EXPLORE WILDLIFE HQ AT THE BIG PINEAPPLE

An oversized piece of fruit, a chugging train, and loads of cute animals–what’s not to love about a day out at Wildlife HQ and The Big Pineapple at Woombye on the Sunshine Coast?!

THE BIG PINEAPPLE

The first thing you will notice as you approach The Big Pineapple is the massive, bright yellow tropical fruit standing proud and dazzling in the sun beside Nambour Connection Road.

Recently refurbished to bring the Aussie icon back to life, visitors can now get up close to The Big Pineapple, touch its newly painted surface, and take as many selfies as your camera can hold. You can’t venture inside just yet, unfortunately, however this will be possible again in the near future.

After checking out the pineapple, we recommend grabbing a snack or drink at the café and letting the kids experience the new playground before grabbing your tickets and heading over to Wildlife HQ.

Tip: The best pics of The Big Pineapple can be captured from the corners of the decked area!

THE PINEAPPLE TRAIN

For a novel way to arrive at Wildlife HQ, jump aboard the heritage-listed Pineapple Train! Departing from The Big Pineapple station every half hour and dropping excited guests off at Koala Station at Wildlife HQ, tickets can be purchased from the ticket desk at The Big Pineapple.

Tip: Buy a combination ticket if you are wanting to ride the train and visit Wildlife HQ.

WILDLIFE HQ

The lush grounds of Wildlife HQ are brimming with cheeky animals waiting for you to come and say hi.

Interesting animals from Asia, Africa, South America, and Australia now call Wildlife HQ home, including capybaras, meerkats, Tasmanian devils, quokkas, sun bears, and tamarins, just to name a few.

The collection of koalas lazing in the trees are fascinating to watch, as are the playful marmosets, siamangs, and the squirrel monkeys.

To learn more about the gorgeous (and not so gorgeous) animals at Wildlife HQ, be sure to attend one of the zoo keeper talks, which are held throughout the day.

ANIMAL EXPERIENCES

Enhance your adventure at Wildlife HQ with the addition of an awesome Animal Encounter. With a variety of cute and cuddly animals to choose from, visitors can get up close and personal with their chosen animal, give them a feed, and chat with the knowledgeable keepers about these fascinating creatures.

Animal encounters can be booked online, but only run on certain days/times and do include strict guidelines, so keep this in mind when booking. Animals on offer for these one-of-a-kind encounters do vary, but generally include meerkats, emperor tamarins, red pandas, quokkas, koalas, marmosets, dingoes, and a variety of reptiles.

For an extra special Wildlife HQ experience, you can even arrange to be Zoo Keeper for the Day, attend a night zoo guided tour, or even arrange for the mobile zoo to come to you.

WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT WILDLIFE HQ

Families with young children will love the compact nature of Wildlife HQ. You don’t have to walk long distances between viewing each enclosure and there are often smaller crowds, which means you don’t have to jostle for a space to get a close look at the animals. We love that ticket prices are reasonable too, making it an affordable day out for many families.

GETTING THERE

The Big Pineapple and Wildlife HQ are located at 76 Nambour Connection Road in Woombye, just a few minutes from the Nambour turn-off on the M1. You can find out more about Wildlife HQ here.

SPEND A DAY IN THE CITY AND SOUTH BANK NATURE AND OUTDOOR EXPERIENCES

With the sun shining and the humidity still low, Spring is one of the best times to enjoy the outdoors in beautiful Brisbane. Discover a surprising array of nature-based activities for families in Brisbane’s CBD and South Bank.

CITY ITINERARY

Start your family adventure at Roma Street Parkland, where two fantastic playgrounds await in stunning garden settings. Watch your kids delight in the stepping stones, climbing walls, and tunnel slides while you relax in the peaceful, shaded surroundings.

Extend your experience with a stroll through the city to the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens, home to another impressive playground and a charming café that is perfect for a morning tea break. If you’re still feeling energetic, cap off your day with a walk from the gardens and across the Goodwill Bridge to South Bank to extend your urban exploration.

SOUTH BANK ITINERARY

Your kids will love a relaxing stroll along the pram-friendly Clem Jones Promenade as you play tourist in your own city. If you have older kids, you might even consider hiring some segways for a more active tour. While in South Bank, head to the Rainforest Walk and learn about growing edible gardens at the Epicurious Garden.

