EDITORIAL
I
t’s both an honour and greatly satisfying for me to announce the publication of the book Visagism: Theory of Compensation and Empowerment, edited by the VMV Cosmetic Group Foundation and headed by two renowned professionals: Cruz Sánchez and Gonzalo Zarauza. Both have brought their experience and that of the rest of the team to this manual, which is currently the only one of its kind. This publication is the first of an educational project that has has its objective the realization of one of my dreams: to create didactic material to help to train professional hairdressers. Designing an educational project means planning a process to achieve an educational aim, embodied by learning objectives. My aim is to improve and nurture a profession that I feel, I respect and I love as much as possible. We live in a constantly evolving society, in which people are more informed than ever thanks to the Internet and new technologies. In this context, hairdressing professionals must not be left behind and must continue training to be able to offer clients innovative and different tools. For this reason, we at the Foundation have kick-started this training project, which is unique in the sector. The first stop on this journey is the visagism manual, with which we hope to improve the quality of services in salons offering the new Beauty Consulting service, which will allow professionals to improve the profitability of their businesses. And, last but not least, training in a subject that is going to make you stand out from the competition. New hairdressing professionals need a new training and the VMV Cosmetic Group Foundation wants to respond to their needs properly, with the endorsement of a certificate of quality. For this reason, we are already working on new educational materials, about which I will soon be able to give more details. We hope that, with these tools, and with the desire to make things happen and strive, that these professionals can continue to grow.

arlos Baute is the face of Salerm Cosmetics in 2016. The Venezuelan singer has triumphed in the music world, and now he will do the same in hairdressing salons across the globe, with his image on the most anxiously awaited calendar. He recently released his latest single, entitled “Perdimos el control” (”We Lost Control”). In the music video he stars alongside his wife, Astrid Klisans. Baute is delighted to be a “calendar boy” and, although he isn’t obsessed with his looks, he never forgets his Salerm Cosmetics hairspray so he can do his quiff.
Carlos Baute has been married to the Venezuelan architect and model Astrid Klisans since 2011. They got married in Latvia, where his wife’s family comes from. Baute lives a quiet life, which was only ruptured by a disagreement brought to light by Marta Sánchez concerning the rights to one of his hits, “Colgando en tus manos” (”Hanging from Your Hands”). This episode has now been left in the past and they are friends once again.
You are a successful singer and now you’re going to feature on a calendar. How do you feel about this new role? People have always told me that I have great hair, and that I should do something to do with world of hair. Now it’s the right time. I was tremendously lucky because I have been using products from Salerm Cosmetics for many years, thanks to my wife who used them before me. The hairspray in particular, and now many other as well. So when I was asked to be the face of Salerm Cosmetics, I was delighted. Additionally, I am really happy, as I didn’t know that the

Canarian, Galician, Cuban and Venezuelan roots meet in the singer, songwriter, actor and presenter Carlos Baute (Caracas, 1974), who stars in Salerm Cosmetics’ 2016 calendar. Baute, along with Colombians Juanes and Shakira, forms part of the triumvirate of the Latin American musicians who are currently most successful. He found success with the song “Colgando en tus manos” (”Hanging from Your Hands”) (2008), at which point he already had six titles in his discography and 20 years of being a singer under his belt. He began at age 13 with the kids’ band Los Chamos. As well as singing and songwriting, Baute has also tried his hand at acting and television presenting. After debuting in the Venezuelan soap opera Destino de mujer (”Woman’s Destiny”) (1997), Baute was seen in Spanish series such as Ala… Dina, Aida and Mis adorables vecinos (”My Adorable Neighbours”), Argentine comedies such as Los únicos (”The Uniques”) and television programmes such as Operación Triunfo (”Operation Triumph) and A Bailar (”Let’s Dance”). It’s been a long and varied career, in which Baute is still set to wrtite many chapters.

