TESTIMONIALS I have only one complaint about Brite Magazine — WHAT TOOK IT SO LONG TO HIT THE CENTRAL FLORIDA SCENE??? As a contributing writer for the last two issues, I have reaped tremendous business opportunities from Brite’s reading audience. Like my books, Brite Magazine targets intelligent and thoughtful women of all ages and it is just this audience that gets the most out of what the magazine offers. From just two short articles, I have been contacted for personal appearances ranging from a local bookclub of twelve to an executive women’s business group of 100+! Just imagine what I could do if Brite were monthly! Hint hint...:) Elizabeth Allen Author of Who Got Liz Gardner / Financial Advisor at Ameriprise Orlando, FL
Since Brite’s inception, my company, Legal One, has been a proud supporter and contributor. After the release of each issue, Sara has brilliantly considered feedback from her readers and contributors, making Brite even better with each issue. Just recently, we had a prospective client/customer come into the office with our article highlighted and tagged for reference! Information is power, and Brite is a powerful tool for us in spreading the word about who we are and our services. Thank you Sara and Brite. We look forward to a long a prosperous relationship! Why is it that we all love wrapped gifts? To this day I still get excited about getting and giving a beautifully wrapped box embellished with curled ribbon and a sealed card. Most of us, except those saintly people who donate all their gift money to saving baby seals every year, love wrapped gifts. And why not? It’s nice to feel special and make someone feel loved too. Have you ever received a gift only to find the item inside was all wrong? I remember one of my friends received a food sealer from her husband at Christmas. She was excited to unwrap this beautiful gift only to find the contents of a motor and saran wrap staring back at her. She even shook the box upside down hoping for a piece of jewelry to slide out. No such luck and guess who was frantically looking for a “more appropriate” wrapped gift? Wouldn’t it be interesting if our own self ‘wrapping paper’ reflected the contents of the inside? Then there wouldn’t be any letdowns — no ugly surprises. We’d be able to be true to ourselves and admit our insecurities. We’d constantly strive for an upgrade in paper to reflect our positive growth. In this issue, we encourage you to redefine what you are wrapped up in. Is your wrapping paper a true reflection of the contents in the inside? Are you wrapped up in self-defeat and pity or wrapped up in hope and peace? It’s time to embrace a true gift this holiday season by redefining and re-wrapping yourself. Need some inspiration? Check out our feature on our women entrepreneurs – they wrapped themselves up in confidence, perseverance and positive change. Learn from our business section about the importance of wrapping yourself in authentic identity. Read the Pearls of Wisdom page for a game plan of how to begin this “re-wrapping” process. No physical gift will be able to bring this amount of peace, love and hope to an individual… and isn’t that what the holidays are really about?

HOT HOLIDAY HAIR — 3 DO-IT-YOURSELF LOOKS BY KIM MONTGOMERY Since we all are on the fast track, we need more simplified and quick hairstyles to wear for different occasions. We really don’t see people coming to the salon much to get just a hairstyle for special events. Because the working woman is so busy, she needs a way to get a great look for a function that she can do in minutes, but still be fashion forward. The trends for this season show a variety of looks for all hair textures. On the runway for the Fall/Winter Fashion Week in New York

City, we saw a lot of tousled hair that was pulled over to a side braid, ponytail, or bun. We also saw various looks with waves and curls added to the hair, while other parts of the hair were left straight and smooth. For some of the more elaborate fashions, hair jewelry, paint, and fabrics were even added to braids and buns. Based on the looks for the season, we have some quick and easy looks that you can do straight out of the office.

Day-to-night Christmas Cocktail Party
(1) Wrap hair around the curling iron instead of pulling the iron to the ends and then rolling it up. This gives the hair more of a “next day”/wavy look. Concentrate on just doing the ends, so that the top is more straight and smooth. You can add simple pin for decoration on the fuller side as well. (2) For the evening, pull the hair over to one side. Put the hair in an elastic and part the hair into two sections. Twist the hair until you get to the ends and secure with another elastic. (3) Roll the rope braid into a bun and secure with a few bobby pins. (4) Add a little “bling” to complement your outfit like jeweled hair pins which can be found at most drug stores, like CVS. You can also add jewelry chains, shiny ribbons, or you can apply a glitter spray that will wash out of the hair.
2 TIP Always use a styling aid when curling the hair with an iron. The hair will hold the look longer and add a little bit of humidity resistance. For the twists and braids, the new sea sprays are really nice for adding some texture to the hair to make the twists thicker and hold better. We like Pro Design’s Finishing Spray for curling the hair, and we like Redken’s Sea Spray or a favorite is Cutler’s Volumizing Spray for added texture.
Thanksgiving brunch
(1) Split the hair in to two sections in the back. Start twisting the hair as you pull up. You may even want to flip your head over to facilitate the upward direction of the twist. Leave some of the ends untwisted and then secure twisted hair with an elastic just below the crown of the head. (2) Pin the twist against the head, leaving some ends out for added texture and a more casual look. (3) Lastly, pull out a few pieces of hair around the face to soften the look.

