ANNUAL BALL 2015
SETTING THE MOOD
Tonight we’re taking you back in time to good ol’ Blighty at the height of the big-band era. A time when spirits were high, London’s Dancehalls were filled to the brim and we flooded the streets to celebrate the crowning of ‘Her Majesty’. We hope you’ve got your dancing shoes on because tonight is all about showing off the Jitterbug, Jive and Swing. For those of you who don’t fancy a kick and a prance, who knows there might even be a good old-fashioned sing-a-long!
FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE BRITISH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Last year the British Chamber Ball took you to the heart of India. This year our travels take you to Britain. And just to prove that nothing is too difficult for the British Chamber, we also time travel. Back to the swing era – to the 40s and 50s. A time when people were determined to enjoy themselves after all they had been through. A time which, even now, is defined by its music: the big band sound, swing, jive. A time when people did not listen to music by being plugged into their smart phones, but listened to it together round their radios, and most of all by going to the dance halls and listening to the great bands and singers of the era. And not just listening to them, dancing to them. Long into the night. That is what we offer you this evening. An evening of good fun, good company, good food. A chance to strut your stuff in the fashion of the era and most importantly, terrific music and a chance to dance till you drop. It is all this that makes the BritCham Ball so different and year after year one of the most enjoyable and popular events on the Hong Kong calendar. So on behalf of the British Chamber a very warm welcome to you all to this year’s Annual Ball. Thank you for your support and participation. And thank you in advance for the enthusiasm and for getting into the swing of the evening which are by far the most important ingredients for making this a great success.
As well as having fun, tonight we are doing some real good through our support to KELY Support Group –a non-government funded bilingual organisation which provides education based approaches to empower youngsters to make informed lifestyle decisions. Their programmes and services focus on prevention of drug and alcohol abuse, and are designed to tackle what the group regards as the common reasons for abuse such as peer pressure, low self-esteem and poverty. Please do dig deep to help us help them. None of this would happen without the enormously generous support of our sponsors. Without their generosity it would simply not be possible for us to put on such a distinctive and fun evening. An enormous vote of thanks to Standard Chartered Bank, to our Gold, Silver and other Sponsors (whose names you will find on the programme) and to all of you who have taken tables and places. We are very grateful indeed for your support. I also want to thank the Chamber team for the huge enthusiasm creativity and hard work they have put into the arrangements for this evening.
Thank you all again for being with us. I hope you have a fantastic evening.
AN EVENING OF GOOD FUN, GOOD COMPANY, GOOD FOOD.
ON BEHALF OF STANDARD CHARTERED BANK On behalf of Standard Chartered Bank – a very warm welcome! Standard Chartered Bank is pleased to be the title sponsor of the British Chamber of Commerce Annual Ball for the thirteenth consecutive year. We are delighted to be supporting this event again and excited to be spending a brilliant evening with our friends at the British Chamber of Commerce and our valued clients and guests. Our long term support for this event reflects our appreciation of the Chamber’s and its members’ work, and our commitment to Hong Kong’s business community of which we play an active part. This evening’s raised fund will support the work and services provided by KELY Support Group, which offers a positive environment and quality mentorship to young people to interact and learn to support one another, helping them to develop leadership skills through various KELY programmes and workshops. The meaningful services and work provided by KELY Support Group align very well with the Bank’s commitment to support the wider community in Hong Kong, and to live with our brand promise – Here for good. Best wishes to all and enjoy the evening!

THE CAUSE ALL FUNDS RAISED TONIGHT WILL GO TOWARDS OUR CHOSEN CHARITY, KELY SUPPORT GROUP KELY Support Group (KELY) is a nongovernment funded bilingual organisation which provides empathetic, nonjudgmental, confidential and inclusive support to youth between the ages of 14 to 24 in Hong Kong. KELY addresses the issue of drug and alcohol abuse through helping vulnerable youth tackle common root causes, such as peer pressure, depression, anxiety, lack of self-awareness, low self-esteem, unemployment, discrimination, boredom and poverty. KELY employs a holistic approach to ensure that our services are relatable and
inclusive to young people in Hong Kong. Our target youth communities include Chinese-speaking, ethnic minority and non-Chinese speaking youth. We recognise that each community may encounter different root causes, and are dedicated to identifying and providing relevant support services to those who may be at risk of drug and alcohol abuse. Our mission is to empower young people to make informed choices in reaching their potential through prevention and harm reduction, advocacy and intervention services for Hong Kong’s young people.
Donations raised by The British Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong will go directly towards It Begins With One Story, KELY’s school-based drug and alcohol prevention programme. This programme is targeted to benefit ethnic minority between the ages of 14 to 17, and aims to help them: • Enhance protective factors for participants (including resistance strategies, self-confidence, peer support) • Develop technical skills & use them to create culturally appropriate resources around substance misuse • Increase positive peer networks amongst the cohort and facilitate communication with a trusted adult KELY’s aim is to benefit those young people with limited opportunities and lower social capital to enhance their leadership qualities and find their potential. For this programme, KELY is looking to partnering with schools located in one of the 3 most disadvantaged areas in Hong Kong (Sham Shui Po, Kwun Tong or Kwai Tsing), including those institutions that are under-resourced.

In the 1950s, a sophisticated look for men would mean either a side-parted hairstyle with a quiff or a perfectly slicked-back form, both of which required a generous dose of pomade. Brylcreem, originated in Birmingham, became so widely used by the average self-respecting men that the advertisements even “verbify” the brand name.
THE FINAL TOUCH… BRY LCREEM YOUR HAIR
DI D YO U KN OW… When the jitterbug first picked up popularity in Britain, traditional ballroom dance luminaries were none too pleased with this foreign dance. Alex Moore called it “the most disgusting and degrading sight ever seen in a ballroom”; British couples were even advised to avoid the “rude American dancing”. Naturally the advice was not heeded, and today you can still learn the moves at many dance schools.
QUICK GUIDE FOR BEGINNERS
The
A few quick and dirty steps for all you jitterbug beginners. Before you start, remember to stand with your feet relatively close together and your knees and ankles relaxed. Keep an upright posture in your torso.
Remember to face your partner on the dance floor, we’ve just put you side-by-side to learn the steps!
When you’ve mastered the basic steps, you can move on to learning more complicated footwork.

T H E H A P PY F E E T O F J I T T E R B U G S The roots of the jitterbug can be traced back to the Lindy Hop, which was the 1920s African-American community’s answer to European partner dance, adding fast turns, kicks, jumps and flailing hands. Incidentally, American Army G.I.s brought this dance to Europe, in particular Britain, when
they fought alongside the Allies in World War II. Ballrooms and dancehalls welcomed the American soldiers stationed in Britain with open doors, as well as British working class girls who hadn’t had much chance to dance before then. The footwork of the Lindy Hop was simplified to suit music with a faster tempo, giving birth to the British variation that is jitterbug.