company was Spanish and was so big, because these are products that I’ve seen in many salons in Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico... I’ve seen them all over. How would you feel if you went to Miami, or to your home country, Venezuela, or to Colombia, and you went into a salon and saw your own picture on the calendar? I hadn’t thought about that. A little bit shocked, to be honest. It happens to me when I go to a bar or a club and they play one of my songs. Inside I think that I want the Earth to swallow me up because it makes me a bit embarrassed. But in any case, it will be lovely to share with the people who are there in that moment, and even better if it’s working with Salerm Cosmetics because it’s a family, a great team. Let’s talk hair: what’s your daily haircare routine? If I’m completely honest, it’s a bit of a disaster, because I live in hotels. I’m not the kind of person that carries around a bag full of products. With this kind of life, living out of a suitcase, coming and going, I try to make everything as practical as possible, which doesn’t leave me much time to look after myself. But when I’m at home I do, and much more now.
But you do care about your hair, right? When it comes to styling I do. At the moment I love having a quiff, and I like to have it properly styled. My Salerm hairspray and my wax come with me everywhere. Does your wife give you haircare tips? You know what, I get my hair cut once a month, meaning I experiment quite a lot and I don't really mind if my hair gets frazzled or not, because in the end I’m going to end up getting it cut. Moreover, I’m already at an age at which my barbers tell me I won’t lose my hair... What message would you give to Salerm Cosmetics’ clients? I want to thank the whole Salerm Cosmetics family for letting me be part of it. It’s touched my heart. I hope and I wish that you continue to triumph in many more countries and in many more salons. Keep making us look good with your products!

Caprile knows how to communicate his natural and simple style to bridal fashion, a world in which innovation seems to be vetoed. As well as his touches of fantasy, such as borders and embroidery, Caprile was one of the first fashion designers to introduce the bodice to wedding dresses, something that we consider as standard nowadays.

this fashion designer from Madrid. Although the daily reality of Lorenzo Caprile is something else, far removed from the limelight. He prefers to define himself as a “tenacious tailor” rather than a stylist, a designer or a creator. In the workshop that he founded more than 20 years ago in Madrid’s Salamanca neighbourhood, everything is done by hand, making tailor-made and unique pieces. There is a before and an after in Caprile’s life. Princess Cristina’s wedding in 1997 and the dress that the
fashion designer created for the occasion turned him into the biggest creator of wedding dresses in Spain and into one of the geniuses of haute couture. Today, his is one of the most important fashion houses.
Maximum coherence Caprile is synonymous with elegance. It might be because of the Italian blood running through his veins. He studied fashion in New York and Florence, a city in which he got a degree in Language and Literature. It doesn’t
seem to be a coincidence that, in a happy conjunction of both worlds, Caprile is an expert in the language of fashion. Some of his creations remain alive in our retinas; from the eye-catching evening wear that the current Queen Letizia showed off to the spectacular red dress with crystal embroidery that Anne Igartiburu wore at the end of 2013, or that which Macarena Gómez wore at the last Goya Awards, also red. And if you ask him what the best advice you can give a woman when she’s choosing what to wear, he is clear and direct: “don’t wear a disguise: be consistent with your style and personality”.

INTERVIEW
HALLE BERRY
“I like to transform myself, that’s where my passion for acting comes from”
H
alle Berry continues to defy all the obstacles that she faces, both personally and professionally. In the middle of separating from French actor Olivier Martinez, the actress lives a very hectic life, promoting her latest work, the series Extant, which she co-produces with Steven Spielberg. The series explores the life of a sterile astronaut who, on returning from a space mission, realizes she is pregnant and wonders if the child is hers or the product of a scientific experiment. Halle Berry is one of the few Oscar-winning actresses who has decided to make the leap from cinema to television, a decision that is closely related to her family situation. “Filming the series gave me time to be with my kids, and additionally, lately I haven’t been offered anything that was worth leaving my kids at home for in order to go to work,” explains the actress one hot morning at the end of summer in Beverly Hills. While her daughter Nahla scampers around the corridor of the hotel where we have met and little Maceo is in the room, Halle tells us about her current life, her children, her career

as an actress and producer and her work as an entrepreneur. Two years ago she launched the fragrance Closer by Halle Berry and she collaborates with the cosmetics brand for which she is the face. You act, produce, direct shorts, you're a mother of two and a business woman. What challenges are left for you? In my personal life, bringing up and educating my children, a challenge but at the same time something that makes me happy. Professionally, Extant is a real challenge because I’m not only involved as an actress but also as a producer. We imagine that it’s an added challenge having Steven Spielberg as your colleague... Steven has been my idol since I saw E.T., one of my favourite films of all times, and one that I want my children to see. He was an innovator of his time, and he still is, so working with him has been a stroke of luck and a reason to be very excited.