WHAT ARE YOUR CLOTHES REALLY SAYING ABOUT YOU? BY TRISH McCABE
Have you ever wondered what your outfit is saying to others?
Well if you haven’t, it is time to give it some thought and then take action. That’s what being resourceful is all about: being aware of what is working and what isn’t, finding solutions and taking the initiative to change… even in your closet! Your suit could be shouting “loser” when you want it to proclaim you the “winner”, and the cure could be as simple as basic style and color changes. Here is where the Feng Shui fun starts when it comes to how you are dressing.
The “little Black Dress”
Do you always say yes to the “safe” little black dress? It’s a staple in any wardrobe, right? Can go anywhere, right? Well the answer is yes…and no. First you must be aware of your intention when wearing it. Is the style appropriate for the occasion? Is it in alignment with your purpose and desired outcome?
The Change-Up… Elementally Speaking
At first glance, showing up for an interview with a Fortune 500 company in a pencil skirted, strapless black dress won’t work. But if you team it with a gray jacket and tasteful jewelry it works. Black is the color of water, one of the five elements in Feng Shui, and gray is the color of Helpful People. The water element is associated with the qualities of knowledge, depth and wealth. Wear this combination and you will be perceived as a helpful, intelligent, deep thinker that will attract wealth to the company. You will convey these qualities on a subconscious level
when the style and execution are in sync with your intention and the job description.
The Hidden Power Of Red
The flip side of this is you can take that same black dress and drop the gray jacket and tasteful jewelry. Replace it with big, bold colorful accessories in a combination of yellow, red, orange and purple. Now go and apply for a management position at any urban-funky art gallery and get the job. You will come across as edgy, unique, hip, intelligent, deep and a money magnet because … well you already know what black does and yellow is warm and friendly… good for attracting customers, purple is the color for wealth and prosperity and red… well, red definitely is the “attractor factor”… remember this when you want to sizzle! Oh, and it doesn’t even have to be seen to work… I’m serious… so run to Victoria’s Secret and grab that hot RED bra and matching undies and SMILE at your “little secret” as it does its magic! This works for everyone no matter what your day job is… attorneys love to wear this “cure” in the courtroom… ah the Power of Feng Shui at work! With the holiday season just around the corner… “Get Your Red On”… takes on a whole new meaning!

LEGAL ADVICE
The following Q&A will help you better understand your rights as a working woman. B Y T R AV I S R . H O L L I F I E L D
id you know that more than one-third of all charges filed with the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (“EEOC”) in the United States in 2010 were based on claims of employer retaliation? Also in 2010, and for the very first time since the EEOC began in 1965, retaliation charges became the #1 type of claim being investigated by the agency. Here in Florida, retaliation claims are also the #1 type of charge filed by employees with the Florida Commission on Human Relations (“FCHR”) comprising nearly 25% of all charges filed. Actionable employment retaliation can take different forms depending on the type of employer conduct being examined. In general, employers with more than 15 employees are prohibited from taking adverse actions against an employee who has “opposed” any practice made unlawful by federal or state anti-discrimination laws (Title VII and the Florida Civil Rights Act respectively) or because she has made a charge, testified, assisted, or participated in any manner in an investigation, proceeding, or hearing under such laws. These laws focus narrowly on retaliation relating to instances of alleged workplace discrimination and harassment based on a protected characteristic such as gender and race among others. For this type of retaliation claim, the employee does not have to actually prove that an instance of unlawful discrimination or harassment actually occurred in order to enjoy the protection of Title VII or the FCRA. A “reasonable belief” that the employer engaged in conduct prohibited by the statutes is all that is necessary. Further, an employee does not have to show that she was terminated in order for an employer’s conduct to be deemed an unlawful “adverse action.” Other types of actions such as a demotion, reduction in pay, and an unwanted transfer may be deemed unlawful as well. Even more subtle types of retaliatory actions, such as changing a working
mother’s shift which negatively impacts her child care responsibilities, may constitute retaliation depending on the circumstances. Another type of retaliation claim, which does not require the filing of an administrative charge with the EEOC or FCHR, arises under Florida’s private and public sector whistleblower statutes. For instance, the private sector whistleblower statute applies to all Florida employers with 10 or more employees and prohibits retaliation against employees who object to a “violation of a law, rule, or regulation” that pertains to the business of the employer. Unlike retaliation claims arising under Title VII and the FCRA, current judicial opinions suggest that an employee who suffers an adverse action for objecting

to workplace legal violations must prove that an actual violation occurred instead of having only a “reasonable belief” that a particular law was violated. Moreover, the legal violation being objected to must pertain to the business which may not necessarily include all types of legal violations such as employee theft of company property or workplace violence between employees. Many working women do not object to or oppose conduct prohibited by law in the workplace because they fear reprisal from their employers for “rocking the boat” or not being a “team player.” While the legal protections mentioned above may do little to prevent retaliation, they can be invoked in certain circumstances to ensure some reasonable compensation for economic and emotional injuries caused by an employer’s adverse actions. I was recently asked by human resources to give a statement about a situation at work where a co-worker of mine was being sexually harassed by our manager. I answered all the questions about what I saw and heard truthfully and told the investigating H.R. rep that I thought the manager’s behavior was disgusting and horrible. Two days later the manager told me he was going to “get me” for not standing up for him. What can I do?
Immediately report the manager’s comments to human resources or contact an experienced employment lawyer to help guide you through the process of protecting yourself. Although you may not have suffered an actionable adverse action under federal and state anti-retaliation laws yet, you can at least stand up for yourself as much as possible by notifying H.R. and creating a record of the manager’s conduct. I was recently fired after I complained to human resources about one of my co-workers who intentionally damaged my car in the company parking lot after we had a silly work related disagreement about her stealing my juice boxes out of the company refrigerator. I even have a witness who will swear that she saw the co-worker breaking my headlights. Can I sue the company for retaliation?
No. Whether brought under Title VII or the FCRA (pertaining to retaliation for objecting to workplace discrimination and harassment) or Florida’s private sector whistleblower law, it does not appear that you would have a retaliation claim. The alleged retaliation you describe was for objecting to a co-worker’s conduct that, while illegal, is neither discrimination-related nor pertaining to your employer’s business even though it occurred there. You can, of course, sue the co-worker individually for damage to your vehicle.

