I know, weird opening question, but don’t you? I love food, or rather, I love all that accompanies food. From my kitchen to the restaurant table, I do most of my relationship building around food. Let’s face it, the majority of relationship building is centered around food. From summer barbeques and tailgating to intimate porch parties and memorable family dinners, food is the nucleus of our social gatherings. It’s the communal table that bonds us. We bring comfort food to sick friends. We encourage potlucks for casual gatherings. BYODs (bring your own drink) always mix up the menu at summer parties. Food is really just an easy vehicle to get to know each other better. So in this issue, we are encouraging just that — enjoy your food and all that accompanies it. Take advantage of a little more free time this summer and reconnect with friends and family. Check out our feature in this issue with Chef Isabella and her mission about Food With Passion. She also shares some easy recipes and Italian cooking secrets. Not in the mood for cooking? Invite your friends out to some of the best restaurant porches in all of Central Florida. These featured environments will definitely aid in great memory making with views of some of the best sunsets in Florida. Take a deep breath this season, relax, sit back and enjoy the flavors, the company and the memories that the table has to offer.

Just have some fun with fashion this season! It’s Florida — we can get away with almost anything. Just be creative, stay up on the trends and don’t be afraid to try something new!

Want these trends but can’t afford the lot? There is a simple formula to looking hot now and still having some cushion in your wallet for the future. Brite Magazine interviewed Rebekah Barsch, director of retirement markets at Northwestern Mutual, at the National Association of Women MBAs (NAWMBA) leadership conference held at Disney Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando. Her advice for shopping? “Before you go shopping, get the price point of the item/s. Then for every dollar you put down for today’s outfit, put down that same amount for the future outfit and save it.” Barsch expressed the importance of planning for financial security, and offered a series of action items to help women stay financially fit from now until retirement and beyond. Tailgating Fashion Trends What’s one of the best parts of going back to school? Tailgate season! Woohoo! If you live in the state of Florida, you are very familiar with the excitement around tailgating. Time and age are displaced between alumni and student as they cheer in harmony. Dad and son temporarily transcend adversity and unite under orange and blue, garnet and gold, orange and green or black and gold. Traveling packs of mothers, daughters and friends bond and socialize with home team and visitor alike. It’s a weekend full of bonding, memories and just plain fun. So why not look your best when hopping the parking lots this season? Walk on Water gives some great style advice for this season’s tailgating trends. Incorporate your school’s colors with these hot looks and viola! you’ve transformed into the tailgating trendsetter. Back to school has never been so fun… Dresses: Its so nice to see the dress make such a huge comeback this year! For fall and winter the waist has returned! Whether on a belted swing coat, a curvy dress or pencil skirt, the emphasis is on the waist. The fitted shift style dress provides a much-needed antidote to all the trapeze shapes of this past summer. The seriously girlie frock could be on its way out. The dress for fall is sexier and edgier — but not skin tight — so dresses will remain comfortable. Colors: The colors that are in this fall and winter will be all the fab jewel tones. Plus loads and loads of grey, and black holds its place
as a front runner on the runways. Here is just a taste of some wonderful rich colors you will see this season — purple is big. Other colors: sapphire blue, claret red, maroon, deep golds and rusts, chocolate brown, eggplant. Jeans: Jeans, jeans and more jeans... It appears that most popular designers are betting that women want a jean with a bit higher waist and closer fit at the leg, such as the straight leg, boot cut, and the skinny jean. Madonna has started the new higher waist jean in England, and this trend is quickly making its way across the pond. It might be nice to not have to worry about the dreaded muffin top! Shoes: This fall’s hottest looks: the low-heel riding boot. These boots are a sight for sore eyes. The forgiving round-toed boots scream something even better — comfort ! They don’t look half bad either. This particular shoe fashion looks great with a short little dress or over some tucked in skinny jeans. Accessories: Bangles, bangles and more bangles! Bangle bracelets are becoming increasingly popular. Make sure when you buy — make them jeweled metal bangles so you can really sparkle. Designed for evening dresses and day-to-day wear. Don’t know where to start? Join us August 4 at Walk on Water’s two locations for a kick-off tailgating fashion event. Get your updated wardrobe with your team colors ready for an exciting year!

FENG SHUI BY TRISH McCABE
What is Feng Shui Really?
Every culture and species worldwide has and practices some form of “Feng Shui”…the art of staying safe, being in harmony with nature and attracting what we desire. We refer to this only as Feng Shui because it is the version with the reputation, documentation and the best visibility in the media. Newsweek called it “mystical yet practical.” Feng Shui is a multilayered way of looking at, acting on and empowering: your mind, body, spirit, home, workplace, business and more. Feng Shui is a very effective way to look at and deal with all aspects of life. The definition of a resourceful person is “someone who is capable of dealing with any situation in life.” Feng Shui serves double duty when it comes to being resourceful. Having the ability to apply Feng Shui is “resource” and definitely something you want in your resource bag. The more you have in that bag the more resourceful you become.
Accidental Feng Shui… The Red Dress
Long before I had ever heard of Feng Shui, I had this really great tomato red dress with tiny white polka dots. I really loved that dress and would occasionally wear it on job interviews. Being a full-time Psychology major at the University of Florida and a working single mother of two, it was important to “get” the job. I began to notice that every time I wore “The” red dress I was hired. It didn’t take this girl long to realize that something was going on there. I wasn’t quite sure what it was, but I knew I had discovered a reliable way to beat the competition for any job I applied for: Self-empowerment 101. Later I would learn that what was going on, was “Good” Feng Shui at work. Yes, Feng Shui! Why? Because color and the effect it has on you and those around you is one of many layers of Feng Shui. Red attracts
positive energy and makes you stand out in a crowd! It has other effects too… but we’ll save those for another time… you’ll like it so come back for more!
You’ve Already Had A Feng Shui Experience You have whether you were aware of it, or not. Remember walking into

