EDITORS LETTER Team SPIRIT Many people don’t acknowledge the importance of a team, to their own detriment. I’ve had the pleasure these past four months of working with some of the most determined, self motivated, personable and truly lovely people that I’ve ever met and if ever there was a time to believe in the power of the collective, then it would be now. I’m very thankful, to you the reader, for hopefully sharing this publication with your friends and family, but more importantly for enjoying what we work so hard together to produce each month, only dreaming that people will find it interesting, entertaining and engaging. It’s definitely time for me to dedicate this letter specifically to those who contribute to, and show support for the publication, because no amount of hard work is ever enough without an incredible team of loyal and like minded people. It’s with a great sense of happiness that I get to see those who are a part of this journey surprising themselves at how far they’ve come, or what they’re capable of, or simply discovering the fact that they actually love something that before now they’d never have considered partaking in. As children we all dream and I think it’s fair to say that the majority of us dream big. As teenagers we often lose sight of those dreams, we lose sight of our uniqueness, our individuality and our self importance in a quest to be socially accepted. If there’s anything I’d like people to take away from British MODE and all that we are, whether you’re a reader or a contributor, it’s that feeling of youthfulness, of empowerment, in particular, in the sense that you are able to express yourself, using that natural ‘God given’ instinct that should govern your choices and in turn reward you with success. When all is said and done, fashion, style and beauty are all wonderfully creative, limitless vehicles to use in order to express yourself and I hope that all of you feel free enough and confident enough to be able to do so. On that note, happy Christmas, be safe and we’ll be back bigger and better than ever in 2014.

Jigsaw’s AW13 collection draws inspiration from the seasonal beauty of nature, totally awakening the senses. Their undeniably classy womenswear collection is comprised of earthy tones such as burnt orange and wine-red, which is contrasted beautifully against sugar coated pinks and pearlescent creams. For men, hues remain strong in a selection of smoke-grey, forest green and chocolate. Vintage vibes set the tone for the season as old-school silhouettes are re-imagined and updated with modern twists. This season, the power of a rich colour palette runs parallel with Jigsaw’s innovative use of textures, creating a visual and physical playground for the senses. Both the men’s and women’s collections evoke images of brisk walks through the British countryside on a crisp autumnal day. Deep, forest green hues paint the collection, whilst patterns mimicking tree bark and smudged fallen leaves ‘decorate’ it. Moody winter shades of smoke, ivy and heather are contrasted against a sweep of fall shades of plum, citrus lime and simmering red. The menswear collection is comparatively toned down as the designers have opted for darker hues of burgundies, browns and blacks, with the occasional injection of bold red tartan.

ly, creating quintessential Scottish garments and visions of adventures in the cold winter highlands. Chunky knitted jumpers featuring big roll necks protect from the scathing winds, soft wool garments hug the skin, shielding from the elements, whilst aran knits possess a definite heritage feel, without looking outdated. Hitchcock’s heroine is an important character in the collection. Herringbone jackets featuring vintage cuts capture the true spirit of Jigsaw, whilst waxed jackets and luxe leather add an element of practicality to the wardrobe. A knitted cobalt blue sweater and skirt combination creates a bold feminine duo, whilst a grey flannel suit is quintessential boy-meets-girl androgyny. The addition of ‘boyish’ garments is not only on trend, but it has the power to instantly update and add interest to any outfit. The earthy tones and androgynous silhouettes flirt with one another in contrast with the delicate overtones of glamour.

Jigsaw references the past with a nostalgic nod to the forties, evident through the use of beautiful beading and glistening tweeds. Sophisticated yet feminine silhouettes are draped in organza and jacquard creating an illusion of opulence. This season’s most coveted coat in a radiant icy pink, is so reminiscent of winter-blushed cheeks, cleverBoth the women’s and men’s collections ly blending the natural with the sensual. are heavily centred around traditional British knitwear. through the look of the classic British gentleman. Manliness is personified through the use of strong textures, practical knits and dense wool garments. Heritage fabrics are vital to the image: tweed blazers and thick woollen coats are the backbone to the collection. Think old-school English gent with an updated modern edge. Accented touches from tartan scarves add a sense of sophistication and care without looking over-done. Jigsaw are effectively redefining masculinity, returning men to their glory 18

days with the ability to make any fashion conscious male look devilishly handsome. Old and new are entwined seamlessly by harnessing the best vintage styles and combining them with contemporary tailoring techniques. Through textures, hues and structures, Jigsaw’s AW13 collection has captured the quintessential snapshot of Great Britain, from the misty skies to the warm shades of the rolling hills. This season, fall in love with heritage tweed and great British knits – a true testament to this island’s glorious natural landscape and design ingenuity.

