MAGICAL EXPERIENCES IN BRISBANE The whimsical world of magic has been delighting children of all ages for generations, and South East Queensland is filled with different fantastical experiences sure to delight kids of all ages. Funderwood Hollow at Underwood is a small but scary playground offering the perfect setting to some magical imaginative play. Dress the kids up and host an early magical Christmas party and let the kids enjoy the rope bridges, climbing nets and towers. If you’re looking for story books about magical creatures, Where the Wild Things Are bookshop at West End is a good place to start. For for kids that are more interested in wizards and witches than fairies and elves, a visit to The Store of Requirement in Samford is a must where your children will delight in being sorted into their Hogwarts House while enjoying a refreshing Butterbeer Heading south, the coastal town of Brunswick Heads (in northern NSW) has an enchanting fairy trail to follow with lots of hidden surprises. Call into the visitor centre to pick up a free map before you set out on your magical adventure. To find out more about these adventures head to the Brisbane Kids Website www.brisbanekids.com.au

MAGICAL EXPERIENCES IN BRISBANE CONTINUED Hidden World at Fitzgibben has a secret entrance to the underworld with coded stories written in Sentient Mouse language hidden in various places across the playground.

Tip!

Look for manholes! Continue north to Sunshine Castle (located at Bli Bli on the Sunshine Coast), and you’ll find fairies on display as part of the castle’s doll collection. Spend the day exploring the castle and be transported back to a time of medieval life. The Gollum tree at Scarborough beach is worth a look, especially for fans of The Hobbit. The cotton tree forest, located within the Scarborough beach park, also lends a touch of whimsy to the location. Kids can climb the gnarled cottonwood trees which feel like they could be the home of mythical creatures. Another playground with a nod to the magical world is The Enchanted Forest playground, located at Dorrington Park at Ashgrove. Climb on the spiders’ webs, make music on the magical toadstools, and picnic in the leafy parklands. Further north you’ll find a delightful fairy village at Kumbartcho Sanctuary at Eatons Hill. Take along some fairy bread to enjoy in the beautiful surrounds, and spend some time in the playground and nursery. You can even purchase some plants to take home and create your own fairy garden.

SUMMER CAMPING: BEACH CAMPS

Beach camping is hot property in South East Queensland, so we thought we would list some of the best places in case you are still hoping to book a getaway over the summer. Make sure you check out the car requirements, for example, does it require a 4WD? Are permits required and are there onsite amenities (toilets and showers)? If these are important to you then you might need to book sooner rather than later (some you will have to book for next year!) STRADBROKE ISLAND There are lots of places to camp at Straddie including Adams Beach, Adder Rock, Amity Point, Bradbury’s Beach, Cylinder Beach, Flinders Beach and Home Beach. Flinders and Main Beach are also dog friendly. BRIBIE ISLAND There are 5 different camping spots on Bribie Island, some with facilities and some without. MORETON ISLAND There are 10 different camping zones on Moreton Island and you can do as little or as much as you like, with loads of recreational activities including snorkeling, sand tobogganing and dolphin feeding. INSKIP RAINBOW BEACH 495 ha of recreation land await with individual camp sites on a first in best dressed basis. Gorgeous beaches and coastline to explore!

FREE WATER PLAY & SPLASHPADS If you are after the best of both worlds this summer then why not visit one of the many fantastic parks in Brisbane that have been built with our warmer months in mind? Complete with water play areas included, the following parks allow you to relax with a BBQ or picnic while your children enjoy impressive outdoor playgrounds as well as cooling water play areas all in the one spot.

AQUATIVITY WATER PLAY PARK, SOUTH BRISBANE Located in the heart of the city, Aquativity at South Bank is one of the most popular water play spaces in Brisbane. With the famous man-made beach and playground built alongside the Brisbane River, the play area also includes pools and water spaces of varying depth, fountains and jets.

WHALE PARK, WYNNUM This popular seaside park has got the water and playground imaginative play boxes well and truly ticked. With a huge sanded playground laid out alongside a soft water play area (with whales to climb that sporadically spout water) there is also a pool nearby that fills with sea water and has a small, twisting slide for those looking to completely cool off.