SALERM COSMETICS MAGAZINE 31
Leaving cinema for television has been a big change. What attracted you to this medium? The fact that the best scripts being written nowadays, especially for actresses in my circumstances, are for television. I feel very fulfilled. I have a great character, I’m working with great actors, good directors and excellent producers such as Spielberg. I am really happy, especially now that we’re starting the second season.
“AS YOU GET OLDER
it’s best not to wear much make-up so as not to look older
You were saying that now you have more time for your children. Does your eldest daughter know what her mother does for a living? My daughter thinks I’m a princess because when she sees me dressed up all glamorous to go to a gala she comes up to me and says in my ear, “Mommy, you’re a princess, right?” and I say that I am (laughs). Nahla comes to filmings and she sees me working but she still doesn’t really know what being an actor means, she’s only seven. Better that she thinks I’m a princess (laughs). To her you're a princess, to everyone else a beautiful, strong woman who doesn’t stop working and who hasn’t always had it easy. Where do you get your strength from? I think that being a mother has given me the strength to fight, come hell or high water. I have two children who

Halle is one of the most beautiful women on the planet, ambassador for a cosmetics brand, designer of a range of underwear and a fragrance. Although it’s always been her hair that’s been the big sensation. Over the years she has surprised everyone with varied and radical styles. We’ve seen her with long, shiny hair or with her natural curls. She has gone from the darkest brown tones to beach blonde. But when she decides to free herself from all ties, she opts for a pixie cut, her favourite style. A big fan of extensions, the actress admits that whenever she can, she goes back to this short style, which suits her so well.

Last February, Halle Berry received the Creative Conscience Prize, which was awarded by the organization United4:Humanity, for her work at the Jenesse Center in Los Angeles, a centre dedicated to fighting gender violence. Something that she has experienced first hand. Her family is her priority. She is very close to her mother and her sister who live in Los Angeles. Halle currently lives between France, where she moved after her marriage to Olivier Martinez and where her son Maceo was born, and California, where the father of her daughter Nahla, Gabriel Aubry, lives, and with whom she shares custody.
depend on me for everything. They are my inspiration and my motivation, my reason to get out of bed each day. Before they were born my strength came from my desire to work on what I most liked and to achieve my dream of being an actress. Now, my children are my inspiration. As well as your passion for acting, you are interested in the world of cosmetics. What do you do to look after your skin? I have changed my skincare routine, because as you age it’s important to give your skin what it needs. I’ve added products designed for mature skin, which give my skin vitality. The routine I follow at 40 is very different to that which I had when I was 20. I’ve realised that as you get older it’s best not to wear a lot of make-up because it makes you look older. Do you remember when you started to use make-up? Yes, I was 16. My mom didn’t like it that I was using make up but I loved experimenting with products and lip colours. I’ve always loved to transform myself, I guess that’s where my passion for acting comes from. That’s the age at which I started to enter beauty contests and for that it was important to learn how to use make-up.

We start by removing colour with Salerm Cosmetics’ Deco Eco bleach and with aloe vera oxidizing cream 20 V applied bit by bit to cover the whole hair and the tips in order to conduct a thorough cleaning, so as to obtain the cleanest base possible to work with. We leave it to work with no kind of protection or additional heat. Once this process is finished, we wash the hair with Hi Repair shampoo to eliminate the residues of the bleaching.

Transforming long hair into a mid-length do. The hair is divided into four sections: it is separated from ear to ear, marking a parting, and another central parting is made in the upper part of the head and to the base of the neck. In the fringe, we make a side parting, separating each side into two. We start the cut diagonally, at the base of the neck. The fringe is cut in a slope, with scissors. Each strip is cut diagonally, following the same direction as the cut by the neck. The rest of the hair is cut in a gradient, accenting the diagonal line.

