hello welcome to our first edition

A couple of months ago, I had an idea. What if I created a wedding magazine? Something that Brisbane was yet to have its very own of, to fill with hints and tips, DIY ideas, trends, products and most importantly showcase what vendors in the Brisbane region really have to offer. So here goes... the very first edition of Brisbane Wedding Weekly. Brisbane Wedding Weekly will pull together a community of brides-to-be and Brisbane wedding vendors in not only a quarterly magazine, but also a weekly newsletter, blog and social network aimed at bringing Brisbane wedding vendors to you!

Brisbane Wedding Weekly is all about bringing you real weddings, clever ideas, visual inspiration and a touch of style. The goal is to bring you the best of what the region has to offer, along with a few national and international suppliers to mix it up a little! It has been a whirlwind of excitement putting together this e-magazine and I would like to thank all the wedding vendors and suppliers who contributed to this very first issue. Thank you for your support and gentle nudges in the right direction! I would also like to thank all you lovely brides-tobe for subscribing, liking, posting, commenting and showing Brisbane Wedding Weekly lots of love online! I know how many of you have been waiting in anticipation to read the first issue so without further ado, please grab a coffee and enjoy! Im off to open a bottle of bubbly...

Bridal Beauty Our wedding day is probably one of the most special days in a girl’s life. Along with getting the right dress the next most important item is getting the hair and makeup right. After all, we want to look our absolute best on our special day.

When creating your perfect wedding day look it’s important to assess what you want to create such as the overall theme and look you want to achieve. Always be open to change. This is the best part about having a trial before your wedding day. That way you can discuss with your stylist the best options for you. Sometimes what we visualise as being the best option may not always look how we want it to. 16

Sk i n Prepping your skin before the day is vital in creating a flawless makeup look. A cleanse, tone and moisturising routine is a necessity and should be started at least six months before the day if not before. Obviously there are so many different products available and you can include eye creams, masks etc into your routine to help your overall look. If there is one thing I can suggest it is to make sure you don’t introduce any new products into your routine too close to your wedding as you don’t want to have a reaction just before your wedding day. I always suggest to my clients a great skin care option is the Arbonne RE-9 Advanced skincare system as its botanical ingredients and anti-ageing properties really help to smooth out fine lines and create a great canvas to work with.

Foun d a t i o n To create a flawless and smooth skin complexion for your photos, getting the makeup base foundation right is essential. I always suggest a primer and it should be one that is created to perfectly suit the foundation your makeup artist is using on your day. That way you won’t get unwanted shine or variations in tone. My number one choice for any wedding day is Airbrush Makeup. Airbrush Makeup will give you the most perfect even tone and the smoothest looking skin. My airbrush foundation and primer of choice would be Velbella Airbrush Makeup as it is a mineral and water based high definition airbrush makeup that is specifically made for professional photographic work. It is so light that it won’t feel like you’re wearing makeup and it has a matte finish that will eliminate shine but allow a natural glow. This product is also botanical based and has anti-ageing properties. Velbella also offers an airbrush makeup kit for ladies to use every day and this is a great option for brides who are doing their own makeup for their special day.

E ye M ake up It is through eye makeup that each bride’s individuality appears. This is where you want to get it right. There are many different ways you can create eye makeup for your special day. You need to research this so you can tell your makeup artist exactly what you want. Smoky eyes, to natural browns, to winged eyeliner all create very different looks for you. You want the look to tie into the overall wedding theme as well as the hairstyle you choose. For example if you choose a vintage hairstyle and a classic vintage theme for your wedding it might be a good idea to choose a vintage winged eye liner with a natural shimmer toned eye shadow. Shimmer definitely has its place in bridal eye makeup as it adds a touch of glamour without being over the top. The eye shadows and shimmers I use on most of my brides are the eye shadows from Inglot and the shimmers from Australian brand SHE, they are truly amazing.

Bl ush

H ai r

Blush is sometimes thought of as being old fashioned but this is not the case. Blush will help to brighten the face and create a natural glow. Blush and highlighting is used to create light and shade throughout the makeup and is essential in a bridal look. Without it your face will fade in your photos. My choice of blush would be Velbella Airbrush Makeup as the airbrush blush will ensure longevity for the wedding day.