Accessories

Columnist and global image consultant Kelly Millar shares some of her current favourite brands and style tips. Frey Wille Launched in the 80’s in Austria the brand creates precious fire enamel jewellery. Themes range from Greco-Roman art to the more contemporary. I absolutely love the bracelets and rings in varying widths which you can layer and combine. They’re made with 24k yellow gold powder or 18kt white gold powder and make an eye-catchingly bold statement - ideal for evenings out.

Alex Monroe This English designer established his brand over 20 years ago using nature as a metaphor to insinuate themes of nostalgia and ‘old’ England. I’m a big fan of his ‘love’ ring which you can stack with other unique pieces. His feather collection is glorious as well as his renowned Bumblebee Necklace - they are delicate, distinctive pieces.

Kara Ross New York designer Kara Ross is known for her bold and unique use of exotic skins and gemstones. Her designs are original, feminine, intrepid and imbued with sophistication. I adore her key pieces such as the Pave Baby Shirt Cuff in gold with rubies. I wear them frequently both casually with jeans and with something more glamorous for an evening out.

Lara Bohinc I have been a long time fan of Lara Bohinc’s designs and I am particularly besotted with her recent Apollo and Planetaria collections which are available in silver, rose gold and gold. They are eye catching, make a bold yet beautiful statement and are the perfect compliment to any day wear or evening ensemble. Her accessories are extremely versatile; I love her Apollo clutch in snakeskin as well as her other beautifully made handbags. 33

Jean Michel Cazabat’s

Killer Heels

Article by Kirsti Reid

Jean Michel Cazabat began his career in 1980 as a buyer and designer for Charles Jourdan. After working for the prestigious Jourdan for five years, Cazabat moved to New York to serve as president of the exquisite brand, Stephane Kelian. By 1999 he decided to establish himself as a designer under his own name, and using his experience with Jourdan and Kelian, launched a luxury women’s shoe collection of his own. It did not take long for world of fashion to catch

on to his vision and to this day he remains one of the world’s most highly respected designers. By 2003 he had launched his men’s line, endorsed by celebrities such as Elton John, Steven Tyler and Seal. Both Cazabat’s men’s and women’s collections are available internationally and also in Harvey Nichols. Growing up in the French countryside of Gascony, Cazabat was influenced by fashion from a very young age. Inspired by the stylish women of the 1960’s, the era in which he grew up, they wore cord and wood platform sandals which epitomised the chic and stylish woman of the time. Taking this design aesthetic Cazabat drew on various elements for inspiration. The designer’s collections

New Style Columnist Suzanne Bernie The end of the year may not be the most obvious time to start something new but as a brand new year is just around the corner it actually seems like a very good time! For me this December edition of British Mode is a perfect time to introduce myself and say what a pleasure and delight it is to be working with British MODE as a new style columnist and say hello to you, the readers. I’m very excited to get to know you, giving you style advise, telling you about the seasons ‘must haves’ and just where to find them, answering your fashion dilemma’s as well as sharing my insights as a busy stylist. So hello, I’m Suzanne Bernie and I’ve been working as a stylist for many years. 52

Thoroughly enjoying all the incredible variations in which a stylist can work. Never knowing where and what the next job will be. For me this way of working is ideal and feeds my creativity and keeps me free spirited. I’m a Northern gal at heart but after coming to London in order to be near my now husband, not only did I stay in love with him but I also fell madly in love with this magnificent city. It is an inspirational vibrant and creative whirl of craziness, and a strong contender as the best city in the world with opportunities beyond belief, I truly believe nothing is impossible. My career in fashion started in retail and then moved into wholesale selling to major retail-

When buying from Paris and running a busy showroom I learnt about the job of a stylist and I realised this was my dream career. There was no option but to make it happen and happen it did! After two years assisting and learning absolutely everything a stylist should know, I was ready to go it alone. Styling shoots for Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan and Elizabeth Hurley for Vogue. Styling for TV for brands such as BMW and E! Entertainment and music videos and album covers for such greats as Sir Paul McCartney. At the same time my opinion was forever being called upon, what did I think of certain styles and did it suit this person, from there Coathanger was created. Requests for my style opinion came flooding in, making me realise that there were so many people out there who needed a little honest and friendly advice with their image. I have wonderful clients from all over the world with extraordinary lives and from all walks

