A Course Rep is a student that volunteers to discuss your viewpoint at a course level and ensure that you’re getting the most of your university experience. The elected Rep will attend meetings with the University, raise any issues on behalf of course mates and help to create positive, lasting change.
“
TURNING STUDENT FEEDBACK INTO EFFECTIVE ACTION
”
Course Reps are essential in representing your student voice at Uni. They help to ensure that courses are relevant and run smoothly.
If you’re interested in becoming a Rep, let your course leader know at the beginning of the year. At the start of each year an informal election is held in class to decide who will be the representative for each course for that year. Once elected you will have full training, get support from BSU, learn key employability skills and attend social events as well as receiving rewards such as bespoke hoodies and vouchers.
TERM-TIME COMMITMENTS
he c
COURSE REPS
Can be as little as 8.5 hours over the year, however course reps can get more involved within their school or course. For example, a course rep might help students raise issues throughout the year, attend extra training sessions, or take part in extra focus groups. If you have any questions about what being a rep involves and want to know more information please don’t hesitate to contact

CAN I GO TO FRESHTIVAL IF I AM NOT A FIRST YEAR? We will be announcing when tickets go on sale to each year group very soon, so keep your eyes peeled on our socials. These tickets will also be linked to our socials, so just follow the information once it has been announced to purchase tickets.

FRESHTIVAL FAQS COVID-19 QUESTIONS
]
WHAT HAPPENS IF WE ARE IN ANOTHER LOCKDOWN? In the event of another lockdown all events will be postponed until the next possible dates, and you will have a choice between rolling your ticket over or receiving a full refund. This will simply be a click of a button away.
I AM SELF-ISOLATING WILL I STILL BE ABLE TO TAKE PART? We will have various online and virtual events for you to get your teeth into, so have no fear. We also have lots of events all the way up until Halloween so you will absolutely be able to attend events after your isolation period ends.
WILL WE HAVE TO HAVE COVID PASSPORTS? We will be following the Government guidelines very closely on this, come September. As will all the clubs and partners. When purchasing your ticket you will notice a tick box in which you will agree to follow the guidelines at the time to be able to enter. Unfortunately, this is not a union decision and is down to any new restrictions that the government implement.
WHAT HAPPENS IF WE CATCH COVID AT AN EVENT? We have decided as a union to protect all Freshtival and other event tickets this year through a provider called Ticket plan. Just make sure you click the box to add it to your ticket. You may have realised that ticket prices are cheaper than previous years this is so that we can absorb that cost for you!
WILL I GET A REFUND IF I HAVE A POSITIVE COVID TEST? Yes. This falls under your insurance with Ticket plan. When you purchase your ticket make sure you read all of the T’s&C’s and tick the box to add the insurance to your ticket. Remember, you are not paying any extra as we have deducted it from our previous prices as we wanted to make sure this was covered for you.

THATS RIGHT! We are covering your ticket insurance this Freshtival! But you need to give us permission to do so should something happen. To do this, when you purchase any tickets as part of Brighton Students’ Union Freshtival, be sure to select the insurance box when you’re prompted. If you don’t tick this or add insurance to your ticket purchase we won’t be able to compensate you later should something change with our current Covid-19 restrictions. REMEMBER: All OFFICIAL Brighton Students’ Union Freshtival events will feature our branding & logo on the marketing material. If you don’t see our logo in any promotion for an event, then we aren’t affiliated and this event isn’t covered by our insurance. If something happens during one of these unaffiliated events, we will be unable to help you get a refund.

TOP TIPS FOR FRESHERS JUMP RIGHT IN: In the first 2 weeks of uni, you’ll have so many opportunities thrown your way! Take every chance you can to meet new people, whether that’s joining a society, attending official BSU events or just enjoying a cuppa with your new friends. PREPARATION IS KEY: Make sure you’re extra prepared in order to minimise stress when you arrive. Check out the University and Students’ Union websites to familiarise yourself. It’s also important to register for a doctor and dentist at the beginning of uni as you may forget to as time goes on. WORK CAN PILE UP: Try not to get too carried away with Freshers’ and attend your induction lectures so you can plan how to manage your workload throughout the year. CHEESE IS EXPENSIVE: Remember your loan has to last for a whole term and adjusting to independent living and/or a student loan can be challenging. You can find great advice about budgeting on our website. It’s also a good idea to make the most of student discounts – you can get fantastic local and national discounts with TOTUM. REMEMBER THAT EVERYBODY IS IN THE SAME BOAT: We understand that meeting so many new people can seem daunting, it’s often helpful to remember that everybody is in the same position – and they’re looking to meet people with similar interests and make the most out of their experience too!

