hello summer lovin’ It’s summer here in Brisbane! This means it’s time to trade in a fake tan for a real one, don’t forget the umbrella and here’s to a humid Christmas Day! Since the launch of our first edition, the Brisbane Wedding Weekly community has grown to be one I am very proud of. I can’t thank you enough for your support, both brides and vendors alike. Thank you for sumitting your photos and sharing your valued advice, and allowing us to share it with other bridesto-be! I am looking forward to all that 2014 has to hold for Brisbane Wedding Weekly, and I hope you are looking forward to taking the journey with us. It is a very exciting time to be a bride (and wedding vendor) in Brisbane as the wedding industry grows and evolves. This issue gives you a taste of what is to come in the new year with many new and exciting wedding fairs to explore your wedding day options at. How did you get involved in the wedding industry? Ever since my fiancĂŠ proposed to me in January 2012, I have simply fallen in love with all things weddings. Once my own wedding planning begun, I was overwhelmed by the beauty and creativity that this industry exuded, and I just knew I had to be a part of it. Working with Brides, Grooms, and wedding industry professionals has been the most positive experience of my career. What services can you offer a bride and groom planning their wedding? Currently I design wedding stationery exclusively for Bespoke Letterpress. As well as this I am also a freelance graphic designer and illustrator and can offer wedding couples unique design solutions which reflect them on their special day. This can be anything from Chalk Board design, to hand painted signage, custom hand lettering and illustrations.

Describe your style for us? I would describe my own style as feminine, organic, illustrative and modern. However I am passionate about working closely with each individual client to meet their brief and achieve exactly the look which suits them, weather it be for a bride and groom on their wedding day, or branding for a wedding industry professional. Tell us a little about your recent wedding? We were recently married in May 2013 on Hamilton Island, in the Whitsundays. We chose this location as we wished for ourselves and our 48 guests to enjoy 4 days of island holiday bliss, and celebrate in complete fun and relaxation. Our ceremony and reception were held within the Hamilton Island Yacht club, and for our photos we arranged for a helicopter from Hamilton Island to Whitehaven Beach after our ceremony. To make it even more special, when we arrived we had the entire 6km of pure white sandy beach to ourselves. It was the most amazing experience, on the most beautiful day.

Macaroons or Cupcakes? Macaroons Veil or flower crown? I love flower crowns, however for me its a veil :) Favourite Brisbane wedding venue? I love water to be the backdrop! So Powerhouse, or GOMA. Advice for brides-to-be? Stay true to you and your partners style, and include little elements that reflect your life and personality. Try not to follow trends too much, as when you look back on your wedding day you want it to truly reflect you both. Also, All the work you put in for your amazing day is truly worth it! Try to have yourself as organised as possible, and if you don't have a wedding co-ordinator, don't be afraid to ask your friends and family to help out with little tasks. Whatever can make your day as stress-free and relaxing as possible. The more relaxed you are, the more you will be able to stop, and breathe, and take in every moment on the day! Oh, and invest in an amazing photographer! Its totally worth it!

STEP 1 Neatly part your hair down the middle. Section your hair into 3 sections. 2 front sections from part to ear approximately 3 inches wide. Clip into place. STEP 3 Leaving your front sectioned off hair, take about 2 inches of hair from either side of your head. Bring together and form a pony tail at the back of the head. 16

STEP 2 With the large left over section, take some hair from the crown and tease to add a little volume. Brush over and smooth out for clean styling. STEP 4 Make a part in the middle of the hair above the pony tail and slip the pony tail through the part.

Chignons can vary greatly depending on the occasion and hair type. The look can be achieved so easily with a little practice and determination! The style we have created for Kate is a relaxed version of the chignon. It's a fun look that can be changed from casual to formal. We have parted Kate's hair down the middle for a day look but this can be easily changed when styling. 5

STEP 5 To add some volume to this look and to create faux padding, you will then tease the ponytail from the hair tie to the end. It will look a little crazy at first but it will make sense for your next step!

STEP 6 Tie the left over hair as close to your ends as possible. This will help with keeping the hair together.

STEP 7 To create the bun, bring the remaining pony tail up and loop through the pony tail you created earlier. When doing this ensure that the teased section is completely covered.

STEP 8 Keep pulling hair into the loop until the hair has taken a bun form. Pin hair into place. You will then need to spread out the bun to cover the open ends, then pin into place.

