New beginnings.

As this issue of BD magazine hits the doormat, you may be making last minute preparations for the NAF Five Star Winter Championships –taking advantage of the Easter break to squeeze in an extra lesson, giving your horse a tidy-up, preparing your lorry packing list.

It’s always such an exciting time, and the Championships brings that first real sense of spring (hopefully!) when horse owning becomes a pleasure once again.

It will have a different feel this year, moving to Addington, and while many of us have lots of happy memories of Hartpury, our new Buckinghamshire home is also much-loved by riders, with good reason. The expansive arenas offer great opportunities for this hugely popular event.

We wish you every success and hope that everyone will enjoy the sense of occasion that ‘the winters’ brings.

That feeling of a new beginning is something we also hope you embrace as you read about our new sustainability policy.

BD has taken a long hard look at itself with the help of consultants White Griffin and will be aiming to make events and business activities more sustainable in the future.

While we might miss flicking through a lovely event programme, how convenient is it to scroll through your phone to check what time the next class starts, what the leading score is and what demonstrations are planned at an event like the LeMieux National Championships? Technology is a mixed blessing at times but it can certainly help to cut waste.

We’ve all adopted recycling and planning ahead to reduce food waste at home, so it shouldn’t be too hard to translate that to the yard. The carbon calculator now on offer (see p52) can also help horse owners see where everyday items such as water and electricity can be used more efficiently. Saving money on these outgoings means more to spend on training and competing!

Many paddocks are already a haven for wildlife but a few small changes to grassland management can help to reduce the impact of equine activities on the planet. Riding horses is enhanced so much by the beauty of our surroundings; isn’t it worth doing our bit to keep them like that?

And on that subject did you know that you can access this magazine as an electronic document through the members’ hub on the website ? Not only does it save paper and transport, any articles that you are saving to read later are there at your fingertips rather than having to rummage through a pile of magazines!

IN MEMORIAM

Anne Blackburn, a forerunner for what became the RDO (now DO) role, passed away on 18 January at the age of 91. Anne was passionate about the sport and very influential within the North & East region. She undertook the first venue inspections in the area and was known for her clear talking and standard setting.

The highly respected horsewoman Jean Mackaness sadly passed away on 5 February at the age of 97. A prolific dressage judge in the central area for many years, Jean had a passion for showing and hunting, as well as dressage, and rode into her 80s.

We also said a sad goodbye to Grizel Sackville-Hamilton, a List 3A Judge, who passed away on the 9 February at the age of 99. Very active within the North & East region, Grizel was known for her positive and encouraging judging.

On behalf of the dressage community, British Dressage offers condolences to the families and connections of Anne, Jean and Grizel.

PARIS FEVER STARTS

It’s Olympic and Paralympic year and there’s plenty of opportunity for spectators to catch our team hopefuls in action in domestic CDI and CPEDI fixtures, which form part of the selection process. These include Royal Windsor (see above) and Hickstead in May, followed by Wellington in June and Hartpury in July. The series has opportunities for four, five, six and seven year old horses and four, five and six year old ponies. With the aim to help produce and educate the future stars of the sport, with health, happiness and the career longevity of each equine athlete in mind, the qualifiers take place from March to mid-June. The top placed horses from these events head to two semi-final competitions to decide entries for the Championship final, taking place at the LeMieux National Dressage Championships in September.

The Young Dressage Horse classes are designed to give each age group maximum confidence and security in the arena. The first round of qualifiers see combinations ride the required route plan in pairs and the top two from each age group, with scores over 7.0, will go forward to the semi-final. At the semi-finals, the BD National Tests for each age group are used to determine the National final places, with the top three horses given direct qualification. The KBIS Young Dressage Horse Championships follow the same format as the semi-finals, with the top placed combinations going forward to final judging where rider judge testing contributes to the ultimate results. Oppenheimer are breaking new ground as young judges of ciating at the highest level while continuing to compete at Grand Prix. Jane Carley nds out why they have joined the judging ranks and how they see the future.

QTELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND IN DRESSAGE – AS A RIDER AND COACH.

Alice: I fell into dressage really. Mum did showing and point to point and I had a pony with a dirty stop which put me off jumping. Mum took on a dressage bred horse that didn’t enjoy it. She got him back on track and handed him over to Kate Smith who won three national titles on him and got to PSG. I was looking after him as Mum had been diagnosed with breast cancer, and it sounds a bit cheesy but when Kate won a class on him at the winters, I said to Mum ‘I want to do that...’ I don’t think Mum or I realised where it would take us... to national titles and success as breeders.

Where coaching is concerned, I’ve got quite a lot of clients on the yard, and did my BDCC Level 3 at the end of last year. There are two ladies including my sister doing really well on non-wambloods, and others who have won regional and national titles, plus Georgie Nicholls who’s a young professional. It’s a wide variety, keeps me on my toes!

When I was younger it was all about the riding but as I’ve got older, I get a lot of pleasure out of other people being successful. I like to see people improve and their confidence grow.

Alex: My parents were not horsey, and we bought a threeyear-old ex-racehorse. I fell off a lot, and he wasn’t suitable for jumping so I was forced into dressage! One of the first yards I worked at did natural horsemanship, rebacking horses. But we also had some nice horses in, one of Rob Whitaker’s, one of Kitty King’s, so it was a great place to work. After working for Adam Kemp and Matt Frost for a while I set up my own yard and we’ve been here for eight years now.

I’ve been on youth teams and I’m about to bring my third horse to GP plus some at small tour. We’ve been lucky and have some really nice horses, but the area that we are

in is not particularly dressage focused, and we’ve done a good job of making it more high profile.

We work with riding schools, and one of my pupils, Isla Sully was on the Junior team at the Europeans last year.

It’s really nice to move to an area and can see that you’ve developed the sport there.

QWHY DID YOU BECOME A JUDGE?

Alex: I got into judging as – although I don’t like to admit it – I was that person who would get quite stroppy if I got a bad score! And then I thought that I was doing as much as I could with the training to get the marks better, so why not become a judge and figure out where I’m losing marks. It really helps with my clients as well, because they can do test riding run throughs and they can bring in their sheets and we can look through their marks. When you are judging a test you might put down ‘more fluency’ because you’ve only got a short time, but I can explain to my clients what that means and how to improve.

I thought I’d stop whingeing and go and do it. I realised how hard it is! I soon saw that we need to cut them a bit of slack!

Alice: I started the judging journey just over a year ago and took the List 2 exam in November. I’ve always put a lot into my riding and competing but I feel the sport’s changed and it’s become harder to break through at the top and a lot more expensive going abroad post-Brexit. So I thought rather than sitting and having a moan about it, I’d branch out.

People have been saying to me for years that they thought I’d be a really good judge, but I wasn’t sure it was for me. I think there’s a lot of pressure for the judges – we always say that you can only please one person a day, and that’s normally the person that has won.

