Hi Lovelies! Welcome to our Winter Issue of Brisbane Wedding Weekly. We canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe this is our 4th Issue already! Where has the last year gone?! We have been overwhelmed by the response we have received to BWW in the last year. It is more than we could ever have hoped for and we would just like to thank not only the vendors who advertise with us and create amazing styled shoots out of our hair brained ideas, but more importantly, you lovely people, our readers. Our community is a thing of beauty. We are so thankful for your support of us and especially your support of each other.

In this issue, you will not only find styled shoots (which we love), but also tonnes of advice and heaps of real weddings for you to draw inspiration from. Ultimately though, your wedding day is about love, the love shared between you and your beau. So when everything is stressing you out and nothing seems to be going your way, just remember this: if you get to midnight and you are married to the love of your life, nothing else really matters. Love is whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important. We will be making some changes to the blog and magazine before the next edition and hopefully getting our new venture off the ground very soon. WI NTE R WED D IN G LO O K In recent years winter weddings are becoming more and more common. In fact, it’s a great time to have a ceremony. Because the wedding industry somewhat considers winter the off-season you won’t be competing for the attention of wedding providers. Your guests will also appreciate attending this time of year as it is suit wearing weather compared to a hot Queensland summer or the wedding gauntlet in spring months. If this sounds like something you are considering, we’ve provided some basic trends for you to consider when planning your day. THE BASICS Winter weddings are often associated with a more opulent feel than their warmer seasonal counterparts. Simple but bold colour combinations are the easiest way

to make a statement. However, the classic combination of black suit, white shirt and white or silver tie will always work.

If you want to get away from this classic look try smoky and steely versions of greys, navy, and royal blues. A simple white shirt and white boutonniere with just a little greenery around it looks great on a groom, especially against a landscaped backdrop. However, stay away from white suits during the winter months. If you want to add a little texture, plaids and pinstripes are the best choices. Placing the groom in a three piece suit can add to the formality of the ceremony. Also, if the groom is in danger of finding himself chilly when the sun goes down, adding a vest will give him an extra layer of warmth while adding a touch of style. Dinner suits/Tuxedos are also popular these

Of course, no one says that you have to stay within the traditional boundaries for your winter wedding. If you want to give your guests an unexpected jolt, you could consider deep purples and reds. In this case, you probably still want to keep the groom in a white shirt and use his boutonniere and tie to coordinate colours. Many bride and grooms may be surprised at the array of choices out there. A Wedding Review

FOOD

Louise and Don wanted to create the feel of a sophisticated dinner party with great food and wine and all our family and friends together in an intimate space, so were looking for exclusive use of a Brisbane CBD restaurant – Fix Restaurant ticked all those boxes. We started with a food, drinks and minimal styling package and this was customised to suit us. Fix were very accommodating and flexible. We tinkered with the menu, adapted and added to the styling (with the guidance of MEW, the Butterfly Lounge and Styled Events), brought in wine of preference - the staff spared nothing to ensure that all of our guests (165!) were comfortable. They basically allowed us to take over the Hotel for the evening and were so great throughout the planning process and were fantastic on the night. 12

The food was superb and we had lots of very positive feedback from our guests. There were cocktails and canapés upstairs (where Fix allowed us to have exclusive use of their bar/lounge – not an easy thing to do on a Friday in the city), starters on the table in the restaurant when guests were seated, alternate options for entrée and main meal, several options of cake served as dessert and then mini desserts/petit fours and cheese platters served later in the evening. We both love eating out (my family says the best thing I make is a dinner reservation!) and were very pleased with food, including service, quantity and quality. We also had quite a number of guests with dietary requirements and this was no trouble for them.

AMBIANCE We were after a sophisticated city restaurant with a classic elegant feel and Fix matched that brief perfectly. The dark timber and low lighting, with classic and refined styling by Main Event Weddings, gave the space a very cool yet classy vibe. With the dance floor really kicking into gear later in the evening, in such close proximity to the bar and the option of booths close by, guests were able to either get amongst the fun or be close to it. We both love the photo taken of the bottles of McNicol wine (purchased by the Best Man and Groomsman from Fix on the night!) standing under the lamp at one of the booths, it sums up the ambience at Fix perfectly – cool, classy, tailored to the couple and high-quality.

