FINDING YOUR PERFECT MATCH Words by Jaishri Johnstone

If you are a bride-to-be we can trust that you have found your perfect match, but what about your perfect bridal separates match? The new bridal fashion trend has walked the world’s runways and has made it’s way to our shores this season! More and more brides (myself included) seem to be saying “good-bye one piece traditional bridal gown” and “hello two-piece bridal baby”! This bridal appeal is simply tops and bottoms that allow the modern bride countless alternatives to choose from. Whether you want that extra princess ‘poof’, that delicate free flowing skirt or that midlength rocker bodice, bridal separates allow you to make it happen. Our Brisbane wedding fashion gurus at The Babushka Ballerina (TBB) show us how its done with their wide range of bridal separates to choose from. TBB’s double threat Sierra Ramke who is the Director and Creative Director of their bridal separates range, filled Brisbane Wedding Weekly in on this trend-setting bridal appeal. “With years of experience in the bridal industry it was typical to hear brides request "this top" with "that skirt” and that actually was the motivation behind our very first collection in 2012 and now has become

12

symbolic of what we do”. “We also promote the option of a ceremony and reception look, which is two individual looks that allow brides to wear the ultimate bridal look and perhaps change into something a little more comfortable for the reception, with two looks at a price well within an average of a $2000 budget”, said Sierra. Sierra mentioned, that it is commonly asked by brides-to-be if separates are bridal enough, but assures that their separates collation is fitted to perfection and that you would have no idea they are actually unattached. Depending on the designer, separates can be expensive or relatively modest in price. At TBB, separates for a full top and bottom look (often including two tops) range from $800- $2000. Alterations are also marginally cheaper as each individual piece can be easy to adjust, without having to open up the seam lines of a full gown. While TBB prices are modest some designer’s separates could start from $900 for tops and $2000 for bottoms. If you love individuality, versatility and personalising your own look, bridal separates might just be your perfect match!

WHAT THE HECK!

Recently, one of the most asked questions of the Brisbane Wedding Weekly team has been: What does a celebrant do and how do I pick one? All newly engaged couples know that they need a celebrant, but they are concerned about the who and the what. So we have gathered up some celebrants and asked them a bit about themselves in hopes that you might find one you love!

14

SAMANTHA TOWNEND samanthatownend.com.au GETTING INTO THE WEDDING GAME Well my friends have always called me a bit of a matchmaker, as I have successfully matched many couples. Then back in 2009 my friends started getting engaged and so I found myself dabbling in the wonderful world of weddings with them. That’s when the idea of being able to be a part of some of life’s greatest moments happened. So it started out for friends, then friends of friends and all of a sudden, I have the best full time job in the world!! (I shouldn’t even call it a job). FAVOURITE WEDDING Oh so many, as I come across a lot of different couples. I am also a HUGE animal lover, so if you have your fur babies –for example dogs or horses, than that makes my job even better. I even have a donkey coming up in a couple of weeks! However I should add, I actually got to be the Celebrant for my dad’s wedding in 2012. My family are a lot of fun (quirky too) and that day certainly was unforgettable.

CELEBRANT STYLE Personal. I like to think that I am personal to all my couples. WHAT ABOUT RELIGION As I am a civil celebrant and although not religious myself, I marry so many couples with different backgrounds and cultures. FAVOURITE BRISBANE VENUE Oh Brisbane has so many beautiful locations and being a Brisbane Gal myself, I love to go to them all. Best spots for ceremonies are on the River, but I do love Cloudland, Tattersall’s Club, Eves on the River and Bundaleer Gardens. VEIL OR FLOWER CROWN Flower crown, however I am more of a “touch of sparkle”, so a cute little hairpin is gorgeous.

LINDSAY CARROLL lindsaycarroll.net

GETTING INTO THE WEDDING GAME I didn’t find the wedding game. It found me! In early 2013, I was working full time as a lawyer and two very dear and newly engaged friends asked me to undertake the study to become a celebrant so that I could marry them this year! The rest is history. WHY A CELEBRANT Meeting young, creative lovers and working with them to craft a ceremony that reflects their own unique identities and what they represent together. Most clients go away as friends and I can be confident that going forward, I will get to share in the growth and strengthening of their marriage. That’s pretty amazing! PERSONALISING A WEDDING CEREMONY Think of me as the curator of your wedding ceremony. Throughout the planning process, I absorb all of the tales of love and lust, the couple’s vision for marriage and their own individual personality traits and ideas. When I’m figuratively fat with inspiration, it’s easy to personalise a wedding ceremony in a multitude of different ways. CHOOSING A CELEBRANT Choose a celebrant with style – style in the manner that they speak, style in the creative process that they undertake to create your ceremony, style in the way they present themselves! FAVOURITE WEDDING I recently curated a “flash mob reading” at a ceremony. How did it work? Ten guests at the ceremony hijacked the reading during the ceremony to all stand in their seats and contribute