I did one of the taster sessions and I just really enjoyed the discussions.

I took my test and it was a huge relief to pass, especially when you have ridden to Grand Prix there’s a lot of pressure when people hear that you are doing your judge training.

QHOW DID YOU FIND THE JUDGE TRAINING AND TESTING SYSTEM?

Alice: I was the first to Fastrack under the new system. I was eligible having ridden at Grand Prix, but all the training is at PSG level, so I also did some training at Novice to Advanced Medium, just for my confidence. You want to do a good job – I have my expectations at each level but it was nice to get in line with everyone else.

I really enjoyed the process and I’m hoping to do my upgrade to 2A this year; you can skip 2A and go straight to List 1, but as I’ve only taken the one assessment I want to take a bit of time and get confident with what I’m doing before making the leap to List 1.

And at the moment I don’t have any Small Tour horses to compete so it makes it easier fitting the training in. When you’ve sat in for 30, practiced judged for 20 and written for

20 more that’s 70 tests, and when you get up the levels, the best way to get the numbers in is at the Premier Leagues. If you’re competing as well, it’s a lot to fit in so I thought while I don’t have a horse at Small Tour, this is the time to do it. Alex: When I was upgrading I could practice judge those tests using videos which helped me fit it in, but the rule has changed now!

I did the old Fastrack, went in at List 3, then 3A, did 2 and then jumped to 1, as I was impatient.

QWHAT BENEFITS HAVE YOU SEEN FROM ONLINE TRAINING AND TESTING?

Alice: It’s much more convenient, although you don’t always get such an easy discussion online. Alex: The training was a lot less clear, with less obvious paths under the old system.

While it was good that you were judging a live class it was often impractical. And there would be variations between one master judge and another across the country. You get a better report at the end of the exam on the areas to improve – it’s not just a pass.

It’s also very doable for riders – by the time you’ve ridden eight or nine horses, taught clients and swept the yard you have no brain power left in the evening for planning training dates.

QHAVE YOU FOUND THAT YOUR AGE OR PERCEIVED LACK OF EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN A BARRIER?

Alex: I found it very difficult to start with, as I was in my early 20s. On a panel it was hard to have an open discussion and to be accepted, although this was the early days of Fastracking, and it was only the bare bones of the system. But it was a good incentive to be a better judge.

Alice: I only did the assessment in November, but everyone has been lovely, and judges have been really supportive. They do want people with riding experience to become judges. Hopefully attitudes are moving on – It’s very easy for competitors to have a moan about judges and say ‘what do they know’ but if you’ve got riders actively competing at Grand Prix and they are out there judging it should bring more respect.

Alex: These days everyone is lovely and I think BD has done a good job of highlighting that judging is only your opinion and you shouldn’t be afraid to express it. The result is that people are less defensive if someone disagrees with them.

Alice: I agree – I was chatting with Andrea Smith and saying how nervous I was and she said that you have to judge by what you see and stand by it. If you can do that hand on heart, no-one can disagree with you. That gave me a lot of confidence.

QWHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BEING A JUDGE TO YOUR COACHING AND RIDING, AND VICE

VERSA?

Alice: It sounds arrogant, but I’ve learned a lot more than expected. It opened my eyes to what would be the judge’s first thought when seeing the horse. You learn that overriding impression which is what goes in the collectives. You can apply so much to your coaching – I said to someone when I was teaching the other day “I’d give that pirouette a seven and this would be my comment.” Before I wouldn’t have had the confidence to say that.

Riding brings the technical knowledge and the understanding of training. Quite often the reason that people get stuck going up the levels is because there’s a hole in the training somewhere. Having done the riding I can see where that hole is to help with the collectives comments.

Alex: It’s helped to focus the training for my own horses – any correction can be translated to something that’s better in the ring. It won’t just feel better but also look better to the judge.

In the judge’s box, you appreciate how difficult it is, you’re on the rider’s side. But it can also work against the rider as there are aspects you notice having ridden at that level. If someone is coming round for a flying change and it’s late behind, rather than just commenting ‘late behind’ you can point the rider towards the set up –‘tense through the corner’ for example.

YOU WILL HAVE GROWN UP WITH TECH, BUT HOW DO YOU FEEL IT WILL BENEFIT THE SPORT?

Alice: I love apps that give you the score without having to wait around, but you do need to check that scores on tablets have been entered correctly.

Alex: Live scoring helps to make dressage more of a spectator sport as it adds to the excitement and gets spectators more involved in the class.

WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES FOR JUDGES GOING FORWARD?

Both: Social media!

Alex: The issue is not so much giving bad scores but more about giving high scores and people questioning that. We have to educate spectators that we start from a ten and the marks reflect that – that the horse is really good over its back, the transitions are amazing, so that’s a ten. It’s swingy, it’s loose, maybe it’s a bit short in its frame, so having started from a ten, that then becomes an eight.

Everyone takes from the sport, we earn money from coaching etc, so it’s good to give something back.

Spectators may question ‘why’s that got an eight when it’s so short in its neck?’, but it’s because everything else is so good. Judges may face pressure to change their judging style – come down harder on some things, give way to outside views and let that influence their mark. But as long as you are judging to the overriding principles – it should look harmonious, it should look easy – then you have to be brave enough to stick to those principles.

Alice: I think Alex has hit the nail on the head – it’s very easy to sit behind a screen and criticise, but I feel when I’m sitting in the judges hut or watching a test it’s a different experience. When you are judging, it’s very much movement by movement, whereas when I watch a test I’ll get an overall impression. You know what you want or expect from a test at that level, and like Alex says, start with a ten and work down from that. People can focus on one thing that they didn’t think was ideal and moan about that.

QWHY INVEST THE TIME AND MONEY IN BECOMING A JUDGE?

Alice: It’s part of looking forward – no-one rides forever, at some stage your body gives up but for me it’s part of developing the sport, giving something back. As Alex says, you get £1.50 per test, you certainly don’t do it for the money. But if we don’t have experienced, quality judges we won’t have a sport. It’s good that we do it for the love of the sport, because for me that’s what it’s all about.

Alex: Everyone takes from the sport, we earn money from coaching etc, so it’s good to give something back. It benefits my coaching and training, and if something happened tomorrow and I couldn’t ride, it gives me a future in the sport.

QSO WHAT’S NEXT?

Alex: I have to wait three years to take the FEI judges test, but I probably won’t go for it until I’ve more or less stopped riding – it’s very hard to do that and compete internationally. I may do tutor judging to help train other judges; it’s good to have more rider judges so that trainee judges can benefit from that as well.

From a riding perspective I’ve got a lovely little horse that’s just about to go and start Grand Prix, and I’ve got some nice horses for Mount St John. I’d like to get on some senior teams and the ultimate would be a medal, but there’s a lot of people going for that dream. You can lay out a rough plan, but can’t sacrifice your entire life for it – your top horse can go lame etc. The good thing about dressage is it’s a marathon and not a sprint – some people think it’s a sprint and get upset when it doesn’t come together quickly.

