About Bristol Motor Speedway

Nestled in the mountains of northeast Tennessee near the Virginia state line, Bristol Motor Speedway is a 0.533-mile concrete oval race track with 28-degree corner banking, 650-feet straightaways and a 40-foot wide racing surface. Renowned as “The World’s Fastest Half-Mile,” the short track features two races each year from the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and NASCAR XFINITY Series, one Monster Truck event and one NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and NASCAR K&N Pro Series-East race. With a crowd capacity in excess of 150,000, the facility is expected to set a new NCAA college football attendance record on Sept. 10, 2016 when the racetrack transforms into a football stadium and plays host to border rivals, the University of Tennessee and Virginia Tech. The speedway property is also home to Bristol Dragway. The historic drag strip celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, headlines with the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals and operates more than 70 event days each season. In 2014, the Bristol Chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, awarded a record-breaking $749,000 to regional children’s charities bringing their seventeen-year total to nearly $9 million in grants. In existence since 1961, Bristol Motor Speedway was purchased in 1996 by Speedway Motorsports, Inc. a publicly traded company that is a leading marketer and promoter of motorsports entertainment in the United States. Welcome, Bristol family, to our biggest year ever! 2016 is proving to be an amazing year for Bristol Motor Speedway. In the past few months, we’ve premiered Colossus TV, the world’s largest permanent, 4-sided, center-hung video display, welcomed the Food City 500, hosted stars from a range of sporting and racing teams, and partnered with the legendary Hatch Show Print to produce a custom series of posters commemorating the year’s events. In June we marked some major milestones. We began the 100-day countdown to the Pilot Flying J Battle at Bristol, and confirmed that the game will be broadcast on ABC’s Saturday Night Football at 8 p.m., Sept. 10. Since Speedway Motorsports, Inc. was the first publicly traded motorsports company on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), we decided to take a few friends up to the city to celebrate. On June 3, our Executive Chairman, O. Bruton Smith, rang the opening bell at the NYSE, along with Pilot Flying J Founder and Chairman James A. Haslam, II, ESPN and ABC commentator Kirk Herbstreit, and a number of friends from the University of Tennessee and Virginia Tech. It was a whirlwind day that also spun us through the studios of Sirius XM and meetings with journalists from across the country. Plus, it was great to see Smokey and Hokie Bird take over Times Square! That same week, we announced a tailgate party worthy of college football’s biggest game ever. On Friday, Sept. 9, Honda Ridgeline will present Bristol’s Tailgate Party starring Kenny Chesney, with special guests The Band Perry and Old Dominion. This monster lineup represents a homecoming for Chesney, an East Tennessee native, and showcases the amazing songwriting/performing talent growing out of our region. If you haven’t gotten your tickets yet, give us a call! Over Father’s Day weekend we welcomed the fastest cars on the planet for the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals. During the event, Bristol Dragway was honored to recognize John Force, driver of the PEAK Antifreeze Chevy Camaro SS Funny Car, as a Legend of Thunder Valley. Shawn Langdon grabbed the win in Top Fuel while his Don Schumacher Racing teammate Tommy Johnson Jr. took the win in Funny Car. Jason Line continued his dominance and took the victory in Pro Stock. As we look toward August and September, we’re getting ready to welcome one of the most popular race weeks on the NASCAR circuit. Join us Aug. 17-20 for the Food City 300, UNOH 200 and Bush’s Beans 150, which all lead up to the Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race. This is America’s Night Race, hosting fans from all 50 states, and we can’t wait to bring everyone home to the World’s Fastest Half-Mile. And, of course, once the cars go quiet, we’ll have around three weeks to transform our short track into a premier college football stadium. The Pilot Flying J Battle at Bristol has been decades in the making, and we are counting down the minutes until this legendary matchup of the University of Tennessee and Virginia Tech. This edition of Bristol Magazine includes features on all our top events, inside views from Logan McCabe, vice president of our Consumer Group, and much more. Flip through for a deeper look at this amazing year, and know that none of this would be possible — or nearly as much fun — without our fans. We have the greatest guests in sports, and look forward to expanding our big Bristol family to include fans of football, music and more. As always, please call us if there is anything we can do to help improve your experience. See you soon!

