BGS Impact Report It takes a community

Celebrating our community and 150 years of giving Some say it takes a village… we say it takes a community. We are a community founded on giving and the shared value of education. It is because of our community – past, present and future – that we are able to nurture current and future generations of boys. Together we have made an impact. To our community of donors and volunteers, young and old, we say...

Thank you.

Your gift of time, treasure and talent has the power to: • Enhance the quality of the student experience. • Provide opportunities for students in financial need and also transform teaching, learning and playing spaces. • Equip students to face the challenges of a complex and changing world.

Message from the Chairman Howard Stack In celebrating 150 years as an institution, we look with gratitude to the men and women who have established and contributed to our remarkable school community. It is a diverse community with students at its heart and includes Old Boys, current and past parents, staff and friends of the School. It is also a global community that extends far beyond the school gates. As we celebrate your support, we take this opportunity to consider the School’s potential and future direction into the next 150 years. Continuing the vision of the School’s founders, it is our mission to educate all-rounded and motivated students who reflect the diversity in our society. Our School and the Board of Trustees have embarked on Campaign 2020, and have set an ambitious goal to grow our Bursary Fund to $20M by 2020. The nature of our Bursary Fund will enable BGS to increase fee-assisted access for students, now and into the future. The generosity of our community has already raised the current level of our Bursary Fund to over $9M. There is still much more to achieve. Each year, gifts like yours make a difference. We hope you will continue to partner with the School as we work towards achieving our objectives.

Message from the Headmaster Anthony Micallef As we celebrate our sesquicentenary, I am proud to be part of the Brisbane Grammar School story. Throughout our history, BGS has pioneered excellence in education, nurturing a diverse population of students to become thoughtful and confident young men who contribute to their communities. Our Old Boys have risen to the top of their chosen fields, have served their country in times of war and have become global citizens who will lead into the future. Brisbane Grammar School is supported in no small part by our generous donors and committed volunteers. In 2017 over 300 volunteers dedicated their time to various initiatives, working together to enhance the quality of the student experience for all students at BGS. Continuing a long history of philanthropy, in 2017 donors contributed $1.4M to bursaries to enable boys in financial need to attend the School. Our community aspires to provide opportunities for students, irrespective of socio-economic background, and aims to sustain the School’s policy of diversity. This diversity opens our boys’ eyes to different perspectives, equipping them for a global future. They leave the School enriched by their experience, as men of character. Our generous donors also contributed $2.1M towards ongoing infrastructure projects, including the refurbishment of Harlin House, upgrades to our War Memorial Library and gardens, and the development of a transformative STEAM precinct to integrate the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. Thank you for making it all possible. Your time and gifts, large and small, play a critical role in educating boys – now and into the future – at Brisbane Grammar School.

“We are proud that our class has established a 2017 Year Group Bursary that will provide opportunities for boys in financial need to be educated at BGS. Jack Stevens and Blake Micallef 2017 Year Group Bursary coordinators

Your collective IMPACT Campaign 2020 Just as our BGS volunteers know many hands make light work, many donations – no matter how small – can grow to make a significant difference. In 2017, 55 boys attending the School benefited from the generosity of the bursary program. The P&F Auxiliary made the largest donation to support this program, pledging $500,000 towards a 50% bursary in perpetuity for a student in financial need. Following their lead, our community raised a further $996,377 towards bursaries through donations and corporate sponsorship initiatives such as our Golf Day and Audi raffle. Young Old Boys from 2016 and 2017 have already started their own Year Group Bursaries, which they hope will flourish over their lifetimes. Year Group Bursaries across all Old Boy years raised $467,402 in 2017, proving that the collective can have a big impact.

Life-changing Opportunities

“The bursary has changed my life, it has changed my family’s life. Coming to BGS gives me the greatest head start in life.” Zeke Leaupepe Perkins ‘18.

Thanks to our generous community, needs-based bursary recipients, Stephen with brothers Micah and Zeke, benefit from a BGS education. The boys are grateful for the investment that individuals, community members and corporate sponsors have made in their future, in particular Simon Fenwick, Peter and Lesley Huxley AM, Nick Heath, Betty Heath and those who supported various initiatives through our Golf Day and Audi raffle.

Transforming Spaces

Harlin House BGS boarding is set to enter a new era, thanks to the generosity of Old Boy Matthew McLennan ‘86, who has donated US$500,000 to launch the Harlin House campaign which will support the refurbishment of boarding facilities. With work completed on the first stage of the refurbishment, boarding students are enjoying new common rooms, and a fantastic barbeque area that provides students with an outdoor space to gather together, like any other family. Matt McLennan says he hopes his donation will inspire others to contribute to boarding at BGS.

“Boarding at BGS was formative for me. Giving back to BGS enables me to both express my gratitude and contribute to the life experience of future boarders.” Matthew McLennan ‘86 BGS Old Boy

War Memorial Library A generous $250,000 donation from the BGS Parents and Friends’ Auxiliary to rejuvenate the War Memorial precinct has transformed the heart of the School, with new gardens and improved social spaces around the tuckshop. The Old Boys Association (BGSOBA) has also contributed $10,000 and is driving fundraising efforts that will go towards the War Memorial Library building restoration. A memorial path from Gregory Terrace that pays tribute to the School’s military history has also been laid. Inside the War Memorial Library building itself there are plans to host exhibits to educate today’s students about previous conflicts in which Old Boys served. It is fitting that these enhancements will be completed for Remembrance Day 2018, when we will commemorate 100 years since the end of the First World War. The War Memorial Library continues to honour the 1022 Old Boys and teachers who served in WWI, and provides accessible, living history to the boys attending BGS today.

Restoring BGS History

Enhancing Student Experience

“For 12 absolutely joyous years, our family life was embedded within the heart of BGS. As parents, we were grateful the School invited us beyond the gates to contribute to the marvelous interaction between school and home.” Anne Hewitt. Mother to Ben ‘09, Sam ‘10, Jack ‘13 and Lachie ‘16.

Whether preparing meals in the tuckshop, fitting boys for new uniforms, coaching sport, debating or chess teams, organising parent functions or a host of other activities – BGS volunteers make an invaluable contribution to the life of the School.