Alice: I’d like to do List 1 long term, along with BDCC Level 4, but it’s a big undertaking.

I’ve got two at Grand Prix and some really nice young horses; I’ve been very open that we’ve had a rough time with horses so I’ve lost a bit of the passion for competing. I do want to ride, but the fire for competing is not there. Yes, it’s a career, but it’s also a passion and you have to enjoy it. I will be back, I’m just not sure when.

Judging makes me feel like I’m still really involved, obviously I’ve also got my coaching and at times like this it’s really good to have it.

The Equissage Pulse Para Winter Championships, held at Myerscough College in February, welcomed a wealth of Britain’s top Gold, Silver and Bronze combinations as well as those competing in the inaugural Winter Para Freestyle Championships. The Gold sections featured many familiar combinations as campaigns for the Paralympics get underway. Sophie Wells and her 2023 European Championships ride, Lady Joseph Trust’s LJT Egebjerggards Samoa (St Schufro x Gribaldi), claimed the Grade V Gold on 72.07%.

Seeking specialist help I

If your vet refers your horse to another practice, what does it entail? Emma Penny asks the experts.

f you own a horse, chances are you will be on first name terms with your vet – but there are times when they might want to refer your horse to another practice, specialist or hospital. In human terms, it’s similar to being referred by your GP or primary care to a consultant, but unlike humans, it’s not always because your horse requires more complicated investigation.

According to Jonathan Anderson (pictured right), clinical director of Yorkshire-based Rainbow Equine Vets, a referral can sometimes be made simply due to time constraints. He specialises in lameness and poor performance, and says that these types of problems can often take a day or more to look at. With on-site stabling, horses can stay as long as required.

“I am in our hospital almost all of the time, though we do also have ambulatory vets who are out seeing clients. I have more time to look at multiple horses in a day when they come on-site, and for some cases, the cost of having your vet coming out to the yard multiple times for something could soon cost far more than being referred.”

Jonathan has done a lot of specialist surgical training and has worked extensively in the USA. But even as a specialist, he says one of the advantages of being referred to a hospital is that he has colleagues he can call upon for their opinion.

“When your horse goes to a hospital, it will be a team approach. We have a group of riders as part of our team, so owners can see how their horse looks when it is being ridden if it has come in for a poor performance, for instance. There will be multiple sets of eyes looking at the case and collaborating,

including people who specialise in areas such as reading x-rays or MRIs, all working to objectively analyse everything.”

But the team approach includes involving your own vet, something Jonathan is keen to emphasise. “Usually horses would be referred by their own vet, but there is nothing to stop anyone going direct to a hospital or specialist. We would always ask people to let their own vet know as a professional courtesy. We can also get a pertinent history from your vet, and they may well be an important part of any ongoing care.”

While Jonathan works for a large hospital practice, there are other types of referral practice, explains the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA). “As with general practice, there are different types of referral practice, which include single-vet, single discipline concerns, referral practices associated with first opinion practices and large, multispecialist, multi-discipline hospital practices. Most of the veterinary schools run teaching hospitals with referral clinics.”

One of the single-vet, single-discipline concerns is The Equine Eye Clinic, run by equine ophthalmology consultant Tim Knott; his specialism means horses can now have advanced procedures such as cataract surgery.

“I learnt my specialty in practice, training with human eye surgeons to learn skills such as cataract surgery and by making links with those few interested vets around the world. This international community of ophthalmologists has allowed me to learn more that I’d ever have done without them.

“Most equine vets have a much better understanding and confidence in diagnosing and treating eye diseases than vets who specialise in other species, meaning that horse owners can usually be confident in their local vet team’s support, especially in the acute

phase of any eye problem. Local vet teams will start to need help from someone like myself when specialist equipment is needed for diagnosis and treatment.”

He sees cases from all over the UK and advises on cases remotely from all over the world, and like Jonathan, emphasises the need to work with your vet: “A good relationship with your local vet is essential for the long term success of any eye problem as they will usually be your first port of call with problems and be essential in long term monitoring and maintenance.”

Costs can vary, says BEVA. “It’s reasonable to expect an approximate cost estimate to include both initial consultation costs and a range of possible further investigation and/ or treatment costs.

Recommendation is always a good starting point, says BEVA, adding that in some cases ‘a multi-disciplined centre has the ability to consider, evaluate and treat the whole patient. This can be especially valuable in more complex cases where several body systems may be involved, requiring more than one specialist discipline’.

Tim adds: “There is no obligation to follow a recommendation from your vet. They may not be aware of all of the options for referral so never be afraid to suggest a different referral option to your vet.”

If your horse or pony is referred to a specialist, what impact does that have on your insurance?

HOW DO REFERRALS WORK FROM AN INSURANCE PERSPECTIVE?

When claims involving a vet referral are submitted to us, they are handled in the same way as any other vet fee claim. Pre-authorisation is not required, nor is it provided – we encourage owners to choose the best option for their horse, in conjunction with their vet.

To assess the claim, a completed claim form is required, filled in by the owner and attending vet, alongside an up-to-date copy of the horse’s veterinary history and invoices relating to the claim.

Once assessed, payment can be made directly to you or the vet practice, but check what the referral practice is happy with. It may have different procedures such as paying a deposit or settling the invoice before collecting your horse. Often, the referral practice will ask which insurance company you have cover with and advise based on this whether they are happy to be paid directly or not.

WHAT WILL INSURERS PAY FOR (OR NOT) IN TERMS OF REFERRALS?

Every referral is different. If a referral fee is charged, this can be included in the claim but, as standard across all vet fee claims, your insurer will not cover the costs for a second opinion (i.e. repeat

diagnostic imaging procedures if the procedure has previously been performed by another vet in relation to the same incident being claimed for), costs incurred for preparing reports or claim forms, transportation costs and/or livery fees (if the horse has to go to a rehab livery for example).

An indication of treatment cost and time frame from the referral practice will help you assess whether your insurance cover will be sufficient or if you need to be prepared to foot part of the bill.

CAN YOU CHOOSE TO GO STRAIGHT TO A SPECIALIST, OR IS YOUR INSURANCE MORE LIKELY TO PAY OUT IF YOUR VET HAS SUGGESTED THE REFERRAL IS NEEDED?

The owner can simply choose to go to another practice if it is decided that is best for their horse. As long we receive the history for any vet practices the horse has been seen by or registered to when the claim is submitted, we can assess it.

Where another practice is involved, we just require confirmation of whether this is a referral, even if given verbally by the registered vet, or if you have chosen a different vet practice for another reason.

Tests boost training

In our rst issue of the year we looked at the background behind the new tests. Now Jane Kidd delves deeper into how the tests will help develop horse and rider training.