a friend’s home for the first time wondering, “What was she thinking? Who is she anyhow?” Or a hotel or conference room where you thought, “Wow, this is beautiful!” “I love this!” The feelings you get when you first enter a space is an indication of the Feng Shui. When you feel relaxed and comfortable, like you could stay there forever… that’s “Good” Feng Shui! When you want to run out the door… “Bad” Feng Shui. We experience this with people too. You know, the ones you meet and you feel like you have known them forever… in a good way, or those that make the hair on your arms stand on end…. Stay away.
What’s Wrong With Mystical?
Some say Feng Shui is mystical. There is too much noise about something being “mystical.” Have you thought about exactly what that word means? Forget the hype and the accompanying emotional response. Mystical quite simply means, “with a divine meaning beyond human understanding” “mysterious or difficult to understand”… Seriously wouldn’t that be true of everything at some point in time? What about cars, TV and landing on the moon? How about the microwave oven? Explain that to a caveman.
Discovering The Feng Shui-Science Connection
I found out about Feng Shui while doing research on the effects of color, light and sound on the human brain for a paper my senior year in college. Deep in the library at UF, there was a dusty old book with crumbling pages that was full of information on my subject as well as a reference to something called “Feng Shui” that originated in China and literally means “wind/water”. Wind means air and breath and water of course, we can not live without. This was very serious stuff indeed! I was intrigued because Feng Shui was used to balance and/or change the energy of a person, home or business. I was amazed at how the little bit that I read on Feng Shui was directly related to the scientific studies I was researching on color, light and sound. It was a definite “light bulb” moment for me. There was something to all this, as well as the science to back it up. Think Einstein. Quantum physics.
The “E” word
By now you’ve probably noticed how I snuck in the “E” word in the paragraph above… you know energy! That dreaded misunderstood word. Personally I think that poor “energy” has, quite unfairly, been given a bad rap. Especially since it takes energy to perform every scientific task known to man: chemical, biological, geological, and cosmology. Sometimes people get squeamish when it comes to “human” energy. But I ask you, what is it that allows you to walk, talk, jog, play sports and dance? Energy! What is electricity? Energy! What is a calorie? Energy! It’s a measurement of energy first defined by Nicolas Clément in 1824. All biological processes in our bodies require energy that is then transformed into other forms of energy. Like the smile I have on my face right now as I write this. We are energy beings living in a universe of energy. It is ok to refer to our energy. We are made of energy and we give off energy and our energy affects the energy of others and the places where we live, love and work. See it’s not so weird or scary after all… it is logical, real and scientific. How we choose to use our energy and the energy around us is where Feng Shui comes in.