Creating your wedding hair can be a difficult task. In order to choose your wedding hair it’s important to look at your overall style. Take into consideration your dress and what will suit it. Your hairstylist should also be able to take you through styles that will suit your face and body shape along with your dress and overall theme of your wedding. Having hair high on the head and pulled back harshly may suit one girl but not another. It’s important to have a few options and the same principle applies. Be open to lots of options as what you thought will look great may not suit you in the end.

Lip s Lipstick is once again a personal choice and pivotal in creating the right makeup look for your day. A nude lip may be needed if you are going for a natural look makeup. Pink will add a touch of colour and a classic look. Red could be used if you are trying to create a vintage look and goes wonderfully with winged eyeliner for a Hollywood glamour look. Lip liner must be used for longevity and a lip stain can also be used if your makeup artist thinks it’s necessary.

Boots Photography Tell us a little about your background? My background is in admin. I spent a few years doing that before I had the guts to quit my job and study something I really cared about. And the rest, as they say is history. From the first day I knew I had made the right decision and It didn’t take long before I knew my dream would be to do weddings full time. I started out small, worked really hard and made connections within in the industry and quickly grew from there. Its strange to think now that there was ever a time where I wasn’t a florist. It feels so naturally a part of who I am. I’m so lucky to do this everyday.

Talk us through a typical day at Blossom and Twine? There are two sides to my job - The first few days of the week I spend at my desk. There are always emails to reply to, paperwork to be done and weddings to plan for. That’s broken up with bridal consultations which are much more enjoyable! The end of the week I’m at my work bench. Typically my day starts early with coffee and a market run. If I’m preparing for a wedding I’ll probably be arranging til late at night with another early start the next day. Looking at beautiful flowers all day definitely makes up for that side of things!

What is your favourite flower? I get this question a lot and I can never answer it very well! It would probably come down to poppies, ranunculus and peonies. Do you have a favourite Brisbane venue? There are some beautiful venues around Brisbane. I love anywhere with exposed brick or an industrial feel. But I can’t go past outdoor ceremony and receptions - The Botanic Gardens are great for that.

What is it that you enjoy about doing flowers for weddings? The best part about doing wedding flowers is the look on the bride’s face when she sees her bouquet for the first time. It sounds cheesy but it really is the most beautiful thing! There are usually gasps and sometimes tears and it always makes the hard work worth it! Tell us about your favourite wedding you have prepared flowers for? This year my only sister got married in Tasmania. How could that not be my favourite?! We carried large, white and green bouquets filled with blooms and foliage spilling over, there was moss and foliage everywhere. It was rustic and wild yet still elegant and just so beautiful. I will never forget it!

James Day

Cassandra Eggert

Any advice for a bride-to-be when it comes to flowers? Be flexible! Have specific ideas of what you want but remember that you might want flowers that aren’t in season. Trust your florist – if you give her an idea of what you want but then trust her to do her thing, you’ll end up with a great result!

Cake and Lala is the story of two girls united by a love of aesthetics. Casey (Cake) and Tessa (Lala) met in 2008 whilst working as wedding stylists. Before long their working relationship transformed into a close friendship. When the styling business the girls worked for closed down, the pair decided to take a break from the wedding industry and pursue other avenues. Casey moved into visual merchandising, whilst Tessa studied natural therapy and worked as a makeup artist. When Tessa got engaged in 2011, the two spent 12 months planning her wedding, culminating in a stunning DIY ceremony in New Zealand. Soon after, Casey and Tessa both had a severe case of “post wedding depression”. Both looking for a creative outlet, with a desire to jump back into the wedding scene, and following an inspiring trip to New York City, Cake and Lala was born.

have otherwise thought of,” said Casey. Cake and Lala has been in operation for three months now and the girls have developed a gorgeous range of cards, stationary and invitations. They can work with you to develop a personalised stationary set, or you can choose from their design range. The girls advise expressing your personality and style in your wedding stationary, saying, “invitations are a great way to give your guests an idea of the type of wedding they are expecting to attend.” “We love being creative and inspiring brides to think outside the box!” says Casey, “It’s so satisfying to see our ideas come to life and to be able to play such a personal part in the most important day of someone’s life.”

