven years that sounds like the end of LCD Soundsystem’s ‘Losing My Edge’. Erol, the Chemicals, Friendly Fires, Boys Noize, our own Maccabees, Crystal Castles, and, aptly, James Murphy have joined the promoters Filthy Dukes. Simian Mobile Disco and Justice were pretty much residents too, before anyone knew too much about them. What we’re trying to say is that this mix of indie and dance music is right on it. If you want to see great DJs and bands upfront – if only for bragging rights – you’ve come to the right place, especially now that the Londoners have Hot Chip ‘One Life Stand (Carl branched out to a monthly Brighton affair. So far we’ve Craig Remix)’ had Micachu DJing, Ou Est Le Swimming Pool and O. Azari & III Children, plus ace resident DJ Riton. The highlight of ‘Reckless (With Your Love)’ March’s jaunt is We The XX Have Band playing ‘VCR (Matthew Dear Remix)’ live. AKA AKA ROAR

words and photos by the james kendall

It’s been four years since we popped down to JuJu to catch Skream – in the bloody Jazz Rooms! – so it’s not surprising to find dubstep fragmenting into sub-genres. Aka Aka Roar stays away from the ruffneck wobble bass stuff in favour of the more tuneful, intelligent end that melts into 2 step and even techno, known variably as funkstep, techstep, future garage, or melodic dub. Many of the scene’s most interesting names have already been down – including Appleblim, Ramadanman and Untold, meaning that the crowd is right on the dancefloor locked into the music rather than falling around the bar. Normally nights are split between good DJ/progressive music policy or cheap drinks/crazy behaviour, but Aka Aka Roar manages to balance a bit of all of it with Darkstar a clued up crowd ready for fun and ‘Aidy’s Girl Is A Computer’ good drink deals. This month Shortstuff & Geoim your two quid gets you sets ‘No Hand Signals’ from Hyetal, Ben UFO, Bok Crystal Fighters Bok, and James Blake. Culture words by Emma Bertrand, Nick Coquet, Ben Miller

COMEDY: CHRIS ADDISON

Komedia Sat 6th

In a crueller parallel universe, Chris Addison never made his name as a geeky spin doctor in The Thick of It, and is still presenting dire late-night clip shows in between playing miniscule comedy clubs. As it is, his satirical breakthrough has seen the middle class bastion of zipwire energy, unstinting self-deprecation and anti Daily Mail diatribes snap up endless successful radio and TV shows. He’s even having to do an earlier show for this one after the initial gig sold out. (BM)

THEATRE: BANE II Upstairs at Three and Ten Sat 6th

Twisting film noir and pulp fiction with smoke and mirrors physicality and characters morphing at breakneck pace, Joe Bone’s original portrayal of Bruce Bane – a hired hand scaling the murky streets in fearless pursuit of an evil implicitly lurking around every corner – was one of the highlights of the Fringe last year. Returning with more mystifyingly summoned sound effects (there’s a brilliant accompanying guitarist in there somewhere), the gravel-voiced avenger’s updated escapades are a cause you can believe in. (BM)

THEATRE: HUIS CLOS Upstairs at Three and Ten Tues 9th – Thurs 11th

Catch a few board-treading local prodigies as Brighton Young Actors have a crack at Jean-Paul Sartre’s existential tale from hell, where a group of hapless souls are left to poke and prod over each other’s worst desires in a collective dark night of the soul. It’s sure to resonate with anyone who’s made the sorry traipse out for a swift soothing Guinness after an all-nighter at the

Volks. Hell is other people, as the most famous quotation from this one suggests. (BM)

THEATRE: THE SEAGULL The Little Theatre Tues 9th – Sat 13th

A full-blooded barnstormer for The Little this month in the form of Anton Chekhov’s late 19th century classic featuring a quartet of thespian Russians sparring with their own fragile egos in a cry for help running on sex, showbiz, hope and despair. Strictly speaking it’s got enough pathos to qualify as a kind of tragicomedy, but the depth of character given to each individual makes it much more affecting than that would suggest. A powerful bit of drama well worth watching. (BM)