The Tavern Abingdon, VA By: Fred King

As I write this (end of June), the speedway staff is hard at work getting ready for the 3 biggest events of the year (and possibly any year) that will take place within a three week window between August 20th and September 10th. Of course I’m talking about the Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race on August 20th, the Kenny Chesney, The Band Perry and Old Dominion Tailgate Party on September 9th, and the record attendance setting Pilot Flying J Battle at Bristol NCAA Division I football game featuring the University of Tennessee and Virginia Tech on September 10th. Although I retired from the speedway a little over a year ago, I’ve offered to pitch in during the transition period between NASCAR and football, a mere three week period to transform the World’s Fastest Half Mile into an NCAA football stadium. So, long story short, management accepted the offer and I’m now semi-retired… at least until September 8th.

recently, Fred King, the King of Eating. Over the subsequent years, the building has housed a wide variety of businesses, and during the Civil War was utilized as a hospital which treated both Confederate and Union soldiers. Even if they didn’t serve food (and I’m glad they do) a stop at The Tavern during your stay in the area would be well worth the trip. But thankfully, they do serve food, and, since there were about 20 of us this particular night, there was plenty of it being served. I guess you could categorize The Tavern as a German / American restaurant. German dishes include Kassler Rippchen, Wienerschnitzel, and Jagerschnitzel ranging in price from $27-$30. I had the Wienerschnitzel and it was terrific. American fare includes a full range of beef dishes as well as lamb, chicken, duck and seafood (scallops, salmon, trout). Prices range from $25-$42. The portions are substantial and from what I could see with all the smiling faces around my table, no one was disappointed.

So, recently I attended a two day off site planning meeting which included speedway management from all operational areas. The meeting was held at the Martha Washington hotel in Abingdon, VA, and included a team dinner at this months featured restaurant, The Tavern.

While in the area, give Abingdon, VA a look-see. There is a lot to do and experience in this historic town, including the Barter Theatre, the Creeper Trail, the Martha Washington Hotel (and its ghosts), and, of course, The Tavern.

The Tavern is located in the oldest of Abingdon’s historic buildings, built in 1779. Originally built as an overnight inn and tavern, its guests have included Henry Clay, Andrew Jackson, Louis Philippe, the King of France and now, most

The only unpleasant aspect of our evening was the after dinner uphill walk back to the hotel, but we all sucked it up, taking one for the team that hopes to make history in September.

Under the Lights of Bristol

There are other races under the lights, but only one Bristol Night Race by: Jeff Birchfield

There are other races on the NASCAR Sprint Cup tour run under the lights. But mention the words, night race, and most NASCAR fans immediately think of Bristol Motor Speedway. Poll after poll, fans have voted the Bristol Night Race the most popular race in NASCAR. It’s also one of the top sporting events in the world with fans coming from all 50 states and 26 foreign countries in 2015. Now, the race is being taken to the next level with a new sponsor which is no stranger to the sport.

Speedway

Under the Lights of Bristol

“For years I’ve told anybody who would listen that the biggest sporting event in this country is the night race at Bristol Motor Speedway,” “It’s my favorite race track. I like the - Taylor Zarzour big superspeedways too, but there been to it six or seven times and there’s nothing like it.” is no place like Bristol. The night “I’ve Even NASCAR drivers who are usually so focused that they don’t race too, we’re proud to be a part pay attention to much happening outside their race car, often find themselves in awe at Bristol. Joey Logano, winner of the last two of the Bristol community with our Bristol night races, said it ranks up there with the Daytona 500 as the store there. Our folks there and our biggest events on the NASCAR circuit. His Team Penske teammate, Brad Keselowski, agrees. “It’s definitely the biggest short-track in customers love NASCAR.” the world and a huge race for me personally” Keselowski said. “I was able to win that race a few years back and it’s one of those races - Johnny Morris Named the Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race, it promises to remain one of the marquee events on the NASCAR circuit and one of the most attended sporting events in the world. “We’re very, very excited about it,” Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris said about teaming with the National Rifle Association to sponsor the 500-lap race.