Ask the Expert:
LEGAL ADVICE
The following Q&A will help you better understand your rights as a working woman. B Y T R AV I S R . H O L L I F I E L D
According to a 2010 report prepared by the Research Institute
on Social and Economic Policy on behalf of the Florida Wage Theft Task Force, wage theft continues to grow in Florida during these tough economic times. Wage theft is where employers try to cut their operating costs by violating federal and state wage protection laws that are intended to ensure payment to employees for work performed. Wage theft is an umbrella term used to describe a variety of employer misdeeds including but not limited to paying workers below the state and federal minimum wages (or not at all), not paying for overtime hours worked, forcing employees to work off-the-clock, altering employees’ time cards, and misclassifying employees as independent contractors to avoid paying minimum wages or overtime pay. The report indicated that the majority of alleged wage theft occurred in the hotel and restaurant businesses. Other employers with high instances of wage theft include the construction industry and — in an industry dominated by working women — the health and social assistance professions which includes nurse’s aides, home health care workers, and other health aides working in various different types of health care facilities. Many employees who suffer from wage theft worry that their employers will just terminate them if they object to being shorted their earned wages. If an employee is fired for objecting to wage theft, this is considered unlawful retaliation prohibited by both state and federal law. A woman harmed in this way by her employer should absolutely stand up for herself and seek out an attorney experienced in handling wage theft and retaliation claims. By the way, if you haven’t already heard, Florida’s minimum wage was increased as of June 1, 2011 to $7.31 per hour. Employees who receive tips as compensation saw their minimum wage increase to $4.29 per hour.
I recently resigned from a job that I hated mostly because my boss was just a total jerk and life is just too short to put up with his nonsense. The problem is he will not pay me my last check because he is just mad that I quit. Can I do something to get my money? This is a very common problem when there are bad feelings
between employers and employees at the end of a working relationship, regardless of who ended it. Without question, you have the right to receive your last paycheck assuming you actually worked hours for which you were not compensated. Really the only question is whether you want to try and get your check through formal legal means or other more informal methods. Filing litigation certainly gets an employer’s attention and puts it on the clock to file a formal response. However, many times an experienced wage theft attorney can correspond with your former employer and explain the consequences of not immediately tendering the wages owed which can result in a quick resolution of the matter without the cost and hassle of going to court. I recently complained to my local human resources rep about my manager telling us to clock out at the end of our shifts but then go back to work right away for at least two more hours. After I complained, my manager immediately stopped doing that but now he is very hostile towards me and he no longer lets me work my normal shift which ended in time for me to pick up my daughter at day care. I complained about that also but nothing has happened. What can I do? You present a classic case of unlawful wage
theft and retaliation. The law requires your employer to pay you for all hours worked. Moreover, if you can prove that your manager knew or should have known that what he was doing was in violation of the law, you may be entitled to an amount equal to the unpaid wages you seek. This doubling of your unpaid wages in known as “liquidated damages.” Finally, you should be aware that unlawful retaliation may occur where the terms and conditions of your employment are negatively impacted after you have objected to your employer’s wage theft. If there is no legitimate business reason to justify the changing of your shift to one that interTravis R. What Your Kids Think About
DIVORCE BY DEDRA CURTIS
I WILL NEVER FORGET THE DAY when my mother very bluntly asked me (the 6 year old child), “Do you want to live with Mommy or Daddy?” I could not understand why this was happening or why I was being put in the middle of such a grown-up situation. The rest of the story is vague in my mind today, but I will always remember that moment in my childhood. What happens when we as adults decide to dissolve a marriage when there are children involved? There has been a great deal of research on the impact of divorce on children. While there is growing agreement among researchers about the effects of divorce, there is still a lot we don’t know. We have not reached a point that we can specify about the impact of divorce on a specific child. What we do know is that the impact will vary with each child depending on the child’s age, gender, maturity, psychological health and whether or not other supportive adults are able to be a regular part of their lives. Would you do the following? Let’s think before we act… Rely on your children for emotional support? You take care of yourself. Spare your children that additional emotional burden and responsibility. Manipulate, pressure or lie in order to make your children take sides? Sadly, parents sometimes use their children as pawns to get back at one another. The hatred, hurt and resentment of each other overshadows the love they have for their children. Expose children to your arguments, abusive behavior or conflicts? Always remember that your children view their family as a supportive, loving unit. Having arguments and abusive behavior in their presence will obscure their view of what a family should be. Despite everything that is happening, our children should feel that they can trust and confide in us. Tell your child how he or she should feel? Don’t argue or become angry with your child if they disagree with how you believe they should be feeling. Your child is an individual and may react differently than what you expect. A perspective from what kids say: “If you don’t love Daddy anymore and I look like him… then do you not love me?”
“I feel like I’m a bystander. Like they know how I feel, but they don’t care.” “I am the reason why Mommy and Daddy are fighting”. “We are not your messengers. If you have something to say to my other parent, tell them yourself.”
Did you know?
• Statistically, girls tend to handle divorce better and have fewer serious problems than boys. • More than one third of Fortune’s “50 Most Powerful Women in Business” have a stay at home man. • Eighty percent of divorced men and 75 percent of women remarry whether or not they have children, and most do so within three years. Why do we have to make things so complicated? Divorce is never an easy process. We need to allow ourselves time to heal. There is such a thing as a Simplified Uncontested Divorce. Three months vs. years in court. There is something to be said about resolving things amicably. Life is all about give and take, assessing the situation and then making decisions accordingly. We need to take that step back and look at what is in the best interest of our children, be true role models and show our children that we still love them unconditionally. It is not necessary for a mother and father to be “in love” or romantically involved to be good parents and to raise healthy children. We all need to remember that our kids are our future. We want to give them the best opportunities to be the best that they can be emotionally, socially, and educationally. We at LegalOne are here for you. It does not cost anything to call us. We are your resource for all your needs.

