Operation Breakthrough, Hong Kong Operation Breakthrough gives young people in Hong Kong an opportunity to turn their lives around through involvement in sporting activities. The Charity aims to fight crime and juvenile delinquency amongst low income and immigrant communities in Hong Kong. Participants in the scheme are from disadvantaged backgrounds and dysfunctional families which provide little or no support. They have either been arrested by the police for minor offences or have been identified by schools or social workers as being at-risk. Through participation in sporting activities run by volunteers from the Hong Kong Police and other agencies, at-risk young people are introduced to a safe, stimulating and disciplined environment where they have the opportunity to build their self-esteem and confidence, while providing them a positive focus in their lives. The programme also redefines their relationship with authority figures such as police and teachers. Here are some real life stories illustrating how Breakthrough has genuinely changed lives.
WONG FU Wong Fu was one of the first participants in the early Breakthrough Programme. He was referred to the Boxing scheme at the age of 14 by his social worker, and quickly adapted to the physical nature of the training and got on very well with the volunteer police officers. As the Boxing programme developed, Wong Fu took part in competitive bouts and then started to train the newer members. After the age of 18 he was trying to hold down various low paying jobs and realised he needed to have qualifications to embark on a proper career. He enrolled in educational courses which enabled him to do this and later Wong Fu was successful in applying to join the Fire Services Department. Wong Fu represented Hong Kong in the World Police and Fire Games in Vancouver last year and came away with a silver medal.
Sures Gurung Sures came to Operation Breakthrough in 2003 after being arrested for fighting and given a Superintendents warning. He quickly adapted to Boxing and showed a natural flair as an all round athlete, displaying the in-built fighting spirit that many Nepalese boys seem to have. He was soon fighting competitively and proved a very hard opponent. As he improved so did his fight record which still has to register a single defeat despite over a dozen fights. There is a very good chance he will be recognised as the Hong Kong Champion later this year for his weight division. With guidance and some financial help from Operation Breakthrough, Sures is currently studying for a Diploma in Leisure Studies at the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education, and hopes to become a full time Boxing and Fitness instructor.