If your kids are keen to delve further into nature at South Bank, then a visit to Queensland Museum is worth considering. Not only is it free, but their Discovery Centre and Wild State Exhibition focus on local flora and fauna; making it the perfect way to cap off the day. These areas seamlessly blend city convenience with natural beauty for nature enthusiasts or those seeking to make the most of Brisbane’s urban oasis.

ACTIVE OUTDOOR ITINERARY

If your family prefers more action when outdoors, there are plenty of options to get your heart racing in Brisbane. Outdoor fitness centres like the Waterline Park precinct at Queen’s Wharf are great places to work up a sweat.

You can try one of the epic stair climbs in Brisbane to work the legs and lift the heart rate. Test your stamina on the vibrant red steps of Jacob’s Ladder. Another option is the 120-step climb connecting Howard Smith Wharves to Wilson Outlook Reserve, where the exquisite view of the Story Bridge from the top will make the ascent worthwhile (so we hear).

Kangaroo Point also offers thrilling outdoor experiences, with the riverside walk providing glorious city views and the Kangaroo Point Stairs providing a physical challenge. For those seeking a more exhilarating experience, consider booking one of the action-packed adventures available at Riverlife. Try a guided outdoor rock climbing adventure on Kangaroo Point Cliffs, or cruise along on a kayaking tour of the Brisbane River for a more memorable way to be active and have fun in the river city.

And for arguably the best views of Brisbane, a guided adventure climb to the top of the Story Bridge will definitely tick the box!

THE BEST OF THE SUNSHINE COAST

Entertain the whole family without spending a fortune with a huge number of ways to see the Sunshine Coast on a budget, including markets, farm tours, strawberry picking, and a visit to The Ginger Factory.

There’s no better time than springtime to explore some incredible Sunshine Coast playgrounds for kids. Must-visits include Adventure Playground in Mooloolaba and Aura Dino Park in Nirimba.

If you’re staying on the coast, why not explore further afield with a day trip? Easy to get there and back within a day, check out Noosa Everglades, Lake Weyba, Blackall Tourist Drive, or one of the many others on our list.

Discover Mooloolaba, Coolum and Maroochydore – some of the best family friendly areas on the Sunshine Coast. With great beaches for kids, plenty of accommodation options, and restaurants aplenty, you could park and stay for a week or more.

It’s not only on the Gold Coast where you can learn to surf! The Sunshine Coast has some fantastic surf schools for kids to learn the skill, or you could even try a class together!

Adventure Playground, Mooloolaba

Surf Lessons

NEAR THE BEACH

Pretend to be pirates at Maroochydore’s recently refurbished Cotton Tree Playground. Complete with a pirate ship, log stepper, and all-abilities bird’s nest swing.

Dig your toes in the sand at Mudjumba Beach. You’ll find all the Sunny Coast locals visit this little-known gem nestled in between busier Mooloolaba and Coolum on a regular basis.

Watch sharks glide over your head at SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast in Mooloolaba. Walk along this aquarium’s incredible underwater tunnel and be amazed at the diversity of marine life.

Discover all the fun things to do in Noosa with kids, like eating your weight in hand-crafted, artisanal gelato at Happy Pops, or delicious chocolate at the Noosa Chocolate Factory (we highly recommend their rocky road!)

Snap a selfie with the Big Pelican, Noosaville’s famous feathered friend has been delighting Queensland kids since the 1970s and can be found on the foreshore of the Noosa River.

NEAR THE MOUNTAINS

Enjoy spectacular views from the top of Mount Coolum. On a clear day, you can see all the way up to Noosa and down to Caloundra. Note: This is a steep climb so might be best for bigger kids. Find waterfalls hidden in plain sight. Just off Buderim’s bustling business district is the Buderim Forest Waterfall Walk. It encompasses 45 hectares of pristine rainforest and stunning waterfalls

Aussie World will keep toddlers, teens, and everybody in between entertained. Ride on the restored 1927 carousel, hop onto the ferris wheel, and try not scream on the Wasp Roller Coaster.

Enjoy (or be terrified by!) a parrot sitting on your shoulder at Maleny Botanic Gardens and Bird World, which features over 700 native and exotic birds from around the world.

Take a step back in time at the Sunshine Coast’s very own (and Australia’s largest) castle. Cross Sunshine Castle’s moat and get ready to go exploring through medieval times.

Head to our website for more Sunshine Coast inspiration these holidays.
