This edition we are excited to bring you a look into marriage. We spend so much time getting ready for the big wedding day, but we don’t often talk about what comes after. We have interviewed couples who have been married for different lengths of time - from one year to sixty years - to see how things like disagreements, love and wedding dresses change over the course of a marriage! We have also included an ‘ask the experts’ section where our focus for this edition is beauty. We asked our brides what questions they had and got them answered by three of Brisbane’s best makeup artists. Have a look for this exclusive starting on page nine. With temperatures starting to rise here in Brisbane, we have put together a list of ideas on how to keep your Brisbane Summer wedding cool on page 14. When to get a facial before your wedding day? I always advise my brides that if they haven't had or been having facials then before your

wedding is no time to start! If you want your skin to shine then invest in a pack of facials from a day spa and start a year to 6 months out good skin doesn't happen overnight What can a bride do about those unexpected spots? What can you do?! Pimples are a girl’s worst nightmare and trust me I know! I always tell my brides to leave them alone getting In front of the mirror and squeezing it till it dies is not the answer - pop a cold tea spoon on it to take out some of the redness- your makeup artist will cover most of it - and your photographer (if asked) can smooth it out. Bride question: What should we be looking for in a makeup artist for our wedding days? What questions should we be asking? You want to have a makeup/ hair artist that you feel comfortable with- someone that can have a laugh with you all and keep the mood light. Ask them what their favourite type of look is, what styles most brides ask for - is this style that you like. If products are important to you ask what they stock in their hair/ makeup kit. Look at their past work and pick someone whose work you have seen and liked. A lot of couples think that the hair and makeup part of the wedding should be at a lower cost - but don't forget that your makeup has to last for over 12 hours and look amazing that whole time - makeup is the one thing you don't want to get wrong.

Karla from Blissful Makeup Describe your favourite bridal look… Soft Dewy. Fresh makeup to compliment the individual - makeup isn’t a mask but a tool to enhance what we already have. Glowy with an emphasis on eyes with a pretty lip. When to get a facial before your wedding? Start six months out from the big day and the last one being a refresher 3 days out! What can a bride do about those unexpected spots? Do not touch them and don’t pick! If the skin is raised and not open, makeup will cover it, but if the blemish is broken skin it is more difficult to cover. Use a zinc based cream to heal them. Bride question: How do you affordable prepare your skin for your wedding day? There are so many treatments, how do you know where to start and what will benefit your skin? I think you need to look long term - beauty is from the inside out. By eating well and exercising, this will show immediately in your skin. Follow this up with a daily beauty routine of cleanse, tone, moisturise and using a sunscreen. If you have a lovely canvas to work with the makeup will compliment your natural beauty. There are many brands out on the market, choose one to suit your budget – research the internet and talk to your friends see what they use.

Lauren from Velbella Describe your favourite bridal look… Our favourite signature look would have to be a romantic smoky eye with a touch of shimmer. It’s all about enhancing the bride’s natural beauty. When I am teaching professional makeup application I always say to my students that you don’t want to create a certain makeup look, you want to create a piece of art and what I mean by this is you think of your bride’s face as the canvas. You work with their uniqueness and create a look that suits them. Don’t just follow a type or style of makeup you have seen or learnt. Customise what you are offering and you will ensure your client always looks their best. When to get a facial before your wedding? At Velbella we have the luxury of having an onsite beauty therapist at our ‘One Stop Beauty and Bridal Studio’ so we highly recommend a beauty regime leading up to your wedding. We suggest starting about 6-12 months out from your wedding day. We can’t beat microdermabrasion with a collagen face mask as part of your routine. Our fabulous beauty therapist Melinda Robinson offers a range of different packages for our brides and we love that we can offer this service. Our biggest advice to our clients is ‘don’t try a new beauty regime too close to your wedding’. By starting a few months before you can make sure you don’t have any reactions to the products as you won’t know how your skin will react until you try it. Bride question: What should we be looking for in a makeup artist for our wedding days? What questions should we be asking? Everyone knows the bride needs to look amazing on their wedding day so it’s essential that the bride achieves the look they are going for. Every makeup artist has their own particular style. The best way to find a great makeup artist that you resonate with is to looks in their

portfolio on their website, see if they are active on social media and ask others who have used their services before. You want to make sure you get exactly what you want but also feel like you are comfortable enough to share a very special morning with your chosen makeup artist. At Velbella we strive to go above and beyond the calling of a makeup artist. We always help out and have been know to regularly dress the bride and bridal party, help clean up the apartment, sew and fix things that have unexpectedly broken, add the veil, assist with photography and more. An experience makeup artist knows what they are doing, they will charge accordingly. Usually if it seems too good to be true it probably is.