They also understand what a unique atmosphere the “World’s Fastest Half-Mile” provides. Taylor Zarzour of Touchdown Radio, who will be part of the radio broadcast team for the Battle at Bristol football game between the University of Tennessee and Virginia Tech in September, has been at the Rose Bowl on multiple occasions. But as big as the college football game known as the “granddaddy of them all,” is, he said it can’t compare to the Bristol night race. There aren’t just two teams competing for the win, but 40 of the world’s best stock car drivers in front of a stadium filled with over 150,000 fams.

where you just get that feeling. I would love to win it again because of it. It really is a big deal.”

It’s a race which also helped define the legend of Dale Earnhardt, who was involved in two classic finishes with another NASCAR Hall of Famer, Terry Labonte. In 1995, Earnhardt hit the back bumper of Labonte’s car as he exited the final turn of the final lap. Labonte’s car slid across the finish line sideways and slammed into the outside wall. However, Labonte crossed the finish line first and he still won the race. It hadn’t looked like Earnhardt would be able to catch Labonte, but he managed to get to his back bumper thanks to lapped traffic. The wild finish provided some of the most memorable victory lane images of any NASCAR race. Labonte and his crew smiled and posed with the winner’s trophy as his mangled race car sat in the background with smoke spewing out of it.

"I didn’t mean to wreck him. I just meant to rattle his cage.” - Dale Earnhardt It’s part of the appeal of never knowing what is going to happen next at the “World’s Fastest Half-Mile.” Comparing stock car racing’s top events with golf’s majors and tennis’ grand slam, Dale Earnhardt Jr. recently posted on Twitter how he saw the Bristol night race as one of NASCAR’s majors. For Earnhardt, it’s not just his father’s Bristol performances that have made the race memorable. His favorite driver outside of his family was Cale Yarborough, winner of the first Bristol night race in 1978.

Yarborough, known for his toughness, had played semi-pro football and wrestled alligators outside of the race car. But even he would have a tough time matching the toughness Earnhardt Jr. showed at Bristol in 2004. With his legs still badly burned after a sports car wreck a month earlier, Earnhardt Jr. became the first driver in Bristol history to sweep Sprint Cup and XFINITY Series races in the same weekend. He won the Food City 250 on a Friday and then followed up the next night by leading 295 of 500 laps. Six years later, Kyle Busch became the first driver in NASCAR history to sweep all three national series races in the same week. He won the Camping World Truck Series race on Wednesday night, the Food City 250 on a Friday night and then charged from a 19th place starting position to win the Night Race on Saturday. All in all, Bristol hosts one of the biggest weeks of motorsports anywhere in the world in August. There is the traditional doubleheader of the Bush’s Beans 150 for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Series and the UNOH 200 for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series scheduled for Wednesday, August 17. NASCAR Sprint Cup Series qualifying and the Food City 300 for the XFINITY Series is slated for Friday, August 19. It all culminates with NASCAR’s most popular race, the Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race, on Saturday, August 20.

NIGHT RACE

Four years later, the two drivers were at it again with much different results. This time, Labonte had gotten tires on a late pit stop and charged through the field. He passed Earnhardt in turn one of the final lap, but coming off turn two, Earnhardt’s black Chevrolet hit Labonte’s yellow Chevrolet. Earnhardt continued on and won the race, while this time both Labonte and his car were left fuming. It led to the most famous post-race line of any NASCAR race. When asked about what happened, Earnhardt delivered the famous quote,

