Making a bequest to BGS in your will is one of the greatest gifts that you can make. As a lasting testimony of your affection for the School, a bequest can provide much needed help for our bursary programme, for the improvement of buildings and facilities, or for special resources for cultural, sporting and extra-curricular activities.

Bursaries and Scholarships

Named after our founding benefactor, Nicholas Thorne, this special group has been formed to acknowledge and thank every person who decides to leave a bequest to the School. The Nicholas Thorne Society meets for a social event each autumn, when members can meet each other and hear news of the School’s progress.

Membership can remain private and a Society list is not published.

You may wish to discuss different options with your financial or legal advisor. Each type of bequest or legacy has tax advantages for both the School and your family, because bequests are free of Inheritance Tax and gifts of shares and property are exempt from Capital Gains Tax.

Your solicitor can advise you on the best way to leave a bequest to BGS and this need not mean making a new will. You can simply add a codicil to your existing will, naming Bristol Grammar School (Charity no.

1104425).

By providing help with fees, BGS can attract the ablest children and maintain a wide social mix. Whereas over a third of all students used to receive state-funded assistance, now BGS must provide from its own independent scheme. Bursaries are a fundamental area of need and OBs may wish to put something back to benefit another young person in the future.

Buildings and facilities

Benefactors have shown their firm belief in Bristol Grammar School through their generosity since the School was founded over four centuries ago. Their gifts have enriched the lives of thousands of young people educated at BGS and maintained the academic reputation of this great city school.

We need to preserve this tradition for the generations to come, so that BGS can continue to give the best possible start to talented young boys and girls from all over Bristol.

Our limited space allows few opportunities to expand, but the site continues to be developed imaginatively to provide the right facilities for today’s teaching – future priorities include a new Performing Arts Centre, the Library and our Sixth Form Centre.

General purposes BGS operates within strict financial constraints and cannot always fund those smaller resources which enrich students’ school days, such as extra equipment for music, art, technology and sport.

The General Fund has been created to support the broad, challenging and inspirational education that is a hallmark of BGS.

We recognise that making a will is a personal matter and we respect the wishes of those who would prefer not to disclose their intention. However, if you would like your gift named in memory, please do let us know, and appropriate arrangements will be made.

A simple pecuniary legacy allows you to leave a specific sum of money to BGS, whereas a residual legacy allocates a proportion of your estate after other bequests have been met.

To safeguard your dependents first, a reversionary legacy passes to BGS only after their death, or a conditional legacy names BGS as beneficiary should your heirs not survive you.

You can also leave a specific item, shares, Life Assurance or property as a bequest to BGS.

We realise that the interests of your dependents must come first, but we hope it may be possible for you to consider including BGS in your will – whether in memory of happy days at School, in a wish to put something back, or from a firm belief in the value of a good education.