ATTORNEY FEES B Y D E D R A CU R T I S
Since 1995, LegalOne’s founder, Dedra Curtis, has had the privilege of assisting the public in the areas of estate planning, probate, real estate and corporations, just to name a few. Over the years, she has seen clients over-whelmed, wondering what to do, and simply needing someone to call to take care of their needs. We understand that clients want to be communicated with, knowing their matter is being handled in the most cost effective, efficient, and competent manner. For the past two years, it has been our mission to create a company that will truly help the public by offering non-lawyer services at a fraction of the cost. This is why LegalOne was created. If there is a matter that we as paralegals cannot handle, we refer to at least three attorneys in good standing with the Florida Bar to assist the client further. We handhold our clients every step of the way, no matter what the need is. LegalOne has the privilege of being Preferred Vendors for the Orange County Bar Association and members of the National Association of Entrepreneurs.
What We Do
LegalOne provides paralegal services in the areas of: • Estate Planning • Notary Services • Collections • Probate • Simplified/Uncontested Divorce • Corporations • Letter Writing Campaigns • Real Estate • Mediation • Form Assistance • Eviction / Foreclosure • Agreements • Small Claims • Immigration
For the General Public
There are times when matters are too simple and small for an attorney
to take. Sometimes, all the individual needs is help with filling out forms correctly, filing them with the court, and making sure it all happens in a timely manner. We can help! LegalOne provides all of the above services to the public (also known as “pro-se” clients). In the event we cannot help the individual, we have our Just Think One network of attorneys and professionals who can. Our goal is that you think of us with any of your legal needs… Just Think One: LegalOne.
For Attorney/Firm Outsourcing
Whether you are cutting down on paralegal help or you need extra hands on a matter, LegalOne can be an extension to your law firm. Our staff works with attorneys and law firms to help manage caseloads, so you have more time to generate more business while keeping the overhead cost low. We are not a staffing agency, so you will know our paralegals and can count on an excellent return product. LegalOne assists attorneys and law firms nationwide in many areas of law, including: • Estate Planning • Notary Services • Collections • Probate • Simplified/Uncontested Divorce • Corporations • Letter Writing Campaigns • Real Estate • Mediation • Form Assistance • Eviction / Foreclosure • Agreements • Small Claims • Trial Preparation From outsourcing to personal paralegal services we have tools and the people that can help you get whatever it is that you need done. Her motto: “Everyone needs a really great Paralegal.” Since 1995, she has taken her education, experience, and entrepreneurial spirit to set a new standard in the Paralegal profession and developed the concept to “just think one”… LegalOne. Legal One has an in-house attorney who is available to our clients at no charge to answer our client’s legal questions; in addition to several other attorneys of counsel that we may refer to for our client’s legal questions. We are not attorneys, we cannot give legal advice. However, we are a resource to the public for form assistance and referrals to attorneys and their law firms for cost effective, high quality, and confidential paralegal outsourcing. Gift A Different Kind of
for the Holidays Using your natural gifts to create a business
ou know what stinks about getting older? Not waking up to a huge pile of gifts under the Christmas tree. It is usually between the ages of 18 and 22 when that threshold is crossed. Aunt Barbara now sends a card without the 20 bucks, mom and dad pay for new tires or solely concentrate on the grandkids and your husband needs an actual list of “what would be good gift ideas.” You’ve officially parted with the adolescent gift receiving but have now fortunately graduated into a new class of gifting called “gift enlightenment.” “Gift enlightenment” is another term for your “ah-ha moment.” You’ve now arrived at a place in your life where you know your strengths and weaknesses, your talents, your passions and your determination. You have uncovered the gifts you possess and are beginning to put them into action. There is no greater gift in life than recognizing and using the gifts you were born with. Imagine if people did not put their gifts to use. We’d have no Starry Starry Night, we’d have no Sistine Chapel, we’d have no airplanes, no Broadway plays, and no cures for disease. The world would be a very dull place. Take a moment this holiday season and recognize your gifts and start to see how you can use them. The journey it will take you on will be like no other gift you’ve received. And don’t think you don’t have a gift. We all have them, from the gift of hospitality and organization to the gift of invention and creation. Need some inspiration? Check out the following pages of local women who’ve found their gifts and have taken them to the next level. By honoring their innate gifts to share with the rest of us, our world continues to become a more colorful, adventurous place. It truly is the gift that keeps on giving.

Lucille O’Neal and her son, Shaquille O’Neal
Brite: What passion inspired you to start the Odessa Chambliss Foundation? Lucille: In 1996 after the death of our mother Odessa (who died
from ovarian cancer), we as a family wanted to do something very special to honor our mother and keep her legacy alive. Since she was a nurse by profession and a true advocate for education. The passion for helping others inspired me along with my brother and sisters to develop this fund as a simple way to enhance the quality of another’s life. The primary mission of the Odessa Chambliss Quality of Life Fund is to help provide financial assistance for nursing and educational scholarships. See www.ocqualityoflifefund.com for additional details and information. Brite: When did you begin the journey of building this non-profit? Lucille: We began this journey shortly after our mother’s death in
1996. Our first official event was held in Newark N.J. in 1997 which enabled us to introduce the community to the Odessa Chambliss Quality of Life Fund and pay medical bills for a young cancer patient in the area. Brite: What motto kept you going to see your dream come to life? Lucille: When the doctors told us they had done all they could do
to medically help our mother we were crushed; however, when they informed us that “it would not be the quantity of years she had left to live but the quality of her life from this point on that would make a difference” it fueled a within us a certain passion to help others. This nurtured the will within us to strive to make a difference in the lives of so many people. Our mother lived her life helping others as much as she could. It was important to her that children have an opportunity to receive a quality education while pursuing their dream also. Brite: What advice would you impart to other women who want to start a non-profit? Lucille: I would advise any woman wanting to start a non-profit
organization to be serious as well as honest about the overall goals and mission of the organization. As you solicit financial support from others, know that a smile and a thank you will take you a long way! In all that you do, never forget that gratitude is something you can never show too much! Brite: What do supporters of the Odessa Chambliss Foundation love about its mission? Lucille: The supporters of the Odessa Chambliss Quality of Life

Fund love the fact that their money is used exactly for the reason it is solicited...to raise funds for nursing and education scholarships in addition to making donations to programs that enhance others’ lives in various ways. I have realized over the years that our supporters do appreciate the sincere and honest way we do business with them. There are no paid employees, and our long time supporters have now tapped into the vision along with the entire family. Brite: What piece of advice would you give to women who are ready to apply their gifts and talents in their own nonprofit venture? Lucille: I advise you to be passionate about what you are doing and
make it your life’s work, not a notion! You will soon come to know that it is indeed a blessing to be able to do something wonderful for someone else! After a while instead of an organization task or job...it all becomes a ministry! Be sure to grab a copy of Lucille’s inspirational book, Walk Like You Have Somewhere To Go.