ommunity. What images does that word invoke for you? That might depend on where you were reared. Whether you started out in a small town, large urban city, house in the burbs, apartment building—or even if you were raised in a barn, you might think of community as the neighborhood that surrounds you. What about how you were raised…If your parents were products of the hippie-free-love generation, then the idea of flowers and sharing everything may come quite naturally. Were you part of a small, isolated family? You may tend to keep to yourself; believing that recycling plastics is all you should do to contribute to your district. What about a faith-based upbringing? Then you probably see opportunities in your community to help those less fortunate. What if you were raised by wolves? In that case, you know the best steakhouses in town and your manners are atrocious. But does location and heritage really determine how we interact with our neighbors? For some, community may mean nothing more than local recognition. Does your mail person greet you by your name? Still, for others, community is a sense of cohesion, belonging to something intimate yet bigger than the self. More often than not, this is exclusively achieved through religious affiliations. Technology and mobility have had a weighty impact on the communes of old. Families rarely live in the same neighborhood anymore, let alone same state. Yet, there are still Amish pockets where community is crucial and barn-raising is still high entertainment. Members of these generations rarely roam any further than a one mile radius from where they were born. Ah…simple abundance at its best. Sounds infinitely appealing, right? Just remember that with limited range of transportability comes a restricted gene pool… Uh huh…if it’s all the same to you, I’ll wander. Now we’re all separate. Nearest of kin is thousands of miles away. Even graveyards, which were called yards because they were part of the family property, kept our dearly departed loved ones onsite. Now we send them to gated subdivisions with expensive landscaping and
koi ponds. I’m surprised cemeteries haven’t installed grave-cams so relatives can visit from afar at the click of a mouse. Hey, if you have Photoshop, you can even leave virtual flowers on a jpeg of their gravesite. But wait, won’t your loved one get lonely if you don’t actually, physically, pay a visit? No problem. Friend them on Facebook. But I digress. We can see the toll changing times has had on us, but how has this growing loss of community affected our kids? While we’re busy with work, life, and all it entails, our children stare at their computer screens, televisions, cell phones and hand-held devices. Their muscles atrophy just as sure as if they were veal in a crate. BUT, they have their own community and they’ll tell you so. It’s online. And talking on the phone? Talking? R U kidding? It’s not just basic social skills that have suffered amongst the Echo boomers—there are some basic basic skills that have been lost. I know of a 15 year old who asked her mother to address an envelope for her. When her mom told her to do it herself, she said “I don’t know how.” WTF? Good lord, she can pair a cell phone with Bluetooth in a car, but if an address doesn’t have a dot com, dot org or dot net at the end, she is helpless. I sometimes dream of a simpler time—where horse-drawn carriages traversed dirt roads, men wore nice hats and everyone knew how to play piano otherwise there was no music in the home. I long for the close-knit community where we all helped in a pinch and no one went hungry. There was one doctor in town and he genuinely cared. Kids could play outside safely and front doors were left unlocked. If we could turn back time, would we miss our computers, cars, DVD’s, coverage of Royal Weddings, cell phones, indoor plumbing, air conditioning, and electricity? Could we handle growing our own food? Would we miss convenience? Somehow, sometimes, I think I’d love it. I think I could make do. But then I’d seriously miss sushi… Nah, I’ll hang and hope for the best.

CHILDLESS BY CHOICE? B y L inda B arnby
arah and John have stopped discussing having children. “It’s just too painful to discuss,” Sarah says quietly. John says, “Why talk about something that’s not meant to happen?” When becoming pregnant isn’t easy and quick, it’s natural to question whether becoming parents is “in the cards” for you. I often hear stories about how couples came to remain childless. “Being ‘child-free’ is right for us”, they say, sometimes with tongue in cheek. Or, “We weren’t cut out to be parents”, as their lips form a thin line. I usually detect more than a little regret as, uncontrollably, their imaginations play the “what if” game. Sarah and John gave up trying to conceive years ago. “If we were meant to be parents, it would have happened,” Sarah shared. Sarah got busy with her life, her job, her friends. John plays a lot of golf. They say their lives are happy and complete. Yet when talk of children comes up, pain floods their faces even behind the masks of stoicism. “We’re happy the way we are, aren’t we? Why make any changes?” they reason. Yet, deep down, they feel a twinge of longing, that a God-given gift is being left unclaimed. Why do some choose to take decisive action while others do nothing? One couple who came to see me were struggling to make a decision. Susan, a nurse, was determined to become a mother. Kevin, the owner of a landscaping company, hardly spoke. I surmised that Kevin was extremely fearful of creating a situation worse than being childless and seeing his wife hurt. Susan, although anxious about adopting, was eager to get started. Kevin too had mixed feelings. Yet his goal was to avoid pain and loss at all costs. After weeks of discussion, they finally decided to take the plunge. Rachel, five months pregnant, decided Kevin and Susan more than met her expectations. In fact, she grew to love them as they continued to spend time together. About a month before the baby was due, Rachel called to say her situation had changed. Her parents, previously unwilling to help her,
had had a change of heart. She was going to live with them until the baby was born. Susan and Kevin were devastated, but gave Rachel their full support. This spun Kevin emotionally right back where he began. His reaction was, “See? We were never meant to be parents. The failure of our adoption plan proves it.” As I presented them with several other adoption opportunities, they declined each one. But still I knew they both desperately wanted to be parents. Kevin had turned the corner and acknowledged to himself that he wanted to be a father. The adoption failure, though, paralyzed him with fear of more potential loss. As his paralysis seemed to have infected Susan too, I began to wonder if they were every going to emerge from their grief and fear and move forward with a new adoption plan. One day, Rachel called to say she wanted to place her baby for adoption, but only if Susan and Kevin were still willing to adopt him. Susan was beside herself with joy. Kevin, however, had a different reaction. Fear slammed him in the face again. When Rachel brought her son to meet his new mom and dad, they all felt that it was “meant to be.” When Kevin held his son for the first time, he melted, clearly over the moon with happiness. Are people truly childless by choice? Or are they childless by fear? Kevin and Susan walked over the hot bed of coals that was their fear. They chose to put themselves at emotional risk to achieve their dream of becoming a family. “iSteve: The Book of Jobs” Inevitably, like most other red-blooded American males, you will find yourself having some fun on the sun-kissed dunes of your favorite beach this summer. Do yourself a favor and take some time away from the cocktail-infused bocce tournaments to read the only official autobiography of Apple demi-god Steve Jobs. Authorized by the man himself, this tome is the definitive professional and personal story of one of the greatest technological visionaries of our time. Authored by famed journalist and biographer Walter Isaacson using unprecedented access to Jobs’ family and peers, this biography will give you some insight into the meteoric resurgence of Apple and the man behind that resurrection. DRINK
The Moscow Mule Though it is tempting during the dreaded heat waves of mid-summer, it is never manly or acceptable for a gentleman to drink a daiquiri, a colada, or any drink that requires an umbrella to complete. Instead, maintain your masculine form while paying tribute to your 1940’s counterpart by gathering your fellows for a Moscow Mule this summer. Created in 1941 and popularized during the East coast vodka craze of the 1950’s, this buck cocktail combines ice, vodka, limes, and ginger beer to produce a refreshing, alternative summer drink that will instantly ready you for a backyard grill session that your distinguished forebears would be proud of. Ladder Golf Like all gentlemen should, I spend my late summer and early fall mentally preparing for the upcoming season of what should be considered our official national pastime: college football. I also know that the best part about watching football live is the few hours spent before the game taking part in the activity that I personally consider our unofficial national pastime: Tailgating. Aside from the camaraderie of eating a healthy amount of grilled meats, imbibing with your fellow alums, and recounting the numerous ways that your team is better than your opponent’s, tailgating is the perfect arena for proclaiming your ultimate dominance in games of skill. This season, instead of playing bocce, corn hole, or any number of amateurish drinking games, adopt a more gentlemanly approach: Ladder Golf. While throwing pieces of rope tipped with golf balls at three horizontal bars doesn’t sound like much on paper, it will make for a lifetime of playful competition and bragging rights between you and your closest friends. Pick one up today (available at www.laddergolf.com) and start practicing for the upcoming season.