of life and of all ages, my youngest being 10 and the oldest 80 - with budgets of all sizes. Over two years ago Westfield London approached me to work with them in Personal Styling and six years ago Coathanger started Bespoke Uniforms dressing staff for hotels, hospitality and front of house teams, giving an edge to corporate dressing. These wonderful experiences have allowed me to give presentations and lectures at various colleges and universities such as Istituto Marengoni, helping young and up and coming stylists to really learn just what the job entails. To me as a stylist I believe how we feel on the inside is most always shown by how you look on the outside. What mood you wake up in dictates what you choose from your wardrobe. For me fashion and the psychology behind it fascinates me, and getting to know about my clients lifestyle enables me to discover their true personalities through the outfits they wear. I look forward to getting to know you all and letting you into my world of STYLE !! 53

London based designer Kelly Love began her career in Osaka Japan working with a Japanese artist and designer before returning to her native country, Australia, to complete her studies at Raffles Institute of Design. Whilst at Raffles Love developed a signature design aesthetic, creating beautiful garments with classic silhouettes featuring exclusive prints. Kelly Love’s AW13 collection ‘Flowers and Grandeur’ combines impeccable tailoring and luxe fabrics to create truly exceptional pieces.

At three-quarter length and a relaxed style, it is suitable for most body types although particularly flattering on those with a slender frame who want to accentuate long, lean legs.

Another particularly beautiful piece in the collection is the Dusk In The City Blazer. Created in a soft fawn wool mix with a detachInspired by the Parisian lifestyle of bygone able faux fur collar, this blazer is versatile,

times, Love focuses on the stories an old door in Paris would tell if it could, of the woman who lived there, of her lover and the times they spent together. She creates a heavy mood of nostalgia with a hint of tragedy by enveloping the persona of the woman who lived behind the door in lush yet contrasting fabrics, such as mohair and silk, Italian lace and velvet. Duck egg blue, deep teal, magenta and blush form the base of the colour palette, which is set against a background of dark hues and neutral tones.

Other features of the collection include floral bloom prints on button down, collared shirt dresses and tapered trousers and ankle skimming, sleeveless day dresses in block colours. 56

Zoe Jordan Best emerging British luxury brand finalist of 2012, Zoe Jordan, toys with the contrasts of masculinity and femininity and structure and fluidity, in her self named London label. Many would note that the charm of her work lies within the simplicity of the garments and the designer’s innate ability to capture the essence of the ‘London look’. Exquisite tailoring, contemporary silhouettes and heritage fabrics are all key features of Jordan’s distinctive style and label. The autumnal/winter line is inspired by London life, combining all of these elements into a sophisticated, cohesive collection that defies the boundaries of day and night, to produce a selection of interchangeable garments for the ‘Jordan’ woman. An interesting mixture of jersey and leather is blended to create a sleek, shiny pair of trousers which embodies the luxe style of the collection whilst being practical and comfortable - something that remains at the heart of Jordan’s design aesthetic. The high waistline and zip and button fastening keeps the look fresh and updated. The Mason Tailored coat in charcoal tweed is an unmistakable staple in the collection and is made from herringbone tweed and features inverted lapels and

a stylishly contrasting collar. Long-line and tailored in a rather masculine way, the androgyny of the garment encapsulates eccentric, eclectic London style, and in 100% wool it is the perfect coat for the season. Aside from herringbone tweed, another heritage fabric used in the collection is the knitted Glencheck, cut into a pullover, monochrome in colour featuring leather accents around the neckline and cuffs. Elbow patches and a box silhouette complete the style of the garment. Aside from monochromatic knits and dark charcoal wools, the collection also sees a blanket of creams and neutrals behind splashes of bright orange, gold and blue metallics. Other favourites include panelled strapless bodices, floor skimming maxi skirts and dresses, cut out details and glamorous hints of fur, or faux fur. Diversity is ultimately attractive and Jordan clearly demonstrates the ability to marry metallics with fur and colours that traditionally would not sit beside each other which herein work together and harmonise to produce a striking collection that is both design led and utterly practical. 57

and zip through front. A hint of a raglan sleeve for a fitted look and an elasticated waist is used to draw the garment in, giving a luxe sport feel, perfect for wearing casually with jeans and flats or for dressing up with an equally show stopping dress. This particular jacket has become popular amongst many in the fashion industry and has also been seen on the red carpet – the label is also popular with Irish celebrity Sharon Corr and Mary J Blige.