a line of what was being read. This was all done in conjunction with the person performing the reading, but without the knowledge of the Bride and Groom. Sounds crazy, you say? It was! The look of shock and surprise on the faces of the Bride and Groom and the tears of joy that came next were absolutely unforgettable. They were so thankful that so many people special to them could contribute in that way to their ceremony. SAME-SEX MARRIAGE I can’t wait for the day that I can marry my friends in same sex relationships! CELEBRANT STYLE Expressive, engaging and adventurous! WHAT ABOUT RELIGION I worship the sun, the sea and a good brew. FAVOURITE BRISBANE VENUE Brisbane is brimming with gorgeous venues. My favourites include Bulimba Village, Lightspace and the Gardens Club. VEIL OR FLOWER CROWN Rock both! The veil for the ceremony and crown for the after party! WHAT YOU SAY TO A NERVOUS GROOM Nerves are normal! I think the moment before a bride arrives is a deeply personal moment - one of introspection and anticipation. Most grooms, in my experience, would prefer the opportunity to be present in the moment and appreciate that I know them well enough at that point not to feel like I need to break the ice!

GETTING INTO THE WEDDING GAME After witnessing a family wedding that lacked meaning, happiness and fun, I set out on a path to learn how to become a celebrant. Seven years later its now my full time career! WHY A CELEBRANT How crazy is it that two people could, let alone would, fall in love. Then even crazier that they would take the steps to commit to that love for the rest of their life. Well if they’re going to go that far I just want to be there and see it all happen, it’s awesome! FAVOURITE WEDDING The wedding at the Foo Fighters concert on my 30th birthday has got to be the coolest. Who has ever seen the Foo Fighters and Tenacious D play at a wedding reception? Mind you who has seen 30,000 uninvited guests come to a wedding reception held in a stadium? PICKING A CELEBRANT There’s thousand of celebrants, so make sure you choose an awesome one! 18

SAME-SEX MARRIAGE NOT IF BUT WHEN. CELEBRANT STYLE ENJOYABLE AND FUN. RELIGION I HAVE A FAITH BUT IT’S PERSONAL TO ME. FAVOURITE BRISBANE VENUE LIGHTSPACE, IT’S MY SPIRITUAL HOME. VEIL OR FLOWER CROWN NEITHER SUITS ME. GROOM ICE-BREAKER HER DAD IS NOW ASKING FOR THREE GOATS BEFORE HE WALKS HER DOWN THE AISLE.

MANDI FORRESTER-JONES vivaevents.com.au

BEING A CELEBRANT That pure joy at the moment when you change peoples lives irrevocably! The kiss! THE WEDDING CEREMONY All mine are personally written, I am not a cut and paste celebrant! I tell their story, I help them write their own personal, touching and often light hearted vows that reflect them as a couple. No “insert bride’s name here” for me! FAVOURITE WEDDING Lots but probably one I did for friends of mine, and when her daughter(so his step daughter) walked down the aisle she mouthed “I love you” to him! Truly blended family. Took a lot for me not to cry! ADVICE FOR BRIDES When you are standing up there facing your love and saying your vows, the only other person that is really close to you is the celebrant. Make sure it is someone you feel comfortable and have a rapport with. This person is responsible for the start of your married life and your big day, so make sure you like them!!

Jen Arhanic marriedbyjen.com

GETTING INTO WEDDINGS I’ve always had a passion for great events, and love a good bridal frock. So it was inevitable I would end up being in the wedding industry. I love my job! WHY A CELEBRANT I love meeting with couples, getting to know them and working with them to create something unique and memorable. THE ‘HOW TO’ OF A CEREMONY Start with a blank page! No two weddings should ever be the same. There’s about one minute of required words at a wedding, the rest is up to your imagination! I love brainstorming with my couples, we come up with some cool ideas! HOW TO CHOOSE A CELEBRANT Your celebrant should be professional and engaging but not so over-the-top that they will over-shadow you on your big day! And make sure you choose someone you feel relaxed and comfortable with.