Chandra Davis Drink Chia! DrinkChiaNow.com
Brite: What passion inspired you to create Drink Chia!? Chandra: Drink Chia! began as a home brew to help me train for
my first marathon. I’m not a really fast runner but like to run. I was looking for any good nutrition to give me a little edge to help with my training and recovery. I stumbled across Chia seeds and began experimenting. The motivation to take it to the next level was two things. First my boys, who are four and seven, would ask me everyday for the drink. I loved that I was giving them a low calorie and low sugar beverage with so much Omega-3s! Second, I just couldn’t find anything like this in any store. I really wanted to provide others with a product that was giving my family and me so much nutritional benefit. Brite: When did you begin the journey of building your business? Chandra: This all came together so organically with a lot of encour-
agement from friends and family. I hadn’t planned on this actually becoming a business until my brother Gideon Lewis, a local surgeon in Orlando, and our friend Mark Theisen, an avid surfer and personal trainer, had a serious discussion about pursuing this as a business venture. We started setting these amazing goals and casting a vision of how this product could positively impact so many people in an age of diabetes and obesity. We were excited and passionate and we realized we had to move forward. Our official journey began in August 2010. Brite: What motto kept you going to see your dream come to life? Chandra: “Life is an adventure to be embraced!” Brite: What advice would you impart to other women who want to create a business? Chandra: Do not give in to doubt, fear or other negative comments
from the peanut galleries in your life. If you believe in what you are
doing, move in passion and authenticity and good things will come! Also, utilize your contact base — you are probably 2 degrees of separation from all the information you need. Brite: What will customers love about Drink Chia!? Chandra: Drink Chia! is just a fun healthy alternative bever-
age. It only has 40 calories and 4 grams of sugar but packed with 880 mg of Omega-3, protective antioxidants, B complex and other vitamins and minerals. It is great for endurance, hydration, health and brain fuel. It is also sodium, preservative, cholesterol and gluten free! It is great for breakfast, before and after a workout or just as a “snack.” Plus it fits really nicely in lunch boxes. It also tastes really good! Brite: What piece of advice would you give to women who are ready to apply their gifts and talents in their own venture? Chandra: To pull the trigger and execute their plan ... continue to
work within their strengths and surround themselves with other talented people who are gifted in other areas. Have fun with it — when you work with your strengths it is hard not too ;) Drink Chia! is now available in all six area Chamberlin’s stores. Locations include Winter Park Village, Oviedo Marketplace, The Market Place on Dr. Phillips Blvd., the LA Fitness Shopping Center in Altamonte Springs, the Grove Park Shopping Center in Lakeland and the Town Corral Shopping Center in Kissimmee. Additional retail outlets for Drink Chia! include Track Shack, Healthy Foods USA, Hoover Market in Altamonte Springs and Dandelion Café. The drink will appear on shelves this month at Fresh Market in Longwood and in stores in Deland and New Smyrna.

Santa LaBellman LaBella Intimates labellaintimates.com
Brite: What passion inspired you to create LaBella Intimates? Santa: When I moved to the US almost 10 years ago. I had hard time
finding beautiful and comfortable lingerie I used to buy in Europe. If I found anything I liked in the US, it was very expensive or made only for small sizes. It was very hard to find something pretty that fit well, was comfortable, good quality and affordable. Especially if you are size D+, it is almost impossible to find pretty bras. For years, I would buy all my lingerie in Europe while I was visiting my family and bring it back to the US. I decided to start importing the bras that I love, and showed my customers that there are beautiful bras for all sizes. Brite: When did you begin the journey of building your business? Santa: I started LaBella Intimates in 2009 as a distributor and
wholesaler of lingerie from Eastern Europe. We have exhibited at major apparel and lingerie markets around the US and earned some loyal customers. After moving back to Orlando area from Texas where we had lived for five years, I was surprised to find that there are no lingerie boutiques anywhere in Central Florida. I saw a need for the service and opened my first retail boutique in March 2011.

Brite: What motto kept you going to see your dream come to life? Santa: To give women of Central Florida the opportunity to feel
beautiful and comfortable every day no matter their size. Brite: What advice would you impart to other women who want to create a business? Santa: Find your niche that will set you apart from everybody else.
Look for the opportunity in the right place and time. Believe in yourself and your passion. Brite: What will customers love about La Bella Intimates? Santa: At LaBella Intimates, we specialize in quality, fit and price.
We know our merchandise and can stand by our products. As we visit the actual factories, we order from and inspect the quality first-hand, we ensure the very best for our clients. Because we go directly to the source, we can offer our bras between $40 and $50. Compared to the department stores, they sell the same quality for over $100. In addition, we offer professional bra fitting for all our customers. Roughly 80% of the women wear a wrong size bra. Mostly it happens because in department stores there is no one who can assist you with proper fitting, so most of the women just settle with the bra that looks or feels the closest to fitting OK. In addition, many stores do not carry sizes larger than DD. At LaBella Intimates, we take the time to give our customers a personalized fitting. Our bras range in sizes from 30A to 42J giving

us the ability to fit almost all types and sizes. Plus, all LaBella Intimates customers can feel beautiful no matter what size they are. It is a life changing experience once you finally find a properly fitted bra. We also carry wide selection of sleepwear, shapewear and bridal lingerie. Starting September, we will be adding mastectomy products and also beautiful nursing bras for new moms to our collection. Brite: What piece of advice would you give to women who are ready to apply their gifts and talents in their own venture? Santa: Do your research and look for the right opportunity. Do not

dream I had in late 2005. Rocky, my inspiration and heart dog was 7 at the time and beginning to have hip issues. Looking for a career change, I acted on the dream, became certified in canine massage and started my business. Since then, I’ve continued to study other healing therapies, all with the goal of helping dogs. Rocky passed away in 2007 just after turning 9, but I believe his mission was complete, to get me going on this wonderful path of helping and healing dogs. Toby: Maxie was my heart dog and the inspiration for my desire to work and build something that promotes health and wellness for all dogs. As a result, I became certified in canine massage and started my business, DoggyFeelGood, in Northern NJ. Watching Maxie age, I wanted to expand my knowledge of natural options for maintaining the health and well being of all dogs. I realized this was my passion and felt so grateful that I finally found work that not only satisfied me, but benefited both dogs and owners alike. In 2009 we took the dream to a new level. Toby sold her house, quit her job and moved to Florida. Wanting to open an all encompassing canine health and fitness center featuring warm water therapy, we began looking for the right place to purchase. We found the location, and made the purchase offer in late Aug 2010. We closed on the financing loan in late March 2011, began construction, and as of Sept. 10, 2010 we’re finally open for business.

