LONDON FASHION WEEK

H

aving made it through half of 2020 - it's been a year of hurdles left and right. But as the last months have proved, Human resilience and adaptability are aweworthy. Our world is slowly opening up again, and this time with the most innovative ways to

do so. Industries are now revamping the standard once set, setting the bar high for new ways of expression and creativity. And one of these bustling transmogrifications is "The Reset ." It's the first of its kind - a digital fashion week, and it all started in London, a brainchild of the British Fashion Council and the collective of artisans who pledged to keep the industry going, no matter the circumstances. Under the banner, "Make a Material Difference support creative talent, be part of the industry." With London being a hub for free-flowing creativity, this new platform didn't have any shortage when it comes to talent. Designer brands such as Anya Hindmarch, Chris Owens, Matt Miller, and countless others provided an equal mix of known and nouveau to the fold - and it's safe to say that this hub is all about giving an eclectic touch to the world. The British Fashion Council recruited talents such as James Massiah to provide different ranges of art shown on mediums such as films, podcasts, and poems for the curious viewer. The three day event from June 12-14 2020 pushed for inclusivity on all fronts as the once "exclusive" events of Fashion Week became accessible to all for the first time in 40 years. The LFW's digital platform served as the stage for designers and artists to showcase their work, and as they say - fashion and art continuously overlap. This new platform made sense as we virtualize the world, and the social premises of parties do not confine a successful fashion week. Now it is a memorandum that fashion is about the story and creativity of the designer's vision for their pieces, and it can still go on without its regular programming. As stated above, the BFC came forward to support the democratization of London Fashion Week, and

for once, it became free for all. A far cry from the nuances of having a certain number of guests, editors, and buyers sitting in their chairs for the hallowed runway extravaganzas of the once busy spaces hosting the bustle of shows. While, of course, this digital reset could never rival the experience of seeing the physical shows. It gave the consumer and designer a different experience altogether. Designers can bring people together and promote better dialogue between a brand and the public. In doing so, it fosters interactivity and narrows the existing gap through a slew of events, original content, created explicitly for the gender-neutral digital FW. On the consumer side, one of the reset's features is to allow viewers to shop the collection's look enabling people to buy at their leisure. While this Fashion Week chose to break away from the mold with highs, it also has its lows. The scheduled lineup disappointed those who expected to see London's most iconic brands, notably absent were Burberry, Victoria Beckham, Craig Green, Vivienne Westwood. With many factories in garmentproducing countries still closed and supply chain shutdowns. Now, Designers were forced to step back and wait for a change in the calendar. Ahead of the race, designers Marques Almeida, Daniel Fletcher, Priya Ahluwalia, and Preen by Thornton Bregazzi, caught our attention. Fashion creates emotions everyone can understand, no matter the context, it will accomplish its mission, and continue to express and translate artistic visions, art thoughts, ideas, and innovations, creating business opportunities for millions of people worldwide. Fashion week bring different people together, and celebrate their uniqueness, the industry has had its share of significant crisis through the centuries, and has always pushed boundaries, and re-invented itself. Fashion will rebound, despite the world's scenario and climate, but for now, the show must go on.

"THE SHOW MUST GO ON."

This exhibition was a vivid celebration of diversity, cultural love, and identity affirmation. Ahluwalia featured in "Forbes 30 under 30 European Arts and Culture" last year and among her many accolades -winning the H&M Design Award and collaborating with Adidas at Paris Fashion Week simultaneously. Her work is a byproduct of fashion, art exploration, fusion, and diversity. It is a part of her creative process, which translates her vision into her style. With the global population facing a significant crisis, sustainability is more than ever, and it's an urgent matter. Portuguese duo Marques Almeida never disappoints -Marta and Paulo, launched a film to showcase their new collections, sustainability is at the core one of the brand's philosophy and its most prominent concerns. They promote a respectful work environment and embrace social responsibility when producing garments. They purchase the leftover stock of leftover from Portuguese factories, the brand often produces small collections, that convey the sustainable and positive energy. reM'Ade Marques'Almeida a sub-brand is part of that wishful thinking -transforming waste into a colorful and fun fashion. Therefore Marques'Almeida is continually searching and experimenting with sustainable and upcycled materials, that flexibility stimulates the brand's creativity, the story behind the garment, makes every single ReM'Ade piece, a special one.

DANIEL FLETCHER Amongst the fold of artisans, Daniel Fletcher was amongst the few designers that presented a collection. Fletcher was featured in the Netflix series "Next In Fashion" competition, winning second place. He showed a stunning collection, inspired by garments he created for the show, preppy, elegant, and beautifully done, we love him the sensitive approach to fashion, neat, classy, and tailoringfocused. Lockdown forced Fletcher to find new ways of work, create and articulate his vision, a feat that deserves its standing ovation. Fletcher managed to produce a new fashion opus by using fabric leftovers from previous seasons, sending them to his seamstresses and building 12 pieces of the gender-less, cheerful,see-now-buy-now collection, through phone conversations and Zoom. The collection featured long wide pants, silk and lace boxers and shirts,split-hemmed trousers,hand-painted jackets, and the Next In Fashion, iconic duffle coats. Several brands have come forward in support of the Black Lives Matter,10 % of the sales, going to BLM movement. WORDS: PATRYCI A A FZ A L

Preen combined a youthful aesthetic and a sharp romantic yet dynamic twist. The brand is known for their flair at successfully deconstructing and mixing materials. This collection has its signature written all over it, and the result is decadently polished—a happy fusion of opulent Victorian vintage and contemporary London aesthetic. The statement shapes and printed patchworks, adorned the slick and fresh silhouettes, along with a bright color palette. Preen's new perspective during these ever-changing times, is a real breath of fresh air.

THE TOP 5 STYLE ESSENTIALS YOU NEED IN YOUR WARDROBE NOW ACCESSORIES There are a lot of different styles to try out, but a musthave always is an excellent pair of sunglasses, especially in this weather. While I can't help with figuring out which frames are the best fit your face shape, what I can tell you is that they're a sine qua non to every outfit.

As a stylist, for me, essentials are everything, specifically when it comes to clothes. Some pieces just go with everything, and this often applies to both men and women. You could never go wrong with the basics because these are the foundations of any great outfit. Below are a few of my must-haves and choices this season. ARTICLE BY: N ATA LIE C A RE

A BLACK BLAZER Simple, chic, masculine, feminine, I mean all the words I could use to describe a blazer, the point is you must have one, and it should be in black. If you want to look a little sleeker and tapered, avoid doublebreasted cuts. I recommend this particular style from the brand & Other Stories. You can never go wrong with a blazer because it just goes.

Celine Sunglasses www.selfriges.com

A CLASIC WHITE SHIRT I've chosen this shirt from Cos as it has 3/4 sleeves. This makes it more feminine, having that flash of the wrist and added space for flaunting accessories. Whether you tuck into trousers, skirt, or merely hanging it out. This crisp white shirt is a musthave for your wardrobe and will always go with everything!

THEORY - Etiennette Stretch-Wool Blazer www.selfriges.com

JEANS The style, shape, and the right size are so essential to compliment your frame. Shopping for the perfect pair of jeans often takes a lot of time and effort. But of course, in a bid to make things easier for everyone. I would recommend J Brand, they develop the best fitting jeans in the world. I recommend The Maria pair because of the high rise and skinny fit that is suitable for all body shapes.

SHRUNKEN COTT SHRUNKEN www.cosstores.com

£70

TRAINERS Simple, understated, and comfortable. That's what you should look for when choosing trainers for the first time and make sure that you at least have a white pair. I am in love with the brand Axel Arigato. Their designs are modern but embrace everyday wear. Their new line added feminine details to some of their designs. Making them appealing to everyone's taste, and if you like added height, then you got it. 12 b r i t i s h T H O U G H T S . u k

REVAMP YOUR CLOSET

Save Time , Space & Money

CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING WHEN SHOPPING

1.

define your style - the way you look impacts the way you are perceived, the way you feel about yourself, the way you work, and ultimately the way you interact with the world.

2.

- identify the clothes you own, embrace the unworn pieces of your wardrobe, re-discover, restyle, and re-love what you already have, give them a second life and boost your confidence while doing it. inventory your closet

3.

rethink your purchasing decisions

- buy from eco-friendly brands with

transparent supply chains, invest in timeless pieces well-made, perfectly tailored, fill your wardrobe with garments with a substantial lifespan.

4.

replace trend-identity by personal-

- if you are continually buying, the latest trends, you buy, poor fabric and ill-fitting short-trend pieces. As a result, you might not know what your style is anymore and once the trend is over, your garment is outfashionable and dated. identity

5.

shop thoughtfully - make a conscious effort, purchase items that match your style, and fit the three rules - perfect balance, between size, shape, and proportion. Your looks will be more cohesive, flattering, and fun.

6.

simplify your wardrobe - make a selection, keep the quality and versatile pieces, identify similar items, clothes, or shoes you haven't worn in years. Don't hold on to clothes that no longer fit your shape or lifestyle. Let go of the clothes you are emotionally attached to, sell those garments, transform the clothes you bored of, or give them away to charity shops.

7.

check your mood

- Avoid shopping

when you're sad or bored; Avoid browsing through your favourite brand's sites.; Avoid sales and deals; Close store credit cards and finally, unsubscribe from fashion brands newsletters.