THE KIDWELL FAMILY

iBelong Profile Chad Kidwell from Camp Dix, Kentucky

For our summer ’16 iBelong Member profile, we head just a bit north of “The Last Great Colosseum” to “The Bluegrass State” – specifically to Lewis County, which hugs the banks of the Ohio River along Interstate 64. There you’ll find Laurel Elementary School principal and Bristol season ticket holder Chad Kidwell. Approaching twenty years of attending races at BMS, Kidwell possess a fond appreciation for his annual treks to northeast Tennessee. Never short on words, here’s Chad’s Bristol story…

16

Summer 2016

iBelong Profile

THE KIDWELL FAMILY BMS: How long have you been coming to Bristol, and how long have you been a season ticket holder? KIDWELL: The first race I attended was the 1998 Goody's Headache Powder 500 during which Mark Martin scored a very emotional win. It was just after his father passed away and it was a memorable win for Mark which capped off an experience I’ll never forget. I knew I had to get back to Bristol! However, it was a couple of years before I could get back. I attended the 2001 August race, and finally became a season ticket holder in 2002. BMS: Tell us about the first time you came to Bristol. KIDWELL: Again, it was a trip I’ll never forget. We found tickets at the last minute for the 1998 August Night Race. We were like kids in a candy store. Six of us piled in a van and made the 260-mile trip there and back in the same day. It was a tough trip to do in a day, but it was worth every minute of it. I’ve had few experiences in my life that equal the moment when I first walked into the hallowed grandstands of Bristol. The feeling was truly intoxicating – and I mean that in a good way. Other adjectives that come to mind? It was

exhilarating, exciting and unforgettable. The color, the sound, the emotion – all touched every one of the senses. To be honest with you, Bristol is simply addictive. BMS: What is your most cherished Bristol memory/moment? KIDWELL: There are experiences that make every race/ trip to BMS special, both on and off of the track. Sometimes it’s the simple ones that truly stand out. While it’s a far cry from that first visit in ‘98, which always will be special, the one I hold near and dear right now is a recent one. I’ll never forget watching my 10-year-old son Jackson simply “being a kid” while watching the freestyle motocross stunts during the August Wednesday night doubleheader UNOH 200 pre-race. Don’t get me wrong, he loved the racing… But anyone who is a parent knows the feeling of seeing sheer happiness and joy on a child’s face. It was priceless and I’ll never forget it. BMS: When you tell others about Bristol, how do you describe this place? KIDWELL: This one is easy for me. I tell people that Bristol is simply "spiritual." From the campgrounds and Bruton

THE KIDWELL FAMILY Smith building, to the track itself… both the people and the racing are truly "the way they ought’a be." I know this sounds philosophical to a degree, but with every Bristol trip I am left with a refreshed hope for both humanity and NASCAR. Another special ingredient is that at Bristol you make lifelong friends. Whether you meet in the campgrounds, on social media or in the grandstands, you’re bound to make lasting connections at Bristol. To that end I have to give a special shout-out to some of my life-longers such as Bill and Yolanda Rogers, Anthony and Lynn Farmer, and some rowdy friends we call Cooler, Tadpole, D8, 07, Beiter and RIP. BMS: What separates Bristol from the rest of the pack among motorsports venues? KIDWELL: Without a doubt, it’s the caring and knowledgeable staff at BMS. Trust me, the customer service and hospitality has not been matched by any other speedway based upon my experiences. This list could go on forever. Bristol definitely has the monopoly on the pre-race show. In fact, Bristol’s pre-race festivities alone bring fans together in a way other venues simply cannot.

18

Summer 2016

Bristol provides more value for its race fans as well; there are attractions for kids, live music, and to top it all off… Bristol provides the BEST white knuckle seat of your pants racing on the circuit. BMS: Tell us a little more about your family and your racing allegiances. KIDWELL: I am blessed with one “smokin’ hot wife” – Joanne Kidwell. She is an ol’ school Ward Burton fan who somehow has transformed into a current Joey Logano supporter. As for me, I grew up a Bill Elliott guy. Now, to see “Awesome Bill’s” son Chase in the mix puts a smile on my face. As info, both Joanne and I are educators. She teaches English at Lewis County High School; and I am principal at Laurel Elementary School. My two sons, Jackson (11) and Ellis (8) are excellent students. I chuckle when I say this, but those boys are a great opportunity for Bristol to leverage their ticket renewals. As you can tell, family means a lot to me. And by the way… Jackson and Ellis are unapologetic Kyle Busch fans. Obviously they enjoy Bristol!