Best beauty tip? Individual lashes or flares as they are sometimes called are the key to perfect eyes, adding thickness to the lashes without looking over the top. They open up your eyes and make them pop. In our opinion lashes do for the eyes what killer high heels do for your legs.

Keeping Your Summer Wedding Cool The scorching summer Brisbane days are back, so we thought we would put together a couple of ideas to help alleviate the heat of a Brisbane summer wedding. Summer is one of the most popular times to get hitched in Brisbane because of the beautiful weather, however no one likes to be uncomfortable while dressed in their wedding best. The second thing to keep in mind about summer weddings in Brisbane is the potential for an afternoon storm. We have put together a couple of articles on our blog on embracing rain on your wedding day and also spoke to Brisbane photographers about how they handle wet weddings. So with the Brisbane summer weather in mind, here are our top tips for keeping your cool!

Drink And Be Merry Fresh, cold, non-alcoholic drinks are a must! While you can spice them up by adding your favourite spirit, your wedding guests will thank you profusely for thinking of them while you have your photos taken. Juice looks ever so cute in mason jars with some fresh fruit or colourful straws added. A juice bar at your summer wedding is something simple but stunning, and you can be super creative with this too!

Beating The Sun With Sunglasses

While a pair of sunnies may not aid too much in cooling guests down, they are a super cool idea to have and can be used as wedding favours too. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget with the sun shining bright above, they will make for some great photos where no one will have to worry about squinting!

Creating Shade A very on-trend choice at the moment, but something worth considering is hiring teepeeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s for your guest to get out of the sun. You can put picnic blankets and cushions in them for guest to sit on while they enjoy their cooling drink or ice cream. An alternative is draping fabric over awnings or low tree branches to create shade. It certainly makes for a beautiful whimsical setting!

Food For Thought These eye catching creations have become ever so popular for summer weddings. Simple and easy to make, they will offer your guests just a bit of relief from the summer sun, not to mention have them talking about such a cute idea. An alternative to making them yourselves is hiring someone to do it for you. There are so many great alternative food vans popping up at weddings, why not an ice cream truck or cart?

Fans Fans may seem like an obvious idea but come in so many varieties, you can add them to you wedding as a form of styling. Or get more creative and convert your order of service at the ceremony or menu at the reception into fans like below. You know that if it is hot, people will start waving them to help cool themselves down anyway, so why not just add a handle!

BRITTA & BEN Married: 31/08/2013 | ONE YEAR Marriage means committing yourself to one person for the rest of your life. A successful marriage needs to be honest and open. Your relationship should be built on friendship so that you can withstand the ups and downs of married life. We often argue about what we need from the grocery shop. Pearls of wisdom for resolving an argument include having a laugh and never going to sleep upset. Always start a new day fresh with no grudges or resentment. Our wedding cost $20,000. We wanted to pay for the wedding ourselves so we saved just over

half before we got engaged and saved the rest while planning. It was great to start our marriage off without a wedding day debt! My wedding dress was classic. Strapless with a boned bodice and an a-line tulle skirt. My advice to brides getting married soon would be to take a step back whilst wedding planning. Remember that this day is about the two of you and what you want, but also keep in mind it is one day in the rest of your lives together. Trying to live up to what others expect of you will just make you unhappy. Also, hire a wedding coordinator. They can save you time and money!

A successful marriage needs love, trust and patience.

My wedding dress was simply and elegant. As we had a pretty low key wedding, I didn’t want anything too over the top.

We often argue about money, but having two businesses is not easy. But we manage. Pearls of wisdom for resolving an argument include flowers and chocolate - just kidding. Try not to get too emotional. Instead try to see each other’s perspective and talk it through. Our wedding cost $25k – we had a small cocktail style wedding and saved money by designing our own stationery, purchasing flowers for the tables from the flower markets and not going crazy with 18

My advice to brides getting married soon would be to hire a stylist/coordinator! They are seriously the most amazing people ever! Not only do they have wonderful ideas, industry knowledge and the best organizational skills but they are there to take the stress away on the day by setting up and arranging everything. Make sure you get in touch with vendors early with a clear idea about what you want. Trust their skill and they will create something amazing for you!