THE NEW TESTS

What has made a small group of trainers, riders, judges and office staff spend days, weeks and months giving us a new collection of tests? It is because tests are so much more than a means of getting results at our shows. They are a major influence on the training of the horses and help riders and coaches to understand what is needed to help advancement up the grades.

Test Committee Chairman Jenny Ward explains: “The overall aim is to help form harmonious and equal partnerships and correct training.”

International rider Becky Moody, a very active member of the Tests Committee, gives an additional perspective: “Riders can approach the tests with the outlook of recognising how they can improve the horse. We wanted to help riders and trainers into a better place, it’s not just about looking at the tests on a sheet.”

THE BASICS

Paul Hayler, former Training Director, emphasises: “The fundamental reference point in updating the tests was the Scales of Training.” The steps were:

1. To clarify the appropriate scales of training for each level. To decide what scales and to what degree of difficulty was appropriate for the tests at each of the levels: Preliminary, Novice, Elementary, Medium, Advanced Medium and Advanced.

The tests are not so much a way of sorting who the judge/s thought went best on the day but aimed at educating riders, coaches and judges so that they can follow and promote better training based on the Scales of Training. Tests are systematically fitted into a pathway that is the result of centuries of developing the best way of training horses.

2. The second was the movements. To decide what movements and to what degree of difficulty would best encourage the pursuit of the scales that had been decided appropriate to that level. Becky expresses it well when she says: “We looked at each movement in terms of how it could improve the horse and whether that was what was needed at that level.”

Taking Elementary tests as an example of these basics, horses should be ready for lateral movements but starting with the easiest, leg yield. To make it as undemanding as possible, the trot work that is before each leg yield in Test 1 leads to the horse being in the best possible position to start the leg yield and then to follow a shallow line to the long side.

As the tests get higher in the numbers, closer to 6, the degree of difficulty has been increased both in the

approach and the line of the leg yield becoming more acute, more demanding. This makes it more helpful in building up the suppleness and responsiveness to the rider’s inside leg, important elements in the ability to do the more difficult shoulder-in.

THE COMPLETE PICTURE

With these principles in mind, the committee looked at the existing tests to decide which complied with them, which could be altered a little to make them comply and which should be discarded. New ones were written to fill in any gaps and ensure that at each level there are six progressively more difficult tests culminating in the number 6 being the test for the National Championships, and 5 for the Area Festival Championships.

Paul explains what is wanted: “A more methodical, stronger pathway to the training up the levels, giving firmer foundations.”

SECURE PLATFORM

This entailed establishing clear understanding of what was sufficient competence at one level to try tests in the next higher level. As Paul says: “What is needed is a secure platform before going on to the next level.”

There are plenty of benefits to establishing this concept, but Paul feels strongly: “There will be more horses coming up through the levels. Horses will not suffer from being taken up a level for which they were not prepared. More horses will be happier in their training with these better guidelines.”

CONNECTIONS

Happier horses are a clear benefit of riders knowing that until the scores are good in Test 6 they lack the competence needed to train for the next level. Coaches and judges will also benefit from this. Clarity of what is required at the level helps all those on what Paul describes as: “Dressage’s one big circle – riders, judges and trainers. They can all work together.”

Peter Storr, Judges Director says: “Tests are a check on the training and the new tests help to show when the horses are going on the right way and ready to move up the levels.”

PROGRESSIVE

One hears much about the importance of progressive training. In the new tests, every exercise at each level can be a preparation for what is the next more difficult exercise and movement. This makes for a more fluent advancement towards the advanced work. Following the tests’ pathway will make it clearer to riders and trainers how they can keep a fluency to their progressive training.

FLOW

Jenny says that the intention of the design is to help the horse to flow through the test. The sequence of exercises between movements are not a time to relax, but if they are done well they are opportunities to prepare for the next movement. Before a shoulder-in there might be leg yield to develop suppleness and responsiveness to the rider’s inside leg. The corner and then a 10m circle help to build up these assets along with the collection needed for the hindquarters to stay on the track and not escape to the outside as in leg yield.

NUMBERING

To make this clear at each level Test 1 is the easiest and the highest number, usually 6, is the most difficult. Ideally riders start their time at a level with 1 and know they are ready for the next level when getting good scores at the highest number, usually 6.

DIRECTIVES

Alongside each movement are directives that help the rider and the judge to recognise the important elements in that movement. They draw attention to what riders should focus on when training and competing that movement and what judges should be looking for in their assessment.

It was left to Pat Watts, a member of the Judges Committee who has a meticulous brain, to ensure the directives were consistent and to keep as the priority the Scales of Training. For example, on a 15m circle the important elements are not only the size, but the rhythm and suppleness.

Regularity and rhythm, the first in the scales of training, are also the first point in the directives. Also with straightness being only the fifth concept in the progression through the Scales of Training it is not asked for at the early levels.

Examples of other areas that needed to be noted included covering the whole exercise so when asked to go down the centre line the movement is not just what happened on the centre line but also in the turn.

Pat also drew attention to accounting for there being equal weight to movements on both reins.

COLLECTIVES

Jenny Ward explains the committee’s desire for the tests to reflect concern for the welfare of the horse.

“It was felt that co-operation would better reflect dressage riding today so it has been substituted for submission. Co-operation speaks more of a partnership between horse and rider being defined through all the levels as: attention and confidence, harmony, lightness and ease of movements, acceptance of the bridle and lightness of the forehand.

There has been no change in other collectives that –like the directives – draw attention firstly to regularity and rhythm.

These new tests are giving riders an additional training aid, helping trainers to see the way forward for their pupils, and judges to get a clearer picture of what it means for tests to be a test of the training. Overall the Scales of Training being their foundation strengthens their impact on a way of going that brings fulfilment of the FEI Principles of Dressage to develop the horse into a Happy Athlete through harmonious education.

Spring antics

Does your horse turn into a crazed livewire or a sleepy donkey when Spring arrives?

Helen Triggs looks at the role of nutrition in equine wellbeing and behaviour.

Many horses take the changes of season in their stride but for others it’s a real challenge to maintain their equilibrium.

Spring can also have a serious effect on equine health too as forage is richer in nutrients and can be more serious than your horse just having a jolly buck or two.

The most common serious issues in Spring are colic and laminitis, according to Helen Bickerton, BVSc MRCVS, of Valley Equine Hospital in Lambourn. “We see more colic cases, particularly in horses that have been kept in over winter and fed dry forage. The spring grass is relatively high in sugars and

starches and tastes delicious! Many horses will get mild digestive upsets as their gut bacteria aren’t adapted to the grass. There is increased gas production and this can cause spasmodic colic.

“Laminitis tends to occur in those horses with a predisposition towards it,” says Helen. “Horses with EMS (Equine Metabolic Syndrome) have a higher than normal circulatory level of insulin.”

Helen recommends that any dietary changes in the Spring are made gradually. “Slowly extend the length of turnout and consider giving hay and haylage in the field at first. It’s important to make changes gradually so the gut has time to adapt.