The AW13 collection entitled ‘I Belong To Me’ was inspired by the idea of writing a love letter to oneself. The winter line is in every sense an expression and a celebration of beauty and strength, reflected throughout. Initially the design inspiration came from the imagery of cascading china plates shattering on the ground after being thrown as a way to release stress. The prints draw upon this feeling of release and traditional Chinese symbolism such as the bull exploding into various colours. Digital print on silk is the focus, combined with jacquard weaves, embroidered lace and specially commissioned Italian zips. The leather used is primarily lambskin as it’s super soft and pliable and feels beautiful on the skin. The colour palette, a mix of gold metallics and bright primary red and blue set against dark tones of slate and charcoal grey, forms a complimentary contrast.

A floor skimming dress in black silk with lovely dolmain sleeves, a plunging neckline and fitted waist, features within the collection. The dress sensually caresses the female form in the most flattering of ways and has the same bull print which runs throughout the collection, this time in a true gold tone.

Other highlights from the collection include: skin tight trousers with a patent leather finish, jackets featuring china bull print and classically cut pencil skirts. The collection is evocative of feminine strength and power without being overtly extrovert and maintaining air of wear-ability. As for next season the designer remarked in a former interview “I am very excited about S/ S14, a little hint is I am going back to my “All The Jewellery I Never Got’ hand drawn jewellery water coloured prints creating a new play on stripes mixed with solid colours. Jena Theo Jena Theo’s winter collection is in many senses a revival of colour, with vibrant pops of orange, pink, and green sitting alongside flashes of metallic gold and quirky dripping prints of stylised smiling faces. The brand was established in February 2009 and draws its name from both founders, Jenny Holmes and Dimitris Theocharidis, the duo who won the Fashion Fringe Award the very same year. Holmes focuses on volume and unique pattern cutting 60

whilst Theocharidis works on silhouette and tailoring, together producing a collection of exceptional brilliance. The concept behind the brand’s AW13 collection is based upon the Thompson book ‘Hell’s Angels’. As with Kelly Love’s collection, Jena Theo also uses florals in a wintry way, adding an air of darkness, macabre and mystery to the print whilst the bright colours and simple silhouette keeps it beautiful and light hearted. Yogi Fat Barrel Wand £64.95

Agadir Argan Oil Treatment £17.00

I’m always recommending Argan Oil to my clients. This wonder oil is ightweight and non-greasy. Argan oil has a low molecular weight, which instantly penetrates into the hair shaft without weighing the hair down, leaving hair soft and silky with a luxurious shine.

It’s a unique design with a mahogany barrel to absorb heat, cork handle and reinforced boar hair, with the boar bulb intact, spreading sebum along each hair shaft for ultimate shine and manageability!

f you ever held the misconception that tartan was staid and reminiscent of Miss Jean Brodie, characterised by the writer, Muriel Spark, then think again. This season tartan and Scottish heritage fabrics have inspired a range of designers to immerse themselves and their individual design genius in a canvass and palette of extraordinary depth, revealing a sensational duality of up-to-the-minute design and classic style allure.

tartan revolution. Back in the 1980’s, Jeff Banks created ‘that’ tartan suit as worn by androgynous pop icon, Annie Lennox; a combination of tradition and fabulous conception pushed tartan out there as a canvass of both fresh and classic character. Here again, Moschino has cleverly nodded to that era in Pop Music, whilst adding unmistakeable femininity and elegance to the tartan tailored suit, perfect for today’s confident, assured woman.

Moschino’s Rosella Jardini shows great creative inspiration through her imaginative and sharply stylish use of tartan with the Moschino Tartan Fever collection. Upon the waiting world of fashion she unleashed gorgeously tailored jackets, suits, skirts and dresses ready to power their way into the fashion lexicon; she has her way with palette, texture and cut sufficient to unleash a

The tartan fever collection is fresh, free spirited and representative of Scottish heritage, yet very wearable. A key piece is the tartan blazer, inspired by the “ Stewart “ tartan featuring a lapel collar and fluted waist. Almost equestrian in feel, the blazer could be worn for dramatic impact with the matching tartan trousers, or for funky Hogmanay chic, worn with black skinny jeans and black biker boots. Alter-

natively it could be paired with the black mini kilt, black tights and brogues. To achieve that party look add stud detail brogues for quirky impact. Luxury Outerwear

For Men Article by Dean Smith

Christmas is again on the horizon which can only mean one thing… facing the seemingly near impossible task of purchasing gifts for those of the population who were born on Mars, men of course! Help is at hand, clearly, so many questions arise throughout the decision-making process, do you opt for the novelty mug route or the Red Nose Reindeer sweater worn once and stored in the loft and forgotten? Then there is the issue of deciding appropriate expenditure on what are often frivolous products at this time of year and particularly in these difficult economic times.