ANNETTE & DARRYL Married: 07/07/2007 | SEVEN YEARS Marriage means finding the person in the whole world who you would choose to do everything with over anyone else. Whether it be travelling the world, having a baby or shopping, I prefer doing things with my husband. He is my best friend. I don’t think we can pretend to know what makes a successful marriage, we’ve only been doing it for seven years. The thing that has worked for us is the fact that we have grown together throughout our marriage. We are more the same now than we were when we got married. I think that has come about by us constantly talking and communicating about what we want out of life and how we feel about life right now. Marriage is not a one way street. Compromise is a must in any relationship. And that means compromise without any resentment. Saying “I love you” everyday (and meaning it) doesn’t hurt either. Our wedding cost $30,000. My wedding dress was the perfect princess dress. I had it made from a picture in my head. It was pure silk, strapless with a straight neckline. The bodice was covered in Italian lace. I had a full “princess” skirt with tulle petticoat and at random points over my skirt I had silk and beaded flowers with a small amount of skirt gathered up. My advice for brides getting married soon: No one else matters. It’s yours and your partners wedding. Do it how you want. In retrospect, the one thing I would have changed about our wedding was the number of people. We had a large wedding of 120 people and really, only 70-80 of them are important to us still. raphy erry Photog

KARLA & ANDREW Married: 01/05/1993 | TWENTY ONE YEARS Marriage means 100% commitment from both sides. Respect for one another. What makes a successful marriage: Communication and intimacy is what makes a successful marriage. The thing we probably argue about the most is probably money, not the big investments but the daily things. Also not understanding expectations from a lack of communication. Life is busy and sometimes we forgot to fill the other one in – we are not mind readers. Oh and the groceries! Resolve arguments by always kissing your partner goodnight! Be the bigger person and move on, although you don’t have to admit defeat. Our wedding cost about $10,000. Our honeymoon and reception were our biggest expense. Followed by photography. My wedding dress was empire line, ivory with beaded French lace on the bodice and long sleeves. Add a crazy head piece with flowers, beads, tulle chase, face veil and a long train! It was very 1990’s! My advice for future brides is that your wedding day is one day and your marriage is a lifetime. When inviting people choose people you hope will be in your life in 20 years time. You don’t have to invite everyone you work with – They’ll understand the expense.

NINA & GREG Married: 22/01/1983 | THIRTY ONE YEARS

Marriage means spending everyday with the one I love, in a true partnership that really is ‘until death do us part’. What makes a successful marriage besides the obvious (love, respect, honesty and loyalty) is ‘balance’. Every marriage is different, so what works for one, may not work for another. However, the balance needs to be right for yours. I think determining your roles early in the relationship, really helps! Taking on those tasks/ roles that you like or are good at, sharing some and relinquishing (or rejecting) others. Life circumstances change throughout the years, and those roles often need to be reviewed and tweaked or adjusted. When we did argue in the early years, it would have been about lack of balance. We crammed so much into the first six years of our marriage, I’m sure we both often felt that the balance was out of kilter. I’m happy to say since then, our circumstances (roles) have changed several times and we’ve adapted well. In recent years we’re more likely to disagree about each other’s meal scoring…we love MasterChef. When trying to resolve an argument, first make sure it’s worth the battle and is addressed properly, not swept under the carpet. If you both don’t fix the problem, it won’t go away. It will fester and rear its ugly head again. Secondly, when the argument is finished, it’s finished, and apologise if an apology is in order. Don’t stew over it or pout! To this day I have no idea how much our wedding cost. Mum and Dad took care of, and paid for, the vast majority of it. The invitations I made myself, 22

organised the dresses and created the silk flower bouquets. I arrived at the big white church in a limo, with Dad. The reception was at the family home, on a hot day in January (note the candle) in a large marquee and catered for. Looking back, I do question my choice of colours, but what I remember mostly is that we were having so much fun we didn’t want to leave. My wedding dress wasn’t the typical 1980’s style gown. There were no puffy sleeves or ruffles involved. A fitting bodice, overlaid with lace, long lace sleeves and a flowing skirt with a modest court train. The matching head cap was made by recovering my Mother’s, to which the veil was attached. The neckline was much higher than anticipated. It didn’t quite turn out like the photo in the magazine. Honestly, I didn’t mind, I was more looking forward to ‘being’ married than I was to everything involved with ‘getting’ married. My advice for couples getting married soon is ‘the day’ is about you and your partner, not about how impressed your friends and family will be. And, although incredibly important, remember that it is just one day out of the rest of your lives together. Celebrate and enjoy yourself!

JUNE & DOUG Married: 12/11/1955 | FIFTY NINE YEARS Marriage means a life-long commitment to love, honour and cherish one hundred percent. A successful marriage consists of mutual trust, love, respect, godliness, a devotion to God and his guidance, consideration for one another in all situations, total sharing of resources, having common goals in raising a family, creating an atmosphere of honesty and openness amongst the whole family. Common arguments: We really don’t have arguments. We work out any small disagreements by discussing them and being guided by the bible. Pearls of wisdom for resolving an argument: Never go to sleep on an argument. Always settle the problem so as when you get up in the morning you’re fresh.