PERFORMANCE: THIS IS NOW The Basement Thurs 11th

Experienced dancers Tom Roden and Pete Shenton combine some niftily hilarious dance moves with great big slabs of nostalgia based around the original ‘Now That’s What I Call Music!’ album from 1983, which Roden illegally recorded onto cassette from vinyl. Their choice of genre meshing means they draw plenty of odd comparisons, usually involving Morecambe and Wise and Rambert Dance Company. In truth they’re original, random and liable to make you piss yourself. Especially if you’ve got a soft spot for Heaven 17. (BM)

prices for this one. From the doppelganger-hunting TV show to the gasless road trip around America and the publicity picture of the man himself in a ratty old charity shop cardigan, he’s clearly moved into the realms of safe mainstream appeal – the fact he’ll probably pack out the Royal attests to the ubiquity of his fuzzy, gentle approach, although he’s capable of more acerbic things. (BM)

EXHIBITION: RENEGADE POTTERS AND EXTREME CRAFT Ink_D, from Fri 12th

Still a bit of a mystery at the time of writing, the name of this show begs further investigation, especially in the hands of Ink_d. We know Carrie Reichardt, a potter who fires anarchic messages onto vintage plates, is involved, as are War Boutique, a protest group who subvert military uniforms and bulletproof vests. Also on board is Jimmy South, a glass wizard who carves luminous grenades among other attempts to “make very ugly objects beautiful”. We’ll get our placards and Dr Martens out. (BM)

THEATRE: ONE MAN LORD OF THE RINGS Theatre Royal Weds 24th

Following his successful outing with the One Man Star Wars Trilogy, Charles Ross is back with a singular take on Tolkien, the three films reduced to a one-hour performance. No costumes, no props, just a pair of elbow pads and the wit and imagination to sift through the hours and hours and hours of arse-achingly dull cinema to arrive at its essential narrative crux, all delivered at breakneck speed. Can we request a 10-minute Schindler’s List next? (NC)

COMEDY: RICHARD HERRING: HITLER MOUSTACHE

Komedia Weds 24th

Sporting new facial hair, the star of The Headmaster’s Son and 90s double act Lee and Herring aims to tackle racism head on with comical flare and intelligent wit. Having been acquainted with his bushy upper lip for some time he sets out to test his audience, creating moral dilemmas by asking is the moustache offensive or are we ridiculous to think so? With in-depth research and touching on iconography, Herring delivers a laugh-heavy and topical debate. (EB)

TALK: MARK KERMODE Duke Of York’s Mon 29th

Born Bad pin-up Mark Kermode’s rockabilly haircut could be about to get primetime exposure if his rumoured succession of Jonathan Ross on the Beeb’s Film 2010 materialises, although he’s uncharacteristically cagey about his chances. In the meantime, the unstoppably loquacious Observer and Culture Show cinema critic has got his own book to publicise, which should be worth a read simply for the full account of the infamous interview during which legendary German director Werner Herzog was hit by a bullet. ART YORK PLACE ART STUDIOS

Words By Nick Coquet picture by cubculture

The notion of art as an exclusive club, with musty old portraits hung in drafty galleries, is thankfully long consigned to the past. These days, especially in forwardlooking locales like Brighton, you’re far more likely to encounter art as part of a wider sensory experience, Warhol’s ‘happenings’ finding a 21st Century reality. THE miserable rich

SINGLE: 12 STONE TODDLER This Suit

ALBUM: THE CLIMBERS

SINGLE: ABSENT ELK

EP: CROOKED MOUNTAIN, CROOKED SEA It’s The Falling

(Amazon)

This latest instalment from the Toddlers’ plan to confirm their reservation at pop’s top table appears to make the assumption that they’re already there – starter polished off and eagerly awaiting the main course. This is the sound of a band who’ve already hit whatever big time is possible these days in the world of quirky, riff-tastic guitar pop, and they’re just waiting patiently for the rest of us to catch up. We’ve said it before, but it has to happen for them before too long. (NC)

Emily (Amazon)