is simple, most men purchase clothing on the basis of its inherent good looks and even durability, providing them with a sense of style, value and quality which reflects something of themselves and their values. With a luxury brand that is exactly what is on offer. The ideal gift for the man in your life is easier to pick out than you think. Subtle is classic and the biggest impact is often expressed through selecting one block colour or choose Fair Isle knits for added cache. That perfect cashmere sweater or cardigan is light, warm, stylish and devilishly classic. Consider angora, silk and jersey knits or premium merino hand knitted woollens for a true luxury product, don’t settle for anything less! Quality is the most important factor when it comes to outerwear, with the recipient often desiring warm, soft and durable fabrics.

Whether gifts are aimed at partners, brothers or fathers, there is nothing with more longevity and class than a luxurious piece of outerwear. An excellent quality garment, though potentially costly, will be exceptionally well received and could become that loved item, treasured for years to come. For the savvy seasonal shopper there are a plethora of options and great designs; A fine, well crafted piece of outer wear will why not take a look at Pierre Balmain, Paul pay dividends when braving those brisk UK Smith, Polo Ralph Lauren, Norse Projects, mornings with the de-icer or taking a leisurely Marc Jacobs and Alexander McQueen, stroll to and from the work’s Christmas par- to name but a few. Happy Christmas

I’m Judi Dench and I am honoured to be a Vice President of Vitalise. I am writing to you on the eve of the Festive Season to ask for your help.

There are millions of people in the UK struggling to cope with disability. They might be disabled themselves and confined to a wheelchair, or caring for a loved one with a disability. Sadly, half of all people with disabilities live below the poverty line. A third of all households with an adult with disabilities cannot afford even one week’s break a year. Almost three quarters of family carers have reached breaking point due to the unrelenting pressure of their caring role, yet a third of carers have never had a break since they started caring. This is why Vitalise’s centres remain open for Christmas. Our guests can leave their worries behind them and draw strength from the warmth and companionship of a Vitalise break during this magical time of year, enabling them to start the New Year with renewed hope and vigour. One of our previous Christmas guests, Anthea Brookes of Altrincham, told us:

“I like the friendly atmosphere generated by the staff and volunteers at Vitalise and I love meeting and enjoying Christmas with new people. What’s also great is that Mum gets a rest too. At home I only have my parents, so it means they get to relax and enjoy the festive season too without having to worry about my care and wellbeing. Because of Vitalise we all get the break we deserve.”

We are determined that nobody should miss out on the opportunity to take a Vitalise break for financial reasons. So in order to make our essential breaks as affordable as possible to all, each and every break is subsidised by an amount of £340, raised from generous individual donations and through our own fundraising efforts. It is only through the generosity of individual supporters such as yourself, who recognise the value of our work, that any of this is possible. That’s why we urgently need your help this Festive Season. So please, give what you can – and help us rekindle the spirit of Christmas. To donate please visit www.just-giving.com/Vitalise-Christmas or call us on 0303 303 0145.

Belle Epoque Article by Rebecca Martin

A red carpet spectacular bid a fond ‘bon anniversaire’ to The Belle Époque on Thursday 21st Nov, celebrating the establishment’s 40th anniversary in stunning style. Knutsford Town Mayor Barbara Coan was joined by a host of VIP’s, including Chris Geere, the British actor who recently starred alongside actor Will Smith in Hollywood blockbuster After Earth. Tracey and Char102

lotte Dawson, wife and daughter of comedy legend Les Dawson, and soap actress Roxanne Pallett were also in attendance to join in celebrations and toast to the last 40 years. A red carpet entrance was followed by an elegant champagne and canapé reception, hosted around a roaring fire in the luxurious bar area. actor Chris Geere nasty Matthew Mooney, guests were whisked upstairs to dine in the most atmospheric of surroundings. Desert was presented in the form of a delightfully rich chocolate creation, topped with edible gold and a single glimmering birthday candle. As the candles were blown out in unison, and glasses raised to the Belle Époque, a rapturous chorus of ‘Happy Birthday’ rang out around the historic walls. With charity, Facing the World, having been chosen as partner and benefactor for the event, Executive Director Graham Banton and Patron Sharon Royle delivered a rousing speech about the work of the charity and the importance of raising awareness for the incredible work that they do, leaving no doubt in the mind that Fac-