VALUE FOR MONEY

Fix were most accommodating in allowing us to bring in wine that is produced by a dear friend of Don’s (Craggy Range Wines). Don has a love for good wine and sharing it with family and friends, so it was very important that the venue we chose was flexible enough to allow this to happen. One of the unique features at Fix is the proximity of the bar area to where the guests are seated, so you can have both table service (during speeches and meals) and bar service. A regular comment from the “non-dancing guests” was that they still felt a part of the celebrations as the evening went on, as they were able to stand at the bar and enjoy their drinks and still be in and amongst the fun. We were able to customize the drinks package to also include service of Louise’s favourite cocktail (French Martini) at canapés.

We felt like Fix went that extra mile for us both before and on the day. Lee (Restaurant Manager) and Cassie (our consultant) spent many hours measuring and stepping out the layout of the room to ensure we would have the best set up on the day and make our 165 guests feel welcome and comfortable (and to fit a dance floor and a 6 piece band!).

We needed to meet a minimum spend to be granted exclusive use of the Liber Lounge and Fix Restaurant itself, but with out guests numbers, that was not difficult. The packages are Fix are well-priced and offer great value and their ability to work in with our needs/ customise our package meant we were very pleased with them overall.

On the day, the waitstaff were attentive and helpful. We ran a little over time with some of the formalities and the kitchen was able to work in this and still ensure that the meal service was exceptional. The bridal party was taken extra special care of in the Wine Room before our entry and throughout the evening.

WHAT THE HECK!

We often hear brides tell us that they don’t want a vintage wedding, or they don’t like vintage styling. Then they tell us they want a Gatsby theme or a garden picnic. We all seem a little confused about what the heck vintage actually is... What defines a wedding as vintage? If you think you know what a vintage wedding looks like, you might be surprised! As a wedding stylist specialising in vintage, I’ve planned vintage weddings in a variety of styles. One of the things I love best about styling vintage weddings is that no two are ever the same. As far as I’m concerned there is no ‘typical’ vintage wedding! I love that the vintage style seems to open brides and grooms up to doing things differently and in ways that make their day unique and special to only them. Vintage weddings are often sentimental, fun, relaxed events, which guests often tell us are the best!

So what the heck is vintage? As a self-professed lover of all things vintage, every now and again I find people ask me “So what the heck is vintage?” This is actually not so easy to answer. These days the term vintage is a much generalised word for anything old and you’ll see it applied to things like clothing, wine, motor vehicles and of course furniture & décor! Typically items from the eras between the 1970’s – 1990’s are considered retro. Those produced before the late 1960’s are vintage whereas a more specific definition exists for any pieces over 100 years old which would be classed as antique.

Vintage Wedding Styles Think you don’t like vintage? Perhaps it’s not so much vintage itself that you don’t like but a certain style of vintage. Have you ever thought about the history of crystal chandeliers or tiffany chairs? You might be surprised to discover that both originated in the 1800’s or earlier. Let’s take a look at some of the current vintage wedding styles starting with the most well-known and the style you probably think of when you think ‘vintage wedding’.

SHABBY CHIC A popular style chosen for many vintage weddings, shabby chic furniture & décor pieces are chosen for their lovingly worn or aged appearance. New furniture is often painted white or pastel colours then distressed to give the appearance of age. Shabby chic furniture items have a time-worn appearance and may show the many layers of paint that have been applied over the years. Cottage style décor elements such as bunting, lace, pearls and hessian are often used. You’ll find lots of details at a shabby chic wedding. Think drink dispensers with Mason jars used as glasses and tied with hessian, lace and ribbon bands. Floral prints, grain sacks and stationery tied with twine. Rusty metal, peeling or chippy paint and frilly cushions fit perfectly. Wheelbarrows and claw foot baths might be filled with ice and drinks. Frequently held outdoors, in barns or community halls, many people find shabby chic styled weddings to be more relaxed and welcoming than a traditional wedding. Picnic weddings are also gaining in popularity and often fit the shabby chic style perfectly!