RIVER HEART PARKLANDS, IPSWICH Along the banks of the Bremer River at Ipswich, River Heart Parklands is overflowing with fun and water excitement for little ones. The multilevel zero-depth water play area with spouts and interactive water pumps is equally matched in entertainment value by the impressive playground it borders, which includes a giant steel slide, climbing frame and flying fox, among other things. ROCKS RIVERSIDE PARK, JINDALEE This is Brisbane’s largest riverside park and, on top of the adventure playground, flying fox, amphitheatre and expansive picnic grounds, it is also a toddler’s paddling paradise. The shaded water play area is a generous combination of small streams, shallow pools and fountains that are perfect for entertaining and cooling little people off.

ROBELLE DOMAIN & ORION LAGOON, SPRINGFIELD This 24ha park is an absolute masterpiece in green space and water play design. The zero-depth family water play area is perfect for all ages and includes a tipping bucket, water jets and spouts while the 50m lagoon pool offers beach access and shallow play at one end and 1.5 metre depth at the other. Oh, and if you are after more fun there is always the large interactive playground at Robelle Domain and even some treetop walks to explore.

16 | www.brisbanekids.com.au

DARLINGTON PARKLANDS, YARRABILBA Dubbed the ‘super park’ of Logan, Darlington Parklands easily lives up to this reputation and then some. The huge water play area features both zero-depth fun zones with fountains, spouts and jets as well as shallow pools and streams for kids to play in. The playground boasts a twin 30m flying fox, sandpit, climbing dome, multi-swing and music wall, with the half basketball court and outdoor gym also available to keep the older kids busy.

FREE WATER PLAY & SPLASHPADS CONTINUED REDCLIFFE LAGOON, REDCLIFFE Overlooking Moreton Bay on Redcliffe’s foreshore, the Redcliffe Lagoon is the perfect water play playground with an amazing view as well. While the wading pools, lagoon, water jets, toadstools and water-squirting bugs will provide ample opportunities to cool down, the delightful, sanded children’s playground will equally draw any child’s attention.

BROADWATER PARKLANDS, SOUTHPORT A little further down the coast you will come to another stunning beachside water play park. Stretching over 3km, Broadwater Parklands has plenty to offer but it is the Rockpools water play area and neighbouring playground that draws the most attention to the area. The Rockpools is a large water splash park with shallow rapids, zero-depth water fun with jets and spouts, shallow pools and a large dumping water tap. The playground features slides, rope bridge, climbing frame, rock climbing wall and cradle swings.

Will your child be equipped for tomorrow?

INDOOR ROCK CLIMBING Indoor rock climbing centres are located at numerous spots around Brisbane and offer families the perfect conditions for eager young adrenalin seekers. Not affected by the weather, these centres have all the necessary climbing equipment needed and have different walls and courses set up to cater for a wide range of ages and abilities. Below is a list of some of the best indoor rock climbing walls for kids in Brisbane.

CRANK INDOOR ROCK CLIMBING, MACGREGOR Not only indoor rock climbing but parkour and ninja warrior courses too! SKY CLIMB @ SKYZONE, MACGREGOR Sky Climb is for kids aged 5 (and at least 110cm tall) and older and has over 12 different fun and crazy climbing adventures to conquer. Not only walls though, there are also giant steps, stacked blocks and lit up obstacles to clamber to the top of. URBAN CLIMB, WEST END | NEWSTEAD | MILTON Although families and kids are welcome any time, Urban Climb also have a specific youth program which are classes set up for children based on age (starting from 5 years) where they can learn the skills from the pros!