Get Me to the Altar has the solution to help you look and feel your best on your wedding day! Overload Fitness, located in Altamonte Springs, is an amazing company that believes in helping brides and grooms get fit for their wedding and beyond. Techno-Savvy How to Enhance the Dinner Table Experience How does a company like Best Buy that is associated so strongly with technology also understand and support the need for time spent unplugged from it all? According to the company’s website, Best Buy believes technology should serve people, and not the other way around. There is a difference in appreciating technology and being consumed by it. Technology is there to enhance our lives, in business, education, and even society. That’s right, social. So why does it seem then, that the more advanced the technology, the less engaged the social interaction between people? Best Buy believes that you don’t have to give up one to have the other. For example, instead of associating a gaming system with solitary confinement in one’s living room void of human interaction, think of the gaming system as a new way to connect friends. After a great meal, have your friends gather in the living room to compete at Nintendo’s Wii Bowling or dance to the Michel Jackson Experience on the Xbox. Technology is like clay and can be molded to fit our lives in the manner we see fit. If we allow it to isolate us, then it will, but if we incorporate it to expand and enhance our world, it will. The world of gaming has taken on a life of its own, so much in fact, that Best Buy is restructuring the entire department to focus on this technological explosion. This is an area where human interaction is at the forefront; casting the right associates in these new roles that understand the gamer’s world and can speak the language. Gaming is so commonly associated with ‘fun’ and ‘friends’ that even Best Buy Stores schedule game nights for associates as team bonding events and rewards for achieving company goals. Let us continue looking forward and creating a world where ideas, inventions, and new forms of technology flourish in ways that not only make life fun and easy but inspire us to be connected to each other, our community, and the world.

What do
not the only catalyst, it was also the people, the sharing, the welcoming and the accepting that comprised all that they were seeking — gioie della tavola, or “the joys of the table.” When most people picture Italy, they think of the welcoming warmth and joy of the Italian table. It’s no wonder Audrey, Diane and Julia sought out this psychological piece of real estate to set up camp. However, you don’t have to travel across the ocean this summer to experience gioie della tavola. Personal chef Isabelle Morgia di Vicari explains that you can find all that you are seeking and
more at your own table. “The most affordable luxury we have is to get out and enjoy this glorious season and celebrate with la famiglia and friends,” says Chef Isabella. “It’s at the table, a tavola, where the majority of our most treasured memories happen.” Chef Isabella is on a mission, with her fabulous Italian cooking, to bring it back to the table. She explains that la famiglia doesn’t necessarily mean your relatives; it is the union with people you love and care about.

Roman Holiday, Under the Tuscan Sun and Eat Pray Love all have in common? Each was a summer blockbuster hit about a woman finding herself in one of the most romantic, savory places on earth — Italy. However, it wasn’t the Italian men, fashion or even history that allowed these characters to let go of their high-strung demeanor and quench that insatiable thirst for adventure. It began with the Italian food. Think about it. In each scene where the main character begins to relinquish her inner turmoil, it was set at the Italian table. The food was