“Horses with EMS need to be managed carefully – even a small amount of Spring grass can be too much. In some horses it may be wise to measure insulin levels to gauge the risk. Managing grass intake can be difficult. Restricting the duration of turnout isn’t very effective – horses quickly learn and then scoff as much as they can! Strip grazing can help with greedy horses.”

Alterations to the horse’s bucket feed will depend on their body condition. Assess whether your horse has come out of winter underweight or carrying a little too much weight. “Body condition scoring, using a numerical scale, can be a useful way of objectively assessing condition by looking at the horse’s neck, ribs and rump,” says Emma Short, Nutritionist at Baileys Horse Feeds.

“You need to feel through a thick coat, which can cover the true picture, whilst a good step back in the daylight will allow an overall assessment. Having established your horse’s current condition, the next step is to decide whether that is how you would like him to stay or whether you need to make changes. For this you will also need to consider the work the horse is expected to undertake and the level of fitness he needs to attain.

“The topic of calming down a fizzy horse, or perking up a dull one is quite complex,” says Kate Hore, Head Nutritionist at NAF, “Spring certainly could be an influencer, particularly when the soil hits 5degC, and the sugar rich, spring grass starts to grow. This often coincides with increased turnout, better weather, doing some more ‘fun’ riding etc. All of these things can certainly help horses feel the joys of spring. Spring grass can often cause digestive upset, through being rich, high in moisture and –essentially – a change to the diet. For all these reasons you might see digestive discomfort and signs such as loose droppings.

“If the horse is feeling a little dull, we’d advise taking advantage of the longer days and better weather to vary your horse’s workload. Quite simply they get bored with always schooling, and working on different surfaces and doing different things can help them really enjoy their work, as well as strengthening muscles and tendons against injury. Vary it as much as possible.

Once we’ve made sure our horses are pain free and enjoying some variety in their work, then we need to ensure the diet is balanced, but not over-providing. Weight gain is a significant problem, even in sport horses – Warmbloods particularly seem to live on fresh air – and so feeding a concentrated balancer will make sure they’re getting all they need, without having to carry round excess weight which can slow them down.”

Emma agrees.

“Balancers are really useful, at this time of year, as they allow you to provide the nutrients lacking in forage and grazing (even spring grass is lacking in key minerals!), without the calories associated with a mix or cube. Horses who’ve been on the full recommended amount of these feeds, over winter, may no longer need the calorie levels they supply but underfeeding them reduces intakes of essential nutrients as well as calories. Topping up the diet with a balancer, in this instance, is ideal as you can add protein, vitamins and minerals back into the diet, to ensure it remains balanced, while still controlling calorie intake.”

She recommends differentiating between the type of haylage fed. “High fibre or timothy haylage is suitable for the majority of horses but if the horse is in hard work or a little dull, then Alfalfa or rye grass haylage have higher protein levels and will provide more condition.

The most common serious issues in Spring are colic and laminitis.

“Dull horses may need more energy. Adding oil to forage gives access to slow release energy. It’s important to look at the whole diet as they may need more energy from a less starchy product.”

Another route to consider to energise dull horses is strategic feeding. Nicola Tyler, Nutrition Director of TopSpec says: “To provide energy when it is needed, but without weight gain, we

A good quality dust free haylage will complement a balanced diet, aid respiratory health, and support performance. During the production of haylage, a naturally occurring

recommend using a small amount (100g) of a higher energy feed, 1 to 1.5 hours before the extra energy is needed. The reason we suggest this regime is it takes 1 to 1.5 hours after feeding for the feed to reach the small intestine where the starch and sugars are broken down to glucose and passed into the bloodstream.

“Glucose is carried in the bloodstream to the brain and helps horses or ponies on low hard feed intakes to think more forward for a limited time. The reason this time is limited is because horses have a feedback mechanism involving insulin which returns blood glucose levels to normal. After a further two hours, no effect of feeding will be seen.”

While food intake undoubtedly plays a major role, it’s also important to rule out any other issues which could be affecting the horse’s performance such as saddle and dental comfort. Spring is the ideal time to take stock of every aspect of your horse’s life and implement strategies to ensure a happy and healthy summer.

Hunter is a 15-year-old Irish sports horse and this normally placid chap undergoes a complete transformation in Spring which his owner, Hannah Addis, has had to learn to manage.

“He becomes really sensitive to both his surroundings and physical touch,” explains Hannah. “He becomes very cold-backed and reactive, highly strung and on high alert. He becomes more vocal and calls to his field friends. He’s got less patience and tap-dances at the mounting block!

“I’ve never been able to really pin down the cause and have tried various supplements. Usually, I give him a couple of weeks off ridden work once he begins to show changes in his behaviour and just work him in hand.

“I only feed him balancer and chaff and remove any type of conditioning feed. I’ve found that pure magnesium helps and I start him on it in March.”

On the move

Horseboxes come in a plethora of shapes, sizes and designs, and choosing the right one for you and your horse’s needs is important. Stephanie Bateman discovers the key considerations and absolute must-haves when it comes to purchasing larger horseboxes.

In recent years, the compact 3.5t horsebox has become all the rage and is great if you are a one-horse owner, but for those with one or more larger horses, you’ll likely require something bigger like a 7.5t horsebox.

So, what should you look for when considering a 7.5t horsebox?

“The three most important things when buying a 7.5t horsebox are payload, tilt cab and a new chassis,” says Tom Janion, Equi-Trek CEO. “Moving up from a smaller horsebox to a 7.5t one really highlights the importance of a new or low mileage chassis. If something goes wrong, you can be looking at thousands of pounds to get it back on the road with a larger horsebox.”

Payload is also a very important consideration as, just because you are upgrading it,

doesn’t necessarily mean you will be able to carry an extra horse or lots of extra equipment – make sure you find a vehicle with a payload to suit your needs.

“A tilt cab is also a must so that maintenance and repairs can be carried out easily by mechanical engineers – otherwise you would need to find someone with the facilities to lift the lorry on ramps over a pit which will be very costly and more difficult to arrange,” explains Tom. “You will also need a tachograph fitted even though you don’t need to use it (it will

limit your speed to 56mph) and make sure the vehicle comes with a plating certificate as you will need this for your annual test.”

MOD CONS

Horsebox designs are constantly being upgraded, but what are the latest mod cons? A key one is lightweight and electric ramps.

When upgrading to a 7.5 tonne lorry, make sure it has the payload that you need.

The three most important things when buying a 7.5t horsebox are payload, tilt cab and a new chassis.

“Our electric ramps have a manual override so they can still be used if the electrics fail, and safety loading doors are also included,” adds Tom. “All of our vehicles have European Type Approved Seatbelts, aluminium planked floors for maximum strength and heavy-duty Dunlop rubber coated flooring to prevent the horse from slipping. Make sure you purchase a vehicle that has EU Type Approval as this is the only way to know it is properly certified by the authorities.”