20 | www.brisbanekids.com.au

ROCKSPORTS, FORTITUDE VALLEY For rock climbing enthusiasts, Rocksports offer youth programs and classes for children as young as 4 as well as scheduled times for younger climbers. Oh, and there is a bouldering cave too! THE ROCK INDOOR CLIMBING GYM, PARKINSON As members of the Chillout holiday program (for kids up to 17 years), you can book an easy two hour session here for only $5 during these periods. You will need to book in advance though! BAY PLAY, CLEVELAND This smaller indoor rock climbing wall is inside a play centre and perfect for the youngest of climbers. No harness is needed as the wall is not overly high and kids fall or jump back into a huge pit of foam (which is actually just as fun as the climbing itself!).

URBAN XTREME OPENS TO THE PUBLIC

Thinking about taking the kids skiing these school holidays? Thanks to the opening of Urban Xtreme, Australia’s largest indoor snow sport and adventure centre, you need not travel further than Hendra, Queensland. CEO Lindsay Davis said the Urban Xtreme team is excited to bring skiing to Brisbane families, without the cost of long-distance travel. “Many young kids dream about going skiing but, unfortunately, the costs involved in reaching Australia’s southern ski fields – or heading overseas – mean several families cannot make this dream a reality,” Ms Davis said. “Urban Xtreme is the perfect place for the whole family to enjoy learning to ski, in a safe and comfortable indoor environment. “Skiing is the perfect school holiday activity – it creates memories, builds fitness and gets the kids away from the TV and off their iPads.

28 | www.brisbanekids.com.au

“Plus, if your family is planning an overseas ski trip, you can visit Urban Xtreme to build ski fitness – that way you can hit the slopes as soon as you arrive.” Individual, one-hour lessons with a qualified instructor will cost $45 for children aged 4-16 years and $55 for adults, or a private session for up to four people will set you back as little as $195. THE CENTRE IS OPEN FROM: 4pm – 9pm Tuesdays to Fridays, 9am – 9pm Saturdays 9am – 7pm Sundays. In the new year, Urban Xtreme will be offering more than just an amazing indoor ski experience. Its Ninja Course and Laser Tag will open in January, with its Trampoline Park, Fun Climb walls, and café scheduled to open in March. URBAN EXTREME IS LOCATED AT: Urban Xtreme 4/370 Nudgee Road, Hendra https://www.urban-xtreme.com.au/

THE OBLITERATION ROOM - THE GALLERY OF MODERN ART

Yayoi Kusama Room The Obliteration

The Gallery of Modern Art Conceptual art installations and toddlers might not seem like an obvious fit, but the obliteration room at GOMA is the ultimate exercise in accessible art. It’s also one room you’ll be delighted to watch your kids ‘obliterate’. This is one of the most popular interactive exhibitions ever to visit the Gallery of Modern Art, not least because of its mass appeal to both adult and children of all ages. The installation by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama will run until the 11 February 2018 and dots will build up until every trace of white has been obscured. When your kids arrive they will be given a set of brightly coloured dots and permission to stick them anywhere. The room itself is the ultimate blank canvas, full of interesting white furniture and objects, all of which are firmly stuck in place. Entry is FREE and the Obliteration Room is open from 10am-5pm daily. Closed Good Friday, Christmas and Boxing Day Simple perfection.

Hot Tip!

After your visit to the Gallery of Modern Art you can head to the Museum and take a walk around the Discovery Centre and The Wild State Gallery. It is truly incredible to have such free family friendly activities in the centre of our wonderful city!

COMMUNITY GARDENS Gardening with kids is underrated. It is the perfect way to get them offline, engaged in an activity that takes longer than a minute and involved in a project where they can literally watch their hard work be rewarded before their very eyes. With the abundance of native plants suitable for our climate in South-East Queensland, there’s sure to be one that suits your style. Remember, it’s never too early to start educating your kids about plant and wildlife conservation, and native planting is a wonderful way to achieve this! Our local councils have done the hard work for you and found the best native plants that have adapted to local conditions. This means they will thrive with just a little bit of love and care from you and your Brisbane Kids. Most of the plants available are grown from seed collected within Redlands Conservation Reserves and then grown onsite. Indigiscapes is an environmental education centre with themed gardens featuring plants native to the Redlands area. The centre provides handy tips on how to plan your garden at home and volunteers are on hand to provide advice.