Spring-Time Wedding Favours

Fine Creative Co. has the pleasure of bringing you another DIY idea. In keeping with our everpopular wedding favours theme,we bring you our sweet (pardon the pun!) infused sugar jars. These little handmade gifts are super easy to put together but are a delightful way of thanking your guests. They can be personalised in many ways to suit the style of your wedding and are a gorgeous way to add detail to your tablescapes. That’s why our infused sugar jars are the perfect do-it-yourself wedding favour. To get started all you need are some cute airtight jars, organic sugar and herbs or spices. We used dried rosebuds, lavender, citrus fruits, cinnamon and star anise. But don’t be afraid to experiment with other flavours and a mixture of sugars!

SUBSCRIBE | www.brisbaneweddingweekly.com.au

Simply prepare your ingredients we grated zest from the lemon and lime and finely diced the lavender. Ensure your little jars are clean and dry before placing the sugar and flavourings inside. A ratio of 2:1 sugar to herb/spice works best. After about two weeks the sugar will be infused (and will keep for up to three months). Finish each little jar with some embellishments. We dried some lemon and lime and used natural ribbon, twine and tags to complete our styling. Wouldn’t this pretty rosebud infused sugar jar be just perfect for a bridal shower or high tea?

22

Here is our little lemon, lime and lavender trio. Perfect for a naturally styled wedding.

SUBSCRIBE | www.brisbaneweddingweekly.com.au

We also made a larger infused sugar jar filled with fragrant cinnamon and star anise, which would make a thoughtful gift during the festive season. Perfect for baking gingerbread men or shortbread!

Creative ideas for using infused sugar jars are not limited to baking – they can be used to sweeten tea, rim a cocktail glass, add to french toast or sprinkle over porridge. Why not make some little handmade gift tags to attach to your jars outlining some suggestions for your guests?

We hope you adore this sweet idea as much as we do! Running out of time to get crafting and creating? Don’t forget we specialise in bespoke wedding favours with many options under $5 per person. We would love to help you! Happy wedding planning!

At first glance, this shoot might look like a traditional elegant reception venue in the heart of Brisbane. Take a closer look, and you will see that it is actually a floating reception location. This new and unique venue which is available for weddings and events is the MV EPICURE offering couples the ultimate wedding reception location, afloat on the Brisbane River. Shell from Hanging Pretty teamed up with Louise from Coco Weddings and Events to create an elegant and sophisticated shoot showcasing this luxurious new venue. Hanging Pretty’s owner and creator of custom prettiness, Shell, explains her concept and process behind the shoot. “As with any wedding, I felt from the start it was important for all the vendors to work within the brief and maintain the overall concept while still having the freedom to express their individual creativity which a shoot allows. Being the Spring edition of Brisbane Wedding Weekly, I was inspired by the 2014 Spring Pantone colours, selecting a palette of blush, coral and pewter shades, which are currently trending in USA and Europe”. Louise worked closely with Shell to plan the vision of the photo shoot and coordinate the vendors throughout the entire process. Louise managed the logistics of the shoot from concept to completion while Shell focused on the details,

styling and creativity. The entire process was a collaborative effort, working with a team of different businesses who love what they do, and are passionate about quality and attention to detail. For a bride and groom this means that they can take their vision to a central person and then relax, knowing that planner can bring the vision to life within the couple’s budget and time frame. Shell worked with Studio 4 Photography who are visual story tellers, their unique photography style ensures they document weddings in a way that is honest to each couple. “Meeting and working with couples before their wedding day ensures we capture memories that are true to you as a couple.” Said Studio 4 Photography. Laura from Cartamodello Paperie custom designed the stationery. Inspired by the baby succulent thank you gifts, Laura created a wrap for the invitation pieces in an agave-inspired laser-cut shape. This resulted in a really beautiful, visually-striking motif that could then be carried from the invitation through to the ceremony and reception pieces. Inside the invitation box, a handmade magnetized paper flower embellishment created by Hanging Pretty was used to compliment the invitation pieces. This magnetic flower would also allow guests something pretty to attach their invite details card to their fridge or notice boards.

The desserts and cake were created by Helen from Baked Cakes and Cupcakery. Drawing on inspiration from the Darb Bridal Couture’s dress, detailing on the cake was hand piped to create contrast against the coral and blush tones of the handmade rice paper flowers. This detailing was also continued onto the cookie design. Paper flower truffle cases were created by Hanging Pretty in coral and blush tones to hold the truffles made by Helen. These were set against a backdrop of larger cream flowers with pops of pewter in the centre. Shell envisioned a glamorous ambience with a modern feel so she chose dÊcor from Adorn Event Hire to suit the location, bringing in touches of pewter to the tables while still keeping the overall feel elegantly stylish and allowing the venue, MV EPICURE and the chosen colour palette to shine.