Bruton Smith and Jerry Caldwell decided to heighten the celebration of the 100 day out mark from the Pilot Flying J Battle at Bristol college football game in the biggest municipal area in the USA, New York City. While in NYC, Smith and Caldwell had a crew of representatives promote the sure-to-be spectacle in the Big Apple on June 1, 2016.

All the changes happening at Bristol are, in every sense of the word, monumental. Colossus TV completely redefines the conversation. It’s transforming what was, for many years, a NASCAR-only track, expanding it into a venue that can welcome major sporting events, concerts and festivals. That makes a huge impact on everything — our regional economy, for starters, as well as our idea of what’s now possible. Great things are coming for our big Bristol family, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.” The Pilot Flying J Battle at Bristol will take place on September 10, 2016 with a kick off time of 8 p.m. and will be broadcast on ABC.

I am the Vice President of Consumer Group. I oversee the marketing, PR and the ticketing department.

I like to take care of myself. If I don’t start my day with some kind of exercise my day doesn’t go as well. I like to go on a run in the mornings or the gym in the mornings. I really enjoy college sports. I used to be a season ticket holder at UT for football games. I’m an avid reader. I usually read every night before going to bed and it’s usually something real relaxing. I used to play golf but not so much anymore. Also I enjoy cooking; I love grilling out and try new things. I also love traveling when I get a chance to.

How many years have you worked at Bristol? I have been here just over 20 years. Where did you go to school? I went to school in Knoxville at the University of Tennessee. I worked a little after college and was living in Memphis at the time so I decided to go back to school and get my Executive MBA from what was at the time called Memphis State but is now known as University of Memphis.

What’s your favorite food? I love fish but I would also call myself a meat eater. My least favorite thing would have to be cauliflower. My favorite dish would have to be steak with blue cheese melted on it, seared and cooked medium rare.

Family? I’m married to my wife Alison, and I have five great kids and three grandchildren.

You have had the opportunity over the past 20 years to meet celebrities and athletes from all over the world, who has been your favorite?

Employee Pfofile

LOGAN MCCABE That would be Quentin Tarantino. He was in our marketing suite a few years ago. He is cutting edge with the things he has done with his films. He was humble and talked to everyone he was around. Anyone that would come up to him for a autograph or a picture he wouldn’t hesitate. He was a really cool guy. Where would be your dream vacation? My favorite place to go is the British Virgin Islands. My heritage is both Scottish and Irish and I would love to go to both of those places. Next March my son Turner is going with the Science Hill Marching Band to New York City and is going to play for the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade so I can’t wait for that. With this being the biggest year in the history of Bristol Motor Speedway and Dragway, what’s it like to be a part of it? It’s humbling. I have been lucky enough to have worked here for over 20 years now and have seen the growth of BMS. I have been

blessed to have worked with a lot of great companies and have been in sports marketing for a while and to have the opportunity to work on something that I enjoy like college football, which is going to be historic and to have a small part in that is very humbling. It’s an honor and this is by far the best place at which I have worked. I work with some of the best people and we are real lucky. We are a public traded company and we are really decentralized and the track is a really special place. The way its run makes it a real joy to come to work every day. It’s exciting. We are all really busy and taking time to think about what a huge opportunity this is and the fact that we are doing this and we are lucky that we have the opportunity to do it. Smelling the roses and watching the sun rise and really appreciating the moment and listening to the stories that are going to come from it. Bristol started the tradition of letting drivers pick their walk out songs for driver intros. If you were a driver what would your song be? I would go with Amazing Grace.