L

et's face it, cleaning and organizing your closet wasn't on your list. That is until we found ourselves at home with more free time than usual. Maybe after sorting your wardrobe out, you realized that you often wear the same pieces, yet you keep going on a shopping spree, and now you have an extensive collection of clothes to choose from, but you can't seem to pick what to wear. The fashion industry largely contributes to the world's growing carbon footprint- imagine, every year, an estimated 350 000 tonnes of clothes waste are buried in UK landfills. Due to its colossal amount of water and over-producing unsustainable patterns. It is a known fact that these unfriendly environmental practices contribute to the growing issues of today. Now the question here for all - is it possible to be a fashion consumer without causing irreversible damage to the planet? Unsurprisingly, most of the clothes we buy often lose its appeal once they are hanging in our wardrobe, and the joy of owning that much-wanted garment fades away. It also makes you, the consumer, take a look at yourself in the mirror and face the fact that you, my dear, maybe a shopaholic. And finally, if that's how you feel, this is the time to take control and to Revamp thy closet.

8. 9.

don' t rely on shopping - as a source of joy, find happiness, by hanging out with your friends, taking dance lessons, working out, or whatever feeds your soul.

- be mindful about your money. Track your budget, focus your budget on fewer but quality things, start a budget-conscious list on what you can purchase, don't buy what you can't afford, or you will soon be very fashionable but broke. start a financial plan

10. 11.

categories

-

Essential or Not Important. You will quickly identify mindless shopping habits and cut them out. Also, another helpful tip -delete shopping apps from your phone. enjoy your savingS

- by sorting and decluttering your clothes, you will revamp your wardrobe; organizing your closet can be a great and enjoyable alternative to shopping, it will make you save time, energy, space, and money altogether. Spend cash on worthwhile expenses, like a new car, or that travel you have been dreaming about for so long.

12.

extend your clothes - lifecycle, have fun, photograph your outfits, understand the power of accessorizing and styling, be inventive, and creative. Build a core wardrobe, you genuinely love, and treasure. Saying that stop purchasing, items that are not going to add, any value to your life will make you happier it's by all accounts, an understatement.

With these pieces, in the belief that true opulence is in the detail, the greatest of consideration and care is paid to even the smallest of steps in the design and creation process. What is your Favorite part about being a designer ? My favorite part of being a designer is to create jewelry that is synonymous with art. I like to bridge the nuances of art and jewelry through tradition, heritage and culture. As an avid art enthusiast and explorer, I love to work towards making jewelry the status of art by passionately emulating reinterpretations of antiques and pieces of historical value with a modern approach and aesthetic. It’s truly liberating to create pieces that mean deeply to you personally as well as for the wearer. Seeing designs come to life after numerous rounds of changes and working with a resourceful and trustworthy team that understands your perception is amazing.

To what do you attribute your success ? I attribute my success to hard work, an amazing team, strong will, great support from those around and passion. My passion fuels my desire to do what I do.

You've designed exclusive auction pieces for Japanese Collectors, who has been your highest bidder ?

NARCISA PHERES & HER HER HIGHNESS PRINCESS OLGAROMANOFF

I started working at a trading house in Japan. My main role at work was buying antique jewelry, art, vintage wines and one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces on auctions from around the world. While sourcing and buying these pieces, our clients would request to have some of them redesigned, thus I started jewelry design and slowly discovered my passion for this industry. An American football player I designed for 7 years had a very intricate taste and a few collectors around the world for whom I designed private collections for.

What is your Favorite piece of history, behind one of your pieces? The Romanov Collection, gives me a chance as a contemporary designer to go back in history and reinvent the stylish and opulent ornaments. Being appointed as the 'official jewelry supplier to Her Highness Princess Olga Romanoff' was an extremely humbling honor and designing this collection really allowed me to recreate history with PHERES' vision.

They are part of our unforgettable moments and definitely make or break an outfit. There is no racing uniform, fully equipped, without the right pair of shoes. Trends come and go, as the decade went on, we have clearly noticed the industry, rethinking the footwear to fit women’s new life patterns. The lives of women changed dramatically over the past decades, it wasn’t a long time ago that women, were considered her father’s or husband’s “possession”, with little freedom of choice. Unlike 60 years ago, today’s women-run businesses, work, study and travel, they play important roles in the society, contributing to economic growth and development, women are no longer dealing with domestic affairs only, but they live a more active lifestyle so the footwear industry had to acknowledge and adjust to that new reality.

INTERVIEW How would you describe your personal style? I am a very simple woman! I like to mix my diamonds with my yeezy’s and go for the extremes. I get bored so easily so my style changes from one day to another

What skills are important for a career in fashion design?

Do you believe it is more difficult to be an entrepreneur as a woman?

The most important skill in any career is your passion! But in fashion i think one of the most important skill is your creativity! The power to speak your mind with every collection, to pass on a message that will touch every woman's heart

Not at all! I find it very beautiful and fulfilling to be an entrepreneur and a woman. We have come a long way and women are no longer seen as being the weak gender or that they do not belong in business area. Sometimes, I think it is even an advantage to be a female entrepreneur.

How do you stay up to date in fashion?

What is your vision about your next collection?

To be in the fashion industry is not about following trends, is about creating them. Of course i know everything that happens in the fashion industry, but i don't let it affect my work, as i believe that my message should be more about the woman i want to dress, rather the woman who follows trends.

As a true lioness that I am :D my vision about the next collection will be under the trademark "opulence I has it" On a more serious note, I will put into design everything that luxury stands for, or to be more precisely everything a lioness in love with luxury stands for.

What role do you think social media plays in fashion today?

Money or love? What is the best choice?

Social media is probably the most important communication channel of our days and it gives me the opportunity to stay in contact with those who love my designs. It's amazing the feedback you get in just seconds after making a post. Nevertheless, i still prefer the traditional way of advertising. I will forever be in a Vogue kind of girl.

Love! I will always choose love, but I am aim for both. Love is more poetic when you have the means to live it properly.

What was the highest price a client paid for your creations? 8000 euros for a custom made bridal gown.

You are so beautiful, what are your secrets? Food, sport, others?

What trends do you currently see in the fashion industry?

I am very happy to see that everyone is developing more their personal style, even though following the trends and the fashionable accessories of nowadays. We are becoming more self-aware of who we are and what we want to express. It is a beautiful thing to sit on a terrace and feel part of a catwalk.

Thank you, you are very kind! but I am just very lucky and I inherit my mother. Thank God I do not have to put too much effort into it. What I am very rigorous about is my skin care routine: I never miss a spa appointment or a facial.

Vlada Haggerty THE LI P ART QUEEN

V

lada Haggerty has been making waves since 2015 as the “lip art” queen of social media, and it all started with a makeup experiment at home. Vlada’s Lip drip artwork has caught the eyes of brands such as Smashbox, Nyx, and Pat McGrath Labs, amongst many others. But just like any other young artist, Vlada was on her path to self-discovery. Before her move to Los Angeles, Vlada never pictured herself in a career solely focused on makeup. She had a few jobs, her last one was working as an assistant for a Partner at this big law firm in Kyiv, Ukraine, and that’s when she had enough. In her own words, “ I desperately needed a creative outlet because the routine and the lack of creativity at work was driving me crazy! I went to a makeup school, and I felt like I finally found my planet.” When Vlada moved to LA, she had no job, friends, and her husband was always on the road. In these trying circumstances, she found therapy in making lip-art after seeing the work of Karla Powell (@karlapowellmua). Without any help from models and photographers, she used her lips as a blank canvas. Since then, it has opened many doors for her, and she still can’t believe that it would become a big passion of hers. Here at British Thoughts, we were lucky to catch up with the Lip-Art star of Instagram. As we get her musings on her first-ever makeup experience, an upcoming project LipArt. shop, and the future of the makeup industry post-pandemic.

Q U E S T I O N S B Y : C Y A N L E I G H D A C A S I N, LIFEST YLE EDITOR @ BRITISH THOUGHTS UK

1. Growing up, do you recall your first ever experience with makeup? And when did that moment, when you knew that you wanted to be a makeup artist happen? Yes, I remember my very first encounter with makeup very well. I was three or four years old and I found my mom's makeup bag. I took everything out of it and found this cream blush pot. I smeared it all over my face and scared my mom. I remember feeling pure joy when I played with makeup. 2. A lot of people talk about having a “holy grail” product when it comes to makeup, what’s yours? For me, it's clear lip gloss. It's such a versatile product. I can use it on the lips, on the eyelids, as a glossy highlighter, and of course to create those frozen in time drip photos. 3. When it comes to your style, how would you describe it? And could you tell us, who are the icons that inspired your technique? Skincare meets fashion! I love very healthy, glassy skin (I don't like using foundation) paired with over the top extravagant eyes or lips. I love this contrast. My biggest inspirations are Salvador Dali, Pat McGrath, and Alex Box. 4. Speaking about your craft, you’ve become a sensation on social media with Lip Art and now you’re launching “Lipart.Shop” this summer, could you share with us how you started in creating these sublime pieces of artwork on a pair of lips? And what is the concept behind creating Lipart.shop? I started experimenting with lip art after seeing the beautiful works of a UK makeup artist Karla Powell (@karlapowellmua on Instagram). At the time I was new to Los Angeles and didn't know any models or photographers, so I used my own lips as my canvas and started taking photos with my husband's camera. I never imagined it would grow into such a strong passion of mine! I've been doing lip art for over five years now and my collection couldn't be contained by Instagram anymore!