Pearls of Wisdom
If you don’t start the journey, it’s certain you won’t arrive. B Y E VA K R Z E W I N S K I C O - F O U N D E R / P R E S I D E N T, PEARLS FOR WOMEN
hen I think of Fall, I think of back to school and new beginnings. This also makes me wonder if I accomplished what I wanted to do this year. Or did I just make a plan of action or resolution and delay it for a rainy day? One Pearl of Wisdom I firmly believe in is “If you don’t start the journey, it’s certain you won’t arrive”. Well how true, how true! If you don’t put the keys in the ignition your car won’t move (and keyless push buttons don’t count). We all have gifts we were born with and talents that we have discovered and perfected. Unfortunately, many of them are not being utilized. Why is this? It is because of time management, busy schedules, laziness, problems, or even practice. Passion is a powerful tool that helps us achieve what we want and actually make us happy when we are doing what we love. It’s easy to say “I have no talents and no God given gifts”. Well stop right there sister, negative self talk is banned. We all are talented in our own special way. If you were to ask someone what their gift is, chances are their minds will immediately turn to Michelangelo sculpting David or Einstein unlocking the universe’s secrets with a simple equation. People tend to think of gifts in such extraordinary terms. They see a gift as an innate, exceptional talent, as something that few people in this life are born with. A gift isn’t just the product of the exceptionally talented, the successful, or the blessed. Quite the contrary, everyone has a gift. Some gifts are as bright as a thousand watts of light while others are hidden in stone. All are there, waiting to be revealed. To find your masterpiece, the life you were meant to live, you must look inside. It’s there,
waiting for you to clear away all that is not you. All the fears, beliefs, and wishes that others have imposed on you, the negative stories you tell about yourself, the defeatist attitude toward overcoming obstacles to your vision. Your gift lies in the place where your values, passions, and strengths meet. Discovering that place is the first step toward sculpting your masterpiece which is your life. Once you recognize your passion and know your value, you can then begin to reach out and implement your gifts. If you can’t be who you really are, then you’re just pretending to live your life. You have to be able to honestly express what you believe and show it with your actions and in your own words. Here are some simple steps to develop your natural talents. First, you must identify your talent by looking for naturally recurring patterns of thought, feeling, or behavior. Once identified, you must research and learn everything you can so that you have the knowledge, the facts and lessons learned to implement your talent. Lastly, hone in on your talent and make it a skill. Practice makes perfect but remember, it is more important to get it started than to get it perfect. Besides if it is truly your passion, you won’t want to stop once you have started your journey.

UNWRAPPED B Y elizabeth allen
Ah, the holidays. Just the thought invokes images of reindeer,
holly wreaths, Santa, and snow-covered roofs with red brick chimneys enticing the jolly man to commit serial home invasion. So what if we live in hot, humid Florida. The imagination isn’t restricted by barometers. Thank God. And then there’s GIFTS, GIFTS, GIFTS. Certainly the children expect them and the adults plan to buy them, regardless of the economy. As a youngster, I remember being very easy to please. Sure I wanted lots of presents, but there was always at least one that sent me into a catnip state of catatonia. At six, I was in orbit around my plush Chester O’Chimp whose mouth moved when you pulled the string and the adorable monkey spouted funny comments with a perfect Irish brogue. I was in orbit, that is, until my older brother opened his vinyl Creepy Skeleton and promptly shoved it in my face causing me to shriek and bolt with impressive speed for the nearest bathroom with a slam-able door. I was deathly afraid of skeletons and shrunken heads—two macabre images that my brother was determined to procure for the sole purpose of tormenting me. Eventually the sibling harassment morphed into heated argu-
ments over Thanksgiving dinner as we got older. But I digress… Gifts. Whether you get eight (one per night over Hanukkah) or the pink Schwinn with the sparkling vinyl banana seat (my personal favorite and a hard act to follow) or jewelry or a $500 gift card to Rich Hippie (hint hint), at the end of the day it’s just a thing. Money changes hands somewhere and you give a thing or you get one. Often the act of giving itself ends up being the more gratifying side of the exchange as jewelry eventually loses its luster and bike chains fall off too far from home. Yet we live in a very material society and one which measures the depth of love and affection with the cost and quality of the gifts we bestow. I was the quintessential material girl until my daughter at the age of ten accidentally broke an heirloom hourglass left to me by my father. It was completely shattered and as irreplaceable as my dad. Like so many of us often do, I associated this thing with my father and attached an inordinate amount of importance to it. Looking back, my knee-jerk, caustic reaction of “Look what you’ve done! That’s ALL I had left of my father! WAAAAAAA!” might have been a bit over indulgent. Certainly my frightened child—bracing for my wrath—was undeserving of the histrionics meted out. And then it hit me. Duh. The hourglass was not my father nor did his spirit reside in it. Dad did not die again when the hourglass broke. And he didn’t die again when his antique clock stopped working. Dad died only once, and I did not require whatever possessions or mementos he bequeathed upon me to keep his memory alive. The proverbial light bulb went off and I understood what was truly important—our relationships, experiences and memories. Certainly tangible gifts are lovely, but there’s a lot to be said for quality time with someone you love, treating your inner child to a trail ride along the shore, or a yummy massage without an agenda (or with…). Now, that’s not to say I was so swept up in my epiphanic rapture that I chucked all my worldly possessions to go the way of the hobo or to attain self-enlightenment. I’m still earthbound and I still like stuff; I just don’t endow it with more value than it deserves. If I seek Nirvana, I just buy one of their albums…