A press release which helpfully suggests namechecks like U2, Coldplay and The Kooks as reference points possibly does more harm than good with sniffy music journos, but luckily we eschew such promotional flim flam. The Elk’s single is tight as a drum skin; a catchy portion of indie pop fare which should be cash in the bank for any radio plugger worth their salt, boding extremely well for their debut album ‘Caught In The Headlights’. If you fancy someone called Emily, this would be a good song to put first on that stalker’s mix CD you were planning to give her. (NC)

Page 34

The Good Ship (Willkommen Records)

Another addition to the ever expanding Willkommen Collective, The Climbers are a new studio-based project formed by Nick and Christian of The Leisure Society and aided by a whole host of guest collaborators including Dan Michaelson (Absentee, The Coastguards) and various members of Sons of Noel & Adrian, Shoreline and Laish. The 11 tracks here make up a melodically rich and wonderfully diverse collection, veering from shuffling banjo-led folk and dusty piano duets through to upbeat barroom-style stomps. Another stylish and ambitious release from the ever-unpredictable folks at Willkommen. (IC)

That Counts, Not the Landing (Apres Vous)

Their debut release having pricked the ears of Tom Robinson Introducing late last year, the subversive post-rock quartet offer up five new tracks for our delectation. Comparable to the likes of Fugazi, At The Drive In and in quieter moments Red House Painters, they display an unnervingly raw yet constrained sound in the complexities of their timings. The EP moves through unabated noise to simplistic reflections, ‘It’s The Falling That Counts, Not The Landing’, is an impressive followup EP. (LS)

ALBUM: THE DIAMOND FAMILY ARCHIVE One To Twenty (Electronic Musik)

Taking a slight detour from his usual hauntingly atmospheric folk, The Diamond Family Archive instead opts for a slight change of scenery with an album of instrumentals. Playing all manner of guitars, percussion, electronic effects, banjos and harmoniums, what we have here are an enchanting 10 tracks of lush, brooding soundscapes, all lazy grace and diverse instrumentation, the nearest comparison being the gently blissed out tunes of Brightback Morning Light. This is undoubtedly music made for lonesome country wanderings, and you sure won’t want to return home afterwards. (IC)

ALBUM: FRIGHTENED RABBIT

The Winter Of Mixed Drinks (FatCat)

Now here’s a band to get excited about. Their third album sees them finally realise the potential they’ve always hinted at, with a marked progression in, well, just about every element of the record. An expansive sound with exquisite production polishing anthemic and hypnotic arena indie songs, if there was any justice in the world Frightened Rabbit would be its house band. They’re deservedly picking up plaudits everywhere from Q to the News Of The World, the latter without recourse to any of the band shagging John Terry. (NC)

SINGLE: HADOUKEN

Turn The Lights Out (JFB Remix) (myspace.com/hadouken)

Ordinarily we’d steer clear of non-Brighton nu rave shenanigans, but when there’s a JFB remix propping up the tracklisting then naturally we’re going to be all over it like paparazzi on Posh Spice. The Pendulum rockism of the track is stripped back to reveal beats like a robot kicking his way into a panic room; fuzzy squelches and minimal turntable touches battle with string stabs, while still allowing the frenetic vocal a central role. Job well done by JFB – tightening up the tune without smothering it. (NC)

ALBUM: HERE THERE BE MONSTERS Inherent

(Black Match)

Produced by Gez Walton (Blackstorm, The Ghost Of A Thousand), ‘Inherent’ is as dirty as it gets. HTBM’s debut release has been well worth the wait after several years of successful touring around the UK and Europe. Fan favourites Kanine Vs Feline and Welcome To Barbados join Trojans and Driven to create an excellent start to the year for Brighton metal. (AP)

EP: HIGH RANKIN

Occupation: Pimp And Gambler (Cheap Thrills)

Woe betide you if you happen to be lurking anywhere near the bass bins when this drops. The four tracks across the EP are a heavy, layered precipitation of bass, deep and squelchy in both sound and lyrical suggestion. At times we’re drawn back to the EBM sounds of mid-period Nitzer Ebb or Front 242, but this is no

www.brightonsource.co.uk/REVIEWS

retro ride, this is all about a relentless flurry of beats which rain down thick and fast. (NC)

SINGLE: THE MISERABLE RICH Somerhill (Humble Soil)