SLEEP Put away your phone and laptop at least half an hour before bed. Use your bed as your sanctuary. Creating a calming space that is associated with relaxation and sleep will make it easier for your brain to switch off. Try and get into a regular sleep schedule. This will help your ability to enter REM sleep - the stage of sleep believed to benefit learning, memory, and mood.
CHILL It’s important to ‘chill.’ University can be a busy time, juggling lectures, essays and a social life, which is why it is important to take time for yourself. ‘You time’ can help reduce stress and build self-esteem over time, so go on, take some time out. You deserve it.
DIET The food you eat can have an impact on how your mind and body works. Keep healthy snacks on hand to boost your concentration throughout the day. Aim to drink 6 to 8 glasses of fluid a day. Water, lower fat milk and sugar-free drinks, including tea and coffee all count. A varied, balanced diet includes carbs, vegs and protein! Check out NHS Eat Well website to find more on what to include in your diet, eating on a budget and healthy recipes. NHS.uk/live-well/eat-well/ 5-a-day-what-counts
EXERCISE Exercise is good for the whole body including the mind. If you are struggling to find ways to exercise check out the sports section!
STAYING HEALTHY AT UNIVERSITY
WELFARE WELFARE We understand that while University is an amazing experience, sometimes we can all benefit from a bit of extra help. We are here for you, and provide a variety of activities, services and run awareness raising campaigns throughout the year.
Led by students and officers, we support and host regular welfare activities and campaigns on educational and social issues. These might include supporting anything from Black History Month to virtual yoga classes. Anyone can get involved. Keep an eye out for activities on your campus.
We have wellbeing cupboards on every campus. These cupboards are filled with essentials to help you keep your health and wellbeing in check. All these products are free for our students, so if you’re stuck and need something while you’re at Uni - you can head to our offices on every campus, no questions asked.
WELF ARE CHECKS CHECKS WELF ARE We are committed to supporting your wellbeing while you are at university and will be contacting each and every one of you to make sure you are ok. One of our team will reach out to you through the year by sending you a message through Microsoft Teams (which is one of the digital tools the University uses). From there you can either use the text chat to talk with one of our teams or arrange a video call. We can talk to you about any issues you might have and if we don’t know the answer, we know someone that will! If you don’t need us that’s absolutely fine too!
LOCAL & UNI SERVICES: Sometimes things can get really challenging so we work with the University and multiple local services and companies who provide expert support and advice on different health and wellbeing topics:

WHAT IS BSU DOING? We understand it’s not enough to say ‘I’m not racist’; and to further our goal of making Brighton Students’ Union more inclusive, we have developed our Anti-Racist Forum. This group works hard to do more to tackle race inequality by actively challenging others and fighting back against racism. As part of our ongoing campaign to fight racism, we have included a list of resources and material to ensure that you have the tools to help join our ongoing work. For further details or information on how Brighton Students’ Union is tackling racism alongside the University, e-mail us at: BSUCommunications@brighton.ac.uk
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
1) BEING AN ALLY
Firstly, get comfortable with feeling uncomfortable. You may feel it’s difficult to speak up when you haven’t lived the experiences of others. One key message to take away is to become an ally: ‘I understand that I will never understand, but I stand with you’.
2) EDUCATE YOURSELF ON THE ISSUES
There are so many books, online journals and articles that can help you educate yourself. Such resources are key in raising awareness about black history, how racism and microaggressions seem to be normalised within society, and how even to this day, racism is still rife around the world. • White Fragility, Robin Diangelo • Why I’m No Longer Talking To White People About Race, Reni Eddo-Lodge • Natives, Akala
3) SUPPORTING THE MOVEMENT
If you don’t have any money to spare, you can still get involved in donating your time. A video has been created on YouTube for people to watch and 100% of the ad revenue the video makes will be donated to the charities stated at the start of the video. There is also a list and links to the petitions that you can sign in the description.

LGBTQ+ History Month at Brighton Students’ Union aims to not only celebrate the huge achievements and contributions made by LGBTQ+ people throughout history but also increase the visibility of the barriers and discrimination faced by the community and what we can do to eliminate these. In the last year the Union have campaigned to raise awareness of hate crime, promoted LGBTQ+ sexual health, celebrated Brighton Pride, supported LGBTQ+ history month and marked International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.
CHECKOUT THE LGBTQ+ SOCIETY! Don't forget, if you need additional support from fellow students whilst studying, that our AMAZING LGBTQ+ Society is here to give you extra information, or just some cool people to hang out with! The LGBTQ+ Society is for all students who identify within the LGBTQ+ Spectrum (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and all sexualities, genders, and identities that fall under the plus), whether you are openly out, questioning, or unsure. Send them an email if you would like some more information: brightonLGBTQSOC@outlook.com or checkout our Activities section on our website!