VINTAGE INDUSTRIAL Often held in fantastic warehouse spaces, vintage industrial styled weddings are the epitome of cool! Furniture and décor pieces will be predominately made from metal and beautiful timbers. You’ll recognise industrial pieces such as workbenches repurposed as tables, milk crates transformed into stools or wooden cable reels as display stands or tables. Giant metal or timber letters illuminated with fairy lights are a popular element of this style. Lighting such as festoons or pendants fitted with round Edison bulbs are frequently seen too. Picture chunky rustic timber furniture, bold signage and clean lines. Floors are often left bare and unadorned. Almost the opposite of shabby chic, the industrial look is clean, crisp and quite masculine. ECLECTIC Love everything about vintage and prefer not to stick to one style? Are you in love with rusty metal and chandeliers as well as rustic timber? An eclectic wedding might feature antique lounges alongside vintage trunks as coffee tables, a chandelier over a rustic dance floor or synthetic grass table runners dripping with flowers and your personal collection of vintage bits and bobs. It might mean mismatched chairs, with polished tables or tiffany chairs with rustic trestle tables. You might like bunting or you may not! The wonderful thing about this modern interpretation of vintage means that your wedding can be almost anything you’d like it to be! Remember there are no rules when it comes to deciding what is beautiful. A talented stylist will be able to meld these different elements to create a beautiful look which is uniquely your own. VINTAGE LUX Love crystal, polish and light? Then vintage lux might be the look for you. My absolute favourite style of vintage, this look encompasses everything sparkling and beautiful! You’ll often find a mix of eras in a glamorous vintage wedding with pieces like modern chevron rugs and table runners, sequin tablecloths and fairy lights combining beautifully with antique lounges, gold tiffany chairs and chandeliers. Guest seating charts and welcome signs printed on ornate gold framed mirrors are often a feature. You won’t find shabby pieces at these elegant shindigs, instead beautifully polished and maintained timber, gorgeous velvets and lashings of gold or silver will feature in centrepieces and furnishings.

ERA SPECIFIC Are you in love with the 1950’s and rock and roll? What about a 1920’s Great Gatsby or Speakeasy theme? Whether you love the 1940s or the mod look of the 60’s or another period, any of these amazing moments in time can be recreated here in the 21st century! A few distinctive elements will set you on the way to your era specific wedding. For example at your 1920’s wedding you’d use bentwood chairs, standard lamps and art deco furniture. At a 50’s wedding you’d include lots of chrome and Eames or Parker style furniture. Throw in a jukebox and you’re off and racing! A little searching will find

THEMED VINTAGE Is your fiancée a fan of aeroplanes or fishing? Do you love books, the ocean or travel? Whatever your passion it can be the key to styling your vintage wedding! A nautical themed wedding could contain elements of natural rope, glass fishing floats and old fishing nets as table overlays. Your guest gift could be personalised compasses - to help them find their way in love of course! Speak to your stylist about incorporating things you love into your wedding! BOHO CHIC Influence by bohemian and hippie culture of the 1960’s and 70’s the Boho style has gained in popularity particularly for beach weddings. The modern take on this look includes peacock chairs, lace tents and twig arbours. Brides often wear slimline lace gowns and bare feet. Styling is kept to a minimum and predominately white and very natural, making a feature of simple flowers arranged in a loose handpicked style. Feathers, stools made from tree stumps, and lanterns are a popular choice. Rugs, floor cushions and low tables are a common choice for receptions and furnishings are eclectic and mostly timber or white. Try Bundaleer Rainforest Gardens, or Walkabout Creek

MOROCCAN You might think it strange that I include the Moroccan theme in a story of vintage wedding styles. In fact they fit perfectly. The elements of Moroccan styling date back hundreds of years and whilst you might be using modern reproductions of these pieces they very much honour their vintage ancestors! Typically hosted in a marquee or tent lined with beautiful fabric, your styling begins with Persian rugs, tufted ottomans and floor cushions. Brass is often used for trays, table tops and vases. Bold, vivid colour is a wonderful feature of Moroccan style weddings. Guest may laze on upholstered chaises or divans and sit at low tables under the light of stunning coloured glass Arabian style lanterns. Create your Moroccan look with a tent from: Katalane or Nomadic Tents

SO WHAT’S YOUR VINTAGE STYLE? Are you a glamorous bride? Do you prefer rustic, shabby pieces? Or are you a couple that likes to mix things up? Whatever you choose never let anyone tell you that pieces don’t mix! Yes, you can have origami cranes with Art Deco lounges. You can have neon lighting with lace and hessian. It’s all about taking chances, blending things well and not being afraid of doing things differently. A careful eye for detail and some trial and error before the big day will ensure you have a wedding like no other. RENEE + ANDY The proposal? HE| Originally I had this elaborate plan to take her back to where we met the first time and take a walk along the same path we took on our first date together along the Brisbane River... But, unfortunately she had been quite ill and it didn’t look like she would be back to being 100% by the time I had planned to propose. I knew she would say yes and in my heart I always wanted to make her feel like a princess and do something special, so I was in doubt whether I should propose then or not, but I couldn’t wait any longer! With her mum and sisters help I arranged for candles to cover the deck in the backyard in the shape of a love heart and I placed a rose in the middle and I proposed right there, in her parents backyard and my baby in her PJs (PS: if anyone is considering using candles outdoors make sure you have something protecting the flame - Even the slightest breeze kept blowing them out!) On wedding planning SHE| Let’s just say thank goodness we’ll only get married once! I’ve heard of how stressful it can be but I really wasn’t prepared for the mammoth task that is wedding planning! There have been a few bumps and hiccups along the way but I guess you’ve got to learn to focus on what’s important and that is marrying the man I love. HE| As a guy, I was completely oblivious and didn’t realise that this is what girls plan their whole lives, so it soon became apparent that I needed to step back and let Renee pick a few things for our wedding... I did get the responsibility of organising the honeymoon which was pretty fun and I did get to give my “opinion” with a few things like the venue, the decorations and invites etc. I have to say though that I am so proud of her for all the work she’s put in and all her effort. I have tried to help and minimise her stress levels by doing what I can... which sometimes has been to not do anything and let her run the show! Photography: Special Memories Photography