Spring 2016

FROM THE BATTLEFIELD, TO THE BEACH: THE UNIQUE SOUNDS OF BRISTOL By: Andrew K. Barker

A typical summer in East Tennessee consists of two major events in the Tri-Cities that make their own unique mark in the valley of the Eastern Appalachian Mountains. The first is the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals, a musical experience of 10,000 horsepower instruments that rattle every sense and bone in one’s body. The next unique sound is the intense roar of 40 stock cars doing battle inside the Last Great Colosseum during the Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race. It’s a spectacle unlike anything else in NASCAR. For 2016, the sweet music that Bristol Motor Speedway conducts is intensified when the lights go down for the Pilot Flying J Battle at Bristol, the world’s largest college football game ever. The roar of 150,000 plus fans and the synchronized symphony of two of college football’s largest marching bands will create a unique sound that hasn’t been heard in Bristol. With all the hypothetical music coming from Bristol Motor Speedway, it’s only fitting that the largest concert ever in the region will open the Pilot Flying J Battle at Bristol weekend. The ringing of guitar chords and the beat of a drum will fill the hills and hollers that line the mountain ridges. Honda Ridgeline Presents Bristol’s Tailgate Party will be a celebration unlike any other. Kenny Chesney, The Band Perry and Old Dominion will bring the musical heritage of Thunder Valley to the national spotlight. Bristol has a rich history of racing and country music. Beginning in 1920, country music was born in the foothills of the Appalachians. 40 years later, what would become one of the most popular tracks on the NASCAR circuit was built. Just as the Pilot Flying J Battle at Bristol brings together the best of Tennessee and Virginia, so does the Honda Ridgeline Presents Bristol’s Tailgate Party. Old Dominion, the band behind the country music hit “Snapback”, formed in Virginia while The Band Perry, whose current No. 1 single “Live Forever” has been selected as the US’ song for the 2016 Olympics, molded their craft down the road in Greeneville, Tenn.

The headliner for the concert is East Tennessee’s own, Kenny Chesney. Chesney was born in Knoxville, Tenn. and is a graduate of East Tennessee State University in nearby Johnson City.

"In terms of excitement, this year is a monster." - Jerry Caldwell I didn't think it was possible for the buzz around this game to get any louder, but Kenny Chesney coming home to lead a massive tailgate party? That news amplifies all the energy a thousand times over." The concert will take place on Friday night, Sept. 9, on the eve of the Pilot Flying J Battle at Bristol. Utilizing the grandstands on the backstretch, a crowd of 45,000 will be on hand to tailgate in preparation for the game the next day.

"I had a lot of dreams then, but never did I dream I would be playing at Bristol Motor Speedway. The idea of that was too big to dream. So to say I'm excited to be coming back to play in an area where this dream started is an understatement!" - Kenny Chesney Music and sports have defined my life, and it's not every day an artist is allowed to combine the two for something as special as this." It’s only fitting that 22 years after Chesney’s first album the wildest dreams of the world’s largest college football game ever are becoming a reality.

THUNDER IN THE VALLEY: 2016 NHRA NATIONAL EVENT A MAJOR HIT by: Chris Lawyer

Once a year, the world’s loudest and fastest race cars arrive at Thunder Valley, a spectacle that keeps fans on the edge of their seats (and at the fence!) in one of the most intense sporting experiences on the planet. The 2016 NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals are now in the books and what a successful weekend it was. With some of the largest crowds at the event in years, there were positive vibes all over the facility as 10,000 horsepower monsters rocketed down Bristol Dragway at speeds well over 300 mph.