How many of you are there? My salon is made up of nine professionals, a great team composed of Roxana, Pablo and Yanay (stylists), Edys (barbershop specialist), Mónica
(assistant stylist), Esther (nail specialist), Mily (beautician), Alexis (receptionist and also my mother) and me, Samir (stylist and owner). What services do you offer? Thanks to my team’s training, we offer a wide range of services for hair, nails and skin. We are able to attend to any need, whether it’s colour or a fashionable cut. What kind of clients come to your salon? I would say that 50% of our clients are very daring and 50% are very conservative. It’s a pleasure working with both groups because they know what they want and that helps us improve.

In terms of replenishing shampoos, Protein or Hi Repair; if we are detangling, Salerm 21; we also use Keramix. As for finishing products, Arganology, the new Grapeology (which I love) or the new Extrem Lac from Pro Line. These are products that our customers also take home with them.

The manual was personally prompted by Víctor Martínez Vicario, president of the VMV Cosmetic Group Foundation, and was developed thanks to the research and experience of its authors, Cruz Sánchez and Gonzalo Zarauza. The technical manual Visagism: Theory of Compensation/ Empowerment provides new essential knowledge for the sector and offers universal knowledge. This book features a charitable bent, as all the profits are destined to help those lacking in resources who want to study hairdressing or beauty, through scholarships and educational materials from the VMV Cosmetic Group Foundation. In fact, this

he most common safaris are taken during the day in a car, and last between three and five hours. But you can also do a safari on foot, by boat or hot air balloon. The best time to see animals and to enjoy the beauty of the African landscape is one or two hours after dawn. To be able to walk amongst the wildlife, the safari has to be done on reserves and private concessions, as in many national parks tourists cannot leave their vehicle. Walking visits are done with specialist guides, along supervised routes. It is, of course, a different experience, with a much greater impact on the senses than the classic jeep excursion. As for hot air balloon or boat safaris, they also offer a unique perspective on the landscape.
Accommodation options When choosing a safari you have to make some important decisions. For example, deciding if you want to stay in simple camps, middle-category lodges or more sophisticated, expensive ranches that can offer an unforgettable experience. Travelling as a group and staying in camps is cheaper. However, this option lacks certain comforts: there are no great luxuries, but on the other hand it offers a wilder contact with nature.
Choose your dates

Another important decision is when to go. Most safari tourism takes place between April and November, the dry season. In rainy season there are fewer animal migrations and the fact that the plants have more leaves makes observation more difficult. However, there are fewer people, more accessible prices and, if you have a good guide, you can witness interesting wildlife moments. Without doubt, there exists a wide range of safaris. We go over the best options to choose from.
SALERM COSMETICS MAGAZINE 83
The Serengeti Location: Northern Tanzania When to go: from April to June Without doubt, the most famous. With nearly 15,000 square metres, it contains the world’s highest concentration of large mammals. In these legendary plains, travellers will be struck by the magic, mystery and beauty of Africa and her animals: lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, jackals, zebras, giraffes, gazelles, antelopes, as well as fascinating birds. Highly recommended.
Kruger
Location: North east South Africa When to go: from May to August This is South Africa’s most famous and visited park. Although the landscape is not as spectacular as the savannah, here you can see the Big Five: lions, leopards, buffalo, elephants and rhinos. Another of the big benefits of this park is the wide range of options on offer, from budget safaris for backpackers to the most glamorous luxury.
Etosha
Location: Northern Namibia When to go: from May to October It’s one of the biggest parks in Africa (22,000 km2) and is in a remote zone (500 km from the capital). As well as forests and savannah, it is covered by a large salt flat. It has some 114 species of mammals, including the largest population of black rhino and cheetahs in Africa. You can also see lions, wildebeest and giraffes.
84 SALERM COSMETICS MAGAZINE
Masai Mara Location: South east Kenya When to go: August
Ngorongoro Location: Northern Tanzania When to go: May and June This 20 km-wide crater is one of the most renowned zones in Africa for seeing animals. In this extraordinary landscape you can easily observe a fascinating concentration of wildlife: lions, elephants, buffalo, wildebeest, rhinos, gazelles, zebras and flamingos. For this reason, it is one of the most popular tourism zones. The best advice: get to the crater before 9 am.
Hot air balloon safaris are organized in this park, and one of its biggest attractions is the legendary wildebeest and zebra migrations that arrive from the Serengeti. It is also home to one of the densest lion populations on the African continent. Visiting has the added incentive of coming into contact with the Masai culture, from which the park takes its name.
Chobe and Moremi
Location: Northern Botswana When to go: from May to November Both habitats are found in northern Botswana. The Chobe National Park is close to Victoria Falls and here the elephants wander freely. To the west is the Moremi Reserve, in the majestic Okabango Delta. Safaris are done in open 4x4s, on foot or by mokoros (traditional boats). Highly recommended.

