Cedar Creek in Samford has been a popular choice for Brisbane families to swim for many years. This charming location has a lot to offer with its deep rock pools and flowing streams.

Bunya Crossing Reserve Swimming Hole in Bunya is arguably one of Brisbane’s best natural swimming holes. It’s a perfect spot for swimming and watersports. Dogs on lead are also welcome!

Lower Portals at Mt. Barney is perfect for active families who enjoy hiking. The three-hour roundtrip hike has steep descents and isn’t suited for beginners. The reward for the effort is a stunning swimming hole surrounded by granite walls.

Lake Moogerah in the Scenic Rim is located just over an hour south-west of Brisbane and is popular among families for swimming, fishing, and water sports like sailing and jet skiing. A designated swimming area is available at AG Muller Park.

20 THINGS TO DO ON THE SUNSHINE COAST

CLOSE TO THE OCEAN

Catch the coastal breezes with a wander through Noosa National Park, where you’ll discover amazing flora and fauna, as well as some breathtaking views of the ocean surrounding Noosa Heads.

You can’t get fresher than just-caught seafood at the Sunshine Coast! Buy dinner from one of Mooloolaba’s best seafood retailers for fresh fish, prawns and local oysters.

A natural ‘lake’ forms at the mouth of Currimundi Creek, Currimundi Lake is the perfect, relaxed spot for the kids to have a splash. Bring your inflatables, SUPs, kayaks, or fishing gear and make a day of it.

Challenge the kids to a game of mini golf outdoors at Maroochy River Mini Golf. This nature-filled course features great views out to Mount Coolum, with great-value family meal and putt putt packages.

Kids of all ages will love the epic Bli Bli Watersports Complex. Teens can learn to wakeboard like a pro or slide down massive waterslides, while the whole family can enjoy the inflatables or even catch a few Barra.

Bli Bli Watersports Complex

INLAND & HINTERLAND

Get lost in the hedge maze, play 18 holes of mini golf, splash in the water play areas, or just have a ball exploring Amaze World in Tanawha. (TIP: Head to our ‘Local Vouchers’ section in this magazine for a Summer discount!)

Throw the scooters or bikes in the car and let the kids loose on the traffic track paths at Pedal Park in Baringa. Along with the track featuring a tunnel, speed bumps, a bridge, genuine road signage and REAL traffic lights, there’s also a great playground here.

You’ve definitely driven past it, but why not make a stop at the Banana Bender Pub in Palmview? Located next to Aussie World, it’s a quirky, bright and family-friendly venue where you can eat, drink, and enjoy the playful vibe – perfect for a pitstop!

Gardners Falls in Maleny is a fantastic spot for families to spend time together in the great outdoors; whether you enjoy a dip in the shallow wading pools, or the excitement of the more extreme rope swings.

Visit one of the quaintest towns on the Sunshine Coast – Montville’s adorable main street’s fudge shops, cuckoo clocks, and antique stores have something the whole family will enjoy.

It is possible to do the Sunshine Coast with kids on a budget. Free activities we love include mountain hikes to waterfalls through lush rainforest, exploring local markets, and visiting The Ginger Factory.

Jump in the car and take a day trip from the coast to Lake Weyba, along Blackall Tourist Drive, to the Noosa Everglades, or to one of the many other locations on our list which are all doable in a day or less.

Taste the Sunshine Coast’s best donuts at one of Kenilworth Country Bakery’s locations in Kenilworth, Mooloolaba or Bribie Island. (TIP: They often sell out before closing time, so get in early!)

20 THINGS TO DO ON THE GOLD COAST

CLOSE TO THE OCEAN

Touch the spirit that lives in the heart of the Gold Coast at Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre at Burleigh Head, where your whole family can immerse themselves in local Aboriginal culture.

Escape the sun and explore all the activities (and shopping) on offer in Surfers Paradise. From indoor bowling and mini golf, to escape rooms, arcades, and more, you’ll find something to please every family member (we promise!).

Make sure you introduce yourselves to David Fleay Wildlife Park’s newest resident, Frisby, a 408kg estuarine crocodile who measures 4.3m in length! The park is also home to dozens of other local wildlife species. (Visitors must pre-book online)

Explore MacIntosh Island Park, which encompasses multiple playgrounds, a cascading stream, and beautifully manicured lawns. It is also a well-known bird sanctuary, where peacocks roam freely around the grounds.

Stroll the 3.5km Federation Walk Coastal Reserve pedestrian walkway that stretches from Philip Park near Sea World to the Seaway on The Spit – one of the few remaining areas with an established dune system on the Gold Coast.

David Fleay Wildlife Park

INLAND & HINTERLAND

Take a family hike to a breathtaking waterfall in Springbrook National Park. Purling Brook Falls flows all year round and provides a real reward for your 4km trek (this is best suited to slightly older kids).

Venture just over the border and visit Tropical Fruit World, a working farm that grows more than 500 varieties of exotic fruits over 175 acres. Tour the grounds on the Plantation Safari train and taste test the in-season fruits growing.

Cool off in the mountains at Cedar Creek Falls at Tamborine Mountain, where a short hike will take you and the kids down to the crisp water of the rock pools. (TIP: Go after some rain to ensure lots of free-flowing water).

Sign up for an activity at Binna Burra. On weekends and school holidays, they offer a family-friendly program with everything from spotlighting tours and bush-tucker walks to archery and nature crafts.

Book some time out from the hot sun and head to an air conditioned indoor playground for a few hours. The kids can burn off some energy while the parents can sit back and relax with coffee.

THE BEST OF THE GOLD COAST

With so many seaside options, you’ll be amazed by some of the best playgrounds on the Gold Coast Giving our Brisbane parks a run for their money, our favourite would be Palm Beach Parklands

Indulge in a buffet breakfast that’s fit for royalty at one of the many locations across the coast. There are Western and Asian breakfast options available with many offering gluten free options.

Which beach is the best beach? Tallebudgera continues to be one of the most popular destinations on the Gold Coast - please visit if you haven’t been before!

It has creek and surf swimming, fantastic showering facilities, a playground and a decent amount of carparks (that still fill up early - so get in quick!)

There are plenty of free things to do on the Gold Coast with Kids! One of our favourites is visiting HOTA (Home Of The Arts) in Surfers Paradise, with its expansive grounds, multiple galleries, and small swimming lagoon.

With a coastline filled with sea life, fishing is a wonderful and free activity you can enjoy with kids on the Gold Coast. Snapper Rocks, the Gold Coast Seaway, and Tallebudgera Creek are all popular spots to cast a line.
