Donor Report 2014

“….I committed to a regular giving plan at the time of the 475th Anniversary Campaign in 2007 as part of my belief in the “tithe” principle. To enable others to enjoy the benefits that you have experienced is the icing on the cake.” Mike Burmester, OB, 1953-64

essage from Roderick MacKinnon, Headmaster

I am very proud of our School. I love it that our children blossom and thrive in such a variety of disciplines and fields; for so many young people BGS is that ‘life changing’ experience that we all wish to see. This has been possible for so many in the past, and continues to be so today, very largely as a consequence of the support we have enjoyed from donors, great and small, through the ages. A very big thank you to all who have donated to support the exceptional provision we seek for our young people: this makes a vital and transformational difference to the lives of our children.

Bursary programme I

ntellectual capability, not ability to pay, remains at the heart of the BGS ethos. In 2013 we were delighted to be able to offer financial assistance to over one hundred talented pupils, through a series of awards meaning that nearly ten percent of our students receive funding. Large or small, every gift has helped to achieve something amazing. In the words of one former Sixth form Student as she reflected on her time at BGS:

“It is a great gift, to have a really good education”

Technology for teaching “iPads have allowed students to learn how to use space, how to exploit it, and have improved technique and ultimate performance” Rick Sellers - Director of Sport

he recent introduction of iPads for all Year 8 pupils has generated a real excitement about learning. We have already found that technology increases confidence and motivation by making schoolwork more varied and enjoyable. The advantages can be simple like easy access to the internet at all times, or more complex, such as access to a Russian keyboard for language students. In PE, children are using iPads to monitor their both their own and their contemporaries’ performance. We are hoping that, with financial support, we shall be able to extend the provision of iPads to all Year-groups.

Legacy to Science

hanks to generous legacy gifts this year, in particular the donation from Mr Phillip and Dr Albert Nethercott (OBs), we have seen a programme of upgrades to the science laboratories. We are delighted that we have been able to support a project that reflects Phillip’s keen interest in Science.

“The refurbishment, with its light, bright, practical spaces, has generated a sense of pride among the pupils, and demonstrates BGS’s commitment to investing in the Sciences.” Ben Schober - Head of Biology