44

Lauren from Magnolia Lane Floral Designs created elegant centrepieces and bouquets playing on shades of the colour palette. For something unique, Hanging Pretty worked with Magnolia Lane Floral Designs to combine custom handmade and hand coloured fabric paper flowers with the fresh flowers adding a textural element to the bouquets and topiary. Hanging Pretty’s hand crafted and individually coloured fabric flower hair pins were designed to complement the colour palette in soft corals and blush, providing a unique alternative to the flower crown. Shell positioned these hair flowers so that they cascaded down the centre back of the bride’s soft curled side swept hair, aligning with the detailing on the back of the French lace Sapine dress by renowned designer Brad Webb, of Darb Bridal Couture. The magnetised buttonholes were also created by Hanging Pretty and gave a simple though elegant look to the suits from Freddie Met Lilly.

Stephanie’s Luxury Spa Group have been synonymous with beauty for the past 20 years and created a look with their makeup that was perfectly suited to last from day well into the evening. Stephanie’s expert makeup artist, Zarin, created a glamorous look with luscious lashes on both the Bride and Maid of Honour, complimented by warm natural tones on the face and lips, a signature of the Jane Iredale collection. “I personally love the trend of a dress change and with the formalities complete and the sun about to set, what better way to surprise your husband then slipping into this backless and figure hugging black sequin Rebecca Gown from When Freddie Met Lilly,” said Shell. In order to bring a modern take on the photo booth, Hanging Pretty created a one metre wide heart shaped frame adorned with hand painted paper flowers in shades of blush, pink and coral. This would allow guests that chance to mingle and provide a moveable photo booth too.

How did he propose? I'm surprised he went through with it!! The day started a disaster, after his announcement mid morning we were going out for a special lunch and I had to be ready in an hour... Finding something 'nice' to wear and getting ready in less than an hour posed quite a challenge, made even harder when an old friend dropped in to say hello unexpectedly! Then we got lost finding the restaurant – to say I was surprised when we pull up out front of 'The Biggest Loser Retreat’ is an understatement.. Wrong gate - lucky for him! Thank goodness things went much more smoothly once we got inside the restaurant, and had a beautiful lunch overlooking the Gold Coast Hinterland. Afterwards he took me for a walk 'to check out the view' and got down on one knee... We spent the night celebrating with family.

John – The morning I proposed was a bit of a shocker – I was so nervous, then getting lost and almost running out of fuel – thank goodness the food and view were amazing… And she said yes!

Renée – John was super nervous through the whole morning… and although I had the feeling something was going on, I really had no idea until he got down on one knee. It really was a special moment.

On wedding planning? Renée – It’s a lot of hard work and time consuming – but so much fun. We have been so lucky to have such great friends and family to help out and make our day extra special. John – We’ve so many talented friends and family who have really made our planning much easier than I’d expected – we have so many thoughts and ideas, it’s hard to not get caught up in the excitement.

The thing you love most about each other? Renée - I love that John makes me laugh - he makes everyone laugh. He'll do anything for a bit of a laugh and attention. John - I love Renée's genuine nature. She has the kindest, caring heart – she’d do anything to help someone – it makes me feel pretty lucky to have her.

Advice for brides to be? The best advice I got was to enjoy time together on the day, and it couldn’t be more true. The day flies by and is over before you know it, so make sure you treasure it together. Mike and I planned our whole day around this, having our reception end at 3pm we got to spend the whole evening together just the two of us.

Funny moment? The night before the wedding, Mike called me at 11pm saying he couldn’t find his shirt (which he had purchased that day). He ended up scaling the front of my sister’s house to wake up my brother-in-law and retrieve the shirt from his car.

WEDDING PLANNING We had a surprise wedding which made some aspects easier and some harder. We basically organised a big party with a few extras thrown in. We planned it all in about 3 and a half months. Keeping the secret was tricky at times! We had to make a few extra arrangements to make sure nobody was onto us before the announcement was made preceremony. We didn’t have attendants so we didn’t have to deal with all the arrangements that go along with that. We were very lucky as we have a good friend who is a photographer and another friend who is a celebrant so we called on their help, rather at the last minute! Our families were very helpful - it was a real team effort.