The much beloved Brighton curios return with another sublime slice of chamber pop. We love the way TMT take the road less travelled and turn it into an entirely accessible musical thoroughfare. Lots of bands cynically bung in a string section to give ballads more gravitas, but here it lends the quietly charming songs a timeless natural quality and a sincerity that truly deserves a wider consumption. We bet Wes Anderson would love it. (NC)

SINGLE: PEGGY SUE Watchmen (Wichita)

There’s a certain vindication for SOURCE in bringing news of a new Peggy Sue single, together with a new record deal and a general marked progression in their fortunes since they first graced our pages. Now properly in contender territory, with an officially eagerly-awaited new album on the release schedule, the trio open proceedings with this brooding and dramatic single – unmistakably Peggy Sue as we know and love them, just that little bit more so. (NC)

ALBUM: TURNCOAT

An Adventure In Skill And Chance (Turncoat Music)

It’s been something of a rocky road so far for Turncoat; the last few years have seen them go through acrimonious splits, writer’s block, major label signing and subsequent dropping, eventually coming up for air in 2010 with a polished debut album to show for their time of turmoil. Taut indie guitar rhythms back a deadpan, almost Billy Bragg vocal, forming a sound that stands out as rather original in a sea of similarity. (NC)

ALBUM: THOMAS WHITE The Maximalist (Cooking Vinyl)

Having been in one band that people have heard of is an achievement most musicians don’t manage. You can imagine Thomas White sitting his grandkids on his knee waxing lyrical about the Electric Soft Parade glory days as they suck on Werthers Originals. Since then he’s played with, among others, Brakes, British Sea Power, Restlesslist, Sparks and Patrick Wolf and wound up with this, his second solo album. With such a Rolodex of famous names at his disposal it’s maybe surprising that he’s played, recorded and mixed it all himself, but it’s by no means compromised by such control freakery. (NC)

ALBUM: ZERO dB

One Offs, Remixes And B Sides (Tru Thoughts)

We were all about the ‘Bongos, Bleeps And Basslines’ album a few years back, so it’s a long overdue treat to get a 23-track tidyup of Zero dB’s significant and prolific output since then. Like it says on the sleeve, it brings together a slew of the busy boys’ reinterpretations and rarities, much of which has been frustratingly hard to get hold of, as well as new and exclusive material. All tinged with a jazzy loveliness, Latin steam, dirty beats and bass, this is an essential set. (NC)

There’s nothing like dressing for the season – and this is certainly nothing like dressing for the season. Maria caught our eye as we prowled the streets of Brighton in search of style warriors, cheerfully sporting a 12th night-defying Christmas jumper, with an optimistic pair of shorts while the rest of us were shivering about the place in long johns. Her general fashion manifesto is a fondness for vintage items and lots of red – she talked us through her look: Jacket “It’s my 11 year-old sister’s, from H&M Kids, worn for the cropped effect with short sleeves.” Jumper “It’s from Dirty Harry, with a Christmas tree, lots of Disney characters and a gingerbread man. I wear it all year round.” Shorts “From Top Shop. Yes, it is a bit cold for shorts, I know. I’ve got a fur coat back in the car just in case.” Tights “I never wear less than a 40-denier, unless they’re the ones with black seams up the back.” Boots “From Office – yes they’re quite high, they’re 11-hole.” Bag “From Paul’s Boutique. It’s a Chanel copy, I can’t really afford the real thing at the moment.” Wristbands “I went to my first festivals last summer so I’ve kept the wristbands from them. I’ve got a Big Chill and a Reading one on. They drip a bit after a shower but they don’t itch too much.”

HOPE & HARLEQUIN 31 Sydney Street 01273 675222 Words by Nick Coquet

“It’s hard to let some things go but you can’t keep everything. Your job is to find something a new home, with someone who can do something with it.” While fashion has a quick, mass-market turnover, vintage wear is the enduring and individual choice for the discerning dresser. For the last three years, Hope & Harlequin has been a goldmine of unique charm, the place to find an item that simply makes your heart sing. In their weekly stock gathering expeditions, it’s that instant response they look for, as well as fabric, cut, quality, individuality, neatness, beauty, quirkiness and humour.