ISABELLA’S PASTA PANTRY “How often do you open up your home and have a wonderful meal with family and friends?” she asked. “Some people are too concerned with their home never being ‘good enough’ or ‘clean enough’ to invite people over. We need to change that mindset. Some of the greatest memories and deepest relationships are created at your dinner table.” Isabella Morgia di Vicari is first-generation American of Italian heritage born in this country, with a very large family from Calabria and Trieste, Italy. Growing up in Orlando since 1970, she was raised in her family’s restaurant businesses, which taught Isabella many life lessons including the wonderful culture of food. Isabella shares her amazing cooking skills with WTGL TV 45 “The Good Life” as well as on PBS with the Growing Bolder team, Marc Middleton and Bill Shafer. You can’t help but love Isabella’s infectious smile and encouraging words as she prepares her meals for viewers. After a lesson with Isabella, even the most amateur chef will turn into a proud cuoco. “If you are worried about what to prepare, let me tell ya, you don’t have to be a great chef to make a great meal,” she says. “It’s the simplicity that brings out the flavors. Let’s learn to ‘veggie up’, eat less meat and add more flavor to your meals.” Chef Isabella demystifies the notion that all Italian dishes are heavy in cheese, meats and sauce. “There are so many Italian dishes that are much more porch friendly,” she says. “There is so much life beyond those Italian dishes. And once you learn them, you’ll be labeled for life. Everyone will want you and your dish at their porch party. And best of all, they are so easy. Once you make them you can serve them, as is, without heating them up.” Chef Isabella encourages us to take advantage of a tavola at earlier times in the day. “Keep it simple by asking people to come over earlier in the day,” she says. “It’s most cost effective to have them over for breakfast, brunch or lunch instead of a dinner party.” She reminds us that at any time of the day, a tavola, “at the table,” we are welcomed, we open our hearts and allow life’s greatest dramas and celebrations to unfold. Bonds are strengthened, battles are forged and the deepest ties of love and friendship are developed and reinforced around the dinner table. During this summer season take the time
to appreciate la famiglia. Open up your table to the ones you love and want to get to know better. You’ll notice a great change in yourself, just like Audrey, Diane and Julia did. A magical synergy is created when the joys of conversation and intimacy commingle with the pleasures of savory food and drink. “Now take these wonderful recipes and prepare them for your family and friends,” she says. “It is true — a way to anyone’s heart is through the stomach!” Today, Isabella is a Personal Chef who specializes in Authentic Italian and Spanish food. Isabella’s Bella Cucina offers a private gourmet dining experience for four or more in your home, full catering services for any of your special events, and last but not least, personalized cooking classes at her two new locations, Home Resource Gallery in Winter Park and Aggressive Appliances in Orlando.
Tonno ala Toscana 2 cans of beans white and pink (or any beans of your choice) 1 can Albacore Tuna 1 med red onion ½ cup capers ¾ pint of cherry tomatoes 8 T of red wine vinegar 16 T of extra virgin olive oil Handful of fresh basil chiffonade Open the can of beans, rinse and put in large bowl. Add the drained can of tuna to the beans, the red onion thinly sliced, capers, cherry tomatoes. In a small bowl mix the vinegar and olive oil together, salt to taste and pour over the beans.
Pasta Siciliana with Arugula 4 large tomatoes 6 cloves of garlic ½ cup of Romano cheese 1 cup of extra virgin olive oil
All of these ingredients may be found at a well-stocked supermarket. However, your pastas will taste even better if you use the highest quality ingredients, so do some taste testing and look to Italian markets and specialty stores for the best examples of each.
DRY GOODS Most of these ingredients will last for a year or more in the cupboard. • Dried pasta (keep a stash of different shapes and lengths) • Capers (salt-packed are best; be sure to rinse well before using) • Olives (avoid canned if possible, even better, get them at the deli department and keep them refrigerated) • Anchovies (again saltpacked tend to be of better quality than oil; though either will add wonderful savory flavor) • Canned tuna (preferably imported and in oil) • Sun-dried tomatoes • High quality canned tomatoes (buy a variety of sized cans, whole and diced) • Pine nuts, walnuts, almonds (these will keep even longer in the freezer; consider toasting them briefly in a dry pan to bring out their flavor) • Breadcrumbs (or make your own in seconds by whirring some bread, or even an English muffin, in a food processor; use fresh or toast lightly on a baking sheet for crunch) • Olive oil (regular for sautéing; extra-virgin for finishing) • Canned beans and chickpeas (drain and rinse before using) • Chicken broth (low-sodium is the way to go with purchased broth; some brands come in convenient 8-ounce packages) • Crushed red pepper flakes (and other dried hearty spices such as black pepper, oregano, and thyme)