We are almost done! STEP 9 With the hair that you sectioned off in the beginning, taking one side at a time, wrap the hair over the bun where the bun meets the head. Pin into place. You will repeat this step for the opposite side. This covers any messy hairs and adds a lovely touch to the overall look. You can also braid the remaining hair to make this look a little more casual. Finish with a finishing spray to smooth out any fly always. Add your favourite clip or a wreath of flowers over the bun for a soft and flirty look. Skin and Eye Prep and Brows Prep the skin with a primer and the eyes with a shadow magnet. Use a fibre - optic brush to apply liquid foundation from the t-zone outwards. Conceal where necessary. Don’t forget about the area under your chin - it’s the whitest part and needs to match in colour.

Eye shadow and brows Pat an orange or mandarin colour all over the lid starting from the middle. Use a blending brush to soften the edges. Take a flat brush and using dark brown or black apply the powder as close to the lash line as possible- when your eyes are open continue this line to the inner corner. Looking up and to the sides makes this easier. Look up and create a thin line along your bottom lashes- soften with a cotton bud. Curl your lashes Blush and Highlighter and lift your eyes by applying lots of black mascara Using a soft guava colour sweep this along the to the top lashes only. apples and the check bone - Don’t smile when putting blush on as when your face is relaxed your blush will be too low. Sweep a highlighter on the cheek bones stopping before you get to the apples.

Apply mascara with a mini mascara wand to ensure that you reach the base of the lashes.

Lips Finish off with a lovely soft pink gloss colour on the lips for that soft pouty lip look. If you would like your lips to look fuller use a contour colour just under the middle of the bottom lip and a highlighter on the peak of your upper lip.

The Lovelocked Couple: Alicia & Andrew Lucky couple, Alicia and Andrew, have won the chance of a lifetime - to get remarried, with all the bells and whistles, for free. BWW Please tell us your story. Why did you enter the Lovelocked Couple Search? A&A We originally planned to get married in the USA (where we were living at the time while Andrew was racing NASCAR), but those wedding plans got changed as we were expecting a baby!! Big surprise as I was told it would take us quite a while to fall pregnant naturally (if at all), so we started trying a few months before the wedding certainly not expecting to get blessed with a pregnancy so soon. So, when I saw the chance to re-do our wedding I jumped at the chance to relive our special day and wear the wedding gown I had always imagined myself in! I was 28 weeks pregnant at our wedding, which was a little exhausting but still loads of fun. Plus who doesn’t love any reason to get all dolled up? BWW What aspect of getting ‘re-married’ are you each most excited about? A&A Getting to wear a ‘proper’ wedding gown! And get some beautiful photos taken of the three of us. We rarely seem to get shots of us altogether. I’m (Andrew) excited to be able to use this opportunity as a chance to celebrate our achievements as a couple and reflect on our time since we have been married. With a young family it’s not always easy to just stop everything and take it all in, it’s going to be a great opportunity to be there in front of each other and be able to show how much love we have and how strongly we have grown together. I’m

excited to remind her that I still look at her with as much starry eyed goofy excitement as when we first met. BWW Who are you inviting to celebrate in this day with you? A&A We will be inviting our immediate family and a few close friends, who have been our biggest support network since starting a family. It’ll be a nice way to celebrate our first few years as a family and thank them for all their love and support. BWW When planning your wedding previously, what do you think was the hardest aspect/part eg: finding a venue? A&A We are very relaxed people, so completely under-estimated how early you needed to book venues, celebrants, cars, a band, photographer.. especially for a Spring wedding! We thought 2 months before was extremely eager, but we were wrong. If you have a dream venue in mind, definitely book it as early as possible. BWW What advice can you give to brides and grooms? A&A Relax! Don’t focus on the small details on the big day. Focus on the whole reason for the day… to marry your soul mate! Have in the back of your mind that if absolutely everything goes wrong, as long as you get to say your vowels and exchange rings then you had a brilliant day.

The proposal Alicia loves Christmas. Decorations, costumes, pictures, food, Frank Sinatra singing classic carols – Alicia loves it all. It starts in about early November… I proposed to Alicia in front of our Christmas tree on Christmas morning. It was the perfect scenario – non weather dependant, I knew Alicia would love it, we could visit all family in the same day to break the news and our ‘proposal place’ is portable. Every year we can put up the same tree no matter where in the world we live and we can re live that moment for a few months each year. I never actually had the opportunity to propose though. I began by mumbling incomprehensible words because I was so nervous and then managed to say something along the lines of “I got you a present I …” to which she screamed mid sentence “Yay, a puppy!”. Not exactly. I needed to get things back on track so got down on the knee and asked “Alicia will you…” Cut off again by an even louder scream of “Yes, yes yes!” And that was it, we were engaged.