Lipart.shop is like a museum gift shop without the museum :) I put my favorite and most intricate designs on apparel, home decor, accessories, and even baby clothes. There's lip art for everyone! In time I am also planning on bringing fun collaborations with my favorite lip artists who work in other mediums. 5. With everything going on right now, as a professional in the creative industry, how do you see the beauty trade progressing in the future? I think we will see a lot more remote work in the creative industry. Hopefully, the makeup artists will pay more attention to keeping their kits sanitized and clean. It is very important to take this time right now to learn (or refresh on) the proper hygiene and sanitation 101 for makeup artists. As the industry starts to open up in many countries we are all still in danger. As makeup artists, we hold a great responsibility to prevent the spread of the Covid-19. This literally can save someone's life. 6. Because we’re all online now, how can you make your brand stand out when everyone else is on the same global platform? I don't know if there's a formula for that, but I think that you should know your competitors, make your product different while staying true to your own vision. People care about the brand's values so it's important not to stay silent on things that matter. 7. Lastly, if you were to give up and coming industry peeps words of advice. What would it be? In Vadim Zeland's book, I read a story about a little boy who went mushroom picking with his family and kept getting frustrated because they were finding big mushrooms one after another and he didn't seem to be able to find any. In frustration, he walked away from the rest of them and saw several big mushrooms, and then more and more. I think this story is a great example of how you can't truly succeed if you're following everyone else. So, as scary as it may be at first, find your own path and stay on it!

Snake Venom Skin HOW A REPTILE POTION IS KEY TO UNLOCK YOUNGER LOOKING SKIN

“Life is a moving thing. We have to be willing to constantly evolve. Perfection is a constant transformation.”- Nia Peeples. As a snake sheds its skin through sloughing, it represents rebirth, transformation and healing. Just like a snake, us humans also shed our skin and our skin craves transformation and healing. However, unlike Botox products, snake venom-like products still allow facial expressions and movements. It’s thought to be a fast, effective and painless alternative to Botox, and your natural smile and expressions can still shine through - why not give it a go?

ARTICLE BY: HAYLEY-BELLE CAMPBELL

Venom is a snakes natural defence; it contains neurotoxins that paralyse victims by impacting their neuromuscular function. Botox also influences the neuromuscular system preventing the muscles contractingwhich prevents wrinkles. This is why they are similar! The synthetic form of Skin Venom also known as “SYN® – AKE” was made in Switzerland, by a company called Pentapharm, which mimics Temple Snake Venom and is being used in high end, bespoke antiaging beauty products on the market today. “Turning nature into life saving solutions” being one of

SNAKE SERUM O2 Inspired by Temple Viper venom, enjoy an instant boost to the skin with this SYN® – AKE dipeptide drenched serum. This wrinkle freezing ultra-lightweight gel is filled with firming, moisturising and revitalising complexes to smooth the skin. The SYN® – AKE dipeptide helps freeze muscles to reduce the signs of ageing giving you a younger and, firmer complexion. This serum includes Filflow BTX oxygen carrier to carry oxygen into the skin and encourage cell respiration. www.harods.com/www.rodial.co.uk £75

their mottos, “SYN® – AKE has been developed as efficient smoothing and anti- wrinkle care, particularly effective against expression lines by relaxing facial muscles”.Pentapharm.com. Available right now, not only do we have transforming SYN® – AKE infused luxury serum drops and moisturisers but we also can find snake jelly eye patches, eye creams, bubble sheets and even neck masks too! Who would have thought a skin care oozing with snake venom could be so magical?!

RODIAL SNAKE JELLY EYE PATCHES These jelly eye patches look like Sunday morning heaven! Infused with charcoal powder, basil leaf extract, glycerin and SYN®– AKE , these under eye masks are the perfect pamper treatment whilst visibly smoothing away crows feet and under eye expression lines. They contain 1% SYN®–AKE tripeptide which freezes the under eyes muscle contractions to plump and rejuvenate the under eye, jelly texture to reduce puffiness and glycerine to smooth those final fine line out. www.harods.com/www.rodial.co.uk £32

MBR LIQUID SURGERY SERUM

RODIAL SNAKE EYE CREAM O2

This German engineered product is on the higher end of the cost scales, one bottle of Liquid Surge Serum costs £1543.95 for 50ml. To be used morning and night, this serum is used to boost collagen, smooth skin and contains synthetic perfluorocarbons that carry oxygen to the skin. With SYN®–AKE as a main ingredient but not actually advertised this way, this serum paired with MBR’s intense treatment of cross lift ultra peptide serum is thought to be the equivalent of a face lift! As the serum absorbs in to the skin, excess carbon dioxide is replaced by oxygen producing a youthful glowing complexion.

This unique eye cream is infused with a double shot of SYN®–AKE dipeptide- which instantly works to freeze muscle contractions and create a line erasing effect. The Rodial snake eye cream is designed to instantly firm and tighten the under eye, helping ease laughter and expression lines around the eye area. Likewise, to Rodial’s snake serum and jelly eye patches, a key benefit to Rodial snake products is the oxygen carrierwhich boosts circulation and wakes up the eyes. This rich and creamy eye cream sinks quickly into the skin, brightens, hydrates and has that magic snake venom like ingredient to take away a few years to your eye age!

I HAVE INTERPRETED MY FAVOURITE CATWALK TRENDS TO RECREATE THESE LOOKS FOR YOUR PERUSAL. WORDS BY: SOPHIE GELL

If Glitter is your Makeup of choice, then this is the look for you! Gigi Hadid, modelling the chunky glitter, from the inner corner of the eye, across the bridge of the nose, at Virgil Abloh’s Off-White show. Perfect for weekend nights, if you’re feeling a little extra.

The Execution of my Adaptation: Take Urban Decay’s Moondust Eyeshadow in “space cowboy”, pat across the eyelid, using your finger tips, to create a nude iridescent base. Then take Urban Decays Heavy Metal Glitter Gel in the shade “party monster” and apply from the inner corner of the eye across the bridge of the nose. Ready to sparkle your night away.

Glitter galore! This look leaves you lighting up the dance floor, 1970's Disco mixed with 1990's rave culture. The amazing Makeup Artist, Dominic Skinner, is the Genius behind this look for the House of Holland 2020 Spring Show. Embodying sleeping beauty festival vibes.

The Trend: Be classical with this timeless trend, perfect for any occasion. Combining a fresh face, focusing on beautiful bold lips, making your lips centre stage. Seen at Victorian Elegance during Emilia Wickstead Spring 2020 show.

The Execution of my Adaptation: For eyes use Urban Decay’s Moondust Eyeshadow in “space cowboy” for a natural base. To create the show stopping lips, I used Urban Decays 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil in shade 69, starting from the outer edge of the lips, then filling the whole lip. Then go in with Urban Decay’s Comfort Matte Vice Lipstick in “bad blood” and apply in the centre of the lip, leaving you looking like you have just stepped onto the red carpet.

This angelic, free floating eyeliner is created by the legendary Pat McGrath, for Anna Sui's Spring 2020 Show. She is the queen of breaking rules and having fun with makeup. No more liner having to be along your lash line! Now, liner floating high, is the new rage.

The Execution of my Adaptation:

When applying eyeshadow, I always prep an eye with eyeshadow primer. It brings out pigment and increases staying power. Using the shade “Funki” in BPERFECT, Stacey Marie, Carnival XL Pro Palette, pack on the colour, blend outwards and under the eye. As for those graphic floating wings, use NYX white liquid liner to create the shape across your lid. Complete the look, by placing a star from Gypsy Shrines, “Individual Star jewels” pack under each eye, perfect for the Party feels.

The Trend:

The Trend: Dark with a Touch of Dazzle. This, enticing, look definitely has the Wow Factor. Seen at the Halpern Spring 2020 Show, the models sporting sparkly, rounded Cats Eyes, inspired by the disco era.

The Execution of my Adaptation: Begin with base, use P.Louise Badda Black base. It has a creamy consistency, making it easy to apply your rounded cat eye shape. Start from the outline then fill. Then apply BPERFECT, Stacey Marie, Carnival XL Pro Palette the shade “lights out” and pack over the top of your shape. Clean away excesses, then dot Urban Decay, Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner in “midnight cowboy” all over the eyeshadow to finish the look. Disco fever with tones of sex appeal.

The brighter the better, neon colours of the 80's are making a comeback. This beautiful Neon pink hombre look is embodying the Neon colour trend from the Versace Spring 2020 runway look.

The Execution of my Adaptation: I used BPERFECT, Stacey Marie, Carnival XL Pro Palette. First prime the eye with Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion. Pack on the shade “Funki” using Mac 239S Shader Brush, from the front corner of your eye. Build until the colour is intense. From half way to the edge of the eye, repeat with the shade “Wasted”, then blend out the edges with ZOEVA 221 Luxe Soft Crease Brush. I also used the same colours smudging under lower lash line. Live a colourful life.