Have a question for
OUR BRITE GUY? Dear Brite Guy, My guy friend is dating a genuine gold-digger. She has got him wrapped around her finger but requires a ton of maintenance shelled out by him. How do I nicely tell him that he may get taken to the cleaners?
Dear Concerned “Friend”, Well, I have a sneaky suspicion that he is well aware of who she is and what she represents. Typically, it is obvious if a woman expresses more interest in a man’s wallet than the man himself. So now that we have established that, the more important question is why does he stay with her and why do you care? Maybe he wants her around for her looks, companionship, or simply for sex. Maybe he’s lonely, maybe he’s ugly, maybe he’s busy, and their arrangement suits him. I have a buddy who married a gold-digger and it has always irked me. Why? Because I hate seeing him used and believe that he deserves better. Unfortunately, I had to learn that I could not decide who was best for him, that responsibility is his and his alone. The only thing that I would suggest is that if you express your opinions or doubts in his choice, do not wager you friendship because he may choose her over you. Dear Brite Guy, The past two holidays have been stressful due to an unexpected turn with our finances.. And regardless of everyone “keeping it small” this year, the rest of the family always breaks that rule and we end up looking like the bad guys. How do we compromise without having another stressful, unpleasant holiday?
Dear Happy Stressmas Day, Considering that we are currently in the thick of the worst economic climate since the Great Depression, stress due to money, or lack thereof, seems ever-present. Job security is at an all time low and the price of everything continues to rise. We have entered into a new realm of financial accountability, of which many people are reluctant to embrace. You, however, have decided to be proactive and formulate a plan of attack before the battle…kudos to you. My favorite and also the easiest way to keep your hubby and yourself sane during the holidays is a good ol’ fashioned Chinese Gift Exchange. If you don’t know what
that is, punch yourself in the face (or google it). The immediate benefit is that each person only has to provide one gift, as opposed to shopping for the entire Brady Bunch. Most people set a price range for the gift that all could afford. Personally, I would encourage you to switch it up a bit and make it a Kerblakiztan Garbage Exchange. Grab something hideous that you have always wanted to get rid of (the puke green afghan your great aunt Helen knitted 100 years ago) or create something from household junk (carving a unicorn out of an old hurricane candle), and let the hilarity ensue. Families that have made a tradition of large gift exchanges may be hesitant initially, but once you explain the financial benefit, they should come around. Congratulations soldier, you have removed some of the stress from the Holidays, saved some money, and bonded with your family — mission accomplished.

“Finally! I can eat pizza again!” shouts yet another happy new customer and raises her glass to Tolla’s Italian Deli & Cafe. This epiphany has transformed many once-saddened, gluten-free foodies. nd thanks to Tolla’s Italian Deli & Cafe, all gluten-free diners can now enjoy the best of both worlds. The term “gluten” has been thrown around a lot in the last few years. Some people are diagnosed with a gluten allergy or sensitivity, and others experiment with a gluten-free diet. While gluten sensitivities are nothing new, they’re more understood today and, as a result, are being diagnosed more. What is gluten? To set the record straight, gluten isn’t really a bad thing. It’s simply a composite of two proteins and is naturally found in field grains such as wheat, barley and rye. Why is it hard to find gluten-free products in restaurants? Because all-purpose flour is a kitchen staple in restaurants, and guess what is in all-purpose flour ... a blend of high- and low-gluten wheats. So how is it that Tolla’s is able to provide gluten-free Italian meals? Gary Tolla, owner and chef of Tolla’s Deli & Cafe, goes above and beyond the all-purpose flour kitchen staple. He seeks out the best wheat-free flours for most of his Italian dishes. And not only are they gluten-free, they are delizioso! From their famous baked ziti and stuffed chicken tolla, to their tasty meatballs and stuffed shells, you won’t go wrong with any choice. Don’t forget to give the gift of gatherings and happy tummies this holiday season and bring Tolla’s to your office

ESTATE Dina, our expert real estate advisor, is constantly up on the hottest real estate trends in Central Florida. Whether it is your first home, second or investment property, be the first to have Dina help you snag up a gem in one of these areas this fall.
Why It’s Hot: Downtown Orlando has become the “it” place to live for young professionals, attorneys, doctors, families, you name it. The area has grown tremendously with the addition of the Amway Center and all of the businesses that have opened. Imagine being able to walk to Publix, 7 Eleven, the movies, Magic Games and concerts, countless restaurants, and any kind of nightlife you desire. Where else can you enjoy a wine flight and cheese plate at 101 Eola; tapas, freshly made sangria, and live Flamenco music at Ceviche; and then end the night at the 80s music favorite, the Lodge. Did I mention this is all from walking distance from your luxury high rise condo where you can view the city lights every night? In downtown Orlando, there is always something to do. Every 3rd Thursday, there is an Art Walk where you can visit all of the new exhibits at the art galleries downtown like CityArts Factory and the Gallery at Avalon Island. Every Sunday, there is a Farmer’s Market from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and often there are festivals on the weekends that families and friends can enjoy. The new Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts has started construction and is slated to be finished in a few years. This will only add more value to the downtown Real Estate. You will then be able to walk to a Broadway play or a ballet! Downtown Orlando is thriving with excitement and culture. There is something for everyone. new generation of style has officially made its way to Central Florida. J. Hilburn, the brand that focuses on custom dress shirts and other men’s apparel, is quickly replacing old wardrobes from college students to CEOs. “What our business does is make guys look better,” says Veeral Rathod, who founded the company in 2007 with Hil Davis. “Guys don’t like shopping because they are too busy or they don’t know what to buy. Our business makes that easy on them. We provide the clothing, the outfit and the Parsons style for customers.” Veeral Rathod and Hil Davis were working on Wall Street when they first bought custom dress shirts. While they loved the fit, feel and style of custom shirts, they didn’t understand why they were so expensive. They studied the men’s clothing market, and discovered that not only was the supply chain inherently inefficient but also that consumers were being stuck with the bill. Veeral and Hil saw an opportunity to build a new type of company for men, and the vision for J. Hilburn was born. Drawing inspiration from direct sales, they found a way to bring luxury clothing to men at historically low prices and create a clothing brand that was about the individual and accessible to anyone. “We wanted to get the brand in front of customers,” said Rathod. “We decided to take the mass market but localize it and customize it.” J. Hilburn has a growing salesforce of 800 personal style advisors who operate throughout the United States. Style advisors meet with clients at their homes and offices, record measurements, offer style advice and help create the ultimate wardrobe for the cus-