Our wedding cost approximately 200 pounds. We had lots of loving people around us – we had friends who supplied cars and all the people from the church brought trifles and other dishes for the reception. My wedding dress was a white organza with ‘capure’ lace around the neck, sleeves and bodice with a ten foot train. I had it made by a dressmaker. I still have it but I cut the bottom off it because I wore it as a dress to a party once. I also had a pearl tiara with a tulle veil, and a bouquet made by my sister who was a florist. My advice for brides getting married soon is to remember that the wedding is just one day. Don’t feel pressured to spend your life’s savings (or your parents’!) on that day. Spend as much time preparing for your marriage as you do for your wedding and you will be off to a great start.

The proposal Luke flew me down to Melbourne under the pretence it was for a business meeting, and surprised me at the airport with a chauffeur and a Bentley. He took me to St Kilda pier where he got down on one knee and proposed by the water. We spent the rest of the weekend shacked up in the Hilton and exploring the city.

The proposal Adam turned up unannounced to my work and called me down to the carpark. I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sure what was happening at first but he had tears in his eyes and started telling me how important I was to him and how special he thought I was (still does I think). It was a bit of a blur but all of a sudden I had a gorgeous vintage ring on my finger and had to go back into the office. It turned out that for the last couple of nights he had been trying to find the right moment but we kept having one disaster after the next and it never came. He eventually realised that the right moment was right now and jumped in a cab from his work right away. We became engaged in the serene surrounds of my office carpark and it was perfect!

What does marriage mean to you? I never saw myself getting married had raised my son on my own since being a teenager, so the traditional life was already out the window in my mind and I was totally okay with that. Once Adam and I met and brought our little families together all of a sudden it had a bigger meaning, it felt like a commitment not just to the relationship but to all of our kids that we were a family together for our forever.

Advice for Brides To Be Everything goes so quickly, try to remember the way you felt at any given moment and remember the real reason you are doing this. Less is more and there will never be quite enough time. At the end of it all, it is out of your hands what happens and that is okay. Even the biggest disaster would be something to look back on and cherish together.

The proposal Matt took me away on a surprise weekend away for my birthday. We went to a beautiful place on the Sunshine Coast, which we had fallen in love with before. He took me out for breakfast the morning after my birthday and then to a little hidden beach we discovered on a previous trip. We collected shells and then it started to rain so we ran up the beach and stood under a tree. I wanted to keep running but Matt stopped me and told me he needed to ask me something. I started to get worried because he had tears in his eyes, but then he knelt down and asked me to make him the happiest man in the world. When we got back to our penthouse my whole family were there to surprise me and we had a big celebration!

Advice for Brides To Be Take a breath and remember what the whole day is about. A piece of advice a special friend gave to me which really helped - Remember to take your time walking down the aisle and look at your guests and groom. The day will be over before you know it so take in all the little things that make the day special, enjoy the speeches and dancing and just enjoy yourself and your husband. You shouldn't be stressed!

Funny moment There were so many funny moments throughout the night but the funniest for me was when Matt was repeating his vows to me, he had written that I was an amazing partner and Mother but instead he read out partner and lover. I couldn't stop laughing and he didn't realise until about 30 seconds later and corrected himself.

What does marriage mean to you I know that even if Matt and I weren't married we would still be together forever. There is something about your wedding day that heightens your love for each other and it does add something more special to the relationship. I feel so blessed I can share Mattâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s last name now!

THE PROPOSAL As a couple we would celebrate the anniversary of our first kiss. I proposed on the morning of the 10th anniversary of that day, we had driven up to Mt Tambourine for the weekend. As Gemma is quite a private person I decided to propose that morning before we went out. Once Gemma was ready to go out, I asked Gemma to close her eyes then I got the ring out from its hiding spot. When she opened her eyes I gave her the box with the ring in it and as she opened the box and saw what was inside I went down on one knee. I said â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Gemma Louise Sheldon, I love you, will you marry me?â&#x20AC;&#x2122; To my great relief and with a glimmer of tears in her eyes Gemma said yes.

Advice for Brides To Be Don't get stressed out about the things you can't control. Decide what is really important to you on the day and focus on that. At the end of the day, as long as you are married to the one you love, it was a complete success. Find a photographer you are comfortable with, and a great wedding coordinator is worth their weight in gold!