he rhythm of modern life means stress, meals prepared and ingested quickly, pre-packaged food, alcohol, fizzy drinks... this way of eating is responsible for the sensation of bloating and an increase in volume – not in weight – and heavy digestion. Fighting this doesn’t mean following a strict weight loss regime – in general bloating and

This is when the body will appreciate some extra help with a detoxifying diet, that will allow it to reset.

When preparing a detox smoothie, it’s important that fruits and vegetables are blended whole to not miss out on their fibre content. For
this reason, smoothies are better than shakes, because the former include all the fibre of the ingredients, while these are lost when making a shake. Here we give you four recipes: You can include or skip ingredients as you like, or depending on what is available. VINYL
T
he vinyl is here to stay. That’s what the experts predict. We all make mistakes: we chucked out our vinyls or confined them to a box in the deepest, darkest basement. In the 90s, when CDS made their appearance we let ourselves be dazzled by their iridescent shine and not long ago we succumbed to digital format. Now we’ve awoken from the dream and realized that our music has become something intangible. This need that humans have for property, for the palpable, for physical contact can only be satisfied by vinyl, which holds in its grooves pure, high quality sounds, and according to many audiophiles, the best musical experience. HIPSTER: BEARD AND VINYL A trend that is contributing to the sales of vinyl music is the hipster subculture, which sets its sights on the 1940s, when jazz was the big thing, and they opt for fleeing convention, demonstrating a true passion for independent music in vinyl form. Moreover, being young and carrying a record under your arm is seen as a show of authenticity, though
we’ll have to see how fair this loyalty goes, as the vinyl is less practical.
Columbia and Emi didn’t want to miss out on this opportunity.
THE GOOSE THAT LAYS THE GOLDEN EGGS In 2014 the vinyl market in the USA grew 32%, and 101% in the UK, where production is still over 1 million discs a year, and 3.5% in Spain, although it seems that the figures from the IFPI (an association that represents the interests of 1,300 music companies) are not completely accurate, because in Spain the sector is part of the indie scene and many records are sold at concerts and online. The Japanese passion for high fidelity and the hipster boom in Japan means that their figures are like those in Britain. In the UK, vinyl now makes some £20 million a year, compared to just £3 million in 2010. The biggest vinyl producer in Europe, the Czech company GZ Media, has had no other option than to renovate its machinery from the 1980s to produce more than 12 million copies in 2014. The queen bee in the American market is United Record Pressing, which makes 40,000 copies a day.
WHAT’S PRODUCED? Everything: classics and contemporary. Solo artists, rock groups and pop see vinyl as their star product. It doesn’t matter to them that you download their music for free on iTunes because they offer a disc that they themselves have a lot of affection for. U2, The Vaccines, The Wombats, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Mark Knopfler, Lady Gaga, Bunbury, Daft Punk, Amy Winehouse, Oasis, REM, Nick Cave, Neil Young, Manic Street Preachers, Sex Pistols, David Bowie and The Doors have all been successful on the turntable... And there are real phenomena such as Lazaretto by Jack White with 75,000 copies in the USA in 2014, which became the biggest selling vinyl of the past 20 years. Players
You’ll find them from €70, although if you really want to take care of your vinyls, invest at least €200. At the height of the boom there are as many brands as there are colours: Technics, Numark, Stanton, Rega, NAD, Linn, Vestax, Thorens, Projet, Shure... Our advice: if you’re not a true expert, don’t buy a player that is no longer in production, as it might be impossible to find needles.