ing the World was a most deserving cause. As guests relaxed after the meal, entertainment was provided by close hand magician Carl Royle, a name famous for bringing his dazzling tricks to celebrities and venues across the world. Once guests had been suitably amazed by Carl’s talents, the party moved back downstairs to the fireside, where smartly dressed bartenders expertly mixed Hunters Gin into the official cocktail of the night, aptly named ‘The 1973’. They say life begins at 40, but for The Belle Époque, this landmark anniversary simply serves as a comma of sorts, punctuating the space between a breathtaking history and an exciting future. 103

bel & the DRAGON Hotel Review

Journalist Madeleine Spencer reviews her stay at Bel & The Dragon, Churt. You might expect to both dine and sleep better under the one roof in an country inn in Surrey than you have done in London for months, but a little visit to The Bel & Dragon in Churt will disabuse you of this erroneous belief - my night’s stay there could not have been bettered. On arriving on a cold and wintry night, I was warmed to the core by both the greeting and the heat emanating from the fireplaces. This auspicious start was fitting - after some investigating, it seems the newly-opened Bel & The Dragon is determined to continue the theme 106

After a quick tipple (it would have been rude not to), I had a look around my bedroom (entitled Dashwood). She was a beauty - designer Nicola Harding has created rooms that are both homely and luxurious, stylish and functional. It was almost impossible not to cast off ideas of dining and nestle into the White Company sheets for the evening with a glass of the damson vodka and one of the copious volumes of books dotted around the room

but, alas, plans were in place and a bath in the white, wooden bathroom commenced. During the process of getting ready the Bel & The Dragon once again triumphed - the Babyliss hairdryer was far superior to those usually offered, the iron and ironing board were useable (not the tiny, crusty affairs often provided), and the aforementioned damson vodka proved the perfect aperitif. The downstairs restaurant was equally as agreeable. The open kitchen presided over by Gordon Ramsey at Claridge’s alumnus Ronnie Kimbugwe, provided mouthwatering dishes - the Pumpkin Soup & Shaved Truffle, Wild Mushroom Macaroni Cheese and Beetroot & Creamy Burrata were particularly high points. The evening could only have been improved

by a cocktail and, thankfully, cocktail maestro Sunny Rutherford was on hand to whip some Espresso Martinis up while talking through the process (Sunny - there will be many a cocktail night happening over here now - my friends thank you in advance). Once sated and, let’s be honest, a little tipsy, bed beckoned. And what a bed it was - a huge affair bedecked in buttery White Company sheets and with extra blankets (hearty applause for these) stacked at the bottom. I suspected I would sleep well and was proven right - I in fact slept so well that I missed breakfast. Determined, however, not to miss a Bel & The Dragon meal, I skipped my lunch plans in London and instead sat down for a good meal in the cosy dining room. It was the best move I made all week - Bel & The Dragon, you’ve won a diehard fan. 107

Get Under your Skin with Environ Article by Sophie Milner Described as ‘boot camp for your skin’ by the therapist at Skin3 salon, Environ’s Active Vitamin facial treatment uses new technology to penetrate the skin and change the way it works. Developed by South African Plastic Surgeon Dr Des Fernandes, the Environ skincare range has met much acclaim and endorsements from celebrities such as Hilary Swank and Sadie Frost, and is labelled by many as a must have treatment. It’s success lies in its three-pronged approach that trains your skin to behave better from the inside-out, rather than outside-in. Feed, fortify and finish is Environ’s mantra. This innovative trio consists of following an easy step-by-step Environ skin care range, an Advanced Nutrition Programme which includes nourishing vitamin supplements, and the use of mineral makeup (by Jane Irendale), to reach a facial nirvana and gain fresh, dewy and youthful looking skin. Environ’s Active Vitamin Facial treatment uses the latest technological discoveries to penetrate all layers of the skin, to rival results which previously were only achievable with invasive procedures or skin-thinning techniques such as chemical peels or laser treatment. After providing information on your biggest skin woes, from breakouts to wrinkles, the skin therapist gives a 45-min118

ute consultation using powerful Visia imaging technology to capture an in-depth profile of your skin, so that the treatment can be tailored to your specific facial requirements. Through this technology, common problem areas of sun damage, hyper-pigmentation blemishes, capillary damage, dehydration, wrinkles and congested pores are analysed. The system’s camera provides a selection of images that reveal the extent of each problem and rates your skin against the average woman of your age through percentages. So high-tech this analysis is, that it fast-forwards five years to reveal

a photograph of your skin’s condition if you carry on with your current routine of facial care. Watching your face age five years instantly may be a frightening concept, but the treatment is aimed at reducing the affects of aging. It is suitable for conditioning and training even the most delicate complexions affected by sun-damage, uneven pigmentation or scarring!

without surgery or toxin injections. Instead we offer effective but gentle products and treatments which respect and harness the skin’s own powers of rejuvenation.”