For anyone buying a second-hand horsebox, make sure the vehicle has always been a horsebox, that is has a tilt cab and that the chassis is low mileage.

“The right horsebox must have a payload that is right for the individual, taking into account how many horses they will travel in the box and what other items of equipment are carried regularly that will add to the payload,” Tom says. “Also, if you are going to be spending a lot of time away from home make sure the living accommodation is up to standard and will provide a comfortable and convenient home from home.”

Tom also suggests ensuring it has ‘aluminium flooring, a decent amount of storage and a ramp that isn’t too steep’. >

It’s important to consider the weight that your horsebox will need to carry.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED TO DRIVE A 7.5T LORRY?

To drive a 7.5t horsebox, you will need a Category C1 licence which enables you to operate vehicles of between 3.5t and 7.5t.

These weight limits are measured in terms of maximum

authorised mass (MAM). In other words, the total weight of the vehicle and its cargo when fully loaded. This is important if you plan to use a horsebox capable of carrying enough horses to exceed the 7.5t MAM. If you go heavier, you will need a Category C licence.

CASE STUDY: HOME FROM HOME

Young horse specialists Antonia and Tim Brown (pictured) own a five horse 18t Scania horsebox built by Maudsley Horse boxes of Darwin, Lancashire.

“One of the biggest plus sides to the Scania lorry is that it has an automatic transmission and air suspension which gives the horses a lovely, smooth ride,” says Tim. “We travel a lot of young horses and the build quality of this body has stood up to the unpredictable actions of the young horse when travelling.”

From a design point of view, Antonia loves the internal layout and home comforts.

“My lorry isn’t posh but it’s functional,” says Stef. “To save money, I upgraded the living myself for £200 and upcycled things from my old lorry. I’ve competed abroad in this lorry, so it just goes to show that you don’t need a posh lorry, only a nice horse.”

she says. “The general beautiful construction and design of the Maudsley box both interior and exterior has meant we have had very little maintenance, and putting in a wine cooler when we designed the living is of course extremely useful! The living is really comfortable and cosy. The heating runs off the diesel and keeps the living and bathroom really warm with towel rails which are great for drying clothes on wet days.

“The Luton is very spacious too which is a real bonus as I’m very claustrophobic and some of them aren’t so roomy.

“On the outside, we designed our lockers carefully and we have an outside sink for tack cleaning, plus, our lift-up locker has a detachable hook so you can happily clean bridles in the rain under cover. People always comment on what a good idea it is and we use it all the time.”

FIRST, GET SOME GOOD IMAGES

HHorseQuest: ‘A picture is worth a thousand words’ is all too true when it comes to selling horses. Nine times out of 10 when you’re scrolling through the adverts, it’s the picture that catches your attention.

Professional photos are great, but they’re not essential. A fair weather day and a decent smartphone will do the trick. But the key is putting some effort into the preparation. For example, consider where you’re taking the photo – a nice neutral uncluttered background that contrasts with the horse – it could be a brick wall, leafy hedge or just the bright sky!

Consider turnout – plaits, hoof oil, a clean bridle – these things all go a long way.

FFroxfield Dressage Horses: We try to use a variety of different photos to highlight the strengths and positives of the horse and attract as many buyers as possible. If they’re great to hack, show some photos of them hacking through fields. If you have any competition shots, make sure to include them and preferably also a side-on conformation shot so potential buyers can see the type and build of your horse.

ACTION SHOTS

HorseQuest: Be critical of the photos – is the photo quality sufficient (i.e. not a screenshot from a video) and does it show true engagement?

If they’re competition shots, make sure you’ve got permission from the photographer/you have purchased the rights.

FFroxfield Dressage Horses: We always aim to show the horse off to their best. We aim for an uphill picture with the horse showing a correct way of moving (quiet in the mouth, a nice straight rein to the bit showing a correct contact, an engaged hindleg stepping under their body). All of this will be dependent on the horse’s level of training. In canter, you want to aim to capture the photo at the point when the horses inside hindleg is about to touch the ground. In the trot you want to aim for the moment when the outside hindleg is about to touch the ground with the outside front leg about to leave the ground.

VIDEOS = VIEWINGS

HHorseQuest: Ridden photos are not essential if you can back up a great conformation shot with a proper sales video. You can tell a lot more about paces from a video than a photo! This is what the buyer wants to see before they consider getting in the car. You might think your horse has Grand Prix

potential, but the buyer wants to see that for themselves, and they’ll get the best sense of that from a video.

We would go so far as to recommend not putting an advert online until you have a video ready.

It should show the horse in all gaits on each rein, and most importantly movements relevant to the level they’re training or competing at. For example, you wouldn’t advertise a horse training at FEI level and only show walk, trot and canter. Ideally it would also show the horse/ pony in more than one venue – at home, arena hire/competing.

We have seen some great videos that also include some on-the-ground footage too, so you get an idea of the horse’s personality and how they’re handled. And if you can trot them up too, even better.

THE SELL

HHorseQuest: Where an advert has bullet points by the side of the photo, these can be used for your highlights.

1. Competition level / suitability e.g. Super Advanced Schoolmaster

2. Any notable breeding

3. Results / BD points

4. Descriptive point e.g. elastic paces and super hindleg

This, coupled with the photo and the price should give the reader enough compelling information to decide whether to read on and find out more.

TELL THEIR STORY

Froxfield Dressage Horses:

FEmphasise the horse’s strengths, include any especially great competition results, highest scores or major competitions competed at. Include the level at which they are training, what movements they are comfortable with and up to what level they have competed.

You could also include their BD registered name so potential buyers can check their results.

Don’t overload them with every single competition result as we want to keep the potential buyer engaged.

For ponies it is important to note if they have a life height certificate.

IDENTIFY YOUR CUSTOMER

HHorseQuest: Describing whether a horse is suitable for an amateur or professional is personal choice, but it’s important to make sure nobody’s time is wasted. Good examples set out what the horse’s ideal next home could look like, or in what scenario you feel they’d thrive.

The best way to work out how much to put your horse up for is to look at the horses that have been sold that are similar to yours and how much they sold for. Ultimately the more people your horse appeals to the more easily it will sell. If you are needing to sell quickly, it’s sometimes helpful to go for the lower end of what you’re thinking pricewise. If you’re not in a hurry, you can take a risk and price higher. Don’t put ONO if you’re not happy to take a significant decrease on the price. Anything that comes up on the vetting can also lead to the price being dropped to accommodate for any findings.

BE READY TO SELL

HHorseQuest: If you’ve written a good advert and priced it right, the phone should start ringing. Don’t put an advert online when you’re too busy at work to take calls, going on holiday or not very available to facilitate viewings.

Our sustainable sport

British Dressage launched its sustainability strategy at the end of 2023 with a pledge to ‘provide support and guidance to members and stakeholders keen to do the right thing and protect our precious world’.