Clara Bow She was one of the most famous flappers and the first it girl in history. In 1927 she starred in It and, shortly afterwards, Wings, the first movie to win the Oscar for best film in 1929. Bow sparked trends with her bob hairstyle and her short cut; her hats became one of the most popular accessories amongst women and she caused a sensation with her pleated skirts. Her strong character and her unique personality were her other big draws. The following phrase is attributed to her: “The more I know about men, the more I love my dog.”
Marilyn Monroe The great icon of the 20th century. In the past five decades countless women have imitated her platinum blonde locks, bright red lips and the fitted dresses that accentuate her womanly curves. Many ladies identify with her hourglass figure, which broke the mould by emphasizing her sensuality in a period of repression. Monroe was wearing Vuitton and Ferragamo long before they were trendy and relaunched Chanel n.º 5 when she revealed that all she wore to bed was a few drops of this perfume.

Audrey Hepburn The star of Breakfast at Tiffany’s had a close bond with Givenchy. She was his muse. It is thanks to her that Ray Ban Wayfarer glasses, capri pants, tailored suits, short dresses in block colours, and below-the-knee skirts for a sophisticated look are all in fashion. She was the queen of scarves and belts and, of course, she made the oversized bag fashionable. It was then copied by many designers.
Jane Birkin
Madonna Madonna has had a great cultural impact on various generations. Experts insist that she’s not following fashion, rather that she herself is the trend. With each new release she reinvents herself and millions of fans follow suit. In the 1980s she went for a Marilyn Monroe look and in 1990 her most iconic image was the pink corset and pointed bra by her friend Gautier. Since the very start she created her own style, from punk to androgynous; from leggings and jeans to haute couture animal print... Versace and Dolce & Gabbana are her chief designers. Her best friend Rita Ora is the face of Material Girl, the fashion label that Madonna has with her daughter Lola.
Thanks to Sex in the City (19982004), Sarah Jessica Parker became a style icon. Her success comes from her eclecticism and she is the benchmark of street style. When she goes out she tends to opt for jeans, flats and different colour shirts, perfectly combining them with various accessories such as sunglasses, hats and scarves... But that all changes when night falls. She is always faithful to her Manolo heels, which became fashionable thanks to her. She loves brightly coloured minidresses or long, steamy styles. Moreover, she was one of the first celebrities to sport beach hair.
We owe to her creations such as fashion house Hermès’ crocodile skin Birkin bag (1984). Recently the brand was asked to remove her name from the bag due to the cruelty with which the animals are killed. In the 1970s the singer of Je t’aime… moi non plus was a rebel’s muse. Her bohemian, hippy style was trend-setting, but always had great sensuality and eroticism. She made boho chic style in vogue, with her shorts and miniskirts causing a scandal on many occasions, as well as her transparency.
Isabel Preysler Sarah Jessica Parker Her thick, dark eyebrows are her trademark and her motto, “embrace your weirdness”, has become popular all over the world. Cara has created her own personal style and since 2011 has been one of THE it girls. By day she goes for a casual, masculine style with tops printed with controversial images or names of bands, drainpipe trousers, chunky trainers and wool beanie hats. Last summer, aged 23, she decided to leave fashion. I hate my body,” she said.
Since her divorce from Julio Iglesias, Preysler has continued to be one of the darlings of the press. Her classic elegance and natural, discrete poise have always been admired. What’s more, she’s still capable of setting trends at 64 years old. The earrings she wore at the official announcement of her engagement to Mario Vargas Llosa, from the Coolook collection by designer Mar Aldequer, sold out in just a few hours. Her image is thought out down to the finest details and she uses classic-cut pieces in neutral colours like camel, sand, black and white which she combines perfectly with luxury accessories. Preysler adores white shorts with trousers or short skirts, and almost always goes for simple, straight-cut dresses. At special events she sports long or short dresses adorned with jewels or a touch of shine. Her must are shiny stilettos.