Q & A

1. What is the concept behind your practice? I believe I have really helped changed the way people think about cosmetic enhancements. The stigma of “Ladies Who Lunch,” “Risky Procedures,” and “Excessive Vanity” have been around for too long. That is not what my practice or the future of rejuvenation is about. It is not about being young or beautiful per se, or changing who we are – it’s about doing things that maximize what was god given to us. It’s about maintaining youthful attributes as we also try to do with our muscles, hair and nails, and our nutrition. What I do for many patients is a form of grooming. Small frequent efforts make a big difference, and it is about maintenance – like nutrition and exercise. The art is finding the combination of treatments and performing them in a way that is approachable, manageable and effortless looking. Without modern medicine most of our bodies wouldn’t have survived this long anyway. So why shouldn’t we use the tools and the art of modern medicine to maintain the wellness, health and beauty of our skin and ourselves. Cutting edge technology, non-invasive treatments and licensed medical professionals are what we focus on at PFRANKMD. 2. What are some of the hardest things you generally face within this industry, if any? Patient expectation can be the most difficult thing. My greatest challenge is to assess a patient’s expectations, while some are low and some are high. I try to reeducate them from what they may have heard about procedures or what they may expect, and then try to match my skills and treatment choices to meet educated expectations. When I am successful at this, it is my greatest achievement and makes for a great doctor patient experience. 3. After all these years of experience, if you were asked to make a projection of the direction in which the industry is heading, what would it be? The future will be different. Patients are going to opt for procedures that give greater bang for buck results and will be willing to endure more downtime because they have the time to give due to reduced social and work schedules. The cosmetic market overall will continue to boom as people, particularly older people, will want to be competitive in the job market and look their best. Bespoke skincare has also been an increasing trend, even before the pandemic, and will continue to be at the forefront. People in general during this time are also simplifying – they want fewer material items. Multiple products and routines are not desirable right now. Consumers want one product that can do many things. Bespoke skincare is made specifically for you and packs more power than multiple products. 4. What are the most common techniques you use? Injectables have been and continue to be the most popular in regard to

safety and efficacy. My technique, which I developed, called the ENSO technique - "Expressive Neuromodulation and Structural Optimization" involves using various types of products – little bits in many places throughout the face and neck to achieve a global improvement that goes relatively unnoticed to others. I treat faces, not features. 5. You're the beauty guru of NYC! What makes you different compared to other dermatologists from the industry? Make sure you’re going to a provider that offers a large variety of treatments with a combination of devices. The current and future of non-invasive cosmetic dermatology is in combining a lot of small things to get big results, so you can’t just go to someone that only offers one device. You also have to remember lasers and other devices are just instruments that rely on the performer. You rely on trained practitioners to pick the best device for the patient. 6. What is the most valuable thing you have learned about dermatology? That what I do is a marathon, not a race. Like any form of grooming , being meticulous about what you do , how u do it, and how often makes all the difference. 7. Is there an achievement or contribution that you are most proud of? Professionally my achievement is having curated a wonderful group of patients over 20 years that I am growing old gracefully with. Although I still see new patients daily, I am most grateful to those patients that have trusted me and stuck with me throughout my professional journey 8. You are about to launch the book called "The Pro-Aging Playbook: Embracing a Lifestyle of Beauty and Wellness Inside and Out." Can you please tell us, in one sentence, what is the core message of the book? I wrote this book to help people of all ages navigate the latest technologies and lifestyle choices in the beauty and wellness industry, so they can positively transform the way they look and feel. By reading, you'll see how small, gradual changes in how you think, how you eat, how you move, and how you make time to care for yourself can cost little to nothing – yet enable you to reap enormous rewards. 9. Let's say I'm 18 and I'd love to become the next Dr. Frank. What steps should I follow? Stay open minded. You may not want to be me in 5 years! I love what I do but I didn’t think at 18 that the journey would go this way. Being open minded, dedicated and staying passionate about what you’re doing keeps you in the right direction regardless of where it takes you. I do believe the practice of medicine is still an amazing profession. Always a student, always a teacher. 10. How would you define success in your field? I never really feel successful because there is always more I want to achieve – I am my biggest critic. But I am very grateful for what has come my way thus far – confidence in my skills, patients that trust them, continued passion for new skills and a loving family that supports me along the way.

THE ONGOING OF THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY BY: VIOREL A COMAN

C

lean beauty is a shift in perspective and a new standard in the beauty industry. Things like environmental conservation, a growing demographic concerned about the safety of beauty products and brand ethical standards are the driving force behind clean beauty. The increasing interest in clean beauty market is driven by savvy millennials and Gen Z consumers who have countless brands to choose from. They use platforms like ewg.org, skincarisma.com, officinea.fr and thinkdirtyapp.com to find out about the safety of the skincare and make-up ingredients they pay for. But how is clean beauty defined? The widely accepted definition is about products meeting non-toxic standards for ingredients and

40 b r i t i s h T H O U G H T S . u k

processing. Controversial ingredients like parabens, sulfates, mineral oils, synthetic fragrances, chemical sunscreens or phthalates are strictly prohibited. Clean beauty can be considered an umbrella term for natural, organic, non-toxic, crueltyfree, vegan. Their common feature is that they are an alternative to traditional legacy brands who remain quite stiff in their approach to sustainability, sourcing of their ingredients and overall are not transparent in their relationship with their consumers. The stakes for clean beauty are high, considering “the global market value for natural cosmetics expected a positive increase from almost 34.5 billion dollars in 2018 to roughly 54.5 billion dollars expected for the year 2027. These data

are proof of the growing importance of the natural and organic cosmetics market. (source: statista, 2020)“ Surprisingly, choosing clean beauty does not necessarily mean that ingredients are entirely natural and organic or that they are free from potentially harming ingredients. Beauty experts warn against irritable essential oils or botanical extracts found in skin care that have a higher allergenic potential. This all can be confusing for the consumer but what you need to keep in mind is that with the conventional beauty products, most synthetic ingredients have been tested and are indeed safer while natural ingredients could do more harm than good and irritate the skin.

One of the the most popular retailers in the US to step in and only sell clean beauty brands is Credo Beauty with a great online platform and 9 brick-and-mortar locations. They demand that all 120 labels sold on their platform pass the transparency test on the safety, sourcing, sustainability and ethics regarding their ingredients. They even coined “The Credo Clean Beauty Standard”, the strongest standard in retail - it is a benchmark that many brands use when creating new products. It all comes down to raising the bar on safety, sustainability and transparency offering support and guidance to their labels along the way. Sephora is also running the “Clean at Sephora” program since 2018, where products formulated with accepted ingredients are marked with a circular green seal. The growing trend of healthier lifestyle and more ethically driven buying choices is leading to the expansion of clean beauty and this way, vegan and cruelty-free brands have more than doubled in the past five years. Have a look at some of the most prominent brands to take a clear stand and send a powerful message regarding clean beauty principles. The Body Shop is for fighting against testing on animals, Lush is only using sustainable packaging and ethically sourced ingredients (they stopped using natural mica in the products for unethical reasons). Glow Recipe is also committed to sustainability being 100% recyclable, Bybi has a low carbon footprint with full transparency around product’s entire lifecycle. Beauty Counter

has set up a ’Never List, including over 1,800 ingredients that are never used in their formulations. The clean beauty movement has also contributed to a shift towards more ethical and sustainable practices in the industry. Responsible sourcing of palm oil, found in 70% of personal care products is a priority for a significant number of cosmetic companies in the attempt to save the rainforests and prevent massive greenhouse emissions. There is an official logo on the sustainable palm oil products, the same concept as the leaping bunny logo on the cruelty-free products, the Von vegan products or Terracycle logo for the Beauty Products Recycling Program. On the same note, Estee Lauder, Shiseido, Coty, LVMH have signed the Responsible Mica Initiative, taking a step toward a responsible mica supply chain in India as well as stopping unsafe working conditions and child exploitation by 2022. How can we all help? There is indeed social responsibility when you take on conscious shopping and when you support brands who are transparent about their processes and the sourcing of their ingredients. Bottom line is we all have a say in reshaping the beauty market. Seeing the constant growth of clean beauty is proof that things can change for the better and that our purchasing power can support the shift towards a cleaner and more sustainable cosmetics industry. I am looking forward to living in a world where clean beauty is simply called beauty. With all that in mind, tell me, what brand is you next moisturiser going to be from? PHOTO CREDITS: ALEX COMAN

This non-regulated grey area connected to clean beauty always causes debate: there are different regulations set in place on the US and Europe market. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t have a definition of clean and natural, so brands use this freedom to their liking. The American cosmetic manufacturers are not legally required to test their products for safety. On the other hand, the EU regulations are more strict and because of that, more than 1,300 chemicals have banned from being used in cosmetics while the US only banned 11.

Did you know about this precious information regarding your health? While is no secret that proper hydration is key to our wellbeing, it’s important to note that not all water is created equal. This vital source may seem readily available in all forms, and through many different channels. However, the science behind what makes water such an essential life sustaining source is not always evident. As we better understand this element beyond its ability to quench our thirst, what truly differentiates one blend of water from the next is the mineral content that determines its ability to heal and detoxify our bodies. Esencially, alkalinity matters. How we nourish ourselves is crucial to maintaining a balanced and optimal state of well being. When our bodies take on an acidic state, we are exposed to various aliments which produce the onset of disease. By contrast, alkalinity aids in the prevention of disease, and is established when our bodies present a

pH of 8 and above. Thus, the alkalinity of the water we drink is key to supporting our health. As part of its mission, having been awarded for its unique mineral composition along with its superior quality and taste, it is the right mineral content and the natural colloids of Gold and Silver that determines its ability to heal and detoxify our bodies. Aur’a stands to become a leading vital source of water across international markets. Aur’a is collected from pristine origins located in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania and bottled in glass to retain its most natural and beneficial properties. With both still land sparkling offerings, Aur’a is best known for its ability to rejuvenate, nourish and heal. Aur’a presents a unique option for those who value quality and sustainability when it comes to wellness. Aur’a is dedicated to spreading awareness about water quality in relation to health and wellness.

ia's dream centered on her becoming Miss Universe, she was determined to fulfill what she wanted. To achieve her goal, she quit her acting career to focus on entering the Binibining Pilipinas pageant, the national competition responsible for selecting candidates for international beauty pageants.