The strategy sets out sustainability goals for BD as an organisation and for its members. It was devised by equine sustainability consultants White Griffin and director Ruth Dancer explains:

“The first step is to understand that as a sport we are impacted by climate and talk about it more. When we can recognise the impacts of what we do and see that as a community we can take part in mitigation and adaptation, we can make a change.”

It’s easy to feel relatively immune to climate change in the rural setting that equestrianism enjoys, yet extreme weather impacts competitions leading to cancellations and can present welfare challenges for horse owners. The supply chain for feed and bedding is also threatened by extreme weather, along with soil degradation and water shortages.

Horsemanship is highly reliant on water, from keeping horses hydrated to maintaining riding surfaces, and small actions such as being vigilant to prevent taps running with buckets overflowing or checking pipes for leaks can make a significant difference.

“We don’t see water as the precious resource that it is; whereas equestrian businesses in other parts of the world wouldn’t dream of wasting water in the way that we do,” comments Ruth. “Many equestrian establishments are on a meter, so making sure no water is wasted also saves money.”

The strategy has identified a number of areas where horse owners can make positive impact.

“We may feel that as landowners we’re already looking after the environment, but we have an opportunity to do more,” explains Ruth. “That could include keeping grass swards longer and growing more diverse species, planting hedges and maintaining hedgerows to offer

Reducing waste is an area that has captured the public imagination, and Ruth points out that suppliers of equestrian products now have more options to cut waste in their manufacturing processes.

“Duralock is a great example of this – not only has it switched production to using recycled plastic for its fencing, but the company also collects old plastic fencing to use in the process.”

Horse owners need to adopt practices that are commonplace in their home on the yard, she suggests.

“Whilst many people diligently separate their waste at home, this is less commonplace on yards. If we can apply the same principles of prioritising recycling, both through the supply chain and within establishments like livery yards and riding schools, the industry as a whole can make a difference.”

Electric cars have gained in popularity significantly and the technology is in place for electric horseboxes to become the norm in the future, comments Ruth, but in the meantime common sense actions such as sharing transport to shows could be considered. And if a trainer can travel to the yard on one day to teach several clients rather than a number of horseboxes travelling to the trainer, then that’s also an improvement.

Many horse owners factor in the environment when building or upgrading their facilities at home, but while individuals can advise on solar for building, sustainable grass mixtures for paddocks and weather-resilient arena surfaces, there would certainly seem to be an opportunity for an equestrian sustainability consultant to look at the property as a whole where future developments are concerned, she points out.

White Griffin has joined forces with the Farm Carbon Toolkit, in partnership with Derby College Group, Hartpury University and Sparsholt Group, to create a carbon footprint calculator that will enable equestrian businesses and horse owners to assess their carbon footprint and identify areas for improvement.

“Up to now we have had no clear data about the carbon footprint of the equestrian industry. Gathering information will help identify actions that are damaging, change practices to help prevent harm to our environment and provide a positive driving force to environmentalism.”

The Equine Carbon Calculator is available free of charge to members who create an account and add information according to a template as they go around the yard.

“You can populate it with data such as electricity use, for example, which is easily obtainable from the energy supplier’s bill, and this is converted into a carbon value –in tonnes of CO2 equivalent,” explains Ruth.

“When all the data is entered, the calculator produces a chart of the equestrian holding’s carbon footprint showing the contribution of various actions such as diesel used, new fencing installed etc. It also calculates the carbon stored by the yard, influenced by the type of land, how much woodland there is etc.”

Later this year, a resources hub – also free – will be added to the calculator which will offer guidance on how to tackle areas of concern.

“So if the calculator highlights electricity use,” explains Ruth, “This tool will provide a fact sheet on how to reduce energy consumption and how renewables might be introduced. The goal is to cut costs for horse owners and create a liveable future.”

She points out that with a busy schedule, yard owners may be unaware of factors such as water use, and if they can see where and when it is used, then the Equine Carbon Calculator will help businesses take action.

White Griffin intends to gather data across the equine disciplines and horse owning community. GDPR compliance ensures that the data is anonymised and the aim is to build profiles of the industry as a whole.

“We want to get a picture of land use in equestrianism and understand the hotspots. If we find that 60% of our carbon footprint is transport for example, then this could help gain government support for sustainable transport in the industry. The more we know, the more equestrian businesses can help to drive change.”

Considering the environment in our pasture management is a positive step.

A stable foundation

We move to looking at the rider’s stability and how it in uences the aids and their effectiveness in this part of Andrea Oakes’ series about the basics of the dressage position.

Alongside suppleness, an essential building block for a quiet and effective seat is stability – a word usually associated with the state of being firmly fixed or unlikely to move or change. In the saddle, we’re sitting on an ever-shifting base, absorbing and controlling huge amounts of energy as the horse propels himself forwards, sideways and upwards. So what does it mean to be stable, in this context, and how can we achieve stability without stiffness?

“Stability is created through symmetry, balance and core strength,” explains Advanced dressage rider and qualified personal trainer Nickie Maddaford. “These qualities combine to enable the rider to maintain

posture in the saddle throughout all paces. Without stability, you’ll be unable to apply correct and effective aids or keep an even and consistent rein contact.

“Your weight distribution and movement will have mechanical effects on the horse and his paces,” Nickie continues. “Sitting without stability and balance will affect how he can use his spine and move or load his limbs, and in turn how he uses the rest of his body. A rider who has good stability, balance and symmetry, with stamina and true core strength, will enhance how the horse uses his body and therefore the quality of his paces and movements.”

Nickie explains that some riders have a natural degree of stability in the saddle, while others have to work harder.

“It comes down to a mixture of how we’re made as individuals and what we do in our daily lives,

off the horse,” she says. “Some imbalances are the result of riding over many years, or riding multiple horses, but others are skeletal and relate to how we were born. Most people have one leg shorter than the other, but our pelvis does a fabulous job of accommodating this by tilting to the side of the shorter leg to enable us to walk without a limp. While we might not notice this natural adjustment as we walk around, a horse most certainly will when we’re in the saddle and our weight is distributed unevenly through the pelvis.

“Signs of pelvic imbalance include feeling as if the saddle is slipping to one side, or as if one stirrup is longer, which can be viewed from the ground as the rider sitting lopsided, collapsing one side of the waist or lifting one heel,” she adds. “Movements might be more difficult to

perform in one direction, or the horse will be more supple on one rein. When there’s imbalance or asymmetry, the body will take compensatory action elsewhere. More advanced riders are more naturally tuned in to such imbalances and correct them, but even the best may be compensating somewhere –which will affect the horse.”

While Nickie emphasises the stabilising role of the rider’s core, she’s quick to point out that an effective core is not simply a matter of having ‘abs of steel’.