ELISE + EMRYS The thing you love most about each other? SHE| His passion and drive for life.... and terrible dad jokes HE| Her sense of humour and her eyes The proposal? SHE| I remember sitting on the beach, wind blowing sand in my face, I was cold and hungry and he just wanted to relax and enjoy the sunset. I swung myself onto my feet to move away from the wind. I turned back around to face him and in his outstretched hand was this little white box with a ring propped inside. I gasped and I sat back down and said yes immediately. I don’t even remember him asking me a question! HE| I had been planning all day to ask her and we went to my first choice proposal location, which was the Byron Bay lighthouse, but there were far too many people, so the second choice was Tallow beach, which worked out much better. I had been carrying the ring in our beach bag all day, I’m so lucky she didn’t see it! Once we were at the beach, I waited for everyone to leave, and just as the sun was setting, she stood up and I saw the perfect opportunity to ask her. On wedding planning? SHE| I keep saying to people that I’m ‘missing the bride gene’ because all I want is simplicity for the wedding. In fact Emry’s is happy to be involved with the creative side as much as I am. The proposal? It had been a busy few weeks and I had no idea that Callum was planning to propose to me that day, all I knew was that we were going on a day trip. Cal had put together a picnic and we parked at a place near Binna Burra and walked to the base of a waterfall where he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. 64

On wedding planning? It was difficult as both of us were finishing university for the year. After chopping and changing ideas finally we came to the decision to have a marquee farm wedding. Slowly our plans on paper became a reality. My mum was an amazing help doing a lot of the practical things necessary to pull it off on the day. We looked at quite a number of wedding venues but nowhere felt like us. So we decided on an outdoor DIY wedding and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m so glad we did. It was a lot of extra work but it was well worth it because it meant that every little detail meant so much more to us. 66

The big day? Groom: One word. Hot. Both Sara and the day. It was one of the hottest days on record but it didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stop us enjoying ourselves. Bride: I remember our wedding in snapshots of precious moments and emotions. Feeling strangely calm as we got our hair and makeup done, my childhood friend from Germany helping to tie up my dress, Dad trying to hide his emotions, adrenaline pumping in the car on the way to the ceremony, walking down the aisle looking into Callumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eyes, our friend Patty singing and playing the guitar, feeling overwhelmed with appreciation for all our amazing friends and family, and lots of laughter while we bush-danced.

THE PROPOSAL GROOM: I originally planned to take Johanna to her favourite beach and watch the sunrise over the water. However on the day it was raining and Johanna slept in. So I had a back up plan to go to a lookout at a mountain but when we got there it was still raining and in cloud cover so we couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see anything. I eventually gave up on the picturesque proposal and pulled over on the side of the road and proposed in my car. It wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t to plan (as usual with us) but it was different and memorable.

The big day? GROOM: I started the day very relaxed. I went out for breakfast with my groomsmen and then we went to a golf range before heading back to my/our house to get ready. When we arrived at the ceremony it was spitting rain and it didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t look like it was going away. It continued to rain right up to the moment that Johanna arrived in her car. But then it stopped, cleared and the sun shone throughout the ceremony and through the photos as well. It was a perfect day and I will never forget the moment I caught my first sight of my wife, she was perfectly beautiful.

wedding planning I am a very lucky bride that my groom let me have pretty much what ever I wanted. It was my dream day. But the planning wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t all sunshine and roses. Ged was away for six months leading up to our wedding, which certainly presented some challenges. We got there in the end thanks to amazing people who pitched in to create something beautiful.

Just trust that no matter what happens there will be plenty of people around you to help you make everything beautiful. The proposal? Coronet Peak in New Zealand. Todd took me to the top of the mountain. Todd snowboarded ahead and stopped where he made me a ring out of snow. Once I caught up and stopped he proposed overlooking the mountains.