No other country in the world focuses on beauty pageants more than the Philippines. For Filipinos, beauty contests like Miss Universe are like football matches or marathons, and Pia's will-power to win the crown matched any athlete's.

She joined Binibining Pilipinas three times, finally winning the coveted title of Miss Universe Philippines. Fast forward to her journey as a candidate for the crown; Pia displayed her graceful, smart, and witty nature despite the controversy surrounding her win. Following the end of her term in 2016, Pia remains to be one of the most well-known faces internationally, not because of that 2015 mishap but for the fact that she is confidently beautiful with a heart.

Q&A

e at British Thoughts caught up with the enigmatic beauty in New York City, getting her thoughts on what it’s like to be a woman in modern times and a Ms. Universe for Life. Why did you want to join beauty pageants, notably Miss Universe? Miss Universe is greatly celebrated in the Philippines. It's been like that since I was a little girl. I guess one could say that it was a childhood dream. I would watch it every year, as a little kid. I remember thinking to myself I wanna be like her one day. Cheesy, but it's true. Those queens from the 80's and 90's were my heroes.

Growing up, what was it like for you to start working at a young age? I found it challenging! During the weekdays, I'd attend classes and then during the weekends, I'd be at photoshoots. Sure, being the breadwinner of the family was tough, but it taught me discipline and the value of a good work ethic. It also taught me not to take things for granted.

Being raised in a conservative country like the Philippines, what do you think about the expectations of women settling down at a certain age? I don't believe that there is a right age to settle down, it really depends on the individual. I think the times are changing and women are prioritizing their careers. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Settling down should happen when you are ready, not when society tells you.

What, if any, are the challenges you’ve faced as a person known to the spotlight? The lack of privacy was something I wasn't prepared for. I focused so much on just trying to get the crown and didn't really think of the consequences that came with it. I've learned to adjust now. I realized that I am in control of what I share with the public.

Where do you see yourself and your career headed in the next five years? In the next 5 years, I'd like to focus on business. I'd like to try my hand at entrepreneurship. I'm so eager to learn new things. Right now, I have a milk tea business called "BesTea" in Alabang. A lipstick collaboration with Teviant and I'm working on another new exciting line... Watch out for it!

Q & A

ypothetically, if you didn’t win the Ms. Universe Crown. With your culinary school degree, would you venture out into the food scene? And if so, what would be your specialty? Actually no. My back up plan was not to be a chef but to be a flight attendant instead. I told myself that if I didn't win Miss Universe, I'd find a job that would allow me to see the world. So, being a flight attendant was my back up plan. In cooking though, desserts are my specialty.

If there was a chance for you to have the four people who inspire you the most over for a dinner party, who would they be and how did they shape you as a person? Madonna - She's the queen of self-expression. I'd like to learn that more.

Meryl Streep - One of the best actresses of our time. I'd like to ask her how she prepares for her roles.

Michelle Obama - Former First Lady but not just standing in the shadow of her husband. She is a force in her own right, and I love that!

My mom - She's the strongest person I know and I'm sure she'd love to meet these amazing women too!

In light of these uncertain times, your humanitarian work amid the COVID pandemic has been awe-inspiring in your country. Personally, how do you keep yourself inspired and motivated when you’re not in work mode? Have there been any new activities that you’ve been trying out?

I look for inspiration everywhere. From people, places, situations. It didn't feel right to not do anything. So, I wanted to make sure I made use of my platform. It is after all the reason why I was chosen to be a Miss Universe. It's a responsibility for life!

What’s the best advice you can give to the next generation of aspiring pageant candidates?

"DON'T UNDERESTIMATE WHERE THE HEART CAN TAKE YOU."

Those will be some of the best times of your life. So have fun! Make friends, take lots of pictures and be yourself. You want to come out of that pageant a winner. With or without the crown.

And lastly, how can you be confidently beautiful with your heart? Follow it. Don't underestimate where the heart can take you!

the designer PAULINE WONG

Having graduated with flying colours from the London College of Fashion and with many years in the business creating clothes for "the beautiful people" (from Bacall to Streisand, household names to celebrities) I am now back by popular demand. Some clients have become loyal supporters as well as friends. Hence the website "Lifestyle with friends" is created. Still in the confines of fashion but now moving into the world of accessories, I always believe fashion jewellery is not what you need but what you want. It takes you to the next level of edgy dressing. It is the "Je ne sais quoi" that completes the look. Primarily for my designs, I only use precious and semi-precious stones. an exquisite palette of colours and textures. Necklaces can be worn on their own or teamed with unique pendants painstakingly sourced from all over the world. Or a bespoke piece with diamonds, rubies and sapphires specially to commemorate a birthday, wedding or anniversary.

Each necklace is solely dependent on how the wearer wears it. It can change from "black tie" dressing to less formal everyday use, just by switching the stones to suit the occasion and the outfit. This is my "thinking woman" creation. I call it my signature chameleon necklace. As we enter this eco-conscious 21st century, we would strive to reduce the carbon footprint by buying better quality but less quantity. Less is definitely more. As Confucius once said, "a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step". I look forward to this exciting journey of discovery, always keeping close my old loyal friends while making new ones. For without them this "lifestyle with friends" on-line business would not happen.

1. What first led you in the direction of making jewellery? I went into it by accident after closing my fashion couture line. 2. What is your favourite part about being a designer? Having this gift to create and end product which is aesthetically beautiful. It is a great feeling of achievement. 3. How do you want women to feel when wearing your jewellery? It depends what woman and what category of my necklaces they have selected to wear. My statement necklaces which I am quite famous for, empowers the wearer. I was told that it is like wearing a Chanel suit or a pair of Jimmy choo’s shoes. It makes the person feel great. 4. Should BEADWORK and JEWELRY MAKING be considered ART or CRAFT? The way I see it, there is a very fine line between art and craft. Great art work depends on great craftsmanship. They are interdependent on each other. One cannot exist without the other. 5. What inspired your creativity when making a new piece of jewellery? Like any artist, shapes to me are very important. As I am working on three dimensions, shape is paramount. Then comes balance and harmony. They must all work in synergy. 6. Beyond applying basic techniques, how does the jewellery Designer evoke an emotional response to their jewellery? Knowing what the design piece is used for definitely helps. If for example it is for a grand black tie gala event, then that design must satisfy that criteria. If the client feels all eyes will be on her when she enters the room, then without doubt she will buy it. If it for a birthday, then knowing the life style of the client is useful. 7. What are your favourite materials to use? Firstly it is jade, and the way I design it. I give it a very modern twist bringing this iconic jade into the 21st century. I love pearls too and of course the precious stones of diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires. 8. Your jewellery designs include Jade - can you explain what this is and the meaning behind the Jade in your designs? My prototype necklace was designed with a green jade in the shape of a lotus leaf. Although I was offered a temping price to sell it, I refused. I want to keep it as a reminder of my first step in my jewellery journey. Sentiment overrode the business side! Centuries ago in China, jade can only be worn by the Emperor and his household. It is considered more precious than gold In April 2014 a jade necklace was sold for £27 million by Sotheby in Hong Kong. Being Chinese, I feel a strong attachment to this incredible stone. It is my heritage and I passionately want to introduce it to the 21st century by giving it a modern twist. On a spiritual level, it is believed to keep the wearer from harm. 9. What are the challenges do you face in your work? My journey is paved with challenges. In the grand scheme of things, challenges come in bucket loads with suppliers, workforce and even contemporaries. The emotional abuse is hardest to take. Friends become enemies and enemies become friends. This is a funny old world.