“Your core encircles your middle, like a hoop around a barrel, and is made up of stabilising muscles that kick in as necessary to stop you falling over,” she says. “These are incredibly important for a rider, because the horse is always moving – so your body is constantly making little stabilising reactions. As riders, our bodies must be quick and

conditioned, which means not only developing fitness but improving our neurological pathways so that our muscles fire when we need them.

“To be stable and balanced in the saddle, our muscles must be ‘switched on’ to react and work independently, top to bottom, left to right, front to back and diagonally, especially in trot when the horse’s legs work in diagonal pairs. Our bodies are not used to absorbing movement in a diagonal manner, with force and speed, which is why rising trot on the correct diagonal is more comfortable for the rider and a great help to the horse’s balance.”

Simple gym exercises and matwork classes can address imbalances and challenge your core muscles, boosting strength and conditioning, balance and flexibility.

“Stamina is a good baseline for stability,” says Nickie, who adds that we should take our own fitness as seriously as we do our horses’. “As we tire, our ability to maintain good

posture and balance decreases and our mental and physical reactions become much slower. You can build stamina in many ways, through activities such as jogging and cycling or simply by increasing your daily step count and speed.

“Being in the right place mentally is another key element,” adds Nickie. “If you’re nervous or stressed, your muscles will be tense. With tension comes loss of balance and stability, along with a decreased ability to respond to situations timely and effectively.

“Riding in a saddle that’s the correct shape, size and fit for you and your horse is the final and perhaps most important piece of the stability puzzle. A saddle that promotes balance and symmetry, allowing clear and consistent communication, is a big factor in achieving a stable position and the ultimate goal of a harmonious horserider partnership.”

PUT YOUR STABILITY TO THE TEST

Adding an element of instability when you exercise off the horse will help to switch on your stabilising muscles by sharpening your neurological pathways, to ensure they’ll react when and how you need them to in the saddle. Balance pads, stability balls (sometimes called Swiss or gym balls), rollers and Bosu balls (an inflatable balance trainer that’s domed on one side and flat on the other) are all great tools to use.

Taking away a sense, such as sight, will elevate the challenge. Choose a safe, spacious area to work in and try these for starters:

1Stand on one leg with your eyes shut and feel how the response from different parts of your body comes to the forefront. Move your limbs around, twisting your upper body left and right to really ramp up stabilisation.

2Perform a forearm plank with your forearms raised on a stability ball, feet hip width apart and eyes shut, feeling how your body works and responds to stabilise you.

3March on the spot like a soldier, arms swinging and knees high, for 15-20 seconds. Then shut your eyes and continue for a further 15-20 seconds, breathing deeply and maintaining a relaxed rhythm, and see what happens.

In line with the British Dressage Articles of Association, we can confirm that the BD Youth Director position is due for election this year.

This is a member elected position and the current interim post-holder is eligible to be nominated for election for an initial four-year term.

This notice is being posted as required under articles 18.8 and 18.9, to invite those wishing to stand for election to formally submit their nominations. Nomination forms are available on the British Dressage website (www.britishdressage.co.uk), or on request from the BD office, and the closing date for all applications is midday on Friday 3 May 2024.

All applicants will then be reviewed by the Nominations Committee, in accordance with Article 23.3, with a shortlist invited to interview. The successful candidate(s) will then be put forward for election by members in the summer. An electronic ballot will be held over six weeks, from mid-July to early September 2024, with all BD members able to cast their votes online.

The result will be formally announced at the 2024 British Dressage Annual General Meeting (date and venue to be confirmed). Please note that the membership vote is binding and

not subject to formal ratification at the AGM. However, the positions will continue to take effect from the date of the AGM.

JUDGE TRAINING

For 2024 Annual CPD for judges, from 1 April 2024 onwards, judges must attend a FULL formal training day from the options below only. Judges are required to attend training at a relevant level and have until 1 April 2025 to fulfil this full-day training requirement.

first lesson I had with him was on a horse I had just started competing at Grand Prix. He watched me warm up, then asked me if I was working at Prelim level. It was the beginning of a great friendship!

BEST MOMENT IN DRESSAGE

SO FAR… When Becky and Bomb (Jagerbomb) did so well at The London Horse Show I think. They both looked so happy – it makes all the hard work and difficult times seem worth going through for moments like that.

You have to believe in what you’re doing when you do it – it’s better to do the wrong thing with confidence than always try to do the right thing without conviction. That advice was from David Hunt, but I also sing in a choir, and our brilliant musical director has said nearly exactly the same words…

MY FAVOURITE SONG OR PIECE OF MUSIC…

Hannah Moody dedicates her professional life to developing talent from grass roots through to elite level. Alongside her sister, Becky Moody, she has established one of the northern dressage powerhouses, based at their parents’ farm in the Pennines. Hannah holds her BDCC Level 3, is a British Dressage Coach Educator, BDCC Assessor and was appointed as Interim BD Youth Director in October 2023. She lives with her husband Robin and daughter Eva.

MY EARLIEST MEMORY OF HORSES… Riding in Brazil in a forest in the heat. I can remember thinking how weird it was that you were being carried by this giant animal, and the sensation of being moved by its power.

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN GROWING UP? I didn’t really know. I thought I might like to be a vet, but then went to university and did fine art, and I taught at Pony Club from being about 16. I’ve always loved helping people, and I think eventually that won out.

THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON MY CAREER… David Hunt. He epitomises a brilliant coach. Technical excellence, honesty, challenging, caring, inspiring. He has an excellent sense of humour. The

A SPECIAL HORSE… My princess

Caluna. She was a dream horse for me – gorgeous inside and out, not ever going to change the world, super desire to work and just so lovely to train and be with. We were placed in the Grand Prix at the Nationals, but I retired her from high level competition soon after that as she was injured. She went on to help various young riders understand more about the advanced work, and competed with some of them at Advanced Medium level.

MY DREAM DINNER PARTY

GUESTS… Emmeline Pankhurst, David Attenborough, Geralt of Rivia, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the Obamas… I think it would make for an interesting gathering, and if the conversation ran dry we could just sit and look at Geralt.

THE PLACE I FEEL

HAPPIEST… I feel happy in lots of places – at home, at the yard, riding, coaching... I do love my garden. It’s a bit unruly at times, but it is totally my creation, and I love how it changes during the year, and how we can spend quality time sitting in it (when the weather is a little more pleasant than it has been recently).

At the moment it would be Kacey Musgraves, ‘Follow Your Arrow’. The lyrics resonate with me, and I love her voice and musicality.

MY GUILTY PLEASURE… Fantasy fiction on Audible, keeps me awake on long journeys driving to clinics, competitions and BD meetings…!

PETS IN MY LIFE… I was always a dog person, till I met my husband, who is a cat person (because they are less needy). I love our cats – they are such characters, and it is rather nice just being able to sit down and give them a snuggle when you come in at the end of a long cold wet windy winter’s day.

HOW DO YOU LIKE TO RELAX? Time catching up with old friends from school and university, holidays with family, gardening, and singing in the choir.