First date After we met we were pretty much inseparable. It’s hard to say what our first date was because once we connected we didn’t really leave each others side for a few weeks! I was going back to America 2 weeks after we met (as I was living there and only home for a visit). We made the most of our time as we weren’t sure when we would see each other again. It was like 2 weeks of movies, dinners, breakfasts, lunches and laughing at each others stupid jokes that nobody else got until we met each other.

MOST LOVED That he knows what I’m thinking 99% of the time without having to say anything. And he makes me laugh everyday and we can talk and talk for hours without realising. Plus he is an amazing father and completely selfless. He always puts us first as well.

Jennifer Gifford BWW How long have you been in the wedding industry for? What is your background in? JG I started in the industry about 11 years ago as a machinist for Kym Scott Couture. I really fell in to this job as I really wanted to work in Musical theatre BWW What can we expect from Jennifer Gifford making costumes. Designs in the coming year, 2014? BWW As Brisbane wedding industry royalty, can you share an insight to what your own wedding day was like? Location, styling, did you wear one of your own dresses?

JG Wow we have a very interesting year ahead, JGD will be slowing down on the Custom couture orders and focussing a lot more of Off the Rack Collections that will be stocked in The Bride’s Market.

JG Scott and I married five years ago on the 8/8/8 in the City Botanical Gardens. We had a very simple ceremony and included my daughter Neve who was 10 at the time it was very special. I wore a beautiful Blush coloured duchess silk sating gown with a stunning Chantilly lace overlay and ruched bodice. I designed my gown and the lovely people I was working for at the time created it for me.

BWW Do you have a favourite dress of all your designs? JG This is like trying to pick a favourite child, I love the Alea floral gown and I am hoping to bring her into full production for 2014. She is really for the daring Bride who’s looking for that statement gown with a traditional silhouette.

BWW Talk us through a typical day in the life of BWW What advice can you give brides-to-be on Jennifer Gifford? choosing their dress? JG Generally I am up early, sometimes very early to answer emails and assess what needs to be done for the day. Then it’s usual Mum stuff making sure the kids are ready for School and Day care then

JG Trust your gut! Go and try on gowns in a variety of styles and colours. Take a trusted friend or family member with you to your first couple of appointments, try not to bring every girlfriend and family member as it can become very confusing having so many opinions. The only opinion that counts is Yours! Be realistic with your budget it’s really important to have a clear maximum set out and make sure you tell the bridal attendant when you start trying gowns on. If you still can’t find “the one” perhaps you need to get one made, this is not always the cheaper option though especially if you are employing a Designer not just a Dressmaker.

We often get asked by our brides to provide ideas for unique wedding favours. Today we have the pleasure of sharing with you a DIY favour that weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve created. We promise these yummy gifts will look oh-so-sweet on your wedding tables! We are slightly obsessed with mini jars of late, so this is the perfect vessel for our favours. These little Hot Cocoa in a Jar look so adorable, we can guarantee you that your guests will be delighted to receive them.

The mini glass jars were purchased from a thrift store, and you can get all the ingredients to go inside from your local grocery shop! Here’s what you need: • Little glass jars • Hot Chocolate mix (we used Cadbury’s) • White chocolate chips • Dark chocolate chips • Mini marshmallows Simply start by layering the hot chocolate powder in the base of the jars. We used a long, narrow spoon for ease. Sprinkle white chocolate chips, followed by dark chocolate chips over the top. Finish with a layer of mini marshmallows. Voilà! Did we mention how easy this was?

Now for the fun part – decorating! We sourced some pretty pastel ribbon, natural twine and gorgeous printed paper, along with some bamboo teaspoons (available online). Our styling tip: use mismatched stationary prints to compliment your wedding colour palette. We carefully ran some glue tape along the handle of the spoon and then stuck the spoon face down on the pretty paper. We used a Stanley knife to trim around the edges and then secured the teaspoons to the side of the jars, using the ribbon.

Last but not least, we designed bespoke gift tags, which we attached to the side of the jars using natural twine. These could double as place cards, by labelling each tag with your guest’s name – saving you even more money, without compromising on charm! There you have it - one very-cute bespoke wedding favour idea that tastes (almost) as good as it looks and costs just under $4 per person (for 100 guests).