Unique Holiday Experiences You Should Lo ok at now

How to define Wanderlust? -it is a desire, impulse, and an urge to explore the world, and everyone has it. You're probably looking at your next flight out, ear-marking potential travel destinations because this trip is a must, and if there's one thing this year's events have made people realize it's the importance of not wasting time. Everyone has their preferences when it comes to traveling - some would prefer to venture out to the famous cities of Paris, London, Greece, Dubai, and Los Angeles for their trips. But for others who want to venture into the road less unknown - they opt for destinations that aren't on the map. Alex Garland was one of these travelhungry expeditionists who later on wrote an international bestseller about his trips SWIM IN THE OASIS OF SIWA, MATRUH, EGYPT Nestled amongst the storied desert landscape of Egypt and a far cry from the pyramids of Giza and Luxor is Siwa Matruh - an oasis that lies approximately 350 miles (560km) west-southwest of Cairo. A series of small, salty pools dot the landscape amongst the thousands of date palms and olive trees. While the journey inland going to Siwa is a bit of a long one - there are faster alternatives that can be taken from Cairo, and it can be done with the help of your hotel. (img. top) Chartered flights are common place, and getting to Siwa wouldn't be a drag. The best time to fly there is from October to May if you're looking for the bustle of tourist season. If not, the off-season is from June August. No matter when you go, you'll be in awe of its 64 b r i t i s h T H O U G H T S . u k

UNIQUE SALADS THAT WILL UP YOUR FOODIE GAME

BY CYAN LEIGH DAC ASIN

It looks like eating healthy is here to stay - in the long run, With a significant majority of people shifting towards healthier diets that contain less junk and more colorful veggies. People are now "woke" from the shift of mindless eating. "Healthy" is now a requirement, and finally, the stigma around vegetables is shifting. Smoothie Bowls, Vegetarian/ vegan versions of meat-based dishes are a trend; the overall words on people's lips are - exercise, feeling good, balance, and gut-friendly. But somehow, a majority are still hesitant about salads. The age-old myth about them is - "they're not filling enough" and "it is an appetizer, not a meal. "

But these creations aren't all about greens. Although they are a significant component of it, there are amazing vinaigrettes, starches, and twists that you can add to it. Because with food, just like everything else, there is always room for creativity, and you can add as much as you want. The sky is the limit. On a personal level, eating healthy has its benefits for me. Although I don't necessarily follow a diet because I'm not trying to lose weight at the moment, the valuable lesson of listening to your body and knowing what to eat has reinforced my belief in the saying you are what you eat.

And because of how social media has connected everyone, it's easier to find recipes that are free and as high quality as any bistro cafe. Because eating healthy doesn't have to be outrageously expensive and phoophooey since the ingredients are easy to acquire and you wouldn't have to spend hundreds of pounds on a meal prep plan and a specialty chef. But thanks to Youtube and other social media platforms- our favorite home cooks/ chefs have made these amazingly full-filling salad recipes for the budding culinarian in you and, of course, to boost your healthy food game up.

panzanella tuscan bread and tomato salad james tuscan panzanella recipe

ingredients - 4 servings 500 g slightly stale sourdough /country-style bread 50 ml of water 1/2 tbsp red wine vinegar 1 red onion 1 red pepper 1/2 clove garlic 2 anchovies 500 g mixed tomatoes 2 sprigs basil For the dressing 100 ml extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp red wine vinegar 1/2 bunch basil

You can search for Gennaro Contaldo’s Recipe via https://www.sbs.com.au

66 b r i t i s h T H O U G H T S . u k

steps 1. Slice the crusts off the bread and blitz them into crumbs. Dice the rest of the bread into 2x2cm cubes. Throw everything into a large mixing bowl. Combine the water and the vinegar and pour it over the bread. Toss it all together. 2. Peel and finely dice the red onion. Transfer it to a sieve and boil a kettle full of water. Pour the boiling water over the onion over a sink. 2. Tip the onions in with the bread and leave to cool. Use a blowtorch or a gas hob (being careful and never leaving it unattended) to char the skin of the pepper. If using the hob, place the pepper directly over the flame and move using heatproof tongs. Once the skin has black patches all over leave to cool, then slice off the flesh around the seeds. Discard the seeds and small dice the flesh. Add it to the bread. 3. Peel and mince the garlic, mince the anchovies and add both to the bread. Roughly chop the tomatoes and transfer them to the bowl. Scrape any excess liquid into another small bowl. Roughly chop the basil and add it to the bread. Toss everything together with the bread. 4. Give the salad a stir and leave at room temperature for 30 minutes before serving. Serve with plenty of fresh basil and seasoning to taste.

Italians are well known for having the best food creations on the planet. Hello? Pizza, Pasta, and Mozzarella? YUM. This bread and tomato salad has its roots in Italy. A midsummer Tuscan meal that is easy to make and filling to the belly. And all you need is leftover bread, EVOO (essential), red wine vinegar, garlic, tomatoes, and basil. Now there are plenty of recipes you can follow, but I personally like SortedFood’s James Currie’s version and Gennaro Contaldo’s.

israeli salad tory avey recipe www.toriavey.com

PHOTO: w w w. t o r i a v e y. c o m

ingredients This Salad recipe is something we’re all familiar with; It just goes by different names. It’s refreshing and a great standalone meal by itself if you’re looking for something that’s filling, quick to make, and it is versatile. Primarily comprised of cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, olive oil, and fresh parsley, you can mix this up with anything from avocados, mint, pickles, or any other additionals. Just ask Tori Avey, the food anthropologist from https://toriavey.com has created several varieties, and other recipes ranging from inspired Israeli fare are on her website.

1 lb Persian cucumbers, diced lb fresh ripe tomatoes, seeded and diced 1/3 cup minced onion (optional) 1/2 cup minced fresh parsley 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 3 tbsp fresh lemon juice Salt to taste (I use about 1/2 tsp)

steps 1. Slice the Persian cucumber in half lengthwise. Hold the long, thin pieces together with one hand, and slice the bunch into very small pieces with the other hand. Note: Persian cucumbers have lots of little seeds, which add to their flavor. If you have trouble digesting seeds, you can seed the cucumber easily by slicing it in half lengthwise and scooping out the seed-filled center 2. Place the diced cucumbers into a large mixing bowl along with all the other ingredients. 3. Mix until vegetables are well coated with parsley, oil, lemon juice, and salt. 4. Best served fresh at room temperature. You can also serve chilled for a more refreshing salad.

1. In a large sauté pan, warm one tablespoon of the extra-virgin olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook over medium-low heat until just fragrant, about five minutes. Her recipes are all a form of self - care and she believes that brainboosting grains and omega-three rich foods are essential in keeping you focused and active.

sundried tomato pasta salad yumna jawad recipe aka the Feel Good Foodie

ingredients Rotini Pasta: or other short pasta. Sun-dried tomatoes: Use the oil that they come in so that you don’t need to make a separate dressing. Chickpeas: Use canned chickpeas for a really quick and convenient recipe. Fish: You can use either canned salmon or tuna, both work really well. Green Olives: Use pitted olives and cut them in half to blend easier into the salad. Feta cheese: Feta adds a touch of saltiness to this pasta salad. Balsamic vinegar: For a little tang to balance the oil from the sun-dried tomatoes, add some acid to the pasta salad. You could also use red or white wine vinegar if that’s what you have.

steps 1. Cook the pasta al dente. For any pasta salad recipes, I always recommend cooking the pasta al dente. That’s because the texture is really important to the overall appeal of the dish. Cooking the pasta al dente keeps it from becoming mushy when you toss it with the dressing.

This proteinpacked pasta salad combines the best of Mediterranean flavors. Chickpeas, sundried tomatoes, any fish or meat you prefer. This recipe packs a punch as a whole with the tanginess of the balsamic vinegar and the salty notes of feta cheese. It’s the perfect post-workout meal for those gains.

2. Dress the pasta salad while it’s hot. This way, the cooked pasta absorbs the dressing and clings to it better without any of the oil or vinegar being leftover at the bottom of the dish. Adding the dressing, not rinsing with cold water, is what will cool down the pasta. 3. Use a short dried pasta like fusilli, farfalle, rotini or penne. Dried pasta works so much better than fresh, and use something with shape to it to help collect all of those yummy ingredients. 4. Cook the pasta according to the instructions on the package. Throw all of the ingredients together in a large bowl and toss.

asian chicken salad jumna yawad recipe aka the Feel Good Foodie

ingredients

Yumna Jawad’s blog “Feel Good Foodie.” has been a staple on my Instagram feed because I love the quick and easy nature of her weekday meals. It’s perfect if you’re feeling lazy and just looking to make a big batch that can be a huge meal prep weekday plan. Her recipes range from healthy pasta salads and utilize your pantry samples, so there’s no such thing as food waste.

1/2 head Napa cabbage thinly sliced 1 cup red cabbage thinly sliced 1/2 red pepper thinly sliced 1/2 green pepper thinly sliced 1 large carrot thinly sliced 2 6 oz boneless skinless chicken breast 3 green onions diagonally cut 2 tsp olive oil 1 tsp Chinese five-spice powder Dressing 3 Tbsp rice vinegar 3 Tbsp smooth peanut butter 2 Tbsp soy sauce 1 Tbsp sesame seed oil 1 garlic clove 1 thumb ginger

steps 1. In a large bowl, combine the Napa cabbage, red cabbage, red peppers, green peppers, and carrots. 2. In a small blender or food processor, blend together the ingredients for the dressing: rice vinegar, peanut butter, soy sauce, sesame seed oil, garlic and ginger. 3. Pour the dressing over the bowl of cabbage and vegetables, and toss to combine. Divide the salad into two large bowls. 4. Marinate the chicken with the olive oil and Asian five-spice powder and cook thoroughly on both sides. Remove from the pan, slice diagonally, and divide between the two bowls. Garnish with the green onions and enjoy!

watermelon feta & black olive salad patricia tinslay recipe

ingredients

steps

1 small red onion 4 limes 1½ kilograms watermelon (sweet and ripe)

1. Peel and halve the red onion and cut into very fine half-moons and put in a small bowl to steep with the lime juice, to bring out the transparent pinkness in the onions and diminish their rasp. Two limes' worth should do it, but you can find the fruits disappointingly dried up and barren when you cut them in half, in which case add more. 2. Remove the rind and pips from the watermelon, and cut into approximately 4cm / 1½ inch triangular chunks, if that makes sense (maths is not my strong point). Cut the feta into similar sized pieces and put them both into a large, wide shallow bowl. Tear off sprigs of parsley so that it is used like a salad leaf, rather than a garnish, and add to the bowl along with the chopped mint. 3. Tip the now glowingly puce onions, along with their pink juices over the salad in the bowl, add the oil and olives, then using your hands toss the salad very gently so that the feta and melon don't lose their shape. Add a good grinding of black pepper and taste to see whether the dressing needs more lime. Hava Negila! The taste of Tel Aviv sunshine!