WEDDING DAY We spent the night before separately, as is traditional, but we met up in the afternoon and checked into our suite at Emporium together, where we got ready, had some champagne and some photos and took it pretty easy. We went and had a photo session at the Old Museum as we knew we wouldn’t have much time for photos later and we wanted to enjoy the spend as much time as possible with our guests after the ceremony. It was really nice to have that time together and it was really chilled and special. The ‘party’ kicked off just as a normal engagement party would, with lots of drinks and food and chatting with family & friends. The time from the announcement, the ceremony, speeches and dancing afterwards went super fast – but everything went without a hitch and it really was the night of our lives. We pulled it off and everyone had such a great night. 80

Advice for brides to be? Everyone always says it but the day goes so fast. Try and take a moment to soak it all in and just breathe and enjoy. And if you get offers of help for preparation and especially for running around on the day, take them up! The more hands on deck the smoother the day will run and the more likely you are to feel calm and relaxed.

The proposal? It was a spur of the moment, it felt right so I asked. Thankfully (luckily) she said yes! We had been out for dinner at Southbank, it was a beautiful clear night, so we decided to sit down by the waterfront and I made the most of it.

On wedding planning? Given that we are both very busy in our careers and extremely disorganised in general, much of the planning for the wedding was left to the last minute. We relied on recommendations from people we knew for most of our contacts, and we were happy with absolutely everything we chose in the end! The only thing we were adamant about was that we wanted something low key, that was inclusive of the girls. What worked really well for us, was that because we didn’t have any set plans in mind, we were able to say to whomever we were engaging to do work : what do you think is best for this situation? For example, when speaking with Suzie the Florist, I just said I want flowers, that provide colour to our all ivory dresses - she asked me a few basic questions, then she worked her magic with what was in season - and they were truly breathtaking! The big day? Went off without a hitch, mostly! There were only a few minor mistakes during the ceremony - again caused by us being disorganised! The weather was perfect, everything ran on time, and to make it even better, many of the local community members came down to share in the excitement of the day! We invited only our closest friends and family, and wouldn’t change a thing. It was great to have Mia and Lil so heavily involved in the planning, ceremony and reception - it was important to all 4 of us that they be comfortable and involved with everything that happened throughout the entire process. Hosting the reception out the back of our house allowed us the freedom to do exactly what we wanted. We had the brands of drinks we liked, we didn’t have to think about time, and we were able to set up much of the event the night before the wedding - it made for a stress free experience. We did have a back-up plan of moving into the Cafe if required, but thankfully the weather gods were on our side!

The proposal? She says – I knew he was going to ask! I didn’t expect him to be so romantic about it. He got down on one knee and everything. He says – I wish she hadn’t known it was happening but she had known it was coming for quite some time because after I asked for her dad’s blessing, her dad told her mum and her mum told her. So she was pretty much on notice since then and saw the actual proposal coming a mile away. 102

Wedding planning She says – My incredible maid of honour, Katie Tenkate, flew all the way over from Canada with her 4 year old daughter Abigail (my flower girl) to help organise the day with me and our families. There was quite a bit to do as the wedding and reception were held on Jay’s grandparent’s property (John and Val Hearn). Both sets of parents (Debbie & Darryl Arkell and Leanne Harland and Michael Donnelly) and Katie were vital throughout the planning phase. There were also so many wonderful friends who helped by volunteering at the event. There was SO much to do that on the day prior to the wedding I thought we should have just eloped, but I am glad we didn’t – the day was perfect! He says – The hours and hours of effort and organisation were worth it because on the day everything went perfectly. It was such a great day and just flew by.

The big day? She says - It was a perfect day. He says – Noting prepared me for the moment I saw Sarah walking down the aisle looking so beautiful. It was the best day ever. The only thing that I would have wished for is more time to chat with all of our guests.

The proposal? Pat proposed on my 25th birthday. He took me on a surprise weekend away at Surfers Paradise and proposed in the bedroom after coming back from breakfast. He gave me a pair of earrings and a matching necklace then surprised me with the ring in the last box.

Funny moment?

The best man leaving the rings in the limo. We were on our way to the ceremony and the girls found the bag with the rings in it and thought that Pat had left me a present. Nope, it was the rings – the poor best man was most definitely panicking and the girls made him sweat for it!

On wedding planning? Hannah - Everybody makes jokes that it’s all the bride in the planning but I really wanted Pat’s opinion on everything – it was his day too! It also made it so much easier because if I was stuck on something he would make a suggestion and it would be perfect. Patrick - We were both surprised at how easy we got through it. We had heard stories from friends saying that it will make or break you – but we agreed on just about everything & had the same ideas in mind.