I'll Just Wear Jeans Two months out from my wedding day I was convinced I would have to wear jeans and converse down the aisle. And I was okay with it. After all I had tried on over 50 dresses, which, taking an average of 10 minutes to get into and out of each, meant I had spent 8.3 hours of my life in dresses that weren't 'the one'. But let's go back to the start. I was freshly engaged, had set the wedding date for four months away and floated naively into my first bridal store. I was positive I could find the perfect dress for $500 and be able to spend the leftover on the photographer. I knew exactly what I wanted: lace, sleeves, no train and a simple A-line. All the dresses in that store were strapless, heavy satin and all of them had long trains. Undeterred I enlisted my best friend and maid of honour to accompany me to every wedding strip, hub and district we could find. There was the store where every dress was half a metre too short for me. One store only sold size 14's and up because "real women are not size 10's like you". Another store pretty much had us put hazmat suits on in order to keep the dresses pristine. And then there were the stores that had dresses so beautifully expensive my entire wedding budget could not have afforded them. What I noticed most in our unrewarding search 34

was the occasional judgments and assumptions made about us as we walked through the door, even before an assistant had the chance to say hello. You see we are both 21. For some reason this translates as "two silly girls have borrowed their mum's ring and are playing dress ups for fun". Either that or the fact I am walking in telling them my wedding is in two months convinces them it is a shotgun wedding. I stood on a podium in front of a mirror in one store, squeezed into my fourth strapless mermaid dress for the visit, (note again my previously stated dress preferences) and knew the dress I was in, whilst beautiful, was still not right for me. Despite this my maid of honour and two assistants loved it. The heavily pregnant assistant then came up to me and mentioned that she got married two weeks earlier and wore a similar style that completely flattened her belly and that I would have no trouble hiding mine. I'm not sure if I was more shocked that she thought I was pregnant when my stomach is slim and babyfree or the fact that she had squashed her baby into a wedding dress. Eventually I was two months from the big day, dress-less, and tired of shopping. My mum came to visit me and we sat down to assess what I wanted in a wedding dress. It was then that I realised my dress wasn't going to be hidden between the sequins and ruffles of the dress shops I had been visiting. I had to change my strategy. We planned

a two-day shopping tour of designer women's clothing stores with a few boutiques thrown in. These dresses weren't the traditional wedding dress but they were long, white, simple and exactly what I was looking for. My mum and I started and within an hour of shopping I had a short list of three dresses that I absolutely loved. This experience was completely different to my previous experiences. I could walk around the store by myself, and without having to take my shoes off first. I could get into the dresses with no assistance in the change rooms. And not once was pregnancy alluded to. And then it happened. The dress. The moment. The one.

I've heard people say mums forget labour pains as soon as they see their baby's face. And then they want to go through pregnancy all again. Having found my wedding dress made me forget all the agony of searching for it. Even to the point that when a colleague's friend got engaged I squealed with excitement about her getting to go dress shopping. But then I remembered the truth about wedding dress shopping. It wasn't all champagne and girlfriends and getting it right first time. My advice for her was to be realistic, think about what dress you are after and shop in shops that would sell that dress. But most of all have fun and enjoy it no matter how stressful it gets! I couldn't say much about sticking to budgets though...

After a medium cheeseburger meal with sweet and sour sauce (I clearly had a great wedding diet) we decided that it didn't matter that it was three times the amount of my dress budget. Charé + MATT How did he propose? Matt had me believe that we were meeting a few of our friends for his birthday dinner (as it was his birthday the week before). We were along the river at Kangaroo Point at dusk and Matt led me down a candle-lined jetty where a string trio began playing my favourite song, “La Vie En Rose”, while Matt sung to me and twirled me around before getting down on one knee and asking me to be his wife! We enjoyed wine and cheese at the end of the jetty while the string trio continued to play to us. Matt then blindfolded me and took me to a surprise proposal party with 25 of our favourite people. I have never seen or heard of anyone else being romanced and loved as much I have been by Matt. Do you have a theme for your wedding in mind? What about colours? Think classic, rustic and homey all in one. It’s an autumn wedding so we won’t be going too bright a palette for colours. Where will you be looking for your wedding dress? Online wedding dress shopping isn’t as bad as I imagined it would be, particularly as I’ve done the majority of my clothing shopping on the Internet for the past few years. I’m not actually intending on making an online wedding dress purchase (not that game), however screen-shopping has given me a chance to pick out looks and features of dresses I like before trying them on. Some of my favourite dresses so far have been from Jenny Packham and Rosa Clara. Honeymoon Ideas? We have a few ideas in mind, but Matt has recently decided to surprise me with the destination! I trust him completely and can’t wait to find out where he takes me! Who was your photographer? Brooke Adams – if you’re looking for a photographer, she is your girl! She’s a friend from a while back, but was so professional and captured moments you couldn’t dream of creating yourself.