Nigella Lawson has said it herself, this combination is improbable, but it is delicious. It’s a summer delight, both refreshing and savory. The best part is you only need a big chunk of watermelon, feta cheese, mint, and lime. Sounds easy enough right?

sangchu - geotjeori korean lettuce salad sangchu geotjeori recipe

https://www.maangchi.com/recipe/sangchu-geotjeori ingredients - 4 servings 1 bunch (about ½ pound: 8-9 ounces ) green or red leaf lettuce 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 green onion, chopped ¼ cup worth onion, sliced thinly 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 teaspoon fish sauce (or salt) 1 teaspoon sugar 1 tablespoon white vinegar 2 tablespoons hot pepper flakes 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil

steps 1. Wash and drain the lettuce. Shake the lettuce to remove excess water. 2. Tear the lettuce into bite-size pieces and set aside. 3. Combine garlic, green onion, onion, soy sauce, fish sauce, sugar, vinegar, hot pepper flakes, and toasted sesame oil in a large mixing bowl and mix it well until the sugar is well dissolved 4. Add the lettuce to the seasoning mixture and mix it gently by hand. 5. Sprinkle with the sesame seeds and serve it right away.

This salad staple is usually served alongside a Samgyupsal (Korean Barbeque feast), but because of its unctuous flavor profile, it can be perfect on its own. It’s composed of leftover lettuce, sesame oil, and hot pepper flakes. Think of it as kimchi before it turns into it. If you’re into this kind of flavor profile, this salad is a must.

HOW CAN YOU MAINTAIN STRUCTURE AND BOUNDARIES IN YOUR RELATIONSHIP BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE?

But then Bam! suddenly they’re at home, governments have decreed that everyone must stay in at all times. Now Karen and Jim are trying to work their way through their new life, having a different routine instead of the old one. Little things are now becoming a big deal. For example, Karen is getting irritated with Jim for not putting things back to where they were. Then Jim suddenly finds his wife’s voice nagging and loud. How is this happening to people who are happily married? Forced Solitude for months gets on everyone’s nerves and since this pandemic happened everyone’s been singing the same tune – either there’s a baby boom or a massive divorce rate coming up.

WORDS BY:CYAN LEIGH DAC ASIN

While this might come true, the question here now is – how can you maintain structure and boundaries in your relationship before it’s too late? The answer to this is seeking help. Even though clinics are closed, it doesn’t mean couples wouldn’t be able to get the help they need during this time, albeit sessions will be done virtually. the main goal of therapy has always been to bridge and resolve disputes between two people in a relationship. There may be a moment that anything will trigger any event that could lead to a potentially high octave argument that could damage any stride in a relationship. Experts such as Orna Guralnik have said that the best way to resolve conflicts and preserve relationships is to acknowledge that there will be therapy isn’t available. Consulting with a marriage therapist is a service to any conflict, no matter what.

L I F E S T Y L E

Even though this is true, we all must understand the importance of setting the stage for good communication and harmony. It is imperative to know where the other person is coming from is also a major factor when it comes to weathering any disputes with your partner. It’s also fundamental that you have time for yourself, just because you’re in enclosed spaces – it doesn’t mean that you have to be in the same space as your partner at all times. Learning how to set boundaries is paramount and offering a lending ear to help one another is one of the key factors

in moving forward during these difficult times (Source – How to maintain relationships during coronavirus quarantine). Although tensions are running high because of the mental stress during the pandemic, couples still need to set aside time for themselves. Dr. Ryan Burkhart and Dr. Trent Langhofer, professors in CCU’s Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program have stressed the importance of being each other’s support system, it doesn’t hurt to be creative about date nights and having new activities together. HOW CANNABIS IS RESHAPING THE WORLD NOW THE LEGAL MARIJUANA BUSINESS HAS PROVED TO BE AS RESILIENT AS IT WAS PRE-PANDEMIC

Truthfully, it’s always been a booming enterprise. Primarily, because it has many health benefits — many have been proven by researchers. That does support the argument, “weed isn’t a drug, it’s an herb.” WORDS BY: CYAN LEIGH DAC ASIN

he Netherlands has been the prime example of legal marijuana consumption for many years. Their drug policy is directed by the idea that every human being may decide about the matters of their health. (source –Amsterdam Drugs Policy) On the other side of the pond, The United States slowly followed with decriminalizing cannabis. At least 11 states have issued decrees for recreational purposes while 33 have designated its uses for medicinal purposes. Since cannabis became legally consumed in America, there’s no denying that the industry has accumulated a massive amount of revenue. A whopping $52 billion, to be exact. Analysts have estimated that the industry will have an enormous economic impact on the market in the future with a total amount of $77 billion by 2022. Now with Covid-19 effectively shutting down the whole of 2020, all industries are suffering from major economic pitfalls. But unsurprisingly, cannabis thrives. Since the pandemic set foot in the US and states have called for their

people to stay at home. The legal cannabis industry has innovatively turned this crisis into an opportunity-driven situation that will ensure its long-term success in the future. With the lockdown in place, all states have unanimously declared that cannabis businesses are essential for health purposes and this has led to establishments offering curb-side pick-ups and deliveries for the safety of their consumers. Statistics have shown that there has been a definitive growth of mental illnesses such as anxiety, insomnia, and others. Cannabis has been proven to treat several health ailments that make it a must-have during this highly stressful time.

Niall, 31 said "It’s been a blessing to have it around. Since the pandemic started, I’ve been having some at night, it’s helping my insomnia and anxiety. It’s also been a good aid in forming a routine for myself." With vaccine trials ongoing, everyone is looking for a potential cure that would finally stop the virus. Along with these potential drugs, Cannabis has also become part of the race in beating Covid-19. Scientists are now testing the possibility that marijuana could be the cure for the virus. (source – Canadian study finds that enzymes in cannabis could treat COVID-19). Nevertheless, even if we are still far from normalization, there is still a glimmer of hope. The industry has secured a big achievement, the destigmatization of using cannabis. In that sense, it’s reshaping the world. Now, it’s a necessity that holds up highly with Uber-Eats, Oreos, And Organic Produce.

I N T E R V I E W Hi Emma! Could you tell us a bit about yourself and your career and experience in the beauty industry? I have worked within beauty and makeup industry for over 16 years in London. I worked in beauty salons, department stores for premium makeup brands such as Bobbi Brown, working with multitude of brides on their wedding day, took part in London Fashion Week and also worked in TV.

Make-up artist &business owner

EMMA McRAE

takes a fresh take on brush care with her EMel launch

After my initial training as a makeup artist, I found the working hours very challenging as a single mother. So I went back to retrain as an aromatherapist where I learnt about the benefits and uses of essential oils. As my son grew older I started to focus on working in the television industry as a makeup artist, which has provided amazing opportunities and experiences.

You are the founder of EMel Brush and Sponge Cleansing Soap launched in 2019, could you share with our readers the inspiration behind your product? I was inspired to make EMel as I have a passion for natural beauty products. I hated using baby shampoo, or washing up liquid to clean my brushes. I only use the best makeup and skincare products for my clients and I wanted to create a makeup brush cleaning product which reflected that. It’s high quality, antibacterial, gentle on the brushes and has a fresh scent. I take a very holistic approach to beauty, and saw there was a gap in the market for a natural, vegan, sustainable product. I wanted to use packaging which could easily be recycled, yet light and durable for makeup artists to carry around with them. Ingredients may chang and tea tree essential oils create a fresh and uplifting scent which lasts on the makeup brushes and has deep cleaning properties. The smell on the brushes gives makeup users feeling of confidence that their brushes are clean.

What are your THOUGHTS on positioning your brand on the market and how was it received by the consumer? I initially created EMel with hard working makeup artists in mind. It is a makeup kit

necessity and I wanted to create a sleek, light weight, hard-working product. During my time teaching makeup master classes I was always asked the question "how do you clean your brushes?" Dirty brushes can cause havoc on the skin and I noticed there weren't many obvious options when it came to brush care. After recieving feedback, I soon realised it was something that all makeup users needed. EMel is rapidly becoming a makeup artists standard, it is sold across online and in store at Depixym and Guru Makeup Emporium as well as our own EMel website. It's amazing to be partnered with such strong brands that provide exceptional support to makeup consumers, enthusiasts and makeup artists alike.

What is the best business advice you ever received?

The best business advice I ever received is from my father, who told me we don't learn from our success but our mistakes. Another great piece of advice was to focus on what I do well and hire people who specialize in other areas I need help with in my business. There is no shame in not being able to do everything.

Can you think of a valuable lesson you learned as an entrepreneur along the way?

I have made so many mistakes and learnt some hard lessons from simple things such as ordering the wrong size labels (which was costly) to working with the wrong people, which was extremely draining. The most valuable lesson I have learnt is to prioritize my own wellbeing. We are a small team and all tasks are done in house. Sometimes it can be overwhelming, but I take time to meditate and exercise daily and I have found that this gives me the grounding I need to make it happen.