With Casey’s background in Interior Design, and Tessa’s Art History/Makeup Artistry qualifications, the pair describe themselves as “two halves of the same brain”. “We have quite different styles, but this helps us to challenge our individual ideas and come up with creations we may not

THE PROPOSAL I woke up to a message that Zach had written on the blackboard outside my bedroom that read, “Good morning beautiful, get ready, you’ll be picked up soon”. Our friend (and soon-to-be groomsman) Sam arrived at my house and drove me out towards the country. He eventually pulled down a dirt-track and dropped me off. I saw Zach standing in the middle of a park, surrounded by photo frames suspended from trees. When we got to each other, Zach kneeled down and asked me to marry him. After a lot of twirling and tears we sat down to a breakfast that Zach had organised. He had collected a box of memories from over the years and written messages on the hanging photo frames. We spent the morning there reminiscing about our relationship and getting excited about the future. SUBSCRIBE | www.brisbaneweddingweekly.com.au

FUNNY MOMENT We were in the wedding car and had just left my house on the way to the chapel when I realised I had left my second pair of shoes (flats for photos and dancing) behind. The poor driver had to turn the car around at the bottom of our narrow street and take us back up the hill. I’m sure the neighbours had a good chuckle watching our wedding car doing a 5-point turn and racing back up the street.

ADVICE FOR BRIDES TO BE Don’t sweat the small stuff and remember the bigger picture. Though at times it may not seem like it - the centrepieces, the seating arrangements, the favours, and all of the other bits and pieces that make up a wedding are not the most important part of your wedding day. The most important part of your wedding day is that it is the day you will be marrying the man that you love. Take quality time out together and really be there for each other both in the lead up to and on your wedding day. For me, it’s the memories of the butterflies in my stomach, the first glance we shared, and the warmth of our friends and family that made our day special – and they are all things you simply can’t plan.

Johanna + Ged How did he propose? We had planned to go watch the sunrise on the beach but when the weather became rainy and stormy we went for a drive up to the look-out on Mount Mee. Ged had written me a letter...when I finished reading it he proposed. Do you have a theme for your wedding in mind? What about colours? The theme for our wedding is very country/DIY. We plan to make a lot of the decorations ourselves, so many of our ideas include hessian, lace, calico – very natural colours with a hint of a dusky-pink from our bridesmaid dresses. Where will you be looking for your wedding dress? I had a few friends suggest some places; Sugar & Spice Bridal, Roz La Kelin and Hilde Heim. However I ended up getting a dress from Sugar & Spice Bridal. Dream Brisbane wedding location? Originally, we wanted to have an outdoor wedding on a property out of Brisbane and hold the reception in a marquee but planning our wedding in the summer we changed our minds. We have booked our reception at Samsonvale District & Community Hall between Samford and Dayboro where there is plenty of potential to be creative. Honeymoon Ideas? We love the idea of the Maldives for the honeymoon but unfortunately it is something well out of our price range – instead our travel agent recommended a few places that offer the same bungalow feel with half the cost. We’re currently tossing up between Fiji and Bora Bora. Did you have an engagement party? We had an engagement party not long after we got engaged. It was very low key, we had a make your own burger bar and enjoyed music and conversation with the people we love most. Who was your photographer? Our photographer is Hannah Photography

Faith + Bryan How did he propose? Bryan and I got engaged in January this year. It was kind of unexpected but I also had been guessing that it was coming. On our one-year anniversary he took me out at 3am for a “surprise”. To my delight he took me on a sunrise hot air balloon ride followed by a gourmet champagne breakfast at O’Reilly’s Grand Homestead & Vineyard. When we arrived he had a little table set up for us. I was very surprised because he can’t keep a secret to save his life but he kept this very well. We didn’t really have much money as he was studying full time so I felt pretty spoilt. After breakfast, we walked around the vineyard hand in hand and we stood under some beautiful shady trees and there he proposed. He said “Fayfee will you marry me?” I laughed and said “Really?” and he got down on one knee and pulled the little box out of his jacket pocket and said “Really!” The ring is absolutely stunning. He designed it himself and had it made for me. Do you have a theme for your wedding in mind? What about colours? It’s a night time garden wedding, country vintage themed and colours are Mint and Peach, as Bryan’s favourite colour is orange and mine is minty blue. Where will you be looking for your wedding dress? Etsy or my mum or sister will make it. Dream Brisbane wedding location? Anywhere outside. I love the location I picked... Osteria – Casuarina. Honeymoon Ideas? Malaysia and Thailand for shopping and adventure. Did you have an engagement party? Our engagement party was at the Spring Lake Hotel and we had over 100 people as we are only having a small ceremony. We had friends and family celebrating with us from all over Queensland, and it was an awesome night! We were so blessed by everyone who came. Who was your photographer? Our engagement photo shoot was done by Matt and Jess from Collective Photography. 92