When you have one of the most picturesque facilities in all of motorsports, you are held to a higher standard. Everyone at Bristol plays a role in making the experience second-to-none. From the ushers and suite attendants, to the administration and operations staffs, the crew at Bristol Dragway is there to exceed expectations and that surely occurred in 2016. The NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals was the 11th race during the 2016 NHRA season, a season that has been highlighted by NHRA’s move to Fox Sports 1. The new FS1 television package has helped NHRA continue to make its move towards the mainstream. That was noticeable at Bristol with live qualifying on Saturday and final eliminations following the NASCAR XFINITY Series race in Iowa. Racing action was intense as the world’s best drag racers raced side-by-side. Friday night’s qualifying session is one of the most popular on the NHRA circuit and it did not disappoint as numerous track records were broken. On Saturday, fans were treated to two final rounds of qualifying that set the field for Sunday’s eliminations. Following the exciting final two sessions, numerous NHRA stars participated in the Bristol Dragway FanFest, located in the midway. An incredible amount

of fans came for the fanfest, which once again proved that NHRA and Bristol provide one of the most fan friendly experiences in the country. As the sun rose on a beautiful Sunday morning, there was electricity in the air as NHRA legend and current Funny Car driver John Force was inducted into the Legends of Thunder Valley for 2016. Force, the winningest driver in NHRA professional history, holds numerous distinctions at Bristol Dragway: the winningest Funny Car driver with four wins, holding both Funny Car track records in time and speed (prior to this weekend) and winning the 1999 Winston Showdown, an exhibition race that pitted Funny Cars against Top Fuel dragsters for the first time. Force won the Showdown in the iconic Superman Funny Car and the event was so popular it helped usher in an NHRA national event in 2001. Force was honored with a plaque during driver introductions, his name on the Legends of Thunder Valley tower, with special edition hero cards and with a specialty pre-race banner that thousands of fans signed. With it being Father’s Day, Force and two of his daughters, Brittany and Courtney, participated in the Track Walk, which allows fans the opportunity to walk down the dragstrip prior to the quickest cars on the planet.

While Force had a memorable day off the track, his day on the track ended early. He fell in the first round of Funny Car to 2012 world champion Jack Beckman. Steve Torrence (Top Fuel), Ron Capps (Funny Car) and Jason Line (Pro Stock) entered eliminations as the No. 1 qualifiers. Both Torrence and Capps ran well throughout the weekend, but both were eliminated in the semifinals. In Top Fuel, 2013 world champion Shawn Langdon and his Don Schumacher Racing teammate, eight-time world champion Tony Schumacher, met in the final, with both appearing in their first final of the season. Langdon defeated Schumacher with a 3.838-second pass at 322.19 mph, picking up his first win of the season and first with DSR. It was Red Fuel dragster driver’s second win at Bristol. The Funny Car final featured the two most recent Bristol winners as

2014 winner Tommy Johnson Jr. took on 2015 winner and nearby Virginia resident and two-time world champion Matt Hagan. Johnson Jr.’s Make-A-Wish Foundation Dodge Charger was quicker off the line and he held off Hagan to claim the win with a 4.038 at 317.57. The win was Johnson Jr.’s was first of the season, 13th of his career and second at Thunder Valley. KB Racing has dominated the Pro Stock category so far this season as teammates Line and Greg Anderson met in the final. Both Summit Racing Chevy Camaros’ were quick all weekend but it was two-time world champion Line who outlasted his teammate and four-time world champion Anderson. Line ran a 6.668 at 207.59 to pick up his sixth win of the season and 43rd of his career. NHRA will once again return to the Appalachian Mountains next year for the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals on Father’s Day weekend, June 18, 2017.

50/50 Raffle

Win up to $250,000 in Speedway Children's Charities 50/50 Raffle By: Chris Lawyer