tomer. From custom shirts, pants and suits to accessories, jeans, sweaters and jackets, every man’s closet is transformed into personal perfection. J. Hilburn cuts out the brick and mortar, which removes the retail markup and sells it directly instead. But they don’t skimp on the quality. The product is made from the same mills and factories as other high-end luxury items. For example, a Zegna shirt costs $35 to make, is sold to a retailer for $125, and then sells for $325 at Neiman Marcus. J. Hilburn goes to the same Italian mills, the same factories, adds a few personal touches and sells it directly, for less than a third of that. Once the client has his first fitting and receives his first shirt, his measurements are saved in the system and he can reorder and build new looks anytime on the company’s ecommerce site, JHilburn.com. Because of this convenient addition, the company is projecting $20 million in revenue this next year. “We are essentially building three companies,” says Rathod. “Our primary company is building a luxury brand. Next we are building a business that is redefining direct
sales where it is modernized and professional. Lastly, we are building a person-to-person professional network making our customer experience better than anyone else.” Let’s hear what some of our business leaders in the community are saying about the J. Hilburn experience…

Top 5 Business Strategies
FOR A SUCCESSFUL MODEL BY RO MARTINEZ
While it looks easy to be a working model, the modeling field is very competitive and requires much hard work. A model must be multi-dimensional. She prepares for each booking or job by spending hours on grooming, wardrobe, traveling and more. Michelle Owens, stylist and owner of Wicked Threads said, “First impressions are so important. If you have a great outfit that looks professional and makes you feel confident—wear it! You want that confidence to shine through in any interview.”
Top Five Strategies
1. Appearance 2. Punctuality 3. Research 4. Honesty 5. Professionalism
Simplify your beauty routine.
If you’re on time, you’re late.
Research before an audition.
slogan is, If you’re on time you’re late. Models are expected to arrive 15 minutes early to allow for signing in. Punctuality is essential and displays your reliability.
Research
Appearance
Natural beauty is a small part of one’s appearance; a model must also rely on current and stylish clothing. A good sense of style depends less on how much you spend and more on proper fit and how you coordinate and accessorize. Grooming is important because clients are unwilling to do business with someone who is unkempt. Simplifying your grooming routine will help get you out the door looking your best. Crystal Lockinour, hair and makeup artist said; “With advanced products and tools, creating a beautiful look is easier than ever.”
Punctuality
Being late to an audition can cost the model the booking. An industry

Having more knowledge means having an advantage. Research before an audition will help a model know the targeted audience, how to select the proper wardrobe, how to pronounce the name of the prospective client and how much energy is expected.
Honesty
There are models who lie about their measurements (reducing them) and their height (adding inches) to impress an agent or a client. Once your credibility is questioned, regaining trust is very difficult.
Professionalism
A true professional has the proper tools and demonstrates the above attributes. Models must have the right photos, training and a good talent agent. They utilize tools that also apply to many other industries: makeup, cell phone, computer, printer, luggage, proper clothing and reliable transportation. Focusing on all of the fine details can seem overwhelming, but attention to these details aid in making that positive first impression, thus bringing in more business. A good reputation is worth its weight in gold. Other important business strategies are: mentoring, organizational skills, communication, networking and having a good business plan.

Brand “You”:
WHAT DOES IT SAY ABOUT YOU? BY CHERYL MCDUFFIE JAMES ou walk into a room and join a conversation of colleagues as they discuss the newly appointed VP of the department. As you listen to the exchange of dialogue you hear various adjectives from “charismatic,” “engaging,” “compassionate,” “resultsoriented,” “accountable,” “flexible,” and “driver.” You begin to envision someone who sounds like a strong leader who delivers results. It appears that the right person got the job. As we enter another joyous holiday season my mind began to reflect on my first thoughts whenever I receive an elegantly wrapped gift. Honestly, I immediately think, “there is something really good inside this box”! Why would my first thoughts lead me to believe that just because the wrapping paper and bow are so attractive, that the contents of the box will follow suit? Welcome to the power of “branding.” The year was 1997 and one of the most well-known business gurus, Tom Peters, introduced the concept of “Me Inc.” Mr. Peters has since been credited as the creator of the “personal branding” concept. As time has evolved and consumers have demanded a stronger value proposition for the goods and services they purchase, individuals and companies alike have begun to invest heavily in the concept of “branding.” As individuals this concept lends itself to the development of “Brand You.” What does your “brand” say about you? If you can’t list at least 3-5 bullet points that describe the attributes and characteristics that your words and actions display, then it’s time to put some thought into this very important question. What is personal branding? Basically, “personal branding is the process of displaying the key attributes and characteristics that make you unique while providing the desired value proposition that resonates with your target audience in a consistent, authentic and deliberate way.” Personal branding has become increasingly important as more of the covenant opportunities have decreased while the competition continues to increase. In an age where social media provides
increased ease of obtaining facts and figures with just a few key strokes or taps on your touch screen, it is crucial to your success that you began the work of developing and executing on “Brand You.” Here are a few suggestions on how to begin the “Brand You” development process: 1. Make a list. Set aside time when you can reflect on specific attributes used to describe you most often. These can be derived from performance appraisals, friends, family and professional colleagues, as well as your knowledge of yourself. List all that come to mind. 2. Rank them. Your list may consist of three or 30 descriptors. Rank these key attributes and characteristics to develop your “top 5” using the following methods: • How authentic are the descriptors? Do they really reflect who I am most of the time or who I would like to be? • Which descriptors are used to describe me most often? Whether verbally or written. Personally or professionally. • Which descriptors are most relevant to my value proposition? Are these best aligned with my goals and objectives? 3. Begin the “branding” process. Now that you have identified your top 5 descriptors it’s time to develop a plan of action to ensure that everything about you delivers on your brand. This includes your social media network, appearance, interactions with others, as well as performance. “Brand You” is not a reflection of who you “desire” to be, but who you “are.” Your brand can only help you reach your goals and/or objectives if it is a true reflection of the best that you have to offer your clients, employers, employees, and other stakeholders. Anything short of this will result in the failure to deliver on your “Brand Promise.” The identification and delivery of your authentic self which displays the value proposition that informs everyone who you are as well as your capabilities in a consistent message visually, written, or verbally will ensure that the elegant wrapping paper and bow that ordains your box is consistent with the contents inside. “Brand you” delivered!