Tell us about your plans for the future, anything exciting ahead? Oh, of course! I have ideas to further develop the EMel range. I would like to introduce products to make it easier to keep tools sanitised and organised, especially as a makeup artist, being additionally cautious due to Covid-19 and working to new industry standards. Stay tuned because I am working on an exciting new launch this autumn.

Up coming Events You Should Know Ab out Due to unforeseen circumstances that happened at the beginning of the year, a lot of events were moved/canceled until further notice. But because the world is starting to open up, of course as the saying goes. “The show must go on.” and while this may be the case, some organizers have come up with creative ways to present their work without the traditional format. (Look at the Fashion Weeks of London and Shanghai) while others have opted to wait until things have started to open up again. But fear not, there are still several events to watch out for - F1 is back but with no - in-person attendance until an announcement from the event organizers. On the other hand, several blockbuster movies will have their release dates in the next coming weeks, which is something to look forward to once cinemas are opening up again. Copenhagen Fashion week will push through, and at least two Biennales will be occurring in September. Here is a list of upcoming events to jot down in your calendars.

The Actor's Community is a place where you can grow and continue to build a strong foundation for your work. Created by the actor Mark Rowley, and shared with his friends from the industry, Actors Community became quickly a place where you can learn and develop skills like voice and accents, acting, musical theatre, body-combat, personal coaching and live masterclasses.

A CO C

Overall, the community have a lot to share with every person who wants to become an actor or they are already actors and they want to get specialize more with the help of the professional actors. Like he said, every actor always learning!

That been said, we asked Mark Rowley three essential questions about the Actor’s community in order to understand why AC is different from an acting school.

what is the vision of

Actor's Community?

It has always been a dream to build an international community of actors. The idea of The Actors Community is to support actors around the world and inspire them to go beyond their capabilities - to transcend and make the most of their potential. It’s common for actors in the UK to think that training ends at a drama school: which is insane. Every actor who is working today will tell you that, in our game and in LIFE, you are always learning. The day you stop learning is probably the day you should hang up your coat and call it a day. In America, things are different. Many Actors, whether they are established or just starting out, attended weekly classes to work on their craft and challenge themselves. That’s something I have always admired. So I thought it might be a good idea to bring that kind of training in the UK.

I know so many actors who are looking for a place to work on their craft and also actors who want to help inspire others… so I created the community. One important thing that makes the Actor’s Community different from our American friends is that it’s created by actors for actors. All our coaches and mentors are working actors, directors and industry professionals many of which are award-winning! That experience is so important. I learned so much by being on set and working with other creatives who specialise in their fields. By watching great actors I was able to see what to do and most importantly what NOT to do with my work. Acting training is a mysterious thing and I have always felt that the best teachers are the ones who can share their experience in the industry. If a plumber came round to fix my boiler and the only experience they have is from a book, then I would make him/her a cup of tea and send them on their way. If it were me, I would always want to be trained by someone with industry experience and that’s what I wanted to offer people.

80 b r i t i s h T H O U G H T S . u k

How did AC start? To start I asked some like-minded and talented friends to share their knowledge; actors, directors and producers and luckily they agreed. I think it’s such a beautiful thing: to help inspire others. It was so nice to know that there are so many creatives out there who want to do just that. So far we have gathered a dream team of actors to help each other navigate the acting board game of snakes and ladders. We don’t charge a fortune and we don’t promise you the world! It was so important for us that the training is affordable, particularly at this difficult time. Many actors have multiple jobs and save for acting classes. I have been there and have seen so many burns themselves out trying to afford decent tuition. We even have free masterclasses with famous actors, producers, writers, musical theatre stars … Collectively we have managed to raise nearly 3k for the NHS during the COVID 19 epidemic. A great collective team effort from our guests and participants that I’m really proud of.

If I want now to join AC, but I am not so sure, what will you say to me? So if you are looking for a place to stretch your acting muscles, whether you are just starting out or have been acting professionally then do come along. We have beginner, intermediate and professional classes available. We have accent specialist training with Eliza Butterworth (Netflix Lead in The Last Kingdom) Naomi McDonald (22 years of voice work experience!!!), musical theatre classes with MD Zach Flis (We Will Rock Your Tour) Adam Gillian(Hadestown at the National Theatre, The Tony and Olivier Award-winning UK and Ireland Tour of Beautiful), acting classes for TV and Film with Jamie Donoughue (Oscar Nominated Director) Mark Rowley (Guns Akimbo, The Spanish Princess, The Last Kingdom, Luther, Macbeth, The National Theatre…) James Northcote (‘The Imitation Game’, The Last Kingdom (Netflix) Catherine the Great (HBO)) Leigh Quinn (5+ years at the Royal Shakespeare Company working with some of the biggest theatre directors in the world) Andrew Rothney (National Theatre regular performer, and Television credits include Mary Queen of Scots, Blackbird, Shetland, Catherine the Great, Outlander, The Victim and a secret STARZ project that will be out later this year).

a Portrait of

Ben Caudil on Art, Creativity & Life WORDS BY: CYAN LEIGH DAC ASIN

We at British Thoughts were fortunate to catch up with this amazing artist and to get his thoughts on his style, inspiration, and the ability to keep your creativity flowing no matter what. Ben Caudill's love for the arts has dominated his entire life. Fashion, music, and art made him appreciate the beauty of other people's work. His belief that everything is connected, especially in the arts, stemmed from his time in the Southwest, Durango, Colorado, specifically. His first opportunity came when designer Nadya Gudumak of Nikita Rinadi gave him his first chance to prove himself as an up and comer. Art school in Seattle was his standing point into the creatives field; His concepts combine cultural relativity in all aspects. He takes his inspiration from the ballerinas of Kyiv, London's polished metropolis scene, and models from Moldova, and he isn't stopping anytime soon. After being featured in Zensations Magazine LA, his streak for artistic flair hasn't slowed down. His firm belief in pursuing his dreams and pushing for future collaborations with a diverse range of creative individuals.

1. Do you remember your first experience as a child with the arts? When did you know that the art field was something you wanted to do in the future? My influence as a kid was my dad. He was a welder and a jack of all trades; my mom was also artistic with the loom she had. My dad gave me the talent to restore my first car by hand. It was a 1964 Volvo P1800S, in which I paid and learned a great skill. Archaeology was my first love, but in Durango High School with the likes of drawing and sculpture classes, I began to learn my love of the arts. 2. What are your favorite mediums? And which art period does your style draw the most inspiration from? My favorite mediums are pencil, ink, watercolor, marker, charcoal for illustration and Sheffield crystals and acrylic for painting. The style I would say is a combination of line drawing, realism, and letting the lines speak for themselves in slight movements and imperfections that aren't meant to catch the viewer's eye. I love poses that are different from others and love black and white. Lighting aspects can make a pose stick out, especially when I choose a picture, concept, or a scene. My inspiration ranges from Robert De Niro Sr., Kim Gordon, Syd Mead, Maxfield Parrish, H.R. Giger, and the list goes on. I still occasionally D.J., but I use my vinyl collection on my turntables to influence my work also. Music is a massive influence on me, as well. But my main inspiration is to bring back traditional methods of art and

design into a commercial world. I love to inspire others and connect with all types of artists appreciating each other's work, and diversity is the key to success! 3. As an artist, there's always been a lot of flack about people working in the creatives field. What are your thoughts on this, and how do you handle the criticisms from naysayers? I think every artist should recognize the value of criticism. You are not going to win them all. But it would help if you learned about yourself in the process. The essential point through it all is never to give up, even if you are going through a tough time in your personal life, The Arts are terrific therapy to get through, and it helps you make goals even if you even get knocked down a couple of times! Keep working hard. If you love what you do, then let it shine! 4. During these uncertain times, do you find your creativity lapsing during this pandemic? I think this crisis has put a damper on a lot of artists, not to mention my daily job, I've been working in a hospice for over a decade. I told myself to kick out a few pieces as hard as it is watching the news here in the states. It was almost a couple weeks before that Zainea "Alex" was hanging out in NYC on a beautiful day before this crisis happened. But I keep telling everyone to keep their chin up, do your best. As artists distract the world from the doom and gloom. Be positive; do our job of putting light and culture back into any imagery or thoughts. 5. Do you have any tips for up & coming artists looking for work as we ease into the new normal? The

best tip I can give artists, especially if they are beginners, is never to think small and too big. Nothing can stop your desire, passion, or inspiration. Write down maybe three contacts who inspire you, and show them your work, if they like it fine if not next. Yes, there are times where it will be difficult. But stand tall and keep working at it. If it's your job, personal life hanging you up, you can always escape into your dreams, but always remember that they never come true without sacrifice, hard work, and, most of all, love in what you do. 6. Lastly, Do you have any new projects that we should be keeping an eye out for soon? I have to say this glossy magazine is one of my favorites. Zainea Alexandru does excellent work, and it should be seen and loved by the world, with such a talented editor as Cyan. The team is top-notch in quality and such a polished job. I am proud of such work, and hopefully, I'll have more projects in the U.K. and anywhere else, I am open to it. At the moment, I am sketching a few models drawing for warm-up pieces, painting here and there, and a few fashion designs. But I hope to send a portfolio to Calvin Klein on Madison street, see what they think of my black and white pieces of models. It has been a long dream of mine. I am open to anything and love to collaborate with the world anytime. Much love and respect to you all!