just 10 minutes away from Disney World and about 20 minutes from downtown Orlando. This area is named after Dr. Phillip Phillips who was a citrus tycoon responsible for substantial innovations in the processing and packaging of orange juice. Dr. Phillips is home to luxury neighborhoods located along the prestigious Butler Chain of Lakes. There are two golf courses nearby, Bay Hill Country Club and Orange Tree Country Club. The Bay Hill Country Club is where the famous Arnold Palmer Invitational Golf Tournament takes place. Most of these neighborhoods are gated and have private pools, parks, playgrounds, tennis courts, and docks where residents enjoy their boats and jet skis. Sand Lake Road leads to the Dr. Phillips area and is known as “Restaurant Row” for all of the dining choices offered in a short distance on this road. There is any kind of food you desire on Restaurant Row from Turkish and Middle Eastern cuisine at Anatolia and Cedar’s, pressed sandwiches at Press 101, to a fresh take on an Italian Chophouse where Sinatra serenades you as you feast on skillet-roasted mussels at Timpano.
Windermere
Why It’s Hot: Near the Dr. Phillips area lays
the town of Windermere. Established in 1889, Windermere retains the small town feel which gives it such charm. Many streets are unpaved and street signs are given an old time feel with white concrete posts. Windermere is located between several lakes in the Lake Butler chain. Many residents have docks where they can enjoy these beautiful lakes known for their clean waters. Windermere is home to many professional sports figures. A little known fact: Many of these celebrities live in the Isleworth gated community, which is outside the limits of Windermere, however they still utilize a Windermere mailing address for its prestige. Windermere is home to gorgeous estates and a secluded privacy that many desire. Residents of Windermere can enjoy the view of the lakes and lovely scenery from their porches while gathering with family and friends.

BRITE GUY
Robyn’s Rant:
Have a question for
OUR BRITE GUY? Dear Brite Guy, With bikini season here, I catch my guy checking out other women. I know I look just as good, but it still makes me self-conscience and paranoid. We are in a great relationship with a great bedroom life, why does he continue to do this? And why can’t he at least be a little more covert about it?
Dear Observant Bikini Girl, If your guy is immature enough to check out other women in your presence, he is a fool. It is a classless move that is reserved for teenage boys that haven’t quite made it to second base. Yet, for some unknown reason hordes of men continue this throughout their lives, even when in great relationships. For tough issues like these I revert to the experts, like Cesar Millan, “The Dog Whisperer”. Men, like dogs, develop habits early on and it is well documented that it is always much easier to train them in good habits than to break bad ones. Although a shock collar would be nice, you will have to start disciplining him when he misbehaves though more conventional methods. First, let him know you are aware of it. Second, express your disappointment. Third, punish him (I will let you use your discretion). Then when he starts to learn, reward him (once again, at your discretion). It’s pretty simple stuff here. And if this doesn’t work, throw that bikini on, grab a cocktail, and head over to muscle beach to check out the talent. His motivation to be a good boy should be obvious once the other dogs start sniffing around.

SUMMER 2011 | BRITEGIRL.COM
Dear Brite Guy, I am a business owner. I converse with men daily. Most of my clients are men-owned businesses. Why can’t some of them get it through their head that it is business ONLY? How do I make this understood without coming across as a complete bitch?
Dear All-Business, There are really two issues here: power and respect. Unfortunately the power issue is a tough nut to crack because you may not be able to overcome that obstacle. Respect on the other hand can be established. My suggestion is to combat this with both guns blazing; in other words, hit fast and hit hard. At the first inkling of inappropriate behavior, CORRECT IT! You have earned the right to be respected and it is imperative that the other party knows that. You can’t beat around the bush and try to be nice, because that only delays their behavior. You can be tactful and firm yet still graceful when you explain that they have crossed the line. The end result is usually either one of two things: you form a much better business relationship based on mutual respect or you cut loose a womanizing, narcissistic pig. If you aren’t sure just ask yourself this: do you want to maintain a business relationship (or any relationship for that matter) with someone who does not respect you? “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” –Abraham Lincoln
Do you know a PPP?
Do you know any “PPP’s,” what I call “Professional Patient People?” These are your family members and friends who, regardless of age or gender, are constantly complaining they are ill but really do not have a documented disease. I have zero sympathy for these “PPP’s” and I have great reason for my indifference. For almost a decade I lived on East 71st Street in Manhattan, around the corner from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Ronald McDonald House. I’ve seen, visited with and helped those with real ailments and disease. Which brings me to “Professional Patient People.” These folks are looking for sympathy. The irony is, their complaints are so constant and without merit, that the friends and family they are trying to elicit attention from, ultimately, don’t want to have anything to do with them. And so their aches, pains and cries for attention get louder and louder. Do you have someone like this in your life? I find the people in your life who are the most ill, actually complain the least. When I ask you folks on Facebook to weigh in Barb writes, “O yea, one lady I work with, if you have a COLD, she has the FLU. I’ve never seen anyone take so many pills. She throws herself a daily pity party. Luckily I don’t work in her department, so that does help.” Joni admits, “I keep most of my aches and pains to myself, because I can’t stand all the “Professional” non-doctors out there who insist on knowing the details of MY ailments, so they can diagnose me and tell me what to do. It’s annoying and time consuming.” Christopher, a physician, says, “Let’s just say family reunions can be a nightmare.” Gene offers this advice, “Don’t ask ‘How are you?’ If you don’t want to hear the answer, just wish them a better rest of the day !” Amen Gene. BUSINESS
Personal Interactions
BUILDING AND REBUILDING MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIPS BY CHERYL MCDUFFIE JAMES
Remember when it was common place for employees
to sip their coffee and discuss what they did last night or share an experience they had with a customer that morning in the company break room and the only interruption was someone else joining in the conversation? What about the time when the only way you could get the input of your colleague was to pick up the telephone or walk to their office to engage in a live conversation? Ahh, those were the good old days. Those were the days when people felt they mattered because whether you had to deliver good news or bad, your colleagues knew that their interactions with you were going to be live, either face-to-face or over the telephone. Either way, they knew that interruptions would be minimal because this time was set aside for the conversation to be had. It was during these interactions that relationships were built, friendships were forged, and life-long customers were established. Today our business interactions are constantly interrupted with ringing, beeping, ringtones, and the like as we attempt to engage with our colleagues and customers. The advancements in technology have definitely provided each of us with advantages with real-time benefits that can improve our responsiveness in business. The challenge is that despite our increased ability to communicate, our ability to truly connect and interact in a meaningful, lasting, and impactful way has diminished tremendously. This issue serves as a reminder of what it truly means to be part of a community in which connection and interaction provides the foundation for establishing, mending, and maintaining personal relationships with a purpose. Despite the convenience of instant messaging, technology isn’t a substitute for old fashion, face-to-face, voice-tovoice interactions. A recent article in CNN Money stated that, “we have pretty good evidence that companies that put employees first outperform others over the long-term.” Simply stated, when you put your people first you
win. One of the most critical elements of putting your people first is selecting the most productive way to connect and interact with them, face-to-face, voice-to-voice interaction. Here are three ideas on how you can enhance your interaction effectiveness during your workday: 1. Think before you type. We have numerous opportunities to interact with our colleagues each day. Before you type that email or “IM” your colleague, ask yourself “when was the last time I actually had a face to face or voice to voice conversation with X? How can our relationship and the stated business be enhanced if I were to walk over to their desk or dial their number? 2. Is there something “urgent” pending? If the answer to that question is no, then put your phone on silent (not vibrate), leave it in your purse or in your briefcase, and don’t touch it until after your conversation, meeting, business meal, etc. has ended. Your ability to fully engage and focus on those in your presence will create value. People want to know that they are valued and there’s no better way to convey that feeling than to give your undivided attention. 3. Watch and listen for cues. One of the primary benefits to face-to-face interactions is that you can observe other’s non-verbal cues. Many times it’s not what one says but how they say it that gives you the full picture. Listen for not just what they say, but what they don’t say. Your ability to maximize your message can occur when you are able to uncover through the use of effective probing what your colleague doesn’t verbalize. You can get up close and personal with those you are engaged in conversation with and better tailor your message based on the reaction you get from the sender. Remember being connected doesn’t necessarily equate to being valued. Value comes from personal interactions that allow us to utilize our various senses, sight, smell, touch, etc. which has always and will continue to be the foundation of effective, meaningful, value-centered communication. This is what builds business “communities” that last long after the signal goes out or the system crashes.

