HOT OFF THE PRESS – THE QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FROM THE BRIGHTSEA PRINT GROUP
Introducing Brightsea Print Group! As part of our ongoing development and expansion plans, we have now fully amalgamated three long-standing printing companies. Brightsea Press Ltd, Sprint Print & Design Co. Ltd and Bartlett Digital Printing Ltd formally became Brightsea Print Group in April 2015. This new identity will strengthen our marketing enterprise and give our customers and suppliers one focal point for communication. This is great news for everyone involved and something we have been striving towards over the last three years. All directors and personnel remain the same; you will still have the same point of contact and we continue to operate from Fair Oak Close.
f

STAFF Q&A
PRINT NEWS
How long have you been working at Brightsea? 5 wonderful years!
Major UK paper supplier goes into administration
What does your job role entail? I wear a few different hats. My main role at Brightsea is Customer Account Manager. I look after our lovely customers, make sure everything is running smoothly throughout the production of their job and am here to answer any questions they may have. I dabble in admin and accounts and I am also (the best) tea/coffee maker!
Hundreds of Paperlinx UK staff have been laid off after administrators from Deloitte moved in and closed down most of the UK operation. Paperlinx was the country’s biggest merchanting group. This has had a significant effect on the printing industry nationwide.
What is the best part of your job? Being able to spend a lot of my day communicating and building relationships with our customers. (and working with such a great team, of course!)
Matt Smith and Neville Kahn of Deloitte have been appointed joint administrators of a number of Paperlinx UK businesses, including Robert Horne Group, Howard Smith Paper Group, The Paper Company, and Paperlinx Services (Europe). Paperlinx UK employed around 1,200 staff and up to 693 are being made redundant.
NATASHA WHITE Customer Account Manager
Do you have any hobbies or pastimes? My main hobbies would be watching a good film, shopping, going for dinner, baking (pretty much anything involving food!) What three things couldn’t you live without? My family & friends, my cat and my phone. If you could visit any place in the world, where would you go? Top on my list of places to go has got to be Venice. What’s your favourite food? This is tricky! It would have to be out of Mexican or a Chinese takeaway. But the list is endless! If you could only watch one film again in your life what would it be and why? Hmm, I’m going to go with ‘Man on Fire’. I’m a big Denzel Washington fan and this would have to be my favourite film of his. Which celebrity would you most like to meet? Probably my female crush – Angelina Jolie. I like to think I have a little bit of Tomb Raider in me! What is your greatest fear or phobia? Needles! Eurgh. What is your favourite smell? Either my perfume (Alien – Thierry Mugler) or freshly cut grass! Life is… ? What you make it :-)
As a result of the collapse of Paperlinx one of the largest paper mills, Tullis Russell, has also gone into administration. The Tullis Russell brands include Advocate, Trucard, Naturalis and Mellotex. Administrators report that various Paperlinx UK businesses have revealed that the merchant owed Tullis Russell more than £1.2m. The historic Fife paper maker was put into administration at the end of April, with 346 of its 474 staff subsequently laid off after no buyer emerged for the mill. The employee-owned firm lost
£3.4m on sales of £124.6m in its most recent financial year. Chris Parr, chief executive of Tullis Russell Group – a £158.6m-turnover company before the administration, said trading conditions had been tough for Tullis Russell Papermakers but that the company’s position finally became untenable when Paperlinx went into administration on April 1, Tullis Russell's directors were faced with no choice but to follow suit. KPMG, the administrator of Tullis Russell Papermakers, is in the process of auctioning off the firm’s brands and stock through a sealed bids process. This is very sad news for everyone involved and it has been difficult for companies like Brightsea, who rely on paper and paper merchants as a vital part of their business. Thankfully, we have been swift in our response and have been able to secure some major contracts to ensure that our paper supply chain is robust, reliable and that there is no disruption in service. Some specialist papers and boards have sadly gone for good, but we have worked with our suppliers to find the same, if not better, quality papers which will keep your print looking as good as it always has.
Teneriffe had us pegged! National Trust Teneriffe Farm Campsite had a brilliant idea for tent pegs to use as a gift for happy campers. Of course, we jumped at the chance to get involved. From wood supplied to us, we designed the artwork to be laser printed onto the wood, producing a lovely, unique gift. Talk to us about any bespoke project; we are only too happy to visit you!
NOT JUST PRINT
NEWS IN BRIEF...
New processor arrives smoothly We have recently invested a great deal in a new and improved processor. What’s a processor? we hear you ask. A processor develops the image on an aluminium plate that goes onto our litho presses. Our new processor is cleaner, more reliable and produces plates at a high rate. This enables us to get work to the press much more quickly!