Page 40

Customising and fitting garments gives the customer something that’s perfect for them, an individual item to mix with modern pieces. Louise from Hope & Harlequin also has a history in bespoke bridal wear, and has brought this expertise to the shop. With a range of vintage nuptial outfitting as well as their own collection of made-toorder vintage pattern dresses, they cater for the bride who wants something different from the run of the mill. With prices ranging from £25 up to about £1,800 including madeto-order, there’s something to suit every purse. While their own philosophy is more about what you buy than where you buy it, Hope & Harlequin is always a safe bet for some classic clothing.

Unsung Heroes 100 People who make brighton what it is No.7: Andy Mac

A DJ and A&R man who doesn’t shout about how important he is? Unheard of, but that’s how low key Andy Mac is, despite having the best job in town. What’s your role at Skint and Loaded? It’s kind of multi-headed, I’m A&R Manager for Skint, have some input on Loaded, and we’ve recently started an artist management arm to the company which I’m getting more and more involved with What’s makes a Skint record and what makes a Loaded record? It’s a good question without a simple answer. Firstly it’s the same small team of people working on both labels. Both labels have and do release club orientated or more commercial tracks. For example Loaded have released underground electronic acts like Super_Collider and top 10 singles by Freemasons, while Skint have released hit commercial singles by X-Press 2 and Fatboy, and heavy club tracks by Alter Ego and Dave Clarke. I guess you could describe it as Skint’s yin to Loaded’s yang. What’s been your proudest Skint/Loaded moment? After 14 years here that’s a tough one, there have been so many but I guess for me there’s what I’d call the Fatboy Phenomenon around the release of the ‘You’ve Come A Long Way Baby’ album. For about two years it was non-stop, number one singles and albums, the Spike Jonze videos, so many awards – a really surreal time. How did you get into music and the music business? I was 17 in 1989 and got swept up in the whole acid house explosion, a life-changing time, mainly at the old Zap Club listening to resident DJs like Chris Coco, Carl Cox, and Damian Harris my future boss, I soon got into DJing myself and spent the next few years doing the Brighton circuit and beyond and then a little bit of music production, and through this met the partners in Skint, JC, Tim and Damian. I was recording sporadically in their studio when the label started to really take off in 1996, they needed a spare set off hands, I started making the tea, and I’m still here. Do you think that you’ll get bored of music? Nope can’t see it, tastes change all the time and I might get bored with one sound or genre, but then something new comes along, blows you away and everything’s very exciting again.

Royal Sovereign 66 Preston Street (01273) 323289 Mon-Fri: noon-3pm, 6pm-10pm. sat-sun: noon onwards

THE PLACE

Of all the pubs we didn’t go to on our big roast-fest last issue, probably the place that got the most props was the Royal Sovereign. Placed as it is on ‘Restaurant Road’ it really needs to be good at grub to stop people wandering over to China China and the like. Bowling up on the off-chance at well past 9pm, we’re impressed to discover food served until ten. The place is packed and cosy with a really nice atmosphere. We’ve got high hopes for our meal.

THE MEAL

Despite the number of eateries among its neighbours, there aren’t many places to enjoy British cuisine meaning the Sov can

stake its territory with an ever-changing menu of classics with a twist. We grab a ‘light bite’ of ribs to go with the meal and it’s immense. A mountain of meat, which falls off the bone when we pick it up, it’s more Indian than Chinese coming with a coriander and satay-like creamy, nutty sauce. The big portions – especially for the money – are echoed in the main dishes. The belly pork is not just chunky but contains no fat – none at all. It comes with soft bubble and squeak, crisp parsnip chips, braised red cabbage and rich apple gravy. Even more impressive is the lentil shepherd’s pie with a tender lamb shank where the shepherd would usually be. Proper Irish peasant food, it comes with deliciously boiled bacon and savoy cabbage, moist and tasty. Let just say we needed a doggy bag.

VERDICT

Clearly SOURCE readers really know their stuff; this place is amazing. It’s not the cheapest pub grub but the prices are reasonable and the food is great. The Royal Sovereign is up there not just with the best places to eat on Preston Street but also with the top of the gastro-pubs in Brighton like the Yeoman and the Forager, albeit at a keener price.