Body Talk
HOW TO USE BODY LANGUAGE TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS BY RACHEL ROSENBERGER
n a scene from the sitcom Seinfeld, Jerry tells his friend Elaine that when you ask someone about their relationship and they touch their face, you know it’s not going too well. “And the higher up on the face you go, the worse the relationship is getting,” he explains. While humorously portrayed, Jerry’s theory isn’t far off. Often our subconscious physical habits reveal truths about us that our voices aren’t audibly expressing. Body language expert and author of The Power of Body Language, Tonya Reiman says that one of our biggest foes is ignorance to our own nonverbal communication. “Usually people have no idea how they come across,” she said. But we need not be prisoners to nervous ticks and twiddling thumbs. Conscious control of your own nonverbal habits will assure that the messages you want to express shine through. Whether you’re demonstrating a product line, interviewing for a job, or training new hires, incorporating a few learned habits can elevate your level of effective communication. Observe and Reflect Back. In one-on-one interactions, help set the other person at ease by mirroring their body language. Using matching hand gestures and posture implies that you are similar to the listener. This helps you connect with that person and establish a positive rapport. Seeing is Believing. We all know that keeping eye contact is crucial, but equally important is the type of eye contact. Ideally, hold your gaze for a few seconds at a time rather than sweeping glances. When breaking eye contact momentarily, side to side is better than down, as down appears submissive. But resist the urge to stare too intensely; you want to come across as serious and confident, but calm. When addressing a group, make a stronger connection by finishing a point while looking directly at someone. Everyone wants to feel acknowledged, so purposefully address each person throughout your presentation.
Rachel Rosenberger is a freelance writer living in Winter Park. She puts her Master of Professional Writing degree to good use by authoring a Generation X-themed blog, The Shape of X (shapeofx.blogspot.com).
Stand and Deliver. Keep an open posture, with your feet facing
your audience. If one foot is pointing in another direction, your audience may perceive that you want to leave. Avoid crossing your arms across your chest so as not to appear closed off to what is being said. Similarly, placing them on your hips signals dominance or condescension. To send positive signals use upward and open hand gestures. A show of palms signifies honesty and willingness to meet halfway without being pushy. Melbourne family physician Dr. Nancy Baker uses her body language to help set the tone with patients. “I never place anything between myself and a patient, whether it’s my desk or even their chart,” she said. “It’s important to affirm that we’re having a conversation, not an interrogation.” Heightened awareness of how we are perceived by others leads to positive communication and more genuine connections with each other. Whether you’re in sales, teaching, or healthcare, use body language to reinforce your words. As Reiman’s book reiterates, “Every single thing about you makes a statement. Make sure you’re making the statement you’re happy with.”