Branching out into wooden products One of the latest services we offer, is full colour print onto wood, birch, cherry, oak, pine, walnut, mahogany, or wood that you have already sourced. This opens up a whole new world of unique opportunities. Why not print your menu covers onto wood? How about wooden business cards or bespoke wooden key fobs?
A great sign of things to come? You may or may not know that Brightsea are now able to design and produce banners and signs of all shapes and sizes. Anything from door signs and 'For Sale' boards, right up to 6 metre hanging banners for big events. No job is too big or too small. We have our own in-house team who can design anything you need and our pricing is very competitive. Signs are just a small part of what we are now able to offer as Brightsea Print Group with Brightsea Promotions being another string to our bow.
Man with a van Not only have we invested in a new Mercedes Sprinter van, we have also invested in a new delivery driver. Keiran is a welcome addition to the Brightsea team and drives the new van which can carry larger loads and make multiple drops to our clients, without having to make a return trip back to base.
WHAT INSPIRES US?
Is your branding reaching the right audience? In this section we take a look at the work of other design agencies that we think do fantastic work. This issue we feature the latest ITV branding, which was created by Rudd Studio. “Alongside the informative BBC and the provocative Channel 4, ITV is friendly and warm.” Matt Rudd of Rudd Studio, the creative team responsible for ITV’s most recent re-brand, describes where he sees the popular channel in relation to it's competitors. PREVIOUS LOGO
The television network required a new logo and brand identity to encompass the warmth people feel for the channels’ content, moving away from the sharp, angular design pictured above. CREATIVE BLOCK
To convey a more endearing image, the team began with handdrawn sketches which were later developed into digital drawings. They gave the logotype sections of colour, which would be handpicked from the background imagery on each individual application. The logo becomes a part of it’s environment and appears softer as a result. Sending out the correct message for your company is just one of many great reasons for a re-brand. It may have become outdated; it's target audience may have shifted with growth, meaning the branding needs reassessing; perhaps it could do with differentiating from it's competitors, to make it stand out from the crowd. Whatever your reason, come and discuss how Brightsea Creative can help to take your business forward with anything from a subtle re-brand to a whole new identity. Call Johno on 01392 360616 to arrange a chat.
Who are Brightsea Creative? We are a fully loaded design studio that offers a professional service with a hint of crazy genius. Our team love to get our claws into logo design, maps, illustrations, posters, brochures and bespoke pieces to get you noticed. We love looking at branding for new businesses too. From signs, banners and displays to stationery, leaflets and stickers, you want it, we design it. You and Brightsea Creative. What a team! The complete package from start to finish.
Steve Davis.
GOOD NEWS!
Steve Davis returns to work after serious illness As some of you may be aware, this year we very nearly lost one of our own. As Steve Davis was moving from Kingsbridge to Tiverton on 28th March 2015, he collapsed whilst carrying his belongings from the car to his home. Luckily two passers-by saw him fall and, with a local resident who was an ambulance driver, they performed CPR and kept his heart going for a quarter of an hour until the ambulance crew arrived. It is scary to think what may have happened without their quick intervention or if Steve had been inside his new home when this happened. After four weeks in Intensive Care at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital and two months at The Mardon Centre for recuperation, Steve was given the all clear to return home.
Recently he met the two passers-by that saved his life. He was able to thank them personally and was given the opportunity to fill in some blanks on what happened that day in March. Steve is now back at work, recovering well and thanking his lucky stars. He is taking things at a steady pace and easing back in to his role well. Steve says: "Watch your stress levels and share your problems with others, eat sensibly and exercise regularly. I was extremely lucky to have survived". This goes to illustrate just how important first aid is when the unthinkable happens. Ironically, Steve is one of our First Aiders here at Brightsea! Everyone here is really proud of how far he has come and loves having him back.
Waving the flag for our beautiful Coast We have an excellent relationship with The National Trust and were delighted to be able to help them celebrate the Coast Festival, 50 years in the conservation of the coast, by producing their feather flags in spring. Brightsea produced over 50 flags which were displayed at various coastal locations across the south west and featured prominently at 'The Big Beach Clean' in March and the 'Big Beach Picnic' in July. If you need flags for your next big event then give us a wave!