Speedway Children’s Charities (SCC) is known for giving away cars and tractors each fall in the quest to raise money for local children in need. But this year under the umbrella of “Biggest Year Ever” at Bristol Motor Speedway, SCC is raising the stakes and giving one lucky person the chance to win up to $250,000. Claudia Byrd, the executive director of SCC for 18 years, has always wanted the Bristol Chapter to raise $1 million. To help break that barrier in 2016, Speedway Children’s Charities is introducing the Speedway Children’s Charities 50/50 Raffle presented by Grand Home Furnishings during the second half of the speedway year. “It’s been our goal to reach $1 million in a year,” said Byrd. “Our promotions from this year are helping us to reach that benchmark and we are confident that the Speedway Children’s Charities 50/50 Raffle presented by Grand Home Furnishings will help us make that goal.” The raffle features tickets that are $10 per person with the winner receiving up to $250,000. Guests can enter the raffle now at www. bristol.speedwaycharities.org. In addition, tickets will be during August’s Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race week and September’s Pilot Flying J Battle at Bristol, as well as the Bristol Motor Speedway ticket office. The winner of the raffle will be announced during the third quarter of the Pilot Flying J Battle at Bristol. The raffle has been off to a great start and received great publicity during the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals. Two-time NHRA world champion and Christiansburg, Va. resident Matt Hagan raced with a 50/50 Raffle sticker on the body of his 10,000 horsepower Rocky Boots Dodge Charger Funny Car while 2012 Pro Stock world

champion and Greeneville, Tenn. resident Allen Johnson drove with an SCC sticker on the front quarter panels of his Marathon Oil Dodge Dart Pro Stocker. “That was a thrill to see Speedway Children’s Charities and the 50/50 Raffle represented by both Matt and Allen on the track during the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals,” said Byrd. “I’ve been doing this a long time and haven’t seen anything like that. It was truly an honor for the charity. The Speedway Children’s 50/50 Raffle presented by Grand Home Furnishings is just one of many promotions that SCC holds throughout the year. So far this season, SCC has raised money through numerous events including the Bristol Ultimate Experiences Online Auction, Spring Race 5K, Annual SCC Food City 500 dinner, Jersey Mike’s Day of Giving, the Battle at Bristol Charity Dinner and Golf Tournament presented by Bank of Tennessee and the Bristol Dragway Celebrity Shooting Tournament presented by NRA. SCC isn’t slowing down with the introduction of the 50/50 Raffle. The charity will host continued events throughout the rest of the season focused on the August Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race (Half-Mile Hot Laps driven by Seat Time Racing School, a memorabilia live auction, the Night Race 5K presented by Bojangles), September’s Pilot Flying J Battle at Bristol and Bucs at Bristol and will finish up the season with the always popular The Pinnacle Speedway in Lights.

In 2015, Speedway Children’s Charities raised $805,900, the most money ever raised by the Bristol chapter. A BMS-issued permit helps guests obtain the closest available handicap parking to their seats. Anyone planning to use a state-issued placard should send copies of the placard and the supporting documentation in advance, along with this application form, so the BMS Events Department can issue advance permits for the appropriate parking lots. The documentation required (registration card, receipt, state-recognized disabilities ID card, driver’s license, or original approved application forms) is the

of Tennessee law as fraudulently using a state-issued placard.

Individuals with temporary disabilities should submit medical documentation with an application to receive the BMS-issued permit.

Guests who do not apply in advance and only have state-issued placards should enter at the Dragway Entrance (Hwy. 394). Law enforcement officials will check documentation to ensure that the person to whom the permit is issued is in the vehicle. If additional parking is available at the time of arrival, guests will be directed to those parking areas.

Space is limited in the various parking areas and will be assigned, when possible, based on seating location as well as first to apply, first served. After applications are received, notification will be sent to the applicant confirming or denying the request. BMSissued permits will be mailed approximately one month prior to the race. Law enforcement officials will be at the South and Dragway Entrance checkpoints to ensure that the name on the BMS-issued permit matches a photo ID of the occupant of the vehicle using the permit. Transferring a BMS-issued permit to another person should be considered the same violation

Please note that these permit procedures do not apply to reserved seat wheelchair guests. Reserved wheelchair seating and parking guests should contact Beverly Buster at 423-989-6902. For all other handicap parking questions, contact Steve Jackson at 423-989-6935 or sjackson@bristolmotorspeedway.com. If you applied for parking in 2015, you must apply again for 2016 parking.