JUANITA + JAKE How did he propose? Jake proposed a day after my 25th birthday. We had gone swimming with the Dolphins at Sea World and then checked in to Versace. I had no idea what was going on it was all very much a shock. Do you have a theme for your wedding in mind? What about colours? We are thinking Neutral and then popping it with really bright and colourful Flowers . Where will you be looking for your wedding dress? Vanessa from When Freddie Met Lilly will be creating my Gown . Dream Brisbane wedding location? Ceremony – St John’s Cathedral. Reception – Any where in Brisbane CBD - I love the city. We are getting married in a venue called Wesley House at Level 9, 140 Ann Street. It’s a space managed by Main Event Weddings – our wedding planner. Honeymoon Ideas? We are thinking a road trip to the Hunter Valley First date? Bride: we had a fantastic night out at Southbank Groom: They served me a whole fish! The thing you love most about each other? BRIDE ON THE DAY My favourite part was the ceremony. Walking down the isle with my Dad and into franks arms with our friends and family witnessing was the most unforgettable moment of it all. I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t help but have tears in my eyes and saying our vows to one another was special to us as we had written them together. There is something powerful in making a public declaration to one another.

GROOM ON THE DAY This was honestly the happiest day ever. From start to finish was more than what I could ever imagine. Nothing beats marrying your best friend and then celebrating with friends and family. Make sure you take your time, let it all sink in and just enjoy whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s around you. Oh and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget to practice smiling for hours because your cheeks will start to get sore! 56

ON WEDDING PLANNING Appreciate the people who help you and give up so much to make your day happen, it was the best 5 months ever! I think having a short engagement made it more fun as we had no time to get over the planning part of it all. It was so much fun creating our own themes and traditions.

FUNNY MOMENT First slow dance we ever had together was in the middle of the night under the moon and the stars in an abandoned car park by the lake to John Legend â&#x20AC;&#x153;Stay With youâ&#x20AC;? Our first romantic moment together. This was also the first time we got caught by the police and interrupted by flashing lights and sirens asking us to move on!

THE PROPOSAL At the Mouses House, Gold Coast Hinterland. We were off to get chocolate fudge and Will asked me to grab his shoes. I grabbed his shoes and gave them to him and he asked me to look in the shoes for the keys. I found this odd and told him he could look for the keys now he had the shoes. He kept on about the keys and I was very confused and when I turned around he was stuttering and on one knee. Very surreal.

GROOM’S PROPOSAL I wanted the proposal to be a surprise and something that would always have extra meaning. Camping at Dicky Beach has been a tradition for Kelly’s family for many years that I had recently started joining in on. Even though it didn’t include a fancy restaurant or coincide with a large event, it has been an important place for her for many years and I hope it will now be an important place for us into the future. 86

BRIDE ON THE DAY The day went by in a flash. I went into the day feeling very excited. As the dress went on I started getting emotional. I felt really nervous before walking down the aisle. Seeing Lachlanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s face at the end of the aisle put me at ease. After the church ceremony it was a lot more relaxing with our photos in and around Ipswich. I loved our ceremony the food was amazing, the speeches were great, crazy booth was so much fun and the music was fantastic. Overall a fantastic day!!

MOST LOVED GROOM It seems cliché but I don’t look at Kelly as a group of different actions that I love on a sliding scale. There are things she does that we have in common and things we don’t. The important thing to me is that we work as a couple and I love her. BRIDE There are lots of things I love about Lachlan. I found it really hard to just name a few things but here goes. I love how he can always make me smile. How he will always make sure that I am comfortable at any event we might be at. I also love how we have things in common and doing things together. I love him and really am enjoying being his wife and am looking forward to enjoying the next chapter of our lives together.

BRIDES ADVICE My advices is start with the bigticket items like venue, wedding dress and photographer and go from there. I would also advise to go to as many local wedding expos as possible. Never be afraid to ask your vendors for advice on local suppliers. I asked many of my vendors about different suppliers for things. Also try and go for local vendors if possible, from our wedding day experience I found that it helped us. Keep a wedding book where you record all your vendors in it, we found it incredibly useful to contact these companies as the date drew closer.