WERE WE SUSSED

We didn’t do anything unusual – we even had a good excuse for carrying a massive camera – but the staff were incredibly, almost suspiciously, attentive. We think that they’re genuine though, which makes the Sov just about the best service in town. Sussed? Probably not.

SPACEMEN 3 WITH SPECTRUM IN TOWN THIS MONTH WE BRING YOU THE SERMON OF SPACEMEN 3 WORDS BY NICK COQUET

The history of ‘alternative’ music is littered with so-called important bands – names kids would drop in the timehonoured tradition of cooler-than-thou; bands that never sold out and never sold much at all. Jason Pierce and Pete Kember’s legendary and truly influential Spacemen 3 were the name on every tripped out scenester’s lips in the late 80s, despite never troubling the mainstream. So with Spectrum making a welcome visit this month (see Gig Previews) we thought it was time to preach the righteous sermon of Spacemen 3 and their Bonsai family tree of Spectrum and Spiritualized.

SPACEMEN 3 ‘REVOLUTION’

“For all the fucked up children of the world… we give to you… Spacemen 3.” Taking the didactic manifesto of the MC5 and reducing it to a single droned chord, moved just two frets along every eighth note and back again in a perfect realisation of minimalism, polemic and sheer sonic assault, this is what finally put the band on the map after a few years in the indie hinterland. While bands like Sonic Youth were already treading a similar musical path around New York, this was certainly a musical kick up the arse for Rugby, Warwickshire.

SPACEMEN 3 ‘HYPNOTISED’

By the time of their fourth and final album ‘Recurring’, all was not well in the Spaceman camp. The two sides of the album were effectively recorded as solo works, with just one track, a Mudhoney cover, featuring both Pierce and Kember together. This sprawling epic, from Jason’s section, is a clear and tantalising precursor to the hypnotic keyboard tremolo of Spiritualized, and an obvious realisation of their manifesto of ‘taking drugs to make music to take drugs to’.

SPACEMEN 3 ‘LORD CAN YOU HEAR ME?’

Oddly, considering their less than Sunday Best advocacies over the years, much of Kember and Pierce’s work both together and apart shares the common thread of gospel music. Perhaps one man’s psychedelic self-medication is another’s unwavering belief in an unlikely deity. But cod psychology aside, this is an unfussy

and irreverence-avoiding piece of hypnotic beauty, a simple arrangement and pleading vocal that would only raise the most uncharitable of eyebrows were it to turn up on Songs Of Praise.

SPIRITUALIZED ‘LADIES AND GENTLEMEN WE ARE FLOATING IN SPACE’

Conspicuously absent from last month’s Valentines compilations, this is nonetheless one of the most beautiful songs ever written – featuring and presumably about band keyboardist Kate Radley, who ended up leaving Pierce for that lanky goon Richard Ashcroft. With its frank and desperate admission ‘all I want in life’s a little bit of love to take the pain away’, repeated over a simple looped chord descent and ground control radio comms, it was the perfect opener and title track to an essential album.

SPIRITUALIZED ‘IF I WERE WITH HER NOW’

The second song on the ‘Lazer Guided Melodies’ record, this was a perfect embodiment of the band’s formative releases. With its backwards-echoey vocals, single chord repetition and single floor tom percussion build into keyboard and sax crescendo, it still reminds us of staring, saucer-eyed, at the unfurling visuals behind the band on various stages. Luckily sitting down on the sticky floor was encouraged at gigs – mosh pits were always a bugger for skinning up in.

SPECTRUM ‘HOW YOU SATISFY ME’

Pete Kember, or Sonic Boom as his mum almost certainly doesn’t call him, was somewhat cast aside when the rest of Spacemen 3 splintered into Spiritualized, but he dusted himself off and got back to the business of making proper druggy music. After an album as Sonic Boom called ‘Spectrum’, he released his first album as Spectrum, ‘Soul Kiss (Glide Divine)’ in 1992. This single from it is markedly different from Pierce’s post-S3 work, being perhaps more song-based than Spiritualized’s ethereal builds, yet the common threads of psychedelic rock repetition and acid-drenched everything remain.