So how does the treatment work so well? In a warm, relaxing, dark room, the treatments are applied. Through a powerful combination of pulsed electrical current and low frequency sound waves, and high-dosage preparations of anti-ageing and re-hydrating vitamins A and C, the skin is regenerated. Although this all sounds quite high-tech, and to a degree it is, the theory and science is entirely natural and logical. Vitamins are driven deep into the skin’s structure resulting in improved cell renewal and increased production of fresh collagen and elastin, resulting in softened lines and lessened scars. The skin also looks firmer and finer-textured. Skin3 manager Faye Layton-McCann says the salon’s focus is a combined approach to achieving beautiful, healthy skin, “Our aim is to help our clients reveal the true natural radiance of their skin without using any damaging procedures and

n e M Autsin Reed Signature Pour Homme £45, (EDT, 100ml) ‘This represents the true British gentleman of Savile Row tailoring and dinner at the Ritz. The fragrance has a floral aroma, slightly sweet but not too intense. Its staying power is subtle and would suit the young man who wants to remain classic. With top notes of Sicilian bergamot, grapefruit, tangerine, and pepper, spicy and floral heart notes and sensual undertones of vanilla, vetiver and cedarwood this would undoubtedly make a fantastic Christmas gift for the man you love.’ -Stewart Bernie

Boss Bottled £42 (EDT 100ml) ‘Boss is at first light ,fresh and fruity but later develops into a woody warmer scent. I like the fragrance a lot but it’s really quite subtle and needs to be reapplied throughout the day. It’s definitely a day time fragrance due to its fresh and clean scent. The sensation is awakening and invigorating and the bottle is very contemporary. Top notes include Apple, Bergamot and Cinnamon with middle notes of Tagete and Geranium and bass notes including Cedarwood, Sandalwood, Vetiver and Olivewood.’ - Stewart Bernie

‘This is quite a unique fragrance and when I first tried it myinitial reaction was ‘this is far to spicy and intense’ and I felt that it had a more mature scent, but all is defiantly not lost here. As the day went on the fragrance softened and sweetened a little and I noticed that there certainly is staying power to this product. As a stylist I’m always around people and clients of mine noticed me wearing this scent and commented positively. I’d say this is more of an evening product due to it’s mysterious nature, even the black bottle is telling you this is an all nighter. The top note is watermelon; middle notes are basil, verbena and lavender; base notes are dark chocolate, cashmeran, coumarin and patchouli.’ - Stewart Bernie

Mark Niemierko On Celebrities, Trends & The Academy

Keith Appleby Photography

Before setting up Niemierko you previously worked in the film & TV production industry. How would you liken staging a production to creating a couples dream wedding?

You made the business decision quite early in your career to cap the number of weddings you plan to 10 per year. Has this contributed to your creativity and maintenance of your reputation for exclusivity?

You planned the weddings of Rochelle from The Saturdays and Marvin from JLS. What was it like working with them and do celebrity clients differ from those who aren’t in the eye of the media?

I think of planning a wedding in stages, acts if you like. Similar to a production, also the fact that on a film or TV drama nothing can go wrong on the day of the shoot. It’s all in the planning – and that’s the same for a wedding. All the hard work goes into the planning, so that come the wedding day it’s the easiest process with all in place.

Wedding planning can’t be done on a mass level or commercially – well certainly not on a luxury, highend scale. There’s too much detail to a wedding, like no other event, so you need to focus on that couple – and that takes time. By not having 10s of clients it means I can give the right amount of attention and properly learn who my client is.

I think I am lucky enough to appeal to couples from Pop stars right through to CEO’s of corporate, creative and fashion brands as well as English Society to varying international couples. Meaning my job is never dull – all my couples are stars and have amazing stories, histories and cultures. It’s my job to understand them and put their tastes and personalities into a day that instantly re127

think you’ll see brides really not be afraid of adding colour to their dresses. Bigger number weddings are back with most being 250 plus. Seeing more 500 plus weddings. Later evening receptions are also becoming more popular. In relation to styles darker, bolder colours. People aren’t afraid to move away from white.