Bowmers Café, Bar & Restaurant In late 2014, Bowmers approached us as a brand new business in Budleigh Salterton. Claire and Jan were opening a new café/restaurant with a vision of offering a high quality dining experience. More than just a café, they would offer a live music venue, a meeting place and exceptional food. At the time, they didn’t have a name and the project was going to be starting from scratch, to brand the whole business. After some consultation, the name ‘Bowmers’ was decided upon and we set about designing the logo, along with guidelines to create a strong and consistent brand. Incorporating the colours that Bowmers had chosen for their interior design and clean, slick typefaces, we created a strong, stand out brand that encapsulated everything Bowmers wanted to offer. The logo and branding guidelines were then used to develop printed stationery including letterheads, business cards, loyalty cards and vouchers. We also designed, printed and helped with the installation of the signage, ready for the grand opening. Our involvement didn’t stop there. Bowmers was an instant success but, in this digital age, no business can be without an online presence. Our creative department are proud to offer website design as one of their many skills. Bowmers were quick to take us up on this, with a website designed to work on desktop and mobile devices that would fit in with their brand guidelines. They wanted it to be easy to use, allowing their customers to check the latest opening times, see sample menus, sign up to a mailing list that would give regular updates and get in contact. We are not only working with Bowmers on their website, but have also developed their newsletter template which we will be creating and sending out to customers on their behalf.

As part of the website, Bowmers wanted to incorporate photos of the restaurant and their food. However, as a relatively new business, they didn’t have any existing images. Brightsea work with many businesses who require photography and we are able to suggest different photographers to suit your location and the type of images required. For Bowmers, we suggested Matt Austin, who not only works with some of our other clients but has even been down to Brightsea to photograph some of our work. Bowmers were very pleased with the service they received and the images they received were beautiful. As with any business, Bowmers continues to develop and grow. More recently we have been working with them on a new seasonal campaign.
We are creating seasonal illustrations which are being printed as large posters, used for advertising campaigns and incorporated into both the website and the menus.
“I’ve worked with a lot of design agencies and I think you really are the best and most professional.” Jan Ellis - Bowmers
Jan and Claire came to us having had some teething issues with their menus, which they print themselves. They were struggling with paper menus becoming damaged easily and only being suitable
for single use. We worked with them to come up with a solution, which was to source menu covers into which they would insert the menus. Bowmers were keen to ensure these would still be slick and stylish, to fit in with their brand, but would stand the test of time in a busy restaurant. The beautiful metal and wood foil embossed menu covers we worked with them to create are perfect for the job. We are looking forward to seeing what the future holds for Bowmers and continuing to work with them to help them realise their visions. Beavers are back! Devon Wildlife Trust is delighted to announce the birth of kits born to the first wild colony of beavers in England. New film footage proves that England’s only wild beaver population is growing. The footage, taken by local film-maker Tom Buckley, shows baby beavers – known as kits – taking their first swimming lessons and being helped through the water by their mother at an undisclosed location on East Devon’s River Otter. The births signal the latest chapter in a story which has attracted great support from the local community. Devon Wildlife Trust’s Steve Hussey said: “To see wild beavers swimming in an English river for the first time in hundreds of years is both amazing and exciting; my top wildlife experience in 12 years at the charity!" Brightsea are very proud of the Devon Wildlife Trust and all the great work they do for nature. To find out more visit www.devonwildlifetrust.org

Here at Brightsea, we identified the lack of young blood coming into the industry and three years ago we sought to correct that situation. We found our own youngsters and filled the skills shortage with training from the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) and our own highly skilled and experienced members of staff. Firstly, we trialed the 2 year NVQ level 3 Print Finishing certification with Matthew. During the two year course he showed “enthusiasm and competence said his BPIF training and technical tutor. Matthew passed his exam with flying colours last year and has continued his development by moving into the press room. He currently runs our five colour Heidelberg press and continues to show enthusiasm and commitment. Due to the success of the training and the added value to our business, we recruited three more trainees; Lewis, Jessica and Zelah. Lewis is following in Matthew's footsteps by working his way through Print Finishing NVQ Level 3. Lewis has been with us for a year now and his enthusiasm is infectious. He approaches every hurdle with a smile and is learning all the time, becoming a vital member of our team. Zelah joined us in 2013 as our first design apprentice. She has since
completed her NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Design and has also passed with flying colours. She has excelled during her time here and has learned to build excellent client relationships and communication skills, as well as furthering her knowledge of design software, including learning web design. Zelah has worked on several fantastic projects including working on small scale jobs, branding and logo design, large format banners and signs. In September she will be attending a graduation ceremony at Plymouth College of Art to celebrate her achievements. Jessica is undertaking the Print Administration NVQ level 3 course involving health and safety, marketing and accounts roles. Jessica has brought some much needed youthfulness into the office and reduced the average age by many years! She is very bubbly, professional and fully committed to learning and developing in her new role. Both Lewis and Jessica have another year to go but with the help of those around them, the BPIF and their own drive and determination, they will become huge assets to the Brightsea Print Group. A very big well done to you all!