How to generate business
USING LINKED IN BY LINDA BARNBY
LinkedIn is revered as the hub where you can generate busi-
ness for your company with no marketing budget needed. There is an art to connecting with business professionals that differs in strategy and technique from engaging with people on Facebook or Twitter. LinkedIn is where business professionals congregate to connect on a professional level. Whereas it’s acceptable to chat about how your parrot taught your dog to “sit” on Facebook, that kind of banter is not so welcome on LinkedIn. There are some simple steps that make connecting through LinkedIn for fun and profit easy. First, let’s make sure our goals are crystal clear. Your goals on LinkedIn are to: • Spark interest • Be memorable • Encourage engagement Did you spot what is missing from that list? What is noticeably lacking here is the goal of “impressing the socks off your reader by listing a mile-long treatise of your accomplishments, awards and accolades.” It is such a temptation to throw the kitchen sink at your reader! Resist, I say! Of course, you want people to know some of your accomplishments and work history. But consider the dangers of overwhelm. You want to be approachable and likable. You want to avoid coming off like some stiff, self-absorbed, personality-less icon whom nobody wants to get to know. The one thing not to do in your LinkedIn profile is to be stiff and formal. And above all, avoid being “hypey” or “salesy.” The people who are going to read your profile are golden. They are your prospective customers, your future referral sources and your
future sources of glowing recommendations. Talk to them through your profile in a conversational way as you would to a future business acquaintance and friend. The readers of your LinkedIn profile are real people just like you. And just like you, they enjoy being entertained, enlightened and engaged. Imagine yourself at a networking function, mini-plate piled high with finger foods in one hand and your beverage of choice in your other hand. (Or maybe you are one of those super-coordinated networkers who has mastered the art of balancing glass, plate and napkin in one hand, leaving your right hand free for shaking hands, gesturing while talking and passing out business cards.) A close business friend has just introduced you to a friend of hers and it’s time to swap a few choice tidbits of cogent information for the purpose of getting to know each other better. So what do you do? Rattle off your list of accomplishments and work history? I think not. You are going to be real and inject some personality and a touch humor, if you can pull it off. In your conversation (as in your LinkedIn profile!) you are going to: Spark Interest by sharing a few of your interests, and, in an entertaining way, share your philosophy about life or business. Be Memorable by sharing an interesting or funny anecdote or unique experience in hopes of finding common ground with your new friend via a human interest story (yours). Encourage Engagement by refraining from boasting or appearing self-absorbed and instead providing enough snippets of information about yourself to provide openings for your friend to connect and share themselves with you. To generate business on LinkedIn, be real and be giving. Update your status frequently with useful tidbits of news and advice and join a few groups, just as you would do in real life. Engage in and start discussions in groups with these principles in mind and you will be richly rewarded with new friends and new loyal customers and fans.

THE HOT LIST
HILTON ORLANDO We’re pretty sure we’ve found the hottest staycation spot in O-Town. Everything about the new Hilton Orlando is off the charts hot-tastic. Hence, this is why we are featuring only this hotel and its incredible amenities on our hot list this season. If I were you, I’d forego the gifts and book an incredible weekend staycation at one of the top spots in all of Central Florida, the Hilton Orlando.
The Service
No wonder this resort is in the top 5 on TripAdvisor.com. You couldn’t ask for a better, more professional and friendly staff. Want to get the most out of the day and the service?…
The Cabanas
Reserve yourself a poolside cabana. Offering a private and pampered setting for guests seeking the utmost from their stay, these cabanas are complete with ceiling fans, WIFI, 37-inch LCD HD TVs with PC inputs and USB ports, mini refrigerators, two chaise lounges, a small table and privacy curtains. Set up camp and order food and drinks whenever you want. Don’t forget to take a break and visit the lazy river. Adorned with fountains, waterfalls and water cannons, its design is reminiscent of the lazy streams that wind through Central Florida’s landscapes.
The Food
OMG… the food. The Hilton Orlando is redefining hotel dining. Even if you aren’t a guest for the night, the drinks and food at both David’s Club and Spencer’s are definitely worth the trip. More than 85 percent of the food made onsite is locally grown. Enjoy one of the city’s most distinguished steakhouses, Spencer’s, for steaks and chops. And the new swanky lounge at Spencer’s features live music from the area’s top jazz musicians, making it a great choice for after work happy hours and special occasions. Want something a little more casual? Check out the unique gastro-pub fare at David’s Club Bar & Grill, which also boasts an extensive list of craft beers and scratchmade cocktails. Our favorite? The Market Martini made of Hendrick’s Gin, muddled cucumber, fresh pressed apple cider, squeezed lemon and a cucumber slice. Combine this cocktail with the Poke Tacos, stuffed with Yellowfin Tuna, onion shoyu, cucumber and sweet onions. Calling all football fans! When the game day sun becomes too much to handle, relocate your tailgate to David’s Club. With large LCD TVs, pool tables and overstuffed chairs, you’ll be able to watch that final winning drive in comfort and style.