Of course. You simply be true to yourself and not try to take from other weddings you’ve seen. If a couple comes to me and says “I want what you did at X wedding” they aren’t the right couple for me. I didn’t really look to another planner when I started – that’s the reason I started – I felt I could offer something no one in London was really focusing on. The attention to detail and personality. Certainly however I’ve always been inspired by and influenced by people around me. Luxe

Ski Wear by Rebecca Martin

Whether you’re headed to the slopes of Klosters or Courchevel for your wedding, baby its cold outside, and as temperatures plunge upon the mountain top, the pressure is on to master the ultimate combination of style and substance. Recent winters have seen a departure away from the vast array of brightly coloured, shiny, padded creations, looking instead 140

towards collections inspired by the trends gracing catwalks around the world. Leading the ski wear revolution is French company Moncler, globally recognised for having creating some of the world’s most luxurious of ski wear. Their Grenoble dedicated ski wear line is a collection which expertly combines rich shades of forest green alongside the finest faux

fur, suede and wool detailing. Glances of envy on the slopes are guaranteed by the stunning ‘Gaisberg’ jacket, it’s technologically sound yet unquestionably stylish construction effortlessly combines ultra-light, technical nylon and a wind proof gaiter with delectably soft forest green suede and a luxurious feather down inner. Moncler haven’t forgotten about the guys, pre-

senting a Grenoble men’s skiwear collection which is equally as impressive. The asymmetric zip, funnel neck and soft dove grey tone of the ‘Trivor’ padded jacket make it the pinnacle of style for time spent on the slopes. Befitting of the brand’s dedication to combining style and substance, the jacket is constructed from lightweight, high-performance technological nylon, with a wind proof gaiter, feather down inner and elasticated cuffs. Team the Trivor jacket with the innovative design and technical construction of the thermal Moncler Technical Padding Ski Trouser and you’re ski ready, with a look befitting of royalty, alongside whom you may saunter on the slopes. For those seeking to embody the essence of Bond style chic, the monochrome palette is certainly the way to go. French fashion house Lacroix has built an indelible status on the slopes, using a B&W colour palette throughout their collections. The men’s ‘Whistler’ jacket and trouser combination features a combination of monochrome palette, graphic lines and a structured, refined style truly befitting of Mr. Bond himself. Paired

together with the full grain leather and Lacroix emblem embossed ‘Classic’ men’s gloves, the result is sartorial perfection! For serious Bond girl style, it simply has to be the Lacroix ‘Lake Louise’ all in one ski-suit. Retaining the same monochrome design, combined with figure enhancing belt detail and high neckline, creating a dazzling look in which to grace the slopes. Embodying a sense of vintage winter glamour, reminiscent of Old Hollywood sirens upon the slopes, the simple design is understated yet impactful. When the sun sets on the slopes, it is all about the après ski, and that can mean only one thing, cashmere. The softest of layers are a winter necessity and nowhere more so than on the snowy slopes of Switzerland. Saint Laurent’s Cashmere roll neck sweaters are just thick enough to be perfect for layering up during the day, and stylish enough to command attention as you sip spiced mulled wine at the fireside. Knitted in Scotland and featuring lambs leather suede elbow patches, the traditional style with luxurious touches will accompany denim or leather perfectly as you

relax after a day spent skiing or snowboarding. Designer Brunello Cucinelli’s range of men’s cashmere knits will keep the gentlemen cosy whilst on the mountain tops. The cable knit sweater, made in Italy from rich Oxblood coloured pure cashmere, is tipped at collar and cuff with a soft grey trim, lending a semi-formal and timeless feel to a stylish piece. For a more casual look with the same luxe accents, the chunkier cable knit cardigan leads the way. Crafted in the Italian village of Solomeo, the classically styled funnel neck cardigan is finished with natural wooden buttons, perfectly juxtaposed against the super soft cashmere. Exquisite quality jackets, structured ski trousers and elegant ski-suits offer the same comfort, warmth and protection, but with an added injection of sartorial excellence. Helena I love black tulle which is why I chose to use it over a changant taffeta skirt (Opal) this skirt is based on a waist reducing waspie that allows for an extremely full skirt without any bulk on the waistline. It exaggerates the waistline as well as reducing it waistline! I would say this garment is the most versatile in the collection because the design compliments a multitude of different tops, which is what I wanted. It also means the garment can be worn confidently to many occasions. 146

Made from a luxurious wool called ‘The Glorious twelfth’ this corset-based dress has a tea length skirt (mid calf length) and a definite 1940’s feel. For the top half I opted for puff style sleeves (without looking girly) and the front bust line hosts several lapels giving the dress a structured, suited, masculine appearance which forms a beautiful contrast against the ultra feminine elements. 149
